Avoiding own goals in relation to your employees’ use of social media
Even those who aren’t football fans will have noticed that the recent suspension and subsequent reinstatement of Gary Lineker from his BBC duties dominated the headlines for several days. His ‘employer’ (although he is, according to the paperwork, a ‘freelancer’) didn’t approve of something he said on Twitter, and this is a scenario being faced up and down the country by businesses who consider that something an employee has posted on social media has caused them reputational damage.
Social media is an incredibly useful tool for businesses to promote themselves and engage with their customers. However, it can also cause reputational damage and worse where an employee posts something of their own accord that does not align with your vision and ethos. So, how far can employers go to restrict what their staff say and do on social media?
Your first line of defence against potentially damaging social media use by staff should be your social media policy. A well-crafted social media policy should set out your expectations in respect of the use of social media by staff in a professional capacity, during working hours, and where it is used in a personal capacity that can be linked back to your organisation. Where an employee’s duties include using social media as part of your marketing, or recruitment activities, you should provide additional guidelines and training so that they can use appropriate language and tone when commenting via social media.
Provisions to cover in an effective social media policy include:
1. A requirement to avoid making any social media communications that could damage your business interests or reputation, either directly or indirectly.
2. Prohibiting the use of social media to:
a. disparage your business, staff, customers or business contacts;
b. harass, bully or discriminate against staff or third parties;
c. make false or misleading statements in relation to your business; or
d. impersonate colleagues or third party business contacts.
3. An explicit instruction not to express opinions on the business’ behalf via social media, unless expressly authorised to do so.
4. A requirement not to comment on social media about sensitive topics related to your business, or trade secrets, confidential information or intellectual property.
5. Prohibiting the use of your logos or other trademarks in any social media posting or in the employee’s profile.
6. Guidelines on what you consider responsible use of social media to look like.
You should cover the use of social media in your bullying and harassment policy, and in any related training programme.
Training staff on what is acceptable in their use of social media is also an important step you should take. It is easy to have the rules tucked away in your handbook and to point to them in the event of a breach by an employee, but training sessions at appropriate intervals will ensure that staff are reminded of your expectations and can help stop the damage happening in the first place. Your social media policy should make clear that a breach of those rules will be dealt with by way of a formal disciplinary process. Usually a breach will result in a warning or final written warning, but particularly serious breaches can amount to gross misconduct and summary
dismissal. You should be careful if you are considering dismissing an employee for a first instance misuse of social media though, as an over-reaction on your part could result in them bringing an unfair dismissal claim.
You should also bear in mind that it is much harder to take disciplinary action for a breach that occurs outside office hours, even where there is some real damage caused to your business. In determining whether any sanction you impose on an individual was reasonable in relation to the use of social media outside of work (most commonly in the event of an unfair dismissal claim being brought), an employment tribunal will expect you not to take a disproportionate view of the damage or potential damage to your reputation just because material that does not put your business in the best light comes into the public arena. The guidance you have given on corporate image and reputation in relation to social media posts will also be important, and so that highlights the benefit of having a clear policy in place.
If you have any questions about the use of social media by staff, drafting a social media policy or providing suitable training to staff, our employment specialists are here to help. You can get in touch by emailing online.enquiries@la-law.com or, if your query is urgent, please call 01202 786135.

Duo guests at Respect and Citizenship workshop
President’s Column
by Caron Khan
Honouring our Past President Liz Willingham
I would like to take this opportunity in my column to recognise Dorset Chamber’s past President Liz Willingham. Liz Willingham who is founder and Managing Director of Liz Lean PR, has been a valued board member for 9 years and a loyal friend and member of the chamber for over 20 years. Liz became President in December 2018 and was our very first President to ever serve two consecutive years. Liz also ensures Dorset business’s voice is heard at a national level and has been appointed to the board of the British Chambers of Commerce.
Liz has been behind so many of Dorset Chamber’s projects and campaigns including the successful DBA’s and most recently the work around mental health and wellbeing. Her passion for supporting the business community and encouraging positive mental health saw her create GU6 a new initiative to help build the resilience of business leaders during what has been potentially the most challenging business climate of our time.
AFC Bournemouth loan star Jack Stephens and Cherries legend Steve Fletcher were on hand to help deliver an insightful Respect and Citizenship workshop at St Peter’s Primary School.
Organised by the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust, the workshop looks at how children’s love for sport and football can be linked to help encourage positive behaviour.
The session was supported by Goadsby, a leading independent estate agent in central southern England and a long-standing official partner of the Community Sports Trust.
Stephens and Fletcher conducted an informative question-and-answer session and the children took part in fun activities and games, displaying examples of how to show respect in sport.
Defender Stephens, who is on loan to the Cherries from Southampton, said: “It’s great to be able to come here to speak to the children about respect in sport and football and to give them the inspiration and right morals.
“It’s really important we set the guidelines and show them how to act as people and how to treat other people as well.
“As a sportsperson, competitiveness, and a will to win are important but you have to try to do it in the right way.
“It’s difficult at times and, sometimes, with the emotion, you can overstep the mark. But, on the whole, it’s important you stay respectful of the opposition. When you win, you do it respectfully and, when you
lose, you need to be respectful as well.”
Paul Stewart, commercial company MD at Goadsby, said: “In what is our ninth consecutive year of sponsoring the AFCB Community Sports Trust, we have seen the schools project, Respect and Citizenship campaign, grow in popularity with the club now delivering around 100 classes throughout the local conurbation every season.
“Having witnessed a lesson in progress, it is evident the children are engaged and enthused by the sterling work of Steve Cuss and his team – keep up the amazing work!”
Steve Cuss, who heads the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust, hosted the workshop and said: “In partnership with Goadsby, we go around all the local schools delivering respect workshops.
“It’s a really good workshop in terms of looking at behaviours within the classroom and school and then relating that to the football pitch and sporting environment.
“As we try to educate within schools, we want to produce winners and everybody likes to win but there’s a right and a wrong way to do that. We try to highlight that within the lesson – be respectful both when you’re winning and losing. It’s a really good life skill as well as a sporting one. www.afcb.co.uk
The ground-breaking project is named ‘Got your 6’ (or GU6) after the term originating from WW2, where fighter pilots of the US Navy or Air Force would watch the ‘backs’ of fellow pilots in formation at the vulnerable rear ‘six o’clock’ position.
Due to the pandemic lock down Liz missed having a President’s Lunch but during that unprecedented time, when she had her own business to look after, she managed to steer the chamber ship carefully and calmly through extremely stormy waters by supporting Ian and his team around the clock.
So, from one President to another, and on behalf of Dorset Chamber and the Dorset business community I would like to thank Liz for her incredible and outstanding contribution and long service to business.

Are business plans worth the effort?
Every business has a plan, even if it isn’t a formal written document. But sometimes that plan can become complicated or a bit unfocussed, and even when it’s a good plan, often it’s not being used on a day-to-day basis to help drive growth and performance by everyone else in the business.
Putting together a comprehensive business plan can be a great starting point to outline the journey to growing your business.
Why create a business plan?
1. It defines your goals and objectives: By setting measurable goals and strategic objectives it will allow you to track your progress and make informed decisions based on relevant data.
2. To analyse your market: By undergoing detailed analysis of your market you can identify trends, your main competitors and understand your customers needs. By understanding your market you will be able to create a successful sales & marketing strategy
to differentiate your business from the competition and grow the top line.
3. Secure finance: A detailed business plan can help you to secure finance from either the bank, alternative lenders or private equity. Your business plan demonstrates having a clear vision, realistic financial projections and potential for growth. By putting the above down on paper and setting specific goals related to these areas you will define any potential challenges or risks, provide yourself with a roadmap for growth and improve your decision making within the organisation.
How can you use your business plan to deliver high growth?
Once you have your business plan you should have some key areas of focus to deliver growth. By focusing on these areas you can set specific goals and measure performance and adjust as needed to meet your targets. We’ve worked with lots of high growth and high performance businesses, of all shapes and sizes, and what they all have in common is absolute clarity and a laser focus on two critical questions.
1. How much of your growth will come from existing clients and how much from new clients?
2. Which types of clients and which products/services have the most growth potential
These are two simple, but powerful insights to drive their growth as:
• They ensure the sales team are focused and don’t waste time chasing the wrong prospects or missing opportunities that are under their noses.
• The marketing function has a clear brief and can spend the marketing budget more effectively and with better Return On Investment.
• The business plan is directly linked into sales, marketing and operations, and is used every day to help drive the business forward.
Once you think of your growth plan through this simple approach, it can remove the noise and add clarity throughout the business.

Financial resilience in uncertain times
A tough economic situation does not make for a stable market, but careful financial resilience planning will help with decision making during these times; whilst any downturn brings severe challenges for some, there are often ways to minimise the impact – and for well-managed businesses there will be opportunities.
The key to thriving is your business plan, with business leaders stepping back from the day-to-day to consider what could happen and how the organisation would react. Setting your business up to embrace the challenges that may be faced and to capitalise on the opportunities as they arise will ensure your success.
For all businesses, the people within it are at the centre of embracing changes and ensuring success.
Business leaders looking to thrive should plan for the following key areas:
Leadership – In times of uncertainty, teams look to their leaders for guidance and support. Nurturing optimism and supporting people in adapting to new and complex situations ensures that your team are pulling in the same direction when you need them the most Strategy – Clarity over, and communication of, your strategic objectives ensures you and your team are aiming for the same goal
when it counts. When it comes to decision making, having a clear strategy will help guide you towards the outcome you are seeking
Innovation – Often challenges can be overcome, and opportunities embraced, through innovation. Empowering teams to innovate shares the load of overcoming challenges and making the most of opportunities as they arise
Organisational agility – The majority of businesses will be faced with both difficult decisions and positive prospects in the next 12 months. Creating an organisation which embraces change and can be responsive will mean you are well-placed for what the future may hold In a contracting economy, opportunities for organic growth become limited, leading ambitious management teams to look for opportunities to grow through acquisition. When evaluating potential deals and budgeting, detailed and up-to-date financial data is essential to inform decision-making.
High quality financial data will also help businesses to secure additional funding – whether equity or debt – to support a transaction. The more detail you can give your funders or investors, the more willing they are going to be to support you – either through more funding or
more preferential rates or structures. By really understanding your business and having insights at a granular level, you have more opportunity to think about where the growth levers are when preparing budgets. For example, understanding your gross margin mix is key to knowing what service or product lines you should be focusing on, or where the risk areas are that could stifle growth. It’s not just about growth – it’s about financial resilience and managing the current climate. If management teams take a step back and understand the drivers and dynamics of their sector, they can properly plan for the scenarios they are likely to face.

Protecting your business assets
As a business owner, protecting your assets is a critical part of ensuring the long-term success of your enterprise. Your assets, which may include equipment, buildings, inventory, and intellectual property, are essential components of your business, and without adequate protection, they could be lost or damaged, leading to devastating financial losses. This is why business insurance is essential, as it covers your assets in the event of unexpected losses. Insurance is designed to protect your business against a range of risks, such as natural disasters, theft, lawsuits, and other unforeseen events that could harm your business. Not forgetting that as a business owner, it’s crucial to recognise the value of your staff as a key resource, which is often overlooked. You should consider the potential risks such as injuries, serious illnesses, or
Sarah Smith, group operations director,
Insurance Group
even death that may impact your employees. Failing to protect them can leave your business exposed to insufficient resources, incomplete projects, and financial risks. However, choosing the right insurance coverage can be challenging, as there are many different types of policies available, each with its own set of terms, conditions, and exclusions. Moreover, making a claim can be a complicated process, and if you don’t understand the ins and outs of your policy, you could end up making costly mistakes.
Here are some practical tips to consider when sourcing cover and making a claim:
Assess Your Risks: Before you start looking for insurance coverage, you should first assess the risks that your business faces. For instance, if you own a retail store, you may need coverage for theft and liability, whereas, if you operate a manufacturing plant, you may need coverage for equipment breakdowns and product liability.
Understand Your Coverage: When you’re shopping for insurance coverage, it’s important to read the policy documents carefully and understand what is covered and what is not. Look for exclusions, limitations, deductibles, and other important details that could affect your coverage.
Work with an experienced broker: This is crucial to secure the appropriate
coverage for your business. With their expertise, they can assist you in navigating the intricate insurance industry, identifying the numerous policies that may not be apparent to others, and suggest the most suitable policies and insurance arrangements tailored to your requirements. Document Everything: To facilitate a swift and seamless settlement of your claim, it is imperative to document all aspects of the loss comprehensively, including the incident’s date, time, and particulars. Capture photographs or videos of any damage or loss and retain all receipts and invoices pertaining to the loss. This approach greatly assists towards a timely resolution of your claim.
Notify Your Insurer Promptly: If you need to make a claim, it’s important to notify your insurer as soon as possible. Often, insurance policies have specific deadlines for making claims, so it’s essential to act quickly.

Lighthouse makes it easier
Lighthouse Poole has introduced a new online booking system to enable people to buy accessible tickets more easily.
It means that for the first time, people can book wheelchair spaces and, if needed, a free ticket for their carer/PA, without having to phone the Ticket Office or book over the counter.
Lighthouse implemented the new system as part of the redesign of its website after listening to feedback from audiences and a recent ‘secret shopper’ survey carried out by a person with a wheelchair found the venue “exceeded expectations.”
Having set up a Lighthouse account, people who want to book accessible tickets are invited to register their needs from a list. Their responses are then stored as tags on their account so that when they log in to book tickets, they see a venue seating plan tailored to their specific needs highlighting relevant seats. For example, if they need a space for a large wheelchair space those seats will be flagged on the venue seating plan.
Existing customers who already book accessible tickets have already been invited to register again and update their access requirements. Help is available for those who would like to be talked through the process.
“This project followed a thorough review of our booking processes that we felt is absolutely vital for our customers,” says Tom Shallaker, Lighthouse Fundraising and Ticket Sales Manager.
“It is essential that customers with access requirements are able to book their tickets online just as everybody else can. We’ve been really pleased with the uptake and the feedback from customers so far, and we will continue our work to continue to improve ways that all customers can book tickets.”

Poole Audi is the UK’s Audi Centre of the Year
Poole Audi was delighted to be recognised as ‘Audi Centre of the Year 2022’ by Audi UK. This award is presented annually to the Audi Centre which has achieved a consistently high performance across both the sales and aftersales departments.

The Talbot Innovation Quarter:
The application to develop land adjacent to the universities has been jointly submitted by Talbot Village Trust (TVT) and Nuffield Health following extensive public consultation. The scheme reflects many of the strategic economic development objectives set out by BCP Council and Dorset LEP and echoes the Chancellor’s ambitions for innovation hubs to open across the country. The Talbot Innovation Quarter is set to create a fulcrum connecting the two universities, local people, and businesses including Nuffield Health.
Nick Shaftesbury, Chairman at TVT, said: “Our vision is that the Innovation Quarter will be a physical embodiment of the thriving creative digital and tech sectors in Dorset, and will become a major part of the county’s growing innovation ecosystem. The ambition is to create a focus for research and development to support businesses across Dorset, as well as attracting additional investment, and new talent.”
The Innovation Quarter is set to deliver £97m GVA per annum, 1,370 net additional
full time equivalent jobs across Dorset (1,080 FTE on-site), and additional earnings of £48m per annum. This investment into the local economy is anticipated to act as a catalyst for VC investment and funding for university research.
In 2020, BCP Council reported that the area is a potential world-leader in tech, having ranked first in the UK for tech startups, representing 28% of the businesses created in 2019 and outperforming the national average. With links to the Dorset 5G network and thanks to its co-location with BU and AUB, the Innovation Quarter development would deliver a state-of-theart focal point for innovation and assist Dorset in realising its global potential.
Nick Shaftesbury added: “Creativity and innovation is the lifeblood of BCP’s economy, and the conurbation has long standing credentials in this space. Guglielmo Marconi established his wireless communication station in the 1890s in the locality, and Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the Internet, began his career in Poole during the 1970s.
“Today, there is a hubbub of exciting activity happening across Poole, Bournemouth town
centre, Winfrith and beyond. It is our ambition that the development of an Innovation Quarter would provide a catalyst for this activity, accelerate recognition of local work on a global stage, and ultimately turbo charge innovation and creative success in Dorset.
“Importantly, our proposals include extensive environmental initiatives to improve biodiversity and support people to live well in Dorset, including a Heathland Support Area, extensive planting and creation of new habitats across the Innovation Quarter and the creation of a growing hub.”
Crucially, the Innovation Quarter proposals include a new Nuffield Health hospital, to respond to urgent and changing community needs. As well as supporting already stretched healthcare services, a new hospital will allow for existing research programmes to be developed, in conjunction with the universities resulting in more efficient and user-friendly procedures for patients across the globe.

Imagine checking your phone and suddenly seeing this message: “We know your password is XYZ – and we know much more than that! Unless you pay us, private videos of you will be sent to all your contacts.” Reading an email like this would no doubt leave the recipient
anxious. However, cyber blackmail and sextortion scams are often presented as more terrifying than they really are, but this does not make them less of a real issue. ESET UK, experts in digital security and innovation, have shared tips on what to do if you receive a message from a hacker.
Don’t panic - Cybercriminals often hope to manipulate you into rushed actions using false information, so anything stated in their message may be untrue.
Don’t interact - The messages may include hidden malware, so avoid clicking on any links, attachments, or images.
Don’t pay - Paying cybercriminals helps them to continue with their illegal businesses, and in most cases, not paying the ransom may not lead to any consequences.
Don’t leave your accounts unsecuredCybercriminals may target their victims based on lists of leaked credentials. Try to regularly change your passwords, use different passwords for each of your accounts, and use a password manager so you can keep track of them.

How to reduce the impact of Inheritance Tax
How will EPC Regulations affect landlords? finance
Inheritance tax (IHT), once thought of as a tax on the truly affluent, now affects more families than ever before.
Leaving loved ones to incur up to a 40% reduction due to tax on their inheritance is a hard ask. Yet despite many children and grandchildren being ill-equipped to grapple with IHT, more and more families are having to deal with it.
It’s a situation that is set to continue, with the Office of Budget Responsibility forecasting that IHT revenues will reach £8.4 billion by 2026/2027.
In better news for your family, the residence nil-rate band threshold is set at £175,000 for those who qualify when passing their main residence to direct lineal dependents. This goes some way to reflect surges in property prices, as well as other asset values recovering, which together have dragged more households into the IHT net.
What exactly could your family be liable for? We’ve already discussed the residence nil-rate band threshold of £175,000. Then you can factor in that the first £325,000 of your estate is likely to be exempt from IHT. This means that, subject to various conditions, if you’re married or in a civil partnership, you could have a tax-free estate worth £1,000,000. Yet, the simple fact is that IHT could be considered a voluntary tax. The Treasury relies on our inertia and reluctance to confront the issues of death and inheritance. To make things worse, the Treasury’s coffers are boosted at the exact time your loved ones least need the added hassle.
Help your family now: There are many perfectly legitimate ways to mitigate IHT through foresight and careful financial planning. You don’t need high-powered tax planning, just a willingness to discuss the issue as a family, act and make use of the many options available.

Nick Miles,
On 1 April 2023, the next round of EPC Regulations came into force as part of the government’s push to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
From that date, all rented commercial property must have an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of band ‘E’ or better to be let or sold. Failure to achieve this will see landlords face potential fines of up to £150,000. What does it mean for landlords?
Landlords are required by law to ensure that their properties meet the required EPC rating. Currently, all commercial property must hold an EPC rating of band ‘E’ or better prior to any new leases or renewals being granted.
From 1 April 2023 this was extended to all rented commercial properties, including properties where the leases are mid-term. Looking ahead further still, the minimum standard will be increased to band ‘C’ by 1 April 2027 and band ‘B’ by 1 April 2030.
Are there any exceptions?
Whilst the new Regulations apply to all rented commercial premises (with limited exceptions), exemptions can apply where undertaking works to improve an EPC rating is either not possible or not economically viable.
Landlords seeking an exemption must make sure to apply for, and register, an exemption which is valid from 6 months up to five years.
Get an EPC Assessment
It is good idea to get an EPC assessment done as the resulting recommendation report will give you a good place to start in establishing what additional measures or works are required to improve the energy rating of your building.
Completing this exercise in advance of needing a new EPC for your property will allow you the time to plan and budget for the works required to ensure your building remains lettable at the next relevant lease event.
These works can then be incorporated into the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedule for your building.
Who pays for the works?
Careful review of the lease will determine whether the landlord or tenant is responsible for the building fabric and services, and therefore who should implement and pay for the improvement works.
Vail Williams’ can provide the technical expertise and property advice necessary to support you in improving your EPC rating, whether you are a landlord or tenant. Get in touch for more information.

Name Your Price!
After a relatively quiet couple of months, the permanent recruitment market is on the up again with new vacancies coming through the door daily, so there are opportunities aplenty. The active available candidate market continues to be tight, so recruiters are increasingly trying to uncover and attract passive candidates who are perhaps sitting on the fence about making a move.
Over the last 12 months we have seen increases in starting salaries and benefits packages like never before, this has become unavoidable for companies who are serious about attracting the best talent, and whilst this has given us recruiters a fighting chance of delivering on our service commitments, it has not come without some frustration.
For some specific roles that are integral to the business, companies have had to break existing pay structures in a bid to try and attract people, this of course has been a necessary move, but when asking agency supply partners for support with recruitment we are being asked more and more not to advertise salaries, and in my experience this makes a potentially productive job advert almost redundant. Granted when we as consumers see a product marketed without a price, this generally means it is going to be a lot of money, sadly when it comes to the job market the assumption can be quite the opposite.
So, if we are serious about tapping into that all important passive candidate market, I would advocate full disclosure with salary and benefit details. ‘Name your price’ and let people know what you can offer, absolute transparency sends the right message about your business from the outset, which in itself is a very attractive quality.

Open your garden for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance
Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is excited to announce the return of its ‘Open Gardens’ initiative this year.
Running all year round, with a Spring/Summer theme taking place from April to September and an Autumn/Winter theme taking place from October to March, the charity’s Open Gardens initiative aims to bring local communities across Dorset and Somerset together, to celebrate the wonderful gardens spread across both counties, whilst raising awareness and funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
No matter the size of the garden or whether they are pristine or wild, the charity is inviting everyone to get involved and to spend time outdoors, as a great way to promote health and wellbeing within their local community.
Last year, a fantastic array of open garden events were held in aid of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, raising over £8,570 for the life-saving charity. Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance receives no direct funding from the Government or the National Lottery and relies on the generosity of the public to help raise their operational costs of over £5 million per year.

4Couture reaffirms commitment to real living wage
4Couture is now accredited as a Living Wage Employer.
Dorset-based business 4Couture is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Corporate Clothing, Workwear and Branded Promotional Merchandise.
Their commitment to the real Living Wage ensures that everyone working at 4Couture will receive at least a minimum hourly wage of £10.90. This is significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £9.50 per hour.
Obtaining the accreditation might be a recent development, but the team at 4Couture are no stranger to fair wages – they’ve been paying their employees higher than the minimum wage since the company was incorporated 20 years ago. The official Living Wage accreditation confirms their existing commitment to making sure that all 4Couture employees get a fair deal.

Taking time away from work is important. It helps us recharge our batteries, refocus on what is important and allows us to come back feeling refreshed and productive. Managers can help their staff feel confident asking for and taking leave by leading by example, and taking and enjoying their own well-earned breaks.
As we know, an extra bank holiday is due on 8 May 2023 for the coronation of King Charles. Under the Working Time Regulations most workers have the right to a certain amount of paid leave each year, but there is no statutory entitlement to have time off (whether paid or not) on bank holidays.
Whether an individual is expected to work on a bank holiday or entitled to take it as paid or unpaid leave will be determined by the wording of their contract.
Arrangements such as being given a day off in lieu of the bank holiday will vary widely between organisations, and many industries must continue to provide essential services during bank holidays. Employers will wish to consider how they balance the impact of the extra bank holiday on their business activities, against the goodwill that can be gained by allowing staff to enjoy an additional day away from work.

Dorset Chamber gains seal of approval charity FOCUS ON
Dorset Chamber has retained its status as one of the country’s top business support and membership organisations.
It was successfully re-accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) following a rigorous inspection.
The chamber was praised for its ‘motivated and happy workforce’ and ‘excellent initiatives’ which could be adopted by counterparts nationwide.
Ian Girling, Dorset Chamber chief executive, said: “Accreditation is a hallmark of excellence for chambers of commerce.
“We’re proud of retaining this prestigious status which demonstrates our commitment to our members, business in Dorset and the highest standards of governance, service and financial management.
“It also places us in a unique position to act as the voice of business in Dorset to champion the county’s many brilliant companies while working closely with our fellow accredited chambers to fight the corner of business nationally.”
Ian added: “Many thanks to the talented chamber team for working so hard to ensure we regained our accreditation through their excellent work.”
Dorset is the only chamber in the county accredited by the BCC. It is one of 53 such chambers nationwide.
The BCC inspects chambers every three years for their accreditation, covering finance and resources, governance and services,
including international trade.
As well as praising Dorset for its ‘clearly happy and motivated workforce’, inspectors also hailed its leadership and focus.
They said: “It is a well-run and led chamber, which is really trying to make a difference to its members and local area, and has some excellent initiatives in place to support members and their staff.”
Among initiatives upon which Dorset is leading the way and could be shared with other chambers are its car sharing scheme, Future Leaders Group, Got Your Six mental health programme, health and wellbeing drive and inclusivity and diversity forum.
Dorset Chamber has more than 700 members. It is set to hold its first Business Festival in October combining a major conference, expo and new-look awards in association with Lester Aldridge. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk
A great leap forward in the Luxury Electric SUV market DRIVEN
It’s been more than four years since the original E-Tron was launched, the new Audi Q8 model is a great leap forward in the luxury electric SUV market.
It looks quite different to the old E-Tron. A lot more aggressive design and it’s gained a much more impressive range, more technology and even more design tweaks.
It comes with more battery capacity, the 50 gets an 89kWh battery while the 55 gets 106kWh. Maximum range is up to 281 miles for the 50 and 343 miles for the 55. Charging has also been uprated, with the 50 getting 150kW fast charging capability and the 55 170kW.
There have been tweaks made to the
ESC system, air-suspension as standard makes it feel more alert on the road and excellent ride quality. It’s still a quick car, with a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds.
Road noise is kept to a minimum and wind noise is almost non-existent, the virtual mirrors also play a part in this, but they are a marmite feature, standard mirrors are an option.
Plenty of room and nicely trimmed, with a wide choice of options. The car is built in a CO2-neutral factory in Brussels and powered by 100% green energy using recycled plastics from old Audis.
This is a totally new e-tron in my book and not just a facelift, a worthy competitor in the premium SUV sector and well worth a look at.
It now offers a more competitive range and larger battery packs, and the comfort / technology are up there with the best. Prices starting from £67800 and BIK 2%
A big thank you to Poole Audi, for more info please contact josh.kent@ pooleaudi.co.uk who may have one available for immediate delivery.

Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan: Employer Needs
We have now published a summary of the new evidence and known data highlighting the key skills and workforce issues in each sector of focus. https://dorsetchamber.co.uk/lsip/ priorities/. Further comments are welcome.
We have also highlighted cross sector issues such as a need to grow the workforce, increase work readiness for those not currently in work, improve generic digital skills, and develop Net Zero plans and procedures.
It’s a three-way transformation that is required to ensure Dorset has a larger, better-skilled workforce that will build local economic prosperity and support social cohesion and inclusion.
Employers, training providers and learners all need to evolve their beliefs and behaviours to better align with current work place skills requirements and post-COVID worker expectations.
Employers could be better at transitioning new joiners, providing inclusive work experience for all ages, and understanding the needs of the younger COVID generation.
Education and training providers could work with employers to better understand their fast-moving and changing environment, share expertise and equipment, and develop flexible training solutions.
Learners need to be supported to understand how work works, and how technology and automation is changing skills needs in every sector. Traditional perceptions of farming, construction, and healthcare are still partially relevant, but now success requires data handling, computerised machinery, experience of new greener materials, and task management and reporting via apps and tablets at all levels.
We are now seeking employers who wish to be visible and engaged in a whole system change plan June 2023-March 2025. System leaders of all sizes demonstrating current actions, planned actions or ambitions that will seek to address current and future needs. The aim is to bring employers, training and education providers, and learners of all ages
closer together so more people are employed for longer in valued and rewarding roles that strengthen Dorset’s economy and community.
Employers might:
• offer work placements for FE college teachers, second industry staff to support curriculum design and delivery, and contribute facilities and specialist equipment
• support workforce development through apprenticeships, traineeships, work placements, and supported internships as well as learning and training programmes for upskilling and reskilling existing employees
• better articulate their skills needs and aggregate demand in a way that translates into stronger demand signals for providers
• use apprenticeship levy transfers so large employers make greater use of their levy and for small and medium sized employers to take on apprentices
Please get in touch before May 10 for Phase 1 submission to the Secretary of Sate for Education by May 31. Phase 2 starts June 2023-March 2025 when we will develop and monitor the published actions. Examples of what LSIP success will look like are:
• More employers engaged
• More agile and nimble local skills system
• Roles in the system clearer
• More shared strategic thinking
• More collaborative bids for funding
• Growth in earnings/person
• More skills in sectors that are growing and changing
• More learners
• More suitable and more flexible training opportunities
Its an exciting time to be working in Dorset. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/lsip
