OOO about me What is most prominent about her, is first and foremost, her pure and tangible “energy”. No matter in what circumstance you meet her, she always has an aura of bliss and happiness around her. Perhaps it is generated from her very name that is loosely translated into “moonlight”; she always glows brighter than her surroundings. Mahafarid Kazemi is undoubtedly a prodigy amongst the rising stars of architectural industry. Quite a few national and even continental titles in chess at a young age, have greatly sharpened her mind to foresee the best moves ahead and today she brings the same fierce mind into play when facing an architectural challenge. She understands the value of time and diligence down to her every fiber and she peruses her goals with all her might. Her sharp and well-trained mind is accompanied by a vast heart; constituting her compassionate and powerful character. The fast problem-solving brain is only the tip of the ice-berg with her as she is well-read and well-versed in both modern and traditional arts. She has a keen eye for perfection whether it is in a musical piece she sets her mind on mastering or an urban scene she tries to portray on a piece of paper. Her passion for perusing all knowledge in the galaxy burns brightly in her eyes which makes it impossible to read what’s going on in her mind. Hence, the nickname “Aurora”; ever bright and ever shifting but leaving a vivid memory in mind. AURORA

ARTYARD, A MIXTURE OF PUBLIC, EVENT AND PROGRAMMED SPACE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 1 M.Sc Architecture -Final Score: 19.5/20 Prof : Ph.d. Mehrdad Javidnejad

Pounak district used to be a suburban place full of Trees and Gardens. Nowadays this district changes itself to educational and residential area that everyday many peoples travel here for working or educating. by increasing the number of population in this area lots of new shopping mall and markets started here but what we most need in this context is a cultural place that students can use it and a public space that people can gather and spend time together. Through analyzing this area, i found out that we need a space that contains two specific part: cultural and welfare. but a cultural place need to make money beside the main goal, so i decided to mixed these two and create a cultural-commercial place. for the lack of public space i decided to free the ground with a “ Pilote and connect the land to the city. so after that we have a great landscape for the local population and a professional art district for student and art lovers.

O PUBLIC SPACE A public space is a place that is generally open and accessible to people. Roads (including the pavement), public squares, parks and beaches are typically considered public space. To a limited extent, government buildings which are open to the public, such as public libraries are public spaces, although they tend to have restricted areas and greater limits upon use. Although not considered public space, privately owned buildings or property visible from sidewalks and public thoroughfares may affect the public visual landscape, for example, by outdoor advertising.

O EVENT SPACE

O PROGRAMMED SPACE

The term ‘Event Space’ has become commodified in recent years, and is now regularly applied to corporate entertainment venues or shopping centre food courts. However, there is an interesting and more optimistic interpretation of this concept; as a common ground or infrastructure, which can be freely used for a multitude of activities or functions. There are two apparently contradictory strands of discourse around this kind of space; one may focus almost exclusively on the political or social intent through the layering of functions or events, or almost exclusively on the phenomenological qualities of the space itself.

In architecture, a brief is a statement of a client’s requirements, which form the basis for appointing an architect. The brief describes the requirements that need to be reconciled and accommodated, and is developed first as a design which is submitted for approval, and subsequently constructed as a building or other structure. A brief is a written document that might be anything from a single page to a multiple volume set of documents. The term program is often used today, in conjunction with, and in part as a synonym of, an “architectural brief”.

O CONCEPT

In despite of the title, this project in architecture is pure function. Circulation in this type of projects are everything and also creating a pure and flexible place is important too. So at first I decided to consider and draw a diagram which shows the simple circulation of a fashion show event. little by little I found new necessities that i thought a fashion center need, Cause fashion center is a place that fashion show is just a part of it and ofcourse we need more extra functions to call it Fashion Center.

HEXAMORPH

CAAI SCHOLL OF ARCHITECTURE, PLUG-IN SYSTEMS STUDIO Semester 1 | Team Members: Mahafarid Kazemi, Navid Haji Instructor: Hooman Talebi

In the interrelaion process of the systems we have discovered how an active system and a rigid system can be plugged, while the active one aggregate itself without the deformation of the dormant system as its context and realise a new potentials of itself in the process, whilst abiding the laws of the given frame. the affiliation of the dynamic example with the static system as the base grid causes the emergence of a new and more complex body which utilizes the environment in creating new iterations of itself within that grid by changing the space pockets enclosed within itself. the synthesis of these two systems constitutes the rigid grid to have control over the attributes of the second by causing contraction in various control points and regulating the reactions. This retroaction in the geometric morph initiates changes in the plan, elevation and sections at the same time, and because of the countinuity of the active plug, we can manipulatee uniform compressions throughout these pockets, which is evident of the total affiliation of the first (active) and the second (inactive) systems. Keywords of Design Systems, Interrelation, Morph, Iteration

Main Drawing

O THE GRID CONCEPT Through explrong and playing with grids type we discovered a type of it that made from paper and the distance and the form of it could change. We tried it with different basic main shapes (Rectangle, Triangle and Polygon), with different layers, and even with different materials. So at the end we try to reread it and found how it works, But we want something more alive with a inpredictable changes, a grid that can grow and change the specifitions of space pockets that made by itself, after that we change our main cell and we reached a new system with new behaviour that can actually grow and give us new shapes with new spaces.

1

First system and cell | with predictable changes

O CHANGING THE FORM

If we want to analysis and describe our advanced cell, I can tell that at first we change the lenght of wings that connected two squares, and for reaching a better result we also mirror two pieces when we want to stick them together just like the diagram you see. We found a pattern and tried to make a system with this cell to found out how this system going to work. we made them out of papers for a better result because its available, cheap and also it is a great material when you want to fold it. When you put a little pressure on two side of this system, it suddenly fold like this diagram and acts like a stair, a flat surface in 2 dimenssional shape changes to a 3 dimentional form that full the space and change the specification of space pocket that they are inside it and connect the surfaces in different levels. As you see in this diagram we show the flat surfaces with light gray and the wings or connectors with dark gray. The surfaces are connected to each other with two sides and made a stairlook shape in 3D.

2

Second system and cell | with new space Specification and new changes

O ANALYSIS OF THE CELL For reaching new results and find the way that how this system works we start to analysis the cell in different aspects to see how the pocket spaces changes. So with our paper prototype and with remodeling cell in Rhino Software we found the behaviour of cell and we start to think that how we can use it in our architectural language these days.

O GROWTH OF SYSTEM Based on our studies we made a system prototype and put our active a flexible grid on a rigid one to check how they effect each other, as the result the rigid grid make the active one move and change by its rules and the active one fill the space of rigid grid.

1

2

O MEGA SYSTEM For checking our system in a larger scale we model some prototype by Rhino software and see how our Megasystem can effect Huge grid in 3 different situation We found out that it grows little by little and fill the rigid grid. As you can see in our section and 3d diagram the quality of space changes and we saw it as a new potenitial that we thought we can use it in our nowadays architecture and made an alive and active architure that can change its own qualities.

O MAIN GOAL As the result, here we show that how our studies can help the progress in architecture, we made a cell that can have different behaviour when it became a system or a mega system. It can change by made its foot print smaller but change the space pockets bigger, so we can make space just from a surface. As we know all cities and country around the world face the problem of area for accommodations so we think that its a great idea to have a flexible structure that can act different when ever we want and gives us different qualities of architecture to experience it.

CORRIDORS AS MEDIATORS CAAI SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, PLUG-IN SYSTEMS STUDIO Semester 2 | Team Members: Mahafarid Kazemi, Navid Haji,Laya Dadvar Instructor: Hooman Talebi

The Bond between the structures is caused by a mutual language,The construct of this language emerges of the struggle of these systems to adapt to one another. Lalehzar as an Urban Super System is Composed of the aggregation of different system layers that in light of their survival have developed a common communicative language which acts as a shared element in the bodies and holds them together like a column. these shared elements are commonly known as the staircases and the connecting corridors that flow throughout the figure and utilizes the Pluges in their Path to form a unified interior that morph these figures and their functions into a whole. “Laleh-zar is the name of a neighborhood and an old avenue in downtown old Tehran. Laleh-zar, nicknamed the champElysees of Tehran, was once the symbol of Iranian novelty and art. Most of the famous Theaters, Restuarants, Shops, Cabarets, Fashion Houses, Movie Theaters and department stores were located there. Tehran, Iran Keywords of Design Mediator, Adapt, Growth, Corridors, Systems

Main Image

O ABOUT OUR SITE Laleh-zar is a historic and famous region in Tehran. its a old neighbourhood that is popular because the different activies and destiny that it has. this district once was a private great garden that just used by king, his family and aristocrats, When Iran faced a financial problem in time of Qajar era, the king decided to sell these property to their aristocrats so he earn a good money but it caused that this huge garden take to pieces for some villas for aristocrats, and of course selling them happens many times after so the properties came even smaller. Because the wealthiness of these aristocrats they bring fashionable and new things to this area so fashion shops and some avant-garde functions start right from here like cinema and theater. The district changed to a public place for people little by little and turns to a districts for electronics objects these days.

O SEARCHING FOR PLUG-INS Based on our studio’s goal and name we start searching with the idea of plug-ins in Lalehzar, we found some light and new structures that add to the old building and change the function, expand the function or connected functions to each other, we categorized them in 3 main group as you see in these picture : 1. the boxes for expanding the place because the lack of space, 2. new buildings between the space of two old building, 3. The bridge that connect two buildings and functions. We discovered that all of them happend because they want to add a new face to old Laleh-zar and expand their places and spaces. So the face of this area is totally different than what happened inside of it, Laleh-zar changed to a thick facade that hide the real face of it, what you see these days are just a cover of what happend here in the past.

1

2

3

O CORRIDORS AS MEDIATORS

Groundfloor Plan

Through Searching over these plugins in Lalehzar, we absorb more to one of them, The bridge That connect two different building in 3rd floor with different functions. After many interviews and searching accuratly we found that The First building (Pars Cafe & Hotel) was about to developed and got bigger, in a time a new floor add to this building (2nd floor) and after that it merge itself to a new building by a bridge that connected the corridors of them, The second building (Saadi hotel) was an arcade with a typical plan which after the connection the 2nd floor changed to hotels room and act as an extension of Pars cafe & hotel. So the function flow through the bridge and corridors from a buiding to another. We see this “Gene in whole Part of this area, 4 huge buildings connected together with their corridors when they meet each other and they make a complex which are interrelate, they work with each other as a block and they are connected in different layers and floors with different functions. We named this Gene after its behaviour, Mediator. These Corridors act as mediators that can connect everything just by staying near each other.

INTERPLA[U]GO

CAAI SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, PLUG-IN SYSTEMS STUDIO Semester 3 | Team Members: Mahafarid Kazemi, Navid Haji,Laya Dadvar Instructor: Hooman Talebi

The Interrelate between buildings by corridors as mediators leads us to think that: A corridor can be more than just a single line between two pints, it can actually expand and evolve this two point and accommodate them in itself. So We decided to design a huge corridor that its not only a simple part of architecture, but also it is “The Architecture”. The Programs Flow in Building and events meet each other where ever they want so “life” back in There, In the old buildings, Connect them all and Made a Complex, An Archipelago. Based on Our studies and site Analysis this complex can act as a fashion base activities, Such as residency for artists, concept stores, fashio exhibition, workshops and clothes store that keep this complex working. So the word “ Interpla[u]go comes from three word : Interrelate, Archipelago, and Plug that describe the main idea of the project easily. Tehran, Iran Keywords of Design Interrelate, Archipelago, Plug, Complex

O LALEH-ZAR 70 YEARS AGO We studied history and many journals about old Laleh-zar, 70 years ago Laleh-zar was full of clothing and fashion stores that they spread all over the region. Some of them are still working with the past programs and some of them change to a new programs with or without changing their old name. you can see many grand children of old owners who working there but in a new job in old buildings.

O LALEH-ZAR NOWADAYS After Iran Islamic revolution Laleh-zar changed completely in a short time because some occupation that they were not allowed in Islamic Republic of Iran such as cabaretes, cafes, cinemas and etc but Laleh-zar stayed avant-garde and show it with technology, electronics shop which we have a few of them before cover the area and change this region to electronics and lighting district.

a

O PROGRAM ANALYSIS

70 yeras ago, as you can see in our chosen block, Cafe Pars and the near programs where related to each other and works together.

Nowadays, programs changed and the relation between them disappeared, they turned to different programs with totally different users that meet each other in a same place, because of the workshops the interior of Cafe pars was dying little by little and changed to a simple facade with no thickness.

We decided to give the old identity to this block, changed it to a fashion district with familiar programs that they are more related to each other and they help each other to growth, they connected to each other by corridors, which acts here as a main element of architeture, an element which contain the destinations instead of just connecting them. As

we

predicted

by

the

Architecture and programs this district acts as an archipelago by interrelating that made the “INTERPELA[U]GO

O DESIGN RESULT As the result of the project, we made huge corridors inside of this block that works like an exterior, we designed event and open spaces and even activated the rooves. An art residency placed in the hearth of block and the lost interior comes back again.

Several questions were posed when dealing with designing the project. “How can we create a complex that has influential features and, at the same time, take a critical distance from conventional stereotypes?” “How can the open space and public spaces for recreation and social life be linked to the climate and the sharp sunlight of the region?” The next question was: “How can we achieve an architecture full of imagination and freshness, given the desire of Shiraz’s people for it?” The gradual development of a new city requires a flexible and multiplying spatial structure that gradually evolves and expands over time. The structural question is raised: “How can one get rid of conventional stereotypes critically while preserving the iconic nature and effect of public spaces?”

O DEVELOPING FORM Based on the shared response to these questions, we proposed the idea of a “city within a city; To break the whole and build the urban spaces and volumes from the parts. The Sadra Civic Center project has been defined in the new town of Sadra to raise the quality of life and the cultural level of this new town. A city that has become practically a commuter town due to its proximity to the great city of Shiraz. For this reason, projects with a cultural theme are defined in one of the main axes of the city.

O DEFINING SPACES The semi-open and flexible spaces in this project, based on different social events, take on a variety of themes such as Ta’zieh (an Iranian ceremonial performative form), storytelling, music, game, etc. while a fluid network has been created for access and inclination, it provides a good shading against the sunburn of the desert and makes it possible to do such activities. Volumes that, while are from a single formal family, can have different images in spite of structural similarities, brighten up sparklers and expose their cultural spaces so that readability and diversity can be shaped in the same harmony. They also create a social and civil environment in different layers and social classes. The importance of the social aspect of the project, the numerous public spaces with a different degree of specificity (taking into account the range between the public plazas and the courtyards of the residential areas), the pavement path of the plazas, multiple event-oriented spaces, and the creation of social interaction, emphasize the idea of urban organization in the Iranian cities.

O SHADOWS & PATHS

The importance of the social aspect of the project, the numerous public spaces with a different degree of specificity (taking into account the range between the public plazas and the gardens of the residential areas), the pavement path of the plazas, multiple eventoriented spaces, and the creation of social interaction, emphasize the idea of how organizing the texture of the Iranian city.

Shadow Diagram | User Path

The ceilings are usable for human motion and interaction. The movement paths are practically formed on two levels of the ground floor and roofs so that the social and civil spatial layers in the layers of the various social classes in these courtyards and paths are formed. This, as it is clear in the section, reduces the size of excavation and embankment and contributes to the project’s economy, making it impossible to lock up residential grains under the shadow of commercial and cultural masses. It also makes the project, on the one hand, establish a proper connection with the Earth and, on the other hand, has a logical approach to the skyline.

Isometric Diagram Phases & Functions

O OUR GOALS In this project, we tried to retrieve a new citation of the central courtyard by transforming them into public and interconnected yards. We analyzed the activities required on the one hand, and the topographic features of the land, on the other hand. The grains are shaped around these permeable and pertinent courtyards, and circulation will be a series of open expanding and contracting spaces instead of a linear path. larger grains solve economic or cultural activities within themselves.

Module Model | Earthen Material The construction method was considered to be rammed earth so that materials belonging to the same site would be used. Thus, according to the geometry, the molding will be carried out, and then the natural soil will be dumped and dampened in the mold. Continuous meshing and simultaneous construction of cross walls create an integrated structural system. This will allow for the excavation to be equal to the embankment. The ability to complete the complex over time and its implementation phasing would facilitate the building of the project that fits the city’s development funding. In this project, by insisting on the refusal of representativeness and symbolism, a vernacular tone was obtained while the dynamism that flows the form into the material is familiar to the user. In this respect, we treated with an “unfamiliar familiarity” in this work. Familiar with the dynamics that stimulates our sensory perceptions and unfamiliar with being referenceless for our rational perceptions. For example, if we were faced with a set of winders or domes in a project, then the forms would have references that our rational perceptions can perceive. In Sadra Civic Center, we are confronted with a modern cubic complex with a regional layer mounted on it, rather than a regional form, which, with the critical reduction of its pluralistic components, has approached itself with a minimalist and modernist statement. The form was created as an integrated object. This project has led to an inseparable dialectic of the “new thing” and the “familiar thing.” The familiar tone of Sadra Civic Center reminds us of various things of Meybod, Kashan, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Eduardo Chillida’s Sculptures, etc. while none of them is new.

The generation gap has always been a challenging issue. On the other hand, the lifestyles in Iran can be traced back to contradictory styles of the combined social mosaic which is the city itself. It creates a kind of heterogeneous puzzle and texture of different types. This difference in the lifestyles, especially in dichotomies such as private/public, open/closed, and masculine/feminine, seems to be more intense and more acute, and their impact can be traced in the manners of architecture organization throughout the history. It mainly affects classification, the relationship between mass and void, hierarchies, and spatial sequences.

O CONCEPT

These differences have also manifested themselves in the architecture of different geographical regions of Iran. The living habits in these regions have always been influenced by religious perspectives and climatic issues. In the northern region of Iran, which is more liberal in terms of social relations, life is more intense in the public spaces, and the core of the house is surrounded by semi-open spaces such as terraces and yards. While in the central region of Iran, free space comes inside the house, and to reach that, the involute layers of mass should be passed. Just like the described situation, the cultural conflict between the two generations was a significant challenge for this project. “Safadasht Dual tried to accept these differences and simultaneously find a solution to this problem. In the design process of this project, based on differences in lifestyle, vaious organizational methods were extraced. The site of this project was comprised of two separate land plots. The client demanded a building for his religious and traditional family in the first plot; a family that held traditional Shiite ceremonies such as Muharram and Ramadhan. On the other side of the land, he wanted a building for night parties.

Model Design

Suspended Box The project, which is constructed in two distinct parts adjacent to each other, includes two buildings connected by a bridge. The first building, where bricks were used, was designed for parents, and the second building, with the main glass mat rial, is commonly used by the son (our client) as a party room. The project is also designed so that if necessary, could separate and be sold individually. The first building’s diagram is based on a central courtyard typology where the mass is formed around the yard. It emphasizes the boundary of the building with brick walls and a few openings. The second building’s diagram consists of a hard core that is surrounded by semi -open and open spaces. Here space flows under a suspended brick box, emphasizing even more on the fluidity of the space and thus the duality of the two buildings in general.

Kerman is the capital of the largest province of Iran. It is a very historic and important city as it has long been the center of trade (having the second largest historic Bazaar of Iran); it has also been a geo-politcally important city to provide national security over the south-eastern borders of the country. The eastern part of the city is located next to a mountain range which used to be secured by two castles that were never defeated or conquered in the historic days. Azadi Roundabout has long been a recognized landmark of Kerman’s urban texture. Even though there were some functional difficulties to it, The Azadi roundabout was known as the “second heart” of the city; following right after the great historic texture of the city. The heavy traffic load led the city officials to start demolitions of the old monument and flyovers to start the construction of an underpass and a new monument. O CONCEPT The design of the monument was challenging since it needed to create the possibility to tackle the aforementioned issues and also convey a sense of “Liberty” as the name “Azadi” suggests. The design team decided to create a very functional and simple method to provide the shortest routes to pedestrians and give the citizens the respect they so deserve. Hence, four large pedestrian bridges connect the main streets together; at their junction the user has to pass through the monument itself as it is the main pillar that holds the bridges together. Considering that Kerman is largely a historic city, where citizens are always entangled with traditions, rules and restrictions (politically, socially and architecturally!) the monument was designed to symbolize the freedom from these very restrictions... a dynamic movement towards a better, more liberal future. The monument is a merely a gate whose bridge crosses east to west... It is set so to create a passage from the east traditional and historic part of the city to the modern more liberated part... It is a path to a better future... The Gate of Liberation.

Moving Forward (Liberation from the past)

“Toranj” ( A Kermani Symbol)

2

Kerman’s carpet is a world renowned handicraft. Hence, for the shape of the gate and the pattern of the roundabout flooring a “Toranj” was selected. “Toranj” is a rhombus form, emerging from “Shamseh” patterns of most Kermani Carpets. It is a symbol of “radiation” and dynamic movement; a constant reminder of “Freedom”

3 The two symbols intertwined together to give birth to the final concept of design.

4

The center is moved toward east (sunrise) due to constructional issues. The axis of Jomhouri Blvd. & North are superpositioned into the landscape.

5 The main part of the pedestrian bridge passes through the monument which is held by cables emerging from the form. The intertwining cables resemble the form of an “arch”, implying that the entire monument is a gateway from east to west, from a “traditional” world to a “modern” one.

O DESIGN LAYERS The complex intertwining cables of the monument are a subtle reminder of the strings in a carpet which is among the most important handicrafts of Kerman; also implying unity for a common cause... liberty. Only through Unity, shall true Liberty be achieved! The entire design, is based on functional simplicity and respect for pedestrians. The shortest and most functional paths have been transformed into flyovers and bridges which are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

FACELESS

Tarahan Assayesh Consulting Engineers Lead Architect: Nima Mostafaei, Role: Graphic Designer & Architect & Interior Designer 2A Continental Architecture Awards, Shortlisted, Category: Competition

“Light is the origin of everything... it is a vague movement; uninterrupted future which continously reinvents the world. -Tadao Ando While facing the challenges of the project, a notion was born. An idea so simple and elegant that could not only meet the demands of the project but also breathe a sense of purpose to the entire design scenario: A Search for Identity A rather simple question was asked: What kind of architecture is private and introvert but also welcoming, climatic and humble? The answer was starring us in the face! The very identity of Iranian Vernacular Architecture in the Desert! The architecture of vernacular residential buildings of Iran in hot and arid climates such as Kerman, is simple, introvert, has a great sense of privacy and it overcomes the challenge posed by the harsh sunlight so elegantly. It sits so peacefully within the desert; with a minimal and humble appearance. Kerman, Iran Keywords of Design Light, Introvert, Private, Climate

O CONCEPT The facade of such buildings is so void of imposing elements and blends so smoothly with the surroundings that they seem somewhat “facade-less” or perhaps in another sense of the matter “faceless”. It is only when you step inside them that you begin to appreciate all that they have to offer. They hide a priceless gem within them. An introvert “oasis” in the heart of their architecture; one second you our outside facing the unforgiving desert; another, you are surrounded by a cool, welcoming garden right in the middle of the building. The only part of the facade thats stands out and has any ornamental design is the entrance; and that is to show the welcoming nature of the architecture.

The elevation is consisted of two paris: a tall wall that acts as the view blocking view facade and a perforated screen in front of green life. The structural consule creates a seventy-centimeter gap for planting grren life; which is wide enough for even trees to grow. This “Transparency control” lets the user enjoy the sunlight without having privacy issues. The detail is made of bricks which allows light into the bathroom but block the view.

The facade is comprised of two barriers: one made of concrete,
