DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME

It is hard to believe this is the twelfth edition of Dorset Business Focus since launching in January 2019! Working with our publishers Pulford Publicity, we have endeavoured to create a monthly business magazine that is topical, relevant and engaging. In just 12 months, Dorset Business Focus has become established as one of the South’s leading business magazines; thank you to everyone who has contributed in this first year. It has been a busy and successful year for Dorset Chamber, our 70th anniversary year. Membership, including our Business Partner programme, has remained strong and I would like to thank all our Members, Business Partners, Ambassadors, Board and partners for their ongoing support and contribution to Dorset Chamber. I would also like to thank the town chambers across Dorset with whom we have affiliation relationship. We believe this is fundamental to building a strong and united business community across Dorset. To mark the year, we held our first Presidents Summer Ball in June and during the evening launched a new Chamber project, Dorset Chamber Life Skills. Dorset Chamber Life Skills helps fund life skills and employability support for young people in care and care leavers. Statistics show that these young people in particular are often disadvantaged and their life chances are significantly worse than their peers. The project is funded by charitable donations which go through Dorset Community Foundation as our charity partner to fund this vital support. The £4,000 raised at the Presidents Summer Ball is being used to recruit and pay for the training of 20 business mentors who will help provide support and guidance to young people in care

or leaving care. If you would like to get involved or support this great cause, please get in touch. This year saw a huge change in local government with the introduction of two new unitary authorities for Dorset, replacing nine councils. This re-organisation was strongly supported by the business community who clearly saw the opportunities for streamlining services, reducing costs as well providing the opportunity to work far more strategically. Dorset Chamber has been working closely with both authorities and our October magazine featured an interview with Matt Prosser, Chief Executive of Dorset Council and Graham Farrant, Chief Executive of BCP Council. We’ve committed to work closely with both authorities in helping drive economic growth in Dorset. As part of our ongoing modernisation, the year saw the launch of a new corporate logo for Dorset Chamber. We felt the previous logo had reached the end of its life and the new logo is simple, clean, bright and modern, as well as very digital friendly. The logo, as part of the strong branding we have developed, has been well received and quickly established. Brexit has been an ongoing cause of concern and frustration for many and we have sought to step up our support for businesses across Dorset.

We have established a Brexit support service, supported by funding from BCP and Dorset councils. This funding has supported a dedicated Brexit Advisor, Camilla Call, who is available to help businesses fund the support and guidance they need. This service is free and open to all Dorset businesses. We have also produced a Dorset Chamber Brexit Guidance document and you can find this, as well as a range of sector specific Brexit guides and other tools, on our website. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Our general business advice and support service, funded by the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, continues to perform well and has provided great help support for many businesses across Dorset. Again, this service is free and open to all businesses. Finally, September 2019 saw us receive our re-accreditation from the British Chambers of Commerce, meaning we are part of a network of 53 accredited chambers with a national voice, campaigning on behalf of businesses at the highest levels. This year the British Chambers of Commerce has tirelessly campaigned and pushed for an orderly Brexit and an end to the political deadlock. Next year will see a focus on critical domestic issues that we feel have

taken a back seat due to Brexit, issues such as the need for investment in infrastructure, digital connectivity and technology, skills and productivity. We will be working closely with the British Chambers of Commerce and pushing on these issues at a local level. I would like to finish by paying tribute to business owners and teams across Dorset who have continued to push forward with resilience and determination in what has and will continue to be a challenging climate. I would also like to say a personal thank you to all the Chamber team who do a fantastic job with pride and passion. Looking forward to 2020, we will be there to help and support the business community as we leave the EU. I’d like to wish you and your families and a happy and peaceful Christmas and a positive and rewarding 2020.

I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and best wishes. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham

We are quickly approaching the end of an interesting year.

B

y the time this December issue has run its course we will have seen a general election and a year of tricky politics which has left us with Brexit still hanging without conclusion. Looking back at my year as President it has disappeared in a flash, but I have enjoyed every minute. And the additional roles I have assumed over the course of it, on a wider regional and national level, have given me broader insight to the challenge’s businesses face across the country. I am seeing better collaboration between county chambers which is focusing effort and driving change across the South West and South Wales in my role as Chair of the South West Regional Assembly. And my recent appointment to the board of the British Chambers of Commerce is going to expose me to further insight and opportunity which I hope to bring back for the benefit of our members here in Dorset. Speaking to members, it’s clear we are all feeling the need to embrace change and navigate choppy and unchartered waters. But Dorset seems to remain resilient and upbeat – maybe one of the reasons for that is the extent of water that is a big part of our landscape. A member of my LLPR team recently showed me a fantastic article in the Guardian about blue spaces and how spending time near water has a scientifically proven restorative effect on body and mind. Whilst over the 21 years my business has been based next to the water in Poole, I have at times considered the merits of alternative office space and concluded that the benefits of our natural environment in a working context massively outweigh any negatives.

Coastal living leads to improved positive mood and reduced stress. Fact. We have the luxury of equally amazing green space bolted on for good measure, so we have every reason to thrive here. Admittedly we could do with some better road and rail links to get in and out of it and interact with the rest of the world slightly easier! As I spend more time between here and London, I am exasperated at times with the inefficiency and expense of physically getting anywhere. This is a common theme; towns and cities all over Britain are struggling with dated infrastructure and increased volume of traffic and cargo movement. Its little reassurance, but its not just us. I can offer some thread of hope however that regional voices joining together may position our attributes in a bigger, louder way – we may not be able to fix our road issues easily but we can be creative about how we do things, and promote our virtues to attract new business interest from a wider audience. It’s the only way to move forward; we won’t get away with working in our comfortable, parochial silos much longer. In all of this sea of change its important to reflect and celebrate the things that have been achieved and the end of a calendar year is a good time to do that. In 2019 we have seen some great things happen….here is a small snapshot: This magazine launched and what a success it has been – massive well done to the chamber team Two new unitary authorities, BCP and Dorset Council successfully came into being through significant hard work across our local council members and officers In Bournemouth the Winter Gardens scheme gained approval…..it will be one of the biggest regeneration projects for decades

Dorset Chamber has had its most profitable year ever, going from strength to strength as it celebrates its 70th anniversary Our new Chamber Life Skills project was launched, raising funds to provide valuable life skills and employability support to young people in care and care leavers England won the cricket world cup and we got close to winning the rugby world cup too And what am I looking forward to in 2020? At Liz Lean PR we are excited about our client, Paultons Park, which is launching Tornado Springs in May - its brand new Americana-themed world, comprising its biggest ever single investment. I managed somehow with a miracle to get 2020 Glastonbury tickets. Roll on the (hopefully) balmy days of June. And some news about my role at Dorset Chamber which will potentially be announced at the AGM so watch this space…...you can’t get rid of me that easily. So, Christmas is here. Enjoy the festivities and freshen up ready for what I predict might be a rollercoaster of a year…..and that’s not just at Paultons Park! Thanks for all your support in 2019

In 2020 Hendy Group will have a turnover of £1 billion, making it the largest private company on the south coast, with 65 dealerships representing 26 brands and employing 2,000 people. Mr Hendy said: “Family values are everything for

us – the sixth generation of Hendys is now also in the business – and we have a strong moral compass which has served us well over 160 years. We are in a strong position which allows us to make continued investments in the future. “We remain inspired and passionate about our products, continue to take great satisfaction in our colleagues’ career development and we make business decisions for the long term, not for shortterm gain.” Talking of the partnership with the Cherries, he added: “Being associated with your local football club means you are associated with your local community – and the great thing about AFC Bournemouth is that they are very much a community club. Amy Marks, the club’s partnerships manager, said: “We were delighted to be invited to hold our networking event at this hugely impressive dealership. We work closely with Hendy Group on a range of campaigns and it was a privilege to see these excellent facilities at first hand.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / YOUNG CHAMBER

Dorset Chamber and Young Chamber Welcome Launch of Dorset Careers Hub Dorset Chamber has welcomed the launch of the Dorset Careers Hub in November which sees 40 secondary schools and colleges across Dorset working together to deliver the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks - a framework of 8 guidelines that define the best careers provision for young people.

D

ata shows that schools and colleges in the first wave of Careers Hubs introduced in 2018 are already outperforming the national average across all aspects of careers education. The Dorset Careers Hub is one of 18 new and two expanded Careers Hubs in the second wave and will provide access to bursaries for individual schools and colleges to train Careers Leaders as well as providing a Central Hub Fund to support activities. Joan Senior, Young Chamber Coordinator, said: “Where Careers Hubs have been introduced in other parts of the country they have been shown to

be successful. It is now Dorset’s turn to benefit from this enhanced approach to careers support. As the the largest business membership organisation in the county, Dorset Chamber’s Young Chamber already works closely with Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (Dorset LEP), The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC), BCP Council and Dorset Council to help build relationships between businesses and schools, as well as encouraging business people to volunteer and support careers activities. "That said, we are also aware of the recruitment needs of our members, whether for specific businesses or sectors, and their requirements when it comes to addressing immediate and long-

term workforce needs. This means as a Chamber we have a role in communicating these needs back to careers support organisations and schools too.” Careers Hubs work by building a collaborative approach between business partners, the public, education and voluntary sectors with a dedicated Hub Lead to help coordinate activity and build networks. The Dorset Careers Hub launches against a backdrop of a strong foundation for this in the form of the existing Collaboration for Careers Dorset (#C4DC) group. Comprising Young Chamber, Young Enterprise, Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, The Careers & Enterprise Company, BCP Council, Dorset Council and JP Morgan (sponsor of the Young Enterprise DASH Employability Skills Programme), C4DC was formed in spring 2019 after a need was identified for different organisations working in the careers sector to work more closely together. Helen Stevenson, Dorset Careers Hub Lead, said: “As the Careers Hub Lead I will be working closely with the C4DC group. We appreciate the support of Dorset Chamber and Young Chamber, since employers are seen as vital to the programme’s success, with all Hubs required to demonstrate strong collaboration with local businesses and a clear plan for increasing employer engagement.” Read more about the Dorset Careers Hub on page 21. Are you sharing information in real time? Jeff Jones, Enhanced’s Infrastructure Business Development Manager explains how businesses can use Office 365 to better effect. Within the IT sector there is currently a digital revolution taking place which is being driven by the expectations of the latest generation of users. Industries of all shapes and sizes, including charities, no longer wish to purchase on premise hardware and software solutions or pay for these solutions upfront. Many are moving to an operational expenditure model for their IT. The ability to run applications from central data centres in the cloud has kick started the next IT evolution, “Digital Transformation solutions”. At the forefront of these solutions is a suite of products that make up Microsoft’s Modern Office Workplace. The first adoption of these was Office 365 which enabled access to Microsoft’s Office suite as a service. But within Office 365 the real game changer was Microsoft Teams. Teams is a digital hub that brings conversations, content, and applications together all in one place. Teams enables companies to collaborate and be more productive.

Microsoft’s Office suite and OneDrive cloud storage integration enables you to have Emails, Shared Calendars, Instant Messaging, Chat, Online Meetings, Voice & Video calls and collaborative editing of shared content, in real time, all in one place. The uses are limitless! Company employees are now able to work on projects together, with each user’s changes reflected instantly. You are now able to exchange information like never before in ways that were just not possible a few years ago. Teams is also available as a mobile application so mobile users can share live video, photos and screen captures whilst on the move. A Team site is easy to setup and share with colleagues and other contacts. All this comes as a subscription cloud service which is protected by the latest compliance requirements and security standards. They are now seeking small donations such as toiletries; books, games and puzzles; hats, gloves and scarves, and chocolates and sweets, to ensure that all their residents have a gift to open on Christmas Day. Last year, thanks to generous donations from local businesses, over 150 Pivotal residents received a Christmas gift. Head of Charity Clare Sutton said, “Many of our residents are former homeless and do not have family or friends locally to spend Christmas with. It’s so important to give and receive at this time of year, and we hope some of the Chamber’s members might be able to help out with remaindered stock or a small donation. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

From Dorset to the Sahara Alice Smee, who works in Dorset, is set to endure gruelling heat and will trek 100km through one of the world's most inhospitable places on earth to raise money for Diverse Abilities, Dorset's disability charity. Alice will spend five days trekking through the Sahara Desert in Morocco, where temperatures could reach highs of more than 40C. Diverse Abilities is the nominated charity of the year for Hoburne, where Alice works as its Network Coordinator. She volunteered to take part in the epic charity challenge to help raise as much money as she can, and to also mark her 60th birthday. Commenting on the trek, Alice said: "I signed up because this year I will celebrate turning 60, and I needed a challenge that will push me out of my comfort zone. It's an organised trek, and I chose the Sahara because although it will be challenging, it’s good for people that don’t have a lot of experience.

"When we land in Casablanca, we will travel through the mountain range in Southern Morocco to our starting point in the desert. The heat is going to play a big part, and we will basically be in the middle of the desert with no facilities around us at all. It will be long old days and hard work on the body walking through deep sand but fortunately, we will have a support team who will make sure we don't get lost in the dizzying heat.” Alice has undertaken an intensive training programme but admits it is going to be difficult to prepare for the heat. "I've been upping my walking around the Dorset coastline and I normally cycle or swim at least three times a week, so I've got a good baseline of fitness," she said. Commenting on Alice’s charity trek, Hoburne chairman, Rosie Kennar said: “I have known Alice for a long time, and this challenge is very much out of her comfort zone. We

are all incredibly proud of her and the training she is undertaking. We wish her all the best, and we are very grateful to everyone that is donating to such a wonderful cause.” Hoburne Group Support and Hoburne Park in Christchurch are supporting Diverse Abilities as their nominated charity of the year, with staff organising various fundraising initiatives including bake sales, car washes and quiz nights. To date, Hoburne has raised more than £5,000 for the Dorset charity. All the funds raised by Hoburne go directly to Diverse Abilities where they will be used to continue the vital services the disability charity provides

to adults and children in its care. Events co-ordinator, Jon Wheatley from Diverse Abilities, said: “This is definitely a unique trekking experience and a great opportunity for those that enjoy walking or just love spectacular views. This is a perfect challenge for those wanting to step out of their comfort zone and will provide life long memories. We are so impressed with Alice’s commitment to her training schedule so far and thank her for choosing us as her charity to sponsor.” You can donate to Alice’s JustGiving page at www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Alice-Smee.

BOFA Showcases Global Reach to the DIT BOFA International was among world-leading technology companies representing Dorset when the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) hosted the Department for International Trade’s advanced engineering and manufacturing team. The two-day visit, supported by Invest in Dorset, enabled Poolebased BOFA to showcase the global reach of its fume and dust extraction innovations, and to highlight the credentials that attracted foreignbased investment in the business. Led by Janice Whittington, Head of Sector - Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing, Department for International Trade Investment Services, and Terry Mankertz, Director for Sector Advisory Services (SAS), the 14-strong team visited a number of technology leaders to hear about Dorset’s growing success in advanced engineering and manufacturing, some key current projects and 18

opportunities for inward investment. “We were extremely proud to have been included in the advanced manufacturing showcase to the DIT,” said Geoff Sagar, Business Development Manager for BOFA and Invest In Dorset Ambassador. “As a multiple Queen’s Award winner, BOFA has been flying the flag for British manufacturing for over 30 years and it’s great to see how technological innovation rooted in Dorset is thriving not just in our own business but among our peers. We are also very pleased that the information gained during the visit will be disseminated around the world via embassies and trade missions.” The event, hosted at RNLI College in Poole, included presentations from the DIT, BCP Council, Dorset Council and Atlas Electronik UK promoting Dorset’s capabilities in a sector worth £1.4 billion to the local economy.

Dorset challenger agency, Fireworx, wins Brand Impact of the Year at the 2019 Wirehive 100 It was a double celebration for Dorset at last week’s Wirehive awards, with Fireworx’s rebrand and repositioning work for Choose Wisely taking out one of the top awards on the night. Wirehive were very complimentary of both the creative cut through and the results of the work, which helped Choose Wisely carve out a niche in the comparison site market. The comparison sector is dominated by household brands and multi-million-pound marketing

budgets, so it was a challenge the marketing agency were pleased to accept, albeit with the constraints of a much more modest budget! Daniel Smith, CEO of Fireworx was delighted with the award win, saying “We help brands punch above their weight by using a unique approach, we put ourselves in our client’s customers shoes and develop a harder hitting value proposition and stand-out creative which delivers more impact. Our work with Choose Wisely is a great example of how it can pay off for our clients, even against much bigger brands with bigger spend.” The Choose Wisely relaunch was an overnight conversion sensation, improving Email Marketing Consent Opt-in by over 150%, and increased eligibility check form click out to lenders by an impressive 450%. In making the award, the Wirehive spokesperson said; "This entry showed a wonderful communications site with fresh, empowering messaging and easy usability. The result stats are very impressive and it’s easy to see how this has created an imaginative brand impact. Excellent work!" Marc Biles, CEO of Choose Wisely said; “The re-brand of Choose Wisely helped us focus more closely on our target customer and tailor a customer journey designed to simplify choosing the

right financial product for each user. We’re delighted with the results from a more purposeful Choose Wisely, and the process with Fireworx really helped us re-evaluate our marketing strategy” Fireworx has seen continued growth as a result of rewarding client partnerships. Ranked in the top ten elite UK agencies by the Drum, the agency works in both the commercial business and consumer sectors and is well known for using Disruptive Thinking and visually engaging creative to help clients stand out from the crowd. Its campaign for Dorset NHS Trust, using the appeal of Dorset in a recruitment drive to attract nurses to move from London to work in the county, was itself shortlisted as a Dorset Business Awards finalist in 2017, and their recent work for the Police Road Safety campaign has also been shortlisted for a 2019 Dorset Business Award, and nationally shortlisted for the Drum Out Of Home Campaign Of The Year 2019 Award. www.fwx.co.uk

Government Cashback for Dorset Innovators Rob Sowden of Bournemouth-based consultancy Business Cash Enabler reports an increase in Dorset companies benefiting under the government’s Research & Development (R&D) Tax Credits scheme. “Many more Dorset-based businesses are now receiving benefit under this generous scheme, designed to reward unique innovation activities in business. For many years the scheme has seemed too good to be true to many companies who have not applied for the credit or cashback, due to many myths and misinformation around the scheme. Many businesses have tried to self-assess whether they qualify and have assumed they don’t; many have even been told by their professional advisors that they aren’t eligible, when in reality they are. One myth is that a business has to be profitable or has to be paying corporation tax to be eligible. Some find it hard to believe that they

26

can receive an annual cash payment from HMRC when they are loss-making and not tax-paying. Reality is, they may receive a higher cashback payment than if they were profitable, because the scheme is based on costs incurred, not on revenue or profit. Typically, an SME can get back 33% of the amount they've spent on qualifying R&D. “For the past five years I have been increasing awareness of the government’s innovation tax incentives. The R&D tax credits scheme was introduced back in 2000/0, yet it still seems to me that we are just at the beginning of awareness, even though £26.9bn has paid out since inception,

December 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

/company/dorset-chamber/

it is still estimated that around 80% of eligible companies have not claimed or have under-claimed. Some clients have been assisted to claim by their accountant as they are in an obvious sector such as engineering or manufacturing. Interestingly though, many businesses that are not in these classic innovation sectors are also benefiting from the government’s R&D cashback, notably digital and IT in Dorset, but no sector is exempt if a business has truly innovated. “The government paid out £4.3bn in the last reported year, with an average SME claimant receiving £53k annual benefit. Many companies that have previously claimed have received small amounts, £10k, £20k, £30k, when they may have been entitled to 2, 3 or 4 times that amount, often a healthy six-figure cashback. Under-claiming happens when the claim process is mistaken for an accountancy workstream, but it really requires a technical appraisal, combined with specialist knowledge of the legislation. Maximised claims are based on a technologistled approach to ensure all eligible innovation activities are included in a claim and importantly, that projects that

/dorsetchamber

aren’t eligible haven’t been included, avoiding a potential HMRC clawback. It is possible to receive a claim shortfall for the prior two accounting periods, which can bring in an unexpected cash injection to a business - but there is a strict HMRC deadline for the prior two accounting periods, claim it or lose it!”

Business Cash Enabler provides a free service to businesses to check eligibility under the HMRC R&D tax credit scheme and advises on monetising intellectual property (IP) such as through the Patent Box tax relief scheme. Sunseeker’s new CEO sets the company on a new course The past 12 months have been pivotal for Dorset yacht manufacturer, Sunseeker International, including the appointment of a new CEO, and an announcement of a radical new product development plan. Following his appointment in the summer, CEO Andrea Frabetti is working closely with Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mike McMillan and Chief Operations Officer (COO), Michael Straughan to form a new Strategic Committee. The role of the committee is to build on the trading success of 2018 by delivering a more product-facing organisation structure and robust global distribution network, aided by a £60million CAPEX investment across 5 years. Under the leadership of Andrea, Sunseeker has announced that it will double its range to 22 models over the next three years, with eight planned for the next 12 months, and work on another six across 2021. Part of the expansion includes the launch of the brand new Superyacht Division, announced at Monaco Yacht Show in September this year. The division will comprise an expanded range of yachts from 101ft – 161ft, built in either GRP composite or metal with each benefitting from Sunseeker’s Bespoke customization programme providing the flexibility for clients to influence the design,

layout and interiors. Having already delivered 137 yachts over 100ft since 2000, the announcement further strengthens Sunseeker’s dominance in the superyacht category. This new division includes Sunseeker’s largest flagship model, the 161 Yacht, the first sale of which was made during the recent show. The model will be built in partnership with ICON Yachts and will be the first to be built in metal, with delivery expected in early 2022. The 161 Yacht is a tri-deck yacht with iconic Sunseeker exterior lines that offers exceptional space, volume, efficiency and luxury. It is another step towards the brand ensuring loyal owners have the option of building larger models with even greater customisation. Furthermore, Sunseeker recently unveiled the radical 133 Yacht at Cannes Yachting Festival. Reflecting the next generation of Sunseeker Yacht models, it features a vertical bow and beam of 31’ and contains 27% more interior volume than its sister ship, the 131 Yacht. MTU’s serial Hybrid system can also be specified for the first time, with smaller 12V engines that improve range and

allow zero emissions whilst cruising or anchoring. Understanding that customers are spending more time than ever on board, the new 133 Yacht will benefit owners with reduced noise, more usable space, improved efficiency and the latest technology. Not only does the expansion plan focus on newer models throughout the size range; an entirely new division; and metal builds, it also focuses on further developing the framework for the business and driving the Sunseeker brand forward to even greater success.

New Home for Cherry Picked Hampers

Sandbanks Ferry back in business The Sandbanks Ferry Company officially announced the return of the chain ferry to full service, beginning on Thursday, 31 October 2019. The service recommenced at 07:00 hours from Sandbanks, with 3 crossings per hour in each direction as usual until 23:10 hours from Studland. Mike Kean, Managing Director of the Sandbanks Ferry Company, says: “We were delighted to announce the return of the Sandbanks chain ferry to service on Thursday, October 31st at 07:00. “We know that the lack of a ferry service has caused a difficult and frustrating summer for many residents of Studland, Swanage and Poole, as well as for local businesses and of course, for the Company and its employees. We’d like to extend our sincere apologies once again for the issues caused by the service suspension, and a heartfelt thank you for the support we’ve been shown by the local communities while the ferry has been out of service. Our staff and contractors have worked incredibly hard over the summer on the repairs in order

to return the ferry to the passengers who rely on it.” “We’re looking forward to welcoming friends old and new on board, to a regular, safe and reliable service to the local community, as we have done for many years.” The chain ferry, which operates a route between Shell Bay in Studland and Sandbanks in Poole, experienced a broken driveshaft earlier this year – an unprecedented and prematurely early failure of a part which had been engineered to last the lifetime of the vessel. To expedite the repair, the Company paid an additional £46,000 to halve the lead time on a replacement component – and as a precautionary measure, replaced the second unaffected driveshaft assembly to minimise any risk of future loss in service. www.sandbanksferry.co.uk

A little giving goes a long way with Voip Exchange As we approach the season of giving, it’s an important time to reflect on the amount of devotion remarkable charities like The Brain Tumour Charity give to helping those in need. With roughly 11,700 people diagnosed with primary brain tumours each year in the UK, funding for research and awareness is key to improving the management and treatment of one of the nation’s silent killers. After being donated Voip Exchange, the scalable Cloud Telephony solution by Voip Unlimited in 2017, The Charity has seen a 79% increase in their call statistics from increased phone lines and remote working facilities, meaning more people can receive support and more awareness can be raised to double the rate of survival and save lives. Morebus unveils new state-of-theart bus depot in Bournemouth Go Ahead-Group chief executive officer, David Brown (pictured left), and leader of BCP council, Cllr Vikki Slade, joined Morebus managing director Andrew Wickham (pictured right) in Bournemouth this week - for the grand opening of the bus operator’s new state-of-the-art bus depot. Morebus has constructed the depot at the former home of its Excelsior Coaches operation, with a total investment of £2.5m. The site now sports custom-made facilities to house a large number of the bus operator’s local fleet of low emissions buses. These include the fleet of ADL Enviro 200 buses operating the M1 route between Bournemouth and Poole. Its five new double decker ADL Enviro 400 vehicles for the popular 13 route to Wimborne, via Ferndown, are also based here. All of these sport the very latest low emissions Euro 6 engines. The whole of Morebus’ Unibus service - operated on behalf of Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth - is also now fully run from the new facility. The depot also features a brand new bus wash, as well as some of the latest engineering pit technologies. “We are thrilled to be opening these wonderful new facilities here in Bournemouth,” said managing

director, Andrew Wickham. “Since acquiring Excelsior Coaches in October 2016, we have been keen to develop our site here in Southcote Road, so that it provides excellent facilities - not only for our buses and coaches, but also for our team. “Now we have fully-equipped rest quarters for our drivers and operations staff, including a large rest room with catering facilities, and new shower facilities for those working shifts - as well as this wonderful bus wash, which is ready-and-waiting to ensure our vehicles are squeaky clean when operating our services across Bournemouth and the surrounding area. “I was delighted to be joined this week by the CEO of our parent company, Go-Ahead Group, David Brown, and leader of BCP council Cllr

T

he Barn, a brand new indoor activity centre and café at Kingston Maurward Animal Park & Gardens, Dorchester, officially opens today. The new environmentally friendly structure means the park is now a year-round attraction for Dorchester and central Dorset, providing an educational space for visiting schools and members of the public. The launch event marks project completion for Dorset LEP which allocated £250,000 of the government’s Growing Places Fund loan to pay for the build of the centre. Ian Girling, Dorset LEP Board Member and Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, represented the Dorset LEP Growing Places Committee at the unveiling by cutting the ribbon. (as pictured) Dorset LEP Director, Lorna Carver, says: “Within our emerging 34

local industrial strategy, cultural excellence, skills and tourism are of high importance. Enhancing the park will be a great asset for Dorset and the College.” Kingston Maurward College is a specialist college which delivers training in subjects such as agriculture, animal welfare, conservation and construction. The College is Dorset’s only land-based provider for students from the ages of 16 in these subject areas. To provide some extra revenue for the College, and to educate students and visitors on rare animal breeds and sustainability, the Animal Park & Gardens was established in 1995 on the College land. The attraction offers visitors the chance to meet rare animal breeds through partnership with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. The park is home to animals such as Shetland ponies, alpacas and wallabies. Visitors can also take a walk to enjoy

Vikki Slade to launch Morebus’ impressive new Bournemouth home. It was also a great opportunity to show invited guests everything we have worked on here, to make this depot one of the most advanced in the country.” Go-Ahead Group CEO, David Brown, added: “The investment in the rebuilt depot represents our commitment to the local community, and to our colleagues as they work to provide customers with clean, frequent, reliable and comfortable journeys. The new low emission vehicles support the environment while giving people more reason to choose the bus.” For more information about Morebus, please visit morebus.co.uk

35 acres of formal gardens within a 750-acre estate. Kingston Maurward College Principal, Luke Rake, says: “The Barn is a fantastic new addition to the Animal Park & Gardens at Kingston Maurward. From a fairly decrepit polytunnel, alongside no undercover seating or play space, this new facility transforms the park as a destination and also allows us to teach primary school groups undercover and provide an enhanced café experience for all our visitors.” The Barn boasts environmentally friendly features such as low energy lighting, rainwater harvesting and sustainably sourced construction materials. As well as a café, it contains a wooden play zone with tactile and sensory elements. Every aspect of play is designed to develop motor skills, problem solving and social skills, particularly for children

from pre-school age up to key stage 1, in addition to a wider age range of young people with special educational needs. Adjacent to the play zone is a seating area which can be quickly converted to indoor classroom space for visiting school groups. Tom Reynolds, Centre Manager at the Animal Park & Gardens, says: “School visits take place all year round, but are currently particularly active in the autumn and late spring. The introduction of this new facility will enable the College to guarantee a sheltered education base, whatever the weather. Local primary schools are really excited to hear that we have this new resource, which highlights the demand for a covered area in this kind of learning environment.” www.kmc.ac.uk

Dragon boat event raises nearly £24,000 for charity Katie Bodman, Head of Superior’s Training Academy, with Hannah Miller, Challenge Events Manager for Julia’s House in China

Superior’s head of training tackles the Great Wall of China in aid of Julia’s House A member of the Superior team has raised more than £2,500 for Julia's House children’s hospice by scaling the Great Wall of China. Katie Bodman, Head of Superior’s Apprenticeship Academy, took part in the five-day challenge last month, which saw her cover up to 10 miles each day on uneven terrain in aid of the leading Dorset manufacturer’s chosen charity. Julia’s House provides practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting condition in their own homes, out in the community and in the hospices based in Dorset and Wiltshire. As part of a team, which included a number of Dorset businesses such as Seventa, JP Morgan and Dental Design, Katie and her fellow participants managed to raise a collective £70,000 in aid of Julia’s House, which could pay for a full-time nurse and carer at Julia’s House for a year. They were joined on the charity walk by family members of young people who have been supported by Julia’s House, who shared their stories on how the cause has helped themselves and their loved ones. Katie said: “The highlight of trekking the Great Wall of China was being able to share the experience with a group of amazing, likeminded people all of which had the common goal of wanting to raise as much money for Julia’s House as possible. Trekking the Alps last year for Julia’s House showed me the impact that the money raised has on the children and families supported by the hospice. This spurred me on to try and raise as much as I could.” The Superior team has raised over £113,000 for Julia’s House since it began fundraising in 2008. This year they have taken part in a number of challenges throughout the year including the New Forest Water Park, Tough Mudder and The Big Ride. The Great Wall of China was Katie’s second international challenge for Julia’s House, having trekked through the Alps in 2018, which Tim Brown, Superior’s MD, sponsored to ensure that all funds raised went directly to the charity. Hannah Miller, Challenge Events Manager for Julia’s House, who was part of the team who trekked the Great Wall of China, said: “It was tough but not as tough as the challenges our children and families face every day. I am so proud of what Katie has achieved – this is her second trek for Julia’s House and we are very grateful for her dedication and Superior’s ongoing support of our charity.” Superior has its own company-run Apprenticeship Academy on-site, offering apprenticeships to students as young as 16, giving apprentices the chance to learn about engineering, science and manufacturing. All apprentices are given the opportunity to gain a degree. For more information about Superior, visit www.superiorltd.com more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

23 teams took part in a Dragon Boat event in Poole Park which raised a significant amount of money that was shared amongst 3 charities. It was organised by J.P. Morgan and 350 employees took part in three races with three boats battling it out in each race. “It was a fantastic day and I am so grateful to everyone who took part, particularly those who worked behind the scenes to ensure the whole event was such a success,” says Lottie Forte, a member of the J.P. Morgan Community Relations Committee. “We were able to donate nearly £8,000 each to three charities which was a wonderful achievement from all concerned.” Alzheimers Society, Hope House Training and Support and Macmillan Caring Locally were the charities in question. "We were delighted to be invited to J.P Morgan's Dragon Boat event and it was a great opportunity for us to meet their employees and share the message about our exciting capital appeal, Brick By Brick, says Jen Rotchell, Senior Trust and Corporate Fundraiser, Macmillan Caring Locally “As an independent charity, not in any way connected to the national Macmillan charity, we rely on the good will of our local community for support. The money raised will help us to build a new and desperately needed specialist palliative care unit here in Christchurch." Jane Joy, Funding Manager for Hope commented. “We are a small charity supporting homeless people in Dorset and the support of an organisation such as J.P. Morgan is so important to us. Not only does it help with raising of much needed funds, but it is an amazing opportunity to create awareness of Hope Housing and the Hope AOK Rucksack Appeal and the work that we do to support homeless and vulnerable people in Dorset. This will make a huge difference to the people we support.”

Siân Johnson, Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser for Dorset and Somerset said: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer with someone developing it every three minutes. Dementia devastates lives; it slowly strips people of their memories, relationships and identities and every pound raised by J.P. Morgan will help Alzheimer’s Society improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by dementia. Alzheimer’s Society is committed to spending at least £150 million over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow. British Business Bank Start Up Loans Starting and growing your own business is an exciting prospect. It allows you to follow your passion, become your own boss and take ownership of your career. But the highs of escaping the nine to five come with significant challenges. The good news is that there is a lot of help out there for people who want to take the plunge – it’s just a question of knowing where to look to find the most reliable, trustworthy and up-to-date information. Sources of affordable finance Raising or sourcing affordable finance is one of the main challenges that aspiring businesses owners face. Recent research by the British Business Bank’s 2019 Small Business Finance Markets report shows that a third of smaller businesses went directly to their main bank when they needed finance, despite the fact that this may not be the most suitable choice for them or their business. People wanting to set up their business should look beyond the high street when seeking funding. There are many sources of alternative funding, including the Government-funded Start Up Loans programme. The programme is part of the British Business Bank, the government-owned economic development bank. Start Up Loans provide fixedinterest loans of up to £25,000 to aspiring business owners across the UK. Since it was set up in 2012, it has lent over £519 million pounds through more than 65,730 loans, of which £4.8m went to 473 business owners in Dorset. Dorset business owners One of those is Jonathan Gwynne, who secured a £2,500 Start Up Loan to set up Dorset Food Network, which acts as a mini search engine, network and platform for local businesses in Dorset. 40

December 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

Jonathan worked for Royal Mail for 15 years but had always dreamt of doing something which would allow him to combine his two passions: food and conscientious consumerism. The idea for his business came after he attended a food festival and struggled to find the businesses online in the aftermath of the event. He realised that the local food business community would benefit from an online directory, which led to the creation of The Dorset Food Network. Jonathan has been very satisfied by his experience with Start Up Loans, describing it as a “straightforward process, supporting me all the way through right from the first application to the present day. The application process has been

really easy and took a load off my mind, furthermore the post loan support has been fantastic.” Find out more Starting a business is daunting, there’s no doubt about it, but it can be one of the most exciting and thrilling things you ever do. So, if you’ve got an idea that you think fills a gap in the market, get in touch. We encourage you to read more on the free support and advice section of our website and the straightforward application process for a loan can be accessed at the following link: www.startuploans.co.uk/apply/

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Sue Bhatt from Dorset Chamber’s International Trade Team looks back on a busy year

2019

has been a noteworthy year in the world of international trade and 2020 is looking to start with uncertainty. But despite this challenge, companies in Dorset and the rest of the UK are continuing to trade internationally. “There has arguably never been a more important time to make sure that your staff are skilled and able to harness the incredible opportunity that international trade offers for growth” said Sue. Dorset Chamber has been

working with International Trade Matters to build a programme of training for 2020 based on customer feedback and requests, including many new options. Frances Fawcett of International Trade Matters said “It’s interesting to note that Brexit hasn’t had a significant impact on our course content. No doubt Brexit will lead to changes in day-to-day activities and companies need to prepare and use the new schemes that are coming to help, but the core skills and knowledge needed for international trade are not fundamentally impacted”.

The Chamber believes that businesses need to learn these skills now as they will help you today and enable you to be better prepared for changes that are to come. Whether you are interested in an overall professional qualification in international trade or need to understand the specific issues around something like dangerous goods, there will be a course in the programme to provide the skills and learning that you need. We very much look forward to meeting you in 2020 and helping you grow through international trade.

The Poole Harbour Boat Show Returns in 2020 The Poole Harbour Boat Show is now officially launched for a return in 2020 to the spectacular boating hotspot of Poole. The show will run from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th June and is already shaping up to be the most exciting to date. The 2020 Show, which is now second only to Southampton Boat Show in the UK was officially launched at the RNLI College last Thursday, 24th October. The kick-off event was attended by stalwarts of the UK marine industry alongside many local businesses, with the level of interest and support for 2020 being unprecedented. Over drinks and canapés, Jim Stewart, CEO Poole Harbour Commissioners, introduced the exciting plans for the 2020 show so far, including the addition of a Seafood Festival which will showcase local produce taken from waters around the region. Of particular importance, he also

shared the key themes for the 2020 show, which will be safety and the environment. Other plans include delivering the most captivating on-water displays, an attempt to break a Guin-ness World Record and a marine careers showcase. The show has played a key role in getting new people out on the water by providing free taster sessions and this will continue in 2020. A very successful ongoing partnership with local training centre Rockley Water Sports will be providing everybody the opportunity to experience stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and dinghy sailing. Jim Stewart summarised by saying, “We see ourselves as a community port and this is our way of giving back to the community by hosting Poole Harbour Boat Show. It’s grown from an attendance of 5,000 at the first event to around 32,000 this year, the fifth show.

Already 60 percent of marina spots have been taken for next year’s show and 45 percent of stands are booked.” The Poole Boat Show has something for everyone, from sail and motorboat owners, water sports enthusiasts, to families who are yet to experience the joy of being out on the water. With some of the biggest names in the marine industry showcasing their latest equipment and providing advice, to

demonstrations, fireworks, and live music, make sure the show is on your ‘to visit list’ in 2020. For more information visit www. pooleharbourboatshow.co.uk or follow us on social media. AGI aides Arctic climate change research mission Aeronautical & General Instruments (AGI) has recently supplied the largest polar expedition in history with portable runway lighting to enable emergency supplies to be provided to research vessel Polarstern whilst it drifts in ice for the next year, gathering data on global climate change. The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) project is the first expedition to drift through the Arctic all year round and is spearheaded by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The Polarstern set sail last month and now having reached its destination is wedged into the Arctic ice, following the natural drift to measure the features of the climate throughout the next year. A flight campaign is planned for spring 2020, when a landing strip will be carved out of the sea ice. Through its German representative, Wärtsilä JOVYATLAS EUROATLAS GmbH, AGI has provided its COREL LED Omni-directional Runway Edge Light and RTEL LED Runway Threshold End

Light in a unqiue setup of enabling helicopters to land on deck with the added ability to easily move the lights onto the ice to make an emergency runway. The lighting will assist helicopters and aeroplanes to land and deliver supplies to the global research crew when other vessels are no longer able to penetrate the ice. The lights are fully portable, lightweight, battery powered with a long run time and are constructed to endure all weather environments. A comprehensive training programme was also delivered for the expedition participants at Wärtsilä’s premises in Bremen, in order to operate and maintain the lighting system during the 13 month expedition. David Hyde, AGI Managing Director said: “we are excited to support Polarstern on its year long journey. With climate change being extremely topical, AGI is proud of its involvement in this historic event where our reliable, low cost lighting solutions help mission critical landings to take place with minimal effort”.

Patrick Appel, Sales Engineer Wärtsilä JOVYATLAS EUROATLAS GmbH said: “AWI has been internationally recognised for polar and marine research for decades and a connection with the Institute began many years ago when we supplied an AGI Precision Approach Pathway Indicator system to German Antarctic Research Station Neumayer-Station III. This then lead to the proposed airfield lighting configuration for the MOSAiC project and we are happy to have secured the order”. www.agiltd.co.uk

Care home celebrates double global success Colten Care’s interior design team is celebrating a double helping of international recognition for its newly opened Dorset care home, Bourne View. The art deco-themed nursing and residential home in Poole scooped Silver at the World Interiors News WIN awards and a finalist’s place at the SBID International Awards. Both sets of awards are well established in the design industry calendar, attracting entries from companies, agencies and design practices across the world. Judges in both awards, including distinguished architects and designers, praised Bourne View for successfully balancing residents’ clinical needs with modern living and art deco-style glitz. The twin success comes just a few weeks after the home won the Knight Frank Care Home Design Award for the way it has been planned, designed, built and fitted out. In addition, the interior design team are on the shortlist for the forthcoming FX Awards, a further celebration of world-class design excellence. At the WIN awards, Bourne View was runner-up in the residential care home category to a retirement community in Puwan, China. At SBID it was on a shortlist of just 15 healthcare and wellness category finalists whittled down from a field of entries representing 48 countries. Both Georgina Colwell, Colten’s Head of Design, and Wendi Batchelor, Assistant Interior Designer, attended the WIN and SBID awards ceremonies in London. Georgina said: “Even before it opened in March 2019, we knew we had achieved something special at Bourne View, but to have this level of international recognition so soon is amazing. We are completely blown away and incredibly proud.” Colten has developed its in-house more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Poole Audi’s local business development team is on the front foot with new electric and plug-in hybrid models complementing the broad choice already available from the showroom on Old Wareham Road. With an electric range of up to 26 miles, backed up by a petrol engine for longer journeys, the Q5 TFSI e has already attracted glowing reviews. Auto Express concluded the SUV “manages to be virtually everything to all people - fast, practical, quiet, efficient, comfortable, cheap to run, and just as sumptuous as you expect.” Sam Cadwell, Fleet Sales Manager at Poole Audi, explained: “With just 49g/km CO2, the Q5 TFSI e delivers company car drivers substantial BiK savings. For our popular S line trim these savings amount to over £3,500 in the 2020/21 tax year for a 40% tax payer.” A3, A6, A7 and A8 TFSI e models are due imminently, further extending Audi’s hybrid offering. These models add to the wide range of efficient petrol and diesel models also available. Sam added: “Now more than ever it is essential to review all the options available ahead of making a new car purchase. With all-electric and plug-in hybrids joining the most efficient petrol and diesel models Audi has ever had, it is vital to evaluate your individual driving habits and requirements to select the most suitable car. “The Poole Audi local business team is here to offer a thorough explanation of the options available to any business decision maker or company car driver, discussing choice of model, driving range and performance, tax implications and the impact of evolving funding options and cash allowances. Even the timing of a purchase can have a big impact. For example, the emission figures used to calculate car tax will change next April, meaning in most cases it will be advantageous to order and register a car before this date.” To discuss your requirements, contact the Poole Audi business sales team on 01202 983727. 45

How to Digitally Detox; the right way I must spend 90% of my life with technology; on my laptop and on my mobile. Admittedly, most of that is because that’s what I do as a Virtual Assistant. However, we all know that sometimes we need to get away from it all, welcome to the Digital Detox. The idea behind the Digital Detox is that you basically walk away from all things digital, in particular, social media. Some may only detox for a day whereas others, months. But, just what affect does this have on your business? Just imagine, you’ve got a physical shop on the high street. You’ve got loyal customers who shop their everyday, seeing what’s new because they’ve invested in you and your brand and trust you to deliver what they need. Now imagine closing that shop without warning for weeks on end. Customers are likely to get suspicious and wonder if things have gone badly wrong and that maybe you’ve gone out of business. It’s exactly the same principal when it comes to social platforms. If you add it up, the majority of us will literally spend thousands of hours building our platforms and our followers, creating the buy-in and the trust with them that keeps them coming back for more. If suddenly we were to disappear, we lose that trust. In the world of social media, not

only do we lose that trust, but we lose momentum of continuing to build our brand. Social media is a hugely fickle tool with new brands and influencers coming and going all the time, so the minute you stop giving your followers what they want, they will find the next big thing very quickly. So how do we digitally detox the right way? 1. Don’t tell your followers that’s what you’re doing. It’s pretty much like saying I don’t want to talk to you. I want you to invest in me and buy from me, but I don’t care very much for you. 2. Use scheduling tools. Make sure you have a plan in place for when you are away from it all. Pre-schedule posts to make it look like you’re still around, even if you’re not. You can now even schedule stories and delay videos to make them look like your ‘going live’. 3. Pass the torch. Even if you’ve decided to schedule your posts and content, there’s still the

issue of replying and responding to comments and engaging with your followers and other social media users. Ask for someone to mind your social accounts while you take ten. By doing this, not only will you avoid being put on the naughty list of Instagram and Facebook, but to your audience and followers, it’s business as usual. Getting away from it all is hugely important for any business owner, particularly if you feel that technology is becoming too big of a part of your life and, in some cases, it's having a negative effect on your life and quite possibly your health. However, correctly managing the time that you will be away from it and implementing solutions to keep the momentum will limit the damage and impact that having time off from it all can have. Do you need help keeping the momentum going while you're away? Contact one of the team at The Contemporary PA, www.thecontemporarypa.co.uk

St Edward’s has stood out against dozens of other entries from UK schools to be shortlisted as one of four finalists in the ‘School of the Year’ category. The shortlisting also recognises St Edward’s innovative and passionate teachers, such as Subject Leader for History, Government and Politics, Sara Sinaguglia, who recently received the Silver “Pearson National Teaching Award”. Sara has been commended for ‘bringing learning alive’ by providing opportunities for her students including the hosting of a live interview with John Bercow, 48

Speaker of the House of Commons. Commenting on their shortlisting in the National School Awards, Headteacher Michael Antram, said: “It is an absolute honour to be shortlisted in the National School Awards. This shortlisting is a testament to the hard work by everyone who works at St Edward’s. The collaborative effort from everyone in the school has enabled us to create a supportive culture for learning; and this provides excellent opportunities for our students whilst also supporting fellow members of staff to thrive too.” Founded by the Institute of School Business Leadership (ISBL) and the Schools & Academies Show, the National School Awards consist of six awards which are designed to recognise and reward individual school leaders and schools in the UK for their fantastic work across the sector.

Their visit was hosted by ex-Air Traffic Controller and Subject Matter Expert at Micro Nav, David Harvey, who has been involved with the ladies’ team since 2017 as their Sports Injury Therapist and Emergency First Aider, providing players with injury assessment, injury rehabilitation advice, and touchline First Aid support. Ladies' football is flourishing at grassroots level and, with the success of the ladies' national side in the recent World Cup and subsequent media coverage, is making the sport more accessible to women and girls. This year, Micro Nav is proud to have been asked to sponsor the team’s kit, and the First Team’s Player’s Player of the Match award. As a software company, Micro Nav is conscious of its responsibility to inspire and encourage girls and women into the traditionally male-dominated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industry. Formed in 2013, Bournemouth Sports Ladies Football Club has grown in numbers, such that, for this season, they are able to field two squads - a First Team and a development squad. Bournemouth Sports FC is an FA Charter Standard Development Club affiliated to Hampshire FA, providing football for all ages.

Q&A with Creditplus' AI specialist What's the state of AI in the lending industry today? Throughout the industry, AI is being implemented in many different areas of the process. From targeted marketing and lead qualification to credit scoring, due diligence and loanbook analysis. Undoubtedly the most important component of the process is credit risk. Traditionally two different mechanisms exist to determine risk, a selection mechanism and an outcome mechanism: • Selection mechanism distinguishes between whether an applicant is accepted or rejected for a loan. • Outcome mechanism determines the performance of the loan - or informally, whether or not a loan is fully paid or defaulted. What's the biggest trend shaping AI in lending this year? As mentioned, the most important area to a lending institution is risk mitigation, and this has been shown as a focal area for AI in academic research and is being applied across the lending industry currently. Current applications include: • Detecting fraudulent behaviour / anti-money laundering • Credit risk • Loanbook maintenance and monitoring Voice search is also making a lot of noise across the globe. In 2018, 114 million smart speakers were sold, but 2019 could see an 80% increase taking total sales to over 200 million. Long-tail search terms, using natural language, will be the second largest use (after music) however the financial industry will have to be smart in its implementation as over 30% of users said they had no interest or were fearful of using this technology to manage money. What's the largest challenge to AI adoption in lending? There many challenges in regard to lending, such as: • Regulations such as the Basel Accord I, II and III, ensure that any model being utilised that effects lending decisions must be explainable. This completely eliminates 'black box' AI models, such as neural networks. • AI can require very data hungry models, particularly in the field of deep learning. Not every business has access to the scale and quality of data necessary to leverage certain techniques. • A company looking to adopt AI methodologies cannot expect a single technique to work for a variety of problems. Each problem will require its own analysis, design and implementation. What's the future of AI in lending? In both consumer and corporate lending, artificial intelligence will enable lenders to gauge the future creditworthiness of a declined applicant, rather than only the current creditworthiness, essentially unlocking a new market that is currently unviable to the lender, enabling the financial institution to generate more business. An integral component of the lending industry is the finance broker, which has the potential to transform into a ‘self-driving” process where an applicant applies for finance and the deal will be carefully constructed by the broker system rather than the heuristic-based approach advisers tend to take; each lender available to the brokerage will be scrutinised on the probability of acceptance by the lender based on data-driven domain expertise. www.creditplus.co.uk

Construction team aim for apprenticeship degrees The government subsidised Degree Apprenticeship schemes are proving popular with one of the region’s leading consulting civil and structural engineers. Louis Cornell who started with Romsey based WFBA 2 years ago as a Trainee Technician, has spent one day a week with Solent University to gain a HNC with distinction for Civil Engineering and will now also start a 4 year University Degree Apprenticeship at Portsmouth. He will be joined by Civil Technicians Sam Wicks and John Comer, who have been part of the Civil Engineering team for 4 years and all aiming to become Chartered Engineers. WFBA Directors Nick Groves and Steve Hollick, welcomed Omar Lakhssassi the Business Development Executive for Degree Apprenticeships at the University, to meet the team which included some former Portsmouth University students who are now fully qualified and supporting the successful and expanding £1.60m business that provides essential support to construction projects within a broad range of market sectors which include Commercial, Marine, Residential, Education, Hotel and Leisure, and Refurbishment. “We are pleased to help the University of Portsmouth promote the subsidised Degree Apprenticeship schemes that need to be embraced more by the construction industry. There is now no real excuse to complain about the lack of opportunity to increase

the pool of suitably qualified people when businesses are only required to make a 5% contribution or their apprenticeship levy, which is very cost efficient for both employer and the employee who pay no fees,” said Steve Hollick. The government currently subsidise 95% of Apprentice course fees for non levy payers, so companies could sponsor a full degree for as little as £2500 to attend one day a week courses at University of Portsmouth to become chartered engineers. Omar Lakhssassi recently attended the Southern Construction and Property Breakfast Club to meet leaders in the industry to promote the message. “From our point of view, the incentive to upskill our engineering team is very strong and we are impressed with the syllabus, course content and the high standard of the lecturers we have met at the University,” said Steve Hollick. H&W’s Community Chest donates more than £26,000

Dorset LEP invests in education

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (Dorset LEP) has allocated just over £1.3 million of Local Growth Funding to three local colleges and a university in Dorset - a significant local investment in our young people. Dorset LEP’s investment will work to address key skills gaps and unlock talent and ambition across our local communities, supporting valued economic activity, as outlined in our emerging Local Industrial Strategy. Lorna Carver, Dorset LEP Director, said: “Increasing the local education skills offering and competitiveness is of great importance in consolidating Dorset as a great place to learn, and then work. In particular, these four projects demonstrate investment in the areas of arts, landbased studies and engineering & manufacturing.” Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) will receive £51,000 for the purchase of new laptops and a bespoke locker unit from which further education students will be able to loan the computers, giving students free access to specialist Mac laptops fitted with the latest creative industry standard software. This project is expected to be operational in March 2020, it will upskill AUB students as well as support local creative industry businesses seeking skilled employees. Kingston Maurward College (KMC), Dorchester, have been allocated £111,000 to build an Outdoor Education Centre and undertake college refurbishment works. The new centre will include a bouldering climbing wall which is a teaching resource and commercial asset. By late 2020, the landbased education college will have this new centre, a refurbished commercial kitchen and improved access roads. Weymouth College will introduce an Engineering Centre of Excellence to Dorset thanks to a £605,000 investment, which will vastly improve advanced engineering teaching capabilities by paying for state-of-the-art equipment. Plans include a new digital media suite, allowing students to develop computer-aided-design and modelling skills. There are also plans to advance the College’s Electrical Engineering Centre at their Poundbury Campus, as well as the machinery and IT equipment available within the Centre of Excellence for Motor Vehicle Technology project recently completed, also supported by Dorset LEP. Finally, £610,000 of skills funding from Dorset LEP will support Bournemouth & Poole College (BPC) in further establishing an Engineering Centre of Excellence in Dorset by increasing their engineering & manufacturing offering. This will involve the refurbishment of an existing building on Fulcrum Business Park for engineering and advanced manufacturing skills training and the creation of a workspace construction hub at BCP College’s North Road campus. Hall & Woodhouse, the leading independent familyowned Dorset brewer, has awarded more than £26,000 to 22 local causes across the south-west through its Community Chest Awards. The annual awards are an initiative created by Hall & Woodhouse (H&W) with the ambition to improve both the facilities and the lives of people in the community, by providing grants to local voluntary groups and causes that require financial support. The 18th annual awards ceremony was held at Hall & Woodhouse’s Crown Hotel, in the heart of Blandford Forum. The evening was supported by Blackmore Vale Media and the Dorset Community Foundation. Mark Woodhouse, Family Director of Hall & Woodhouse, said: “We are tremendously proud of our Community Chest Awards and the thousands of people it has helped since it began 18 years ago. We wanted to create a grant-giving initiative that would support local worthy causes across the south and help make their visions become a reality. “When we review the applications made to the Community Chest, it is always a very difficult process as there are so many worthy causes in need of aid. Ultimately, we select the charities that require our support to provide long-term benefits to the wider community.” This year, Dorset Mind was awarded a grant of £1,500 to provide a rain shelter and a compost toilet for the mental health charity’s ecotherapy group called the ‘GAP’. This project aims to help people develop positive mental health through therapeutic gardening. Island Community Action received £2,500 to support local communities in Portland through its ‘Silver Island’ scheme that helps people aged

50 and over marginalised through poor physical and psychological health, social deprivation and poverty. The grant will also be used to fund the ‘Forget-Me-Not’ Songsters, a choir created to support those with all forms of memory loss including people with dementia. The money donated by H&W will fund an entire year of activity for the charity. Luccombe Hub was also granted £3,000 on the night to allow the Milton Abbas-based charity buy laptops and similar equipment for the children and young people that use the Hub’s services. The Hub provides a therapeutic, alternative form of education for children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education due to a range of social and communication problems, that can result in challenging behaviour. Applications will be open for the 2020 Community Chest awards in March where voluntary groups can request funding ranging from £300 to £3,000 to help them achieve their aims. Grants could be awarded for new equipment, training, transport or running costs, and can be made towards youth services, the elderly, or any other projects that enhance the local community. Domestic Abuse and the role of the workplace An estimated 1.9 million adults aged 16 to 59 experience domestic abuse each year. Domestic abuse comes in many forms such as physical, psychological, sexual, emotional, verbal and economical and is estimated to cost UK businesses around £1.9 billion a year due to decreased productivity, time off work, lost wages and sick pay. Often the workplace is the only safe place for victims of domestic abuse to escape to, however, it is often overlooked by employers as they lack the skills and confidence to start the conversation for fear of what may be said. Dealing with domestic abuse should form part of an employers duty of care and is just as important as dealing with an employees mental or physical wellbeing. One in six working age adults suffer from poor mental health and six in ten workers state that poor mental health affects their concentration whilst at work. There is also a clear association between domestic abuse and mental illness and according to a report by Refuge those trapped by domestic abuse can feel so hopeless that they believe that suicide is the only way. In a recent report by Vodafone it was revealed that although many organisations want to support employees suffering domestic abuse only 5% actually have a supportive policy in place. Knowing how to support and protect employees who suffer domestic abuse and having the skills and confidence to start a conversation around the issue is key to tackling what is often seen as a taboo subject. /company/dorset-chamber/

Work Well Hub is working with Public Health England (PHE) to raise awareness of the campaign across the South West of England and together they are encouraging employers to ‘take action’ in addressing domestic violence. To support the campaign PHE and Business in the community have produced a ‘Domestic Abuse: a toolkit for employers’. The toolkit provides practical advice on how to respond to the risk of domestic abuse and build an approach that ensures all employees feel supported and empowered by their workplace to deal with domestic abuse. The Domestic abuse: a toolkit for employers document details three key actions employers can take to help victims: •

• •

Acknowledge – employers should understand the issues and acknowledge their responsibility to help address domestic abuse. They should enable staff to openly discuss the topic and provide support; Respond – they should review policies and processes so they are able to respond to a domestic abuse claim supportively; and, Refer – they should provide access to organisations that can help affected employees.

Audi e-tron 55 quattro

WE CAN’T AVOID THE FUTURE - ELECTRIC CARS WILL BECOME THE NORM. If Audi have their way they will be leading the German charge. The company is said to be investing as much as £12.5bn in electric mobility and autonomy. Showing their confidence in the technology Audi offer e-tron buyers a battery warranty for up to 8 years, or 160,000km, whichever comes sooner. The fully electric e-tron I have been driving this month has stylish looks and as you’d expect there is little to say ‘electric car’ from a distance. It is fully loaded with electronics and driver aids that are expected these days in premium cars. These include lane departure warning, Pre-sense Front and Basic, a rear-view camera and most interestingly on some model’s unique virtual door mirrors. These will take

some getting used to for many I think. At 4.9 metres long, the e-tron lies between the larger Q7 and smaller Q5 in terms of size, but at just 1.6m tall it’s lower than both and I feel it has a sportier stance than many cars in this sector. On the road the weight of the batteries is not noticeable, the e-tron will hit 60mph in under 5.5seconds. The quattro system gives you confidence on the road and I enjoyed the high driving position. It’s a long car and parking in carpark bays can be an interesting experience as with any of the current bread of large SUVs. Inside it is luxurious with touch screens that resemble tablets and app style functions that we are all

familiar with. So how does the e-tron do for distance? The car has a range of up to 237 miles on a single charge under stringent test conditions (there is a e-tron 50 being launched in 2020 with an expected 185 mile range). Recharging is possible in a number ways: at home, via a domestic socket or, for a reduced charging time, with a specially fitted wallbox; or on the road, via high-power charging stations. Where available, the e-tron can be replenished at 150kW terminals that can recharge the battery to 80% within 30 minutes and 100% within 50 minutes. The UK government is keen for people to take up electric driving and provide a plenty of incentives. The Plug-In Car Grant, is currently worth £3,500 toward the price. Employers can benefit from installing a charging station if they apply to the Workplace Charging Scheme. It gives £500 off the cost of installation of electric charging points to encourage more employees to go electric in the future. For Company car drivers car will have no benefit in kind to pay in 2020/2021 with an increase by 1% each year after up to 2023.

I have driven the future and it’s electric. For more information speak to Mark Francis at Poole Audi 01202 775050 / www.pooleaudi.co.uk/business

References: What does a recruiter do with them? References. They are an integral part of the job process, but do you know why? Recruiters will often ask for them at some point during the job process, traditionally before or after the interview, and you may feel that sheer panic of being spied – not to worry, we’re here to help. In fact, references actually tell a lot about a person. After all, if you deceive your way through an interview, your references are pretty much the only way to fact-check you. Carly Siden and Nicola Dawson, Commercial Recruitment Consultants, share what happens when it comes to the world of references and tips for what you can do to have a strong CV that positions you as a safe pair of hands. Why Ask For A Reference In The First Place? Realistically, they aren’t always asked for by recruiters – it is on a client by client basis. When recruiters such as TeamJobs work with someone new, that person is given the choice whether or not more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

to disclose references: “At the end of the day, it’s completely up to you. “Candidates should always have references available just in case, as a rule of thumb. Some jobs need these as standard procedure, so you’re barring yourself from a lot of jobs if you aren’t readily prepared.” Those are the thoughts of Carly, who knows that if recruiters have doubts, you should provide some contacts to back you up. Without these, you could go down in the employer’s rankings, as it might look slightly suspicious. Depending on the thoughts of the recruiters, they could be questioning the candidate with the reference, or just looking for a simple go-ahead to employ that reliable person. Even if the references aren’t sent to the client by the recruiter, people such as Carly and Nicola like to know they exist. It’s a general part of the recruitment process, and proves you can tick a box by simply providing some, whether or not they get checked.

TeamJobs Top Tips • If you don’t think someone is going to give you a good reference, don’t get a reference from them • It’s good practice to see if the recruiter/client wants references before applying for the role • Always have multiple references on hand. This can be previous employers, lecturers etc. • Having a variety of references looks good, inside and out of work • When recruiters are looking at your reference, character and work skills are looked at • Always thank your references and be kind to them – they have your back and you want your relationship with them to be watertight TeamJobs are the recruitment consultancy team who do the work for you. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Local businesses mucking in to help special hotel Bournemouth’s Grove Hotel, which is a holiday retreat for cancer patients and those with life threatening illnesses, has been given a massive green-fingered boost. Eco Sustainable Solutions and Dorset Soils and Aggregates joined together to dispose of all the hotel’s green waste. A team of volunteer gardeners created a wonderful space for residents to enjoy. And in doing so they produced a huge pile of cuttings and branches that they don’t have the space to compost. Dorset Soils said they’d provide the logistical expertise to remove it and Eco Sustainable Solutions said they’d recycle it. The businesses in doing so saved the hotel, which is funded by Macmillan Caring Locally, a great deal of money that can now be spent on guests. Hotel manager Brenden Howard said: “These companies have helped us before and we’re extremely grateful to them for removing our waste. “It is good to know that it will be recycled and turned into compost. “Our volunteer gardeners do a wonderful job and have created a lovely garden for our guests to enjoy. “We have 28 rooms and welcome those suffering from cancer or life-threatening illnesses and their families or carers. “We have a nurse here 24/7 and specialist facilities – but most of all we are a normal hotel whose guests come to have a good time. “We also have a beach hut and are owned and operated by Macmillan Caring Locally in Christchurch.”

Peter Hardy from Eco Sustainable Solutions, said: “The hotel is a wonderful place on the East Cliff. “I know our company and Dorset Soils were very happy to do a little bit to help them.” Alison Brencher, sales executive at Dorset Soils, said: “It was a pleasure to be able to help this incredible organisation and see how much it meant to the volunteers, the gardeners and the guests. “We have since heard back from the Macmillan volunteer coordinator, Lucy, who has expressed her appreciation and mentioned how the volunteers feel really valued and can really see the benefits for the patients.” Last year, Eco’s business operations actively prevented an astounding 74,780 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted into the atmosphere. This was as a direct result of the recycling and recovery of over 250,000 tonnes of organic waste, and the generation of electricity from our renewable energy sources. Across all our recycling and energy operations, Eco only produced 3,200 tonnes of CO2e www.thegrovebournemouth.co.uk www.thisiseco.co.uk

Exciting new STEAM Hub for Talbot Health School

The recently completed STEAM Hub at Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth, designed by Western Design Architects (WDA), is an exciting new building which will enable the delivery of Interdisciplinary learning powered by Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) as part of their new curriculum. The Hub will give students access to Virtual Reality, immersive projection, holographic studios, animation tools and green screen facilities as well as access to industry standard equipment. Designed by two female architects at WDA, the Hub embodies the school’s approach to the STEAM curriculum, promoting women in the construction and design industries whilst inspiring students to embrace and foster change. Designed using state of the art BIM technology, the Hub champions innovative design and together with the new curriculum, the school was named one of the most innovative and influential independent schools in the country. The new multifunctional double height auditorium is capable of seating 600, with raked seating that folds away to create either a large open plan space or three flexible learning spaces. The stage is able to support full scale productions and will be available for community hire. The building boasts open plan break out spaces providing study, social and new exhibition spaces. New studios for drama, art, textiles, graphic design and robotics are provided as well as a café on the ground floor which looks through to a new state of the art covered pool with changing facilities. WDA were key in the design of bespoke furniture and seating within the café and entrance area, providing students with intimate spaces to gather and work in collaboration outside of the classroom. Outside, new raised bench seating with soft planting and three full sized netball courts have been creatively positioned around the Hub. Within the planter sits Surge; a 4 metre high red glass sculpture created by local artist Rebecca Newnham. It comprises of three uprights that progressively bend and twist into arrowhead chevrons which echo ripples of a dynamic vortex. Rebecca states ‘that putting art at the heart of a school curriculum is important’ and Surge serves as a visual and interactive piece of art that celebrates this ethos. The contemporary external aesthetic is continued inside the building’s internal spaces with a full height open atrium, exposed steel and services on show, allowing students to fully engage with the architecture of the building. Sustainable building technologies and eco-friendly features employed in the building such as solar panels, natural ventilation and LED window lighting help to highlight current issues to students which are at the forefront of sustainable design for the future. Their engagement with these technologies on a day to day basis will help to foster sustainable and innovative thinking going forward for a generation looking to reduce their carbon footprint and impact within the built environment.
