Ferndown Town Centre Strategy Plan

F

ollowing the recently approved Town Centre Strategy for Ferndown, the Town and District Councils, now joined by Dorset County Council, are working on proposals for the delivery of a number of key projects aimed at breathing new life in to the Town Centre. An initial list of 7 projects have been identified for further investigation and the first meeting of the 3 Councils overseeing the implementation work recently took place to agree priorities and make sure the local community, businesses and local organisations are kept involved and informed. Chairman of the implementation group Cllr Mike Dyer from East Dorset District Council said: “There was overwhelming support from the public for the proposals in the strategy and the job now is to get on and implement them. We are keen to develop some more detailed proposals on individual projects and check that the public, local

4

businesses and organisations still support them”. As well as distributing information about the strategy in the local area there are also plans to set up a stakeholder group in order to ensure there is a regular dialogue between the Councils and the various interests in the Town. Although it is anticipated that some of the larger projects may take a number of years to be developed, some immediate work will be undertaken to help improve the support for local shops and businesses in the Town Centre and create a more positive message about what the town has to offer. The Ferndown Town Centre Strategy is available electronically on the Dorset For You and Ferndown Town Council websites. Hard copies are also available from the Ferndown Town Council offices (located in the Barrington Centre, Ferndown) and Ferndown Library.

New Councillors – Ian Flay and Stephen Drinkall

S

tephen Drinkall is a local Dorset man and has lived in the Ferndown/ Wimborne area since the 1970’s, attending Poole Grammar School completing his A Levels there. He’s always had a passion for learning and is currently studying for a Masters in Software Development. He also studied Electronics at Southampton University and Electronic Engineering at Bournemouth University. He has been working in the electronics industry contracting throughout Dorset. For eight of those years he worked in the aerospace industry and a further three years in the marine industry. He is now learning how to design 3D graphics for the simulator and games industries. Stephen decided to stand as a councillor because he felt that he could contribute towards the team improving the local area of Ferndown. He is also interested in the issues associated with

fly-tipping which affects the area in and around Ferndown. As a youngster he attended local youth clubs and feels that he can contribute positively towards facilities for the youth community. Stephen was diagnosed with schizophrenia eleven years ago and now works alongside charities working with mental health institutes. He has come to know the charity ‘Rethink’ and their work at the Recovery House in Weymouth and feels there is a need for something similar in East Dorset. There is a treatment centre - Hahnemann House located in Bournemouth providing day care only, due to the pressure on NHS resources. He is interested in the mental health courses offered by the Mental Health Forum (Dorchester) as Stephen is looking to become a peer specialist in mental health issues. As part of this process Stephen spends time talking in group settings within those hospital

wards covering mental health issues in Dorset. He helps out on Monday mornings at the Heatherlands centre where people meet, drink coffee and discuss any issues they are facing on the Heatherlands estate. Topics discussed include dropped kerbs, littering and who’s getting the biscuits next week. He is looking forward to serving Ferndown and the Central Ward residents during this coming term.

in Ferndown. He married a local girl, Lesley, and they have two grown up daughters. His great grandparents, on his mother’s side used to own a farm which has now become the Angel pub. The family operated a dairy farm and delivered milk locally in Ferndown. With a close affinity for the land, Ian combines his business Ferndown Commercials Ltd with cattle and sheep farming. He specialises in keeping Ruby Red Devon cattle. So why did Ian want to join the council? He is interested in environmental issues and particularly the way companies and people treat the environment. He was challenged by his father after stopping along the road at White Sheet Common, Holt and picking up the litter for the umpteenth

time. Complaining about the litter the response was ‘OK, rather than keep on moaning about it, get on and do something about it’. When the opportunity arose to stand for one of the council positions Ian applied. He already has experience of being on a council as he has been the Treasurer for the Isuzu Truck Dealer Council for 20 years. Since the Town Council’s Environment Committee is oversubscribed, Ian was given the opportunity to become a member on the Planning Committee and the Youth Services Committee. He’s learning and coming up to speed on planning and is hoping to attend further training at East Dorset District Council. He is looking forward to speaking up for the Ferndown community.

I am very much looking forward to meeting as many community groups as I can. It is an exciting time for the town with a number of key projects being implemented such as the redevelopment of King George V Recreation Ground and to take forward the proposals to re-open the town’s youth centre. T

he ‘Fete on the Field’ at KGV playing fields was a tremendous success this year with the weather playing its part. The day started with live entertainment from the bandstand at 11:00am. We had the Town Crier Mike Andrews calling everyone to the 10k and 5k races with the Mayor Cathy Lugg blowing the starter air horn for the races to commence. There were so many things going on during the day from the martial arts displays, the dog show and petting zoo, the BlackSheep Ceilidh Band performing on stage, the guides, brownies and rainbows and Parley First School singing several popular songs, a huge array of model aeroplanes on the lower field with flights viewable overhead, the Classic Car show with a variety of cars from several decades to view. The featured event – the John Thornton Inaugural Pram Race was particularly fun to watch (and take part in) – the Mad Max teams have said they will be back next year! The Thunderbirds team manned by the Marines crew came first followed by the Ferndown Upper School teacher’s team. There were plenty of stalls to browse with several food stalls to satisfy anyone’s taste buds and a beer tent to quench parched throats. Several

12

local organisations were represented and the local churches had craft and story tents for families to visit. The Rotary Club pulled together an excellent organising team! It was good to see so many people and organisations working together and it reflects in a very positive way on the life of our town. The event raised funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

Potato

M

ayor Cathy Lugg opened the Potato Pants festival with organiser Ian Bennett at High Mead Farm. It was the second time that the festival has taken place with the space being made available by High Mead Farm. The support group HSP (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia) with Ian developing the original idea came together to run this fun event raising money for the support group. Where has the name

Festival

Potato Pants been coined from? The effects of HSP can be described as running with a sack of potatoes down the legs of your trousers, which several people demonstrated during the races in the afternoon. It was a great community event with several bands playing throughout the afternoon and evening, interspersed with witty dialogue to the sound of the piano by Matt Black. I’m sure we will see them again next year!

Zipwire

Challenge

Ferndown Mayor, Caty Lugg, offically opened The Zip Wire Challenge, at St. Mary’s Church, Ferndown. On a Saturday morning in early July, the town crier Mike Andrews called everyone together to listen to Ferndown Mayor Cathy Lugg officially open the Zip Wire Challenge which took place at St. Mary’s Church, Ferndown. First down the wire was the Deputy Mayor Steve Lugg dressed as Superman followed ‘hot on the wire’ by Project Manager Susan Sutherland from The Bus Stop Club. Throughout the day several team members from the Bus Stop Club took part, as well as Councillor Terry Cordery, Barrington Centre Manager Andy Bryant and several local people, one whom came dressed as a 1980’s free spirited lady. The challenge was in aid of ‘The Bus Stop Club’ based at the Turbary Resource Centre on the Heatherlands Estate, who support local families and 18

vulnerable adults from Ferndown and further afield. Susan Sutherland said “It was a glorious day for the event and we thank everyone who stepped over the tower edge and zipped down the wire. Many thanks also go to everyone who raised money through sponsorship which will help fund the many projects we aim to continue running at the centre.” Photos courtesy of

Ferndown in Bloom – ‘asks a busy person’ Linda Voisey, who has previously entered Ferndown in Bloom, has kindly agreed to be this year’s Competition Organiser.

L

inda is a very active retiree, and could say she doesn’t have the time. But supporting the community is important to her as evidenced already in organising neighbourhood watch. She says she is not a person to be ‘up at the front’. So, being the main judge for this year’s competition is hopefully going to be enjoyable, especially as Linda loves being outside and gardening. (Another behind the scenes ‘claim to fame’ was running the Princess of Wales’ fan club until not very long ago!) Linda’s favourite TV gardener is Pippa Greenwood (and Alan Titchmarsh for his humour) and Stourhead is her favourite public gardens. She likes structure but not necessarily formal structure. Are you entering Ferndown in Bloom this year? If you have an attractive front garden you are supporting Ferndown to be seen as a beautiful place to live. We would love you to enter. (Entry forms are available at Haskins and other places in June.) If you know others who are similarly supportive, please encourage them to get ready to enter as well. Ferndown in Bloom has a reduced committee this year, so we are reducing the breadth of the competition. Best wishes to Jean Read, Lyn Ovens and Jane Glover who have all worked hard on the committee over the last few years and have now stepped down. (Enquiries from new potential members are always welcome).

Ferndown and District Horticultural Association

I

n April, Ferndown and District Horticultural Association (FDHA) held its Spring Show in Ferndown’s Village Hall. We had a fantastic show with lots of entries - 265 to be precise and best of all 34 of these were from children. We have created a booklet specifically for children showing them how to engage in gardening. One of our aims was to encourage more children to enter our summer show which was held in June. It was free to enter with all children going away with something and the adults receiving prize cards and cups. Our Society meets every 2nd Friday of the month in the Village Hall, Church Road, Ferndown at 7.30pm with speakers on a variety of subjects. It’s £8 to join for the year and £2 if people just want to visit for that evening. Everyone is welcome to come along. We have a plant stall, books and a raffle. At half time we have tea and biscuits. We don’t meet in January or August, but in January we all meet for lunch at the Lodge in Longham - it’s a lovely get together after Christmas.

Our talks are on the Town Council website Ferndown.gov.uk under hobbies and leisure. Any further information can be obtained via email hudheylass@live,co.uk or telephone 07790 089889. Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council
