DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME

Welcome to the November edition of Dorset Business Focus and I hope this finds you safe and well. It’s been a worrying few weeks as we see a significant increase in Covid-19 infection rates across the UK, including here in Dorset. Businesses in many sectors still face huge challenges and for many it’s a fight for survival. There is also an increasing concern that with infections in the BCP area rising, businesses in many sectors will face further restrictions as we are seeing in other parts of the country. People often ask me how businesses are doing and there is no single answer. Businesses owners in some sectors tell me their order books are strong and business is good. However, for many businesses in sectors such as hospitality, events and leisure and manufacturing, the situation is grave. Through our accreditation with the British Chambers of Commerce we continue to lobby Government and last week I was one of many Chamber Chief Executives that put their name to a letter to the Prime Minister asking for increased business support for those most affected, better use of data and improvements in the way Track and Trace is used. We recognise the tightrope the Government is walking and it’s not a case of health versus wealth; the steps the Government take need to be informed and they need to recognise the huge amount of work businesses across the UK have undertaken to protect their employees and customers from Covid.

It goes without saying we need to continue to push the need for individual responsibility. We still see crowds gathering at night in our cities, we all often see many people disregarding the requirements to wear a mask and some continue to completely ignore social distancing. It’s absolutely essential we all do our bit to bring an end to this and we urge the Government not to penalise businesses in the fight against Coronavirus. Finally, I want to remind businesses of the need to now urgently prepare for the end of the Brexit transition period which is now looming. If you are a UK business that exports or imports within the EU, you will need to have Customs Declarations in place to keep goods moving. These are complex by the own admission of Government. Our International Trade team are qualified to help in this area and you’ll see more information on this support including events and courses in the International trade section of the Dorset Chamber website. Keep well and very best wishes Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

If you want to continue trading with the EU, you must do this… If you want to continue trading with the EU, then you must complete export and import declarations from the 1 January 2021. However, imports from the EU will have a phased approach during the first six months of 2021 allowing UK importers to bring in most goods and complete declarations while deferring payment of import duties/VAT. CUSTOMS DECLARATIONS

As the UK has been part of the EU Single Market, there has been 'free' movement of goods between the EU28 members, and those movements were therefore labelled as 'Dispatches' and ‘Arrivals'. However, when we formally leave the single market, UK exports to the EU and imports from the EU to the UK will be considered as third country status and will be subject to customs controls. Regardless of whether we agree a deal with the EU or not, there are certain things we know will change on 1 January 2021, from standing in a different queue at the airport to the reintroduction of customs declarations. These were abolished in 1973 upon joining the European Economic Community (EEC) so it’s a significant change for businesses that import and export. While preparations for Brexit may have taken a back seat to coronavirus over the past few months, with the end of the transition period fast approaching now is the time to start preparing for this new normal. Businesses would benefit from visiting gov.uk/transition where you can answer a few questions to get tailored advice on what you should be considering and how to go about preparing. From here you can also sign up for email alerts to be notified when something that impacts you changes. Individuals can also use this tool.

BUSINESSES THAT IMPORT AND EXPORT CAN START TO PREPARE BY: •

Obtaining an EORI number which takes only 5 – 10 minutes

Considering using a customs intermediary to make customs declarations (we can help with this at Dorset Chamber)

Checking if goods need import/export licences and if so, applying for these

Ensuring understanding of VAT responsibilities and what may need to be paid

Deciding whether to make deferred declarations if importing goods

Part of the Government’s preparations for the end of the transition period includes a £200 million fund for ports to build new border infrastructure facilities 4

You can complete customs declarations yourself via the National Export System or through specialised software connecting your business to CHIEF (Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight), alternatively you can also appoint a third party to do it on your behalf for example a freight forwarder or local Chamber of Commerce. Dorset Chamber is a certified Customs Agent and offers this service as part of its portfolio. As we leave the EU Single Market, the number of customs declarations is expected to significantly rise from about 50 million to 250300 million. Hauliers will be subject to new checks and controls from the start of next year for moving goods from the UK to the EU. As a result of these new customs requirements, the Government has predicted a ‘worst case scenario’ of 7,000 lorries caught in traffic jams in Kent trying to carry goods over the English Channel. While the Government is making investments in terms of infrastructure and skill set across the country, if companies are not taking the proper steps to prepare we’ll see further disruptions to those already expected as a result of the introductions of new processes and IT systems, and even wider economic impact. Part of the Government’s preparations for the end of the transition period includes a £200 million fund for ports to build new border infrastructure facilities so they’re ready to handle new customs requirements under the new Border Operating Model. Funding can be used for a range of vital port infrastructure such as warehouses, control posts or traffic management systems. @DorsetChamber

businesses while offering them access to significant benefits, including our very popular Zoom networking sessions. “All members will have access to our new helplines and legal expenses insurance, giving them invaluable support and peace of mind in the testing times ahead.” Ian added: “We have an incredibly strong and supportive business community in Dorset. “By coming together we can help each other survive and thrive, while supporting the local economy and giving Dorset a powerful voice beyond the county’s borders.” Dorset Chamber’s Business Partners scheme – the top tier of membership – will remain in place. investigations. It forms part of the Chamber’s pledge to ‘protect, promote and connect’ businesses. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

The work of The Dorset Police Rural Crime Team With many businesses based in the more rural parts of Dorset, Chief Inspector Jim Beashel highlights the work of The Dorset Police Rural Crime Team. Established in 2016 the role of the team is to co-ordinate the police response to any crime or incident in a rural area that impacts on any farming, agriculture, wildlife, environment and heritage assets. Nearly half of Dorset's population live in rural areas and we are fortunate to have an abundance of diverse wildlife in the county which can be the subject of poaching and other wildlife crime. The Rural Crime Team consists of an Inspector and Sergeant (also responsible for local policing in West Dorset), two dedicated police officers, a police community support officer and a part time rural crime researcher. The team also includes nominated officers who are points of contact for each of Dorset's five rural sections: Bridport, Dorchester and Sherborne, Purbeck, East Dorset and North Dorset and they work closely with the rural community and partners across Dorset to ensure they are engaged with and protected. As

well as providing specialist advice and training to front line Police officers in relation to Rural, Wildlife & Heritage Crime the team’s aim is to make Rural Dorset a safer and less attractive place for rural offenders. They do this by running regular proactive operations to target those responsible for committing such crimes and bringing them to justice and through the use of criminal behaviour orders and other restrictive legislation. The Rural Crime Team would like to offer a socially distanced visit to your farm, small holding or rural business premises and offer advice on crime prevention. The team can also provide prevention signage and livestock worrying signs. Our Rural Crime Team PCSO has a farming background and understands that crime prevention cannot be like Fort Knox as it has to be practical solutions allowing vital work on the premises to continue. If you would like to arrange a Rural Crime Prevention Security Review please

One thing we urge rural residents and businesses to do is to report suspicious vehicles and persons to Police as this is often the precursor to a theft or crime happening. 8

send the team an email at ruralcrimeteam@ dorset.pnn.police.uk or please call 101 and ask to speak to PCSO 6386 Tom Balchin. A simple step to find out about security advice is by visiting our website: https://www. dorset.police.uk/ruralcrime, we also use our Dorset Alert system to send security advice and information, which will help you to keep your property safe. As a member you will receive information on rural related incidents from across the county of Dorset, so that you can be aware of any suspicious activity that may occur. If you would like to join this system please visit www. dorsetalert.co.uk One thing we urge rural residents and businesses to do is to report suspicious vehicles and persons to Police as this is often the precursor to a theft or crime happening. Rural crime offenders will often scout out possible targets and be less conscious of protecting their identity and vehicle details when doing so. Reporting is a must because unless a crime or suspicious incident is reported and recorded we have no record of it happening and are unable to use what could be vital information in investigations or our patrol-plans. For a crime in progress such as a theft or any other emergency that requires Police then please dial 999. For all non-urgent reporting please, if possible, use our online report process at www.dorset. police.uk/do-it-online/, you can report crime or an incident such as a suspicious vehicle by emailing 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or phone us on 101. @DorsetChamber

Actisense hailed Best Marine Tech Company at South Coast Tech Awards 2020

Poole-based marine electronics specialists, Actisense, were named Best Marine Tech Company at a virtual awards ceremony for the annual South Coast Tech Awards on Wednesday 7th October 2020. Hosted by BBC Click’s Spencer Kelly from a studio in Southampton, these awards celebrate innovators and leaders in technology across multiple sectors. Typically a glitzy awards bash hosted on the South Coast, the ceremony was held online instead due to constrictions caused by the pandemic. The Marine sector is of significant importance to the UK economy, and the Marine Tech Company Award was kindly sponsored by Blake Morgan LLP. Dan Geddes, Partner at the law firm, presented Actisense with the award, citing their impressive technology and innovation, and their adaptability in bringing that technology to other vertical markets. Actisense CEO, Phil Whitehurst, was in the online audience: “Thank you to the judges and organisers! This is a wonderful accolade for our hardworking team. We’ve been active in the marine technology sector for 23 years now, and we are amazed by the constant innovation by the sector as a whole. We are spurred on to create evermore creative solutions for our sector’s biggest electronics challenges. Completed humbled and grateful for this award.” The awards are organised annually by The Business Magazine. With hundreds in the audience, Actisense Marketing Manager, Justin Cohen, commented on the virtual event’s proceedings: “The whole event was very cleverly put together. From virtual “sponsor’s table” Zoom rooms, to interactive chat functionality with other finalists and sponsors, the collective audience felt engaged and the event had no less excitement than a live awards ceremony. Congratulations to the organisers and, of course, to our great host in Spencer Kelly!” www.actisense.com For more about the Awards, visit www.southcoasttechawards.co.uk

The President’s Column

by Liz Willingham

It is with a bit of a heavy heart that I write this; after a busy but immensely enjoyable two years the countdown is on towards the end of my chamber presidency. Next month will see our annual AGM (our first ever in 71 years to be held online which is simply odd) and in traditional form, the event will wrap up my tenure and welcome in my successor. I feel really privileged to have had a second year to grow into the role, as the first year goes in a flash. You’re just getting your teeth into it and it’s over; I know my predecessors found that frustrating, so I was lucky to have the chance to have more time. I have seen some big moments, major highs like the 70th anniversary and some lows too….Brexit I thought was going to be our biggest challenge…..then COVID-19 hit. Oh boy, we didn’t see that coming! I have tried to maintain a consistent, solid support (and positive challenge too) for Ian and the Chamber team. Despite a difficult year so far, I firmly believe Dorset has one of the strongest and most proactive chambers in the network and my past year of sitting on the British Chamber of Commerce board, and as Chair of its Accreditation Committee, I can validate that from a position of knowledge. We are by no way a big chamber – areas like Manchester dwarf us of course – but for the trackable good we do for our members, the positive team spirit we generate and the hands on support and services we provide, Dorset Chamber definitely punches above its weight. We have been more profitable in the past few years than certainly in my memory, thanks to the steady hand of our trusted and dynamic CEO and the robust finance team, previously Carmel and now Theresa with support of Treasurer, James Robinson and Steve Mills before him. It has been fantastic to work with a dedicated team, who genuinely put our members front and centre. They are so focused on doing the right thing, always considering what else can be done for them and making sure opportunities are fresh and relevant. This year has been a test for everyone, and no less for Dorset Chamber which, as a membership organisation, relies on the good fortunes of businesses around them to succeed. I believe they have been as proactive as they could have been, responding quickly to provide insight and advice surrounding the government support schemes and the wider implications of how COVID-19 may affect us. Their focus was businesses – not just member’s businesses – as the team’s drive to protect our local economy goes way beyond their immediate responsibility. They would honestly fight to the last for us all with grit and determination. It is exciting to see business partners’ commitment return for another year despite difficult trading conditions and our key stakeholders, the local authorities and the Dorset LEP, entrusting us to deliver critical support programmes such as the Gateway project and the Kickstart Scheme on their behalf. It is all testament to the profile and authoritative position Dorset Chamber has gained throughout this crisis. In good times and bad, we can safely say we have your back and give the voice of business serious volume.

Now with the new levels of membership, including a new entry level digital tier, even the smallest business in Dorset can justify getting on board whilst the big boys, like Sunseeker and JP Morgan, remain happily in the field alongside them. Those who have listened to my speeches or have read my articles will know wellbeing in the workplace is a consistently hot topic for me. I am proud to say that we have started strategic conversations about a Chamber programme which I will see over the line before I hand over and stay involved with as I continue my time as board member. It aims to support on two levels; the workforce, and business leaders themselves. As we deal with one of the most difficult winters we are going to face in our memory, the time is right, and the need is critical. I can’t wait to tell you all about it fully in the next issue. We would welcome anyone who is interested to get involved; with trusted organisations such as Ouch Training, Dorset MIND and LiveWell Dorset working with us, I believe it is going to plug a much needed gap of support for the mental health of those running and working in our businesses. Watch this space! I look forward to seeing you on a Zoom event soon….and as always do reach out to me either on LinkedIn or email liz.willingham@lizleanpr.co.uk. Stay safe and well, Liz 11

The expanding firm has, once again, been awarded the highest possible ‘Top Tier’ ranking by the independent directory in its key legal areas of Company and Commercial, Commercial Property and Dispute Resolution. In a change, this year saw the Legal 500 significantly expand the geographical area in which Steele Raymond was ranked by not only covering Dorset but also including all law firms in Devon and Cornwall. The guide also provided outstanding comments and recommended lawyers in six other legal disciplines including Employment, Family, Private Client, Education, Property Litigation and Contentious Trusts and Probate. Additionally, the firm’s Family team have maintained their annual ranking in the second tier across the South West region. expanded significantly to cover not only Dorset, but also the counties of Devon and Cornwall bringing us up against some major national law firms. “The Legal 500 is one of the leading independent guides to the UK legal profession. It’s a very good test for us, particularly as we are ranked alongside a number of large national firms. This latest set of rankings is a significant highlight because the rankings for the firm are based on the quality of our work, a rigorous interview process and of course, most importantly, feedback from our valued clients. Ultimately the results are for our clients – without them we don’t even get past first base! “As a firm we continue to evolve and grow in a very turbulent economic environment. Poole Charity Thanks Staff for Hard Work During Pandemic Local Poole based charity Prama are thanking their staff for hard work during the Coronavirus pandemic, which continues to put a strain on the care industry. Over the past six months, Prama’s care support workers have continued to care for those classed as most vulnerable, providing the same level of care and support as they did before the pandemic, with a smile on their faces, never faltering in their ability to provide compassion for those in their care. Prama have managed to continue offering their care services throughout, whilst their PramaLife team have adapted to offer support and activities online and over the phone, since temporarily closing their community groups during lockdown earlier in the year. PramaLife have managed to provide 1211 hours of phone support to those who required 20

area beginning to open up again, it is brilliant to see old and new customers returning and showing their support. Speaking of the charity’s work during the pandemic, Prama’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Robinson, said: “It is undeniable that the current pandemic has had a direct impact, however we are proud to have had a zero infection rate and are so grateful to our staff who have continued to work hard to provide their usual high standard of care and support throughout these

Business as usual for bus travel in Dorset following government three-tier announcement Following the government’s announcement on a new three-tier system to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, Morebus has moved to reassure passengers that it is ‘business as usual’ in Bournemouth and Poole. The local operator has worked hard to reintroduce its full service timetable over recent months, with a host of safety measures in place. “Many local people have emerged from hibernation, after what has been an incredibly challenging year,” said Morebus managing director, Andrew Wickham. “And we are delighted to learn that this will still be the case, with our area designated as the lowest tier (tier one). And, we have special measures in place to ensure travelling on public transport is one of the safest places to be.” Several recent international studies suggest the risk of coronavirus spreading on public transport has remained substantially low through the pandemic - due to safety measures introduced. 22

October 2020 | Dorset Business Focus

“I am not surprised by this because our team has worked tirelessly to ensure the buses across our fleet are clean and hygienic,” added Andrew. “We have stringent regimes in place including extra focus on touch touch-points with anti-viral wipes. Our passengers must wear face coverings, unless exempt, and we have also given our operation the ‘belt and braces’ treatment, by also adding hand sanitisers. “It’s about ensuring people know they can travel on our buses with confidence and, with demand for our services rising, we are pleased with the response we are seeing here. “We will of course continue to monitor the situation and, if the government guidelines for our area does change, we will act accordingly.” There is extra reason for people to travel by bus. Morebus’ parent company, Go-Ahead Group, has carried out into active travel - with a view to improving well-being and overall health. And the results show that even walking to the bus stop can be beneficial. /company/dorset-chamber/

/dorsetchamber

#GetBusinessDone

“Active travel means making journeys more physically active, like walking to the shops, walking the kids to school, walking to the bus stop or cycling to work,” said Andrew. “The research found one particular group, ‘the unaware walkers’ engage in active travel without even realising. Walking at their own pace, in their work attire to-and-from their bus stops. They are unaware of the health benefits their walk offers. A few tweaks, like changing into trainers for the walk, could unlock greater physical and mental wellbeing. “On top of all that, having fewer cars on the road has the potential to be a major force in combating the declining air quality and climate change - two of the biggest challenges of our time.”

The Poole Harbour Boat Show to take a year out Next year’s Poole Harbour Boat Show has been cancelled due to the ongoing uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. The Poole Harbour Boat Show is the largest, FREE to attend boat show in the UK, attracting over 32,000 visitors each year. After cancelling the 2020 show which was due to take place in June, event organisers Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) have confirmed that the show will not go ahead in 2021 either, but that they hope to see it return in 2022. Covid-19 has had a profound effect on almost every industry it has touched and has seen live events disappear almost overnight in the wake of the pandemic. “The Boat Show has been a huge 26

success over the past five years and the decision to cancel for 2021 has not been taken lightly. However, pressure on business resources across the marine industry and beyond is high, making planning for the future very difficult.” said Jim Stewart, CEO of PHC. The show is not a money-making exercise for PHC, it is an event that was developed to give something back to not only the local but also the wider marine community. With the ongoing uncertainty and impact of the virus continuing to remain unknown, PHC needs to refocus their resources on their core business objectives. Jim continued “At this uncertain time, it is prudent that as a business we focus on our key Harbour and

Port roles and responsibilities. Unfortunately, for now, that comes at the cost of the Boat Show. I am confident that by making this difficult decision now, we will be better placed to move forward and face the challenges that lie ahead. /dorsetchamber

Dorset Chamber Simply Networking: A Success Story When Amanda Reuben of Bijou Recruitment happened to mention in a Chamber Simply Networking event that she was a recent arrival to Westbourne, little did she know that this would lead to a friendship and now an online course that gives job seekers the inside track on today’s job hunting process. In the same breakout room happened to be Shirley Hensher, the Change Agent, a career and business coach who is also a recent arrival to Westbourne. Shirley said “it was great to discover a Chamber member living so close to me. I was keen to meet Amanda, compare our experiences of re-establishing our businesses in a new location and see if we could support each other. We had a socially distanced coffee on the beach, just minutes from where we live and hit it off immediately”. That first conversation led to Amanda referring a client to 32

Shirley who was looking for career direction and practical C.V. help. Amanda says “we have very similar values and sense of humour and it turned out that we’d both worked in Dickins and Jones way back in the 80’s.” A few coffee meetings later and they decided to put their heads together and created a course which combines Amanda’s recruitment experience with Shirley’s work helping clients find career direction. “More and more people are finding themselves job hunting, many for the first time in years. Amanda’s perspective is vital” says Shirley. “If job hunters don’t understand how to work with recruiters (be they specialists like Amanda, internal functions or agencies) and how small errors in approach can have a big impact, they will waste precious time. Their applications may never see the light of day leading to frustration and

diminishing confidence”. “I can tell participants what to do but it has far more impact coming from Amanda; insight rarely offered on standard courses.” “Our online course will take professionals through all the practical considerations of finding a job in this challenging market; from building relationships online and with recruiters, the do’s and don’ts of writing a C.V. and covering letter,

and creating a personal brand” says Amanda. “We are firm advocates of networking in the job-hunting process. After all, we are proof that you just never know where those initial contacts might lead so long as you take the time to follow up and stay in touch.” www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fivesteps-to-finding-your-next-jobtickets-125431166997

Happy Ever After as Chris stars in Lighthouse Christmas show special CBeebies favourite Chris Jarvis is to direct and star in Happy Ever After, a very special show for Christmas at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, this December. He’s promising an hour-long extravaganza of music and song with loads of laughter and bags of festive fun – a Christmas treat for the whole family. The show, which has also been written by Chris, features a host of familiar friends from the world of pantomime and a story in which we find out what happens to them after their panto story ends. Will Cinders get to her next ball? Will Humpty Dumpty pull himself together again? Can they all live happily ever after? “This is Christmas at Lighthouse with just a smidgen of pantomime,” says Chris. “We are acutely aware that people have had a rotten year and that coming back to a theatre to shout and scream and boo and hiss and have things thrown around might not be what they need at this time. But we want people to come and be relaxed and comfortable enough to enjoy themselves so although there’s no baddy and we’re not throwing things into the audience, we have lots of characters that everyone knows from panto like Cinderella, Jack, Genie, Fairy Godmother and I’ll be dressed as Buttons and tell the story of what happens to those characters after their panto story. Do they live happy ever after?” The show features a medley of Christmas songs and a full cast of talented singers and dancers, as well as the magical special effects created by lighting designer James Smith. “The story is told with the same texture as panto with comedy and songs, but the magic comes from the phenomenal skills of James Smith – he’s a genius who can make things happen with lights that don’t seem possible.” Chief Executive Elspeth McBain adds: “We know how much our audiences love coming to Lighthouse all year round and especially at Christmas so we wanted to put on a special show and make it accessible to as much of the community as possible. Not only does this mean we can all come back together and have a great time at Christmas, but it gives our wonderful audiences a chance to support Lighthouse by buying a ticket for a great show that has been made entirely in Poole.” Happy Ever After will open on Friday 18 December and run until Sunday 3 January with three shows a day most days. No shows on 21 December, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Happy Ever After went on sale to Lighthouse Friends on Wednesday 14 October and on General Sale on Friday 16 October. For details of Lighthouse Friends visit www.lighthousepoole.co.uk/support-lighthouse/.

All-new Audi Q5 Sportback: aesthetic appeal of a coupé and versatility of an SUV All-new Q5 Sportback will arrive in the first half of 2021 in the UK, to join its sibling Q5 SUV. The midsized Audi Q model undergoes the Sportback treatment: the aesthetic appeal of a coupé with the accommodating versatility of an SUV. The new model will appeal to customers who appreciate the innately family-friendly utility and sophisticated technology of the standard Q5, but also admire the expressive and distinctive design of more purebred sports cars. The range will include TDI, TFSI, plug-in hybrid TFSI e and SQ5 variants. The Sport, S line, Vorsprung and Edition One specification options will be available at launch in the UK. The digital cabin with touch-screen MMI, MMI navigation and Audi Virtual cockpit come as standard. The new Q5 Sportback’s rear lights have the new digital OLED technology for Vorsprung trims. At 4.69 metres in length, the Q5 Sportback is seven millimetres longer than its sister model. Its height and width are identical, but its coefficient of drag is lower at 0.30. The long wheelbase of 2.82 metres facilitates ample room for five in the cabin, the focal point of which is the cleanly styled two-section dashboard with its freestanding 10.1-inch MMI display. The state-of-the-art technological sophistication of the new Q5 Sportback is underscored further in Vorsprung versions by rear lights featuring innovative digital OLED technology. The units each incorporate three organic light-emitting diodes, each of which is divided into six segments that can be controlled individually and configured differently. Customers can choose from three different rear light signatures at the point of order, all of which include a dynamic coming-and-leaving-home lighting sequence and an additional safety feature - if another vehicle approaches from the rear to within two metres of the stationary Q5 Sportback, all OLED segments illuminate as a proximity warning. As in the recently updated Q5 SUV, incorporation of the third generation modular infotainment system or MIB 3 has rendered the rotary MMI control dial obsolete and enabled the introduction of full touch-screen functionality for the monitor, as well as a greatly enhanced natural language voice control system. This latest system is able to access information from the cloud to inform its responses, and can be activated by either pressing a button on the steering wheel or by saying ‘Hey Audi’. The Q5 Sportback is set to launch in the UK with two powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines – a TDI and a TFSI – each with 204PS and therefore identifiable by 40 TDI and 40 TFSI designations. The potent SQ5 Sportback with its 347PS twin-turbo V6 TDI will also form part of the first wave. Plug-in hybrid TFSIe variants with a choice of two outputs will follow on a later date. The four-cylinder engines are combined with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, while the V6 TDI in the SQ5 Sportback works with an eight-speed tiptronic. All versions are shored up by quattro all-wheel-drive, with some featuring an on demand system that can disengage the rear axle in everyday driving conditions for maximum efficiency, and reconnect it predictively within fractions of a second when required. Cash Support for Businesses

Calling all innovative businesses:

credits scheme, which has granted relief of £26.9bn in tax relief since the scheme began and is much broader in scope than many are aware. The scheme is most popular for an annual cashback, even when a business has been in loss and non-tax paying. A business that incurred costs for unique innovation activities, may be entitled to up to 33% of those costs as a cashback. The average SME tax credit is £53k for one year, often in the form of a cash injection straight to the bottom line, and potentially double that amount for a first time claimant. It could be a lifeline for businesses; it has helped many fund their payroll or other key costs over the years. There is no dictate as to how cash received from the scheme is used and cash benefits are often paid as quickly as one month after a claim is filed. Some businesses have claimed small amounts via a DIY claim or a

claim compiled by their accountant, however, there is almost always additional cash benefit available, based on a technical appraisal of the innovation activities. Now may be the best time ever to check whether the business has been receiving the full entitlement. For a business that has already received benefit, it can pay to have a further review as the amount is often much less than they were entitled to, without them realising it. This invariably happens when businesses believe this claim opportunity is an accountancy workstream, whereas it is really about technology. A remote technical appraisal is available during pandemic restrictions, to check eligibility for any registered trading company that has been established for over one year. For more information visit www.businesscashenabler.co.uk

Improve cashflow with government support. Claim back up to 33% of costs incurred on innovation over the past two years. With uncertainty over revenues and a looming cash flow crisis for many businesses, there may be a welcome cash injection awaiting for businesses in any sector that have been innovating in the past two years. Many businesses are clearly concerned about the impact the pandemic will have on the future of

their business. What they may not realise, is that regardless of their current trading situation, they may be able to claim back a percentage of costs incurred over the past two accounting periods, normally the prior 2 years. Help may be available via HMRC’s Research & Development (R&D) tax

YMCA's BIG Sleep Easy 2020 raises over £12k Dorset Businesses gave up their beds in exchange for cardboard boxes in YMCA’s BIG Sleep Easy event. A Poignant fundraiser, as almost 45 business people, including two Christchurch Councillors, gave up their beds in exchange for a cardboard box on Saturday 17th October as part of YMCA Bournemouth’s BIG Sleep Easy challenge. Now in its 3rd year, this year moved from its usual site, Chapelgate Sports club due to COVID-19 restrictions. There were interesting moments as the events manager, Sheena Dayman, visited INSPIRE and St James Studio, at a New Forest Camp site, then Councillors Michael and Sue who were sleeping under the Christchurch Town Hall, in cardboard boxes. Then the news that a YMCA resident had died earlier in the evening made it very real. In these difficult times YMCA Bournemouth are amazed to have raised over £12K with money still coming in. Unfortunately, like COVID-19 homelessness is not easily going away. But together we can make a difference. Sponsors were Domino’s pizza, Preston Redman, hand warmers by Thermopacks, Face Masks from Adwear and Team Jobs. Boxes sponsored by Lester Aldridge Solicitors and stored

Dorset Gateway increases support for region’s exporters Identifying and entering new international markets to ensure future growth is a prime opportunity for Dorset’s businesses as EU transition arrangements come to an end on 31 December, and businesses currently importing and exporting goods need to take action now to ensure they can continue to trade from 1 January. Dorset Gateway, Dorset LEP’s growth hub delivered in partnership with Dorset Chamber, is increasing the support currently offered to Dorset’s businesses to help them prepare for these changes. In addition to the information, advice and signposting already on offer, the increased support includes access to a specialist adviser to help businesses understand, navigate and answer questions. This also builds on the international trade support already provided by Dorset Chamber. A fully-funded customs declaration support service is now also available to support up to 200 businesses. This service is available to those currently exporting so they can continue to do so after the transition period is over. Additionally, Dorset Gateway aims to support at least 40 businesses looking to become first-time exporters. 40

November 2020 | Dorset Business Focus

The service will also include the promotion of international trade as a route to business growth including regular content on: • Why businesses should consider exporting • How to begin the export journey • Support and help available • How to access new markets This information is already extensively promoted by Dorset Chamber through editorials, events and social media messaging. What’s changing for businesses? From 1 January 2021, there will be border procedures for importing and exporting goods to and from the EU. Traders importing standard goods, covering everything from clothes to electronics, will need to prepare for new customs paperwork. The new regulations are complex and businesses will need specialist advice and support in addition to the Customs Declaration itself. Ian Girling, Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber said: “Dorset Chamber has significant experience in export documentation, helping Dorset’s businesses export over £250 million of goods each year and as an accredited Chamber of Commerce, we are qualified to deliver a /company/dorset-chamber/

documentation service on behalf of HMRC. This enhanced support through Dorset Gateway will help new businesses begin exporting and create new export opportunities for Dorset.” Finn Morgan, Business Engagement and Dorset Gateway Manager added: “It has been an extremely challenging 12 months for businesses with uncertainly around the EU negotiations and the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new service, coupled with Dorset Chamber’s extensive experience of helping businesses with international trade enquiries, will provide some much needed stimulus and additional support for ambitious, growth-minded businesses in Dorset.” To find out more about the service and how to apply for support, visit Dorset LEP’s website: www.dorsetlep.co.uk/transition-period

World Mental Health Day 2020: keeping the conversation going It was great to see so many members supporting World Mental Health Day on October 10. The World Health Organisation celebrates it on this day every year but hands up who really knew that until this year? For many of us this has really been the first year that it has come into sharp focus, which is a reflection of the times we live in. The good news is that help is at hand. This year’s theme ‘Mental Health for All’ was set by the World Federation for Mental Health. It campaigns globally for greater investment and greater access to mental health support for everyone, everywhere (see https://tinyurl.com/ WorldFedforMentalHealth). Closer to home, Chamber members Ouch

Training Team Ltd (Ouch TT) and charity Dorset Mind marked World Mental Health Day with proactive tools for everyone: Ouch TT has created 5 thought provoking posters for the workplace which are free to download at https://tinyurl.com/OuchTTposters. It also provides mental health first aid training courses alongside other health and wellbeing courses, including stress awareness and management, mindset and resilience training and a Bespoke Workplace Wellbeing Audit. Course details: https://tinyurl.com/ OuchTTtraining

We’ll also be launching a new initiative to help employers support their employees’ mental health AND be aware of their own... Let’s keep this conversation going. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Dorset Mind has created a five step Crisis Plan so people know the main steps they should take if they reach crisis point by feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope. It’s surprising the number of people who have felt the same at one point or another. It’s our view that everyone should read the Plan so they can spot the signs in themselves, family members, friends or colleagues and importantly, know exactly what action to get help and support: https://tinyurl. com/DorsetMind5StepCrisisPlan We'll also be launching a new initiative to help employers support their employees' mental health AND be aware of their own! The workplace was a stressful environment for many before the pandemic; it is critical now that we observe and listen to those who may be vulnerable. We care about our membership and want to help businesses navigate their way for future success so watch this space for updates. Let’s keep this conversation going. 43

Houseparty – should I stay, or should I go now?

Delete the account, not just the app. What’s the benefit of deleting your Houseparty – or any other unsued – account, rather than just uninstalling the app? Jake Moore from ESET UK When the coronavirus pandemic began, people took to Houseparty in their millions. Many of us weren’t allowed to meet anyone in person, so videocalling became an even bigger success and Houseparty was the front runner. Between March and April 2020, Houseparty reported 50 million sign-ups. For comparison, the app was downloaded 533,000 times in February 2020. Houseparty was in the press for all sorts of reasons, including some rather negative slants from rumours that some accounts had been hacked. However, this was never proven and is thought to be a smear campaign. Nonetheless, the app was definitely a hit with the younger generations for keeping in touch with their friends, and remained a top 10 app during the early part of lockdown. Moving on a few months, and as we start to ease back into our normal routines as safely as we can, we now have the option ofseeing a small number of people again. It is therefore likely that Houseparty “rooms” aren’t being attended in the same numbers they once were. Like many unused apps on people’s phones, I assume many people left Houseparty idle on their devices rather than deleting it and even fewer probably deleted their accounts. “But what’s the benefit of deleting an account rather than just removing the app?” you may ask. Houseparty, and many other apps, collect basic registration details like name, email address, birthday, phone number, address, username and password when you create an account. They even have the ability to collect location information from your IP address and some apps may share all of this information with third parties too.

retaining deleted direct messages for years, as well as data sent to and from accounts that had been deactivated and suspended. I decided to reach out to Houseparty and I asked them what the best way is to delete my data from their servers and their response was speedy and helpful. Generally, account deletion is the only way to remove data from our systems. Kindly note that any related personal identifying information will be removed once you have processed the account deletion. When you delete your Houseparty account, you are restricting the use of your data and withdrawing consent to being tracked. However, the bigger worry for me is if you don’t delete your account and then one day the company is hit with a data breach, you could see all your information being sold on the dark web. Criminals will never stop attacking servers and if your data is among that stolen, it could be used against you. Should any of our readers be old enough to remember Myspace, there is a fair chance they would have owned an account. In 2005 it was the coolest network going and arguably one of the earliest, widely popular social media sites. It was a great place to find friends, bands and banter. But when Facebook and other sites came along and dominated, I wonder how many users deleted their accounts or unconsciously chose to just never log in again. In 2016, login credentials and related data of 427 million Myspace accounts were put up for sale on the dark web, and it’s my hunch that not all of those accounts were active users. This stolen data included passwords,

so anyone reusing passwords could have lost access to other accounts as well. If people leave their accounts open and idle, they are potentially leaving themselves open to future attacks. My advice is to only ever enter personal data if you absolutely must and use a VPN where possible for apps that use or even on-sell your information. In the UK, GDPR laws prohibit the selling of personally identifiable information to third parties without consent, but of course this all goes out the window when a threat actor steals the data in a breach as they don’t have the same set of morals. While you still have the chance, it’s far safer not to be on a “breached list” in the first place, but many will say that once your data is on the internet it’s there forever. However, it may be worth going through your phone, opening up those idle apps one last time and deleting the account, rather than just deleting the app and forgetting about the account. The information that lives on may not feel like it is worth anything to anyone else, but it could be used nefariously when pieced together with other information on you and can have damaging effects if used in conjunction with identity theft or bank fraud. So, should you now want to delete Houseparty, simply head to the app, hit the settings button and head to the “Privacy” tab which will give you the option to delete your account after multiple attempts to try to keep you to stay. Whilst you’re at it, make sure you do a similar operation for any other unused apps on your devices too! www.eset.com

#GetBusinessDone

What happens when you delete your Houseparty account? When we delete a social media or other online service account, most of us probably assume that the service operator will wipe all of our personal information from their systems. Our data cannot be used for any further use such as marketing, which is a win for privacy and a loss for mass data collection. However, in my research I found that not all apps have been playing by the “rules” of information deletion – even when they said they did. Security researcher Saugat Pokharel was awarded a $6,000 bug bounty pay-out after he discovered Instagram retained photos and private direct messages on its servers long after he thought he had deleted them. And Instagram isn’t the only big name in recent years to fall foul of this misdemeanour. Last year, security researcher Karan Saini found that Twitter was 44

Together We Can welfare checks get underway to support local residents

Legal 500 success for Ellis Jones Solicitors Dorset law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors is celebrating after gaining recognition for its excellence in the newly published Legal 500 guide.

Local residents who have been notified to selfisolate by NHS Test and Trace will receive a welfare call from BCP Council’s Together We Can (TWC) team with offer of support and advice. As the country enters a second wave of increased numbers of confirmed cases of Covid-19, the council will be calling local residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole soon after they’ve been notified by Test and Trace to self-isolate to ensure they have the support in place in order to self-isolate successfully. Councillor Nicola Greene, Portfolio Holder for Covid Resilience, Public Health and Education, BCP Council said: “It’s really important that residents self-isolate if they are notified by the Test and Trace service to prevent the spread of the virus in the community and to keep themselves safe. We understand that selfisolating may be difficult for some of our residents and so our Together We Can team will be on hand to carry out a welfare check over the phone to ensure they have the support in place.” Sam Crowe, Director of Public Health for Dorset and BCP Councils said: “You may be told by NHS Test and Trace to self-isolate or develop COVID-19 symptoms and have to self-isolate. Self-isolation means just that. You cannot leave your home unless you are taking yourself to have a COVID-19 test. This means not going to the shops or going out for exercise. “I would encourage residents to have a plan in place in case you need to selfisolate. Talk to your friends and family to ask if they can deliver food and medicines to you. If you do not have a network of

people you can rely on, then the BCP Council Together We Can helpline is here for residents that need support.” The Together We Can team will assess a resident’s individual support needs. If a resident is vulnerable and doesn’t have friends, family or neighbours nearby who can help to access food and prescriptions, then support can be offered through the successful volunteer scheme to provide help. Referrals can also be made to access priority supermarket delivery slots and if on a low income, advice will be given about accessing the new Test and Trace benefit payment. The NHS Test and Trace service works in two ways, firstly, notifying a resident that they have had a confirmed test for coronavirus and advising on the their requirement to isolate and secondly, to contact those who have been in close contact with the confirmed case and inform them of the need to self-isolate. You can call the Together We Can helpline on 0300 123 7052. The helpline is available 9-5 Monday to Friday and is for anyone who needs support and doesn’t have friends or family to support them. Together We Can supports BCP Council’s Connected Communities priority by empowering our communities so everyone feels safe, engaged and included. www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk

Save Our Teachers! A recent UK survey showed that 40% of teachers plan to leave the profession within the next 5 years. That was before lockdown happened! Recent months have demonstrated to many just how significant a role teachers play in the infrastructure of an entire economy, but more importantly how important they are to our children’s development, wellbeing and future hopes. The exams fiasco in the summer demonstrated a lamentable distrust in our teachers by government. Regrettably this is not a new thing. On-going results-foccussed pressure, top down leadership and excessive, ever-changing directives have, for thousands of teachers, utterly destroyed their love of teaching and led to mental and physical health breakdowns on a level unseen before. Teachers are leaving schools in unprecedented numbers. In 2016 Chamber member Peter Radford became one of those casualties, suffering a breakdown after 20 years in education, nine of those in leadership. But Peter believes that this current exodus is reversible! Having started his own educational business, Beyond This providing student workshops and staff training, Peter’s first book Love Teaching Keep Teaching – An essential guide to improving well-being at all levels of school – hits the book shelves this month, published by Crown House Publishers.

“We need to radically re-think the way we do school,” says Peter. “We can’t address wellbeing by shoe-horning into the curriculum some extra lessons on mental health for students. We need to address it at a whole school level. We need, as teachers, to learn how to model sustainable, balanced lives so that we can enable our young people to do the same.” The mental health crisis amongst young people is growing. No generation before this one has had 24/7 direct access via their phones to gambling, gaming, porn, friends, enemies, fake news and advertising. We have not equipped students for this world. We aren’t equipped for it ourselves. But… “Education has to be the answer,” says Peter. “Re-thinking not only our curriculum but also the culture of our schools, is now essential. Valuing and acknowledging every student and staff member and placing the wellbeing of each one at the centre of everything we do is the starting point to re-create schools that do what they are supposed to: namely prepare our kids to live life well and build a better future.” Love Teaching Keep Teaching provides practical insights and guidance to teachers on

how to manage their own mental and emotional wellbeing as well as offering guidance on becoming more emotionally literate leaders who can shape an inspiring future. Know a teacher who is worn-out and demoralised? Get them an early stocking-filler and spread some hope! Is this the end of commercial cinema? Record number of promotions at Saffery Champness Chartered Accountants in Bournemouth Saffery Champness Chartered Accounts in Bournemouth has promoted a record number of staff in their Bournemouth office. Nick Fernyhough, Senior Partner ad Head of Office said, “We are delighted to announce the promotion of these talented individuals who have all gone above and beyond to deliver great client service throughout their time at Safferys, but in particular over the last 6 months. “Whilst the economic climate is incredibly challenging we are pleased that we are able to continue our investment in our team and this comes fresh off the back of a record intake of trainees to the Bournemouth office in September. “The next 12 months will continue to be challenging for everyone but we are pleased to be able to continue to support our clients with a top team of committed individuals.”

One of the most stark and extreme effects seen on any industry during the recent pandemic, has been that on the Hollywood film industry. Of course every studio, whether TV, film or otherwise will have closed down and seen at least some impact, but if you’re in the business of making multi-million pound blockbuster movies destined for the local cineplex, this impact is huge. Have we seen the end of the traditional trip to the cinema? With Universal Studios taking the plunge by streaming their ‘Trolls’ sequel direct to our homes, the genie was certainly out of the box. Even more so with the move netting them a cool £80million in the first few weeks! Universal has since released statements with a tone that suggests this could be the new way to get their content to us, rather than the traditional commercial Cinema route, this is indeed ominous news for Cine World and their like. In tandem with this, we have seen a significant uptick in-interest for our Home Cinema service since gradually returning to work in August/ September. We believe this is at least in part due to our clients deciding to invest more in their homes in-general, not just with home cinema of course, but in their gardens, living rooms, anywhere that makes our homes more comfortable to be in. We’ve all spent so much more time at home over the recent months, more than ever before in most cases, so we’ve had lots of time to make plans. We’re really excited to see so many film enthusiasts making the move, taking advantage of 4K projection, Dolby Atmos ‘3D’ surround sound and much more. Their has never been such an exciting time to operate in the Home Cinema industry, home cinema has truly come of age. What does this mean for commercial cinema? Our hope is there will be a new balance struck between streaming new releases and watching them at the local cinema complex. After all, part of the experience is the going, the grabbing of popcorn and a beer and enjoying the movie with fellow movie goers, we really are a social animal when all is said and done (where else would we go for a first date as a teenager?). So when this new balance is struck, we hope you’ll have a Living cinema in your home, it’s an investment that will keep on paying you back, day after day, year after year. Our Home Cinema service is unique. With our design service, we are able to site a cinema experience in any space you have, without pulling your home apart in the process! Over the last 15 years we have transformed living rooms, bedrooms, garages, studios, loft spaces and garden rooms into a Home Cinema. We have packages to meet most budgets and even offer finance options to spread the cost. It really is time to get that quality time with family and friends, in the comfort of your own home. www.livinghometech.co.uk

Buy a Hedgehog box – change a life! It’s not often that buying a simple gift like a hand-made wooden hedgehog box, can help to transform a life. But that’s what is on offer at the new Doorstop Shop, which is selling a range of goods made by ex-rough sleepers in the carpentry workshop run by local charity, Faithworks. One of the “trainees” who has been busy creating the hedgehog boxes said: “I love being down at the workshop – it gives me purpose in my day. I can now see a way forward that will not only help me put these new carpentry skills into practice, but also get some help in other areas of my life, like helping me to organise some driving lessons. That way I really believe I can get restart my relationship with my son, and leave my old way of life on the street behind”. The shop opened on Saturday at its base at the back of St Johns church, Surrey Road – local vicar and Faithworks trustee, Rev Sarah Yetman, cut the ribbon to formally open the shop reminding people that this was also an e-shop, with all the wooden items (plus other donated

goods) available on line as well. “This is such a great initiative – I love seeing the guys literally grow in Hope and self-esteem as they see that people actually want to buy what they made.” David Chidwick, Faithworks homelessness projects manager said: “This year has seen so many people who were living on the street get into temporary accommodation, which is great. But with teams from the local churches, we at Faithworks, wanted to start offering them a chance to use and develop their skills and get away from the boredom that can so easily overwhelm. Having this e-shop now means we

can start showing their talents to the world!” The shop will be open at St Johns each Saturday morning. And the on-line version with its range of planters, bird boxes, wooden Christmas trees as well as those hedgehog boxes can be found at www.bcars.org.uk/ doorstop-shop. Faithworks is one of the members of the Homelessness Partnership across BCP, working in tandem with others from every sector to help everyone find a safe place they can call home. www.faithworkswessex.org.uk

Chamber Networking Events Bringing Real Results to Dorset Firms Creating opportunities for members to network has always been a key Dorset Chamber activity, so we were pleased to hear that the introduction of members Dorset Business Mentors and Solweb has proven productive. Dorset Business Mentors is a well-respected local programme which links Dorset’s business owners with executive-level business mentors. This programme is unmatched in the rest of the country and a tremendous asset to the area, fielding a wealth of talented individuals who volunteer their time to support the advancement of local businesses. The programme selects, trains and supports their mentors to ensure local businesses receive first-rate support. The programme has now linked over 2000 Dorset businesses with mentors across all sectors and has experienced a minimum 20% increase in requests for mentors year after year, testament indeed to the value of the service. In 2019 as part of routine business planning, Dorset Business Mentors identified a new CRM (customer relationship management system) as a key area for investment. With more than 135 active mentors and more than 200 active relationships, effective information management underpins the whole service, in particular driving the process that matches businesses and mentors. There was a limited budget for the project, so initial research focused on off-the-peg solutions, 50

such as HubSpot and Zoho. However, none of these were effective in meeting the needs of such a singular programme. It was during this period that Joint Programme Manager Alistair Bayliss met Rob Tanner of Solweb at a Chamber networking event. Alistair told us, 'At the beginning of the procurement, I spoke to a several firms about developing a bespoke system for us, one of whom actually laughed in my face when I explained the budget and what I needed. It felt like we'd find what we needed in the no-cost/low-cost area of the market – however, that cost me a lot of time refining data, loading it into different CRMs and trying to get them to behave as I wanted. Rob and Solweb were different though. They were the first company who explained it was possible and they worked really hard to understand what we're about, how we operate, and how we might develop. They really bought into what we do. Any project like this is bound to bring compromises, but the development process has really been a dialogue, with a commitment on their side to try and find a way, and one on our side to be realistic! The upshot is a system built around our unique way of working, and with no significant sacrifices made in getting there. We're really pleased with the new system and are delighted with our mutual achievement. ' Rob Tanner, Commercial Manager at Solweb Ltd said; /company/dorset-chamber/

'We have really enjoyed working with Alistair and the team at Dorset Business Mentors to create a bespoke CRM system that addresses all their working practices and processes. They provide a first-class service to the business community and needed a first class CRM system to help facilitate that, which we were happy to provide. We are looking forward to a long, successful working relationship.' The investment in this new CRM is now enabling the Dorset Business Mentors team to be ever more effective as they serve, an everincreasing number of requests for mentors from the local business community. DRIVEN BY STEVE Steve Bulley Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic

The new all-electric ID.3 from Volkswagen is certified net carbon neutral, the first time in the company’s history. We know this is a green car, but is it desirable to a market which is still cautious about the practicality of fully electric cars. The all-electric Golf-e was an impressive car, but the ID range is the first of the brands purpose built electric vehicles. The Golf size 5 door 5 seat family hatchback needs to take electric cars mainstream to be a worldwide success and I think it will. Starting with range, the 58kWh battery version used in all but one of models is good for around 260 miles, which in real life is more than adequate for a majority of trips. Early next year a larger 77kWh battery ‘Tour’ version will give a range of 336 miles. The car is no slouch, the 0-62 time of 7.3 seconds is only 1sec of the latest

Golf GTI. With instant torque the car feels fast and with 204BHP on tap the ID.3 makes duel carriageways a delight. The rear wheel drive chassis weighted with the batteries located on the floor makes driving on B roads is fun, something I haven’t experienced in electric cars of this size. The steering feels connected and apart from the lack of noise there are few driving compromises. The most surprising attribute is there is little need to use the brake pedal when set in brake mode where just lifting off the accelerator can bring the car to a rapid stop. Overall the car is wider, taller and longer than a Golf with a generous boot and good visibility all round. It has a futuristic look but not in a bad way. Inside as you’d expect there are all the latest safety features including lane departure and autonomous emergency breaking. There is a simplicity to the layout with a nice 10inch touchscreen which controls a majority of the functionality. If you are not a fan of fussy buttons, you’ll love the ID.3. Weight is important for electric cars and you can see that some

Volkswagen ID.3 First Edition of the out of sight plastics have been lightened, and I personally found the white steering wheel and inserts unlikely to be practical for a family car. (Darker colours are available) Overall as you’d expect from VW this is composed, well-built and fun to drive. If buyers can be realistic about how often they will undertake a single journey of over 260 miles then the ID.3 is a great choice. Prices (after the Government grant) start at around £30,000, with the model tested nearer £36,000. Given the competition, VW have stuck to their principles and having sold 35 million Golfs over the last 45 years in 2065 the brand will be hoping to exceed that number with the ID.3. Consultation opened by Dorset Council on the future of tourist information centres The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted that people need more information and advice about their local area including services and support available. During this period, local town and parish councils have worked closely with Dorset Council to strengthen the work that they do together in local communities, and we would like to build on these efforts when delivering local and visitor information in the future. There are a number of venues where visitor information can be accessed. These include five TICs provided by town councils or a local voluntary group, with Dorset Council currently managing four other TICs across the county. The future arrangements for visitor information in Lyme Regis is already being discussed with the local town council following more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

a previous consultation. This survey focuses on the remaining three Dorset Council TICs in Dorchester, Sherborne and Wareham. TICs provide the following key services: • free information including maps, local attractions and events, general information about the local area, bus/ transport provision and information about accessibility • ticket sales for some transport providers and for local events • accommodation information and booking for the local area. Providing information is an important part of the work of the TICs and the Council is aware that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic period may result in a greater need for more information and advice.

The TICs generate income to help with operating costs, with approximately £200,000 each year (for the 3 TICs) paid by Dorset Council to support the service, which is increasing each year. The majority of this funding is spent on staffing. The consultation is closes 29 November. Paper copies are available at all Dorset Council TICs and libraries if you are unable to complete the survey online. Dolphin Shopping Centre bucks national retail trend The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole is due to welcome six new retailers in the coming weeks, following a boost in demand for retail space in the town centre. Despite the declining national retail landscape, a wide range of retailers have committed to the centre, varying from independent start-ups to national scale businesses. Some retailers have already opened their doors to customers (Toy Town, Beales and The Hungry Racoon), whilst others are set to welcome shoppers in the coming weeks. The full list of retailers includes: Kaspas Desserts – National dessert café Hungry Racoon – Local independent café Valentina’s – Shoe shop Mobile Gift – Mobile phone repair shop Toy Town – Toy Shop Beales – Department store Amongst the signings are two food-based retailers. The Hungry Racoon, an independent café which serves a wide range of dishes, has seen a steady flow of business since opening earlier in the month. The café makes fresh dough each morning, using a traditional family recipe which dates back to 1863. Robert Saluzzo, owner of The Hungry Racoon, commented: “The Dolphin Centre is incredibly well positioned for both morning and lunch trade, which so far has proved successful. Having worked in an office block nearby, I felt there was an opportunity to offer commuters and local workers fresh and tasty food within a friendly and welcoming setting.” The second food retailer to open is a local branch of the national chain, Kaspas Desserts. Offering a menu that includes waffles, crepes, cakes, and puddings, the business is set to occupy the unit that neighbours HMV. Referencing the attraction of opening a branch in the Dolphin Centre, Rajeev Sharma, Kaspas Franchisee owner, said: “Poole is 52

a vibrant location with a lot to offer and we are extremely excited to open our doors to customers in the local community.” Inside the centre, work is currently underway on the unit in-between Clarks and H.Samuel. Independent retailer, Valentina Beautiful Shoes, is due to open its store in the coming weeks. This opening will mark the business’ second store, with its first located in Bournemouth town centre. Tina Williams, owner of Valentina’s, explained: “As an independent trader, opening a unit at the centre presented an

ideal opportunity for the business. Poole is a fantastic location for us to branch out into, and with such a friendly atmosphere in the centre, we are excited to be welcoming our customer base into our new store as soon as possible.” Centre Manager, John Grinnell, added: “I am really pleased to welcome such a wide range of retailers into our centre. The high level of interest shown by these businesses demonstrates the desirability of the local retail landscape that we have here in Poole. I wish them luck on their openings and am excited to see

the public’s reaction to these new additions to the centre.” The Dolphin Shopping Centre is currently open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 6.30pm, and Sundays from 10am to 5.30pm. Elderly and vulnerable customers are encouraged to shop between the hours of 9am to 10am, whilst NHS and key workers will be given priority between 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Lewis-Manning Hospice Care appoint Sir Simon and Lady Jill Campbell as Patrons TDSi Launches New Version of its Powerful GARDiS Integrated Security Software Integrated security manufacturer TDSi is proud to announce the launch of the new and enhanced version of its GARDiS security software, Version 2.0. Amongst the upgrades, GARDiS 2.0 features new Fire Door release and Site Lock Down functions, along with integration with ASSA ABLOY Aperio and SimonsVoss SmartIntego wireless locks. TDSi’s Managing Director, John Davies commented, “We are excited to unveil the new version of our Software as a Service (SaaS) GARDiS software. GARDiS 2.0 builds upon the foundations of the original version that was enhanced last year, but now features a singleinstallation web browser-based application that is fully modular and scalable. It is also simple to commission and use, with a highly intuitive GUI which reduces training, support and installation time – all of which make it perfect for the new normal world we now live in.” GARDiS 2.0 is designed for use when an end user is moving from a single site using individual GARDiS controllers (with embedded Web Server software) to upgrade to a project of over 44 doors and/ or for multiple sites. It is also fully compatible with all TDSi’s controllers (including the newest GARDiS controllers, along with MG and EX series), ensuring these hardware elements can be fully integrated after the software upgrade. Versions and licensing options There are two versions and licensing options for the GARDiS 2.0 software – Express and PRO. The Express option is free of charge and enables the inclusion of 20 doors at one site for one organisation. The PRO option starts with the same basis as the Express version but enables the end user to add

as many additional door licenses as required. Additional site and organisation licenses are also available, along with an IP Lock Service license (then a license for each individual ASSA ABLOY Aperio or SimonsVoss SmartIntego lock/device). Additionally, GARDiS 2.0 PRO features two options designed to deal with emergencies. Fire Door Release enables the end user to configure an instant input to unlock configured doors, whilst Door Lockdown instantly locks selected doors to prevent entry (which is particularly useful in protecting people and property in schools, colleges and universities). For even greater flexibility, GARDiS 2.0 PRO also features a REST API (‘Fusion’) option and full Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling it to be fully integrated with a wide variety of Video Management (VMS), Time & Attendance or third party control systems. John added, “GARDiS 2.0 is a game-changer in terms of complete flexibility of deployment and pricing. End users can purchase fully integrated security for as big or small a project as they need, with rapid scaling to suit quickly evolving and changing circumstances. It is also perfect for security integrators looking to offer their customers a highly bespoke solution with minimal installation time to do so. By taking a SaaS approach we are offering a complete choice of options, enabling security operators to buy exactly the solution they require, from single doors on one site, to hundreds or thousands of doors over multiple sites.”

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is delighted to announce the appointment of two new Patrons, Sir Simon and Lady Jill Campbell, who have been supporting the charity since March 2019. Living in the Poole area and sharing an interest in the work of local charities, Sir Simon and Lady Jill were introduced to the hospice’s new chief executive, Clare Gallie, back in March 2019 and were inspired by the care and support provided to local residents with life-limiting illnesses across Poole, East Dorset and Purbeck. Since then, the relationship has flourished and the couple have kindly agreed to become Patrons of this much-loved local charity. Sir Simon was formerly Head of Worldwide Research for Pfizer and was closely involved in the discovery of innovative new drugs such as doxazosin, amlodipine and sildenafil (Viagra) which have all proved to be outstanding clinical and commercial successes. Following retirement from Pfizer, Sir Simon served as President of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2004-06) and has acted as a scientific consultant for government, industry and charities, more recently focussing on malaria and TB. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999, appointed CBE for Services to Science in 2006 and was Knighted in 2015 for Services to Chemistry. Lady Jill has specialised in Physical Education, including secondary schools, yoga and activity classes for those suffering from MS and arthritis. She is an experienced quilter, and has made previous donations of her handiwork to the Hospice. Claire Gallie said: “Sir Simon and Lady Jill’s support has been manifest in many ways over the past year:- they have helped us move our Closer to Home strategy forward significantly, supported our profile raising initiatives, provided feedback and guidance on our plans, and have attended a number of events in support of both staff and local patients. Their interest in our work and valued inputs have been gratefully received in a time of major development for the charity. We are honoured that they have agreed to become Patrons of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, and we look forward to continuing working with them in the future”. Sir Simon and Lady Jill said: “We are delighted to join Lewis-Manning as Patrons. We very much appreciate the quality of support that the charity delivers for local residents with life-limiting illnesses, and were impressed by the enthusiasm of the different teams and their vision for the future of hospice care in Poole and surrounding districts.” Based in Longfleet Road Poole, the charity’s over-riding objective is to deliver outstanding professional and personal care for those in the local area with life-limiting illnesses. This includes increasing physical and social well-being, reducing isolation and loneliness and providing essential home support to alleviate the huge pressure on families and carers. www.lewis-manning.org.uk

£780,000 Lifeline Grant for The Tank Museum The Tank Museum has been awarded £780,000 as part of the UK Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund. The grant, issued by the Department of Culture Media and Sport through Arts Council England, will ensure the world-famous Dorset charity can weather the immediate storm of the pandemic whilst working towards a sustainable future. The Museum will spend the funds enhancing the visitor experience and developing new income streams, which will enhance financial resilience and safeguard jobs in 2021 and beyond. Director Richard Smith said; “We are enormously grateful for this urgently needed funding. This award is an investment in our future and acknowledges the hard work we have already put in to navigating the crisis. “We initially met the challenge of COVID-19 by rapidly developing our online retail business, but this cannot cover the losses we will have sustained during the pandemic – which has seen our visitor revenue fall by almost £3m. “We also worked hard to ensure we could reopen as soon as we were permitted but have been burdened by the increased costs of operating a visitor attraction to ‘COVID secure’

standards. “Our sense of identity and connection to the past is always important, especially in difficult times. This grant will enable us to make sure that a visit to The Tank Museum is both safe and engaging – and we can now also work to develop our online engagement and revenue raising activities which have proved so important over the last six months.” The Tank Museum team will now spend the winter working to complete a suspended World War Two exhibition for 2021, and developing new visit-enhancing features to replace tours and certain interactives that were not deemed ‘COVID secure’. The grant will also ensure that the Museum’s fleet of running vehicles can be appropriately maintained in the coming months– ready for the return of live-action vehicle displays in 2021. With the Museum’s online shop providing the only source of revenue during the lockdown, funds from the grant have also be allocated to improving the Museum's online shop and by making improvements to the fulfilment operation – unlocking further growth this winter. Mr Smith added; “As one of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country to receive financial aid today, I cannot overstate

how different our future would have looked without it. Our industry depends on important knowledge-based jobs that could otherwise have been lost in what is a relatively deprived rural area. “As a result, I know our supporters and followers around the world will share our gratitude and delight at this announcement. This essential support will fuel The Tank Museum’s fight back against the pandemic and allow us to emerge stronger than ever.” www.tankmuseum.org
