BITTERSWEET LOVE Sugar, Rum, Divorce

4

“Bittersweet Love” is a tale about two entities, human and machine, and examines them through the notion of “divorce”. The project explores the possibility of a divorce ritual within a factory process line in which they provided each other the needed self-sustainable lifecycle. By providing a place that lays closure for those who cannot move on in a severed relationship, the architecture itself reflects upon its own “divorce”; how to cope with its existence when the industry that relies on its infrastructure is no longer flourishing, and to speculate the methods of honoring its afterlife.

WILLY WONKA AND ITS WATER PARK Is this what Willy Wonka Would have Wanted?

6

The scene reimagines Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory nut room into a water park. The declining market for sugar goods forces Willy Wonka to adapt its factory into something that would align with the current trends. Gone are the nutty smell and chirping squirrels, now left with the stench of chlorine and screaming children. The space itself detaches from its legacy, leaving it vunerable to be forgotten.

The diagram illustrates the relationship between the process of manufacturing the product, by-product and divorce ritual. The making of sugar provides the necessary sensorial incubator for a emotional driven journey while being a neutral spectator during the process. Functionally, both the ritual and the factory provides each other the needed supply and demand.

THE DAY AIR SMELLS LIKE CARAMEL Charred Sugar

The legacy of the factory sugar goods goes on in the form of caramalized air. Once a product of a process line becomes the by-product of a ritual. Sugar, water and baking soda are mixed and evaporated while the aroma slowly develops.

BITTERSWEET LOVE Divorce Chapel Here we gather at the chapel, repurposed from an abandoned warehouse. What an unfortunate existence for such a somber occasion. Friends and families convene for one last time, feeling ambivalent about which side they should sit on. Lights dimmed, guests settled, the ceremony is about to begin. The silo reveals itself as a section of what it once was, awaits the couple at the end of the aisle. Heat and emotions magnify with its stainless steel walls as the couples approach the altar. Neither spoke, but the slight glance towards each other was all that needed to be said. A crucible stands between the two literally and figuratively, ready to fuse the token of a once committed relationship, forever sealing their insipid marriage. “You may now take off your ring.” Said the pastor.

WINDOW ELEVATION “An incision on the aged bricks reveals a sharp blade, punctured through the ground, coated with care from god himself.”

15

THE LONE & WEARY The Bar Here gathers the miserables, relivers and desperates. The bar provides a fine selection of alcohols, brewed from the factory itself. A sip of it reveals a bittersweet after-taste from the infused caramel where one might wonder, perhaps this marriage might be worth it afterall.

VEIL OF TOLERANCE | THE CENSORED MATERIAL’S ARCHIVE A Reflection of Censored Materials through the Absence of Prudery

This personal project imagines a world full of hostility and captious individuals. Under this narrative, how could architecture serve as a haven to those who are being critizied and the ideas that they believe in?

The censored material’s archive provides refuge for all controversially deemed “inappropriate” works, including literature, music, sculpture, and paintings. Unlike most museums or galleries, it only invites a selected few, those who are willing to put down their prejudice and prude attitude, for the sake of knowledge and self-enlightenment. It is a place where a second chance is given to those whose works are condemned obscene or indecent, a chance to present itself to those who are willing to listen, whether they like it or not.

There is no guarantee that people would appreciate every work inside the archive, as that is not the objective. Some may agree, some might even feel disgusted. It is the encouragement in engaging controversial topics through the arts, and the respect that even the most polarizing message embedded in the arts should have the right to defend and present itself is what this project envisions, and the architecture that would cater such a program.

Literature on Censorship Rawls, John, 1921-2002 author. A Theory of Justice. Cambridge, Massachusetts :The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1971. Sandel, Michael J. 2009. Justice: what’s the right thing to do? New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

MURKY WATERS Surrounded by captious individuals and encapsulated in their conformed realm, who would be willing to rise above these treacherous waters?

19

FINALIST | ARCHITIZER ONE DRAWING CHALLENGE WITH PUBLICATION

THE CENSORED MATERIAL’S ARCHIVE “The censored materials archive situates in a world full of dogmatic opinions and polarising beliefs. It provides a space for those who are willing to give censored works a second chance by engaging and listening to one’s contentious ideas, and in return appreciating the disparity among a pluralist society.

20

Unlike conventional museums, galleries are linear with no visual connections between them. There is no alternate path, only confrontation. Spatially ambiguous galleries reflect the controversial and disputing nature of the materials. Galleries are only allowed to be entered individually, allowing visitors to examine these works without the fear of being captiously judged. The debating hall is the crucible where bonds are forged and views diverge through presenting censored materials. While heated arguments and candid reflections are conducted, autonomous machines below these galleries work endlessly in archiving and curating censored materials with their non-partisan eyes.”

ARCHIVAL FLOOR PLAN READ BY HUMANS PENCIL AND PAPER, 841MM X594MM

A typical plan depicts a section cut parallel to the ground , where hatched contour represents phyiscal objects. Tracks runs long the floor and walls of the archive and galleries.

22

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN READ BY MACHINES PENCIL AND PAPER, 841MM X594MM

Machines are designed to read the space from the ceiling plan. Inspired by barcodes, the machines maps out voids above (spaces without floor plates), generating a binary map that would illustrate the galleries location.

24

The project reflects upon the relationship between the nature of the site and the needs of the community through the speculation of the reason for it to exist, how it should be given and how it would be introduced. Through this series of questions, it allows the investigation to cover the experience one might expect through its circulation and materials, its spatial qualities through lighting and structure, and the form of the building itself. By carving out a path between the massing and reforming the site into a park, it provides a serene and isolated park that this dense residential district desperately needs.

Inspired by the Crystal Palace Swimming Pool structure, my project implements a long span truss system for the roof, minimizing the need for support columns, while freeing up the facade for natural lighting. 32

Equestrian Ridge utilizes the properties of a folded plate structure by manipulating the openings and folding so that it would respond to the climate and the occupant’s needs while being structurally viable. Situated under the hot climate of Cairns, the massing layout and porosity have been carefully designed to generate sufficient ventilation and providing thermal comfort. Visually, the white triangulated roof contrast with the mountain ridge surrounding it, a simple geometrical form hovering on a modulating landscape.

CLIMATE REPSONSE

34

Climate repsonse is the key driving factor for all the design decisions on this project. The large folded plate openings are design to capture the prevailing wind in order to cool down the interior temperature. The Polycarbonate roof provide ambient diffuse lighting into the large arena for horse riding while also extending the roof edge outwards provides shading in relation to the sun path.
