DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

A warm welcome to 2021 and our January edition of Dorset Business Focus. A Happy New Year! I hope you and your families had a peaceful and happy festive season and had the opportunity to recharge and get ready for the year ahead. 2020 will be a year that none of us will forget, where we faced unimaginable challenges and situations. It was also a year where we learned so much so quickly. There is no doubt that Covid has forced us to look at the way we work and has driven real innovation in businesses and challenged time-served ways of working. The adoption of video conferencing by so many has just been incredible and is now already an established way of working. I often ponder why we weren’t really using this before when the technology had been around for so long. It really needed a game-changing situation to drive changes in established behaviours. I know people are really looking forward to face to face meetings and events again but it goes without saying we won’t be working the way we were when this is all over. Virtual meetings also offer tremendous benefits in terms of our time being more productive with much less travel time and offers the opportunity to significantly reduce congestion and our carbon footprint. I think we’ve also seen our teams and colleagues respond to a highly unpredictable situation with resolve and commitment. We’ve

asked our teams to fundamentally change the way they work and continue to do their jobs, often in difficult circumstances. I’ve seen the commitment of teams across Dorset, including our own Dorset Chamber team, and we’ve learned that with trust and leadership, we will get the commitment and support of our colleagues. This is a time to look forward with renewed positivity and energy for the opportunities and challenges ahead. Of course, we are not out of the woods yet with both Covid and our departure from the EU, but it is important we do look forward with energy and optimism and continue to push forward with the innovative approach we all adopted in 2020. What became abundantly clear during last year was how important the word ‘community’ is. We’ve always believed in community and it became clear very quickly that this is at the heart of Dorset Chamber. A network where people of course want to seek new relationships and opportunities – but to also be part of a network that is warm, welcoming and highly supportive. We’ll continue to our absolute best to support our members and business community in the year ahead. We are committed and passionate and looking forward to the year ahead!

CHATTING WITH CAS PATON

the eCommerce CEO putting Dorset on the world stage for tech OnBuy is clearly a fantastic story of success, with so much ambition, and you've seen incredible growth over the last couple of years. How was OnBuy born? Having worked in eCommerce for most of my life, I noticed a gap in the market. There was a need for an online marketplace that operated professionally, had a level playing field for all its sellers, and that, operationally speaking, truly supported its retailers. I knew that if we got the supply side right, then the customer side of the business could flourish, in a positive and ethical eCommerce ecosystem. It was from there that OnBuy was born. I created OnBuy to be a partner to the retailers that sell on our platform, not a competitor. A business model that favours the marketplace over the retailers who sell through it is ultimately flawed, and we’re seeing the fallout of that way of operating now, with some big names being caught on the wrong side of competition laws. What makes OnBuy stand apart from other marketplaces, which are global competitors and have become household names? What is OnBuy’s USP? The biggest thing that sets OnBuy apart is that we do not hold our own stock, which means that we are not in competition with our sellers. In a sense, that make us one of very few true marketplaces out there. Driven by our mission to be a fair and transparent marketplace, we are always looking at how we can ensure our sellers are succeeding on our site. We offer competitive sales fees and subscription options that are not only affordable for retailers, but really do add benefit to the seller and the customer. Many of our sellers make a little extra margin, and give a little bit to the customer by the way of a lower price compared to other online outlets. We have a dedicated UK-based support team for retailers to help with product listing, and each seller gets an individual account manager as their main point of contact. With OnBuy, sellers can receive immediate payment through PayPal. As soon as a seller dispatches an item, the funds are released to their PayPal account. OnBuy never holds sellers’ money, in contrast to those platforms that release funds monthly. We also have a pioneering partnership with PayPal, with a scheme in place which covers sellers in case of any issues with eligible orders. Our Subscription Waiver Guarantee for sellers means that we will waive the next month’s subscription fee for sellers still finding their feet with us. A marketplace should help sellers’ growth, not hinder it! We have a huge focus on promotion and are investing heavily in this for the benefit of our sellers. Our teams actively market selected 4

January 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

products through external marketing channels and price comparison sites to help get products more exposure and sales – that’s all free of charge to help our sellers succeed. We chose to discount our seller fees for Black Friday to show our sellers just how committed we are to driving their success. Unlike other platforms, where sellers are pushed to lower their prices during big seasonal sales, we cut our fees to offer over £50 million in savings across OnBuy – meaning we took the financial hit instead of independent retailers, who need every bit of profit they can get, especially this year. Cas, what drives you in building a business like this? What does it take to do this? Passion. I am driving something that I am extremely passionate about and have total belief in; I can see huge scope for OnBuy’s future. The evolution of the business is what really excites me, and I’m fortunate to have an amazing team around me which is just as passionate about making those ideas happen! Starting your own business, especially in the eCommerce space, requires a huge amount of hard work and determination, but because of the belief I have in our mission, our business model and our team, I’m constantly pushing the bar higher. And of course, it’s easy to be passionate and focused on the business when it’s creating such success for the small and independent retailers that sell on OnBuy. Our ecosystem is really powerful – that was demonstrated massively in 2020, and we have so much more to give. Retail is obviously a sector that has seen huge disruption over the last few years – the significant growth in online retail and the increasing challenges in the high street. How do you see the future of shopping for consumer goods and the role of the high street? Will town centres recover from this? The global switch to online shopping since COVID-19 has been utterly seismic and after the restrictions we’ve faced this year, online shopping has become the first port of call for many who would have previously shopped elsewhere. I don’t doubt that this will remain the most preferred option for shoppers in 2021 and beyond. But this isn’t the demise of the town centre overall. While online retail will continue to dominate the retail space long after the global health crisis is solved, high street players needn’t feel overshadowed. Many brands have already successfully moved to hybrid or omnichannel operations, proving that online sales can be complementary to, rather than at loggerheads with, a bricks-and-mortar presence. We are championing click and collect to drive footfall into bricks and mortar businesses and /company/dorset-chamber/

developing connectivity solutions to allow for retailers to engage with online retailing more easily. Consumers can expect to see new technologies in high street stores and see more fulfilment centres opening storefronts and popups, blurring traditional lines between in-store versus online. This hybrid approach is something I expect to be big this year. Tell us about your future growth plans Cas, we understand you are increasing your operations with another office in Manchester. Why Manchester? We currently operate from our HQ in Poole. With this year’s meteoric growth, and as we prepare to launch our global expansion by opening territory-specific sites in over 140 countries within the next two years, 2021 is all about scale for OnBuy. We’ll be doubling our Dorset-based team within the next two years and will also be looking for new premises in the county to accommodate this growth. Our pledge to Dorset does not stop there. I want to see Dorset put on the map for tech and have greater recognition for its thriving business community. In addition to expanding in Dorset, we will be opening an office in Manchester next year. Manchester has a lot to offer, particularly in terms of access to a wider pool of talent, and we’ll be recruiting for various roles up there in the next few years too. Manchester is where I was born and educated and so being able to bring some of OnBuy’s success back home is great too. You clearly have great ambition for OnBuy – what do you see as the challenges ahead and barriers you will need to overcome? Our biggest challenge right now is recruiting the right talent. With such quick growth, we’ve needed more resources to keep things going. This year alone we’ve gone from 14 employees to over 60, and if we could find the right talent, we’d be at over 100 employees within weeks. Of course, the lockdowns and COVID restrictions have impacted our ability to meet people and recruit how we normally would, but there seems to be a skills shortage, particularly in Dorset. It’s frustrating when we so desperately need more talent. We’re always looking for talented website developers, database administrators, marketing roles, copywriters and support staff.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

2020 in numbers for OnBuy Where will OnBuy be in 10 years and how will you get there? Look at what we’ve achieved in the space of four years. By our 10th birthday, I have no doubt that we’ll be a household name. We’ve set our sights on becoming a unicorn company, which means we would be a privately owned business, valued at over $1 billion. Unicorn status is not just a vanity statement, it’s a testament to the success of OnBuy and the success of the UK tech industry. There simply aren’t many unicorns in the UK, and the US is dominant. To get to that status will put OnBuy on the world stage, and will absolutely put Bournemouth and Poole on the world map too. It will change the perspective of the whole region and OnBuy will make that happen. Getting to $1 billion is not an easy feat, but to put that into perspective, in January this year our business was valued at $9 million, in March we were valued at $18 million, and recently we have been valued at over $240 million. If we continue on this trajectory, well, the sky really is the limit for OnBuy. If we even have a limit! We’re about to internationalise and that will see OnBuy scale from the UK to over 142 countries. Some countries feature significantly larger eCommerce markets than the UK – so getting to our target is now easier than ever. And the credibility that comes with that status will enable us to grow even faster – attracting more sellers, and more products, with better prices – and then it’s easier to get more customers. The self-perpetuating growth will not stop for some time. We plan to offer better prices and stronger logistics solutions to a large number of countries. And that’s in the three year plan. By 10 years… who knows.

I want to see Dorset put on the map for tech and have greater recognition for its thriving business community. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Businesses such as OnBuy generate wealth and employment, which has a positive effect on the local economy. What can we, and I mean the collective we, do to assist you and help you grow your business here in Dorset? I am really keen for OnBuy to help put Dorset on the global map within the eCommerce sector. We are currently looking to expand into a larger Dorset based premises and would like to get wheels in motion for this as soon as possible. Collectively, we need to be able to tell Dorset’s story to attract brilliant people to the South Coast. Now is the perfect time to do it; the pandemic has flipped ways of working on its head, people are no longer tied to a specific location for work, London is losing its appeal and people are ambitious for a better worklife balance. There is no better place to have a successful career, a fantastic lifestyle, and a beautiful landscape to walk after work each day, than Dorset. Of course, I also want customers in Dorset to support local businesses and switch up their online shopping habits! Finally, what are the most valuable lessons you've learned and what would you say to other ambitious entrepreneurs just starting out on their journey? The one thing I would strongly advise all entrepreneurs is; if you are looking to secure investment, get some insight from someone who has been through the funding rounds. This will really help your business journey. You don’t just need to know your industry inside out, but you need to be able to sell this concept to investors whose perception of the market and your proposition could be completely different. The most valuable piece of advice I’ve been given is to get off the hamster wheel; stop spinning and look back at what you are doing. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, but it’s important to take time to step back and reflect.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Introducing the Dorset-based eCommerce business that just keeps growing Founded in Dorset in 2016 by entrepreneur Cas Paton, OnBuy is on a mission to revolutionise the eCommerce sector by providing a fair, transparent and ethical marketplace that benefits buyers and sellers. With a current sales run-rate of over £170 million, the company is on target to hit £2 billion in annual sales over the next three years and is firmly making headway in achieving its mission. OnBuy offers competitive prices on millions of products supplied by thousands of trusted online retailers. From household names to independent sellers, buyers can shop securely for products from a range of categories, such as electricals, beauty, home and garden, toys, and baby supplies. Scoring 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with 87% of reviews scoring OnBuy as excellent, the business has established itself as the UK’s most trusted online marketplace. The Poole-based business – which currently employs over 60 people and is continually recruiting – doesn’t hold any stock of its own, and never will. This means it isn’t in competition with its 6,000-plus sellers -– a figure which is currently growing by 10% each month, and due to rocket in line with the company's 2021 growth plans. Instead, OnBuy’s efforts are focused on marketing, visibility and enabling businesses to stake their claim in the colossal global market of online shopping. In just four years, OnBuy has built up a customer base of over 8 million and a catalogue of over 30 million products – figures which are growing by the day. The success of OnBuy is thanks to founder Cas Paton’s entrepreneurial flair. Born with an inherent ambition to achieve, by the age of 25 Cas had established a successful eCommerce consultancy business. Four years later, he was delivering technical solutions for large organisations such as NATO and the NHS. Cas commented: “I’m a thinker and a doer. I noticed that there was a gap in the market, and that was the inspiration behind OnBuy. The marketplace we’ve developed has the professionalism that customers have come to expect, but the level playing field retailers need to thrive. We operate fairly, putting the seller’s

success at the top of the priority list. Every pound generated in sales through OnBuy is a pound for the seller. We work in partnership with our sellers and as we grow, their businesses should have the opportunity to grow with us.” Sellers on OnBuy benefit from the marketplace’s innovative subscription waiver guarantee, which means that sellers can get up to speed with confidence when first establishing themselves on the platform. This is just one of many unique selling points OnBuy offers its sellers, including Boost scalable marketing investment and customisable Sale Price discounting. Cas said: “Our subscription waiver guarantee helps small businesses transition from other platforms risk-free and gives those new to online selling the chance to build confidence in this way of retailing, and grow in the space. So many sellers operate in fear of what the large platforms, which are meant to be supporting their sales, might do – which impacts their bottom line. OnBuy’s mission is to operate in a complementary way, not in competition, and so we’re always thinking of ways we can support our sellers, many of whom are independent businesses and family enterprises.” OnBuy's competitive sales fees are between 5-9%, depending on the product on sale, plus PayPal's payment fees, which can vary from 1.9% to 3.4% plus 30p per transaction. Seller subscriptions start at £19 per month and provide varying levels of support, including product marketing, PayPal protection, integration access, improved search ranking, and lead listing authority. Commenting on his passion for the business, Cas said: “Driving a change in the future of eCommerce is the most exciting part of my job. I’m passionate about creating success and it’s great to see that the growth of OnBuy is delivering what I’ve always wanted – massive sales and increased profitability for those who sell with us. This is just the start for OnBuy – we’ll be putting Dorset firmly on the global map next year as the UK’s home of eCommerce.” You can hear more from Cas on page 4.

What’s 2021 looking like for OnBuy? After a record-breaking 2020, OnBuy is poised for an even more exciting 2021. Cas commented: “2021 is the year that OnBuy goes global. We’ve beta-tested OnBuy in 42 countries already and we’re ready to roll out territory-specific sites. This huge expansion means we need more talent. We’re recruiting new roles to be based at our head office in Dorset and we’ll be doubling the size of our team here within the next two years. With a bigger team comes the need for a bigger office too, so I’m looking forward to securing our ideal Dorset HQ premises in the coming year. “2021 is all about scale for OnBuy. Having secured £5 million of investment last summer and having just launched our Series B funding round, we’re looking to propel our growth even faster. Our ambition is to double GMV in the six months to June, and with our global rollout I’m confident we’ll achieve this. “Looking ahead to the spring, we’ll start development on our mobile app in March. The app will make online shopping with OnBuy seamless and we’re aiming for this to be available to users across the world by the summer. “OnBuy was breaking records pretty much week on week throughout 2020 and we have no plans to slow down. This coming year, we aim to scale up, demonstrate our strength as a business and continue making immense headway to becoming the world’s most trusted marketplace – one that is always true to its mission to provide a fair, transparent and ethical marketplace that benefits buyers and sellers.” @DorsetChamber

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

ETS is the new name driving MercedesBenz Trucks aftersales service in Dorset More than 25 years after he last worked for a member of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle network, Colin Gale has re-established his association with the manufacturer – this time, though, it’s the name of his own business that’s above the workshop doors. ETS Truck & Van, of Blandford Forum, Dorset, is the latest addition to Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ expanding roll call of Authorised Repairers. Its appointment in November means that locallybased operators of trucks bearing the three-pointed star and three diamonds badge of FUSO, another Daimler brand, will continue to receive the timely and efficient, customer-focused back-up they are entitled to expect. The opportunity to partner with Mercedes-Benz Trucks followed the acquisition by ETS Truck & Van in October 2019 of an established commercial vehicle maintenance facility on a site of more than half an acre in Shaftesbury Lane. The company, which already represents two other truck manufacturers at its head office location in Poole, immediately embarked on a major programme of much-needed refurbishment to the six-bay workshop – two with pits – parts department and offices, before reopening on an independent basis. Colin and his son Darren, ETS Truck & Van’s Operations Director, approached Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK after learning that following the opening of its own flagship branch in Southampton, established franchisee Marshall Truck & Van 8

had resolved to shut its workshop in Poole. That closure last month coincided with the installation of the Mercedes-Benz signage 15 miles away at ETS Truck & Van’s depot in Blandford Forum, ensuring continuity of representation and a seamless transition for locally based operators. “We’ve retained the overwhelming majority of customers who’d been using the Blandford facility and were ticking along quite nicely, despite the Covid-related disruption,” recalled Colin. “But the chance to take a big step up by becoming an Authorised Repairer for Mercedes-Benz Trucks was one we didn’t want to pass up. “It’s certainly put the icing on the cake. The manufacturer’s representatives were positive from the outset and our new operation really stacks up now from a commercial perspective.” The Blandford workshop is currently open from 6am until 8pm on weekdays, and from 7am until noon on Saturdays. It is also the base for a Mercedes-Benz Service 24h van which is manned by dedicated technicians who provide round-the-clock emergency roadside assistance. While Colin retains oversight as Managing Director, responsibility

for the day-to-day running of the operation falls to Darren, who is supported by Service Manager James Lalor Ricketts, and Group Parts Manager Ryan Parker. Other key members of the team include Administrator Rosie Goddard, who worked for the previous owner and is already a familiar figure to many customers, and Parts Advisor Lewis Coles and Delivery Driver Debbie Harvey, both of whom were recruited from Marshall Truck & Van, Poole. “We have some great people who are proud to be representing the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand,” continued Colin. “Our interest has always been in forging long-term relationships, by providing highquality maintenance, repair and parts services at sensible prices. “The aim, as far as possible, is to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for customers. To that end there’s a dedicated ATF (Authorised Testing Facility) lane at our Poole workshop that can also be used to MoT test

Blandford customers’ trucks, and we have introduced additional services at the new branch such as tachograph installation and calibration, and brake testing. We’re also aiming to add LOLER weight testing for tail-lifts and will continue to extend our offer as the business develops.” Having served his apprenticeship during the 1970s, Colin joined the former MercedesBenz franchisee in Poole as a technician in 1986. Over the next eight years he rose through Service Advisor and Service Manager roles to become General Manager. When he left in 1994 it was to launch his own venture with Darren, who was then 18. Trading as Euro Truck Services, and operating initially from a rented workshop, the pair grew their business quickly before signing-up with their first OEM – and adopting the ETS name – in 1997. www.etstrucks.co.uk

Forest Holme Hospice delivers essential bereavement counselling thanks to grant giving charity Talbot Village Trust has donated £10,000 to support Forest Holme Hospice in providing counselling services to those experiencing grief. As a result of the nationwide lockdown, the charity has moved it services online. Since mid-March, the counselling team at the hospice has provided counselling services to over 120 clients, with 60% of these being new referrals. The virtual sessions with a qualified counsellor provide individuals with a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings surrounding the loss of a loved one. Paul Tucker, Fundraising & Communications Manager at Forest Holme Hospice, commented: “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on families who are experiencing loss. Due to rules around social distancing, people are often not able to have a proper funeral or be close to their relatives during end of life stages. “Thanks to funding from the Trust, we have been able to help families navigate through an extremely stressful period. These sessions have proved to be essential during this particularly challenging time, and the need for them is reflected by the rapid increase in demand that we are experiencing.” Funding from Talbot Village Trust was also used to purchase various resources for clients to help them navigate their grief, including recommended pieces of literature. Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “The work Forest Holme Hospice do to support bereaved families is exceptional. On behalf of the Trust I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the doctors, nurses and counsellors who work tirelessly to ensure all those who require help, have access to it during such a fragile time.” Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to individuals with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The Hospice has a team of specialist care professionals who provide both practical and emotional support for adults and their families in a variety of settings. www.forestholmehospice.org.uk Talbot Village Trust is a grant giving charity that provides support to charities based in Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding areas. The year is new. The daylight hours are short. And as for everyone, the ‘WFH’ days are (still) long. I finally walked the dog at 9pm today after a full day of online board meetings, team and client calls, a socially distanced ‘launch’ of a new Poole eatery, and project managing a builder doing maintenance on the house. It was amazing… the walk, that is. Serene. It was pouring with rain and pitch black. But I’ve worked out that if you’re wearing the right kit, it’s like spending an hour inside the Calm app on the rainforest setting. Seriously though, and the most important thing to acknowledge is….we are in 2021!!!! 2020 is SO last season. And good riddance as far as I’m concerned. We shouldn’t forget what we have experienced though, and the learnings from the year just gone. Shouldn’t we continue to reflect? These learnings and experiences will shape our decisions, based on doing the right thing, for many years to come if we are wise - both personally and professionally. What do we REALLY want to achieve ‘in the round’ this year? Focusing on our values, family, self-care, reflecting on our working lives - what offers an inspiration for the future? The one theme I am going to plug here this month is (and I am starting to hear it more and more -YAY!)….is ‘things WILL get better and when they do….you better be ready!’ At our end of year British Chambers board meeting last month, our president, Baroness Ruby McGregor, suggested we think about a set of positives to reflect upon. Planning ahead is potentially going to be dogged with a little negativity as we really don’t know what to expect as the pandemic reality evolves. Breaking our forecasting down into shorter chunks may be a healthier approach if we can get away with it. We reap what we sow, so we must stay optimistic. The highs are coming; are we up for catching the wave? I also had the privilege of meeting legendary chef Marco Pierre White and his son, Luciano, at the media call of his first Luccio’s restaurant opening at Brewery Square, Dorchester. It was wonderful to see opportunity embraced, and for Dorset to be the destination of choice for this cool new brand, evolved from a fantastic legacy. Marco was nothing but optimistic about the future. He talked about the Spanish flu after the First World War and how, at the time, our predecessors struggled for three consecutive winters. Once that moment had passed, the roaring 20’s and 30’s brought heady high times,

opportunity, and indulgence. He stressed, just like Ruby did, “there WILL be good times after this”. My wish for you as we start a new year is to think about how you can be ready for the bright new future ahead. What is going to put you in pole position and make you resilient? Who can you nurture in your organisations to help you? If you think they may not be ready yet, consider them too young perhaps, well give them a chance to shine…they will surpass your expectations I bet you. The new order throws out the old rules. Be bold, be brave. To enable our members and the business community in our amazing county to evolve we are pleased to share with you our ‘Fit for the Future’ initiative. Building resilience amongst our businesses is going to be key to the success of Dorset’s economic future. We want to provide a platform for members to champion their supportive and emotionally intelligent workplaces and acknowledge the stresses and strains of those leading our organisations; giving them the opportunity to ask for help when needed without judgement. If those at the helm are in good shape, then the workforces around them will inevitably be in the most productive form too. A lot of time has been spent in the engine room of this critical piece of work over the past few months with our member experts, Ouch Training, Dorset Mind, and Livewell Dorset. We call it ‘THRIVE’ - a platform of ‘Champions’ from across the business community who are being trained to lend a sympathetic ear to those who may want to share their fears, frustrations, and struggles in a confidential and empathetic environment. Our Champions all share a desire to help, born out of their own experiences and observations. I am so proud to have seen so many come forward with their offer of support to help others in our business community. And really excited to see the difference they will make. Dorset Chamber is the rightful place to host this ‘Fit for the Future’ hub; we know how strong the camaraderie and team spirit amongst our membership is. The ‘3am Club’ needs to be given chance to have a good night’s sleep! Together we will make it happen and get us ready for the roaring 2020’s! With my very best wishes for a positive January, Liz 11

A career in social care offers long-term employment prospects, with opportunity for promotion and progression as well as job security. Mark Nash, Co-founder of Mploy says: “The care industry has always suffered severe staffing shortages but this year that problem has become even more apparent during Covid-19 pandemic. Also, we are mindful of challenges related to the new Brexit immigration rules and therefore we decided that it was important that we look at opportunities we can take to support the

industry as well as to grow Mploy.” Anne Banks, Mploy’s Healthcare Director adds: “We are extremely excited to start the Academy. Adult social care is one of the few sectors where jobs are increasing, offering significant numbers of long-term career opportunities in the current job market. There’s an estimated 1.49 million people working in social care, and by 2035 we’ll need to fill around 580,000 more jobs. We feel it is a fantastic

opportunity to get involved now in building strong and sustainable workforce for the care industry. In addition to training new staff, we will also offer our existing staff regular learning and development that will ensure they remain up to date with best practice to provide the best care and support our clients.” PROUD TO CARE! www.mploystaff.com

“Our view is that when it comes to expert guidance on the sale of a company, it is knowledge and not ‘bricks and mortar’ that our clients value. Our business model, right from the outset, was to create a virtual team of specialists that would enable us to provide a high-level of expertise, but not necessarily a corresponding highlevel of fees.” When the pandemic forced the lockdown of many corporate finance firms in March and November, TheNonExec Limited

Dorset LEP invests £194k in rural skills support Dorset Local Enterprise is committed to supporting the local rural and natural economy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has invested £194,000 towards improving rural further education. Local Growth Fund investment has been provided to enable two new infrastructure upgrades at Kingston Maurward College, a leading further education provider of land-based studies located near Dorchester, to provide a boost to rural skills development as well as helping to attract and retain talent to support the sector. The first project will provide digital innovations such as the rollout of 5G and superfast broadband to improve the quality of education and increase capacity for students. The second ‘Green Classroom’ project will create a new environmental education facility at Hengistbury Head, providing a space for students to run engaging, original and inspirational activities involving the use of Augmented Reality. Supporting this project is an evolving report on Natural Value, co-authored by Dorset LEP and Dorset Local Nature Partnership (DLNP) to support economic growth which is not at the expense for the natural environment, and underpinning the Dorset Local Industrial Strategy commitment to creating a programme of cultural excellence that enhances natural assets. Already claiming R&D tax credits? This is an annual cashback opportunity that many innovative businesses will be aware of. Even if you have made a claim in the past, there is every chance it can be improved on. This is an additional cash flow benefit that may be especially useful to businesses during the pandemic. You may be eligible for around 200% more than was claimed. How? Rob Sowden of consultancy Business Cash Enabler advises: “Some businesses have received small amounts via a DIY claim or a claim compiled by their accountant, however, there is almost always additional cash benefit available, based on a detailed technical appraisal of the innovation activities. Receiving something back from HMRC is deemed as ‘success’, often without realising they left a pile of cash on the table. Business owners/directors should ask themselves: • Did our company submit its own claim? • Did the person/s assessing the claim fully understand the legislation? • Were they aware of ALL qualifying activities, or did they focus on one or two key projects? • If our accountant compiled a claim, did they carry out a detailed technical assessment,

28

or did they ask us to write the technical report? • In reality, did we do much of the work and then we were charged a fee for the work we did ourselves? • Are we confident that if HMRC raise an enquiry that we and/ or our accountant can defend the claim? Of course, HMRC won’t know to point out if you have under-claimed, but they may determine that ineligible costs were claimed and seek repayment of some or all of the benefit received, potentially up to six years later. It’s a fair and most generous scheme but it does have rules. Much safer to use a specialist claims management provider that assigns a technical analyst to assess all qualifying activities, write up both technical and financial reports and deal with any enquiry handling arising, all as part of a no-win-no-fee model, thereby posing no financial risk or loss to a business.

January 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

I have directed many businesses to a specialist provider that assigns a technical analyst and has a record of uplifting average values by 200% on claims already submitted. A free appraisal of claims already submitted is available. If there is nothing else to claim, there is his nothing else to do, and no fee, but it gives peace of mind. In the event that there is more, the provider will only charge its success fee on the additional benefit identified. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. If you haven’t claimed at all and are eligible, then there could be tens of thousands on the table, still within the 2-year claim window. If a year-end is looming, acting well ahead of that is critical to avoid potential loss of an entire year’s benefit.”

To help businesses evaluate eligibility headlines the following questions may be useful: • Do you design and make new products? • Do you seek to improve processes, services, materials or devices? • Do you make prototypes or perform testing? • Do you develop software or IT solutions? • Have you invested in failed projects or developed products that were never launched? • Do you employ any staff with a technical or scientific background? Leader of Ouch Training appointed to provide global support to leading health and safety body Simon Cassin, CEO of Ouch Training, has strengthened his longstanding relationship with the leading health and safety body, IOSH, by becoming a Topic Advisor for its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. Simon will be supporting IOSH’s (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) members who are looking to develop themselves through the CPD programme. Specifically, he will be an additional source of expertise, helping the IOSH CPD team to recognise and share appropriate sources of training, academic papers, websites, books and podcasts. Commenting on his role, Simon said: “I am extremely humbled to have been offered the opportunity to support the IOSH members. I have always championed the value of greater understanding and application of morality and ethics within the industry, and it is fantastic to be given this chance to continue working with an internationally recognised body.” The topics of applied philosophy and psychology in the workplace are relatively new

to the health, safety and wellbeing industry, but after many years of academic study and practical experience, Simon has sparked a wider interest in the topic from the sector. Throughout 2020, Simon delivered several webinars surrounding applied philosophy and morality and ethics within the health and safety industry. During these oversubscribed sessions, Simon encouraged listeners to consider the bigger picture behind socially accepted norms in the sector, bringing in ideas from philosophical thinkers such as Walzer, Plato, Aristotle, Hume and Kant. To complement this role, Ouch Training is launching a series of philosophy and psychology-based courses. The programme will not only apply to workplace health and safety, but will also consider fundamental aspects of

understanding and application of morality and

employee and customer relationships across various areas of business. The first course being offered by Ouch Training is called ‘An Introduction to Morality and Ethics’. The programme is designed to bring together practical applications of ethical concepts, with common examples of moral dilemmas to show how a business can use an ethical framework to achieve and maintain ethical standards. The course is aimed at businesses managers and leaders who seek to develop greater knowledge and understanding of how ethics and morality can enhance and enable their day to day business objectives. Ouch Training delivers bespoke health, safety and wellbeing training to a wide range of businesses. The company has two branches, one on the south coast and another in Manchester. The company’s flexible nature and online learning platform allows for training sessions to take place with candidates across the globe. Emphasis is placed on facilitating a memorable learning experience which is both enjoyable and worthwhile.

EU citizens across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole reminded to apply for settled status EU citizens who live and work in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being reminded to apply for settled status if they wish to stay on in the area after the UK’s exit from the EU. Dorset is in the top ten UK areas for the number of EU citizens living and working locally. The deadline for the EU Settlement Scheme status is 30 June 2021, but BCP Council is advising eligible EU citizens to apply as soon as possible. After this deadline, EU citizens who have not secured settled status will lose access to the benefits and services they have currently. Earlier in 2020, BCP Council wrote to around 9,000 residents identified from the electoral roll as being EU citizens to encourage them to apply for settled status. Many are working in the health and social care or hospitality sector and the council is actively reaching out to these residents. The council has also ensured that all eligible looked-after children and care leavers within the care system have been supported to secure settled status as part of our wider child protection responsibilities. Any new children in the care system will similarly be supported to secure settled status. Councillor Drew Mellor, Leader of BCP Council, said: “EU citizens living and working in our area make a fantastic contribution to our local economy, culture and diversity and we want them to continue to do so after Brexit. “We urge our EU citizens and their families to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme as soon as possible, to ensure they can stay on to live and work here. The settlement scheme will protect their rights after the EU transition period, including access to healthcare, benefits and pensions.” EU citizens and their families have until 30 June 2021 to apply to get settled or pre-settled status for the right to stay. BCP Council is advising them not to leave their application to the last minute, in case there are any complications with their application. The application can be done online www.gov. uk/eu-settled-status Anyone needing assistance with completing their application can get support from specialist help teams at Citizens Advice Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole www.citizensadvicebcp.org.uk www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk 32

Local firm trailblazing new safety cameras across the UK With many businesses looking to bounce back from the impact of COVID-19 in 2021, local company Safe & Secure Compliance Ltd are receiving nationwide interest in their DoorSentry camera screening product. The company have engaged Dorset Chamber member IMS Group to drive their targeted marketing campaign across the UK. The Poole based company have developed ground-breaking technology that could provide the answer to protecting businesses and organisations as they open their doors to more visitors. The technology, first developed twenty years ago for the UK military, offers secure door monitoring and incorporates ‘fever-cam’ technology, all of which is linked to a sophisticated and powerful backend. The company produce a range of advanced safety equipment such as technology to monitor and protect water systems from the threat of Legionella. But it’s been their DoorSentry product that’s been flying off the shelves during 2020. DoorSentry is a clever gadget that uses facial recognition combined with thermal imaging technology to help protect businesses, not only from unauthorised entry, but also entry of those who may be sick and who present a risk to others within the venue. The sophisticated cameras are sited at entrances and read the persons temperature automatically while they sign into the track and trace using an app on their mobile phone. No human contact is experienced, so if the person is identified with a high temperature possibly as a cause of COVID-19 or even just flu, the camera will advise them that they cannot be granted access. “We wanted to market a system that not only helps businesses to keep staff and visitors safe but also helps them to manage their premises more effectively” said Managing Director Richard Marshall, “The DoorSentry product helps regulate how many people are in the building at any one time and because of the facial recognition functionality, it means repeat visitors don’t have to keep signing in, the system automatically recognises them. “There’s been huge take-up in Dorset giving us the platform to roll /company/dorset-chamber/

out our products across the UK” said Richard, “IMS Group had the business intelligence and data we needed to really drill down to the target sectors we needed to reach and put together an intelligent and effective strategy – it’s proved really successful, hence why we’re now looking to expand nationwide.” The system also claims to help businesses manage staff attendance and absenteeism among other benefits. If and when Coronavirus becomes a distant memory, the Fevercam technology will still continue to protect businesses from future viruses and even flu, estimated to cost British business 7.6 million working days and £1.35billion per year. The cameras will prevent sick staff members turning up for work and infecting healthy staff members or even patients. The pioneering company have also developed systems that enable businesses to monitor energy and water usage across multiple sites and even supply disinfecting units that kill germs and viruses through the use of UV light sources. The team adopted the name LA Marine and set about establishing the first dedicated shipping and marine law practice in Southampton. Whilst only Russell Kelly remains from the original team, LA Marine was strengthened significantly by the recruitment of Linda Jacques in 2004, who, like Russell, had significant previous experience at leading shipping firms in London. Electric Cars

- What are they all about then? Like it or not, we will all be driving electric cars/ vehicles in the not too distant future. 2030 is only nine years away now and the Government has made it very clear to manufacturers what they need to do. An Electric Vehicle (EV) is deemed to be a vehicle that you can charge externally. Here is a brief outline of the most common types currently available: Pure electric cars (known as BEV’s – battery electric vehicles) where the battery is the only power source. (An example of these are – Nissan LEAF, BMW i3, Volkswagen ID3, Tesla, Jaguar i-Pace, Polestar 2, etc). Plug-in hybrid (known as PHEV’s – plugin hybrid electric vehicles) whereby they have a battery and internal combustion engine (ICE) with a motor and/or engine providing drive. (An example of these are – Mitsubishi Outlander, BMW 330e, Hyundai Ioniq, Volkswagen Golf GTE, Mercedes A250e, etc). So, what’s the difference in cost to run compared to a conventional car? Below are average figures to provide a rough idea of the difference in costs based on pence per mile: • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) – 16p • Plug in Hybrid (PHEV) – 11p • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) – 3p What about charging and how long does it take? Many people are opting to have a home charging unit installed. In our opinion this is a great idea, especially as it is still possible to take advantage of the government grants available. Depending on what type of home charger you go for will determine the cost and how quickly it will charge the car. For example, a 3.6kW (kilowatt) charger will cost circa £449 (inc VAT and installed) and would fully charge a Volkswagen e-Golf in under 10 hours. A 7kW charger is circa £529 and would charge the same car in under 6 hours. (Please be aware this is just an example and different cars will take different lengths of time to charge). Some of the fast chargers available at supermarkets, shopping centres and fuel stations could charge an e-Golf to 80% of its capacity within circa 30 minutes. Government grants are also available for workplace charging points and a great deal of information (for both private and businesses) can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/ government/collections/government-grantsfor-low-emission-vehicles 38

January 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

How can I find out where the charging points are in case I need one when I’m out and about? There are now 6,382 more devices at 4,087 more locations than this time last year and this will continue to grow significantly over the next few years. One of the best websites for finding out what is near to you or how you can plan a route if you are going on a journey is www.zap-map.com So how far will an electric car travel on a full charge? There is a phrase known as Range Anxiety – ‘the fear that a vehicle has insufficient range to reach its destination leaving the occupants stranded’. This is by far the biggest concern for most people and in some circumstances can mean the difference between establishing if an EV is the right vehicle to go for or not. One thing is for sure, EV’s travel a lot further now than they did just a few years ago and the rate at which the technology is moving forward is staggering. Below are examples of some of the ranges achievable from a variety of different manufacturers: •

BMW i3 – 193 miles

Hyundai Kona 64kWh – 299 miles

Mercedes EQC – 259 miles

Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ - 239 miles

Peugeot e-208 – 217 miles

Tesla Model 3 (Long Range) – 348 miles

Vauxhall Corsa-e – 209 miles

Volkswagen e-Golf – 144 miles

Volkswagen ID.3 – 205 miles

Volvo XC40 Recharge – 250 miles

As you can see there is a big variation in the distances covered, but for most people, there is now an EV available which is suitable and worthy of consideration. Many forget an EV does not need to be fully charged. Many users “top up” the charge to 80% as this is quick and gives them with a sensible working daily distance. To give you an idea of the growth in registrations of EV’s, in 2013 there were 6,000 on our roads, in 2018 this number grew to 195,000 and by 2023 it is predicted there will be over 1 million. /company/dorset-chamber/

Are electric cars a good idea for company car drivers? Potentially, yes, very much so. The government is very keen to get more and more people into zero emission cars as quickly as possible. One way to encourage people is to make EV’s as tax efficient as possible, therefore, from this current tax year, the company car tax payable for a car which has zero emissions is zero. Yes, you have read that correctly, no matter whether you are a lower or higher rate taxpayer, you will not pay any tax for having a company car if it is pure electric! Even if it is a Hybrid car the tax is very low compared to a petrol or diesel engine car. There is also a great benefit to the employer as there is no Class 1a National Insurance payable either. You may be thinking the tax payable will go up in the future which is a fair assumption, but, the government has confirmed the tax payable will only rise to 1% (of the cars P11d value) for the next tax year, 2% for the following tax year and will remain unchanged until 2025. Some employers have seen this low rate tax as a way of potentially giving their valued employees a pay rise (by replacing their ‘normal’ car) without actually giving them a pay rise as their net income can increase significantly per month. What about the cost of an EV, I hear they are very expensive? Most electric cars are still benefitting from the government grant of £3,000 off the list price and many of the EV’s funded via a leasing contract are now significantly better priced than they were a couple of years ago. You also need to factor in the fuel savings available and whole life costs such as servicing, etc, as all these factors are essential to consider before disregarding the EV option. Summary Hopefully, you have learnt a bit more about electric cars having read this article. Please be aware this has been written to provide a brief overview and there are a lot of considerations before committing to an EV, but we all need to be thinking about it whether we make the change now or in say 5 years time. #GetBusinessDone www.dorsetcarleasing.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Coronavirus, business recovery and HMRC’s new preferential creditor status Antony Batty are warning Directors to be Beware. Do you know what HMRC’s new status means for you in insolvency? Make sure you know what is in your Finance Agreement Ts and Cs HMRC ‘s status as a creditor of preferential status will be reinstated for formal insolvency proceedings This happened on 1st December 2020. Much has been written about this, but what does it really mean for directors? In particular, what effect will it have on directors’ personal guarantees – and indeed whether the small print in any finance agreement, includes personal liability within any warranty and indemnity clauses – if the company becomes insolvent? In this article, Steve Illes, from Antony Batty, points out that with many thousands of businesses struggling or likely to struggle once the various Government support schemes start to be wound down, “it is vital for directors to know what is in their current agreements, or in those they are about to sign, as personal liability if the business becomes insolvent could be in the Terms & Conditions.” First a recap on the change For more than 15 years, HMRC has not had a preferential claim as a creditor when businesses become insolvent, with their status being the same as other unsecured creditors. However, from 1st December, when a company becomes insolvent and fails, floating charge assets must now first be used to pay preferential creditors, including HMRC. This means that HMRC’s claims for a number of taxes including PAYE, employee NI deductions and VAT will have priority. Effectively this change means that the way HMRC allows what it is owed in tax to accrue going forward could change, and they may become more aggressive, especially given the need to start plugging the huge hole that Covid-19 has made in the Government’s finances, which could lead to increased insolvencies. However, of most importance to directors is the impact HMRC’s change in status will have on their personal liability and personal guarantees if insolvency strikes and how this change will impact on lending decisions. The impact on directors’ personal liabilities and personal guarantees – are directors fully aware? The change of HMRC’s creditor status will have an impact where a director has provided a personal guarantee to a lender (either secured or unsecured), or there are personal liability warranties and indemnities in the terms and conditions, and their company is at risk of insolvency. In an insolvency, a creditor with a personal guarantee and/or warranties and indemnities will 44

January 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

demand repayment from the director personally. However, when a company is at such a point, the impact of HMRC’s new preferential status will likely have an impact on the amounts available to the lenders that hold these guarantees and will result in increased claims against the directors. Not only, therefore, will lenders be more reluctant to lend (at a time when businesses need more cash to keep going) but also for those Directors who have personally guaranteed, or have personal liability for, the borrowings of their Company, there is a heightened risk of demanding a bigger repayment from the Directors. The Impact on lending decisions This is likely to be immediate. This is because for lenders and funders who are reliant on floating charges to recover lending, the security cover position will change with HMRC ranking ahead of the lender. It will also have a negative impact on lending decisions, at a time when cash flow for businesses is tight and they are looking for help in that area. This is not good news for businesses, coming at a time when many are already likely to be carrying higher than normal levels of Crown debt due to the impact of Covid. It is likely that lenders and funders will be ready for this and, as a result, will want to monitor their own lending exposure with greater scrutiny. The outcome is likely to be a requirement from directors for greater security and less room for /company/dorset-chamber/

flexibility if things go wrong. Advice for Directors from our Insolvency Practitioners and Business Recovery Experts: Check your Ts and Cs We know that Directors are already working hard to try and protect their companies during the pandemic so that they can come out the other side as going concerns. There is no doubt that the change in HMRC’s creditor status will make their work even harder. What they need is for the support of their existing lenders and funders to be maintained not put under threat. As Insolvency Practitioners, much of our effort is put into saving businesses and turning them around, and so avoiding insolvency. This will include helping and advising businesses who are threatened because of the change in HMRC’s status, especially where personal guarantees and personal liability is involved. We are here to explain what this change means on a practical level, business by business, work through the financial outcomes with directors and advise on what needs to be done if insolvency looks likely. Sandbanks Ferry submits revised toll application The Sandbanks Ferry Company has submitted a revised toll increase proposal to the Planning Inspectorate following last minute feedback from local Councils. Following the submission of a toll increase application by the Ferry Company in February 2020, a consortium of local Councils – Dorset, BCP and Swanage Town – submitted a counterproposal in November, to which the Ferry Company is now responding. While welcoming much of the Consortium’s proposal, the Ferry Company believes there are some significant issues which its own revised proposal seeks to amend. The amended proposal by the Ferry Company maintains the following aspects of the Consortium’s proposals: •

The acceptance that the Ferry Company will require a certain level of income over the next 12 years as outlined in the Ferry’s original submission in order to purchase a replacement to the current ferry, The Bramble Bush Bay. The removal of the annual inflation-linked increase originally proposed by the Ferry Company, in favour of a simpler structure of small fixed annual increases. The Ferry Company agrees that planned annual increases provide greater clarity and transparency for passengers. The promotion of environmentally friendly travel by proposing a freezing of pedestrian and cyclist tolls for 12 years. This in line with the Ferry’s commitment to help passengers travel in more environmentally friendly ways.

The Ferry Company’s revised proposal also looks to address what the Company believes are a number of issues with the Consortium proposal. In particular, the Consortium’s three annual increases over 12 years would see single ticket car tolls jump immediately from the current £4.50 to £5.50 per journey. This could add £10 per week to a daily commuter’s journey from 2021, disproportionately impacting those on lower wages who may not be able to take advantage of the bulk ticket discount options already available. By contrast, the Ferry Company’s revised application proposes an initial increase of just 50p for cars in 2021 followed by planned, transparent small annual increases at a more gradual level over the proposed 12 year period, taking 6 years to reach the £5.50 proposed by the Consortium for introduction in 2021. Furthermore the Ferry Company’s revised proposal also reiterates that no class of toll would be increased by 50% or doubled immediately, as some parties have suggested. The maximum chargeable tolls – the amount the Company can apply for under legislation - will be phased in over a twelve year period. The Consortium’s proposal also fails to take into account the revenue reductions seen by the Ferry Company in alternate years due to the bi-annual Bramble Bush Bay refits. The Ferry Company’s revised proposal rectifies this omission.

The Ferry Company’s revised proposal also seeks to ensure that costs for local residents who regularly travel by car are offered at an increased discount level, taking discounts up to 32% less than single ticket prices, effectively freezing the cost of book tickets (SFTC Passes) for yet another year. Commenting, Mike Kean, Managing Director of the Sandbanks Chain Ferry, said, “I welcome the constructive, albeit last minute, intervention from these important local Councils into the toll increase application. “Much of their proposal shows a pragmatic understanding of the way in which the Ferry Company is governed by the Act of Parliament and how it can go about securing the future of the service by putting funds aside annually to replace the Bramble Bush Bay when she retires. “That is why we have sought to retain the best of these proposals and improve where needed to create an application that we believe can and will work for everyone going forward.” Periodic toll increases are needed to keep pace with rising costs, maintain safety for passengers and to secure the long-term future of the service. Combined with the Director’s commitment not to pay any dividends until sufficient funds have been set aside annually in the Ferry Replacement Reserve, this ensures that the Bramble Bush Bay can be replaced when deemed necessary by Naval Architects. www.sandbanksferry.co.uk 45

Steele Raymond advises the Drewitt Group on the management buyout The ‘top tier’ Company & Commercial team at Steele Raymond has advised the Drewitt Group on the management buyout (MBO) of its electrical business, Drewlec. Drewlec Ltd – which is the electrical and fire safety arm of the Drewitt Group – is now under ownership of manager Nick Hand. Drewlec Ltd was formed in 1964 when it became part of the wider Drewitt Group which can date its history back to 1877 through six generations of the Drewitt family. The management buyout saw the purchase by Mr Hand of all the shares in Drewlec and the creation of the company as a separate entity from the Drewitt Group, which remains in the control of siblings Richard and Gillian Drewitt who have led the firm for over 30 years.

Making mental health a priority in construction and civil engineering

Speaking about the MBO process, Tim said: “We have enjoyed a fantastic working relationship with Richard and Gillian for many years so were well positioned to be able to advise on the management buyout of Drewlec Ltd. We have decades of experience in handling similar transactions and were able to use this experience to help Richard and Gillian proactively and efficiently manage all of the complex commercial, property and other legal issues associated with the MBO. “We are delighted that Richard and Gillian have achieved their aim to pass the reigns over to Nick and wish Nick and the team at Drewlec every continued success for the future.” Speaking on his experience working with Steele Raymond Richard said: “Having worked with Tim and the team at Steele Raymond for many years, the benefit of having a team that know your business inside-out is invaluable. The professionalism in which the management buyout has been undertaken was impeccable, benefitted us greatly and we are delighted with the outcome for all parties.”

A Dorset construction company has demonstrated their commitment to the wellbeing of industry professionals by employing a dedicated mental health team. Woodmace, who are based in Poole, specialise in groundworks, civil engineering and concrete structures. In a sector which is overwhelmingly male, mental health can hit very close to home. Men account for approximately three quarters of suicide deaths, with it being the leading cause of death in males below the age of 50. Woodmace Group Managing Director, Joshua Eiles-Clarke, said “Of course in our industry there has always been something of a macho culture which for whatever reason can make people reluctant to take care of themselves. It’s something that we’re working on and progress is definitely being made. In much the same way that PPE is now fully accepted and expected on sites, we’re hoping that soon as much emphasis will be placed on mental health as physical health and safety.” The company have had a mental health team in place since January 2020 with professionals stationed both at head office and on sites. One such professional is Woodmace Contracts Manager and Mental Health First Aider John Frain “Mental health has always been an interest of mine so when I was asked to become the point of contact for MHFA within the company I was more than happy to embrace the role, take on a new professional challenge and of course be available to help my fellow colleagues be it with direct advise or just for a helpful chat if and when required” he said. “In terms of reception, people have been thankful and are delighted that Woodmace now have a dedicated MHFA onboard, as this is something that’s never happened before within the company but shows a huge positive step forward not just for Woodmace but within the industry. Woodmace are leading the way as 56% of construction professionals work for organisations with no policies on mental health. However, the risk of suicide in construction is 1.6 times higher than the UK average. As an industry we have a responsibility to look after our employees. The hope is that we will set a trend and in years to come opening up and talking about mental health issues will be just as normal among construction operatives and professionals as putting on your safety boots and high vis!” In recent years mental health is a topic which has rightly been pushed to the fore, particularly with the effects of COVID-19 and the restrictions that have resulted. As the taboo around the subject rightly dissipates, individuals and businesses have the opportunity to take the initiative in caring for the people around them. Having trained staff on call to deal with concerns seems like a step in the right direction. Should others follow suit it can only benefit employees and society as a whole.

www.woodmace.co.uk

Richard Drewitt, Director at the Drewitt Group said:

“As with any family-run business, succession planning starts almost as soon as the new generation takes over from the last. “It became clear that the right decision for the future success of Drewlec was to look outside of the Drewitt family, handing over the firm to someone who understands and represents the strong family values established over the years. “Nick began his career at Drewlec as a trainee contracts manager in 2011 and has progressed through the ranks of the firm. “The inevitable career progression for him was to lead the firm, and we are delighted to be able to hand Drewlec to someone who has been so integral to the company’s recent success.” The MBO was led by Partner and head of the Company and Commercial team at Steele Raymond Tim Stone who specialises in business mergers and acquisitions and is noted in the 2021 Legal 500 a ‘Leading Individual’ across the region. The Steele Raymond team provided advice on a wide variety of legal matters including company law, banking and finance, property and employment matters.

The Southampton office of Lambert Smith Hampton brokered a deal for the freehold of the property with a long term lease agreed with Paloma Capital.

CFA win Microsoft EMEA award for top sales in 2020 Local technology refurbishing company CFA.LTD have been awarded the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher award for Europe, Middle East and Africa for 2020. Having previously been No 1 for the UK and then Europe, this is another accolade for the company, which operates in Poole, and aims to be World No 1 MAR. I spoke to founder Leon Lindblad to find out what the award means and why CFA is so successful in the refurbishing industry. ‘Collaboration is the answer’, states Leon. ‘Collaboration and partnership with our customers have always been a key focus of our ethos. We are the only MAR company that offers all our services to other companies. I strongly believe that there is enough business for all of us and that by providing services such as keyboard reprinting, selling skins and technical support for free we are helping to raise standards across the industry. Every trader in refurbished devices has to install a Windows licence to sell their product and while most MAR companies are only interested in selling the licences, we enable traders to add value as well, to get a Grade A product. Installing the licences can be a tricky

and complicated procedure, so we now have dedicated people rewriting the software to make it more user friendly. This means that companies will be able to load their machines more quickly with enhanced features.’ Leon is working to establish an industry standard for all refurbished products. All CFA devices are subject to a rigorous Quality and Assessment process with a guaranteed ‘Certified Refurbished’ assigned by the company before they leave the warehouse. This process has been developed by the CFA team and is continually evolving. ‘I have been itching to create an industry standard for years, and now that the refurbishment business is well established, the market is definitely ready for it. BSI Kitemarking have started to work on standards and I am hoping they will be able to use our research and progress over the past 15 years to help them develop a definitive industry standard. DRIVEN BY STEVE Steve Bulley Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic

We all remember the Skoda jokes like, Why do Skodas have heated rear windscreens? To keep your hands warm while you’re pushing it! If you haven’t looked at the brand recently you are missing out on understated and upmarket cars that are incredible value. The latest Skoda Octavia hatchback and estate are actually the same length which makes driving and parking the estate version a breeze.

Outside the colour of this car, quartz grey doesn’t do it justice. The creases and curves are all spot on and give the car a very modern look. I personally love the pride that Skoda now has in putting the brand name across the back of their entire range. This is an incredibly practical car for the family or business the boot space is 640 litres, easily best in class. The Octavia remains tardislike and is bigger than rivals from

SKODA OCTAVIA 1.5 TSI SE L First Edition 5dr Mercedes, Audi and BMW. On the road the car is smooth and belies its size, the 1.5TSI engine is quiet and features technology that runs on just 2 cylinders when able to meaning the fuel economy I managed never fell below 44mpg and on a longer trip I managed around 48mpg. You feel safe with front assist, lane assist and adaptive cruise control (with “follow-to-stop”) and speed limiter. Inside the Virtual Cockpit display on this model is what you find in VW, SEAT and Audi models and gives a variety of choices including the satnav which I found useful. The materials feel good quality and with heated seats I felt very snug. If you like buttons you will be in for a surprise. The Octavia has followed the trend of using a large display to alter a majority of functions and this took some getting used to. Also to charge your phone or other accessories you need a USB-C cable as the

Octavia does not have standard USB ports. Overall it’s hard to find fault with the Octavia, it’s a practical, comfortable, stylish car that still remains quirky with an umbrella in passenger door (something shared with Rolls Royce,) Ice scraper in its fuel cap and the ticket holder on the driver’s side A-pillar. This car as tested was fitted with optional LED Matrix headlights, 18” Persius Alloys and comes with a BIK of 28%. This keeps me busy, especially as we now have full in-house CNC turning and milling capabilities, but I just couldn't resist the Ashley opportunity when Graham approached me". Mark adds, "Despite the pandemic I'm pleased to report that we're already making great progress and I've been able to keep all of the team in employment, even Graham, who's slowly easing into retirement! The biggest change I've

made is to rebrand back to Ashley Bearings as that's how we're fondly known in Poole, and some people thought the name 'Ashley Power' implied we supply gas and electricity! DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

The world of work is changing; will it ever be the same again? The global pandemic has had far reaching consequences to date, including lockdowns disrupting work and home lives, a sudden shift to working from home and unfortunately millions have lost their jobs. Heidi Skirrow, Absolute Works Dorset HR & Employment Law shares her thoughts. The future feels uncertain and will inevitably be different to that which we have considered to be our norm. Can we really predict what that future looks like in the world of work, post-pandemic? One thing I do know is that there’s been a fundamental shift in the way we work. Home working and remote working to a certain extent for some, has been normalised as a result and the way in which we behave, connect and communicate may well have changed forever. The pandemic has created an opportunity to stand back and look at new possibilities in how we work and how Organisations are run. I believe that we’ve learnt the importance of trust, accountability and flexibility and that we can still maintain quality and productivity by working remotely. Many Organisations are looking to modernise ways of working and re-emerge from this pandemic even stronger, reframing the way in which they connect, collaborate and communicate. The traditional notion of 9-5 presenteeism in an office has been blown out of the water for some and leaders are tuning in to the possibility of doing things very differently. Microsoft & Fujitsu are leading the way having announced that they will be allowing their employees to work from home permanently. Organisations are breaking away from the oldfashioned premise of measuring presenteeism to measuring output whilst at the same time learning and evolving to create a more virtual world of work. This will provide the ability to drive greater diversity within the workforce giving greater access to new pools of talent such as people with disabilities and working mothers. For example, it’s well known that

women are more likely to have a need to balance their work-life with family responsibilities, meaning that often one is sacrificed for the other. Remote working could create a more level playing field with women better able to balance the two. It is in any Organisations best interests to remember to consider inclusivity alongside diversity to ensure the diverse talent can thrive. Many employees are asking themselves the question, will we ever go back to the office and if we do will that now be a hybrid approach between office and home and what impact will this have on how we work, communicate, socialise and innovate? My guess is that a blended model is likely as leaders attempt to balance the efficiencies gained by remote working with the benefits associated with working face to face with others such innovation, creativity and social interaction. A hybrid model may allow the best of both worlds as the advantages of remote working and providing employees with the freedom to work in ways suited to their needs are balanced with the disadvantages which can be, the lack of boundaries between work and home life, zoom fatigue, extended working days, perhaps less coaching, training and support and indeed loneliness and lower mental health. Virtual worlds of work will emerge spread across home, office and satellite offices. Employees are realising that they have more choice as to where to work and live as a result and expectations regarding working conditions, flexibility and employees choosing how they want to work have never been higher. Is this now irreversible? Employees enjoy skipping the daily commute, being trusted and having the flexibility to attend to their personal needs by customising their days. Progressive Organisations that take the opportunity to embrace and adapt to these new expectations post pandemic, will undoubtedly gain huge competitive advantage, gaining

and retaining talent and driving higher employee engagement leading to higher productivity and loyalty. The opportunity of sourcing talent more easily will present itself, enabling greater diversity and obtaining skills under-represented locally. Organisations will need to seriously consider their culture to allow strength within that of trust and a sense of belonging alongside how they will support their leaders to manage remote teams effectively. How will they maintain team spirit, trust? How will they motivate, coach and evaluate performance and wellbeing? How will they ensure collaboration, communication? This will not be easy but can be done. Coupled with all this change, will be how Organisations can successfully adapt their tools and technology and transform their digital strategy to support the effectiveness of this new way of working. Some of the questions Organisations need to ask themselves are; Does the technology enable multiple ways of working? Is the IT security tailored to this new way of working? Do we have applications that enable new ways of working and collaboration

with ease? How will we develop the digital capabilities of our employees? In my opinion, it’s safe to say that we’ve all had a crash course recently in modern technology but perhaps this too is a catalyst for change. However, what about those who can’t work from home? Will things change for them? The answer is, yes probably for some. Daily commutes are likely to be less congested and business travel likely reduced. However, there may well be a downside that will likely result in less of a requirement for the roles which support travel and office working. Maybe a reduction in the need for transportation, catering, cleaning and maintenance and the detrimental impact upon commercial real estate and of course retail. How will we respond to safeguarding these employees? Increased access to training or education? Programmes to support the development of new skills? Whatever the future holds, the current shift is consequential. www.absoluteworks.co.uk/hrdorset 53

Turning the pandemic on its head: new venture opens at Poole Quay Hennings Quayside Eatery, Bar and Boutique Gifts has opened on Poole Quay, creating new jobs and giving the area a brand-new offering. The venture from well-known and awardwinning Chamber member, Signature Catering, came about as the result of the unit the events catering company worked from falling silent during the pandemic, and a customer care call to one of its clients, City Cruises. The national cruise company which has office space at Poole Quay, was also operating the café on the ground floor. As the two companies already had an established working relationship, the discussion soon turned to handing over the running of the café to Ian Davey and his business partner Richard Abson. Since the ground floor also has enough space for event catering, Signature Catering has been able to give up its lease on the redundant unit and move to premises where it can generate a

public-facing income until such a time that the event catering business also picks up. Ian Davey said: “We were able to take a government Bounce Back Loan to ensure the restaurant and catering area are as needed for a sustainable future. We’re now welcoming people for COVID-secure coffee, patisseries charcuterie, and main meals, while our small boutique has a range of lovely gifts. As COVID restrictions change, we are working towards having a 40-50 cover event space and we have an outside area, which we will open when the weather is brighter too. We’d love to welcome other Chamber members and customers, so please do come and say hello!” Hennings Eatery, and Boutique and Gifts is located on Poole Quay and sources its produce from local suppliers, farms and butchers.
