Ithrust my handdeeperinto my handbag,myfingerscaressedthemetal tubethatheld acigar,apresentCarloshad givenmeonourfirstmeeting.Ihad joked whatuse would acigarbe to agirllikeme andgotno reply.Hisstoryunfoldedwith aclaimhe’d met Fidel Castroearlierinthe yearwhilstvisiting Cuba: atale Irefused to believe, thoughitmademelaugh.Next, he wouldbe tellingmeCheGuevarahad droppedin fortea too.

Fromtheoutset Ithink Iknewit was wrongacceptinghishelp.However at the timeitappeared to be theloanthatour companywasdesperatetosecure.

One yeardowntheline I’vegot my old friend ‘MrHindsight’thundering away inside my head: ‘You reallyshouldn’t have donethatKristina’.

My firstimpression wasthatCarlos was oneofthegoodguys. Tall,slim,cheery smileanddressedin expensivesuits.A businessmaninthedizzyworldoffinance. Hisadvicewas to sleeponanydealbefore signingup.Buthe wasstillsomeonewho trickedme.

Hesetuptheloanthatatfirstappeared to offerlowinterestrates.However,I obviouslydidn’t studythesmallprint wellenough. Thestinginthetail was thatatthe firstanniversary, whenthe introductory interestchargecame to an end,the rate wasnow about to escalateto an extortionate figureforthe remaining twoyears.Icanhonestlysayhenever mentionedanythingabout aone year initialoffer.

Carlosdrewbreathashe confirmed this wasaperfectlylegalagreement, Ijust

hadn’t readthe contract.Itwouldappear therewerenumerous companiesoutthere offeringsimilarskyhighcharges.

It wasthenthatCarlosofferedmean unconventionalalternative, away out. He’d play me at cards over athree week period.We’dmeetupeveryWednesday andhe’d give me achancetoscrapthe higher repaymentfiguresif Iwon. The worstscenario,ifIlost,then my employer wouldbeissuedwithanadministration chargeofonethousandpoundsas well ashaving to paybackthenewhigh interest rates. Thisdidn’t worrymeasIwas confidentIwouldwin. Iwas greatatcards, Irarelylost.

I’dalways thoughtofmyselfas atough oldbird. Ihad kickedthehusbandinto touchsometimeago.Ishouldhavewon thosegamesbutbelieveCarlosmust have been acardshark.Buthey,hadn’t Icheatedinthepast,leftafewpeople unhappy?Livingontheedgehasalways thrilledme.The rent on myLondonpad hasn’t beenpaid forthelastsixmonths and Iowe my ex-boyfriendbigtime. However, Ihaveamassed afairamount ofsavings; my nesteggissecureinatax haven.

EveryWednesdayI lied to the company thatIhad to besomewhereelse,dreaming up anew excuseeachtime.Myextended lunchhour wasspentinadingy room above apub,aptlynamedthe Prince and Thief,whereCarlosand Ibattled overa deckofcards.

Thedeal wasthe bestofthreecard gamesbut Ionlygot to week twoandI wasdone.Carloshad won.

Andnow itseemsthesmall company Iworkforisin forabigshockand Idon’t careoneiota. Thefinancedeal Isetup with Carlos wasabadoneand,withthe extrabillplusthecrazyrates,mybossis notgoing to be pleasedwithme.

Ilosteverygame-myluckystreak plummetedlike astonefallingfromon high. Itook my punishmentsittingdown. Thisman wasbetterthanace; IthoughtI wasgood;he wasonanotherlevel.

Afterthe game Iwashandedaninvoice forthe administration feeasifheknewall along Iwasgoing to lose.I shookhisice coolhandpromising to makepaymentof thenewbillwithin fourteendays.Iwent back to theofficemoreamusedthan annoyed. Theendofthe worldhadn’t arrivedjust yet.

Thirty thousand feetupintheair,I settlebackinto my seatandpressthe callbutton formorechampagne.Irecline intheleatherseat–it’sfirstclassallthe way, moneynoproblem. Reachingdown to my handbag,Ipat thebulgingbrown envelopethatcontainsthe contentsofthe company’ssafe. Alargeamountofcash thatthe bossaskedme to lock away,only I’dremoveditjustbeforeleavingtheoffice forthe lasttime.

Deeperdownamidstthechaosof my bag Igraspthe wafer-thin cylinderthat heldthecigar Carloshad givenmeand wonderwhatCubawillhold forme.

Arathergorgeouslookingairsteward takes my order foratopupofthebubbly stuffandheasksmeifeverythingis alright.

Edmund Wimperis(1835-1900), LocalArtist

Writingthison Tuesday2ndJune2020, I’mpuzzling overthefurthereasingofour Coronaviruslockdownandasking myself whether I’mconfidentenough to start venturingoutsideagainwith my camera.

Iguessnosuch concerns wouldhave enteredthemindof my latestsubject, Edmund MorisonWimperis(1835-1900), whenhesetoutwithhiseaselandbrushes to capturelocalscenes.

My trusty ‘Who’s Buried WhereinEngland’ (D.Greenwood,1982)mentionsonlyone personburiedinChristchurch,so Ithought ithightime Ihad alook at him. It’s Edmund Wimperis,wholiesburiedinthe town’s Jumpers Road Cemetery. Hecamefroman interestingartisticfamilythathad aclose friendshipwithCharles Kingsley,the‘Water Babies’author,plus wasrelatedthrough marriage to thoseotherfamousauthors, theBrontës.

Awatercolourist,Wimperis,wasnot alocal boy, havingbeenborninChester,the sonof alead works’cashier,buthe would spend achunkofhislifeinthelocalarea, dyingin SouthbourneonChristmasDay 1900. Southbourne wasthenstill apart ofChristchurch,notbecoming apartof Bournemouthuntilthe following year.

Wimperistrainedas awood-engraverand draughtsmanon wood and completeda

lotof work forthe Illustrated LondonNews fromaround1863,whenhe wasinhislate20s.Inthesame year,Wimperismarried Anne Edmonds,whichiswheretheBrontë linkcamein. They’d have fourchildren,all ofwhombecametalentedartists.Itwas about tenyearslaterwhenhebecamea professionallandscapeartist.

Wimperis’art was‘neat, finishedbut somewhatcharacterlessandold-fashioned’, although, to my mindithasthelookof Constableaboutit.Oneofhispictureshelps illustratemy‘Lesser KnownChristchurch’talk, and Ialwaysask:‘Whodoyouthinkthat’s by?’Theanswerisalways‘Constable’. Iparticularlylike Wimperis’‘Christchurch, Hants’picture, whichhasthe Stourinthe foreground repletewithcattle,andthe towerofthe Prioryinthebackground. Christchurch,of course,wasinHampshire at thetime.HispictureofArundel Castle,in Sussex,isanotherfavourite. Over theperiod 1879-80, WimperisvisitedNew Zealandwith his twosisters,‘Fanny’and ‘Jenny’,exhibiting onthe SouthIsland,wherehealsono-doubt visitedtheotherChristchurch(whichisnot namedafterusincidentally,butafterChrist Church, Oxford). Fanny& Jennywerealso artists,aswas athird sister,Susannah’:all three wouldendup residentinNew Zealand.

Edmund Wimperisbecame amemberofthe InstituteofPaintersin Water-coloursand lateronitsvice-president. Ithinkheprobably deservestobebetter knownaroundthe local community.

Anyonewhowalksaround ChristchurchHarbourregularly willappreciatethattheareaisa havenforwildbirds. Tomanyramblers,itmight seemthatlittlechangesonthe avianfrontfromoneseason tothenext,apartfromthe obviousappearanceinspring anddisappearanceinautumnof familiarmigrants,suchasBarn SwallowsandHouseandSand Martins.

Infact,thenumberofbirdspecies andsizeofbirdpopulations fluctuateconsiderablythroughout theyear –oneofthingsthat makesbirdwatching,formeat least,endlesslyfascinating.

Youneverknow whatisgoing toturnupnext.Thereisalways thepossibilityofanuncommon orrarebirdspeciesdropping

outoftheskytoadd afrissonof excitementtoornithologistswho callChristchurchHarbourtheir localbirding‘patch’.

It’s nowoneofthebesttimes oftheyearforgettingoutand watchingbirds, formigratory speciesarearrivingintheUK fromfarand wide.Thereare birdsliterallyeverywhere,from the watersoftheHarbourtothe reedbeds,marshes,meadows, woodland,scrubthickets,cliffs, groynesandotherhabitats nearby.

AccordingtoChristchurch HarbourOrnithologicalGroup’s 2018annualreport(themost recentcurrentlyavailable), atotal of 327 bird specieshavebeen recordedlocallyovertheyears. Thenumberofspeciesthat annuallybreedorattemptto

breedintheHarbourrecording areaisjustunder50.

Onecommonavianresidentis thatsuperbsongster,theSkylark, whichheldatleast nine territories in2018,althoughthesuccessof anybreedingpairsisunknown.

ASkylark’ssongisalwaysuplifting andexperiencedatitsbeston warm,blue-skyspring daysin areaslikeHengistburyHead.

BritishBarnSwallows,which spendthewinterinSouth Africa, arecommonpassagemigrants andregularbreedersinthe Harbourarea.Thefirstbird recordedlocallyin2018wason 4Aprilandthelastbirdseenwas on19November.

Anotherfairlycommonspecies, which breedsatHengistbury insmallnumbers,istheoftenoverlookedRockPipit.Readers unfamiliarwithspeciessuchas thiscansourceimagesonGoogle.

Heardmuchmoreoftenthan seenistheCetti’sWarbler,whose explosivesong,onceheard,is neverforgotten.Therewereupto sixsingingmalesatWickin2018. Other warblersaroundthe Harbouratthistimeoftheyear includeSedgeandReed,aswell asBlackcap,Chiffchaff,Willow WarblerandWhitethroat.

Gracingtheskiestooare assortedspecieslikeDunnock, PiedWagtail,GreenandGreat SpottedWoodpeckers,Stonechat, MeadowPipit,RingedPlover, Redshank, Oystercatcherand variousgulls.
