Welcome
Corfe Mullen Dementia Friendly Community
Dear friends,
Since the launch and creation of Corfe Mullen Dementia Friendly community we have come a long way since our first meeting some 9 years ago when we began to explore and produce action plans in relation to how we might grow Corfe Mullen as a dementia friendly community. It has been a long a journey, and often challenging, but these were our first steps towards that goal.
To that end I would like to appeal for your help in making this happen. If you feel you can contribute to this process, please do get back to me.
As a community we seek to journey with both the carer and the older person with dementia, allowing them to inform and shape a dementia friendly community, a community that is safe and non stigmatising. Aims
• To raise awareness and understanding of Dementia in the Corfe Mullen Community.
• To create a safe and non stigmatising community where older people with dementia can live well.
• To create an environment where the carer and or older person with dementia can seek appropriate help and support.
Achievements

Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town
Dementia
The very minimum requirement of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town Steering group, which is part of the larger Growing Compassionate Community charity, is to understand what it is like to live with dementia not only for those diagnosed, but for their carers too, and to try and help make life a little easier, or the services available more accessible.
It is essential to find out more from those with dementia, and their families and carers, about the experiences of living in our community, where they feel supported and where improvements can be made. This feedback can and will direct the actions of the steering group.
Please feel free to email me on michaeldeane1@hotmail.com with any comments, concerns or questions you may have. Moving forward, over the coming months, part of the groups objective is to raise money that will be spent locally in supporting carers and families of loved ones affected by this cruel disease. Please visit our Facebook page for regular updates on the fundraising events we have in place.

West Moors Dementia Action Group
I hope you are enjoying the new look and new layout of this community magazine with its broader remit. We, here in West Moors, continue to look for ways to support carers, those living with dementia and many others in the community.
The activities and support networks included in this publication are there for you and suitable for a wide range of people, whether it be feeling isolated or lonely, struggling as a carer or coming to terms with a dementia diagnosis, and much more. Be assured there is help and support available.
As human beings, we are sociable creatures. We were meant to be ‘in community’ in various ways. One of the biggest hurdles, especially when things are a bit tough, is getting out and socialising, being with other people. Yet it is more often than
not the best way to help ourselves, or to help others. To join a group and get to know others, whether that be a knit & natter, a memory lane, a sing-a-long or a man-shed; gardening, a health walk or simply attending a coffee morning or ‘cafe local’, and many others.
I was watching the ‘live stream’ of the British University Karting Championships the other day on YouTube. One of our grandsons was participating. After the first of his two races that day he sent me a text saying he felt he’d been held up by two other drivers but was pleased with his pace and hoped to do better in the next race. Life can be a bit like that. We can so easily feel a bit ‘held up’ or ‘held back’ by our circumstances, but it’s good to keep an eye out for the best way forward for ourselves or those we
What's on in West Moors
care for, and get back on course.
At this time of year, though it might still be a little chilly (early March), there is the promise of Spring and Summer just around the corner. The gardens and woodlands are beginning to spring into life and there’s the hope of brighter and warmer days. The hope of connecting with others, people we can chat with and listen to.
On behalf of the West Moors Group, I hope you will be encouraged to get out and try one or two of the activities or groups listed in the ‘What’s on’ pages. Have fun and enjoy the warmer days and summer sun.
Lynne
In West Moors there are lots of great activities to stimulate the body, mind and spirit.

Jolly Days
On a Jolly Day you can be as active or relaxed as you like. Various activities take place at our different venues. In Wimborne St Giles we meet for longer and start with a delicious homemade lunch cooked by The Friendly Food Club, this is then followed by a varied programme which can include live music, singing, quizzes, seated exercise, walks, painting and crafts. Once we get to know you, we can tailor your day to suit you. We always stop for tea and homemade cake at all our Jolly Days. At Blandford, Wimborne and Shaftesbury, we have less time together, but we have just as much fun with regular visits from musicians, writers and local craftspeople.
Rachel below has written about her fathers experience at our Jolly Days groups.
My name is Rachel.
I live in Broadstone, Dorset very close to my parents Howard and Marlene Moore.
In September 2016 my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
At the time my parents lived in Leicester where they had spent the majority of their lives.
Although I was able to travel to see them and help out quite often they began to struggle and it became necessary for us to make plans for them to move closer to my family and brother who lives near Fleet.
In August 2020 they relocated to an independent living apartment around the corner from us.
They love the beautiful county of Dorset and relished being in the company of other people of their age and with similar circumstances.
As time went on, I started to look out for somewhere I could take them to inspire and ensure stimulating and activitiessupport for mum and kindred spirits.
It was during a conversation with someone at The Leonardo Trust, Broadstone that I heard of the non-profit charity “In Jolly Good Company”.
We first attended a session held at The Priests House Museum Wimborne. Now known as The Museum of East Dorset (MED).
We were warmly welcomed by Sarah Rampton and her kind and attentive volunteers from In Jolly Good Company.
We had a session filled with live music from A Little bit of a Tonic. Colin on acoustic guitar and Clara with her delightful smile and bubbly personality sang old and newer songs encouraging us to join in.
We had tea and biscuits and conversation, made up a story which spiralled into the funniest
tale as those who chose to contribute.
Sometimes Sarah would record these tales and they would be posted on the website along with photos as a pictorial reminder of our fellowship together.
Later- in the early summer we drove to Kingston Lacy Allotments where The Jolly’s meet fortnightly to plant, tend and harvest flowers and edible produce throughout the growing months.
There was no shortage of effort and enthusiasm when we watch the volunteers encouraging everyone who takes part be it someone with care needs or carer.
We would gather to have tea and cakes in the stunning setting surrounded colour, produce and birdsong. If the rain threatened there was always the kitchen to retreat to where we could continue with fun and fellowship.
We have also spent time at Wimborne St Giles Village Hall where fortnightly there is a wonderful opportunity to get together for lunch cooked for us by Michelin Star chef George and Claire.
Again, much fun and entertainment is available, namely seated yoga, dancing and music making with instruments, some recognisable and others a times bizarre. Painting and crafts are also on the curriculum regularly.
The fact is that “In Jolly Good Company” in our experience has enriched the lives of both my parents and, in turn given me great pleasure to see them delight in the midst of the kindest of people.
I cannot sufficiently enough convey the quality of provision by Sarah Rampton and her volunteers.
I do hope that it continues to be well supported and many more people will be helped and encouraged in the way that we have.

Singing and drumming
WIMBORNE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY
Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community (WDFC) was founded in 2013 with the aim of raising awareness of dementia across the town, and to ensure that the voices of people with dementia, their carers and families are heard.
One of the first actions taken by WDFC was to visit every retail outlet in the town with an information pack to help their business become dementia friendly. We are now arranging Dementia Awareness Training for several establishments in the town so that their staff are aware of the needs of dementia sufferers and know how to support them.
WDFC supports three flagship projects: firstly, the Step Outside gardening group at the Kingston Lacy allotments. WDFC funds an experienced facilitator which
enables the group to meet twice monthly. The second project is Jolly Days, which now takes place in the Museum of East Dorset in Wimborne town centre, as well as in Wimborne St Giles. Jolly Days are an opportunity to meet people and join in activities, such as music, art and crafts in a safe and friendly environment. The third major initiative was to raise funds for the purchase of a Magic Table which offers a series of interactive light games for people with mid- to latestage dementia. The Magic Table is based at Streets Meadow care home, but managed by PramaLife, and is available for hire by community groups.
We organised a successful BSO Cake Concert in Wimborne Methodist Church Hall in November 2022 and hope
to hold another one soon.
In May 2022 we had a display and information table in the Museum garden during Dementia Action Week to raise awareness of dementia and to promote the activities that take place in the town. We also placed a knitted ”forget me not” cover on the post box in the centre of town, which instigated a lot of interest and conversation. We plan to do something similar during Dementia Action Week in May this year.
We take every opportunity to raise awareness of dementia among the local community and to do what we can to support dementia sufferers and their carers. There is a lot going on the town and we feel that a big part of our work is to let people know about it.

Chat Cafe Local
THE EASIEST WAY TO MAKE A FRIEND AND RELIEVE LONELINESS.
Chatting
belonging is the answer to
It’s been difficult isolating and returning to this awkward era of ‘awkward’ but at chat clubs there is none of that. We just do what is normal, have coffee with friends. Everyone is welcome to come and no one needs to worry about crossing the threshold because lovely local volunteers are looking out for you and will introduce themselves to you. Sometimes there are five people, sometimes ten around the tables, but our most common denominator is everyone is lovely, interesting, friendly and we are chat clubbers who care.
There is no pressure to talk, some people just like having company, but by coming you are beginning to belong in Post Lockdown life.
There are 13 chat clubs in 7 towns to choose from and they run 6 days a week and once a month all 7 towns meet together for a nature day out.
Sometimes in chat club we have guest health/wellbeing and cancer prevention speakers, but if you need a bit of support and don’t know where to look, let us know and we will help find out for you.
Happy to Chat pin badges can be picked up at one of our 30 Chat Cafe Local cafes who care. These help connect you with other members in the street or on the bus, but if you are not feeling confident enough for that, don’t worry - you can sign up at chatcafelocal@gmail.com, become a member and the newsletter and badge will be sent to you.
We are a charity that believes everyone can move from denial that they are lonely to taking action to relieve one’s loneliness problem. We know there is no shame in loneliness, that began with Noah’s Ark setting a stereotype.
Life is meant to be lived, so let’s do that like the other earlier members who 90% state – “My mental health has improved since coming to chat club.”

Oakley Friends:
Friends indeed for those in need.
A recommendation from an attendee and trainee carer for why you could benefit from attending Oakley Friends
Concerned as to what to do best for a confused loved one in your attempt to care? That was my situation a few months ago when, thankfully, I saw a leaflet promoting the Oakley Friends. A call to their contact number put me in touch with Judy, who explained what they offered for carers and that a place was available on the next course. So, I duly arrived at the first of ten sessions held at Canford Magna Church Hall situated just off Oakley Lane.
Over coffee there is opportunity to chat with fellow carers: sharing your experiences and learning from others, as we are all at various stages of our journey of caring for our loved ones. Then the guest speakers talk on the various aspects which a carer may have to deal with.
Insights are given by Social Services as to what help is available. A local solicitor talked of the advisability of LPA’s and wills. A doctor from Poole Hospital led an illustrated session on the different forms of dementia, while a specialist nurse, with much laughter, on another occasion took us through the issue of incontinence. We learned of physical, emotional and technological help that is available and how to access it, contact details for several agencies were given. We learned how to register with the GP as a carer.
I now feel better equipped to deal with future developments, and commend Oakley Friends to anybody in similar circumstances.

Stress Busters
Stress Busters are four ladies from West Moors and Ferndown who met through our husband’s attending a local dementia group in Ferndown.
Our husbands then joined a new Memory Lane group run by Prama Life held in St Mary’s Church, Ferndown. The four of us met every Tuesday for coffee and a heartfelt chat when we can discuss our husband’s journey on this cruel disease. Over the past year we have helped each other with advice, support and practical solutions.
We were then approached by Prama Life to see if we could offer support and help to others just starting this long journey and of course we said “yes”.
We meet every fourth Tuesday 2pm to 3.30pm for coffee/tea in The Beacon, St Mary’s Church, Ferndown - Room 1 where we welcome new members to our group. We offer support and signpost them to appropriate support agencies and departments, leaning on the experiences we have all gone through which are changing daily. Our carers group is kindly funded by The Leonardo Trust.
We try to have a speaker every month but if not, we sit and talk to each other and offer much needed support on our ongoing issues. Just having someone to listen is sometimes all you need.
For a list of confirmed speakers please see What’s on in Ferndown, If you are a carer, come and join our very friendly group where you will be warmly welcomed by us all, but remember above all you are doing an amazing job so be kind to yourself and find time for you.

What is social prescribing?
Crane Valley Primary Care Network Team
Crane Valley Primary Care Network has 3 Social Prescribers in post, Pip, Rachel & Seprina working with patients registered at The Barcellos family Practice, The Cranborne Practice, The Verwood Surgery and West Moors Village Surgery. You can make contact through the GP surgeries within the Crane Valley network.
The team work closely with the local voluntary run clubs and groups to offer patients a diverse array of activities to help people re-engage with the community and feel less isolated, lonely, anxious or depressed. The team are also able to offer signposting to organisations that could help people with debt, housing, care, bereavement, exercise, weight management etc..
Recognising that people’s health and wellbeing are determined mostly by a range of social, economic and environmental factors, social prescribing seeks to address people’s needs in a holistic way. It also aims to support individuals to take greater control of their own health.
Social prescribing is designed to support people with a wide range of social, emotional or practical needs, and many schemes are focused on improving mental health and physical wellbeing.
Schemes delivering social prescribing can involve a range of activities that are typically provided by voluntary and community sector organisations. Examples include volunteering, arts activities, group learning, gardening, befriending, cookery, healthy eating advice and a range of sports.
Social prescribing is about having a conversation about you to discover what matters to you.
For more information please visit https://www.england.nhs.uk/ personalisedcare/social-prescribing/
Poole North PCN
The Poole North social prescribing team can be contacted through the GP surgeries within the Poole North PCN. This includes The Hadleigh Practice, The Harvey Practice, Birchwood Practice and Canford Heath Group Practice.
Wimborne and Ferndown PCN
This PCN covers the Wimborne and Ferndown areas. The social prescribing team can be contacted via the GP surgeries including Old Dispensary Surgery, Walford Mill Medical Centre, Quarterjack Surgery in Wimborne, and Penny’s Hill Surgery and Orchid House Surgery in Ferndown.
25 Dementia Friendly Communities
Social prescribing, also sometimes known as community referral, is a means of enabling health professionals to refer people to a range of local, nonclinical services. The referrals generally, but not exclusively, come from professionals working in primary care settings, for example, GPs or practice nurses.
“What matters to you?”
Dorset Mind
We focus on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing over a 12-week period. It’s a set of steps that are proven to help wellbeing. When attending a session with us, you will learn about: how to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers; how to connect with others and nature; how to be active through gentle gardening; how to take notice using your senses; and how to give - by growing produce that’s given to local foodbanks.
In Dorchester alone last year, we helped over 200 families with the fresh fruit and vegetable we grew. It gives our participants a great sense
of purpose when they attend, knowing that what they grow helps others in the community.
Our sessions also include nature-based art using paints, clay, slate and wood. Creativity is also known to help people express themselves and improve wellbeing. Participants have painted colourful ‘Positive Pebbles,’ planted hanging baskets and created works of art on site.
Our Dorchester allotment has been running for a few years and successfully supports adults and young people. Our Weymouth site at Tumbledown Farm opened last year. Our groups at both sites help support people, families in the local community. We also deliver corporate team-building days, helping businesses fulfil their CSR requirement and give them a sense of achievement by helping us help people.
We are extremely excited to launch new sites across Dorset this year. We will be working with Abbeyfield Wessex, Moretons House in Ferndown utilising their greenhouse for planting seeds, nurturing seedlings to be
planted out at the FDFT allotment plot. Also a new site based at Shillingstone. By connecting with Growing Compassionate Communities our Ferndown sessions hope to support carers, friends and family of those living with dementia. We also hope to offer a second session to Blue Light and NHS workers. Caring for others can affect mental wellbeing, so giving yourself the time to be outside and follow the Five Ways to Wellbeing can help build resilience when caring for others.
To join us at Eco in Mind as a volunteer or participant, no gardening experience is needed, just an interest in being outside to support mental wellbeing. Sessions do need to be booked, please email us at: ecoinmind@dorsetmind. uk for more information or head to our website for more details: https://dorsetmind. uk/help-and-support/activitysupport-groups/ecoinmind

We are also extremely pleased to announce the edition of a fully serviced, accessible toilet. For all to use at the allotments, also enabling our allotment to be fully inclusive including those living with or caring for those with dementia.
If you would like to come along just to spend time, or tend to our beds, please contact us at peterjonescipn@outlook.com.
Growing Compassionate Communities
- Ferndown Community Allotment
Our allotments were established pre pandemic and re-launched in 2022 by holding a party and inviting local organisations along. We were so pleased to welcome Carers and residents of Fernhill Dementia Home, High Mead Farm, Dorset Mind and others to our event.
We are getting ready for this years growing season and can confirm that we have secured a fully serviced, accessible toilet again this year from 1st March to the end of September. This ensures our allotment can be used by all including those living with or caring for those with Dementia.
We are also extremely pleased to welcome Dorset Mind who will be running a weekly Eco In Mind group starting on the 17th April for 12 weeks. Visit the What’s on in Ferndown section, or read the editorial feature from Dorset Mind in this edition for further information.
We would welcome other local organisations or community groups to use our beautiful allotment. Whether it’s for a one-off meet, or a regular group. Please contact the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Community Chair Michael Deane for further information of how to book.

Preparing for the upcoming growing season
Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community committee have supported the ‘Step Outside’ allotment project for many years now. And hope to do so for many more to come. They are run by In Jolly Good Company – a not for profit charity who you can read more about in this edition.
Based at Kingston Lacy. This is a collaborative project involving Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community, National Trust, Dorset Council and In Jolly Good Company. It’s a great afternoon out and you don’t need any experience of gardening to join in. Some like to sit and chat, whilst others harvest vegetables and pick flowers. As well as gardening we offer art, crafts, live music, storytelling and gentle yoga and we supply tea and posh biscuits. We close for the winter and reopen in March. We meet every 2nd and 4th Friday afternoon at Kingston Lacy. Our allotment groups have proved to be so popular that we are in the process of planning more at other locations.
What is Dementia Action Week?
Dementia Action Week is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest and longest running awareness campaign.
Dementia Action Week is an awareness raising campaign. Each year, we work with individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to ‘act on dementia’.
This magazine was setup and continues to be supported by local Dementia Friendly organisations. Including Corfe Mullen, Ferndown, West Moors and Wimborne. You will find information about each group in every edition of this magazine, and a ‘What’s on in these areas and the surrounding area’. All groups listed are fully inclusive and suitable for those living with or caring for someone with Dementia.
You will read about the allotments in Corfe Mullen, Ferndown and Wimborne – all fully inclusive and Dementia Friendly.
Regular updates and articles from charities such as Growing Compassionate Communities, In Jolly Good Company and Dorset Mind – all supporting those living with Dementia can be found in this magazine.
Our Dementia committees are committed to supporting those living in our communities by signposting, holding groups, and raising awareness.
Please visit our Facebook pages for any events that may be happening throughout Dementia Action Week in the towns mentioned.
In addition - I challenge you to spot the wonderful, knitted Post Box covers knitted and donated by Tina from The Douch Family Funeral Directors. You will spot them in Corfe Mullen, Ferndown, West Moors and Wimborne throughout Dementia Action Week.
Upload your photos to Facebook and Like and tag our community pages. Don’t forget to include the #DAW2023 to your post! Alternatively send your photos to community@fcdouch.co.uk and we will be sure to upload them to our social media pages throughout the week.
