Groom

s the groom, you should always listen when the wedding preparations are taking place, it doesn’t matter if your bride takes care of more arrangement’s than you do, as long as you have the correct colour scheme for your suit, you will look perfect next to your blushing bride on the big day. It’s common nowadays to find a groom wearing a Navy Blue or Grey suit. Traditionally it would be a block suit standing next to the bride in a white dress. Top hats and waist coast are for the more formal weddings, but what you wear, your best man and groomsman have to wear as well. Bow ties are essential and to keep it classy, you do not want to wear a clip-on tie. Grey suits are more formal wedding suits, most commonly worn with a light pink wait coast and a white tie. A small flower matching the brides bouquet should be showing in your left side pocket. Most commonly it is a white or pink flower depending on the colour theme of the wedding itself. Classy shoes for both Groom and Groomsmen should be the same on the day. Brown shoes generally match with the navy-blue suit and the black shoes with the grey, unless you’re wearing all black, but just remember it’s your wedding day, not a funeral.

Bride

very bride has the vision of her ‘dream dress’ whether it’s short, long, strapless or with long lace sleeves. Most wedding’s however will only let you book 1-2 hour slots for looking and trying on dresses that suit you so it’s best to narrow down your options before you step into the bridal store. Your silhouette should be the first part of the dress that is chosen, this will highlight your best assets and also hide your least favourite parts of your body. It’s all about choosing the right dress for you after all. Whether you are petite, busty, or plus size, hourglass, lean or straight, you must have this figured out before the dress is chosen. It’s best to not choose a wedding dress just because you feel it’s fashionable at the moment. You can try on dresses by yourself, you do not need to have an audience with you. As a bride, you must make sure you have a nice bra on when trying on dresses and also on the big day, a white or nude bra usually works. Also accessories can be seen as a major part of your wedding outfit. A good neckline of a dress would usually mean you do not have to wear a necklace. However, a nice pair of bling earrings will always go down well. A veil or floral headpiece has to be an important feature.

Engagement rings aren’t the only rings that get to sparkle! Wedding rings can dazzle with diamond settings, too. Your man may want some bling too!

Sparkle

It is tradition that the bride pay for the groom’s ring, and the groom pays for the bride’s ring, as a symbolic gesture of that commitment.

The price of your rings depends on design, metal, make etc, but we would say the average wedding ring is around £1,800. I mean, you want it to last a lifetime, don’t you?

How to choose your

Metals Before thinking about shape or design, start by narrowing down your metal options Many brides choose a metal based on their engagement ring. White gold and platinum are popular due their durability for everyday wear and tear

Shape The idea is that your wedding ring and engagement ring will sit side by side, so choosing a ring that fits in with your sparkler is important.

Wedding Rings Unlike many elements of your wedding the cake, the décor, the flowers, your wedding bands will stand the test of time and stay with you beyond the big day. Ring shopping is an exciting and emotional time for any couple. Don’t let yourself get too carried away, as there are several important things for you to remember!

Profile To match or not to match?

Your options will include: court shape, which is rounded on the inside and out; flat profiles, which are completely rectangular; or D-shape, flat on the inside, round on the outside. these subtle changes will mean a lot to you and your man.

It is often said that wedding rings must match up, or look similar, but this isn’t necessarily the case. you’re both going to wear this forever so choose what you like. 9

Keeping up with the Traditions  How many can you uphold? 

T

here are many different wedding traditions that every wedding can have. A simple one would be the bride’s father giving her away at the alter and the confetti being thrown over the bride and groom as they leave the church. A bride should always have bridesmaids; these are her witnesses. Bridesmaids were originally thought of as a way of protecting the bride from any evil spirits back in the roman times. Wear a veil! This is also another ancient tradition that brides believed would fight off evil spirits. A bride traditionally is meant to wear a white wedding dress; this is so the bride is showing her purity to her groom. A bride who throws her bouquet for her bridesmaids and guests is considered lucky and rumor has it, whoever catches it, is the one next to be married. Something old, this tradition shows the bride leaving her old life behind and family, the bride usually wears something of the mothers or grandmothers such as pearls. Something new symbolizes the new life so the bride will do this by wearing wedding shoes as her something new. Borrowing something would be usually the mother’s bracelet or fathers handkerchief. Something blue is also another sign of purity, this also gives the bride the excuse to lie about how pure she is. Finally, for the bride is the silver sixpence in her shoe. This symbolizes future wealth in your marriage. A best man is always this is for the groom to his brides family. Themed Wedding Inspiration:

Fairytales & Gatsby Glamour Themed weddings are an instant know-all for what your guests can expect your day to entail. There are so many themes out there that we have decided to highlight two of the most recent trending wedding themes.

A Disney Fairytale

Intricate details, bold colour choices and beautiful calligraphy.

As young girls, fairytales may have captured your hearts from a very young age. Isabelle and David Blightly were able to recreate the fairytales we all know and love on their wedding day. A beautiful wedding affair captured by photographer, Marie Bleyer saw bride and groom Isabelle and David 26

draw inspiration from the Disney classic, Cinderella. Their combination of navy and gold recreated a royal and magical amalgamation of colour.

Isabelle wore a simple blue band of ribbon around her waist on her wedding dress to incorporate Cinderella’s headband somewhere on her.

Gold embellishments on frames, candlabras and cupcakes combined with handwritten calligraphy are the tiny details that Isabelle added to make her day that little bit more special. Use intricate patterns in cupcake detail.

Incorporate lace, vintage hard-backs and mismatching crockery for that fairytale twist. Use rose petals and tiny glass bottles as well. Miniature crockery and plays on different sizes of objects also creates that magical look.

The Great Gatsby

The roaring 20’s means embellishments, headpieces and metallics galore. Gold tones and jewel embellishments in excess are what the glamourised version of the roaring 20’s posess. Sleek, chic and glam are encompassed within this era and that is what this theme will capture. Asymmetric designs for your wedding stationary with gold accents are Gatsby in all its glory. Mesh and silver head pieces are also complimentary to long, sleek bejewelled dresses. It’s completely acceptable to go over board with glitter, in fact, it’s encouraged. Up the glamourous vibe by doing it this way. Play around with different textures by combining feather trimmed accessories with tulle and pearls.

S

unday the 6th November 2016, down at Southsea seafront was a vintage wedding fayre to remember. Me and one of my friends decided to go to this wedding fayre to get some information about how people create their perfect days. I wasn’t planning on what happened next. To make sure that we fit in to the place, I pretended to be engaged for the afternoon placing my love heart shaped Pandora ring on the marriage finger, and the crazy thing is, people actually believed that I was engaged. Questions started flooding about my “big day”, venue, wedding date, dress, guest list, bridesmaids, I was telling stories to all the people about my big day (the one that I imagined when I was 12). Not once did I believe that anyone suspected that I was lying to them just to get information. We were greeted with free champagne at the photographers table in fancy wedding glasses that I can only assume cost more than a wedding dress. Walking around the venue seemed surreal but fascinating, seeing all these fabulous wedding gowns and cakes that people were putting their names down for, I felt left out so I gave her my email address and the date of my “wedding” which is actually my birthday. My friend tried to hold back my laughter, she couldn’t believe that I was putting my name down for a cake that I will never purchase. A fashion show of different wedding dresses was held on the stage, seeing all these old vintage wedding dresses from different stools around the fayre was memorising to watch and actually, picturing my fake wedding day in my head. Flyers were flying towards me about different things that you can plan for wedding, centre pieces, party favours, wedding cars, flowers, make-up, hair, I truly was mind blown. Coming towards the end of the fayre, my friend spotted a flower stool where people were creating their own flower headbands, also this would be good if you were planning a budget wedding, very easy to make and with real flowers. We sat down and started making these headbands that we were dying to make all day. I then continued to answer the many questions that I had been answered. I used my imagination and told the woman that my boyfriend proposed to me on the day of my graduation. The response I got was lovely and it made me believe more that I was actually engaged to be married. Out of nowhere, a power cut interrupted the wedding fayre causing us to finish our headbands in the dark whilst everyone else was forced to pack up their stools. We left with big smiles on our faces, laughing away with all the great imaginations of what a wedding is actually like to plan. 30

t Real Weddings t The 1990’s Pearly & William

Pearly Bezuidenhout, 49 got married in 1991 to the love of her life William Amos Bezuidenhout. They had a traditional Catholic wedding in a church where they exchanged their vows. Pearly describes the wedding trends as classy and elegant. Many brides in the 90’s had similar choices and stuck to the classic white dress and pointy heels.

Big messy hair was very popular in the 1990’s and so many brides styled their hair in messy curls as Mrs Bezuidenhout has. Puffy sleeves and padded shoulders were very much in for wedding dresses in the 1990’s.They made more of a fashion statement and gave your dress that pop.

Caps were worn with veils which made the bride look elegant and fancy.

A lot of blush and lickstick was used in the 90’s weddings as it made the bride look more bright and gave her a bashful and cute look.

Big dresses with petticoats were worn and they gave the bride a more lavish look.

90’s Bridesmaid’s & more...t

1990’s weddings were quite lavish. When it came to cakes (see above) they usually had three separate cakes or tiers of different sizes covered in icing with decorations on them. Normally edible flowers or sprinkles. Bridesmaids often had frilly dresses of the same colour which is similar to the 21st century and they had wild hairstyles which was of fashion in the 1990’s. Whilst the groomsmen wore tail coats and bow ties which made them look as stylish as the groom himself. A traditional church wedding was very normal in the 1990’s as Pearly Bezuidenhout stated that “to get married in a Catholic Church was very important to my family as they are all religious and I wanted God to be part of their nupitals as I became one with my husband through the sacrament of marriage”. The all white wedding dress was also very common as the 1990’s bride usually did not want to deviate from the norm and wanted to look very elegant. Overall the 1990’s bride had a very traditional wedding in terms of the clasic white wedding dress and shoes and having a religious ceremony in their local church with their friends and family.

Real Weddings Cassandra & Karl

 Wedding Planner, Cassandra Swaby, 26, exchanged vows with Motivational Speaker and Poet, Karl Lokko, 26 on Saturday July, 16th 2016 at The Gibson Hall, Bishopsgate, London in front of their close family and friends. She says:

Karl & Cassandra kept with the theme of purple & butterflies

mellowed the song out and gave the lyrics a more sentimental meaning. My maid of honour Fiona styled my hair. I wanted to go for a sleek and elegant look but I also wanted my hair to be as

We looked at two venues, well Karl did. I couldn’t get the time off work. So all the pressure was on him. The first one which was Karl’s pick was The Banqueting Hall, Whitehall, London. It was so grand with 17th century paintings etched on the ceilings. But for a guest list our size to the amount of bathrooms and space for the wedding party to get changed in, it just couldn’t work. The type of venue that I preferred was an outdoor modern venue with everything simple and white. But because Karl had this King and Queen, Royal Wedding theme going on, so I knew I had to compromise. After the venue was chosen, Karl was going to have little to none input in the

wedding after that (laughs). Our wedding planner Magdalene who owns wedding planning company La Jefet, that Karl met at his friend Sam Branson’s office, was literally a God send and was so patient. We told her we had no budget and her eyes opened wide. She told us she’s going to show us something which we want and cheaper alternatives. Karl knew his suit was going to be purple and I wanted to keep the concept of purple throughout our wedding. The colours gold and white complimented the purple perfectly. Now it was time to figure out where this purple, gold and white wedding would be held. Magdalene helped us eventually find our venue, Gibson Hall in Bishopsgate, London. I immediately fell in love, there were these huge chandeliers which fell into the Royal Wedding theme. But most importantly- it had plenty of room! The main room could definitely fit all of our guests. I just loved the high ceilings, it felt so regal. The garden area was transformed with flowers and ribbons of gold and royal purple subtly place around our alter, where we exchanged our vows. As my bridesmaids in their gold dresses, and groomsmen in their black and white suits and walked down the

ding and placed it on Youtube which went viral and have over 400,000 w the whole video : www.unveiledmagazine.com ‘you are that single raindrop that watered my hope for love. Lengthened my scope for love, strengthened my boat for love. Flood me...your beauty is water to my thirst.’ He nearly made me ruin my makeup before I got to the alter!

Walking down the aisle with my dad, and seeing Karl and all of my church. Just seeing them and knowing about all what I went through, I was overwhelmed, Karl and I are very religious, so I felt like all of this was God’s doing

When our Pastor asked, ‘who gives this woman?’ My father replied “I” but on the left to me I felt like my mum was there in spirit. She knew I was marrying the love of my life and she wanted to be there. You could really feel the love in the atmosphere it felt magical After losing my mother to cancer the year before (when the initial wedding date was set), I wanted include my mother into the wedding somehow Magdalene suggested we create a scent which best represented my mother and placed them on each table. As we said our I Do’s and walked up the aisle as Husband and Wife, a box filled with butterflies which symbolised peace and freedom. We were letting go of any inhibitions and adversity that may come in our marriage were released into the open. As I took photos with my Husband and bridal party (photos which ended up going viral on Instagram and all of the blogs because of our statement photo, showing support to the Black Lives Matter movement) I had entertainment ready for the rest of our guests. I wanted our wedding to be an experience, for my guests, rather than just a waiting game. We had London-based violinist Daj Jordan playing in the first section of our reception partnered with nibbles and cocktails. So they could enjoy some music whilst socialising, he played a mixture of songs from Hip Hop, and grime to old R’n’B. It left everyone feeling pretty nostalgic but elegantly played. It definitely set a high standard for what our guests were about to witness in the main dining room. The party then then led onto the grand ballroom where my bridesmaids and Karl’s groomsmen had partnered up and choreographed dance routines introducing themselves in- ready to entertain our guests Right before Mr and Mrs Lokko came in. (Gosh it still feels surreal calling myself that). As I’m Jamaican and Karl is Ghanaian we weren’t to bring both cultures together when we decided on food, and trust me, there were no complaints on our guests’ end. And boy oh boy was it delicious! I could barely move around in my dress afterwards - which was great because it was time for speeches. We hired host Eddie Kadi, he’s a well known Ghanaian comedian. 35

It allowed Karl and his family to have something to relate to. But most of his jokes were universal so everyone enjoyed. Something which Karl and I liked was that he included everyone. The speeches started off with maid of honour. She recited a beautiful poem based around love, seeing her talk about me and how far we have come, not just as friends but as women. Next to talk Karl’s brother, who never fails to make us laugh. Now he’s got his grandmother asking when is it his time to get married. My sister spoke next, which is when the waterworks started. She mentioned that my mum would have loved to of seen me right now and said she had a gift from my mum to give to me. I was completely blindsided and shocked. i knew nothing about this gift. even when she’s not here, she was able to surprise me. A little heart necklace with some writing engraved on the back. I could barely get the last few words out as my sister made me read out what the engraved note on the back which said “To Cassandra, watching over you bless you my baby girl.” My mum called all of her daughters baby girl so the sentimental gift meant so much, that even though I’m a married woman now- I’ll always be her baby girl. As we raised our glasses, Karl got up and made the final speech. He said “i can’t really call it luck, because luck can’t create this,” as he pointed towards me. Our guests thundered with applause. He reminded us that it was never an easy road but with our faith, love and patience with one another is what has got us here today. It was time to cut our 4-tier purple, white and gold wedding cake, complimented with butterflies near the top (we went for a generic sponge cake filling which could accustom to everyone’s taste). Next was our first dance. We had a gold metallic dance floor in the centre where we welcomed three ballerina dancers with lights sewn into their tutu’s surrounding us. They gracefully danced around us to (insert song name here), this song meant so much to me. In my mother’s last few months she was staying with Karl and I and we used to play this song near enough everyday. It then led onto another choreographed dance with my bridal party. We changed into Ghanaian traditional styled outfits. Karl and his groomsmen also changed 36

into custom made Kente outfits and we had a dance war- it was hilarious! It truly was an unforgettable night. and

just to make sure we filmed the whole wedding so everyone can relive the experience with us.

Troubles with the dress and shoes before the big day.... Cassandra’s Shoes

Sophia Webster white sandal with rose-gold tone leather straps, and finished with laser-cut angel wings with a slim metal stiletto heel, £395

Sarah Alonuko Hollywood glam, bespoke fishtail style dress, £1000

Nothing was ever going to be simple with my dress decision making, because I’m so indecisive. Our wedding planner sent me to some reasonable dress shops. For me, I wanted a dress made in another country but for it to look shop brought. The bridal shop owner I went to was so lovely and she let me choose five fishtail dresses which didn’t really flatter me. So she brought out this princess dress and my eyes lit up. It sparkled and I loved it. But she said I need to get it as soon as possible. I ended up putting a £1000 deposit on the dress, but a couple days later I went back to try it and I started to rethink it. I felt like I looked like one of those toilet roll cosy, a year later I found the dress I truly wanted - baring in mind I’ve already bought a dress.

The designer Karen Grace of the dream dress said she would rent the dress to me for £1,000. But the measurements were too complicated for every tailor I went to get the sizes I needed. So I had to say goodbye to my dream dress. A friend of mine recommended dress maker, Sarah Alonuko. I told her what I wanted and she said she could make it. I was a bit sceptical but I gave her a shot and she basically made the previous dress but better! My shoes were a whole other story, I decided to wear the shoes I initially bought an event earlier in the year and couldn’t be seen wearing them again! I wanted to keep the butterfly theme going so I found these Sophia Webster heels worth £395 and they complimented my dress so effortlessly. I ended up loving the replacement shoes even more than the originals.

not just about you

In order for a marriage to head into a direction that is growing and learning with each other daily, selflessness is crucial. Through this union, you are committing yourself to the other person. You are promising to stay in that commitment for life with that person. Through thick and thin, for better or for worse. Be willing to put others needs, before your own. That is not such a bad thing especially if both of you are willing to be sacrifical and are also willing to compromise along the way.

Communication

Make sure that you and your partner are able to communicate effectively. Each person handles conflict in a different way. Some of the methods we use to handle conflict may be dependent on our upbringing. Talk through each other’s past and sort out any isues you have concerning conflict.

you aren’t. Don’t let the pride of being right all the time determine what you do. Words are powerful. Therefore, learn to accept apologies fully, with no conditions.

“Forgive fully and often.”

Never

stop dating

Quality time spent with your spouse every once in a while is important. Set aside time in the week to go on a date with your significant other. You can make it cheap - i.e a walk, window shopping, coffee date or you can pull out all the stops - i.e dining, a concert, a show, cinema showing, city break. Life with your partner should be enjoyed and falling in love continuously should be fun, besides, you are married to your best friend!

Learn

your love language

“Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages.” Dr. Gary Chapman who, while working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years identified five love languages we use to express and to receive love:

“What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life - to strengthen each other in all labour, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all sorrow, to be one with each other in silent unspeakable memories at the moment of the last parting?”

George Eliot, novelist, 1819-1880

1. Words of Affirmation

This love language uses words to affirm people. For example, compliments and words of encouragement like “You look beautiful today.” or “You are so brilliant at what you do.” will let the other person know how much you love them.

2. Quality Time

This love language is all about giving your undivided attention to someone. When you spend time in the other person’s presence don’t let distractions get in the way of your time together. Be focused and intentional in the way that you spend time with that person.

3. Receiving Gifts

For some people, what makes them feel most loved is receiving gifts. Buying small, medium and large gifts aside from special events and occasions will let the person know how much you love them.

4. Acts of Service

For these people actions speak louder than words. A simple thing such as taking the rubbish out or fixing the boiler will suffice. Jobs that need to be completed within the house or buying groceries for the week without being asked to all show love.

5. Physical Touch

To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch. A long, meaningful hug after a long day at work or a touch of appreciation is enough to let them know you care.

“When you understand that you both differ in ways that you express love - you begin to appreciate those differences and learn how to effectively demonstrate love to the other person.”

Make

it fun!

Be silly, tease eachother and poke fun at eachother - it is possible to do these things without hurting the other person. Recognise that marriage can be fun, you can be silly and enjoy life together.

Marriage is the coming together of two individuals. The aim is to create a union together that serve eachother, honour one another and enable both of you to live in such a way that ultimately expresses the love that you have for one another. Embrace imperfection and be willing to grow in love, humility and selflessness.
