DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

W

elcome to the March edition of Dorset Business Focus, now in its 3rd edition and proving to be a huge success with the Dorset business community. I’d like to say a big thank you from both Dorset Chamber and our publishing partners Pulford Publicity for the great support and feedback for the magazine since launching in January. To mark Apprenticeship Week on 4th to 8th March, we want to celebrate the value apprenticeships bring to both individuals and businesses. Apprenticeships (and there’s no upper age limit on being an apprentice) offer individuals a fantastic opportunity to both work and earn a wage as well as learn and gain valuable qualifications. For employers, they offer both an excellent recruitment and training solution. Investment in training by businesses is vital if we are to remain competitive in a global marketplace. Many businesses recognise apprenticeships as vital to the future success of their business. However we still have the situation whereby some parents, carers and other influencers of young people view apprenticeships as a lower value option compared to the further or higher education routes. There can

be an assumption that the apprenticeship route is less academic and as such inferior. I have no doubt this view has a major impact on the choices made by many young people. This is a dated and inaccurate view. Apprenticeships now cover a huge range of occupations at all levels of qualification from an intermediate level (equivalent to GCSE’s) right up to level 6 or 7, incorporating a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. As the parent of a 16-year-old who will begin a digital marketing apprenticeship in September, I feel very proud that she is choosing a valuable path that will both introduce her to the world of work and enable her to continue learning and gain valuable marketing qualifications and experience in a great business. Of course, further and higher education also offer great opportunities and career routes for young people – and as I mention, higher level apprenticeships will involve higher education. However we need to continue to focus on educating and informing parents and carers that apprenticeships also offer provide tremendous opportunities to young people of all levels and every option deserves careful consideration when choices are being made. Businesses ‘Hung Out To Dry’ Without Answers In Event Of Unwanted ‘No Deal’ The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has published a list of twenty critical questions that remain unanswered for business in the unwelcome event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal on March 29.

W

ith less than 30 days to go until the UK is scheduled to leave the EU, the publication highlights the many key issues that are still unclear for businesses in a ‘no deal’ scenario on March 29 – from what trade agreements will be in place with countries around the globe, to whether and how firms can move skilled staff between the UK and EU, and which regulations they will need to follow. Many of the unanswered questions reflect fundamental aspects of how companies operate. For instance, the terms of trade agreements can affect pricing decisions, margins, even choice of business location and the geography of supply chains. The absence of clarity and precision has already stifled investment and growth, and is resulting in unnecessary costs, inability to plan and, increasingly, loss of business as customers look elsewhere. 4

March 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

Business has been clear that it does not want a messy and disorderly exit from the EU on March 29. While firms understand that negotiations are still ongoing, they are hugely concerned that the UK is not prepared for all eventualities – and that the sluggish and patchy nature of government planning for ‘no deal’ would become all too apparent in the economy if it is allowed to happen by default. The leading business group - which represents 75,000 firms of all sizes and sectors across the UK employing nearly six million people - is demanding answers to these twenty questions. While government agencies urge business communities to prepare for all scenarios, BCC says they are failing to give firms the tools and information needed to do so. As a result, businesses risk being left hung out to dry. Adam Marshall, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “In less than 50 days, UK firms could face the biggest change to their terms of trade in over a /company/dorset-chamber/

generation, without the information and clarity they need to navigate their forward course. “There is a very real risk that a lack of clear, actionable information from government will leave firms, their people and their communities hung out to dry. “Even those companies trying their hardest to get ready are still in the dark on important matters from contracts through to customs. Many others, who took the decision to wait for the political process to conclude before acting, would face sudden and costly adjustments if a deal is not reached. “It is little wonder that many firms have been holding back on investment, stockpiling, and even opening offices and moving operations and jobs elsewhere. The imperative remains to avoid a messy and disorderly exit on March 29th, but businesses need answers they can base decisions on, no matter the outcome. The lack of clear, precise answers is now causing real damage to many businesses, and to the wider economy.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BREXIT

BCC comments on GDP and trade figures Commenting on the latest UK GDP and trade statistics, published today by the ONS, Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

Business has been clear that it does not want a messy and disorderly exit from the EU on March 29 While firms understand that negotiations are still ongoing, they are hugely concerned that the UK is not prepared for all eventualities

BCC comments on no deal customs announcement Commenting on the announcement by HMRC on Transitional Simplified Procedures for customs in the case of no deal, Ronan Quigley, Executive Director responsible for Trade at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “The priority of business communities across the UK is to avoid a messy and disorderly Brexit on March 29th. In the unwelcome scenario of no deal, we have been fighting long and hard to avoid prolonged checks at the border and gridlock on our motorways. In the case of no deal, it is reassuring that HMRC are introducing these Transitional Simplified Procedures, which will make importing easier by simplifying the declarations at the border and postponing the payment of import duties that would otherwise be due. “These letters to business are important communications and government must do everything it can to let firms know what they’ll need in terms of new documentation to trade with the EU. Many businesses are still in the dark about the benefits of gaining an EORI number in order to maintain continuity of trade if there is no deal – these letters help to highlight their importance and the need for traders to take action.” more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

“The latest data indicates that the UK economy suffered a significant loss of momentum in the final quarter of 2018, with Brexit uncertainty, a slowing global economy and the persistent financial squeeze on consumers and businesses increasingly having a suffocating effect on economic activity. “The slowdown in the fourth quarter largely reflected weaker outturns from manufacturing and construction. In contrast, the services sector was the main driver of growth. The continued decline in business investment is a blackspot for the economy as it undermines the UK’s ability to raise productivity and increase our longterm growth prospects. The widening in the UK’s trade deficit is further evidence that slowing global growth and continued uncertainty over Brexit are making trading conditions for UK exporters more challenging. “It is increasingly likely that the slowdown at the end of 2018 will persist as continued Brexit uncertainty and the raised possibility of a no-deal exit from the EU weigh heavily on UK’s growth prospects. Firms are increasingly reporting having to divert staff, money and investment to protect against chaos of a no-deal Brexit. “It’s vital that government avoids a messy and disorderly Brexit on 29th March as it would be a significant negative shock to the UK economy, damaging communities across the country. These figures underline the importance of ministers standing ready to lift confidence and boost investment intentions.” 5

Dorset Local Industrial Strategy – Call For Evidence

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the business - led private and public sector partnership that aims to promote local economic growth and prosperity across the region – is calling for new evidence to inform the development of a Local Industrial Strategy for Dorset. A strategy to drive Dorset’s productivity and prosperity.

T

he Call for Evidence is open to submissions from all local economic development stakeholders in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Evidence can include data sets, research papers, surveys or strategies that show the importance, innovation and future growth of particular sectors that are likely to bring new technological, skills breakthroughs or become a focus of future growth for the county.

6

Dorset LEP is also looking for relevant information on any of the Government’s Grand Challenges – Artificial Intelligence and data, ageing, future mobility and clean growth that highlight Dorset’s competitive advantage or could get a competitive advantage by 2030. Evidence, along with attachments, should be submitted via email to mhanulova@bournemouth.ac.uk. Further information is available to download here. The deadline for

March 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

evidence is 14 February 2019. Dorset’s Local Industrial Strategy will help to inform local choices, prioritise local action and, where appropriate, help to inform decisions at a national level. It will guide local investment and devolved funding which is granted to Local Enterprise Partnerships by central government and other national schemes. It is a direct response to the Government’s UK Industrial Strategy which aims to boost productivity by backing businesses to create jobs and increase the earning power of people throughout the UK with investment in skills, industries and infrastructure. Jim Stewart, Chair of Dorset LEP comments: “Dorset’s economy is resilient, growing, and has the potential to deliver greater prosperity for our county and beyond for generations to come. “Our Local Industrial Strategy will set forth how Dorset is able to

utilise its strengths to maximise its contribution to UK productivity, identifying long-term priorities to improve skills, increase innovation and enhance infrastructure and business growth. “I encourage companies with an interest in the local economy to respond to this call and help Dorset LEP gain a more in-depth understanding on our competitive advantage or what this could be by 2030.” Dorset LEP will also be hosting a number of workshops to explain findings to date and to seek further input. Details of these will be announced in due course. Please note that we have a huge amount of evidence and we are seeking new evidence. Information we can’t access through other sources or related to a particular business or sectors. Please review the national industrial strategy for more scope. @DorsetChamber

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PRESIDENTS COLUMN

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham

Waking up early this morning for the school bus run to the news on my alarm clock radio I was pleased to hear the British Chamber of Commerce in the headlines.

T

he BCC is challenging the government as we edge closer to the Brexit deadline, claiming businesses are in danger of being “hung out to dry” with many key questions remaining unresolved. Issues such as tariffs still lack clarity. And they have made it clear that the continued uncertainty is causing real damage. We know stockpiling is happening as the fear of the unknown continues. It is a worrying time for many in business, but as a member of Dorset Chamber of Commerce I am reassured to hear the BCC raise its voice to be lead story this morning. We should take comfort that we are being represented assertively and we can only hope that the government is listening. In my own business, Liz Lean PR we have the privilege to work with such a variety of organisations, across all sectors with a mix of internationally, nationally and regionally focused market places. We are hearing entrepreneurs embracing change and ready to hit any challenges head on – they know it is not in our control and we just have to get on with it being as agile and versatile as we possibly can. An open mind and positivity is all we can bring to the party right now, however tough that might seem! It’s fantastic to see the mornings and evenings getting lighter again and the prospect of the spring is in sight. Whether we are yet to see more snow or not, it feels like the depths of winter is behind us, and those nightmare ‘Blue Monday’ days are done and dusted for another year! I’m really not sure these labelled days really help us to be honest; if you didn’t feel ‘blue’ already, once the media hype blasts about it all day long you are sure to think you should be! But SAD syndrome and other mentally challenging conditions are really affecting productivity in the workplace. It is said that over 10 million people are affected by seasonal changes, with the UK being one of the highest to experience the condition due to our variation in weather and daylight hours across the year. Employers can take inexpensive small steps to help their teams navigate those days where they seem to come to and from work in darkness during the winter months. They may be feeling lethargic, have lower concentration levels and may even experience weight gain as a result. Increasing exposure to light is a key factor and simply moving the workspace around to accommodate natural light for employees is a good start. With our offices being based in Sandbanks we are highly exposed to the weather, and whilst we are often blown in the door by gale force winds I always make a point on a bright day – whatever time of the year – to remind my team to “go out and get some sunshine”. For their wellbeing, for their happiness, energy levels, and creativity it is so important. Without doubt some fresh air and exposure to the natural environment does you the world of good and our businesses can only benefit as a result.

Listening and encouraging open communication with our valued people is key, of course when they feel comfortable to discuss what challenges them. Flexible working hours or access to fresh healthy food may be options that will help individuals see winter as less of a hurdle and experience a literal spring in their step as we head out of the darker days. The team at Dorset Chamber has been great in accommodating my (what many might consider crazy) ideas for events and areas of support. I’m keen to see us provide alternative networking activities, offering opportunities for members and non members to meet and chat whilst doing the things that they love, be that yoga (this month!) or cycling or running. Business people are doing things

differently now – thank goodness – and we want to ensure the chamber is representative of that. If you have any ideas for creative ways to network, I’d love to hear them. I hope you are enjoying this new publication which the Chamber team are working hard every month to produce. It is exciting to see so many of our members featured and gritty issues addressed between its covers. The feedback has been amazing and it’s well deserved. Until the next time, have a productive month ahead... and when it comes, go get out in the sunshine!

National Apprenticeship Week 4-8 March 2019

Dorset Chamber supported the 12th National Apprenticeship Week (4-8 March 2019) alongside our Young Chamber programme.

T

his year our focus was on promoting apprenticeships as a very rewarding and worthwhile career path, as well as a viable alternative to attending University. In fact, there are now many degree level apprenticeships that enable you to study at University whilst earning and gathering valuable work experience. We know that there is a skills shortage in Dorset across many sectors. This means there are fantastic opportunities for young people to make their mark with some brilliant companies across a variety of sectors and apprenticeship job roles in Dorset. We urge students and their parents / guardians to approach apprenticeships with an open mind, as there have been changes to the wide range of subjects and levels that can be studied for. This is because the Government introduced the Apprenticeship Levy in 2017, encouraging companies to create apprenticeships in all areas of the workforce. The result is the number of subjects and levels - right up to the equivalent of a Masters Degree, can be studied for, whilst gaining valuable skills and experience in the workplace, and without the cost of University course fees. As a parent myself, my 16-year-old daughter will begin a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship later this year. This will offer her a tremendous opportunity to both earn and gain valuable experience and skills and I am totally supportive of this as a parent. As well as traditional trades and skills, especially in engineering where only half of the 168,000 opportunities are currently being taken up in the UK each year and where companies will invest in training up to degree level, apprenticeship courses are now available in areas such as Digital Marketing, Project Management, Business Administration, Software Development, Accountancy, Information Technology, and Team Leading & Management to support key functions in business. But don’t take our word for it. We have invited winner of the Apprenticeship Ambassador of the Year Award sponsored by Superior Seals at the 2018 Dorset Business Awards to write a series of articles talking about her experience of apprenticeships which will be published on our web site. In the first of these articles, Tilly explains why she chose an Apprenticeship at JP Morgan over University. Ian Girling, Chief Executive, Dorset Chamber 10

Why I Chose An Apprenticeship by Tilly Cutler, winner of Apprenticeship Ambassador of the Year Award, sponsored by Superior Seals at the Dorset Business Awards 2018

I

f you had told me in the summer of 2016 that in two years’ time I would be working for one of the largest investment banks in the world, I wouldn’t have believed you. Why is that? I was dead set on going to university because, unfortunately, it was the only opportunity my school informed me about. My personal statement had been written and all UCAS applications submitted – I was ready to go! However, I was still a little unsure if I had really considered all my options for further education. I still wanted to learn, but liked the thought of getting into a field of work that interested me. When I started looking into the apprenticeship route there were a variety of options suddenly available that university didn’t offer. I embarked on a mission to explore beyond the information provided by my sixth form and to gain a greater understanding of the unknown concept of an apprenticeship. The two words that caught my eye were earn and learn – I wouldn’t be working in the local supermarket at weekends and spending 9 hours a day in a lecture hall; I would be experiencing a full-time role and studying for an industry-recognised qualification while still being able to enjoy my free time. During my research I came to realise that, for me, university simply couldn’t match the opportunities that were available through an apprenticeship. I now work in a fascinating business, communicating with individuals across the globe on a daily basis. At J.P. Morgan I’m considered a valued employee, with no less importance than someone with a lot more experience. Choosing to pursue an apprenticeship over university also means that I have no

student debt – I am paid a competitive annual salary as an apprentice, which will only increase going forward as I progress through the company. The apprenticeship programme guarantees us a role in the bank after we have successfully completed the 18 month training period, subject to performance. There are also apprenticeship providers, including J.P. Morgan, that now offer employees the opportunity to work towards a degree qualification at the same time as learning on the job – some may say this is the best of both worlds! Being an apprentice has allowed me to grow as an individual and picture where I want my career to be in 10 years’ time. I feel lucky to not only gain qualifications while working, but also develop transferable skills that I may not have had exposure to at university.

Being an apprentice has allowed me to grow as an individual and picture where I want my career to be in 10 years’ time

/company/dorset-chamber/

There is still an out-of-date stigma surrounding apprenticeships, however, in 2019 there are so many opportunities that apprenticeships allow young people to get into interesting and diverse businesses and fields. My top tip: get informed, then get ahead! I am in an incredibly strong position that I may not have grown into if I had gone to university.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships: Good For Business We speak to Paul Tansey, Managing Director of Poolebased Intergage and last year’s Dorset Chamber President about apprenticeships. As President Paul campaigned for business and education to come together to promote the benefits of apprenticeships to young people. Paul led Dorset Chamber’s initiative to work with the Careers and Enterprise Company to deliver the Careers and Apprenticeships Show at the BIC in 2018 – Dorset’s largest ever careers show. Why are you so passionate about apprenticeships? Intergage was an early adopter of the apprenticeship scheme and we have started the careers of many young people through the scheme. More than 5 software developers, several in customer care and digital marketing and one of our early apprentices of 5 years ago was recently employing her own apprentice. We’ve seen the value apprenticeships can bring and it’s a truly beautiful thing to see a young person with the right personal attributes mature into an effective member of the team. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of running a business. What impact do you think the Apprenticeship Levy has had on Dorset businesses? For small businesses it’s had no effect at all. As such, most Dorset businesses are unaffected. It’s only an issue for those larger employers (£3m+ annual payroll) for whom it feels like an additional tax burden they could do without. Do you think employers beyond traditional ‘apprenticeships industries’, such as engineering and construction, are now fully on-board with apprenticeships and the levy? There is still work to do in promoting apprenticeships to business owners but I’ve seen the local colleges doing great work in this area – Matthew Butcher at Poole College has been a hero for apprenticeships in Dorset. Where do you think Dorset’s current skills gaps are and what do you think we can do about them? Skill gaps are everywhere. Almost every growing business sees recruitment as its number one challenge. We are at full employment; with fewer Europeans seeking to live and work here we will soon be marketing the UK as a great place to live and work both to Europeans and nonEuropeans to bring skilled workers here. You spent a great deal of your time as president speaking directly to young people about their futures, are they are getting a full picture of what career opportunities are available? It’s improving but it needs more Dorset businesses to work hard to promote the opportunities for employment right here in our county. As awareness of apprenticeships grows, bright young people realise they have a choice to earn while they learn and we businesses ought to see an opportunity to retain more of our talent. Schools also need to engage better with their business. A few schools do that well – including Poole High School, Lytchett Minster School, Parkstone and Poole Grammar Schools, Bournemouth School for Girls and QE - but most – under pressure from OFSTED – seem very focused on the grades they have to produce and not focused enough on the life journey their young people are embarked on. I appreciate that being under public pressure to achieve grades under ever-tighter budgets keeps schools very stressed and very busy. This said, the role of education must be to ready young people for the next stage of their lives and interacting with businesses to understand what this looks like is a huge yet, under-promoted part of that journey. Government should also be investing in educating parents to ensure that the apprenticeship message is better understood. Parents will ultimately be the biggest influence on most young people and it’s key that parents better understand the opportunities their young people have. There was a huge push from businesses last year from the Careers and Apprenticeships, Young Chamber, Dorset Chamber, how can we continue this momentum? Dorset Chamber members should unite behind the Young Chamber cause. Joan Senior is doing great work to promote engagement between Dorset businesses and schools and to realise Ian Girling’s vision. It’s in all our best interests to do our bit for the community, our young people and our own businesses. Businesses must see themselves as training and education providers too and as such, they are entitled to engage with our young people. Schools need to see business as a natural partner and engage more. Dorset Chamber has provided a platform for this engagement but I’d like to see more schools doing what Lytchett Minster’s Head did last year - coming to speak with business at business events and holding events at the school in partnership with Dorset Chamber and the CEC. Businesses can support the next generation through Dorset Chamber’s Young Chamber programme. Contact Joan Senior on 01202 714817 for more information. 12

YAAN

Did you choose an apprenticeship when leaving school? Ask yourself, how did you hear about apprenticeships? There are so many students unaware of apprenticeships or they have the wrong perception of what they’re all about. The reality is, an apprenticeship can lay the foundation for building a really successful career. In November 2017, National Apprenticeship Service launched a new Young Apprentice Ambassador Network (YAAN), comprising a group of current and former apprentices who are really passionate about promoting apprenticeships. The idea is to get real life apprentices in front of students, parents, teachers and employers, who they can really relate too, to share their positive stories and experiences; which are so powerful and inspiring. In recent years apprenticeships have become very popular, and with the introduction of degree level apprenticeships, it’s a very attractive offer for any young person considering their options. However, there is still somewhat of a stigma attached, which makes promoting them as an excellent career option even more important. Local schools across the country are calling out for apprentice ambassadors to speak to their students. Raising awareness about apprenticeships and what they involve at the earliest opportunity, helps students have the chance to really consider it as an option. The question is, can you inspire the next generation of young people? If you are interested in being a young apprentice ambassador, you can apply online https://amazingapprenticeships.com/yaan/apply or if you have any questions, please ask Ben Clarke of Superior and Chair for the South East Young Apprentice Ambassador Network bclarke@Superiorltd.com Twitter @SouthEastYAAN /dorsetchamber

Views On Apprenticeships Change Apprenticeships are a vital part of the skills strategy and we are seeing the traditional, “trades-only” view beginning to change. Why? Because the traditional academic pathways are not the answer for all students, even those who are hitting those top-end GCSE grades. For many, Apprenticeships represent the best route for the individual to build their future career.

N

ationally, the year-on-year figures show that Apprenticeships starts have recovered a little after a period of decline. However despite this growth, numbers of 16-18 year olds are still falling. Here at The College we have seen stronger growth than nationally in 2018-9. So far, so good. However, dig a little deeper and other trends begin to emerge. For example, nationally the number of 16-18s starting Apprenticeships are down by 2%. However, at Bournemouth & Poole College are up by 14%. Now here’s the rub; it may surprise you to know that the vast bulk of national growth can be attributed to adults and higher level. Apprenticeships for those aged 25+ are up by 43%, and those completing a Level 4 or above are up by a staggering 99%. If we adjust for the impact of the level 4+ Apprenticeships, then the national performance is actually only up by +6%. Ours remains unchanged at +16%. While developing your workforce through Apprenticeships is obviously a great idea, we know that Dorset has an ageing workforce. Therefore, we must not lose sight of the need to train and develop the next generation, which Apprenticeships are perfect for. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

This is especially key in sectors such as care, hair and beauty, and hospitality; which are all forecast for growth. Collectively, we need to be developing the talent pipeline to ensure that we, the business community, are ready to capitalise on these opportunities. Our Apprenticeship work brings us into contact with our local school network. We devote a lot of time to communicating opportunities with them; promoting the rich opportunities that our local businesses offer. We regularly attend careers events, information sessions, and assemblies all with the aim of raising awareness and promoting aspiration. Another reason for our Apprenticeship success is the emphasis and resource we dedicate

to Employability Skills. As we know, employability is not just being able to write a CV, fill in an application form and negotiate an interview – vital though those things are – we are talking about a set of skills, behaviours and personal attributes that enable us to be successful not just in employment but in life. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PENSIONS

It Pays To Be Proactive On The Increase Of Automatic Enrolment Contributions Employers are being urged to take steps now to be ready for the increase due to come into force in April.

F

rom April 6 the amount needing to be paid into a workplace pension will increase to an overall minimum of eight per cent. Carmel LewisLapthorn, Dorset Chamber head of finance and administration, said: “The increase in monthly auto-enrolment may result in a decrease in take home pay for some workers if they do not receive an annual pay rise. “Without this increase in contributions, retirement would be unaffordable for many. “Putting procedures in place at an early stage will help ease the administrative burden and make for a smoother changeover. “It will avoid any last minute rushes, and also ensure than the extra cost to the business of increased contributions is factored into staffing budgets sooner rather than later. “Employers should be checking with their payroll provider and pension provider to ensure plans are in place well in advance of the April deadline.” She added: “It pays to be proactive when it comes to pensions and financial matters. “It should be noted that staff can opt out of the scheme by contacting your pension provider.” Under the Pensions Act 2008, employers must enrol staff in a workplace pension scheme and contribute towards it. It is the employer’s responsibility to implement any phased increases,

such as the one coming into force on April 6. Currently, the employer minimum contribution is two per cent and the employee contribution is three per cent – making a total of five per cent. From April of this year, the employer minimum contribution will be three per cent. If an employer pays the minimum, the employee will make up the five per cent difference to eight per cent. Employers are able, if they chose, to pay more than their minimum three per cent so their employees won’t need to pay as much. The increases do not apply to any businesses using a defined benefits scheme or if a business is already meeting the eight per cent minimum. Tax relief and rules for different types of schemes may make a difference so businesses are urged to make the necessary checks.

Employers should be checking with their payroll provider and pension provider to ensure plans are in place well in advance of the April deadline

Electric Or Hybrid Vehicles – The Future Choice For Company Car Drivers? Alternative Route Leasing are finding this question being asked more so now than ever before, and for a very good reason. As we move closer to the end of the tax year, it’s a reminder that anyone who enjoys the benefits of running a company car, will shortly receive a brown envelope with a letter advising of their new tax code for the coming tax year. For the company car driver, your car, will more than likely cost you more than last year. The company car has always been perceived as a real benefit, and in many circumstances it still is. However, now is the time to choose wisely. Benefit in kind tax rates are increasing in future tax years at greater levels than many company car drivers realise. Many new cars are acquired via lease, with the intention to remain in that vehicle for three to four years. With projected tax increases, it is highly likely the tax you pay in year three or four, will be significantly more per month than when you took delivery of the car. Neil Carlton, Director of Alternative Route Leasing, said “My business partner Andrew Garaway and I have been suggesting for many years now, that company car drivers should seek as much advice as possible before choosing the car they will be running, and not fall into the classic ‘let your heart rule your head’ as this could prove very costly in the future”. There are plenty of low emission vehicles available now. Within the next few years the choice will increase significantly. As things stand with planned tax legislation, the benefit in kind charge for pure electric vehicles is reducing significantly from the 2020/2021 tax year. One of Neil’s clients was advised that her monthly tax cost, for the car she has chosen for the 2019/2020 tax year, will be £187.33 per month. Assuming the current rulings don’t change, for the 2020/2021 tax year, her tax cost will reduce to just £23.41 per month. Many company car drivers are now taking this on board; and using these savings as an effective way of securing a pay rise in 15 months time. Now of course a pure electric vehicle won’t suit some people due to the limited driving range, but there are Hybrid options which will travel further. Mainstream manufacturers are now coming to the market with electric vehicles that will cover 250 miles plus on a single charge. These cars will soon be at a price point similar to current petrol/diesel equivalent models. There is huge change coming over the next few years in respect of the choice of hybrid and electric cars. It’s imperative that company car drivers think very carefully before choosing their next car. The tax costs are increasing significantly, certainly in the medium term. The Directors of Poole-based Alternative Route Leasing suggest proper advice is sought and all options considered before entering into any form of long-term vehicle lease. However, there are car choices available to mitigate these tax increases. So, are Electric or Hybrid cars the future choice for company car drivers? For many it will. Neil says, “One thing is for sure, whether you are a company car driver, fleet manager or owner of a local business, that offers cars to employees as part of their remuneration package; the choice you make now could potentially save your valuable staff money in the future. Maybe it could be seen as giving a pay rise without actually giving a pay rise.” Neil and Andrew can be contacted on 01202 821354 or find them on LinkedIn 24

Saffery Champness’ audit senior manager Nigel Ballard explained, “We are delighted to have been appointed to provide pro-active accountancy and taxation advice to Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd – the Estate’s commercial organisation, as well as the National Motor Museum Trust and Countryside Education Trust charities. Beaulieu is such a distinctive and prominent family visitor attraction and we’re extremely proud to be working with them. Steeped in history, it is one of the leading visitor attractions in the UK and well renowned with both locals and tourists, boasting a world-famous collection of vehicles. Nigel continued, “Saffery Champness enjoys a wealth of experience in the notfor-profit and landed estate sector and is looking forward to supporting them in the compliance, audit and taxation side of their businesses. By providing a bespoke service we will be helping them to achieve their ambitious objectives and aims.” Beaulieu Organisations are a collection of independent legal entities that all sit within

the Beaulieu Estate, which spans over 7,000 acres, located in the heart of the New Forest National Park. Beaulieu has been owned by the Montagu Family for over four centuries, and has a rich history dating back over 800 years. The Group of organisations are split into three separate entities, those being a limited company and two charities.

BOFA Launches New Purepod For Chiropodists A new dust extraction system has been developed by BOFA International to protect chiropodists from potentially harmful emissions that can cause long-term health problems. The PurePOD is designed to remove harmful airborne dust generated in clinical working environments, notably during procedures such as reducing calluses, corns and filing and drilling nails. Research has shown that without local exhaust ventilation, dust can remain present in the air for up to 10 hours. “The dust particles associated with these procedures are generally less than 5 microns in size, with around 70% of these smaller than 0.8 microns,” says John Horsey, technical manager at BOFA. “At these sizes, the dust is not visible to the human eye and the use of a face mask will not afford the desired protection, placing chiropodists and technicians at risk of inhaling the dust. Once these particles enter the nasal cavity, they can trigger conditions such as rhinitis, and if eyes are not protected, can cause conjunctivitis. Should they pass into the alveoli of the lungs, they can lead to long-term respiratory problems, particularly occupational asthma.” BOFA’s compact PurePOD extraction unit uses a multi-layered two-stage filtration system comprising pre and high efficiency particle filters to capture airborne contaminants and return clean air back into the environment. It has foot pedal operation, low noise level and a mobile extraction arm that can be

manoeuvred into any position for maximum performance with minimal procedural obstruction. BOFA is a world leader in fume and dust extraction technology. The company has a Queen’s Award for Innovation and invests heavily in the development of local exhaust ventilation systems to help customers enhance productivity while maintaining workplace environments that are healthy and compliant. www.bofainternational.com

Marina Exhibitor Sales Flying For The 2019 Poole Harbour Boat Show! Marina exhibitor sales for the 2019 Poole Harbour Boat Show (PHBS), which takes place from 7-9 June, are breaking previous event records and organisers are urging interested exhibitor companies to get in touch in order not to miss out on being a part of the popular boat show. Poole Harbour Commissioner’s Marinas Manager Kerrie Gray advised, “Last year we had a record 115 boats in the water, this year we’ve seen a phenomenal response with the majority of our 2018 exhibitors renewing to come back! Exhibitors will once again include Ribeye, Sealine, Beneteau Power and Sail and of course our in-association sponsor Sunseeker. We’ve also seen lots of new company enquiries and bookings and this means we have already sold over 75% of our available marina spaces. There’s also been a very positive number of enquiries for our quayside spaces - we put this down to the previous successes of the event, with 2018 proving to be particularly popular.” Continuing, Kerrie enthused, “The PHBS is now in its 5th year. We welcomed over 32,000 visitors in 2018 and have been recognised as the fastest growing boat show in the UK. We’re also the biggest FREE to attend boat show on the South coast. Visitor numbers have increased year-on-year, and we’ve forged some extremely positive and strong partnerships” PHC Marketing Director, Tracy Payne said, “The 2019 event, which is being run in association with Sunseeker International, is gaining significant momentum and we are particularly pleased at the attention and support that the boat show is receiving. People from within the marine industry and many local businesses and organisations are keen to find out more and learn how they can get involved. 2019 promises lots of expansion and more focus on our event objectives of getting people ‘on the water’, particularly younger people. There will be many varied opportunities to get on the water throughout the boat show weekend, including workshops taking place on the Tall Ships and ‘Try a Boat’ sessions.” For more information contact Kerrie 01202 649488 or www.pooleharbourboatshow.co.uk more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Apex Cb Working With The Equity Release Council As Apex’s Equity Release specialist, I have been asked to join an important project by the Equity Release Council (ERC). We aim to look at how equity release is communicated not only to the public but to financial advisers, the media, age-related charities, and local government. The Council recognise that there are still many ‘myths’ and inconsistencies in how people think about equity release. Many of these date from the days before equity release became a fully regulated product. Both products and the delivery of advice are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, so consumer protection is better than ever. However perceptions amongst the public and media don’t reflect the current situation, so I will be working with the ERC to overcome this. With over 25 years experience in financial services I believe this product will become an integral part of financial planning rather than a product of last resort. I expect to be involved in this project through 2019. We feel it is important that we remain at the forefront of developments in all areas of financial planning. We are engaging proactively with the Equity Release Council and other influential groups to ensure that this happens. Keeping our clients well informed is vital when they are making important decisions. This is especially true when using their housing wealth as part of retirement planning. Equity Release requires specialist knowledge and skills that we need to keep up to date. I am confident that my involvement with this national project will benefit existing and new clients of Apex in Poole and across Dorset. For more information visit www.apexcb.com 33

Dorchester Chamber Joins The Plastic-Free Campaign Plastic-free Dorchester was the theme of Dorchester Chamber’s February networking breakfast at The Dorford Centre in Dorchester. The breakfast – hailed as a huge success – was attended by Mayor, Cllr David Taylor, more than 80 chamber members and special guests, the children from Damers First School. Radio Solent was also present and broadcast live from the event. As part of the breakfast the children, – aka The Damers Eco Ambassadors – gave a special presentation to remind Chamber members of the importance of looking after our planet and how even simple office consumables can have an impact. “What a wonderful event,” said Steve Farnham, President of Dorchester Chamber for Business. “It is great to see the passion that is in Dorchester to help it achieve ‘plastic free’ status and how the different organisations have come together. “I must thank our secretary, Miranda Woodgate, who organised the event, for pulling everything together. Edd Moore certainly has some great backing from the children at Damers First School.

March 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

They provided an amazing performance to finish off a truly inspiring event.” Edd Moore, eco co-ordinator and teacher at Damers First School, gave an inspiring talk about the school's journey to gain Plastic Free School Status. He highlighted the great work they are doing to encourage Poundbury businesses to reduce the use of single-use plastics and help with recycling items, which in turn provides a revenue stream for the school. “What a fantastic experience and platform for the children to share their Plastic Free Dorchester Campaign with the members of Dorchester Chamber for Business,” said Edd.

/company/dorset-chamber/

“This event has allowed the children of Damers to get into the heart of businesses in Dorchester making them aware of the problems of single-use plastic. We hope many businesses will now sign up and support Plastic Free Dorchester by agreeing to remove three single-use plastics from their business or finding three sustainable alternatives.” The school is also involved in other eco projects and are currently asking businesses to give up three single-use plastics or find three alternatives instead. Businesses will be asked to sign up to the scheme to help Dorchester achieve plastic-free status, alongside other towns in Dorset, such as Lyme Regis and Wimborne.

What Does Growth Mean To You?

N Enhanced Celebrates 25 Years Of Helping Businesses Grow In 1994, three ambitious young businessmen formed a computer company by the name of Enhanced Computer Solutions. Their aim was to offer premium, cost-effective service from an enviable portfolio of skill and experience. Simon White and Mark Pollock took on the roles of technical and support manager respectively. Now, 25 years later following a management buyout in 2007, Simon is CEO supported by Mark and fellow directors in one of the most successful and fastest growing technology companies in the South of England. The company has overseen a great deal of change over this time. They now have a turnover in excess of £5 million and completed a rebranding – as Enhanced – in 2008. Simon however, insists the fundamental aspects and company beliefs haven’t changed. “Our mission and ideals are the same as they were 25 years ago, to constantly excel in everything we do,” he says. Enhanced are recognised for their expertise in working with companies who also believe that IT is at the core of their business growth. They make it their business to make sure the IT technology and services their clients need integrates effortlessly into their existing business. “We continue to invest in our products, service and people,” says Simon. “As National award winners for our customer service and support we are determined to continue our promise of 25 years ago, to be exceptional in everything we do. “To achieve this we have to ensure we continue to offer the best possible professional services from a team dedicated to its people.” Enhanced have ambitious plans for the next stage of their growth. They are investing heavily in the infrastructure division of their company. This includes growing their engineering, pre-sales and sales team, offering business forums for existing and new business customers and constantly looking to be one step ahead in the market place, a market place which is constantly changing and offering new innovative solutions. “Over the years we have learnt many lessons and embraced the ongoing fast and furious changes in our industry. The role of an IT consultant has changed dramatically and we believe that any successful company should now view their IT consultant as part their strategic team, as they would their accountant, solicitor and business advisor. It is our job to keep our clients up to date with changes, innovations and latest thinking. We are passionate about growth and are focused on helping our clients achieve theirs.” “Thank you to all those involved who have made the last 25 years such an exciting challenge. Our promise to you is to keep challenging ourselves, keep learning and above all embrace all that the future brings. We will continue to deliver IT you can count on.” Simon White, CEO, Enhanced. 38

ormally, one of the first things said to us when we sit down for a meeting with a new client is ‘I really want to make the business bigger!’ and our response is ‘Do you mean better?’. Seems like an odd thing to say... haven’t we both just described the same goal? Well no, not really. ‘Bigger’ means literally as it sounds, ‘more’, but ‘better’ can mean different things to all of us, especially at varying stages in our lives, bigger is not always better and your plan needs to be appropriate for what you are seeking to achieve. Do you in fact know what your ultimate goal is? Most of us just want a better standard of life, but that comes in a plethora of forms too! So what is it you really want and is there a specific milestone you are seeking to reach? Or have you got yourself into a perpetual mindset of more, more, more? Here’s a few things to think about: Growth plans always involve headaches, sorry that’s just the way it is and they are worse if you aren’t prepared or haven’t looked at improving what you’re doing now. So, to ultimately make things better and before venturing down the ‘build, build, build’ path, can you get smarter and more efficient? (hint: I have never met a single company that couldn’t improve somewhere). Look at your team, clients, processes, technology, marketing, products, opportunities, competition, website, social media, suppliers, services etc and ask yourself: what have we been overlooking? What could be improved? If you truly see yourself at the forefront in every aspect of what you’re doing, then yes you can move on to building up. But if we’re being really honest, we all have things we need to change before expanding and we don’t all want bigger companies for the sake of it. The next issue is where do you start? You’ll probably find (like every other business owner), there is more than one area of concern or in need of rejuvenation, maybe lots. Well don’t try and tackle everything at once, there is nothing worse than stacking a load of problems in front of you and trying to hurdle all of them in a single bound.

• •

• • • •

If you break down your issues into manageable chunks and tackle them systematically, you’ll find it a lot less daunting. If you can’t see the wood for the trees, get someone else to look at your problems, maybe you’ve just built them up in your head for too long (everyone who reads this can make reference to that in their own lives). If budget may be a concern, what can you tackle utilising the resources already at your disposal? If time is restricted, what roles in your business could be automated? If skills are limited, can you/your team be trained better? Can you outsource to third parties or create partnerships? If you’ve got a stunted geographical territory, can you reach further?

You may be able to tackle more clients or projects with the team you already have, without the extra expenditure! When you drill down, most business owners are looking to action a plan which ultimately leads to personal improvements, more money, time with the family, nicer clients (who doesn’t want that), less pressure, more opportunities, better health etc etc. You’ve probably got the ability to do that now without the expense and added stress, just take a bit of time for reflection. And ask yourself ‘Do I want bigger or do I want better?’ ‘What does growth mean for me?’ For more information contact Sam Howell Consultancy Ltd www.sam-howell.co.uk / 01202 403 955

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / DORSET GATEWAY

The Dorset Gateway team were delighted to attend the extremely informative Innovation, Commercialisation and Networking: Turn ideas into commercial success Forum, hosted by the Dorset Local Economic Partnership (DLEP) at Bournemouth University, on Wednesday 30 January 2019. The aim of “ICAN” was to provide inspirational and helpful content for individuals or businesses of any size who have great ideas and are keen to stay ahead of the game.

D

uring uncertain times for business in the UK, innovation is key to maintaining a competitive advantage. New ideas are vital and the event helped determine how to turn ideas into reality, how to get innovation projects funded, who to turn to for support and guidance and crucially, how to turn these ideas into a commercial success. Josie Gough, Innovate UK’s representative for the South West, provided an overview outlining the importance of Innovation as a key driver for continued success of the UK economy. Innovate UK fund projects which are new or “disruptive” to industry or technology and look to challenge the status quo. Statistics show that application numbers from Dorset businesses are currently the lowest in

the South West region, with only 7% of Innovate UK grant funding coming to Dorset. Our priority is to raise the profile of Innovate UK, increase knowledge and awareness and encourage a larger number of businesses to participate in the competitions. The DLEP’s Director Lorna Carver spoke about Dorset’s Local Industrial Strategy(LIS), brought about by the Industrial Strategy White Paper 2017, which identified five foundations of productivity: Ideas; People; Infrastructure; Business Environment and Places, all of which are considered to be the vital aspects of economic growth. The LIS also identified four grand challenges; Artificial Intelligence & Data Economy, Clean Growth, Future of Mobility, and Ageing Society which focus on global trends which will transform our future and where innovation

is key. DLEP wholly supports innovation and fully funds the Dorset Gateway Service which provides practical support and guidance to any business with a Dorset postcode and also offers a free Bid Writing Application service. Dave Jones, Principle Engineer from Dyson spoke about “The Dyson Experience”, Innovation, what it was like to work and “Innovate” in the early years at Dyson and how the process has evolved to date. Dave then promoted the incredible outcomes achieved from Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP). This works when a company is seeking a solution to a problem and via a KTP Network, can hire a graduate who, together with expertise from Academics and university resources, work with the company to develop a solution. The overarching message from the 3 main speakers at the event (from Dyson, 3 Sided Cube and Bournemouth University) was that there is no “secret formula” to creating an innovative idea. Great ideas can be comprised of many different elements but for an idea to be successfully progressed, it is essential to have to have the full backing from the very top of an organisation.

If you are interested in finding out about support for innovation in your business, please contact the Dorset Gateway: 01202 714 800 or visit the Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s website: www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/business-support/

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Don’t Let Daily Pressures Obscure The Big Picture Jacqui Purdy, executive coach and founder of Here to There, offers insight and advice for business owners who find themselves submerged beneath their day-to-day workload. One of the commonest complaints I hear is from directors and owners who know they are spending too much time working in the business, and not enough working on the business. The risk in getting too absorbed in the day-to-day is that the bigger picture gets neglected. Long-term objectives and strategies don’t get the attention they need, leading to missed opportunities and slower growth, or lost motivation and burn-out. Spotting the danger signs is rarely enough Most people I work with are aware of the risks and conscious that they need to dedicate more time and effort to working on the business than being immersed in it. But what’s interesting to me as a coach is why it can prove so difficult to make the change that’s so clearly necessary. The most frequent reason I’m given is simply a lack of time. But that’s more often a symptom than an underlying cause, as we all have the power to divide our time up differently if we choose to. So we need to delve deeper and ask ourselves why we struggle to balance the competing demands of urgent vs important and of short-term vs long-term. An appearance of rationality A client of mine who runs a professional services business had long been using the familiar important/urgent matrix for planning and prioritising their workload. But they agreed when challenged that it didn’t really help – they were still finding the same unresolved items on their ‘important’ list. When we explored this in more depth we discovered that it was how my client felt about each item on the list that influenced their actions, and not where it was plotted in the matrix. It was their sub-conscious preferences and biases that were dictating what was dealt with and what was ignored. Once they understood the less obvious, more emotional drivers that they attached to their work, it became much easier to set priorities that would be respected and acted on – and to adjust for the unconscious responses that had previously got in the way. Only do what you can do Of course there are still only a finite number of hours in the day. So what do you do when all the necessary tasks simply can’t be done in the time available? Short answer: seek help Many of my clients describe finding and securing the right support as the most significant step-change in successfully managing their business. Freeing themselves up to work at the macro level is crucial for their growth as business owners and for the growth of their business. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

But it can be hard to let go and to delegate, especially in smaller companies where the owner is used to performing many different roles. So make a habit of checking in with yourself and asking who else might be able to do what you’re doing right now. Focus your effort on the work you’re uniquely qualified for. And never be afraid to ask for help. Don’t assume – measure We are all prone to making assumptions that, if they remain unchallenged, quickly harden into ‘fact’, so it’s important to seek measurable evidence and to test our assumptions. One of my clients who works in the performing arts felt they weren’t dedicating enough time to evolving their creative strategy, blaming their ‘lack of discipline’ and beating themselves up for ‘frittering away’ the day. But when we scoped out what their ideal day and ideal week would look like, and started tracking how their days and weeks were actually spent, it turned out the two were remarkably similar. The big difference now is that they don’t waste their time worrying that they’re wasting time. Tips for staying vigilant Carving out that quality time to look at the big picture is not a once-only action; it needs to become a habit. Here are a few simple ways to stay alert and defend your way of working on your business and not get submerged in the day-to-day. Draw up a ‘Time Pie’ and segment it into your ideal day or week, then record how you actually spend your time and compare this with your ideal. Where are the variations? What do you get hijacked by? What do you put off, and do you know why? Identify the least productive time and reallocate that to working on the business. Create an important/urgent matrix but take a few minutes to be honest with yourself about how you feel towards each task. For the ones you don’t feel good about, ask yourself whether you can adopt a more positive attitude and develop a more productive emotional response. Ask yourself if you could delegate more. If you have a team, are you investing in the right people to enable you to take that step away? Make sure you spend time coaching and teaching and not just telling and directing. If you are a sole trader, look outside the business and ask for support – most people will be happy to help, so don’t be shy of asking. By understanding the needs of coach drivers and making visits easy and comfortable, it demonstrates that we take the value of their business seriously and hopefully, this will mean that they will return with more visitors in the future.” Carol Scott, Chair of Poole Attractions Group on the Bournemouth and Poole Tourism Management Board, said: “This award is just fantastic and shows how important it is for local businesses that the Council and Tourism work together. Poole welcomes thousands of coach visitors each year and each visit is a chance to really show off all the town has to offer especially as many return with families and friends. It’s something to be really proud of and will help to build visitor numbers in the future.”

A

rts University Bournemouth welcomed alumni, friends and past staff back to campus to celebrate 25 years of the Creative Events Management course, one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. The event provided a nostalgic return to the university community for over 100 CEM alumni, celebrating their achievements since graduating. Professor Stuart Bartholomew, AUB’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said: “Celebrating 25 years of the progress of this course is a great occasion, and the spread of talent represented by our CEM alumni is impressive. “The course has acted as a launching pad for so many successful careers in the events industry, and they are engaged at a global level across a range of sectors. Our students have gone on to work for world leading organisations and include Holly Brooker, who has worked for Stormzy and Kylie Minogue. Lucy Woodbridge, Head of Visitor Events at the Natural History Museum, who created a fourmonth leaving party for Dippy the Diplodocus at the museum attracting thousands of visitors, before he left on a UK tour. Events are about having your fingers on the pulse on what the public will respond to, which our graduates can achieve in abundance.” The event also saw inspiring speeches from Richard Wright, the very first course leader for the degree, and led the course for sixteen years, CEM

Caterpillar’s Amazing Feat For Charity When staff at Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd in Ferndown pledged to support a local cancer charity, they had no idea of just how far they would go. Four years on they have run marathons, biked, bowled, pulled a 35,000kg aeroplane along a runway and even lost hair - raising almost £30,000 for Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF) in the process. The fundraisers unveiled their final, fundraising total of £27,671.81 in a special presentation to DCCF founder Eve Went and Chairman Chris Thomas. Jude Castell, who has led the fundraising throughout and even shaved her head for DCCF said: “When we first heard about the charity we knew we wanted to do something, but none of us ever dreamed how passionate we would become about it.” She continued: “We have done some incredibly exciting things together and as well as giving us a great deal of satisfaction to know we are helping others, I think this has also made us a stronger team.” Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd is a division of the global brand Caterpillar. The company, based at Ferndown Industrial Estate is the leading manufacturer of marine generators and propulsion engines. Jude continued: “One of the highlights for me was meeting someone with cancer who had actually been helped as a direct result of our fundraising.” Jude met Steve Jewell, a self-employed plumber from Broadstone, who was struggling to pay his mortgage while going through cancer treatment. “I’m not ashamed to say I was moved to tears when he told me how our fundraising had helped his family through some very dark times,” said Jude. Dorset Cancer Care Foundation was set up in 2012 and gives grants to families experiencing financial struggles because of cancer. DCCF grants are often used to meet household and transport costs, buy specialist equipment and pay for much-needed short breaks. The charity’s co-founder Eve Went said: “The Caterpillar team came to us in 2014 as fundraisers and they have gone on to become much-loved friends. “Their devotion is incredible, and the team - and their employers who have kindly match funded some of their fundraising - have made a huge impact on families affected by cancer here in Dorset.” DCCF, whose patrons include AFC Bournemouth Chairman Jeff Mostyn and Harry Redknapp, is currently running the High Five Appeal, which asks people to donate a fiver by texting DCCF00 £5 to 70070. You can also donate online at: www.justgiving.com DCCF would also like to hear from Dorset cancer patients who might need its support. An application is simple and if successful, financial help is available very quickly. Holiday Park Operator Hoburne Acquires Eighth Park And Launches New “Hideaway Lodge” Accommodation In a move to strengthen its leisure proposition to holiday makers and holiday home owners, the Hoburne Group has acquired a new holiday park on the edge of Bodmin in Cornwall, which will boast a new range of bespoke luxurious Hideaway lodges. The first phase of this ‘exciting’ acquisition will launch in February 2019. As one of the leading family-run holiday park operators, established in 1912, Hoburne is an expert in providing UK holiday breaks and holiday home ownership already owning seven holiday parks across the most picturesque counties in Great Britain, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and the Cotswolds. Hoburne acquired the new 17-acre site in the village of St Mabyn for its eighth park. With a primary focus on holiday home ownership, the new development at Hoburne St Mabyn will house “Hideaway” lodges and aims to create an idyllic lodge escape for owners and holiday makers, enabling them to relax and unwind in an environment which offers a tranquil quiet space without the busier traditional park facilities and can be used as a base from which to explore the local area. The first phase of the new “Hideaway” lodges development will officially open in February 2019. This includes 25 plots, 17 of which are available for ownership and eight for holidays, as well as a lodge reception for two full-time park management personnel. Hoburne has partnered with Pathfinder Homes to design and develop modern, well-appointed luxury lodges all of which will have the provision for hot tubs built into the private landscaped recreational space. The lodges will be in a choice of three interior design themes - country, coastal and New York loft style. Each home will be built to make the most of the outdoors with a centre lounge living area framed by large glass windows overlooking an external space for entertaining. There are a number of benefits to buying a holiday lodge as a second home. Unlike a bricks and mortar property, stamp duty is not payable and there is no council tax to pay. The communal grounds are all maintained by Hoburne and there is also the facility to use the Hoburne fully-managed letting service. When buying a “Hideaway” lodge, owners will receive a bespoke service which is a unique offering by Hoburne to tailor their

second home package according to lifestyle interests for a genuine ‘home from home’ experience. A storage box will be provided to house useful items such as body boards, buckets and spades, picnic blankets and bicycles. For those in to their home entertainment, a lodge may include the latest Sonos system and games console, and as standard, every lodge will include a wine fridge, a fridge freezer, dishwasher and a washer/drier. As part of the service to both holiday makers and owners, Hoburne will ensure that on arrival, the fridge is stocked with all the essentials. Rosie Kennar, chairman at Hoburne, says: “We are seeing a shift from some of our long-standing guests looking for a quiet home from home experience and we’re delighted to introduce a new exciting park to the Hoburne portfolio. The acquisition of Hoburne St Mabyn enables us to accommodate the rise in popularity of both UK holiday home ownership and the staycation as well as provide an option to those wishing to have a more tranquil experience. The Hideaway lodges at Hoburne St Mabyn will be perfect for anyone looking to escape the pressures of everyday life and ‘get away from it all’ so they can purely enjoy the surroundings of the lodge and use it as a base from which to explore the delights of Cornwall. “Hoburne will take time to get to know each of its owners, so having a Hideaway lodge at Hoburne St Mabyn will be a unique experience to each individual.” Rosie adds: “With the Cornish south and north coasts within easy access and the nationally famous villages of Boscastle, Tintagel and Port Isaac, as well as the charming towns of Padstow and Wadebridge all being close by, St Mabyn provided us with an ideal location to introduce a new park which would offer the perfect location for a second home or holiday retreat at any time of the year. We are on an active search for new parks that suit our criteria.” As well as having Hideaway lodges for sale, an allocation will be available for short break holidays. Hoseasons will be including Hoburne St Mabyn in its top of the range Autograph collection of holiday accommodation. To enquire about ownership at Hoburne St Mabyn, please telephone 01425 687512 or visit www. hoburne.com/ownership. 47

Stuart Hartley, Operations Manager of Innovative Hire says they were thrilled to be involved: “Partnering up with The Italian Villa made perfect sense to us. They’re consistently voted as one of the best wedding venues and we were keen to become a part of that. Having worked on so many events there previously, we know the space well and are confident our range of ‘finishing touches’ for weddings will fit in nicely.” Innovative Hire have worked with the Italian Villa on a number of corporate events in the past but have now shifted their focus to tap into the thriving local wedding industry. This includes a range of wedding furniture, wedding bars and theming and props for weddings. A stand-out item available to hire is their newly refurbished Caravan Bar. The quirky mobile bar is available to be dry-hired for weddings at The Italian Villa, which can be used as an additional bar for reception drinks in their courtyard. Another option would be to make use of the venues stunning garden space, by hiring in a cocktail bar to be built next to their ornamental pond or creating a ‘Vintage Games’

area on the lawns next to the domed temple of Baccus. Justin Cohen, Commercial Manager for The Italian Villa said he was excited by the partnership: “The large choice and high quality of Innovative Hire’s range is what our couples will expect for their special day. We have worked with Stuart and his team on many corporate events and we know that they will give our wedding clients the same excellent service.” The entire range of wedding furniture, wedding bars and theming and props for weddings are available to hire year-round and whilst the majority of weddings traditionally happen in the summer months, it has very much become a year round industry for The Italian Villa. Osprey Ltd Lift A 72.5t Catamaran Using A 1,000t Capacity Liebherr Mobile Crane UK-based Osprey Ltd, a specialist in the onshore and offshore transportation and lifting of heavy or abnormal loads, lifted a 72.5t catamaran using a 1,000t capacity Liebherr mobile crane and a one-over-two Modulift spreader beam configuration beneath its hook. The rigging gear was sourced from FLG Services, the specialist lifting division of A-Plant. Osprey accepted a scope of work from shipbuilder Wight Shipyard to move the vessel from the shed where it was built to the water at Venture Quays, Cowes on the Isle of Wight, before a course was set for its final destination in Austria. The 250-passenger Twin City Liner is 39.7m long, 11.1m wide, and 6.8m high. The first challenge was removing the vessel, which is due to arrive in Vienna in time for the start of the new season at the end of March 2019 from its building. Osprey selected two, six-axle Goldhofer self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) to work in tandem to move the load to within the reach of the Liebherr LTM1800D. The crane was complete with a 36m high rig, designed to accommodate a 3.7m centre of gravity offset and different elevations of the boat’s lifting eyes. A Modulift MOD400 was used at a 29m span beneath 29m long and 26.4m long top slings to balance the lift. Two MOD70H beams were used underneath, one at 5.5m long and the other at 4m. Again, two different lengths of sling were used to connect them to the top beam—3m at the stern (back)

and 3.9m at the bow (front). The slings that met the lifting eyes at the bottom of the rig were all 4m in length. Danny Skidmore, heavy cranes manager at Osprey, said: “We had to work closely with shipbuilders and naval architects, and refer to CAD [computer-aided design], to devise a method of lifting the catamaran safely and completely level. The previous time we lifted such a vessel, we used two cranes in tandem, but mobilising two cranes of that size represents a large-scale operation and high costs, not to mention the disruption it has on the shipyard. We wanted to come up with a way to minimise mobilisation and limit the impact on our client’s busy, marine environment.” See more about Modulift, Poole at www.modulift.co.uk

The Horizon Provides Opportunity With Recruitment ‘All Systems Go’ For PKF Francis Clark’s Expanding VAT Team Chartered accountants and business advisers PKF Francis Clark have introduced another member to their VAT team based in the firm’s Truro office, in preparation for the legislative changes and Brexit complications that 2019 will bring. The firm that is celebrating its Centenary year and has seven offices across the South/South West has recently welcomed Richard Phillips to their office in Cornwall. Richard is the third recruit that has joined the VAT team from HMRC this year, which the firm has described as “HMRC’s loss being PKF Francis Clark’s gain”. Due to increased demand for PKF Francis Clark’s VAT services, the team that provides advice on VAT and customs duty to both clients and nonclients in Cornwall has been subject to significant growth over the years. It has expanded to a total of 17 members across all offices from what was just one VAT specialist for the whole firm ten years ago. Requirement for the team’s specialist advice is only set to rise, with the introduction of Making Tax Digital for VAT (MTDfV) coming into effect in the UK in April 2019. This will mean that the majority of business owners and individuals will be expected to keep their VAT records digitally. This is in addition to the VAT matters that will arise as a result of the impact that Brexit will have on businesses that trade with EC member states, as well as customs duty becoming a bigger issue. As always, the specialist VAT team across the region will continue to provide help, advice and reassurance with compliance and efficiency reviews, training, and guidance across the firm’s client base. Julie Towers, Head of VAT at PKF Francis Clark said: “It remains an exciting time for the firm. Our team has grown rapidly over recent years as we have become well known in the region for the strength of VAT service. We are pleased to welcome Richard to the team, adding to the expertise and experience that we have and helping us to continue to deliver high levels of service to our clients in this complex and important field, especially in what is an uncertain time for UK businesses”. 50

All employers know it is hard to find staff at the moment. The British Chambers of Commerce recently surveyed 6,000 firms and found that problems with hiring were at near-record highs. That means companies have to approach recruitment very differently than they did when there were millions unemployed. But there are ways in which employers can make themselves stand out to candidates. “It is tough,” says Jason Gault, Managing Director of TeamJobs. “But what I think companies need to do is start to concentrate on opportunity. “The realisation for companies is that they have got to create an environment in their business so that the people they want will come and work for them, instead of looking for their competitor.” You Cannot Hire The Old Way “Putting an advert out and waiting for a response is becoming a much smaller part of what we do,” says Jason Gault. “We are becoming much more proactive. We are having to go out and find people and we are using social media to sell ourselves much more on a mobile device than we did even two or three years ago.” Technical Manager Rob Bruce adds: “The old school recruitment processes are no longer worth going down. “Engineers do not want to sit and write CVs. You have got to start putting in place systems such as practical trade testing.” The days when employers could afford to let CVs sit on their desks for several days are also over, says Vicki Reeks, Industrial Manager for TeamJobs. “We live in a society where everything is fast paced. It is right here, right now, everything’s at the click of a button and people lose momentum. You are only as good as your team and if you do not place a value on recruitment and attracting the quality of staff and retaining those you have got, you are always going to be recruiting.” Be The Kind Of Employer People Want To Work For “You have got to sell the company rather than merely selling the position,” says Rob Bruce. “If companies are not doing that, then eventually people are going to steer clear of them. “We have had companies we have worked with in the past that were stuck in their procedures. For instance, if you needed to go off for a doctor’s appointment, you would have to book half a day off. If you worked overtime,

March 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

you would only get paid for 40 hours — you did the overtime for the love of the business. “That company over the last three years have changed things. They have implemented overtime, they have become flexible on working hours and it has become a better place to work. “The people who work for you are selling the company at the end of the day. You can broadcast the company virtues and fancy websites, but that is not going to potentially sell your business. It is word of mouth. The people that are working there, are going to sell it.” Even TeamJobs has taken this journey, Jason Gault says. “Ten years ago, I was very anti-part time working. Ninety per cent of our workforce are female. We have now got some very successful part-time supermums working within our business. I think there are still businesses out there that are very rigid, they don’t give much but they want the world back in return.” Michelle Mitchell, TeamJobs’ Operations Manager, adds: “People want to feel valued and it is not always financial. It could be other things that the company could offer long-term or the candidate can offer to the company. What can you bring to the table that is going to benefit the other party, and not necessarily just tick all the boxes on a job spec?” Approach Things Differently Some businesses need to plan on the basis that skills will be scarce, Jason Gault says. “If you are a company that still relies heavily on a precision engineering workforce, that is a shrinking workforce,” he says. “If you are planning the next 10 years on skilled CNC turners or millers, the clever companies are investing in machinery so they manage to de-skill those roles. Whether we like that or not, that is the reality we are in. “We have just won a contract with a client who says they don’t recruit trying to find a fully skilled end product. They try and find people that are half way there and they train the rest.” Be Good To People For all the changes in the jobs market, an old-fashioned attention to treating people well is all-important. “Recruitment is a people business. We can all get tied down with emails and being social but it is actually bringing it back to grass roots and dealing with people as you would want to be treated,” says Vicki Reeks.

/company/dorset-chamber/

/dorsetchamber

“One of the questions on our application pack is ‘What’s the most important thing to you about your next role?’ “Whereas most people would have said a couple of years ago it is all about money, now the focus is how they are made to feel, it is about being part of a team, being valued, being recognised. “I think companies are recognising that and they are working harder to maintain their staff to ensure they keep the skills and the talent.” Work With Your Recruitment Consultants “Many companies see recruitment consultancies as a CV-sifting service. We always work to add value, work alongside other businesses, and we will always be honest with them.” says Jason Gault. Rob Bruce adds: “A lot of clients think ‘I don’t have time’ but they are in serious need for staff. If we can educate them to work with us, give us the time so we can understand the business, understand the process and let us take that pressure off them, we can speed up the process.” Jason Gault says this can mean taking a second look at candidates who might not have the ideal qualifications. “We say ‘On paper, this person doesn’t look amazing’ but there is that trust. We can often help get people into the business and they will say ‘Yes, this person is really, really good’.” Let’s Bring To A Close Times may be challenging, but forging trusted relationships between employer and consultant can make all the difference. Things are different today than the way the world once was. Hiring staff presents challenges for everyone. Hiring has been tough for years, that is why there are companies such as TeamJobs, who stand the test of time. There is no silver bullet with a solution to all the recruitment challenges, but the world does not have to be a dark place where companies have to figure out the answers by themselves. @DorsetChamber
