DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME

A warm welcome to the November edition of Dorset Business Focus. So the Brexit chaos continues. Boris didn’t get his deal over the line and we face yet another extension to leaving the EU of potentially up to three months. Regardless of events in Parliament, businesses will still need to assess the implications of Brexit for their business and take the required actions. To support this, Dorset Chamber has ramped up it’s support for businesses across Dorset. The Dorset Chamber website includes a Brexit section which includes a number of sector specific factsheets. Whilst originally written for a ‘no deal’ (and this may still be the case as I write this), these factsheets will also be a very helpful guide for businesses whatever the outcome. Sectors covered include manufacturing, financial services, care, farming, food and drink, retail and tourism and hospitality. You’ll also find other useful guides here as well as well as being able to register for a dedicated Brexit e-newsletter. I am also very pleased to announce our Dorset Chamber Brexit Helpdesk Service which will be open to all businesses in Dorset and free to use. The service will be run by a dedicated Brexit Advisor, thanks to funding from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and Dorset Councils, and can help Dorset businesses find the advice and guidance they need to understand and adapt to the requirements of Brexit. October saw us bring our members in the community and voluntary sector together for a network meeting. As

well as receiving a useful update on GDPR, we talked about the value of strong relationships between the 3rd sector and the business community in working together to try and address issues such as homelessness. At a time when public services still face ongoing financial pressures, the 3rd sector plays an increasingly important role in the delivery of services and our focus is to support the sustainability of these organisations. Our charities network meets quarterly and if you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch. Our thanks to our network sponsors Lester Aldridge. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has sponsored the Dorset Chamber team taking part in the YMCA’s Big Sleep Easy. A team of us will be sleeping out in the cold in cardboard boxes to raise funds for services that support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It’s clearly a huge problem in society that needs to be addressed and if you would like to donate, you can do this via the Dorset Chamber page on the Virgin Moneygiving website. Including gift aid, we’ve raised £730 to date and it would be incredible to make the £1,000 mark. Earlier this year we launched Dorset Chamber Life Skills, to raise funds to provide employability and life skills for young people in care and care leavers. The business community was incredibly generous and £4,000 was raised on the night we announced the fund. The first

wave of activity is underway and this funding is being used to recruit and train 20 business mentors for these young people. It’s a structured programme with full training given to mentors. The time commitment isn’t huge and if you’d like to get involved and help support these young people, please get in touch. I’d like to thank everybody that attended our Signature Dinner in October, sponsored by Inspire, and say a particularly big thank you to our guest speaker, Poole-based professional yachtswoman Pip Hare. Next year Pip will compete in one of the most gruelling sporting events on earth, the Vendee Globe, and will attempt to single-handedly sail around the world in around 90 days, seeking to break the existing world record set by Dame Ellen Macarthur in 2001. Pip gave a truly inspirational insight in to both the physical and mental challenges in competing in an event as challenging as this. As a Dorset-based athlete, Pip has our total backing and if you would like to see how you could support Pip, visit www.piphareoceanracing.com I’d also like to thank our Business Partners who renewed their relationship with us in October, specifically Bournemouth & Poole College, Hendy Group, Global, Bournemouth Airport, Digital Storm, Sunseeker International, HSBC, ITSB, A-One Insurance Group, Purple HR and ESET. We’d also like to welcome new Business Partners Image Republic. Your support is greatly

appreciated and we look forward to continuing to work with you. I’m very also very pleased to announce that our President, Liz Willingham, has been elected to join the Board of the British Chambers of Commerce. This is excellent news and strengthens our voice at a national level. I’d like to congratulate Liz on her success and also offer our thanks for her incredible support as the President of Dorset Chamber. Finally, the Dorset Business Awards are fast approaching on the 28th November. Always a glittering event, tickets are selling quickly so please do book your place for this great night – and the very best of luck to our finalists on the night!

I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and best wishes. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Dorset all set for the 25th Dorset Business Awards This year’s Dorset Business Awards (DBA) celebrates 25 years of celebrating business, making this year’s event on the 28th November the most special in its history. We speak to Stuart Dixon from Dorset Chamber about what’s in store for this year’s special night. How have the awards changed since 1994? The DBA’s were launched at a special event held at the Atrium at Bournemouth University back in 1994 with the intention of bringing together three separate business competitions and end ‘awards fatigue’. It was felt at the time that there were too many award events being held at the same time. It launched with three categories: The KPMG Company of the Year, Lester Aldridge Business Person of the Year and the Institute of Directors/ Echo Marketing Challenge. The event has been held at the Royal Bath Hotel, The Pavilion Theatre, Poole Lighthouse and the Bournemouth International Centre where this year’s awards will be taking place once again. The DBA’s are much larger and much more inclusive and prestigious than they were in the very beginning. In 2018 we had 700 guests, over 200 entries, 13 categories, 39 finalists and was the largest awards to date. The Dorset Chamber took over the organisation of the awards in 2006 which has enabled it to grow and reach businesses from further afield. The event evolves every year with small but impactful changes to the point where it is a very different event than it was 13 years ago. We rebranded the awards in 2017 with plenty of colour and to celebrate the diversity and entrepreneurial spirit of Dorset businesses. What does it take to produce an award ceremony this prestigious? Without the support of all our sponsors we wouldn’t be able to produce an event of this scale that’s for sure. All of them believe in the event and what it does for the county, in terms of celebrating our businesses, the stories and the people behind 4

them. It also serves as a beacon for the rest of the UK that we are an entrepreneurial and innovative location for business. It’s a 12-month project that starts with talking to sponsors about what we hope to achieve. Throughout the year we are busy promoting the event and encouraging businesses from all over Dorset to enter. The event itself takes a lot of planning from table plans and running orders to the gala dinner and production. We work closely with all our suppliers who go above and beyond to deliver a night that Dorset deserves. On the night Brighter Productions and BH Live Hospitality take the event to a whole new level and ensure the evening goes on without a hitch. As organisers they have our deepest gratitude. What is the most challenging part in organising the DBAs? There are many moving parts to organising the event and one small decision or great idea has impact across the project. Sometimes we can press on and sometimes we must put the idea on ice but the key to success is taking feedback each year and changing those elements that need to be changed. What kinds of businesses entered this year? Every year we see all different types of businesses entering from all over the county. The awards resonate with people from varied sectors of all different sizes. Our categories help us to attract such a diverse range of businesses and this is probably one of the greatest things about the awards. There is no other business event on the south coast that brings so many people together from so many different business backgrounds. It’s a very emotional night, I’ll never forget the /company/dorset-chamber/

tears of the winners backstage at my first awards in 2016. In these moments you realise that the night is about real people and the journey’s they have been on. The entire programme has been carefully crafted to serve Dorset. The categories are very strategic in that they are designed to generate awareness of key business-related concerns such as the environment, employee wellbeing and exporting. They are also designed to showcase the ‘best in show’ so other businesses can learn from the success of others. These stories continue well beyond the evening as they are published, posted and shared throughout the following year. What does the Dorset Chamber team do on the night? We are a mixture of chaperones and troubleshooters throughout the evening and all have a designated role to fulfil. We work alongside Brighter Productions and BH Live Hospitality from 9am right through until 11:30pm. We have a break and enjoy the amazing 3-course meal with the other guests

but after that we get to action to ensure the evening runs as smoothly as possible. The whole team are incredible in helping me to get this event realised, my colleagues Hayley Moore and Vicki Hailes have been instrumental throughout and have given me incredible support.

So, who is hosting the awards this year? We welcome back the Wave 105 breakfast team, led by Rick Jackson for the third year. The team are a joy to work with and they deliver a professional and entertaining ceremony. The feedback we have received from guests over the last 2 years has been 100% positive so there is no reason to look for anyone else. In previous years the awards have been hosted by comedians, business correspondents and news readers but Rick, Kate and Michael help us to lighten the evening enough without going too far into any dangerous territory that some comedians could take us {laughs}. Wave 105 have always been great supporters of the DBAs and to have them involved on a deeper level is great for all concerned. What’s on the menu? All guests get a locally sourced, first class menu designed by the chefs at BH Live Hospitality. During months of planning, a lot of creativity and deep consideration they have come up with a menu that all 700 guests can enjoy and this year’s desert has a wonderful nod to 1994. Selecting the menu more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

is very difficult but the options are always inspired. We are in conversation with all guests about their dietary requirements. Who’s opening the ceremony? We always try and have a surprise that delights all guests on the night. The last two years we have had dancers to liven up the Winsor Hall prior to opening the ceremony but this year being the 25th anniversary of the awards means we can do something different. We are very excited, and we would like to thank the entertainment sponsors Custom World for making it possible. What can guests expect when they arrive? We are pleased to welcome back local singer songwriter Phil J King, who will entertain our guests on arrival. As guests make their way to the Solent Hall they will receive a very warm welcome at the drinks reception from the Dorset Chamber team, all sponsors and the BH Live team. The drinks reception is sponsored by local entrepreneur Matt England at Sun Rum. Sun Rum will be providing a special arrival drink for all guests to enjoy as they network and settle in to the Solent Hall. What are you most looking forward to? Seeing 12 months of work come together and the emotions of all the winners are by far the best part of the event. The Dorset Chamber have been relentless in the pursuit of delivering a fantastic event all year and we can’t wait to host Dorset’s finest.

What would you say to anyone who hasn’t got a ticket yet? Get one immediately! {laughs} The event isn’t just about the finalists and winners or even the sponsors. It’s about being a part of the business community and making meaningful connections. Your ticket buys you a fun and inspiring evening, a delicious threecourse meal, world class production, live entertainment and the warmest of welcomes – right here in Dorset. It’s the perfect night to bring your team or prospective clients to. It’s the 25th awards so it’s going to be a very special night for all of us.

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham

In the last edition I touched on the merits of buying local and how important it is that we do our bit to support local retailers and suppliers. It’s also becoming clear that the heightened pressure of climate change is forcing us all to think and act differently, and many believe that businesses that do not address their carbon footprint will frankly disappear.

T

he miles which food travels can be a shocking statistic when you dig deeper and I do wonder how much effort we are making to champion the fantastic wealth of local producers we have on our doorstep? We are so fortunate to live in a county with a rich landscape perfectly placed to produce everything we need. In light of that I was disturbed to hear from a friend who runs his business in London’s Borough Market but lives in Dorset that most of the meat, fish and vegetables he buys in the market in London comes from here! He is often bringing it back on the train at the weekends as he is unaware of any such market existing in the Poole and Bournemouth area. It’s great that our produce is spreading to a wider environment and reaching a broader audience, putting Dorset on the map and giving it the recognition it deserves. But access to it for ourselves, in one community-focused space, without the food traveling miles seems to be missing? I am hopeful however that the sea of change is forcing us to be motivated by different ways of thinking and working. And perhaps these opportunities are becoming more highlighted with our reconfigured local authorities now getting their feet firmly under the table. Visionaries are what we need. Brave, bold and intelligent people who are prepared to blaze a trail, stick their necks out and give our local politicians and council officers the confidence and strength to make decisions which set us up for the future, and accountability to make those decisions a reality. In my many years of working in this wonderful area, I have seen individuals who could be perceived as visionaries, who are bold enough to highlight a need, create something exciting, making change often for the benefit of many others not just for themselves and they are rarely given the profile or credit they deserve. I was invited to the launch of Bourne Space overlooking Bournemouth Gardens recently. A development of dated hotel space reinvented as serviced offices, meeting and co-working space, a funky business hub with community at its heart. A social enterprise, Bourne Awesome, has been established alongside, offering fitness activities and a vision to help with local issues such as increasing homelessness. Entrepreneurs like its founder, Richard Davies, demonstrate where the private sector can work collaboratively with our local authorities to build a better place for 8

November 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

the future, and to support the longstanding success of our Dorset towns. With ventures alongside landmark schemes such as the long-awaited and much-needed Winter Gardens redevelopment, the ‘visionaries’ can get on and do what they do best, ultimately helping us all secure a bright future. I wish Richard and his team, as well as Mark Cribb and his crew at Urban Garden - which is a key part of the scheme - every success. We can all be visionary. In our own small – or big – way. It doesn’t matter if you are a leader, a business owner, or an employee creating great energy for the company you work for, a consultant working freelance across a multitude of businesses, or a student preparing for the career ahead of you, it’s about your mindset. Your ability to think beyond boundaries, taking your bold ideas and not being shy to share them. Oscar Wilde said “nothing succeeds like excess”….if more of us aim high for the good of our amazing county, only more good things can happen, this potentially sets us up for many generations to come. I would like to see a culture develop here where “fortune favours the brave” is a theme which becomes a comfortable day-to-day approach. We won’t get everything right all every time – and that’s perfectly fine - but we may be watched with interest by the outside world who might just want to be a part of it and buy in. Are you in?! Send me a LinkedIn message with your views. In the meantime, get your wellies out, your coat on and immerse yourself in the onset of winter. It makes it feel better! Honest. ‘Til the next time, Liz

Who’s in your driving seat?

Photo by Matt Lamers on Unsplash

O

ne of my clients recently described the prospect of managing his own investments and pension strategy as being a bit like stepping into the driver’s seat of a high-performance sports car, having not passed his test! Throughout my 20 years as a Financial Planner, I’ve come to see that most people shy away from managing their money for one of four key reasons: • • • •

lack of understanding and knowledge, because they are too busy with ‘life’, complacency, or, more often than you may think, it’s because of fear… a fear of being told they haven’t got enough.

Most business owners and professional people have an eclectic mix of pensions, investments and insurance policies which have been accumulated over time but aren’t necessarily working for them as well as they could be. Very often there is no coordinated approach or plan for the future. 12

November 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

That’s where we can make a difference. At Blue Sky, we encourage our clients to take more control of their destiny. It sounds a tad corny to say we ‘make dreams come true’ but that is exactly what we have done on numerous occasions. We provide full service financial planning that gives piece of mind every day and helps people achieve their long-term plans, whatever their starting point. Our focus is not just on helping people retire or invest vast amounts of money. We are committed to helping our clients throughout their lives. We work together to create an emotional connection to the numbers and provide the tools needed to understand how their money can be used to help them live the life they want – now and in the future. So, my question for Dorset’s business leaders is this: who is in your driving seat? If you’ve taken the time to educate yourself and understand how to steer your finances in the right direction to achieve your goals – great stuff! I congratulate you. If, however, you feel you are amongst the majority who don’t have a co-ordinated financial plan or you know you are simply letting inertia rule, maybe it’s time to invest in some help? /company/dorset-chamber/

Young Chamber and Southern Universities Network: Raising Aspirations and Supporting Employer Encounters in Dorset The Southern Universities Network (SUN) is a collaborative partnership comprising Higher Education providers in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight including in Dorset: Bournemouth University, Arts University Bournemouth and AECC University College. The SUN provides outreach activities for schools and colleges and was previously part of the National Networks for Collaborative Outreach scheme, a two-year-Office for Students-funded project which ended in December 2016. In January 2017, the SUN embarked on the Office for Students’ (OfS) National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) and

has been tasked with increasing HE participation in over 70 wards, working with 101 schools and all further education (FE) colleges in the whole region. As directed in OfS guidance, its work is focused on young people in Years 9 – 13 and their ‘key influencers’. In summer 2019, the SUN sponsored Dorset Chamber’s Young Chamber programme with a view to engaging businesses for careers support. This will add value to the NCOP work the SUN already does through the 11-19 Team for Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole, where The SUN works closely with schools, colleges and providers across the conurbation to support

schools in their delivery of a varied and inspirational careers education for all of young people. Helen Lewis, Project Leader at Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole’s 11-19 Team, said: “Research from the Education and Employers Taskforce shows that a young person who has four or more meaningful encounters with an employer is 86% less likely to be unemployed or not in education or training and can earn up to 22% more during their career. “Dorset Chamber has a dedicated Young Chamber Coordinator whose role is to talk to the 700+ Dorset Chamber members, as well as nonmembers, to engage their support for schools across Dorset. To ensure a strong, aspirational programme, it is imperative that we are constantly speaking to and engaging the business community; Young Chamber can certainly support us with that.” The BCP Council 11-19 Team currently works with numerous local employers to help support schools in the area. To register please visit: https://tinyurl.com/CareersSupport-Register Joan Senior, Young Chamber Cooridnator said: “Working strategically with organisations such as the Southern Universities Network to raise awareness amongst businesses for the wider needs of schools, students and parents in understanding careers and raising aspirations is a testament to how far careers support has come since Young Chamber launched in Dorset in 2016. We are always both delighted and humbled by the commitment of Dorset Chamber member businesses to the development of the next generation of Dorset’s workforce. By working collaboratively with the SUN and other organisations, we are able to offer schools a far greater cohesive and robust careers support service.”

Homelessness Reduction Board launches This week will see the launch of an ambitious partnership aimed at tackling homelessness. The Homelessness Reduction Board launches today Thursday 10 October to coincide with World Homeless Day. The board will be responsible for tackling homelessness across Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole through local partners working together on an agreed vision and monitoring progress against agreed joint aims. The partnership between Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, other statutory services, the private sector and the third sector has the aim of reducing and preventing homelessness in the conurbation using a coherent and consistent plan. Including all sectors and organisations who are working to combat homelessness in the BCP Council area, will ensure a clear approach is in place. The Homelessness Reduction Board will agree the local strategic direction and vision required in order to support the prevention of homelessness and to tackle rough sleeping, particularly where issues require an integrated response. The collaborative approach will also help to ensure that in working more closely together the wide range of existing services already in place from a variety of agencies to tackle homelessness, are better utilised and coordinated to maximise the benefits. Councillor Kieron Wilson cabinet member for Housing, BCP Council said:

“I welcome the enhanced collaboration that this strategic new initiative will bring, and I look forward to working with colleagues as we outline a way towards achieving our challenging goal of reducing and eventually ending homelessness and rough sleeping.” Alistair Doxat-Purser, Chief Executive, Faithworks Wessex said: “So many people of goodwill across the BCP Council area want to play a part in helping individuals facing

hidden or street homelessness; we must be able to work more effectively by bringing together the power of each organisation whether statutory, voluntary, all the fabulous church and community activities, or all the untapped skills in the business sector. My belief is that today's launch of the Homelessness Reduction Board is more than a bit of governance: it is our chance to stand shoulder to shoulder so that "my neighbour", every one of them,

has somewhere safe to call "home" tonight. This is a red-letter day!" The board’s membership will also ensure robust links are in place to other strategies and boards including, Health & Wellbeing, Safeguarding, Corporate Parenting and the Community Safety Partnership www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk www.faithworkswessex.org.uk

PKF Francis Clark has been named as the Official Supplier of accountancy services to INEOS TEAM UK, the British team for the 36th America’s Cup. The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy in the world and the next edition takes place in Auckland in 2021. 2 tips to improve your advertising from photographer Anna Klesse After a positive feedback from my last article about visual advertising, I was asked to publish few tips on how to improve your own photography for social media and web presence. This month we will focus on composition. There are to major rules, connected with how we perceive and see things. Most important is called ‘Golden Ratio’. If you draw three identical lines vertically and three horizontally you will divide your image into four columns and four rows. First points, where each line meets creating smaller square shows strongest points (each corner of small square). These points draw most of your attention to the image. So the smartest thing to do is to compose the most important subject of your image into one of those corners, to draw your audience attention straight to the point. It can be eyes, it can be a product, service, crucial part of the machine you want to present etc. This way your image straight away becomes more noticeable and simply interesting. ‘The rule of third’ Divide your image with three identical lined horizontally. Those are the points where your horizon should be. Not in the middle. It is very rare that you have super interesting both sky and land

that you want to catch horizon in the middle (in term of landscape photography). You wouldn’t like to have your product perfectly in the middle either, unless you want to show perfect symmetry. Rule of third shows your audience much more interesting image, drawing attention and showing what you really wanted to ‘sell’ with your image. You need to remember – photography is not ‘just an image’. You are showcasing your company, showing the culture of your company, and ‘background’ of your service. You wouldn’t trust a baker with poor cake images, they don’t touch your imagination, so why should you try this cake. It needs to look desirable and unique, personalised. Your product matters, so does your work and so does the way you show it. Both rules are equally crucial for portraits, landscape, commercial photography and any other visual representation. We think when we see the images, we remember them, images are embedded in our psychology. The more we know what matters for our audience, the more we can ‘manipulate’ the way our audience perceives us through the images we show them. Intalent has re-branded & Talent Seeker is here!

A

fter months of hard work (and many late nights!), we are delighted to advise all our clients and candidates of our company rebrand from Intalent to Talent Seeker. The early indications are; this will be a game changer for the business. Talent Seeker provide a range of external recruitment and headhunting services to companies and candidates who want a more personal, friendly and trusted recruitment partner. They are a great alternative option for businesses who want to steer away from the sales-driven approach of high-street recruitment agencies. Specialising in the Marketing, Property, Technology and Finance sectors, the company has also recently relocated their UK Head Quarters to Fordingbridge, as a strategic move to build on their success in Dorset. /company/dorset-chamber/

Why re-brand from Intalent to Talent Seeker? Matt Edge-Wilkins (Founder) said that whilst the Intalent brand encapsulated the 'in-house' quality of service and engagement he wanted, it didn't feel like a true representation of the company's expertise and success in headhunting passive talent using advanced online search techniques and leveraging of social media platforms. "I also wanted something that would be more memorable, scalable and have a stronger brand identity." claims Matt. To see for yourself visit www.talentseeker. co.uk or to find out more about the re-brand and business, feel free to call us on 01425 200799.

Dorset’s Rural Development Programme

Helen Stacey Celebrates 30 Years in Recruitment

Ward Goodman, Dorset’s leading independent chartered accountants, auditors and financial advisors, were delighted to be invited to speak at the recent Dorset LEADER programme at Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester. The Dorset LEADER is a unique European funding programme, where local people make decisions about what and where rural funding would make the greatest difference. Delegates listened to talks about a range of LEADER funded projects focussing on land-based sector, rural business, tourism and community. Dorset has benefitted from three successful programmes from 2000 to 2020, each delivered by community led Local Action Groups in support of rural prosperity and sustainable communities. With the future of rural funding uncertain, the theme of this year’s event was “Get ready for new beginnings and opportunities for funding in rural Dorset.” Ward Goodman’s talk was focussed on ‘rural business and public sector support’ Ward Goodman’s Managing Director, Ian Rodd said: “Ward Goodman recognises the importance of rural funding and how it can affect rural businesses. We have been working on our own research project into the most important issues facing enterprise in rural Dorset, to see where

Aspire Jobs are excited to announce that Managing Director, Helen Stacey, is celebrating 30 years in recruitment, with plans to mark the occasion with a celebratory drinks reception later this month. Helen started her career in 1988 working for Alfred Marks, before co-founding Smart Recruitment in 1999, which, with the help of her two business partners, she grew to a turnover of £12m in nine years. With five offices and 70 employees, Smart Recruitment was one of the largest and most successful recruitment agencies in the area. After the business was acquired in 2008, Helen set up her own boutique permanent recruitment agency, Aspire Jobs, in 2011, offering a bespoke personal service to candidates and clients across Dorset and Hampshire. Helen said: “This is an amazing milestone for me. It’s a tough industry, so to still be here, and successful, is something I am truly proud of. It’s fascinating to look at the jobs now that didn’t exist 30 years ago – bloggers, digital marketers, nutritionists, drone operators… the list goes on! Who knows how roles will change over the next 30 years, but I’m a firm believer that the personal and positive intervention of a recruitment consultant will continue to be an integral part of the process.” To mark her 30th year Helen will be celebrating with an exclusive drinks reception for her supporters, stand-out candidates and clients

future funding streams could be applied to make the most difference.” Ian’s presentation revealed some early findings from interviews carried out with rural business people across Dorset over the last 6 months. This included the effective use of older buildings and the difficulties around scaling up and employing people. Full results of this project will be available in the New Year and could contribute to the wider LEP strategic plan for business in Dorset. Additional speakers included: Action with Communities Rural England (ACRE), Dorset Council, Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, Dorset Tourism Association, Inspiring LEADER funded projects, National Farmers Union (South West), Northern Dorset Local Action Group, Southern Dorset Local Action Group For more information about Ward Goodman, visit www.wardgoodman. co.uk or call 01202 875900

later this month. She will also be announcing her recent appointment as Chair of Dorset Chamber Life Skills, which raises funds to provide life skills and employability support to young people in care and care leavers. As someone who’s passionate about supporting people through training and employment, the fund is very close to Helen’s heart and allows her to give back to the community. Ian Girling, CEO of Dorset Chamber of Commerce, said: “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Helen for many years and offer my congratulations on this milestone. Helen has always been an incredible contributor to the Dorset business community through her support as a Dorset Chamber Ambassador as well as her active work on local, regional and national panels. With her commitment and passion to education and her work in supporting people regarding employment, Helen is the perfect Chair for Dorset Chamber Life Skills’ For more information visit www.aspirejobs.co.uk’

n expanding Dorsetbased IT service provider, helping children to stay safe online, has signed up to support an AFC Bournemouth initiative for a fourth consecutive season. ITSB (IT Support Business) is an official partner of AFC Bournemouth’s self-funding, nonprofit Community Sports Trust and sponsors a schools’ educational project called Connect with Care. This project, whose Cherries ambassador is midfielder Andrew Surman, provides lessons in one-hour workshops designed to educate young people on how to remain safe while using the internet. ITSB chief executive Lee Dredge said: “I’m a parent myself and we want to do everything we can as an IT company to help keep children safe online and free from cyber-bullying. I had no hesitation in signing up with the club again. 20

“Connect with Care is an excellent initiative educating our young people about the dangers of the internet and, with the use of computers, smart phones and tablets in school and at home growing exponentially we must remain vigilante and aware of the dangers. Expanding ITSB was founded by Mr Dredge in 2010 and is headquartered on Richmond Hill, Bournemouth. The business operates from the south coast, along the M3 corridor and into London where it has a particularly strong presence as a technology-led, expanding managed IT services business. Earlier this year, ITSB merged with communications provider Crystal Clear Communications and already the combined technology portfolio that both companies offer is delivering a strong, unified platform and service, to support their clients’ future plans with innovative solutions.

Official recognition for pension master trust

A

workplace pension trust has become the first in Dorset and one of fewer than 30 schemes nationwide to achieve authorisation status under new regulations for workplace schemes. The Lewis Workplace Pension Trust (TLWPT) has been granted Master Trust authorisation by The Pension Regulator (TPR). Sponsored by expanding Poolebased financial advisers Lewis Investment and operating from its Poole HQ, the Trust now sits alongside the very biggest national names in the pension industry. It is a significant development for TLWPT as Master Trusts can no longer accept new employers from October 2019 without TPR authorisation. The pensions industry grew exponentially following the Government’s introduction in 2012 that workers should be auto-enrolled into workplace schemes. TPR subsequently acted to control and improve governance of master trusts through heightened regulation putting a greater onus on Trustees and from March this year, all Master Trusts had to apply for authorisation or cease trading within two years. TLWPT, which already has more than 9,500 members and advises on member assets of £26 million after

being established in 2013, is now set to benefit from its new status. TLWPT Trustee, and Lewis Investment Director, Lee van Hoyland said: “Our entire team has worked tirelessly in achieving authorisation. This accomplishment demonstrates we have achieved the required high governance standards similar to national providers. “Lewis’ is already authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and we are very familiar with the necessary regulatory requirements and this helped us to have a healthy dialogue with TPR during the lengthy application process.” “It is all about governance, implementation and stewardship – and with TPR very closely supervising all Master Trusts there can be no doubt that we will be acting in the best interests of our members and safeguarding their assets at all times.” Lee added that a major factor separating TLWPT from competitors was that it also offered independent advice to its members through faceto-face meetings via the scheme sponsor Lewis Investment. “It is our underlying belief that saving alone is not enough. We believe that every member should be given the opportunity to make informed decisions about their financial future.”

“TLWPT provides the whole package by offering a low-cost pension structure, bespoke financial advice and great past performance, with differing investment solutions to suit the individual member’s needs and risk appetite.” TLWPT, which acted ethically in not taking on new business during the application period, is now proactively set to generate growth by attracting new small and medium businesses looking to enhance their pension offering to employees into the scheme. It is also one of very few trusts able to handle pension scheme contributions for non-UK based businesses which have contracted employees working in the UK. Many other master trusts are unable to accept non-UK bank account pension contributions. Tim Lewis, MD of Lewis Investment, said: “We completely recognise that pensions are central to an employee’s long-term financial future. We are very proud to play

a part in helping our corporate clients meet their auto enrolment obligations.” Lewis Investment is a privatelyowned, independent regulated financial advisory firm founded by Tim Lewis in 1987. The firm has been providing financial advice to clients – including individuals, families, charities, institutions and international companies – for more than 32 years and assets under advice now total more than half a billion. The Pensions Regulator is a non-departmental public body which holds the position of the regulator of work-based pension schemes in the UK and whose statutory objectives are to protect members’ benefits, to reduce the risk of calls on the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) and to promote and improve understanding of the good administration of work-based pension schemes. www.lewisinvestment.co.uk

Youth Cancer Trust support more young cancer patients’ When cancer strikes, the affect on anyone can have a huge impact on one’s life, but when cancer strikes a teenager or young person the impact can be totally shattering. Youngsters have to come to terms with pain and mortality, their treatment, and the total disruption to their normal life. During the 5 years of remission which follows cancer treatment, life choices about fertility and sometimes long term disabilities have to be dealt with. Cumulatively, this can deal an enormous blow to their confidence, to their relationships and to their hopes for the future. Often, they find that the only people who can begin to understand what they are going through are those in a similar situation. The Youth Cancer Trust provides a safe and normal environment where young people with cancer can be with one another to enjoy a time of fun and relaxation. Throughout my battle with cancer and after, I felt very alone. All I wanted was to be able to interact with other people of a similar age whom I could relate to. It was then I came across the Youth Cancer Trust. This charity changed my life in a huge way. For the first time it gave me a place to get away from everyday life and actually for the first time, be able to talk about my experiences and emotions with other people who understood, who 22

Accountants keep HMRC’s Making Tax Digital free and easy

B

usinesses and the self-employed who must now provide their quarterly VAT returns via the HMRC’s new Making Tax Digital scheme are being urged to consider using the free to use HMRC recognised Magic Tax solution developed by a Ringwood based software solutions company. Annette Rees, Manager and accountant at Jenny Barnes & Co Ltd, a Hampshire based firm of Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers, has experience with the key accountancy software packages. Recognising that not all of their clients need full software packages, they will either use Magic Tax to send the required spreadsheet information to HMRC as part of their service or encourage the businesses to upload to Magic Tax themselves. “Either way, we can keep the process of providing what is essentially the same information they did prior to Making Tax Digital, within a simple easy to use process without any additional cost,” said Annette Rees. Nicki Smith, Marketing Manager at Hampshire based KFA Connect, the IT Software Solutions company who developed Magic Tax, said that this is exactly why they developed the free bridging system: “We are pleased that Annette and the team are willing to encourage the use of the website. The more businesses that use Magic Tax, the more voluntary donations we can expect to generate for Marie Curie via our JustGiving link. The total is growing all the time new people use the service.” For information visit www.magictax.co.uk

Top coaching tips from Dorset Chamber Members

2020 Vision Ever heard “Every plan falls apart at first contact”? It’s true, not much goes to plan, something always changes. But you’d never approach anything without knowing what you wanted to achieve, and how to fix it if it goes wrong. 2020 will be challenging, any caution or uncertainty we showed in 2019 will need unwinding to succeed in 2020. There will be uncertainties… there will be opportunities. 2020 is the year you will have to look at tactical plans - rather than “Why” or “Purpose” you will need to focus more on “How”. Set your sales plan now, set your business objectives now, make sure you have your “How” for each – work out what you will do if you step off plan. Live them - often. Lay out the TOP 3 WINS towards each, lay out the TOP 3 ISSUES to overcome. What’s hot, what’s not. Celebrate them, fix them. Top Tips for enjoying your life more in 2020: •

• •

Explore various ways of reducing your stress: get out in nature more, prioritise your health and friendships instead of being a slave to your job, get more sleep, reduce time spent on social media, meditate, dance, sing, start a regular gratitude practice, try a yoga laughter group, learn something new. Every month, deal with some energy sapping things you’ve been tolerating and avoiding a while, add in some fun or relaxing activities and see what a difference that soon makes. If you dread going to work on Mondays, list your transferrable skills (yes, you do have some) and begin investigating other career options. Be open to new perspectives – you’ll find that new ways of thinking can be liberating. Hire a life coach!

Change Agent top tips Why do we plan for the future by looking backwards? And aim to do more of the same old stuff? Incremental change is uninspiring and risky (all those missed opportunities), so my tip is to look forwards instead. Start with a blank sheet of paper, remember what you really want for your business and create a big, bold vision. The bigger the better! Why limit your ambitions? Give it a go; I’d love to hear how you get on. For a fresh perspective on your work and life call The Change Agent. We’ll help you find the CLARITY to figure out what you need to do, the COURAGE to take the first step and the COMMITMENT to see it through. We all work better when we’re held to account. You’re more likely to show up, pay attention and follow through when you’re being monitored. So my tip is to find an accountability partner. They don’t have to be an industry expert, just someone you trust and really don’t want to disappoint. Set some targets, create a checklist, be prepared to return the favour and enjoy the results! Give it a go; I’d love to hear how you get on. For a fresh perspective on your work and life call The Change Agent. We’ll help you find the CLARITY to figure out what you need to do, the COURAGE to take the first step and the COMMITMENT to see it through.

Top coaching tips from Dorset Chamber Members

AJG Leadership

“Leading and developing others to deliver results requires CLARITY. Clarity of direction – letting others know where you are going and the difference you want to make for your organisation or department. Being clear why this matters and making it meaningful to those you lead helps them connect with it and want to go there too. Clarity of focus – about what will determine your success and therefore which initiatives matter most at a particular time. This guides your priorities, how you spend your time and what you say no to. And when it comes to developing others, clarity of communication and feedback is vital. Being direct, honest and explicit about the progress being made but also what needs to improve and how an individual or team might do this. Start by getting clear about what you want to achieve in your leadership role and the difference you want to make….”

Business Advisory from Evolve At Evolve, we know that business advisory isn’t just about the numbers. It’s also about how you create positive change, solve problems and stay accountable. Plainly put, a business only thrives with the right mindset and through the constant development, both personally and professionally, of the individuals leading it. Evolve understands that leading a business can be difficult, so we’re here to guide and inspire you on your journey and help you overcome the challenges you meet along the way. This is what our Peer Groups, 1:1 coaching and online environment have been developed for. Through concise and engaging workbooks, plus knowledge and insights shared in an open, supportive and confidential environment, we will support you on the path to meaningful success. Your vision of success might mean you want to be wealthier; how about healthier? Do you want more time back? We believe that each of these elements is fundamental to your success, and Evolve helps you solve the conflict that so often occurs between them. At Evolve, we also know that when likeminded business leaders come together, great things happen.

Look after your People At Quay Development Coaching we believe in people. In business, people are a valuable resource. Often companies make the mistake of thinking, ‘I reward them with pay so that’s enough’. If that is you, ask yourself one Question:Do I maintain my works vehicles to ensure the efficiency and smooth running of them? After all you have bought and paid for it, why should you do more? The answer is simple, it would not run quite right, a niggling issue could cause it to fail, it could be working harder than it needs to thereby wearing parts of it out. People need that same nurturing, the same regular checks to make sure everything is ok. The time to ask, are we working as efficiently as we can be. Don’t let your people fail by not keeping them in tip top condition.

Be careful and keep reading as legislation changes you as the owner of your business are liable should things go wrong, you must keep up with the changes. Remember all employees must have a contract of employment within 8 weeks of starting, make sure you have all the correct policies and procedure in place in case you ever have an issue with an employee. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

5 Rules for a Successful HomeBased Business Samantha Acton, Founder of Domestic Angels shares her ‘not so secret’ top 5 rules for a successful home-based business. We’ve been running a home-based business since 2002. Grab a cup of your favourite beverage and digest some of the reasons why we are still here, still evolving, still disrupting the marketplace and still having tonnes of business fun. 1. Procrastination (including social media) is the thief of time and success. Yes, many of us are guilty as charged of scrolling aimlessly through FB, Twitter or some favourite social media addiction. Minutes and hours are lost to arenas designed to steal our time. One TED talk a day is more than enough, switch it off! And whilst we totally endorse putting the washing out to dry whilst you are making a well-earned cuppa, you really don’t need to watch an episode of anything on the tv too. You are human, procrastination is an established method of not getting things done which will make us successful. We all have avoidance tactics the trick is to wage war on procrastination, every time you catch yourself distracted remember it is procrastination thieving your right to be successful. Rude! 2. Just because you are a home-based business, doesn’t mean your potential is restricted. Thanks to technology, home-based businesses are only restricted by your imagination, determination and willingness to learn. We provide employment for about 50 people across our businesses with HQ based in a shed in the garden with no plans to move anytime soon. We are also a FinTech start-up, this hasn’t needed an ‘official’ office to happen either. In fact, we would argue that our business has evolved and succeeded because we are at home, not surrounded by the perceived or real limitations of other businesses or individuals. We literally give ourselves permission to let our imaginations and possibilities run wild and then make them a reality. 3. Re-connect with your buzzing ideas and energies, daily. When you started your business, we bet you were super excited, buzzing with ideas, energies and possibilities. You were a bundle of invincible energy, watch out world, this is going to be fun. Then the slog kicks in. This has at least 2 forms, the first one is in the form of tasks you need to knuckle down and do but you would rather have a tooth removed (see rule number 1 and just get the task done). The second form is created by others, usually people who want to earn money from you, people who are creating challenges/problems you never knew existed or could exist and you are just wondering how serious these creations are. Be brutal, throw out all that you can, these creations are stifling your powers of brilliance. Finally, to ensure you nail both forms of slog, daily, get your mission statement, your ‘why’ up on a wall, big and bold, read it out loud every day and be determined that everything you do only fulfils your ‘why’, not somebody else’s. 4. Surround yourself with positivity. We all know this, but how many of you actually put this into practice? By working from home you can be surrounded by the most positive power you know, yourself. But you are vulnerable to those neggy folk who still seek your attention through social media and email. We strongly recommend that you aim to break the delete button on your keyboard and take these rotters firmly out of your superbly exciting world, if they aren’t paying rent when they get into your head, evict them, now! Once again, we’d like to remind you that you are human and humans are sociable creatures, we need interaction, becoming a hermit in your home office is not good for your mental health and can put the brakes on inspiration. Whether you prefer to interact with family, friends or business peers, do it at least once a day. 5. Do something for yourself, daily. This is possibly the biggest challenge for home-based business owners because we are the kings and queens of multitasking taking full advantage of the great work/life balance we have chosen and created for ourselves. We seem to be preprogramed to be on a mission to justify our glorious choice of life and workstyle and display guilty catholic symptoms if we do something which is just for us, not for business, not for the family but for us and us alone. How bonkers is that? If our bodies and minds are not fit, healthy and happy, how can we be our best in business? Find a way every day of exercising your body and your mind, whatever floats your boat, do it and if you hear yourself saying ‘but I don’t have the time’, see rule 1, again. Relocate & Deliver New Services Lewis-Manning Hospice Care announced that they are relocating to central Poole, following the sale of their building at Crichel Mount which has been purchased by local charity and care home operator, Care South.

J

eremy Allin, Chairman of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care said “Lewis-Manning Hospice Care are sincerely grateful to Care South for granting a license to enable us to stay at Crichel Mount for up to 6 months while adjustments are made to our new home at Longfleet in order to make it fully fit for our purposes and we hope to make the move into Poole early in 2020.” The new more centralised premises located in Longfleet Road, Poole, will enable the Hospice to provide a convenient location for people at the end of their lives, within easy access of transport networks, closer to Poole Hospital with excellent parking facilities. The move is planned for early 2020, allowing for renovation to their new home in order to make it fully fit for purpose. This exciting news comes as Lewis-Manning Hospice Care plan to continue delivering their well-established day hospice and clinics in Poole, whilst expanding their services, providing new and vital support into the community, working alongside Community Hospitals, Care Homes and GP Practices. These inspiring plans for future expansion include the opening of new day hospice services, as well as better breathing clinical services one day per week in local towns across the area starting in Wareham and Swanage, then expanding across East Dorset, bringing end of life care closer to home. Clare Gallie, CEO Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, said: “This is an exciting step for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and it endorses our commitment to the local people and the community that we serve, support and care for. As we move forward, we are delighted to have been joined by five new Trustees, expanding our Board and bringing a broad range of experience and knowledge. Together we hope to open even more local hospice servicesand work within communities further afield to help more people at the end of their lives, closer to their homes. Clare continues: “The move follows the difficult decision in April 2019 to close our 6 bed inpatient unit (which cost us £1.2 million per year to operate) due to funding sustainability in an area where other local hospices that are largely funded by the NHS are providing similar bedded services. Our unique day hospice and support clinics remain fully open

for people needing end of life support and together with our staff and Board of Trustees we are now developing our three year strategy as well as plans to expand the work we do across the East Dorset community, delivering our exceptional trusted hospice care where it is really needed, closer to home and we are delighted to share endorsements from those who support” Clare continues, “It costs nearly £1.3 million to run our charitable Hospice each year, we receive just 20% of our income from the NHS. I would like to ask the people of east Dorset to help us to deliver these new services by supporting us with a gift of just £5 per month, by asking the companies that they work at to support us, or by holding a fundraising event. Together we can help to improve local end of life care for those that really need it. ” Eugine Yafele, Chief Executive of Dorset Healthcare, said: “We are delighted to be working with LewisManning Hospice Care, by delivering more end of life services across our community and there will be clear benefits to local people at the end of their lives.” The move into the community has been welcomed by key partners including Dorset Commissioners, Patrons and volunteers. Tim Goodson, Chief Officer at Dorset CCG said: “I am pleased that Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is taking its valuable services out into our community to benefit people closer to home.” Angus Campbell a supporter of the charity and Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Dorset said: “As a Patron of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, I am delighted to support such an inspired plan to develop wider hospice care services and bring them closer to the people of Dorset by reaching out into our wider community. I would hope that this is the start of a new and exciting evolution in such essential services.” www.lewis-manning.co.uk 39

National tech initiative Super Connect Series returns to Dorset Global Entrepreneurship Week sees national tech initiative Super Connect Series return to Dorset on Wednesday 20 November 2019 as part of a road show covering 12 cities across the UK and Ireland. The event, Super Connect Bournemouth for MedTech & AI, is being run by Dorset-based Empact Ventures in partnership with Hays and sponsored by Dorset LEP, CityFibre and UnLtd brings together tech start-ups and scale-ups with decision-makers at private and public sector organisations to explore collaboration and funding support. It builds on three successful events in Dorset earlier this year held with Hays, Mazars, BCP Council, Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Dorset Engineering and Manufacturing Cluster, as well as pilots in Bristol, London, Cambridge and Leeds.

Empact Ventures’ Founder and CEO, Kosta Mavroulakis, who lives in Christchurch, said: “Bournemouth has the potential to become an established tech cluster in the next decade beyond its strong digital roots. Our team is working from here to showcase its pockets of excellence, and super connect it to the wider global tech ecosystem to create new business development, innovation sourcing and/or investment opportunities for all involved.” Finn Morgan, Business Engagement and Dorset Gateway Manager said: “Dorset LEP’s role is to promote and drive local economic growth across Dorset. Working with partners to develop opportunities supporting innovative and ambitious businesses to succeed is of vital importance to us. MedTech and CareTech is emerging as a key area in Dorset’s Local Industrial Strategy and the

Super Connect Bournemouth event is a great opportunity to hear from, and engage with, a range of businesses in the region – as well as those from outside of the Dorset business ecosystem – about their plans for business growth.” Martin Pardey, Business Director at Hays said: “We have been delighted to co-host a number of pitch days in conjunction with Empact Ventures. These events are incredibly well received by the business community and are a fantastic opportunity for Hays to show that we are at the heart of the local tech ecosystem, as well as showcase how we can have a positive impact on helping people and businesses to grow. We’re able to work with start-ups by giving insightful advice and guidance at the early stages of their growth, as well as add value to a number of our innovation-focused clients by giving them access to a relevant pool of start-up businesses already providing tech solutions to the problems they are trying to solve themselves.” Rachel Clarke, Knowledge Exchange Advisor at BU said: “Medical technology is a strength of BU and we know the importance of supporting initiatives that generate collaborations and bring together key players in this area, so we’re delighted to support this event.” For more information and to register, please visit www.superconnectseries.com/pitchdays/

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

A Mountain to Climb: Live your Life to the Full Dorset Chamber member, Joel Nurser, has set himself the very tall feat of climbing the 5,380 metres to Everest Base Camp in memory of his Mum who sadly died of Pancreatic Cancer aged just 59yrs old. In 2016, Joel raised £5,180 for Marie Curie climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This November, he is trying to add a further £5,380 - the height of Everest Base Camp - to make a total of £10,560 raised. “The thought of helping others receive support when they need it most like we did, drives my commitment to this challenge and fundraising for Marie Curie.” Joel Nurser is the Operations Director at Composite Profiles UK, and over the past 10 weeks, has been sharing his thoughts and tips about his upcoming venture in a weekly Q&A. The full interview is published here or can be found online at www. compositeuk.com/everest. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/joel-nurser1 Lukla Airport is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, how do you feel about flying into it? “Yes, I have to fly into Lukla. Its runway is only 527m long on an 11% gradient, 9000m above sea level. If you imagine a running track is 400m, it gives you an idea of how unbelievably short it is! Also, the high altitude means low pressure, which apparently makes it really difficult for pilots to land. So how do I feel about landing there? In all honesty, if I crash and die, it’s out of my control so there’s nothing I can do about it. Maybe that’s my Mum’s parting words that are telling me to ‘live my life to the full’. If we didn’t do things for the fear of it, we would live much more boring lives. I am looking forward to the views!” How high is Everest Base Camp? How long will the climb take? What will you eat? “It’s 5.5miles high but it actually grows 4mm a year! By the time I arrive at Base Camp, I will have trekked 78hrs at high altitude in temperatures down to -20. I will be fine though, I am fit and determined so will just get on with it. As for food, meat is carried on the backs of Yaks and Sherpas without refrigeration, so we have been advised to stick to a veggie diet!” What kit do you need to climb to Everest Base Camp? “The hardest part of preparing, training aside, is working out the vaccinations. So far, I’ve had Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, Rabies and maybe Malaria. I have bought some pieces of specialist kit like a down insulated jacket and Goretex trousers but I have hired stuff too. You do have to budget this in though, I’ve probably spent around £800 on kit on top of the cost of the trip.” What was your knowledge of climbing beforehand? “None really except for Kilimanjaro. Earlier this year, I saw Conrad Anker at the Lighthouse. He is one of the world's greatest climbers and is a true inspiration for people like me who essentially lead quite ‘normal’ lives. More recently, I have discovered Ed Stafford, he’s an explorer and adventurer and puts himself into the most challenging situations to push his personal growth. We’re all capable of pushing ourselves and by training our resilience as well as our body we can achieve much more than we believe is possible. 44

November 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

Everest Base Camp is a tough challenge but I don’t think you have to be an elite athlete to do it, you just have to train. In the words of Ross Edgley, “Be so naive you start, but so stubborn you finish.” What training have you undertaken? “You can’t really simulate high altitude training in the UK so really it’s all about building strength, stamina and endurance. There are some long days trekking in Nepal so the best preparation is to walk for long periods at a time in the UK. I have walked several sections of the coast path in Dorset, had a week in Exmoor, where I ran most days and subjected my family to numerous hill walks. I also climbed Snowdon, which is the highest altitude I will climb before heading to Nepal. But really the bulk of my training is done in the gym to build core strength, which will help keep my back strong.” How do you prepare for altitude sickness? “There is no failsafe way to prepare for altitude sickness, the tips are to climb slowly, eat carbs, avoid alcohol and drink water but in reality you are going to feel it, it’s just a question of how much. For most people, the symptoms kick in around 2,500m but it’s impossible to say who will suffer, there is no correlation between fitness and how the effects are felt.” How did Marie Curie help your family? “Marie Curie provide hands-on-care in your own home and in hospices helping families dealing with terminal illness. They also offer bereavement support, which is priceless when you need to grieve, support others and arrange the practical matters that need to be dealt with after losing someone. The amazing thing is that all donations are used within the local community. It doesn’t go into some big central pot, it’s grass roots fundraising.” You climbed Mount Snowdon in a training walk, what top tips can you give? “To choose a season that suits your ability and take appropriate clothing and equipment. We went in October so set off in the dark at 6am but it soon became light. Some people walk up in trainers, jeans and a jumper with only a bottle of water. /company/dorset-chamber/

others hike up in all the latest technical gear with huge rucksacks. You don’t need anything majorly specialised, but climbing Snowdon is more than a stroll around the park, so you do need to be prepared.” Are you scared? When will you reach Everest Base Camp? “No, I’m not scared. There’s no point in ruining an adventure of a lifetime by worrying about something you can’t control. Well I guess you can control it a bit by being fit and prepared, which I am, so I am just looking forward to it. I fly into Lukla on 4th Nov. Lukla stands for the ‘Place with many goats and sheep’ so I expect to see lots. We’re trekking along a centuries-old trading trail between Nepal and Tibet so that’s pretty cool. 11 November is the planned day to arrive at base camp, weather permitting. Poignantly, it’s Remembrance Day. We’ll set off at dawn and traverse the Khumbu Glacier towards Gorak Shep, which translates as ‘Graveyard of Crows’, that’s where we’ll stay that night. I arrive back into Heathrow on 17 Nov and my plan is to sleep, if my gorgeous wife and children let me!” The $million question, what’s next? “As my family grows up, I think the next challenge will be one for all of us. We are keen to walk the Inca trail and explore the wilds of Japan but who knows. I recently met Pip Hare* who is embarking on the toughest race of all – the Vendee Globe. You should check her out, she’s a huge inspiration. So maybe there’s a sailing adventure to be had with my family in the next few years. We’ll see.” *Composite Profiles is supporting Pip Hare’s Vendee Globe Campaign www. piphareoceanracing.com Help Joel reach his £5,380 target – all funds go towards supporting local families www.justgiving.com/fundraising/joel-nurser1 Please share Joel’s story www.compositeuk.com/everest

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Residents give Dorset care home top marks Residents and families at a Dorset care home have given it an extremely rare ‘perfect score’ on a national public review site. Bourne View in Poole is one of only four homes among 18,000 in the UK to achieve the maximum rating on Carehome.co.uk. While 46 homes are rated ‘ten out of ten’ on the independent site, only Bourne View and three smaller homes elsewhere in the country have perfect scores across all criteria. It means that each reviewer has rated 12 different factors at the highest possible level and no score has needed to be ‘rounded up’ to arrive at the overall rating. “It’s almost impossible to get a perfect score,” said Sohail Daniel, Home Manager at the Colten Care home which opened in March 2019. “Naturally, we’re absolutely thrilled.” To achieve a Carehome.co.uk rating, homes must first have a critical mass of reviews and are then scored up to a maximum of five stars across 12 quality factors. These reflect the overall standard of the home, its staff, management, rooms, facilities, food and drink,

the care and support it provides, its cleanliness, the extent to which people are treated with dignity, the activities on offer, how safe and secure people feel, and the value for money it demonstrates. On all these factors, Bourne View has scored the maximum five points from all its 16 reviewers so far. All said they were ‘extremely likely’ to recommend the home to others. Resident Ena Potter wrote: “From the first day I arrived at Bourne View I was treated with dignity and respect by all members of the staff. They have cared for my every need and have been so considerate and helpful.” Among the relatives’ comments, Wendy Gardner said: “Excellent doesn’t even go half way to describe this wonderful home. The care my husband is receiving is exemplary with everyone, without exception, so very kind, friendly and helpful. “Any request made is dealt with immediately and with a smile. The actual building, public rooms, suites, and so on, are divine. One couldn’t get

better in a 5-star hotel. I know my husband will be cherished here for the rest of his life.” The art deco-themed home, in Langside Avenue on the Poole-Bournemouth border, offers residential, assisted living and nursing care in a spacious, purpose-built environment reflecting the latest thinking in elderly people’s care. Overlooking the Bourne Valley nature reserve, it features 68 en suite bedrooms and two guest suites along with a rooftop garden and Canopy Café, piano lounge, hair salon, spa and hotel-style foyer. Room names reflect both the art deco period and nearby Dorset geography, with titles such as the Cotton Club Café, Hepburn Dining Room, Rockefeller Bistro and Sandbanks Sitting Room. Yellows’ open top passengers set to top 100,000 More than 100,000 people are likely to have caught one of Yellow Buses’ iconic open top vehicles by the time the operating season ends. Yellow Buses recorded more than 84,000 passenger journeys on Buster’s Beach Bus between Easter, when the service started, by the end of August. And with the service continuing to run between Boscombe and Sandbanks – now on a shoulder season hourly timetable – until the end of September, it is expected that the six-figure total will be smashed. The Bournemouth-based company introduced the open top service, named after the Yellows’ popular mascot, after repeated requests from passengers. It gives great views of coastal scenes and serves many of the resort’s cliff-top hotels. Buster’s Beach Bus was new for summer 2019, but incorporated a section of route between Bournemouth and Alum Chine which already operated with open top buses. During the first six weeks of the operation the open-toppers had already carried 24,000 passengers, the vast majority of them holidaymakers, and the success story continued throughout the summer.

Greendale complete XLR Terminal David Squire, Managing Director of Yellow Buses said: “For a newly introduced service the number of customers that we have carried has been amazing. We are really pleased with the success of the opentoppers and they will definitely be back for 2020.” David, who recently led a management buyout of the company from its French owners, added: “We will be investing in our open top fleet for the summer of 2020 by buying some newly converted vehicles to be branded in our iconic Yellow Bus livery featuring, of course, Buster Bear.” The extended route with kick off again in time for the Easter school holidays on April 5, 2020. Timetables for the rest of the 2019 operating season can be found online at www.yellowbuses.co.uk.

£562,400 National Lottery grant awarded Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has been awarded a £562,400 grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund towards the Wild Brownsea project. Wild Brownsea has also attracted funding from many other sources and the total project value is over £1,000,000. Made possible by National Lottery players, the project will deliver new access, wildlife observation and learning facilities, together with a 3-year programme of activities to enable people of all backgrounds and abilities to learn about, enjoy and play an active role in managing the unique natural heritage of Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour in Dorset and is home to a stunning array of wildlife. For its size Brownsea Island is one of the most biodiverse sites in England. There are 334 plant species, 238 bird species, almost 1,000 beetle species and 900 moth species present on the island. It is also one of the last strongholds in southern England for the iconic red squirrel. The Brownsea Lagoon is perhaps the most striking wildlife feature of the whole island, with its shallow waters hosting important breeding colonies of sandwich and common terns and attracting thousands of over-wintering wading birds including flocks of avocets reaching 1300+ birds, almost half of the UK’s overwintering population. Stuart Hobley, Area Director London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “The National Lottery is turning 25 this year. Since 1994 National Lottery players have raised an incredible £1.6billion for landscapes and nature. Nature is our oldest form of heritage and access to it can have huge benefits, it is also our responsibility to care for its future, which is why we have made funding for landscapes and nature a key priority for National Lottery funding. “So we’re delighted to support this project which will transform access to Brownsea Island and put people at the heart of securing a bright future for the island for generations to come.” Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Director of Development, Brian Bleese, said, “This is wonderful news. The funding will help us build a sustainable future for the wildlife of Brownsea Island and to enable people to benefit from regular contact with nature. Contact with nature has enormous health and wellbeing benefits and Wild Brownsea will realise the potential of Brownsea Island to engage and inspire people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to make the natural heritage part of their lives.” Brownsea Island is owned by the National Trust and Dorset Wildlife Trust has managed the northern section of the island since 1962. Dorset Wildlife Trust will work closely with the National Trust to make sure that every visitor to Brownsea Island has a great wildlife experience and opportunities to explore and learn. National Trust General Manager for Brownsea Island Angela Cott said: "We're delighted to hear that The National Lottery Heritage Fund is investing in Brownsea Island. We've been working together on plans to improve the way visitors experience the island, making navigation easier and sharing stories of the rich wildlife habitats and diverse history here. We are pleased to be working alongside our island partners, the Dorset Wildlife Trust, to do this; and we look forward to seeing work begin over the winter." Post Brexit supply chain cyber warning Businesses making changes to their supply chains post Brexit must ensure new arrangements are secure, a leading expert has warned. Matt Horan, security director of leading cybersecurity company C3IA Solutions, said some companies may overlook this aspect of any new relationship. He said that some firms might be so keen to organise different suppliers that they could leave themselves open to cyber-attacks. One vulnerability in a supply chain can have major knock-on effects at all other businesses involved. Organising the architecture and information assurance involved in often complicated supply chains is a crucial component of reducing risk and ultimately ensuring smooth business. Matt, a former Royal Signaller whose business is based in Poole, Dorset, and works across the public and private sectors, said: “This is a serious issue that could massively impact on business. “Whatever happens with regard to Brexit, businesses are now correctly working to mitigate against supply problems, especially if a so-called ‘no deal’ exit occurs. “Companies obviously want to ensure their work is unhindered and this has led in some cases to stockpiling and also to lining up new suppliers – possibly from outside the EU. “While these transitions might maintain an effective supply chain it is imperative that security is not overlooked. “We have seen the results of breaches in supply chains and one weakness can have major repercussions; if you drop a stone in a pond the ripples will travel right to the periphery. “Existing supply chains might have been built up over years with special regard made to information assurance and security. “But when putting links together in haste this is one aspect that might not have the priority it ought to. “It is crucial that business remains smooth – but also secure. “We work both in the UK and around the world and we see at first hand where vulnerabilities lie and how they are exploited. “Whether the motive is financial - through ransomware for example - purely malicious, political or due to industrial espionage, any weakness will be identified. “Whether your supply chain map looks like a cobweb or whether you do very little business abroad, the same warnings apply. “In serious cases an attack could not only prove disastrous for business but could affect the nation’s economy.” www.c3ia.co.uk

Dorset’s first private cardiac centre celebrates Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital is celebrating the fourth anniversary of the opening of Dorset’s first private cardiac centre - coinciding with the hospital completing more than 1,000 cardiac procedures. Opened in 2015, the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Cardiology Centre offers patients a full cardiac service, including echocardiography and catheterisation laboratory, an out-patient diagnostic and interventional day case facility. The centre oversees the full patient pathway, from managing the initial consultation through to preadmission assessment and caring for the patient on the day and following the procedure. A cardiac rehabilitation programme is also in place to help patients return to normal activities, while educating them on topics such as nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. David McNair, hospital director at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, comments: “Our hard-working and designated team of specialists in cardiac care, which includes nurses, physiologists, radiographers and consultants, have carried out 1,100 day case procedures since the facility opened four years ago. This is a fantastic achievement and has had a positive impact on the lives of many patients and their families. “Patient safety and quality of care are of utmost importance to us and since opening the cardiac

centre in 2015 there have been no reported postprocedural complications or emergency transfers to a surgical centre from our day case procedures. Over the years we have grown and developed this service to ensure that our staff are able to deliver great care to our patients.” One of the centre’s first patients, Linda Marshall, underwent an electrophysiology (EP) ablation following investigations which revealed she was suffering from atrial fibrillation, an abnormally fast heartbeat. Linda says: “I was the first patient to have an EP ablation procedure at the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Cardiology Centre, a procedure which has given me a new lease of life. My illness affected so much of my life, I wasn’t asked to look after my grandchildren when I was ill and that really upset me. I’m just so grateful to the Nuffield Health cardiac team for all they did to get me back to health, everyone in the team was fantastic providing great care and looking after me. I love my life now.” Continual investment in the centre has enabled the team to undertake a full range of procedures, including treatment for cardiac rhythm disorders, simple and complex device implantations and treatment for blocked arteries. The team included the system engineers Javier, John and Aistis with the business development intern Josslyn and even the managing director Roy. Roy, a seasoned jogger, was up for the challenge however, the rest of the team did not have as much experience. Therefore, a training plan was put together for the next two months With training done and T-shirts handed out the day had dawned sunny. Two friends, Cookie and Sophie paced Roy to 7 miles then he dropped behind as planned to complete the remaining 6.1 miles to finish in 2 hours 1 minute only two minutes behind schedule. Javier, John, Aistis and Josslyn all completed ahead of their schedules. It was a beautiful day and vistas glimpsed between fraught mental attempts to override physical alerts and keep the stride together whilst the spirit encouraged onwards were well worth the effort. /company/dorset-chamber/

Nick Groves (Pictured), one of the founding directors of Romsey based WFBA consulting civil and structural engineers, expects the construction industry to remain buoyant in the south once the reality of Brexit and the implications are known. He is confident that most of the projects delayed by some investors will be given the green light for construction once positivity is regained. “Our investment in qualified people has continued and we now have our largest team since the business started in 1995, currently numbering 32 with an additional 2 engineers to join next month. The demand we are facing is from many market sectors including Commercial (office, retail, manufacturing and warehousing) Residential, Education, Hotel and Leisure, Refurbishment and Marine related projects, and as our capability

Dorset firm’s £2m investment

A Dorset recycling and renewable energy company has signalled its intent to grow after investing £1.3m on new equipment in the last year – with another £1m of spending due. Eco Sustainable Solutions based in Parley has maintained its position as a pioneer in the industry by continued investment. Its new equipment includes a £600,000 Untha Wood Shredder, two soil screen machines costing £500,000, a £160,000 loading shovel and an Agri forklift at £70,000. The business processes more than 300,000 tonnes of material each year across its four facilities in Dorset. Its activities are varied; from generating heat and electricity to producing landscaping products such as topsoil, compost and woodchips. Eco’s 32 acre site in Parley has grown substantially since the firm was launched in 1994 and the business employs more than 40 people. By the end of the year it will have spent another million pounds on expanding and improving its wood recycling operation. Peter Hardy, Eco’s commercial director, said: “Our business has grown rapidly because we identify trends and invest in order to take advantage. “Our model is simple and involves taking waste then recycling and reusing it. Just 0.5 per cent of everything we take in goes to landfill – we find a use for everything else. “This commitment necessarily involves acquiring the latest technology and machinery and also enough of it to cope with the evergrowing workload. “Through this latest investment we can offer a better and quicker service, process more materials and continue to grow. “We have a busy site next to the airport and with the increasing adoption of recycling and green policies by government and business we expect to get busier.” Last year, Eco’s business operations actively prevented an astounding 74,780 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted into the atmosphere. This was as a direct result of the recycling and recovery of over 250,000 tonnes of organic waste, and the generation of electricity from our renewable energy sources. Across all our recycling and energy operations, Eco only produced 3,200 tonnes of of CO2e. www.thisiseco.co.uk

Good Oaks Wins National Award for Innovation

The team at Poole-based home care provider, Good Oaks Home Care, is celebrating after winning the award for Innovation in Home Care at the National Leaders in Care Awards held in Birmingham last week. Good Oaks was named the winner ahead of national and international home care providers in the innovation category. The home care company was recognised for its commitment to taking responsibility for its carbon emissions, by becoming one of the first home care providers to become carbon neutral. The company recently gained the Carbon Footprint Standard accreditation following an audit of its carbon emissions. The Innovation in Home Care award recognises providers who have devised creative ways to reduce risk, improve operation efficiency and most importantly, improve outcomes for individuals. Good Oaks was also recognised for its development of the Good Oaks Operating System (GOOS) for its franchise partners. This interactive, visual repository of advice includes step-by-step guidance and a bank of template documents and is pre-installed on each computer. The system was designed to make searching for essential documents and information much easier for staff, allowing them to find answers faster and work more efficiently and independently. This programme asks staff to record when they go the extra mile and make a positive impact on the lives of Good Oaks’ clients. Every two months, two members of staff are chosen to receive a prize to acknowledge their commitment to providing enabling care that really makes a difference. Zoe Kelly, Operations Director at Good Oaks, collected the award for the Company, having also been shortlisted in the Registered Manager of the Year 50

category. She said: “I was absolutely thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the rest of the team, who work so hard to make Good Oaks stand out from care companies across the UK. “Innovation will be so important in dealing with the many changes and challenges facing the care sector in the coming years, and we want to be at the forefront of it. One of the pressing issues facing all businesses is climate change and it is essential that other home care companies follow our lead, to calculate, reduce and offset their carbon emissions. As far as we know, we’re the only home care provider to have this accreditation and this needs to change. “Reading the Above and Beyond Rewards programme submissions is always really inspiring. We are proud of the dedication that our carers show to our clients. They are constantly thinking of new ways to improve the lives of our clients and to ensure they are enjoying life at home.” For more information, visit goodoakshome.co.uk/franchise.

T

his month I have felt like Lee Majors from the 80’s TV show The Fall Guy as The Navara Off Roader AT32 is one mighty 4x4 pick-up truck. What makes this different is that it’s been designed as a full off roader with Land Rover rivaling abilities. Some of the improvement are obvious like the snorkel, 32” tyres and underbody protection. When it comes to technical ability the Navara AT32 can wade water up to 800mm, that’s not far off the new Land Rover Defender. It also has independent front and rear diff locks and increased ground clearance by 20mm. With a ‘braked’ trailer pulling capacity of 3,500kg and payload of 1,027kg.

Nissan Navara Off Roader AT32

Inside its typical Navara, with luxuries like full leather heated seats, DAB radio, Sat Nav and Cruise control. It feels very car like but with an amazing elevated driving position. The 2.3 dci engine feeds the switchable 2 / 4WD modes with 190BHP although you feel this in torque rather than speed. The Off-Roader AT32 has Nissan’s 7 speed automatic gearbox which is smooth and has a semi-automatic ability. Benefit in Kind (BIK) varies for cars but is set at a flat rate for vans and qualifying pickups. In 2019/2020 that amount stands at £3,430. This means an annual tax bill of £686 for employees at the 20% income tax level (that’s about £57.17 a month), while those in the 40% band will be charged £1,372 a year (which is around £114.34 a month). This is considerably cheaper than most cars and you also receive Nissan’s impressive 5 year warrantee.

In my hands I managed at best 35mpg falling to 26mpg which is in line with published figures. I loved the high driving position although parking a vehicle that is 5,330mm long is an adventure itself in town. Overall this is as hardcore as the Nissan Navara gets and I liked it in white although many will choose the darker colours available. If Bear Grills has a 4x4 pick up it will definitely be one of these. If you are inspired, this demonstrator is available for £28,995+VAT speak to David Banks on 07917 685924
