Petition Against Trump’s State Visit Passes 1.7m Signatures

A petition to block Donald Trump from a state visit to the UK has passed well over 1.7 million signatures, with ongoing nationwide protests. The petition says: “Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.” The petition was started in November but gained traction very recently.

Protests have taken place across British cities as a show of outrage against Mr Trump’s 90-day travel ban on people from seven mainly Muslim countries. The “extreme vetting” is targeting migrants and visitors to the US from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The demonstrations took place in London, Manchester, Bristol, Brighton, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Swansea. In spite of the petition and the protests, Downing Street has insisted Mr Trump’s state visit will go ahead.

“An invitation has been extended and accepted”, said a Downing Street spokesperson.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Sheffield to protest against Donald Trump, following his travel ban and his anti-mulim agenda. Anti-Trump Demonstrations up and down the country show the depth of anger and frustration felt by ordinary people in the UK.

Malala Yousafzai, famous woman’s rights activist and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate, has said that she is “heartbroken” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to ban refugees from entering the United States. Yousafzai is only one of many individuals, organizations and communities who have protested President Trump’s decision since he signed the order on Friday, January 8. The decision includes temporarily barring immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim majority countries and indefinitely barring refugees from Syria. Sheffield Is Named As UK’s Friendliest City

Sheffield has been named as Britain's friendliest city in a new survey. The city beat off the likes of Norwich, Birmingham and Nottingham to claim top spot in the study, organised by the Co-op. The study found that Steel City folk are the tops when it comes to lending a helping hand with neighbours.

However, the research found that one in four people over the age of 45 does not have a neighbour they can call on for a favour or help. A survey of 2,000 adults found that a parcel delivery is now the main reason someone calls on the person living next door to ask a favour.

Sheffield was said to be the most neighbourly city, followed by Norwich,Nottingham, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

Having neighbours that you can turn to, whether that's to take in a parcel, borrow some milk or just for a chat, is so important. We all want to feel part of a community and know that someone is there to help a hand. This research shows that we have much to do to improve our neighbourly spirit and foster that sense of community."

More Council Homes Set To Be Built In Sheffield The City Council’s plans to provide an extra 1,000 council homes are still ongoing but today, the authority is revealing that it intends to build more of these than originally thought.

These will include independent living schemes for older people and the council also hopes to provide extra supported housing for people with learning disabilities. The extra homes will be provided by 2020/21.

Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Housing at Sheffield City Council, said: “Increasing social housing is still a priority as the need for good affordable housing has never been greater.

“We acquire more council homes by either buying existing properties or building them ourselves.

Building them gives us more control though and helps us get the properties we need. That’s why we’re maintaining our plans to provide an extra 1,000 council homes in Sheffield but we will be building more of them ourselves. This includes supported housing to help people live independently, as well as more family homes.”

There are around 40,000 council homes in Sheffield but this figure is reducing as properties are sold un-

der the national Right to Buy scheme.

The authority is almost one third of the way toward its target of 1,000 extra council homes. Since 2015/16 it has bought an extra 285 properties and is building 89 new council homes which are almost complete. By the end of the programme, if the authority is successful in accessing national house building funding, it is estimated that the council will have built around 450 of this total.

The authority’s council housing plan also sets out plans to: • Reduce the community heating charge by 10 per cent for tenants who receive metered heating.

• Set a single flat rate for garage rent instead of the current system of different prices across the city.

• Prepare for new housing policies introduced nationally and to support tenants who are affected by them.

Investments to council housing are funded by the rent paid by council tenants. Over the next year work will continue to improve people’s kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors, roofs, boilers and communal areas which are a priority for tenants.

Plans To Maintain Council Tax Support Scheme A scheme to help people struggling to pay their council tax will be maintained by Sheffield City Council despite the authority facing huge budget pressures.

The council is announcing that it plans to carry on offering a discount of up to 77 per cent for working age people on low incomes and up to 100 per cent for pensioners who qualify for its Council Tax Support Scheme.

Last year the authority helped just over 52,000 households through the scheme. Altogether Sheffield City Council bills around £220m in council tax each year.

Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “We all know that the government cuts are hitting people hard.

That’s why we set up our council tax support scheme, to help people on low incomes manage when the government abolished council tax benefit.

“Despite continued austerity, we will never balance our books on the back of the poor and I am proud that we are not planning any

cuts to this scheme. It is important to protect people who need it the most. We know lots of people are struggling to pay their bills and that in-work poverty is a bigger issue than ever.

We also know that if we gave less support more people would fall into arrears and that wouldn’t help them, or the council’s finances.”

Sheffield City Council asks people to contact them if they are struggling to pay their council tax. Councillor Curran added: “We have a duty to collect council tax and will use the powers available to us to enforce non-payment. But we ask people to contact us as soon as possible if they’re struggling to pay. We will give advice and help them as much as we can, and it’s always better to get in touch sooner rather than later.”

The council gives extra help under a Council Tax Hardship Scheme that it is also planning to maintain. Funding for this will be determined when the council’s budget for 2017/2018 is agreed in March.

New Tinsley Library Opens A new library has opened in Tinsley and will be staffed by volunteers and hosted by the Tinsley Forum.

People will be able to check out books for adults and children, read newspapers and request books from Sheffield City Council’s library catalogue at the new branch based at the Tinsley Forum in Bawtry Road.

The library lovers of Tinsley have plans to expand the service over time which will initially open on Monday mornings and afternoons, and Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Sheffield City Council is helping support the volunteers with the new service which is temporary for now, as work is needed to expand into a bigger library space and install council computers for the public to use. The authority hopes to enable the volunteers to have permanent facilities from the Tinsley Forum’s building later this year.

Library volunteer Nusrat Rashid said: “The library will help bring the community together and provide a welcome space for everyone to enjoy!”

The old library in Tinsley closed last year when Sheffield City Council’s lease on the previous building expired. The authority has been working with the Tinsley Forum since then, which has provided a library book drop-off and pick-up point.

Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Libraries, said: “I’m delighted that there’s a new library in Tinsley and want to thank everyone for their hard work in making this happen.

“Many more exciting things are planned as is happening across all city libraries, so please pop in and see what’s on offer.”

There are 28 libraries in Sheffield including the Central Lending Library. Sixteen branches, including Tinsley, are run by volunteers.

Speeding Laws Are Changing And They’re Getting Tougher Drivers responsible for the most serious speeding offences are set to face harsher penalties under new sentencing guidelines for magistrates.

Fines for motorists caught going well above the speed limit will start from 150 per cent of their weekly income rather than the existing level of 100 per cent. It means, for example, someone who is sentenced for driving at 101mph or faster in a 70mph zone will now be dealt with in a more severe bracket. Anyone who breaks the limit excessively is a danger to every other road user and is unnecessarily putting lives at risk.

The Sentencing Council said the move aims to ensure there is a ‘clear increase in penalty as the seriousness of offending increases’.

It follows responses to a consultation arguing previous guidelines did not properly take into account the increase in potential harm that can

result as speed above the limit rises.

Speeding is one of a number of areas covered in new sentencing guidelines for magistrates’ courts in England and Wales. In another change conditional discharges will be included as a sentencing option in the least serious cases of TV licence payment evasion.

The new guidelines, which also cover railway fare evasion, truancy and being drunk and disorderly, aim to reflect changes in the law since they were last updated in 2008.

The Sentencing Council said the new guidelines are not intended to result in significant differences to current sentencing practice but will bring changes to sentencing for some specific offences. The guidelines will be used to sentence adult offenders in all magistrates’ courts in England and Wales from April 24.

£150,000 To Boost Cultural Tourism In Sheffield

900,000 UK Citizens Are Living In Other European Union Countries Around 900,000 UK citizens are living in other European Union countries, according to new analysis by official statisticians. The estimate is lower than the 1.2 million figure that has been widely used in discussions about expats living on the continent following the Brexit vote. Demographers said the latest number is based on citizenship, whereas other tallies focused on country of birth.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) used census figures from 2010 and 2011 to examine the number of UK citizens who have lived for at least a year in other EU member states.

Its analysis put the total size of the group at 890,299, with the report also showing that: :: The largest age group is 30 to 49 years, accounting for 280,000 people; :: Spain is host to the largest number of British citizens living in the EU, at 308,805, followed by France (157,062), Ireland (112,090) and Germany (96,200); :: Just over a third (101,045) of British citizens living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and this is also the largest age group in Malta (2,157);

:: Most British citizens living in Cyprus, Portugal, Greece, France and Bulgaria are aged 50 or over; :: The highest concentration of British citizens is in Cyprus, with 2.9% of the population holding only British citizenship; :: British citizens make up 0.2% of the population of the EU (excluding the UK) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states - Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland - combined.

Separate data which have been widely quoted as giving an estimate of 1.22 million UK-born migrants in other EU member states apply the country of birth definition for 25 out of 27 nations, according to the report. It said these figures will include many Irish and Polish citizens while not counting British citizens born overseas.

The status of expats in Europe has fallen under the spotlight in the wake of the referendum vote.

Ministers have said they want to protect the status of EU nationals already living in Britain, and that the only circumstances in which that would not be possible is if a reciprocal approach is not adopted for British citizens in European member states.

Arts Council England has granted the city £150,000 to try to attract visitors from around the UK and abroad. A new joint marketing campaign will be set up around the themes of festivals, modernist architecture, music and beer, plus major events. Three local artists will also be commissioned to create new works as part of the project.

Poorer Families Worse Off By 2020 As Prices Outstrip Welfare Rises Poor families face being left £2,800 a year worse off by 2020 as living costs outstrip crucial welfare increases, charities have warned.

Prices are expected to have gone up by 35% over the course of the decade but child benefit will have risen by just 2%, according to End Child Poverty coalition research.

Struggling families also find it harder to make ends meet because they are being hit by a "poverty premium" that leaves them paying more for goods and services. Forecasts suggest that child poverty rates will rise significantly in coming years. Low income families really are feeling the pinch - trapped between support being eroded by the cost of living rising much faster than benefit rates, and facing some of the highest prices on basic essentials as a result of a poverty premium on key goods and services.

A typical unemployed single parent with two children received benefits of around £198 a week before housing in April 2010, according to the Feeling the Pinch report.

To keep up with increased living costs, the payments, such as child benefits, tax credits and Jobseeker's Allowance, would need to reach around £267 a week by 2020 but are expected to only reach £214, it added.

The £53 a week loss amounts to a hit of nearly £2,756 a year.

The poorest families are hit by a poverty premium that means they are forced to pay more for the same items as those who are wealthier, the coalition said. Its research found higher loan rates, the cost of renting white goods instead of buying outright, steeper insurance premiums, cheque cashing costs and less favourable energy bills could leave poor families paying £1,700 more.

The coalition called on the Government to stop the four-year freeze on children's benefits and said it must increase housing support in line with local rents. It also urged the Government to set up a commission to find ways to stop the poorest customers paying the highest prices for goods and services.

A Government spokesman said: "Our welfare reforms are incentivising work and restoring fairness to the system. Tackling poverty and delivering real social reform is a priority, and we are helping people to keep more of what they earn, and supporting households with the cost of living.

"We are increasing the National Living Wage, have frozen fuel duty for seven years running and our increases to the personal allowance have reduced tax bills for some of the lowest earners by £1,000 a year."

Men Paying £101 More For Car Insurance According to a comparison site’s research, male motorists pay £101 more a year for their car insurance than women.

Confused.com found that the average annual premium for men was £812 for comprehensive car insurance in the last quarter of 2016, whereas women’s was only £711. It added that the gap had widened since 2015.

UK law mandates that insurance firms not consider gender when considering setting premiums, however they are entitled to considering wider risks.

So while insurers are doing all they can to control costs, these pressures show how important it is that the government’s latest proposals to tackle low value whiplash style claims are implemented fully and as quickly as possible, and that there is no rise in Insurance Premium Tax.

Pakistan Consul Generals Visit To Sheffield The newly posted Consul General of Bradford, Ahmed Amjad Ali addressed the audience in Sheffield at the ILM News 7th anniversary celebration. He spoke about integration with mainstream British society being beneficial for British Pakistanis and about creating unity amongst the community just like other successful communities around Britain and the world.

Referring to some recent reports about different communities in the UK, the Consul General said although the Pakistani community is playing an important role in the socio-cultural and economic fields in the UK, there is still a need to enhance the level of integration with the mainstream British society so that our community, especially the youth, could take advantage of the educational and economic opportunities available in this country. He clarified his point saying that integration means adopting good things from the British culture and society like quality education and rule of law, while retaining our own identity and cultural ethos like beliefs, family system and care for the elderly.

The Consul General marvelled at the already positive achievements from members of the Pakistani community. He was especially proud

of the achievements of children. Like the teenager who won a national essay competition at the European Youth Parliament, and an 11 year old Pakistani child from Sheffield who is a big hit playing the guitar on YouTube.

The Consul General took the opportunity to inform the audience about the work of the Pakistan Consulate in Bradford. He explained how there have been an number of improvements in consular services in Bradford; including a new emergency out of hours number for urgent visas requests, improvements in accessibility and services for disabled and senior citizens, and information on new monthly surgeries for the Sheffield and Rotherham community. The new monthly surgery will be held alternatively every month in Sheffield and Rotherham. The appointment only sessions will be for NICOP, Attestation, and Visa applications. These surgeries will be held on the 28th of every month and further details and booking details can be found online.

He concluded his speech by reassuring the audience that the Pakistani Consulate Bradford, despite its challenges is improving all around in a positive direction.

Citizens Advice Sheffield helped one in every 20 adults in Sheffield during 2016. 21,500 people asked for their help with 65,000 issues during the year.

“How we help people, published today, describes how we have helped thousands of people in the city with the problems they face” said Andy Buck, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Sheffield.

“42% of the people we helped were ill or disabled. Three quarters were working age adults.

Most live in the poorer parts of the city. All of them were grappling with problems that for many seemed intractable.

“At least one in every five people we helped had difficulty affording fuel, food or housing. 42% of the issues about which people asked for help were to do with welfare benefits, and 30% were about debts.

“Three in four of the people we helped said we made a positive difference to their lives. With our help, people secured at least £6.8 million in welfare benefits, and resolved debts of at least £4.3 million.”

The City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Citizens Advice Sheffield for the next three years.”

Pothole Bill Set To Spiral To £14bn The country is approaching “a tipping point” in tackling the blight of potholes with the repair bill set to soar to £14bn, it has been warned. The looming price tag far outstrips the entire annual amount councils have to spend on highways and transport, which stood at £4.4bn in England last year.

To deal with the problem, the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils across England and Wales, has urged the Government to plough a further £1bn a year into roads maintenance. The organisation said this

could be achieved by investing 2p per litre of existing fuel duty without increasing prices at the pump.

LGA analysis shows the bill for repairing roads in England and Wales could reach £14bn within two years. “It is wrong and unfair that the Government allocates almost 40 times more to maintaining national roads, which it controls, compared with local roads, which are overseen by councils. It is paramount this funding discrepancy is swiftly plugged.”

Include Airline Passengers’ Weight In Baggage Allowances Nearly 40% of British travellers believe airlines should take passengers’ weight into consideration when setting luggage allowances, a survey suggests. According to the poll, 18% of adults feel “angry” that heavier people are entitled to the same baggage limit. Many of those questioned said making sure that their suitcase did not exceed an airline’s weight restrictions was the most stressful element of plane travel. But women appeared to be more concerned about following the rules than men.

Travel company eDreams say it is clear that many travellers find packing to meet a specific weight restriction a huge amount of stress, which has in turn caused a substantial amount of resentment between passengers.

On some airlines, exceeding a baggage allowance can lead to eye-watering charges. Figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre show 62% of adults in England are currently obese or overweight.

I will endeavour to put across my thoughts in this article through my experience of working in the property market.

It is accepted that over the years, the number of empty retail units has seen a significant increase, just look around your own town and city the evidence is there for all to see. One of the main reasons given for this is the global recession we have seen throughout the world, where many small businesses have closed, this phenomenon is more prevalent in some areas than others. Another reason given is that competition from large retailers has been a contributing factor to such closures. I say a contributing factor because I do not feel that this is as significant factor, as history has shown independent retail traders do have an attraction, just look at London, and many other cities across the world where such retailers are doing well. There is a strong argument that they can co exist with the large retailers.

There are many examples of such areas in Sheffield, look at Ecclesall Road, Sharrow Vale Road, London Road, Hillsborough and many more. I have recently been involved in letting of properties for more traditional users, your local butcher, baker, fishmonger etc. It seems as though customers like buying from a local shops and the old tradition of shopping is going through a renaissance.

The traditions of the ancient bazaars or local shopping/socialising areas is as old as mankind, yes there is a strong electronic social media scene but the traditions of meeting in the High Street, Local Shopping Centre or Bazaar is well and truly alive. If you visit Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, India and I could list a whole host of countries you will see the Bazaars or local shopping centres are well and truly alive.

Coming back to this country you can see there are many coffee shops and cafés which are dotted around any retail parade and the

numbers are rising whether they are national names or local independents. In turn this encourages other operators to return to the retail parade, in some areas you are seeing art galleries, jewellers, craft shops, dress shops, antique shops and many more returning to the street scene.

Deaf Patients To Benefit From Video Interpreting Service

New Islamabad Airport On Track For Completion

A remote British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting service that will be available to deaf patients whenever they need it is being rolled-out at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Trust will soon be the first in the country to use the service on a routine basis, in the same way that telephone interpreting is used for spoken languages.

The service, provided by SignLive, works through a web browser on a computer or a downloaded app on a smart device and allows a direct connection to a qualified BSL interpreter.

It is readily available as and when it is needed, with connection to an interpreter taking around only 40 seconds. This means that deaf patients will have speedy access to a signer to help them communicate with hospital staff. It also eliminates the need to book interpreters in advance and means that patient appointments will not have to be cancelled where a face-to-face interpreter isn’t available. It is also cost effective, with payment by the minute rather than payment for a pre-defined time period.

Sue Butler, Head of Patient Partnership, said: “We are always striving to improve patient access and experience across the Trust. “This service provides access to qualified, professional BSL interpreters quickly and is particularly helpful when fast access to an interpreter is required to communicate with deaf patients in emergencies.

“It is also fantastic in many other hospital settings and eliminates the need to book face-to-face interpreters in advance.”

The new Islamabad International Airport will be inaugurated on 14 August. It will be the first greenfield airport in Pakistan and first to handle large planes. Speed Camera Rakes In £1.5million In Six Months Britain’s most profitable speed camera has been revealed – and it’s managed to haul in £1.5 million in just over six months – the same amount as a ‘successful medium sized business’. The camera, which is suited on a stretch of the North Circular Road in Ealing, west London, was responsible for a third of all tickets issued in the capital, according to the Metropolitan Police. It snared motorists who broke a temporary 30mph speed limit that was installed on the dual carriageway, despite most of the North Circular having a 40 or 50 mph speed limit.

Council Launches Opportunity For City-Wide Free Wi-Fi Service Sheffield City Council has announced it will offer a public access Wi-Fi service across the city’s Business Improvement District (BID) – at no cost to visitors who use it.

The service will make Sheffield city centre a more vibrant and attractive place for residents, visitors, businesses and shoppers – helping the economy to grow and supporting initiatives such as Alive After Five.

The implementation of free, public-access Wi-Fi is central to the BID’s plans for encouraging visitors, residents and employees to spend more time in the city.

Councillor Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business and economy at Sheffield City Council, said: “This offer has the potential to place Sheffield amongst the best connected cities in the country.

“Our ambition is to create the conditions that allow a super-fast, digitally-connected and vibrant city to thrive. Our economy will benefit and Sheffield will become more connected for people using the city centre.

Britain Struck By Biggest Earthquake In A Decade An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 struck off the Scarborough coast last month, according to the British Geological Survey. It was centred 93 miles east of the town at a depth of 11 miles and hit at around 6.50pm. According to local media, there were no reports of the quake being felt on land. Social media users were not too worried, with some posting mocked-up photos of overturned wheelie bins and broken garden gnomes. The V-22 Osprey, a military aircraft used to carry Air Force special operations forces and Marines into hard-to-reach places, was not an easy plane to design. It cost about $54 billion to develop the aircraft, and each one costs $70 million.

So, Uber is mostly skipping the car part, instead making a plane that takes off and lands like a helicopter, and designing it to fly from helipads. Helicopters--an existing, proven technology--already meet most of the needs for Uber’s planned flying machine, but they’re too slow for the commuter flights of 20 minutes. Uber wants an aircraft that can fly between 150 mph and 200 mph. which is up to the same speed as some military aircrafts, but within the range of VTOL aircraft--which is why Uber wants it to switch to flying like a plane once it's off the ground. On top of all that, the company wants the vehicle to be all-electric, to keep down noise and emissions.

The company expects it can price the flights competitively, with an initial $129 VTOL fee compared to an UberX trip between the same two points costing $111.

The pool of possible Uber drivers is not quite as large as everyone with a driver’s license and a car, but it’s pretty close, so Uber’s not hunting for drivers. But certified pilots, and especially pilots certified to fly a brand-new VTOL aircraft, will likely not come cheap.

And, given the FAA’s reluctance to reduce piloting requirements for unmanned vehicles, it will be hard for Uber to automate its VTOL passenger craft. New 12-Sided Pound Coin To Enter Circulation In March The new 12-sided £1 coin will enter circulation on 28 March, the government has said.

The round £1 will be legal tender alongside the new, more-secure coin until 15 October. The public are being urged to use their current £1 coins or bank them before they lose their legal tender status.

The new style was announced in the 2014 budget and has been billed by the Royal Mint as "the most secure coin in the world".

Its introduction will come as a new set of coin designs are also brought into circulation, celebrating the achievements of Jane Austen and Sir Isaac Newton.

Sky Scraps Satellite Dishes Pay-TV giant Sky will make all its television channels available without the need for a satellite dish for the first time as it looks to stop customers quitting the group. The group announced it would launch a broadband service in the UK next year to give millions of customers who cannot or do not want to install a satellite dish access to its full TV service. It comes as Sky revealed surging numbers of UK customers leaving amid competition from rivals such as BT, while half-year results showed a 9% fall in earnings after spiralling football rights costs.

The group said it signed up 205,000 new customers in the UK and Ireland in its first half, but its so-called rate of churn – customers quit-

ting the group – surged to 11.6% from 10.2% a year earlier. Sky blamed this on a rising number of broadband customers, who it said tend to switch around more, as well as tough promotional competition from rivals. It has come under pressure amid competition from the likes of BT and Netflix. Sky also plans to launch a loyalty programme in the UK this year to help retain customers, following the success of a similar scheme in Italy. Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive of Sky, said: “In a year in which we are absorbing significantly higher programming costs, as a result of the step up in Premier League costs, our financial performance has been good.”

Call It Fate Dr A Q Khan

Sometimes fate plays an important part in one’s life and so it was with me as well. As is generally known, I belong to Bhopal, one of the most beautiful places in Central India. To us, it was paradise on earth. After passing high school in 1952, I studied at Hamidia College for three months and then left for Pakistan via Khokhrapar.

Since all admissions at colleges in Karachi had already been completed, I could not find a place that year, so I turned my focus to shorthand and typing instead. The latter became useful to me in later years, but I never practised shorthand.

After completing a BSc degree from DJ Sindh Government Science College, I joined government service as inspector of weights and measures. It was a somewhat interesting and easy job and I came to know the whole of Karachi and its suburbs well. In 1961, I decided to go to the Technical University of Berlin for higher technical education. All I had in my pocket was an admission letter, a oneway ticket and 30 pounds sterling. I first went to Dusseldorf, where I had secured a place to complete the required six-month technical training to start my course and to learn German. It was the most difficult time of my life. The weather was cold and dark. There were no English newspapers available. No English programmes on TV. Films were dubbed in German and hardly anyone spoke English. There seemed no other Pakistanis around either.

Within a few weeks, I was terribly homesick. Every Sunday, I would trek out to the railway station to buy the Sunday Observer, which was published from London. The station was comparatively lively. The English newspaper would keep me occupied in the evenings for the whole week when I was not at my German lessons.

During this time, my ex-colleagues in Karachi were continuously

asking me to come back. One day, I saw a job advertised for a science teacher at a grammar school in Benin City, Nigeria. I immediately sent off an application with copies of my certificates and received an appointment letter after just two weeks. The salary was good and the job came with a furnished bungalow and an advance to purchase a car. I was permitted two months’ leave to go home every two years and my travel expenses would be covered.

My younger sister, who was very close to me, suggested it would be better not to return to Pakistan without assessing the possibilities that a further degree would offer. She was not averse to the idea of me going out to Nigeria. In those days, many Pakistanis were going to Nigeria and Ghana – since these were English-speaking countries who liked Pakistanis.

Before departing for Nigeria, I thought I should at least visit the university where I had planned to study and meet Dr H Stark, who was the head of foreign student affairs and a professor of Mathematics. I had already exchanged many letters with him – first from Pakistan and later while doing my practical training in Dusseldorf.

I had taken a white marble model of the Taj Mahal and an onyx plate with semi-precious stones in the shape of flowers as gifts for him. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to consider that it was Saturday and the university was closed. I went to his residence and was informed by a woman at his residence – probably his wife – that he was out of town. I gave her the gifts I had brought for him along with a note explaining why I was about to leave for Nigeria.

After four or five days, I received a letter from Professor Stark (I still have that letter) requesting me to meet him at Bonn airport after three days as he was going to Paris and had two hours there to change planes. I was to go to the Lufthansa counter and have his name called over the announcement system. Immediately after the announcement was made, he appeared by my side, took me

After he heard what I had to say, the professor said: “Mr Khan, you have come a long way to study in Berlin after a long correspondence with me. The decision is yours, but mark my words: once you are living as a teacher, you will retire as a teacher and die as a teacher. Once you leave Germany, you will repent all your life that you came all the way to the river and then did not drink the water.

There are many foreign students in Berlin (about 25 percent of the total number of students) and once you join us, you will forget this tough time. You show me progress in your studies and I will give you a scholarship.”

He sounded so convincing, genuine, interested and sympathetic that I promised him I would write to the Nigerians school, decline the job offer and join the university after a month when the new semester began. I could see that he was genuinely pleased. We shook hands and Dr Stark said he would see me soon in Berlin.

This visit and the genuine interest shown by Professor Stark changed the course my life was to take. I became convinced that this was the right course to take and was mentally prepared to opt for my studies. Imagine what would have happened if he had not written back to me, taken the trouble to meet me at Bonn airport or not been so warm and genuine.

I did come across foreign students in Berlin and lived in a hostel with many of them. They were mostly from India and Iran. There was only one other Pakistani, Akhtar Ali, who studied electronics and we soon became good friends. He has now retired and lives in California with his family. We still keep in touch regularly.

Pakistan Super League PSL 2017 The PSL Pakistan Super League 2017 is scheduled to begin on Feb 9th 2017 in UAE. The opening ceremony and the first match will be played on Feb 9th with the final taking place in Lahore on March 7. The number of matches has been increased from 16 to 18.

Shaggy, Ali Zafar and Shehzad Roy are slated to perform at the opening ceremony hosted by Fahad Mustafa. The organizers are planning to make this a grand opening that will be remembered for a long time.

The PSL Draft for the second edition of the tournament was held on October 19 and all five teams announced their squads with most teams consisting of around 20 players from Pakistan and overseas.

A few of the players were retained from the previous season by teams while the others were picked afresh from the PSL Draft. There was also a transfer window in which teams like Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars exchanged players.

British PM Defends £300m Aid Programme For Pakistan

Theresa May has strongly defended British taxpayer-funded cash handouts to people in Pakistan after a senior Tory MP called for a review of the programme which he compared with "exporting the dole".

Downing Street said the scheme was helping the poorest families in Pakistan and was an efficient and effective way to make sure they had the support they need.

The UK aid budget helps fund the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which offers cash amounting to just over £10 a month to some of the poorest families in a country where 60 million people live on less than £1 a day.

A spokeswoman for the PM told a Westminster briefing that there were "robust" systems in place to protect against corruption and fraud.

"These are cash transfers that are focused on making sure that aid is targeted at those who need it, when they need it. The effectiveness of such transfer schemes has been recognised by the Public Accounts Committee and the National Audit Office who have spoken about the clear, immediate benefits of this system. "In the last four years cash transfers supported by UK aid have helped almost nine million of the world's poorest people to buy food, medicine, and clean water.

"We think it is a respected system for getting aid to those that need it most. We would only pursue such an option where we were clear that results had already been achieved and verified.

So, for example in the case of Pakistan, the programme there, we are providing a small contribution to a much bigger programme run by the government of Pakistan, where there are already proven results.

"There are robust systems in place to protect our aid investments. One of the things that is being introduced at the moment is making sure there are more biometric payment systems to make it one of the most secure programmes in the world.

"The Prime Minister has made it clear that our aid budget is an investment in our security and national interest, and that it is right to honour the commitments that we have made."

UK backing for the Pakistan government's BISP led to cash support for over 235,000 families across the country in 2012, which could potentially increase to 441,000 families by 2020.

Officials believe that offering cash directly to those people cuts out any middlemen, reducing the risk of fraud and minimising the cost of the programme, which is helping around 5.2 million families overall.

It also means that the recipients can decide to spend the money on their most urgent needs, such as food, rent, education or medicine.

The budget for cash transfers has risen from £53 million in 2005 to an annual average of £219 million in the period 2011-15, with £300 million committed to the BISP from 2012 to 2020.

A newspaper investigation into the Pakistan aid scheme found people in a village on the outskirts of Peshawar taking out money from cashpoints with cards they said they had been given after paying kickbacks to officials.

Pakistan Bans TV Host Aamir Liaquat Hussain Over ‘Hate Speech’ Pakistan's media regulator has banned a highprofile television host after accusing him of hate speech that could put lives at risk.

Aamir Liaquat Hussain had accused five missing liberal activists and their supporters of blasphemy.

Such allegations can incite murder in Pakistan where blasphemy is a crime that can result in the death penalty.

The regulator's decision to ban the controversial religious broadcaster takes place "with immediate effect".

Aamir Liaquat, who describes his programme Aisay Nahi Chalega (This is Not Acceptable) as Pakistan's leading TV show, publicly criticised the five liberal bloggers who mysteriously disappeared earlier this month.

All had aired views critical of the military or militancy on social media. No group has said it is holding them.

The regulating body, Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (Pemra), said it had received "hundreds" of complaints about the show aired on Bol TV, and made the decision to ban Aamir Liaquat after monitoring his programme for several weeks.

In a document sent to Bol TV, Pemra said that Aamir Liaquat "wilfully and repeatedly made statements and allegations which [are] tantamount to hate speech", adding that his remarks incited "violence against citizens".

Aamir Liaquat was told he was prohibited from appearing on the channel "in any manner".

His allegations against the activist bloggers are serious as the mere suspicion of blasphemy can evoke a strong reaction from a section of organised religion in Pakistan, with victims being attacked and in some cases lynched by angry mobs.

The ban on Aamir Liaquat's appearance on TV comes in the wake of a hail of protests from individuals who have been accused by the controversial televangelist of blasphemy, treachery and fornication. The broadcaster has been levelling these accusations by name, and publicly in his programme.

For example, in a recent programme he claimed that the five "missing" social media activists who are widely believed to have been detained by secret agencies have actually "defected to India".

He also passed some virulently sexist remarks about a number of liberal women who have

distinguished themselves as artists, authors, researchers and human rights activists.

And he has tended to be abusive. In one recent programme he accused a senior journalist of having an extramarital affair and challenged him to contradict this if he was "the true son of his [legal] father".

Prominent civil rights activist Jibran Nasir, who has spearheaded demonstrations over the missing bloggers, tweeted that Pemra had done "its job", adding: "We can rejoice when the missing come back home."

The disappearance of the five bloggers, who were reported missing from various cities in Pakistan earlier this month, raised fears of a crackdown on free speech in the country.

Bol TV was told by Pemra to comply with its ruling and ban Aamir Liaquat from broadcasts or face losing its licence.

FIFA World Cup Expands To 48 Teams For 2026 Football’s world governing council is expanding the current FIFA World Cup roster from 32 to 48 teams.

Meeting in Zurich, the international body unanimously approved to grow the prestigious competition by another 16 teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

The 2026 edition will see teams divided into 16 groups of three. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the knockout stages of the tournament. The end result will see a total of 80 matches.

This is an increase of 16 from the 64 games that will feature in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The expansion was one of the key pledges made by new FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Gianni wants the sport to become more inclusive. Hoping to grow the sport globally, Infantino says: “There is nothing bigger in terms of boosting football in a country than participating in a World Cup.” The FIFA boss explains further that with 48 teams they can generate approximately 630 million US dollars in profit.
