AGM March 2017

The Mayor, Mike Parkes welcomed all those present to the Ferndown Annual Town Meeting and thanked everyone for attending. The Mayor gave an overview of many of the activities that have taken place throughout the year for the Town Council and Ferndowns residents. In the month of May, the Royal British Legion leading the commemorations, recognising the centenary of the Battle of Jutland. In June the town joined in with the national celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday. There was also the third ‘Fete on the Field’ and 10K & 5K runs organised by volunteers from the community, once again Ferndown Upper School held their annual Arts Week. At the start of July, the town joined in with the national Battle of the Somme commemorations and an open air ‘Drum Head’ Service at St Mary’s was very well attended. The long awaited opening of the new Marks & Spencer Food store was met with enthusiasm across the town. Ferndown Culture week took place at the Barrington and at other venues in the town, enabling local talent and artists to come and perform to a wide audience. Our long association with our twin town of Segré in France continued in August and saw a coach load of visitors stay with host families around the town and take part in various activities laid on for them by the Twinning Association. In early September the Mayor hosted his Civic Day where he was able to showcase elements of the town to the civic representatives from across Dorset. We were delighted to see EDDC launch the early stages of improving our town centre with the commencement of a Town Centre strategy study which has involved a number of consultation exercises with the general public and also key stakeholder groups. The various churches and religious groups in

the town continue to be an important part of life to many of our residents and we were delighted to welcome Everton McCloud as the new vicar at Hampreston. The end of October saw Ferndown hosting the Dorset Poppy Appeal Launch. This was a major event for the town and we were privileged to host it. Remembrance Day itself was probably the best attended, for many many years. St Mary’s church was literally bursting at the seams and it was tremendous to see so many of the next generation taking part in this important community act of reflection. There were numerous community events held within the town over the Christmas period, including the Civic Carol Service hosted by the Mayor. Towards the latter part of the year the Town Council considered the implications of Dorset County Council’s closure of the Riffs Youth Centre and as such, following some study visits, agreed to bid for running youth services within the town which includes reopening the much needed youth centre. A task and finish group had been appointed within the Town Council to look at the future of the KGV campus, recognising many of the facilities were starting to get tired and would need significant investment over the forthcoming years. The Town Council agreed to invest £1million into improvements to the facilities by taking advantage of a public works loan with low interest rates available fixed for thirty years. Public consultations on youth provision & KGV were held in January which were extremely well attended and all those who attended were supportive of both the initiatives being led by the Town Council. The Mayor concluded that it had been a very busy but positive year within the town and it was tremendous to see Ferndown continuing to demonstrate itself in such a good light.

Volunteers CLEAN UP Ferndown Volunteers got together in Ferndown on Sunday 5 March to support the Great British Spring Clean 2017, and removed fly tipping, vegetation and litter from the area around the Turbary Shops. Cllr Steve Lugg said, “Imagine if we all picked up one piece of litter. In this case, a small action by many could change the world. Thanks to the volunteers this morning for wading through rain and mud to clear up.”

‘Use our Loo’ Finding a toilet in any town can be challenging but if you live with dementia it can be much more of a problem. However, in Ferndown a number of businesses have joined the ‘Use our Loo’ scheme as part of a FERNDOWN initiative to become a dementia friendly town. The aim is to understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action thus making life a little bit easier or services a bit more accessible to someone living with dementia. To date in Ferndown Costa Coffee, The Ferndown Library, Ferndown British Legion and the Nightjar public house have joined the ‘Use Our Loo’ scheme. For information on how to join the scheme please email harryworth@live.co.uk To see other projects to make Ferndown a dementia friendly town, please visit www.fdft.org.uk

Ferndown Rocks

Final of Live: Ferndown 2017 Twelve Bands, Groups, Duos and Single Artists battled it out on Saturday 8th April for the title of ‘The Voice of Ferndown 2017’. Hosted at the Barrington Centre, a packed house was entertained by Amie Knight whilst the Judges made their minds up, after all twelve acts had sung, and Judges had commented. A total of six prizes made the night very interesting, and the event was brilliantly compered by Chris ‘Chrissyferkin’ Daines. Four Judges led by Brian Oliver of Basement Studios assessed artists

ranging from Issy Apperley at 13, to a four piece Rock Band, Draconem. The night started with fun from Matt Black Piano Man, and organiser Steve Lugg said, “Once again the quality of these lovely talented folk has been first-class, and I could have made a case for individuals to win, who were not even placed – the quality was so high and so even! We are already taking entries for 2018, just get on the web, like our Facebook page at Live: Ferndown, and send us a message.”

Ferndown’s Lengthsman I would like to introduce Mel Foxhall who joined Ferndown Town Council last October taking on the Lengthsman role for the town. He is a family man with four children and has been living in Dorset for more than 25 years and knows the area well. He came to this job after recently spending time working for a tree surgery firm. Previous to that Mel had worked in IT for many years and when he felt it was time for a change of direction he took the leap and started an environmental conservation apprenticeship. He has also worked for the RSPB where there was a great emphasis placed on Heathland conservation. Mel can honestly say that this change of direction has changed his attitude to life. The term Lengthsman, coined in the 1700s, originally referred to someone who kept a “length” of road neat and tidy. Today, in our modern era the role has been adapted to cater for the changing needs of the

modern town. The role places a great emphasis on improving the environment within our local community areas. Mel has spent the winter working in and around Ferndown where he has been involved in sorting and tidying up the planters on Victoria Road, Sainsbury’s Roundabout and Tricketts Cross Roundabout. The job also involved litter picking particularly along Ringwood Road and Wimborne Road and Mel regularly changes the notices keeping the notice boards up to date. He also works at West Moors for two mornings a week. His time there is primarily involved in checking on the playground, updating notice boards, hedge cutting and litter picking. The Town Council contracts the Lengthman to the Ferndown and Uddens Business Improvement District (BID) one day a week in order to mitigate the cost of the Lengthsman on the residents of Ferndown. During the summer the focus will

be on greenery particularly the planters that we have located around Ferndown. We have received many complimentary comments regarding the planters situated around the town. During the warmer months, Mel also spends time cutting back overgrown plants on pathways and will work at the allotments, hedge cutting and strimming. Mel says he really enjoys working with a great team. If you see him around Ferndown say ‘hi’.
