Ferndown Mayor 2018-2019 Cllr Steve Lugg was formally elected as Mayor of Ferndown on 21 May 2018 at the Annual Council Meeting of Ferndown Town Council. As the Mayor, he is the first citizen of Ferndown. In this role he acts as an ambassador for the Town, who serves, represents and leads the community. The Mayor also presides over Council meetings and is responsible for ensuring meetings are conducted properly. Steve is both proud and honoured to be the Mayor of Ferndown for 2018-19. He has been a Town Councillor since being elected by 13 votes at a contested by-election for Longham ward in October 2008, and over the last ten years has been Deputy Mayor three times. He has also been a District Councillor since 2011, being East Dorset District Council’s Chairman in 2015/16, and was elected to Dorset County Council in September 2016. Steve grew up in Sherborne, Dorset before joining the army at 16. After leaving the army at 40, his first job was running the Adult and Community budget at Bournemouth Social Services. He became Chief Executive in his current work role, based in Hampshire, in 2005. He is also a member of the Royal Household as a Yeoman of the Guard, of the Queen’s Bodyguard. Steve has lived locally for 21 years since returning from overseas in his military role, and is married to Cllr Mrs Cathy Lugg, whom has served local people in our library over the same period.

Steve and Cathy have five grown up children, with five grandchildren, which will become six shortly! Steve loves live music and hill-walking. Both enjoy the family dog and time on their allotment. Steve has always been fully involved in our local community. Previously he has been Chairman of East Dorset Mencap, a School Governor at Ferndown Upper School, a trustee at the Barrington Centre, and is currently President of the Ferndown Royal British Legion. Both Steve and Cathy recently gave up their roles as foster carers. Steve’s priority for the year is meeting local people, and engaging with younger people. Steve would like to see a diverse range of independent residents standing for the town elections in May 2019. The charities Cllr Steve Lugg shall be supporting are Mission4Water, Ferndown Royal British Legion and CEIL (Centre for Excellence in Industrial Liaison). Photos curtesy of Tom Scrase

Soldiers “Adopt a Tommy” - The 19141918 World War will never be forgotten, nor will the men and women who so bravely gave their lives. This year Ferndown Town Council and the Royal British Legion have been working hard to ensure that the town marks the centenary of WW1 with respect and style with a full programme of events in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday on 11 November. You may have seen several “Silent Soldiers” placed around the town in reverence to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The near life-size silhouettes of a World War 1 “Tommy” have been placed on verges, in Penny’s Walk and outside the Royal British Legion in Church Road in remembrance of those in the armed forces who came home “silently” from the war, or who never made it home. The Soldiers

will remain in place until after Remembrance Sunday and we would like to ensure that they stay in good condition during the year; we are therefore asking for residents to “Adopt a Tommy”. All we need is a resident/residents living near a Silent Soldier, to cut the grass around the base and report any damage or vandalism. If you are interested in looking after a Tommy near you, please contact the Town Council on 01202 892249.

KGV Improvements

Phase one of the KGV improvements encompassing the car parks has been completed - the car parks are now fully open with additional parking in Peter Grant Way opposite the Ferndown middle school. Parking within the KGV grounds will cater for mini-buses and vans when events such as tournaments take place throughout the year. 4

The Mayor’s Annual Civic Service Tuesday 19 June 2018

On a delightful Tuesday evening, civic dignitaries, Town Councillors and members of Ferndown’s community came together to celebrate the coming year for Mayor Cllr Steve Lugg at the Annual Civic Service held at St Mary’s Church. Mayor Steve thanked everyone for their support and was overwhelmed to see so many people in attendance which included fellow members of the ‘Chain Gang’, representatives from Ferndown Royal British Legion, members of 1st Ferndown Cubs and Beavers, 1st Heatherlands Scout Group and Ferndown’s 2358 Squadron Air Cadets, to name but a few. The service was conducted by Rev Sarah Pix and Rev Patches Chabala, with readings from the Mayoress, Cllr Mrs Cathy Lugg, and Ian Jones, Head of Regional Community Partnerships at Bournemouth University. The service paid homage to those who devote so much of their time and energy voluntarily helping others - the Town’s local heroes! Also, including Sue Morgan from Mission4Water speaking about the water project based in Uganda. A collection was made on behalf of the Mayor’s chosen charities: Ferndown Royal British Legion, Ferndown Upper School’s Centre for Excellence in Industrial Liaison (sponsored by John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation) and Mission4Water. After the service, everyone enjoyed light refreshments in the church’s Beacon Café on what was a beautiful summer’s evening. The Ferndown Conversation Over 85 attendees from 67 organisations came together earlier this year to take part in an innovative event with the Ferndown community at its heart. ‘The Ferndown Conversation’ saw a wide variety of groups, including churches, local authorities, local businesses, special interest and voluntary groups participating in a ‘round the table’ conversation to discuss the issues faced by Ferndown’s community and make suggestions for improving the town’s services and resources. Representatives from Public Health Dorset, Ferndown Town Council, North & East Dorset Police and the Local Resilience Forum presented. Those attending broke into groups of 8-10 people to consider three questions - particularly relating to Community Safety, Health, Youth and Ageing. Everyone was asked “What are the issues or needs in each of the four key areas?”, “What projects could help?” and “What resources have we got?”

Steve Robinson, CEO of local charity PramaLIFE, the lead sponsor of the event, said: “It was a true delight to see so many people at the Ferndown Conversation this week. Such a wide range of backgrounds and experiences including statutory, charity and business perspectives coming together to hear the issues facing our community and discuss how we could rise to meet these challenges together.” ‘The Ferndown Conversation’ is coordinated by Poole based charity PramaLIFE and has received funding from The Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’. This is the first event of many; from this event numerous initiatives will be launched and a ‘Ferndown Conversation 2’ and even a ‘Ferndown Youth Conversation’ will be launched.

PRIZE TREE FOR FERNDOWN PARK The Royal British Legion Ferndown presented a prize-award tree to the Town to recognise the part played by the people of Ferndown in the Club’s achievement of winning second place in the Ian Hamilton Trophy out of the 458 RBL Clubs in the country. The young Hazel tree was presented to the Club by The Woodland Trust who manage the National Memorial Arboretum. The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Steve Lugg and his wife Cathy, the Lady Mayoress, accepted the tree from Michael Deane and Grant Parrott, Chairmen of the RBL Club and RBL Ferndown Branch and planted by them at the Millennium Garden on Peter Grant Way. The Mayor expressed his recognition of the work done by the Legion in the Ferndown community and his hope is that both the RBL and the new tree would continue to flourish for many years to come. “A POVERTY SECRET CAN BE A KILLER” THE ISOLATION and loneliness of living with a ‘poverty secret’ can be a killer, that’s the warning from a free East Dorset debt counselling service. The warning comes from Pam Ansell, who manages the East Dorset Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre based in Ferndown, after the charity published new research about effects of debt in the UK. Pam said: “It’s a twenty first century parable really. There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of people in Dorset, living in isolation with a poverty secret. The sad truth is they may live in the same street as us, but they’re suffering from extreme loneliness because of their debts.” “It means that they can’t provide for their children, don’t have enough food to eat or can’t heat their home. Tragically, it even makes some of them consider taking their own lives.” She added that CAP’s Client Report, published last month, found that almost a third of its clients considered taking their own life because of debt. The report also found that almost four in ten were afraid to leave their homes, three quarters were afraid to answer the telephone and eighty per cent were scared to open their post. Pam said: “People are created for community, they’re social beings, and the long term damage of living with loneliness can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” She said that the common reasons for debt include low income, relationship breakdown, joblessness, problems with benefits, illness and bereavement. The East Dorset CAP Debt Centre visits every client in their own home, working with each until they become debt free, while CAP’s head office specialists negotiate with creditors, create a budget and provide ongoing technical support. Pam said: “If your finances are out of control, please give us a call today and let us help you get your life back on track.”

Thank you from Amberwood House A big thank you goes to last year’s Mayor Cathy Lugg from the Ferndown Amberwood House residents and team. As last year’s Mayor Cathy Lugg received a big ‘thank you’ for attending their Easter Fayre on Saturday 31st March. The residents really enjoyed meeting Cathy and her lovely granddaughter and they were delighted to be able to say that they raised nearly £180 for their charities, Macmillan Caring Locally and Caring Canines. Macmillan also raised an extra £35, so over £200 in total was raised. It was a fun and enjoyable day had by all.

Live Ferndown

Winners

Saturday, 21st April saw 12 live acts battle it out at the Barrington Centre, Ferndown for the coveted title of 2018 Champions after a winter season of semi-finals. The event was organised by Cllr Steve Lugg, in partnership with Pramacare, the Forest Inn and Chris Collins. The five judges Brian Oliver, Helena Mace, Matt Black, Samantha Laurilla and Ben Bennett looked, listened and judged each performance for quality of musicianship, stagecraft and that essential ‘Wow’ factor. Matt Black said, “Of the bands, duos and solo performers who performed during the evening on the stage, Bel Evans’ voice helped her land her first prize, with a highly professional performance which demonstrated huge talent in many areas – including accompaniment and original music.”

Ferndown’s Mayoral Volunteer Awards 2018 Last year the Mayor hosted the Mayoral Volunteer Awards and was astounded by the amount of applications that were received from members of the public putting forward individuals who they recognised as being selfless volunteer workers within Ferndown. The Awards are the Mayor’s way of thanking exceptional people and groups for the incredible work they do within the community. It is an opportunity for Ferndown to officially recognise the commitment and hard work of those who strive to make a positive difference to the lives of others and demonstrate outstanding citizenship. Similarly to last year, the awards will be split into three categories: • Ferndown’s Community Champion • Ferndown’s Youth Hero (18 years and under) • Ferndown’s Voluntary Group Award The Mayors Volunteer Awards are being generously supported by Xerocad Print Centre. Ferndown Mayor, Cllr Steve Lugg says “Last year we really struggled to decide upon the

winners and runners up for the Volunteer Awards as so many exceptional people and groups were put forward. I’m looking forward to receiving nominations this year and to feel pride in reading about all the wonderful ways these individuals have provided so much for our community. The Awards will be presented at my Christmas Reception on Thursday 20th December 2018. All are invited to attend and enjoy some Christmas festivities and to celebrate the chosen winners and their outstanding work.” Nominations will be accepted from 18 June 2018 and will close on 21 November 2018. Nomination forms will be available via Ferndown Town Council’s website www.ferndown.gov.uk where the form can be downloaded. Otherwise, paper copies of the form will also be available from the Town Council’s offices at The Barrington Centre, Penny’s Walk, Ferndown, BH22 9TH. Mayor of Ferndown’s Charity Spring Dinner Dance

On Saturday 28th April, the Worshipful the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Cathy Lugg hosted her final charity event for her Mayoral Year. It was clear the event was going to be a fabulous evening from the outset as tickets flew out of the council office as soon as they were advertised. With the international singer, Helena Mace, booked to perform and the Forest Inn’s brand new Garden Room hosting the event, the night looked to be a memorable one. The evening certainly didn’t disappoint. The Garden Room looked incredible and each table came beautifully presented which added a touch of class to the already enchanting venue. The Mayor said “I was so pleased to welcome local Mayors and dignitaries for my final charity event and was overwhelmed with the wonderful donations guests made towards my chosen charity, Ferndown Wheels Park. We raised over £600.00 in total. The food served by the Forest Inn was incredible and Helena Mace performed magnificently which encouraged guests, including myself and Steve, to get up and enjoy a dance!” Guests enjoyed a three course meal and the Forest Inn had thoughtfully taken into account certain guests allergy requirements to ensure they were provided with an equally delicious meal. 20

The evening continued with the Mayor drawing the raffle and guests winning gifts generously donated by local Ferndown Businesses. Helena Mace concluded the evening with a wonderful performance whilst guests danced the night away until the arrival of their carriages. The evening was certainly a memorable event and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The Mayor of Ferndown, Cathy Lugg, would like to thank everybody that attended and made the evening so enjoyable; Tom Scrase for his amazing photography, The Forest Inn for the fabulous food, Helena Mace for her time and performance and finally the staff at the Town Council who organised and coordinated the evening to make it that extra bit special.

Ferndown, Stour and Forest Trail Ferndown Town Council is consulting on proposals to make changes to the 10 mile walk known as Ferndown, Stour and Forest Trail. It is proposed that in order to avoid Stapehill Road the existing route should be redirected to Foxs Lane, on to Wimborne Road and up to the old railway line. The existing Cannon Hill

to Uddens route is notorious for being water logged and overgrown making the route in-passable at times. It is therefore proposed to re-route this part of the walk along Plantation Road. The Council is required to consult on any proposed changes; the views of local residents are considered to be important in this matter.

You may respond to the consultation by email to: customerservices@ferndown.gov.uk By telephone: 01202 892249. By visiting our offices at: Ferndown Town Council The Barrington Centre Pennys Walk BH22 9TH

FERNDOWN

Summer Fete 2018

Right in the heart of Ferndown our traditional ‘fete on the field’ event took place in June. The Fete was opened by the Mayor, Cllr Steve Lugg and Mayoress – Cllr Cathy Lugg. It’s our biggest public event, held outdoors and organised to raise funds for local charities. The event looked bigger and was a bolder celebration of what we bring together involving the community in Ferndown. One of the larger towns in Dorset – the event never fails to please. There was a fun, friendly vibe at the fete where people didn’t have to worry about getting hungry during the day; the fete provided the usual summer seasonal food with great eating experiences and the music lovers were able to hear various artists on the main stage throughout the day. This year the fun fair came to town and joined the festive celebration on KGV playing fields. There were numerous rides and attractions and judging from the comments people made, it was a big pull for the youngsters in the area.

Well over 2,500 people joined us for the day of celebration 28

Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council

For the third year running the John Thornton pram race took place. The numbers of people registered for the 10K & 5K races exceeded expectations. A very large crowd saw the runners begin the race in the late morning to the sound of an air horn started by the Mayor Cllr Steve Lugg. Captured on photo are the 1st, 2nd & 3rd placed runners from the ladies 5K race – Sharon Hutchings, Sarah Orr and Kirsty Weston and James Baker second in the 5K race receiving his prize from the Deputy Mayor, Jean Read who had the honour of giving out the prizes to the race winners and runners up.

Well over 2,500 people joined us for the day of celebration. For children of all ages there were amusing games of chance, tombola, guess the number of sweets in a jar, Kids Olympics and chubby the magician and one of my favourites, the John Thornton Pram Race – so much fun to watch.

Add in the cake stalls, various raffles, arts, crafts and community groups, held together with music, displays from the Ferndown Jitsu Club, Parley First School Choir and the Ferndown Upper School Band. Of course, let’s not forget the beer and tea tents when you need a rest from all the excitement and really, there was something there for everyone. We would like to thank the entire community for so generously supporting our summer fete this year. Special thanks go to the Rotary Club, Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council and all the enthusiastic volunteers who gave up large amounts of time and often physical energy preparing for the event, helping on the day and ultimately fund raising for local causes.
