Worried sick: How to support your team
Few can deny the excellence of the NHS in recent times, but pressures on the service are increasing. According to the British Medical Association, GP surgeries are experiencing significant and growing strain with rising demand and patients having to wait longer for appointments.
This is leading to problems for people when trying to see a doctor or healthcare professional in a timely fashion. With this current concern in mind, Alison Gardiner, a GP at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, urges employers to help. Alison explains why it is important for employers to help and what extra guidance, or support, they can give to employees which will help them gain access to healthcare quickly and easily.
“Your employees are your business, and their health is non-negotiable. Looking after your employees leads to countless benefits, including: • Attendance • Productivity • Increased morale • Reputation • Retention Not least, it improves the happiness and mental health of your employees – the value of which has increased significantly since coming out of the Covid-19 crisis.
“When your team is not in good health, it can have a big impact on your business – the health of your business is dependent on their health. By looking after the health of your employees and helping them to gain quicker access to effective medical care and treatment, your business can benefit in numerous ways and reduce sick days.
“As we come out of the pandemic, people want to ensure they can get prompt access to medical advice and treatment when it’s needed. However, with GP waiting times getting longer, meaning that essential investigations are delayed, this is not ideal. As an employer, you have a real opportunity to demonstrate how much your team is valued and better engage them by either: • investing in their health and wellbeing and refining health and benefits packages, perhaps offering fast and effective private medical, or • directing them to ‘pay-as-you-go’ private healthcare so they can simply, and instantly, pay for the treatment they need. “Directing staff to a private GP service is beneficial for many reasons - rapid access to services, generally seeing patients on the same day; flexibility with appointment times, which include evenings and Saturday mornings; and, longer appointment times to fully discuss an issue and organise further management. At Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, we also have full nursing services available on site which means any nursing procedures such as bloods, ECGs, dressings and suture removal can be organised immediately.
“One of the advantages of being based within the hospital is that our GP team can arrange for investigations such as blood tests or x-rays to be done at the time of consultation, or the following day. We can also ensure rapid referral to any one of the wide range of specialists that consult at the hospital if needed.
“We also offer a wider range of services including travel vaccinations and advice, HPV vaccinations, prescriptions, ear syringing and acupuncture, women’s and men’s health and echocardiograms. People can also access tailor-made health screening, which encompasses full blood tests and provides an early detection of problems, as well as medicals for employment purposes.
“Therefore, while people are concerned and faced with increased waiting times to see their GP, if employers look to provide outstanding health benefits and protection it’s likely they will see a positive impact on their business - a boost in productivity, engagement and loyalty, as well as reducing the risks of costly absenteeism.”
