DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME

It’s been a busy few months in Dorset Chamber as we continue to push forward with the support we offer our members and our policy work at a strategic level, campaigning and representing the voice of business on key issues affecting economic growth.

B

oth areas are a key part of our accreditation with the British Chambers of Commerce and August saw our bi-annual accreditation inspection. The accreditation looks carefully at all areas within the Chamber including our policy work, services we offer our members, international trade support, our finances and governance. It’s a rigorous audit and I am delighted we did well, in fact our improvements as a Chamber were noticeable, and we continue to meet the required standards as one of fifty-three accredited Chambers. Our accreditation means we are part of a national and international network of accredited Chambers and we represent our members at the highest levels in Westminster and Whitehall. If I can mention the B word… We’ve been steadily ramping up the support we can offer businesses around Brexit. This includes publishing some excellent guidance from the British Chambers of Commerce and also working closely with partners such as the Dorset LEP, HMRC and the Department for International Trade in promoting and supporting events that are taking place across the area. I’m delighted to announce that, supported by both Dorset Council and BCP Council, we will be providing a Brexit Business Support Service, available and free to all businesses in Dorset. The project is the development phase and more later

but do call for information. One of the best ways of finding out how we can best support our members is by coming out and meeting business owners and teams and finding out more about the business. Over the last few weeks I’ve meet with Poole BID, Locomotivation, Douch Family Funeral Directors, Composite Profiles UK Ltd, Bournemouth and Poole College, Purple HR and ITSB. All very different businesses and organisations and it’s a reminder of what an incredible and diverse business community we have in Dorset. All have a common theme of being ambitious, customer-focused organisations and I always find huge value and enjoy visiting businesses. Finally, I’d really encourage all our members to proactively use your membership to really get the ROI we can offer. From huge PR opportunities in this magazine and our website, discounted services from our members, access to a fantastic events programme, a dedicated legal and HR helpline. We also provide ourselves on being a friendly, warm and approachable community where business friendships are formed. If you’d like to find out more about how Dorset Chamber could benefit you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Taking Action for Dorset Following the approval of the Future Dorset proposal by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, April 1st 2019 saw the historic formation of two new unitary authorities for Dorset, BCP Council and Dorset Council from nine authorities. This transformation, from nine authorities to two, whilst hugely complex, offers Dorset tremendous opportunities as we look to the future. Dorset Chamber has been working closely with both Councils and I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with both Chief Executives to understand their priorities and get their take on issues facing Dorset.

IG:

I’m delighted to have the opportunity to meet with you both together and a warm welcome to Dorset Chamber. The creation of two new unitary authorities for the whole of Dorset from what was nine councils is obviously hugely significant for Dorset. Let me begin by asking, how are things going in terms of merged operations and the development of the new authorities? It’s obviously a huge task and must be incredibly complex.

MP:

It has been a huge task! I’m extremely pleased and proud to say that everything went to plan. We had a smooth start on 1 April this year, with all council services continuing to be delivered for residents as normal. Thursday 2 May saw the local elections for the new authority and we soon had our new councillors and Cabinet in place. Going from 176 councillors to 82 was a big change. Over the last few months, we’ve been working with our elected members on developing Dorset Council’s five-year plan. The first draft of this goes to Cabinet for approval on 1 October. It sets out our strategic priorities, and we’ll be talking with businesses, partner organisations, residents and employees about our proposed priorities during October and November, so that we can work together more effectively and efficiently. Our other key focus since 1 April has been bringing together services from the former county, district and borough councils in order to make efficiencies and operate as one council. I think it’s safe to say it’s been a learning curve, but has delivered what we set out in our submission to government, namely reducing the cost of service delivery through having one council and not six in Dorset.

GF:

Shaping the organisational design of the 12th largest unitary council in the UK, whilst making sure we continue to provide efficient and effective services and that we keep people safe, is certainly enough to keep us fully occupied. We are heavily engaged in our transformation 4

programme designing the contemporary organisation that we want BCP Council to be. This involves setting out our future vision for the places of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and all the other towns and communities that make up our conurbation, stretching our levels of ambition, and challenging preconceptions about how our services can be delivered in the most modern and efficient way. If you factor in external events such as the national political uncertainty and the renegotiation of our trading relationships with Europe, we are doing all this under very challenging financial circumstances and against the backdrop of a rapidly changing environment. A combination of restructuring, managerial reorganisation, agreement of our corporate priorities, and budget reviews means businesses and residents should see the pace now pick up with harmonising services across the three towns

IG:

Dorset Chamber worked closely with the councils in the business consultation in advance of the re-organisation and also formally supported the application to the Secretary of State to agree to the formation of the new authorities. During the consultation it was clear that there was generally huge support for this from the business community and they could see the advantages of streamlined operations, the ability to develop strategic plans for the conurbation and rural Dorset and of course reduce costs. How do you see these opportunities and advantages developing?

GF:

There is huge potential to strengthen and secure our area’s future. We now have the scale to compete more effectively and to win more external investment for the area and access to more government and infrastructure funds. With the right approach, our challenges can present great opportunities and we can develop the huge potential of our dynamic region. We know what we need to do, we just need to get on and do it, modernising the infrastructure to create a digital /company/dorset-chamber/

and dynamic city-region. As we streamline our operations and develop clarity around our operating model, businesses across the conurbation should see a change in how we work that makes us more efficient and agile, better able to respond to the needs of business at pace.

MP:

Both Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council are working together with the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to develop an integrated Local Industrial Strategy. The aim of this is to deliver a clear and understandable vision for the whole area. Dorset is open for business and can attract international investment, as well as supporting existing businesses to be sustainable and grow. We hope that this will help raise the profile of the county and attract funding for key programmes of work designed to boost economic activity. We want to put Dorset on the business map for the region, nationally and internationally; with our fabulous coast and countryside Dorset is literally the natural place to do business.

IG:

And of course as local authorities you still face major funding challenges. How are you proposing to continue to meet the budget cuts you need to make and how will the authorities manage to meet the ever increasing costs of adult social care, particularly with an aging population?

MP:

Nationally, as I’m sure you’re aware, the funding situation for councils is extremely challenging. Government funding for local authorities has reduced significantly over recent years: councils will have lost 60p out of every £1 the Government once provided to spend on delivering local services in the last eight years. And Dorset Council no longer receives any revenue support grant. We are very dependent on council tax for funding – 82% of Dorset Council’s funding comes from council tax. However, the recent settlement will give us some additional funding for one year to deliver key services, what we are lobbying government for

/dorsetchamber

@DorsetChamber

on co-designing services with the people who use them, so that we fully understand and meet their needs. In the meantime, our councillors are continuing to lobby central government for proper funding for Dorset as part of a fairer funding review.

IG:

Let’s talk about our identity as a county. We know that BCP has the ‘city region by the sea’ aspiration and we also of course have the image of rolling hills and beautiful countryside – how do you see brand Dorset?

MP:

is a longer term, fairer funding settlement for Dorset. As you’ve mentioned, we also face increasing costs from the pressure of providing social care for a growing aging population. As people live longer, it becomes more likely that they need help and support as they get older. Children’s social care is also seeing increasing numbers of children being diagnosed with special educational needs and we also have a duty to protect children at risk of harm.

GF:

The demand on health and social care services is incessant, and continuing to grow, but BCP Council is not alone in facing this challenge. Our public health work is designed to deliver prevention at scale, helping people stay healthy and avoid getting unwell. We recognise though this is not enough to tackle the challenges that an aging population presents. Digitally-enabling our staff and streamlining our working practices will be essential to making sure our people are working as efficiently as they can, whilst getting the best outcomes for the people who need us. Overall, we still face some very challenging financial pressures, with the likely need to make £15m of savings against a net spend of approximately £275m, which is over 5% savings, going into next financial year. That would be easier to do if this wasn’t the tenth consecutive year of making savings. Our clear aim is to make the council lives within its means now and in future. This means working and operating more efficiently to reduce costs – work that is well underway now. We’re reducing our pay bill by £5.2m this financial year by taking out duplication where services and teams have come together, with further significant cost savings to come next year. It also means transforming how we provide services. We’re starting to look at how we’ll redesign services, so they are affordable for the future, but making sure they’re good and highquality services that the people of Dorset deserve. We’re looking at greater use of digital technology to help with data sharing, machine learning and AI, but also to help with our social care needs. A simple piece of kit to stop someone with dementia from wandering off, can help them to live independently, with loved ones being able to keep an eye via an app, can also save thousands of pounds on residential or live-in care. We’re also very focused more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Dorset has a strong local, national and international brand. It’s a place that many have an affinity with. Defined by its unique UNESCO world heritage (Jurassic) coastline, known as the home of modern palaeontology, we want to continue to develop Dorset as a great place to live, work and visit through increasing accessibility – virtual and physical infrastructure. Many people have a personal emotional connection with Dorset, either having been born here or having visited here on holiday…what we want is to retain our young people in a vibrant economy whilst also attracting people with the right skills to develop the economy further.

GF:

We strive to be the dynamic heart of the south with wellbeing, sustainability and investment at the centre of what we do. Our draft Corporate Plan, on which we are currently consulting, is clear about the priorities for the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation. With 15 miles of sandy beaches and 19 areas of special scientific interest which make up one fifth of our area, the natural environment is hugely important in defining why people love to live and work here. Our towns provide a rich cultural offer, with five Arts Council National Portfolio Organisations and a depth of grassroots talent as well as a world class harbour, a range of sporting prowess and, of course, a premiership football club in AFC Bournemouth. It is the combination of our environment, the leisure and cultural offer and our strong and modern economy that make up the area’s identity, meaning that it is logical to choose our conurbation as a place to relocate to and invest in.

IG:

We all know that Dorset is a fantastic place to live and work – but let’s talk about some of the issues and challenges facing business, starting with the affordability of housing. Many businesses we represent voice their concerns to us around the affordability of housing, or lack of affordability, as a real barrier to people moving in to the area, effectively preventing muchneeded skilled workers from moving in to the area. Many businesses state this is having a direct impact on business growth. How do you think we need to address this issue?

GF:

Christchurch and Poole because of the breath-taking environment. As we develop a BCP Council Local Plan we will be giving careful consideration to the housing model, and how to balance the needs for affordable housing with sustainable development that doesn’t impact negatively on our environment. We know this is a priority for local people and we are encouraging affordable and social housing development wherever we can. MP: Dorset does have one of the biggest gaps nationally between average house price and

average salary earnings. That’s why we see the creation of more affordable housing as one of Dorset Council’s top five priorities in our emerging corporate plan. We’ll develop appropriate, affordable and sustainable accommodation, maximising the use of council-owned assets and providing long-term solutions to some our areas of greatest need. We will bring more long-term empty properties back into occupation by working with private and social landlords. Where we need your help: as you know, the challenge in Dorset is that while many people accept we need more housing, no one wants that new housing built near them. We would really appreciate more vocal and visible support from local businesses about the need for more affordable housing. As our current workforce retires, not many people move away from Dorset, so we need new housing for the next generation of workers. We will be working on a new Local Plan for Dorset, which we are aiming to be adopted by 2024.

IG:

One of our main challenges, and there is no quick fix, is connectivity – in terms of digital and physical. Again, roads and traffic are huge concerns for business. We only need to look at the road network for cargo going in and out of Poole Port and the congestion in the conurbation is obviously a huge issue – what are your thoughts on the long-term solutions we need to adopt to try an tackle this issue?

MP:

97% of premises in Dorset LEP area have access to superfast broadband but only around 3% have access to full fibre which provides gigabit-capable connections. While superfast speeds are adequate for most people at the moment, the requirement will increase. The current Government has the ambitious target for everybody to have access to full fibre by 2025. Dorset Council is using every avenue available to increase full fibre availability. This includes all connections being made through the current BT contract, working with suppliers to extend provision through their commercial rollout (i.e. without government intervention) and other activity. We need to have positive conversations at all levels with regards to strategic transport links. The Western Gateway Sub National Transport Body has been set up to provide a stronger, single, voice to government with regards to the transport priorities for the wider area. Links between the south coast and its ports, the West of England and the M4 corridor and beyond have been identified as a key issue for the STB and by key stakeholders along with general journey time reliability and a reliable network. A strategic transport plan is planned for development and adoption in 2021 to make the case for investment on priority routes. We will continue to engage with our key transport partners including the Department for Transport, Highways England and neighbouring authorities with the aim of maximising transport investment to deliver planned growth effectively. Within the BCP conurbation and wider South East Dorset area, schemes are being looked at to maximize the availability of non-car transport alternatives for shorter trips. Ultimately this will help to remove unnecessary local trips from the congested network to provide better journey time reliability for commercial traffic.

Continued on page 6... 5

Continued from page 5...

GF:

Transport remains a big challenge. Every town and city has congestion, and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are by no means the UK’s worst, but we accept our responsibility to do more to enable people to move around the conurbation more easily. However, our councillors also want to see more emphasis being put on sustainable transport options so that we are conscious of the impact of transportation on the environment and reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible. We need to put more emphasis on low-carbon transport, including cycling and public transport and not just focus on increasing roadspace for cars. The Council is leading the Smart Places agenda, investing in digital infrastructure and prioritising the development of a high quality, integrated and low carbon transport system. This way we can reduce the need to travel and encourage sustainable transport solutions. Investment is critical, and if government backs our bid to the Transforming Cities Fund, we could see the single largest investment in the area for decades, with the emphasis being on sustainable transport infrastructure.

IG:

Dorset Chamber is very keen to work in partnership in supporting business growth in Dorset – what do you think the key issues for businesses in Dorset are and how we can best support these businesses in terms of growth?

GF:

Digital connectivity is a significant focus for our economic development effort, alongside sustainable travel and housing. Support for business is also a factor, and we have a strong sector-specific approach that our Economic Development teams have adopted. Our inward investment and economic development work will focus on supporting these sectors by creating the environment they need to flourish – and that means the right infrastructure for aspiring talent. However, we also need to ensure that our young people get the qualifications that our economy will need in future years to ensure that we have a viable and growing employment base for local people, enabling them to earn good salaries and work in modern settings.

MP:

Our new economic development strategy is likely to focus on improving productivity, skills and infrastructure with a firm focus on broadband and mobile networks. We look forward to working with businesses in Dorset to achieve sustainable growth.

IG:

Let’s talk about education and young people. Graduate retention is a challenge for the county – with students leaving Dorset for other areas that they may see as more vibrant. This is obviously a part of the wider recruitment challenges for business but how do you think we can persuade those young people to stay and develop their careers in Dorset?

MP:

Ensuring young people make good decisions about their future careers is incredibly important to us. We work closely with our local schools and colleges to emphasise the importance of high-quality impartial advice for all young people. Last year I launched ‘Inspiring Dorset’ to help primary and secondary schools to encourage employers into their schools to talk about the world of work, as gender stereotypes and social background starts to influence children’s thinking 6

October 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

about their future during primary and secondary school. We are also working with the Careers & Enterprise Company and Dorset LEP to recruit volunteers from the world of business to strategically support local schools to create and deliver inspiring careers plans. Dorset Council has just signed up to be a Cornerstone Employer as part of the Dorset Careers Hub. We will work with our networks, the wider business community, the Dorset LEP and the Careers & Enterprise Company to ensure all young people in Dorset have the opportunities they need to be prepared and inspired for the world of work. We have also bid for funding to train careers staff in schools and colleges and our schools and education service ensures that there is a high-quality curriculum offer available.

GF:

We have many of the ingredients necessary to retain the talent that our three universities are generating – strong, growing and varied sectors offering attractive career paths. Clustered around the Port of Poole and Bournemouth International Airport is a rich engineering and advanced manufacturing sector, and we have the largest financial sector outside London, represented by global financial services companies. So that balance between providing our young people with the right skills, maintaining our fantastic environment and ensuring we have a vibrant and growing economy gives us our target and our challenge.

IG:

And we do of course face the ongoing discussion of the rural and urban environment with many seeing Dorset as two halves – how closely are you working together and where do you see the synergies?

MP:

The urban and rural areas of Dorset offer something for everyone, and many people cross between the two for both work and pleasure. With two new unitary authorities, rather than nine councils, it’s easier for Graham and I to meet on a regular basis. We share a Director of Public Health, we have a duty upon us to co-operate in developing our new local plans and in reality, we are both going through similar journeys to create our new organisations – so chatting about this can help….and he’s a decent bloke too! I also know that many of our teams talk on a regular basis to make sure that ideas and best practice is shared and used for the benefit of all Dorset residents and businesses.

GF:

It is fine to perceive Dorset as two halves. Each area thrives because of the other, not in spite of it. We have two strong unitary authorities and it is important that we continue to work together for the benefit of the whole county and reap the successes that this will bring. The urban and rural areas complement each other, and we will continue to work together to achieve the best outcomes, whilst also recognising the need to work with the wider partnerships across the south west and southern central England to maximise our benefits.

IG:

We’ve obviously been through local elections and both authorities have new Leaders and there have been changes in the political landscape. Are you seeing new priorities for both authorities coming through as a result of this?

GF:

Our administration is really clear about its priorities, with sustainability, wellbeing and investment at the heart of the developing policy agenda. /company/dorset-chamber/

We have already declared a climate emergency, but our administration very much sees that as the start of a developing programme to make a real difference, not just a declaration without meaning. A report will go to BCP Council in December setting out our plan to make BCP Council and our operations carbon neutral by 2030, which is a hugely ambitious target, alongside proposals to also achieve carbon neutrality across the three towns as well.

MP:

Cllr Spencer Flower is Leader for Dorset Council, leading a Conservative administration with a small majority. The councils is member led and Spencer’s approach is to work closely across party lines, involving councillors of all parties in creation of policy – working for Dorset, advocating for Dorset in the region, nationally and even internationally. As mentioned earlier, we are currently working closely with our Cabinet on developing the council’s five-year plan. Our five key priorities that we want to have a conversation with our communities (including business leaders) are: • • • • •

Economic growth Dorset’s unique environment Affordable housing Strong, healthy communities, and Staying safe and well

It’s also worth mentioning that Cllr Flower is very clear that his role is to advocate for Dorset, and he and other Cabinet members are quite prepared to lobby and challenge government where they feel this is needed. We are prepared to think big, and act local.

IG: MP:

And finally what is your message to businesses across Dorset?

We listened to what you wanted, one council to talk to about the services that you need to grow business and now we are creating this. We will think big and lobby government for the strategic resources we need for Dorset whilst also acting locally to deliver the services that our residents, communities and businesses need. We can support business by making sure Dorset is a great place to live, work and visit. We want to help in recruitment and retention of new people to support business growth. We’re keen to show we are open for business and are happy to have a conversation with businesses about their needs and aspirations – some things we may be able to deliver directly, other issues we may need to work in partnership with businesses locally – and we would welcome those opportunities. We want to change the way we think about ourselves and about how other people think of us. Dorset Council does not always know best, and we welcome ideas, suggestions and co-production. We want to open up partnership working so that the best services are delivered to the right people, in the right places and at the right time.

GF:

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is home to a new Unitary Council, with a thriving £10bn economy, 400,000 people, world class talent and a fantastic quality of life. It is one of the greenest urban places in the UK according to the LSH Vitality Index, and development investment since 2013 has reached £1bn. Our commitment is to take that success and to build on it to create vibrant communities with an outstanding quality of life, where everyone plays an active part, which just happens to be our proposed vision statement!

I

really enjoy being interactive with the business community and it’s enlightening to hear how things resonate with our chamber membership. We are an approachable, warm and proactive chamber and the more feedback we receive about what is really challenging you all out there, the more help we can be. It’s easy to get distracted by what Chambers of Commerce set out to achieve. On Wikipedia the definition of a chamber of commerce says its “goal is to further the interests of businesses” and “serve as representatives and spokesmen (yes I spotted it should have said spokespeople too!) of the business community.” I am really proud to be part of Dorset Chamber and the positive attitude that exists across the team, its council and board. There is a genuine passion to support its members and there is daily dialogue about how we can do more to add value and enable businesses in the county to grow and be successful. The chamber has upped the ante in terms of lobbying and policy. It is absolutely our remit to challenge those who are accountable for creating an environment, locally, regionally and nationally that enables our businesses – and those who work within them - to thrive. A letter was sent to Boris Johnson back in August from Ian our CEO on behalf of all of us across the membership to acknowledge his role as PM but also most importantly to stress the need for clarity in the Brexit situation and the importance of leaving the EU with a deal. I know that engagement has also been made with MPs on the subject and this will continue until a more stable situation has been determined. I think in light of the chaos we should be commended for our resilience here in Dorset. However, if things are tough please tell us and if the chamber can do anything to help we always will, or at least provide a signpost to someone who can. On the ground, I see businesses of all shapes and sizes here experimenting with new approaches and widening their perspectives. I recently went on a gift hunt for a member of my LLPR team’s birthday and decided to avoid the usual high street chains (whilst they need our support too). I headed for Westbourne and found myself in the beautiful arcade at ‘Attico’, an independent gift shop which makes real effort with its merchandising and customer service; all those traditional and basic retail ‘must haves’ which are just as critical now than ever.

Having grown up around a small retail business I recognise the challenges and charms of these businesses and its good to see more of us ‘shop local’. Frankly, more often than not, it’s a far more rewarding human experience. Getting back to basics, as we seem to be gravitating towards in so many ways, there is a distinct pleasure to be had from knowing that your purchases have made a direct contribution to a local livelihood and the immediate cogs have turned a little bit due to your choices. I was asked if I’d “found everything I needed today.” I responded positively with a “yes, more than I was planning for!” And a subsequent conversation led me to learn that they had taken a bold step to create a gallery space in the unit opposite. The first exhibition of work was by Michael Sole, a local seascape artist whose paintings I admire – I own a small piece myself. It is exactly what this area needs to showcase. I was pleased to see how a small, local retailer was going to the next level and providing the area with something important culturally. I have shouted loud since becoming president about how as a county we need to do more to create culturally stimulating events and activities, and promote harder the great things that are already happening (BOMO, Arts Festival by the Sea, Light up Poole, Sculpture by the Lakes amongst many others) - to address our skills shortage by attracting new talent, helping with wellbeing and stress in the workplace and frankly, just making it an even better place to live and work! My parting shot is if you aren’t already, try shopping locally more often…... trust me, those eggs taste better when they’re from the farm up the road! ‘Til next month, stay well.

The growth of AFC Business

A

FC Business is the free-tojoin business club run by AFC Bournemouth, which welcomes hundreds of businesses to a variety of events and functions throughout the season. There are now more than 1,800 members of AFC Business who enjoy a variety of benefits through their membership, not least of which is being associated with a Premier League club playing at the highest level. AFC Business was launched in 2009. The Cherries were in League 2, Eddie Howe had just been appointed as manager and average match attendances were around 5,000. It was originally set up to enable the football club to raise its profile in the business community. This it has achieved spectacularly successfully, with a good number of businesses having been part of the club for a decade. AFC Bournemouth Partnerships Manager Amy Marks said: “AFC Business has been at the very heart of everything we do commercially and we have come an awfully long way in 10 years.

“We are very much a community-minded club and our many business friends have stood beside us along this incredible journey. We thank everyone involved for their continued support.” AFC Business is continuing to grow this year and has staged two completely new events for members. In June, the rise of Bournemouth’s award-winning Conker Spirit was celebrated at the club’s first Gin Evening and the brand’s founder Rupert Holloway was guest speaker at the event in the Bubbles Champagne Lounge at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium In August, the club hosted a first Al Fresco evening coinciding with the penultimate preseason game against Italian giants Lazio. The event included networking, dining and drinks, hosted in Vitality Stadium’s Bubbles Champagne Lounge. Guests were treated to an executive match ticket and half-time refreshments.

AFC Business members can take advantage of the following benefits: • • • • • •

Elements of well-being

I

had a fantastic get-together recently with Ian Girling, the Dorest Chamber Chief Executive. We chatted about lots of different things including; business strategy, the upcoming awards ceremony and the opportunities and challenges that go hand in hand with setting up and running a workplace health and well-being program. Ian was really pleased to hear that the number of entrants had increased significantly this year. This increased interest and engagement with employee health and well-being is now common across all business sectors. But all is not rosy in the well-being garden. Programs are often unplanned with many organisations failing to create either, a

A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity definition or objective standards of well-being. It was really interesting to listen to Ian’s experiences and thoughts on strategic planning. He described how he had worked with many local companies that had found the right balance 12

between strategic and operational leadership and management. If we want our hard work and momentary investments to achieve results surely our well-being strategies should be implemented with the same care and attention as we invest into any other important business functions. I believe the first thing organisations should do is create a working definition of well-being and then break that down into tangible sections. The World health Organisation describe wellbeing as a key component of health: “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 2012). This definition helps but in my opinion it’s still a bit abstract. At Ouch we have adopted the IOSH 5 components of well-being, which are as follows 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Health Work Personal growth Values & principles Social & collective

These components are then broken down further to provide the basis for quantifiable workplace well-being standards. I just want to thank Ian for taking the time to come and visit Ouch, we really found the get-together beneficial and hope to put another date in the diary soon. Leadership lessons from Bananarama! Last summer, having booked to see Michael Buble in concert at Hyde Park with my wife for our anniversary, we discovered that one of the support acts was Bananarama. Who ended up being the highlight of the show since we missed Buble due to a torrential downpour and a toxic mix of alcohol and antibiotics on my wife’s part that led to our departing early! Bananarama opened with their 1982 hit ‘It ain’t what you do’ which reminded me of some leadership advice I’d received long before. The full lyric goes, ‘It ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it and that’s what gets results!’. How very true. This is usually the difference between effective and ineffective leaders; the difference between successful businesses and those that fizzle out. Because leading anything is going to involve interaction with people. And people are strange and complicated creatures whose moods and whims are constantly changing. Whether you succeed or fail will be down to people: customers… whether they buy; employees… whether they stay and follow; investors… whether they believe and commit. So the way you interact and present to these people is critical. You may have a great product but if you can’t communicate with your audience or motivate your team then your product will never see the light of day. It’s not what you do it’s the way that you do it. Simon Sinek developed this idea with his ‘Golden Circle’: What, How, Why. He suggests that “people don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it.” Most people can tell you what they do and they can tell you how they do it, but most don’t have clarity over WHY they do it. But communicating the WHY to your investors, employees and customers is what provides emotional wind and gives your business its soul. This speaks to the way you go about marketing your product and the way you go about leading your team. People centred or product centred. What’s your WHY? WHY do you do what you do? Are you doing what you do because you believe in it? Or is it just to get money and pay the bills? Is it just a job to you? If it’s just a job then you won’t stay the course. When a better paid job comes along you’ll take it. Which means you’re not committed to what you’re doing. And if you’re not committed you’ve already limited your potential for success, because success always requires commitment. Do your employees know WHY they’re doing what they’re doing? Do they believe in it? Have you communicated your WHY to them? Are they on board? Because if they’re not, if it’s just a job to them, then they too will jump ship when something better comes along. When your company or organisation lives and breathes your WHY, you give your customer more than just a product or service, you give them a motive, a reason to buy your product or service. Helping with over night success The team of 27 professionals at Ringwood based IT Software Solutions company, KFA Connect are expected to have a few sleepless nights according to Director, Richard Austin. This is due to the company’s policy to offer IT systems maintenance and upgrades at the time of day that would have the least impact on their client’s trading. This advantage has been one of the reasons why KFA Connect has expanded this year and seen their turnover reach £2.7m. “It’s common sense that scheduled deployments, in other words, the process of installing required changes to software, are made when there is the lowest amount of sales, trading and inconvenience to customers and the company’s own personnel. The majority of our key clients now request out of hours service for anything that will interrupt the

efficiency of their business.” Overnight deployments can usually be carried out from the comfort of the selected team members home without the need to stay at the Ringwood office until early morning. “With careful planning and mutual agreement there is no real excuse for any business to put off the introduction of new e-commerce related software or system upgrades to increase efficiency and improve customer experience,” said Richard. “Our new team members are always made aware of our open all hours policy but assured that we never have pyjama parties in the office, unless it’s for charity!”

BOFA launches new DentalPRO 150 Extraction unit BOFA International, global leaders in portable fume and dust extraction, has launched its most powerful unit yet for the dental industry - the DentalPRO 150 unit. Dental technicians face specific workplace safety challenges linked to dust generated through the milling, repairing and hand finishing of products. Materials such as zirconia, cobalt, nickel, beryllium, gold and plastic, are known to produce potentially hazardous airborne contaminants that can lodge in technicians’ lungs and lead to occupational respiratory diseases such as asthma. BOFA’s new DentalPRO 150 has a maximum airflow of 150 cubic metres per hour operating at a maximum pressure of 180 millibars and, as a result, provides an effective solution to remove particulates generated during hand finishing of dental implants. The unit also has a reduced footprint, being oblong in shape, and will sit easily under a desk or can be hung on the side of a work bench, enabling technicians to work safely and without restriction. David Case, Commercial Product Manager at BOFA, commented: “The new DentalPRO

150 is a high vacuum machine that helps ensure dental laboratories meet their health and safety obligations to technicians, while supporting productivity goals. It is the result of our commitment to continuous innovation in the dental sector.” The new unit is available worldwide and combines powerful performance with ease of use. It includes a filter status indicator for timely changeover. www.bofainternational.com

New school takes shape with steel A UK steel industry backed project to rebuild a hurricane-hit primary school is nearing completion in the Caribbean. (for localisation at distribution for different media) Dorset-based John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) is leading a consortium of UK businesses which have joined forces to help reconstruct the Enis Adams Primary School on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. They are Tata Steel, National Tube Stockholders, Joseph Ash Galvanizing, Euroclad Group Ltd, Ayrshire Metals Ltd, BAPP, Powell Gee & Co Ltd, Kestrel Liner Agencies and Meachers Global Logistics. REIDsteel commercial director Tim Cook has just returned from Tortola where he saw how work was progressing under main contractor Newton Construction Co Ltd. Tim said: “It was great to see the new school in person. “All of the steelwork has gone up and work is going well as it nears completion. The school

is being rebuilt to modern standards and requirements with disabled facilities, and an additional second floor. “As well as seven classrooms on the ground floor, it will have a science lab, IT Suite, library, large seminar room on the second floor plus a medical room. “The school will be much improved on the previous building and will create a real legacy for the future.” The school was completely destroyed when hurricanes Irma and Maria swept through Tortola in October 2017. Virgin Islands businessman Peter Haycraft, a longstanding client of REIDsteel with his former business Road Town Wholesale, has pledged his own money for the reconstruction. REIDsteel, based in Christchurch, Dorset, with 130 employees, designed and supplied steelwork, and rallied its suppliers to support the project too. Now they are to send keepsakes to Tortola for a time capsule to be buried at the school before it is

due to open to pupils in the Autumn. Hesketh Newton, managing director of Newton Construction Co Ltd, said: “The school is taking shape with every passing day and will be superb once finished.” Mr Haycraft said: “It is gratifying to see the Enis Adams school rise from the rubble as our community works to put the devastation of the hurricanes behind us.” REIDsteel designed the new school to withstand 185 mile per hour winds and earthquakes based on Unified Building Code Occupancy Category III and IV. All of its 26 buildings in the British Virgin Islands survived the hurricanes of 2017 with only superficial damage. Mr Cook saw firsthand how the company’s structures had stood strong while others collapsed around them during his recent visit. Others involved in the Enis Adams project are architect AEMC Architectural Services, Civil Engineer AEC Consulting Engineers Ltd, Electrical Barry’s Electrical Services, Reliable Plumbing, S & D Security, and the British Virgin Islands Ministry of Education and Culture. Tata Steel has helped with supply of floor decking and given Colorcoat ® pre-finished steel for roofing. Euroclad Group Ltd has supplied its metal roofing cladding products to help rebuild the school. Thirsk-based National Tube Stockholders has given steel tube and steel hollow sections, Joseph Ash Galvanizing has hot-dip galvanised the structural steelwork and Ayrshire Metals Ltd has given secondary steel cold rolled purlins Barnsley-based BAPP has supplied industrial fasteners and bolts, Powell Gee of Shrewsbury has supplied fixings for floor decking and the external cladding envelope. Kestrel Liner Agencies has helped with shipment and Meachers Global Logistics with shipping services. REIDsteel has the capacity to design, manufacture and supply entire steel buildings – including their cladding and glazing – anywhere in the UK, Europe and across the World. It has exported to more than 140 countries to date and celebrates its centenary this year.

NFU Mutual Wessex is delighted to be the headline sponsor for Ride the Trafalgar Way 2019

N

FU Mutual Wessex is delighted to be sponsoring ‘Ride the Trafalgar Way’, a 500k cycle ride due to take place on the 28th and 29th September. Ride the Trafalgar Way is one of the most historic long distance cycle rides in the UK. The route closely follows the one taken by Lieutenant John Richards Lapenotiere to carry news from Falmouth to London of Britain’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. While Lapenotiere’s journey took 37 hours using horses, Ride the Trafalgar Way cyclists must now complete the ride in under 34 hours on their own trusty steeds. The route starts in Falmouth and passes through Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Surrey before finishing in London. Participating cyclists will make a pit stop in Salisbury, close to NFU Mutual Wessex’s Salisbury office. This gives the local community a fantastic opportunity to watch the event and cheer participants on their way. The event is founded, delivered and managed Jim Bellinger, one the UK’s leading major sporting events consultants, and has been designed every step of the way with cyclists in mind.

Jim Bellinger, Event Director of Ride The Trafalgar Way said: “Delivering and safely managing an event of this distance and timescale is a logistical challenge. The support provided by NFU Mutual Wessex means we can safely deliver a fantastic experience to our riders, some of whom are riding to raise money for great charitable causes. We would like to thank them for coming on board and supporting Ride the Trafalgar Way in 2019.” Simon Hedges, Agent NFU Mutual Wessex, said: “We are delighted to support the RTTW this year, and are proud to enable such a worthy and historic event to take place that the whole community can enjoy. SG Financial secures Stewarts £573k in grant funding Dorset-based innovation and growth funding experts, SG Financial, have provided grant writing and bid management advice to D.Stewart & Son to enable the business to secure two grants worth a combined £573,000. Stewarts Garden Centres, the family firm whose history dates back eight generations to 1742, operates two garden centres and a nursery in Dorset and a further garden centre in Hampshire. Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has awarded a £297,000 grant to Stewarts Garden Centres towards a new highly productive £1.5 million agri-tech glasshouse at its Broomhill site, near Wimborne. The new 9,000 square metre glasshouse will revolutionise the business and enable it to compete more effectively against importers. The glasshouse will feature automated machinery for handling plants and computercontrolled heating and shading zones.

Stewarts will also join forces with Kingston Maurward College to offer exciting work placements for students to gain experience in agri-tech. There are also plans to run education tours and welcome school trips as well as introducing a volunteer scheme for horticultural enthusiasts. SG Financial also advised Stewarts to secure a further grant of £276,000 from Dorset Council’s Low Carbon Dorset fund towards the installation of low carbon technologies at its Broomhill and Christchurch garden centres. These technologies include a ground source heat pump, solar panels and LED lighting. SG Financial’s Managing Director Shaun Gomm said, “It has been a

pleasure to assist Martin Stewart and his team to secure both grants, which will allow the innovative Glasshouse project to be developed and decrease the Company’s carbon emissions. The investment will help to increase Dorset’s productivity and contribute towards lowering the county’s carbon emissions.” Commenting on his experience of working with SG Financial, Martin Stewart, Managing Director of Stewarts said, “We are honoured to have been awarded these grants, which will realise a long-held vision to construct a state-of-the-art, fully automated growing facility and move our business towards being carbon

neutral. We would like to thank Shaun for identifying and securing this enabling funding and would highly recommend SG Financial to companies looking to secure innovation and growth funding.” SG Financial was established by Shaun Gomm in 2018 and works with innovative and growing SME businesses throughout the UK. SG Financial assists companies to secure grants, loans and equity and also provides Project Management and Consultant Finance Director services.

Footprint’s avoided deforestation programme in South America. The carbon emissions from Good Oaks’ three other offices will be offset by investment in solar power in one of Carbon Footprint’s projects in the states of Tamil Nadu and Telangana in India. The project develops renewable energy generation plants based on Solar PV technology to deliver electricity to the grid. Dr. Wendy Buckley, Client Director at Carbon Footprint Ltd, said: “Good Oaks has taken a leading position by assessing the carbon impact of its business – even though there is no legislative requirement for them to do this. By offsetting unavoidable emissions, they are assuring that the service they deliver to their customers is sustainable and projects support communities both near and far.” The Good Oaks team used Carbon Footprint’s online carbon calculator to calculate the company’s carbon footprint, for the period 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. The calculation uses the 2018 metrics

developed by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for reporting GHG emissions.

Home care franchise's carbon neutral status Poole-based Good Oaks Home Care has become one of the first home care companies in the UK to become carbon neutral. The company has gained the Carbon Footprint Standard accreditation following an audit of its carbon emissions. Good Oaks worked with the team at Carbon Footprint to calculate its carbon emissions across all four of its offices based in Dorset, Hampshire, Reading and Mid Sussex. Carbon Footprint evaluated the emissions that Good Oaks recorded and identified recommendations for reducing these. Good Oaks chose to offset all unavoidable carbon emissions by investing in Carbon Footprint Ltd.’s carbon offset projects. Good Oaks’ Poole office, the company’s largest office with over 100 employees, was responsible for the majority of carbon emissions. These will be offset via a tree-planting scheme in the South West, which plants trees at schools and other bio-diversity sites. The planting will take place in the Autumn. The majority of the company’s emissions were generated by carers travelling by car to provide care at clients’ homes. The other significant source of emissions was electricity consumption across the four sites. Co-Founder of Good Oaks, Ben Ashton, said: “Becoming carbon neutral was an important investment for us to make. We didn’t want to wait for legislation to make this 22

compulsory for smaller businesses. It is essential that other home care companies across the UK follow our lead, to calculate, reduce and offset their carbon emissions. As far as we know, we’re the only home care provider to have this accreditation and this needs to change. “Due to the nature of the service we provide, helping support vulnerable people in their own homes, our carers currently need to use their cars to get between visits. Electric vehicles aren’t an affordable option yet and we needed to take action to reduce the impact of our carbon emissions now. Offsetting is just part of our long-term environmental strategy which will see us work hard to reduce our impact on the environment wherever we can. When our contract ends with our current energy supplier, we will also ensure our electricity is provided by 100% renewable energy.” Carbon Footprint’s tree-planting project ensures that all trees planted are native, broad leaf species that help to preserve the UK’s biodiversity. For every tree that is planted, Good Oaks’ investment will also save one tree from being cut down in the Brazilian Amazon via Carbon

A Carbon offset is a way to compensate for emissions by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere. Everyday actions consume energy and produce carbon emissions, such as driving, flying and heating buildings. Carbon offsetting is used to balance out these emissions by helping to pay for emission savings in other parts of the world. Planting trees removes carbon emissions when trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and wood by photosynthesis. www.goodoakshomecare.co.uk/ bournemouth/ @DorsetChamber

- ADVERTISERS ANNOUNCEMENT -

The History of Alderney Shipping By Bruno Kay-Mouat

Alderney Shipping turned 50 on 24th January 2019 Alderney Shipping turned 50 on 24 January 2019 Started by a team in 1969, which included Martine and Jon Kay-Mouat, Alderney Shipping has continued to be owned and run by Bruno KayMouat (their son). It is the longest-established load-on load-off (lolo) freight company in the Channel Islands, and the only local Bailiwick-based business that runs a ship between the UK and the Channel Islands. The company has operated the weekly interisland service between Guernsey and Alderney consistently for 50 years and the number of sailings that have been cancelled during this period can be counted on one hand. This high level of service reflects the pride the company has of its Alderneybased heritage. When other companies have operated to the island they have done this as an ‘add-on’ often with less suitable vessels but Alderney Shipping has always ensured that its vessels can call in to Braye Harbour as a priority.

32

October 2019 | Dorset Business Focus

Alderney Shipping’s vision for the future is to maintain a reliable and regular service to the island of Alderney in conjunction with its services to the other islands so as to maintain its viability. Some parties’ favour a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessel for the service but the company’s present view is that lo-lo is more suitable for this route. Continued investment in physical equipment as well as in administrative systems, processes and procedures ensures improved handling of freight and a further improved level of customer service. The company prides itself on the personal service it gives its customers and the accessibility to any member of our team. Over the years the company has owned a number of vessels and this has caused its own challenges and led to some unusual events. One that comes to mind was when the master of The Mungo rang the office to advise that there was a ‘minor’ situation whilst the ship was entering the port of Littlehampton but he didn’t think it would lead to much. The incident thankfully resulted in nobody

being hurt and only minor damage to the vessel. On the positive side the Alderney Shipping website has never had so many hits and when the picture made the front page of The Telegraph and various other publications! My mother once ended up buying a ship at auction in Cherbourg, which had been arrested for arms smuggling called The Ord! I still don’t know what the name means but I remember the mobilisation voyage being very exciting as I was about eight at the time. The whole family sailed on her first voyage from Cherbourg – a slightly different family outing. Having been dumped by a girlfriend some years ago, I found myself hanging off a rope ladder, painting a new name on the back of a ship, which the company had recently purchased in Greece. I clearly remember thinking that possibly this was not a good reason for buying a ship, although I do remember justifying the purchase to myself that the ship was cheap. The vessel subsequently incurred some extremely large repair bills – lesson learnt – no more ships to be purchased when dumped! At a time of wondering why I had not taken a legal career (possibly having just received a large legal bill), I asked my father, who was a lawyer, why he’d not encouraged me into the legal profession. He responded without any emotion that this was purely due to me being “too stupid.” The career in shipping therefore continued due to the fact that I worked for the owner and to all intents and purposes was the ‘unemployable son’. Things we have shipped over the 50 years have been weird and wonderful and have included: nose cones for nuclear submarines, llamas, people (both dead and alive), all kinds of cars (including Ferrari’s, Rolls Royces, Aston Martins), fire engines, fish, cows, chickens, donkeys, Buddhas (big and small), houses, sheds, a gorilla statue, a ‘fair’ amount of alcohol and cannons. We have worked with a variety of customers and organisations but feel that our most loyal customers are in Alderney. This point has been reinforced over the years when other operators have offered services to Alderney as an add-on to their main service. When Huelin Renouf started operations into Alderney, our very own Angus Macdonald made some badges for the Alderney Stevedores with “Bruno’s Gang” written on them. The loyalty stories we heard were humbling and in some instances very funny but not appropriate for print unfortunately. According to Richard Branson, a company is made by its staff, and he is quoted as saying, “If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.” This is true of Alderney Shipping where the company is made up of many interesting characters. We’d like to add, though, that we have learnt in our 50 years that a company is made up of its staff AND its customers. On behalf of the company we would like to thank you all, our customers and staff for your support over the past 50 years, through the good times but also through the more challenging times too. @DorsetChamber

Updated business travel advice in the case of a no deal Brexit, from Travel Counsellors for Business

The UK is due to leave the European Union (EU) on 31 October 2019. The political process is still ongoing, and at the time of writing, we don't yet know the final outcome, so the potential impacts are difficult to predict with any certainty.

H

owever, if you are a UK passport holder and due to travel after this date to an EU destination, there are some specific things for you to consider to reduce the possible impact that Brexit may have on your travel plans, particularly in the event of a no deal outcome.

Flights Airlines will be able to continue flights between UK and EU destinations until at least October 2020 regardless of what happens with Brexit over the next few months. This “unilateral contingency” legislation to allow flights to operate had originally been due to end in March 2020 but this has now been extended for a further six months. The extension of air traffic rights provides certainty to the airline industry and wider business.

Passports Check the date your passport expires! When travelling to the EU after 31 October 2019, the UK government recommends that you have six months left on your passport on the date of your arrival to an EU country but the six months remaining cannot include extra months that may have been added to your passport’s expiry date when you last renewed.

Driving Abroad In the event of a no deal outcome it is likely that UK travellers looking to drive in the EU on or after 31 October 2019 will

need to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) from the Post Office (£5.50), check carefully, you may need more than one for each country you intend to drive in. You’ll also need a Green Card to cover your insurance.

Health Cover In the event of a no-deal Brexit, UK registered European Health Insurance Cards may be affected. We always advise customers to hold appropriate travel insurance, whether they have an EHIC or not.

Visas The European Commission announced in November 2018 that, even in a no-deal scenario, UK travellers can still visit the EU without a visa.

Data Roaming and Call Charges Under EU rules, the cost of making calls, sending messages or using the internet on your phone in the EU is the same in the UK. If the UK leaves without a deal these rules will no longer apply. Check with your provider if unsure.

Disruption We advise you add some extra time to your journey for additional time at passport control. For help with your business travel plans, please call your Travel Counsellor for Business, Katharine Cleall on 01202 802166.

The top policy issues and actions for Dorset This month I have taken another three subjects from my report for Dorset Chamber to help keep you up-to-date on some key business issues at the national and local level. So, here we go: Brexit (Apologies but it’s not going away) Most of you will be relieved to know that I am going to say very little about Brexit in this update. The BCC has campaigned tirelessly to avoid a messy and disorderly Brexit but our politicians are not listening. Adam Marshall, Director General of the BCC says “Once again, businesses will have to try their best to prepare for an unclear future as the political process goes down to the wire.” Brexit is a complete mess, and with Parliament suspended we are now into the realms of pure speculation about what might happen next. This is bad for business and the economy – and possibly our British Constitution.

Key dates are: 14 October 2019 – Parliament returns after its suspension and Queen’s Speech due. 17/18 October 2019 – EU Summit due. 19 October 2019 – If we are still in a no-deal situation by this date a new law requires the Prime Minister to seek a further extension from the EU. 31 October 2019 – The UK’s flexible Brexit extension ends. In the event of a continuing no-deal situation the UK will crash out of the EU with no transition period. For specific business information see: • Prepare for EU Exit • Brexit Hub • Business Brexit Risk Register • Brexit Business Readiness Events (Sources: BBC, BCC, DCCI, & The Economist)

Proposed Takeover of Cobham plc Cobham plc shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a £4bn takeover bid by Advent International, an American privity equity group. Critics, including the Cobham family, former Cobham executives and one of our local MPs have opposed the takeover – concerns are based on the company being under-valued, potential job losses and national security grounds. In a surprise move as I write this the government has intervened today to investigate the deal. Cobham employs some 11,000 people mainly in the USA, UK and Europe. What this means for about 1,000 employees in Dorset in terms of jobs (Wimborne and Bournemouth Airport sites) and future investment, however, is unclear. Advent more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

International is alleged to have a predatory and ruthless cost-cutting reputation, particularly in its first year of ownership of a company. Equally, Cobham’s takeover is part of a much wider picture of UK companies being targeted for acquisition by overseas buyers as the pound weakens. In the last 3 months the total value of UK companies falling into overseas hands is more than £25bn. Besides Cobham, these companies include Entertainment One (owner of Peppa Pig), Greene King, Just Eat, Merlin Entertainments, and Inmarsat. Other companies considered at risk of a takeover include Morrisons, Whitbread and ITV. It should be evident that we do need an Industrial Strategy for Dorset and the country as a whole. (Sources: BBC, Reuters, Financial Times, Guardian, and Bournemouth Echo)

Local Infrastructure (Doesn’t sound exciting, I know but it does matter) Two local infrastructure issues have combined to make it very difficult for some businesses to carry out their day-to-day activities: Sandbanks Ferry In July the Bramble Bush Bay that crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour was taken out of service after its drive shaft broke. Work on the ferry, which links Swanage and Poole, is expected to last until the end of October. This means that instead of the 4 minute harbour crossing visitors, residents, and businesses face a 25-mile (40km) diversion. Residents and businesses, including Dorset Chamber, have complained about the prolonged loss of service and Studland Parish Council has said the ferry operator should be stripped of its licence to operate the service. This latest breakdown comes after the ferry was suspended for nearly 3 months last winter due to annual maintenance and then a hydraulic issue. Also, the ferry only ran on 2 days between 29 October and 28 January. It’s worth saying that according to the Parish Council the ferry licence does not specify any performance standards. Fairacres Group, which runs the ferry, said it had been “struggling” to hire a stand-in vessel. In December 2018 the Fairacres Group applied to increase the ferry tolls but the Secretary of State for Transport refused the application. Twin Sails Bridge In August BCP Council announced that Poole's Twin Sails bridge would be closed until "around midautumn" after it developed a technical fault. The bridge linking Poole and Hamworthy has been operating on only one of its two lifting rams since January after developing a fault with the other one. The remaining ram is now out of action and repairs cannot be completed until the autumn. Previously, an issue with an electronic sensor closed the bridge for a week in December, and prior

to that it shut for a month due to a grating noise. BCP Council has said a new pin was due to be fitted in the autumn to the first faulty ram and that new parts had been ordered for the other ram. Meanwhile, the bridge has been left open so that marine traffic, including RNLI vessels and Sunseeker boats, can pass through the channel. And here is another local infrastructure issue to watch out for too, if you use the A31.

A31 Overnight Road Closures A long stretch of the A31 dual carriageway will be closed overnight (between 9pm and 6am) from next month because contractors will be carrying out a range of works to the road. The work is set to begin on Monday 7 October and will continue for about 7 weeks. The closures are as follows: •

Overnight closure of the westbound carriageway of the A31 between the M27 Junction 2 (for Salisbury and Fawley) and Picket Post

Overnight closure of the eastbound carriageway of the A31 between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the M27 Junction 1 (for Cadnam)

Overnight closure of all side roads at the junctions of those stretches

Also, there will also be a 50mph speed limit in place on: •

The westbound carriageway of the A31 between a point 100m east of the entry sliproad at M27 Junction 1 and a point 200m east of the exit sliproad at Picket Post

The eastbound carriageway of the A31 between a point 2,000m east of the entry sliproad at Picket Post and a point 100m east of the entry sliproad at M27 Junction 1

All sliproads leading to and from those stretches

These measures will be put in place while contractors undertake installation of new emergency crossing points, carriageway works, highways maintenance works, and all other associated works. Traffic will be diverted using the A36 and the A338.

(Sources: BBC, Bournemouth Echo and Highways England)

Well, I think that’s more than enough for this edition. I wonder what I will be writing about next time! Ian Cambrook Pidela Consulting Ltd 35

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is providing funding to three new local projects The funds are being provided through the government’s Local Growth Fund which has aimed to bring together local, national and private sector funding to unlock key housing and employment sites, create more highly skilled jobs, and support economic growth. Lorna Carver, Dorset LEP Director, says: “I am excited to announce these three new projects which will increase our productivity and create future opportunities for Dorset businesses.” Up to £1 million will be allocated to BCP Council to fund the ‘5G Digital Testbed’ project. The venture aims to implement a world first in 5G

mobile deployment in a ‘real world’ environment. The economic benefit of developing and actioning a 5G/ Smart Place programme across Dorset is significant. Investors have forecast that between £50-100 million of technology investment could be deployed across Dorset in the next three years. Stewarts Garden Centre, Wimborne, will be awarded £297,000 to start work on an agri-tech plant production and educational facility. The ‘Stewarts Agri-Tech Glasshouse’ project will provide the garden centre in Broomhill with a growing facility which has varied heating zones, low carbon technology and a base for

horticultural education. It will enable the nursery to deliver growth, both in terms of productivity and employees, be competitive in the market and provide knowledge exchange with a variety of stakeholders such as Kingston Maurward College. Finally, receiving £250,000, Weymouth College will build and launch ‘The Centre of Excellence for Motor Vehicle Technology’. This is a transformational project aimed at future-proofing Weymouth College’s

advanced Motor Vehicle workshop space and develop hybrid and fully electric vehicle facilities. Jim Stewart, Dorset LEP Chair, concludes “The launch of these new projects show that Dorset LEP is ambitious and forward thinking. 5G, agriculture and automotive technology are exciting sectors which have the potential to improve Dorset’s economy and skills.” Contact the lep at www.dorsetlep.co.uk

TDSi promotes British exporting excellence

P

oole-based integrated security manufacturer TDSi is proudly supporting the UK Department for International Trade’s ‘Great’ initiative as an Export Champion, encouraging British businesses to think globally when it comes to tapping potentially lucrative markets. TDSi’s Managing Director, John Davies, who has personally been appointed as a South West Export Champion, commented, “TDSi has been actively exporting our products since 1984 and currently they make up 40% of our sales. Whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations with the EU there are huge opportunities in selling revered UK products and services around the globe, and we are keen to encourage and inspire other British businesses to embrace all available markets.” The ‘Great’ scheme strives to encourage customers from around the world to engage with and buy from UK producers and expert service providers, whilst offering advice and support (including legal, financial and networking assistance) for UK businesses looking to embrace these potential markets and customers. As an Export Champion, TDSi is offering advice and experience to support other businesses looking to expand their export reach. John continued, “In the past France and the EU have been our biggest export market, but Southeast Asia and the Middle East are due to eclipse their position this year. China is also a very important market for TDSi because despite being one of the great ‘workshops of the world’, savvy security more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

buyers there know British manufacturers like ourselves have a well-deserved reputation for offering innovation, quality and excellent value for money.” Exporting shapes TDSi as a business, as John explained, “It keeps us on our toes to deal with the competition and ensures we listen effectively to new customers and markets, adapting our products and services to maintain and establish relevance in each territory.” It also offers fresh opportunities aside from those in the domestic market, as John added, “Despite being an SME manufacturer/exporter, we can take on the big boys, competitors considerably larger than we are, and beat them. We offer specialised, top-quality security solutions and are highly responsive with great service delivery – which is why we are winning in these overseas markets.” TDSi has capitalised on these advantages on many impressive projects, including China Petroleum’s HQ in Beijing (where it beat a $20bn competitor); Shanghai Metro and other Metro systems in China; along with telecom and electricity companies in Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia. John concluded, “We are keen to share this experience and knowledge through schemes such as ‘Great’, helping other UK companies to embrace a diverse selection of potential markets and to help ensure the UK remains a powerful force in international trade and exports.” To learn more about TDSi’s products and services please visit www.tdsi.co.uk or telephone +44 (0)1202 723535. 39

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Who owns your brand? When John thinks of Cadbury, he thinks of entire slabs of chocolate consumed while watching Netflix. There’s red wine involved. It’s a happy feeling. When Jane thinks of Cadbury, she gets kinda annoyed, remembering the hypocrisy of their equality campaign while paying zero tax in the UK. Money she felt would go a hell of a lot further to eradicate discrimination than a novelty chocolate slab. (She’ll still eat one though if you’re offering.) It was only late in our agency journey, after years of relationships with brand managers and countless conversations around market share, USP’s and brand personality, (insert your chosen terminology if it makes you feel more comfortable) that we started to realise how little control a brand manager has on the brand itself. Or at least, how fragile that control is. Our brands (and yours) exists ‘out there’, in the wild. A nebulous, fickle, grey cloud of opinion and preconceived notion. This, dear brand manager, is your challenge should you accept it. Once we acknowledge that the brand is not owned by the founders, or the company, or god-forbid, the marketing team, but is instead owned by the public; once we let go of the notion that we can tell consumers what and who the brand is and what it should mean to them, only then can we start to look at positioning and pull the trigger on tactics, knowing the brand manager’s role is closer to that of a PR spin doctor. Too cynical? Maybe. But let’s consider this: Brand is that unfathomable collection of thoughts inside your consumer’s mind when your brand name is mentioned. It’s only really

more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

a series of associations that either reduces your brand’s product to less than a commodity, or more than a commodity. It’s in that difference, in that series of flashed memories, that brand equity lies. So our task is to try and influence those associations. Influence, not control, because control is impossible. (If only!) Once public perception of a branded product starts to slide into negative brand equity, we can see how difficult it is to control the narrative. Like turning a slow tanker around, the force (read: money) required to get back to positive brand equity is enormous and much more expensive than just keeping happy thoughts about your brand where they are. This money, sorry… force, will be spent on increasing awareness of the brand in the first instance, and brilliant creative in the second. The creative needs to tell a new story, one that is believable and one that will stick among the jumble of images and words in the consumer’s brain, hopefully drowning out previous negative stories. We can therefore at best, hope to only influence the narrative for the better. This is, of course, true for us as creative agencies too. How do we compare to the generic equivalent of ourselves? Are we adding anything at all that gives us our brand equity? How are we aiding marketeers in shaping their brands' perception? What are people out there saying about us? So here we are, spin doctors. Despite the negative connotations of the term, we’re

not proposing brand managers ‘bend’ the truth around our products and brands to tell a fictitious story. Merely pointing out that our campaigns and activations pull only faintly at strings that in turn create thoughts and memories inside John and Jane’s brain about our brand. All the while, your competition is doing the same, fighting for space in John and Jane’s mind and fighting for the positive ascendancy against yours. Still picking on John and Jane… they’ve become disillusioned with our campaigns and our slogans and our ‘purpose’ and our meerkats and our ‘we’re-a-bankbut-also-your-friend’ stories. The solution? Let your brand be what it is, nothing more and nothing less, and tell that story. Amplify it. Spin doctor the hell out of it if you must, while knowing you can’t entirely control the Chinese whispers. If the story isn’t that compelling, find a new story, but one that happens to be true because nothing will aggravate John and Jane more than a made-up story about stuff they buy. Your brand equity will slide into a bucket and it will cost you more money in the long run. So, a brand manager’s role is to influence John and Jane’s association of their brand and if all goes well, for those two chocolate lovers to agree on what those associations are. It’s that easy, and it’s that hard. Anton Vann Director, Creative Coup www.creativecoup.co.uk

Innovative Bournemouth hotel has recycling ‘in the bag’ Bournemouth’s Marsham Court Hotel has increased its monthly recycling by three tonnes on last year, thanks to the introduction of a simple jute bag.

T

he family-run hotel in Russell Cotes Road installed a reusable recycling bag in all of its 95 guest rooms in June after observing a growing number of guests dropping their recycling into collection bins in reception. Marsham Court MD Rosie Radwell said: “As a business we have been working hard to get the amount of waste we send to landfill to a minimum and our guests have shown us that they are also keen to do their bit. “When we introduced recycling bins in our reception area last year we found people were actively bringing their recycling to us. So we added additional recycling bins to all floors. “We have now taken this to another level by producing a jute recycling sack for each room which enables us to collect cardboard, paper and plastic on a daily basis. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

“We recycled 86.08 per cent (nine tonnes) of our waste in July 2019, compared to 73 per cent (six tonnes) in the same period last year and we hope this figure will continue to grow.” The average UK hotel guest generates about 1kg (2lb) of waste per night, more than half of it in paper, plastic and cardboard. Marsham Court guests simply hang their recycling bags on their doors each morning for collection. They are also provided with the hotel’s recycling statistics by Bournemouth-based Waste Management Facilities, in a monthly e-shot. Environmentally damaging soap waste is also being expunged by the Marsham Court thanks to a partnership with ethical brand CLARITY & Co. As an alternative to miniature plastic bottles the hotel provides refillable dispensers of CLARITY & Co’s Juniper & Seaweed shampoo & bodywash,

which is produced by blind and disadvantaged workers, in all its guest bedrooms. CLARITY & Co’s unwrapped naked soap bars have also recently been introduced, along with stickers explaining how the enterprise is tackling disability under-employment in the UK. Rosie continued: “Tiny shampoo bottles might seem luxurious, but according to cleanconscience.org.uk, a shocking 200 million soap and shower gel miniatures are dumped from UK hotels into landfill each year. “All our guests are offered the chance to use the CLARITY products in return for a £1 charge on their bill, which is reinvested straight back into the charity. “The Marsham Court is incredibly proud to be the first three-star hotel in the country to use these Clarity & Co products and we hope other hospitality providers will now follow suit.” www.marshamcourthotel.co.uk 43

Get your marketing proposition right Okay first things first, we see a lot of different businesses in a year at Fireworx. Some big global corporates, some small start-ups and some SME’s. Each one has a different creative, marketing or digital need. We’ve had clients who needed help in creating a new global web-platform to help investors find some of the world’s most awesome opportunities, helped the NHS recruit more nurses, and created a new look visual identify for a solicitors. And of course, given its 2019, digital plays a huge part in almost all customer communications one way or another. It simply can’t be avoided, be it; Website Development, UX, Google analytics insight, Social Media Management, Content, PPC, SEO and don’t get me started on Chat Bots, or Voice Search! Here’s the thing though, these are part of the core services we provide here. Let’s call it a toolkit we deploy to help clients communicate to customers. But that’s all they are… tools. They’re not the starting point for us, or even the end of the journey. For us more fundamentally it all has to start with a client’s proposition, because whatever we deliver no matter how good it is, how good the process is, or how slick the digital experience, it will not deliver the results they want if the proposition isn’t right. Why? Well, it’s what we call the ‘nuts and bolts’ sell. It pretty much applies to most clients we see, but to expand the analogy a little this is how it typically goes; Client: “Hi, we sell nuts and bolts and need a… <marketing or digital tool>” Fireworx: “Great. Tell me a little more about your nuts and bolts. Who’s the customer that might buy these? Where are they based? What does the market look like already? How do your competitors sell theirs? And what, if anything, makes yours any better? This leads us to a well-worn question, but one that the deluge of new age, futurist, digital agencies get wrong more often than not. What is the ‘value proposition?’. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Now at this point the conversation typically leads to a number of features or perceived benefits which in fact have no real end benefit to the customer they are looking to serve. “We sell nuts and bolts in an easy to hold plastic bag” You get the gist… So what do we mean by the ‘value proposition’? Well, the dictionary definition is as follows: A business or marketing statement that summarises why a consumer should buy a product or use a service. This statement should convince a potential consumer that one particular product or service will add more value or better solve a problem than other similar offerings. And it’s not just some dictionary definition for a marketing term that holds no real traction in the world. As a well-known British billionaire said, “No matter what industry you are in you should be able to boil down what you deliver into a value proposition ordinary people can understand and respond to.” Despite this, it may not come as a surprise to you that most businesses don’t have a value proposition, or to know that many brands do okay without one either. This is what we call the, ‘attention grabber’. You just throw enough creative and money at it and hope that it works. You’ll have likely seen these in the form of advertising campaigns for comparison sites such as Go Compare, Money Supermarket and Compare the Market. How do they add value or better solve a problem? Simply put, they don’t. They rely on advertisers to create a personality that attracts and reminds people, but there is no real substance behind the ‘value they offer that’s better’. At Fireworx we specialise in helping brands define their ‘value proposition’ FIRST, before time is spent creating the digital tools to communicate with their customers. We focus on disrupting established or stale markets by creating ‘value’ for a brand which will complement the award-winning creative and digital services we also provide. It’s not easy and it can be challenging, but that’s why clients challenge us.

So, before you brief your next marketing project here are our tips to consider and clarify your value proposition: •

Spend time defining your customer and their habits – profiling has never been more important

Focus on one of four core needs and position yourself around one of them: value, quality, need or aspiration.

Think about how you articulate your proposition currently… It should be the same for a potential new client, to friends and to colleagues.

Does it tell someone, what you do, how you do it and how you do it better?

Remember, it’s not about being perceived as different, it’s about being better in some way!

If you’d like to see the power of delivering a digital solution that is backed by a meaningful proposition, then maybe it’s time to #challengeFWX. To find out how we do things better and to discover more about the value we can provide contact Fireworx call: 01202 559559 or go online: www.fwx.co.uk

Family law specialist, Andrew Mercer, has made a splash on the south coast - with a special fundraising attempt for charity, Aspire. Andrew, from Trethowans, joined a relay team to swim the English Channel. “Aspire does vital work supporting those who have had the misfortune to suffer a spinal cord injury,” said Andrew. “The charity enables people to get in with their home and work lives - as well as be able to enjoy recreation and sport. “Along with the rest of the relay team, I was determined to raise as much money as possible, in aid of this very worthy cause. Training was full on - in both sea and lake. We endured a real mixture of conditions - from 22 degree luxury at Ellingham Lake to the near on impossible swell and rollers at Sandbanks. “As a team we completed a very hard training programme, and the only thing that could possibly have stopped us was the weather. Luckily, the elements were relatively kind to us, and we came through. “I’d like to say a massive thank you to all who have already sponsored us. It really is much appreciated. This was an incredible challenge for all concerned, and we’re thrilled to have reached the French coast fully intact. Sadly, those who suffer spinal cord

injuries are not so lucky. Anyone who would still like to donate can do so by visiting our JustGiving page.” Aspire is national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury. Such injuries can happen to anyone at any time - and nobody is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure. Andrew’s challenge is part of the Aspire Channel Swim 2019. A challenge requiring participants to raise money by swimming the 22 mile distance between Britain and France. A mountain to climb Dorset Chamber member Joel Nurser challenges himself to raise £1 per metre climbed all the way to Everest base camp. Raising funds for Poole branch of Marie Curie charity in memory of his mum. Now that’s a tall feat. “How did I get here?” is exactly what Joel Nurser from Lytchett Matravers, will be ruminating when the world’s most legendary mountain stares down at him in November 2019. Until then, Joel is facing the tall feat of getting mentally and physically fit and raising a mountain of money too – his personal challenge is to raise £1 per metre climbed. By definition, ‘a tall feat’ is an extraordinary act or achievement, displaying boldness, skill; a noteworthy accomplishment of great courage, skill, or imagination. Joel Nurser, Operations Director at Poole based Composite Profiles UK, has set himself the very tall feat of climbing the 5,380 metres to Everest Base Camp, whilst also attempting to summit neighbouring peak, Kala Patthar, sitting 263m higher at 5,643m. His inspiration, his Mum Sue Nurser, who sadly passed away from Pancreatic Cancer aged just 59yrs old. Poignantly, Sue served her local community first in a building society and latterly for many years as receptionist at Longfleet House Doctors Surgery. Her parting advice, “LIVE

YOUR LIFE! do not be afraid to do the things you wish you could do, life is too short.” Joel will start his epic challenge on 3rd November 2019 when he flies into Tenzing–Hillary Lukla Airport in Nepal, notorious for being one of the world’s most dangerous airports due to its 9000ft altitude and seriously short runway just 527m. Lukla Airport was built in 1964 under the supervision of Edmund Hillary who bought the land from local Sherpas. When attempting to make the 20mins transfer to Lukla Airport, it’s not uncommon for planes to be grounded at Manthali Airport after passengers have boarded due to sudden weather changes in Lukla just a few miles away. Joel’s not phased though, “In all honesty, none of the dangerous things I have read about my trip really phase me. If I crash and die, well it’s out of my control so there’s nothing I can do about it. That’s really how I look at it. Maybe that’s my Mum’s inner voice telling me to live my life to the full. If we didn’t do things for the fear of it, we would live much more boring lives. I am looking forward to the views!” In 2016, Joel raised £5,180 for Poole branch of Marie Curie charity by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with Action Challenge. Joel aims to add a further £5,380 - the height in metres of Everest Base Camp

- to raise a total of £10,560. Follow Joel’s journey from Poole to Kathmandu in a week-by-week Q&A www.compositeuk.com/ everest You never know, it might stir something in you to go find your own adventure. In memory of so many of our loved ones, remember to live your life to the full. Marie Curie provide local care and support for people living with a terminal illness. Help Joel raise the equivalent of £1 per metre. After all, what else can you buy for the same price as a piece of cloth, pint of milk or loaf of bread – life enhancing cancer care. The partnership sees SSEN join forces with SafeWise - which has learning villages in Bournemouth and Weymouth - to raise awareness of child safety issues around electricity substations, associated power lines and roadworks. Using Be the Difference days, which enables SSEN staff to take time away from their day jobs to volunteer with local charities and good causes, SSEN colleagues installed a decommissioned electricity substation and overhead power lines at SafeWise Weymouth

SafeWise Chief Executive Rob Hattersley said: “We’re excited to welcome SSEN as a new silver SafeWise partner and would like to thank them for their support, which will help SafeWise charity continue its essential skills for life education. "The new substation and power lines at SafeWise Weymouth is a fantastic new safety scenario for visitors to experience and learn from.” SSEN experts will also help SafeWise develop content for new programmes for older people, home leavers, school children, families and other visitors. The new partnership also aims to increase awareness of additional SSEN community services including a Priority Services Register, free-call 105 emergency number and Power Track app that keeps customers fully up-to-date during power cuts while enabling them to report issues. the potential dangers that power supplies can bring when not used responsibly or with proper care. “Being able to use Be the Difference days to build the overhead power lines and substation from decommissioned equipment means that we can bring safety scenarios to life that might otherwise be difficult to envisage. Now, visitors to SafeWise can easily visualise what can happen when people fail to act safely. “This newly installed display builds a greater understanding for younger visitors, and while they’re learning how to stay safe we’re able to speak to their parents or carers about how we can help with the additional free services we provide to help people of all ages feel less vulnerable during a power cut.”

n the age of the SUV many believe the Estate car is a thing of the past. Toyota are trying to convince you otherwise with the new Corolla Touring Sports Self Charging Hybrid Auto. The car I tested is fitted with a 1.8-litre hybrid engine offering a relatively modest 120bhp that should deliver 70+ MPG in mixed driving the manufactures say. A 2.0 engine is also available if you are looking for a more spirited drive. For company drivers the all-important figure of 75g C02 per km makes this an excellent option for any driver looking to save on tax and employers who want to cut their fuel bills. If you have not enjoyed a Self-Charging Hybrid before, you simply treat it like a regular petrol car and it’ll top up its battery automatically when it has energy to spare. It then decides when to use the electric motor improving economy or increasing performance. The result is economy that rivals diesel cars of old and a feeling that you are helping the environment. it’s the first time I have driven an estate, or tourer as they call the Corolla for many years. The car felt light and nimble and I achieved 61 MPG in mixed

driving. Inside it’s typical Toyota, you are not short of electronic assistance including Intelligent Park Assist which is excellent. The build quality is very good with soft plastics and the interior is very well laid out. When it comes to the load area the seats can be folded fully flat which is a real benefit. Total load space is 1606 litres and although the tourers sloping rear opening restricts access for large items, the space will be sufficient for most users. When it comes to looks, it’s rather forgettable, but that’s not the point. Toyota has clearly gone for practicality over style which is understandable with a car like this. I’m personally not a fan of the CVT auto as the car revs loudly when you put your foot down accelerating. Toyota Hybrids are not new and have been chosen by over 12 million drivers around the world so, if you need a smooth car that is economical, has good load capacity and will be reliable you could do worse than the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Self Charging Hybrid Auto. MC Plan are fully insured! “DESPITE recent concerns and rumours across the insurance and construction markets, professional indemnity insurance is still being provided,” says Mark Cook from MC Plan and Site Services.

T

he last 12 months have seen a significant deterioration of the UK professional indemnity (PI) insurance market with a large number of insurers withdrawing and others seeking to reduce the amount of business they write with the knock-on effect seeing premiums increasing, significantly for some professions – including Approved Inspectors - and policy coverage being reduced. So what has been the cause of such a rapid and significant change? “One factor commonly held as a major reason is the Grenfell tragedy of 2017 as both this and the costs in making mid and high-rise buildings around the UK less vulnerable to fire will cost the insurance industry significant sums. However, the reality is that this is only a small part of the equation” says Gary Boome, Director of BM Property Insurance. “Lloyds of London undertook a review of the insurance market in 2018 and this showed PI insurance generally to be the second worst performing area; added to Grenfell, a number of extremely large global PI losses and natural catastrophes detrimentally affecting underlying reinsurance markets, most insurers were left with an ultimatum to either develop a business plan that would return their PI business to profitability or they would no longer be allowed to provide PI. This led to a number of insurers withdrawing immediately, with those left having to continue with a very different strategy of sustainable pricing and disciplined underwriting” he added. So what does this now mean for professional firms who need PI to trade? There have already been - and will be more - firms who are forced to close or lose contracts because they cannot secure the right PI cover or any at all.

In the AI arena, only three insurers are approved by the Government: • NHBC – who only underwrite NHBC instructions, so this cover is not available to other AIs. • Which leaves only; • Howdens, who earlier this year confirmed their underwriter was pulling out of the market, leaving them unable to offer these policies anymore. • Griffiths and Armour are now the ONLY insurers, but RSA told them in the spring that they would not be taking on any new risk, ie. any clients coming across from Howdens. They won’t insure anything more onerous than the ACAI standard form of appointment, nor will they cover anything with cladding over 18 metres high as this is considered too high risk. Firms have been advised to start their renewal process earlier than ever and be prepared to provide greater detail about their business and how they manage and mitigate risk. The more proactively they can do this, the more favourably they will be perceived by PI insurers. Mark Cook, MD of MC Plan said: “Mindful of the problems other firms were facing, MC Plan and Site Services started our renewal process four months before renewal. Other firms have not been so successful and the LABC have been waiting in the wings for this to happen by circling like vultures, waiting to swoop in the event the AI doesn’t receive insurance, or the premium is too high for them. The Local Authority will then demand the work back from the AIs, saying they can’t then continue with the work as they’re uninsured, which is crazy as the LABC are also uninsured. “Over the past few months, with the scaremongering that’s been going on, we have had

/company/dorset-chamber/

to answer numerous questions from our insurers when looking to renew” Mark said. “Questions that would not have been asked normally - which I can only attribute to the rumours and untruths that are being circulated in our industry. We have had confirmation recently from a building control surveyor employed by the LABC that they have been instructed to use the insurance situation associated with AIs as a marketing ploy to win work back’. “In truth, as an independent AI company we have far more hoops to jump through than LABC; we are audited by the CICAIR (Construction Industry Council Approved Inspector Register) on a regular basis to ensure that we stay compliant with the Approved Inspectors regulations unlike the LABC building control departments. In terms of knowledge, experience and training are concerned, I have not only received - but also have delivered far more training to my own staff since leaving the LABC than during the 15 years that I was working for them. All my assistants are either on, or have been on HNC Construction Management courses, or studied NVQ level 6 courses in Construction Management. “MC Plan and Site Services have to be fully insured to practise the building control service, as opposed to the LABC who don’t carry any insurance and therefore are not culpable for negligence, I find it difficult to understand why anyone would want to engage with an organisation that provides no protection to either the developer or the householder when, on the odd occasion, things may go wrong. “It’s been a challenging time for us in the office, with all the extra work created to get our insurance cover passed, but we are delighted with the outcome and are truly grateful to our insurers for having as much confidence is us as we do! Now, let’s get on with the business in hand…..” Mark added. MC Plan & Site Services Ltd is a fully insured, award winning Independent Corporate Approved Inspector, licensed and regulated by the Construction Industry Council (“CIC”) to carry out building control throughout England and Wales.

Four ways to improve website page speed from Creditplus Having a fast website is crucial to business. Not only do seconds count when converting visitors to customers, but your position on Google is influenced by how quickly parts of the page load. A recent study found even a one-second delay in loading a page could result in a 7% decrease in conversion. So, if page speed is so important, how do you know if your website is good or what you need to improve? Google, in an effort to speed up the web and improve customer experience, offers a simple tool called PageSpeed Insights. After running the test, Google will suggest areas of improvement – from image compression to minimising code – and present a score out of 100 for both desktop and mobile versions. Since 2018, Google only uses mobile speed to decide on rankings, however, traffic may still visit your website from desktop so it’s worth designing for both devices. In Creditplus’ pursuit to provide the best experience to car buyers, the FrontEnd Developers have shortlisted the four most effective ways to increase page speed. Compression Compression has the potential to have the largest impact on page speed, as on average images make up a total of 65% of a websites weight. When a visitor loads your website, files and images are delivered by the server – meaning they should be as small as possible. Luckily, there are multiple ways to compress an image. Firstly, choose the best file format for the image. Typically, PNG works well for graphics, whilst JPEG is better for photographs. Secondly, make use of loseless and lossy compression. • Loseless compression allows original data to be perfectly recreated in a more compressed version. So, this will not affect the quality of an image, but will reduce its size • Lossy compression will compress a file while losing some quality or information. This usually aims to take advantage of information we can’t see. For example, JPEG compresses sections of an image which are slightly different colours by making them all the same colour and therefore only storing that single value. When done to the extreme this is clearly visible, but on a small scale this is difficult to see and dramatically reduces the size of an image more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Code such as JavaScript and CSS can be minified, where all unnecessary whitespace is removed, which can reduce the file size. In addition, HTTP and text files can be compressed with GZIP. GZIP Normally a browser requests a file, and when the server receives the request it sends the file back. GZIP compresses the file before the server sends it, much like sending a zip file by email. GZIP can be used to compress almost all files, although it works best on HTML and CSS files due to the large amounts of whitespace and repetitive text. Render Blocking Files like JavaScript and CSS can delay the content on page from loading – also known as the ‘first paint’. PageSpeed Insights looks at two versions of ‘first paint’. • First Contentful Paint: Marks the time when the first text or image is loaded. The first bit of content, meaning the first indication that the page is actually loading anything. • When a page loads, we want to display the first text or image of a page as soon as possible. However, when a page loads it will firstly download any ‘critical’ stylesheets or JavaScript files which prevents the first object of the page being painted. • What we can do is ‘defer’ stylesheets and JavaScript. This means telling the browser to deal with these files last. Allowing some content to be painted earlier, or prior to loading these sheets. • This may not be completely styled if we defer stylesheets, but this is fine, we are only looking for the first bit of content, it does not have to be fully styled. • First Meaningful Paint: Measures when the primary content of a page is visible. • This measures the amount of time it takes for the first ‘page’ of content above the fold to load. We can decrease the amount of time it takes for the first set of content to load by delivering important styling or JavaScript inline. This allows the page to render this first, before other stylesheets or script. HTTP Requests The number of requests a website needs to make when loading a page will have an effect on the loading speed. Every individual stylesheet and JavaScript file will require another request, each one increasing the load time. • The simplest way to tackle this by having all core styles in one file, and all core JavaScript in one file. This allows the browser to make one request for CSS and one request for JavaScript. After optimising your web pages using these four steps, the speed of your website should increase dramatically, which could result in improved conversion or visitors spending more time on your website. Ultimately, these speed increases will be recognised by Google and, among other factors, increase your position on search results. Embrace the change send your work force home says Glyn Hardy from Hardy Recruitment Not long ago, working remotely every once in a while, was a nice job perk. If the weather was bad or an employee had a personal engagement, a reasonable manager would allow them to handle their duties at home.

B

ut times have changed and we’re now in the midst of a whole new “remote work” era. With technological advancements, it’s now easier than ever for employees to be productive anywhere they can get a solid internet connection. Instead of getting an office and filling the desks with local workers, more and more companies are hiring employees from around the globe and allowing them to work where they want. When you think about it, a typical office is full of distractions. There’s so much energy that it’s often difficult to focus on the task at hand. But when someone works at home, they can get comfortable and zero-in on what they need to get done. As with any major change, remote working has its detractors. Plenty of people claim a centralized workplace is needed to ensure collaboration and maximum production. Despite the resistance, hiring remote workers is going to become far more common. According to Upwork’s Future Workforce Report, 38 percent of hiring managers predict their staff will be predominately remote in the next decade. Additionally, the World Economic Forum referred to remote work as, “one of the biggest drivers of transformation of business models.” Embracing new ideas can be tough, especially one as drastic as letting employees work from home every day. In this article, we’ll explore the advantages of hiring a remote staff. Reduced overhead staffing costs With the death of the Zero hour contracts, (as of March 2019) employers find themselves no longer able to hold on to that pool of good staff for the seasonal or occasional sudden uptrend in business, requiring extra hands on deck yet step them down when not required. Pension contributions need to be payed, holiday & sick pay, plus a consistent rate of hours/salary regardless of your current business situation. Therefore, any situation that can swing it financially back in your favour should be welcome. HardyRecruitment suggests considering temp or remote temp staff to negate all these issues in one easy move. Reduced office costs It has always been pricey to have an office in major business hubs, so why not forgo the expense altogether and evolve into a remote company? Your employees will also benefit since they won’t 52

have to pay exorbitant rent to live in a city, plus travel expense getting to and from work coupled together with sitting in rush hour traffic at both ends of the day. You’re not just handing back more money to your employees; you’re giving them something far more valuable... time with their families, time for their hobbies & passions. You’re providing employment and quality of life balance. A limitless talent pool Certain industries are concentrated to a handful of cities because they go where the talent lives. The tech industry is a prime example of this. Even though Silicon Valley is synonymous with high labour and office costs, tech start-ups have to consider setting up shop there to meet their hiring needs. Going remote gives organisations access to an entire world of possible employees, increasing the likelihood of making an excellent hire. Instead of settling on a candidate who simply meets the job requirements, you can find someone who shares your company’s values and will go above and beyond if hired. A geographically distributed workforce also leads to employee diversity. Many organizations struggle with diversity, but it comes naturally for remote teams. And having a group of employees who come from varying backgrounds results in truly great ideas. Increased productivity Remote work naysayers claim employees can slack off in the privacy of their own homes. However, a recent study by HardyRecruitment (Remote office staff specialists) shows employees who work remotely 60 to 80 percent of the time strongly agree they make more progress in their workday away from the workplace. When you think about it, a typical office is full of distractions. There’s so much energy that it’s often difficult to focus on the task at hand. But when someone works at home, they can get comfortable and zero-in on what they need to get done. Remote policies that go as far as to allow employees to work on their own schedules also promote productivity. Some people prefer to get after it in the morning and others find their motivation at night. Simply having the option to take a break in the middle of the day lets an employee step away to recharge, instead of struggling to push through a 9-to-5 workday. /company/dorset-chamber/

Increased employee happiness and retention It should come as no surprise that people love working remotely. And happy employees stay at their jobs for a long time. Here are a few of the many perks remote working offers: • Go wherever you want – Imagine being able to move anywhere in the world and having a job when you got there. • More time with the people who matter – Working remotely allows parents to spend more time with their kids and people to move closer to their family and friends. • Improved quality of life – Being able to choose where you live is a key to happiness. City life is stressful for some and they would prefer to live by the beach or in the middle of nowhere. But others enjoy all the activity an urban area offers. • Save time and money – Commuting isn’t just costly. It also sucks time and energy out of people before they even get to the office. But when you work at home, you can start as soon as you wake up. Remote working not only removes many of the burdens that come with a traditional profession. It also shows the organization values its people and trusts them to do great work wherever they happen to be located. How to evolve into a remote company It really is easier today than it ever has been. With the growing rate of demand, companies are popping up at a steady rate to meet the requirements for supplying remote staff. Getting a seasoned specialist on board like HardyRecruitment to deliver expert advice and service will leave you wondering why you haven’t done it sooner. Allowing you to run your business without unnecessary issues to worry about like; staff pensions/holidays/sickness/office squabbles/ bad apples & difficult personalities.

No one can predict the future, but many people believe remote workforces are an inevitability. Your organization can experience these advantages and more if it embraces the change sooner than later. www.hardyrecruitment.com or 01202 232 520
