It’s been a really busy and exciting time in Dorset Chamber. In April, we launched the Dorset Business Festival to a huge response from the business community. Positioned as the major business event in Dorset for the year, the festival seeks to celebrate the excellence and vibrancy of businesses in Dorset with 3 major events over 3 days; day 1 is business conference focusing on the future of business, day 2 is a business exhibition and day 3 sees the return of the Dorset Business Awards. Ticket sales are busy for all 3 events and we already have a waiting list for the business awards. We advise early booking for the conference with Sunday Times economics editor David Smith and former BBC Breakfast business correspondent Declan Curry. The awards are open to all businesses in Dorset and free to attend. With a completely independent judging panel consisting of leading business people in Dorset, the awards are a very prestigious accolade of excellence in business. Two people from each finalist business will be invited to our black-tie celebration gala dinner and will also be profiled in our magazine and on our social media channels, offering a great opportunity for recognition as a leading business in Dorset. I encourage all businesses in Dorset to consider entering the awards, it could be one of the important things you do this year.
We also recently held our Dorset Apprenticeship Awards ceremony, promoting the contribution of
apprenticeships to business and also celebrating the incredible success stories of people in Dorset following an apprenticeship route. We had a high level of entries across all sectors and the judging was an extremely difficult task. You can see a list of everyone that entered in this magazine as well as information on our finalists and winners. I’d like to personally thank all that entered and also thank and praise employers and training providers that support the apprenticeship programme. Finally I recently attended the British Chambers of Commerce annual conference and our speakers included Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. It was a great event and really highlighted the importance of the Chamber voice at a national level with policy makers – feeding your views through to the highest levels. Don’t forget that as the accredited Chamber in Dorset, we have that voice – do please don’t hesitate to contact me on any areas of concern or issues you feel we should be lobbying on. We are there to support you.
I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine.

Recruitment –Accessing All Talent
It is crucial that employers periodically review their recruitment practices to ensure that their processes comply with current employment law and do not discriminate against or preclude potential candidates from applying.
Employers will often have an equality, diversity and inclusion policy, which will help encompass their general approach to recruitment and promotion.
In doing so, employers will also be tapping into a much wider group of candidates who will be more reflective of our diverse society.
To minimise potential barriers, employers need to be more critical and distil job roles to the basic required skills, qualifications and experience necessary to perform the role. Job descriptions and person specifications should therefore be based on objective criteria only.
Employers need to consider the form they ask candidates to apply, be it an application form, CV or another alternative assessment. An important point to remember is whether the form of application affords all potential candidates equal access to apply. If it might make it difficult for a specific group to apply, for example, someone with a disability, is there scope for the process to be adjusted or adapted to accommodate that candidate?
Where and how the vacancy is advertised is also extremely important to reach and draw candidates from a broader spectrum of society. Inclusive language should be used in the advert’s wording, and the vacancy should be advertised widely on different media forums, such as online, in the local press, websites, or even Facebook/ LinkedIn. If an employer is looking to attract underrepresented or protected groups, it can also look to focus its advertisement on
these groups by directly advertising with organisations who support those groups.
However, it is vital that employers equally promote vacancies within their internal workforce, too, so that they do not overlook or discriminate against internal candidates. Employers must advertise vacancies to those on maternity or shared maternity leave and those at risk of redundancy. Agency workers, in particular, must also have access to a list of any vacancies.
Ensuring two separate employees do the shortlisting independently is sensible when shortlisting applicants. In addition, those shortlisting should preferably have some training or, at minimum, a set of criteria and a scoring matrix to help them understand how to assess and shortlist each application properly.
Once this has been done and candidates shortlisted, they should be invited to an interview or an alternative assessment process. Candidates should be informed to notify the employer if they have any disability, which could affect their attendance or performance at the interview. The employer should then consider what if any, reasonable adjustment could be made to the process
reviewed to ensure the salary and benefits are comparable or distinguishable from other employees who may be undertaking the same or similar work. If the offer is subject to additional checks being undertaken, this should be made clear. All contractual documentation should be sent to candidates before starting their employment. It is a legal requirement that employees and workers should have access to this documentation from the day they start. In addition, salary and benefits must be comparable to those offered to other employees at the same or similar level to avoid discrimination or equal pay complaints. If employers comply with these simple steps, they will ensure they cast their net across a broader spectrum of candidates. As a result, they will also benefit from appealing to a much wider calibre of candidates who otherwise might have been inadvertently excluded or deterred from applying for a role at the company. If you would like assistance with employment matters, please contact Dee Woodcock in our Employment team by emailing online.enquiries@ la-law.com or calling 01202 786256.

Having visited the changing room, Caroline was given a hamper of goodies by Maisy Smith as well as defenders Amber Treweek and Kelly Fripp.
The hamper also included a gift voucher, provided by official partners Umbro, while Caroline and her family cheered on the women’s team from the stands, proudly wearing their MSP Capital training tops.

Successful applicants will learn trade skills across five boat building specialisms, comprising carpentry, plumbing, composite bonding, engineering, and electrical installations.
Following an intensive training programme, students will join colleagues at the Sunseeker Shipyards in Poole to further develop competencies and achieve a nationally recognised qualification over 12 months.
Supporting companies in developing a skilled workforce is key to economic growth in our county and I know a priority for Bournemouth and Poole college. This initiative will enable the creation of skilled jobs and no doubt bring more prosperity to Dorset.
I applaud both the College for responding so quickly to the needs of business and making it happen and for Sunseeker on taking on a problem in their industry and finding a solution. Big Well Done!

A diverse mix of business solutions pitched to Dorset Business Angels
Dorset Business Angels (DBA) hosted their quarterly pitch event at the Bournemouth Carlton Hotel and welcomed entrepreneurs based across the South of England, two of them from the BCP area. The ‘Dragons type Den’ initiative sees each presenting business with a strict ten minutes to make a compelling case for investment, followed by ten minutes of investors posing questions to the presenting entrepreneurs.
‘Rental of domestic EV charge points’
Amongst a diverse range of business proposals pitched throughout the event, the final pitch came from a company solving some of the issues of charging your electric vehicle at home, by facilitating the rental of domestic EV charge points with neighbouring motorists on a regular, bookable, and affordable basis, with all searching, booking, charging and payments managed in an app.
The founder described how only around half of UK drivers are likely to get a home charger and that 98% of EV sales are to those with off-street parking. People who can’t have home chargers aren’t buying EV’s. Describing the benefits for those who cannot have a home charge point;
• Reduced dependency for fleet operators on public charging points, more dependable scheduling, cheaper charging
• Cheaper, bookable, ‘off the clock’ charging for taxi and private hire drivers
• Reassurance to the private motoring to switch to an EV, providing the benefits of a home charger, without a home charger.
The pitching entrepreneur advised how the solution was an excellent fit for a huge emerging market, with a model applicable across the world and that now was the right time to accelerate growth. Seeking a bridging investment of £100k until several strategic investors considering a major investment in the business come on board in Q2 2023. www.dorsetbusinessangels.co.uk

Big Sleep Easy 2023
By Sheena Dayman, YMCA Bournemouth
YMCA recently launched their 6th BIG Sleep Easy Event. In 2018 and 2019 the events were at Chapel Gate. In 2019 there were over 100 business people, Including Ian Girling, chief executive, Dorset Chamber, whose team raised over £6K. Ian said “Sleeping outside at sub-zero temperatures has shown me how fortunate most of us are to have a roof over our heads and understand the difficulty that many people up and down the country have to go through.
“Waking up in the freezing cold with nowhere to wash or go is a horrible experience and you can’t imagine what it must be like everyday.
“We are proud that Dorset Chamber and its members are able to show their commitment and support to this excellent initiative, and continue to contribute to YMCA’s mission and passion in making a positive and lasting difference to people’s lives.”
In 2019, Lester Aldridge also took part becoming the main event sponsor. In the last 5 years they have raised over £22K. The weather and Covid did not deter them as Mark Benham and several of his team slept in their gardens in 2020. This year we are delighted to have Talbot Heath School as the venue for the 3rd time, with indoor facilities, if necessary, although we have never used them so far!
There were over 30 people at the recent launch at Barchester, Parley Place, and many signing up.
The YMCA Bournemouth Sleep Easy raises thousands of pounds annually, helping to tackle issues caused by homelessness in Bournemouth. It offers hope to local
Bournemouth and Poole homeless people, as well as creating an understanding of what it is really like to sleep rough for those taking part. Sleep Easy’s offer a fantastic challenge to individuals and organisations who wish to help raise awareness of the hardships of homelessness and raise funds for a Bournemouth homeless charity – one that works to bring homelessness to an
end. Participants, who can be individuals, groups, or businesses, set themselves a fundraising target before wrapping up warm, building a cardboard shelter and then ‘sleeping rough so others don’t have to’. The target this year is for 100 business people to raise £50K. For further information contact sheena. dayman@ymcabournemouth.org.uk

BU to participate in global Ocean Hackathon
Teams from Bournemouth University are to compete in a global Ocean Hackathon to provide solutions for issues affecting our seas.
The Hackathon, in its eighth year, gives teams from 16 global locations the opportunity to ‘hack’ solutions to local issues affecting the oceans. Working alongside local business partners, students; academics; and local organisations create teams to compete on the best solutions, drawing on local data and issues. The winning teams from each location will come together in Brest for the Grand Finale.
Alongside Bournemouth, teams from locations like Kuala Lumpur, Cherbourg, Rimouski and Mexico City will join together over the same 48-hour period to provide data-based solutions to environmental issues.
Professor Rick Stafford, a marine biologist based at Bournemouth University, is a part of the organising team. He said, “These hackathons are a chance to bring together a multidisciplinary team of experts, organisations and students to solve real-world issues that are affecting our oceans. We have the opportunity to work on issues that affect our own location and provide innovative solutions to the problems we are seeing – we’re looking forward to getting to work.”
The Hackathon takes place between 17-19 November, with a Call for Challenges currently open for local businesses and organisations to propose challenges that could be worked on during the Hackathon.
The call for challenges closes on 30 June, with an opportunity to hear more about the Hackathon, and how to get involved, taking place on Thursday 25 May at 5.30pm in BU’s Bournemouth Gateway Building. To get involved, and hear more about the work, book a place via Eventbrite. For more information visit www.ocean-hackathon.fr. www.bournemouth.ac.uk

Coles Miller completes complex deal
A complex commercial deal involving 38 properties and 174 ground rents has been successfully completed with the expert help of Coles Miller Solicitors.
The deal involved a portfolio of:
• 30 residential properties let on assured shorthold tenancies
• 7 industrial units and 1 retail property, all let on commercial leases
• 174 ground rents.
All the legal work was carried out by Coles Miller’s commercial property solicitors. They acted for the buyer and also for the mortgage lender.
The deal involved a member of a family purchasing the properties from four relatives, an estate and a joint trust. The buyer was purchasing 40.01% of a company; he already co-owned 59.99% of it.
It took nine months to complete the deal. Matters were overshadowed and complicated by the sad death of one of the shareholders. Probate had to be obtained and the company’s articles of association had to be changed.
Most of the work was done by Coles Miller commercial property
Associate Solicitor Charlotte Lilley.
“It was probably one of the most complex commercial property matters that I’ve ever handled,” she said.
“We had to change the company’s articles to meet the mortgage lender’s requirements as there would be more than one person with significant control.
“We needed to manage the control each party had in order to meet the lender’s requirements at the 11th hour. We had to deal directly with their underwriter in order to resolve all these issues,” she added. www.coles-miller.co.uk
Wessex Internet wins Project Gigabit contract
Wessex Internet wins government-funded Project Gigabit contract to roll out lightningfast connectivity to around 10,500 homes and businesses in the New Forest.
Thousands of homes and businesses across the New Forest and surrounding areas will benefit from high-speed full fibre broadband after a government contract worth nearly £14 million was awarded to Wessex Internet.
This new three-year contract is part of the UK government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit, which aims to provide lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband to hard-to-reach communities across the UK.
Wessex Internet will work closely with Forestry England and the Verderers of the New Forest throughout this three-year programme of work and expects to start network construction in the first communities by the end of this year.
Hector Gibson Fleming, CEO at Wessex Internet, said: “This is great news for homes and businesses in the New Forest who will be able to access worldclass connectivity and the many economic and social benefits it provides.
“We’re delighted to be awarded our second contract under Project Gigabit. It is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, and their strong track record of rolling out gigabit-capable connectivity to even the hardest to reach countryside communities.”

Higher cost of borrowing and end of Help to Buy sees appetite for land stall
The rapid rise in the cost of borrowing, along with the end of Help to Buy, saw the land market slow in Q4 2022, according to latest research from Savills.
Following a steady first three-quarters of 2022, Savills latest development land survey showed a -49% net balance of opinion on the number of bids per site for greenfield land in Q4, compared to the previous quarter, and net balance of opinion of -44% on the number of deals done, as developers felt press pressure to replenish their land pipelines.
Colin Wilkins, head of Savills south coast development team says: “The residential development land market has changed completely in the last year, from a highly competitive market to a much more steady, and selective one, with some developers stating that they have no short term requirement to add to their pipeline.”

Local children’s hospice charity steps out to mark 20 years of caring
Julia’s House has been providing essential respite care for local seriously ill children and their families for 20 years, with staff and supporters marking this milestone on Saturday 1 April, the anniversary of its first ever respite session.
On this special day, the charity’s CEO, Martin Edwards, joined Diana Lawrence, one of the first families supported by Julia’s House, as she walked 21 miles in tribute to her sister, Gabby, on what would have been Gabby’s 21st birthday. Diana and Martin were joined by Ruby McEvoy, whose family are also supported by Julia’s House, as well as the hospice’s Director of Care, Claire-Hudson Cooper, charity trustee, Jacquie Irvine and fundraisers Caroline Attreed and Sarah Agnew.
“It is important to mark this milestone of care not only for Julia’s House, but for the many families we have cared for over the last two decades. We also want to say a huge thank you to the committed supporters and volunteers without whom we would not have been able to provide this critical care and to all our staff who have made it possible for us to be there for local families every day,” said charity CEO Martin Edwards. www.juliashouse.org

The past three decades have seen major changes in the industry and prolonged periods of economic uncertainty. Donna reflects on how her employment with
Grapevine has continued to provide stability.
“Grapevine has been the one constant throughout my adult life. Our everevolving sector has kept me on my toes and long may I continue to learn!”
For Ed Shaw, visiting Grapevine’s former retail store on Poole High Street to buy a car charger for his Nokia 1611 unexpectedly led to a job in that same branch. 25 years later this moment of fate has continued to pay dividends.

Local Engineering Consultancy set sights on Broadway
Amtek Engineering Solutions has created a Flying DeLorean for the Broadway show, Back to the Future: The Musical! Harnessing its collective know-how and using cutting-edge technology, Amtek is building an airborne time machine just like in this classic hit.
The team pulled off an awe-inspiring effect that will have audiences absolutely stunned as Marty and Doc take flight. The ante was upped on the award winning London design with extra functionality, motion capabilities,
and smaller production crew in order to create something truly remarkable.
In addition, Amtek needed everything to be built and tested at home, in Dorset but be easily shipped to New York ready for opening night - not an easy task. But none of these requirements fazed the team and even after basic testing was completed, Amtek kept pushing forward until every element worked just right.

Providing awardwinning expertise
You may have heard that Tower were named Distributor of the Year at the Safety Health & Excellence Awards! This was a proud moment for the entire Tower team. Although there were several reasons we won, a key reason was our ability to deliver much more than just products.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can be the last line of defence from life changing and irreversible damage to health and wellbeing, or even death. But even though anyone can sell safety, you shouldn’t buy safety from just anyone. That why I’ve always believed that PPE doesn’t only stand for Personal Protective Equipment. It also stands for ‘Personal Protective Expert’. That’s why we deliver expert advice through a multitude of channels, including emails, social media, phone calls, our website, and at events. We ensure that our sales and marketing activity consistently supports company directors, health & safety representatives, buyers, and PPE wearers, by providing a series of expert guides for them to read, view, and download whenever they need to.
As well as guides to key categories such as PPE, protective clothing, and Hi Vis, we also provide guidance on new areas such as electric vehicle PPE. We cover topics that need more conversation, such as Female Fit PPE. And with more companies needing support on their sustainability goals, we cover sustainable workwear, and services that help customers reduce, reuse, and recycle. recruitment
ON with Mploy Staffing Solutions
Recruitment 101: Why delay when you can act?
We’ve all heard the saying ‘Slow and Steady Wins the Race,’ but that’s most certainly not the case in the jobs market at the moment.
I think it’s fair to say that we are now living in an ‘attention economy’ where without grabbing people’s attention, or giving people the attention they desire, they will move on or away from you as quickly as they showed their initial interest; this statement is pertinent to recruiters and jobseekers alike.
So, where am I going with this…….. does speed + attention/engagement = Success? Not always, but it sure does give you a much better chance.
Having recruited for hundreds of different businesses, and represented thousands of candidates on their job search, I know that you have to act quickly, efficiently and professionally to secure talent. As the employment market continues to become more competitive, can you really say you’re not creating unnecessary hurdles to slow down the process of employing or being employed?
We all know that often the best results are seen when we are decisive, sure we take into consideration the risks, the pros and cons but we take action. The days of waiting weeks or even months to know if you’ve been successful in your job application should be over. The next generation who live in the ‘attention economy’ will not be willing to wait, nor will they have to as many astute businesses are sweeping up the top talent by simply being first.
So, here’s my final thought, when possible don’t delay when you make a commitment to recruit or search out new employment. Be clear and concise in your goals, and make it happen or risk being left behind by those that do.

Mind charity grows ecotherapy support to 3 NEW sites across Dorset!
Dorset Mind is excited to announce their ecotherapy group support, Eco in Mind, is expanding to three new sites across Dorset. The new groups are targeted at carers, families and friends of people living with dementia, NHS and Blue Light workers, and patients at a GP surgery. Delivered in partnership with trusted organisations, the new locations are at Ferndown with the Growing Compassionate Communities initiative; Shillingstone with The Big Yellow Bus Project; and Shaftesbury based at Abbey View GP Surgery in connection with Shaftesbury in Bloom and the Blackmore Vale surgeries.
The local charity champions a whole-community effort - all produce grown at the new allotments will go to local food banks or communities, and residents at Moretons Abbeyfield Wessex Care Home are assisting the local project by planting seeds and nurturing seedlings, ready for growing at the Ferndown Dementia Friendly allotments.
Sharon Best, Eco in Mind Development Coordinator says, “I am so pleased that Eco in Mind will reach even more people across Dorset. We’re aiming to support different people such as carers, paramedics and Blue Light workers, alongside opening adult sessions in community growing spaces and a medical centre. This expansion will demonstrate how following the Five Ways to Wellbeing outside in nature supports mental wellbeing in the community.” www.dorsetmind.uk
Opening of new office supports strategic expansion plans
Leading South West law firm, Battens Solicitors is celebrating opening a new office in Bridport, West Dorset as part of its regional strategic plan for growth.

The Managing Director of Battens Solicitors, Ceri Stephens, commented; “The opening of the Bridport office is a significant development for the firm which forms part of our strategic plan for growth, and which gives us the opportunity to expand our footprint further into Dorset as we already have three offices at Sherborne, Dorchester and Wareham. Local Skills Improvement Plan: Latest Update
A draft plan for the Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan was submitted to the Department for Education in May 2023. In this feature Nicola Newman, project lead for Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan, gives an update on what the next stage to March 2025 looks like.
We have a plan…because so many employers, training providers and others have contributed to it. Thank you to you all. It’s now published, in draft, on our website while the Department for Education review it and feedback. You can view the draft at www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/lsip
The big issues highlighted in the report are not new - climate change, labour shortages, young people with increased anxiety, people with disabilities struggling to find a job, affordable housing shortages and insufficient public transport. This is the background to the skills debate.
We have heard:
Different sectors need different skills, but all employers need committed people and basic IT skills right across their workforce. Maths skills, software developers and programmers too. All sectors need more managers and leaders to help them grow.
Learners and potential learners don’t know enough about the skills Dorset employers are looking for, or about the technical education options which are available to them - those starting their careers and those looking to upskill.
Training providers need viable student numbers, and the equipment and Tutor
expertise, to run new courses.
The next stage starts immediately, and it involves everyone. The easy option is to explain what someone else should do about skills and behaviours…schools, parents, employers, colleges, young people, older people…etc. But it’s now time for ‘I could…’. The more employers do that’s new to them in future, everything to recruit, retain and train differently, the greater the size, strength, and depth of the Dorset economy.
The two all-stakeholder events held by Dorset Chamber during the LSIP consultation stage were the start of a more joined-up, Dorset-wide conversation that we intend to keep going, starting with an LSIP event on 15 June at the Business Expo at AFC Bournemouth. We are interested to hear from employers on an on-going basis so we can support each other and work together to do things differently.

Charity and Voluntary Work
Volunteering in our local communities or working towards achieving a sponsored goal can be inspiring. Charity work provides an opportunity to meet a wide range of people we may not get to meet in our day-to-day lives. It can benefit anyone who feels isolated or lonely by introducing them to new friends with shared interests.
Learning new skills and boosting confidence also attracts people to voluntary work. Giving back and seeing your hard work’s direct impact can also improve self-esteem and overall wellbeing.
A reported 6 million people helped join in with ‘The Big Help Out’ on 8 May 2023, and many businesses also encourage staff to take part in volunteering days as part of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) initiatives.
Whether you take part in a beach clean for a day, give your time up regularly as a volunteer or organise a one-off local fundraising event, it will undoubtedly be rewarding for you too.
With such a variety of skills needed in a range of environments, it is worth looking around your local area to see where you can make a difference by sharing your skills and your time.
