New youth hub for Rotherham young people The base for Rotherham 's new Integrated Youth Service has been officially opened.

Last week, the Eric Manns Building on Moorgate Street , was unveiled as the Town Centre support Hub for Rotherham Borough Council's new Integrated Youth Support Service.

Coun. Mahroof Hussain, Cabinet Member for Communities and Cohesion for Rotherham Borough Council, together with a group of young people, officially opened the new service Hub.

Thanks to both the authority and the voluntary sector, the Hub will be the central Youth Support core and of course, we must not forget the marvellous £3.5 million MyPlace project, the multi-million pound investment in Rotherham , funded by the Big Lottery Fund."IYSS Centres will be used to bring activities and to young people across all areas the Borough. There are improvements to existing centres and there will be more locally based staff to deliver a wide range of opportunities, activities, a listening ear and practical support and guidance.

However, after his wife's government collapsed in late 1996, he was arrested and charged with corruption, including receiving kickbacks in deals involving a Swiss company.

He was never convicted and denies the charges but spent the next eight years in jail. In 2009 the supreme court scrapped an amnesty law that had dismissed corruption charges against thousands of Pakistani politicians, including Zardari.

EFFECTS OF WELFARE REFORM TAKE HOLD More than £500,000 so far has been paid out to Sheffield residents to help them cope with the impact of the Government’s changes to benefit rules.

Discretionary Housing Payments, funded by the Government, amount to £384,481 of this total.

Sheffield Council awards these to tenants who need help paying their rent following reductions in their housing benefit – due to under-occupancy or the ‘bedroom tax.’

In addition the Council has paid out £130,679 from its own Council Tax Hardship Scheme. This fund helps people who are facing difficulties paying their council tax for the first time. This follows changes to the rules, with the Government replacing council tax benefit with a local scheme of council tax support, run by local authorities.

Since April, 199 tenants have been given priority to move to a smaller home as soon as one becomes available. Of these, 178 say this is due to the effects of welfare reforms.

More changes to benefits are set to come into effect. It is estimated that 4,700 households will be affected by changes to Disability Living Allowance as a new benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is phased in over the next five years. New claim-

ants have gone straight onto PIP since 1 June.

And from August, a cap on the maximum amount of benefits that someone will receive will begin. This will be £500 a week for families and £350 a week for single people. Although the number of households in Sheffield expected to be affected is small at 320, the reduction in benefits will range from £1.24 to £412 per week.

The Council is closely monitoring the impact of Welfare Reform on people living in Sheffield.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Communities and Inclusion, said: “The Government view is that we need to reform the welfare system to help people move into, and progress in work. But what we are actually finding is that working people on lower incomes, who are entitled to income related benefits and tax credits, are also suffering a substantial financial loss.

“Help from the Council is available to people who are struggling with the effects of these changes and we would urge them to contact us. The changes in benefits are complex and many will be affected by more than one. As a Council we are carrying out further research to determine the true impact of this.”

New-Style Cameras To Catch Speeding Bradford Drivers

Many Bradford motorists will have noticed they are now under the scrutiny of a new type of speed camera on roads in and around the city centre. The new distinctive units have sprung up on Westgate, near the New Beehive Inn, and Whetley Hill. technical details of the cameras and how many more are expected to be installed across the district are unknown at this stage. The Council has yet to reveal any information about the new units, which appear much more streamlined than the bulky boxes most motorists are used to.

Truvelo D Cam cameras. The cameras are digital, fixed on higher “smart poles” and are much smaller, and less noticeable, than the previous design, which had to be housed in a larger unit due to the use of film to record offending motorists.

They are also designed to be vandal proof, with no separate cabinet housing the camera’s electronics and do not flash. The cameras never run out of film, unlike the current units which effectively stop working for the period between the film running out and it being re-loaded. It means the number of speeding fines is expected to rise in areas the new cameras are installed.

Running costs are also lower, as film is no required to be regularly collected and developed.

A few years ago it appeared the number of speed cameras would fall after the Coalition government cut off funding. But with a rise in the number of motorists taking, and paying for, speed awareness courses, a new pot of money for cameras has become available. The courses are offered to motorists caught speeding and can cost almost £100, but are popular as they allow drivers to avoid penalty points.

The Lahore Born, Pakistani-American Billionaire buys Fulham Football Club.

On Christmas Eve of 2010 I was sat in the Marriot Hotel, Islamabad with my friend Shabir Akhtar.

We were in the country for a week to attend a family friend’s wedding, which happen to be at the Marriot as well. Whilst slurping our tea and relaxing earlier in the evening in one of the many guest lounges, there had been a large commotion and fuss as the flat screen television on the wall behind our sofa broadcast an interview from the then Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. As it turned out he was actually just on the other side of the wall, attending a wedding celebration, with secret service personnel crawling all over the corridors. We jested with the secret service personnel that we were a little tired so they should give our apologies to the Prime Minster and would be next door if he needed us. They laughed it off and we continued with our evening.

By late evening we were chilling (literally it would get very cold) in the hotels outside Shisha lounge. Having made the acquaintance of a couple of chaps from America, we were discussing politics, culture and the American Muslim identity, when the conversation fell to sports. This is where we were informed of a Pakistani – American called Shahid Khan, who had acquired a NFL Football Team, The Jacksonville Jaguars. A charismatic man who wielded a trade mark handle bar moustache. At the inaugural game tens of thousands of Jaguar fans had equipped themselves with replica moustaches, whilst shouting his name in a chorus line. Such was their endearment with the new owner.

In July of this year, the magic and charisma of Shahid khan came across the Atlantic, as he purchased Fulham football Club from Mohamed Al Fayed for an undisclosed sum reported to be between £150-£200 million pounds.

Apparently Al Fayed had converted his loans to the club into equity thus enabling the club to be sold debt free.

Khan a modest man characteristically understated his acquisition from its illustrious former owner, stating that, “he was very fortunate to have been introduced to Mohammed Al Fayed a man he respected and admired immensely for his life and accomplishments and above all what he has given others”.

He went on to say that Although Fulham is a perfect club at a perfect time for him; he wanted to be clear that he viewed himself as not so much the owner but a custodian of the club on behalf of the fans. Furthermore his priorities were to ensure that the club and Craven Cottage each had a viable and sustained Premier League future.

It would seem that Shahid Khan is a man of his word, with a proposed multi million investment in Craven Cottage Fulham’s home since 1896. Khans own

journey from his birth place of Lahore, Pakistan, to the United States and his pursuit and attainment of the American Dream, is quite literally the stuff of legend and paperback. As a 16 year old he migrated to study engineering at the University of Illinois. Whilst still a student he began working for Flex-NGate in 1970 and after graduating the following year with a BSC in Industrial Engineering, he continued to work for the company until finally leaving in 1978.

Khan now was free to pursue his new venture in designing and manufacturing innovative lightweight, continuous metal bumper systems, with no seams to corrode or rust. Today Khans’ designs for bumper systems, form the basis of two-thirds of all North American pick-up trucks and sport utilities. All manufactured and supplied by a Flex N-Gate company.

Khans return to purchase Flex-N-gate in 1980, leading him to build it into a global leader that today employs 16,000 people at 52 manufacturing and 9 product development and engineering facilities throughout Canada, The United States, Mexico Spain and Brazil.

In 2010 Khan set his sights on moving into the sports world, with an attempt to buy the NFL’s St. Louis Rams. Although unsuccessful he did win friends with his charisma and approach within the NFL’s elite ownership group. This was the assistance he needed when he finally got into the league with his purchase of the Jaguars for around 770 million dollars.

In 2012 Khans net worth was estimat-

ed at over 2.5 billion dollars. He was ranked 179th in the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans. He is the overall 491st wealthiest person in the world and the richest person of Pakistani origin. It would seem that one way or another Fulham fans are going to know that they have a new owner in Shahid Khan.

UK To Overhaul Curriculum The British government will changes in the curriculum to catch up with the world's best education systems. Prime Minister David Cameron says this "revolution in education" is vital for the country's economic prosperity.

Labour said the curriculum should be written by experts and not depend on ministers' "personal prejudices". Five year olds will be tackling fractions and computer algorithms, as per the new system.

Teachers' unions have warned that the timetable for implementing the changes in autumn 2014 is "completely unrealistic".

Head teachers have also asked whether politicians should be so directly involved in deciding what is taught in the classroom.

'Engaging and tough' The re-written national curriculum sets out the framework for what children in England's state schools should be taught between the ages of five and 14.

However, academies - which are now a majority of secondary schools - will not be required to follow the curriculum.

"This is a curriculum that is rigorous, engaging and tough," said the prime minister.

Education Secretary Michael Gove said the changes to the

curriculum were necessary to keep pace with the achievement of pupils in other countries. "No national curriculum can be modernised without paying close attention to what's been happening in education internationally," said Mr Gove.

He cited Hong Kong, Massachusetts, Singapore and Finland as "the world's most successful school systems".

The new-look curriculum puts a stronger emphasis on skills such as "essay writing, problem-solving, mathematical modelling and computer programming"

New Uninsured Driver Fines Are Not Enough Among the motoring offence reforms being introduced by the government this month is an increase in the fixed penalty for driving without insurance, from £200 to £300. However, the AA Insurance, says that while this increase is welcome, it will do little to deter those who habitually drive without cover.

It will certainly catch those who have perhaps neglected to renew their cover promptly or find themselves accidentally uninsured, perhaps after a long period overseas or in hospital.

But many uninsured drivers are young men who may already have several motoring offences to their name. The cars they drive may have no MoT; or tax and offenders often have no driving licence or have already been banned. In fact last year, 11,000 convicted uninsured drivers previously been disqualified.

Offenders may be sent to court because of the seriousness of their offence or elect to do so.

Although the maximum fine available is £5,000, this has never been imposed. It is means tested which means that the average fine is £299, just under the new £300 fixed penalty. Last year more than half (53%) of court fines for uninsured driv-

ing were £200 or less. This is nine times less than the typical £1,750 cost of car insurance for a young motorist with no convictions and a clean licence, aged 17-22.

For the habitual offender who is used to the inside of a courtroom this is hardly a disincentive, when they can easily obtain another cheap car for cash, no

questions asked, and continue offending. One out of every 25 motorists on Britain’s roads is believed to be driving without insurance and that every year, uninsured drivers kill 160 and inflict injury on 23,000 innocent people.

Although the number of uninsured drivers is falling thanks to the introduction of Continuous Insurance Enforcement in 2011, the chances of being hit by an uninsured driver in Britain are still higher than almost anywhere else in Europe. The likelihood of a successful recovery of damages from an uninsured

driver is extremely low. They are often unemployed or on very low incomes – hence the low average fine meted out by the courts – and frequently associated with other criminal activities.

The AA is calling on the government to ‘think again’ about how to tackle the blight of uninsured driving. Uninsured drivers cost this country at least £380 million every year and adds about £33 to the cost of every car insurance policy, quite apart from emergency services and court costs. Yet although the penalties are already severe, the current regime is clearly not a deterrent. Large fines for those who can’t pay them isn’t effective. But if uninsured drivers know they’ll quickly be caught then that will act as a big disincentive. Clearly more police patrols equipped with automatic number plate recognition technology, which helps identify cars with no insurance, MoT or tax, will help.

Britain needs a tough, no-compromise approach to uninsured drivers which should include community service. For extreme offenders, electronic tagging or as a last resort, custodial sentences should be considered too.

Sheffield Adventure Playground Celebrates Staying Open For Summer Supporters of a Sheffield adventure playground have been celebrating staying open for the summer.

Sheffield Council budget cuts meant the loss of staff from Activity Sheffield to run the playground in Crowther Place, off Abbeydale Road. The council decided to deploy workers in a mobile service instead, something that also affected Pitsmoor Adventure Playground and Verdon Street recreation ground in Burngreave.

The pilot scheme aims to contribute towards the overall attraction and confidence of the Darnall area through a shop front improvement programme.

Two years ago, a citywide strategy was approved by Sheffield City Council to help, support and promote local shopping centres.

Support has been targeted at the worst performing district centres. Darnall shopping centre was identified as having an unwelcoming environment, with some buildings in a poor state of repair and a high number of badly-maintained, empty shops.

Through this Strategy, the Council is using £300,000 funding from the Local Growth Fund as a catalyst to stimulate private sector investment in Darnall

and bring together untapped resources in local partners, such as traders and voluntary organisations to improve the area where they live and work. It is proposed that 100 per cent assistance be granted to meet the costs of the shop front improvements, up to a maximum of £5,000 per property.

The proposed scheme is just one of a number of initiatives to be delivered under the successful centres programme for Darnall.

The wider regeneration framework for the centre includes improvements to the general street scene to make the area feel cleaner and safer, training and support for traders, and enabling housing development on nearby vacant sites.

This project follows a number of regeneration initiatives in retail centres across the city, including Banner Cross, Hillsborough, Sheffield Antiques Quarter, Spital Hill and Stocksbridge.

DIY Wills May Mean Muslims Pay 80% More Inheritance Tax

This column is based on a very useful and enlightening discussion I had with my dear friends, Prof Dr Muhammad Al-Ghazali and Prof Dr Khaleeq-uz-Zaman.

In one of my previous articles I had mentioned that many educated people feel that the solution to all our problems lies in following western culture. Our spiritual and cultural assets have been badly tarnished in the process.

The evils that have crept into our society can never be solved through economic means alone or by slavishly following western norms. Spirituality has an important role to play, since it is through this exercise that one learns what the truth is and also earns the blessings of the Almighty. We know that if a person’s goal in life is to please Allah, that person will not indulge in any wrongdoing or evil. They will always look towards Allah for fulfilment of their needs and to obtain peace of mind. They would never prostrate themselves before any adversary, no matter what.

Spiritual life is superior to, and more important than, worldly life. A human being is not merely made up of flesh and bones and worldly needs. The Almighty has created us for a noble purpose, viz to live life in accordance with His edicts and to make the best use of the resources of the world that He has put at our disposal.

However, this should be done within the limits prescribed by Him. For this purpose, the Almighty has blessed us with enormous capabilities. If we utilise these judiciously, we can achieve our goals. If we don’t, then there is little difference between a human being and an animal that is behaving instinctively. It is the ability to choose between good and bad that distinguishes human being from animals.

The above-mentioned capabilities are attributed to spirituality.

Do-it-yourself wills are leaving some Muslim families exposed to 80 per cent more inheritance tax (IHT) liabilities than people of other religions. The risk stems from Muslims’ religious obligation to make a will that is compliant with Sharia - the religious law of Islam.

Lawyers have warned that basic Sharia wills do not take into account the tax benefits offered to spouses under English law and could see Muslims bearing a much greater IHT burden than necessary. A Manchester based Law Chambers firm says it has found basic Sharia will templates to be ill-suited to the needs of eight out of 10 Muslim clients it has advised in the last 12 months.

The DIY Sharia-compliant wills have become popular because they are easily available online

for free, but they don’t take into account a fundamental tax relief available under English law – namely that gifts to a surviving spouse or civil partner are exempt from inheritance tax. Under Sharia law a husband is only required to leave 12.5 per cent of his estate to his wife. Template Sharia wills include this as standard, which means up to 87.5 per cent of the person’s estate could fall under inheritance tax completely unnecessarily.”

Other heirship rules in Islam, which stipulate the proportion of an estate which must be left to relatives, can also pose additional tax-planning problems.

The basic rule is that at least two thirds of a deceased Muslim’s estate must be distributed amongst surviving relatives.

However, DIY Sharia wills do not take into account vital informa-

tion, such as whether the client’s parents reside abroad or are in ill health and therefore incapable of accepting an inheritance. Also, if the prescribed beneficiaries such as children or a spouse are no longer Muslim, they may be barred from inheriting or becoming an executor and trustee.

The fact that many Muslim countries do not charge an inheritance tax on death has exacerbated the problem, as there is a lot of confusion around exactly what planning needs to be put in place. Dying without a Sharia-compliant will can render a Muslim’s estate very difficult and expensive to administer, but it’s vital that proper legal advice is sought to ensure that any will not only complies with Sharia but is also tax efficient under English law.

Channel 4 Boss Defends Decision To Broadcast Azan Broadcasting a Muslim call to prayer fits in with Channel 4's public service remit, chief executive David Abraham has told MPs. Channel 4 is currently airing the prayer every morning during Ramadan - the religious festival which sees millions of worshippers around the world fast for a

month.

An MP said that the broadcast could be viewed as "patronising" and questioned whether Channel 4's public service remit would be better served by programmes on Islam and the Muslim community. Channel 4 did do a history of Islam series last year,

which was broadcast in prime time however the predominance of media coverage around the Muslim community is associated with issues that are not positive.

The broadcast, at 3am, had attracted 186,000 viewers in a slot that was normally watched by around 35,000.

British ‘Migrants Go Home’ Van Stirs Controversy

Britain's government on Monday defended a controversial campaign featuring vans with billboards urging illegal immigrants to "go home or face arrest", after criticism from a senior minister.

Two trucks, each displaying a huge poster with a number for migrants to text if they wish to return to their country of origin, were driven around six London boroughs for a week in a pilot scheme by the interior ministry.

Posters, leaflets and advertisements in local newspapers will run for a further month.

Business Secretary Vince Cable, a member of the Liberal Democrat party which is the junior partner in the coalition government with Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives, called the campaign "stupid and offensive".

But Cameron's spokesman defended the vans, saying it was "clear that this is already working" and that getting illegal immigrants to leave voluntarily was the most cost-effective solution.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said ethnic communities would take the billboards as a "sign of open warfare". "I think it's very Big Brother, very stateish, very sort of East Germany circa the 1980s, it's just a horrid way of doing it," said the member of the European parliament.

There was also a backlash from British commentators and on social media. "Go home" had been a racist slogan of abuse against migrants when many were growing up in the 1970s.

In June Britain said it would charge "high-risk" adult visitors from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana a refundable bond of £3,000 for a six-month visa.

Since we are going through a very special period in the Islamic Calendar, it would be remiss not to mention a few words about the holiest month of the year for all Muslims. It is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar and a time of increased devotion and worship, self-improvement and spiritual reflection. It is the fourth pillar of the five pillars of Islam. It is of course, the holy month of Ramadhan!

Ulemas’ have stated that the act of fasting is said to re-direct the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities that have accumulated over the year. It also teaches us how to better practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of added generosity.

Many people choose to pay the compulsory charity (zakat), during this month.

Let’s also not forget that the last 10 days of Ramadhan include Lailut-ul-Qadr, sometimes referred to as "the night

of power" or 'the night of decree". It occurs on an oddnumbered night, i.e. the night of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th, and is considered the most holy night of the year.

It is stated in the Quran that worship during Lailut-ul-Qadr is better than one thousand months of worship. What a wonderful blessing from the Almighty Allah (swt).

How refreshing therefore, to see so many more people dressed in white, ‘topis’ on head, making their way to the mosques 5 times a day, to remember Allah (swt) and offer their prayers. The fantastic atmosphere around and within the mosques is one of tranquillity, peace and humility, because in addition to abstaining from eating and drinking, we are also required to increase restraint, such as abstaining from sinful speech & conduct and show humbleness & kindness towards each other. It is obvious that many people have taken the opportunity to come off the hamster wheel, and take a momentary step away from the rat-race that engulfs so many of us during the rest of the year!

Even young children endeavour to copy the elders with such excitement and enthusiasm to complete as many fasts as possible. A brilliant way to practice for later life, when fasting becomes obligatory.

Once inside the mosque, there is a different sort of ambience around, with people

both young and old, scattered around engrossed in individual prayer and devotion, and recitation of the Holy Quran, the goal being to build up as many acts of worship as possible knowing that the reward is multiplied many times over.

It is only with the uncountable blessings of Allah (swt) that during Ramadhan, we witness this remarkable transformation not only in our local mosques or across the country, but on a truly global scale, across the entire world.

Perhaps we should all be seeking help from Allah (swt) to develop in us, the understanding and the ability to continue with our modified behaviours, attitudes, practices etc., beyond Ramadhan and Eid-ulFitr. The intense ‘training’ that we receive during Ramadhan that revitalises our soul and strengthens our ‘Emaan’, should help to ensure that the change within us makes us a better Muslim and a better human being for the rest of the year!

Salman Khan Charged With Killing Homeless

An Indian court has charged Bollywood star Salman Khan with culpable homicide over a 2002 hit-and-run case that could send him to prison for 10 years.

Khan, 47, is alleged to have

rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle on to a pavement and over five sleeping homeless people in suburban Mumbai, killing one and injuring four others. Appearing in court wearing a grey shirt and black trousers he pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, an offence carrying 10 years in prison.

After charging the actor, the judge added: "Salman Khan's blood contained 30 mg of alcohol, according to that he was drunk." Mumbai's laws prohibit anyone from driving or attempting to drive a vehicle if their blood alcohol levels exceed 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

NHS Direct Seeks 111 Withdrawal NHS Direct, a major provider of the NHS non-emergency telephone service in England is seeking to pull out of its contracts due to severe problems.

Initially, it won 11 of the 46 regional contracts for the service, covering 34% of the population, reported BBC. It has already pulled out of two services, but the remaining nine are now "financially unsustainable", quotes BBC. The whole NHS 111 service itself has been plagued with problems, including reports of patients facing long waits.

The regional services are run by a range of organisations including private companies, ambulance trusts and NHS Direct - which ran the old telephone advice line.

In July, the organisation warned that the volume of calls was 30-40% lower than contracted levels, leading to lower income and leaving the remaining nine services "financially unsustainable".

British Travellers to Saudi Arabia at High Risk

British travellers to Saudi Arabia are being subjected to high risk due to lack of awareness about health risks and preventive measures. Consequently, it will Increase the risk of the spread of avoidable infectious diseases including Coronavirus in the community by these returning travellers.

The annual hajj pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca in Saudi Arabia will be taking place this year between October 13 and 18, drawing three million followers of the Muslim faith from all around the world, including over 25,000 prospective travellers from the UK. The pilgrimage however presents serious health risks for spreading disease between countries, leading Saudi Arabia in particular to limit visas of pilgrimage hopefuls.

Saudi Health Ministry has announced that the country will no issue visas to the elderly, pregnant women, or children for both pilgrimages this year, in order to prevent the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) from turning pandemic and

reaching countries around the world. In the similar family of SARS, which killed approximately 800 people in 2002-2003, MERS has killed more than 40 people and currently has a mortality rate of above 60 percent. Eightyone cases have been documented globally, and 45 people have died as a result of the respiratory infection. Although it is difficult to acquire the infection from hu-

A valid certificate of vaccination against meningitis is also required along with an optional vaccination against influenza as a precaution against flu attacks is also stressed.

Former UK MP renounces British citizenship to join politics in Pakistan

Former Glasgow MP Mohammad Sarwar, who gave up British citizenship for a political role in Pakistan, is tipped to take on the role of governor Punjab.

Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, 60, was elected as Labour MP for Glasgow Govan in 1997 and served until 2010. Mr Sarwar was also chairman of the Commons Scottish Affairs Committee. Sarwar was engaged in social work already and now he wanted to serve the masses through politics. He says whatever role in politics Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assigned him, he would fulfil it. Decision to make him Punjab governor ultimately rests on PM Nawaz.

Arriving in Pakistan, Chaudhry Sarwar said there was great potential in the Pakistani nation and the country must exceed in progress and development.

To a question pertaining to MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Sarwar said Scotland Yard was not influenced by anyone over this matter, adding even prime minister could not transfer constable. He said decision of on Altaf Hussain would be made on merit.

Punjab, with a population of 96 million, is the largest state in the country.

Days before Ramadan even began letterboxes saw a constant stream of charities flooding us with requests for our cash.

In the holy month and right into Eid the idea that you should do and buy particular things ‘because it is Ramadan or Eid’ is portrayed constantly. Is Ramadan just another excuse for Muslim charities and mosques to collect money?

The month of Ramadan is a month of celebration. But it has been hijacked by some charities that are keen to take your money.

Those most guilty are the TV channels who see this as an opportunity to raise as much money as possible. Are we seeing a resemblance to the tactics and emotional blackmail used on some TV channels during Ramadan with the Evangelical Christian channels.

Muslims during the holy month are taught to be extra generous. They are taught to be extra pious and to be extra forgiving.

So, when you are asked to hand over money to a charity you will more than likely do so. Now, there are some extremely pious and sincere charities who will ask for specific donations. But what we have now is a breed of extremely persistent charities who want you to part with your

cash on a daily basis. Should we be permitted to question their integrity? The answer is ‘no’ you cannot. Or you daren’t in case you are accused of criticising ‘sincere and noble work’.

Charities are being run like any other businesses and people find it difficult to grasp this concept.

You will also be attending countless charitable events in Ramadan. It is important that you check to see if the event or the charity they are backing is registered with the Charities Commission.

These days it seems ‘goodwill’ is the most valuable trait you can have.

New Bradford to London railway link could be in pipeline

Business leaders in Bradford have welcomed an assessment by transport bosses which found the city could get a new fast train service to the capital as a byproduct of the HS2 rail project.

Transport authority Metro has been looking into what the East Coast Mainline could be used for once the HS2 line is running highspeed trains between Leeds and London. One of its suggestions is a direct, fast service between Bradford and London each hour.

Mike Cartwright, policy executive at Bradford Chamber, said: “Despite its name, HS2 has nev-

There are only about four direct services to the capital each day from Bradford Interchange, with a journey time of between twoand-a-half and three-and-a-half hours.

Other ideas by Metro chiefs include maintaining the half-hourly service between Wakefield Westgate and London, but with faster journey times.

A report going to its executive suggests that changes to the existing rail network, once it is freed up, could bring economic benefits of between £300 million and £800 million to the region, on top of the benefits of HS2 itself. The authority is expected to urge HS2 Ltd to revisit its plans and incorporate an improved offer on the East Coast Mainline.

HOW TO MAKE OUR CHILDREN’S FEEL SECURE

We all want our children to be safe. We keep them from danger and make sure they are aware of things around them that can cause harm, like electrical hazards, sharp objects, etc.

Today I want us to think how we can help our children to feel secure but not just safe from physical danger. We want to think especially about their feelings and emotions.

As parents, we need to give our infants a secure place to grow and learn and develop a healthy, happy personality.

There has been a lot in the press recently about care, it is a fact that we have an ageing population who are living longer and leading more active lives. Inevitably this means the need for elderly care facilities will rise. How this care is provided will change ,whether it is from home, in a care home or a retirement village will evolve over the next decade or so.

It is predicted that the over 65 sector of the population could potentially rise substantially over the next decade,the BME percentage will also see significant rises. So not only is there going to be a need for more care facilities generally, the specialist market will also increase.

A specific area that is likely to see a rise is specialist care homes specifically catering for different minority needs, there are very few such facilities in this country at the present time. The demand for such facilities certainly does exist.

The specialist care market for minority needs is evolving because a lot of these communities are now second or third generation and the need is now coming to light. It now provides a business opportunity for entrepreneurial developers/operators. The main ingredients needed for a successful operation is location. It is accepted that elderly residents do not want to be too far

away from the communities they have lived in and are familiar with.

A comfortable environment is very important with facilities that they could relate to, close to places of worship,medical facilities ,specialist food shops etc.

As mentioned previously we have a very small number of specialist BME care homes,there are a few which cater for the Hindu community located in the South of the country.

The need for care homes catering for South Asian communities is inevitably going to rise,whether we choose to accept this or not is arguably a matter of time.

The opportunities to cater for this need provide major business opportunities, there are a number of possible concepts, let us look at a few these: Care At Home Clearly this is not an area that I am an expert in, but there have been an increasing number of companies being set up to provide care to the general public. Such a concept could be put together which would provide a good business and service opportunity aimed at the specialist BME market.

As Local Authorities grapple with difficult financial circumstances the private sector could potentially fulfil this role. The property need in setting up such a service is an office base with a mobile workforce.

Clearly before you embark on such a venture you will need to work with and take the advice of experts in this field, as there will be many legal and legislative requirements that will need to be addressed and fulfilled.

Care Home A concept that we are more familiar with,these can range from small facilities with say twenty bed spaces to over a hundred bed spaces, the average traditionally has been around sixty bed spaces. Generally

speaking each resident has their own bedroom with possibly an ensuite facility,with all other facilities shared. The important ingredient for this to be successful is to have the facility in the right location with staff who are sympathetic to the needs of the residents,particularly for homes catering for the BME/ South Asian residents.

In terms of property needs you could convert a large property in

grounds, or more so now build a new home. There are many regulations that you need to follow so the need for expert advice is paramount before you embark on such a venture.

Retirement Homes There are a number of such facilities which have been built in the last decade or so,some with a limited amount of care provision aimed at the 55 plus resident. Generally these facilities provide a safe environment with residents from similar age groups. The popularity of these has been rising because there are models which support purchase ,rental and equity share.

The facility will include a secure environment and your own front door key to a one or two bedroomed apartment.

Property wise you need a good site in a popular location,with good local facilities Retirement Villages There are different names for such facilities sometimes referred to as Extra Care Schemes.

They provide either one or two bedroomed apartments,with one of the main differences being that you can access a sliding scale of care provision. Bradford safety device now exported worldwide A lifting device invented by a former Bradford welder is now being sold around the world after being developed for commercial production in the UK. About 4,000 ‘GasGrab’ units have been sold since Lionel Foster first developed the idea following a back injury while lifting gas cylinders by hand. Mr Foster, of Wyke, worked with the University of Bradford's engineering and physiotherapy departments to test the GasGrab, which picks up heavy cylinders using a system of levers and hinges, to allow them to be moved safely without any effort.

The test results proved there was a significant reduction in the risk of skeletal injury when lifting a cylinder using a GasGrab rather then lifting them using a ‘bear hug’.

So far, around 60 per cent of GasGrabs sold have been into the United States, with others sold to Norway, Japan, Malaysia, Canada, Mexico, Falkland Islands, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil and Taiwan. Customers include the armed forces, BP, BOC, National Grid, and other blue-chip companies.

Crackdown On Whiplash Claims Urged Insurers must "get their house in order" and end practices which encourage fraud and exaggeration in vehicle whiplash injury claims, a report by MPs has said.

Ministers should consider reducing the limitation period for road accident insurance claims, and require whiplash claimants to produce more supporting evidence, said the report from the House of Commons Transport Committee. But genuine claimants should not be demonised and the assertion that the UK is the "whiplash capital of the world" cannot be proved or disproved, the MPs said.

The report also warned that access to justice could be impaired

by Government proposals to switch whiplash claims between

£1,000 and £5,000 to the small claims court, particularly for people who do not feel confident to represent themselves against insurers who will use legal professionals to contest claims.

The use of the small claims track could also prove counterproductive in efforts to discourage fraudulent and exaggerated claims as expert evidence is not generally submitted.

In their report the MPs said: "We were surprised to hear that insurers will sometimes make an offer to personal injury claimants even before a medical report has been received. We also note that our previous recommendation on making the links between insurers and other parties involved with claims more transparent has

been ignored. Insurers must immediately get their house in order and end practices which encourage fraud and exaggeration.

If not, the Government should take steps to protect motorists."

The Rotherham Hospital Charity recently hosted the very first Dr Ted’s Children’s Appeal Charity Dinner with major sponsors Willmott Dixon, raising over £7,500. The evening was a huge success, filled with live entrainment, dinner, dancing and a charity auction and raffle.

The funds raised at the event will provide two new ventilation units for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Rotherham Hospital that will further improve the level of care that can be provided for young children with breathing difficulties and consequently reduce the length of time they need to stay in hospital.

Charity Dinner raises over £6,500 for Rotherham Hospital Dr Ted’s Children’s Appeal

Rotherham Hospital’s SCBU provides support for babies who are born prematurely, for those who have complications after birth or for those who just need a helping hand to getting fit and well enough to go home.

The Dr Ted’s Children’s Appeal, one of The Rotherham Health Foundation’s charitable appeals, often supports SCBU by helping to provide them with both equipment and facilities.

Tracy Williams, Charity Development Officer at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re so grateful for everything that Willmott Dixon have done to support us over the last year. Their contribution to Dr Ted’s dinner dance really helped to make the evening a great success. Football: New Fulham boss England look to complete an Ashes urged to tap Pakistan talent series win over Australia at Old Trafford

Pakistan football chiefs Tuesday urged new Fulham owner Shahid Khan to go back to his roots and tap up young talent in the South Asian country.

Billionaire Khan, born in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, took over the English Premier League club in a deal struck on Friday.

The 62-year-old vowed to build on the foundations left by previous owner Mohamed Al Fayed, and Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) marketing director Sardar Naveed Haider urged him to look to Pakistan.

"We are trying to make a contact with him to request him to come to Pakistan and see the burgeoning talent in the country and get them an opportunity to groom at the Fulham academy," Haider said.

Pakistan were among the top Asian footballing nations until the 1970s, but lack of government support and the overwhelming popularity of cricket left the game in the doldrums.

They now sit at a lowly 167th in FIFA rankings -- languishing below Bermuda, Palestine and the Solomon Islands -- but Haider claims signs of improvement are visible.

"We definitely have talent at our disposal. Look at our structure in

which our Under-14 and Under-16 teams are doing well," he said.

"We won the South Asian Under-16 title in Nepal in 2011 and will defend it later this month."

British-born Pakistan international defender Zesh Rehman played for the Cottagers for several seasons, and Haider said there was more talent waiting to be unearthed.

"If Khan can send his scouts to Pakistan who can have a look at our talent and provide them with a facility at Fulham it would be a great help and the boys are excited at the prospect," said Haider.

Football is particularly popular in Pakistan's restive southwestern province of Baluchistan, but poverty and poor security mean few young players get a chance.

Khan, who has US citizenship and who already owns the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, is ranked 179th in the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans, with an estimated worth of $2.5 billion. He made his fortune as a car parts manufacturer.

Haider said the fact Khan had taken over such a high-profile club would boost the game in Pakistan.

"It is very exciting for the football fraternity here that a Pakistani now owns top EPL club Fulham and we wish that under his ownership Fulham becomes a successful team," Haider said.
