DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME
A
warm welcome to the May edition of Dorset Business Focus. I’d like to take this opportunity to report on a couple of developments within Dorset Chamber. Firstly, we are all absolutely delighted with our new logo, designed in partnership with our Business Partners Digital Storm. We feel the logo is truly representative of the modern, innovative 21st century Chamber we strive to be and we will be phasing this in over the next couple of months. We have also taken the opportunity to abbreviate our name and are now simply called Dorset Chamber. Over the last few months we’ve started working closely with the five other accredited Chambers in the South West (Taunton, Somerset, Devon and Plymouth and Bristol) in coming together to give our members a voice at a regional level. Under the banner of the British Chambers of Commerce South West, we’ll be lobbying and discussing the key economic issues that really affect us in the South West. We think this is a positive step forward in terms of strengthening the Chamber voice and has strong backing from the British Chambers of Commerce. We are also continuing to work closely with the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership and have
been supporting the business consultation on the development of the Local Industrial Strategy. This is an important piece of work, and business input on both our strengths and opportunities is critical – contact me for more information. April saw us renew many of our Business Partner relationships and I’d like to pass on my personal thanks to all for their support. We see our Business Partners as leaders and champions of business in Dorset and their support enables the Chamber to represent the business community on critical issues for Dorset. In April, we were also delighted to welcome the Dorset LEP as new Business Partners to underpin our strategic work together, morebus Excelsior representing transport and Crystal Clear Telecom, representing the telecommunications sector. With the exponential rate of the development of technology, it’s essential businesses in all sectors are informed and are able to embrace new technologies to remain competitive. To support our members, we are launching our new Innovation and Technology Forum, which will be a series of informal presentations and discussions highlighting different aspects of technology and their practical implementation in addition to company visits to see technology in action. This series of events is kindly sponsored by TheNonExec with the first event taking place on 6th June. Contact Vicki Hailes at the Chamber for more information.

Finally, May will see us undertake our annual membership survey. The survey is extremely important to us in helping us develop new services, understand and build on what we do well and importantly learn where we can improve. We’d ask all members to spare a few moments and complete the survey when it goes live; it really helps us improve the services we deliver for you. Wishing you all the very best for May

Wellbeing In The Workplace:
Time To Act
How do you foster a heathy workplace in which individuals can thrive, remain committed to their job, and where ‘it’s ok to not be ok’. Focus speaks to Lucy Critchley, HR Advisor at Health and wellbeing award winners Organix Brands about this pressing issue. What was it like to be the winner at the Dorset Business Awards? We were thrilled to win the Dorset Business Award for Wellbeing and to have the recognition that all of our hard work, creativity and perseverance has been seen to impact on the Organix’s team work (and home lives). Since winning the award we have had the opportunity to talk with companies that want to put together a similar initiative or just want some hints and tips to get started or improve initiatives that they have already started. We have also had the opportunity to learn from and get inspiration from other companies, as we are always working on evolving and improving our own programme year on year. Tell us why Organix has such an enlightened attitude towards wellbeing in the workplace? When we originally had the idea of building a wellbeing programme five years ago, it was easy to see how this could fit with the already well-embedded values and fantastic culture of Organix. Organix is an open-minded entrepreneurial company that has always known the value of a happy, healthy and motivated workforce, a wellbeing programme would just aim to reinforce this even more. What is your ‘wellbeing agenda’? With support from our Managers and MD, a small budget and utilising the skills of our people, we put together a plan that covered every area of wellbeing, including mental and physical health, financial advice, working environment and work/life balance. The plan runs alongside the needs of the business and our people, and we have taken into account where the pressures are, through gathering feedback from the entire Organix team. Our aim is for everything we do to be beneficial to everyone; informative, as well as challenging. Each year we start with the opportunity for us all to have Health Tests, so we can understand if there are areas of our physical health we may want to focus on; and throughout the year there will be numerous events that cover other areas of Wellbeing, which include Mental Health Awareness Training, Resilience Workshops, after work challenges, such as kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding and climbing; all one off events chosen to challenge our people and possibly start up a new hobby, lunchtime yoga, healthy recipe demonstrations and nutrition talks, a day off for an organised volunteering event, finance and pension advice and flexible working hours where people could have more flexibility to fit their working life around their home lives. How important is it to create a working space that promotes vitality? Our office is open plan, light and bright and designed to enhance our working lives. We have music playing and we are lucky enough to have a beautifully designed garden. We spend a lot of our time at work, so the space should help us to stay motivated and enlivened. 4

Organix are a team of 50 plus employees based in Bournemouth. They are proud to be the number one baby and toddler snack food brand in the UK. And for 27 years have been pioneers in the baby food industry, providing parents with nutritious ‘no junk’ organic food for their little ones and campaigning for better quality and tasty food for children. They already had a great working environment, culture and benefits, but a few years ago realised that more could be done to support their team through ever-changing work
Has your vitality programme seen any improvement in employee engagement? Our high engagement scores reflect a cumulative impact of a great culture, working environment and benefits; as well as the wellbeing programme which is designed to enhance our teams’ working lives and its impact is reflected in the positive feedback we get from the team. What impact do you think technology has had on our wellbeing at work? Working lives have greatly changed thanks to the help of technology and we actively encourage people to work from home, to work flexible hours and we encourage a working environment where people work the hours they need to, but balance that with time for a life outside of work. Do you think that attitudes towards mental health issues in the workplace are changing within our businesses? Yes, but slowly. We have invested in mental health awareness training for all of your employees, so they can understand their own mental health as well as others around them; and recently three of us have been trained as mental health first aiders to be able to support our employees at times they need it the most. Do you think that it is important to develop vitality with learning in-order to produce a thriving business? Yes, partly. None of our wellbeing programme is obligatory for people to attend, our focus is always /company/dorset-chamber/
and personal pressures. This was when they launched their Wellbeing initiative ‘Wake up to Wellbeing’. Lucy has been working at Organix for 5 years following a successful and varied HR career over the last 20 years, working for a variety of business sectors including property and finance. She was delighted to get a role within a company that is so obviously committed to improving peoples’ working lives and to be given an opportunity to make a big impact on this through a fantastic wellbeing programme.
on events and training that will give people the opportunity to increase their knowledge, health and wellbeing by experiencing and learning about new things. How important is it that our business leaders listen and take action on employee vitality? We always consult our MD and senior management team when planning for our wellbeing programme and we share the results year on year on the impact of everything we have done. From measuring sickness levels, the correlation between attendance of events to engagement levels within each team, and from direct feedback from everyone in the company. If the business leaders don’t understand the benefit of a wellbeing programme, they will not be able to cascade their enthusiasm towards the initiative to their team. The results have spoken for themselves, the feedback has been incredibly positive, with everyone realising what a great benefit the programme has been to them, sickness levels have dropped, engagement levels have risen and the majority of our fitness levels have greatly improved.
Even though we are a small team, Wake Up To Wellbeing demonstrated with a targeted thoughtful plan on a limited budget you can not only significantly impact your people’s health and wellbeing both at work and at home, but their performance and discretionary effort too.

Understanding Wellness With Poole BID Manager Justin Hundley-Appleton Before becoming manager at Poole BID many of my previous roles included an aspect of health and fitness, and it felt a natural fit to bring an event to Poole that showcases the variety of local businesses that can offer services to ensure that we are all taking care of ourselves and one another. With health and wellbeing high on everyone’s agendas at the moment, it’s important to take a moment to think about the improvements that could be made at home or at work. In a business context, looking after your employees’ wellbeing is vital to your success. Happy employees are productive, efficient ambassadors for your business, and less likely to pull a sickie. Fitness initiatives are often seen as standard across medium and large businesses, such as eye tests for those who use computers, or providing life insurance, but these benefits have become more diverse and, importantly, more accessible to small businesses. Wellbeing can be anything from making and providing healthy food choices, such as a fruit bowl over a biscuit selection, to social aspects and ensuring your team can bond – and if this happens to be over a beer and pizza in the office on a Friday afternoon it’s not a bad thing, it just needs to be managed with healthy alternatives. On 1st June, we will be hosting a wellness event on Poole high street, with a range of businesses exhibiting, including Lush, Everyone Active, MDG Sports, Slimming World and Nuffield Health. Visit Poole town centre between 10am and 4pm to find out more.

Small Businesses Don’t See UK Tax System As Level Playing Field Businessess believe that the UK tax system is fundamentally unfair and want more support to stay compliant, according to new research released by the British Chambers of Commerce.
O
ur survey of over 1,000 firms from across the UK, found that nearly three-fifths (58%) of respondents think that the UK tax regime is unfair to businesses like theirs. The findings largely signal concerns over how HMRC applies the tax rules to different types of firms. Two-thirds (67%) of respondents don’t believe that HMRC applies tax rules fairly across all sizes of business. Micro firms are more likely to have that view (70%) compared to their medium and large counterparts (59%). 64% of companies disagree that HMRC applies tax rules fairly regardless of where the company is domiciled. Again, there is a difference in perception among small and larger firms (67% micro firms v 59% medium and large). The results also found concerns over the quality of service provided by HMRC. One in two (49%) firms don’t believe HMRC provides the support they need to be compliant. This figure is higher for micro firms (51%), compared to medium and larger firms (42%). Many respondents expressed frustration that HMRC underestimated the time and money their small businesses spent trying to keep pace with regulatory burdens and the complexities of the system. Reflecting a strong impression of unfairness in the UK tax system, the leading business group is calling on the government to improve HMRC’s service to business, by matching the level of investment in tax avoidance work with funding for support and advice to businesses. Reducing the burden of compliance and improving processes for collecting tax would also go a long way to improving the process for business. The relentless rise in upfront business taxes and costs, from sky-high business
rates, to the costly introduction of Making Tax Digital and changes to auto-enrolment, is adding to the already onerous cost and administrative burden on firms and is reinforcing the concerns over the current tax regime. The BCC also reiterates its call for the government to pledge to introduce no new input taxes and other significant costs on businesses for the remainder of this parliament. Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “These results reflect a strong impression among businesses that the current UK tax regime isn’t a level playing field. “When it comes to compliance there is a tendency for HMRC to see smaller businesses as low hanging fruit and as a consequence they feel under the constant threat of being called out for getting things wrong in a tax system that has grown ever more complex. In contrast, action to tackle persistent compliance issues among a small minority of firms remains frustratingly slow. “There is also widespread disappointment over the escalating burden of up-front taxes and costs of doing business in the UK, particularly at this time of heightened uncertainty. This has proved to be tipping point for many smaller firms who typically operate on a tight cashflow. “HMRC must step up efforts to provide better support to smaller businesses to get their tax right, rather than simply pursuing and enforcing penalties. This should include matching investment in frontline HMRC help towards SMEs, with their work on noncompliance and tax evasion. More also needs to be done to address the escalating burden of upfront costs and taxes to provide firms with much-needed headroom to get on and invest, train their staff, and compete on the global stage.” 5

Dorset Businesses Have Their Say On Local Industrial Strategy Companies and organisations across Dorset have begun having their say on a wide-ranging consultation on the county’s economic future.
T
hree business breakfasts hosted by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) are the latest stage in plans to shape growth and prosperity through a Local Industrial Strategy. Representatives of sectors including manufacturing, tourism, finance, the creative industries and education attended the events, held in Bournemouth, Shaftesbury and Dorchester. The strategy is intended to help maximise long-term economic opportunities and create jobs while addressing barriers to growth. Speaking at the Bournemouth event, LEP Director Lorna Carver said: “We are in a competitive environment with LEPs around the country bidding for government funding so we need to articulate a distinct vision for Dorset. “What do we want to be known for?” “Our consultation is designed to ensure that the content of the Local Industrial Strategy reflects what businesses across the county want and need.” As well as presentations, the events featured panel debates involving LEP Board members taking questions from the floor. Jim Stewart, LEP Chair, said: “We’re asking businesses and partner organisations to tell us what they think about the challenges and opportunities we face, how best to attract and retain talented people and how to make access to investment easier. “The more we can identify what is unique to Dorset, the more we can influence the level of government funding that comes our way. “We could be a ‘California of the UK’, a place with a fantastic natural environment and the power to attract companies to relocate here from the rest of the UK and internationally.” The events discussed various challenges for Dorset around productivity, infrastructure, house price affordability, climate change, talent retention, social mobility and the ageing population, many of

which were identified in a recent LEP survey. Points from the audience included the importance of consultation with students and younger people, the idea of branding Dorset as ‘well-being’ capital, and the need for more attractive town centres, and thinking like a city region. LEP Board member Ian Girling, Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged more businesses to get involved as the consultation continues. /company/dorset-chamber/
Ian said: “With Dorset’s two new local authorities replacing the nine councils we had before, we have a fantastic opportunity to sharpen the county’s decision-making, bid for more funding, and create a more unified message and brand. Businesses need to be at the heart of these discussions.” More consultation events and opportunities for engagement are to follow ahead of a strategy launch in autumn 2019.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PRESIDENTS COLUMN
The President’s Column by Liz Willingham
I believe this is a positive step forward where a stronger – and hopefully unified – voice can be raising key issues to parliament that affect the businesses in our region
I recently had the opportunity to attend a meeting hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) of all the accredited Chambers of Commerce in the South West to discuss some of the key issues for businesses across the region.
A
new ‘South West & Wales Regional Assembly’ has been established for all chamber representatives in our patch, namely Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Bristol and South Wales, to work together to feed shared ideas and issues up to the BCC. There will be similar clusters of other counties in the South East and throughout the UK. I believe this is a positive step forward where a stronger – and hopefully unified – voice can be raising key issues to parliament that affect the businesses in our region. The good news for Dorset is that I will be chairing this new forum and therefore we will have a rare opportunity to shout louder about our needs. Dorset can often be invisible as a county economically, associated with beautiful landscape and sleepy lifestyles and not perceived to be in the thick of cut and thrust business. Any of you reading this will know that life is actually pretty productive here, businesses do exceptionally well despite the usual challenges, and our attraction as an economic centre is strong with huge potential yet untapped. It was interesting to hear that other sessions the BCC had hosted elsewhere raised different more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
issues to our own in the South West; however, the uniform themes where the Chamber network needs to campaign continue to surround infrastructure, people and international trade. I had the privilege to meet Chamber CEOs and Presidents from the other counties and I believe it will give Dorset Chamber a wider perspective and some opportunities, such as building ways to attract talent from London and other areas. We can’t change some things such as road networks, but we can certainly influence others, and we will be. On the subject of attracting talent, the Dorset Chamber board is pleased to welcome Nicky Busst to our fantastic Board. Many of you will know Nicky as she is a regular attendee of chamber events. She is Senior Corporate Relationship Manager for HSBC Commercial Banking and has extensive experience in working with senior management to support business growth and is skilled in international business and business development. Nicky brings yet another complementary area of expertise to the Chamber’s board and I am looking forward to working with her. We are now well into 2019 and, as always, the world of business is evolving, one example of a changing sector being the media. We will see our
own Daily Echo editor, Andy Martin, moving on from his role this year. Andy has lived and breathed the paper for what feels like a lifetime and Southamptonbased editor, Gordon, takes up the chair of both papers. It’s important in all of our businesses to stay agile and progressive and keep one eye on the future. The media is a good example of significant change and at Liz Lean PR we have been close to these changes for many years, navigating our own processes to ensure our clients continue to gain the awareness they deserve. Our insider knowledge informs us that newspapers are closing at the same rate each month as pubs. Both entities are necessary for community engagement and human interaction; they are key components of our social framework. Our newspapers also provide accountability for those in governance and positions of authority. We should be grateful that in Dorset we still have great daily newspapers amidst a wealth of other weekly and monthly online, offline and broadcast media outlets. And also – thank goodness – some of the best pubs! We must support and value these treasures but we must also be creative in our way of thinking. When one door closes, what new, exciting and vibrant additions can fill the gaps to ensure as communities we still engage with each other? How can we do things differently? Hold that thought until the next time; something to ponder on your midday mile perhaps?

Sleep Your Way To Better Productivity, Mental And Physical Health Getting a good night’s sleep, in the right kind of sleep environment, promotes a daily recovery state for our bodies and minds. Did you realise that we are able to live five times as long without food as we are without sleep?
S
leep reduction decreases the efficiency of our brains to manage neurotoxic waste. As studies continue we are seeing a strong association between brain toxicity and diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntingdon’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia. Research has also shown consistent links between sleep deprivation and health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and a reduction in the effectiveness of our immune system. During sleep, hormones are released to carry out important restorative functions such as muscle growth, tissue repair and protein
synthesis. As a result, consistently gaining a full night’s sleep can improve recovery after exercise and, reduce rehabilitation time after injury. There is also data to suggest that physical performance can improve too, with studies demonstrating significant improvements in strength, power and even co-ordination, all important factors in reducing mistakes and boosting productivity! In contrast the accumulation of fatigue has been found to increase recovery times and susceptibility to injury, whilst impairing judgment, decision-making skills and reaction speeds all with potential to decrease productivity.
Just as caffeine and nicotine are stimulants some foods are more sedative in nature, you could try: •
Vitamin B6-rich fish such as halibut, tuna and salmon help with the production of melatonin ( a sleep inducing hormone triggered by darkness) as do bananas, chickpeas and fortified cereals.
•
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that when healthy sleepers who ate a carbohydrate-rich supper of veggies over jasmine rice fall asleep significantly faster than if the meal contained lower glycaemic index (GI) long grain rice. The theory being that the higher GI content of jasmine rice stimulated a higher production of insulin which increased the production of sleep-inducing tryptophans.
•
Also a calcium deficiency may interfere with the ability to fall asleep so eat plenty of green leafy vegetables such as kale.
In the UK, we spend roughly a third of our lives in bed. So making sure that we create the right environment for sleep is hugely important. • • • • •
Ditch the screens, or at least apply a blue light filter (there are many apps available) at least an hour before bed. Ditch the notifications. Block any intrusions from your devices from 9pm. Ditch the caffeine. Did you know the caffeine from a cup of coffee drunk at 12 mid day is still in your system at 10pm! Keep your room as dark and as cool as possible, between 18-22 C Decrease noise or use a white noise generator such as a fan.
Sleep hygiene is an Americanism but basically means establishing a routine with consistent bed times, as staying up late and sleeping in at weekends can disrupt sleep patterns in the week. Aim for a relaxed routine before bed, visualise having a good night’s sleep but do not try to force yourself to sleep as research proves this actually raise stress hormones that prevent sleep! Try to set aside 30 minutes to write down any worries or tasks to return to in the morning, learn progressive relaxation or meditation techniques and give your body and brain a chance to slow down and prepare for sleep. 10

AFC Bournemouth are looking back to the 2008/09 season with the Minus 17 documentary, but there were plenty of external businesses who helped the club during its darkest hour. The Minus 17 premiere took place at the Odeon cinema on Wednesday 24th April, and the three headline sponsors were all part of the memorable quest to avoid the drop out of the Football League and potentially into extinction. Hill Osborne, BH Calibration and Instant Refrigeration Services all helped the club when it needed it most and continue to be involved today.
The trio of businesses sponsored the event which saw Minus 17 air for the first time to the public, with players such as Steve Fletcher, Mark Molesley, Darren Anderton and Danny Hollands accompanying Eddie Howe at the cinema to watch with the rest of the squad, supporters and sponsors.
Following the exclusive premiere event at Bournemouth Odeon in April, the documentary is now available for all to watch for FREE on afcbTV.

These are important areas but must be aligned with a thorough understanding of the family dynamic, the emotional make-up of a family business – what makes it tick, what keeps it together, what keeps it successful, what intergenerational differences exist in terms of motivation and aspiration, where it is heading in the future and what will success look like? Every family business is unique and each requires different solutions to the challenges they face that are tailored for their individual needs. Our new 360

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / YOUNG CHAMBER
Dorset Business Engineering In Spring 2019, Young Chamber was invited to attend an event at which Bournemouth and Poole College’s engineering degree apprenticeship was presented as part of a wider approach to addressing the local talent shortage for engineering companies in Dorset.
B
ournemouth and Poole College, through its existing post 16 and post 18 engineering apprenticeship options, is working with Bournemouth University (programme sponsor of Young Chamber) to offer the engineering degree apprenticeship for students who wish to train locally at a higher level. The engineering degree apprenticeship runs alongside the existing well-respected HNC, FdEng, BEng, BSc, MEng and MSc courses across a variety of engineering disciplines. Dr Philip Sewell, Head of Department – Design & Engineering at Bournemouth University, writes: What can we do to address the shortage of engineers in Dorset? In June 2015 the government announced the term “apprenticeship” will be protected in law, gave ‘degree apprenticeships’ equal treatment to degrees and committed to creating 3 million apprenticeships (at intermediate level 2, advanced level 3, higher levels 4-6 and degree levels 6&7) by 2020. Therefore it is imperative that higher education institutions are working alongside schools and industry to ensure they fully utilise the apprenticeship levy to deliver high-quality higher and degree apprenticeships. Recent research by the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has identified three growing sectors that are important to Dorset’s economy and have the potential to drive high productivity growth for Dorset, one of these being advanced engineering (Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, 2018). A benefit of apprenticeships is to address the regional skills gap in engineering and loss of knowledge in regional companies as a result of employee turnover or retirement through supported succession 14
May 2019 | Dorset Business Focus
planning. Identified skills gaps and shortages across the Dorset area include significant weaknesses in engineering skills. The demand for skills to replace those who are leaving the workforce is much greater than the demand for skills generated by projected growth in the economy (Department for Education, 2017). The percentage of engineering graduates in the region needs to be increased to address the skills and output gaps identified. This cannot be achieved from full-time degree programmes alone. Currently 35% of Bournemouth University (BU) engineering graduates from our full-time programmes who are in professional employment, work in the local area (South-West) while a large percentage will go into industry all over the world. BU’s Department of Design and Engineering in collaboration with Bournemouth and Poole College (BPC) are tackling this local engineering skill shortage head on through the development of an engineering degree apprenticeship which launched in September 2018. The integrated programme was developed in collaboration with local industry and all students studying at all levels of the programme come from the local region and are employed in the local engineering sector. The degree apprenticeship provides a seamless pathway for part-time engineering education for local companies and for an employee starting with a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Foundation Degree in Engineering (FdEng) at BPC in day release mode and further progressing to the BEng (Hons) Engineering degree at BU in flexible learning mode. The programme has manufacturing, mechanical, marine and electronic pathways. There are currently /company/dorset-chamber/
approximately 50 degree apprentices across the levels and this number is expected to grow rapidly. We are noticing that degree apprenticeships, as an alternative route to full time degree programmes, are being supported by local schools who are actively promoting apprenticeship opportunities at their careers fairs. A consequence of this is that we are now finding more potential university applicants enquiring about degree apprenticeship opportunities at our open days. Interest from Industry in degree apprenticeships is also high. Ten apprenticeship levy events have been held in the local region since January 2017, attracting 350 participants from over 160 organisations. In summary, degree apprenticeships are key to the growth of the skills of the local economy. There is a noticeable change in attitude towards apprenticeships by schools, industry, parents and students. There are a large number of engineering apprenticeships becoming available.

Enhanced Celebrates 25 Years Of Helping Businesses Grow In 1994, three ambitious young businessmen formed a computer company by the name of Enhanced Computer Solutions. Their aim was to offer premium, cost-effective service from an enviable portfolio of skill and experience.
S
imon White and Mark Pollock took on the roles of technical, and support manager respectively. Now, 25 years later following a management buyout in 2007, Simon is CEO supported by Mark and fellow directors in one of the most successful and fastestgrowing technology companies in the South of England. The company has overseen a great deal of change over this time. They now have a turnover in excess of £5 million and completed a rebranding – as Enhanced – in 2008. Simon however, insists the fundamental aspects and company beliefs haven’t changed. “Our mission and ideals are the same as they were 25 years ago, to constantly excel in everything we do,” he says. Enhanced are recognised for their expertise in working with companies who also believe that IT is at the core of their business growth. They make it their business to make sure the IT technology and services their clients need integrates effortlessly into their existing business. “We continue to invest in our products, service and people,” says Simon. “As National award winners for our customer service and support we are determined to continue our promise of 25 years ago, to be exceptional in everything we do. “To achieve this we have to ensure we continue to offer the best possible professional services from a team dedicated to its people.” This is what Carolyn Collins, Director of Domiciliary Care at Care South has to say about Enhanced. “We have worked with Enhanced for nearly 10 years and have total trust in a company who fully understand the sensitivity of our business. Working with them is like having your own in-house IT team. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to others.”
Enhanced have ambitious plans for the next stage of their growth. They are investing heavily in the infrastructure division of their company. This includes growing their engineering, pre-sales and sales team, offering business forums for existing and new business customers, and constantly looking to be one step ahead in the market place - a market place which is constantly changing and offering new innovative solutions. Their people have always been of paramount importance to Enhanced and as well as working on improving the customer experience they are investing heavily in the personal development of their people, deploying staff engagement programmes and encouraging ongoing feedback and consultations. Paul Warwick, Solutions Support Manager at Enhanced has worked with the company for over 20 years. “Enhanced is a great company to work for, with everyone working together to achieve the same goals. It has been amazing to see the company grow from strength to strength. They believe in their people and as a team we support each other with one aim, to support our customers.
“Over the years we have learnt many lessons and embraced the ongoing fast and furious changes in our industry. The role of an IT consultant has changed dramatically and we believe that any successful company should now view their IT consultant as part their strategic team, as they would their accountant, solicitor and business advisor. It is our job to keep our clients up to date with changes, innovations and latest thinking. We are passionate about growth and are focused on helping our clients achieve theirs.” “Thank you to all those involved who have made the last 25 years such an exciting challenge. Our promise to you is to keep challenging ourselves, keep learning and above all, embrace all that the future brings. We will continue to deliver IT you can count on.” Simon White, CEO, Enhanced.

Field International Open Plant In Singapore Aerospace manufacturing companies, Field International, are pleased to announce the opening of their Singapore manufacturing plant, which was officially opened on 15th February 2019. To celebrate the opening, a reception was held at the Hotel Atrium, whereby Singapore representatives from the British Chamber in Singapore attended, including the Deputy Director for International Trade, Justinian Habner. Field International’s MD, Mark Booker, spoke, describing the opening as a momentous achievement for the company which his father, David Booker, founded in 1995. Following the reception, guests were transported to the new plant at the Singapore Industrial Zone for an official opening ceremony, which included a traditional lion dance for good luck and fortune, followed by a tour of the plant and demonstrations. The event took place during the week of the Chinese New Year, bringing an atmosphere of positivity for the year ahead. With their head office in the UK, this new plant will provide Field International with a manufacturing and repair-based service that can supply South East Asia and beyond, giving the company an even stronger foothold in their worldwide expansion, and yet another opportunity outside of China. Field International took over the plant in 2018 when it was a distressed business, successfully re-energising the company and retaining its highly skilled staff. They plan to recruit a further 10 employees, including a general manager, which will no doubt have an ongoing positive impact on the area’s employment. Field International MD, Mark Booker, said; “The opening of our Singapore plant is a significant step forward for Field International, and the ceremony really did the occasion justice. Having such a large presence in the area will enhance our 22

relationship with South East Asia considerably, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how we can grow from here.” Field International has an impressive presence on the global stage; this forward-thinking company boasts engineering and manufacturing facilities in the UK, Singapore, the US, China and Spain, and trades in over 50 countries around the world. With their sights firmly set on continuing their worldwide expansion, Field International supports and supplies most of the major airlines and MROs worldwide with licensed aircraft tooling and ground support equipment. They’re even able to lay claim to being one of the UK’s only official Airbus Tier 1 Aircraft Tooling suppliers and one of the top-selling Boeing tooling licensees. This latest expansion is testament to their ongoing success and growth, and, with plans to expand their reach even further, this UK aerospace manufacturing company is truly a global player. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
How Businesses Are Saving 40% On Their Admin O ver the past 2 years, there has been a huge rise in Virtual Assistants and their popularity, with many businesses recognising the need for them, says Gemma Wall, The Contemporary PA, Dorset. Offering a vast set of skills, virtual assistants can cater to your needs in ways office-based administrative assistants can’t. VAs can do regular office-related tasks like email management and data input, as well as the more digital-related tasks like social media management and online presence. Not all Virtual Assistants have the same skill-set but they still offer a lot of services you can’t get with office-based administrators. With the diverse skill-sets available, the likelihood is there will be a Virtual Assistant out there for every type of company across many sectors. But, there are still some businesses that are hesitant to hire one, considering them to bring a risk as they work remotely, and it can be difficult to monitor their work. However, there is a reason why Virtual Assistants get more and more popular every year. For a lot of people,
the benefits of hiring them far outweigh the risks, and a VA is relatively more affordable to hire compared to an office-based worker. Many businesses are looking at ways to cut down on office expenditure, and with the growth of co-working spaces, business owners have less space for full-time employees and are turning to collaborations with other freelancers to complete business tasks. Many start-ups find that Virtual Assistants are relatively cheaper, not only because of the physical advantages of not having to provide desk space and equipment, but as many work ad-hoc and are flexible with their working times, you pay for what you use. Experts have calculated that VAs can achieve around a 40% saving. Another possible key to their popularity is due to technological advancements. Virtual services, technological and digital advances are key innovations for the success of small businesses, but development is at such a pace that although in some ways it assists business operations, business owners are getting busier and are seeing an
increase in things they have to do meaning effective time management is more difficult for them. Virtual Assistant skills and experience are far beyond that of a normal assistant, and they have proven to be able to handle jobs quickly and effectively, with many offering the digital skills many businesses are missing. Business owners are reporting an increase in productivity and business owners have said that hiring a Virtual Assistant helps to avoid the possibility of burning out. Owners of start-ups in particular usually try to do everything they possibly can by themselves to save on costs. But no matter how good you are at what you do, you’ll never be able to do everything well and of course there will be times when you need a break. The demand for Virtual Assistants is set to rise even higher, and their skill sets will also widen accordingly. Writing skills, video editing, and content production is emerging, with some predicting that these will become standard skills. For more information please visit www.thecontemporarypa.co.uk
REIDsteel Revs Up For Jaguar Land Rover Showroom A Dorset steel construction company, working with Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, is to start on site for a new £12.3million Jaguar Land Rover dealership in Bristol. John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has provided design and manufacture expertise for steelwork, cladding and decking on the new Guy Salmon showroom at Cribbs Causeway. The Christchurch-based company is due to arrive on site in mid-April 2019 to start on its phase of construction on the state-of-the-art project. Extending over 72,000 sq ft, the dealership will include showrooms, a 280-space roof deck car park, as well as workshops, servicing bays and office space over two floors. REIDsteel has designed, built and will erect approximately 620 tonnes of structural steelwork and 10,600 sq m of decking – all meeting JLR’s Dual Arch Concept requirements for its showrooms. Jordan Laker, REIDsteel bid manager, said: “It is exciting to be involved in such a prestigious project in one of the UK’s prime retail locations.
“It is the second JLR dealership we have worked on in recent months, and our largest in the automotive sector so far. “Guy Salmon is part of the Sytner Group Ltd, a national dealership for prestigious cars and one of the largest automotive retailers in Europe.” “We are looking forward to starting on site and playing our part in creating one of the most impressive dealerships of its kind anywhere in the country.” Work was started by building contractors on the development just after Christmas 2018 and it is expected that the dealership will open in spring 2020. Redundancy Support In Demand Ringwood-based human resources consultancy View HR, has witnessed a growing demand from businesses in Southern England for their expertise in the highly sensitive process of making staff redundancies. Gemma Murphy, who launched View HR 4 years ago, believes that businesses are now more aware of the costs; both in financial and reputation of mishandling the legal process, whether it’s individual, or mass redundancies. “We are first to admit that it’s one of the most stressful roles that we can be asked to oversee on behalf of our clients - as these are people who have families, bills, mortgages and when faced with redundancy, this can make for a very bleak outlook. Whether it’s 1, 3, or 100 people facing redundancy, it motivates us is to do it properly, fairly and to give employees the dignity they deserve for their service to the business,” said Gemma Murphy. View HR recently undertook a large-scale collective redundancy consultation process (over 60 employees impacted) in London for in the professional services sector. Gemma admits that the feedback that resulted from those impacted by the restructure, was more gratifying than the fee. “We knew that we had consulted with staff correctly when we received a few hugs and thanks for treating them all fairly and with dignity. I also received an email saying “I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your professionalism and fairness during such a difficult period”, that’s nice and that helps me sleep at night. Ultimately, if a business needs to make redundancies, it is going to happen, but that doesn’t stop it being done fairly and professionally.” Organisations should be aware of the financial consequences when management fails to follow the correct legal procedures, especially when there are more than 20 employees at risk of redundancy. Businesses regularly come unstuck where they don’t follow a consultation process. Businesses, no matter what the size or turnover, cannot just make people redundant. There is a fear that in weak industry sectors, businesses will be making redundancies to survive, but where they have not followed a process, they could face major dismissal claims which in turn cripple the business they were trying to save. Stranded Seahorses Found On Dorset Beaches Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has been made aware of an unusual amount of stranded seahorses being washed up on Dorset beaches within a couple of weeks of one another, thanks to members of the public posting their finds on social media. The first report came from Studland on 29th March, when Rene Smith picked up a small, dried spiny seahorse on the beach. This was followed by others at Worbarrow Bay, near Kimmeridge, Greenhill Beach in Weymouth and Chesil Beach at Portland. The finds include examples of both spiny and shortsnouted seahorses, our two native species. DWT’s Marine Awareness Officer, Julie Hatcher said, “To have so many seahorses washing up in Dorset in such a short time is unheard of and we are very grateful to the people who found them for publicising their finds. While there is no obvious reason for the deaths, it certainly indicates that Dorset has a good population of seahorses along the coast. All the seahorses were small individuals, born last year, that would have matured as adults this summer. Seahorses inhabit a number of different types of seabed, including shallow-water seagrass meadows close inshore. Julie added, “It may be that they struggled to find enough food early in the year or were caught out by some rough sea conditions and accidentally washed up on the beach. We are keen to hear
of other records that might give us a clue as to the cause.” Several sites in Dorset are known to have seahorses, including Studland Bay where both species have been found to breed. Both Studland Bay and Worbarrow Bay are currently being considered as possible Marine Conservation Zones, a type of wildlife reserve, which will enable those areas to be managed for the benefit of seahorses and the variety of other marine life that live there. The decision on whether these sites will be designated is expected in the next few weeks.

1,000,000th Sales Order Line Despatched From Tower
Last month, Tower Supplies despatched it's 1,000,000th sales order line from its Holton Heath distribution centre that opened in January 2016. The order, made by SSE via the online approved catalogue that Tower provide them with, was for Tower's own-brand, high risk PPE (personal protective equipment) - FireBear. Tower's Director of Sales, Bruce Woodfield, said "1-million products despatched from our distribution centre that's a leading facility in the health, safety and hygiene market is a fantastic achievement to be proud of." Mark Dowling, Tower's Director of Marketing, added: "We were pleased to involve all stakeholders by running competitions to guess the date of this milestone. Crowd Creates Bournemouth Beach Lodges Website Bournemouth Tourism has partnered with independent global creative agency Crowd to deliver a new website for Bournemouth Beach Lodges. The site promotes beachside accommodation on the south coast of England, in the style of the traditional British beach huts, but with modern conveniences for the tourists. The project followed the existing brand guidelines and used photography supplied by the client. The brand-new website highlights the benefits of staying in the luxury beach lodge accommodation with attractive images of the interior and the surrounding areas. A dedicated page was created to display the nearby attractions such as Corfe Castle, the New Forest and various water-sport activities. The visuals reflect what awaits visitors on their beach lodge break and position Bournemouth as a great holiday destination. The colour scheme invokes feelings of a coastal sunrise and the typography is reminiscent of the heyday of

the British Seaside in the 1930s, but with a contemporary feel. Subtle animations were used on calls to action that represent the sea rushing up the beach to provide a visual reward for those about to click. Graham Dell, Projects Director at Crowd, says: “Creating an excellent mobile experience was always key to maximising bookings and search engine rankings. With a reliance on large inspirational images, we needed to ensure that the mobile site was fast and easy to use, whilst retaining the focus on photography which was essential to generating excitement in the visitor.” The website was developed on WordPress as it allows the client to edit the content of the site. Crowd built a bespoke content editor that provides an easy means to edit existing pages and create new landing pages for paid or social marketing. It provides a good balance between inspirational photography and essential information for tourists. www.thisiscrowd.com @DorsetChamber

T
he Dorset Chamber, the county’s voice of business, welcomed the LEP as a Platinum Business Partner – its top tier of membership. They have joined forces as the LEP develops a Local Industrial Strategy to set out how Dorset can boost economic growth and achieve greater prosperity over the next 20 years, and ensure the county’s voice of business is heard. Ian Girling, who is Dorset Chamber Chief executive, said: “We’ve already built very strong links with Dorset LEP and having them on board as a Platinum Business Partner will give Dorset an even more powerful voice. “I would encourage all businesses to take part in the Local Industrial Strategy to help us improve job creation, productivity and prosperity while addressing the challenges Dorset faces especially around infrastructure and skills.” The LEP is seeking the views of all Dorset businesses, industry leaders and groups that represent industry sectors.

It has already held consultation events, with more due to be held before the strategy launch in autumn 2019. Dorset LEP Director Lorna Carver said: “The business community’s influence is pivotal to the growth and prosperity of Dorset and so it is an entirely natural move for us to work even more closely together. “It’s an especially important time for partnership working as we take forward consultations on our Local Industrial Strategy which will help to shape our shared economic future.” The LEP is drafting a local strategy to link with the Government’s National Industrial Strategy for a co-ordinated approach to create a more productive, innovative, inclusive and sustainable economy. Businesses will be able to find out more about Dorset’s Local Industrial Strategy and how to get involved at its annual business conference in May. Dorset LEP Chairman Jim Stewart said: “Dorset Chamber is at the very heart of the county’s business community and plays a crucial leadership role for its members. /company/dorset-chamber/

Lush Switches Up Their Social Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you may well have heard the news that Dorset-based brand Lush has recently made the decision to 'switch up social' and, well, switch off altogether as they close down some of their main social media networks. There has been recent press coverage of the effects of social media on mental health (especially in the young) - and this may yet prove to be yet another clever stunt by the brand to highlight mental health and how social media can negatively effect it. However, assuming it's not... I'd like to make a guess that you may well have first come across this story via social media, which brings me to my main point, which is that essentially, Lush's new social media strategy is indeed more of a PR stunt than a brave move (and yes, we're all talking about them...) but one that long term, may not pay off. By effectively abandoning the audiences they've built up over time (a sizeable 569,000 followers on Instagram, 423,143 on Facebook (complete with chatbot) and 202,000 on Twitter) their loyal brand advocates are naturally likely to feel quite disillusioned. Lush are saying they are all about community, then effectively abandoning the very community they already have online, who are pretty likely to be their most loyal fans. They have said they will be keeping individual store accounts and are encouraging the use of #LushCommunity, but again, from a company that has always nurtured such a strong, central, and creative brand message, it's a strange move to step away from this opportunity to drive this message forwards. Social is exactly that - social! Yes, I'm absolutely writing this piece as the founder of a social media
agency, and yes, beating the ever-changing alogorithms can be certainly hard (that's one of the main reasons agencies like ours exist) but while Lush are completely correct in their rationale that social media alogorithms are constantly evolving, we believe that smart brands should evolve with them and create new ways of reaching their audiences rather than moving offline altogether and requesting consumers call them up or send an email instead circa 2001 (when was the last time you called a brand? Especially to complain about your bath bomb not being the right type of flakey?) This feels more like controlling a community, rather than allowing it to grow and flourish. What would we have done differently? Well, if they were absolutely certain that social media wasn't working for them, we'd start by looking at why. They've certainly had some dubious press such as last year’s #SpyCops campaign, which sought to highlight the undercover police officers who infiltrated environmental groups and started relationships with the female activists. This without doubt had a negative effect on their social media, resulting in trolling across all their channels. Lush notoriously have a policy against paid advertising, but Facebook is essentially an advertising network - this is not a bad thing for large brands (with large audiences) such as Lush, given the unique targeting opportunities available, but for
smaller businesses with limited budget, it can be hard to stand out. We'd suggest that to be brave, a smarter long-term move would have been to hedge their bets and focus on one, stand-out social media network and this should have been Instagram. Beauty brands receive the most user engagement on Instagram and Facebook, second only to fashion (Socialbakers study, 2018). 60% of users discover products on Instagram, and 75% of users take action (like visiting a website) after looking at a brand’s post. It offers the opportunity to continue to build their largest community, interact with influencers, shop direct from the network, create stories, showcase campaigns and melty bath bomb videos galore, plus offer their individual 'store takeovers' and similar initiatives - but with a centralised, Lush-recognisable, voice. And owning your brand voice online, we think, is always the smartest move. Clare Groombridge is the Founder at South Coast Social www.southcoastsocial.com

Driven
- Hyundai i30N Steve Bulley
- Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic.
I have been embracing my inner boy racer. The new Hyundai i30N is a nod to the days when performance cars had hard suspension and a short stick manual gearbox. I can honestly say it reminded me of my old Subaru Impreza.
F
irstly, let’s get the colour sorted, used in the TV, online and press ads the pastel, ‘Performance blue’ I think suits the car. Other more traditional colours are available of course ... This is also the ‘fastback’ which looks more like a coupe but with a big boot and useful hatchback. Many people I spoke to said it had the look of a Mercedes from the rear. I certainly think the profile has the look of a premium European brand. Enough of the looks, you will have your own thoughts. Let’s talk driving the i30N fastback. It is a fast car, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds with 271bhp and a top speed of 155mph all to the front wheels, proper old school. It feels rapid from the standard bucket seats and with a short gearstick, changes are easy. It also sounds amazing. None of this artificial noise, there are real flaps in the exhaust pipes to ensure the car sounds every bit as fast as it looks. You can customise your settings for bangs and pops galore, which adds to driving enjoyment and makes the car sound great. Being a five door, it’s practical and can seat four adults with a surprisingly useful boot space. Add heated front seats, climate control and
electronics for everything, you are assured of a fun and safe journey every time. So, what’s the catch? This is a car that you want to drive hard and although the official MPG figure is 39.8 I managed at best 28 MPG on my longer trips but town driving saw this drop to 24. Not bad figures for a performance petrol engine ... but still a consideration. The i30N is a great old school car with the fun and feel of a proper performance pocket rocket with the safety of up-to-date electronics and a five-year warranty. What’s not to like? Lewis-Manning Hospice – Continuing To Provide Care Across East Dorset As the team of dedicated professionals, care specialists, staff and volunteers at Lewis-Manning Hospice move forward together to develop and plan a new future, caring for patients with life-limiting illness and their families across east Dorset, is at the forefront for us. It is now time for us to expand our Board of Trustees and we hope that this important voluntary role will be of interest to key people in our community. Local businesses and individuals may have heard that with regret we have recently made the difficult decision to close one of our local services, our six inpatient bedded unit. Our decision to move forward in this way was not taken lightly. Following consultations with staff and talks with other local hospice care and related services, health care providers and commissioners, our Board concluded, reluctantly, that the inpatient beds were not sustainable, due to funding issues. Sadly we have recently said goodbye to a number of staff who, during their time with us, worked tirelessly to care for over 120 patients at the end of their lives. Looking to the future, we will remain focused on providing important care and support to local people across east Dorset and we plan to increase the number of people that we help through our day hospice and clinics, including better breathing, more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
lymphedema, art and wellbeing, plus practical support groups. Together we will deliver more than 5,000 sessions for people with life-limiting illness each year. As the only independent hospice in the area offering free palliative care to the people across east Dorset, we are committed to providing our community with outstanding end-of-life care and support. Our vision is that every adult in east Dorset with a life-limiting illness can choose how they receive their care. With over 25 years of experience and history supporting people in the area with a range of services run by our team of palliative care nurses and health care professionals, we hope that local people and businesses will be inspired to continue their kind support. Having volunteered as a Trustee of a UK charity for a number of years, I speak from experience when I say that one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences that I have had in my career is working with people whose values reflect my own and where my time can make a significant difference to the lives of those who need help and support. I have recently taken on the role of CEO at LewisManning Hospice and would like to invite readers to consider joining me as we move Lewis Manning forward, and ask you to consider becoming a Trustee
of our charity. We are looking for people with commercial, retail, clinical, HR and marketing skills. What does becoming a Trustee mean? In essence, if you have any of the above skills and would like to make a real difference to the lives of local people with life-limiting illness in your area, then please get in touch, so you can help me shape the future of this much loved charity. WRES Invests In Laser Cutting Technology Having invested £300,000 to add a 4,000 sq ft extension to their factory in Poole, the family owned welding and fabrication company WRES Ltd has introduced a new £750,000 fully automated 6kw Bystronic Fibre Laser. At 15 meters in length, the new laser can process sheets of metal with an automated loading system. “This increases our competitive edge and offers new efficiencies in terms of waste reduction,” said
Director Alan Hamer, who acquired WRES in 1992. “We also now enjoy lower energy costs. The new equipment can also operate through the night without supervision which gives us a greater boost to productivity and a reduction in lead times.” Working from CAD instructions from a multitude of diverse clients, from MOD, aerospace and marine and electronics industries, the new Bystronic laser has required 5 of the 50 employees at WRES to

Director Westley Hamer believes that with a foreseeable shortage of skilled workers in the welding and fabrication industry, they will have little option but to consider the investment in more automated and robotic production methods in the next decade. This will eventually demand the introduction of automated machinery and robotics, alongside skilled and semi-skilled employees to enable the £4.5m turnover company to satisfy the exacting standards required by customers that include Sunseeker International, Siemens and the RNLI. Hill Osborne: Get MTD Advice Now Hill Osborne urges business owners to get advice now as HMRC starts digitisation roll-out. Dorset based Independent Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, Hill Osborne, has urged business owners to ensure they are ready for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative which officially came into force on 1 April 2019, initially affecting businesses with a turnover above the current VAT threshold of £85,000. Under the new rules, which herald just the start of a major shake-up within HMRC, businesses must keep digital records for VAT purposes and provide their VAT return information to HMRC using MTD ‘functional compatible software’. James Hill, Director at Hill Osborne, explained “The government had planned to require businesses to keep digital records and update HMRC quarterly for income tax from 2018, but these proposals have been deferred. However, regulations have been issued which set out requirements for MTD for VAT. Therefore, generally speaking, the new rules apply to the first VAT quarter commencing on or after 1 April 2019. Due to this change in strategy, many business owners may be confused or unsure as to exactly how this affects them, or, of the deadlines 44

they need to adhere to – the first being in June for most businesses – and for this reason, we urge anyone who has questions to get in touch with us now, so as we can ensure all procedures required by your business and MTD are carried out correctly and on time, and no fines by HMRC are issued. “Under the new MTD rules, businesses will have to use a software program, or set of compatible software programs which can connect to HMRC systems via an Application Programming Interface (API) capable of keeping records in digital form as specified by the new rules; preserving digital records in digital form; creating a VAT return from the digital records held in compatible software and submitting this data to HMRC digitally; providing HMRC with VAT data on a voluntary basis, and finally, receiving, via the API platform, information from HMRC to ascertain compliance. “Whatever the size of your business, there is a time of great change ahead, and Hill Osborne is on hand to help and advise with all the challenges business owners face as HMRC starts it digitalisation process.” To get advice on how HMRC’s MTD will affect your business, call 01202 678555

5 Ways That Retail Digital Signage Can Boost Sales Never has it been more important to battle for shoppers’ attention in retail spaces. Consumers are spending more money online, so how do you get customer engagement back in stores? Says Wimborne-based Quad Vision Ltd.
D
igital display is reversing the decline of instore sales, in fact it’s creating a significant boost. Retailers are experiencing the benefits, take the new Primark Store opening in Birmingham for example; a vast array of digital signage used here from shop window attention grabbers and wayfinding solutions to product showcases and information points. 1. Brand reinforcement By using digital display from screens to interactive modules around a store, retailers can quickly advertise their products and emphasise the promotions they are trying to push. One of the main benefits of this is the ability to show specific products to customers, regardless of where they are situated in the shop, or perhaps even from the outside looking in. However, the ability of retail digital display to engage, is much deeper than showing off a product or service. The most successful retailers are boosting sales through brand-centred digital signage campaigns. Using content to encourage customer loyalty to a brand, rather than a specific product, has a much greater pay off in the long-run. Video has had a significant impact within social media as a strong marketing tool and it makes sense to boost your brand using digital display. Marketing spend to boost your brand awareness goes much further when you add in-store digital display to you other inbound marketing channels and provides a richer return on investment.
Recommendations and public feedback, through reviews and such like, are powerful methods of exposing your brand. Building brand advocacy through customers who can share images instantly from your store with digital display will spread awareness of your brand for you. It may be difficult to specifically track each interaction but there will be a positive impact on spreading your brand to new audiences. 2. Power to the people Consumers have more power than ever before due to the explosion of social media and the internet. Right now, consumers have the ability to research, compare and refer anything before making a purchasing decision to get the best value. The reality is that many shoppers have abandoned the shopping centre or high street altogether; the convenience of online shopping along with a simple digital purchasing process has advanced this. Digital display provides a significant effort to re-engage with customers and improve the customer experience. With interactive touchscreen technology, retailers are beginning to win back shoppers by linking the online and instore experience. Allowing customers to flick through products and services by using digital display instore can be incredibly effective. Retailers are now able to personalise each and every interaction without interference from staff in the store. This makes the shopping experience more relaxed and provides the consumer with the time and information to make considered purchases because they stay longer.
3. Enhancing the customer experience Digital display for retail not only transforms customer experience, it provides a way for retailers to influence decision-making by customers, from showcasing particular products, best-selling items for example, to recommending on a live feedback basis by social sharing. The principle is of course the same as having printed banners in your shop window or stand-alone displays up in aisles. The key difference, however, is the space-saving benefit of digital display. The ability to quickly alter products and promotions on display is another huge benefit as time and cost is massively reduced. Smaller retailers have the ability to compete with larger brand names by attracting shoppers in with digital display. Taking up a fraction of the area compared to traditional promotions materials, digital display takes up a small amount of space. Promotion through digital display from your shop window provides a huge space to advertise your business. Digital display also influences the customer experience by directing footfall around a store. An interactive map provides shoppers with real time information of the store’s layout and guides shoppers to what they are looking for quicker. Add some sensors then your digital display system can begin to measure and manipulate footfall. 4.Promoting special offers Need to boost your sales? Traditionally retailers offer special promotions on products and advertise these deals in store on printed materials (leaflets, posters). Digital displays are an excellent tool for this, as digital advertisements can be a lot more engaging than paper alternatives, through video. Taking things to a new level are interactive retail display screens. Developments in the technology can now allow customers to enter the product identity code (SKU code) of an item and receive its information and availability on screen. With QR codes, retailers can capture consumers attention online and then to scan their screens to unlock special offers which are only available in store. Becoming more creative and using technology needs to be simple. When reviewing your strategy, it’s important to think about rewarding customers for loyalty and especially to consider more favourable promotions in store to boost regular footfall. 5. You can’t manage what you can’t measure Big data, small data, it can come with negative connotations and make your shoulders sink at the thought of having to wade through spreadsheets but having a set of analytics based on actual customer experience will help boost your business. Digital display analytics can join up with your online data to better understand your shopper. Filling out a paperbased questionnaire is so 1990s. Capturing – consented of course – data about your customers has never been easier with a pointand-click-using technology. Developments in digital display technology now mean that screens are able to track with a greater understanding of who’s walking past and who’s stopping to engage with their content. Every mobile phone nowadays has Bluetooth or NFC (Near Field Communication). This provides retailers the ability to personalise messaging and promotions, and adds to an enhanced in-store experience. For those who want even more detail, eye-tracking and facialrecognition technology is available to allow you to get very scientific indeed. Using digital display and targeted marketing is surely the future of advertising. Want to find out more? Our specific case studies will help you learn more about our digital display for retail. DigitalComplianceHub Prepare For No Deal Brexit As the Brexit turmoil continues in the UK with the UK government still to agree on an appropriate way forward, EEA businesses are gearing up for a no-deal Brexit. When that comes to data protection, Brexit, particularly a no-deal Brexit, could have implications for your businesses if you’re processing EU citizen’s data. This is because it is unlawful to transfer data outside the EU unless appropriate safeguards are in place; these safeguards are usually: • •
•
An EU adequacy decision (as in the recent case with Japan) An EU agreement with the country that binds businesses in that country to EU standards of data protection (e.g. the EU-US Privacy Shield agreement) The use of legally binding contracts, by using “model clauses” dictated by the EU in their regulations
In the event of a no-deal Brexit there will be no adequacy agreement in place, nor will there be any agreement which just leaves the contractual route. The use of standard data protection clauses (or model clauses as they’re sometimes referred) requires one of the EU’s Standard Contractual Clauses put in place as an agreement between both parties. With more and more businesses across the EU (not just the UK) preparing for a no-deal Brexit we’re beginning to see some UK companies being asked to sign model clauses in anticipation of a no-deal Brexit. Without these contracts in place, basically EU to UK data flows would have to stop.
But if this isn’t practical then provided the contracts you’re being asked to sign are literally the EU’s model clauses then in theory signing them is binding your organisation to EU data protection standards which of course, whilst we’re still in the EU (even if the withdrawal agreement is signed and we enter the transition period), you are bound to anyway. But this is only going to be the case if the contract is simply the model clauses – if your client has added something extra or done something different then you may need to be careful what you’re signing. What to look out for Check that these really are the EU’s Standard Contractual Clauses you’re being asked to sign and that you’re not being asked to sign something different or indeed you don’t need to, because your client has misunderstood the rules. The Digital Compliance Hub has produced some guidance information about Brexit, EU to UK data flows and what to do about being asked to sign model clause contracts, but we’ve also launched for members a model clause review service – a simple sanity check that you really are signing the right thing. Plus, of course Hub members get access to phone and email support should they have any specific Brexit, model clause or other data protection issues. Get on board yourself – it’s like having your own Data Protection Manager but without the cost of hiring a DPO.
Greendale Construction welcomes new team members to its Poole headquarters as the company continues impressive growth Dorset Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has welcomed four new employees to its Poole-based headquarters, in-line with the company’s impressive continued growth. Ian Whithorn has joined the team as Estimator/ Contracts Manager in the Small Works Division which undertakes projects from £1,000 to £400,000 within a 100-mile radius of its Poole office. With over 30 years continual employment within the construction industry, including experience on a diverse range of building projects, design and build and listed building works, Ian will be a key member of the division which continues to expand and is a major contributor to the company’s overall turnover. Richard Tite has taken on the role of BID Manager and will be responsible for writing Greendale’s BID submissions, implementing PQQ submissions, as well as working closely alongside the BD Director on the business development and marketing side of the company. Originally from Poole, Richard has recently relocated back to the county to take up this role with Greendale. Tyler Cooper has joined Greendale as an apprentice Site Carpenter. Having previously been part of a St Aldhelms School group on a site visit to The Priory Hotel, Wareham, Tyler then went on to complete two weeks work experience with Greendale in 2017, before applying for an apprenticeship this year. Tyler is predominantly working within the Small Works Division and is being mentored by Rob Leonard. Alex Capewell has also joined the Small Works Division team in the role of Multi-Skilled Tradesperson. Alex has joined the Company from BCHA where he had previously worked with our Small Works Division Manager, Shelley Davies. Having worked within the construction industry for most of his life, Alex brings with him a wealth of experience and will be using his skills to work on various Small Works projects including at Bournemouth Airport and St Phillips Church. Maria Seabright, Finance and HR Director at Greendale Construction, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Ian, Richard, Tyler and Alex to the Greendale team. In Tyler’s case, it’s particularly encouraging that a school trip to one of our sites can motivate a young person to go on to choose an apprenticeship with Greendale, learning a highly valuable and skilled trade which will arm him with the foundations of a career for life. Greendale has always understood that our staff are our greatest asset, and investing in them not only benefits the company, but also the local area itself.”
The question is, should you sign them? Well this depends. Arguably, it’s still uncertain whether we’re leaving the EU on 22nd May 2019 or some other time, not at all, with a deal or with no deal, so you could say that you should only need to worry about them once it’s clear that a no-deal is imminent (and definite), so you would be within your rights to not sign them just yet. 46

Mark Gracey, Owner of Digital Compliance Hub: “No-deal Brexit could have implications for your businesses if you’re processing EU citizen’s data. We're Excited About Home Cinema! Poole-based Living Home Tech, have seen their Home Cinema install business increase year on year. Thanks to new Technology now available for the Residential market, such as Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced and 4K, it really is now achievable to have a cinematic experience at home, which out performs a commercial cinema. On this particular Home Cinema project, our remit was to provide the client with a high-end solution after spending years of 'DIY' solutions and growing frustrated with the performance and operation of their room, not only frustrating, but also wasting a lot of money along the way. This project was a challenge due to the room shape and a retrofit installation in the client’s basement. Straight away we made the decision that we needed to turn the room 180 degrees to improve the layout and allow us to use a larger screen with more speaker channels. This room has 11.1.2 Dolby Atmos, that’s a total of 13 speakers and one subwoofer! It uses the very stylish Artcoustic on wall speakers, with careful placement, which is based on science not guess work. Our design and careful speaker placement are based on producing 105dB at the centre seat - the ‘sweet spot’, which was very difficult with a room already built. We had various obstacles such as the bar, external entry door and windows, along with the tight projector throw to achieve the desired image size.
The 120" 2:35 ratio 4K Neo Screen Excellence widescreen hides the front three speakers and subwoofer. We supplied detailed designs for the arranged contractor to carry out the building works required for the front stud work and decoration works. The 4K image is provided by a Sony 4K projector, using their latest native 4k resolution, this is paired with their flagship 4K UHD Blu-ray player. We then added 5 bespoke cinema seats for the client to enjoy their new cinema in comfort, but also offering convenience with the cup holders and foot rests. We designed new lighting layouts and specified some LED colour-change ceiling coffer detail to create different moods when desired. The client is a Man United fan (don't hold that against him!). He can light the room in red colours while watching the big match. For lighting control with pre-set scenes, we used the Clipsal C-Bus system, with their stylish eDLT switch with bespoke digital labelling, giving the client a user-friendly experience. Blind controls have now also been added. We advised we should first fix a blind control point. The
client was pleased we did as the interior designer planned for an electric black-out blind. This has been added to the ‘watch Cinema’ scene. At the touch of a button the room dims, blind closes, projector turns on and the room is ready to be Cinematic. Simple control from a single Control4 handheld remote, givies the client a very user-friendly interface. Living Home Tech are pleased to have been nominated for a ‘Smart Building Award’ in the ‘Best Home Cinema over £50,000’ category for this project. Living Home Tech are nearing completion of their HQ showroom refurbishment, offering a demonstration of a Dolby Atmos, 4K Home Cinema set up. A very exciting room to welcome clients, architects and designers. Our Top Tip: When booking to go and see a movie at a commercial cinema, try and book your seats as close to the centre of the room as possible. This is where cinema designers calculate performance levels from. It’s the best seat! For more information, www.livinghometech.co.uk
FTS Fatbusters Bournemouth-based specialist recruitment agency, FTS Construction Recruitment, are taking part in an exciting fundraiser to help conquer the sedentary work environment while also raising money for Poole based Lewis-Manning Hospice. What is the Lewis-Manning Hospice? Lewis-Manning Hospice is Poole’s voluntary hospice offering free specialist palliative nursing care to the people of Poole, Bournemouth and the surrounding towns and villages living with cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses. Why Lewis-Manning Hospice? FTS’s Recruitment and Marketing Consultant, Morgan Scott, attended the ‘Seeing is Believing Soiree’ evening late last year; this gave Morgan an opportunity to meet staff and gain first-hand insight into what goes on at the hospice. After seeing a Bournemouth Echo article released back in March stating that in-patient beds at the Hospice are set to close due to funding issues, FTS wanted to help raise money to contribute to this cause. Why Fatbust? FTS are a recruitment agency, which, like other office-based jobs, includes a lot of sitting in front of more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
a computer for a majority of the working day. As we all know, this can be detrimental to health - the NHS website states that: “To reduce our risk of ill health from inactivity, we are advised to exercise regularly – at least 150 minutes a week – and reduce sitting time. Studies have linked excessive sitting with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death.” As a number of the consultants here joined local gyms to take action on the sedentary lifestyle, we thought we would cement the movement by setting targets and raise money for a great cause too. Who is taking part? There are currently 5 Fatbusters: Managing Director Jared Lee, Recruitment Consultants Jordyn Johnston and Lawrence Mursell, Office Administrator Francesca Hammond and Recruitment and Marketing Consultant Morgan Scott, who have set the following targets to hit before
the end of June 2019, with monthly weigh-ins to monitor performance. •
To reach a collective weight of 66.5 Stone from a collective weight of 70 Stone
•
To reach a body fat percentage of 116% from a collective percentage of 138%

Spotting The Warning Signs There have been some very high profile business failures over the last 12 months, particularly in retail and hospitality, and all the signs are that the number will increase over the coming months. Yet businesses rarely fail overnight. In most businesses the signs are there to be seen long before it goes into liquidation. It starts with underperformance, with turnover and profits stagnating and then declining. That leads to cash flow difficulties, taking longer to pay suppliers and the quality of its service or product starts to slide. Management seems to be spending more and more time firefighting. Before long payments start bouncing, threatening letters, writs and summonses start arriving, and the directors are always struggling to find cash – perhaps not paying themselves. Finally, bailiffs may turn up at the door, the bank won’t even pay the wages, a winding-up petition arrives and it’s time to bring down the curtain. But so often directors and managers bury their heads in the sand, hoping that “something will turn up” to solve all their problems. If action is taken early enough, before a difficulty becomes a crisis, the business can be turned around and saved.
Ask yourself some important questions •
Do you understand the financial side of the business?
•
Is it making a profit?
•
Do you know how much revenue you need to break even?
•
Do you have enough cash to see you through the next three or six months, or to survive any unexpected setbacks?
•
Are you under pressure from your suppliers, receiving harassing calls and letters and having to choose which creditors to pay and which to leave?
•
How up to date are you with your HMRC returns, and are there any arrears of PAYE, VAT or corporation tax? HMRC rarely take prisoners and changes announced in the Chancellor’s last budget may well mean that they’ll be even quicker to take action in the future
•
Is your bank overdraft constantly up against the limit? Used properly, an overdraft is supposed to iron out fluctuations in cash flow, and so you’d expect to see the account alternate between being in credit and being overdrawn.
Graham Down, the Managing Director, of tri group, who specialise in helping financially distressed businesses, said: “Financial difficulties can creep up on the unaware, and the problems can escalate rapidly if they’re not addressed. The earlier that the problems are identified, the more options that are available and greater the prospects of securing the future of the business”. 48

Blast From The Past: Volvo Cars Poole Hosts Classic Car Event For Local Charity A car retailer in Poole recently hosted a classic car event to raise money for charity.
L
ast month, Volvo Cars Poole on Ringwood Road hosted a special ‘Throwback Thursday’ classic car event, raising over £500 for Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, a charity that helps local people and families affected by cancer. The event featured a range of classic cars for the guests to view, including a Volvo 360 GLT from 1983 and a Volvo 740 TURBO Intercooler Estate from 1989. To add to the nostalgia, team members took a step back in time by dressing up in 80s outfits for the occasion.
Dorset Cancer Care Foundation provided support to team member Michelle McCourt last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Michelle is now an ambassador and was on hand to raise awareness of the charity at the event. Michelle, who works as a Host at Volvo Cars Poole, said: “Dorset Cancer Care Foundation means so much to me. It was fantastic to put on a special event to raise awareness of the charity. “Lots of people came to see the retro Volvos and take a trip down memory lane. We’d like to thank everyone who attended and made the day such a
success.” James Litton, General Manager and Director, added: “Here at Volvo Cars Poole we are so proud of Michelle becoming an ambassador for such an important charity. “Everyone enjoyed looking at the wide range of classic cars on display and we are delighted to have raised such valuable awareness of the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.” To donate money to Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, please visit: justgiving.com/fundraising/ volvocarspoole-dccf For further information about Volvo Cars Poole call 01202 065555 or www.volvocarspoole.com

Volunteering Forum Encourages Opportunity Wellbeing At Work Supports Employee Health And Wellbeing
SOME of Dorset’s best-known employers have been coming together with smaller businesses to share ways of improving staff wellbeing.
Not satisfied with just providing mental health and employee wellbeing training, Ouch Training Team are now actively seeking to encourage and facilitate opportunities for employee wellbeing. After running our recent health and wellbeing event at Blandford Brewery we spotted an opportunity to encourage a spot of community volunteering. On a recent Mental Health first aid course one of our clients Composite Profiles expressed a desire to improve employee wellbeing through the shared experience of community project volunteering. On the same course were members of Dorset Wildlife Trust. One organisation was looking for volunteers whilst another was looking for a community project in need of help. Ouch facilitated this connection by liaising between the two organisations and documenting their shared experiences through video. Getting your team to work together for a good cause is a great way to improve employee wellbeing and that is exactly what happened on 28 March 2019 at Lorton Meadows in Weymouth. Well done to Composite Profiles and Dorset Wildlife Trust, a fantastic example of what can be done when the people of Dorset work together. Sam Dallimore from Dorset Wildlife Trust told us: “Conservation days are a great way for members of staff to engage with each other in a completely different setting and are extremely beneficial for their mental health and wellbeing. Just spending a few hours outside, immersed in nature has been proven by countless studies to increase participants’ sense of wellbeing and regular exposure to wild spaces has been proven to improve participants’ mental health. So it’s well worth investing a bit of time for your team and helping conservation charities manage essential habitats for wildlife.” Joel Nurser from Composite Profiles told us; “The DWT day was great fun and gave us the opportunity to relax and help a local charity. I’m looking forward to visiting over the coming years to see how our hedgerows are getting on. The opportunity to spend the day working on a community project gave me a real sense of achievement and something that I will look back on with pride.” Dorset Wildlife Trust have lots of opportunities for businesses to volunteer, so why not contact them to find out more?

The Workplace Health Forum meets quarterly to share best practice, learn from experts and look at how to implement or improve current workplace health strategies. Organisations taking part have included Merlin Entertainments, Hall and Woodhouse, the RNLI, Crumbs and the NHS. The forum was started by Renee Clarke, who runs Work Well Hub, a Poole-based health and wellbeing consultancy. She said 26 per cent of employers have a workplace health strategy, but 94 per cent of those do not use it. “Creating a healthy workplace culture isn’t rocket science. With a little structure and vision, all organisations, no matter what size, can create a great working environment in which people thrive not just survive,” she said. “Workplace health isn’t just a ‘nice to have’. A healthy workforce equals a healthy business with improved performance and improved retention and I want to help share my knowledge to
create a region of healthy, thriving businesses.” Renee ran similar events successfully in the Midlands before moving to Dorset. “Because it’s free, we ask the attendees to host it on a rota basis,” she said. “I’m trying to use the forum as a platform to educate people on how to start thinking about workplace health and wellbeing and what changes they can make,” she added. “There are small businesses where the HR Manager is running around handling lots of issues and hasn’t got time to do this but wants to do it.” Chloe Stevens from Merlin Entertainments – the Poolebased operator of theme parks around the world – said: “Since 2017, the Dorset Wellbeing Forum has provided a fantastic opportunity for like-minded people to share best practice in the world of Wellbeing. It enables a sense of community where all members recognise that every
accomplishment, no matter how small, should be celebrated. I would advise any business professional in Dorset to check it out.” Julie Painter, of Poole-based charity Ansbury Guidance, said: “ I am part time and on top of HR, I oversee training and health and safety. Time was therefore not available to undertake a full wellbeing project. “I found it dispiriting that at every forum meeting I would introduce myself and state that we had still not made any progress. However, coming to the forum each quarter, I have heard how others have taken wellbeing forward in their organisations, and I hear about tried and tested approaches and new ideas. Two colleagues and I attended the forum before Christmas and we were inspired and decided to become the ‘wellbeing’ group to share the load. Find out more at www.workwellhub.com
Laceys Solicitors Advise On Acquisition Of Land At Winfrith Site, Dorset Roger Clayson, Solicitor at Laceys Solicitors LLP in Bournemouth, has advised Inutec Limited in its acquisition of the freehold interest of land at the Winfrith nuclear site near Wool. Part of the land was originally the subject of a lease to Inutec granted by the operators of the site, Magnox Limited. The freehold was previously owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). There were a number of complexities associated with the deal and it was necessary to involve (and where necessary seek approval of) the government, the regulators for nuclear sites and radioactive waste (the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency respectively) and local stakeholders. Among other matters, Inutec has taken on responsibility for the decommissioning of the site from the NDA. It has also had to obtain its own nuclear site licence – the first licence to a new operator granted by ONR for 15 years. Inutec is a subsidiary of the Tradebe Group, one of the largest waste management companies
in Europe, who are based in Barcelona. Inutec deals with the processing of radioactive waste from many nuclear sites around the UK, including those owned by the Ministry of Defence, the NDA and EDF. Roger is a Commercial Property Solicitor with specialist knowledge of the nuclear sector. He was formerly Head of Real Estate and Head of Legal at NDA. In this particular matter, as well as the property aspects, Roger advised on environmental issues, the Crichel Down rules, the revocation of NDA’s designating directions applying to the land
and the conditions attached to the new nuclear site licence. Roger said: “I was first instructed on this matter in October 2013 after initially advising Tradebe on some of the aspects of its acquisition of Inutec that year. It took a long time to agree the heads of terms but once that was accomplished we moved reasonably quickly to completion. I would like to thank the team at Inutec and the other parties involved for their continued cooperation”. www.laceyssolicitors.co.uk or 01202 205019.
