I’d like to begin by offering our congratulations to all our finalists in the prestigious 2023 Dorset Business Awards, our first awards since before the pandemic. We received almost 170 entries across the 10 categories. The standard of entries was very high with many businesses across all sectors demonstrating excellence and innovation in so many areas. The Dorset Business Awards really do celebrate the quality and diversity of businesses we have in Dorset and I wish our finalists the very best of luck in advance of our Gala dinner on 12th October. The Dorset Business Awards form part of the Dorset Business Festival, the premier business celebration of the year in Dorset. Tickets are still available for the opening networking breakfast at Rick Stein’s on the 9th October, the conference on the 10th and the Business Expo on the 11th.

The week offers a fantastic networking and profile-raising opportunity as well as the opportunity to discuss key issues for business as we look to the future. You can see more information in the magazine. Finally the theme of the magazine this month is scaling up and we have some contributions from our partners on what scaling up means and how this can be achieved. This was also a very popular category in the 2023 Dorset Business Awards with many excellent and inspiring stories of how businesses and organisations have achieved growth.

I hope you enjoy our magazine this month and my best wishes

Hello and welcome to our September magazine! September, where has the year gone?!

From optimizing operations, building a brand and managing resources, to cultivating a strong company culture, adapting to market shifts, and building a scalable infrastructure, when it comes to expanding your business, there are many plates to spin. It can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming at times.

Across the Dorset Chamber network you will meet business leaders who share a wealth of experience. They’ve been there, done it and are happy to support others going through their own transformations. We reached out to some of our Business Partners and asked them to share their insights and expertise on scaling and growing a business.

“Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. Through listening to their needs, concerns and expectations, we can deliver innovative and realistic solutions and provide the optimal result. Serving our clients in this way has grown our reputation and business. Investing in our staff is also key to scaling, allowing us to constantly expand our expertise.

“We recognise the importance of developing the technology we use to better enhance working conditions for staff and enhance the service we provide to our clients. Attaining recognised international standards such as ISO 27001 certification, CQS accreditation and Lexcel accreditation also builds clients’ confidence in our business and has allowed us to scale further.”

“Employees with the right knowledge, technical and people skills are often at the heart of scaling up a business. Expanding businesses may need new skills to alter structures, or use new software and equipment, or to put in processes suitable for bigger volumes of work. That might mean short-term, focused training, or longer-term development of employees’ skill sets. In a competitive labour market, firms might find opportunities in recruiting and employing people differently, by using apprenticeship funding, or by identifying focused degree-level training opportunities. These types of training can be used for both newcomers and established staff.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS 4 September 2023 | Dorset Business Focus /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber /company/dorset-chamber/
We recognise the importance of developing the technology we use to better enhance working conditions for staff and enhance the service we provide to our clients.
Expanding businesses may need new skills to alter structures, or use new software and equipment, or to put in processes suitable for bigger volumes of work.

“Let’s cut to the chase – scaling up a business is relentlessly hard work. You need to be in the best shape possible, mentally and physically. So cut out the booze, junk food and nicotine and ensure you are getting regular exercise. Self-care is essential.

“Take your responsibilities as a director seriously. Each decision you make mostly has a positive or negative consequence rather than a neutral one. Perhaps the best way to make ‘change’ decisions is to imagine you must justify your thought process and actions to a court jury – that focuses the mind.

“Get a grip from day one of your financial numbers. You need to know your business’ daily, weekly, monthly and annual breakeven, down to the last penny. If you cannot give an accurate answer to this right now, you are storing up problems and don’t have control and understanding.

“If you sell cheap, customers will want cheap cheaper. Know your value and turn down orders that are either loss-leading or wash your face – they will incrementally drag you down into the red zone of debt.

“Scaling up is exciting but always be led by the financials from day one; don’t get carried away in good times. Think hard before employing too many people in case you end up with costly overcapacity where extra profitability is soaked up by salaries and associated costs rather than going to the bottom line.

“Remember the golden rule – turnover is vanity, profit is sanity and cash in the bank is reality. For peace of mind, aim to build up cash reserves where there is more than enough to pay off all creditors, including HMRC, lenders, staff and suppliers/contractors.”

“Investment is key to success as you scale up, whether that is in people, facilities or technology. Our colleagues shape the future of our business, and we continually invest in their skills to ensure a well-trained workforce moving forward, at all levels from apprentices to our leadership team with high quality, accredited schemes such as the Chartered Management Institute.

“When it comes to facilities, we want the very best showrooms and service centres for customers and we are building new facilities all the time. My advice would also be that you should never underestimate investment in technology, for example, our bespoke web platform and customer app, together with aftersales systems continue to support us as we scale up our business.”

“To grow your business successfully, to my mind, you have to build your tribe. Create a team which has shared values and a blend of skill sets which complement each other. Be absolutely clear on what you stand for though. How do you want to be seen beyond the walls of your business?

“The challenge internally is ensuring you stay true to your values and demonstrate consistent behaviours to your team, reinforcing your ethos. Then something really exciting can build as your team picks up the mantle and with guidance, start shaping the culture within the organisation. Building a company on strong foundations is absolutely essential for continued success.”

“The big lesson for me is about hiring the right people. Hire slowly, and replace quickly if it is not working out. Spend more and bring in experienced people when smaller as they will help you grow quicker. The right people will also be self-motivated and drive things forward for you.

“It’s also key to have the right people in the right seats, you can’t afford to put the wrong people in the wrong seats. We often hire specialist freelancers that do one thing exceptionally well. You are better off with 4 good freelancers with specialist skills than 1 generalist.”

Legal Considerations when Scaling Up your Business

Structure: If you started as a sole trader or partnership, consider whether you should incorporate as a limited company as you scale up. Proper documentation, such as a shareholders’ agreement, helps ensure you have a framework for your future development.

External Funding: There are various ways to achieve funding for business growth, and you should have discussions with your lawyers and accountants to establish the best plan tailored to your ventures. External financing may be key to bringing sufficient working capital into the business to allow growth. Funding methods include angel investors, crowdfunding, accelerator or incubator programmes, venture capital, and private equity.

Mergers and acquisitions: Mergers and acquisitions can be a central aspect of growth strategy. They can allow your business to expand quickly into new markets or sales territories, increase value for existing shareholders and reduce risk through diversification, increase the range of products and services offered, acquire

Property: As your business expands, you may require more physical accommodation. Care should be taken when entering into commercial leases or purchases, as many factors can negatively impact business growth. Considerations should include the length of the lease, the likelihood of being able to sell the property in future, characteristics of the building itself and the amount of repair or maintenance it may require (and who pays for it), break clauses if you need to move to bigger premises in future, plans for the area in which the building is located which may impact its value, fluctuations causing the property value to decrease and specific sector risks.

Supply chain: Expanding your business frequently involves using new suppliers or manufacturers to increase business capacity, expanding distribution or territories using distributors or sales agents and exploring international growth. It is essential to ensure proper contracts with all third parties are in place to reduce the risk of legal claims and damage to the business’s reputation. Companies may also be responsible for their supply chain under anti-bribery and corruption, data protection, environmental

happen, following planned protocols should help reduce the negative impact on the business and your customers and maintain trust and reputation. Proper cyber security measures will assist a company to demonstrate it is taking data protection seriously, which may lessen punitive sanctions from the ICO discussed above. The above are just a few matters to address from a legal perspective when scaling a business. If you need assistance, we’d be happy to help, so please do not hesitate to contact our Corporate & Commercial team by emailing online.enquiries@ la-law.com or calling 01202 786188.

Supporting your staff through cost-of-living challenges in Dorset

As a business owner in Dorset, you are undoubtedly aware of the struggles your employees face with the everincreasing cost of living. The financial burdens can significantly impact your staff’s well-being and productivity. As an employer, it is essential to recognise these challenges and provide signposting to support your team during these difficult times.

Dorset, like many other counties, has experienced rising living costs in recent years, and employees may find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet on their salaries alone. For some, renting a property may be the only viable option, and with rental prices at their highest, it can be a significant strain on their finances. Additionally, food prices continue to escalate, impacting both single and family households.

One of the first steps in supporting your employees is to open communication channels. Encourage an open-door policy where employees feel comfortable discussing their financial concerns. Another option is to engage with local organisations and community groups that focus on financial empowerment and support. Partnering with these organisations can enhance the assistance available to your employees and help build a strong support network for them.

We’re delighted to unveil this exciting new offering, with boardroom members receiving a truly unique experience at our stadium on a matchday.

In conclusion, supporting your staff through the challenges of the cost of living in Dorset is not just an act of goodwill but also a strategic investment in your business. By providing signposting to resources and implementing supportive policies, you can strengthen employee morale, loyalty, and productivity, fostering a more resilient and engaged workforce.

Bournemouth & Poole College introduce T Levels

Bournemouth & Poole College has introduced a series of T Levels for the first time and has confirmed that more than 30 employers are already signed up to support the new post-16 courses.

The College has introduced T Level courses in education and childcare as well as digital and computing. Employers supporting these courses include Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd, VR Centre and Top Bananas Pre-School.

T Levels are the equivalent to three A Levels, focusing on technical and vocational skills, and are aimed at helping students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. Each two-year course will combine classroom study with an industry placement that lasts a minimum of 45 days, giving students valuable experience in the workplace, while employers get early sight of new talent.

Phil Sayles, principal at Bournemouth & Poole College, said: “We’re incredibly proud to offer these latest qualifications to 16- to 19-year-olds. T Levels are an

excellent route into university, onto a degree apprenticeship or into some outstanding careers. We’ve worked hard, talking to local employers, to ensure we have exciting industry placement partnerships. These placements will give students the opportunity to put their learning into practice so they can really understand their chosen industry.

“By injecting young talent into an experienced workforce, the employer benefits from new ideas and ways of working and it also gives them an opportunity to nurture the skills needed within their particular workforce. T Levels are very much employer-led qualifications and it’s important that we continue to build longstanding relationships with local firms to help create a fully qualified, well-trained, and highly skilled workforce of the future.”

Dorset Chamber looks to the future

Rising stars of the Dorset business world have taken the helm of the county’s Future Leaders’ Forum.

Dorset Chamber has launched the new group for young professionals aged up to 30 for networking, peer support, and personal and career development.

Now it has appointed Toni Taylor as chair, and Jack Ormesher and David Massieu-King as joint vice-chairs of the forum.

Toni, who is managing director of Tru Talent, will also sit on the Dorset Chamber board to represent the forum and share issues raised by young professionals.

She said: “I can honestly say that I feel very proud and incredibly excited to have been appointed by Dorset Chamber as the chair of the Future Leader Forum.

“Having attended some of the Future Leader events and seeing how many incredible individuals came along, it really highlighted the scope we have to impact our community as well as educate businesses on the changing desires and needs from our future leaders.”

Chamber president Caron Khan said: “Congratulations to Toni, Jack and David.

“The forum has got off to an excellent start, with its impressive young professionals already bringing forward some exciting ideas and fresh perspectives on business. The future is in safe hands.” www.dorsetchamber.co.uk

Navigating the public sector tender process

Do you find bidding for government or public sector contracts very difficult, or just stay away from them all together because they seem impossible to navigate? Contrary to popular belief, winning a public sector contract is not as hard as it seems. With a good understanding of how the tendering process works and a clear strategy in place, it can be relatively painless.

Winning Tenders have put together a quick checklist of dos and don’ts to help you navigate the public sector tender process: Do

• Complete the tender in full and do exactly what is asked of you

• Complete the tender in a particular format, if asked to do so

• Contact the buyer if you are unclear of any aspects of the tender

• Be creative – What is your USP?

• Price at a point that is sustainable for your business

• Submit your tender 24 hours prior to the deadline

• Hire a consultant to help you complete your bid if you’re unsure Don’t

• Go for contracts that you cannot fulfil

• Confuse the Selection Questionnaire (SQ) and invitation to tender (ITT) phases

• Ignore the word count or fail to fill in any part of the tender document

• Submit stock corporate sales material and standard copy

• Include bold statements that cannot be backed up with evidence

• Introduce inappropriate or ill-prepared people

• Submit your tender late

• Forget to inform your nominated referees

Cash is KING

Following the reaction to the recent interest rate increases by the Bank of England to levels not seen since 2008, insolvency practitioners Antony Batty is encouraging businesses to develop a strong cash culture, emphasising that ‘cash is still king’ when it comes to the survival of a business.

Elaine Wilkins, Antony Batty, said: “It is true to say that many companies are just about surviving, following energy price increases, rapid inflation and supply chain problems. Debt funding is now more expensive and with debt and equity funding being harder to raise, working capital – cash – is the cheapest form of liquidity.

“Insolvency practitioners are not just here for the times when liquidation is the only option. Very often we play a big role in helping businesses in distress take the action needed to help turn things around. Cash flow forecasting is just one of those tools.”

Businesses are invited to contact Antony Batty for a free initial consultation with one of its team at any of its offices. To find out more call 01202 923009.

Further insight on why cash is so crucial and some of the steps businesses can take to manage cash flow, is available on the Dorset Chamber website. Visit the news section and search ‘Antony Batty’. www.antonybatty.com

Menopause in the Workplace

As women navigate the natural phase of menopause, workplaces play a vital role in ensuring a supportive atmosphere. World Menopause Day takes place on 18 October and it brings to light the importance of understanding and addressing menopause-related challenges that employees face. Talking about the topic breaks the silence around menopause and minimises stigma, encouraging open dialogues that bolster mental health and work performance.

Throughout October, and beyond, employers may like to look at the way they are handling menopause in their workplace. From flexibility of schedules, temperature control and resource accessibility, to fostering an inclusive environment that values well-being, support provided for menopause symptoms (such as hot flushes, mood fluctuations and sleep disturbances) can lead to reduced absenteeism and improved job satisfaction.

Beyond individual benefits, workplaces that prioritise menopause awareness showcase a commitment to gender equality, as a significant segment of the workforce experiences this transition.

How are you supporting menopause in your workplace? Let us know and inspire others press@dorsetchamber.co.uk

The ESG Framework

The ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework is becoming more significant, not just for employers and employees, but for jobseekers too.  As well as looking into the culture of a business, jobseekers are actively interested in how attuned a business is to their responsibilities around ESG before they consider applying for a vacancy.

I had the pleasure of interviewing our future trainee solicitors as part of our assessment programme recently. Having been involved in various aspects of the recruitment process over many years, it has become clear that an increasing number of job seekers are keen to ensure that their next employer not only supports a robust ESG strategy, but also demonstrates their commitment in their day-to-day business activities.   Many of the candidates I met, from a wide range of backgrounds with many different experiences, spoke highly of our previous initiatives at Lester Aldridge, and were keen to include reference to ESG in their applications, interview responses and presentations.

There are many articles that show that candidates will purposefully avoid businesses that do not align with their principles and so it is important for businesses hoping to attract top talent to not only understand how their activities may impact the environment, but to be able to show the processes they have in place to minimise any negative impacts.

When businesses are considering their ESG policies it is a good opportunity to involve their workforce as well as their suppliers.  We have an active ESG Committee at Lester Aldridge who are involved in the roll out of new policies and support our initiatives across all our teams and offices.
