Surge In Anti-Muslim Hate Crime Police in Manchester and London registered surges in anti-Muslim hate crime in the immediate aftermaths of the Manchester Arena bombing and the London Bridge attack.

The number of Islamophobic attacks in Manchester went up fivefold in the week after the concert bombing, with 139 incidents reported to Tell Mama, the group recording Islamophobic crimes, compared to 25 incidents the previous week.

Bomb threats, racist taunts and graffiti are incidents among a significant rise in hate crimes. And more recently the acid attack in London which has been registered as a hate crime and not islamophobic or terrorist. Never the less, the rise of hatred towards Muslims and backlash for from the atrocities carried out by terrorists is hurting the common people of all ages, starting from school age children.

Police forces around the country have stepped up protection for Muslim communities in the wake of the Finsbury Park attack, with the home secretary, Amber Rudd, pledging that the extra resource will remain in place “for as long as it is needed”.

Rudd has said indicative figures suggest that more

than half of those who experience hate because of their religion are Muslim. The limited data available appears to suggest an ever rising level of Islamophobic attacks.

The Met police say the volume of hate crime they record as Islamophobic attacks has increased sharply in the last four years. The force recorded 343 incidents in the 12 months to March 2013, 1,109 in the 12 months to March 2016 and 1,260 in the 12 months to this March.

The Met pointed out that the Finsbury Park attack was not the first act of terrorism against Muslim communities. In 2013 a Ukrainian neo-Nazi, murdered 82-year-old Mohammed Saleem and tried to bomb several West Midlands mosques in the hope of instigating a “race war”. A year later, another neo-Nazi was jailed for 10 years after plotting to bomb mosques in Merseyside. The far-right leader Tommy Robinson has been accused of trying to exploit the Finsbury Park attack by referring to it as “a revenge attack”. There is growing evidence of a rising trend in far-right activity in Britain.

Last December, National Action became the first

far-right extremist group to be banned by the home secretary under counter-terrorist proscription legislation.

The latest Home Office figures for terror-related arrests showed that 113 white people were arrested in the 12 months to March 2017, compared with 68 the previous year – an increase of 66%. The Home Office statistics make no distinction between those involved in far-right groups or white Muslim converts.

Police forces have issued hate crime awareness advice and urged people to report any such incidents.

More and more people have been taking to social media to share stories and share emergency medical procedures in case of an acid attack.

But the other side of the story is that people of races and religions have come together in solidarity, tolerance and acceptance. The Muslim community has been fundamental is responding to helping and raising funds for those affected by recent tragedies. continue on page 2

Thousands March On Parliament In Anti-Government Protest Thousands of people gathered in central London to demonstrate against the UK government's economic policies.

The protest was organised by a group called the People's Assembly Against Austerity.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was among the speakers who addressed crowds at The Not One Day More protest. Speaking in Parliament Square, Mr Corbyn said: "The Tories are in retreat, austerity is in retreat, the economic arguments of austerity are in retreat. "It's those of social justice, of unity, of people coming together to oppose racism and all those that would divide us, that are the ones that are moving forward."

The crowd chanted "oh Jeremy Cor-

byn" and "Tories out" during the rally, while many carried banners saying Justice For Grenfell.

The organisers said on Facebook that they "invite everyone - from campaigns and community groups across the country, from the trade unions, from political parties and any individual - to come together in one massive show of strength and solidarity".

The statement added: "We're marching against a government committed to austerity, cuts and privatisation.

"We're marching for a decent health service, education system, housing, jobs and living standards for all."

Downing Street did not want to comment on the protest.

New Police Team In Burngreave A dedicated team of officers has been placed in Burngreave to address the community’s issues and tackle crime.

The team, which consists of a Police Sergeant and four PCs, started their duties in the Burngreave area recently and this work will continue indefinitely while the neighbourhood consultation events are ongoing.

Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley explains the change: “I want to make it clear that the introduction of this new team is in no way intended to undermine the ongoing neighbourhood policing consultations. “It is still of vital importance that we create a policing structure that works for our communities and these events will continue, so please ensure you attend any locally if you want a say in what the force may look like. “However, given the concerning events of last week it became clear that the Burngreave and Spital Hill area needed some renewed focus, so we have introduced a local problem solving team.

“Those officers and staff will work closely with our partner agencies to examine the current issues affecting the local community, to devise possible solutions and offer additional support. “Crime in any form will not be tolerated and it is my hope that with the introduction of the dedicated team this week, local residents and businesses are reassured by how seriously we’re taking this matter and will work with us to make their community as safe as it can be.”

Anti-Muslim Hate Crime Continued from page 1 We hope you don’t encounter Islamophobia at all, but if you’re a Muslim in the 21st century, chances are pretty high you will. So here are some ways to deal with it.

Ignore the haters. This is one option many might already follow.

Insults are usually based on nothing, so it seems like a waste of time to respond to someone who verbally assaults you. Many people might not like this one at all, because the irritating feeling that you’ve done nothing could haunt you for a while.

If something happens to you, share your story. You can share your story on social media and create awareness so people know what’s happening out there. It weakens the arguments of people who think that Islamophobia is just made up and doesn’t exist at all. And yes, these people exist too.

Educate them. When you show people that they don’t know anything about the so-called values they base their hate on, you’ll leave them speechless.

Remember who you are. When someone calls you a “nasty Muslim”, you must remember that it’s still better than being an uneducated racist.

Stay calm. Don’t get angry, don’t lose your temper, even if you’re very frustrated for being treated unjustly. Staying calm doesn’t mean you can’t defend yourself of course. It’s just a lot more convincing when you’re not screaming.

Non-Muslims, don’t be quiet. Stand up for your Muslim friends, because they need your support.

Don’t be too patient when in danger. If someone gets too close or violent, don’t hesitate and call for help, any way possible. This is very important, especially if you’re alone somewhere.

Don’t lose faith in humanity. For every Islamophobe out there, there are 1000 amazing people who will accept you, no matter what you believe.

Sprinklers To Be Fitted In All Sheffield Council Tower Blocks Sheffield City Council, after a series of meetings with tower block residents, announced that it will be fitting sprinklers in all 24 council tower blocks.

The authority has already spent millions on fire safety in its council homes and improvement works have been carried out over the last five years. The authority had always intended to review its policy on sprinklers later this year, at the end of that five year programme, but is bringing the commitment forward to provide extra reassurance to residents.

Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council, said: “We have done a huge amount of work in recent years to make sure our tower blocks are safe. The cladding systems are fireproof and comply with building and planning regulations.

“We had always intended to review our position on sprinklers later this year. But as an extra reassurance to residents, I am today announcing this has been brought forward and we will be fitting sprinklers in all 24 blocks.”

The council will start consulting on a block by block basis later this year with tenants and leaseholders. There is already one tower block with sprinklers – Callow Mount – which was retrofitted in 2011, as part of work with the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Twenty of the council’s 24 tower blocks have metal cladding.

This is fire proof as the insulation is mineral and rock wool, with fire breaks at the floor and party walls. This creates a fire-proof box around each flat to the external structure to prevent the spread of fire to other flats. One tower block has been found to have flammable cladding and is in the process of removal from the building. The other three are brickwork-clad and designed to operate in the same way as the other 21 but in these cases have a separate metal fire barrier installed.

Foreign Workers May Ditch Britain

UK To Leave Single Market By March 2019

More than a million foreign workers are preparing to ditch Britain, adding to fears that the country is facing a Brexit brain drain, new research shows.

The survey by accountancy giant Deloitte shows that 36% of nonBritish workers currently in the country say they are thinking about leaving by 2022, with 26% planning to move even sooner, by 2020.

This figure represents 1.2 million jobs out of 3.4 million migrant workers in Britain, underscoring the severe jobs crisis facing the country as it begins the process of extracting itself from the EU. Highly-skilled workers from EU countries are the most likely to consider leaving, with 47% thinking about upping sticks in the next five years.

To change their minds and stay, 32% of skilled foreign workers said they would need to hear more positive statements from the Government that they remain welcome.

Lower cost of living and more initiatives to improve work-life balance would also help, respondents said.

The findings are likely to increase political pressure to ensure access to talent is maintained following Brexit.

Theresa May has laid out her plans to grant EU nationals in the UK "settled status" and the right to stay in the country after Brexit. But the offer is contingent on Britons in Europe receiving an equivalent deal, which means Europeans in the UK are still living under a cloud of uncertainty. At times of uncertainty, skilled workers are quickest to get their CVs out. The UK should not necessarily expect all the best and brightest to wait around for another few years of uncertainty.

Faced with the potential loss of so many migrant workers, the survey suggests employers will struggle to fill the skills gap.

Almost half (48%) of migrant workers already in the UK see the country as being less attractive as a result of Brexit, the study showed, while highly-skilled workers reported the largest drops in the attractiveness of the UK. Employers can also take comfort in the fact that the UK overall retains its appeal as a place to live and work. Despite Brexit uncertainty, 89% of non-British workers say they find the UK either quite attractive or highly attractive as a work destination.

For respondents based outside the UK, the country ranked as the most desirable place to work ahead of the US, Australia and Canada.

Deloitte surveyed 2,242 EU and non-EU workers, half living in the UK and half living outside.

The UK will be out of the customs union and single market after March 2019, David Davis has suggested.

The Brexit Secretary said he believed exit talks will be completed within the two-year deadline set out under the Article 50 process. Mr Davis said any transition period was likely to end by 2022 as "the most important thing is it's got to be done before the election". And he said any transition arrangements will not extend to trade.

Under the Government's plan to extend rights to EU citizens already living in the UK, Mr Davis said there would be "practically no burden" on businesses. He said: "My job is to bring back control of migration to Westminster. "It is not to slam the door on immigration. "We will bring immigration down but in a way and at a pace that does not cause labour shortages or, worse, undermine the nation's need for new talent."

Downing Street insisted the length of any transition or implementation phase will form part of Brexit negotiations.

Free Vitamins For Pregnant Women And Babies It’s summer and the sun is shining – but not only is that good news for people enjoying the great outdoors, it’s also good news for unborn babies.

Sunlight is one of the main sources of vitamin D, which pregnant women need throughout their pregnancies to decrease the chances of their babies developing rickets.

Unfortunately, though, many women do not get enough sunlight, or enough vitamin D in their diets. As a result, pregnant women in Sheffield are now being offered free vitamins throughout their pregnancy as part of a new campaign to reduce the number of cases of rickets in the city.

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, added: “I am pleased to support this important initiative, which I hope will cut cases of this serious but preventable condition.

“It is also important to address some of the reasons why so many of us have low vitamin D levels, which include increasing our time spent outdoors in the sunshine and ensuring we eat varied and balanced diets.”

A free eight-week supply of Healthy Start vitamins will also be available for all babies, as well as to women who are breastfeeding. This initiative is being introduced in Sheffield for the first time, but has already seen success in other areas of the country.

Rickets – a preventable disease, yet one that is on the rise – is characterised by bowed legs and delayed walking in young children. Children can develop it if they do not have enough vitamin D, which is needed for strong bones.

Most of our vitamin D is formed in the skin in response to sunlight. Some foods, especially oily fish, provide additional ways to obtain vitamin D. However, during the winter, the sun’s rays are

Many working parents of 3 to 4-year-olds in England will be eligible for 30 hours of free childcare - rather than the current 15 hours.

But the first thing you need to know is that this is 30 hours free for only 38 weeks per year - not 52 weeks of the year. It's basically equivalent to school term times - and totals 1140 free hours across the year.

In theory, you may be able to spread the free childcare out over further weeks, but this will mean you'll get fewer than 30 hours free childcare each week.

It will be available at the following participating childcare options: ~Nurseries and nursery classes ~Playgroups and pre-school #Childminders not strong enough for vitamin D to be produced.

This can be further complicated when people spend a lot of time indoors rather than outside, or where people have cultural reasons for keeping their skin covered.

Sunshine is good for our physical and emotional wellbeing, but we understand better nowadays that both too little and too much sunshine can have adverse health effects.

Healthy Start vitamins for women contain vitamin C, vitamin D and folic acid, while the vitamins for children include vitamins A, C and D. Health visitors and GPs will also signpost children at high risk of rickets to their local children’s centre as they will be eligible for free Healthy Start vitamins until they are four years old.

Women can access the free vitamins by speaking to healthcare professionals at all stages of their pregnancy, or soon after giving birth.

Rickets is often considered a disease of the past – and that is exactly what it should be.

Sheffield MPs Call For National Action On Fire Safety All six Sheffield MPs have joined together to call for a complete review of national fire safety regulations based on the outcome of a full public inquiry, which they say must report urgently, following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.

Speaking on behalf of all six MPs, Paul Blomfield, Member of Parliament for Sheffield Central, said: “Like everyone across the country we have been shocked by the devastating fire in Grenfell Tower. The tragic loss of life is made so much worse by the knowledge that it should never have been allowed to happen. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends, and a community in mourning.

We now need urgent action to ensure that nothing like this can ever happen again. That’s why we need a full public inquiry as soon as possible, with interim findings completed by the summer. The Government then needs to act quickly on the findings and, crucially, provide the resources that local councils and fire services need to implement whatever measures are required.”

The MPs have met with Sheffield City Council’s Director of Housing and Cabinet Member Councillor Jayne Dunn to consider the local implications and praised their prompt action to reassure tenants by conducting additional safety checks of council tower blocks, contacting residents to remind them of fire safety advice, and reassuring the public that the type of cladding used at Grenfell Tower, about which there had been a lot of concern, had not been used in any council refurbishment in Sheffield.

Mr Blomfield said: “Sheffield Council is a national leader in fire safety and we were pleased at their response to this tragedy. Not only did they act quickly to reassure tenants in the days after the disaster, but have now committed to install sprinkler systems in all their tower blocks. We will press the Government to fund this programme so it does not impact on other spending.”

The test includes questions on a range of aspects of British culture and history. People who failed can take the test over and over again but each attempt to pass the test costs £50.

Cyberattack On Parliament A cyberattack on Parliament may have compromised up to 90 email accounts, according to news sources. Hackers attacked the email server for Parliament prompting the digital security team to shut down external access to MPs and peers’ email accounts.

While the attack has now been contained, preliminary investigations suggest that there may have been a compromise of a number of parliamentarians’ communications. The investigation by Parliament’s digital security team is ongoing, but it currently speculates that up to 90 accounts - or less than 1% of the network’s 9,000 users - may have been compromised in the attack. “(Hackers) carried out a sustained and determined attack on all parliamentary user accounts in an attempt to identify weak passwords,” said a Parliamentary spokesperson.

The 9,000 users include not only senior ministers and other MPs and peers, but also their staffers and many civil servants. It is not yet known whose accounts may have been compromised. Government ministers are expected to carry out confidential work from their de-

partmental email accounts. These are hosted on the gov.uk domain, rather than their parliamentary accounts which are hosted on the parliament.uk domain. News sources have confirmed that the attack was not targeted against particular accounts, but rather attempted to probe the email server used by Parliament.

The issue that has taken my interest is housing and for the first time in my memory it is a subject that is being discussed with all the parties addressing the topic. Generally it is a subject that gets relegated behind other policy issues, not this time, So why is it being discussed, the answer lies in history. Housing was a major issue following the second world war with the country rebuilding. Many new homes were built coinciding with major social housing programmes. It was a boom time in housebuilding which also helped in creating employment. Since those days there has not been such intensity in housebuilding with demand for homes increasing year on year to the extent that it has now reached a stage where intervention is needed.

The other major issue that has added to the housing crises is that homes were generally affordable in line with salaries as building declined demand has increased, the economic dynamic of supply and demand has kicked in forcing prices upwards.

The average UK salary will only support a house to the value of approximately £100k, therefore it is easy to spot that prices on average are much higher. What this does is demand for housing in the social sector increases as there is no corresponding increase in building in this sector demand far outweighs supply.

So the debate begins as to how this shortage should be handled which for the first time in generations has engaged all the political parties. It is certainly a step in the right direction as no ac-

tion was no longer an option. Therefore what can we expect. It is clear that we need more homes, in particular for the younger generation, with the present administration intervening through various initiatives such as Help To Buy, relaxing certain planning conditions such as converting empty office accommodation into homes.

In this article I do not intend to discuss any parties policies in detail but instead outline the reasons for the intervention. The following areas which need to be looked at: PLANNING The planning system holds the key to future development. Many people will argue this needs an overhaul not just tweaking, the system has evolved over many years and could be modernised even further. Successive governments have looked at varying or amending various planning laws over many years this has had an effect. But one question that keeps coming up is that we should start looking at greenfield sites or more particularly the Green Belt. Clearly this is an “elephant in the room” moment people are reluctant to talk about it because it arouses many emotions. I can say that in the last few years the question is beginning to be asked albeit apologetically. It is clear this debate has a long way to go, but it is without doubt that planning has a huge role to play.

there are schemes which are developing around the country which are aimed at the rented market. Clearly this will be beneficial because it will provide homes of quality for the long term. It is not a new phenomenon it is widespread in Europe where numerous people rent their homes.

As more such projects are developed it will clearly start to address some of the demand issues.

Whatever new Government comes into power they will need to embrace and enhance the Private Rented Sector.

It is predicted as the new tenure for the 21st century.

PUBLIC SECTOR HOUSING It is more commonly referred to as Council Housing, there were tremendous numbers of new homes built post war that accommodated many families at affordable rents. Houses were of high quality in pleasant surroundings, whole new communities developed. Council house building in most areas of the country is either non existent or just a trickle. It is clear there is demand for these homes but as supply has dwindled, waiting lists for such homes now runs into many years. It is not unheard of that in some areas this is almost 20 years.

There is a school of thought that building new Council homes for rent should be the way forward. It is also evident that in a small way this is happening in some areas. High-Risk Of Food Poisoning We all love it when the weather gets warmer but people are being asked to think harder about food safety in the summer months.

New research indicates that people could be putting themselves and their families at risk of food poisoning through lack of knowledge of the 4Cs of food hygiene: Chilling, Cooking, Cleaning and avoiding Cross-contamination.

The Food Standards Agency’s Food and You Survey, which collects information on food safety through 3,118 interviews across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, found that in Yorkshire and the Humber: ~A third (32%) of people in Yorkshire and the Humber said they never change chopping boards between different types of food; more than any other region. ~A third said that they generally defrost meat or fish

in the microwave (6%) or fridge (30%), in line with FSA guidelines. ~~Half (51%) did not know that a fridge should be kept between 0°C and 5°C. ~More than a third (37%) sometimes washed raw chicken.

Washing chicken risks spreading bacteria and should be avoided. ~One in seven (14%) don’t always wash their hands before starting to cook or prepare food.

It can be very serious if you get food poisoning from badly prepared food, however, the basic rules set out by the Food Standards Agency website can help you avoid the risks in the first place.

Goodbye Roaming Charges

As of June 15th roaming charges across the EU have become a thing of the past.

Holidaymakers, students and business travellers are now able to call, text and use data for the price they pay at home while travelling across the 28 EU member states. Labour MEPs have campaigned for the end to roaming charges for many years. So no more surprising phone bills when you return home - a real benefit from the Single Digital Market. What happens after Brexit though remains to be seen.

An Iranian city has sweltered in 53.8C heat in what may be one of the hottest temperatures ever recorded.

The scorching temperature in Ahvaz, home to over a million people, marks the hottest day on record in the Middle Eastern country.

The recent temperature was also a June record for the continent of Asia.

Another source, Weather Underground, recorded a high of 129.2 degrees (54C) at around 5pm in the city. If that is verified, it would match the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth since records began.

That temperature was previously witnessed in Kuwait last July and in California’s Death Valley in 2013.

The official record temperature of 57C, recorded in Death Valley in 1913, has been discredited by meteorologists in recent years. The World Meteorological Organization is required to review the Ahvaz temperature before it can be officially recognised.

Ahvaz, located in the country’s south-western Khuzestan province, dates back to the Persian Empire and is known for being ethnically diverse.

The challenge for any Government is how to accommodate this need without making it unaffordable.

LAND It is a finite commodity which needs to be used for the benefit of improving and addressing the needs of society. There is a debate around how public sector land should be used, with some people arguing that it should be used to alleviate the developing housing crises.

The Green Belt issue will also be a major challenge for the future.

In conclusion I hope this article has given you a flavour of the debate surrounding housing, it is going to develop as years go by. The important point is that it is on the agenda of all the political parties.

As Norman Kirk a former Prime Minister of New Zealand said people want: “Somewhere to Live, Someone to Love, Something to Do and Something to Hope For”, in my opinion a very simple formula of expectation from Government.

Why Is Sheffield Called Sheffield?

You may live, work and play and have spent most of your life here - but do you know why Sheffield is called Sheffield?

The name Sheffield is actually Old English or Anglo-Saxon in origin, the earliest historical form of the English language, spoken in England and southern and eastern Scotland in the early Middle Ages.

It derives from the River Sheaf, whose name is a corruption of shed or sheth, meaning to divide or separate.

Field is a generic suffix deriving from the Old English feld, meaning a forest clearing.

It is likely then that the origin of the present-day city of Sheffield is an AngloSaxon settlement in a clearing beside the confluence of the rivers Sheaf and Don founded between the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in this region (roughly the 6th century) and the early 9th century.

The names of many of the other areas of Sheffield likely to have been established as settlements during this period end in ley, which signifies a clearing in the forest, or ton, which means an enclosed farmstead. These settlements include Heeley, Longley, Norton, Owlerton, Southey, Tinsley, Totley, Wadsley, and Walkley.

The earliest evidence of this settlement is thought to be the shaft of a stone cross dating from the early 9th century that was found in Sheffield in the early 19th century. This shaft may be part of a cross removed from the church yard of the Sheffield parish church (now Sheffield Cathedral) in 1570 - it is now kept in the British Museum.

The Domesday Book of 1086, which was compiled following the Norman Conquest of 1066, contains the earliest known reference to the districts around Sheffield as the manor of "Hallun" (or Hallam).

The Domesday Book refers to Sheffield twice, first as Escafeld, then later as Scafeld.

Today, let’s examine some interesting facts about two entirely different topics.

Zamzam water is a true miracle. Many international research institutes have tried and failed to determine the secret of Aab-e-Zamzam.

In Makkah, where the Zamzam well is located within the premises of the Kaaba, there is no trace of any other source of water. International research institutes have brought many distinctive characteristics to light. In one minute, it provides 720 litres of water. In one hour, the well provides 43,200 litres of water. But nobody knows the source of this water.

A Japanese research institute has concluded that nowhere else in the world is there any water similar to that found in Makkah. Even recycling the water does not change its characteristics. Analysis shows that one litre of Zamzam water contains 133mg of sodium, 96mg of calcium, 43.3mg of potassium, 195.4mg of bicarbonate, 163.3mg of chloride, 0.72mg of fluoride, 124mg of nitrite and 124mg of sulphate. The total depth of the well is 96 feet and the distance from the spring source to the bottom of the well is about 56 feet. All other wells usually develop algae and minute plants.

These change the taste of the water – usually for the worse. However, the taste of Zamzam water never changes.

Once, when I was setting up the uranium enrichment plant at Kahuta, I went to Germany with some colleagues. On the way, we stopped off in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. General Zia had

made a rule at the time that government servants could perform Umrah while on their way abroad and only had to pay the small cost of rerouting their flights via Saudi Arabia. We gratefully made use of this facility.

At the time, the marble surrounding the Kaabah was hardly 20 feet wide. From this walkway, the main prayer halls were connected by various paths with gravel between them. Many people used to place their prayer mats on this gravel to pray. Unfortunately, many of these stones would come onto the marble and it was extremely painful when people stepped on them with bare feet.

Just to the left of Muqam-e-Ibrahim, a flight of stairs led down to the Zamzam well and one could peep into it. Pumps circulated the water to taps and people were taking showers there. With time, all this has changed. The gravel was removed and white marble was laid all around with under-floor cooling. The open spaces and stairs leading to the well were closed. Zamzam water was placed in coolers for devotees to drink and large tankers took water to Madina and coolers were put inside Masjid-e-Nabvi. All devotees now have access to cold Zamzam water. Just recently, the Saudi government started a train service from Jeddah to Makkah and Madina, sparing devotees the inconvenience and extra expenditure.

The second interesting topic I would like to mention refers to General Zia’s important cricket diplomacy. In the late 1980s, the Indian government deployed a large number of soldiers and weapons near its border with Pakistan – Operation Brasstacks. The whole world was afraid that

Queen’s Income Rises

The Queen’s income is set increase to over £82 million due to a government decision to increase her funding to cover “essential works” to Buckingham Palace.

The increase comes after the Crown Estate, a collection of lands and holdings belonging to the Queen, made a £328.8 million profit in the year to the end of March 2017, an 8% increase on the previous year.

The Queen’s sovereign grant, the amount she receives from taxpayers, is calculated as a percentage of Crown Estate profits. In November, it was announced that the percentage would rise for 10 years from 15 to 25 per cent.

The Queen’s share of last year’s profits will amount to £82.2 million, but she will have to wait until 2019, as her income from the estate is paid two years in arrears.

Last year the Queen’s take was £42.8 million, and in 2012 it was £29.1 million.

The rise was agreed to fund the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, including replacing the ageing electrical and plumbing systems.

Details of the increase were released as Buckingham Palace accounts revealed the royal family last year spent £4.5 million on travel. The most expensive journey was aboard the new government Voyager “state jet”. It cost an estimated £154,000 for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall to hire the jet on charter for a week-long trip to Romania, Italy and Austria.

Other travel costs also included Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official tour of India, which cost £97,703 in charter and scheduled flights.

Zyzzyva The latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary has a new last word for the first time in a decade.

Zyzzyva, a genus of tropical weevils found in palm trees in South America, has knocked out zythum, an ancient Egyptian malt beer, as the very last word to be listed in 829,000 entries.

It is a new word among a variety to be introduced to the dictionary, including hygge, a Danish term described as "a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being".

There are also some familiar words that have been given new definitions.

They include "woke" which is used as an adjective to mean "alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice", and "thing" when used to express disbelief, as in "how can that be a thing?"

There are also 50 new terms relating to tennis, such as "tennis mom" and "tennis dad" to describe parents who encourage their children to play the sport.

Post-truth has also entered the dictionary and is defined as "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping political debate or public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief".

Explaining how a word qualifies for inclusion, the OED said: "We require several independent examples of the word being used, and also evidence that the word has been in use for a reasonable amount of time."

75 High-Rise Buildings Fail Fire Safety Tests After Grenfell Disaster

Seventy-five high-rise blocks across 26 local authorities have failed fire safety tests since the Grenfell Tower disaster. Checks are being carried out on hundreds of tower blocks after it was established that the cladding on the 26-storey building helped the fire, which is believed to have killed at least 79 people, to spread. Communities minister Sajid Javid told the Commons that the so-called combustibility test had been failed by every building examined so far. “The fact that all samples so far have failed underlines the value of the testing programme and the vital importance of submitting samples urgently,” he said.

Alumni of Military College Jhelum Sheffield, UK 20th May 2017 Sheffield played host to the Alamgirians of Military College Jhelum as they reunited from all over the UK and Europe to reminisce and enjoy memories of their time at the College.

Alamgirians were hosted by Iftikhar Shah and friends at Arooj Restaurant Sheffield for an evening of dinner and music, performed by renowned singer Nooran Lal. It was a memorable evening for Alamgirians and their families.

Military College Jhelum (MCJ) is the oldest military institution of its kind in Pakistan. Named as King George Royal Indian Military School, it was founded at Sarai Alamgir on the 3rd of March 1922, and started functioning three years later in 1925. It was organized as a residential school for the sons of Muslim soldiers with the object of producing educated rank and file for the British Indian Army units. In rare cases, some talented students could be endorsed for the grant of commission through Kitchner College Nowgong. During World War II, the school underwent structural reforms. It was organized as a College for training potential officers for the army.

With the creation of Pakistan, this institution took further strides both in scope and service.

It was restructured as a quality public school and the largest single feeder for the Pakistan Military Academy. Renamed as Military College Jhelum in 1956, it was commissioned to pursue the course of academic excellence.

GCSE Pass Levels Causing Confusion Over University Entry There are warnings of confusion over university admissions from changes to GCSE exams in England which will create two different pass grades.

A number of universities have minimum entry grades at GCSE level - such as a C grade pass at maths and English. But GCSEs are switching to numerical grades, from 9 to 1, and there is uncertainty because both 4 and 5 are officially classed as pass grades.

Universities are now setting different "pass" grade equivalents. University College London says a C grade pass now requires a grade 5, while Manchester University has set the benchmark at grade 4.

Students and parents are now confused and looking for advice. It's inconceivable that a simple task of deciding a pass has led to a ridiculous "standard pass" and a "good pass".

"Universities and employers need to decide whether a 4 or 5 is the benchmark. At the moment different standards across universities will lead to a divisive landscape leading to disadvantaged students losing out again.

Pupils taking their English and maths GCSEs this year will be the first to get the new numerical grades this summer - and these results will have an impact on university applications as well as getting on to A-level courses.

For pupils who get a grade 4 in English and maths, it means that they will already be below the threshold for some universities - even though it is a pass grade - and before they even begin their A-level courses.

The new numerical system will be phased in for other GCSE subjects over the next few years.

When the Education Secretary Justine Greening explained the new points system to the

education select committee in March she said that grade 4 would be a "standard pass" and grade 5 would be a "strong pass". She wrote to the committee chairman to clarify that grade 4 was the "equivalent to a C and above" - and that employers and universities would be expected to recognise the grade 4.

But there are different interpretations from different universities. University College London says it expects applicants for all subjects to have a C grade at maths and English GCSE - but under the new system that will be a grade 5.

King's College London also makes a grade 5 an equivalent of a grade C for its admissions. But Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool put grade 4 as their requirement.

London School of Economics, which previously required grade Bs, now requires a 5, although a B grade could also be the equivalent of a 6.

Oxford and Cambridge, which run their own tests and interview systems, do not have such across-the-board minimum requirements for GCSEs. A spokesman for the exam regulator Ofqual said that it remained up to universities to set their admissions rules. But the spokesman said that this year's GCSE candidates would not apply this year - and the requirements might be re-set again after the first wave of results.

A Department for Education spokesman said that the changes were "part of our drive to continue raising standards" and a wide range of resources had been produced to explain the new grading system. "Most recently every school and college have been sent a pack with information for teachers, students, parents, and employers." A website had also been launched to answer questions people may have, he said.

And as such by thinking this you immediately fall into his claws again…for the greatest trick the devil (shaytaan) ever played was to make people think he doesn’t exist?. If your free of illicit thoughts and desires, able to withhold your feelings of jealousy and rage towards your fellow mankind, not chase money at any cost and stay free of the seven deadly sins, which for those of you who may have forgotten are, pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth, which give rise to many other immoralities if unleashed, if you resist these then indeed you are on your way to purification and salvation.

So comes the end of the blessed month and you feel a sense of hope, you are after all emerging to celebrate this period culminating in the festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr ( feast of the breaking of the fast) and a new found optimism for the coming months of life. ………and then the clergy take over, the Müllers and their sidekicks, restrained by the jailing of their worst enemy the Devil for a month, now free again, start to feel his stick, prodding them and prodding them again and again…in the back and in the late of night….…on the legs and on the thighs….… in the stomach and on the eyes, until they can’t resist his lure and succumb to his desires. So the announcements start

to emerge, Eid is delayed by another day or Eid will be tomorrow, even if everyone knows it can’t be and so arguments and debates, take place across the nation in mosques and Islamic centres, until the early hours causing separation and heartache for families and ordinary Muslims, until neighbours are pitted against each other and fathers and sons celebrate on different days, with households on the same street, who share everything in common, their heritage, ethnicity, even inter marriage, but cannot share a common Eid celebration.

I have always believed that the Muslims don’t need enemies of other faiths, because they have themselves first and foremost to struggle with. Muslim on Muslim conflict daily kills more people around the world than any other struggles. Every time you hear about a terrorist incident as the recent ones killing innocent people, some of whom may not be Muslim (because remember British Muslims have also been the victims of terrorism in the UK), it amazes me that Daesh (ISIS) and their ilk daily kill Muslims, be it by suicide bombings in cities like Baghdad or Kabul or beheadings and mass executions, the list goes on, yet this is almost accepted as part of their mission, when it is clearly genocide and terrorism against people because of their faith.

The generational decline for Muslims in actually understanding and implementing their faith has a lot to do with the Imams, Müllers, Qaris and Pirs that they regularly turn to for answers and decisions, which they then blindly accept. Have they forgotten that each person will answer for themselves in the grave and on the day of judgement, when raised after death and before God, will he justify his actions by blaming them, when God gave each of us a brain and a soul of our own?

And when we get to that fallen angel the Devil and he has to answer the people’s accusations, that he led them astray he will not hesitate to remind you that you had free will and that you didn’t have to follow his suggestions, he didn’t make you harm anyone,(he doesn’t have a stick to hit you with), you did it, he didn’t force you to hate your neighbour, (he doesn’t have a stick to hit you with), you did it and he didn’t make you fast when you should be celebrating and celebrate when you should be fasting, (he doesn’t have a stick to hit you with) you did it and now reap the consequences of your actions.

EE And Vodafone Are UK’s Worst Mobile Providers EE and Vodafone have been named as the UK’s two worst mobile phone providers by the consumer group Which? In its sixth annual survey of members, EE and Vodafone, which together account for more than half the market, recorded the worst scores for customer satisfaction. Giffgaff was named as the firm with the happiest mobile customers. Despite its fast 4G service, Which? found that just 20% of EE customers would recommend the company’s services to a friend or family member. The company, that was a subject of a £12bn takeover by rival BT in 2016, scored poorly for both customer service and value for money. Only a quarter of those surveyed said they would recommend Vodafone and it scored almost equally badly.

“Year after year we see the smaller providers giving great service and some of the biggest providers struggling to meet their customers expectations. Those who are fed up of receiving a poor service from their provider should look to switch,” say Which?

EE was fined £2.7m by Ofcom in January after the

regulator found the company twice broke a “fundamental” billing rule. Almost 40,000 customers were overcharged a collective £250,000. In October last year, Vodafone paid out £4.6m as a result of two investigations that found the company had mishandled complaints, and had failed to credit more than 10,000 pay-as-you-go customers who topped up their accounts. Overall, the community-run Giffgaff – which is owned by O2’s parent company Telefonica –topped the Which? survey table with a score of 81%. About 70% of its customers said they would definitely recommend their provider to others. The supermarket brands Tesco Mobile and Asda Mobile also scored strongly in third and fourth place. Three was the highest scoring of the big players. Virgin Mobile was the third worst provider.

“Getting a good 4G connection is one of the most important factors for consumers, so it’s disappointing that these ratings don’t take network performance into account,” said an EE spokesperson.

THE HISTORY OF Pi Mr Shumile J. Chishty Pi is such an enigmatic figure that it enables us to work out the area of a circle.

Beginning from 1900 BC, the ancient Babylonians at the time gave a value for pi which was 3, but they also gave a closer approximation of 3.125. They calculated the area of a circle by taking 3 times the square of its radius, which gave them the first digit of pi. Years later in 1650, the Egyptians calculated the area of a circle by using a formula that gave an estimated value of 3.1605, the formula was A=1/4 (256/81) d^2, but today it is now commonly A=πr^2.

The first calculation of pi was done by Archimedes. He had estimated the area of a circle using Pythagoras theorem to find the areas of two regular polygons within which the circle was circumscribed. The symbol ‘∏’ was first utilized in 1706 by a mathematician called William jones, who was also a close friend to sir Isaac newton, but before then the symbol ‘’P’’ was used to resemble the circumference of the circle, and stands for perimeter. And so later on in the years Pi became excessively popular. In recent years, pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits past its decimal. Only 39 digits past the decimal are needed to accurately calculate a spherical volume.

Why is pi an irrational number?

The answer simply is, since a circle has no end, pi is irrational, if you were to observe a circle closely, and If you were to take the diameter and wrap it around the circle, you will end up doing it 3 times, (with a little gap) no matter what size the circle is, and then you will be left with cutting up your diameter to fill the rest of the gap. Take for example a UFO has landed in a corn field, and you know the diameter, for this example we will say 600 metres, from that you will be able to give an approximate of what the circumference is, which will be 1800 metres, since 3 X 600=1800, because like I mentioned before the diameter wraps around the circle exactly 3 times but leaving a little gap. Rational numbers can be written as a ratio of two integers, for example 1/5 , 1/3 , whereas irrational numbers can’t be written as a ratio of two integers. There are lots of other irrational for example the famous Euler’s number ‘’℮’’, which start off with the numbers 2.718281. Many people have attempted to prove that pi is an irrational number, for example Lamberts proof, he said that if x is non-zero and rational then this expression must be irrational. Since tan (π /4) =1, it follows that π /4 is irrational. There are many other

The Oxford University Press made the claim after analysing more than 130,000 children's stories submitted for BBC Radio 2's annual story-writing competition 500 Words.

The US president's name came up more than any other - suggesting how much Donald Trump's larger-than-life personality has become part of UK children's literary imaginations.

But the presidential name has been used in many unfamiliar settings, creating new words and characters, such as Boggle Trump, Snozzle Trump, Trumplestilskin and Trumpyness.

The short stories also display a satirical ear for

President Trump's use language. A Trump-related tale of space travel includes the boast: "I am going to make the Moon great again!"

Perhaps reflecting the wave of elections and votes, the word "politics" has itself become more commonly used by children entering the competition and there were references to "fake news" and "Brexit". Social media networks such as Snapchat and Instagram are also frequently mentioned. Another widely used term was "super", whether it was characters who were "super-excited" or "superhappy" or many variants of "superhero".

The formula is = (Georgian year - 622) X (pi/100 + 1) = HIGERIA year, if you are in the second half of the year use 622, but if you are in the first half of the year use 622.5.

However, there is another similar formula to work out the HIGERIA year, as follows, (Georgian year – 622) X ( 33/32) = HIGERIA year Now let’s put both formulas into comparison and see whether

we get the same answer: (2017 – 622) X (pi/100 + 1) = 1438.825218 (2017 – 622) X (33/32) = 1438.59375 As you are able to see, that both formulas give a correct answer, however 33/32 equates to the number 1.031 and pi/100 + 1 is also the same, just after the 3rd decimal place in 1.031, the numbers begin to change. If we retrieve all the numbers possible in Pi and insert into the equation we will get more of an exact answer. Suggesting Pi is an important number.

The Arabs use the lunar calendar, it takes the moon exactly one month to revolve around the earth. If we wanted to calculate how many kilometres the moon travels in each cycle we can do this by connecting the centre of the earth to the centre of the moon with a straight line. The length of this line is the earths radii, plus the moon’s radii, plus the distance between them, all you need to do is multiply either of the diameters by pi and you will get the circumference of the moon or earth (depending on diameter you selected), you then multiply by 12 for each month of the year to work out the kilometres the moon has revolved around the earth in 1 year, and to work out how many times it revolves around in 10,000 years you simply multiply it by 10,000.

Soaring Obesity Could See Millenials Die At Younger Age Than Their Parents Four in ten young adults in Britain are overweight or obese, according to new figures released by the NHS. Nearly three million 16- to 24-year-olds weigh too much - a million more than two decades ago, the statistics reveal. Doctors said the generation risked dying at a younger age than their parents, despite a host of medical breakthroughs in recent decades.

The figures from NHS Digital, show 39 per cent of 16to 24-year-olds are overweight or obese, up from 27 per cent in 1993. Soaring numbers have dangerously large waist sizes, the statistics reveal. In total, 17 per cent of young men have a waist of at least 40 inches, compared with 4 per cent in 1993. And 23

per cent of women of this age have a waistband of at least 34.5 inches - a rise from 9 per cent in 1993.

The figures suggest 2.9 million young adults have an unhealthy weight - compared with 1.8 million just over two decades ago. Experts said modern diets, sedentary lifestyles and successive governments’ failure to drive down childhood obesity were to blame for spiralling problems.

Being overweight or obese can cause a whole cacophony of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, fatty liver disease and cancer.

Facebook Hits Two Billion Users Facebook now has more than two billion monthly active users, the social network has revealed.

The figure, cementing the site’s place as one of the most popular web services in the world, comes just 13 years after the platform was created in the Harvard University dormitory of co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg posted: “As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!

We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together. It’s an honour to be on this journey with you.”

The site, which was initially open only to university students at some schools in the US, reached one million users ten months after its launch by Zuckerberg and co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin.

By the end of 2016, Facebook had just over 1.86 billion monthly active users, more than a billion of which accessed the site every day.

As well as surpassing the two billion marker, the site has also grown to spawn several other apps and services, including Facebook Messenger, which itself boasts more than a billion active users.

The company has also been involved in some of the biggest tech acquisitions of recent years, having bought photo app Instagram for one billion dollars (£784m) in 2012 and both WhatsApp Messenger

and virtual reality firm Oculus in 2014 for 19 billion (£14.8bn) and two billion dollars (£1.5bn) respectively.

The company also launched onto the US stock market in 2012 and has begun the development of solarpowered drones that can be used to broadcast internet signal to remote parts of the world.

However, the social network is today battling issues surrounding the size of its platform, with heavy recent criticism directed at the site over its promotion of fake news stories and an alleged inability to block extreme, violent and illegal content, something the site itself has admitted it “needs to do better” at following a series of high-profile incidents.

The most recent involved a man in the US posting a video of himself to the site shooting and killing an elderly man.

The Day England’s Health Started to Improve Back in July 2007 the English government passed a new law which make it illegal for anyone to smoke in an enclosed public place and within the workplace. This ensured that everyone could use the train station, eat in a restaurant or shop without suffering the negative effects of second-hand smoke.

The change in law has been described as: The most important piece of public health legislation for a generation.

Of course, bringing it in had its challenges. Various options were proposed, including a plan to exempt private clubs and pubs that didn’t serve food – so-called “wet pubs” – but in some parts of England this would have excluded over half of all licensed premises.

Eventually, this proposal was quashed, mainly because of public health concerns. People with jobs forcing them to remain in smoke environments often had no choice but to do so – and why should they be subject to the health risks of secondhand smoke?

But apart from making public places more pleasant and healthier to be in, the new law also had some unexpected results.

1. More people have given up smoking There was a spike in people deciding to stop smoking as a result of the ban. Everyone knew the health risks of smoking – the ban simply cut out many of the places where people might have wanted to light up.

Ever since the law came into force, smoking rates have gone down yearon-year. And increasingly young people in particular seem to be going off the idea. The number of children under 16 who regularly smoke has halved to 3% since 2007 – the lowest figure on record.

2. Fewer people hospitalised Figures also soon showed a significant decline in hospital admissions for heart attacks, asthma and lung infections. In the year following the law, there were 2.4% fewer heart attack cases recorded in Accident and Emergency departments than the year before. This might not sound very much, but that is 1,200 fewer cases in the country as a whole.

These figures are even more dramatic if you bear in mind that many workplaces had already gone smoke free before the law came into effect. This makes the fact we can see a distinct drop before and after the ban came into place even more remarkable.

3. Goodbye branded packets The success of the ban also gave people the courage to tackle other smoking-related issues that might once have seemed impossible to address – such as plain packaging and other forms of advertising at the point of sale.

Figures from Australia – which imposed plain packaging three years before the UK – found that restricting the colour, size and font on cigarette packets led to a noticeable drop in the number of people smoking.

Similar projections were made for the UK, with scientists claiming plain packets could encourage more than 300,000 Britons to quit smoking for good.

4. Increased awareness of passive smoking The smoke-free law also made people more aware of the dangers of secondhand smoke everywhere, including in their own homes. This is a step in the right direction for people with longterm lung conditions –as it has shown how sensitive to air quality these people are. For them a

smoke-filled environment is a nightmare.

5. No more smoking at stations Some companies went further than required by the new law. The Association of Train Operator Companies and Network Rail, decided to make all station premises smoke free. Perhaps they were remembering the fire at Kings Cross underground station in 1987. It killed 31 and was blamed on a lit match thrown away by a smoker exiting the station.

Special ID Register For EU Citizens Living In UK After Brexit All 3 million EU citizens resident in Britain will have to apply for inclusion on a “settled status” register if they want to stay in the country after Brexit under Home Office proposals. A 15-page policy paper proposes a “light touch” online system to process applications that will give applicants the same “indefinite leave to remain” status as many non-European nationals who have also lived in Britain for five years. The EU “settled status” residence proposals could entail an identity card backed up by entry on a Home Office central database or register. It has yet to be decided whether the residence document for “settled status” EU citizens will be issued as an identity card or simply exist as an entry on a Home Office database.

“No families will be split up. Family dependents who join a qualifying EU citizen here before the UK’s exit will be able to apply for settled status after five years. After the UK has left the European Union, EU citizens with settled status will be able to bring family members from overseas on the same terms as British nationals,” Said Prime Minister Theresa May. The policy paper was published as Theresa May issued a statement detailing the government’s proposals on EU citizens’ rights after the UK leaves the bloc. After May’s statement, the EU’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier tweeted a sceptical response, saying: “More ambition, clarity and guarantees needed than in today’s UK position.”The policy paper reveals that EU nationals who have applied for permanent residency status documents since the referendum – thought to number more than 150,000 – will be asked to apply again, albeit in a streamlined process. Record Number Of Muslim MPs Elected The number of Muslim MPs elected to Parliament has risen to another record of 15, boosted by the sudden and unexpected resurgence in support for Labour under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

The rise saw an average increase of more than 6 percent support in votes for each of the successful candidates, which included 12 of the previous 13 incumbents being returned as well as three new faces winning for the first time. The high turnout included 12 Muslim Labour MPs being elected, up from nine in 2015. All three Muslim Conservatives also retained their seats with increased majorities as well.

Hopes that the Liberal Democrats would succeed in having their first Muslim MP elected failed to materialise, while north of the border in Scotland, the only Muslim MP, Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh, lost her seat amid the huge collapse in support for the SNP, nevertheless, the number of female Muslim MPs remains at eight, unchanged from the 2015 general election. Elsewhere it was the resurgence in support for Labour that attracted a high turnout particularly among younger voters and defied opinion polls ahead of the election when it had been expected that at least a couple of the party’s Muslim MPs defending tiny majorities could have so easily also lost their seats.

London The biggest risk was in Ealing Central & Acton where Rupa Huq had surprisingly gained for Labour in 2015 with a minuscule 274 vote majority in what was the Tories number two target seat. But instead, she increased her majority to almost 14,000 with a whopping 14.5 percent rise in the share of the vote.

The task seemed no easier for her party colleague Tulip Siddiq in Hampstead & Kilburn, who turned a majority of just over a thousand in the Tories number 11 seat to 15,560 with a slightly even more impressive 14.6 percent increase in the share of the vote.

In Tooting, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan was under pressure defending London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s former seat in Tooting. It was listed the Tories target seat number 24 when it had been predicted the Tories could win at least 50 Labour seats. Her achievement was to more than double her 6,357 majority to again more than 15,000.

Over in one of the largest Muslim and ethnically diverse constituency of Bethnal Green & Bow, the fourth Muslim woman to hold a London seat, Rushanara Ali added another 11,000 vote to her already comfortable 24,317 majority in another surge in support of around 10 per cent.

Painless Flu Jab Patch A 'painless' sticking plaster flu jab that delivers vaccine into the skin has passed important safety tests in the first trial in people. The patch has a hundred tiny hair-like microneedles on its adhesive side that penetrate the skin's surface. It is simple enough for people to stick on themselves.

That should help more people get immunised, including those who are scared of injections, experts told the Lancet journal .

Unlike the standard flu jab, it doesn't need to be kept in the fridge, meaning pharmacies could easily stock it on their shelves for people to buy.

Volunteers who tested it said they preferred it to injections. It offers the same protection as a regular vaccine, but without pain. The patch punctures the uppermost layers of the skin, whereas

regular flu injections go all the way through and into muscle. Zoomed in under the microscope what you'll see are microscopically small needles. They puncture painlessly into the skin.

The developers tested the patch alongside flu injections. Some of the 100 volunteers got the regular shot in the arm, while others applied the microneedle patch to their wrist for 20 minutes.

Most said using the patch was painless, but some experienced mild side effects - redness, itching and tenderness in the area of skin area where it had been applied. These symptoms got better on their own over days.

Experts say the patch could revolutionise how flu and other vaccines are given, although more clinical tests over the next few years are needed to get the patch system approved for widespread use.

The patch can be thrown in the bin after it is used because the microneedles dissolve away. And because it can be safely stored for up to a year without refrigeration, it could prove extremely useful in the developing world.

Experts from Public Health England said it might also be good to use in young children, who tend not to like needles, although the UK has already introduced a nasal spray flu vaccine for them.

Tomatoes Grow Underground According To School Children New research from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) shows that one in ten 14 - 16 year olds in the UK say that tomatoes grow underground, and a quarter of primary school children say that cheese comes from plants.

The research, conducted as part of the BNF’s annual Healthy Eating Week, surveyed over 5,000 school children aged 5 - 16 years old, and found that more than one in ten (13 percent) 8 - 11 year olds answered that pasta comes from an animal, and almost one fifth (18 percent) of 5 - 7 year olds say that fish fingers are made of chicken.

The survey also shows that one in ten 11 - 14 year olds do not know that carrots and potatoes grow underground.

The Healthy Eating Week survey, one of the largest of its kind in the UK, reveals that 6 percent of 14 - 16 year olds say that dairy cows produce eggs and one sixth (14 percent) of 5 - 7 year olds say that bacon is the produce of cows, sheep or chickens.

The survey also questioned food group knowledge of all age groups, with almost a quarter (23 percent) of 5 - 7 year olds say that bananas, roast chicken, broccoli and wholegrain bread belong in the dairy and alternatives food group.

One sixth (16 percent) of the same age group reported that bread, yoghurt, chocolate and salmon belong in the fruit and vegetables food group.

Children in the survey were asked to indicate where they source their information on healthy eating from. Over half (54 percent) of 11 - 14 year olds use the Internet as a reliable source of information on healthy eating, and this increases to almost two thirds (64 percent) for the 14 - 16 age group. Schools are reported as the second biggest

source of information for 14 - 16 year olds (51 percent), while almost two thirds (59 percent) of 11 - 14 year olds rely on schools to provide them with the correct information.

The British Nutrition Foundation, said: “Assuming that information about food and health gathered from these sources has an impact on children’s nutrition knowledge, and ultimately their lifestyles and health, it is important that we ensure all information is evidence based. We can’t control what children access on the internet and elsewhere but

we can ensure that teachers are equipped with accurate information. However, research we conducted last year amongst primary school teachers showed that seven in ten of participating teachers had not undertaken any professional development in ‘food’ during the past two years.

“With no formal professional support provided to teachers centrally, schools and individual teachers take on the responsibility for interpreting and delivering the curriculum in their own way. This approach means that there is a risk of conflict-

ing or misleading messaging being disseminated through schools across the UK. This, combined with the latest results of the survey showing that the Internet is one of the most popular sources of information for teenagers, means that it has never been more important for schools and teachers to be armed with the correct information so that children and young adults are able to decipher between fact and fake news.”

Despite knowing that they should aim to eat at least five-a-day, children still do not know what should be included in their five. The survey shows that 14 - 16 year olds say that strawberry jam and boiled potatoes contribute to a person’s five-a-day (25 percent and 50 percent respectively) while on the positive side, eight in ten (82 percent) 11 - 14 year olds know that dried fruit or vegetables count towards five-aday.

49 percent of primary school children reported having their five-a-day, and 27 percent of 14 – 16 year olds said they had at least five portions of fruit and vegetables. However, over half (51 percent) of primary school children reported eating four or less portions of fruit and vegetables the day before, while 67 percent of secondary school children reported the same; more than one in ten (12 percent) 14 - 16 year old answered that they had none.

Schools and families can and should successfully work together to, in turn, educate children and then motivate them in their endeavours to make healthier choices. Furthermore, the links between physical activity, health and diet should be frequently highlighted by the government’s programmes.

Salman Khan starer Tubelight which was released worldwide recently but contrary to expectations and much hype created, the film underperformed at the box office.

Salman performed the role of a man-child in the movie which was set against the backdrop of Indo-Sino war of 1962. Tubelight is the story of a man's unshakable faith in himself and the love for his family.

The movie was directed by Kabir Khan and this was the third time Salman-Kabir duo collaborated after Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Tubelight was expected to race ahead of the previous record, however, now that looks a bit difficult looking at the soaring state of the movie.

Compensation Package Rejected By Parachinar Bombing Victims Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, after much delay, has announced Rs1 million as compensation for each family of the victims of the recent Parachinar bombing attack, which claimed at least 72 lives.

The prime minister also announced Rs0.5 million for each person injured in the blasts, according to a statement issued from the Prime Minister House.

However, protesting tribal elders have rejected the offered compensation, saying that they need to be recognised as human beings first. The compensation was announced six days after the bombing.

A large number of people have been holding a sitin at Shaheed Park, Parachinar since the blast, to protest what they see as government inaction after the bombings. Several other protest demonstrations have also been held across the country, seeking justice and compensation for the victims' families.

The prime minister had cut short a trip to London to visit Bahawalpur, where 150 people had lost their lives after the spilled fuel they were collecting from an overturned oil tanker caught fire. The premier had announced government jobs for the injured and the heirs of the deceased, along with Rs1 million in aid for each of those injured and Rs2mn each for the heirs of those killed.

The protesters have been demanding jobs and compensation on a par with what Prime Minister Sharif announced for the people killed in Bahawalpur.

The protesters had also demanded a visit from the army chief and the federal interior minister. The army chief had reportedly attempted to fly to Parachinar, before being forced to turn back due to weather conditions.

Parachinar, with a population of more than 50,000, has been under a strict security quarantine for quite some time. Army and paramilitary personnel have set up checkpoints on all routes leading to the town and visitors and vehicles go through extensive search and identification process.

The twin blasts had occurred in the Turi Market near Tal Adda, where a bus terminal is also located. The explosions targeted people shopping in the area and those heading out of the city ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, administration officials said.

The second explosion had targeted rescuers and bystanders who rushed to aid those who had been hurt in the first blast.

On March 31 this year, the city had suffered a similar tragedy when 23 people were killed in a car bomb blast near an Imam¬bargah at midday. More than 70 others were wounded in the attack. Another person had died later after security forces opened fire on a crowd trying to hold a demonstration in front of the political agent’s office in protest against increasing terrorist attacks.

In January, 25 people were killed and 87 others suffered injuries when a bomb went off during peak business hours at a crowded vegetable market in the city. In what appeared to be a sign of growing cooperation among extremists, two banned groups had come forward to claim the deadly assault, with one describing the incident as a suicide attack.

Pakistani PM On Edge As Daughter Faces Inquiry

The career of Pakistan’s prime minister appeared to be hanging by a thread recently as his daughter was summoned to appear before a corruption investigation into the family’s business affairs.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, 43, will appear before a six-man panel that will decide the fate of Nawaz Sharif, her father. The committee is investigating the family’s overseas assets, including a portfolio of London properties, and will advise the Supreme Court whether there is sufficient evidence for him to be forced from office.

Some allies have already distanced themselves from the prime minister. One government source said that Mr Sharif was “irrelevant in the regional game” and criticised the “almost total absence of any foreign policy”.

Even among his family, unity has cracked. “A sad day for some is a small price if it commences fair justice for all,” Tehmina Durrani, the prime minister’s sister-in-law, said. Her husband, Shehbaz Sharif, 65, the leader’s younger brother and chief minister of Punjab province, is spoken of as heir apparent.

Mr Sharif was defiant during a visit to London at the weekend. He dismissed the investigation as a “drama” and warned that derailing his administration would undermine the economy. It did not help, however, that the prime minister was speaking outside the Park Lane apartment block that lies at the heart of allegations against him. One staffer admitted that the atmosphere at home was so bad that although Mr Sharif was purportedly in London to celebrate Eid, the trip was really set aside for consultation because “meeting in confidence in Islamabad is difficult”.

Ms Sharif, her father’s favourite who was groomed for public office, is a prized scalp and, among rivals yesterday, there was undisguised gloating at her summons. The Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of the opposition

leader and former Test cricketer Imran Khan described it as “the most awaited event in the Panama case”.

Ms Sharif was named last year among the Panama papers — millions of leaked documents from the law firm Mossack Fonseca that exposed the offshore assets of thousands of wealthy individuals and companies.

With her brothers, Hasan and Hussain, it emerged that Ms Nawaz owned companies in the Virgin Islands and used them to buy luxury flats in Mayfair. Mr Khan alleges that the Sharifs have plundered public money from Pakistan, using the Virgin Islands companies to move their fortune offshore and launder it overseas.

The Pakistani military, which could have the ultimate say in whether Mr Sharif survives, has refused to take sides in public. General Qamar Javed Bajwa, chief of army staff, has indicated his "intention to keep things neutral", according to officials.

Supporters of the prime minister cried foul after anonymous WhatsApp calls were made to government officials, apparently trying to influence the investigation.

There is scant love for the prime minister among many army officers. “He has successfully spent five years on borrowed money. He has enjoyed his time at public expense but our poor nation will keep paying back this debt for coming decades,” Lieutenant-General Javed Ashraf, the former head of Pakistan’s spy agency, said. “This time the Supreme Court has to declare Nawaz ineligible for his continuous lies to the nation.”

Mr Sharif has been forced from office by the military twice before. If he is toppled a third time, supporters said that it would amount to a soft coup. The prime minister is a year away from a general election that he was favourite to win.

Unjust To Designate Supporters Of Kashmiri Struggle As Terrorists The Pakistani Foreign Office (FO) has slammed the designation of supporters of the Kashmiri right to selfdetermination as terrorists, terming it 'completely unjustified'.

The FO statement came a day after the United States (US) State Department designated Hizbul Mujahideen's supreme commander Syed Salahuddin as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) and imposed sanctions on him.

The decision drew criticism and condemnation from both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), with Kashmiris chiding the US President Donald Trump's administration for "equating their legitimate struggle for internationally acknowledged right to self-determination with terrorism."

"The designation of individuals supporting the Kashmiri right to self-determination as terrorists is completely unjustified," FO Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said in a statement without naming Salahuddin or the US. The development surfaced hours ahead of a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US

The FO reiterated Pakistan's longstanding commitment to countering terrorism "in all its forms and manifestations", adding that the Kashmiri struggle "remains legitimate".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted "the gross and systematic violations of human rights of the Kashmiri people" in India-held Kashmir (IHK), saying that Indian security forces had intensified their "brutal policies of repression" in the region, including the use of pellet guns, extrajudicial killings, rape, use of human shields, arbitrary arrests, undocumented disappearances and other forms of violence and curbs to freedom.

Zakaria asserted that Pakistan would continue to extend "political, diplomatic and moral support for the just struggle of the Kashmiri people for the realisation of the right to self-determination and the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolutions."

Actress Meera has announced that she will be getting married on August 22 to a family friend.

In an article published in Jang, the actress revealed that her Mehndi will take place on August 5 while the Valima ceremony will be held in November.

Meera said that following her marriage she would no longer live in Pakistan and move to the US. Meera added that she would also be leaving the showbiz industry.

Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy Triumph Pakistan cricket team's Champions Trophy win must rank amongst sport's biggest shocks in recent times. Regarded as also-rans, there to make up the numbers and huge underdogs, Sarfraz Ahmed's team confounded the critics and comprehensively beat arch-rivals India in a one-sided final at The Oval.

A team going into the tournament as the eighthranked nation, out of eight teams. A team that had struggled for form in the 50-over version in the last few years, a team that had only scraped into qualifying for the Champions Trophy, a team that had been ridiculed for its outdated approach to a format of the game that had moved on and team which was regarded by most as just there to make up the numbers. The group make-up meant that most experts predicted an easy entry to the semi-finals for England and South Africa, with Sri Lanka and Pakistan contesting third place and the avoidance of the wooden spoon.

Even before the tournament started there was the usual turmoil and chaos in the Pakistan camp with Umar Akmal being sent home in disgrace due to a lack of fitness. The tournament started with an absolute thrashing by India and the proud Pakistani cricket fans were not a happy bunch.

Humiliation was expected and Pakistan's cricket followers feared the worst.

However, Pakistan cricket teams are always at their best with their backs to the wall and with nowhere to turn. With nothing to lose, Mickey

Arthur and Sarfraz Ahmed forged a mentality and game-plan that worked wonders. Changes in personnel, a positive approach, aggression and a never-say-die attitude replaced negativity, selfdoubt, confusing tactics and a timid approach.

Following a surprise-win over South Africa and a nervous defeat of Sri Lanka, the Pakistan team at the end of the group stage was now looking an altogether different animal to the one that had started the tournament. They had made it to the semi-finals which was unexpected. Many would have been satisfied with a semi-final exit, but Sarfraz Ahmed and his team made up of experienced old-heads and exciting youngsters had better ideas and had their eyes on a bigger target.

What followed in the next two games were two of the most flawless performances Pakistan has ever compiled in the 50-over format.

To not only beat England and India but to defeat them in the comprehensive manner they did was unthinkable even for the most die-hard Pakistani fans. With Pakistan over the years it's usually been one of the areas of the game, usually the bowling, that has lead them to victory, but in the semi-final and final all three facets were impeccable.

After defeating a lacklustre England by eight wickets, the arch-rival India stood in Pakistan's way to glory. Given Pakistan's record against India at ICC events and after the drubbing on June 4 at Edgbaston, not many gave Pakistan a chance. But the timid cats of Edgbaston had been replaced by a

modern-day version of the Cornered Tigers at The Oval.

Even Pakistani fans were looking on in disbelief when Sarfraz Ahmed lifted the trophy after demolishing India at a sun-baked Oval. The tactics had been perfect, the energy was there for all to see and there were huge grins on the faces of Pakistani fans who have not had much to cheer in recent times. These were joyous moments for a team that had faced the wrath of the public and media earlier in the tournament and these were moments to cherish particularly as they had beaten the arch-rivals. It was a perfect finale for Pakistan to a tournament that had been expected to be a disaster for the Men in Green.

The Pakistani cricket team had once again given their fans the full range of emotions in a tournament, despair, pain, anger, tension and unbridled happiness. The Pakistan team had defied their critics and won against all the odds. Back in Pakistan, fans took to the streets, waited for the players to arrive at the various airports they were due to land in and thousands of fans waited outside the houses of some of the players. A huge crowd built up outside the home of the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed to welcome him and he did not disappoint them, singing along with the fans and shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' to much elation.

As the dust settles on the brilliant victory at The Oval, thoughts will no doubt turn to how Pakistan cricket's think-tank can utilise the Champions Trophy win and ensure that the victory is not wasted.

Many in Pakistan had become disillusioned with cricket and had fallen out of love with cricket, but the remarkable Champions Trophy win should rekindle that passion for cricket amongst the young population.

Empty stadia in the majority of domestic matches need to be replaced by crowds turning up in healthy numbers. Investment derived from the Champions Trophy win needs to be made at the grass roots level and especially in school-level cricket which is largely being ignored. In addition, facilities at stadiums in Pakistan need to be improved and a portion of the winning funds need to be attributed to better facilities at those venues. The Champions Trophy win may not be the catalyst for international teams to return to Pakistan but it gives the stakeholders in Pakistan cricket an ideal opportunity to revitalise the game and invest in much-needed areas. Those who have the best interests of Pakistan cricket at heart will be urging the men in the corridors of power at the PCB to not waste this golden opportunity and make it count.
