Environmental Responsibility

It’s not about attention-seeking headlines.. it's about safe-guarding your future

We caught up with Dorset-based company, The Southern Sustainability Partnership as they prepare to open The Big Sustainability Expo (Southampton) for the 5th year in October. A free resource, it features practical advice from more than 100 exhibition stands, networking, keynote presentations and workshops. And, co-directors Anita Potten and Lynda Daniels left us in no doubt about the importance of an environmental strategy to protect the future of your business.

Having successfully run a business that supports public and private sector in their quest to operate more responsibly, this duo has witnessed first-hand businesses losing long-term customers by not prioritising the need for an environmental strategy. Anita Potten: We've all fought hard to win a customer and nurtured a culture of outstanding quality and customer service. That, on its own, is no longer enough. With far greater scrutiny of the supply chain, we are urging SME's to ask themselves a question: “does my customer have a strategy to reduce their impact on the environment? We're witnessing a ripple effect through the supply chain, as one company is forced to clean up its act by their customer, they won't jeopardise those efforts by buying from a less responsible supplier themselves.

Far greater scrutiny is being demanded from the supply chain as one company is forced to clean up its act, it won't jeopardise those efforts buying from an irresponsible supplier.”

Lynda Daniels adds: Did you read about the leading sports-related manufacturer that created a running shoe from ocean plastic? What came first in their design strategy do you think. The company or the planet? Undoubtedly, their journey began with a need to meet increasing environmental legislation, and it was from those early directives that corporations woke up to the significant benefits of such strategies. Not least of which the enormous cost savings, and increased profits from a more positive perception of their brand. So, view this as a positive for your business, with far-reaching benefits that are no longer just within the confines of our large corporations.

So, what can your company do to protect itself and enjoy those same benefits? Anita says start by creating more joined-up thinking between your departments and senior management, and shine a spotlight on areas of your business that may have gone unscrutinised for years. This should incorporate what you spend your hard-earned profits on, comparing what comes into your businesses versus what goes out as waste. More centralised purchasing is a great next move, it ensures you are less wasteful and may provide stronger buying power. Track your energy data...what you use and where you use it. There are many ways to reduce energy waste and you may be horrified to learn what you are using when the building is closed.

The duo agrees no company has all the answers, but the answer right now is to begin to adopt your own step-by-step environmental strategy. One that has a well-defined framework and one that your business will hold accountable. This can still be achieved while taking into account the nuances of your industry sector and, very early on, they promise you will view this as less as a burden and more as a smart, effective way to run any business. Reduced costs, streamlined processes, ability to tender for new business, meet existing and new customer expectations and attract the best workforce.

The Big Sustainability Expo opens on October 28 to a UK-wide audience of large corporations and SMEs alike. The message is clear, you can no longer afford to ignore this so educate yourself and your team. Entry is free, as is parking and it’s right on your doorstep. SME’s who don’t put environmental managemEnt on their agenda neEd to ask themselves one question...What are my customer’s doing?
