FERNDOWN PAST AND PRESENT – KEY FACTS Ferndown is the largest settlement in the East Dorset District Council area with a population of some 18,090 (2009 mid year estimate). Up to 1925 the Ordnance Survey Maps recorded the settlement here as Fern Down. The early history of the town in the mid 19th Century owes a lot to the Stewart family and their commercial business dealing with plants and seeds etc. The countryside in the early days was mainly heathland, both wet and dry and whilst much of this has disappeared under development there are still tracts of open land. Ferndown Common was registered as a Town Green in 2003 and is used by the public for recreation purposes. Slop Bog which is on the outskirts of the town is a local nature reserve. Ferndown is situated within easy reach of the sea at Bournemouth, the New Forest at Ringwood and Burley and the ancient boroughs of Poole and Christchurch. It is well positioned near to the A31 Trunk Road with good access to other parts of the county. The town is also in close proximity to Bournemouth Airport. At 2010 the town had some 91 shops mainly local but include nationals such as
Boots, Iceland, Wilkinsons, Sainsbury and Tesco. The catchment population for the town is around 28,100. The total number of people working in the town is approximately 11,600 with around 1,300 firms (excluding the self employed). There are a number of Industrial Estates within the town such as Ferndown Industrial Estate (45.0 h), Uddens Trading Estate (4.3h) and East Dorset Trade Park (13.5h). Ferndown is a very popular place to live and average house prices in September 2009 were £324,068 for detached properties, £219,342 for semi detached, £169,562 for terraced and £175,261 for flats / maisonettes. There are a large number of community groups who operate throughout the town. There are several playing fields within the town as well as a Leisure Centre which provides a extensive range of facilities. There are two Championship Golf Courses within town, Ferndown Golf Club and Dudsbury Golf Club. FERNDOWN Official Guide 5

LOCAL GOVERNMENT Major changes in local government were introduced in England and Wales in 1974 which created two tiers of local authorities (County and District Councils) together with minor authorities called Town and Parish councils. Each local authority has different functions although some functions can be carried out by joint bodies. Generally the allocation of functions is as follows;County Councils: Education; strategic planning; traffic, transport and highways; fire service; consumer protection; refuse disposal; social care, libraries. District Councils: Local Planning; housing; highways (maintenance of certain urban roads and off street car parks); building regulations; environmental health; refuse collection, cemeteries and crematoria; collection of council tax and non domestic rates; calculation and payment of Housing and Council Tax Benefit. The relevant authorities within Ferndown are Dorset County Council and East Dorset District Council. Currently the collection and disposal of refuse is dealt with by a joint body called the Dorset Waste Partnership. Dorset is proud of its recycling efforts over the years such that currently just short of 60% of refuse is recycled. The Town Council covers the main community of Ferndown together with the communities at Longham, Hampreston, Little Canford, Stapehill and Heatherlands. There are 23 Town Councillors who serve for 4 years. Meetings of the Town Council and its Committees are normally open to the public. The Town Council has a Planning Committee which makes observations to the District Council on all Ferndown Planning Applications; an Environment Committee which is responsible for the maintenance and improvements of the Ford Lane Recreation Ground and associated Play Areas within Heatherlands, to provide additional street furniture and lighting where appropriate and maintain items currently under the control of the Town Council, to help keep the town clean and tidy by making use of the services of a Town Lengthman, to work with other bodies to promote the town attractions / facilities, to monitor conservation areas and issues etc.; a Grants Committee which provides financial support for voluntary and charitable organisations
within the town working with children, the elderly, arts projects etc.; a Finance and General Purposes Committee which deals with all matters concerning administration and general management of the council and its financial responsibilities. The Town Council is also Sole Trustee of the King George’s Fields Charity which is responsible for some 50 acres of land which is used for playing fields. Sports available include 6 tennis courts, a bowling green, a cricket square, a skate park, and 4 football pitches. The Charity hopes to increase the facilities to provide two multi sports use pitches for 5 a side football, basketball and additional skate park facilities. A Children’s Play Park is also included on the site for all children whatever their level of ability or disability. The Council Offices are open Monday to Thursday from 0900 to 1600hrs and from 0900 to 1530hrs on a Friday.
