JAZZ BY THE SEA FESTIVAL 2017 A WONDERFUL WEEK OF JAZZ BY THE SEA IN 2017. Welcome to Jazz by the Sea Festival 2107 and a week of world class jazz across Bournemouth and Poole.
T
his year we have chosen a programme of jazz that we think will appeal to all. From the scintillating sounds of the Swing era brought to you by Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra to the Afro Reggae beats of the Caribbean, courtesy of Soothsayers and just about everything jazzy in between! Not only have we broadened the appeal but we have increased the size and scope of the festival. There are a multitude of venues along our coastal strip, from Southbourne in the East to Sandbanks in the West featuring some of the finest Jazz on some of the finest beaches on the South Coast! New this year, our Jazzmobile, brings live jazz music to public venues near you and the ‘Dorset Queen Jazz Machine, a 1920’s passenger boat playing trad jazz whilst cruising Poole Harbour. Returning after the success of last year, our World Jazz Jamboree features international jazz stars from around the world.
The headline opening concert features BBC Radio 2’s Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra who presents an evening of popular jazz music from the Great English and American Songbook. As the UK’s Queen of Swing, Clare’s family concerts are renowned for their energetic exuberance and high class entertainment. Also appearing during the week, well known British jazz funk band, The James Taylor Quartet and the internationally recognised acid jazz band, Incognito. One of the highlights of the Festival week is an evening of Blues and Boogie presented by Jazz FM at Lighthouse featuring accomplished guitarist Mark Harrison and international pianist Dino Baptiste plus Zoe Schwarz and the Blue Commotion Band. To round off a week of fine jazz, the ‘World Jazz Jamboree’ introduces world class jazz music this year from Europe, Brazil, Africa, Cuba and the Caribbean. and social media pages which are constantly being updated. So, we hope there is something for all jazz lovers! So do come and support us! The Sunday evening’s programme contains a rich repertoire of popular music that explores timeless jazz classics from the great English and American songbook.

The Pedigree Hot 5 was formed in 2013 to celebrate the glorious days in British Jazz history when traditional jazz bands were filling the dance halls and jazz clubs across the country. A number of live recordings were made and played regularly on the radio and many reached the hit parade in the late 1950’s and 60’s. The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. The 12 piece band was founded by Paul “Tubbs” Williams & Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick in the 1970’s and has enjoyed a number of successes over the years including “Always There”, featuring Jocelyn Brown, which made No. 6 in the UK and the hit single ”Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing” which became a club anthem and a global phenomenon. LOCAL MUSICIANS TOM GWYTHER GROUP PROHIBITION JAZZ Tom Gwyther’s WITH TONY WALLER continental style Jazz Quartet plays a mixture of soul jazz fusion music with intricate melodies, smooth grooves and fascinating rhythm. He will be appearing at regular intervals throughout the Jazz by the Sea Festival on tour with the Jazzmobile.
BOURNE VALLEY JEMZ
Bourne Valley Jemz is led by Steve Hayes who has spent his life as a professional trombonist playing for the likes of Matt Munro, Shirley Bassey and Vera Lynn. He has also worked with many of the best-known Big Bands - Syd Lawrence, Glenn Miller UK and the Jules Holland R&B orchestra. The band plays a BBQ brunch at The Plantation in Canford Cliffs Sunday 11th June.
Prohibition Jazz is the brainchild of trumpet player Tony Waller and includes some of the south’s top professional jazz musicians performing music from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. Audience involvement, and the high standard of musicianship guarantee a memorable evening at The Barrington Theatre, Ferndown on Friday 16th June.

Rachel More performs a mixture of cool sophisticated jazz standards, swing, blues and bossa nova favourites. Rachel appears at Cliff House Hotel on Sunday 11th, at the Brewhouse & Kitchen in Bournemouth on Wed 14th and with Wendy Allen as Mojito at La Tasca on Thursday 15th June.

Bomo Swing the local high energy, multi-cultural band specialising in a melting pot of favourite world music styles guaranteed to get everyone in the festival mood. Think reggae, Balkan swing, gypsy, dance fusion all powered by a sizzling Latin percussion section and performed with a deep passion and commitment to create a night to remember. A mainstay of Bournemouth’s jazz scene, Ian Ellis hails from London. His husky tenor saxophone has featured on tours and studio recordings. He will be playing at Dean Park Inn on Monday 12th June in a Jazz jam session with special guests.
ZOE SCHWARZ
A dynamic and distinctive jazzy blues sound from this award winning singer based in Poole. Zoe Schwarz is considered one of the best female blues singers in the UK and we are delighted to see her perform with her guitar playing husband Rob Koral in the Festival again this year. Catch her in the Sherling Studio at the Lighthouse for the Jazz FM Blues and Boogie night on Thursday 15th with her Blue Commotion Band or at Cafe Rouge and The Grove Tavern on Saturday 17th June.
VERONIQUE JOLY
In her exploration of French songs, Véronique Joly will be revisiting her French heritage, presenting fresh arrangements of some classic “chansons” and introducing some new numbers performed with her husband, jazz guitarist Rob Palmer. Hear them perform at Cliff House Hotel on Sunday 11th or at The Guildhall Tavern on Wednesday 14th June.

Many beautiful love songs have been written in all sorts of genres. Singer Julie Dunn presents her collection of favourite vocal standards from Ella Fitzgerald & Frank Sinatra to Imelda May at The Shelley Theatre on Friday 16th June. For lovers of music and romance, an evening not to be missed!
THE BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY BIG BAND
enjoys a fine reputation. Under the direction of experienced bandleader Steve Hayes, the band boasts a broad and challenging repertoire. This year they are putting on a special evening of entertainment at the Summer Showcase Extravaganza for the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Bournemouth Accommodation and Hotel Association at the Citygate Centre on Thursday 15th June.

When not performing ambient jazz, Revolution Club’s guitarist and composer, Dave Carson works in the studio producing other artists. This year at the Festival they will be playing a selection of their own original material in the Koh Lounge at various times through the week.

The Bournemouth Rat Pack, a celebrated local 8 piece band playing Swing, Latin and Retro Pop made famous by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Junior. It’s not all Frank, but it’s fun. Come fly with them at The Cumberland Hotel on Friday 16th June.
MUSIQUE A TROIS
A feast of vintage and modern Gypsy Jazz, Swing, Tango and French Chansons including classics by Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour arranged in their own unique style by Musique a Trois and sung by Bethany Jameson. See them perform at The Hotel du Vin on Thursday 15th June.

Hope Schachter is a talented local pianist and songwriter, who combines her skills with vocalist, Gina Thomas to create The New Flowers Duo. Andy Urquhart is one of the leading jazz trumpeters in the south of England and we are fortunate that he can join us again at the Jazz by the Sea Festival. Andy has played with the likes of Gilad Atzmon, Liane Carroll and Ian Shaw and plays this year with his own group in the Jazz Cafe at Sandbanks beach on Sunday 11th June.
SARAH BOLTER
Popular local tenor sax player, Sarah Bolter runs her own jazz ensemble and can be seen at The Miramar Hotel on Sunday 11th June playing an afternoon of Gin and Jazz and with Tina May at WestBeach on Thursday 15th June. Playing this year with Tina and Sarah for the Jazz festival will also be Phil Doyle, from the Joe Loss Orchestra, on piano and Pete Maxfield on double bass.
YOUNG MUSICIANS Following the success of last year’s JAZZFACTOR Music Competition for young musicians, the Jazz by the Sea Festival launched a showcase event for local schools at Bournemouth University earlier this year. We are delighted to announce the Queen

Elizabeth’s Upper School Jazz Orchestra in Wimborne have been selected to play at the Lighthouse Poole on Sunday 11th June as part of an evening’s programme of family Jazz with Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra. The 18 piece school band will be performing at 7pm in the upstairs foyer ahead of the concert at 7.30pm. Come and listen to our young musicians of the future!

JAZZ ON THE MOVE JAZZMOBILE DORSET QUEEN JAZZ CRUISE Jazz by the Sea Festival introduces a new approach to jazz. The purpose built Abacus JAZZMOBILE - a mobile music platform based on a 3.5 ton truck that can drive, park and play live jazz at multiple locations across Bournemouth and Poole featuring the Tom Gwyther Trio, Andy Urqhart and the Revolution Club Band with guest singer Penny Humphries.

HOTELS, CLUBS, BARS, PUBS, RESTAURANTS THE KOH GROUP URBAN GUILD WESTBEACH The Koh Group have proudly joined forces with the Jazz By The Sea Festival and are showcasing their beautiful and newly opened event space, Koh Lounge on Poole Hill, Bournemouth, as the festival HQ and host venue for the whole week and the original Koh Thai Tapas restaurant in Boscombe features live music early in the week. The Koh Group was born locally to revolutionise the dining experience, with tapas style dining, zesty cocktails, first class service and a careful attention to detail all tied together in the buzzing atmosphere of Koh. Whilst The Koh Group continues to grow across the South, their roots stay firmly in Dorset and they are delighted to be taking part in the 2017 Jazz Festival for the first time.
Pop into Koh Boscombe for their legendary tapas and sit down dining with music from RP3, Sharp 9 Duo and Goodfoot. WestBeach are very excited to be hosting this event with legendary Jazz singer Tina May. She is making a special appearance here during the Jazz by the Sea Festival week and will be taking diners on a journey through her favourite songs. Tina was one of the headline acts at last year’s Jazz Festival and it was an amazing evening. If you like jazz, this is a definite date for your diary. Jazz Nights are free to diners. The music starts at 7pm and continues until 9pm, while you feast on the delicious menu and extensive selection from their specials board.

Canvas was voted Bournemouth’s Best Night Out 2017 by Bournemouth Tourism. Dedicated to putting on big names, the Canvas Jazz Festival line up is second to none this year with the celebrated British jazz/soul/funk band, Incognito getting Up, Close & Personal on Wednesday 14th and Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B spinning the discs on Friday 16th. Mr Kyps Live Music Venue has been a cornerstone of live music culture in Bournemouth and Poole for many years and has become a regular fixture for UK touring bands. With room for 300 spectators and unrestricted views throughout, Mr Kyps has one of the most impressive concert venues on the South coast with a perfect atmosphere for the appreciation of live music. We are delighted The James Taylor Quartet will be playing there on Friday 16th June.
SHELLEY THEATRE
The Shelley Theatre is a small intimate theatre built in 1860 by Percy Florence Shelley, son of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley, the writer of Frankenstein, who was a playwright. He used to perform his plays to the great and good of Bournemouth and raised considerable funds towards the Boscombe Hospital, Boscombe Pier and the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth. The current owners have been gradually restoring the theatre and it is now a vibrant community venue showing all genres of theatre, music and films. It has an excellent bar, stocking many local products and auditorium with comfortable seats originally from the 1920’s. Celebrated Jazz singer Julie Dunn will be playing there on Friday 16th June. It promises to be a great night out!

SUJC offers an eclectic programme of top quality jazz music every Wednesday evening at Parley Sports & Country Club. The club was originally founded by the Swing Unlimited Big Band Group, and proudly presents an unlimited diversity of jazz genres and musical talent, from piano trios up to full big bands performing all styles of jazz from trad to contemporary, funk, soul and fusion. Great food & drink is available and the friendly, welcoming atmosphere makes it a fun night out! The Dean Park Inn is a popular meeting point for local and visiting jazz lovers alike. Whether you fancy a sociable pint of Wadworth’s ale or a bite to eat from the fresh food menu, there’s something on offer for everyone. Monday night is the Inn’s popular Jazz night operated by FNUK and will be hosting Ian Ellis and friends on 12th June. A different band every week, with a host of fantastic jazz artists, including plenty of saxophone, trumpet and amazing vocals for your entertainment and delight with the bonus of being completely free of charge.

The Libertine is a specially crafted pub in the Heart of Westbourne, known for our juicy charcoal oven steaks and wood-fired pizzas. There is a cosy restaurant that caters for any occasion as well as a lively bar that serves local ales, craft beer and excellent wines. On Monday nights there’s a two for one deal on all wood-fired pizzas and on Tuesday take advantage of 35 day aged charcoal oven steaks at half the price. SIXTY MILLION POSTCARDS
60 Million Postcards was born in 2006 when the town’s post office ran out of space to keep all the returned mail and decided to create a bar to store them. If you count very carefully you can see them all on the wall. As part of this year’s Jazz by the Sea Festival, 60 Million Postcards presents a FREE SHOW on Thursday 15th June featuring Mutant Vinyl aka Edwin Pope who has been successfully cultivating his own musical genre over the past few years and makes a welcome visit with his latest music.
CHAPLINS CELLAR BAR
Chaplins is a unique music venue located in the heart of Boscombe. The venue plays host to original live music as well as poetry, comedy and theatre events. Decorated by interior designer Vivien Hoffman and a variety of local artists, Chaplins has been awarded a number of prestigious awards including holder of The Best Community Pub in the UK. It has earned an outstanding reputation at the centre of the Bournemouth Music Scene, encouraging popular local Bands and musicians. Chaplins are delighted to be hosting the Fox and the Owl, Bomo Swing and The Juke Box Gypsy Jazz Band as part of the Jazz by the Sea Festival this year.

Situated just behind Poole Quay in the heart of the Old Town, Hotel du Vin & Bistro offers the perfect combination of great location and renowned hospitality. For jazz fans, there’s something special with the Hotel Miramar’s ‘Gin and Jazz’ afternoon on Sunday 11th June with Sarah Bolter and her jazz ensemble playing cool jazz from 3pm.
