ItwouldneverhaveoccurredtoCharlesKeith in1951,whenhefoundedthecompanyin Christchurch,thathiscompanywouldhaveto endureaglobalpandemic.But,likethe rest oftheworld,thatisexactlywhatKeithMotors hadtotacklein2020.

Theyearwasnineteenseventy-eight and Irecallstarting anewjobwith asmall familybusinessthatsoldclearanceart papertomagazineprintersintheLondon area.Therewereonlysixpeopleworking forthecompanyplustwoenormous Alsatiandogsthatbarkedincessantlyand frequentlyleftunmentionablesoutsidethe warehousedoors.
Thepostmanwhowasjustasscared ofthedogsasme,knockedontheoffice windowratherthanriskfingersthrough theletterbox.Hewasgreetedbysnarling monstersclawingattheglass.Heinsisted onleavingthepostonthewindowsilland whocouldblamehim?
Theownermanagedthebusinessinan antiquatedwayandwas aman inhismidfifties,tall,thin,withhishairpartedinthe middle.Itwasn’tlongbeforeIrealisedhe wassomeonewholackedcommunication skillsand regardedhiscustomersasan interruptiontothetelevisionprogrammes heconstantlywatchedinhisoffice.
Onmyfirstday,dressedinmyshiny mohairsuitwithflaredtrousersandkipper tie, Iedged my wayintothecramped officeasthebossheldontothedogsthat lookedintentonrippingoffmyhead. Iwas tolearntoolate,tomydismay,thatbeing tooclosetothesebeastsandwearing decentclothingwasunwise.Globulesof dribble,salivagrowingintothickerhanging shapes,inevitablyfound awayontoto you.
Irememberbeingintroducedto colleagues,oneofwhom Ilaterwent ontocallthe‘Fisherman’.HeaskedifI likedfishingandonhearingmynegative replysoonlostinterest.TheonlytimeI borrowedhislong,plasticruler,Iobserved thatthefirsttwoincheshadbeensnapped offtheendfromhimusingitas afly swatter -theyellowyblack remnantsofa squashedfly remained. Ivowedtobringin myownrulernexttime.

Therewerenocalculatorsonly areadyreckonerandslideruleontheowner’s desk.Thisofficeonlyusedhandwritten recordsandtwotelephonesthatshared oneline. Ihadtowaitfor acolleague tofinishtheircallbeforemakingmine.I becamepartoftheirstrangeworldthat involvedlittleconversationandlotsof sportonthedustyoldRadioRentalsTV.
LunchwasincludedinthedealandBeryl, alarge womaninhersixties,turnedup everydayattwelveo’clocktobasharound inthekitchen.Inalltheheatoftheglorious summerweather,shealwaysworeher blue anorak.Therewouldbe ahissingsound and Ifearedshe’dnotlitthegasproperly. Hertakeonhygienewasinterestingtoo. Soupbowlswithfoodrunsdownthesides dissolvedanyhungerpangs Imayhave had.Shemusthavebeentheonlyperson intheworldcapableofscorching aboiled egg.Ononeoccasionmycolleagueswere sittingatthecrampedkitchentablestaring atthreebread rolls.Theyalltookoneand Isat therelookingattheemptyplate.The fishermansaid,‘Where’sMark’sone?’
Berylsighed,‘Imusthavethrownitinthe bin.’
Icringedasherfatarmenteredthe‘bin of athousandsins’to retrievetheplastic wrapper.Intriumphshepointedtomy roll.
ThedaythatBerylstarted asmallfirein thekitchen remainsetchedinmymind.As shepreparedlunch,sheinadvertentlyleft theteatowelonthetoasterwhichstarted
tosmoulder.Thebosswasfuriousand Berylwasaskedtoleave.Asshealready hadonherblueanorak,shewassoon gone.
Thereweretimeswhenthebosssulked, mainlywhen Isoldtheentiretyofanitem’s stock.He’dsay,‘Whatif acustomer comesontomorrowwanting apacketof thebluepaperandwehavenothingtosell them?’
When Iarrivedhomethateveningmy wifeasked,‘Didyouhave agoodday?’
‘Mmm,no.I’vebeenintrouble.’
‘Why,whathaveyoudone?’
‘Seemslike Isoldtoomuch.’
Istayedthreeyearswiththissmall setupbutanopportunityarosetowork foranotherlargerpapergroupthathad smartofficesandsalescommissionfor thestaff. Iwassuitablyimpressedwiththe computersforprocessingordersandstock control.However,overtime, Idiscovered thattheneworganisation Iworkedforwas toolargeandwewereforeverlostin asea oftakeoversandconstantchanges.
But Ineverlostsightofmy rootsand thoseearlydayswithmyoldcompany. Itwasmadnessandfunall rolledintoa ball.Gonewerethedayswhenthetoast wasburning(literally)orthetimetheboss encouragedmetohelphim‘lickandstick’ his‘GreenShieldStamps’intotheirbooks. Onthedaytheboss’sfather,agentleman inhislateeighties,wasgiventhejobof stickingthestampsonthemailpriorto posting,hewentthroughfortypoundsof stamps(alotinthosedays)applyingthem alloverthesurfacesoftheenvelopes, evencoveringtheaddresses. We certainly hadsomecolourfulmailthatday.
Backinthoseworkingdaystherewas littleurgency;lifewascalmerandthe onlyfirefightingwasdealingwithBeryl’s kitchenmishaps.However,what ashock Ireceivedonenteringthe real world ofwork.Oh,well,atleast Ihavesome amusingmemories.
Icannotsaythatfamilyhistorybeyondmy grandfathershasparticularlyinterested me.However,alloffortyyearsago Iwas rummagingthrough aboxofoldsheet musicinanantiquarianbookshopinAshley Rd,Boscombe,longsincecloseddown.
To mysurprise Ifoundthemanuscriptofa violinsonatabyFriedrichWilheimRUST republishedbyPetersin1926,butlongsince outofprint.Itmademecurious,so Itrolled throughvariousdictionariesofmusicians andfoundhimlistedas aCourtComposer totheDukeofSaxony.Iplayedthroughthe wholepiece,anditwascertainlywritten inthatperiod.Frankly,itwaspleasantbut distinctlyunmemorable.Hediedin1796.
Mygrandfatherondad’ssidewasbornin thelatterpartofthenineteenthcentury. MyfatherwasborninBournemouthinthe 1920s.Legendhasitthat abranchofthe familyemigratedtoEnglandshortlyafter theFrancoPrussian Warin1870.The rest remainedinGermany.One memberwas somewhatbizarrelynamedOTTOVON GROSSBURGERwhohadmarriedHeidi,
oneoftheRustdaughters.Hislifewas asbizarreashisname.Helefthiswife andfamilyandbecame amonkin asilent order.Already aqualifiedchemist,the monasteryusedhistalentstogoodeffect ashebecameanexpertindistillingbrandy. However,abatchhewasmakingto anew secretformulaexplodedinthecellarcausing extensivedamage.Thiswasin1939and unfortunatelytheS.S.heardaboutthisand forciblyconscriptedhimintotheArmy.While servingontheRussianFrontin1942the Germanswererunningdesperatelyshortof ammunition.Theyhadplentyofshellcases butwerefastrunningoutofexplosives forhandgrenades.Ottosettowork.
Unfortunately,notlongafterthisenterprise began,therewas amassiveexplosionatthe garrisonwhereOttowasstationed,andOT ashewasfondlyknownwasnomore.
Thereisaninterestingpostscripttothis story.In1969the monasterytowhomOtto hadbeenattachedwasindesperateneed ofmoneyfor roof repairsandindiggingup thedecayingtimbersinhisformerattic, discoveredthreecasesofthemuchpriced vintagebrandyof1938.Itwentunderthe hammeratanauctioninDusseldorfin1970 andwasspottedbyaneagleeyedMI6agent whopaidtheequivalentof£5Kforallthree cases.Inalltheephemerathatwassoldwith itwas atinylittlepocketbookwhichseemed tohaveverylittlevalue.Itturnedouttobe Otto’ssecretformulaswhichMI6hadno troubledeciphering.Knowingtheworldof spyingas Ido,itwouldbenosurpriseifthey werenottoinjectthisprizedvintagewith anundetectablepoisonforuseinthefield. Afterallwhocan resist a1938brandy.
Itwouldnotbetoofancifultospeculatethat Otto,weariedbythedailyscourging’sinthe monasterywasplanningtoescapewiththis cacheofbrandyas anicelittlenesteggfor hisfuture.Sadly,fameandfortuneofthe rightsortcametoolateforOtto.

We havearound60,000thoughts aday,soitprettymuchmakessensetoget someofthosethoughtsoutofourhead.
Onceourheadsareclearer,weshould,intheory,have roomforlivinginthe momentandtakingstockofthebeautythatsurroundsus.

ThevesselarrivedoffGoldBeachin NormandylateonD-Day,andputitstanks ashorethefollowingmorning.Itthenspent monthscarryingmoretanks,menand suppliesacrosstheChanneltohelpliberate Europe.

Thisaircrafthadpreviouslybeeninaction againsttheLuftwaffeoverDunkirkandwas damagedon1stJune1940andagainduring theBattleofBritainwhenitcrashlanded
on18thAugust1940beforeundergoing another rebuildbeforetheSDFreceivedit. Nevertheless,itstillhadthestarboardwing fromanotherHurricane,whichisevidentin thecamouflagepaintscheme.
TheSDFusedL1592toescortanddefend radartrialsaircraftbut,italsocarriedout localareadefence.Onenotableinterception withtheSDFduringtheBattleofBritainwas on15thOctober1940whenL1592tookoff aftertheairraidsirenwentoffandthelone L1592founditclosingon aformationof24 MesserschmittBf109sthatthepilot,P/O CliffordWrighthadmistakenforSpitfires! Hedivedawayjustintime.
AftertheBattleofBritainofficiallyended,the Luftwaffestillmountedraidsontheareaand L1592wasstillinactionon10thNovember 1940whenFL/LtDouglasRayment attacked aDornierDo215in aformation oftwentyaircraft,perhapsthelastofmany scrapesithadwiththeenemy.Therefore,it isquiteamazingthatitstillexistsforall tosee!
