DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

I

t’s hard to believe how quickly time passes and it’s April already! The days are becoming longer and Summer is just around the corner, and as someone who doesn’t particularly like dark mornings and evenings, the changing of the seasons as we move out of winter is my favourite time of year With plenty happening, I’m providing a full update this month which you can see later in the magazine. Our new President, Liz Willingham, has really got into her stride and has been focusing on promoting the importance of health and wellbeing and March saw both our new yoga group, as well as another major event, focusing on all aspects of health and well-being. We’ve been out and about in the county and recently had the pleasure of taking our Business Partners to lunch with the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury with a guided tour of his beautiful family home by Lord Shaftesbury himself. Our Brexit conference, in partnership with Dorset LEP and Bournemouth University, was attended

by around 150 delegates, and with the help of an expert panel, offered practical advice to businesses. Of course Brexit is the main issue that’s perplexing us all. With the situation changing daily, it’s been extremely uncomfortable and frustrating for all watching the political chaos and the British Chambers of Commerce have been extremely forthright in their demands of politicians to do the right thing for ULK PLC. As I write this, 1003 days have passed since the referendum and it’s incredible to think we’ve had to ask for an extension as we’ve not been able to agree a deal in this time. Whatever the outcome, Dorset Chamber will continue to do its very best to support our business community, help businesses navigate export rules and regulations and help businesses develop trade in both UK and international markets. Businesses Given Brexit Boost At Conference Businesses in Dorset were urged to seize the support on offer to help prepare for the challenges and opportunities of Brexit. More than 130 delegates attended the Business Brexit Conference to hear practical advice about the impact of the UK’s departure from the EU. The non-partisan event – organised by the Dorset Chamber with Bournemouth University and Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership – featured top regional and national experts. Issues raised in a question and answer session with an expert panel, included supply chains, VAT registration, no-deal Brexit, working time directives, food safety, trade deals, employment and broadband. All delegates received a Brexit support pack via email from the Dorset Chamber – the county’s voice of business – following the conference at the Hallmark Carlton Hotel in Bournemouth. Ian Girling, who is chief executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “This conference was a timely opportunity to talk through practical issues surrounding Brexit. “It was a great success and I was impressed by the positivity and ‘can do’ attitude shown by the many Dorset businesses at the conference. “They listened intently to the advice offered, and were urged to take full advantage of the support available as we move through the Brexit journey.”

The Dorset Chamber, the county’s leading business support organisation, held the event as part of its programme of activities to help firms during Brexit. Speakers included Matthew Elliott, who was chief executive of the Vote Leave campaign during the referendum, Stuart Chapman from the Government’s Business Intelligence and Readiness Directorate and Prof Nigel Jump, a strategic and analytical economist from Bournemouth University. The expert panel included REIDsteel managing director and CBI manufacturing council member Simon Boyd, Mr Elliott, Prof Jump, Kate Fretten of Frettens Solicitors, Bournemouth University professor of economics Dr Sangeeta Khorana and Lester Aldridge international trade lawyer Linda Jacques. It was chaired by Nicola Newman, who is chief executive of Ansbury Guidance. The conference, sponsored by Purple HR, was free for members and nonmembers of the Chamber. It was the latest in the Chamber’s series of Dorset Business Forums, which address heavyweight issues affecting the county. Dorset Chamber is offering more support for businesses, including seminars, international trade support and advice in a dedicated Brexit section on its website. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk for more details.

The UK Government appears to be still trying to cross the first Brexit hurdle, in order to reach a point where some measure of certainty, on paper at least, can said to have been achieved. Whether Theresa Mays’ deal, or an extension is obtained or no deal, the current uncertainty is likely to become the norm. When looking at existing contract terms preparatory steps can be taken by any business to pin point problem issues: • By identifying contractual provisions dealing with the “EU” as a territory. • Identifying references to EU legislation in contracts with a view to determining what impact each of the Brexit scenarios will pan out on those clauses. • Identifying the cost-benefit analysis clauses in a contract, such a pricing, currency clauses (and currency fluctuation clauses), price reviews, renegotiation clauses and VAT changes. • Clauses which apply free movement of goods ‘services and people. • That groundwork should enable a negotiation strategy to be discussed and agreed by businesses to deal with all three current scenarios. LA MARINE, Lester Aldridge LLP – Linda Jacques

The UK released the temporary no-deal tariffs on 13 March 2019. The proposed schedule covers roughly 5,500 tariff lines with duty rates shown across 470 tariff lines only, which means that tariffs will be cut to zero on 87% of imports. From the perspective of producers of physical goods in the UK, it is important to understand what tariff protections firms have enjoyed against imports up until now and whether that protection remains. In light of latest developments, it may be useful for producing firms to insure against any potential financial impact and also consider whether it is worth re-financing and securing extra financial headroom. UK importers are advised to analyse relevant tariffs on intermediate and final goods. It is important to consider (in light of tariffs) if your firm could consider sourcing inputs to potentially reconfigure supply chains with countries beyond the EU?” Professor S Khorana Bournemouth University Business School 4

Amid all the chaos at Westminster recently, one simple statistic has slipped under the radar: UK exports have grown to a massive £636 billion. British goods and services are hugely in demand. We have a £41 billion trading surplus with the world outside of Europe. Meanwhile we have a deficit of -£95 billion on trade in goods with the EU. Even a surplus of £28 billion on trade in services leaves us with an overall trade deficit of -£67 billion with the EU. It is clear where the growth is. One of the great prizes of Brexit is the potential to strike our own deals worldwide with an independent trade policy for the first time in nearly 50 years. Depending on the next phase of Brexit negotiations, British firms – and those in

Dorset – have the opportunity to enter new, fast growing markets in a world of opportunity beyond Europe. Combined with a revival of British Standards and a willingness to adopt a global leadership role on trade, there is every cause for optimism. Our own firm REIDsteel has exported to more than 140 countries in a century of trading. We know that there are tremendously exciting opportunities out there – and help is available whether it is from the Dorset Chamber, Department for International Trade and or Government agencies. There is nothing to be afraid of, and everything to gain.” Simon Boyd, Reid Steel @DorsetChamber

Dorset Chamber Backs Brexit Rallying Cry Dorset business chief Ian Girling backed a stinging Brexit rebuke for politicians at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) conference in London. Ian, who is chief executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, threw his weight behind a hard-hitting speech from BCC director general Adam Marshall about the Brexit chaos. A delegation from Dorset was thrust into the heart of the Brexit debate as they attended the annual BCC conference at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre opposite the Houses of Parliament. In his keynote speech to a packed conference hall Dr Marshall warned: “To Westminster we say, we are frustrated. We are angry. You have let British business down.” He added: “We in business must make it clear that our elected representatives cannot keep chasing rainbows. “Like all of us in in business, they need to start making tough decisions, however personally or politically difficult they might be.”

Speakers at the conference included Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss MP, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Theresa May’s de facto deputy David Lidington MP and Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Kier Starmer. Ian said: “I completely endorse the BCC view that this Brexit chaos has continued for far too long. “Dorset businesses, like others at the conference have remained resilient and resolute as politicians have gone around in circles for three years but we need some decisions and we need them now.” Ian added: “Aside from Brexit, there was a great deal of positivity in the hall as we discussed such developments as AI and heard from high-calibre business speakers.” Dorset Chamber, the county’s voice of business, leads a delegation to London every year.

Members who flew the flag for Dorset this year included Blue Sky Financial Planning, Deep South Media, Greendale Construction, HSBC, Meggitt and Savills.

Aside from Brexit, there was a great deal of positivity in the hall as we discussed such developments as AI and heard from high-calibre business speakers more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Speakers and panellists included Drax Group plc chief executive Will Gardiner, Stagecoach Group chief executive Martin Griffiths, Legal & General chef executive Nigel Wilson, Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis and TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady. The Dorset Chamber, the county’s leading business support organisation, is the only chamber in Dorset to be accredited by the BCC.

It has a wide range of Brexit support available for businesses. Visit its website at www.dorsetchamber. co.uk for more details. 5

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PRESIDENTS COLUMN

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham

Having a cultural offer and improved profile as a region is key to being a beacon for the stars who will make our businesses fit for the future. It’s been an active month in the Dorset Chamber camp.

C

ontinued uncertainty and a confused government are challenges out of our control. It is hugely frustrating. In light of this, the BCC has downgraded its growth expectations for the UK economy to 1.2%; if this becomes reality then they claim it will be the “weakest growth in a decade”. Interesting times, when conversely unemployment has also fallen to a 44-year low. But as I write this, on International Happiness Day, it’s best we get into a different mode and consider all the great things going on here in our wonderful county. Things are happening on the ground in Dorset which will help shape and influence our future prosperity. The Dorset LEP has launched its Local Industrial Strategy that will set out how Dorset can achieve its ambition for economic growth. We are in full support of this initiative and would urge Dorset’s business and industry leaders or groups that represent industry sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, tourism, creative technology, finance or agriculture to get involved and have your say. Three consultation events are happening across the county this month. To find out how you can engage go to www.dorsetlep.co.uk Bolstering our representation of the manufacturing sector on our own board we welcome Simon Boyd, Managing Director of REIDSteel who brings over 30 years of experience and has grown with the renowned structural steel company from a supplier through to a very hands-on Managing Director. Simon has been instrumental in influencing more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

government policy at both Westminster and Brussels level, to protect the interests of an industry which faces on-going challenges. Simon is a motivating leader and shares my focus on wellbeing in the workplace, being a strong advocate for this at REIDSteel. We are so fortunate to have such a robust board with complementary yet diverse skills, ensuring our members are represented with a 360 degree approach. We will do our very best to keep it that way. Recently Ouch Training and BWT hosted a wonderful event focusing on wellbeing in the workplace. The Chamber is proud to be a supporter of this and sincerely thank Hall & Woodhouse for their generous hospitality, accommodating us in their brewery in Blandford. Thank you to Ouch for creating such a fantastic event, which was attended by over 60 business people, who all gave great feedback about how useful it was. As a result, I am hoping to see more businesses promoting the ‘Midday Mile’ to their teams; 20 minutes of activity out in the natural environment during the working day makes a huge difference to resilience and productivity. Follow the likes of Greendale Construction and give it a go. The success of this has kick-started plans for further events giving local businesses tools and techniques to help themselves, and their employees, stay well. At the beginning of my tenure I suggested a Chamber Yoga event which proved hugely popular and provided a healthy way to network in a positive setting; everyone attending said it was a great way to start the day. Look out for more dates in the near future… we have started something really exciting! Thank you to everyone for your continued support and interest in the wellbeing focus, it’s so critical we

keep this high on the agenda. I mentioned in a previous issue that we need to find ways to attract talent to the area and to our businesses which go beyond the draw of our stunning natural landscape. Having a cultural offer and improved profile as a region is key to being a beacon for the stars who will make our businesses fit for the future. I strongly believe there is a chain reaction; so becoming known for our regeneration, cultural diversity and artistic credibility will surely make a difference to our recruitment and retention challenges. This is why the current Cultural Enquiry for the new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole authority is so important to engage with on all levels. The business voice needs to be heard loudly throughout the short consultation period (which we are already well into). What do we need to make a difference when interviewing a prime candidate beyond the role and our own environments? What will make them feel fulfilled, inspired and simply happy to live here? I don’t believe the enquiry has been heard about widely enough, so please take a minute to check out www.culturalenquiry.co.uk, #culturalenquiry2019 on Twitter and contact the consultants, Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy, on culturalenquiry@tfconsultancy.co.uk with your views and suggestions. We may only have one shot at getting this right. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Until the next time, stay (manageably busy) and well…..

Chief Executive’s Update – April 2019

This month I’d like to take the opportunity to update you on a number of areas we are focusing on as a Chamber. I’d like to briefly talk about Brexit. We’ve been exasperated by the lack of the ability of politicians to come together and support the Prime Minister in trying to secure the best exit deal for the UK and it seems incredible that in the 33 months since the 2016 referendum, we’ve had to ask the EU to agree to an extension to Brexit to avoid a no-deal. On a local level, we’ve been vocal regarding the huge negative impact of uncertainty on businesses, urging politicians to do the best thing for our businesses. Nationally, the British Chambers of Commerce have been strongly lobbying politicians to agree an exit deal that supports UK business. Many don’t realise we help Dorset businesses export £200 million worth of goods per year around the globe with a team of international trade experts dedicated to helping Dorset businesses develop new markets and export goods. We are on hand to help advise on Brexit issues and have several Brexit support tools for businesses on our website. Post Brexit there will still be huge growth opportunities for businesses through exporting and we’ll be doing our best to encourage and help businesses export. We have invested in the skills of our team and are now approved to deliver a Customs Declarations Service. Customs Declarations are required for all exports and imports outside of the EU and may apply to EU trade post Brexit. Dorset Chamber can now deliver a future-proof and HMRC-compliant Customs Declaration Service. Our Head of International Trade Rob Booth is now one of only ten people in the national Chamber network qualified to deliver Customs Declaration training to all businesses. Currently grants of up to 70% of the cost of training are available – contact us to find out more. To celebrate our 70 years as a Chamber of Commerce, June 6th has been set as the date for a 70th Anniversary Presidents Ball, sponsored by our longest serving members, Goadsby. This is instead of our annual Presidents Lunch and will be a spectacular evening with a three-course dinner, dancing and live music and will honour the many Presidents that have served Dorset Chamber. This promises to be a great evening and tickets are on sale now on our website. We’ve played a key role in helping develop the employability and life skills of young people in mainstream education over the last three years through our Young Chamber programme and this year will see us build on this as we found a new charity that will raise funds to help provide employability and life-skills support for young people in care and care leavers. We’ll be partnering with Dorset Community Foundation and the charity is likely to be called The Dorset Chamber Life Skills Trust. Research shows 40% of all care leavers aged 19 to 21yrs in England are not in employment, education or training and only 7% of children in care gain entry to university. Our aim, working closely with both Dorset local authorities, is to raise funds to support activities such as finding business mentors for young people in care and care leavers, finding supportive work placements and funding the delivery of 10

April 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

employability workshops. We’ll ensure we don’t duplicate any existing provision and our support will be targeted where there are gaps in support. The idea has been welcomed by the local authorities and we feel we can really make a positive contribution to these young people’s lives. If you’d like to get involved, please let us know. On the issue of local authorities, we now have two unitary authorities for the county; Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. We believe this is a big step forward in terms of improving resource efficiency, streamlining services and enabling clear strategic plans for both the rural and urban areas of Dorset. I’ve had extremely positive meetings with both Chief Executives and pledged our support to work closely with them in delivering economic growth in Dorset. We’ve had some new arrivals in the Chamber. I’d like to welcome morebus and Dorset LEP as our newest Business Partners and welcome Alex Foster of Ward Goodman Financial Services and Paul Clarke of Hallmark Hotels as Dorset Chamber Ambassadors. We also recently welcomed Simon Boys of ReidSteel to our Board and Nicky Buust of HSBC joins our Board at our next meeting. We are going to be working closely with Dorset LEP on the consultation for the Local Industrial Strategy for Dorset. This is an important opportunity for Dorset businesses to have their input into the consultation on issues such as infrastructure, connectivity and skills and I urge all businesses to get involved. You can see more on the LEP website.

The Business Gateway service, funded by the Dorset LEP and delivered by Dorset Chamber, continues to perform a vital role in helping businesses find support and advice from both the public and private sector. If you need help around issue such as finance, people issues, marketing or IP, don’t hesitate to contact the Gateway. The support is free and you don’t need to be a Chamber member to access the service. I’m delighted to announce that after effectively re-branding and re-positioning Dorset Chamber over the last five years, the Chamber Board have agreed to the development of a new logo for Dorset Chamber. The new logo will reflect the modern, fresh and innovative Chamber we seek to be and we believe it is almost the final piece in our re-brand over the last few years. Finally I’d like to pay tribute to Robert Braithwaite, co-founder of Sunseeker and Bill Riddle, Vice President and Chairman of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, both of whom recently passed away. Robert was a truly visionary entrepreneur, building his first boat under the name

We now have two unitary authorities for the county, Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. We believe this is a big step forward in terms of improving resource efficiency and strategic planning.

of Poole Powerboats, a business that would become Sunseeker, the iconic luxury yacht manufacturer based here in Poole. Bill Riddle made a tremendous contribution to the local business community through his role at Bournemouth Chamber as well as his position of Operations Manager at Castlepoint and was well-known and highly respected in the business community. Both Robert and Bill will be deeply missed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if you have any thoughts or ideas around supporting Dorset businesses you’d like to discuss.

Dorset LEP’s Annual Business Conference Following the success of last year’s event, Dorset LEP will be hosting its annual business conference on Friday 24 May, 8.30am-12.30pm at Bournemouth University. The conference, expected to attract a significant number of local businesses and influencers, will examine the county’s economic outlook, issues, challenges and priorities for growth and productivity with a key focus on the development of Dorset’s LIS.

BCC comments on inflation figures

C

ommenting on the inflation statistics for February 2019, published today by the Office for National Statistics, Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “Inflation picked-up for the first time since August 2018, with rising prices across a range of items including food and alcohol, placing the largest upward pressure on price growth in February. “Inflation is likely to drift higher in the coming months as the expected increase in Ofgem’s energy price cap in April enters the calculation. Businesses also continue to report that the cost of imported raw materials are rising. As these high input costs filter through supply chains, they could increase the upward pressure on consumer prices in the short-term. “Overall, the UK’s weakening economic outlook is likely to ensure that any increase in consumer prices would be largely transitory, and inflation is expected to remain close to the Bank of England’s 2% target for some time to come. “With the current trajectory for inflation largely benign, there remains sufficient scope to keep interest rates on hold through this year, particularly against a backdrop of increasing anxiety over Brexit and slowing economic growth. “The overriding priority must be for parliament to avoid a messy and disorderly departure from the EU, which would likely drive a marked drop in sterling and could significantly increase inflation and the cost pressure on businesses and consumers.” Dorset’s leading business support organisation has strengthened its board with a high calibre appointment from one of the county’s most successful exporters. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Sam, who has significant experience within the automotive industry, is optimistic about the levels of new business for 2019: “This area’s businesses have shown themselves to be very innovative, with an abundance of successful digital and new media companies, supporting the well-known players within financial services, aviation and the university.” Sam explained: “There is a synergy between the ethos of these businesses, the technology found in every Audi and the high level of customer service we look to offer locally at Poole Audi. Whilst our in-house beauty salon, gym and drive-in servicing are indicative of the innovation we have brought to the sector, our long-standing business partnerships are testament to our commitment in fully supporting local companies.” Following the arrivals of the all-new A1 supermini and Q3 compact SUV, Poole Audi will welcome 19 new Audi models to market this year, including plug-in hybrid and electric variants. Theses lower emission models will benefit both the environment and the tax paid by businesses and company car drivers. Sam continued: “Our new electric models will match exceptional performance with suitability for everyday use. Not only that, but they will be highly attractive due to lower taxation. The e-tron SUV will cost a higher-rate tax payer just £48 per month in benefit-in-kind from April 2020, compared to

£500-£600 per month for a similarly sized, diesel-powered premium SUV with a list price around £40,000.” Sam’s strategy for 2019 is simple, to contact every medium and large company in the area, along with a significant number of smaller businesses: “We have a team of specialists who are looking to reach out to all local businesses and start a dialogue. With the wide range of products we have available, we can cater for virtually all requirements and our local business package makes these a strong financial proposition too. I want to really get the Poole Audi business team on the front foot and I am looking forward to meeting these local businesses, either at the showroom or at their premises.” Poole Audi was established in 2000 and employs 116 members of staff working out of its state-of-the-art Old Wareham Road showroom and workshops, and it is one of the largest Audi centres in Europe. Sam Cadwell is the company’s new Fleet Sales Manager.

A Visible Reminder To Switch From Oil And Gas

Some weeks ago, an oil rig arrived in Bournemouth bay and anchored 4 miles offshore, exactly where everyone in the area could see it. The reason it’s there is to test an area of the sea bed for oil and gas reserves. The permanent onshore extraction facility in Poole Harbour will drill horizontally into the deposits and pump it ashore. The rig itself has now disappeared, towed to its next project. Extracting oil and gas nearly always happens out of sight. This very visible presence of an oil rig – easily seen from our iSupply Energy office on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth - is a stark reminder of our continued reliance on fossil fuels. It’s not possible to stop using fossil fuels overnight. However, we must hasten the day that we can lead lives that don’t require fossil fuels to be burnt. The good news is that the UK’s carbon emissions have been driven down by 38 per cent since 1990. That’s the fastest decline of any developed country in the world. iSupply Energy are part of that success story. Our company mission is ‘Enabling fossil fuel free living within a generation’. Over the last ten years, the company we’re part of, Vattenfall, has invested £4bn in building renewable energy generation infrastructure and we supply 100% renewable electricity plans to homes around Britain. Anyone taking an energy plan with us is contributing to investment in a renewable future. iSupply Energy offers cheap gas, electricity and dual fuel tariffs www.isupplyenergy.co.uk 17

OBITUARY

Robert Braithwaite CBE DL 1943-2019

Robert Braithwaite, one of the founders of Sunseeker International, a true entrepreneur and pioneer of the leisure marine industry, passed away in Dorset on 7th March having recently fought Alzheimer's. He was 75 years old.

R

obert was born in Hinkley, Leicestershire in May 1943 to Idris and Sybil Braithwaite and the middle child of three boys. His interest in boating was sparked by the family’s early holidays to Windermere in the Lake District where they owned a dinghy fitted with a little outboard motor. Growing up, his parents ran a successful drapery business in Otley, Yorkshire but it was Robert’s frequent ill health as a child that persuaded them to move nearer to the south coast in the late 1950s. Robert stated in later years that it was “funny how my sickness helped to make me successful”. Without that turn of events, it’s highly likely there would have never been a Sunseeker. Soon after moving, Robert’s father bought a 12-foot Tod dinghy from local businessman John Macklin who’d just started selling boats. The little Tod transformed Robert’s life. He’d never been on the open sea before and loved it. He just lived for boats and his health improved, so clearly the sea air was doing him some good. Robert’s father was also enjoying the sea and, eyeing a new opportunity went into business with Macklin in 1960. That was the beginning of Friar’s Cliff Marine, a small boat sales operation selling several foreign brands including Owens cruisers from the USA. Idris asked whether Robert could join and that is how the boat business became his life from the age of about 16. Initially, Robert worked as an engineer on outboard motors but

when the Owens brand ceased operations in Europe, Robert proposed that the company should not only sell other brands but start building their own boats to be in control of their destiny. With his partners support, Robert bought an Owens mould for a sporty 17 foot boat, the ‘Sovereign’, which was initially produced with the help of a small local company used to working in fibreglass called M. J. Fry; and so the boat building business began. In 1969, when boat production in-house became too big for the Friars Cliff premises the company moved to a waterside location in Poole and was re-named Poole Powerboats. By this time John Braithwaite, Robert’s boatmad younger brother had also joined the company and went on to become the company’s Design Director, retiring only last year. Boat production was ramped up with 20ft and 23ft models initially launched whilst every year brought new, larger, more exciting designs

suited to warmer Mediterranean boating. Innovations were legendary including race-derived hulls, the latest propulsion systems and on-board tender garages whilst cutting-edge design, incredible boat show exposure, novel marketing campaigns and a total focus on quality and customer service delivered ever-growing sales to a discerning clientele. Sales dealerships began to be appointed around Europe and in 1985, Poole Powerboats was renamed ‘Sunseeker International’ giving rise to the now iconic brand. The Sunseeker name also attracted EON Productions, producers of the Bond movies and Sunseeker boat models have starred in several iconic films, with Robert himself taking a cameo role in 2008 as James Bond’s boat driver in Quantum of Solace. As its Managing Director, the company grew from strength to strength, driven by his daring entrepreneurial spirit, eventually being sold to Dalian Wanda Group in 2013 and allowing Robert to take a more ambassadorial role that he relished. From humble beginnings, Sunseeker now employs c.2,600 people, building boats, yachts and super yachts from 38 to 161 feet; sold through a network of 120 sales and service locations in 74 countries. Over the decades that Sunseeker have been designing and building their distinctive craft, they have evolved from being a brand into a true icon. To own a Sunseeker has become an aspiration for many and an obsession to some; buying into a brand that makes the ultimate lifestyle statement. When only the best will do

in luxury and performance, Sunseeker provides it - via a worldwide network of approved Sunseeker distributors. Today, this extensive family of retail offices spans the globe, bringing immediacy of service to a world-class brand - a brand driven by the pursuit of perfection. Robert not only held the position of Chairman of the British Marine Federation on three occasions, he was made a ‘Freeman of the City of London’ by the The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights and was Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset. He was also awarded an MBE and later a CBE in recognition of his contribution to the marine industry, not to mention numerous Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for the wider business. He always shared his success and was a generous philanthropist, notably donating a vital new £3.5million da Vinci robot to Poole Hospital to support advanced keyhole surgery for cancer patients; the only hospital in the country, and one of only a handful in Europe, with access to such pioneering technology. Robert’s contribution to the marine industry globally was pivotal. He was inspirational to anyone who met him, recognised as a pioneer, a maverick, a true visionary; he changed the face of boating forever. Famously, Robert is quoted as saying: “When I was young I was told it was impossible to have a career in boats. I guess I proved them wrong.” As well as his loyal employees, Sunseeker dealers, clients and close friends, in Robert’s words “the Sunseeker family”, Robert leaves two daughters and four grandchildren.

Nightmare On Recruitment Street! Mock Employment Tribunal Launches New HR Forum Courtroom drama came to Dorset when a mock employment tribunal was staged at Bournemouth & Poole College.

E

llis Jones Solicitors organised the ‘trial’ as part of a new Poole HR (Human Resources) Forum. The mock tribunal centred on an imaginary case and featured specialist barristers from 3PB, one of the UK's oldest and fourth largest chambers. It aimed to give a practical insight into the tribunal process and the law surrounding unfair dismissal. The audience included several HR management students from the college as well as HR professionals and also representatives from Ellis Jones and Rubicon. Kate Brooks, Partner, Solicitor and Head of Employment/HR Services at Ellis Jones, conducted the mock tribunal together with a specialist barrister. Kate said: “It allowed us to show examples of the documents that you can expect to see in a real-life tribunal as well as describe the steps needed to prepare for tribunal. It also gave an insight into how an employment tribunal is conducted, including the cross examination of a witness. “Mock events like this are a great way for people to see at first-hand the workings of an employment tribunal without actually being involved in the real thing.” Amy Edwards, a college HR student who works for Ellis Jones, acted as the claimant bringing the case for unfair dismissal. She said: “It was really insightful to see the correct process of a tribunal and how the barristers interpreted the case and tried to convince the judge of their arguments with in-depth questions. “The mock tribunal highlighted how not to conduct a disciplinary procedure and what happens if an employer gets their process wrong.” College lecturer Marion Atherton, who oversaw the event and teaches Human management, said: “We were delighted that Ellis Jones were able to visit the College and share their vast experience with our students. “Employment law is a vital part of our HR courses. This event represented an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about how unfair dismissal cases play out in the courtroom.” The new Poole HR Forum will meet every quarter and allow HR professionals to explore and discuss topics of interest. Each session will showcase a guest speaker discussing a topical HR, business or recruitment issue followed by the opportunity to network with peers and share advice and best practice. Yes, this is a dramatic headline designed to catch your eye, but it pretty much sums up the recruitment market at the moment. Helen Stacey founder of Aspire Jobs urges employers to REALLY sit up and take notice. The race is on, and employers who are slow to change their thinking and their processes are missing out. In recruitment terms, things have changed, considerably in recent times and it’s getting harder! We’ve been talking about a ‘candidate driven market’ for the last few years, but the message is slow to get through to employers. Or, perhaps it’s the understanding of what it means that is missing. Unemployment is at a record low across the UK but particularly in the South – job opportunities are high – meaning that candidates can pick and choose the best opportunities – they are in the driving seat. So, it is up to employers to be the most attractive they can be. Not only in terms of their offer and package, but also in terms of their processes; right from the outset of advertising a job, through to making that all important job offer. In January 2019 there were a record 24 million full time jobs advertised in the UK and only 1.37 million unemployed – this is 68,000 less people than a year ago. Smarten up the interview process So, in this article, we’re identifying areas within the interview process where we think employers need to smarten up their thinking; Ok, so we’ve leapt over several stages of the recruitment process to get to this point, but let’s just assume for now that all the hard work of writing a great JD, advertising, screening, sifting and shortlisting has been done and et voila here we are with a list of candidates ready and waiting for an interview… (if only it were that easy!) Our advice for employers when it comes to planning their interview process is this… Identify your real business needs, determine what meeting those needs successfully, actually looks like. Avoid wasting time with lengthy processes that are unnecessarily time consuming – candidates will not stick around for this. Someone else is likely to be putting them through a far slicker process, that is more attractive and less time consuming. Speed and professionalism are critical here. Don’t throw in a surprise; be transparent about the process they will go through up front, so they can choose to enter the process or not. Your job is not to trick them to see if they can take it, your job is to identify if this person is the right fit for your business. Think about your business culture, your interview process should mirror it completely, so the candidate is buying into a true presentation, not a false start. Research your candidate – you expect them to do the same about your company, so it’s pertinent for you to do the same with them. Spend time with their CV, follow their career path and read between the lines. View their LinkedIn profiles - do their values and interests align with your company’s? Know as much as possible ahead of time, this shows due diligence, but also allows you to have a great conversation at interview with someone that you barely know. Employers who are flexible and accommodating to the availability of the candidate have more success that those who aren’t. Rigidity in terms

of interview days and times restricts your pool of available talent. Remember this candidate is probably already in a job role, so will find it tricky to get time off at short notice. Consider before and after hours interviews to widen your audience. Structured questions are essential, it’s reasonable to assume you will use a set of specific questions for each candidate you will see, however, the best interviewers listen hard to answers, and pick up markers for further probing questions. So, be prepared to go a little off piste. A long list of tedious questions can switch an applicant off. Make the interview a conversation, not an examination. The interview is about them not you, keep the conversation 90% them, 10% you (less if you can manage it). Be clear about next steps in the process, when and how long any next stage interview will take place and what will be expected. Tell them in advance if tests are required, don’t surprise candidates with this on the day. Follow up with every candidate, failing to do so is rude and unprofessional. Candidates won’t complain to you about this, but they will complain about you to others. This has a negative effect on your brand reputation. To summarise, candidates want employers to be authentic, to show integrity and to be completely transparent. An efficient process is an absolute must (employers must speed up the process), with personal and functional communication (make sure your online processes are slick and not onerous). A recent Hays report shows these interesting statistics: • Cumulatively, 71% of applicants would consider abandoning their application if the process took longer than 15 minutes. Employers on and offline processes are too long, deterring candidates from completing their applications • Applicants rate editing and submitting their CV as 90% important whereas employers’ rate this at only 41% • 63% of candidates say the people and culture of an organisation is the single most important consideration when deciding whether to apply or not • 61% of applicants have been discouraged from applying to a job after reading negative reviews online Poorly organised interviews is the reason for a low satisfaction rating at the decision stage. 25

ESET Awarded PC Mag’s Reader’s Choice Award For Security Suites When it comes to cyber security, users need to be safe in the knowledge that all their devices – from their laptops to their phones and their wearables – are properly protected from the growing number of attackers looking to exploit potential weak points.

T

hat’s why we are thrilled to say readers of PC Mag have recognised ESET’s consumer facing offerings as “everything you need in a security suite.” ESET received the highest ratings from PC Mag survey respondents in a number of categories, including overall satisfaction (9.3) and likelihood to recommend (9.4). In fact, “no other company was rated as highly or recommended more enthusiastically than ESET”, reports PC Mag. This is, in part, due to the fact that ESET products do not slow systems down and respondents reported that they barely needed any further support once the suite was installed. ESET also received the highest rating among all suites for trust (9.3). This high level of trust that a security solution will be able to thwart potential risks has never been more important at a time when ransomware attacks 28

and phishing scams, for example, are at an all-time high. Commenting on the ESET suite, one respondent commented saying: “It is the best security suite I have ever used. Requirements are minimal, it scans fast, catches anything trying to sneak in.” The Reader’s Choice Award is further testament to ESET’s commitment to develop and offer security solutions that enable everyone to enjoy safer technology – no matter where they are or which device they are using. It follows reviews from Which? last month, whereby ESET Internet Security and ESET Cyber Security Pro for Mac, were tested and awarded Which? Best Buy endorsements. In its review, Which? compared the product’s performance and it’s specification against exacting criteria. It also assessed whether the expectations of consumers are met when using the product. Only the topscoring products in the market are recognised as a Which? Best Buy, indicating ESET products’ high degree of excellence. /company/dorset-chamber/

This years’ Innovation In Learning Award Saw Vocational College, Bluestone College, Take Silver Against Santander And EDF Energy For Their Efforts In Innovative Learning

Aetha Design Move To New Studio In Poole Quay Product Design Studio Aetha Design has overhauled Unit G’s distinctive industrial space in Poole’s West Quay to create their new design studio and workshop. Aetha Design – the Product Design Consultancy founded by Tom Parsons in 2018 has taken over 1,000 square feet of the industrial former boat yard which stretches right back to the harbour water’s edge in Poole Quay. Formerly a boat and marine yard, the area boasts a creative hub of engineers, designers and artists and was featured in the popular BBC television series Harbour Lives with Ben Fogle. The renovation focused on making the interior feel more like a design studio with separate office space for the team and a meeting space which leads into the workshop where the product designers have created a functional space consisting of 3D printers, tools and equipment that enables the team to work simultaneously on a variety of client projects. “The character of the area, being able to see the sea and watching the RNLI train on their lifeboats from our studio window while having a cup of tea, the vast degree of space we have here relative to our small team made the unit attractive for us when looking for a new studio space,” said Tom. “It has an extraordinary feel about it and it’s also super functional in terms of being able to have the workshop separate to our desk space.” “We wanted to respect what was still here but also include our grey and simple modernist layout,” he told Dorset Business. The Unit occupies a site on West Quay Road right in between the old and new bridges. The team can cycle, run or even paddle board to the new office, which suits them since they are all local and live within 5 miles from Poole Quay. The team have designed, built or made almost everything in the office space including the workshop desk layout and kitchen. “The challenge was to make the space suit us as a team as well as being a functional work space,” said Tom. “Every area has been thought about, as we wanted to ensure all the team are happy, which included the office dog.” Aetha Design is a full service product design consultancy made up of designers from Dyson with experience in consumer electronics, marine, beauty, homeware and lighting to name a few. They have also worked with a number of local businesses that match their values including Never Let Go (NLG) and The Memory Booth Company. They are hoping to grow their team within the next year and as Tom is a Bournemouth University Alumni they will probably look to recruit their team locally too. “I always knew we wanted to come back to Poole after leaving Bournemouth University. My wife and I met at university so we love it here. We hope that the business can grow and develop not only on a local level but also internationally. It is an exciting time for us, that is for sure!” more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

The Learning Awards 2019 saw hundreds of entrants from around the globe competing for 15 awards categories. Leading global brands were pitched alongside first-time submissions from emerging companies, all competing to win one of the prestigious awards. The judges presented Bluestone College the Silver award for their innovative learning methods. Founded in 2017, Bluestone College has grown rapidly, providing vocational training for school leavers to those in their 60s in three core subjects – personal training, sports massage therapy and exercise referral. Bluestone College was entered for the Innovation in Learning Award. Trading for only 2 years, Bluestone was pitched against leading global brands such as EDF Energy and Santander. This award was open to any organisation that can demonstrate a unique and innovative contribution to the delivery of learning. Among other factors, judges were looking for organisations using new and ground-breaking ways to engage with learners, stimulate the creation of knowledge and integrate learning and work. Bluestone stood out from the other entrants due to the innovative way that their courses are delivered. Unlike many of their competitors, their bespoke courses, which are Ofqual-approved and YMCA-accredited, are delivered on-site in tutor-led, face-to-face small groups, run over 16 weeks with intensive full-day learning. Students also have access to state-of-the-art facilities thanks to Bluestone’s partnership with The Village Hotel Group. Joe Turner, Founder and CEO of Bluestone College, said: “It was a fantastic evening, and to be sat next to a college from America and a University from Australia was an honour for us as we only established Bluestone College just two years ago from our sofa! We’ve come such a long way in just two years – so to pick up an award such as this is just unbelievable.” Jim Bryant, Head of Education at Bluestone College, said: “This is a very proud moment for Bluestone College. For our hard work to be recognised within the industry is a big achievement, especially as Bluestone was only founded in 2017. Coming up against such established brands is flattering for a budding company like us. We look forward to continuing our innovative learning methods.” The Learning Awards were held at the world-renowned Dorchester Hotel in London, which was hosted by TV star, Claudia Winkleman. Attended by over 450 industry guests and finalists, the Awards were live-streamed across the globe. For more information on Bluestone College, visit bluestone.ac.uk

Let There Be Light.... Especially in these dark winter months, creating light in your home is essential says Charlotte Cox fitted furniture specialists of Custom World of Ferndown. When choosing interiors, it is important to consider how much natural light enters your room. Try not to block out or absorb any natural light but in fact enhance it as best you can through the choice of décor and furniture. Whilst there are many colours to choose from when selecting interiors, as a Designer, I always advise neutral calm tones. Splashes of colour can be added through soft furnishings and of course it is less expensive to replace when you fancy a change! In our experience, grey is still the colour of choice but this can be softened by choosing a warm cashmere tone. If you want to add darker colours then this can always be done by having a dark carcass and keeping the door and drawer fronts light. You also have the option to add lighting into our furniture. A simple strip light under a cupboard or a wall light integrated into your headboard will not just provide functional lighting, but help to create a warm and relaxing environment. And let’s not forget mirrors! Not only the perfect way to make a small space look bigger, they bounce light around the room. As they are our least expensive sliding door type it is a more affordable option than you think. For more tips come and speak to our Space Experts… www.customworldbedrooms.co.uk 33

Lauren Is Ready To Run Lauren Andrews, aged 21, from Wimborne will be running in the 39th Virgin London Marathon this April for Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities. Local girl Lauren has chosen to run the marathon in aid of the charity that supports children and adults living with disabilities because she is passionate about raising awareness of the challenges families face in rural Dorset. Lauren said: “The London Marathon has always been on my bucket list and I am very privileged to be running for Diverse Abilities. I can’t begin to understand the challenges families face when their child is born with a disability, but it’s great to know that a charity like Diverse Abilities is in the area to provide the vital support families need and give children and adults a fulfilling life, helping them to grow and develop during their lifetime.” As part of her fundraising target of £2,000 Lauren is holding various fundraising activities to reach her target and is already over 50 per cent of the way there. She recently held a bake sale where she raised £480! Lauren added: “As part of my challenge of running the marathon, I am looking forward to giving my bit back to the local community by raising, not only money, but awareness of the work Diverse Abilities do across the county. I am determined to reach both of my goals of completing the marathon in a good time and going above and beyond the fundraising target.” For those that were successful in the ballot and have their own place, you can choose to run for Diverse Abilities in the Virgin London Marathon, taking place on 28 April, and raise funds to support children and adults with disabilities in Dorset. Headway Walking Football Team Kitted Out By Coles Miller Walking football players who are overcoming brain injuries now have new kit thanks to Coles Miller Solicitors. Coles Miller has provided the new football strip for brain injury charity Headway’s walking football team in Poole. Dorset Sportsmen’s Lodge also donated £200 towards the kit. Headway is a UK-wide charity that provides vital support to brain injury survivors, their families and carers. Coles Miller Partner Adrian Cormack, a specialist brain injury solicitor, said: “People who have sustained serious head injuries need all the help that we as a community can give them. “Walking football is an excellent way for people to regain and maintain fitness, improve co-ordination, have fun and socialise. “It’s a very inclusive sport that – although often associated with older players – is suitable for all ages and abilities. “According to the rules of walking football, the ball should never go above head height. This minimises the chance of head injuries,” he added. Headway United trains at the County Ground in Blandford Close, Hamworthy. It is the headquarters of Dorset County Football Association which is keen to help make the sport more inclusive. Headway attracts around a dozen players to its training sessions. They

are all brain injury or stroke survivors. Some are referred by the NHS to help with their rehabilitation. The team is run by Headway Dorset operations manager Ade Stark and organiser Kev Tipper. Both are brain injury survivors. Mr Stark paid tribute to Coles Miller and Dorset Sportsmen’s Lodge: “We are extremely grateful for their support. “Walking football is a great opportunity for brain injury survivors to meet each other and socialise. It’s an escape – and it’s a great way to exercise,” he added. Coles Miller solicitors in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Broadstone and Wimborne help people who have suffered through personal injury or clinical negligence to claim compensation (‘no win no fee’) to fund their treatment and care. Eazy Move For Ferndown Company A local company offering a range of horticultural services has seen such a massive demand in business over the last nine months that it has had to relocate to new premises. Eazy Garden, founded by Tom Clark in 2013, has recently moved into spacious accommodation on the first floor of Dana House in Spinneys Lane, Ferndown. Tom had previously worked out of an office at home with his wife and co-director Gemma. He said, “I started as a one man band, but when the business really took off last year, it became impractical to work from home. I had to take on an assistant, more team leaders and team members to cope with the additional work.” He also found it increasingly difficult to draw the divide line between work and home life. The new office, he says has plenty of scope for further expansion especially as new contracts are taking his business further afield. “The demand for grounds maintenance and 36

Greendale Get Proactive With Mental Health

F

ifteen employees at Dorset Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, have attended a mental health awareness course, with five staff also completing a mental health first aid course, in-line with the Company’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness of mental health in an industry where workers are three times more likely to commit suicide than the average UK male. Additionally, the Poole-based Company has introduced the ‘midday mile,’ where all staff are encouraged to join together daily for a walk around the surrounding area in a bid to promote good health and mental wellbeing, giving staff a break away from their desks, some fresh air and the chance to socialise with colleagues.

Maria Seabright, HR and finance director at Greendale Construction, explained: “Sadly, the UK construction industry sees more workers die by suicide than by falls. The challenging lifestyle which can involve long, demanding hours, and for some, weeks away from home whilst on-site, undoubtedly creates the stressful factors which contribute to poor mental health. In a workforce that is still predominantly male, specific risks associated with male mental health also need to be considered. Asking for help and opening up about emotions are just not things that come naturally to many of those working in the industry, and the combination of these factors results in many suffering in silence. “One in six of us has a mental health problem such as stress, anxiety or depression, yet one in five fear that disclosure could cost them their

job. According to the Centre for Mental Health, 91 million days are lost each year due to mental health problems. We, as employers, have a duty of care to ensure the wellbeing of our staff. We all have mental health just as we have physical health, and both have their ups and downs. A minor health problem one day could be a major issue the next. “Construction thrives on change and teamwork, and at Greendale we want to embrace an environment where our managers understand their roles and responsibilities when it comes to dealing with mental wellbeing. By attending these courses, we believe that our managers will be much more aware of any issues

that may arise regarding mental health within their teams and the people they manage. “We, as an organisation, want to promote positive mental wellbeing. This is incredibly important for us and we have therefore introduced the ‘midday mile,' where all staff are encouraged to join together daily for a walk around the surrounding area. This promotes good health and mental well-being, giving staff a break away from their desks, a bit of fresh air, and socialising with colleagues. This is an initiative that we learnt from Ouch Training Team after staff recently attended a Mental Health Awareness Course - something we would highly recommend to everyone.”

The Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership’s Bid Writing Support Service As part of the Dorset Gateway Business Support Service, the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP) Bid Writing Support Service is fully funded and aims to help highpotential or high-growth organisations to apply for funding, in line with the challenges set out in Dorset's Strategic Plan and the UK's modern Industrial Strategy.

Can you help any business with any application? The LEP’s Bid Writing Support Service can support any Dorset-based business that wants to compete for an eligible grant competition to scale-up their commercial offer and increase their productivity. What sort of applications does the service support? The Bid Writing Support Service can provide bid support for Dorset projects that are in line with the UK's modern Industrial Strategy and local priority areas for business growth. This tends to mean that any grant competition run by Innovate UK will be a good fit for our support. Other funders will also be acceptable too and can be reviewed on a case-bycase basis. What levels of support do you offer? What is the eligibility criteria for the support to be agreed? Up to 40 hours of support is available and the terms and conditions of using the service are set out on the Dorset LEP website’s Business Support pages. 40

There is a simple triage process to help us decide which companies to support and to help us best manage the finite capacity of the service. The Dorset Gateway service can also check your bid. This is a comprehensive application checking service to help ensure that the application you have written meets a funder's criteria and make suggestions about how you might strengthen it. Can the service improve a company's chance of winning grant funding? Dorset Gateway’s Bid Writer, Kevin Brooks, has a wealth of experience and a very good track record of success in helping companies and other organisations win funding. Statistics show that application numbers for Dorset Businesses are currently the lowest in the South West region, with only 7% of Innovate UK funding coming to Dorset. However, a fully funded Bid Writing Support Service aims to provide Dorset businesses with the expert support they need to increase the numbers of businesses applying for grant competitions and /company/dorset-chamber/

improve their chances of winning when they do. The Government has pledged £4.7bn of Innovate UK funding over a four year period and the Dorset Gateway wants to help the wealth of brilliant businesses in county access this funding. The DLEP’s Bid Writing Support Service has directly contacted over 200 Dorset companies and has conducted a series of outreach events to Dorset businesses on how to maximise their chances when applying for grant funding. Having supported several applications already, it is currently supporting four Innovate UK bids with a number of other proposals in the pipeline. Interested in finding out more? Spring Clean Your Business

V

iewers of Marie Kondo’s cleaning show on Netflix will already be in the grip of clean-fever. However, if you’ve not yet caught the bug, and with the days lengthening and tax returns receding in the rear-view mirror, there is no better time to blow out the cobwebs and springclean your business. If you are motivated to improve your business but struggle to find the time to step back and objectively review how things are going, there can be no better time to take on the support of a business mentor who has the experience to support you. Chamber member Dorset Business Mentoring offers owners of businesses of all structures, types and sectors 1:1 mentoring as well as a programme of skills development workshops. Developed through a partnership of private and public organisations this notfor-profit programme is funded to maximise accessibility. As one of the longest established and experienced mentoring programmes in the country, benefitting from 114 high-calibre mentors representing a vast scope of expertise in all sectors, the ability to match the needs of the business owner with the skill of the mentor is proven to be highly effective. “One of the first steps in the mentoring relationship is a holistic business review, presenting the golden opportunity to highlight areas to prioritise for a ‘Spring clean’. Dorset Business Mentor Andrew Brett has a strong track record in this area, having been helping businesses through Dorset Business Mentoring (Dormen) since 2010. We caught up with him to find out how he’ll be getting his clients ship-shape this Spring. ‘One of the many joys of being involved with Dormen is that I’ve been privileged to work with some really interesting and diverse businesses, and meet some fascinating people. One thing I try to impress on all of them is the value of outline routines and structures. A bit of attention in some key areas can bring real rewards. And like all chores, there is real satisfaction to be got from having completed them.” Here are some examples of the questions a mentor will typically work through: Company Dashboard – you’ve completed your tax return, but what did you learn? Take a look at your profit and loss report and balance sheet, what patterns can you see against previous years? Are there any emerging risks or issues that need attention? And where do you think you’ll be the same time next year? People – what are your top 3 challenges here? Will you be scaling up or scaling down? Are staff performing? Is staff morale high or low? What can be done? Are you up to date with current regulations? Customers – who are your potential and pending customers? How many more or what type do you need to deliver your strategy? And what will you do more and less of: what lessons have you learned from satisfied and dissatisfied customers? Strategy – where are you aiming and what’s your roadmap for getting there? What challenges and opportunities are on the horizon? And where are you exposed or weak and what are you going to do about it? Communications – people groan but this is the glue that binds a business together. How are you getting your message across, within and without the company? Are you choosing the right platforms for the right things? What’s working and what’s not? If you are interested to learn more Dorset Business Mentors are holding an exclusive event for Chamber Members in May. Members will have an opportunity to learn about the service, how a mentor could benefit their individual needs and have half an hour 1:1 with a matched mentor to discuss how they help. Members will be required to pre-register for a strictly limited number of places. If you’d like to talk to one of the team at Dorset Business Mentoring about working with a mentor in the meantime, please call the team on 01202 607 530. 44

The team went above and beyond adapting our structures to fulfil the needs of the client and to be on site for both festivals. The festival environment brings with it certain challenges and our team handled each one perfectly, which is exactly why the client has re-contracted us for 2019.” This was the first time Innovative Hire have worked together with Brand Events and Chris Evans on an event and their hope is this will now lead to work on their other festivals and events throughout the year. Having recently expanded the Pub in the Park festival to multiple sites, Innovative Hire feel it is the

perfect time to be winning contracts with the festival owners. Their range of event furniture, bars, structures and theming fits perfectly into this environment. Their White Box Structure was the key to winning the initial contract, which was used as a VIP area for the celebs at CarFest 2019. Comprised of 2 x 20ft converted shipping containers, which have hydraulic arms that open up a side of each container to create a second floor, it really is a stand-out structure. Available to book throughout the year, it is an ideal structure that can be installed quickly, will make an impression and its versatility means it can be used for a range of events. The entire range of event furniture, bars, structures, theming and props for any event are available to hire year-round and whilst the majority of events traditionally happen in the summer months, the collection is available to hire throughout the year. Our Head Of Business Engagement Steve Bulley Drives The Volkswagen e-Golf Tubeway Army sang ‘Are Friends Electric?’, in 1979, who would have imagined then that 40 years later we would be embracing fully electric cars? We hear a lot about hybrids but the pure electric market is somewhat quieter and in many cases, you have to settle for a space-age design. Not so with the Volkswagen e-Golf, it looks like any other from the Golf range and during my time with the car, it drives like any other Golf, just quieter. Inside it looks like any other Golf too; hopefully you are seeing the theme here. Under the outgoing NEDC testing regime, the e-Golf has an official range of 186 miles, with Volkswagen saying that translates to a real-world distance of 124 miles. For me, I quickly

learnt that you must adapt your driving style to get the best range. Driving without over accelerating, I managed a trip from the Chamber offices to Bournemouth and back and I used 2 miles worth of electricity. However, on the Upton Bypass doing the speed limit the battery was less kind. Overall, the real-world range is over the 100-mile mark, more than adequate for a local commute or town driving. The one area that really shocked me was the acceleration, it is instant, more Golf GTI than e-Golf. The ride is pure Golf and you are not making any sacrifices on space. There is little to mark down on this pure electric car. Where the technology is evolving is charging. The e-Golf will charge to 80% in just 45 minutes making a longer distance journey realistic providing there is a charger free and working. This is the second big anxiety with pure electric vehicles and an area where commonality of use and an increased number of charging points is required. So, would I buy one?… No, but only because I’d lease one. With advances in technology in three

years’ time the range will be higher, charging time shorter so owning one doesn’t make sense to me. With leases from around £320 per month for business users (+VAT) and a benefit in kind of 13% you could be paying as little as £72 per month in company car tax. Now that is attractive. Overall, I was impressed with the feel of the e-Golf and not having to compromise on the look of the iconic car is a bonus, add in some wheel spin and all in all I had a fun few days. I’d recommend any doubters to give an e-Golf a drive, you will be impressed.

PHC Support Vendee Globe Racer Pip Hare Poole Harbour Commissioners support Vendee Globe racer Pip Hare Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) is supporting Vendee Globe competitor, Pip Hare. The successful sailor and marine journalist, who hails from Poole, will be lining up in November 2020, along with 30 international skippers to single-handedly race her 60ft boat around the world, non-stop. The race will take in the three great capes; the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn. The course record for the race, which first took place in 1989, is 78 days. In 2001 Dame Ellen MacArthur came second in 94 days but no Brit has ever won the title. Kerrie Gray, Poole Harbour Commissioners Marinas Manager advised, “We are incredibly proud to be supporting Pip. We have given her a berth for her boat in the lead-up and preparations for this prestigious race and we are delighted that she has chosen to stay with us. We are keen to help her with her fundraising and introduce her to key partners in the area in order to enable her to seek out the necessary support and financial assistance that she needs. She has ambitious plans to break records and certainly has the determination and grit to do so!” more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Pip enthused, “Poole Harbour is an incredible place to be based with my Vendee Globe Campaign and I am really delighted to be working in partnership with Poole Harbour Commissioners. Poole has everything the sailor could possibly need, it is full of natural beauty, sheltered, has great and diverse marina facilities, a comprehensive range of local business to support every sailing need and for me, it’s just a short hop out of the harbour into the open waters of Poole Bay where I can really let my 60ft boat go. “There are not many ports in the UK that could cater for the needs of this elite racing campaign and having this on my doorstep is a privilege.” Kerrie concluded, “We are delighted that Pip will be joining us and officially opening the Poole Harbour Boat Show which takes place from Friday 7th – Sunday 9th June. At Poole Harbour Commissioners we would like to wish Pip and her team all the best in her mission to prepare for The Vendee Globe." Chamber Members Join Forces To Launch New Website! February saw Digital Storm, long term Platinum business partners of the Dorset Chamber launch a new website for recently joined chamber members, Utility Point, a national utilities provider based in Poole.

U

tility Point is the energy company that rewards efficiency and loyalty and is committed to creating long-term sustainable value for everyone connected to their business. In order to fulfil this ambition, Utility Point understood that they needed to improve their current website offering and appointed Digital Storm to embark on the project. Utility Point found Digital Storm via recommendation through the Dorset Chamber from our very own, Head of Engagement, Steve Bulley.

The new website features a striking, modern and creative design and seeks to improve the customer experience through clear layouts and navigation. The clear UX focused design makes it easy for potential and existing customers to find the information that they are looking for quickly and efficiently and the improved content educates customers to make informed decisions. The website was developed using Wordpress as Utility Point required a site that used a content management system which would allow them to edit and maintain it themselves.

“We are pleased to have worked with Digital Storm as a creative partner for graphic design, website design and development. From the start they understood the needs of our business and our customer-focused approach. Using their experience and expertise we have together created a functional and attention-grabbing design that gives our customers a great user experience,” said Mark Harris, Head of Business Development at Utility Point. Utility Point has also chosen to embark on a marketing strategy with Digital Storm which began in March along with contracting them for

Project Promotes ‘Natural Sparkle’ For People In Dorset

D

orset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has launched an exciting new health and wellbeing project, ‘Natural Sparkle’. Supported by Southern Co-op, the project aims to provide a suite of nature-based activities that benefit both physical and mental wellbeing for local people and that will also help wildlife in the area. The project was launched last week at DWT’s Happy Bottom nature reserve in east Dorset, where volunteers from Southern Co-op

joined DWT volunteers to re-seed the community orchard with wildflowers. Volunteers were also taken on nature walks around the Corfe Barrow Nature park. Activities which are organised through the project will become part of Natural Choices* – a programme of nature-based activities from over 20 providers across Dorset - which is led by the Dorset Local Nature Partnership (LNP). The LNP is working with Dorset’s health services to raise the profile of the benefits of nature on our health and wellbeing.

By working in partnership through the Dorset LNP, the aim is to embed the wellbeing opportunities into the Dorset health system through health and social care professionals such as nurses and GPs. But these activities will benefit anyone wanting to have a healthy lifestyle and to help local wildlife at the same time.” The generous funding from Southern Co-op has also unlocked further funding for projects to link up Natural Sparkle’s activities in nature reserves and community green spaces, increasing the reach of the

project hugely in the first 2 years of delivery as a tool to prevent ill health, and support recovery through nature. Gemma Lacey, Southern Coop’s Director of Sustainability and Communications, said: “The work carried out by our Wildlife Trusts is absolutely incredible and gives people an opportunity to connect with our natural world. This project will bring a variety of positive impacts improving people’s health and wellbeing whilst also benefitting nature. “Being a regional, independent co-operative, improving our local communities is incredibly important to us and this is an exciting move forward in our commitment to securing a more sustainable future for everybody.” To find out more about Natural Choices activities on offer, visit www.livewelldorset.co.uk. 47

Children Are Developing More Skills Than Ever At An Indoor ‘Skills For Life’ Village Thanks To A New Shop On The Block Visitors to the SafeWise project in Bournemouth can now pop into a Southern Co-op retail shop as part of the larger complex which includes roads and buildings to give children the ability to learn vital life skills. The Co-operative Food store, which comes complete with packaging and a community notice board, will teach youngsters about shopping and eating healthily. Year 2 children from Talbot Heath Junior School in Bournemouth were the latest to see the new store and their teacher Sue Verstage said they were “lucky to have this facility so close to us”. Sue said: “The children can practise the skills that they need to learn. The volunteers are absolutely fantastic and they take their time and teach the children so much that we couldn’t possibly do in the classroom. “In the shop, they’ve learnt what is safe to eat, what is good for them to eat. They also talked about how to keep healthy with exercise. The children were allowed to go around and chose from the shelf and fill up their baskets.” The charity Safewise has just celebrated its 20th anniversary and estimates that it has delivered key Skills for Life and safety education to 250,000 children at its centres in Bournemouth and Weymouth. Gemma Lacey, Southern Co-op’s Director for Sustainability and Communications, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the SafeWise centre and only too happy to fund and fit one of our stores inside. “The centre itself is vast and we are really pleased to be able to help the charity

continue to provide skills for life for people of all ages including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.” The Bournemouth learning village provides interactive scenarios in a vast indoor village complete with road, beach, train and street scene. There are also emergency scenarios including escaping a house fire and controlling the brakes on a train. Visitors are encouraged to ‘discuss, decide and do’ in realistic scenarios designed to build confidence and develop skills to enjoy active, fulfilled and safer lives. SafeWise Chief Executive, Rob Hattersley, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Southern Co-op has brought a store to the learning village in SafeWise Bournemouth, and I would like to thank them on behalf of the charity. “The store will be invaluable as we roll out skills for life programmes to many types of visitor, especially primary school children that visit as part of our new Junior Citizen programmes.” To find out more about the site, visit www.safewise.org.

Great Results Start With Great Relationships How chamber members are working together to optimise their business When Dorset’s leading event catering business, Beales Gourmet at The Italian Villa, was looking to for improved IT infrastructure support, they used the network that they had built through DCCI and consulted IT experts Anytech Solutions. Tony Beales and his team got to know Chris Palmer and the Anytech team during the judging process of the Dorset Business Awards 2017, where Anytech were eventually crowned winners of the Outstanding Customer service category. Tony said: “When the time came for us to really ramp up our IT support and internet security, we went straight to Anytech. We had seen just how much their clients love dealing with them during the DBA judging process, and we wanted a provider who had our best IT interests at heart. Needless to say, since taking over our IT, network administration, internet security and cloud backup support, Chris and his team have impressed us with their excellent knowledge, creative troubleshooting, innovation and of course, their friendliness. They are very easy to do business with, because they took the time to understand our business and our intricate requirements. We now know that our systems are in great hands, and can focus on what we do best - delivering outstanding event catering across Dorset!” Chris Palmer added: “The Beales Gourmet are incredibly busy creating memorable events for their customers. They don’t have time to worry about the minutiae of their systems. We knew that we could add real value to their organisation by taking care of all of their IT needs and we knew that they were a forward-looking business that would embrace evolving their IT provision. We’ve already made some meaningful changes to their systems that will enable them to work smarter in the years ahead. This is what my team love to do: keep our clients protected and up to date – giving them the ability to focus squarely on what their clients love them for. As for our ongoing business relationship, we have also used Tony’s team to cater an event, so we’ve experienced their outstanding service – our businesses are somewhat of a kindred spirit when it comes to fantastic customer service – something we are both proud of.” If you want to focus on your business and leave the IT to the experts, call Anytech Solutions at 01202 460279 or visit anytechsolutions.com.

Gender Pay Gap Discussed At TeamExecutive Event Providing businesses with the tools to tackle the gender pay gap and promote women in the workplace was the aim of a round table event organised by South coast-based executive search recruiter TeamExecutive. Guest speaker was Diana Parkes, a leading authority on women in the world of work, who gave up a corporate career to help women secure equal recognition in the workplace. The round table was held at the Poole HQ of Siemens, the world’s largest engineering business, which also sponsored the event. The delegates, all senior HR professionals, heard Diana report on the findings of her annual Women’s Sat Nav to Success online, highlighting the gender pay gap. Based on meticulous research, the survey provides employers with a clear picture of what they need to do to help women progress in their careers. Diana’s corporate career progressed through global organisations including Mars, Coca Cola and Carlsberg. It was after she was twice overlooked for board positions, which went to men who had no experience and were less qualified, that she decided her path lay in fighting gender inequality. She said: “That motivated me to try to make a difference so that fewer women face these challenges. There is no reason why women can’t be as effective as men. “My mission is to enable women to realise their potential across every stage of their career, working with the realities of leadership decisionmaking.” Diana added: “We know there is a gender pay gap and now we need to shift the debate to finding the solutions. “Getting the message across about what matters most and makes the 50

most difference at events like this is vital – the HR leaders are the people with the hardest task, the practicalities of making things change.” Diana’s work in mentoring and training career women results in them securing pay rises and promotions when previously they may have not been bold enough to ask. Sponsor Siemens’ Head of Commodity Management Victoria Sargeant also addressed the event. Victoria leads Siemen’s Women @ Mobility network which aims to help the male-dominated company attract, retain and grow women in their workplace. Siemens has a programme called Male Allies, in which men lead by example in supporting their female colleagues and challenging inappropriate behaviour. Event organiser Sally Bennett, Executive Manager of TeamExecutive, said: “These round table events are an ideal way for HR leaders to come together to discuss common causes and create debate. “We’re grateful to Diana for providing an academic approach to tackling the gender pay gap, and the insight into Victoria’s best practice was extremely useful. “This was our first such event bringing Dorset business leaders together and we are looking forward to building on this foundation.” This year’s Women’s Sat Nav to Success survey has just been launched and can be accessed at womenssatnav.onlinesurveys. ac.uk/2019 For more information on TeamExecutive phone Sally Bennett on 01202 037 999.

Dorset consultant Rob Sowden of Business Cash Enabler reports a phenomenal government cashback for one of his software clients. Rob reports: “I set up the owner of this software/data analytics business 3 years ago on the HMRC Research & Development tax credit scheme and so far the business has received in excess of £250k cashback. “Many businesses and their advisors haven’t associated the R&D tax credit scheme with the digital sector, however, innovation including software development, writing APIs, algorithms, coding, Big Data analytics and app development, can all potentially meet the scheme criteria. PAYE and even costs incurred from offshore developers may qualify for cashback. “What catches many businesses out is that they believe this claim opportunity is an accountancy work-stream, resulting in low claim

values, whereas it is about technology. The service I introduced this client to required a specialist IT/software analyst to identify all of the qualifying activities permitted within legislation. “This client case is the tip of the iceberg. In the past 3 years I have been able to identify around £20m of missed qualifying expenditure that enabled businesses to benefit from this very generous government scheme. It is well worth asking for a free eligibility check, even if a business has previously benefited under the scheme, as claim values for the prior two accounting periods can often be uplifted by up to 200%, creating an unexpected and welcome cash injection to a business.” Business Cash Enabler provides a free service to companies wishing to check their eligibility under the R&D tax credit scheme. www.businesscashenabler.co.uk

Studio Shotz Celebrating Its 10th Year In Business Bournemouth-based photography business, Studio Shotz is celebrating its 10th year in business. In March 2009, Zelda de Hollander started business straight from university, trading as Studio Shotz, a high street based photographic studio in Southbourne. Zelda de Hollander gained her degree in Commercial Photography at The Arts University in Bournemouth after attending Twynham High School in Christchurch. The first half of Studio Shotz’s successful trading life was in Southbourne Grove, specialising in studio portraiture and family photo shoots. Zelda de Hollander, owner of Studio Shotz Photography, says: “I set up the high street photography studio at just 21 years old, straight after I’d graduated, and was lucky enough to stay trading on the high street for 5 years.” Research from Bloomberg, has shown that 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months and a full 80% of businesses fail in less than two years. These are staggering statistics. In 2014 Studio Shotz moved to become home-based so that the focus of the business could shift

more towards commercial work and this enabled the business to become much more flexible. Zelda says: “Being based at home, I can work the hours that people need me and am not being restricted to the usual 9 – 5 shop hours. I loved my time trading from the high street, but working from home makes more sense for progressing my business.” “I’ve have had the privilege of working with some amazing local businesses and people over the last decade, including JP Morgan, Barclays Bank, The Telegraph, Dorset Chamber and Enterprise Nation. I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved in the past 10 years, and can’t wait to see what the next 10 have in store!” www.studioshotz.co.uk

REIDsteel Celebrates Century Of Success A Dorset steel company founded in 1919 by Colonel John Reid, whose first structures included aircraft hangars for the famous French aviator Louis Bleriot, is this year celebrating its landmark centenary year. John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) linked up with the cross-Channel airman after he crash-landed in a field in France and used a cattle shed built by the firm to store his damaged aeroplane. Today the Christchurch-based business has become a leading international structural steel firm with the capability to design, manufacture and supply entire steel buildings including their cladding and glazing anywhere across the UK, Europe and worldwide. Over the past two years, REIDsteel has been working on its strategy to secure the company’s long term future and it has announced its plans for a multi-million pound investment in a new purpose built facility that will substantially increase its productivity. The plans will involve the company relocating within the Christchurch area, regarding which there will be a further announcement soon. The company is also working closely with stakeholders to turn its current site into a more suitable use for housing, which is much needed within the Christchurch area. Managing Director Simon Boyd said: “History recounts that Louis Bleriot after crash landing in a field in France used one of our steel cattle sheds, loosely interpreted as Hangar in French, as a

temporary shelter for his damaged biplane. “Impressed by the steel structure he immediately ordered three more for his growing aircraft fleet. “In doing so he set the wheels in motion for the formidable steel construction business that REIDsteel has become today. “We have some of the most advanced hangars worldwide to our name as well as a vast range of other high quality steel structures that include sports stadia, industrial buildings, warehouses, bridges, world-leading disaster resilient buildings and defensive structures. “We’re looking forward to a superb centenary year in which we will celebrate our past achievements and look to the future with confidence.” The company will be holding a party in May to mark this milestone with staff and special guests. Simon added: “REIDsteel has had to endure many tough times throughout the last century. “The company survived being bombed out of France during the Second World War, moving to England and finally setting up on its current site in Christchurch during the 1950s. “Michael Reid, who took on the running of the business from his father, had to deal with rationing

and steel shortages as well as the after effects of the war on the UK economy. “Our resilience has been down to maintaining the best quality service with integrity, along with the skills and hard work of our people over many years and our policy of placing innovation, customer care and staff involvement at the heart of everything we do. “We’ve led the way with new technologies and practices, including our patented Archspan Frame, while drawing on our century of experience to create the best and most suitable value engineered products.” As well as working throughout the UK, REIDsteel has won four Queen’s Awards for Enterprise (International Trade) and has exported to more than 140 countries to date on every continent, including some of the most remote locations in the world. If it is a building or structure made from steel, whether in the UK or abroad, then REIDsteel can design, manufacture and build it to the highest standards, as can be attested by many top brands such as Heineken, Coca Cola, Crown, Jaguar Land Rover, Gulfstream, Bombardier to name but a few.
