‘Raise The EID IN THE TIME OF FLOODS Ambition Of The Nation’
George Osborne has said Britain can no longer afford to be a country where £100bn is spent on paying benefits for those of working age. Announcing a two-year freeze on benefits for those who could be working, Mr Osborne said: "Families out of work should not get more than the average family in work." He said that benefits had risen more than earnings "since Labour's Great Recession" and more had to be done to drive down welfare costs, which accounted for a third of all Government spending. Mr Osborne added the move would save the country £3bn and hinted there would be a further £9bn of welfare cuts to be announced in the run up to the General Election.
The Chancellor insisted the Tories' "long-term economic plan is working" as he attempted to outline a choice for voters between the Conservative's "economic competence" and a Labour that would return to country to the downturn of recent years. He stressed the Government had reduced the deficit by nearly half since coming to power. Mr Osborne's other key announcement was scrapping the so-called "death tax" on pension pots with immediate effect. It will mean those who have saved into their pensions will no longer pay the 55% tax if they wish to pass the money to their families. The "death tax" cut will cost the Treasury an estimated £150m - the equivalent of just a 0.03p cut in income tax - but it will appeal to older voters who are more likely to be swayed by Nigel Farage's party. However, it has emerged Mr Osborne had been the one to increase the tax from 35% to 55% and had already suggested it in the Autumn Statement.
The devastating floods in Pakistan that have made thousands of families homeless will certainly affect Eid for these displaced people. The government has announced that their complete rehabilitation will be started after thorough estimation of the damages. As of now flood affected people will be given Rs25,000 before Eid so that they do not feel left out in such a special occasion. They may not be able to buy back their lost belongings but the feeling that they have been thought of will make them happy during Eid. It is hoped that the government will further work for their complete rehabilitation with zest, sincerity and as a priority.

Over 46,000 South Yorkshire Children Tuck Into A Free Lunch At the beginning of the school year, Sheffield welcomed the news that over 46,000 children in the region would be tucking into a free lunch thanks to the Liberal Democrats. It is estimated that the numbers of children who are benefiting include 18,175 in Sheffield, 10,805 in Doncaster, 9,516 in Rotherham and 8,105 in Barnsley. Schools in England have been provided

The notices will read: “Parking on the pavement and blocking the footpath can be dangerous for pedestrians, particularly with pushchairs or in wheelchairs, who are forced into the road. “Please consider others when parking your vehicle.” Wardens and police can fine drivers whose parking blocks a footpath so people cannot

Coun Bramall added: “We appreciate that in a city such as Sheffield it is sometimes impossible to avoid parking with two wheels on the pavement. “There are many steep and narrow streets, and sometimes parking fully on the road could prevent other traffic getting through. “But what we’re asking for is that bit of extra consideration for all users of the roads and pavements in our city.”

Labour Will ‘Increase Minimum Wage To £8 An Hour’ If Elected Next Year Labour leader Ed Miliband has pledged to raise the national minimum wage to at least £8 an hour if he becomes Prime Minister next year. The minimum wage is due to rise from £6.31 an hour to £6.50 on October 1, but Mr Miliband plans to add £1.50 an hour on to that by 2020. The increase would add around £60 a

Rotherham Improvement Board Membership Announced Details of a partnership board set up to steer further improvement by Rotherham Borough Council following the publication of the Alexis Jay report have been announced. Rotherham Council Leader Cllr Paul Lakin committed to setting up the board in partnership with the Local Government Association (LGA) as part of a package of improvement measures announced by the Council following the publication of the Independent Inquiry into child sexual exploitation. Independently-chaired and
drawing on cross-party membership, the Board will provide oversight, support and challenge to the authority’s improvement and transformation journey and – in due course – will respond to the findings of forthcoming inspections by both Ofsted and the Department for Communities and Local Government. Cllr Paul Lakin said: “We owe the survivors of child sexual exploitation nothing less than our pledge to do everything we can to better protect young
people in the future. “We know public confidence in our services is rightly shaken and we are determined to win it back by our actions”. This independently-chaired Board is made up of highly experienced officers and elected members from across the country and will guide and challenge improvement plans over the coming months. It’s vital that Rotherham is given the appropriate support to ensure previous failures to protect young people are not allowed to happen again.

The Chancellor’s speech was largely seen as an attempt to seize back ground made by UKIP and to steady the ship after two Conservative defections and the resignation of the Minister for Civil Society over a sex pictures scandal at the weekend.

What Now For UK?
Work has started on a £40m new wing to provide Sheffield Children's Hospital with "world class" facilities. The block will have three 24bed wards - two surgical and one medical. It will also have a specialist burns unit. Work on the development, on the Western Bank site, should take three years, according to the hospital. The government is to provide half of the money with fundraising providing the balance, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust said. The wing will include rooms for children who need to be isolated to prevent infections, such as bone
Millions have had their say and the prospect of an independent Scotland is off the cards - but the story is far from over. Scotland has rejected independence. So what happens now, and can we all still be friends? 1) What new powers will Scotland get? David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband have all promised Scotland will get some although we don't yet know exactly what they are. Gordon Brown has set out a 12-point plan and will be drawing up the Home Rule deal. Remember Scotland already makes its own laws in a number of areas including health and social services, education, and law and order. 2) When will it get them?
up a "new and fair settlement" for the whole of the UK. This new "devolution revolution" will also mean England's MPs will get a greater say in English matters. 7) Will Scotland carry on getting a greater allocation of wealth than England under the Barnett Formula?
It seems so. Mr Cameron, Mr Clegg and Mr Miliband have said the method for allocating the UK wealth will continue. Scotland does a lot better out of it than England. Northern Ireland comes out top. It's unpopular and even the man who came up with it, Labour peer Lord Barnett, has said it's outdated. English MPs are not happy and it remains to be seen if it will be altered under the new deal. However, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Work will start straight away. Mr Brown has Danny Alexander says he thinks it is good for the secured a House of Commons debate on October whole of the UK. 16 and a command paper is expected at the end of that month. A draft new law will be drawn up by January 25, 2015 - Burns Night - but this will not be passed until after the General Election. 3) Will there be another referendum? No, at least not any time soon. Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has said he will accept the result and has no appetite for another vote. However, the issue of independence has cropped up once or twice before. 4) Will Scottish people pay less tax than England?
8) Will Scottish MPs still be able to vote on English matters?
Scotland's 59 MPs can vote on any issues in They could, yes. The new powers will give Westminster - even swaying votes on matters that will not affect their constituents - but English MPs cannot vote on powers devolved to Scotland. Mr Cameron has promised that this "question of English votes for English laws" will be addressed and that the "millions of voices of England must be heard". 9) Can England have its own parliament now? Maybe. A growing number of MPs are calling for an English parliament, led in the main by Tory MP John Redwood. However, it will Scotland more power over setting income tax. clearly be part of the talks in the coming months. Holyrood already has power to vary income tax Leader of the House of Commons William Hague by 3p above or below the rest of the UK (set to rise to 10p in 2016). It's never used them. 5) Will Scotland get better benefits? Potentially, yes. It's likely the new powers will give Scottish Parliament more say on housing benefit, which could see it scrap the unpopular so-called "bedroom tax". 6) Will Wales and Northern Ireland want a slice of the cake? will be drawing up plans on powers for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Expect rival Labour Yes - and David Cameron has indicated that they and Lib Dem versions. will get more powers and will be part of drawing 10) Can England and Scotland still be friends? Expect initial hostilities after the slings and arrows of a fairly feisty campaign but take comfort from history. The two nations have had their differences but have rubbed along for centuries. And there's always football - the two countries meet in a 'friendly' in November.

SHEFFIELD CHILDRENS HOSPITAL £40m NEW WING WORK STARTS marrow transplant patients, according to the trust. The building will also include en-suite facilities to allow parents to stay with their child. The trust said £3m of the total cost had come from community fundraising, with £7m still needed. A further £10m is being raised via national fundraising. Sheffield Children's Hospital was first established in 1876 and has provided services under the NHS since 1948. In 2013-14 it admitted almost 31,000 patients and more than 172,000 attended the hospital.
REGIONS UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES REVEALED Unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber fell by 25,000 in the three months to July, official figures have revealed. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that a total of 203,000 people were unemployed in the region between May and July. The region's unemployment rate was 7.3% and saw a fall of 11% during the period. The worst area in the UK was the South West which recorded a 17,000 increase in the number of people without a job. The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance has fallen below one million for the first time in six years, new figures showed. The claimant
count fell for the 22nd month in a row in July by 37,200 to 966,500, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This is the first time the figure has been below one million since September 2008. The jobless total is now 468,000 fewer than a year earlier, the largest annual fall in unemployment since 1988. Average earnings including bonuses rose by 0.6% in the year to July, while average earnings excluding bonuses were 0.7% higher. There are now 30.61 million people in work, 74,000 more than February to April, the smallest quarterly increase since April to June 2013.
PLEDGE TO TACKLE SHEFFIELD HOSPITALS WAITING LIST Hospital chiefs in Sheffield have promised to bring long waits for patients under control from next month – following concern over the number of people waiting over 18 weeks. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has missed the official target to see 95 per cent of outpatients within 18 weeks for
more than six months. But, according to the most recent figures, the trust narrowly missed the standard in July, seeing just over 94 per cent on time. In total, 12,444 outpatients needed treatment that month, with 11,730 seen within 18 weeks.
Giant Spiders to Invade UK Homes Millions of giant spiders are invading UK homes. The warm autumn weather has provided bounteous food supplies for spiders, in the form of flies and bugs. And as the mating season arrives, many will wander into people's homes in search of a partner. It means spiders are "appearing a little bigger than average perhaps". Falling temperatures will also lead spiders to find warmth indoors. But until autumn they will stay on their webs, until they leave to find mates. The vast majority of spider species in the UK are not venomous, but if one has the misfortune to be bitten by a
poisonous specie, it is unlikely to lead to anything worse than a rash. The house spider can give you a nip but only if you disturb it or pick one up. The
venom has a negligible effect. Even the bite of the False Widow — the most venomous spider in Britain — is not as bad as a bee or wasp sting.

MCC Ease to Victory MCC eased to victory in the advertiser cup to take the winning cup. It was arguably a well deserved win against Consibrough with the margin of victory by nine wickets. It was the second time MCC had lifted the trophy – the previous success coming three years ago when they beat Shaheen. Conisbrough, with some good players in their ranks, were also strong opponents but didn’t carry quite the same clout on the Clifton Lane Track. They posted 145-5, with Paul Hemmingway playing some lovely shots in his 73 not out. Gary Strephen chipped in with 23 and the pick of the bowlers was Shahid Nasir with 2-8. MCC made light of the runs chase and in Usman and Rahoul they had two men in cup-winning form. Rahoul stroked 57 of a tally of 146-1 but it was Usman who took the man of the match award for his 55 not out as the celebrations started. Advertiser Cup winners MCC have also been in free-scoring form in the Merryweathers midweek League. They piled up 202-5 against Division One rivals Wickersley on the back of big knocks from Usman (70), Kamran (54), and Zulfiqar (52) before holding the reply to 164-7 (Mohammad Naveed 49, Matt Burton 48). MCCs 180 (Rizwan Ali 66) also proved too much for Mexborough, who were 159 all out in reply.
2014 – Hottest year on record? The year 2014 is poised to become the warmest year ever measured, suggests new data released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The combined temperature of June, July and August has been unprecedented in historical records, said the NOAA data, suggesting that Earth’s oceans reached a level last month not seen since humans have been keeping comprehensive weather data.
“Global ocean temperatures in August 2014 warmed to the largest departure from average for any month on record,” according to a NOAA statement. The previous record was set in June 2014. If the next four months rank among the five warmest on record, 2014 will be the warmest on record for the globe. Having an El Nino would increase the chances of 2015 starting out much warmer than average, and approaching record or near record warmth.

RULE OF LAW A good measure of development in a country is how well the rules of law are followed. All religions, social ideologies and systems around the world have rules so that society can prosper and grow in the right direction. Although there are many freedoms, the rules, limits and guidelines give a framework which we follow to function and respect each other. The rule makers and implementers are generally good people with good intentions. They lay down the laws for the benefit of the people. Every now and then, problems do occur. They occur because of the rule breakers. Whether rules are social or religious, to follow them is essential for all. Good governance is displayed when punishments act as a deterrent and anyone who does break the law is effectively punished to set an example for the rest of society to not follow that same behaviour. This is a sign of good justice and good governance. Without justice, any country or nation will rot away. Therefore a good justice system is an essential of any society, government and religion. It is the most important pillar. In Islam, justice is one of the highest attributes of Allah. Anyone who is not just towards others is denying this position of Allah and Islam. As a principle, Muslims are in favour of justice and against any kind of abuse or oppression, be it in society, of religion, towards a person, or abusing any laws. But just our favouring of justice is not enough, neither is only condoning injustice. There is no justice until the rule makers, the implementers, and the judges, who are making the decisions, cannot do justice equally to all beings. How can the rules be effective unless they who provide the law do not fully uphold it themselves?
www.ilmnews.com
This shows weakness in the system. As a good human being everyone is bound to speak the truth and be equal and do justice. We live with understanding and cooperation with people or all religions, race, and ability. Any society is diverse but the differences that are being born as a result of failure by the rule makers show they have failed in these areas. Freedom without defining its boundaries leads to failure. The Rotherham abuse case has caused much backlash towards the admistration, moreso than the cruel criminals. The fact that the case was finally brought to light after 13 years, gives us great cause for concern. How long would this have gone on for if the victims hadn’t come forward or if the case had never come to a prosecution. Again we ask the question of why the system is not near perfection by ignoring the abuse? If anyone can act according to their own wishes and to their own understanding for their own gain, then their personal gain might be admired by a few undesirables, but we have to remember that another person is being harmed in the process for selfish gain. If we send a donkey to guard a load of beans then the result will be obvious. If the right people are not in the right jobs in the first place, again the result will be obvious. And if the lack of punishments seems attractive rather than acting as a deterrent then again the result will be obvious, hence an increase in crime. Hence we see that the courts have failed for things like this to go on for so long. It’s also useful to add that time may be of the essence. The sooner a crime is investigated and punished, the more successful the prosecution. The fact that cases are reopened after 13 years shows a serious
ILM OPINION failure. The reasons we have been told show a serious lack of failings, incompetence and miscommunication from those with responsibilities for safeguarding children and youngsters. Even after 13 years the criminals should be given the maximum sentence. But what of the institutions and people who have failed in their roles. Have they discredited the system or was the system already flawed? We don’t actually know how deep the flaws lie but the 13 year old investigation from the start has looked dirty, and with it has taken the decision makers, the justice system, and the community down with it. The biggest question we ask is whether at the time when the abuse became known, at the time were the institutions weak? Were the investigators weak? Was the police force weak? Was the evidence weak, was the council weak? Were the social services weak? Or was the justice system weak? Who at that time was not making the correct decisions and why? There are many questions and further enquiries need to find the weakest link. To blame one specific community for these shortcomings is the biggest failure of all. We only need to look at the medias portrayal of the case and the headlines in the tabloids. As members of a developed society we rely on the administration to give us answers. We never applaud any kind of oppression or crime. But we depend on preventative measures and swift justice for victims in order to keep the peace in society. The outcome of the situation is that justice was finally served for the long suffering victims, the weaknesses in the system will be exposed, and the disgusting gang of criminals is behind bars.
UK Introduces Halal Loans For Students
Seeking to boost the Muslim student population at British university, the UK government is developing sharia-compliant loans, the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) has said in a report published on its website. The announcement came after four months of consultations on the so-called “Shariacompliant Alternative Finance Product.” The consultations focused on gauging the opinions of Muslim students, the Muslim community and the general public in the UK, according to the report. The “Takaful” Islamic finance
model was selected as a potential product to be offered to Muslim students. Students taking part in the Takaful model “would not be borrowing money and paying it back with interest to a third party, which would not be compliant with Sharia law,” according to the government response. “Instead the Takaful fund will be established with an initial amount of money that can be donated to the fund or on the basis of Qard Hasan (interestfree loan) and based on a concept of mutual participation and guarantee.” The rise of tuition fees in since
2012 has affected the way loans are paid back. The current student loans carry an interest rate of Retail Price Index (RPI) +3 per cent. The interest rate during repayment is based on income and is between RPI and RPI + 3 per cent. The government’s consultation on the new student Muslim loan product had more than 20,000 responses. The government said it has been “working with the Bank of Britain and other Islamic finance experts to develop the Takaful model as a potential alternative to conventional student loans.”
Cemetery Shortage Some of Sheffield’s 12 cemeteries have only enough graves to last for the next 10 years. Burncross cemetery has 50 graves free, while Intake has 75 plots remaining. Beighton cemetery has just 130. There are 180 graves left at Woodhouse. Concerns have been raised nationally about Britain’s cemeteries running out of burial plots – and Sheffield Council is already examining whether extra space will be necessary here in the future. Independent Funeral Directors based in Intake said: “Christian families will put several families in one plot. But when it is a Muslim burial only one person can be placed in a plot. Muslims also can’t be cremated, they
have to be buried, and the lack of graves will be a major problem in the long term”. In London now they are talking about reusing graves. If a family plot has not been used for 100 years they will dig that out. Maybe the day will come when they are reusing graves in Sheffield. There are so many graves which nobody visits in City Road – there are headstones that have fallen down. Burial space at larger cemeteries, such as City Road which has 1,300 graves remaining, will last for between 20 and 30 years – although the smaller sites have only an estimated 10 to 20 years remaining. In total, 7,240 graves are left in Sheffield’s 12
cemeteries, according to data. Burngreave, Darnall and Norton cemeteries have been full for decades, and there is space for more than 1,500 graves at Stocksbridge. A Sheffield Council spokesman said: “Sheffield Council is fully committed to ensuring there are sufficient new grave spaces available across the city. “We have already begun work on this, by identifying the availability of space at each cemetery and considering if additional space may be necessary in the future. “Burials account for approximately 30 per cent of all bereavements, and we are confident we can meet the demand for new burial plots over the coming decades and beyond.”

EDUCATION AND HIGH STORRS The Importance of Parents Evenings any letters from school. Some parents, especially those of hard working, well-behaved or able students, think that there is no point in attending these events. Four new 20mph zones in Sheffield
A 20 mph zone in Nether Edge More 20mph zones are set to get the green light in four residential areas of Sheffield – with an estimated cost of more than £90,000. Councillors are due to consider a report which sets out support for and objections to new zones in Heeley and Meersbrook, Longley, Southey Green and the Warren Lane part of Chapeltown. Reports say 60 people in Heeley and Meersbrook have expressed support for the limit. Comments listed include: “Children play out in the streets, and there are also lots of cyclists, and to my mind it’s important to prioritise safety over speed.” But a taxi driver has called the council twice to say the proposal is ‘too slow for residential roads and each driver should be responsible for their actions’. In Longley

one person said it was a ‘waste of public money’, the council was ‘a nt i - car ’, and most people w o u l d i g n o r e the limit a ny way. A woman with a disabled husband in Southey Green backed the proposal as he struggled to cross roads because of speeding traffic. The council says reducing the speed of traffic will reduce the number of accidents and their severity in the long term. Over the last 12 months seven 20mph zones have been introduced. And a third of all residential streets are set to have the limit by the end of 2015/16, partly through zones introduced before the council’s new speed limit strategy. More sign-only zones are expected to be implemented over the coming months. Reports say introducing the four new zones would make ‘further strides’ towards the aim of creating 20mph as the ‘default speed’ in residential areas.
National research found around 2,000 additional children per year– 5 a day – die in the UK compared to Sweden. Over three quarters of injury deaths in 10-18 year olds are due to traffic incidents. Reducing the national speed limit in built up areas to 20mph is a key recommendation for child protection to cut the source of daily road risk. More than 80% of child road casualties occur on 30mph limited streets. As well as these direct safety gains, 20mph limits promote health & wellbeing in many other ways: •By encouraging a shift to walking & which reduces obesity & heart disease •Lower emissions promote healthier lungs •Increased mobility for children & the disabled, elderly or dementia sufferers delivers gains in health & self esteem •Better inclusion & access to society for non-car owners & greater equality for the poor •Up to 50% reduction in noise from road traffic •Less congestion from ‘school run’ & other trips as people choose to move from car-based journey to more active ones by walking & cycling. •Increased social cohesion & less loneliness as people talk to each other far more on less traffic dominated streets.

Miliband Sets Six Goals For Britain’s Future Ed Miliband has set out six national goals for the coming decade as he attempted to show voters he has what it takes to be Prime Minister. In his last party conference speech before the general election, the Labour leader said the country must look to build a new future "together" because it could not afford "another five years of David Cameron". The Labour leader put saving the NHS at the heart of his 10year plan, saying a mansion tax on properties over £2m and taxes on the tobacco firms would be used to pay for it. He said the country needed to change because it "does not work" and talked about

‘One Million Babies’ Created By EU Student Exchanges The Erasmus student exchange scheme has brought so many couples together from across the continent that it has led to the birth of one million babies, according to the EU. A study of the programme’s impact since its launch in 1987 showed that 27% of people who took part had met their current life partner during their stay abroad. Thirty-three percent of Erasmus students
hooked up with people of a different nationality than their own, nearly three times the rate of students who had not travelled. But the EU insisted the program achievements went beyond spawning dual-nationality babies — creating jobs as well as population growth. With unemployment affecting one in five young people in a
Europe increasingly gripped by economic stagnation, the EU said the Erasmus scheme also played a vital role in increasing the job prospects of students who took part. Erasmus involves the 28 European Union states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. In total, three million students and 350,000 teachers have taken part in the scheme, the EU said.

PIA To Be Split Into Two, Gulf Airlines May Buy Core Business Pakistan plans to split ailing national flag carrier PIA into two companies and sell control of the core business to a global airline over the next 18 months, but political opposition to the sell-off will be intense. Financial advisers are now in talks with several airlines about taking over cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines , which has some 17,000 employees but just 36 aircraft - and 10 of them are grounded due to a lack of spare parts. No decision had been taken on the buyer, but Emirates Airline, Etihad and Qatar Airways - the Gulf giants that dominate the regional sector are possibilities. For 25 years PIA has been going from bad to worse and the government is unable to keep funding it. Pakistan also announced it will seek to raise about $815 million through a sale of shares in Oil & Gas Development Co (OGDC), its largest offering in eight years. The OGDC sale is part of a selloff drive to raise capital for an economy that has been crippled

Losses of power distribution companies alone are equivalent to one-sixth of the government's fiscal revenues. Next on the block will be the government's 40 percent stake in Habib Bank Ltd, which will be sold in two stages between November and next March, for around $1.2 billion. Also ahead is the sale, targeted at domestic investors, of the
state's 7.5 percent stake in Allied Bank Ltd, for around $150 million. Once a source of pride for the country, PIA's decay has made it the butt of jokes, one of which goes that its initials actually stand for 'Perhaps I'll Arrive'. Flights are regularly cancelled and engineers say they have to cannibalise some planes to keep others flying. PIA's employee-to-aircraft ratio, at around 600, is one of the worst in the world and keeps going up as more planes are grounded.
Car Insurance: New Rules To Reduce Costs A regulator has published new rules it hopes will boost competition to help bring down the cost of premiums in the UK's £11bn private motor insurance market. The clampdown may knock up to £20 off a typical bill under the Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) plan. Among its headline measures is a ban on agreements between price comparison websites and insurers that prevent companies making their products available more cheaply online. The CMA also demanded better information for consumers on the costs and benefits of noclaims bonus protection. But

MOM was launched from the Bay of Bengal in November 2013 and is expected to circle the red planet for at least six months on an elliptical path that will see it get within 365km of the surface at its closest point. The success of the Mars Orbiter Mission, lauded for its low price tag of $74m (£45m), will boost India's five-decade-old space programme that newly-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to expand with better technology. And its arrival led to a humorous exchange on Twitter between the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Mars Orbiter and Nasa's 2012

Their is currently a lack of action on the cost of postaccident services to drivers who are not at fault in an accident, in particular temporary replacement cars. So far their is no effective way of addressing this problem fully short of a fundamental change in the law, so meanwhile this problem does increase premiums for motorists.
Wembley Stadium Wins Bid To Host Euro 2020 Semis And Final Wembley will host the final and semi-finals of the 2020 European Championships, Uefa has announced. Hampden Park in Glasgow and the Aviva Stadium in Dublin will host three group matches and a last16 tie in the tournament, which for the first time is being played in cities across the continent rather than being hosted by one or two countries. The result of the vote by members of Uefa’s executive committee brought disappointment to Cardiff, with the Millennium Stadium overlooked in favour of Hampden. ‘Hijab Instils Positive Body Image’
JUSTICE MUST BE SEEN TO BE DONE IN PRESIDENT MUSHARAF’S HIGH TREASON CASE BARRISTER AZAR IQBAL UK HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER
British Muslim women who wear a hijab (headscarf) generally have a more positive body image, are less reliant on media messages about beauty ideals and place less importance on appearance than those who do not wear a hijab, says a research study. These effects appear to be driven by use of a hijab specifically, rather than by religion. While we should not assume that wearing the hijab immunises Muslim women from negative body image, results do suggest that wearing the hijab may help some women reject prescriptive beauty ideals. Participants of this study were
587 Muslim women, aged 1870 years, recruited from the community in London. A number of different ethnic groups were represented in the study, namely, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian and Arabs. In terms of marital status, the majority of participants were single. Researchers found that participants who wore the hijab had lower weight discrepancy, body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness than women who did not wear the hijab. Overall, the present results are consistent with previous work suggesting that women who wear non-
western forms of dress have more positive indices of body image than women who wear Western dress. The findings have useful implications for intervention programmes aimed at promoting healthier body image among Muslim women in the West. For example, by identifying those aspects of hijab use that are associated with more positive body appreciation in future studies, it might be possible to isolate factors that can be targeted in intervention programmes. The paper was published in the British Journal of Psychology.
Thousands Of Muslim Marriages ‘Not Legal’ A legal expert says that thousands of Muslims marriages conducted in the UK are not legal. The claim comes as part of a documentary exploring the issue of “thousands of British Muslim
As President Musharaf is charged with High treason it is an opportunity for the Pakistani Judiciary to demonstrate that it can deliver justice without any hindrance, political interference and must be seen to be independent from the executive. Historically judicial process in Pakistan has been maligned with allegations of ineptness, political favouritism and corruption. President Musharaf’s case if handled fairly and impartially can vindicate the judiciary and give credibility to due process and justice in Pakistan. On the one hand the case can propel the nation by giving hope to the masses that no one is above the law. If the matter is mismanaged and not seen to be fair on the other hand, will send Pakistani justice and hopes of millions to the abyss. These are turbulent times for Pakistan and the international community is watching with an acute eye. Pakistan is a signatory to and has ratified the United Nations International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights (‘ICCPR’ or ‘the Covenant’). It has a duty when prosecuting President
Musharaf to uphold the rights protected by the Covenant. Article 14 of the ICCPR provides that a) all persons shall be equal before the courts and tribunals b) Everyone charged with a criminal offence shall have the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law c) In the determination of any criminal charge against him, every one shall be entitled to minimum guarantees, in full equality. The Human Rights Committee which is tasked with upholding the provisions of the ICCPR has held, ‘The impartiality of the court and the publicity of proceedings are important aspects of the right to a fair trial within the meaning of Article 14(1). ‘Impartiality’ of the court implies that judges must not recognise preconceptions about the matter put before them, and that they must not act in ways that promote the interests of one of the parties. The protection of the rights of an accused person is even more important and demands an even higher standard of procedural safeguards and guarantees in cases that potentially carry the death penalty.
The Judiciary must now rise above the parapet and deliver justice upon which the foundations of Pakistan were laid. As the founder of Pakistan Quaid e Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah said “My guiding principle will be justice and complete impartiality, and I am sure that with your support and co-operation, I can look forward to Pakistan becoming one of the greatest Nations of the world.”( Quaid e Azam in his Presidential Address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on 11th August, 1947). Education is the building block of any prosperous and enlightened society. Youngsters should concentrate on making a better future for themselves by positively engaging in and seeking opportunities that will not only give them a better quality of life but will also carry the hopes and aspirations of an entire community. By instilling seeds of education from an early age they would reap the benefits for decades to come. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” Malcolm X

£174m Lost To Credit Card Frauds A record £174.5 million was lost on cards due to fraudulent internet, telephone or mail order purchases in the first half of this year, new figures show. The growing trend of internet shopping has helped to push up the figure to the biggest halfyearly total ever recorded by Financial Fraud Action UK, which prevents crime on behalf of the financial services industry. Within the latest half-year total, e-commerce fraud loss is estimated to be £110 million, marking a 23% jump compared with the first six months of 2013. Meanwhile, online banking fraud losses have surged by 71% compared with the first half of 2013. Some £29.3 million was lost due to online banking fraud between January and June this year. The fraudster typically tricks the victim into revealing personal

information such as their online banking details and their Pin. In some cases, the victim is duped into transferring money into another account or allowing a courier to collect their card in the belief that it is being returned to the bank, whereas in fact it is being delivered straight to the criminal. Recent research among more than 2,000 people found that one quarter (25%) do not take steps to challenge the identity of a cold caller, rising to more than one third (34%) of 18 to 24-yearolds. Three quarters of Britons (74%) now turn to the internet to do their shopping, according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), while 76% of the population is estimated to go online every day. The body also said that fraud on
contactless cards which allow people to pay for low value items by swiping their card on a reader continues to be "negligible". Some £51,000 was lost on contactless cards over the first six months of the year, representing just 0.007% of all contactless spending. Cheque fraud continued its longterm decline, with losses falling by 34% compared with the first half of 2013. Some £10.5 million was lost due to cheque fraud in the first six months of this year. Be very suspicious of phone calls, texts or emails which come out of the blue asking for personal or financial details, regardless of who they claim to represent. Be aware of warning signs: your bank will never ask you for your four-digit Pin, to transfer or withdraw money, or to give your card to a courier.

Streets Ahead Celebrates Second Anniversary Streets Ahead is transforming and improving Sheffield’s roads, pavements and streetscene. The 25 year programme has celebrated its second anniversary with the announcement that nearly 250 miles of road have been resurfaced along with more than 300 miles of pavements and footpath and that over 22,000 pot holes have been repaired, not including those that have been completely removed on the new roads. In addition, street cleaning

Streets Ahead is the biggest project of its type in the country. Cllr Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene, said: “We are very proud of the Streets Ahead project and delighted to be celebrating our 2nd anniversary. Over the past two years we have seen what a huge difference the project is making across the city.
We see better lighting; smoother roads and pavements and an improving streetscene across all of Sheffield. I know the state of Sheffield’s roads is a problem and that’s why it’s so important we continue this work. Work does cause people inconvenience but once the first five years of the contract are over, the city and its residents will be able to enjoy the benefits of smooth roads and pavements, brighter and more energy efficient LED lighting and improved road drainage.”

Victims Of Crime Being Forced To Become ‘DIY Detectives’ High-volume offences such as criminal damage or vehicle crime are “on the verge of being decriminalised” by police forces which have given up investigating them, a policing watchdog has warned. In a new report, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) said this “mindset” had led to a concerning trend of asking victims to turn DIY detectives and carry out
investigations themselves. Victims of high-volume offences like vehicle crime and “burglaries of properties other than dwellings” are asked questions by call-handlers to assess the likelihood of the crime being solved, inspectors found. In some forces this included asking victims to check if there was CCTV or fingerprint evidence available, as well as requesting victims interview
their neighbours and check second-hand sales websites to see if their property was being sold. Attendance rates at crime scenes in the year to November 2013 varied widely between forces from 39% in Warwickshire to 100% in Cleveland. Theresa May has cut more police officers than any other country in Europe. With 16,000 gone, the thin blue line is being stretched ever thinner.
7 Unnecessary Causes of Stress
Everyone feels overwhelmed and stressed from time to time, but if you’re not careful, even small stressors can end up damaging your health. While stress is a natural part of being human, many common stressors are not worth our physical and mental energy. Below are seven unnecessary causes of stress, read on…
future. We worry about these things when we don’t really know what is going to happen. One way to combat worstcase-scenario thinking is to consider whether the stressor is realistic and whether it will bother you in the future.
3. Procrastination Everyone procrastinates for different reasons, but in many cases, people put things off because they feel overwhelmed by or scared of what they need to do. This can create frustration and stress. Come up with a plan to tackle a challenging project in stages, rather than all at once. When you 1. 1.5m Children At Risk Of Leaving Primary School Unable ‘To Read Well’ Around 1.5 million children will have left primary school unable to “read well” by 2025 if urgent action is not taken to tackle the issue, according to research. It warns that progress in improving children’s reading levels has been too slow in the past, with poor youngsters most at risk of being left behind. The study has been published by a group of leading charities, teachers, parents and businesses, which is launching a new campaign to ensure that by 2025, all pupils are reading to a good standard at age 11. Reading with a child for just 10 minutes a day - even reading from the back of a cereal packet - can make a difference, the group suggested. While many schools and communities have made good
progress in helping children read well in recent years, if we continue as we currently are, we will still fall a long way short of all children reading well by the age of 11 by 2025. Business as usual is not an option. Children living in poverty are less likely to be able to read well
at school than their classmates, the report says, adding that while there has been some progress in the last decade this has been too slow and more must be done. The coalition’s analysis of government figures for England concludes if the same rate of progress in reading seen over the last 10 years continues, by 2025 almost one in five youngsters will still not be reading well. Youngsters who cannot read well at age 11 also struggle to understand the wider meaning behind stories and information, and may not be able to read a range of materials, such as magazines and newspapers and websites, the coalition said. The campaign is urging all political parties to support the 2025 target.
Apple’s Iphone 5 Is The ‘Top Target For Thieves’ Apple’s latest iPhones have topped the list of handsets most likely to be targeted by thieves. The iPhone 5 was named the phone most likely to be stolen in a new Government consumer study. In fact, Apple products filled the top four places of the Home Office’s Mobile Phone Theft Ratio. The Blackberry 9790 snuck in at number five. Samsung and HTC phones also won a spot in the top 10. The level of mobile phone theft remains a concern and people are increasingly carrying their lives in their pockets, with bank details, emails and other sensitive personal information

easily accessible through mobile phones. The list, published by Home Secretary Theresa May, analysed theft data from August 2012 to January 2014. According to a crime survey for England and Wales, some 742,000 phones were stolen in the 2012/2013 period. The
Metropolitan Police reported almost 100,000 mobile phone thefts in London alone during 2013. Data showed people are most likely to have their phones stolen directly from their person, through pickpocketing, or when the handset is briefly left unattended, for example at a table in a bar. 14 to 24-year-olds, and particularly women, are more likely than any other group to be victims of mobile phone theft. The mobile phone industry is already taking vital action to introduce features that enable phones to be tracked and wiped if they are stolen.
6. Clutter in Your Home or Office Clutter is a representation of how you’re feeling and what’s going on in your own life. So it’s no wonder that a messy room or a cluttered office can make us feel stressed. De-clutter one step at a time – an approach that's similar to methods for handling procrastination. Another reason some people may let clutter take over is because they don’t know what to do with the space. Visualise what you want the space to look like. That will help motivate you as well. 7. Worrying About Money You've Already Spent Thinking about money you’ve already spent is a form of dwelling on the past. Continuously turning your spending habits over in your mind will only cause you more stress in the moment. It’s important to focus on the present and the things that we can control, such as the financial decisions we will make in the future.

Gaza Will Take Up To 20 Years To Rebuild The reconstruction of the Gaza Strip could cost as much as US$6 billion and take two decades to complete, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. In its report , the U.N.aligned group said 17,000 Gaza housing units were destroyed or severely damaged during this summer’s war and 5,000 units still need work after damage sustained in the previous military campaigns. In addition, it says, Gaza has a housing deficit of 75,000 units. Shelter Cluster said its 20-year assessment is based on the capacity of the main Israel-Gaza cargo crossing to handle 100 trucks of construction materials daily. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said: “It was possible for
us to avoid all of that: 2,000 martyrs, 10,000 injured, 50,000 houses (destroyed).” Efforts to rebuild Gaza will be hindered by a blockade imposed by Egypt and Israel since the Islamic militant group Hamas seized power in 2007. Israel has severely restricted the import of concrete and
other building materials into Gaza, fearing that militants will use them to build rockets and reinforce cross-border attack tunnels. Mindful of Israel’s concerns, Britain, France and Germany have proposed the creation of an international mechanism to monitor goods going into Gaza.

Parents Encouraged To Check Childrens Downloads Parents are being encouraged to pay more attention to the apps their children download after new research found that nearly a third do not monitor the downloads their children make to their smartphones. Internet Matters, the child internet safety organisation that was launched earlier this year by the UK's four largest web providers - BT, Virgin Media, Sky and TalkTalk, revealed that its latest study showed 29% of parents to primary school-aged children did not require them to ask for permission before downloading apps on to their devices, including smartphones and tablets. There are over three million apps available and this number increases daily. Understandably, parents find it difficult to keep track of the apps that their children use. Many apps are great learning or entertainment tools but some may create risky situations for children and could put them in harm's way. The Internet Matters site was created specifically to give parents information on all aspects of the internet, and the site confirmed it has now added a dedicated apps section. The site has created a five-point plan to help parents better protect
www.ilmnews.com
their children from any malicious software that may lie in apps, including anonymous messaging services. The advice highlights the need to not give children access to account passwords, as well as check the privacy settings on their device to ensure they are safe. Educating youngsters about being vigilant, brushing up on apps knowledge yourself and helping youngsters create their social media accounts once
they are old enough are also suggested tips for parents. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter both say in their terms of service that users must be at least 13 years old in order to have a profile. For many young people, socialising on the move through mobile phone apps is part of everyday life.
They can be fantastic resources for children and young people, but it's important that both parents and children are aware of the potential dangers. These can come from peers as much as they can from strangers. Risks for young people include cyberbullying, being exposed to inappropriate content, and grooming - where someone builds an emotional connection with a young person in order to sexually abuse them. Internet Matters is pushing for greater digital engagement from parents after its findings noted that one in 10 parents with children aged five to 11 admitted they never checked what apps their children were using, with one in eight only monitoring mobile devices monthly. Greater urgency is being sought as the digital revolution continues to take hold computer coding has now entered the school curriculum for the first time. The recent celebrity photo leak scandal has also brought more attention to the subject of mobile and general internet security, with many experts suggesting that a lot of security issues can be fixed simply by being more vigilant online, and making better use of passwords.

Eid Messages From Political Leaders
Fifth Of Child Deaths ‘Preventable’
especially those forced to make sacrifices themselves. I think of all the Muslims who have come to Britain over the years – from the Indian subcontinent to the Balkans, from the Arab world to Africa, from Turkey to Kurdistan, and people from all parts of Asia – sacrificing so many things to build up Britain’s businesses, run our public services and strength en our society. Their children and grandchildren – British Muslims in our country today – help to make Britain the success story it is today. As we mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, I think particularly of the sacrifices hundreds of thousands of Muslims made to fight alongside the Allies. The freedom for which they fought – for which so many gave their
lives – is the freedom we all enjoy today. Above all, I think of all those around the world being forced to sacrifice everything in order just to stay alive. The displaced in Iraq, the beleaguered in Syria, the wounded in Gaza, the exposed in Eastern Europe – these people are giving up all they have to protect their families. People here in Britain are giving what they can to help those in need – especially British Muslims, who are the most giving faith community in this country. This Eid, we will be thinking of those at the mercy of these conflicts and come together to pray for peace. So once again, wherever you are spending Eid, let me wish you and your family my very best wishes. Eid Mubarak.
I want to wish Eid Mubarak to all Muslims celebrating Eid and a safe journey to those now on Hajj. I know that many of you use this special time to reflect on what’s important to you in your lives: your family, your friends, your beliefs, your commitment to do the best you can for others. It’s also a time to think about sacrifice and struggle – and that is particularly poignant this year as we continue to see so many innocent people – Muslim and non Muslim – caught up in the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Gaza
and Iraq. It is truly heartbreaking to witness the loss that continues to take place in these parts of the world. More than ever we need to strive for an end to the violence. We need to unite behind peace, tolerance, compassion, generosity towards one and other – the values that are at the heart of Islam and the heart of Eid. Today I want to reaffirm my commitment to those values, my party’s commitment to those values, and I want to wish you all a loving and peaceful Eid.
Rt Hon Ed Miliband, MP, Leader, Labour Party
I would like to send my best wishes to the readers of The Muslim News, for a happy and healthy Eid-Al-Adha. For British Muslims who are fortunate enough to participate in the annual Hajj to Mecca, which I know is a pillar of Islam, I hope that they will have an enlightening, peaceful and holy experience. During this holy time, Muslims across Britain are committed to deep reflection and prayer. It is a time to commemorate the readiness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son to God. This
Eid-Al-Adha, Muslims will be making their own sacrifices to God and taking the opportunity to partake in charity work. The Contributions that British Muslims make to our country, from our businesses to our economy are invaluable. The values of charity and looking after our most vulnerable in society are values that are shared by the Labour Party. On behalf of the Labour Party, I would like to wish you once again a happy Eid. Eid Mubarak!
Rt Hon Sadiq Khan, MP, Shadow Justice Secretary, Lord Chancellor and Shadow Minister of London
I would like to wish Eid Mubarak to all the readers of The Muslim News. As we mark the end of the Hajj and remember the sacrifice made by the Prophet Ibrahim (RA), we are reminded of the important role our faith plays in motivating our community to serve and stand with those in need As we celebrate Eid al-Adha, we must also take the time to reflect on our own lives, the sacrifices we make, and the duties we have to our families and our communities. This is also a chance to recognise the enormous contribution of the Muslim community right across our country, in every area of
life, in businesses, charities and public service. It is also important that at this holy time we do not forget those who are less fortunate than ourselves, both in our own communities and around the world. As we celebrate Eid with our loved ones, we should think, pray and give charity to those who are less fortunate than ourselves, such as those suffering in Gaza, Iraq and Syria and those who have lost loved ones as a result of the floods in Kashmir or disease in Sierra Leone. I wish everyone celebrating Eidul-Adha, a happy and peaceful Eid.
Rt Hon David Cameron, MP, Prime Minister I want to send my best wishes to Muslims in Britain and around the world observing Eid al-Adha. This festival of sacrifice is a chance for us to come together and to reflect upon those less fortunate,
Rt Hon Nick Clegg, MP, Deputy Prime Minister

A fifth of all child and teenager deaths in England have preventable causes such as accidents, fatal assaults, abuse or neglect, new research has shown. Child death rates are also higher in the north than in the south of the country, and are closely linked to poverty, a series of studies found. Each
year around 5,000 infants, children and adolescents die prematurely in England and Wales. One study showed that between 2010 and 2011, 20% of deaths of children and teenagers aged 18 and under in England could have been avoided. Preventable deaths
were defined as “those in which modifiable factors may have contributed to death”. Politicians should recognise that child survival is as much linked to socioeconomic policies that reduce inequality as it is to a country’s overall gross domestic product and systems of healthcare delivery.
Apple Pulls Back iOS 8 Software Update Due To Major Flaws Apple has been forced to withdraw an update for the iOS 8 operating system, after it appeared to cause more problems than it solved. The tech giant had released the new version of its software to fix glitches reported by iPhone and iPad users. But customers who installed the update have reportedly had difficulties making phone calls, and have been unable to use fingerprints to unlock their device. Many of these latest flaws only
seem to affect the iPhone 6, with older models less vulnerable to the additional glitches from the software update. Affected users are being advised to revert to the original version of iOS 8. The software issue comes just hours after it was revealed that the iPhone 6 Plus was being bent while in users’ pockets. One user posted a picture of his friend’s iPhone, which had curved to the shape of his leg.
Sex Lessons ‘Should Be Compulsory’ In Schools, Women’s Rights Group Says Lessons on sex and relationships should be compulsory in primary and secondary schools to prevent another Rotherhamstyle abuse scandal, women’s rights campaigners have said. The End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW), along with the Everyday Sexism Project launched a petition today calling on the leaders of the main political parties to make sex and relationship education (SRE) compulsory. It follows the release of a
damning report into the sexual exploitation of 1,400 children in Rotherham over a 16-year period between 1997 and 2013. EVAW cannot sit back and hope to respond better to the next Rotherham - they need to prevent it in the first place. They are calling for a strong focus on the relationships, respect and equality aspect of SRE when taught in school and, of course, for all SRE to be age appropriate. The campaigners, who also have the backing of Mumsnet, said
youngsters were “bombarded” with negative messages about relationships and sex, stemming from an increased exposure to online pornography and “sexualised” elements of popular culture. The petition calls for all schools, both primary and secondary, to teach SRE including sexual consent, gender stereotypes, respectful relationships and the harms of pornography, with increased teacher training and statutory guidance.
Eating One Piece Of Fruit A Day ‘Reduces Heart Disease Risk By Up To 40%’ Eating fruit every day can reduce the risk of heart and artery disease by up to 40%. Compared with avoiding fruit altogether, daily consumption also cut the overall risk of death by nearly a third in atrisk individuals. While previous studies have shown the benefits of fruit and vegetables to heart health, few have focused on fruit alone. The new
research led by scientists at Oxford University involved almost half a million people from China taking part in a large health and lifestyle investigation. Even eating just one more portion a day helped lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, which should give us all that e x t r a
incentive. Tracy Parker, heart health dietician at the British Heart Foundation Fruit consumption frequency was recorded at the start of the seven year follow-up period. The number of occasions people ate fruit ranged between never, one to three days per week, four to six days per week, and daily. The findings showed that compared with consuming none, eating fruit every day cut the risk of cardiovascular disease by 25 - 40%. A dose response was also seen. The more fruit that was consumed, the more the risk of CVD fell.

Nation Finally Awoken Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Chairman Imran Khan said the nation was finally awoken and thanked Allah Almighty for fulfilling his prayer. Addressing thousands of his party’s supporters at Minare-Pakistan in Lahore, Imran Khan said: “Allah fulfilled my prayer. He has awoken the entire nation”. It was by far the biggest gathering of the citizens of Pakistan since the country’s history with thousands pledging support to the campaign for a Naya Pakistan. He admired the step of the government to convene the joint session of the parliament, saying it exposed true faces of the entire political leadership which stood together to save their so-called democracy. Imran Khan also criticized Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari 'for coming from Dubai to save Nawaz Sharif'. “I didn’t take money from ISI like you (Nawaz Sharif) did as it was revealed in Asghar Khan case,”
Nawaz Sharif Aware Of Problems In System Prime of Pakistan Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the government was aware of problems in the system and would work towards eliminating them. Sharif said those holding sit-ins tried to disrupt development in the country. The prime minister added that despite the protests in Islamabad the government would continue with its work. In response to questions over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s slogan to change the system, the prime minister is saying that eliminating problems in the system was part of their agenda. An option is to involve the judiciary in efforts to topple the government, but PM Nawaz Sharif says this would not happen. According to the prime minister, even the courts have expressed
he continued. The PTI chief said the 45 days spent inside the container are at one side, the rest of the years of his political career on the other. He said the 45day long sit-in has set a world record. “I will keep on staging the sit-in till I get Nawaz Sharif’s resignation,” he vowed. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to defeat them in conventional
politics. I knew by coming to power with the US backing I wouldn’t be able to break the status quo. But, I knew I would succeed when my nation would stand with me,” he said. Khan said the Supreme Court would be taking up the petition of Ishaq Khakwani for disqualification of Nawaz Sharif on charges of telling lies. He said one day the slogan of “Go Nawaz Go” will echo inside Nawaz Sharif’s home. However, he asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif not to resign now and continue to hold his office till he brings the entire nation together. Imran Khan asked the people of Lahore to promise him they would not leave his side and in exchange vowed to stand with them in all circumstances. He asked the people of Mianwali to be ready, as he would be holding his next rally there. He said after Mianwali he would stage a procession in Multan.

PROPERTY CORNER
STUDENTS AND PROPERTY
Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son I thought with the beginning of the new academic term it would be a good subject to talk about, many people cater for the student market which has an effect on demand for property. Many property related people have been talking about the return of students which stimulates their demand for land and property. If you are a reader in Manchester, Bradford, Sheffield or Leeds where there is a University you will have no doubt witnessed a huge increase in residents. Students bring a vibrancy and energy to an area, a welcome sight for many businesses. So what has property got to do with students, more than you would think. I will highlight a few areas in particular, Accommodation, Retail & Leisure and Educational Premises. Student accommodation has come a long way since I was a student many years ago. At that time the choice was a shared private house or university provided accommodation. The trend now is many private purpose built student residences. What has this done for property, it has increased demand for land and property near university campuses, and many developers have entered this market. Just look around your local University and you will see many new developments catering for the student market; these numbers are likely to increase in the next few years. The accommodation they provide is designed for student living and will include WiFi and many other modern technologies. The
students themselves are far more demanding which develops around such areas is convenience in their requirements which has increased the stores, students tend not to drive to large supermarkets but tend to shop piecemeal locally. standards considerably in the past decade. Are You Owed Money? ‘Big Six’ Energy Firms Return £153m In Unclaimed Credit The so-called “Big Six” energy companies have launched a campaign to reunite former customers with £153m of unclaimed credit on their accounts. Up to three million households could benefit from the MyEnergyCredit initiative. The scheme, launched by the industry body Energy UK, is a response to a demand for action from the regulator Ofgem back in February. Its estimate then was that up to £400m in closed household and business accounts from direct debit payments was being held by energy firms. Energy UK said the campaign would encourage customers who have switched suppliers or moved home without leaving a forwarding address to get in touch with their old company if they think they have left money behind. It also announced changes to help prevent such cash piles building up in future, though it would now impose a two-year deadline for collection of credit, with any funds left behind after that time being donated to help vulnerable customers.
The student market also stimulates many other sectors of the local economy such as transport and others. The conclusion is that if you look at just the areas I have talked about, it stimulates demand for land and property and thereby affects price. Many years ago student areas attracted very few investors; the situation has come full circle with competition for land and property in these areas being really high. This scenario is repeated in most University areas.
Earth’s Population Could Soar To 12.3bn By The Year 2100
Calls To Give All 16-Year-Olds The Vote After ‘Referendum Success’
The Earth’s population could be as high as 12.3 billion people by 2100, predictions suggest. Currently, it stands at 7.2 billion. Previous estimates suggested that after peaking at around 9 billion by the end of the century the global population would level off or even decline. But scientists now warn the figure could actually rise - and worsen world problems such as climate change, infectious disease and poverty. The research, also suggested population growth can be kept in check by more investment in education and family planning programmes that provide contraceptives. Population, which had sort of fallen off the world’s agenda, remains a very important issue. Most of the growth is expected to take place in Africa, where the population is expected to quadruple from around 1 billion today to 4 billion by the end of the century. Asia’s population, now at 4.4 billion, is predicted to peak at around 5 billion in 2050 and then begin to decline. North American, European, Latin American, and Caribbean populations are likely to stay below 1 billion in each region. The total number of people who have ever lived on Earth is thought to be about 108 billion - which means about one fifteenth of all the people who have ever lived are currently alive today.
Allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in the Scottish referendum is proof of why the voting age should be lowered in all UK elections, it has been claimed. More than 100,000 in the age range signed up to exercise their democratic right - around four-fifths of Scots in that bracket. Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said: “The initiative by which our 16 and 17-year-olds were able to vote has proved to be a resounding success - I suspect no-one will ever again dispute their right and ability to participate fully and responsibly in democratic elections.” Not only are 16 and 17-year-olds by law able to make complex decisions and take on wide-ranging responsibilities, they are also showing in practice that they want to make a positive difference. Although 16 to 17-year-olds only represented 3% of the electorate, the closely-run contest meant every vote counted - resulting in politicians showing up in high schools to debate issues and listen to teens’ concerns. The participation rate of 84.5% topped the previous best of 83.9% recorded in the 1950 general election and dwarfed the tallies in recent Westminster polls, which saw 65.1% vote in 2010 and 61.4% in 2005. The total - 3,619,915 - will have included many voters who had never cast their ballot before or had stayed away from the polling booths for many years.

picked he would have a word with the captain selectors and team management that he would want to have his fair share of chances. “If I get my chances I will play consistently for Pakistan,” he said. Admitting that it was difficult to get back to the national team each time and start afresh this time around. “It has been happening quite often now and
I am kind of used to it but this time when I get back I will play till the time I want to play and then say bye bye to cricket,” he said. Malik said cricket is his passion and he is not someone who will stay in his room if don’t do well. “I go to the gym listen to some music jump in the pool and talk to my family when I am in that kind of space,” he said.

Driving Licence Changes From January 2015 the paper part of the driving licence will officially disappear as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) continues its aim to digitise motorists' records. Last month we reported how the traditional paper tax disc would be replaced by an electronic system from October, which ministers believe will streamline services and save money. Last October, the Department for Transport launched a review into how to make the DVLA "deliver better services and save money for the taxpayer". Stephen Hammond, roads minister, concluded in a report that one of the main reforms would be to "remove the driving licence paper counterpart." But what does this mean for the 46 million motorists in Britain, particularly for those who only have the paper component of the licence? The DVLA says you do not need to take any action.
www.ilmnews.com
The paper licence will continue to be valid - at least until it needs to renewed. Those who have an old style paper driving licence issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998, this change won't affect you, and you should keep your licence. The next time you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only. Those who have the photocard should continue using it, remembering to renew it when necessary ( gov.uk/renewdriving-licence ). Motorists could face a £1,000 fine if they are caught with an invalid licence. The DVLA confirmed that there would be no charge for changing an old style paper licence to a photocard licence with a change of details. However, once the motorist has the photocard licence, they will have to pay £20 each time it is renewed (every 10 years).
Paper licences do not need to be renewed. Anyone over the age of 70 will need to renew their licence every three years, updating it with any medical conditions. "If a driver updated their licence with a change of address, name or notified a medical conditions then the updated licence issued will be a photocard licence," the DVLA say. The changes are to make it as easy as possible for motorists to access government services. Getting rid of needless bits of paper, making changes to free up drivers' time and saving money for the taxpayer, is all part of the commitment to cut unnecessary red tape. Digital services will allow drivers and businesses to check driving entitlement and endorsements. This means there will no longer be a need for the paper counterpart of the driving licence which will save drivers over £5m every year.

Public WiFi not Secure as you think The increase of broadband rollout and the growth of WiFi in public spaces is providing society with the huge benefit of access to the Internet quickly and easily. But not all WiFi is as secure as we might think it is. Europol’s Cybercrime Division warns that attacks are rising on public WiFi and are a major security risk. In the UK, key cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham are increasing public WiFi access, whilst restaurants, cafes and bars are also keen provide free WiFi to attract customers. For most smartphone users public WiFi is always seen as a great way of saving data usage included in their phone tariffs but if you are going to use public WiFi for personal transactions, sensitive data and banking, this may not be the best method. We are now seeing an increase in the misuse of wi-fi, in order

public WiFi and only use it for non-sensitive data activity if you are unsure about it’s security. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe when using public WiFi: Always use reputable internet security software on all your devices including your laptop, PC, MAC, tablets and smartphone. If a WiFi connection does not require a password, it is insecure. So, don’t send any confidential information over this network e.g. username, passwords, private data etc. Look for public places that do offer free WiFi but require a password which you obtain from them. Look out for the https in the web address in your browser and the padlock symbol when using websites for personal transactions. Always check your credit card or Therefore, it is important to be debit bills for any odd transacextremely vigilant when using tions, especially if you use public WiFi a lot. Always keep your device software up-to-date especially if security updates are available. Security using the Internet has been and always will be an issue as hackers find new ways of executing attacks but as long as you stick to the rules of keeping your confidential data secure, you can lower he chances of experiencing theft of your data. to steal information, identity or passwords and money from the users who use public or insecure wi-fi connections. The important thing is to distinguish if the public WiFi you are using is secure and not public. When you connect to it, if it requires a security access password, it means it is secure but if you can just connect to it with no password, it is insecure. Something known as ‘man-inthe-middle’ is being applied to commit these attacks on public networks. Where, the hackers capture data being passed between a user of the public WiFi and the Internet. Attacks of these kind are targeting people when they communicate with a bank, do online shopping or log in to social media sites.
AMIR KHAN TO FACE LUIS COLLAZO
An explosive matchup of our very own world-class fighter, Amir Khan is happening in May. The British superstar and former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Amir “King” Khan will face current WBA International Welterweight champion Luis Collazo in the 12 round event. "I'm looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas once again, and my intention on May 3 is to make a statement that I belong on this big stage," said Khan. "Luis Collazo might be coming off of a big win, but I am in incredible shape and am ready for this challenge. A win on May 3 is what I need to prove that I truly am one of the best welterweights in the sport." A British standout who represented his nation in the 2004
Olympic Games, where he won a silver medal, Bolton's Amir "King" Khan (28-3, 19 KOs) went from local hero to international star when he won his first world title at 140 pounds in 2009.After five successful defences that included wins over Marcos Maidana, Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah, Khan lost his title by way of a controversial decision to Lamont Peterson in 2011. Winner of two straight over Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz since, the flashy, flamboyant 27-year-old boxer-puncher is now campaigning at welterweight, where he seeks championship gold once again.
