William Hague is standing down as an MP after an illustrious 25 year career in the House of Commons.

Looking back on his time in politics, the former foreign secretary and Conservative Party leader said he had few regrets, other than losing the 2001 general election. “I’m not one for having a lot of regrets but I do regret that we didn’t get things back together again faster in the Conservative Party.”

But Mr Hague is far from alone in seeking a new role,

away from the famous green benches, after 7 May’s general election. A total of 86 MPs have announced their intention to stand down, according to BBC Analysis. It might sound like a lot, out of 650 MPs, but it is a long way short of the total in 2010, when 149 MPs headed for the exit in the biggest Commons clear-out in history, in the wake of the expenses scandal.

A total of 17 former cabinet ministers – 12 Labour and five Conservative – are standing down at this election.

Three female Conservative MPs, all elected in 2010, have announced they will retire. This constitutes 6% of female Tory MPs. In all, seven of the 2010 Tory intake will stand down after a single term.

High profile Tory retirees include former health secretary Andrew Lansley, Sir George Young and Sir Peter Tapsell, the Father of the House, who was first elected to the Commons in 1959. He has clocked up 54 years on the green benches, with a two year break from the Commons in the mid-1960s, making him one of the longest-serving MPs in British history.

Former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rikfind, who now sits as an independent after having the Tory Whip withdrawn, is also standing down.

Aside from that I have some bad news, this year we may have to pay extra for YCB affiliations. ECB have decided to up fees to £45.00 for each club plus £15 for each team. So clubs in our league with one team will pay £60.00. We've already received £30, which I thank you but you may have to pay another £30, if we are to continue to use play cricket website and receive other additional benefits. I am working with YCB to see if they can help assist with the amount.

All babies will be offered an injection against deadly meningitis B – ending a year-long delay, the Health Secretary has said. The vaccine costs £20 a time and is expected to be available on the NHS by the end of the year.

Jeremy Hunt’s announcement follows growing pressure from charities, which warned that children were dying and suffering devastating injuries while wrangling about the cost continued.

There are around 1,870 cases of meningitis B in the country each year and it commonly affects the under-fives and teenagers.

It leads to around 120 deaths and leaves another 400 with life-long disabilities including brain damage, amputations and blindness. A panel of scientific advisers had recommended in October 2013 that the vaccine should not be introduced as it was not deemed cost-effective.

Nearly 800,000 babies each year would be eligible for the jab at an average annual cost of £16million. Charities estimate the NHS would spend around £3million treating and caring for just one child who has survived meningitis but is left with life-long disabilities. GPs would give the injection to

babies from the age of two months, with boosters at four months and 12 months.

In most cases, they would have it with the five-in-one jab and the rotavirus oral vaccination.

The move means the UK will be the first country in the world to offer the vaccine to all babies.

Children need three doses in the first year of life, making the maximum final bill for the 700,000 born each year in England and Wales £42million. GPs are also paid a £7.50 fee for each dose administered Meningitis is an infection of the outside layer of cells surrounding the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and damage. It can kill within hours and is the most common cause of death by infectious disease in childhood.

Britain’s Pothole Repairs To Cost ‘£12bn And Take 13 Years’ It will cost more than £12bn and will take 13 years to fix all the potholes on roads in England and Wales, a report has claimed. Despite more being filled in the cash spent on repairs in the last 12 months has been “wasted”. An annual survey also found an increase in the amount paid in compensation to motorists in England to more than £20m. Local authority staffing costs, to process the claims, have increased to around £18m.

Essentially, the money spent on filling the 2.7 million potholes reported is wasted - it is inefficient and short term in its effectiveness.

The money would be better spent preventing potholes forming in the first place. The £6bn of funding pledged between 2015 and 2021 is welcome, and hopefully will be confirmed by an incoming government. But the truth is that although it sounds like a big investment, it will only be enough for local authorities to tread water and it will do nothing to tackle the backlog or prevent continuing deterioration.

Every mile of motorways and trunk roads will receive £1.4m funding over the next six years compared with £31,000 per mile for local roads. This makes little sense given the Government’s own traffic projections predict an increase in local traffic of more than 40% by 2040.

Councils need billions, not millions, to bring our roads up to scratch.

DEVELOPMENT WILL BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE

NEW FUNDING TO HELP SHEFFIELD PEOPLE IN FUEL POVERTY

Work on the next phase of The Moor’s regeneration is soon to mean a new shopping, dining and cinema complex rising from the rubble.

Over the next few months the busy building site, which has left a glaring gap in part of the shopping parade, should be dominated by cranes putting together the new building.

It will house a flagship Primark, four other retailers, restaurants and the nine-screen picture house – following on from the relocation of the market, stores opening and upgrade of the street’s appearance.

New funding of £163,000 will be used by Sheffield Council to help people struggling to heat their homes. The money will pay for advice services and work to link them with about 1,000 people who are most in need.

The council says an estimated 34,000 households – out of 230,000 in Sheffield – are living in fuel poverty where they have to make decisions between keeping warm or eating regularly.

Vulnerable residents will be given support to help them lower their energy bills, in particular families with young children, the elderly, adults living alone and those on low incomes.

Garden Waste Collections Re-Start In Rotherham

Keen gardeners across Rotherham are reminded that the council's green waste collection service starts this month.

From week commencing, Monday, April 6, (Easter Monday) green bins containing garden waste only will be collected on the same day as their recycling blue boxes and blue bags.

Residents are being advised to check their household waste calendars that list the scheduled collection day. These are currently being posted to 115,000 properties across the borough.

Alternatively, they can check the schedules on the Rotherham Borough Council web site at www.rotherham.gov.uk/bincollections This collection page has been updated already to show exactly when green collections take place for all properties across the borough through to the end of October.

A petition signed by over 2500 people calling on the Government to keep essential funding for GP practices has been handed in at 10 Downing St. The petition calls for a halt to cuts which threaten 100 GPs practices with closure across the country – including two in central Sheffield. Up to 13,000 patients in the city could lose their medical practice in the next few years unless the policy is reversed, campaigners claim.

The petition to challenge the Government’s decision to axe the Minimum Practice Income Guarantee has been presented to the Government by Sheffield MP Paul Blomfield, doctors, staff and patients. Campaigners say the changes will result in some GP practices losing as much as £140,000 of income.

The petition was handed in at No.10 by Paul Blomfield MP and a group of doctors, staff and patients from Devonshire Green and Hanover Medical Centres.

Paul Blomfield MP said: “Thousands of people in Sheffield signed the petition and we made the Health Minister aware of their strong concerns. The Government needs to think again, halt the cuts and provide fair funding for our local GP practices before any of them are forced to close.

I’ll keep pressing the case until we see this policy changed.”

TOP MARK TO CITY’S BUS SERVICES Bus passengers in Sheffield have given a top mark to the city’s local services in new survey by Stagecoach Yorkshire. The Sheffield Customer Satisfaction Report showed that 100 per cent of customers intend to continue using Stagecoach buses.

Research highlighted that 97 per cent of people would recommend the operator to a friend, 93 per cent were satisfied or very satisfied with the appearance of Stagecoach drivers, 92 per cent with driving standards and safety on board and 90 per cent with vehicle comfort.

A total of 90 per cent of people were satisfied or very satisfied with the ease of getting where passengers want to go.

Other areas to score highly were service frequency (89 per cent), services overall (87 per cent) and customer service and StagecoachSmart travel cards (both 83 per cent).

Overall 78 per cent of people were satisfied or very satisfied with Stagecoach’s ticket range.

Customers in South Yorkshire were more satisfied with Stagecoach services, punctuality and value for money than any other operator

MEADOWHALL TO MARK 25th BIRTHDAY WITH £50M REFURB British Land has announced it will carry out a ‘substantial’ £50 million internal refurbishment of Meadowhall, to celebrate the shopping centre’s 25th birthday.

The refurbishment is set to commence in autumn 2015 and will be completed by the end of 2017. The refurbishment includes new way finding, mall seating and lighting as well as the installation of dramatic lighting artwork. The works will largely be completed out of hours to enable all retail and leisure operators to trade throughout the period.

The refurbishment will help reposition the Sheffield shopping centre ensuring it remains a ‘modern shopping environment’ which is locally preferred by both retailers and consumers.

Royal Mail Hikes Price Of Stamps Yet Again The price of both first and second class stamps has increased. The cost for first and second class stamps has risen by 1p to 63p and 54p respectively. Sending a large letter has increased by 2p to 95p for first class and by 1p to 74p for second class. Despite the increase, Royal Mail has insisted the prices still represent among the best value in Europe. The firm has pointed out the European average for first class letters is 72p and 62p second class.

The privatised mail service is in a battle with commercial delivery firms and increased use of electronic communications. Royal Mail has questioned the sustainability of the company’s Universal Service Obligation (USO) under which it must deliver letters to each UK address.

It has accused rivals of “cherry-picking” concentrating their operations in urban areas - to save on cost though the industry regulator has said it sees no reason to re-examine the obligation.

A scheme to acknowledge the work of Sheffield’s ‘unsung heroes’ has been announced at the last meeting of the City Council. The Leader of the City Council, Councillor Julie Dore and the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Peter Rippon have suggested re-launching a Civic Awards scheme in Sheffield.

Sheffield already has the popular Sheffield Legends – a ‘walk of fame’ that honours local celebrities who have achieved national, or preferably international, repute in their areas of work.

Many people make a tremendous contribution to the city and it is hoped that launching

this scheme will provide some recognition of their work. These awards will be nominated by local people every year and will be personally thanked by the Lord Mayor in recognition of their efforts. It is intended that nominations from the public will be requested each year for both the Sheffield Legends and Civic Awards and an independent Selection Board, chaired by the Lord Mayor, would choose those to be recognised.

Details about how to nominate people for this year’s Civic Awards and Sheffield Legends will be announced shortly.

TURN IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE FAKE TOBACCO SHOPS Cheap cigarettes sold on the streets of Sheffield are being smuggled in by organised criminal gangs, it is claimed. Crime charity bosses are urging members of the public to turn in those selling illegal cigarettes across South Yorkshire.

The products – rolling tobacco and cigarettes – cost less than legal products, because tax has not been paid on them, costing the UK economy billions of pounds each year.

Test purchasing operations found illegal tobacco and cigarettes being sold by retailers in Abbeydale, Pitsmoor and Darnall in Sheffield, as well as Aston in Rotherham.

SHARED BINS IN WASTE PLAN TO SAVE £3.4M Plans to shake up bin collection services in Sheffield to save £3.4m have been outlined by the council. Among the proposals are plans to introduce shared bins, scrap extra Christmas collections and charge £20 for replacement black bins.

A public consultation on the issue has been running in the past month.

Sheffield City Council claimed the proposed changes were the result of government-imposed cuts which have meant it must save £63m by 2016.

Under plans to introduce shared bins it said: "Shared bins will be provided, rather than indi-

vidual bins for every household, in areas where there is limited space at each property to store bins, and there is space in the local amenity to provide shared bins".

Councillor Julie Dore, the Labour leader of Sheffield City Council, said: "Part of our budget savings involve coming up with proposals for our waste service that increase efficiency where possible, while still providing a good service for everyone in the city.

"We welcome people's views and will act upon them so that we do what is best for Sheffield in terms of waste management and recycling."

SHEFFIELD NEEDS 4,600 NEW PRIVATE HOMES SAYS COUNCIL PLAN Thousands of new homes should be built by private developers in Sheffield in the next three years, according to a new plan. Sheffield Council’s new corporate plan sets out challenges, needs and future proposals for the city.

The plan says the council will ‘support developers to build 4,600 homes across the city’ as part of a wider plan for 15,000 new homes built over the next decade.

And it says development will focus on ‘larger sites that can deliver significant growth, including mixed housing in the city centre together with new services to support this growing community’.

Law Changes For 2015

This upcoming year will see changes in a number of Employment Laws. April 2015 will see a host of changes to pay for new parents and sick pay with statutory pay rates for maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave, increasing to £139.56 per week.

Statutory sick pay (SSP) rates will increase to £88.45 per week. Statutory adoption leave and pay will no longer have the 26-week qualifying period, and adoption pay will be brought in line with maternity pay, which will be 90% of normal earnings for the first six weeks.

They will know which revision techniques work for them for different subjects and also their subject knowledge will be much better.

Asian Mayors & Deputy Mayors Engrave History British Asians have been playing an important part in all fields of English life. Their significance can hardly be overemphasized.

However, in recent years European and local elections have attracted particular attention to the British Asian community where British Asians have won seats and made their way to the legislatures.

Over the years we have seen a rise in many councils, of mayors and deputy mayors of Pakistani, Kashmiri, Bangladeshi and Indian origins being elected to office. More so, a record number of councillors, mayors and deputy mayors of Asian origin, have been elected for the first time in British history. The British Muslim and Asian community have regarded this development as satisfactory and forthcoming and a proud achievement for our heritage. The first asian Mayor of Sheffield was Qurban Hussain in 1993. 2009 saw the first Asian Mayor of Rotherham as Cllr Shaukat Ali took up the position. This year we will see Deputy Mayor Cllr Talib Hussain take over as Mayor of Sheffield in May. Cllr Talib Hussain is in his second term as councillor for Burngreave ward, and has actively participated in community affairs for several years more than his five years on Sheffield City Council.

It is not yet known who out of the present councillors will be contesting their ward seats. This information will be available by mid to late April.

Major Roads To Be ‘Expressways’ European-style expressways are set to turn some of England's major A-roads into "mini motorways". Over the next five years, the newly-formed Highways England, which replaces the Highways Agency from April 1, will upgrade key A-roads into expressways - a new classification between an A-road and a motorway.

To get traffic flowing more freely, junctions will be modernised, with roundabouts and traffic lights removed and emergency refuge and maintenance areas provided.

It is possible that bicycles and slow-moving vehicles such as tractors will be excluded from these new roads.

In addition, advanced technology will be used to detect and help clear incidents more quickly and get traffic moving.

According to The Times, 18 major routes are initially set to become expressways, with a further seven projects being considered.

Similar expressways already exist in Italy, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. They are described by officials as "consistently good roads which are largely or entirely dual carriageway, with gradeseparated junctions, giving most users a motorway-quality journey".

Drivers are also set to benefit from the provision of roadside wifi to send traffic updates to drivers.

Motorways in the South East will be targeted initially through a £150 million innovation fund, which will also look at trialling driverless vehicles on the road network.

A cap on bills from stolen mobile phones will come as much-needed relief to consumers targeted by phone fraudsters. Citizens Advice has been calling for a cap to be put in place after helping consumers landed with bills as high as £23,000.

The five firms have drawn up a code of conduct which will oblige them to provide: Clear pricing information and alerts when consumers reach data bundle limits; Information on how to avoid roaming charges; A barring function so users can protect themselves against unauthorised or inadvertent calls to premium rate services and in-app purchases. It comes as the number of smartphone thefts has plummeted thanks to socalled kill switches. Apple, Samsung and Google have all implemented techniques for owners to effectively render a phone useless if it is stolen.

As a result, smartphone thefts have fallen by half in London.

Customers are advised to protect their phone as they would their wallet and make full use of the security features, including SIM lock.

Households are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to getting the fastest broadband speeds, new research shows. A survey of the UK’s very quickest average connections also shows the north of England enjoying twice as many speedy streets as the south. Superfast broadband is now available to more than three quarters of the UK, but nearly a third don’t realise they can get it.

done by broadband users, showed wide variations even within the same areas. Generally, a third (34%) of the UK struggles with sub-5Mbps speeds, while just under a quarter (23%) make do with less than 3Mbps.

Minister Hails Launch Of Sadqa Day Communities Minister Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon has welcomed the launch of Sadaqa Day – a day of positive social action designed to bring the whole community together through volunteering.

The inaugural Sadaqa Day was held on 22 March and saw local communities and faith groups working in partnership on locally focused projects and charitable initiatives.

Led by British Muslim communities, Sadaqa Day will be a date in the diary where everyone – individuals, places of worship, schools, women’s and community groups, scouts and guides groups –– can get involved and contribute towards making their neighbourhoods a better place, irrespective of colour, creed, faith or background.

Volunteering activities could be anything communities want to donate their time and energy to – from helping the homeless, park clear-ups, collections of items for womens’ shelters, hospital and elderly people visits and more.

Lord Ahmad said: “People of all faiths have a strong history of positive contribution to life in Britain and Sadaqa Day is another shining example of this tradition. There is no better way to break down barriers and form friendships than by mucking in and working hard on a shared interest – and that’s why my department is proud to be supporting the inaugural Sadaqa Day. I’d urge everyone in the community to roll up their sleeves and get involved in practical positive social action” Sadaqa is an Islamic term that means voluntary charity – encompasses any act of giving out of sharing reflecting compassion, love, friendship and generosity.

The word Sadaqa is often spoken about as the charitable giving of money, but Sadaqa is so much more. It is every deed, every act of giving,

it is each movement in our service to others.

This is what the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, meant when he taught, “Even a smile is charity”. Across many faiths, in every school, and in all good homes, we are taught about doing our bit, making our own contribution, playing our part in giving to others and in making the world a slightly better place. Acting in genuine service for others is what Sadaqa Day is all about.

Sadaqa Day is a precursor to the Big Iftar, the annual British Muslim-led multi faith initiative in which people from different backgrounds share the fast-breaking meal (Iftar) together, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Sadaqa Day also builds on the Jewish-led Mitzvah Day and the Hindu inspired national Sewa Day as an annual event that brings together people from different faiths and from all parts of society, in selfless acts of charity and service to the community.

Britain’s Muslim communities are reported to be among the most generous, and many millions are raised and donated each year. Much is raised for relief aid in developing countries but increasingly, a growing proportion is also being raised for a wide variety of causes and concerns at home.

Today robots have become such an urge to be used in the modern day as it is now time for use to move forward. Drones have been with us for not that long, mainly used in wars, and it has been requested by the public citizens that we use these drones for good use. Recently Amazon has won approval from US federal regulators to test a delivery drone outdoors. The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an experimental airworthiness certificate allowing test flights over private, rural land in Washington State. Under the provisions, the flights must be conducted at 400ft (120m) or below during daylight hours. The company had asked for permission to fly at altitudes up to 500ft (150m).The drone must also remain within the line of sight of the pilot and observer. The person flying the aircraft, meanwhile, must have

a private pilot's certificate and current medical certification. Amazon must also provide monthly data to the FAA on the number of flights conducted, pilot duty time per flight, unusual hardware or software malfunctions and other information. The Seattle Company had asked the FAA for permission to fly drones for pack-

age deliveries last July, but it faces public concern about safety and privacy. The approval is a win for Seattle-based Amazon and advances its plans to deliver packages using small, self-piloted aircraft. As part of Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos' plan to deliver packages under a program dubbed Prime Air, the company is developing drones that fly at speeds of 50mph (80kph), operate autonomously and sense

Around 800,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest in the European Union every year and only 8.0% survive. The time always counts when trying to save someone’s life, and this drone has enough speed to save time to cure the victim before they suffer more severely.

Wide variations in the rate of caesarean sections carried out in Europe have raised concerns about whether women are benefiting from best practice, researchers have said. A new study published by the journal BJOG has found around a quarter of births in the UK are by C-section, compared to a low of 14.8% in Iceland and a high of about 52% in Cyprus. Authors of the study, led by academics at City University London, said it highlights a clear “lack of consensus about best practice” between countries of the EU, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.

The UK figures are neither high nor low, but there is a concern that the caesarean rates are still going up, with huge variations even between hospitals.

It urged further investigation, suggesting professionals’ attitudes to care at delivery, adherence to guidelines and differences in healthcare systems and how they are financed could be to blame for the stark variations. There are some women who undergo the surgery unnecessarily, which this reports suggests there are because of the wide variation. BUS FARE HIKES FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE Prices on First buses across South Yorkshire have increased from 28th march.

The bus operator has announced that the daily ticket will increase by 10p, the weekly ticket by 50p and the monthly ticket by £2. There will also be a rise on selected single fares.

First said the price rises are down to the increase in costs associated with operating buses. But the company stressed that its popular £1 adult fare is frozen and its saver tickets remain cheaper than in 2012.

Britain Gears Up For Polls The campaign to elect the next British Parliament has begun as Prime Minister David Cameron met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and requested her majesty to dissolve the parliament.

The election for all 650 seats will take place on May 7. The last day to file the nomination is on April 9th . New parliament will be summoned on May 18 and the surveys are predicting a hung parliament with minor parties like Scottish Nationalists and UK Independent Party (UKIP) calling the shots.

After meeting the queen, the prime minister launched the formal Conservative election campaign at No 10.

“There is a stark choice at the polls,” Cameron told the media. “The next prime minister walking through that door will be me or Ed Miliband.”

He warned that Labour’s “economic chaos” would mean “over £3,000 in higher taxes for every working family to pay for more welfare and out-of-control spending”.

Labour Leader Ed Miliband launched his campaign at Bloomberg in London with a mini-manifesto focussing on the business policies of the Labour. Miliband warned that an EU referendum proposed by Cam-

eron in 2017 would trigger a bitter twoyear campaign in which a re-elected Tory party would tear itself apart over whether the UK should remain in Europe.

Labour hopes to use fears about this uncertainty as a lever to urge companies to look again at some of Miliband’s pro-business policies. The party also plans to highlight the UK’s falling productivity ahead of figures due to be published.

The polls are fluctuating. A Sunday Times Poll put Labour ahead by three points, but a ComRes Poll for ITV News and the Daily Mail shows the Conservatives four points in the lead at 36% to Labour’s 32%.

Sky News’ projection of what Parliament would look like based on the latest polling figures gives Labour 279 seats, with the Tories just one behind on 278. The SNP would win 52, the Lib Dems 16, UKIP two and others 23.

Bill Gates Still World’s Richest Man Bill Gates stands atop Forbes magazine's annual list of the world's richest people, as Facebook Inc's Mark Zuckerberg joined the top 20 and basketball star Michael Jordan ploughed new air by making the list for the first time.

Gates' net worth rose to $79.2 billion from $76 billion a year earlier, putting the Microsoft Corp co-founder at the top for the 16th year in the last 21.

Mexico telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim Helu ranked second, worth $77.1 billion, while Berkshire Hathaway Inc chief Warren Buffett was third, at $72.7 billion.

Forbes identified a record 1,826 billionaires, up from 1,645 last year, worth a combined $7.05 trillion.

UK Finally Repays Its Debts From The First World War Britain’s outstanding First World War debt has been repaid after the Chancellor redeemed £1.9 billion from an outstanding bond. The 3.5% War Loan was the most widely held of any UK Government bond with more than 120,000 holders, or 60% of all holdings of government gilts.

About 97,000 of these investors held less than £1,000 and almost 38,000 holders owned less than £100, according to the Treasury. The 3.5% War Loan was issued in 1932 by the then-chancellor Neville Chamberlain in exchange for the 5% War Loan 1929-47, which was issued in 1917 as part of the effort to raise money to pay for the First World War. “We can, at last, pay off the debts Britain incurred to fight the First World War” Chancellor George Osborne, when announcing the plan to repay the debt in December.

The Debt Management Office estimates that Britain has paid some £5.5 billion in total interest on the 5% and 3.5% war loans since 1917.

Police Forces Have Lost Track Of Almost 400 Sex Offenders Police have lost track of almost 400 registered sex offenders they should be monitoring, include a child rapist who vanished two years ago, official figures have revealed. Others have been off the police radar for much longer, one for 14 years. A child protection charity said: “The horrifying prospect is that these offenders will have rebuilt their lives in communities who don’t know them.” Everyone on the register - currently around 60,000 - is required to say where they are living. But a total of 396 registered sex offenders have vanished after moving home without telling the authorities their new address. Re-offending is high and particularly among those who have left the support system that was designed to help them.

Some of those missing are foreign nationals who may have returned to their own countries. There are offenders missing from their homes in most of the UK’s 45 forces, but only Scotland says it knows where all its 4,775 sex offenders are living.

Offenders who have chosen to go off the radar should be pursued and punished. By disappearing they are removing the incentive for staying in the system for the many others who choose to comply.

Smuggling Migrants Out Of The UK source BBC: Illegal immigrants are being smuggled out of Britain to avoid deportation – before being sneaked back in after gaining immigration status elsewhere in Europe. Using the ‘asylum loophole’, people smugglers charge £1,000 per person to arrange trips to Europe, allowing illegal immigrants to gain legitimate paperwork. It means that if they are caught trying to return to Britain, they are not sent back to their birth country but to the European state that gave them their first asylumseeking status.

The report told how many of the illegal immigrants – and some who had outstayed their student visas – were told to make their way to Italy to apply for asylum. Once there they are fingerprinted and are able to gain immigration status, allowing them to lengthen their stay in Europe.

If they are caught trying to return to Britain, they only face being returned to Italy or other European countries rather than their countries of origin.

In 2006, Italy announced it would grant citizenship to immigrants who had stayed in the country for five years. However, it emerged that from January to August last year, 140,000 illegal immigrants had entered Europe via Italy. The eight-month figure was more than the entire total for the previous year.

Less than two years ago, border officials in the UK told of their ‘shock’ at the ‘very unusual’ case of 28 illegal immigrants trying to smuggle themselves out of Britain.

The immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka hid on a Polish lorry on a P&O ferry bound for France.

They were returned to Dover to be questioned at the Border Force immigration centre.

UN Women is an initiative by the UN whose main focus has been to end violence against women in the world.

Farhan Akhtar started the MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) initiative in 2013 and since then the multi-faceted actor has been a strong advocate for women’s rights. Tobacco Is A Global Killer A global conference has urged countries to take steps to reduce the consumption of tobacco, which it said was a leading cause of disease and death worldwide. In its final declaration, the 16th World Conference on Tobacco Health called for wider implementation of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for cutting smoking rates and reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). WHO says tobaccorelated diseases kill 35 million people annually, of whom 80% are in low- and middle-income countries.

In its final declaration, the conference said ‘Tobacco products pose an especially heavy burden on low- and middle-income countries and should be de-normalised worldwide.’ The conference insisted that tobacco use, in all its forms, is a major contributor to the occurrence of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory diseases. They warned that tobacco causes one in six of all such deaths and that almost half of current tobacco users will eventually die of tobacco-related disease. And despite a decline in the number of smokers in many countries, more needs to be done to curb tobacco use to meet the global target of a 30% reduction in consumption by 2025.

After a poor start, Pakistan raised hopes of a 1992-like turnaround. But, the team was let down by its batting and fielding, to be knocked out by Australia in the quarterfinal.

Yet, throughout the tournament, it proved itself to have one of the best bowling units. And this despite losing out on the services of Saeed Ajmal, while Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Hafeez missed out owing to injury.

Pakistan began its tournament on an inauspicious note, going down to India for the sixth time in World Cup history. A 150-run loss to an equally unpredictable West Indies side, which had earlier been defeated by Ireland, compounded Pakistan’s woes. The loss set Misbahul-Haq’s men back in a big way, and the team was deflated.

“We just lost in all three departments. Couldn't bowl well, a lot of dropped catches, and batting, totally flopped,” said Misbah after the loss to the West Indies.

“I think the only way is just to forget this, learn from this, just to improve your performances.

That's how up to just come up. If you just got trapped in the previous two games, then you can't perform. Every game is a new game, and now we have to leave it behind and positively prepare for the next ones and try to win all other games.”

This was to be the last ODI tournament for Shahid Afridi as well as Misbah. Afridi will be disappointed that he failed to fire, getting to just 116 runs and two wickets from seven matches.

Misbah, on the other hand, led from the front, steadying the innings when Pakistan most needed it, to become its leading run-getter with 350 runs at an average of 50.

Sharifs Naya Pakistan Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has promised infrastructure and developmental projects in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). In a veiled reference to the 'Naya Pakistan' slogan touted by the the Pakistan Tehkreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Nawaz said he wanted to see a 'Naya Khyber Pakhtunkhwa'.

He said the PTI-led government in KP had been given every opportunity to remedy the problems faced by the province, but it had failed.

"We are laying the foundations for a new Pakistan. We did it before, we are doing it today, and in the future you will see the government will not just make a new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but the best Khyber Pakhtunkhwa."

He claimed no new motorway had been built in Pakistan after the completion of the Peshawar Islamabad - Lahore motorway, and said that the government has now planned to extend the motorway to Karachi in an effort to make various

parts of the country accessible by road and bring the provinces closer together. He also said that Hazara motorway is not far from completion, and the day that a Peshawar - Kabul motorway is built is not far either.

"Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will have expressways and motorways, and the PML-N will build them for you and your future generations," he stated.

He said his government will build hospitals, schools and universities in KP. Anticipating an extension of the laptop scheme, he said that within the next three to four years, children would be eligible for thousands more laptops.

He also addressed the problem of terrorism in the province, as well as the electricity shortfall.

He also advised the president of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter of PML-N to appoint upright candidates to contest the KP local government elections.

MEP Presented With Pakistan’s Highest Honour

British MEP, Sajjad Karim, was recently presented with Pakistan’s highest national honour to nonPakistanis for services that have helped the country. He was awarded the Sitara-i-Qaid-i-Azam in Islamabad by Mamnoon Hussain, the President of Pakistan, joining ranks with the British Queen and Nelson Mandela.

Dr Karim - who represents the North West of England - has been one of the most prominent British politicians to advocate Pakistan’s case within the EU, and the UK has been at the forefront in

supporting Pakistan. Links have developed significantly over the past decade through the efforts of Sajjad and the European Parliament Friends of Pakistan group which he founded in 2004.

In December 2013, following an eight year campaign, the European Parliament finally approved GSP+ trade status for Pakistan, which allows Pakistani textiles to flow easily into Europe. It is estimated to create one million jobs in the country’s ailing textile industry and the EU and UK are keen to combat terrorism by supporting stability and security in the region. European consumers will also benefit from cheaper imports made in Pakistan.

In recognition of his work towards achieving this, Dr Karim was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Management and Technology in Lahore and travelled to Pakistan to be presented with the award by the then Governor of Punjab, Mohammad Sawar, himself a past Member of the UK Parliament in Westminster.

EU Says Pakistan Should Halt All Executions A spokesperson of the European Union (EU) has said that the government of Pakistan should halt all executions as capital punishment violates international law and basic human rights. The spokesperson referred to the death penalty as an unjust and cruel punishment and said capital punishment should be eliminated globally.

The government has executed 48 convicts since the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted following the horrific terrorist attacks on the Army Public School in Peshawar last year.

The condemnation of the death penalty by the EU comes at a time when the government is set to hang underage convict, Shafqat Hussain on Mar 19, 2015. Hussain's case has triggered outrage from rights campaigners, who complain he did not get a fair trial and was only 15 at the time of the killing.

The EU is only one of many international organi-

sations urging the government to halt executions of convicts all over the country. Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch have also called for a stop to the hangings.

The EU had opposed the removal of the moratorium in December last year, and again expressed concerns during the First Pakistan-EU Local Human Rights Dialogue where the delegation met to discuss Pakistan’s GSP Plus status.

“We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

“We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

Special £5 Coin To Commemorate Birth Of Second Royal Baby A £5 coin will be issued to celebrate the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child. The royal baby is due in mid to late April.

The Queen, the baby’s great-grandmother, approved the decision at a meeting of the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace. Thousands of commemorative coins were struck to celebrate the arrival of George in July 2013 and sold out within days.

In 2013, the Royal Mint produced 10,000 solid sil-

ver £5 coins, which cost £80 each, and 2,013 22 carat gold sovereigns, which cost £800 each. Both featured the prince’s namesake St George. Babies born on the same day as George were entitled to receive one of 2,013 free “lucky” silver pennies.

When George turned one, the occasion was also marked by a commemorative £5 coin – making him the first member of the royal family to have his first birthday honoured with a new UK coin.

Mrs May said the threat the UK faced from terrorists was a real one - and also rebuffed suggestions the police were becoming "armed via the backdoor". The threat level (to the UK) was raised last August to severe, a decision taken independently of ministers.

Coun Imran Hussain, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, said: "The community-based welfare advice services have been greatly appreciated and

welcomed by the people who have used them.

Often the services have been the starting point for people to understand the kind of support they can get, bringing a range of organisations together to solve often complex and very different problems. Our evaluation of the programme shows how important it is to have advice delivered in a range of venues across the district in order to reach the most vulnerable people in our society.

Tackling poverty, health inequalities and supporting the vulnerable are council priorities and the part played by advice services has been recognised despite the big spending cuts the council has been forced to undertake.”

With the Easter holiday here, a growing number of parents have taken their children out of school to avoid the inevitable high prices - despite it being against the law. Over half of parents now believe that it is acceptable for children to miss school in order to get a better holiday deal, according to a survey. It is possible to save almost £1,000 by taking a child out of school two days early, or as much as £250 by taking them out one day early.

With potentially huge savings, many believe it outweighs the fines incurred for missing school - a maximum of £60 per pupil per parent if paid within 21 days. And with holiday prices often rising by as much as an additional 100 per cent when the school holidays start, the savings gained from taking one day off at the beginning or end of term can be the difference between a family being able to afford to go abroad, or staying at home.

In a recent report published by the Department for Education, there were one million fewer school days lost to term-time holidays in the autumn and spring terms of the 2013/14 academic year when compared to those of 2012/13.

However, the myth that pulling a child out of education for holidays is harmless to their education has been disproved by evidence. Allowing pupils to regularly miss school can be hugely detrimental to a child's life chances. The most recent annual figures show we are making progress, with 130,000 fewer pupils regularly missing school.

Parents should never simply discount a possible penalty notice from the cost of a cheaper holiday. Taking children out of school without permission for a holiday is a criminal offence, and when doing so parents are risking prosecution which could mean much higher financial penalties and a criminal record.

Obese Women ‘40% More Likely To Develop A Form Of Cancer’ Obese women are 40% more likely to develop certain types of cancer than those who are slimmer, a leading charity has claimed. Being excessively overweight increases a woman’s risk of post-menopausal breast cancer as well as cancer of the bowel, gall bladder, womb, kidney, pancreas and gullet, said Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

In a group of 1,000 obese women, 274 will be

diagnosed with a weight-related cancer in their lifetime, compared with 194 in a similar group of healthy weight woman, according to figures released by the charity.

“Losing weight isn’t easy, but you don’t have to join a gym and run miles every day or give up your favourite food forever. Just making small changes that you can maintain in the long term can have a real impact” CRUK. One way obesity could increase the risk of cancer is through the production of hormones by fat cells, especially oestrogen. In the UK it is estimated that 18,000 women develop cancer as a result of being overweight or obese each year, said CRUK. Dr Julie Sharp, the charity’s head of health information, said: “We know that our cancer risk depends on a combination of our genes, our environment and other aspects of our lives, many of which we can control. Helping people understand how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the first place remains crucial in tackling the disease.”

The man smiled and said, “Come on in with

me. I’ll buy you a rose.” He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother’s flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The election is now less than six weeks away, there are many issues which are being debated.

The issue that has taken my interest is housing and for the first time in my memory it is a subject that is being discussed with all the parties addressing the topic. Generally it is a subject that gets relegated behind other policy issues not this time.

The planning system holds the key to future development. Many people will argue this needs a overhaul not just tweaking, the system has evolved over many years and could be modernised even further. Successive governments have looked at varying or amending various planning laws over many years this has had an effect. But one question that keeps coming up is that we should start looking at Greenfield sites or more particularly the Green Belt. Clearly this is an "elephant in the room” moment people are reluctant to talk about it because it arouses many emotions. I can say that in the last few years the question is beginning to be asked albeit apologetically. It is clear this debate has a long way to go, but it is without doubt that planning has a huge role to play.

So why is it being discussed, the answer lies in history .Housing was a major issue following the second world war with the country rebuilding, many new homes were built coinciding with major social housing programmes. It was a boom time in house building which also helped in creating employment. Since those days there has not been such intensity in house building with demand for homes increasing year on year to the extent that it has now reached a stage where inTHE PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR tervention is needed.

The need for a different type of offer to the standard care home is a demand, which is beginning to be filled by Extra Care Villages. The issue is that we need a major initiative to address this growing need.

The challenge for any Government is how to accommodate this need without making it unaffordable.

LAND It is a finite commodity which needs to be used for the benefit of improving and addressing the needs of society. There is a debate around how public sector land should be used, with some people arguing that it should be used to alleviate the developing housing crises.

The Green Belt issue will also be a major challenge for the future.

In conclusion I hope this article has given you a flavour of the debate surrounding housing, it’s going to develop as years go by. The important point is that it is on the agenda of all the political parties.

As Norman Kirk a former Prime Minister of New Zealand said people want: Somewhere to Live, Someone to Love, Something to Do and Something to Hope For in my opinion a very simple formula of expectation from Government.

Pakistan’s Strategic Importance People often say that Pakistan is a poor country. With weak institutions, shabby infrastructure facilities, limited provision of electricity and gas, inflation, illiteracy, extremism, terrorism, polio and a population growth synonymous with several underdeveloped African nations, Pakistan is truly suffering from numerous crises.

It should however be noted that no matter how poor or impoverished we think our country might be, the world at large views Pakistan with awe and perhaps a hint of deterrence coupled with sincere sympathy.

The media in particular has focused a great deal on the various problems faced by our beloved nation. This should not necessarily be considered a negative thing, as it is important for our people to understand the challenges we face but it is also of paramount significance that our nation comprehends the strategic importance of Pakistan.

It is my opinion that the geography of Pakistan has been the most consequential factor in shaping our history.

Pakistan shares its borders with China, a global economic giant, with India, an emerging global force both economically and militarily, with Iran, an oil rich nation of significant regional and global importance and with Afghanistan, a frequent warzone. The geographical location of Pakistan is such that our nation cannot afford to ignore what goes on in our neighboring countries.

Even though every nation strives for peace and the security of their citizens, conflict is often times, inevitable.

In the last century, America has been the dominant force in global conflicts. It would not be unfair to say that almost every major conflict in the world in one way or another has something to do with today’s superpower. Because of Pakistan’s strategic location, we have in the past, found it wise to involve ourselves in wars which are not completely our own. An important man once said that without America, the Soviets could have been defeated in Afghanistan, without Pakistan, not so much. This one line is enough to explain Pakistan’s strategic importance.

We have fought three wars with our immediate neighbor, India. Much of Pakistan’s history is solely focused on competing militarily with our powerful neighbor. Our insecurity is somewhat justified as we have witnessed first hand, the damage a hostile nation can cause to a

weaker neighbor. This was the reason why Pakistan had no other choice but to develop nuclear arsenal after India’s test in order to ensure that Pakistan and India do not meet in the battlefield again. Nuclear deterrence is perhaps the most important variable in modern conflict resolution.

The emergence of modern technology and innovative war machines has given birth to another kind of war, fought far away from the secure boundaries of a rich country’s well-protected borders. This kind of war is fought with money, intelligence and strategy. As powerful nations cannot afford to go into a conventional war with each other, they often choose to engage in proxy wars.

The Vietnam War was a cold war era proxy war, which lasted for 19 years, 5 months, 4 weeks and one day. While several countries took part in the conflict, it can be implied that the only real participants of this conflict were the Soviet Union and the United States. Estimates show that both sides lost over half million people each, while no side exactly got what they were hoping for. In wars like this, there is no clear winner or loser, since there is no clear player and no clear judge. It could perhaps be said that the episode of Vietnam was a source of immense irritation for the United States forces as their expectations were shattered and their resources plunged. Slowly and slowly, the inferior soviet backed force drained American resources before their ultimate withdrawal.

Afghanistan was the next venue for the proxy war to be fought between these super powers. The CIA along with the ISI found it wise to train mujahideen fighters on Pakistani soil, fueling a hatred of the ‘atheist/kafir’ soviets in their hearts. The soviet war is perhaps the only proxy

war, which the United States has won, and Pakistan’s role in this victory has been most crucial.

It cannot be denied that Pakistan’s military is one of the finest in the world. Our Air force, artillery, corps, Navy and premier intelligence agency is a force to be reckoned with. This is why the world immediately thinks of Pakistan’s armed forces whenever a conflict arises in this region.

The proxy war currently being fought in Yemen is one of absurd contradictions. It is still not clear which side is fighting for which side because allies in one region are enemies in another. To be precise, Irani backed militias are allied with American backed forces to fight ISIS in the Iraqi border. However, the American/Saudi backed forces are fighting against Irani backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The former president has left Yemen, fleeing in the safe domain only Saudi Arabia could provide. The rebels are in control on the ground but they do not necessarily have an upper hand. When America and Saudi Arabia unite against a common enemy and they are genuinely serious in their efforts, it is quite hard to for the rebels to match the undisputed military strength of their enemies.

Saudi Arabia and Iran represent the Sunni and Shia Muslims of the world. Their global significance stems from being associated with a particular strand or version of the Islamic faith. Both are wealthy and powerful but one is blessed with more friends than the other. While Pakistan enjoys a good relationship with both countries, we are more inclined towards Saudi Arabia for very obvious reasons. Firstly, Saudi Arabia has been generous in its aid to Pakistan. At the start of this Government, Saudi Arabia provided over $2 Billion in aid so that our exchange rates could be in a better position. Secondly, Pakistan is Sunni majority state like Saudi Arabia and thus finds itself more ideologically

aligned with their Saudi counterparts. Thirdly, Saudi Arabia is a very close ally of America, so is Pakistan, but Iran is isolated from the international community due to its controversial statements and actions.

So far a coalition of 10 countries has allied with Saudi forces and Pakistan is yet to make a formal decision.

Our Prime Minister along with our Defense Minister have made it very clear that any attack on Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty will evoke a strong response from Pakistan. Our foreign office has briefly stated that a formal request has been issued to them on behalf of the Saudi authorities but a decision is yet to be made. Imran Khan has very clearly stated that Pakistan should not directly involve itself in this conflict while it should be at the forefront of the negotiations. There is one stakeholder, perhaps the most important one in this regard, which has kept an unnerving silence, Pakistan’s Armed Forces.

The decision makers of Pakistan’s strategic policy already have a lot on their plate. A war against the Taliban, escalating border tensions with India and frequent political instability is enough to keep an army busy for a long time but with great power comes great opportunities to benefit. Brother Zia Ul Haq is not generally considered to be a loved personality in Pakistan but there is more to the man than what meets the eye. He served in Jordan, annihilating Palestinian forces and he was a primary commander in the soviet war. He obliterated whoever rose against his interests. We can learn a lot from the old general, after all, he ruled with an iron fist for 11 years, developed a wonderful relationship with Saudi Arabia and America and won a great war of his time.

The consequences of Zia’s policies are evident today.

Pakistan is involved in several international conflicts and is presently a battleground itself for various conflicts whether it is the fight against terrorism or sectarian extremists. Our land mass is already a battle field where innocents die by the thousands and killers are not always held accountable.

The decision whether to intervene in Yemen ultimately lies with the political and military leadership of Pakistan but I feel that the question is not of what, why, where or who but of how much?

Public WiFi not Secure as you think The increase of broadband rollout and the growth of WiFi in public spaces is providing society with the huge benefit of access to the Internet quickly and easily.

But not all WiFi is as secure as we might think it is. Europol’s Cybercrime Division warns that attacks are rising on public WiFi and are a major security risk.

In the UK, key cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham are increasing public WiFi access, whilst restaurants, cafes and bars are also keen provide free WiFi to attract customers.

For most smartphone users public WiFi is always seen as a great way of saving data usage included in their phone tariffs but if you are going to use public WiFi for personal transactions, sensitive data and banking, this may not be the best method.

We are now seeing an increase in the misuse of wi-fi, in order

public WiFi and only use it for non-sensitive data activity if you are unsure about it’s security.

Here are some tips to keep yourself safe when using public WiFi: Always use reputable internet security software on all your devices including your laptop, PC, MAC, tablets and smartphone.
