DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME
It’s a new decade! Welcome to our January edition of Dorset Business Focus. I hope you and your families had a wonderful, relaxing and peaceful Christmas and are facing the new year with optimism and energy! December 12th 2019 saw the election of the Conservatives with 365 seats, comfortably over the 326 seats required for a majority and very comfortably ahead of Labour with 203 seats, having lost 59 seats from their previous 262 seats secured in the 2017 election. For many, this election was all about Brexit. The Conservatives presented their Brexit position as leave at the end of January. Labour’s noncommittal approach was muddied and unclear and the Lib Dem’s pledged to revoke Article 50 and stop Brexit. I think it’s fair to say that whether people wanted to leave or remain, so many are frustrated with Brexit and they just want it done. The prospect of further delays or another referendum or indeed revoking Article 50 after 3 and half years of negotiation was not an appealing option for many. There has been tremendous frustration in the business community with the delays, political manoeuvring and the complexities that came with a hung Parliament after Theresa May lost her majority in 2017. Whatever the colour your politics may be, we now face the future with a Government that has a clear sense of direction regarding Brexit and the mandate to move
forward. Many in the business community will have breathed a sigh of relief at the result. Looking to the future, Dorset Chamber will be there to support our members across Dorset and the wider business community as we exit the EU. Whilst there will be challenges ahead, there will also be opportunities, and we will be on hand to help tackle these challenges but also maximise opportunities. We will be doing this through regular communications, help on our website with our Brexit guides, workshops, events and of course our Brexit Support Service support by BCP and Dorset Councils. We also play a critical role in connecting business people across Dorset and if you think we may be able to help you - don’t hesitate to get in touch. As we begin 2020, it’s time to look forward with a positivity and optimism and look for the opportunities ahead. #GetBusinessDone

FLY BOURNEMOUTH: Stephen Gill, Managing Director, Bournemouth Airport, owned and operated by Regional & City Airports.
Championing economic growth at Bournemouth Airport Bournemouth Airport and its surroundings is a key regional employment site in Dorset and west Hampshire, with around 4,000 workers. With its international airport facilities and highly successful business park, the airport has gone from strength to strength since it was acquired by Rigby Group plc two years ago last month (December). Last year (2019) the airport took over ground handling services from an external operator; owned and operated by Regional & City Airports (RCA), the airport now provides its own handling services including passenger, ramp, aircraft cleaning, dispatch and de-icing. Around 60 full-time posts were transferred from the previous licence holder; no jobs were lost. Stephen Gill, Bournemouth Airport’s Managing Director, said: “We took the strategic decision to in-source ground handling as we continue to grow and invest in our portfolio of services, as is the case at other RCA airports. “We have worked closely with our employees and airline customers throughout the transition and are pleased with the efficiencies we are seeing.” The transfer reflects a strategic approach to management, best practice and customer service across RCA, Rigby’s airport management division. Elsewhere at the airport, there are plans for a business park with one million sq ft of new commercial floor space, creating up to 1,900 jobs, and dedicated investment in logistics services and facilities for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Part of Rigby’s strategy to create a “worldclass business park”, the development would generate around £93 million a year for the 4

Dorset economy and unlock high quality employment land and facilitate associated infrastructure. The objective is to appeal to national and international manufacturing, logistics and aerospace businesses with a range of highquality, class-leading units. Aviation Business Park is already home to more than 200 national and international businesses across multiple market sectors. In a further boost to the airport, global aviation company Gama Aviation Plc officially opened a 135,000 sq ft MRO base last May, underlining Bournemouth’s reputation as a flagship aviation hub in southern England. A new executive lounge is also scheduled to open at Bournemouth Airport this year. Meanwhile, new routes have been added to the airport’s destination list for Summer 2020. Details of flights from Bournemouth Airport, which has seen passenger numbers grow by c.20%, are available in the Fly Bournemouth 2020 brochure. They include the stunning Greek islands of Skiathos, in the Aegean Sea, and Zante, in the
Ionian Sea. Skiathos, a filming location for the hit Abbathemed movie Mamma Mia!, and Zante, home to turtle nesting beaches, are run by TUI from May to October and May to September respectively. TUI is also introducing new 10 and 11 night holidays to mid-haul hotspot Antalya, on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, and providing more duration options for customers. Furthermore, for Winter 2020, is reintroducing the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh. Countries reached from Bournemouth include Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greek Islands, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Spain – Balearics, Spain – Canaries, Switzerland and Turkey. There is also fly/cruise Caribbean, through P&O Cruises, as well as Lapland, Arctic and the Northern Lights. Services also include year-round Dublin with Ryanair, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Ryanair and TUI are the principal airlines at Bournemouth Airport.

AFC Business turns ten!
AFC Business, the commercial arm of AFC Bournemouth, celebrated its tenth anniversary last month. Launched in 2009 when the Cherries were bottom of League 2 and had just come out of administration, AFC Business has flourished alongside the football club’s rise to elite league status. The free-to-join business club now has more than 700 members and is the engine for all the club’s commercial activities. AFC Bournemouth commercial director Rob Mitchell said: “I am really proud and delighted that AFC Business has reached ten years – and it is getting stronger. “We are a long way from 2009 when I was working alone in the commercial department and we had lost a lot of connections with the business community. I believed a new business club was a great 6

opportunity for the football club to reconnect with business, bring people into a fantastic venue, showcase our hospitality and facilities and secure support, partnerships and sponsorships with companies. “Thank you to the businesses who have supported the football club since those League 2 days. Our strategy won’t change – it is very important that we celebrate the business community that we have got and keep those connections as strong as we possibly can.” One such firm is chartered accountants and business advisers Hill Osborne, which sponsored its first AFC Bournemouth match back in 1991. Richard Osborne, director and die-hard Cherries fan since 1965, said: “Backing the /company/dorset-chamber/
business club was a natural progression for us – and sponsorship has certainly worked. We have all grown together in this club and made excellent long-term constructive relationships with businesses and professional people.” Mr Mitchell said AFC Bournemouth was continuing to look at ways of developing the business club, refreshing the events programme, delivering even better networking opportunities and ensuring businesses were getting full value for membership. Mr Mitchell and Mr Osborne were speaking at a celebratory lunch held recently at Vitality Stadium to mark the tenth anniversary of AFCB Business For further information about the business club, visit www.afcbusiness.afcb.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
The President’s Column by Liz Willingham
Happy new year! We are in a whole new decade. What does that mean for you? The ‘new year, new you’ thing is always a January focus for many, but it must be multiplied with a whole new decade ahead. It’s a good time to review and set out new goals for the future. I hope it brings you success and contentment both from a personal and business perspective. In some areas, things haven’t changed at all. As president of Dorset Chamber, I am still here! The past year has flown past and I was thrilled to be asked if I would do a second term, apparently only the second time in the chamber’s 70-year history. It gives me a chance to see a project or two through which have been bubbling away. The open debate about wellbeing, stress in the workplace, and mental health has now become a comfortable and constant topic of conversation within our chamber community. The conference held at the Hall & Woodhouse brewery in 2019 sponsored by Ouch Training was so successful and I’m pleased to hear it’s confirmed again this year; it’s testament to the need
for businesses to find information and support for their valued people. Business growth in our local economy within this sector is huge. That’s great, but sadly it’s also because the need is great. I know organisations of every size are putting the issue high on their agendas. I’d like to see the chamber go a step further. Whilst we need to continue to work on support structures and maintain awareness for our workforces, tell me what business organisation is looking out for our business leaders? Those who go to bed at night really needing to get a good night’s sleep but who stir at 3am then 4am then 5am, feeling the responsibility of multiple mortgages on their shoulders? There may be those in our business community who are struggling, or who are close to it and feel the pressure of the treadmill, the responsibility being too great to deal with. They may worry about their reputation and the reputation of their business. I believe Dorset Chamber, and perhaps the chamber network generally, is the right place for a neutral hub, go-to, safe place where

Chatham House rules apply, and a cry for help can be understood as a wish to get things back on track without judgement. I’d like to establish a programme that actually provides real live support to our membership and beyond. We are not qualified to treat people of course. All we can do is listen and signpost but if we can create the right, confidential infrastructure around this then we are on track. I think we need it, and the response when I put this to our AGM attendees last month was in resounding agreement. With so many coming forward with enthusiasm to help we have already agreed to hold a dedicated ambassadors meeting about the project. I will keep you posted about progress. Do feel free to message me if you have a view on the idea. We are fortunate to have a progressive chamber and chamber leadership here in Dorset. The
stuffy perceptions of the past I genuinely see are changing with a team which is not afraid to make bold decisions. We are now consistently profitable with hard work focused on doing the right thing for our members. I relish the fact they are open to ideas and prepared to go the extra mile for us. We are all hopeful for some certainty and steadiness to return to the country; let’s see if by the next time I write this column we will ‘have Brexit done’? In my wonderful Liz Lean PR world we are excited to be starting the year with new clients to look after as well as taking our valued longstanding clients into new communications territories too. Some have big investments and initiatives they are launching to the world and as ever we feel enormously privileged to be helping to shout about them. I want to say a huge thank you to my team for their amazing, hard work and for their constant support for me. I am extremely grateful. I am looking forward to my second year and to getting to know even more of you along the way. I wish you all a really positive start to the 2020s! Best, Liz

BUSINESS FOCUS INTERVIEW
With Diane Grannell Principle of Bournemouth & Poole College Q1. It’s great to meet you today Diane. I’d like to begin our interview by asking you what your vision for Bournemouth and Poole College is? A1. Our college Vision is Transformation through Skills and Knowledge and that reflects what lies at the heart of what we seek to achieve for our students, local employers and local community. I believe very strongly in the social value of education as well as the economic value and am proud of what we do to promote inclusion and social mobility. I want the college to be mentioned in the same breath as schools and universities - recognised for the crucial and unique role we play in equipping our students with the technical and personal skills and behaviours they will need to build a successful long term future. Q2. It's obviously essential there are very close links on education and business so you are teaching the skills industry requires – something we very much support through Young Chamber. What’s your thoughts on this and how do you develop these links within the College? A2. We address this in several ways. The curriculum we offer has to work within the confines of qualification and examination boards, our responsibility is to make it relevant by using up to date technology and adopting industry standards. We have set up a series of sector specific Employment Advisory Boards on which local employers sit; these comment directly on our curriculum content and our resources, we then make changes so that what students are learning is up to date and contemporary. Our vocational lecturers are generally industry qualified and they keep up to date through their professional links and practice - all our lecturers spend time back in their industry at least once a year as part of their college CPD. Many of our managers are involved in local employer forums and form strong links through this route. Q3. We all know that technology is changing all aspects of our lives and it’s obviously essential that businesses embrace technology if they are to remain competitive. I would imagine this presents educations providers with a real challenge in terms of training people for jobs that do not yet exist? A3. This isn’t a new concept – jobs have been changing since the start of the industrial revolution and there are many examples of jobs that no longer exist because they have been replaced by automation. As you say, what drives most change in society, including the world of work, is technology and automation but there are two major present-day considerations: firstly the increasing pace of change and secondly 10
January 2020 | Dorset Business Focus
the challenge of achieving inclusive change. As educators, there are several things we can do. Make sure that students are technically up to date when they leave college and ensure that all students have access to the digital technologies they need, especially those students who come from more disadvantaged backgrounds. But just as important as technical skills are the personal skills and behaviours students will need to cope with, and adapt to, change throughout their lives - we should all encourage them never to think they have stopped learning. And finally we need to partner with employers to build an infrastructure that supports lifelong learning in all its various forms. Q4. An issue we often hear raised by employers is the importance of employability skills, not just technical skills. What’s your approach to ensuring our young people have these essential skills and the right attitude to work? A4. Yes, that’s what we hear too! An analysis of job adverts by LinkedIn earlier this year highlighted the top five soft skills as being creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability and time management, but you can find lots of lists with slightly different skills. At BPC, we focus on helping our students to secure jobs as well as keep them. Employability is a key strand running through our curriculum both as an integral part of the vocational curriculum and also by way of bespoke sessions. We offer support with CV writing and interview practice and we set goals for personal development in the same way we do for study. A really valuable source of learning for students is to undertake a work placement, which for young people is an integral part of their study programme and which will be an even bigger part of the new T Levels. Sadly we struggle to secure enough work placements for all our students: I know employers sometimes find it challenging to devote the necessary resources to making these experiences meaningful, but it’s by far the most effective way of students learning the employability skills they will need, so the collective return on investment is significant in the long term. In fact, it can also be a source of future employees - many of our construction placements last year turned into apprenticeships this year! Q5. We are big supporters of apprenticeships in Dorset Chamber and we know that the College has a strong focus on apprenticeships across a wide range of sectors. When young people are making decisions about their future, they are obviously heavily influenced by their parents or carers, and I worry they may not really understand how apprenticeships work or even regard apprenticeships as a less academic route compared to A levels. How /company/dorset-chamber/
do you think we can educate parents so they understand the benefits and opportunities apprenticeships offer alongside the traditional route of A levels and a degree? A5. The 50% target for young people going to university was well meant but in practice has been damaging for technical and professional skills. It’s no accident that the UK now finds itself wondering how to promote the value of level 4 and 5 education to fill this skills gap. That said, I think attitudes are shifting and the parents I talk to at our Open Events are better informed about the value and long term career prospects that can be achieved through an apprenticeship route. Schools do have a key role to play through the careers advice and guidance they deliver to pupils and to parents and carers, as this helps form attitudes early on. However, there is still too often a belief that vocational routes are inferior and for the less bright, which I find perplexing when I look at the impressive range of local employers, many of them operating in highly specialist and innovative markets locally, nationally and internationally who offer well paid and interesting careers. We try to work closely with schools to ensure that as many pupils as possible are informed about the choices that are available and all our Open Events are well attended by the employers we work with and we are proud that in the face of an 8% decline in 16-18 year olds starting apprenticeships nationally, we’ve seen a 12% increase. Also of great value is the work you are doing through Young Chamber and events such as the annual Careers in Engineering evening hosted by Curtiss-Wright. Taking every opportunity to promote apprenticeship success can only help to enhance understanding. Q6. We often hear of the ‘skills gap’ and the challenges employers face when trying to fill vacancies at a higher skills level. How would you define the skills gap and what’s the approach the College is taking to try and address this? A6. I think defining the skills gap is near impossible! In Dorset with relatively low unemployment rates, it actually boils down to a people shortage. This means that it is vitally important for the college to offer a curriculum that matches the employment opportunities locally and for us to equip our students with the skills they need to join these businesses and make an early impact. To do this the links with
/dorsetchamber
@DorsetChamber
employers I described earlier are crucial and the exposure to work and the contacts that are made when students undertake their work placements is also important. Apprenticeships are an ideal solution to skills gaps and also to local skills retention, because on completion of their qualification, most apprentices stay with their employer. Final point here is that we design our full time curriculum to ensure that progression routes are explicit, whether that be into employment or to a higher level course. Q7. In March the Echo reported the College had been awarded a Grade 3 by Ofsted in your last inspection in a number of areas, meaning that improvement is required. Can you outline the steps the College is taking to improve and address the points raised in the report? A7. I’m very keen that the Grade 3 judgement doesn’t obscure the many positive things that were in our report, for example apprenticeship provision, where our achievement rates are already approximately 10% higher than national averages and our strong Partnerships with employers that were recognised by Ofsted. Our provision for adults and students with high needs were also highlighted as strengths. However we recognise what Ofsted said about our study programmes needing to improve and are working hard to address the areas for improvement. We were therefore very pleased that our student achievement rates on these programmes rose by just over 8% in the 18/19 academic year.
more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
Q8. We know that funding is a challenge for colleges across the UK and this is something the British Chambers of Commerce have pushing Government on within the Chamber network. How are you managing to meet these financial pressures? A8. Yes, a recent study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that post 16 education has faced the largest cuts in recent years. Funding per student drops by about 22% at the end of the secondary phase. Our base rate of funding has remained static since 2013, in fact the rate for 18 year olds was cut by a further 17.5% in 2014. Also in 2014 we were required to continue teaching maths and English to those who don’t have a GCSE but weren’t allocated any funding to do that (for us that is about 60% of our 3,000 full time students). So like all colleges we’ve had to become extremely creative. Several years ago we set up a Shared Services with Brockenhurst College, we have reduced management posts, transferred some tasks previously carried out by teachers to administrative staff, focused on teaching hours and group sizes, reduced our equipment replacement cycles and removed low value added activities. Q9. The College is a fantastic resource for the area, offering both young people and adults the opportunity to develop their skills, not just for leaning but also pleasure. How important do you think lifelong learning is?
A9. One of the tragedies of recent years is the decimation of adult learning. A recent survey by the Learning and Work Institute highlighted that 2018 saw the lowest participation rate in the 22 year history of the survey with just 35% of adults participating in learning in the previous three years. The survey also highlighted inequalities, with older adults and those from more disadvantaged parts of society being underrepresented. We know there is huge demand as we have seen an increase of over 60% in adults studying English and maths with us in the past year. Given that we have spoken today about the importance of re-skilling, of inclusion, of filling skills gaps, this approach is surely one that needs to be changed and it is pleasing to see reference to lifelong learning in some party manifestos. Q10. Dorset Chamber and the College are Business Partners and work closely together. Is there anything you’d specifically like to say to the many businesses and employees that will be reading this article? A10. I’d like to say that I am acutely conscious of the college’s responsibility to our community and the importance of what we need to deliver for individuals and for businesses. We are keen to partner with more businesses to widen our training offer and I would encourage any organisation or individual with ideas or queries to get in touch.

Business Coordinating Groups (BCG) – We have 8 Neighbourhood Inspectors based across Dorset who have responsibility for a set geographical areas. They have, or are in the process of doing, established Business Coordinating Groups or modified BIDs which are made up of a variety of business types within their area in order to identify issues that the groups can hope to resolve. If you would like more information about the BCG’s and wish to get involved in your local area contact me (details below). Business Crime Seminars – We would like to improve our engagement with the business community and are keen to work with you in making Dorset a hostile environment for offenders to operate. I have spoken to
BID managers and the Federation of Small Businesses about holding a number of short seminars themed on a particular subject. These would be held at different locations across the County and we are exploring the use of technology that would allow people to follow and participate in the event on-line as we appreciate that time is an important factor for you all. I am aware that in many areas there are already established networks with regular meetings and while we are happy to organise events, where possible, it would make sense if we could piggy-back an existing meeting. If you are part of such a group and would be happy to assist then I’d be very grateful if you could get in touch and if you have an idea for a particular topic you would like the Police to provide an input on then please let me know. Dorset Police Cyber Crime Unit – Employees are often considered to be the weak link in an organisations cyber security. However, despite the prevalence of the threat, just 27% of

Health-on-Line launch new product for SME’s Private medical insurer Health-onLine has today launched their new product, Business Protect, for the SME market. Business Protect offers a greater flexibility bringing more opportunity to meet a wider range of business needs and budgets.

The ability to pick and mix their own plan is new to the business health insurance market and one of the first of its kind; launched in conjunction with AXA PPP healthcare. Health-on-Line, SME Sales Manager Brendan said of the new product: “With truly flexible cover available, I feel the launch of our Business Protect product is going to be a pivotal moment in the employee benefits market! It’s no longer about what we have available and whether that meets your needs but about building a plan

businesses had cyber security training for their staff. A work force can only defend against a threat that they know about, and that’s where we can help. The Dorset Police Cyber Crime Unit is available to deliver free, impartial cyber security awareness sessions and workshops for businesses and networks. that really suits your employee’s requirements; ensuring both they and your business are getting the benefits they need and deserve. “This really is a turning point for private medical insurance. Because of the flexibility of our products, we can now provide healthcare benefits to a much wider audience, providing cover to businesses that either previously couldn’t afford it or they just couldn’t find a suitable product for their needs. “Whether you are looking for something comprehensive to cover you from beginning to end with our out-patient and treatment options, or are simply looking for a policy that just covers muscular skeletal issues, because your employees work in a physically demanding environment, with our Therapies package – Business Protect has it all.” Business Protect also allows options to be bought stand alone for the first time; giving

the potential to reach new SME markets with lower cost options. Customers now have the ability to choose different cover options for different employees, depending on seniority, role or length of service. For example, a new business could choose to purchase treatment, outpatient, therapies and travel for their business owners and directors, and additionally put in place a package for their wider workforce with Therapies and Employee Assistance Programmes. All customers, regardless of options purchased, will be given unlimited access to the virtual GP service, Doctor @ Hand for everyone covered. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS
Another year of milestones As 2020 begins, we wanted to reflect on the past 12 months. We thought 2018, our 15th anniversary year was a high, but 2019 proved to be yet another year of milestones, building relationships and exciting projects. Highlighting some of our standouts that took place helps to keep everyone focused and committed, so we wanted to share these! Following on from a number of new client wins at the end of 2018, the year commenced with everyone in high spirits and a selection of new projects. Our first major milestone was the new branding for The Mayfield Group; one of the countries leaders in park home decking and accessories. We unveiled the new brand at their annual supplier’s event at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth to a fantastic reception. Updating this 30-year-old brand with a fresh and effective new visual style sets them up for further successes and looks to reinvigorate and improve their marketing efforts. Following on from our work with the Bournemouth BID, we engaged the Weymouth BID including the We Are Weymouth tourism brand as their marketing partner. Due to our commitment to local authorities, programmes and initiatives, the whole team were excited by this new project. One of our immediate milestones was the new tourism directory and resource for the town which we launched in July. As we moved into April, Digital Storm commenced it’s first of many public speaking events with a number of our fab team presenting at the first of the Young Chambers, “Careers in..” series. This particular talk saw Curtis Williams, Leah Leach and Oli Evans discuss careers available within the industry for both University and Apprenticeship options whilst sharing their own experiences and career journeys. Many of our team have joined through apprenticeships, including our talented developer, Liam Geary. 20
January 2020 | Dorset Business Focus
The summer saw Digital Storm design and launch the website for Elysium Water Park, the £75 million waterpark which has received vast press attention with its potential opening in Bournemouth in 2023. We also welcomed several new members of the team including Olivia Girling, Chris Bowditch and Lucy Champion. Moving into August and following a rise of interest with podcasts, Digital Storm launched a new mobile podcasting service alongside a podcast for clients The Colour Works. This looked to explore the solutions that the business offered through insightful conversations with their clients and industry peers. As the award season came round, Digital Storm was selected as finalists for the Wirehive100 Brand Impact of the Year award for our work with The Colour Works. This saw a number of the team travel up to London for a Masquerade themed awards ceremony. We were proud this year to get involved with the 25th Dorset Business Awards and cosponsor the Creative Impact Award alongside Liz Lean PR. The idea behind this award was to recognise the great work being undertaken by the fantastic community of creative and digital companies around Dorset. “It wasn’t an easy decision to choose a winner, as all the finalists delivered highly impactful campaigns, but we had to choose one. Well done again to Global Brand Communications for winning!” says Lesley Simmons, Director.
As the year drew to a close, we managed to squeeze in a final success with the launch of the new Silicon South Network website. Throughout 2019 we got more involved with SiSo including joining the Steering Group. Having been delivering support to businesses for a number of years following a publicly funded agenda, SiSo are now changing to deliver an agenda set by the sector itself. “We are very proud to be involved with Silicon South as they look to offer support and increased opportunities to the creative, tech and digital sector” says Paul Andrews, Director. “It’s always been our goal to add true value to all our business endeavours. 2019 has been a great year for Digital Storm and we look forward to what 2020 will bring us and our clients. I would personally like to say a big thank you to our talented and dedicated team as well as to our fantastic clients.” Damion Hazael, Director.
In the past year, the UK has seen a 24% rise in the popularity of podcasts. Therefore Digital Storm saw this as being an important service to add to our marketing mix Curtis Williams, Marketing Manager. /company/dorset-chamber/

£250k R&D Cashback for Software Developer Innovation tax incentives consultant Rob Sowden of Business Cash Enabler reports a phenomenal government cashback for one of his software clients. Rob reports “I set up the owner of this software/data analytics business 3 years ago on HMRC’s Research & Development (R&D) tax credits scheme and so far the business has received in excess of £250k cashback. “Many businesses and their advisors haven’t associated the R&D tax credit scheme with the digital sector, however, innovation including software development, writing/integrating

APIs, algorithms, coding, Big Data analytics and app development, can all potentially meet the scheme criteria. Qualifying PAYE and 3rd party developer costs may qualify for cashback. “For the past five years I have been increasing awareness of the government’s innovation tax incentives. The R&D tax credits scheme was introduced back in 2000/01, yet it still

seems to me that we are just at the beginning of awareness, even though £26.9bn has paid out since inception, it is still estimated that around 80% of eligible companies have not claimed or have under-claimed. Some clients have been assisted to claim by their accountant as they are in an obvious sector such as engineering or manufacturing. Interestingly though, many businesses that are not in these classic innovation sectors are also benefiting from the government’s R&D cashback, notably digital and IT in Dorset, but no sector is exempt if a business has truly innovated. “The government paid out £4.3bn in the last reported year, with an average SME claimant receiving £53k annual benefit. Many companies that have previously claimed have received small amounts, £10k, £20k, £30k, when they may have been entitled to 2, 3 or 4 times that amount, often a healthy six-figure cashback. Under-claiming happens when the claim process is mistaken for an accountancy workstream, but it really requires a technical appraisal, combined with specialist knowledge of the
tax legislation. Maximised claims are based on a technologist-led approach to ensure all eligible innovation activities are included in a claim and importantly, that projects that aren’t eligible haven’t been included, avoiding a potential HMRC clawback. It is possible to receive a cashback under-claim for the prior two years, which can bring in an unexpected cash injection to a business - but there is a strict HMRC deadline for the prior two accounting periods, claim it or lose it! It is well worth asking for a free eligibility check, even if a business has previously benefited under the scheme.”

A-One Insurance Group Launches New Claims App The A-One Insurance Group (AOIG) has developed a free claims’ app to support clients with incidents across multiple areas of cover to assist with their claim process whilst also speeding up the whole claims process. The app called A One Insurance Claims, is available for both Apple, smart phones and android devices and covers all property and motor claims at present. Allowing 24/7 access to upload details when it is most convenient to the client and can be used as a prompt to capture the key information needed to support a claim. Developed in response to clients’ changing demands on availability and interaction, the app has been specifically designed to speed up a claim’s process and add flexibility to the way in which AOIG engages with its clients. Group Operations Director, Sarah Eades, said: “Claims can happen at any time, of the day or night and our newly created app
allows our clients to be walked through the claims process when reporting an event to enable them to provide relevant details and submit photos immediately, at any time, all from your phone or tablet. It is available for anyone holding a property or motor policy with us.” “Featuring a clear interface, the app offers straightforward quick questions, plus prompts, for all the key information - which when faced with an unexpected event many clients understandably can forget to capture.” “You can record the time and location of a claim. If you are at the scene of the incident, you can use GPS to pinpoint the precise location, select the cause of damage, give incident details, be prompted for 3rd party details, take photographs and give an approximate cost of damage incurred. It's easy to add witnesses and additional information, such as a crime reference number.
“Having all the relevant information to hand is not only important when the unexpected happens, but also offers reassurance through knowing that an accurate record of your information will go directly to us once you have reviewed it for submission. All of which will assist in reducing the length of time for a claim to be settled.” AOIG recently celebrated its silver jubilee and has grown to become a top 50UK Independent insurance brokerage and one of the largest privately-owned insurance brokers in England. From its head office at Ringwood, a team of more than 130 specialists work for people seeking cover for everyday personal requirements across the south in personal lines, SME business insurance, commercial risk management, protection and bespoke schemes, including aviation. With its commitment to innovative solutions, technology
has transformed A-One’s systems in 25 years and it has always been swift to respond to clients’ concerns. It was a national finalist in the Cyber Broker category of the UK Broker Awards 2018, in recognition of how it both promotes and delivers cyber cover. The Hip & Common Injuries The hip joint is what we call a ball and socket joint. This type of joint allows good amounts of movement but is also very stable. This is vitally important for the hip as it provides a connection from the pelvis to the lower limb. Bony anatomy: The main 2 parts we are concerned with are the socket in the pelvis, which we call the acetabulum and the ball at the end of the thigh bone, which we call the femoral head. Normal alignment of this joint allows the leg to move into a number of different directions but is also very stable when weight is going through it. There is also a strong capsule around the joint, with 3 very strong ligaments that wrap around the joint in different directions, again allowing movement but also stability. Hip Cartilage: Over the end of the femoral head and within the socket we can find shiny white articular cartilage. As it is shiny and smooth it helps reduce friction within the joint and can also add a small amount of cushioning. Around the lip of the socket we also have an additional piece of cartilage called the labrum which adds to increase to surface area of the socket, helping provide even more stability.
Hip Muscles:
Common Hip Injuries:
There is a long list of muscles associated with the hip (most people agree that there are 17 of importance). They work to move the hip in different directions: • Hip flexion – this involves bringing your knee to your chest and the muscles are all located at the front of your hip and thigh. • Hip extension – this movement involves taking your leg behind you, with the muscles being located in your bottom and back of your leg. • Hip adduction – taking your leg across you, with the muscles being in the groin and down the inside of your leg. • Hip abduction – taking your leg out to the side, with the muscles being found on the outside of your hip and thigh. • Hip rotation – your hip can rotate in and out with the muscles being in the pelvis and outside of the hip
There is a long list of potential hip injuries but here are some of the more common ones: • Hip osteoarthritis – as the shiny articular cartilage starts to wear, which is quite normal as part of us getting older, it can potentially get to a stage where it is worn through and exposes the bone. This can get very painful and affect mobility. • Hip fractures – more common in women over 65 and usually involves a fall onto the hip/side. • Hip impingement – this condition involves either the femoral head or the socket (sometimes both) not developing perfectly meaning the bones don’t articulate as they are supposed to. • Labral tears – associated with hip impingement are labral tears where the rim of cartilage around the socket can get caught between the bones and potentially torn. • Lateral hip pain – this involves the structures that cross or attach onto the bony prominence on the outside of the thigh, called the greater trochanter. • Muscle injuries – it is possible to injure any of the muscles associated with the hip. Most commonly we see adductor/groin strains.

Cycle challenge by 4Com raises over £26,000 1700 km Parisian cycle challenge by 4Com raises over £26,000 for MYTime Young Carers Charity and the Alzheimer’s Society! 4Com, an award- winning Telecoms communications company, with its UK HQ based in Bournemouth, took on a dual fundraising challenge to raise funds for MYTime Young Carers Charity and the Alzheimer’s Society. The popular staff challenge has, so far, raised an incredible £26,000 for the 2 charities. Over 100 staff members from the business took on the initial challenge of a 24- hour virtual cycle ride, covering the distance from Paris to Bournemouth, but with the intention of carrying on and achieving as many miles as possible to maximise money raised. An incredible distance of 1700 kms was achieved, the equivalent of 2 round trips from Paris to Bournemouth! 4Com cyclists took 30- minute ‘shifts’ on the static bikes in order to achieve their goal and even determinedly cycled throughout the night. There were 4 bikes set up, with at least 1 bike always in action. Cyclists could even see their journey as it happened as the bikes were linked to a TV screen, which detailed the route. Staff within the business didn’t miss out on any of the journey as the action was live steamed to all 8 floors of the 4Com building. Krista Cartlidge, Executive Director at MYTime Young Carers Charity kicked off the bike ride and put in a very credible ‘shift’, heading the leader board for some time with her performance. 4Com staff member, Mark Ashley joined Krista in her cycle shift and commented, “It’s really rewarding getting involved. I love cycling and doing it for 2 such great causes means achieving 2 4 1!” The second fundraising challenged involved 6 engineer staff who completed a 15,000 skydive. 4Com Director Dean Cartledge advised, “Charity is an integral part of our business culture, it’s hugely important to us. We like to get the staff involved in our fundraising challenges and make them feel a part of each initiative. We are hugely proud of staff commitment shown for this virtual cycle challenge, with over 100 staff participating and many more making donations.” MYTime Young Carers Charity Executive Director Krista Cartlidge enthused, “Wow, what a fantastic amount raised! A massive thank you to the incredible staff at 4Com for choosing to support MYTime with their virtual bike ride and skydiving event. Through the hard work and commitment shown by the staff at 4Com, MYTime will be able to provide young carers with a break at our outdoor centre in Worth Matravers. These breaks are an invaluable opportunity for young carers to have fun, make friends and to take some time out from their caring responsibilities.”
Greendale charge ahead at The Tank Museum
Dorset Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has started work at The Tank Museum, Dorset, where work is being carried out to create new office space for staff, as well as refitting existing offices. Based at Bovington, the main training centre for tanks in the First World War, The Tank Museum boasts one of the world’s best collections of tanks and live exhibitions, telling the story of armoured warfare from World War One to the present day. The works, which commenced on 24 September 2019, and are due for completion mid-February 2020, will be carried whilst the museum stays open with minimal disruption to the visiting public, and includes the removal of an existing mezzanine level and stairs, strip-out of existing offices, the construction of a new mezzanine floor for the newly built extended offices, and a full refit of the existing office space. During the project, Greendale has the tricky task of working around half a tank stationed on the ground floor which cannot be moved for the works. Chris Kane, Greendale Construction Director, commented: “Greendale loves a challenge and is experienced with working to tight schedules, limited space and tricky logistics, but it’s the first time our teams have had to work around half a tank! However, nothing fazes us, and we are proud to be working at Dorset’s largest indoor attraction and look forward to handing over the much improved office space in February.” Director of The Tank Museum, Richard Smith, commented: “In the last 10 years The Tank Museum’s visitor numbers have doubled and our workforce increased but our staff facilities remain the same size that they were in 1984. This development will address the issues of overcrowding and give our team a pleasant working environment.”
Suttles Electric Vehicles Drive A Dorset-based civil engineering and construction group is saving tonnes of CO2 emissions a year after adopting electric vehicles into its fleet. Suttles, which employs almost 100 members of staff across four sites in Poole and Swanage, has purchased 13 electric and hybrid vehicles over the past year, with plans to extend this further in 2020. Included in this number are seven fully electric vehicles (EV’s) from brands such as Tesla, Jaguar, Volkswagen and Peugeot with another being purchased at the end of this year, as well as five plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and one regenerative hybrid. The newest additions are two fully electric Peugeot vans which will reduce their emissions in the Poole area. These vehicles combined are estimated to be saving around 30 tonnes of CO2 and 218kg of NOx emissions per annum compared to the petrol and diesel vehicles they have replaced. Operations Director John Suttle voiced his thoughts on the subject: “My experience tells me that the cars and vans that we have invested in do herald a new benchmark for transportation in terms of their reduced impact on the environment and health, but also safety. I think that modified driving techniques in terms of maximising range and regeneration and taking charge breaks will, in time, lead to less accidents.” With the recent growth of the Suttles Group, they continually strive to minimise any negative impact they may have on the environment and this year saw Suttles accredited to ISO standards, a huge achievement meaning the company meets internationally recognised standards for its environmental management systems. Further recognition of the drive to continually improve on emissions reductions came from FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) with renewal of the companies’ Silver accreditation. John Suttle added: “Personally I’ve long been an advocate of the view that on a very basic level, humans could and should be generating and using energy more efficiently. As a business I think we’ve been making more progress in this regard since we obtained Swanworth Quarry in 2011. The difference we can make right now is limited but we aren’t finished just yet.” Suttles operate two quarries in Purbeck; Swanworth Quarry in Worth Matravers, California Quarry in Swanage as well as a recycling and merchanting depot at Mannings Heath Road, Poole. Over the last decade they have integrated a specialist civil engineering group, named Suttle Projects. These elements blend well together and bring new possibilities since Suttle Stone Quarries was originally founded in 1993. For more information please visit www.suttles.co.uk

The top policy issues and actions for Dorset In this my last contribution to the Dorset Business Magazine I bring you three more topical issues from my latest report to the Dorset Chamber. After some fifteen years working with the Chamber it is time to move on as they say: the Chamber team are a great bunch of people and they have supported me in business in so many ways over the years – we are very fortunate to have them working for us, especially in these challenging times. So, to help keep you up-to-date, here we go again: 1. The General Election and Brexit After a decade of governments struggling with weak or non-existent majorities, the UK now has a prime minister with considerable power – an 80 seat majority – and personal authority. The election last month was the most unpredictable in years yet it was a triumph for the Conservatives. Boris Johnson has the competitive advantage that he is unlikely to face strong opposition anytime soon. For the first time since the referendum of 2016 it is clear that the UK will leave the EU by the end of this month. Brexit, however, will be far from “done” as the government claims. The hard work of negotiating a UK-EU trade agreement with our nearest trading partner, and our future relationship with Europe, is just beginning. This trade agreement will need to be completed by the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 – intended to be two years, but now only eleven months. Most trade experts dismiss the prospects of reaching a deal with the EU in less than a year as all-but impossible. This means that there is still a risk that the UK could crash out of the EU with no-deal in December 2020 and in these circumstances we will revert to World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules. Currently, the WTO has its own problems but that’s a story for another time. Regrettably, what is being ignored is that there is no evidence whatsoever that a new complex trade deal can be agreed with the EU in eleven months. Partly, the length of time it takes to negotiate a trade deal depends on the type of deal in question e.g. is it a unilateral, bilateral or multilateral trade deal? Unilateral trade deals usually end up damaging the country that declares them. Recent examples of bilateral trade deals with the EU involve at least a three to four year timescale (and while the deal may be ‘done’ the smart question to ask is, what is the implementation date?). The EU-Canada trade deal negotiations started in 2009 and were concluded in 2014; however, the deal was not signed until two years later and is still subject to full ratification by the EU and national and some regional legislatures. One notable exception achieved by the US involved a bilateral trade deal with Jordan which was agreed in only 18 months (the US has a lot of people and resources to do the deal). By far the most complex trade deals are multilateral ones and the TransPacific Partnership deal between the US and Asia took 18 years to complete – then Donald Trump promptly withdrew the US from the deal when he became President. The point is good trade deals require give and take from both sides and they do not happen quickly. Business needs to accept that Brexit, and its after-effects, are going to be around for a long time. Before the election the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) published 2020 and beyond: business priorities for the next UK government Drawing on input from all 53 accredited 44
January 2020 | Dorset Business Focus
Chambers of Commerce across the country this publication is a shared action plan of business priorities focused on the key themes of: • • • • •
Brexit People Infrastructure International trade Business investment and costs
The key message from the BCC is “whether by design or disarray, the UK government must avoid a messy and disorderly Brexit”. The BCC also needs to educate government about the length of time it takes to negotiate a good trade deal to help manage expectations. What is clear is this government will now own Brexit and all of its consequences. Key dates to watch out for are: 31 January 2020 – After 47 years the UK will leave the EU, assuming Parliament has ratified the Withdrawal Agreement Bill. 1 February 2020 – The transition period begins and the UK will have eleven months to agree a trade deal with the EU. 1 July 2020 – Deadline for UK to request an extension to the transition period, if required (It was a Conservative Party manifesto pledge not to do this). 31 December 2020 – The EU’s transition period ends, with the UK free to implement its own trade deals with other countries, and free of all obligations to the EU. If no trade deal has been agreed by this date i.e. no-deal scenario, WTO rules will apply. 1 January 2021 – If a new EU-UK free trade deal has been agreed this should take effect, along with special treaty relationships. For specific business information see: • Prepare for EU Exit • BCC’s Brexit Hub • DCCI Brexit Support (Sources: BBC, BCC, DCCI, and The Economist) 2. Climate Emergency Like many other areas of England, Dorset Council declared a climate emergency in May 2019 and BCP Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019. The recent autumn floods in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire dramatically demonstrate the scale of the threat to business and our livelihoods. While many of us think such disasters happen to other people, stop for a moment, and think what if this happened to you and your business? It takes years to recover from flooding and things will never be the same again. So, what are we doing in Dorset? By declaring a climate emergency Dorset Council is: • Taking direct action to reduce the negative environmental impact of its services • Using these services to support and influence Dorset communities and organisations to reduce their carbon footprint • Working with partner organisations to develop a climate change strategy and action plan /company/dorset-chamber/
Ian Cambrook Pidela Consulting
Similarly, following a consultation with residents and businesses BCP Council submitted a report to full council last month outlining the actions they will be taking to address climate change. For more information see dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/climateemergency and BCP Council The climate emergency issue matters to us all and it’s time for action. Climate change continues to rise up the political agenda both at the national and local level. Dorset businesses will need to work with the councils to help shape strategy and contribute to the development of their action plans as they are taken forward. Here in the South West, Bristol is set to become the UK’s first city to ban diesel cars from entering parts of the city centre in a bid to cut air pollution – this scheme is due to start in 2021. (Sources: BBC, BCP Council and Dorset Council) 3. Council Plans Two new council plans which will affect our working lives and our businesses are in the final stages of preparation. BCP Council’s Plan – see BCP Plan – sets out longer term priorities, high-level actions and their commitments to equality and diversity. The plan focuses on five priorities: sustainable environment, dynamic region, connected communities, brighter futures, and fulfilled lives. This will be underpinned by a council wide delivery plan. For example, the dynamic region priority includes, revitalising our highstreets, creating a sustainable economy, investing in homes, developing sustainable infrastructure, supporting businesses, and creating a 21st century infrastructure. The aspirations for the BCP area are ambitious and a realistic delivery plan will need to be agreed. The Dorset Council Plan – see Dorset Council Plan – also focuses on five priorities: economic growth; unique environment; suitable housing; strong, healthy communities; and staying safe and well. The economic growth priority includes enhancing Dorset as a place to do business and attract inward investment, supporting the creation and growth of new businesses and in turn supporting job creation, improving transport and digital connectivity across the area, and enhancing the aspirations and skills to improve social mobility. The plan sets out an ambitious strategy to transform services while coping with continued financial challenges. This plan is due to be approved in February 2020. While you might think you are ‘too busy’ in your business to pay much attention to these council plans I urge you to look at them. A huge effort has gone into creating the two new unitary authorities here in Dorset and these plans will determine what does, and doesn’t, get done by the councils in the next four years. Well, that’s it – what a year our 70th anniversary year has been for the Dorset Chamber and those of us in business. I wonder what the new decade holds in store for us? And, happy new year to you all!

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
Council Tax Debt Collection Unfair Families across Britain are at breaking point after being plunged into increasing levels of debt because of unfair and old regulations that have seen councils using bailiffs to collect owed money. 10 years on from the financial crisis, households across the UK are only just recovering. This means that household budgets are still stretched. This increases the chances of slipping into debt. Citizens Advice has found that 2.2 million households are currently behind on their council tax payments. It has become common place for people to fall behind on essential bills. Council tax debt is an issue that has risen in prominence so much that it has in fact become the most common source of debt for clients of Citizens Advice. In 2018 Citizens Advice helped 96,000 people who were falling behind on payments across the country. Citizen’s advice has estimated that just over 2 million people have fallen behind with their council tax payments. Debt issues in general are often down to the way that councils try to collect outstanding debt from people. Citizen’s advice reported that a third of all the council tax problems facing people were strongly related to the practice of debt collection. Due to regulations that govern council tax in England, local authorities find it hard to collect debt with any flexibility. An example of this lack of flexibility is that if a person misses one payment they then become liable to pay the whole annual amount soon after. Councils are then left with
The 4 suggestions that Citizens advice believe will help are: 1. Stop asking people to pay their annual bill in its entirety if they miss a single payment. This step would allow for people to come to arrangements that would make it easier for them to keep up with repayments.
little choice other than to take people to court. Citizens Advice found that bailiffs are expensive and only recover around 30% of council tax debt last year. In 2018 councils used bailiffs on more than 1 million occasions to collect outstanding debt whilst employing other means of debt collection far less frequently. In 2018 bailiffs cost councils and homes across England £196 million. Most of that sum is paid by families struggling financially. Bailiffs also mistreat those in debt whilst out on collection. This means that households will feel the long term effects, whilst councils will only get back a tiny amount of what is owed to them. Citizen’s advice has recommended 4 actions that could lead to more effective and an all round fairer system when it comes to debt collection.
2. Allow councils to deduct benefits without getting a liability order. Such deductions would have to be made at realistic levels so households could continue to make payments. 3. Create more steps that councils will be obliged to take before going through the courts - giving households more chance to make affordable repayments. 4. Take away the threat of a custodial sentence for council tax arrears. Such a move would provide protection for the most vulnerable people and sway the negative culture surrounding debt collection to a more positive one. HR and IT Firms Fight System Stress Research by two Hampshire companies has inspired a fight against stress and inefficiency caused by poorly designed IT systems. They are raising awareness to the importance of ensuring that tasks required by employees should be simple to perform and not take longer using a computer. Gemma Murphy, Managing Director of View HR, lists the following issues that can have an impact on the productivity of an employee’s day. When they are unable to perform their job in a timely manner, it means they will be less efficient, and this then adds to the stress of the day. Often Employees are having to stay on out of their contractual hours to complete work. This then impacts on their overall happiness and wellbeing. The issues include: • Lack of user ability due to the slowness or indeed lack of training on old systems. • Waiting for things to load or the failure for things to correctly load and having to start again, due to data loss. • Having to look up data on different systems. • Unable to solve client’s problems in a timely manner or service them correctly. • Security and compliance issues. 46

“We are finding that poor systems are a key complaint that pops up on employee’s surveys, employees want to get on with their jobs, they don’t want to have to play catch up out of hours just because the system is failing them. Also, not everyone has a Manager who understands the impact of poor systems and the delays this can cause, in some cases, we’ve seen employers question an employee’s productivity but it’s their systems causing the performance issue! This is stressful,” said Gemma Murphy. Richard Austin, Director, at Ringwood based KFA Connect, which designs and develops IT solutions said that they have seen many examples of ageing and disparate systems within organisations over the years. “Integrated systems relieve pressure on employees by reducing errors and streamlining day to day tasks. Well designed, simple-to-use systems help employees to work efficiently, /company/dorset-chamber/
raise productivity and reduce time pressures. It’s amazing the time it frees up when staff are not having to use poorly designed systems that simply do not match their business processes; time which can be much better spent proactively growing the business.” “Additionally, companies should keep their systems up to date with the latest operating systems and browsers, to protect their employees from the anxieties of a cyber-attack,” said Richard Austin. REIDsteel confirms backing for British Steel A leading international structural steel firm has pledged to make British Steel its primary long-term supplier. John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has made a policy decision to use the steelmaker’s products for its wide range of buildings and structures in the UK, Europe and worldwide. The strengthening of ties is a further boost for British Steel as details of a takeover deal to secure the future of the firm are finalised. REIDsteel managing director Simon Boyd confirmed that British Steel will be the company’s preferred supplier following a two-day visit to Scunthorpe and Teesside. The REIDsteel delegation was also shown steelmaking processes during the trip. Simon said: “Both our businesses share a strong reputation for quality in British manufacturing and engineering worldwide. “We have been, and continue to be, a supporter of retaining steelmaking in the UK and we are pleased to confirm that our relationship is now stronger than ever. “Our congratulations go to all at British Steel on the takeover deal and we look forward to working together to help put UK steelmaking and manufacturing back on the world map where it belongs.” Simon was joined by commercial director Tim Cook, steel buyer Dave Watmore and production manager Alan Stone. He added: “The visit to British Steel was a fantastic opportunity for us to see iron ore go through the processes to make steel slabs that then get changed into many different products. “We saw rail sections being formed as well as standard steel beams that we then take and fabricate in the UK into a whole range of steel structures and export worldwide.” Ben Cunliffe, British Steel commercial director for construction, said: “It was
a pleasure to welcome Simon and the delegation from REIDsteel. “Working more closely together will deliver real benefits for our clients as well as the British steel sector and the wider UK economy as a whole.” British Steel have been leading a new initiative in conjunction with UK Steel, the ‘UK Steel Charter’ which aims to maximise opportunities for UK steel producers to supply their products and services into Construction and Infrastructure projects. Simon and the team at REIDsteel have committed to sign the UK Charter to show their ongoing support for the UK steel sector, along with other signatories such as Heathrow, Department for Transport and UK Govt Dept BEIS. REIDsteel, based in Christchurch, Dorset, with 130 staff, designs, manufactures and erects entire steel buildings worldwide including their cladding and glazing. The company, which celebrates its centenary this year, has exported to more than 140 countries to date. Its range of bespoke structures include bridges, hospitals, sports stadia, disaster resilient buildings, defensive structures, churches, schools, industrial & commercial buildings, warehouses and advanced aircraft hangars. British Steel is a world leader in the production of long steel products – such as steel girders, beams and railway tracks as well as wire used in car tyres and industry – with facilities in the UK and France. It employs 4,000 people at factories in Scunthorpe and Teesside. Chinese firm Jingye has signed a deal to take over the company after it collapsed in May and has vowed to invest £1.2bn. Phase 2 launch of Co-Lo and Rack Space in Poole ‘The Cloud you can touch’
What does it take to move up to director level
It is one of the big leaps that defines a career – the move from managing people to leading as a company director. If that move has been on your mind, you might be wondering whether you’re ready. You might also be asking how you can demonstrate that you are equal to the task – and what to expect when you get there. Sally Bennett, Executive Manager at TeamExecutive says, “A lot of people have a director role in their sights, she states.” Sally recognises the difference between a manager’s job and that of a director is all about motivating others. “It is about strategy, but it is also about how you portray that vision to your team in order for them to meet the objectives of that
business,” she says. “That is a challenge in itself. How can you project that vision and where the company needs to go? And how do you get them to go there? If you have that, but you haven’t got all the technical knowledge, well, you can learn the technical knowledge. To an extent, it’s the natural leadership that is so important.” If a candidate can show they can handle both strategy and accountability, then a role as future director is attainable. You just need to the right recruitment guide to be with you. www.teamjobs.co.uk

This was the vision Director Wayne Simpson that sparked the idea of building a Tier 2 data centre in Poole. Wayne states 'The words virtualisation and cloud are often heard in the world of IT, never more so than in 2019. While most business owners are comfortable with putting their emails into ‘the cloud’ and using google, 365 and the like some applications they want to retain control of but benefit from not running these applications on their own servers in house, with the associated costs. Juice Broadband spotted this niche. They can provide connectivity for customers moving their services into the cloud. They also offer a cloud service with a difference. By allowing customers to offsite their service and instead of losing control of their data into a cloud, which can be stored anywhere, the server and data is stored in one of their data centers. By opening a pop in Poole, customers are directly connected
to the data centre, a bit like picking up a server room and relocating it into our facility, allowing us to worry about power, cooling and hardware issues. The first services went live in August 2018 and they have delivered 100% up time and zero outages. These results are due to the POP being fed diversely from 3 different providers, Openreach, Virgin and a Microwave connection into the Juice Broadband network. The next phase of rack space will be launched in December with the opportunity for local businesses for co-location and rack space. www.juice-broadband.com

Harlees Fish and Chips tackles climate change Harlees Fish and Chips in Verwood have reduced their carbon footprint by a whopping 10.6 tonnes of carbon per year. The family run business has invested into new frying technology and solar energy at the Verwood shop on Manor Road, part funded by a grant awarded by Low Carbon Dorset. The new frying range built and designed by Kiremco, the market leader in Great Britain for frying systems and ranges. The new range contains high efficiency engineering with a gas efficiency level of 94%, the highest in Europe. These advances in technology
also reduce cooking oil waste to up to 40%. The installation of 6 kWp solar panels (PV) to the shop also aids the reduction in the shops carbon footprint, supplying any additional energy to the national grid. These investments have reduced the shops carbon footprint by 10.6 tonnes of carbon per year! Richard, a Director of Harlees said ‘As a local business we need to do our bit to reduce our impact
on our local community and beyond. After 17 years it was time to invest in a new frying range. Not only do these changes help the environment but the efficiencies will also shorten cooking times and increase quality’.
The business is reviewing other ways it can improve its impact on the environment, from changes to packaging to products served. You can keep up to date with Harlees news via their website www.harlees.co.uk or following @ harleesfish on socials.

Small businesses that may fear a big fine for breaching the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or do not know if a breach requires reporting to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) can now use an affordable new helpline for advice. Tracey O’Connell Founding Director of Bournemouth based Lawpoint and her legal team can now provide quick advice to businesses (regulated or otherwise) to avoid or manage reportable security breaches. “Not everyone wants to pay for expensive advice when they are not even sure whether or not a reportable security breach has occurred or how serious it is. However, not acting the right way or quickly enough to a reportable security breach could cost your business more”, said Tracey O’Connell. “This is all about taking care of people’s personal data and minimising the impact if things go wrong.” Lawpoint describes GDPR as an octopus that can reach into any aspect of the day to day running of an organisation and therefore needs controlling. Businesses of any size can face the potential of a security breach even if the company has its own appointed DPO (Data Protection Officer). Whilst a hacked IT system or the loss of an unencrypted laptop may be more obvious security breaches, a simple miss-sent email containing personal data of a customer may also be
/company/dorset-chamber/
/dorsetchamber
considered a security breach. “We do this regularly for our own clients and know that not every security breach requires notification - it all depends on the risk that the breach poses to individuals. The helpline (offered within normal office hours) will not be a place where callers will receive lectures but concise answers and next stage advice, especially as a business must confess to a reportable security breach within 72 hours of a staff member recognising the issue,” said Tracey. “In our experience, the ICO will not look favourably on businesses who have not reported a security breach but where that breach has been reported to the ICO by an affected individual.” Information can be found by visiting www.law-point.co.uk/gdpr-breach

Renault Master dci 135 Business +
AT 6.2M LONG AND 2.8M HIGH THE REAR LOAD-SPACE IS CAVERNOUS Ever wondered what it would be like to drive a delivery van for a week? Ok, I’m the only one then. This month I have spent time with the WhatVan? 2020 winner, the new Renault Master van from Hendy Renault. From the start the new Renault Master is practical and car-like with good generous kit. The Business+ model I tested has air conditioning, parking sensors, Bluetooth and fold down table with under seat storage. A wide view passenger mirror eliminates the notorious dangerous panel van blind spot when pulling out of junctions, something that I feel should be standard on all vans. The extensive options list includes Lane departure warning, Blind spot warning and Active Emergency Braking Systems to make your life behind the wheel easier. Inside the cab the first thing you notice is the standard variable suspension driver’s seat, something anyone who drives a 7.5t lorry or larger will be familiar
with, and the high seating position which gives you an excellent view. It certainly made the longer journeys on our potholed roads more comfortable. Renault have prioritized cab space with a claimed 105L practical storage, there are places to put your stuff everywhere, well done Renault. But businesses buy these vans for the load space. The long wheel base, medium height roof version I have been driving offers a payload of 1427 kg and at over 6.2m long and 2.8m high the rear is cavernous. Plenty of space for 40 road signs and barriers I needed for an event and for the contents of 2 rooms when moving furniture. On the outside the new Master van gets a new modern and aggressive look dominated by a huge front grill. It is powered by more efficient new engines, still 2.3 dCi units, but they now come with selective catalytic reduction and twin-turbos to boost efficiency and performance. I can assure you even when fully ladened the Master is no slouch.
However, in my time I struggled to match the claimed 40.4mpg average, sitting most of the time around 32-34mpg. For a long wheelbase van this is respectable and I’m sure with a little less right foot I could have achieved more. Renault has always offered its customers more than the competition and now with a new breed of economical large vans at a time when businesses are under pressure to be mindful of fuel consumption and emissions regulations, the new Master will become a familiar sight across Dorset. Dorset Chamber members and their employees receive exclusive discounts on all Renault vehicles through our affinity scheme. With 35% discount on Renault vans through Business Partner Hendy Group. Time management is impossible! You cannot and will never be able to manage time. It is an abstract concept. You can, however, manage yourself. You can take responsibility for how productive you are in the time you have available. All business people have the same number of hours in the day as you – so what’s the difference between their success and yours? The answer is simple: How they choose to use their time, and how productive they are as a result. Here are The Passionate PA’s top tips to better self-management: Complete the most important tasks first This is the golden rule of effective business management. Identify two or three tasks that are the most crucial to complete and do those first. Once these are done, your day is already a success.
Have a ‘jobs to-do’ list every day •
There are four classification of job type:
•
Important and Urgent (do these immediately)
•
Important but Not Urgent (block time in your diary/schedule to complete these)
•
Urgent but Not Important (delegate these tasks if possible, do during allotted admin time)
Not Urgent and Not Important (Make a note of these so you don’t forget they need doing at some point – they may well become Urgent) Build in some buffer time too, for wriggle room and in case Important and Urgent tasks arise.
Block out distractions Prioritise yourself and your business. Put your phone on silent and allow yourself to focus. Be strict with yourself (and others) and channel your attention by using only one device.
Organise your inbox Diarise two slots each day for email management – no more than this and don’t have it open all day as it can drag your focus away. Use folders, sub-folders and the flagging tool for items you need to come back to or are waiting on a reply to. Diarise a monthly inbox clear-out.
Don’t strive for perfection Always keep the bigger picture in mind; contrary to popular belief, perfectionism is not a positive mindset. Do the job to the best of your abilities, in the sensible amount of time allotted, and move on.
Sleep, exercise and take time to relax Tired people procrastinate more and get distracted easily. Allowing yourself downtime between tasks can be a breath of fresh air for your brain.
Be assertive and don’t be afraid to say no Are you certain that what you are doing is the best use of your time? Outsourcing could be the answer Most business can outsource something, and there is a wealth of skilled and talented freelancers and specialists out there that can add to your business. Let enjoyment be the goal We often forget to enjoy what we are doing. Even when we focus on working SMARTER, we are still often too focused on simply getting things done. Think about reshaping your business to spend 80% of your time on the bits you enjoy. You have to be brave to push beyond the norm and your own limiting beliefs, but that’s where the magic can happen. How to Revitalise a Brand Using a Live Event Neil Coombes, Senior Account Manager at award-winning event and communication agency, UKSV, lends his insight into brand revitalisation and why businesses should choose a live event if they decide to re-evaluate. There comes a point when every established product reaches its peak, plateaus out, and starts losing customer interest resulting in falling profits. There are many reasons why this happens: increased competition, changes in popular culture and tastes, companies undergoing a major change, or the product’s lifespan reaches a natural end. This is where brand revitalisation can help to bring the product back in the market. One of the most effective ways of revitalising a brand is with a high-impact live event. This needs to be part of a wider marketing campaign, but the beauty of a live event is the control it gives you. With a ‘soft’ launch, such as a stand-alone video or social media advert, your message can be open to interpretation. It might not reach the people you want to influence, and those that it does reach might only absorb the information they feel is relevant to them. With a ‘hard’ launch - a live event - you can bring together a target 52
January 2020 | Dorset Business Focus
audience, deliver a consistent message to a core group of people and create a memorable occasion that reflects the brand image that you want to project and stays with your audience long after the event has finished. A key factor which is essential to the impact of your brand revitalisation event is the attendees. In order to identify your attendees, you must first consider the aim of your event. Press and media contacts are essential if you want to gain more publicity for your product. If you want to engage with an audience who could become advocates of your product, you may want to invite key people in your industry and influential celebrities. To generate direct sales on the evening, opening up the event to loyal customers will significantly help boost sales of the product whilst ensuring that these dedicated customers feel like they are a valued part of your brand. Technology is a must-have at a brand revitalisation event and enables you to get your message across in diverse ways that can capture the attention of delegates. Creative use of live-action or animated video can highlight the key takeaways from your revitalised brand. Involve your audience - encourage them to /company/dorset-chamber/
spread your new message across social media with a unique hashtag. The value of gathering feedback about a brand revitalisation should not be overlooked. This is vital for future marketing, but also understanding the effectiveness of your revitalisation as a whole. To ensure a high number of responses, UKSV recommend distributing post-event surveys to attendees immediately after the event so it is still at the forefront of their mind. A live event, delivered with creativity and imagination, is a great way to revitalise your brand and return it, very much alive and kicking, back into the marketplace. Stick to a professional delivery, key messages and a well-researched audience; and your brand revitalisation event will fulfil its maximum potential.
