Bin Your Butt Campaign came to Ferndown We invited you to get involved with a new campaign that focused on reducing cigarette related litter on Ferndown’s streets and in your public spaces. What’s the issue? Cigarette butts are one of most commonly collected bits of litter within the UK. Due to their small size, people don’t often think of them as litter. Not only are cigarette butts unsightly, but the filters also contain plastic fibres; if they make their way down the drains, it means they stick around once in the sea, and it can take between 18 months to 10 years for a cigarette filter to decompose. Why was Ferndown chosen? From a recent county wide audit carried out by the Dorset Waste Partnership street sweepers, it identified Ferndown as one of the highest areas where cigarette litter was found.

We held an event on Tuesday 26th September 10am – 4pm in the Ferndown centre to highlight the issue of cigarette butts. This event saw giant cigarette butts put in different positions and locations along the town centre. We hoped they would attract the attention of shoppers. We were there handing out stubby packs (pocket-sized portable bins) to smokers, and gave out information about the issue. We also chatted to local businesses. The cigarettes may appear again at various times and locations, but this will depend on whether we can get a business to take ownership of them during the campaign. In the future, watch out for the butts when you’re in town. Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council

Local people urged to do ‘Christmas without credit’

A FREE local debt counselling service is calling on people living in East Dorset to save and stay in the black this Christmas. The warning comes from Pam Ansell, East Dorset Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre Manager, as the countdown to the festivities begins. Run by Hope Church, Ferndown and The Bus Stop Club Charity, in partnership with CAP, the debt centre opened three years ago helping more than 60 families and single people, with 10 so far becoming debt free. Pam Ansell, East Dorset CAP Debt Centre Manager, said: “With personal borrowing on the rise, we are warning people to plan what they are going to spend this Christmas and save as much as they can. This way, with close to

70 days to go they can enjoy a Christmas without credit. “Every year we see people whose finances were already fragile but too much Christmas spending pushed them over the edge. It doesn’t have to be that way if you start early. Just saving £5 per week now will give you £60 to spend on presents and food. “Of course, we’re missing a trick if we think Christmas is only about spending money. Memories are not about which label we buy, they are made by spending time together with family and friends. Once you’ve started to prepare, you can get that perspective instead of the

usual last minute panic that can result in using credit and the worry that follows.” All debt clients are visited in their home by members of the local CAP centre who explain the service face-to-face and collect their paperwork. Meanwhile, specialist teams at CAP head office negotiate with creditors and create a workable budget enabling each person to go debt free. Pam Ansell said: “If you are struggling to pay the bills, and you’re being chased for money you don’t have, please let us help you. One phone call could be the difference between a merry Christmas or a miserable one.

Poppies to explode over Ferndown Saturday 28th October 2017

F

ollowing the success of Ferndown’s first town-centre Poppy Launch last year, Ferndown Town Council, The Royal British Legion and the Barrington Theatre, supported by local businesses and the Ferndown Chamber of Commerce, are again organising a massive community event to launch the 2017 Poppy Appeal with a great big bang! Starting the day at 10.00am with the judging of the Children’s ‘Best Dressed Poppy’ competition, the children and families parade will be led through the Penny’s Walk precinct by the Mayor, Cllr. Mrs. Cathy Lugg, with her escort of Chelsea Pensioners

and the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band. The traditional playing of the ‘Last Post’ and the Silence at 11.00am will signal the ‘Poppy Explosion’ with thousands of poppy petals fired from the Barrington and falling onto the precinct and crowd. This will be followed by the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band in concert before performances by local singers and groups, together with the presentation of the Mayor’s ‘Best Dressed Window’ award for town-centre shops and businesses, some surprise guests and static displays from Dad’s Army, Ferndown RBL Modellers, the Dorset RBL Riders and many others.

Civic Service held at St. Mary’s Church Friday 8th September 2017

O

n a cool autumn evening, Mayor Cathy Lugg welcomed the people of Ferndown, the MP for Christchurch Christopher Chope, Town Councillors of Ferndown and several fellow Mayors and civic leaders of Dorset to the Ferndown Civic Service at St. Mary’s church. The service was announced by the town crier Mike Andrews and opened by Rev. Sarah Pix with the Standard being presented to Rev. Sarah Pix by 2358 (Ferndown) Squadron Air Training Corps. Mayor Cathy Lugg shared the importance of this occasion in the town’s yearly calendar by thanking everyone who was involved in putting the service together, in particular the Town Clerk and the Mayors secretary. She also thanked Sarah Pix for making the service so special. Two young people from our community - Harriet Jones from Ferndown Middle School and Grace Hill, Dorset Youth Councillor from Ferndown Upper School read the Bible readings from the book of Mark and Philippians. The collection was taken for the Mayor’s chosen charity, the Ferndown Wheel Park, which

is a fantastic facility for wheeled sports such as BMX, scooters and skaters and is well utilised by Ferndown’s young people. After singing several hymns, including ‘In Christ Alone’ and ‘My Jesus, My Saviour’ the service was closed with a final prayer, blessing and the National Anthem. Everyone was warmly invited to join in a hog roast with light refreshments and music sung by Amie Bedford ‘Ferndown Live 2018 semi-finalist’ in the Beacon Café.

Help the Homeless Christmas Appeal – Ferndown Organiser Steve Lugg has gathered together a partnership of local community organisations, businesses, councillors and the public for the 2nd Ferndown area wide shoebox appeal, after 84 packages were donated to the local homeless last year. Representatives gathered for the launch on Saturday 2nd September at Meridian Air Conditioning on Ringwood Road, Ferndown with the Mayor, Cllr Cathy Lugg, Suzanne Lovell from Meridian and Kath Osborne, senior manager at the local homeless centre – with kind support from others. Pledges of help and support have already come in from local churches, businesses and organisations, as well as individuals. Steve is confident of sending off 100 packages to Help the Homeless by the end of November. Last date for receipt at Meridian is Wed 29th November please. Donations can be delivered to Meridian at its convenient Ferndown town centre location, from Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings. Part packages and single item donations are welcome. Wrapped shoeboxes are welcome, but so is a full supermarket bag for life! Toiletries (no aerosols please), accessories such as socks, gloves and hats, and confectionary are all welcome in the packages, and Meridian and Cllr Steve Lugg will be sharing a ‘kit list’ shortly. Find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/

Cllrstevenlugg/. Steve, with a small group in the area have been supporting Wendy our amazing local coordinator in an all year-round effort to provide clothes and toiletries, with some dry food goods and tins to the charity. In extending these efforts Meridian has offered to act as an all-year round central location for first deposits of these items, as well as supporting the Christmas Appeal. Steve said, “In Suzanne I’ve found someone with the same passion as Wendy, myself and other good people in our community to help on an on-going basis. We want to raise awareness, help at Christmas, but perhaps most importantly, help all year-round. Thanks to everyone who intends to get involved, let’s raise some eyebrows with the number of packages we send to Kath and her clients!”

Reporting a collision

M

embers of the public can now report crashes using an online form to help Dorset Highways collect valuable information about incidents on our roads. The ‘Report a collision online’ is available on dorsetforyou. com and can be selected via dorsetforyou.gov.uk/traveldorset/roads-and-driving/ road-information/road-safety/ engineering-statistics. Road traffic collision data is

12

validated and provided to us by Dorset Police, this data includes collisions that result in personal injury. Although this provides us with valuable information it doesn’t give the complete picture of the incidents on Dorset’s roads. Crashes reported using this new form will feed into our formal collision site investigation programme, and could inform future works if the site is found to be in need of improvement. Although

an individual report may not necessarily result in immediate action, it will ensure that we are better informed than we have been in the past. Please note, if you’re reporting a collision that has resulted in damage and requires immediate attention, such as debris on or obstruction to the highway and/or damage to street furniture, then this must still be reported on 01305 221020. This will ensure immediate action can be taken to rectify the problem.

The Mayor’s Charity Event

O

n Saturday evening, the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Cathy Lugg, hosted an evening of country, folk and guitar sounds at Ferndown’s Royal British Legion. It was Mayor Cathy’s first charity event in her role as Mayor and it was an incredible evening of live performances from Calvin-Billington Glen followed by Paul Evans - a great artist in the mould of Johnny Cash. The second half saw a stunning performance from songbird and guitarist Emma Hardy and the audience was treated to an amazing duet of ‘Living on a Prayer’ between Emma and singer/ songwriter Matt Griffiths. Matt finished the evening with a number of folk and country covers delivered in his unique style. Over £550 was raised from ticket sales and all proceeds will go to the Mayor’s Charity for 2017/18 – Ferndown Wheel Park. Mayor Cathy would like to extend her thanks to all the artists who performed for free, the staff at the Royal British Legion and everyone who bought tickets for the event.

Youth Club (Ferndown Youth Centre) “When are you opening?” a question I get asked quite often now that word has spread that the Youth Centre will be here soon. Funded by Ferndown Town Council, we will be offering youth club sessions and support to young people aged 10-19. The youth club will provide a space for young people to go that enables them to take part in informal learning, access support and advice and, perhaps most importantly of all, have fun in a safe environment. Ferndown Youth Centre will be open Wednesday through to Friday evenings providing a planned programme of activities for specific year groups, while Thursday and Friday afternoons will be a youth café drop in. Preparing the KGV Bowling Green for that perfect ‘bowling experience’ It’s that time of the year again when the KGV Bowling Green is turned over in preparation for the start of April 2018. For the first time the ground staff are trying out a different method using a verti drainer attached to the tractor. The first step of the process, pattern spacing, is achieved with small holes being pierced 8-9 inches deep to relieve any compaction on the green. The scarifying machine then digs deep, bringing up all the thatch (old material) to the surface which is then cleaned off manually.

Following this the Green is re-seeded and a top dressing is applied. Four tonnes of specialised sand is applied to replace the thatch material and this encourages the grass seed to come through. The sand is then brushed completely across the Green to help integrate with the top profile. Following this, fertilizer is spread across the Green with the hope that it rains.

oks

A Week later it lo like this

The Green is brushed every day to keep the sand from laying and allow the grass to grow evenly. 20

Thankfully it did!

12 days later,

the grass is growing and is now well established.

Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council

The plan now is to cut the green at 8mm to encourage grass growth then apply more fertilizer in three weeks to encourage the grass to grow. And weather permitting; the verti drainer process could be done again in 4 weeks’ time. Job well done!

2358 (Ferndown) Squadron’s Cadets attended the Dorset & Wiltshire Wing Activity Day in September Cadet Corney had this to say “Wing activities day was a great day out with the squadron to MoD Boscombe Down. We all had a part to play in at least one of the many competitive competitions whether this was drill, first aid, banner drill, initiative exercises amongst others. It was great fun and in-between the

competitions there were more activities you could do just for some fun; there was archery, a climbing wall or learning some mountain biking skills. You could buy some food at the tuck shop or even get some candy floss. All in all it was a great day and everyone is looking forward to it next year.”

Ferndown’s annual mayoral Civic Day Ferndown’s annual mayoral Civic Day took place on 13th July and what a beautiful sunny day it was. Mayors and Chairmen from across Dorset joined the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Cathy Lugg, of a tour of many of the wonderful assets Ferndown has

to its name. The tour commenced with a visit to E-Tel Express located along Christchurch Road East where business owner Philip Clark gave an overview of the network telex company which offers a myriad of services from local & international courier services to telegrams. The Mayor and her fellow dignitaries then visited High Mead Farm where they were met by the Farm’s team of volunteers and co-farmers who told them all about the horticultural and craft activities on offer. The

Mayor and her guests had the pleasure of meeting a number of the farm’s residents including Daphne the Donkey and also took the opportunity to purchase produce from the farm at its shop. The last visit of the day was to Trehane Nursery, a camellia and blueberry specialist. Although the camellias were not in flower, the ‘Chain Gang’ were given an overview of the nursery’s long history which has been instrumental in introducing many new varieties into this

country. There was also an opportunity to visit the Dorset Blueberry plantation at the nursery which is the oldest commercial plantation in the UK. A number of blueberries were sampled by the guests and punnets purchased for enjoyment at home. The Mayor and her guests then headed back to the Forest Inn at Ferndown Forest Golf Club for refreshments with music provided by vocalist Tori Allen, concluding what was a very enjoyable day.

Two Paces Behind – The Deputy Mayor (Thoughts of) Being the Deputy Mayor, whilst also coincidentally being the Mayor’s Consort is an unusual position. It’s important to support The Worshipful the Mayor with her initiatives, whilst standing in as required, supporting the community across Ferndown, and also planning for the future Mayoral year ahead. I am particularly excited about the new Ferndown Volunteer Awards. For me, with working to pay the mortgage also, being a councillor at district and county, being a member of The Queen’s

Body Guard, and other local commitments such as President of the Royal British Legion and organising annually, ‘Live Ferndown’, it requires drive, organisation, and the ability to put your life into little boxes. Without that discipline, you are quickly sunk! Nearly six months in, I can say it’s fun but demanding. As a previous Chairman of the district council and this being my third spell as Deputy Mayor, there are few surprises. I love helping and supporting local people, and most are a delight to work with! Some days are challenging though, and

you have to be able to pick yourself up from the floor as we all face the occasional challenge which is fine, and abuse, which is not. I feel lucky with our staff team, and that makes life easier. The Mayor’s PA Kate Osborne is everything one could wish for in that post and the staff team are headed up by one of the best Town Clerks in the country. I encourage residents to get in touch with me on any matter, and particularly with regard to anything they want to see happen on

Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council

the Ceremonial or Civic front during 2018/19. I am planning to utilise the Town Crier as much as he will volunteer, appoint a young person as my official photographer, and have a Mayor’s Cadet. I will continue to serve Ferndown whilst electors vote for me. I will always listen to your views and, be honest as, you can’t please everybody, all the time. 29
