Biggest U-Turn Of The Year

Chancellor George Osborne back on track to claim the mantle of Prime Minister David Cameron as he dropped his controversial tax credit cuts and slimming police budgets. Osborne said the nation’s finances were in better shape than expected and he could abandon the controversial plans ‘altogether’. The chancellor vowed to ‘deliver economic and national security’ as he set out plans to slash spending by £20billion to get Britain back into the black by 2020. The Chancellor using a Commons Statement to announce the cuts, promised billions extra for the NHS, defence and foreign aid. But in the wake of the Paris terror attacks he revealed he would not go ahead with any cuts to police budgets in England and Wales. The NHS, defence, foreign aid and housing are the big winners, but transport, justice and the environment will bear the brunt, with families braced for big hikes in council tax bills to plug the gap caused by smaller grants from Whitehall. Mr Osborne told the Commons that he had ‘listened to the concerns’ and understood them. ‘To secure our economic security and national security provide the foundations for every thing we want built for Britain,” said Osborne. “So we leave to the next generations a stronger economy than the one we inherited.’” ‘And because I’ve been able to announce today an improvement in the public finances, the simplest thing to do is not to phase these changes in, but to avoid them altogether,’ he added. The Chancellor said higher than predicted tax receipts and lower interest rates meant the Office for Budget Responsibility estimated that public finances would be £27billion better off over the course of the Parliament than it forecast at the time of the post-election Budget in July.

Winter Driving Advice from Mr. Compensator As Britain faces predictions of the 'coldest winter in 50 years', Mr. Compensator brings you essential driving tips and advice to help you cope with the tricky conditions this year. Driving in the winter is very different than in other times of the year. Extreme weather conditions and longer periods of darkness makes driving more hazardous. This means drivers need to adapt the way they drive. Mr. Compensator recommends the following tips to help you cope better with the various winter weather hazards this year: 1. Before you drive • Check and clean your lights and wipers. • Clean your windscreen, windows and mirrors. • Check your cars anti-freeze level. • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination. • Make sure you have more than enough fuel. 2. Check your tyres

We asked Omar from Mr. Compensator how they can help drivers this winter. “Winter can be a tricky time for drivers. It's an essential period where people need their cars as they're visiting friends and family over the holidays. That's why our replacement car service can help them get back on the road in the event of an accident. We strive to deliver our replacement cars within 2 hours to a location of your choice. And in certain circumstances, we can also offer a £2000 referral fee for allowing us to manage your accident claim.”

Check your tyre tread depths and make sure you have at least 3mm of tread on them. Keep your distance It can take as much as ten times as long to stop on an icy road as it does on a dry one. A good rule of thumb is that you should be around 10 seconds behind the car in front of you if the road is icy. That way, if that car has to stop suddenly you will have time to stop or take avoiding action.

Mr. Compensator recently made the move to their new office at 259 Abbeydale Road. Why did the company feel the need to move? Rubal from Mr. Compensator mentions the need to accommodate their growing customer base.

Tens Of Thousands Of People Enjoy Sheffield’s Christmas Light Switch On Around 35,000 people packed into Sheffield city centre on Sunday 22 November to watch champion fundraiser John Burkhill flick the switch on this year’s Christmas lights. Mr Burkhill took to the Peace Gardens stage to turn the lights on with pop band Stooshe; singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan; the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain; stars of this year’s Sheffield Theatres pantomime including Damian Williams and CBeebies’ Alex Winters; presenters from Heart and Father Christmas. After the crowd – watching in the Peace Gardens and also on a giant screen in Pinstone Street – counted down to zero, the switch was flicked and the city centre was bathed in twinkling light. Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council, said: “The big switch-on is always a fantastic event for families, and this year was no exception. “From the live nativity scene on the Moor through to the fairy

grotto in the Winter Garden and vintage emergency vehicles in Barkers Pool, there really was something for everybody. “Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to show some festive spirit. And please continue to enjoy the Christmas markets along Fargate, along with all that the city centre has to offer, in the run-up to 25 December.” Now that the lights have been switched on, the festive feeling will continue right up until Christmas with the Christmas markets and Sleigh Bar on Fargate. As well as traders from across the UK and Europe selling a variety of gifts, jewellery, crafts, the Christmas market includes a huge range of refreshment stalls selling hot food and drinks. Housed in traditional wooden huts, the Christmas market runs from 10am to 6pm daily, and will also be open for late-night shopping until 8pm each Wednesday in December.

Cameron Urged To Use Term Daesh When Referring To ISIL David Cameron has warned the Government "might lose the public" if it refers to the Islamic State terror group as Daesh. The Prime Minister told MPs he is "listening very carefully" to the arguments in favour of using the Arabic acronym, amid fears Islamophobia is increasing in the United Kingdom. Mr Cameron often refers to so-called Islamic State as Isil. Conservative MP Rehman Chishti said the deliberate linking of Islam with the terror group has resulted in growing prejudice toward Muslims. Speaking in the Commons, the MP for Gillingham and Rainham told Mr Cameron: "In relation to defeating this evil organisation's ideology, appeal and self-proclaimed legitimacy, our key ally France uses the term Daesh - the French media now follow."

Mr Chishti noted a UN resolution mentions Daesh, adding: "As does the EU statement, as does the entire Arab League, as do 170 Members of Parliament, which will help address the rise in Islamophobia in this country which I know you don't want but which is happening by deliberately linking Islam with this terrorist organisation. "They have chosen to call themselves an Islamic State and a caliphate for a reason, and we should not do that." Mr Cameron replied: "You are fighting this very strong campaign and I think convincing increasing numbers of people. "My only concern is whether we might lose the public by changing the name. But I'm listening very carefully to the arguments you're making."

Majority Of British Public Favour Leaving EU More than half of Britons now want to leave the European Union, according to an opinion poll carried out after the Paris attacks for the Independent newspaper. The ORB survey of 2,000 people showed 52 percent of British voters wanted to leave while 48 percent wanted to stay. In similar polls in June, July and September, a majority had wanted to stay in the EU. Last month, British Prime Minister David Cameron launched his attempt to reform the 28-member bloc ahead of a referendum on whether Britain should remain an EU member, a vote which he has

promised will take place by the end of 2017. A British divorce would shake the bloc to its core, ripping away its second largest economy and one of its top two military powers. Pro-Europeans warn an exit from the EU would hurt Britain's economy and could trigger the break-up of the United Kingdom by prompting another Scottish independence vote. Other polls have shown British support for staying in the European Union fell this year as an influx of migrants into Europe raised concerns about membership.

Anti-Muslim Crime Soars In Britain After Paris Attacks Anti-Muslim hate crimes rose 300 percent in Britain in the week following the coordinated attacks in Paris. A "vast and overwhelming majority" of the 115 attacks were against Muslim women and girls aged between 14 and 45 who were wearing traditional Islamic dress, according to the findings reported in The Independent newspaper. The perpetrators were mainly white males aged between 15 and 35, according to the report, which noted that the true numbers of attacks were likely much larger than those reported. The figures come from a report to a government working group on anti-Muslim hate compiled by Tell Mama, a helpline that records incidents of physical and verbal attacks on mosques and Muslims. A large number of the attacks occurred in public places such as buses and trains. Many of the victims have suggested that no one came to their assistance or even consoled them, meaning that they felt victimised, embarrassed, alone and angry about what had taken place against them. Sixteen of the victims even men-

tioned that they would be fearful of going out in the future and that the experiences had affected their confidence. Islamophobic and anti-Semitic incidents had already risen sharply before the attacks in Paris, by 70.7 percent and 93.4 percent respectively in the year to July 2015 compared to the previous 12-month period, according to police figures. In all, 816 Islamophobic incidents were recorded in Greater London between July 2014 and July 2015, compared to 478 in the previous period. The same period saw 499 anti-Semitic incidents, a rise from 258 the previous year. The police did not give a breakdown on whether the recorded attacks were physical or verbal assaults, but said there were a number of factors leading to the rise including a greater willingness of victims to report such incidents and better police recording. Britain has 2.7 million Muslim residents and a Jewish population of 263,000, according to the 2011 census.

More Young People ‘Living In Poverty Than Those Over 65’ More young people are living in poverty than those aged over 65 as a lack of well-paid jobs and affordable homes is making it harder to build a secure future, according to a new report. A study for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation also found that young people were four times more likely to be unemployed than the working age population as a whole. The next generation is facing worse life chances than their parents, the report concluded. The foundation's annual state-of-the-nation report found that 400,000 more young people aged between 16 and 24 were living in poverty than a decade ago. 13 million people were living in poverty after housing costs - the same number as a decade ago. The report shows fundamental shifts in the causes of poverty and which groups are at greatest risk. It highlights that a lack of wellpaid jobs, genuinely affordable homes and opportunities to get on at work or in education is making it harder for people to build a secure future. Finding a job is not a reliable route out of poverty, as half of those below the poverty line live in a household with at least one adult in work, the study found. The next generation is being condemned to

CITY LITTER BUGS GIVEN FINES TOTALLING £11,000 A total of 24 people who failed to pay a £75 fixed penalty notice for littering have been brought before the courts last month. Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Protection Service has prosecuted 24 people for dropping litter at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. Each was ordered to pay a financial penalty of £488.79. A Council spokesman said: “The City Council encourages everyone to use the litter bins provided. Our Environmental Protection Officers will approach anyone they see dropping litter. The person will usually be offered the opportunity to pay a Fixed Penalty of £75. If the Fixed Penalty is not paid, then the matter will go to court.” They were all fined £200, with costs awarded

drivers have said they are being issued dozens of fines in their daily work and some had even had bailiffs turn up on their doorsteps to demand payment. The council said there had been an IT problem, differences in the way fines were generated and human error but said the last problem had been resolved a month ago and ‘we are as confident as we can be that the system is working well.’ A Sheffield Council spokesman said: “We have identified some additional vehicles that were not captured on the system and we are working to bring this up to date. “We ask those who have received an erroneous penalty charge notice to contact us as soon as possible so that we can cancel it and make sure they are added to the system to prevent further fines being generated. We would like to reassure people that this issue will soon be resolved and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

WAGE BOOST FOR LOW PAID WORKERS

Blunder In Bus Lane Fines Exempt drivers are still wrongly receiving bus lane fines from Sheffield Council. Figures show that 4,679 bus lane charges were issued to exempt vehicles by the council in the last year. The £60 charges are usually not applied to taxis, bicycles, minibuses or emergency services vehicles and the council holds a list of licenced taxis which are exempt, but these fines were often repeatedly to the same vehicles. The council have previously said they have rectified the situation but some taxi

a worse set of circumstances in which to live, work and raise a family. This year's report reveals that a large proportion of young people are being locked out of the opportunities they need to build a secure future - a secure home, a job that pays the bills and the chance to get on in life. The welcome fall in the number of pensioners living in poverty, thanks partly to direct action from the Government, shows that this is a problem which can be solved. The same commitment needs to be seen to tackling the drivers of poverty among younger people, including low pay, unaffordable housing and difficulties entering into and progressing at work. A Government spokesman said: "The truth is, the percentage of people in the UK in relative poverty is at its lowest since the mid 80s. Youth unemployment is at its lowest level since early 2006 and we know that work is the best route out of poverty. "That's why the Government is increasing work incentives by committing to three million more apprenticeships, extending free childcare, boosting earnings through a new national living wage and ensuring people keep more of what they earn by increasing the personal allowance."

Thousands of Sheffield workers are now being paid above the national living wage with city leaders calling for more businesses to take up the deal. This comes as Sheffield City Council confirms it will be paying a minimum of £8.25 per hour to all of its workers from April. This is £1.05 more than was set by Government as a new minimum wage, announced by George Osborne earlier this year. Sheffield City Council was one of the first in the country to adopt a living wage two years ago for all its employees – setting the bar for other local industries to follow. Already many of the

council’s partners have followed suit and also introduced the living wage, but more can still be done, say leaders. As part of National Living Wage Week they are now urging all city businesses to get on board. Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Resources at Sheffield City Council, said: “Life below the living wage is hard and is a life of wants and worries for many workers and their families. “That is why we adopted a living wage for our staff and encourage our contractors to pay it, as well as promoting the living wage to all businesses in Sheffield. What this means is more people cooking our children’s meals in schools, maintaining the city’s streets and roads and repairing council homes are paid a fair wage. “We have demonstrated our commitment and support to our own lower paid workers. I know employers and businesses are operating in difficult circumstances but I would urge others to do the same.” Living Wage Foundation announced the new UK living wage rate of £8.25 per hour outside London to come into effect from April 2016.

3.5m UK Adults Living With Diabetes After Cases Surge 65% Since 2005 The number of adults with diabetes has risen more than 65% since 2005, figures show. Almost 3.5 million people in the UK are now living with diabetes, according to a analysis of GP data for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). In the last year alone, there has been a 3.5% rise in cases, while hundreds of thousands more people are undiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. The BHF is highlighting the issue because of the strong link between diabetes and heart attacks. Having diabetes doubles a person's risk of a heart attack. Patient data for 2014/15 shows almost 3.5 million people are now diagnosed with diabetes. In the previous year, the figure was 3.3 million and two million in 2004/05.

Nether Edge Councillors ‘We are here to help’ Nether Edge Councillors Monthly Surgery: To mark World Diabetes Day, the charity is announced more than £3 million of funding for research into the link between heart disease and diabetes, plus new treatments for the condition. Unemployment falls by 102,000 Unemployment has fallen by more than 100,000 to its lowest level in more than seven years. The jobless total dropped in the latest quarter to 1.75 million - 210,000 down on a year ago. It means a record 31.2 million people are in employment, 419,000 more than a year ago. Ministers welcomed the figures but unions said they disguised a bleak picture for many threatened by tax credit cuts and the loss of secure, better paid jobs. The jobless figure fall of 102,000 means the

employment rate has reached 73.7%, the highest since comparable records began in 1971. Employment minister Priti Patel said: “It is clear that this government is transforming lives for the better and creating the higher wage, lower welfare society that British people want to see.” But analysts pointed to the slowdown in pay rises - up by 2.5% in the year to September, down 0.3% on the previous month - as a sign that “the rebound enjoyed during much of 2015 has eased”.

‘Thousands Have Died’ While Waiting For Organ Transplant More than 6,000 people have died while waiting for an organ transplant in the last decade, the NHS revealed as it launched a campaign to boost the number of UK residents on the organ donor register. According to new NHS figures, nearly 49,000 people have waited for an organ transplant during that period and there are about 7,000 currently on the list. Of those, almost one third have been waiting for more than two years and about 500 have been waiting for longer than five years. Statistically, more than one in 10 people on the waiting list will die before they get the transplant they need. The figures show the largest waiting list as of October was for kidneys - with 5,400 patients - followed by

livers, lungs and hearts. Information on the organ donor register can be found at organdonation.nhs.uk or by calling 0300 123 23 23.

Immigration At Record High Immigration to Britain has reached a record high as soaring numbers of people flock to the country looking for work. Estimated net migration was 336,000 in the year to June – a jump of 82,000, or a third, compared with the previous 12 months, according to the Office for National Statistics. The surge in arrivals is being driven by a record influx of people arriving for jobs, including a dramatic rise in the numbers of Romanians and Bulgarians coming to Britain. Campaigners called the figures disappointing and said the only answer was for Britain to close its borders by leaving the European Union. Net migration - the difference between the

number of people arriving and leaving - has now been at an unprecedented level for two consecutive quarters. It is 16,000 higher than the previous peak recorded in the year ending June 2005, when enlargement of the European Union saw a surge in arrivals. The findings sparked fresh questions about the government’s aim of reducing the figure to below 100,000. “We remain committed to reforms across the whole of government to deliver the controlled migration system which is in the best interests of our country” Immigration minister James Brokenshire.

Earnings Gap Closing But Women ‘Paid £9,000 Less Than Men’ Women’s pay has increased at twice the rate of men’s over the past five years but they still earn on average £9,000 less, new data suggests. Women’s earnings increased by 8% between 2009 and 2014, compared to 4% for men, according to Halifax. However, the average salary for a man in full time employment was £37,028, in 2014 - the latest year data is available. That is almost a third (32%) higher than the £27,991 paid to female full-time staff. Despite the economic outlook brightening, there are lots of financial pressures facing fami-

In terms of pay, women have fared better than men since the economic recovery began. Whilst this has helped to reduce the economic and financial gap between the genders, there is still a substantial difference in average salaries when in full time employment.

Europe's migration commissioner has said an agreement to deport undocumented migrants to Pakistan will be restored, after Islamabad announced it had suspended the deal because of its "blatant misuse". The 2010 agreement aimed to facilitate the return of Pakistani illegal immigrants and other nationals who had transited through Pakistan before arriving in the European Union. Earlier last month, Islamabad suspended the agreement with EU countries except Britain, denouncing misuse including the lack of "proper

verification" of their nationality. European and Pakistani officials are meeting to discuss the details of the procedure, it said. Avramopoulos, EU migration commissioner, said Pakistan and the European Union will strengthen cooperation against smuggling networks. "It is the moment to fight smugglers. There are powerful networks that exploit those desperate people. We're going to track down and eradicate these networks," he said. Stressing the distinction between economic migrants and refugees, he said victims of smugglers and those who try to migrate illegally "must know that they will not be given any permit" allowing them to stay. Pakistan, the sixth most populous country in the world, is one of the top five countries of origin for illegal migration to Europe, according to figures from the European statistical institute Eurostat. Around 630,000 people have illegally entered the European Union this year, more than half of them landing in Greece, and the bloc has struggled to formulate a strategy to deal with the crisis.

The Regulation of UK Madrassas Madrassas will face new regulations under government plans published last month. And many Muslim parents, while not publicly say, will welcome the proposals. Under the plans, any outof-school setting providing intensive education would be required to register and be open to inspection. Consultations on the plans is set to run until 11 January which aims to gather more information on the number and variety of out-of-school settings. The majority of Muslim children attend their local mosque at least two hours a day to learn Arabic and the Quran. Whilst some mosques have now modernised, many have stuck to specific teaching methods. There are many good examples of madrassas being taken over by English speaking, British born Muslims who want to ensure their children get a good education. Many are run as efficiently, if not more efficiently than private schools. They have staff sometimes working with limited resources working hard to ensure teaching is of a high standard and parents are kept well informed of their child’s development. But this is not the case in a fair share of Madrassas. Many Muslims growing-up in the eighties and nineties will be familiar with settings where they were beaten by non-English speaking teachers who also took on the role of Imams. Muslim parents may not publicly say they want the government to be making random inspections and ensuring madrassas were registered properly. But privately there is a huge concern about how madrassas are run. Some Muslims may say this is a new level of intrusion into the Muslim community and the government is using continuing 'terror threats' as an

excuse to spy on Madrassas and Mosques. But if you have a child in a Madrassa would you not want the best for him or her in terms of safety? Under new plans corporal punishment would be banned but it is the issue of "promoting extreme views" or anything that is deemed incompatible with fundamental British values that may cause issues. In some mosques new English speaking teachers are well versed in espousing views that may well be deemed ‘extreme. For example children are told they are not to celebrate Christmas or for that matter that fireworks are ‘haram’. Other children are told that habits of other religious sects are to be shunned. In the current political climate certain things may be seen as ‘radical’. Who is say what is extreme and what isn’t? Mosques run by specific schools of thought are staffed by teachers who will ensure their children are taught Islamic ideals that they themselves learnt. In many cases accountability does not lie with the madrassa committees any longer. Many madrassas find it difficult to find qualified teachers and may settle for unqualified staff who lack training. The majority of Madrassa teachers do the job to help their local mosque and are paid very little. The bigger mosques attract the better teachers but the smaller mosques may find they are at the mercy of the teachers and the imam. Imams and religious leaders are able to wield more influence on how their Madrassas are run. Parents are not able to challenge that authority so any new regulations will privately be welcomed.

NHS And Poverty Biggest Concerns, According To Survey By Local MP

Two-thirds of people have said the NHS is one of their biggest concerns, according to a new survey of over 900 people in Sheffield. When asked which issues Paul Blomfield MP should prioritise in Parliament, 66% chose the NHS, over half selected poverty and inequality and more than a third said education. At a local level, concerns were more evenly split, but the biggest issue was poverty at 42%, jobs at 37% and public transport at 35%. When it came to the upcoming vote on whether to remain in the EU, people were overwhelmingly in favour of staying, with 48% strongly for and 18% mildly for. Only 8% said they were strongly against staying in the EU, whilst less than 4% were mildly against. Just over one-in-five were undecided. Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central, sent the survey to every household in the constituency for

his annual community consultation, the Big Conversation. The survey was also online and filled in by hundreds of people who attended Big Conversation events in schools, colleges, churches, cafes, community centres and both universities. Paul Blomfield said: “The Big Conversation is all about listening to people’s concerns and then me raising them in Parliament. “Sadly it’s no surprise that so many people raised worries about the NHS, because they know first-hand how the government has created an overstretched and underfunded NHS, with overworked and demoralised staff. This week’s announcement by the Chancellor of an extra £3.8 billion next year needs to be seen against his demands for the NHS to make £22 billion of savings, and his withdrawal of grants for student nurses is bound to hit recruitment.” “It’s also striking how many people view poverty as one of the most important issues, both nationally and at a local level. Under the previous Coalition government and now the Tory-majority government people on low to middle incomes have suffered badly under public service cuts and tax rises, but the richest have enjoyed tax cuts and other perks. “I’ll be taking these concerns to Parliament and will also be raising other worries about education, jobs, public transport and welfare cuts – some of the other big concerns that came out of the Big Conversation.”

David Cameron: Commonwealth Must Fight Corruption And Extremism Commonwealth countries must lead the fight against extremism, corruption and climate change, David Cameron has said. Speaking after he co-chaired a meeting of 10 leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, the PM said agreements had been made to counter online extremist "propaganda". Corruption was a "cancer at the heart of so many problems we face", he added. Mr Cameron - who had attended a meeting with the leaders of Botswana, Canada, Australia, Ghana, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, and Malta - urged Commonwealth countries to lead the fight against corruption. "Corruption

wrecks economies, it prevents development, it corrodes our societies", Mr Cameron said. "It can even foment terrorism as people give up hope in good and honest government." He said there was "so much more" to be done, saying the UK will host a summit in London in May to discuss proposals. The prime minister said agreements had also been made to do more to tackle extremist material online and to "share expertise and practical prevention". He has said a Commonwealth unit to target the "scourge" of extremism will be established, pledging £5m to help fund the unit.

Well-Cooked Meat May Cause Kidney Cancer Well-cooked meat could be a cause of kidney cancer, doctors in the US have discovered. Experts from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center made the finding while analysing the diets of about 1,400 people, half of whom suffered from renal cell carcinoma. According to the researchers, cooking meat at high temperatures or over open flames can increase the quantity of harmful chemicals it contains. People with certain genetic variants are more susceptible to the harmful effects of the cancercausing substances. The new report was consistent with the estab-

lished theory that eating a lot of meat can contribute to kidney cancer. Renal cell carcinoma occurs more frequently in higher income countries than in less developed parts of the world, so it seems probable that it is caused in part by a Western lifestyle. “Obesity is one risk factor, but some recent studies have also implicated high levels of meat consumption. This new report is consistent with that hypothesis. However, as with most cancers, it seems likely that an individual’s risk of developing renal cell carcinoma is shaped by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Experts say more research needed to be done on a larger scale to establish the validity of the link.

THE GRAND DEBATE - HOUSING Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son As you aware I have been talking about the need homes for a number of years. It is not until recently that this debate has become a vogue subject being talked about by politicians, journalists, strategic thinkers and more. Even as I was driving in this morning thinking about writing this article the subject was being discussed on the radio. There is no doubt that we need to build more homes the question is where and how many and of what tenure. The lack of house building was quite prominent in the last few decades which has left us in the position of playing "catch up", whether we do reach a time when we have enough new homes remains the question. In my humble opinion I can’t see a time when we will have more supply than demand. Lets now look at the various headlines surrounding this debate: The Rental Sector One of the key discussions has been around the rental sector whether that is social housing or private rented we will certainly see a dramatic rise in this tenure over the next decade. The phrase "Rent Generation" has been coined in reference to a increase in this sector, being a tenure of choice for many people. Our obsession with owning our own home has been all consuming, but we are a nation which may be taking its lead from mainland Europe changing tenure aspirations to renting. In the last few years we have seen large companies coming into this market building good quality homes for long term rental. I was recently at a conference in Manchester where a representative of one such developer was talking about their project in Salford and their aspirations to build more rental homes across the country with financial backing from overseas. It is a yield based model over a long term that some of these companies are developing.

10 YEARS OF COMMUNITY RADIO Community radio, which offers thousands of volunteers the chance to get involved in broadcasting across the UK, is now ten years old. The last decade has seen the number of community radio stations increase from just a handful to more than 230 stations, each reflecting the local needs and interests of its audience. Community radio is a not-for-profit sector, largely run by an army of 20,000 dedicated volunteers, who collectively work for around 2.5 million hours1 every year to bring original programming and locally-made content to listeners around the country. Stations usually broadcast to everyone in a geographical area, but around a third tailor their output to serve a particular community– such as older people, or an ethnic or religious group. Community radio stations typically cover a 5km radius, broadcasting on average 93 hours a week of original output. Many reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests in their region. Stations also work within their community to offer a range of benefits such as training opportunities, work experience, local news and information resources. Community Radio stations have deep-rooted connections in their communities. Local people run these stations, producing content to inform and entertain their local community and offering real benefits like radio training. Ofcom launched the first phase of community radio licensing back in September 2004 and received 200 applications for the first licences. The first station to launch after this was The Eye in Melton Mowbray, which was recently honoured for its long-standing contribution to its local community.

2,000 Faith Schools Pupils Receive ‘Inadequate And Inappropriate’ Education Nine out of a group of 22 faith schools inspected by Ofsted have been found to be of an “inadequate” standard. Only five were judged to be providing a good or better standard of education, meaning more than 2,000 pupils are being educated in 17 schools where the education was judged not to be good enough. Only one school - Manchester Islamic High School for Girls - was deemed “outstanding”. Some 12 schools lacked adequate leadership and management, inspectors have concluded. Prime minister David Cameron used his speech to the Tory party conference to again raise his concerns about some faith schools. “Seven hundred children attend schools where inspectors considered that pupils were not being adequately prepared for life in modern Britain” said Sir Michael Wilshaw, head of Ofsted. At one school, Al-Ameen Primary in Birmingham, inspectors

found students were exposed to “inappropriate literature about extremist, sexist or partisan views”. Four schools failed to promote fundamental British values, which inspectors said “was of serious concern”. Students at the school, as well as two others - Cornerstone School, a school of a Christian character in Epsom, and Leicester Islamic Academy - were not taught to understand different faiths, cultures and beliefs. At a meeting at Darul Uloom Islamic High School in Birmingham, the only female governor sat out of sight of the male governors in an adjacent room and could only communicate to her peers through a doorway. “All schools must promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for different faiths and beliefs” Department for Education statement.

Cybercrime Costing 12 Million British People £1.6bn A Year More than 12 million British people have experienced cybercrime in the past year, research suggests. The Norton Cybersecurity Insights Report shows that over the last year, UK consumers lost more than one working day (nine hours) dealing with the fallout from online crime and nearly £134 per person - totalling an estimated £1.6bn across the nation. The study of more than 1,000 consumers in the UK showed that they see foreign countries and governments as the major culprits of online crime, with UK consumers even

more likely than the global average to blame them. Findings demonstrate that people’s trust in online activity has been rattled, yet there still is not widespread adoption of simple protection measures that people should take to safeguard their information online. Among those who experienced cybercrime in the past year, more than one in 10 UK victims indicated their identity was stolen. One in seven UK victims had their financial information stolen as a result of shopping online.

Pakistan Female Fighter Pilot Dies In Jet Crash

One of Pakistan's few female fighter jet pilots was killed in a training crash recently, the air force said in a statement, adding that she was the first of its women pilots to "embrace martyrdom". Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar and Squadron Leader Saqib Abbasi were flying a training mission on an FT-7PG aircraft and encountered a "serious in-flight emergency" during the final stages, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) said in a statement. "Flying Officer Marium embraced martyrdom and became the first lady pilot from PAF to attain this

great honour," it said. The crash took place in Kundian, Mianwali district, about 175 kilometres (109 miles) southwest of Islamabad. The male officer, Abbasi, sustained minor injuries, the air force added. "Both the pilots handled the serious emergency with professionalism and courage and tried to save the ill-fated aircraft till the very last minute," the statement said. In order to ensure the safety of civilians on the ground, they were forced to eject and the aircraft crashed, the PAF said. Pakistan is a highly traditional, patriarchal society where opportunities for women are limited. But in 2006 seven women broke into one of the country's most exclusive male clubs to graduate as fighter pilots -- perhaps the most prestigious job in the powerful military and for six decades closed to them. Flying Officer Mukhtiar 23, was one of a small number of women to work as fighter pilots in Pakistan, and the first to die on operational service. Marium Mukhtiar was among about 20 female fighter pilots in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), which only began inducting women in combat roles in 2006.

Reshma the Nightingale of the desert Reshma is a legend in every sense of the word, she was a renowned folk singer of Pakistan and a national treasure, who was also very popular in India. She died on 3 November 2013 in Lahore, Pakistan, after suffering from throat cancer for several years. Reshma was born in village of Loha, Tehsil Ratangarh district Churu near Bikaner, Rajasthan to a Banjara (Gypsy) family around 1947. Her father Haji Mamad Mushtaq was a camel and horse trader from Malashi. She belonged to a tribe which had converted to Islam. Her tribe migrated to Karachi shortly after the Partition of India, when she was just one month old. She did not attend school and spent much of her childhood singing at the mazars (shrines) of the mystic saints of Sindh. When she was twelve years old, she was spotted singing at Shahbaaz Qalandar’s shrine by a television and radio producer, who arranged for her to make a recording of “Laal Meri” on Pakistan radio. She became an instant hit and since that day, Reshma has been one of the most popular folk singers of Pakistan, appearing on television in the 1960s, recording songs for both the Pakistani and Indian film industry, and performing at home and abroad. Some of her famous songs are “Dama Dam Mast Kalandar”, “Hai O Rabba nahion lagda dil mera”, “Sun charkhe di mithi mithi cook mahiya meinu yaad aunda”, “Wey main chori chori”, and “Ankhiyan no rehen de ankhyan de kol kol”. The last was used by Raj Kapoor in Bobby, “Ankhyon ko rehne de ankhyon ke aas pass”, sung by Lata. Her fame had crossed the border, thanks to piracy. She was able to perform live in India much later, during the 1980s when India and Pakistan allowed exchange of artists. Subhash Ghai used her voice in the film Hero, which featured one of her most famous songs, “Lambi Judai”. In October 2002, Reshma performed at the Bru-

60 years of PIA Before the independence of Pakistan, Jinnah collaborated with Mr. M.A Ispahani who was a leading industrialist of that time to set up an international airline because it was crucial for the two wings of Pakistan – East and the West to have a means of transportation. An airline by the name of Orient Airways was established on 23rdOctober, 1946. As time progressed, PIA officially came into being on January 10, 1955 and the company did increasingly well, year after year. 1955 marked the inauguration of the fledgling airline's first scheduled international service - to the glittering, glitzy capital city of London, via Cairo and Rome. Initially, there was much criticism, as the public could not comprehend or justify the

www.ilmnews.com

need to operate an international route when, in their opinion, other projects vital for a developing country should have been given a higher priority. However, PIA's focus was, to serve the Pakistani community at large. The provision of transportation to expatriates has remained one of the foremost priorities of the international airline. PIA gradually earned substantial foreign exchange through international services, which it invested in the purchase of aircraft and spare parts, as fleet expansion was a necessity for the airline. Today PIA has 37 airplanes as compared to just 18 two and a half years ago. PIA’s management is following a plan under which this number would reach 40 by the end of the current year and taken to 50 by the end of 2016. But today we also see a once celebrated airline, rocked in controversy at every turn. Flight delays, leaving checked in passengers behind, corruption within its realms, misuse of service by public servants but to name a few. The public has lost faith in the running of this once proud institution but travellers still use the service for convenience. Revenue is zilch while losses keep escalating. We are still waiting for its glorious past to be restored 60 years on.

nei Gallery in London to a packed hall of Pakistani expatriates, where her daughter Khadija and son Umayr also performed. In 2004, she recorded “Ashkan Di Gali Vich Mukaam De Gaya”, which was used in the Bollywood film Woh Tera Naam Tha, and was also a hit record in India. In January 2006, she was one of the passengers on the inaugural Lahore-Amritsar bus, the first such service linking both parts of the Punjab since 1947. The bus had 26 passengers in total of whom 15 were Pakistani officials, and Reshma had booked seven seats for herself and her family. Reshma once said in an interview, "I was born in a family of saudagars in Rajasthan in a small settlement called Bikaner. I don't know the year I was born but I was told that I was brought to Pakistan when I was a few months old in 1947. My family would take camels from Bikaner and sell them in other areas, and bring back goats and cows from elsewhere to sell at home. I belong to a huge clan of gypsies. We were forever travelling around. Though a lot of us have now settled and taken up permanent residences in Lahore and Karachi, whenever we feel restless we pack our bags and move on." Reshma was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1980s. After years of treatment, her health deteriorated to such an extent that she was hospitalised in April 2013. She fell into a coma in October 2013 and died on 3 November 2013 in a Lahore hospital. She was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz awarded by the President of Pakistan for her services to the nation. Indeed she was the most Shining star of Pakistan but she spent all of her life in simplicity and keeping intact the family values that our nation is proud of. She is still in the hearts and memories of millions of her fans.

Pakistan Ready For Dialogue With India Without Preconditions: Nawaz Sharif Prime Minister Pakistan Nawaz Sharif joined leaders on 27th November, from 53 countries to attend the opening ceremony of the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Maltese capital. Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his wife Michelle Muscat received Prime Minister Sharif and Begum Kalsoom Nawaz on their arrival at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz accompanied the prime minister. Britain's Queen Elizabeth II - being the Head of the Commonwealth - opened the biennial meeting being held with the theme “Adding Global Value”. Nawaz Sharif along with other heads of government had an official photograph with the Queen. Later, the prime minister attended the reception hosted by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma for the visiting dignitaries. British Prime Minister David Cameron, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, French President Francois Hollande and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were among those who attended the event. The Commonwealth meeting is held every two years in a member country. Malta is the only country to host the Heads of Government Meeting for the second time in a decade. In his address at the special session of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the Prime Minister said climate change had emerged as a major threat to lives across the world and added that Pakistan was highly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change like glacial melts, recurrent floods, and sea-level rise. He said Pakistan itself being victim of terrorism could feel the pain of French people. Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan has sacrificed over fifty thousand lives in the war against terror. He mentioned that the government had formulated the National Action Plan against terrorism as part of a comprehensive strategy to deal with this scourge. He said Pakistan wants peaceful ties with all its neighbours. He appreciated the continued support by Britain for the uplift of Pakistan’s social sectors, particularly education and mentioned in particular the assistance provided by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif stated that for sustainable peace, Pakistan is ready for dialogue with India without preconditions. Mr Sharif said Pakistan meant to maintain friendly relations with all its neighbours, including India and Afghanistan.Mr Cameron welcomed the signs of growth in Pakistan’s economy in result of its GSP Plus trade agreement with the European Union. Cameron lauded Pakistan’s efforts in eradication of militancy and extremism. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who is hosting the summit, said of its counter-radicalisation talks: “I don’t expect a solution; I expect more understanding”.

2015 Likely To Be Hottest Year On Record This year is very likely to have been the hottest on record worldwide, the World Meteorological Organisation has said. Manmade global warming and a strong El Nino phenomenon in the Pacific, which pushes up temperatures, mean 2015 has had the hottest January to October on record, with temperatures 1C above pre-industrial levels, preliminary estimates show. The years 2011 to 2015 have been the warmest five-year period on record thanks to extreme events such as heatwaves influenced by climate change, the UN’s weather, water and climate body said. “The state of the global climate in 2015 will make history for a number of reasons,” said WMO secretary-general Michel Jarraud. "This is all bad news for the planet, with ocean surface temperatures at the highest level since measurements began. It is probable that the 1C threshold will be crossed.” The WMO analysis, based on three independent datasets including one from the Met Office and University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, is released ahead of crucial climate talks in Paris to secure a new deal to curb rising temperatures. It warned that inaction over climate change could see temperatures rise by 6C or more. But decisions taken at the summit of world leaders in Paris could keep global temperature rises within 2C (3.6F) over pre-industrial times, a target set down in 2010 to try to prevent dangerous climate change. The fingerprint of a warming planet is becoming clearer in nearly every corner of the world

‘Ineffective’ Flu Jab Blamed For Biggest Surge In Winter Deaths For 40 Years

Smoking Still A Main Cause Of Accidental Fires

A surge in the number of deaths in winter is being blamed on an ineffective flu jab. Excess winter deaths in England and Wales reached 43,900 last year, the highest number since 1999. That was a rise of 151% on the previous winter and the biggest annual jump in more than 40 years, figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed. While the cold temperature is a factor, most of last winter was warmer than average. A major cause behind the rise was the flu virus, with estimates showing that the flu vaccine was not as effective this winter compared to previous years. Many countries with colder climates than ours have far better records on cold-related deaths, showing we should be doing much better than we currently are. The term “excess” means the extra number of people who died over the winter period, defined as between December and March compared with those who died during the rest of the year. Most of those who died in 2014/15 were aged 75 or over, with underlying respiratory illness accounting for more than a third of the deaths. As in other years, more women died during the period than men, with female deaths rising from 10,250 in 2013/14 to 25,500 in 2014/15 compared with a rise from 7,210 to 18,400 for men. In part, this is because there are more older women than older men in the population.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is highlighting the dangers of smoking, after recent figures show these are still a main cause of accidental dwelling fires. Smoking related fires have remained at a similar level for the past few years. While accidental house fires are reducing, fires caused from cigarettes or other smoking materials still amount to around 60 incidents per year, the same as six years ago.

Britain To Hire 1,900 Additional Spies To Counter IS Threat The Government is to intensify the fight against the threat posed by Islamist militants by recruiting 1,900 intelligence staff and providing training for countries to step-up security at airports. David Cameron made the announcement at the G20 summit in Turkey declaring Britain faced a “generational struggle” against IS which he said intended to “destroy us and our values”, following attacks by militants in Paris that left 132 people dead. The Prime Minister said: “I am determined to prioritise the resources we need to combat the terrorist threat because protecting the British people is my number one duty as Prime Minister.” “We have our differences with the Russians, not least because they’ve done so much to degrade the non-ISIL opposition to Assad, people who could be part of the future of Syria”. GCHQ has been instrumental in tracking IS members and decrypting messages and web chatter concerning key figures in the network. It is thought British spies played a key role in identifying where chief executioner Jihadi John could be found before he was eliminated by drone strike. Spooks working at GCHQ sift through thousands of messages, internet traffic, data and intercepts every day using specific searches, which can relate to trigger words, email addresses of interest, or targeted persons and phone numbers. GCHQ and the National Security Agency in the US have identified 40,000 and 30,000 triggers, respectively.

Blackberry To ‘Exit’ Pakistan Over Data-Retention Row Phone-maker Blackberry is to stop operating in Pakistan at the end of 2015 because of government requests to monitor customer data. The Pakistani government wanted to be able to monitor every message and email sent via its phones, it said. In a blogpost, Blackberry said it had decided to "exit the market altogether" over the row. It said Pakistan's demand was not to do with public safety but a request for "unfettered access". In July, Pakistan's Telecommunications Authority told Blackberry the servers underpinning its messaging business would no longer be allowed to operate in the country, citing "security reasons". Blackberry said the "truth" of the matter was Pakistan had wanted to look at all the traffic passing across its messaging servers but the phone company would not "comply with that sort of directive". "Remaining in Pakistan would have meant forfeiting our commitment to protect our users' privacy. That is a compromise we are not willing to make," wrote Mr Beard. This led Pakistan to tell Blackberry its servers could no longer operate in the country saying it did not support "backdoors" that would grant open access to customers' information and had never complied with such a request anywhere in the world. Initially, Blackberry said it would wind up its operations at the end of November. However, the exit date has now been moved to 30 December as the government shutdown deadline has been extended until that date. Industry figures gathered by analyst company IDC suggest that, in early 2015, Blackberry had a 0.5% share of the global smartphone market. In 2014, Blackberry shipped about 5.8 million handsets 70% less than in 2013.

Firefighters are appealing to smokers to take extra care and to keep the risk of fire low, by following some basic fire safety advice: •Never smoke in bed - it's very easy to fall asleep and allow your cigarette to set light to your bedclothes or furnishings •Don’t smoke if you’re drowsy - especially if you're sitting in a comfortable chair or if you've been drinking or taking prescription drugs. Again, it’s easy to fall asleep •Don’t leave a lighted cigarette, pipe or cigar unattended - they can easily overbalance and land on the carpet or other flammable material •Make totally sure that your butts aren’t still smouldering - wet them and empty your ashtray into a metal bin outside the house •Keep lighters, matches and smoking materials out of the reach of children – you can also buy child-resistant lighters and containers for matches South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, said: “Smoking remains one of the biggest causes of accidental house fires, but nearly all of these can be avoided by following some basic some simple rules. For example, never smoke in bed, never leave a lit cigarette unattended, always ensure that cigarettes are put out properly and keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.” For more information and fire safety advice visit the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue website, www.syfire.gov.uk or follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/syfr. Foodbanks Handed Out Half A Million Emergency Supplies In Six Months More than half a million emergency supplies were handed out at Trussell Trust foodbanks in the six months to September, showing that hunger is still a “major concern” for low income families. A total of 506,369 three-day emergency food packs were given to people, a 3% increase on the same period last year. Around 300,000 people visited the foodbanks during the six months, with many saying they had skipped meals. The Trust, which runs 425 foodbanks across the country, said delays and changes to benefits were the main reason people visited them. “We’re seeing that hunger remains a major issue for low income families and individuals. When the proposed changes to tax credits are implemented, we are concerned that more working families will not be able to make ends meet” UK foodbank. Latest national figures show a less dramatic rise. As a nation we need to learn more about the realities of life for people struggling on low incomes and make sure that no incomes are too low to live on. More people than ever face the desperate choice between heating and eating largely due to the rise of low-paid insecure work and the Government’s changes to the social security system. However, a Government spokesman said: "We know that the reasons for foodbank use are complex and often overlapping, so it is misleading to claim that it is driven by benefit delays.“

Why Does A Fly Landing On Your Arm Make You Itch? Mr Shumile J. Chishty Lots of things can make you itch, like dust, nits, Skin infections, allergic reactions, and even certain kinds of cancer can trigger the irritating sensation. Often, these itchy indications are more than just irritating, they can be a chemical warning that something is wrong with your body. In fact, the types and causes of itchiness can be so complex that researchers have divided the types up. There’s a special kind of itch for a light touch, like when a bug lands on your arm and gently brushes over your arm hair, and researchers have just discovered a specific neural pathway leading from the skin to the brain just for these kinds of itches (called mechanical itches). Their work, published recently in the journal ‘science’, may help researchers find a treatment to suppress chronic itchiness.

searchers decided to test a specific protein called neuropeptide Y (NPY), which has a number of functions in the brain such as reducing anxiety or pain. But NPY is also found in the spine, and researchers knew little about what it does there.

The researchers injected mice with a chemical that stops the body from producing NPY proteins in the spinal cord. Over the course of a week, the mice became overly sensitive to touch and couldn’t stop scratching, a reaction that the researchers knew was mechanical because the mice didn’t change their behaviour when they were injected with an itchy chemical. “The fact that the NPY-deficient mice were no more sensitive than controls to more forceful forms of touch and painful stimuli, or even to chemicals that evoke itchiness, suggests light touch uses its own pathway in the nervous system to evoke scratching,” as noted in a press release from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. But, interestingly, this reaction only hapAll over your body, you have special nerve pathways that trans- pened on hairy skin but not bare skin, like on the palms of your mit different types of information from your skin. Pakistan Cricket Receives Govt Fury Beats Klitschko To Become World Champion Approval To Play India In Sri Lanka The Pakistan Cricket Board says it has received approval from the government to play India in Sri Lanka in a limited-overs series. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave the OK last month announced the PCB. The Board of Control for Cricket in India refused to play in the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan's "home" venue for security reasons for five years, and the PCB refused the BCCI's request to play in India. The PCB says details of the short series will be announced "once the BCCI gives a go-ahead for it." Pakistan and India's cricket boards have faced a deadlock for months on a venue for the series. India had refused to play in the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan rejected the Indian board's proposal to play the series in India. According to the ICC's schedule, Pakistan are to host India in the UAE for a full tour comprising

two Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is this year. But India has ruled out the option of playing in the UAE despite Pakistan's insistence. Pakistan has been hosting teams in the UAE for years due to security threats in its own territory, but so far India has not made clear the reason for its reluctance to play there. The series is one of six agreed between the PCB and BCCI under a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year when PM Manmohan Singhled government gave its go-ahead for the series. Later the BCCI said it will have to get permission from their new Modi-led government for the said series. India called off most sporting fixtures between the rivals after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which it says were planned by militants in Pakistan. Pakistan last played a full series in India in 2007 while India last toured Pakistan in 2006.

Britain's Tyson Fury pulled off one of the great boxing upsets as he outpointed Wladimir Klitschko to become heavyweight champion of the world. Ukrainian Klitschko, whose nine-year reign as champion was brought to an end, simply could not work the challenger out and did not do enough to win. Fury, who was awarded the fight 115112, 115-112, 116-111 on the judges' scorecards, is now the WBA, IBF and WBO champion. The 27-year-old Manchester fighter is only Britain's fifth bona fide heavyweight world champion after Bob Fitzsimmons, Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno and David Haye.

Andy Murray Wins The Davis Cup For Great Britain Great Britain have won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 after Andy Murray beat Belgium's David Goffin to clinch the decisive point in Ghent. Murray won 6-3 7-5 6-3 to give the visitors an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie. Britain have now won the team title 10 times, while Murray adds the Davis Cup to his other major titles at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Olympic Games.

2024 Olympics: Hamburg Says No To Hosting Games Residents of the German city of Hamburg have voted against hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Hamburg was one of five cities left in the running, alongside Rome, Paris, Budapest and Los Angeles. But 51.7% of residents of the city and nearby Kiel, where sailing events would have taken place, voted no in a referendum on Sunday. German Olympics officials had picked Hamburg as their preferred candidate city ahead of Berlin. Germany has not hosted the Games since

1972 in Munich. Critics of the plan said it was wasteful, at a cost of â‚Ź11.2bn ($11.9bn; ÂŁ7.9bn), only a small fraction of which had been promised by city authorities. Two years ago, the people of Munich also voted against the Olympics, turning down the chance to host the 2022 Winter Games. In July, the city of Boston decided to withdraw from the race to be host for 2024 amid a lack of public support. The winning city will be selected in September 2017.

Muslim Football Coach Wins Inspiration Prize At Sportswomen Of The Year Awards

Ground-breaking football coach Annie Zaidi has won a top accolade at the 2015 Sportswomen of the Year Awards. She was awarded the Hellen Rollason prize for inspiration at the London ceremony. David Beckham told the star studded event in a video message that Annie was "an inspiration to so many people". Annie, is the only Muslim woman football coach in the region. She has overcome years of sexist and racial abuse to pursue her goals. She currently coaches the under 11s at the Leicester City Girls' of Excellence at Oadby. But as a life-long Arsenal supporter she has her eyes set on the top coaching job at the Emirates Stadium. Annie, 31, who wears a headscarf, won the award

which is named after Hellen Rollason a pioneering television sports journalist. The citation for the award said: "Annie Zaidi is the first South Asian and Muslim woman in her region to acquire a Level 2 coaching certification badge from the Football Association. "When she was the only female manager of a Sunday league team in her area, Zaidi endured overwhelming levels of discrimination from opposition team managers and parents. "However, despite the abuse and lack of inclusion, she did not abandon her dreams, maintaining her passion to coach football." She has just completed her spell in West London coaching the Under 21 men's team at Queen's Park Rangers. She sees her time with QPR as a great step towards her goal of one day becoming a coach in the professional men's game. With the support of QPR director Les Ferdinand and the former Rangers manager Chris Ramsey, she has undertaken her UEFA B licence. Zaidi said she coached at QPR every week and told the boys how it was really done. She added: "I'm hoping to get my UEFA B licence done at the end of this year. "My ultimate job in football? "Well that would be to coach the Arsenal men's team maybe." The winner of the Sportswoman of the Year title was Sheffields Jessica Ennis-Hill for winning the world heptathlon title in the summer.

Russia’s Putin Most Powerful Man In The World "Putin continues to prove he's one of the few men in the world powerful enough to do what he wants,” the magazine said. According to the article, Putin’s domestic approval rating rose to 89 percent, the highest level over the last six years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been chosen as the world’s most powerful person for the third time in a row by Forbes magazine. Putin bested US President Barack Obama, who came in third place after German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the most powerful woman in the world, said the American magazine’s seventh annual list of the world's most powerful people.

Obama became the first incumbent US president not listed in the top two rankings. "As Obama enters the final year of his presidency, it's clear his influence is shrinking, and it's a bigger struggle than ever to get things done," Forbes said. Out of the 73 people on the 2015 list, Pope Francis was fourth and Chinese President Xi Jinping came in fifth, a two-stage drop from last year. To compile the list, Forbes took into consideration the candidates' financial resources, their power in multiple spheres over a large number of people, and if they actively used their power.

Protests Greet Indian Prime Minister India’s prime minister Narendra Modi was greeted with protests and questions over his human rights record as he arrived in Britain last month for a three-day visit. Mr Modi met David Cameron to discuss billions of pounds of trade deals at No.10 as about 100 protesters gathered outside Downing Street. The demonstrators chanted noisily and held placards and banners with messages including “Modi not welcome”, “Stop religious persecution”, and “Remove illegal blockade in Nepal”. “We want to become your number one partner for supporting the finance needed for Mr Modi’s

ambitious plan, making London the world’s centre for offshore rupee trading” David Cameron spelled out his ambition. His visit is the first by an Indian prime minister in almost a decade and Mr Cameron has hailed the trip as an “historic opportunity”. Mr Modi was banned from Britain for ten years for failing to stop race riots which left 1,000 Muslims dead, inspected a guard of honour. “I am confident my UK visit will deepen our ties and we will cooperate extensively in a range of areas of shared interests” said Mr Modi.

Doctors Ordered To Report Patients Unfit To Drive To DVLA Doctors will be obliged under new guidelines to report patients who continue to drive even though they are not medically fit to do so. Elderly drivers are expected to be among those particularly affected as a result of the draft guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC), which described the issue as “difficult territory” for doctors. The guidance states that GPs have to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if a patient is driving against medical advice. As it stands doctors do not need a patient’s consent to inform the DVLA, which is legally responsible for deciding whether a person is medically fit to drive, when a patient has continued driving in such instances. The strengthened advice obliging them to do so is part of a public consultation on the GMC’s core guidance on confidentiality. It aims to help doctors balance their legal and ethical duties of confidentiality with wider public protection responsibilities. The guidance says doctors must disclose information if there is a need to protect individuals or the wider public from the risks of death or serious harm. This can include risks of violent crime,

serious communicable diseases, or risks posed by patients who are not fit to drive. Thirty-seven million drivers depend on the car for getting about and for those with serious medical conditions there is a real fear around losing their licence. But with the right treatment, many illnesses will not lead to people having to hang up the keys. The worst thing motorists can do is ignore medical advice. If they don’t tell the DVLA about something that impacts on their ability to drive safely, then their GP will. Research shows that drivers are much more likely to listen to a medical professional giving them advice about giving up driving than to their friends or family,” he said. It emerged earlier this year that hundreds of motorists have had their driving licence revoked after failing roadside eye tests under new police powers. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed since the powers were introduced in 2013, forces across Britain applied 631 times to revoke licences based on failed attempts to read number plates. In 609 of the cases, the DVLA revoked the drivers’ licences.

More Unqualified Teachers Taking Lessons, Suggests Research More than one in 10 schools in England are using more unqualified teachers to take lessons in response to growing teacher shortages, research suggests. The Times Education Supplement (TES) says a survey of nearly 250 heads revealed almost half had unfilled positions in their schools. It also suggested that more than a quarter were also using more supply teachers. Almost one in 10 of the heads said they had recruited teachers from overseas while almost one in eight said they were asking teachers to cover subjects in which they did not specialise. Science and maths teacher vacancies are the hardest to fill. Other subjects with shortages include English and information technology. The government say otherwise, that teacher

The Lahore Diamond Necklace When the British entered the Lahore Fort in 1849 they found treasures beyond their wildest imagination. We all know about the Koh-i-Noor that the British Raj procured, but there was a lot more in there than just the Koh-i-Noor. A list of items in the 'Toshakhana' of the Fort was handed over to the Administrator of the fort in1849. Based on the old list, the administrator made a new revised list of the treasure inside for the East India Company which included, among other items, the Kohi-Noor, five bags of diamonds, 134 large gharras of gold jewellery and precious stones, a whole store of expensive and rare Cashmere shawls and choghas, relics of Holy Prophet (pbuh) (including his shoes, walking stick, shirt, cap as well as several locks of his hair). This is only a fraction of the wealth the East India Company took away from Lahore. One of the items made from the vast collection of jewels was the Lahore diamond necklace (coronation necklace) for Queen Victoria. The Queen had this necklace made in 1858 from 28 stones that she had removed from the Garter Badge and a ceremonial sword, items from Lahore. The necklace comprising up to 161 carats, making it the most expensive necklace in the world with nine largest stones weighing between 8 and 11 carats and the pendant stone, weighing 22.5 carat (cut down from original 103 carat). That pendant stone is the Lahore Diamond hence the name of the necklace. Till date this necklace is among the most expen-

sive necklaces in the world. The necklace has been passed on through the generations with Queens and Queen consorts have displayed the magnificant jewels time and time again. So every time the Queen of England steps out in all her royalty for state functions adorning the Lahore Diamond necklace, you can smile for you know where her jewels comes from. The relics of Holy Prophet (pbuh) in the toshakhana were bought by the Fakir Family for a sum of Rs. 300,000 in early 1800's and were originally kept inside the Lahore Fort. In 1847, Fakir Noor-ud-din, who was serving as the member of Regency Council for Maharja Duleep Singh, created a waqf for the relics and allotted Rs. 800,000 for their maintenance. When the British got hold of the list of treasure at the Toshakhana, the relics were missing. When they found out that the relics were with the Fakir Family they were demanded to be handed over. The family archives report of an altercation between Governor General Dalhousie and Fakir Noor-ud-din on the matter and it was only brought to rest when Fakir Noor-ud-din shrewdly brought it to the Governor General notice that they had been placed under a waqf and even the English law prohibited gifting any item placed under a trust. Thus the relics were saved from being gifted away like the other treasures and are still in possession of the Fakir Family who display them every 9th of Muharram at their Durbaar-e-Aali near the Fakir Khana Museum.

Rare Northern White Rhino Dies In Captivity A northern white rhinoceros - one of just four remaining worldwide - has died at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California. The 41-year-old female called Nola had been receiving treatment for a bacterial infection and underwent surgery in November, according to a statement on the zoo’s website. She was placed under constant veterinary watch after her appetite and activity levels declined. "Early this morning, the team made the difficult decision to euthanise her,“ the zoo said in a statement. Nola had lived at the zoo since 1989. The world’s three remaining northern white rhinoceroses reside at a conservatory in Kenya.

numbers and quality are at record levels. A Department for Education spokesman responded: "The number and quality of teachers in our classrooms is at an all-time high. "New figures show we have recruited more trainees than last year and the number of former teachers coming back to the classroom has continued to rise year after year, from 14,720 in 2011 to 17,350 in 2014. "The National Teaching Service will recruit 1,500 outstanding teachers and school leaders to work in underperforming schools in challenging areas. "We are expanding Teach First into every region of the country and the School Direct programme offers all schools, regardless of location, the chance to take control and develop high-quality staff and future leaders.”

Britain's oldest tree is estimated to be at least 3,000 years old - possibly as old as 5,000 years. The Fortingall Yew is found in a small village in deepest Perthshire. When it was first measured, in 1769, its girth was 52ft (17m).

Possessory title will be granted where there is no evidence that a person owns the land. The lack of evidence may be as a result of lost or destroyed deeds or because the person wished to claim ownership of land that was never actually given to him. Adverse possession is possession by someone other than the land owner (i.e. a squatter). In order to obtain possessory title it will be necessary to demonstrate that you have occupied the land with an intention to possess without payment or consent. In the case of unregistered land the application can be made after 12 years’ occupation. In the case of registered land it can be made after 10 years

You can extend without an application for planning permission as long as you don't cover more than half the area of land around the original house. If you do require planning permission, you will need to make the application to your Local Planning Authority. If approved, you may then begin your extension. Family Bonding “You can choose your friends but not your family”. God chooses family and He knows who is best for us. Families once used to give up on everything just to be with one another. Nowadays, being with your family has become a liability not only on children but also on parents. During our school days we were taught a very famous saying “Families that eat together stays together” which was implemented and the whole family gathered on the dinner table every night, sharing their activities and what made them happy and how did the school, work, office go. Everyone shared how he or she felt on different topics discussed. They enjoyed the 1 or 2 hour time together that made them close. Nowadays, family bonding is missing. Families are no fonder of eating together. They find spending time with family as an obligation which needs to be done by every member. If they have to spend time together, they use their phones, gadgets and other accessories, which obviously distracts other members who are willing to share something important or worth telling. Children brought up under the supervision of their grandparents are more loving, caring and secured as compare to others. The youth believes that spending time with friends is the same as spending time with family, but there are some things that only a family can teach. Family bonding can develop in the following ways; • Arranging parties and picnics with relatives to intensify family relationships. • Helping children with homework. • Playing a child’s favourite game. • Asking opinion of children on different topics. • Trusting every member of your family Spending time with family teaches the following things. ETIQUETTES Those who have good bonding among their families are well mannered and know all the habits of eating. They are well aware of what to talk among elders or youngsters. BETTER COMMUNICATION AND UNDERSTANDING Families having good bonding. They are more likely to have better communication and understanding than those who do not. ART OF APPRECIATION While spending quality time with family members, every child learns the art of appreciation in the form of telling how good the food is. Every member learns to express how nicely everything has been taken care of, how the affection of parents, grandparents and siblings helps. CLOSENESS Families that have good bonding are close to each other, share everything, and keep no secrets. According to many people in society if the family-bonding element is lost, then the child will suffer from loneliness and depression, which will harm him mentally. The parent-child bonding can increase the level of confidence in a child and can be helpful to achieve academic and professional success.

4. What is an overriding interest form? Why do I need to sign it? You must complete an overriding interest form when selling your home to confirm whether there are any interests in the property which are not registered but will bind the new owner. An example of this is where tenants in your property have leases of less than 7 years. You must sign the document to make the buyer aware of any unregistered interests in the property.

NOT IN OUR NAME If I said to you that my name is Zebra. Would you all then refer to me as a Zebra? And would all that I did then be compared to that of the innate behaviour of all Zebras? Would I be the only living embodiment of what is a true Zebra? Would my actions be the only true actions of a Zebra? If the world hasn’t gone mad, then there driving those of us still sane completely mad. This ludicrous example is the kind of logic being applied when it comes to ISIL/Daesh (the name they hate being called), the so called Islamic State (the name they love being called). The British media love referring to the terrorist group by that which they prefer and which makes them happy. Apart from this is there any other area in which the media would capitulate to the wishes of ISIL. Would they for example start referring to the terrain as The Levant or recognising the borders as seen by ISIL and not those of the State of Iraq or Syria or any other country within the region. Would they accept the legitimacy of the self -appointed (Caliphate) and refer to their leader as His Excellency Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi, the Caliph of the Islamic State of Al Shaam. No they would not. So why is it becoming difficult for the media (BBC,

ITV, SKY etc.) to refer to them as ISIL/Daesh? The French Republic who has just had a massacre inspired by ISIL on the streets of Paris, resulting in some 130 and counting men and women, citizens and foreigners alike losing their lives. They are clear in the language they use to refer to the terrorist group as Daesh. The Americans have consistently referred to the group as either ISIL or Daesh and where possible refrain from calling them Islamic State. Now the British Prime Minister David Cameron was quite clear in wanting to change the vernacular of reference for the group to Daesh and Ministers alike have also used the term when discussing the group. Yet consistently you will hear the BBC and others again and again complying with the wishes of Daesh and referring to them as Islamic State. As President Obama and Prime Ministers Cameron and Hollande have recognised this is a loaded term, with dangerous connotations, which is

High Court’s First Asian Woman Judge Sworn In The first Asian woman to be appointed as a High Court judge has been sworn in at a ceremony in London. Bobbie Cheema-Grubb QC, 49, is one of just four "non-white" High Court judges, according to HM Courts and Tribunals Service records. Her appointment, which was announced in October, brings the number of female High Court judges to 23 out of 108. She is described in Chambers Bar UK as a "wellrespected" barrister who "relishes complex and demanding cases". The recent appointments to the High Court Bench of Bobbie Cheema-Grubb and Juliet Mary May QC, who is currently a circuit judge, increase the number of women High Court judges to 23 out of 108 (21%). That is the highest it has ever been, and represents a more than doubling of the feeble figure of 10 just a decade ago. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb's appointment also nudges the number of ethnic minority High

wildly misrepresentative of one of the world’s great faiths. You see whilst ISIL /Daesh may want many things and demands, but to hijack the name of a faith of over 1.5 billion people of all creeds and cultures, races and nationalities and then do everything they can that is the antithesis of that faith, murder, rape, oppression, barbarity, destruction, suicide. That is something that should not only be revolting to all Muslims, but rejected by all decent human beings of any other faith and no faith alike. People are impressionable and whilst ISIL /Daesh will be supported by Israeli settlers, American Neo- Conservatives, The French National Front and BNP alike to have their rights upheld and be accurately labelled and reported as Islamic State. The rest of the sane world should surely know better and responsible national broadcasters such as the BBC, no doubt happy to accept the license fee of hundreds of thousands of honest law abiding British Muslims, should

Jaan. M. Khan E Mail: Virtueous@hushmail.com clearly make a distinction between an apocalyptic death cult like ISIL/Daesh and language which slurs every Muslim with their actions and legacy. Theirs is the legacy of The Kawarij the seventh century deviant group, literally meaning those who want away (faith), who were challenged and fought by Ali the son in law of the holy prophet Muhammad PBUH) and fourth Caliph, who is universally agreed as one of the first four rightly guided Caliphs from the genesis of Islam. Upon defeat they offered to make peace, knowing full well that Imam Ali as a virtue of Islam would accept. They then went on to assassinate Imam Ali, whilst he was at prayer, from behind with the use of a poison tipped sword. Whilst practically annihilated, pockets of their communities survived within Syria and Iraq. This modern day manifestation of The Khawaraj ISIL/Daesh, would offer the naïve, ill informed and foolish would be recruits a certainty of death, something which God almighty has destined for all humankind anyway. What they don’t offer is a life of opportunity to search for peace and do good, to assist your fellow man kind Muslim and non- Muslim alike, so that your inevitable departure from this world will leave it better than when you found it and you would have honoured the words of Imam Ali who said you are either my brother in Islam or you are my brother in humanity. The emphasis here is on the brotherhood on man and an inevitable shared fate.

Court judges up from three to four. Some progress, yes, but diversity remains a stubbornly difficult problem at the higher levels of the judiciary. It hasn't been helped by some past initiatives including the former Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine's exhortation to women and black and minority ethnic candidates to join the judiciary under the rallying cry: 'Don't be shy, apply'. The senior judiciary is still, and is perceived to be, a predominantly white, male, middle-class group. It will take many more Bobbie Cheema-Grubbs to change that. Derby-born Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, who went to the City of Leeds School, was first called to the bar in 1989. The first High Court judge from a black or minority ethnic background to be appointed was Mrs Justice Dobbs QC in 2004. She retired in 2013. The first Asian male judge to be appointed was Mr Justice Singh, who was sworn in in 2011.

Children now spend an average of 15 hours a week online and are becoming increasingly trusting of what they find, a study has revealed. The amount of time eight to 15-year-olds spend on the internet has more than doubled over the last decade, Ofcom's report into media attitudes among children and parents found. But these so-called digital natives - children who have grown up with the internet - often lack "online nous" to decide if what they see is true or impartial, the regulator concluded. Almost one in 10 children who go online (8%) believe information from social media websites or apps is "all true" - doubling from 4% last year - and most 12 to 15-year-olds are unaware that "vloggers", or video bloggers, can be paid to endorse products. Almost a fifth of online 12 to 15-year-olds (19%) believe information returned by a search engine such as Google or Bing must be true, but only a third (31%) are able to identify paid-for adverts. The study found children are increasingly turning to YouTube for "true and accurate" information about what is going on in the world, with 8% of online youngsters naming the video sharing site as their preferred choice for this type of information - up from 3% last year. But just half of 12 to 15-year-olds who watch YouTube (52%) are aware that advertising is the main source of funding on the site, and less than half (47%) are aware vloggers are often paid to

favourably mention products or services. Children aged 12 to 15 were split on whether being online helped them be themselves, with 34% agreeing and 35% disagreeing, while 31% were unsure. The study did find that almost three quarters of older children (72%) believe most people behave differently when they are online, and more than two-thirds (67%) of older girls with a social media account said there were things they disliked about it compared with 52% of boys. Almost a third (30%) were concerned about people spreading gossip or rumours and a quarter (23%) said people can be "nasty, mean or unkind to others". Surprisingly, many children are also concerned about spending too much time online, the survey found. Around one in 10 online children aged eight to 15 (9%) said they disliked spending too much time on the internet, and almost a third of 12 to 15-year-olds (31%) admitted they could sometimes spend too much time on social media in particular. Almost all children - 97% - could recall advice they had been given about staying safe online, particularly from parents. The large majority (84%) said they would tell their parents, another family member or a teacher if they saw something online they found worrying, nasty or offensive, but 6% of children say they would not tell anyone.

One In Four Patients Have Trouble Getting Through To Their Doctor On Phone The number of people who struggle to get through to their GP on the phone is rising. Most patients say they can get an appointment but some still find it difficult to make one, a National Audit Office report says. The proportion of patients saying they were able to get an appointment fell from 91% in 2011/12 to 89% in 2014/15. And 27% of patients said it was not easy to get through to their GP practice on the phone, compared with 19% in 2011/12. Patients do not have good enough access to primary healthcare. The report highlights how for many younger

patients, GP opening times are inconvenient. The government has pledged to increase access to GPs seven days a week, with extended opening in the evening and at weekends. But, as of October 2014, only 18% of patients were within 2km of a GP surgery that was open until 8pm on every week night, the NAO found. A fifth of patients also said opening hours were not convenient, up slightly on 2011/12. The percentage of patients who get to see their preferred GP always, almost always or most of the time, has also fallen, from 66% in 2011/12 to 60% in 2014/15.

Immigrant Spouses Must Speak English, Court Rules The Supreme Court has rejected a challenge against an immigration rule requiring people to be able to speak English before coming to the UK to live with their spouse. Five justices in London were urged to rule that the pre-entry measure is "unreasonable, disproportionate and discriminatory". The panel of judges, headed by the court's president Lord Neuberger, unanimously dismissed an appeal by two wives who are British citizens. Their husbands, who cannot speak English, are foreign nationals and wish to join them in the UK. Both claimed the requirement breaches their right to a private and family life under article 8

of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). It is said in both cases that it would not be feasible for their husbands to pass a test before coming to the UK. But the Supreme Court has decided that the rule does not infringe article 8. Although the Supreme Court rejected the challenge against the rule itself, the judges have asked for further submissions from the parties on "whether a declaration should be made that the operation of the guidance in its present form is incompatible with article 8 rights where compliance with the requirement is impracticable". The Supreme Court judgment follows earlier rulings in the High Court and Court of Appeal that there was no disproportionate interference with family life. The justices declared that the "rule itself is not disproportionate". Since late 2010 the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen or person settled in Britain has been required to pass an English language test before coming to this country. Before the amendment to the immigration rules, they were only required to demonstrate such knowledge two years after entering the UK.

Frying With Vegetable Oil Could Be More Damaging Than Butter Frying food with sunflower or corn oil could be more damaging than using butter or lard, scientists are warning. When vegetable oils are heated, researchers have shown that they release toxic chemicals which have been linked to cancer. They are now recommending that cooks use olive oil, coconut oil - or even butter or lard. For years, health advice has suggested using oils high in polyunsaturated fats are better for health than saturated animal fats. But experts say that heating the vegetable oils releases aldehydes, which have been linked to illnesses like heart disease, dementia and cancer. Things like vegetable oil, when we do heat them to very high temperatures, produce toxic chemicals called aldehydes, which are thought to be linked to heart disease and cancer. Some forms

of neuro diseases like Alzheimer’s have been linked to this and unfortunately the longer you fry the oils for, the worse they get for you. The research team at De Montfort University in Leicester say fish and chips fried in vegetable oil could contain 100 to 200 times more aldehydes than the daily safe limit recommended by the World Health Organisation. Measured in tiny units called millimoles, the research showed that when heated to high temperatures over a period of 30 minutes coconut oil released half a millimole of toxins, butter had just over one millimole, whilst sunflower oil had over five millimoles. Many chefs have long insisted that roasting and frying with saturated fats like butter, lard and dripping is tastier, if not healthier. Now it seems we could have the best of both worlds.

The Current Climate BARRISTER AZAR IQBAL Just a quick word on the current climate surrounding the Muslim ummah in UK (and globally) and the recent barbaric and heinous attacks in France. We as Muslims should not be apologetic for being Muslims and see the need to apologise to anyone, for these callus attacks, by virtue of being Muslim. We stand in solidarity with anyone who is a victim, and anyone that is targeted by these terrorists. There is no such thing as an "Islamic" terrorist. A terrorist is a terrorist full stop. The western media's hype and propaganda is to malign the peaceful religion of Islam. We should not be hiding behind a veil of fear or indignation and resign to the fact that others will stand up for us. It is incumbent on each one of us to show the public at large that we as British Muslims are part of this society and will not tolerate these remorseless acts of violence to be associated or ascribed to us. GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES PROPOSALS TO REGULATE MADDRASSAS 1. Government published its consultation paper entitled “ Out-of-school education settings” on the back of David Cameron’s proposals at the Conservative party conference regarding registering Mosques and Madrassas. 2. The BBC news story about this can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34933970 3. The document states “We want to be sure that teaching is compatible with, and does not undermine, fundamental British values” (secular liberal values) 4. It is clear that the government doesn’t wish to register Mosques and Madrassas for health and safety reasons, but to control what is taught. 5. The government is currently undertaking consultation over the proposals to register the maddrassas. 6. We encourage all Imams, Mosques, Madrassas , Council of Mosques and Muslim activists to sign our Joint Statement by visiting the site below http://keepmosquesindependent.org 8. At present we have 240 Mosques, Imams and Muslim activists. Including the Bradford Council of Mosques, Manchester Council of Mosques and Bolton Council of Mosques have signed the joint statement. In addition we have over 10,000 signatures on paper opposing the measures to inspect and regulate Mosques. If you would like more information please see fill in your details at the link below http://keepmosquesindependent.org/organise-community-meeting/ Please pass this onto to others and share with your local Mosque and Imams. http://keepmosquesindependent.org

SHEFFIELD TO MANCHESTER £6bn ROAD TUNNEL A major road and rail tunnel through the Peak District could be the longest tunnel in Europe, a report says. The scheme to bore through the Peak District to improve links between Sheffield and Manchester is feasible, but further investigation is needed. Such a tunnel would result in quicker journey times and avoid delays caused by poor weather in the winter months. Highways England, which produced the report, said a more in-depth study will be ready by the autumn of 2016. The government study looked at the feasibility of tunnelling under the A628 Woodhead Pass, in a scheme which would reportedly cost £6bn. The document says it is possible the tunnel could cut current road journey times by up to 30 minutes and avoid the delays

caused by bad weather over the Pennines . The planned new link between Sheffield and Manchester would "include a tunnelled section, which could range from between 20-30km (12.4 -18.6 miles), making it one of the longest road tunnels ever built." Although the scheme only looks at the early ideas for such a scheme, Highways England said no means of funding the plan had yet been identified, but there could be a toll levied on tunnel users. The options in the report are separate from the Department of Transport's £15bn package to transform major roads across England. The final report looking at the transport, social, economic and environmental aspects of the scheme will be produced in October 2016.

Curry crisis Tandoori chef shortages are leading to restaurant closures. It’s as synonymous with British cuisine as fish and chips but the much loved Indian curry is in crisis. Restaurants up and down the country are complaining of a shortage in tandoori chefs, meaning two a week are closing their doors. The problem isn’t due to a lack of demand but due to difficulty in filling vacancies. Front of house roles and kitchen staff are easy to come by but not chefs. Enam Ali, MBE, a Bangladeshi businessman who runs an award winning Indian restaurant in Epsom, blames several factors for the turmoil in the industry. Firstly, attitudes among second generation Indian and Bangladeshis are changing. They are shunning a career in the kitchen and enjoy-

www.ilmnews.com

ing the opportunity and education their parents worked hard to provide. Another reason is the UK’s immigration policy, which Mr Ali says is too strict. He is calling on the Government to allow two-year working visas so experienced chefs can fly in from abroad. "The gap is huge, “he says. "There are 12,000 restaurants. If they need two chefs then that means a gap of 24,000. How do we fill this?" Britain puts a cap on skilled migrants arriving from outside the EU and chefs coming in must be paid at least £29,570 a year. That is £5,000 more than the average salary in the industry. 85 per cent of the 10,000 Indian restaurants in Great Britain are run by people from Bangladesh.

Britain’s Home Secretary Theresa May has said that British Pakistani women are excelling in different fields yet too often their achievements go unacknowledged, but their role in the British democracy is second to none. The Home Secretary said this last month while addressing the first ever Women Achievers Congress organised by World Congress of Overseas Pakistanis (WCOP) at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster to celebrate the struggles and triumphs of girls and women from the British Pakistani Diaspora. She spoke about Britain’s historic relations with Pakistan and said that Muslims stood up to defend freedom and democracy all along, but notably in the Second World War. She appreciated the role of WCOP in celebrating the achievement of Pakistani origin women. “I want to

thank the World Congress of Overseas Pakistanis for organising this Women Achievers event. And I want to thank the many British Pakistani women who contribute so much to this country and help make Britain what it is today.” She said that the contribution of British Pakistani women is all around, in professional, public and private lives. She said that British Pakistani women were doing well in politics, but also in academia, public service, media, business, medicine, charities and in campaigning to improve the lives of people in this country and abroad. “I know from my visits to Pakistan and to communities in the UK, the warmth, compassion and good humour of the people of Pakistan and here. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK Syed Ibne Abbas said that Pakistan is giving full rights to women in all walks of life; first Muslim woman PM, Speaker, Foreign Minister; 33% reserved quota for women in Parliament. “Pakistan is on the move, and wants to show the world the positivity that is generating there. Pakistan has moderate, enlightened, inclusive society; our diaspora in the UK is vibrant, and contributing a lot to British society.” The high commissioner dubbed the Congress as one of the most successful events to highlight achievements of women and hoped it would become a sustainable tradition. Over 500 delegates attended the conference and heard speeches on. The conference was described by the attendees as a great success and a milestone in the right direction. Speaking to The News, the participants said that the organisers had taken an important initiative by organising a conference of this nature which is aimed at encouraging more Pakistani women into politics and to bring them together for greater interaction.

Religious, Race Hate Crimes’ Surge Cause Alarm In Rotherham A surge in religious and race hate crimes is causing renewed alarm within the town of Rotherham, a media report has said. According to Sky News report children as young as five are said to have been racially abused and one estimate suggests a tenfold increase in hate crimes. Community leaders have called for Government intervention amid claims that some of the crimes were going unpunished, it added. Others say local shoppers are travelling out of the town due to the number of far-right protest marches. An advocate for abused children, Chrissy Meleady, said she had seen far right extremists chasing a family and screaming "Muslim paedophile" at a seven-year-old boy. She said: "We've had children having their jaws and arms broken. We've had women walking home from shopping with their children running, trying to escape far right demonstrations with gangs of men chasing and roaring at them that they were going to harm them." The number of attacks is said to have risen significantly since a report in 2014 found that 1,400 white children in Rotherham had been subjected to sexual abuse by predominantly Pakistani-heritage men. Some community leaders say the recent terrorist attacks in Paris have inflamed an already toxic atmosphere in the town.

Some taxi drivers in the town have accused the extreme group Britain First of trying to "wind them up" by implying that innocent Muslims are involved in child grooming.

Largest Diamond For 110 Years Is Discovered One of the largest diamonds seen in more than a century has been unearthed in Botswana. The 1,111-carat stone was found on the south lobe of its Karowe mine in the southern African nation. It was said to be the world’s second-biggest gem-quality diamond ever recovered after the Cullinan diamond which features in Britain’s Crown Jewels. Canada-based Lucara Diamond said that it was yet to be fully examined and processed, meaning it was impossible to put any kind of value on it. Its final worth will be determined by its colour and clarity and how it is cut. After Lucara announced the gem’s discovery, it confirmed 24 hours later that two further stones - the largest being an estimated 813 carats - had been found at the same mine. The focus, however, was on the Type IIa diamond - which measured 65 mm by 56 mm by 40 mm. This historic diamond recovery puts Lucara and the

Karowe mine amongst a select number of truly exceptional diamond producers. The Cullinan diamond was a 3,106-carat stone found in the Premier mine in South Africa in 1905. It was cut into several polished gems to form the Great Star of Africa and Lesser Star of Africa.

Foreign Office Advises Against Travel To Parts Of Pakistan In the wake of the deadly Russian plane crash in Egypt in which all 224 on board were killed, the British Foreign Office has issued a list of counties which it considers the most dangerous for tourists. The UK government has advised its nationals to avoid visiting some parts of Pakistan among other countries. Tourists are advised against travelling to countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen among others, according to the Independent. Further, the British Foreign Office advised its nationals against visiting some parts of Pakistan along with some parts of India, Bangladesh, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey and Thailand. The threat of terror attack from Islamic State group is one of the reasons for these travel warnings for certain countries. However, some countries are deemed partly dangerous due to unrest in particular regions. Included in this is the area of north Sinai in Egypt, where the Russian commercial A321 plane crashed last in November. Britain has also asked all Britons who are currently in Syria to “leave now by any practical means” because the Foreign Office would be unable to provide any consular services. Parts of Russia are also deemed dangerous by

the government, including the region close to the border with Ukraine and the area of Chechnya. Areas close to the border with Georgia and Azerbaijan are also warned against. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to: •the Federally Administered Tribal Areas •the districts of Charsadda, Kohat, Tank, Bannu, Lakki, Dera Ismail Khan, Swat, Buner and Lower Dir in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa •the city of Peshawar and districts south of the city, including travel on the Peshawar to Chitral road via the Lowari Pass •northern and western Balochistan •travel on the Karakoram Highway between Islamabad and Gilgit •The FCO advise against all but essential travel to: •the Kalesh Valley, the Bamoboret Valley and Arandu District to the south and west of Chitral in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa •the city of Quetta •the city of Nawabshah in Sindh Province, and areas of interior Sindh to the north of Nawabshah Around 270,000 British nationals visit Pakistan every year. Most visits are trouble-free.

Thousand Of Miles Of UK Roads ‘Have No Mobile Phone Coverage’ More than 4,500 miles of UK roads have no mobile phone coverage. About 2% of all UK roads still have no 2G coverage - the minimum required to make a call or send a text - the RAC Foundation suggested. Almost 29,000 miles have only partial coverage, while 14,554 miles of road have no 3G coverage, it added. The RAC Foundation said its research was based on analysis of data published by communications regulator Ofcom. Areas with least coverage include vast expanses of Scotland, parts of Wales, Northern areas of England, and North Yorkshire. RAC Foundation said: "There are thousands of miles of road along which you would not want to break down. "Even where there is partial network

coverage it might not be from your network provider." However, mobile phone operators said billions of pounds a year were being invested in boosting phone coverage in rural areas. A Vodafone spokesperson said it was investing "around £1bn per year to deliver a strong signal for customers". A spokeswoman for EE said mobile phone coverage in the UK "has never been better than it is now". "Ofcom's checker shows EE already has the most coverage, and all operators have agreed to invest £5bn to increase coverage further." Under an industry agreement, customers can make 999 calls wherever there is network available - even if it is not via their own provider.

World’s Largest Cloning Factory To Produce Cattle, Police Dogs And Pets The world’s largest animal cloning factory is under construction in China, with plans to churn out dogs, horses and up to a million beef cattle a year, reports said, prompting online and scientific concerns. The 200-million-yuan ($31-million) facility will include cloning laboratories and a gene bank. China has been cloning animals since 2000, four years after the birth in Scotland of Dolly, the world’s first cloned sheep. It will develop animals such as pet and police dogs, racehorses and cows, to be sold on the open market on an industrial scale. The factory in the northern port of Tianjin is set to start production next year, with initial capacity of 100,000 cattle embryos a year, growing to one million. A professor of food science at China Agricultural University, said there would be

“almost no difference” between cloned and real cattle, but that companies should not rush to put cloned meat on the table without “rigorous risk assessments and repeated experiments”.

‘Mutant’ Mosquito Could Help Wipe Out Malaria A mosquito has been genetically modified so it cannot pass malaria on to humans - raising hopes the disease could be eliminated. US scientists used a gene editing technique to alter the insect’s

DNA - meaning it would produce antibodies that stop malaria being passed to people. Significantly, this trait was then inherited by 99.5% of the mosquito’s offspring. Scientists described this as an “astonishing” result. Researchers from the University of California at Irvine, said: “This opens up the real promise that this technique can be adapted for eliminating malaria. This is a significant first step. We know the gene works." The experiment could lead to modified mosquitos being released to breed - hopefully saving millions of human lives. A "cut and paste” gene editing technique called Crispr was used for the study. One intended consequence was that offspring had glowing red fluorescent eyes - allowing scientists to see at a glance which of them had the malaria-fighting genes.

40 STAVELEY ROAD SHEFFIELD S8 0ZQ ‘Secret Wife’ Of Late Saudi King Fahd Awarded £25m The “secret wife” of the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia has been awarded millions of pounds by the High Court judge who believed her claim she had been told she would be looked after for the rest of her life. Palestinian-born Janan Harb, 68, was told she had the right to more than £15m and the value of two London properties. Ms Harb said she secretly married the king - who ruled from 1982 to 2005 - in 1968 when he was still a prince and the country’s interior minister. She was just 19 at the time and the royal family opposed the marriage because she was from a Christian family, she said. Ms Harb, now 68, was sent away from Saudi Ara-

bia in 1970 when the family “wrongly” blamed her for King Fahd’s methadone addiction, she added. She told the court how she had been staying at the Dorchester Hotel in June 2003 when she was approached by Prince Abdul Aziz, the son of another of the king’s wives, who promised her financial security. At the time of the meeting, the then-king was seriously ill and Ms Harb said Prince Abdul agreed to pay her £12m and transfer two flats in the prestigious Cheyne Walk part of Chelsea to her ownership, thereby fulfilling his father’s wishes. The prince failed to attend court although he did write to deny the claim.

Saudi Women Candidates Begin First Ever Election Campaign Women in Saudi Arabia running for public office for the first time in the country’s history are set to begin campaigning. Around 900 women are standing in the municipal elections on 12 December. In another first, women will also be able to vote in the contest. So far only 130,600 women have signed up to vote, compared with more than 1.35 million men, out of a voting population of 21 million. Female candidates say this will make it very difficult for them to win seats on the 284 councils. "It’s very, very difficult for us to win and to target our voters,“ said Nassima al Sadah, a candidate in the Gulf coast city of Qatif. This is one of the first steps for women’s rights, a big step for us. Sahar Hassan Nasief, an activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah The 42-year old is planning a social media onslaught supported by traditional banners and brochures. None will be able to carry her picture, however - a restriction that also applies to male candidates. It will be the third time men have been able to vote after previous ballots in 2005 and 2011. Saudi Arabia,

an absolute monarchy which applies a strict interpretation of Islam, has no female cabinet ministers. It is also the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive. They must cover themselves in black from head-to-toe in public, and must get permission from a male family member to travel, work or marry. Restrictions remain in place despite the slow growth of women’s rights under the late king Abdullah, who introduced the elections in 2005 and said women would be allowed to participate this time around. Abdullah died in January and was succeeded by King Salman, who has stuck to the election timetable.

‘We’re Not Leaving’: Aamir Confirms Actor Aamir Khan, who has been drawing criticism for his statement on rising levels of ‘intolerance’ in the country, said neither he nor his wife have any intention of leaving India. Reacting to the censure that he is ‘anti-national’, he said: “Let me state categorically that neither I,

nor my wife Kiran, have any intention of leaving the country. We never did, nor would we like to in the future. "Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. India is my country, I love it, I feel fortunate for being born here, and this is where I am staying,” Aamir stated. “Secondly, I stand by everything that I have said in my interview. To all those people who are calling me anti-national, I would like to say that I am proud to be an Indian, and I do not need anyone’s permission or endorsement for that,” he said. The actor’s remarks on intolerance continued to draw frenzy with political parties hitting out on him. In parallel, many political leaders and people from the film industry came to Aamir’s rescue. NCP chief Sharad Pawar shielding Aamir said: “Aamir could leave the country if he wanted to, was also indicative of intolerance. The country is not any body's private property.” The outrage reached an extent where a complaint was filed in a court against Aamir and wife under various sections, including sedition over his remarks.

Saeed Jaffrey, Bollywood And British Screen Legend, Dies Aged 86 Bollywood actor Saeed Jaffrey, who starred in films including A Passage To India and Gandhi, has died at the age of 86. Jaffrey had more than 150 films to his name, which included classic Indian movies such as Satyajit Ray's Shatranj ke Khiladi (The Chess Players). Television credits include Tandoori Nights, The Far Pavilions and The Jewel In The Crown. Jaffrey collapsed at his London home from a brain haemorrhage and never regained consciousness, a statement said. He died peacefully in the early hours of November 14 at a London hospital. Born in India, Jaffrey formed his own English theatre company in Delhi, where he starred in productions of Shakespeare, Wilde, Priestley, Fry, Dylan Thomas and Tennessee Williams. He then went to America as a Fulbright scholar, where he gained a master's degree in drama. In the Millennium edition of the Guinness Book of Records, Jaffrey was named as the only Indian actor to appear in 18 international films. The actor also starred in over 100 films in India. In 1998, he became part of the first Asian

family to feature regularly in ITV soap Coronation Street, playing Ravi Desai. Jaffrey was made an OBE in 1995 for his contributions to drama, becoming the first Indian to receive the award.

One Direction may have lost a member this year, but the chart-topping boyband has not seen their success diminish in the wake of Zayn Malik's departure. The group - featuring 22-year-olds Niall Horan, Liam Payne, 21-year-old Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, 23 - have retained their title as Britain's richest under-30s for the third year running in Heat magazine's annual Rich List. The four-piece beat Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Pattinson and Adele by amassing a combined fortune of an estimated £82.08 million, up £4.56 million from last year. Malik, 22, who left One Direction in March and announced he has signed a solo record deal with RCA Records in July, made his solo debut on the list in eighth position with estimated individual

earnings of around £20.52 million. The list, now in its fifth year, analyses the stars's estimated financial earnings from TV appearances, movie, record sales and product endorsements.

One Billion Log On To Facebook Every Day For the first time, one billion people now check their Facebook News Feed every day. The social network now has more than 1.5 billion registered users for the first time ever - around half of the world’s internet-connected population. The figures were revealed in the company’s third quarter earnings report, which beat Wall Street predictions. The good news saw Facebook’s share price soar, helping it break yet another company record - reaching a $300bn valuation for the first time. “We had a good quarter and got a lot done. We’re focused on innovating and investing for the long term to serve our community and connect the entire world” says Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Revenues jumped to $4.5 billion. Ad revenue was the key driver behind the performance, growing 45% year-on-year to $4.3 billion dollars. Earnings stood at $896m - they could have been even higher but the firm is spending hundreds of millions on projects including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and bringing the internet to emerging markets. Most of Facebook’s new users come from outside Europe and North America. Facebook said ads on mobile devices accounted for 78% of advertising revenue, up from 66% a year ago. Chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said: “We think we have the best mobile ad product in the market. We’re able to target, we’re able to measure. We have broad scale.”

‘Lifesaver’ Medical Dressing Changes Colour When It Detects Infection

Online Brain Training ‘Boosts Memory In Over 50S’ Brain training exercises have been shown to improve the memory skills of those suffering with Alzheimer’s. Playing regularly over six months also helped how well older people perform everyday tasks such as doing the shopping and using public transport. Researchers at King’s College London tested almost 7,000 adults aged over 50 by asking them to play brain training games that challenge problemsolving and memory skills. The brain training led to significant improvements in the day-to-day lives of people over 60, and in reasoning and verbal learning in those over 50. The impact of a brain training package such as this one could be extremely signifi-

cant for older adults who are looking for a way to proactively maintain their cognitive health as they age. The improvements were most effective when people played brain-training games at least five times a week. An earlier study by the same researchers suggested that such exercises offered no benefits for those younger than 50. Last month, scientists in California and Berlin spoke out against the brain-training industry, saying there is “little evidence that playing brain games improves underlying broad cognitive abilities, or that it enables one to better navigate a complex realm of everyday life”.

A hi-tech medical dressing that changes colour when it detects infection has been developed by scientists. The breakthrough - hailed as a lifesaver - will improve treatments for burns patients and help combat the global problem of antibiotic resistance, according to the developers. Children with burn wounds are particularly susceptible to bacterial infections because of their immature immune systems. The prototype dressing, which changes colour as soon as the wound is infected, has been developed by scientists at the University of Bath. Using this dressing will allow clinicians to quickly identify infections without removing it, meaning that patients can be diagnosed and treated faster. Existing methods take up to 48 hours and require removing the wound dressing which is

painful and distressing for the patient and may result in slower healing and potentially life-long scarring. Owning to this time delay, when a child with a burn shows symptoms of a possible infection, the clinician often has to treat them with antibiotics as a precaution before their infection is confirmed. However, treatment with antibiotics when there is no infection can lead to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. Once the dressing has been fully tested, the team plans to develop it for use in hospitals in around four years. public WiFi and only use it for non-sensitive data activity if you are unsure about it’s security. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe when using public WiFi: Always use reputable internet security software on all your devices including your laptop, PC, MAC, tablets and smartphone. If a WiFi connection does not require a password, it is insecure. So, don’t send any confidential information over this network e.g. username, passwords, private data etc. Look for public places that do offer free WiFi but require a password which you obtain from them. Look out for the https in the web address in your browser and the padlock symbol when using websites for personal transactions. Always check your credit card or debit bills for any odd transactions, especially if you use public WiFi a lot. Always keep your device software up-to-date especially if security updates are available. Security using the Internet has been and always will be an issue as hackers find new ways of executing attacks but as long as you stick to the rules of keeping your confidential data secure, you can lower he chances of experiencing theft of your data.
