Now that Nick has helped protect the Council’s budget it’s vital that Labour councillors stop wasting money on their pet projects and concentrate funding on the services local people value. “Obviously, the Chancellor’s statement also set some tough choices but we did not enter Government to make easy decisions. Repairing the country’s broken economy is far more important than party political games.”
COUNCILLORS FORCE LABOUR TO THINK AGAIN ON CHILDREN’S CENTRES CUTS
Opposition councillors on Sheffield City Council have forced Labour councillors to re-think their plans for local children’s centres by “callingin” the report. The move to “call-in” the decision will mean the Cabinet report will be subject to further scrutiny by backbench councillors before it can be implemented.

In particular, many voluntary and community groups, who are set to lose support funding from the Council, fear they could collapse while waiting for Government funding that will not become available till September.
The report sets out plans by Labour councillors to end the current funding system for early years services but fails to set out details of what the new system will look like, despite a review of more than twelve months. Local parents and providers protested the decision today, arguing that there has been insufficient consul-
Amidst the furore, new figures have surfaced showing that funding for early years education in Sheffield will actually increase next year, thanks to the Liberal Democrat policy of 15-hours free childcare for disadvantaged childcare. Cllr Colin Ross, Sheffield Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Children
& Young People, said: “Thanks to Nick Clegg, funding for children’s centres and early years care is actually set to increase in Sheffield next year. However, charities and community groups need help and support to adapt to the new system. “In the meantime, Labour councillors have kept local centres in the dark and have left many facing a potential cliff-edge in their funding. It’s no surprise that staff and parents are outraged – having watched Labour dither over the decision for more than a year. “It’s about time the Council worked with local children’s centres, instead of working against them.”

Jinnah - Founder of Pakistan Remembered on 136th Birth Anniversary
Pakistan paid homage on 25th December, to its founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah on his 136th birth anniversary through special events organised on the occasion. President Asif Ali Zardari, provincial governors, chief ministers, political leaders and the commoners visited his mausoleum in the port city of Karachi to pay their tributes. Zardari laid a floral wreath on his grave. "Let us re-pledge today to fight to finish the demons of extremism and militancy that seek to strike Pakistan," the president said. The newspapers, TV channels and radio stations aired special programmes all day long. On the visitors' book the president wrote: "We pledge today to uphold the democratic values for which Pakistan was created. I call upon the people to join hands in fighting the mind-set that is seeking to destroy our nationhood and democracy." Jinnah led a movement in 1947 to curve out a separate nation for the Muslims from the Indian sub-continent.

News in Brief John said: “I am delighted to be appointed Assistant Chief. This fire service quite rightly has a reputation as one of the finest in the country, and although we are facing some significant challenges, I believe we can still continue to deliver a firstclass service to the people of South Yorkshire.” South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue has appointed John Roberts as Assistant Chief Fire Officer following a comprehensive selection process. The 36 year-old, who joined SYFR in 2009 from Merseyside Fire & Rescue, replaces ACO Neil Hessell following his retirement from the service earlier this year. John was previously an Area Manager for the Sheffield and Barnsley districts, and headed the service’s Emergency Response directorate. He will take over as Assistant Chief Fire Officer on 1st January 2013.
Chair of South Yorkshire Fire Authority Cllr Jim Andrews said: “There was an extremely strong field of candidates for this post, both from within South Yorkshire and from across the country. The number of applicants reflects the esteem in which our Service is held nationally, and the fact that John was successful is testament to the pedigree of the officers we have at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue. “I would like to congratulate John on his appointment. We are all looking forward to working with him at what is an extremely important time for the service.”

Successful Police and Taxi Operation to Stop Thieves Selling Stolen Goods
A South Yorkshire Police scheme, to target offenders who handle stolen goods, especially those that try to involve taxis in criminality, have been hailed a success. Officers are now set to continue with Operation Karri, in partnership with Sheffield's taxi organisations, to provide a long-term approach to help tackle crime such as, burglary, robbery and theft from vehicles. An awareness campaign launched in August this year, is supported by marketing materials that are displayed in taxis, warning people of the risks of offering goods stolen from people’s homes and vehicles, or using taxis to inadvertently transport stolen goods.

Our message is clear, if you buy or sell stolen goods, then sooner or later, police officers will be on your doorstep.” South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Shaun Wright said:"Burglary can have a huge effect on people’s lives and this operation helps tackle the issue.
Acting Sergeant Simon Kirkham who coleads the initiative says: “The co-operation from taxi drivers has been excellent and we thank them for their support. People work very hard to enjoy expensive things such as laptops, mobile phones and satellite navigation systems. This initiative will help close the door to thieves that hope to benefit from their crime by selling other people’s stolen property.
“It’s great to see South Yorkshire Police leading the way through this initiative, with other police forces looking into how they can adopt this approach in their area. I look forward to continuing this partnership approach to tackling this problem and ensuring a safer and more secure place for the people of South Yorkshire to live.”

Cameron Rejects Calls To Make Cannabis Legal
British Prime Minister David Cameron has rejected calls to make cannabis legal, after two US states passed legislation to legalise the use of marijuana. Around 86 percent of participants in a British poll voted in favour of legalising the substance.
down, the emphasis on treatment is absolutely right - and we need to continue with that to make sure we make a difference. Also, we need to do more to keep drugs out of our prison," Cameron said. "These are the government's priorities." Cameron also rejected calls for a Royal Commission to launch an inquiry into Britain's drugs laws. US states Colorado and Washington have passed legislation to legalise the recreational use of marijuana.
A report from the Commons Home Affairs committee had urged a shake-up in the country's drug laws, which would even decriminalise heroin. "I don't support decriminalisation. Drugs use is coming

Shares For Rights People’s Rights at Work should NOT be FOR SALE Paul Blomfield MP has warned of the consequences of the decision to take away hard won rights at work from employees in exchange for shares, after voting against the proposal in the House of Commons. Mr Blomfield, who was a member of the Growth and Infrastructure Bill Committee, which gave detailed consideration to the legislation prior to the vote, criticised the Tory-Lib Dem Government for pushing through the ‘shares-for-rights’ proposal in the face of widespread opposition.
against unfair dismissal, statutory redundancy pay, the right to request flexible working and time for training, and will have to give longer notice when returning from maternity or adoption leave. Paul Blomfield MP said:
“This new scheme to get working people to sell off their rights in return for shares is wrong and will do nothing but weaken job security and employment protection. Under this new employment ployers, employees or anyone interested status, workers will lose their protection in promoting employee share ownership.
During the Government’s consultation on the issue just 5 out of 209 responses were in favour of the idea, yet despite this overwhelming opposition Ministers have pushed the measure through. “I’m also worried that this new status will be open to tax avoidance and could leave employees who accept it with large tax liabilities in national insurance and income tax. It’s a crazy situation where people could end up with less rights at work and have to pay to take up a job. From April 2013 unemployed people in Sheffield could be forced to take a job which would see them lose vital rights at work or stand to lose Jobseekers Allowance and so I would urge people to be alert to this risk”.

Polio Vaccinators Killed in Karachi
Gunmen have killed nine health workers over three days in Pakistan in attacks against a UN-backed anti-polio vaccination campaign. The deaths of six women and three men dead over three days lead the UN to suspend its campaign to vaccinate children. The Anti-polio drive was halted after the vaccinators were shot dead in three different areas of the city. Gunmen on motorbikes shot dead four female Pakistani polio vaccination workers in Karachi last month, police said, adding that three male volunteers had also been injured in the attack. The killings happened in three different areas of the sprawling port city on a nationwide
three-day drive against the disease, which is endemic in Pakistan. Sagheer Ahmed, the health minister for Sindh, said he had ordered a halt to the anti-polio drive in the city following the shootings. The World Health Organization, which has been spearheading the polio drive in Pakistan, also announced that it was stopping its campaign in Karachi. Geo TV earlier reported, a 14-year-old female volunteer was critically wounded in Peshawar. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Senior police officers blamed “militants who issued a fatwa against polio vaccination in the past” for the killings.
Pakistan is one of only three countries where the highly infectious crippling disease remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria. But efforts to tackle polio have been hampered over the years by suspicion over vaccination drives. Warlord Hafiz Gul Bahadur and the Pakistani Taliban banned polio vaccinations in the country’s tribal northwest, where polio is a particular problem, last June. Their ban—to protest against U.S. drone strikes and because they allege that the anti-polio campaign is a cover for espionage—risks the health of 240,000 children in North and South Waziristan, officials say.
UK WATCHDOG TO PROBE BBC PAYOFFS
The National Audit Office of Britain will launch an investigation after the BBC reportedly gave 200 senior managers pay-offs of more than 100,000 pounds each in the past three years, the Daily Telegraph reported. Lawmakers have said that leaving the BBC was like "winning the lottery". George Entwistle, a former directorgeneral, was given a payoff of 450,000 pounds, double the amount he was entitled to, the daily said.
Figures obtained by the daily under Freedom of Information laws showed that 14 executives were given pay-offs of more than 300,000 pounds each, while 194 executives got 100,000 pounds each.

Food Wars - Making Millions Out of Starving Millions
Banks make hundreds of millions by betting on the world’s food crisis while millions of people fight starvation. Financial investors betting on the price of food are driving up prices, putting the lives of millions at risk, campaigners claim. Barclays made about £500million over the past two years on food speculation. In Britain, the average household food bill increases by about five per cent each year. But in the developing world, where a higher proportion — up to 90 per cent — of income goes on food, rising prices can be a matter of life and death. There are many reasons for rising prices, including the weather. But food speculation is a major contributing factor, with the activity of investment banks, hedge funds and other financial players in commodity markets leading to high and unpredictable prices. Barclays is one of three key global players, along with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, speculating on food commodities, including staples such as maize and wheat. Regulations that were previously in place to protect those who grew or sell food were removed in the 1990s. With the amount of money to be made gambling on the markets, the banks, hedge fund managers and pension funds moved in. Financial speculation on food almost doubled between 2006 and 2011. In 2006,
the value of financial assets in food markets was £40billion; by 2011, it was £78billion. Financial speculators now dominate commodity markets, holding more than 60 per cent of some markets in 2011, compared with 12 per cent in 1996. While speculators do brisk business, food price rises can wreak havoc in the developing world. A short-term spike in food prices leads to a long-term crisis. It leads to massive amounts of starvation. The World Bank estimated another 44million people went hungry in the last year alone. Food price rises can also lead to riots and conflict. A number of banks, including Deutsche Bank, have started to pull out of food speculation, a result of public pressure and the warnings of global financial experts. But recent history shows that, left to their own devices, banks and financial institutions put self-interest and short-term profit before stability or greater good. At the end of August, MEPs in the European Parliament’s economics and monetary affairs committee voted to curb food price speculation. The European Parliament is putting together draft proposals against the practice as part of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, which still needs full approval from EU member states to become law. The World De-
velopment Movement and others are calling on Mr Osborne and EU leaders to limit the amount of speculation allowed in commodity markets. FACTS AND FIGURES: - Poor households in developing countries tend to spend between 50% and 90% of their incomes on food, compared to an average of 10-15% in developed countries - In the last six months of 2010 alone, more than 44m people were driven into extreme poverty as a result of rising food prices - About 1billion people worldwide don’t have enough to eat, which translates to 1 in 7 people - During the 2007-8 food price crisis, food riots took place in 31 countries -In the last five years, the amount of financial speculation on food has nearly doubled, from £40bn to £80bn - The average British household’s annual food bill was £152 higher in 2011 than in 2010 - In July 2012, world food prices jumped 10%. Maize prices hit a record level after rising 25% in that month - Between January and August this year, maize prices rose by 174% in Malawi. - 1/3 of people in sub-Saharan Africa are hungry and the figure’s growing.
EATING TOMATOES WARDS OFF DEPRESSION?
If you have been feeling downcast and gloomy, then the best thing to do overcome this state of mind is to eat tomatoes a few times a week. Researchers analysed the mental health records and diet habits of just under 1,000 men and women aged 70 years or over.
They found those eating tomatoes two to six times a week were 46 percent less likely to suffer the blues than those eating the red fruit less than once a week. and vegetables do not have the same benefits, the study Initial investigate preliminary found. reports show lycopene might also promote psychological Eating cabbage, carrots, onand well as physical health by ions and pumpkins appeared reducing oxidative stress, or to have little or no effect on damage to healthy brain cells, psychological well-being. their lives, with women affected more than men. The elderly are at high risk because of the effect on mood from declining health, bereavements and loneliness. Tomatoes are rich in anti-oxidants, particularly lycopene, that gives them their deep red colour and has been linked with reducing the risk of prostate cancer and heart attacks. British consumers get through half-a-million tonnes of tomatoes every year - the equivalent of 19 pounds per person a year. However, this is still much less than in some Mediterranean countries.

Get Ready for the Return of CITIZEN KHAN
Y
ou’ve all heard of Citizen Kane, you may remember Citizen Sid as played by Sid James of Carry On Film fame, from the sixties and you can’t forget that epitome of seventies Leftist Trotskyite Citizen Smith. Now bring on the BBCs first South Asian related sitcom Citizen Khan which is due for a return to our screens in 2013. The hilarious comedy featuring the central character Mr Khan a loud mouthed, patriarchal, self appointed community leader will be filming seven 30 minute episodes for broadcasting in the autumn. Now for most Asian folk this is a good thing. Learning to laugh at yourselves and share characters that are reality based funny with the wider communities of the land is another step towards acceptance and tolerance and understanding of our multi-cul-
tural society. On a recent trip to Spark hill, Birmingham, where the sitcom is set and external locations used, I could have sworn Id seen him, Mr Khan several times in and out of the shops, speaking to a gathering or just looking at me at the time my car passed him by.

Paul Blomfield MP Raises £1068 For Local Charity Headway Sheffield
Earlier this year to mark the first anniversary of his successful recovery from a brain tumour Paul Blomfield MP raised funds for Headway Sheffield, a local charity who support survivors of brain injuries and their families and carers. Paul has now presented a cheque to Helen Shakespeare and Barbara Harris from Headway Sheffield for the money he raised which came to the grand total of £1068.
To help raise funds Paul walked the first section of the Pennine Way in August with Tory MP Guy Opperman. Paul and Guy helped raise money together after having the shared experience of suffering a brain tumour in 2011 from which they both suc-
cessfully recovered. Paul collected sponsorship for the walk, and on the evening before the walk Paul and Guy held a fundraiser for Headway Sheffield at the Harland Cafe on John Street. Paul Blomfield MP said: "Being an MP gives me a platform to highlight good causes. In August I marked the first anniversary of my successful recovery by raising funds for Headway Sheffield. They are a local charity that provides fantastic help and support to people in Sheffield who have been affected by brain injury and their families. I’m delighted that we were able to raise the grand total of £1068 to support their work."

750,000 Britons Hit By ‘Winter Vomiting’ Virus
Over 750,000 people in Britain may have been affected by the highly contagious norovirus, popularly known as the "winter vomiting" bug, which has forced many hospitals to stop admitting new patients. More than 300 hospital wards in England and Wales have been closed to new patients since outbreak began. Cases of the virus are at a five-year high, with more than two-thirds as many people struck down this year as during the same period in 2011. In just one week, 140 of over 600 pupils at a school in London
fell sick. The new HPA (Health Protection Agency) figures show there have been
where samples have been checked since July. This is 72 percent higher than the same period in the last season when there were 1,533 cases reported. But the figure was likely to be only a fraction of the true total as most sufferers do not see their physician. Officials estimate that for every confirmed case there are around 300 more in the community. This means that around 750,000 people could be affected by the virus. Experts said the highly contagious virus arrived early this year. Infections tend to peak in Janu2,630 confirmed cases, ary and February.

He added that the Indian Public Safety Act and Armed Forces Special Powers Act gives unbridled immunity to the armed forces, leading to torture, disappearances, custodial deaths and mass graves. Barrister Majeed Tramboo, chairman of Kashmir Centre Brussels, said that he recently attended a debate in the European Parliament where the Indian Ambassador was present. Oxford MEP Graham Watson asked a simple question that if there is democracy and peace in India, then why are the Public Safety Act and AFSPA in place. He said it prohibits all judicial processes just for one motive, which is the impunity to kill. Mr Tramboo appealed to Sheffield City Council and other councils to pass a resolution for human rights and for the right of selfdetermination for the people of Jummu and Kashmir.

South Yorkshire Police Continue to Crack Down on Mobile Phone Thieves
Thieves who try to steal mobile phones are facing a further crackdown by police in Sheffield over the festive season. The Central Safer Neighbourhood Team, (SNT) will continue to work with licensees in the city centre to help raise awareness about mobile phone thefts. Officers are jointly working with plain-clothes officers and licensees to carry out specific operations in hotspot areas, aimed at catching thieves who steal mobile phones from people who are out socialising in bars and clubs and other busy places. Officers are also working with neighbouring forces to share relevant information about crime committed by travelling criminals. Inspector Darren Starkey, who leads the Central SNT said:"Mobile phone theft is still a key issue for us, particularly during the weekend night-time economy. At this time of year it’s an ideal opportunity for thieves to steal in busy crowded places, and I want to advise mobile phone owners to keep their phones safe in their pockets or handbags, and don’t leave them unattended. “I would also urge people to install a tracker app on their mobile phone, there are a number
of apps that can be downloaded, that will help the police to track a phone if stolen. We have had some excellent results through people having done this and subsequently had their phone stolen. “A 19-year-old man was recently sentenced to four months in prison for stealing 10 mobile phones from a Sheffield club in November this year. Staff at the premise played a key part in the arrest and continues to raise awareness of phone theft, through the U-Night licensee forum in the city centre.” Officers will continue to raise awareness over Christmas and into the New Year, when many people will have a new mobile as a present. Despite Challenges, Phenomenal Growth in Higher Education in Pakistan
Despite challenges there is phenomenal growth in Higher Education in Pakistan As way to benchmark, we have to remind the world that there was only on 1 University in Pakistan 1947 — that too was dysfunctional. There was no PhD program in 1947. Literacy rates in 1947 were 16%. In education, literacy rates amongst adults in 2008 was 55.5%, up from 42.7% in 1998 while the same amongst youth, i.e. people aged between 15 and 24, was 71.1%, up from 55.3% in 1998. This was achieved despite a meagre 2 to 3% of GDP being spent on education per year. The worlds most massive floods and a colossal earthquake cut deep into Pakistan’s traditional growth rate of 7%. It has now recovered, but the war next door it keeping the growth down. This year the growth rate is a bit below 5%. A new government, the withdrawal of occupation forces from Afghanistan will probably dramatically change things and put Pakistan back on track. Punjab has taken some steps to replicate Aitcheson College type of schools in the rural areas of Pakistan. It has also dispersed thousands of free laptops to the youth. Despite low investment, Pakistan has shown marked improvement in certain indica-
tors. Life expectancy has risen to over 65 years, from 62 in 1995; Fertility rates are down to 3.4 births per woman, from 5.4 in 1995; mortality rate for children under 5 years are down to 73.7 per 1,000 live births, from 109.8 in 1995. Pakistan today has more than 1000 universities of which 128 are currently recognized by the HEC. Out of 128, 70 universities are state universities whereas rest of them are private universities but are fully recognised and the facilities they offer are equal to any state university (HEC of Pakistan gives that accreditation). Recently 2 Pakistani universities have made in SUNDAY TIMES QS Top 500 Universities of the world (University of Lahore and National University of Sciences). There are nearly 60 private institutes in main cities that offer world class degrees (such as University of London External degrees, Sunderland University & many other UK universities qualifications through affiliations). According to QS World Universities Rankings 2012, 6 Universities of Pakistan have won its place in the list of top 300 Universities. Pakistani universities have produced more PhDs in the last 9 years (3280) since the
establishment of HEC than in the first 55 years (3000). Research output has grown eightfolds since 2002 (from 815 in 2002 to 6,200 in 2011) which is a remarkable achievement by any world standards. 80% of these research publications are coming from HEIs. Output has more than doubled just in the last 3 years and is expected to double again in the next 3 years. Nearly 5,000 scholars from Pakistan have been facilitated to present their research work in leading conferences of the world. The top five overall ranking is as follows: Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences Aga Khan University, Karachi University of Agriculture, Faisalabad University of The Punjab, Lahore National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University University of Health Sciences, Lahore COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore
PROPERTY CORNER THE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY DEBATE
Are House Prices Ever Going to Rise?
Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son
One of the topics that interests a lot of readers is residential property. Many times I have been asked to comment on this. It is almost as popular as talking about the weather. It is totally understandable because it is the biggest investment many people will ever make and one that you will keep your eyes on most. If my colleagues in the Residential Survey Department are asked about activity in the market then they will say they are extremely busy doing valuations for potential purchasers. If this is taken as a positive then the market can arguably be considered active. The reality is that demand for residential property has never really diminished but the price a purchaser is prepared to pay and vendor expectations are sometimes difficult to reconcile. Hence a seller may say that the market is very quiet and a purchaser will say I cannot buy a property. In terms of residential property really coming down in price over time, it is difficult to argue that is the case. Say, for instance, a three bedroomed property which was bought for £18,000 in the 1980s in the south west of Sheffield will still be on the market for around £150,000. Similar examples will also be available in other cities. Therefore, has the price really collapsed? I am sure many readers will resonate with this scenario. Arguably what has really happened is that the year on year rises in the price of your house are no longer there, giving the feeling that the market is in decline. I would argue the market is reaching a natural level. This happens in all economic cycles and is a good reminder that any investment can be volatile.
logic will tell you the price in such circumstances can arguably only go one way. The biggest hurdle in the residential property market, I am informed, is that it is difficult to obtain mortgage finance. Therefore, price in some cases is academic and coupled with uncertainty in the employment market leads to a scenario of deadlock in the market place. Therefore, in order to overcome this many people are turning to the private rented sector and the latest statistics show that the number of people renting from private landlords has doubled in the last decade. There are a number of reasons for this. Clearly this creates opportunities for private cash rich investors who are entering the market place and buying properties for rental purposes, hence the reported rises in rents. Also central government has recognised the need for more housing and has asked local authorities under the new National Planning Policy Framework to identify a five year land supply for new homes. It is clear that demand for housing, whether you wish to rent or buy, is not going to diminish. The way it is procured and delivered is what is being debated. If you are thinking of buying a property either as a investment or for your own residence, then please do get a Chartered Surveyor's report. There are many different types of surveys available so it is advisable to consult professional advisers.
In conclusion, coming back to the question are house prices ever going to rise? The answer for people is dependant upon their cirWhat is different now is that the population cumstances. But have they ever really come of the country is rising and, therefore, the down? I will leave you to reach your own demand for housing (which for most people conclusion. is a human necessity) is also rising accordingly. Supply of housing on the other hand May I take this opportunity to wish you all is in contraction because there few new a happy New Year and thank you for your houses being built. This as a supply demand encouragement and support throughout the scenario is not very helpful as economic year.
LONDON HOLDS 4,600 TONNES OF HIDDEN GOLD
Believe it or not, the Bank of England has kept hidden in secret vaults deep beneath the streets of the capital 4,600 tonnes of gold bars, probably worth a whopping 197 billion pounds. The bullion is being kept in a closely guarded location that cannot be revealed. But now, the gold has been filmed by the University of Nottingham for a new series about elements called "The Periodic Table of Videos". Chemistry professor Martyn Poliakoff obtained special permission to visit the high security vault, accompanied by a video journalist.
www.ilmnews.com
The film team had to go through a host of security checks to access the vault. All cash must be left at the door because no one is allowed to bring money inside. Britain owns around 310 tonnes of gold, and the rest is from "other organisations" who use the secure vault to store their bullion. Even when bars are sold, they are not removed from the cavernous space. Instead, each bar has its own number and that is simply transferred to the ownership of the buyer. The oldest bar in the vault has been there since 1916.

Gaza and the Pakistani Perspective
The Gaza attack ended with a truce and so did its blockade from the Egypt border at least. The images of dead innocent children and women bathed in blood kept many awake in revulsion and anger. The world saw another one of the Israeli despicable aggression with disgust. The international media reported both sides equally, giving no advantage to the oppressed, whereas the social media from all corners of the world played its role hiding no pictures of the ghastly war.
The emerging Islamic powers Turkey, Egypt, Iran and Tunisia sang a new song of harmony in Gaza threatening Israel with words much more devastating than the Israeli bombs fired from land, water and air. The foreign policy of these countries went as far as sending their high profile leaders such as Egyptian PM Qandil, Turkish FM Davutoğlu and Tunisian FM into Gaza which was at that time being bombarded heavily with missiles and rockets from all sides. Davutoğlu’s tears delivered the strongest of the messages, scaring the hell out of the designers of the carnage. The leadership of these Nations while issuing their statements gave no edge to Israel and USA as the previous regimes had been accustomed to, granting Hamas a ceasefire and an unprecedented political victory, despite its heavy loss of lives and property. The peace could be temporary but the new political portrait of Arab Spring exhibited determination and it may have the potential to bring change. While all of this was happening in Gaza the Muslims of the world fought another war in the social media. The mainstream media gave equal time to the ones who bluntly justified the indiscriminate violence and aggression of Israel, whereas the oppressed and their advocates were blatantly condemned. The bearded scholars of a newly emerged moderate Islam equally put the blame on the Israel and
Hamas. This did not much happen almost twenty years back probably because most of the mainstream media was not commercialized or powered by Western masters and political parties that now promote so called moderation or neutrality theory. Back then either the media was owned and “controlled” by the state (which was equally horrific) or just free newspaper journalists

Q. What is damp proofing – why it is important? A. Damp proofing works as a long term prevention to moisture decay. When it comes to walls and foundations, damp proofing prevents moisture and water passing through into interior spaces and can therefore prevent timber decay and structural damage such as dry rot, wet rot and rising damp. Q . Please advise if the middle wall between kitchen and living room has been removed , what document we should expect from the seller solicitors? A. You will need building regulations approval but not planning permission. You should also have the letter form the structural engineer that this work has been done according to structural calculations of the building. If the vendor does not have building regulations approval then you can ask for a indemnity policy. This work should be checked by the builder and a structural engineer to confirm that its not dangerous.
In the Loving Memory of Pop Diva NAZIA HASSAN One of the commonest conversations overheard in the public domain is how advancement of technology breeds a lack of respect for the ‘Old is Gold’ school of thought. The expansion of modern technology has arguably reached such heights that ‘out with old and in with the new’ appears to have secured some form conformity with modern society. The replacement of the once cherished audiocassette tapes is by far one of the best examples. In 1953 Elvis Presley recorded his first two songs; by 1956 he became the undisputed King of Music. During the same period The Beatles flooded the market with more than 100 million copies of their albums, and ignited a universal and humongous thirst for music. This thirst was then quenched by the arrival of the audiocassette tape. The audiocassette tape purported to be a twentieth century answer for the1960’s music lovers. Despite reaching their peak of popularity in the second half of the 1980s, and being responsible for revolutionising and internationalising the music industry, the onset of the 21st century witnessed a collective decision to cease all mass production of cassettes. Thus what was once deemed a technological breakthrough in the second half of the past century became nothing more than a sugary memory of one’s youth. Yet despite its demise in the face of modern technology the audiocassette tape hasn’t thankfully been abandoned to lie lifelessly on skips or disrespectfully thrown on bonfires. Rather we have witnessed the audiocassette tape finding their respectful places amongst one’s most cherished memorabilia. This level of respect apportioned to the compact audiocassettes, irrespective of its obsolete use in the face of the current modernity is a clear indication of the audiocassette tape omnipresent achievements. Today a growing number of fraternities are drawing strong comparisons between the life of the audio-cassette and that of the legendary Pop Diva Nazia Hassan . Nazia Hassan. (an iconic Pakistani pop singer ) was the first Pakistani to win a Filmfare Award and remains the youngest winner of a Film-fare Award in the category of Best Female Playback Singer. Nazia Hassan was born in the year 1965 during the audiocassette tape boom period. Tellingly she grew up in era where the ambiance comprised of a strong threat of music revolution brought on by the inception of the audio cassette

tape. Critics today argue therein lies the strong proliferation grounds for her success. The audio-cassette tape boom period provided a concrete ground for Nazia Hassan to launch her Pop Career. At a tender age of 15 Nazia Hassan was officially first exposed to the entertainment auditorium. Singing during the late 1970s, her professional career started when she bestowed her vocals for the song Aap Jaisa Koi from the 1980 Bollywood film Qurbani.
more sinister, namely corrupting the youth. In commonality audiocassette tapes and Nazia Hassan both experienced a bitter reception. Meanwhile Nazia Hassan was responsible for creating her own splashes. She paved the path for women icons. She created empathy for social care. Enlarged the music circle, challenged the dogma surrounding the then subcontinent pop scene. Inspired thousands to join her universally, beneficial music voyage. (Thus, Pakistan’s vibrant contemporary music scene will always remain in debt to Nazia Hassan’s redefinition of pop).
Indeed critics argue by the time the late Benazir Bhutto sanctioned a state sponsored a concert (1989), Nazia’s glorious voice and style of music had already cast a spell on the hearts and minds of millions. In the Subcontinent the curtains of dictatorship were finally pulled down, Nazia had laid the craze for pop music among the youth. He underlined that the Arab world is undergoing transition and has generated democratic impulses for the people in the region and beyond.
News in Brief More Women to join Saudi Parliament
For the first time, women will represent 10 percent of the 150 seats of the Saudi Shura, or consultative council, in the coming legislative term. The remarkable thing about the new council - the Saudi version of parliament - is that in Saudi Arabia's history women are joining as Shura members for the first time, sources told Elaph e-paper.
Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud had announced in December 2011 that the next Shura Council would include women. The Shura Council of Saudi Arabia is the formal advisory body of Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy. Though it cannot pass or enforce laws, a power reserved for the king, the assembly has limited powers in government, including the power to propose laws to the king. It has 150 members, all of whom are appointed by the king.

IQ Tests Are ‘Meaningless And Too Simplistic’ Claim Researchers Researchers say findings are a 'wake up call' for anyone using current tests. It will come as a relief to those who failed to shine when taking an IQ test. After conducting the largest ever study of intelligence, researchers have found that far from indicating how clever you are, IQ testing is actually rather ‘meaningless’. In a bid to investigate the value of IQ, scientists asked more than 100,000 participants to complete 12 tests that required planning, reasoning, memory and attention. They also filled in a survey on their background. They discovered that far from being down to one single factor, what is commonly regarded as intelligence is influenced by three different elements - short-term memory, reasoning, and verbal ability. But being good at one
of these factors does not mean you are going to be equally gifted at the other two. Scientists from Canada’s Western University in Ontario, also scanned some of the participants’ brains while they undertook the tests. They found that different parts of the brain were activated when they were tested on each of the three factors. Traditional IQ tests are ‘too simplistic’, according to the research, which found that what makes someone intelligent is too complex to boil down to a single exam. IQ, which stands for Intelligence Quotient, is an attempt to measure how smart an individual is. The average IQ is 100. Mensa, the high IQ society, only accepts individuals who score more than 148, putting them in the top two per cent of the population.

Could we refreeze the Arctic?
We could refreeze the Arctic, and it wouldn't even cost that much, say scientists. Two studies explore the possibility that a solution could be found to the problem of global warming melting the ice caps on the North Pole. The scientist who is lead author of both the studies claims that "any significant nation" could find the resources to carry out the operation. The only significant question, he says, is whether we should. The amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean shrank to an all time low in September, with the total area covered now half what it was in the eight-
ies. The really hard questions here aren't mostly technical. They're questions about what kind of planet we want and who we are. Professor Keith used climate models to suggest that injecting reflective particles into the atmosphere could reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth, engineering a regional effect that could bring ice back to the Arctic. His paper claims that by reducing the penetration of sunlight by just 0.5 percent could be possible to restore the sea-ice around the North Pole back to pre-industrial era levels.

Events of 1971 All nations go through ups and downs they have glorious periods and tragic ones. People usually ignore and forget the tragic ones while celebrating the good events with great pomp. Celebration of such events impresses a nation’s achievements on the minds of its people and generates self-confidence in them. Tragic events are commemorated to remember past mistakes and the reasons for these mishaps. Unfortunately, Islamic history is full of tragic events, usually totally forgotten and ignored by subsequent rulers, to say nothing of learning a lesson from them. These rulers seemed intoxicated by wealth and power and lived luxurious lives. We have the examples of Umayyad, Abbasid, Khwarizmi, Mongol, Mughal and Turkish dynasties, and the Islamic dynasty in Spain, etc. However, such episodes are not limited to Islamic countries. Christian dynasties have also had their fair share. Hitler ignored the fate that had befallen Napoleon after Napoleon’s misadventure of attacking Russia, and he repeated the same mistake. This proved to be the beginning of his disastrous and ignominious end. Had Hitler not attacked Russia, the history of Europe would probably have been quite different and the United Kingdom would have been flattened. Fate has its own way and the Almighty usually seals the hearts and brains of the wrongdoers before destroying them. It is most unfortunate that we in Pakistan have also not learnt any lessons from our past tragic mistakes. The breaking up of Pakistan on December 16, 1971, was one such recent event. Millions of Pakistanis are fully aware of the reasons behind that tragedy, but it seems that our rulers and the establishment are oblivious to these, despite the fact that it was such a traumatic experience. The country was broken up, hundreds of thousands of people were killed, women were raped and almost 92,000 army and other personnel were taken prisoner. The way they were treated by the victorious In-
dian army was heart-breaking and I could not control my tears at seeing these events on TV. The public in Pakistan was not shown those scenes, but the western media exposed everything. As is usual here, nobody was held responsible for such a big and tragic disaster. Bhutto appointed the Justice Hamoodur Rahman Commission, which was supposed to identify the culprits. The report was prepared, but the contents were never made public.
