Rustic Fayre Programme 2021

Page 1

We’re back!!

After an unprecedented twenty-four month gap, I’m delighted to be able to say, Welcome Fellow Rustics, We’re back!! The enforced break has had many varying knock-ons for different people (not necessarily all bad) but the vibes I’m picking from all quarters is a big welcome to sociability creeping back. Of course some will be more cautious than others, understandable; but with the lifting of statuary rules it’s up to all of us to act responsibility, and be mindful of others. But all things considered the Club felt that the return of “Rustic” in 2021 would be welcomed. Hope you agree? Unfortunately circumstances mean there will be one or two absentees (e.g. We’re unable to accommodate a Car-Boot sale) but we’re still left with plenty of interest to entertain you. There’s a full Arena; Music, Classic Vehicles; and Food & Drink options. Also, weather permitting we’ll be graced by a “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight” Spitfire flypast. But it’s your presence on the day that will mean more than ever to all the groups and charities whose funding has dried up since Rustic 2019. So do come along and, If you think you could support us in some other way, advertising or perhaps sponsoring an element, I’d love to hear from you. Bring on the Sun-Shine

A Message fom the President of Verwood Rotary Club. After a few anxious weeks of “can we/can’t we make it happen?” the Rustic Fayre is going ahead! I am delighted to be writing this as my year as Club President gets underway. Having all come through such a difficult time and with so many events cancelled, the Rotary Club is so pleased to be organising this event again. It’s just what Verwood needs! An Event that brings our local community together to enjoy all the things that make it such a special family day out. And its right here on the doorstep. As a club we thrive on being able to make a difference to our community and, like many other groups, it has not been possible to do this in the way we would want to for some time. As always, all the money raised by the club goes back to local charities, organisations and good causes. Come and talk to us on the day if you would like to be part of this going forward. We hope the community of Verwood will come out in force and support the “Rustic Fayre”. The planning is now well underway. We are very aware of the need to still be cautious but we say: “Let’s go for it – a big day out” and hopefully a sunny one!

At 4ish the ever popular Corporate Duck Race supported by “Dorset Windows” sets off down the River Crane. With 100 runners supported by many of our local businesses it should be a close run thing. But this year there’ll be the opportunity to pick & back one of the “quackers”, maybe on behalf of the family or perhaps your Grandchild? Ask any Rotarian for details; our website, or look–out for Mike & Ken in the field on the day.

RUSTIC’S PROMISED “SPITFIRE” The Spitfire is the most famous British fighter aircraft in history. It became a symbol of freedom during the summer months of 1940 by helping to defeat the German air attacks during the Battle of Britain. It was the highest performing Allied aircraft in 1940.The crowds at the 1936 RAF Display at Hendon had a first glimpse of the prototype Spitfire, but it was not until August 1938 that production Spitfires began to enter service. By the outbreak of war, a year later, nine squadrons were equipped. In spite of vigorous demands from the France the Commander in Chief of Fighter Command refused to send any Spitfires to France during the German Blitzkrieg of 1940. The wisdom of that decision was clearly shown. By July 1940 RAF Fighter Command had nineteen Spitfire MkI squadrons available. Once the RAF modified their tactics to properly counter the Luftwaffe, the Spitfire MkI proved to be the only British fighter capable of meeting the Messerschmitt Bf109E on equal terms. Often the outcome of a combat depended more on the quality of the pilot than his aircraft. Further improvements in performance were made by fitting new type propellers, known as constant speed units, and modifying the Merlin engine to run on 100 octane fuel.

b lu C y r a t o R e Th Of Verwood Verwood Rotary Club was formed in 1988, and is a small friendly club, part of Rotary International which is arguably the largest service organisation in the World. It’s part of a “Brotherhood (& of course Sisterhood) of over 1.2 million members operating in 168 countries worldwide. We meet at Crane Valley Golf Club on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings of each month, for a meal, conversation and fellowship. Should there be five Tuesdays in a month we arrange to take our

partners out for a social evening at a local restaurant or hostelry. Our motto is “Service above Self”, and events and funds are raised throughout the year in support of charities and good causes, both locally and throughout the world. COULD YOU BE INTERESTED? New Members are always made welcome; why not take a look at the Verwood Rotary Club’s website, or speak to any Club Member to see if it’s for You?

The New Forest WHaM (West Hampshire Jazz Workshop The Flamin’ Ukes aged Musicians) **The Flamin’ Ukes are definite though, and well-practiced. They are a ukulele band, which has been going for eight years now, with bass & percussion, and their sole raison d’etre is to play and raise money for charity

**The New Forest Jazz Workshop has been going for even longer (18 years), and meets at Godshill Village Hall monthly. Anyone can come along who plays an instrument, whatever level, and wants to learn how to play jazz. It’s a true open band

**WHaM (West Hampshire aged Musicians) is an informal group that mainly plays traditional old English & Irish dance music

by telephoning Derek Ayling You can contact any of these three bands hippotrain@btinternet.com on 01425 650770 or by emailing them on RUSTIC FAYRE 2021 | 27 |

Beneficiaries 2019.

Over Rustic’s last 26 years well in excess of £100,000 has been raised for (mostly) local and international good causes. Last year alone £10,000 was distributed at an evening event in the memorial hall, to 29 groups and deserving individuals. Among them:-

Joanne’s Country Corner

Cranborne Bowling Club

Verwood Stroke Club

Forest F.M. Community Radio

Verwood Community Christmas

Green Cottage Riding for the Disabled

Verwood Concert Brass

Verwood Pantomime Society

Sturt’s Farm Community

Add to this the visibility and funds raised by stall holders at the Fayre, and you can see how much the Rustic means to Verwood!
