Election 2017:
Labour Promises 10,000 Extra Police Labour is promising to put 10,000 more police on the streets of England and Wales if it wins the election. The party said it would fund additional "bobbies on the beat" by reversing Tory plans for cuts to capital gains tax. Labour said cutting the higher rate from 28% to 20% and the basic rate from 18% to 10% would cost public services more than £2.7bn over five years. Consistently behind in national opinion polls, the party is boosting its policy platform with five-and-a-half weeks until the General Election on 8 June. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will say a 20,000 decrease in officer numbers under the Conservatives since 2010 is "unacceptable" and despite surveys indicating an increase in crime. He plans to fund the additional community police officers across the 43 forces in England and Wales. This would enable an extra police officer on the beat in every electoral ward. But the Conservatives said Labour had already pledged to spend the money on schools, welfare and the arts.
Diane Abbott MP, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, will say: "Theresa May failed to protect communities as Home Secretary and has continued to fail them as Prime Minister. "Labour will reverse the Tories' tax breaks for the rich, providing new money that can be used to put a bobby on the beat in every electoral ward in the country. "We will reinforce confidence in our police forces, with a renewed focus on working with communities, and for communities to fight crime." Labour argues that the number of police officers in England and Wales has fallen by 20,000 since 2010, despite surveys indicating an increase in crime. The Office for National Statistics suggested a 9% rise in all crimes in 2016 was probably due to "recording processes". However, the ONS said a 21% hike in homicides and 14% surge in knife crime appeared to show "small but genuine increases". It is understood Labour's plan would not involve police community support officers (PCSO) but police officers working in community roles.

CUT FOOD WASTE
Around £10bn worth of food is thrown away by households every year, much of it simply because it looks unusual. This is one of the findings of a report by Parliament’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee. Proposals for reform include the recommendation that knobbly and crooked vegetables should not be banished from supermarket shelves simply because they aren’t a perfect shape. Farmers supplying fruits and vegetables to UK supermarkets currently get their produce rejected on the grounds that it fails to meet cosmetic quality standards set by the big retailers. Some supermarkets recently launched wonky veg lines, which were positively received by shoppers. Asda was the first, with a “wonky veg box” containing 5kg of fresh produce including carrots, potatoes, pep-
pers, cucumber, cabbage, leeks, parsnips and onions. The committee made a range of suggestions, including a national reduction target to cut the food waste that costs the average person £200 a year; raising awareness from a young age; more funding for waste reduction body Wrap and a review of food date labelling, particularly “best before” dates. Other suggestions included requiring food businesses over a certain size to separate food waste for collection; increasing the amount of surplus food given to charities; and requiring supermarkets to publish data on the amount of food they throw out, something already done by Tesco and being looked at by Sainsbury’s. Economically, food waste costs households hundreds of pounds a year and causes increased disposal costs to local authorities, pushing up council tax bills.

40 Tooth Brushing Clubs To Be Rolled Out Across The City A successful project which has led to more children brushing their teeth in Sheffield is being rolled out to nurseries and schools across the city. Figures from Public Health England show that, in Sheffield, the average five-year-old child has one decayed, missing or filled tooth. This is slightly above the national average. The tooth brushing scheme has been running in 26 primary schools and nurseries since 2014. Nurseries and schools are provided with the free toothbrushes and toothpaste as well training, information and the skills they need, to ensure that children learn about the importance of regularly brushing their teeth from an early age. Now, tooth brushing clubs are to be set up at 40 additional schools and nurseries across the city, as a partnership between Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Teaching Hospital Trust’s oral health promotion team. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “There is no doubt that getting all children into a good tooth brushing routine can prevent decay and ultimately save teeth. “I’m so pleased that brushing clubs are being extended to 40 more schools and nurseries across the City – it’s great that more children will be helped to get into the habit of brushing their teeth. “This project is partnership working at its best; the Council, health services and schools working together to encourage children and families to brush! brush! brush!” Tooth brushing clubs help to reinforce the importance of good brushing and a low sugar diet to children and their parents. Dentists advise brushing 2 times a day for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste and to avoid sugary snacks and drinks. As well as this it is essential for children to regularly visit their own dentist for routine checkups.

Sheffield Council Decides To Scrap Free Post-16 School Transport
Parking Change To Benefit Sheffield Motorists
Families of children with special educational needs will have to pay to get to Sheffield schools from September. The council voted to charge pupils £540 per year for access to post-16 transport services. A hardship fund will be set up to help the most vulnerable young people. Councillors also voted to end the free post-16 bus pass scheme for families on low incomes, instead asking them to use money from the national 16-19 Bursary Fund. But the authority said it remained committed to its independent travel training scheme, which helps young people with special educational needs get to school or college on their own. Cabinet member for children, young people and families Jackie Drayton blamed continuing Government cuts for the decision. “Unfortunately, because of a further 50 per cent cut to our budget over the last four years, we had to look at these sort of discretionary services,” she said. “It’s with a heavy heart, but we are between a rock and a hard place at the moment.” Two hundred young people aged 16 or above with special educational needs in Sheffield get free transport to school. This could be on a minibus, costing £4,000 a year, up to a taxi, costing £12,000 per year. The council also issues about 150 ‘zero fare’ bus passes to post-16 pupils on low income. From September 1 those young people will instead be asked to rely on money from the Government’s 16-19 Bursary Fund, which replaced the Educational Maintenance Allowance under the coalition in 2010. Families of children with special educational needs will also be encouraged to use the bursary to cover the £540 cost. The council runs a reduced bus fare scheme through the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, allowing all post-16 pupils to travel to school for 80p per journey.
Thousands of Sheffield motorists who pay to park using their mobile phone, by text, app or via the web won’t have to pay extra for the service – and it will soon be available throughout the city for the first time. Sheffield City Council has announced a new provider for its cashless parking payment scheme, which launches on Tuesday, May 2. Initially it will launch in the city centre but is soon set to be rolled out to all pay and display parking bays across the city over the next few weeks for the very first time. New provider Pay By Phone doesn’t charge motorists a fee to use its service – meaning it costs people exactly the same to park using text, on the website, via a mobile app or telephone as it does to put cash into a meter. The only optional cost offered by the service is to receive texts which warn motorists that their parking space is about to run out – but subscribers can opt out of receiving these messages. This extension into pay and display outside the city centre has been in response to feedback from customers and businesses, ensuring it’s easier and more convenient to park in council pay and display locations. Motorists can download the Pay By Phone app from their mobile phone or tablet, or log on to the website, www.paybyphone. co.uk, to register their details.
Deposit On Drinks In Plastic Bottles Considered To Boost Recycling
£25 Million Plan Approved For New Secondary School
The Government is going to look at introducing deposits on plastic drink bottles. The idea of a deposit return scheme in the UK was highlighted as part of Sky Ocean Rescue, which launched earlier this year. Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom said: “We have made great progress in recycling plastic bottles, but there is a long way to go. It is totally unacceptable that half of the 35 million bottles sold every day end up in landfill or - even worse - littering our countryside, roadsides and seas.” “The new expert group I am setting up will consider all the best evidence available on the most innovative, but also practical, ways to tackle plastic rubbish” She said. Edinburgh is home to the UK's only deposit return scheme, where consumers pay an extra 10p to 25p for bottled drinks. They get the money back when empties are returned to be recycled. Such initiatives already exist in 35 countries and states around the world, with impressive results. In Germany, Norway and Finland more than 90% of bottles are returned. The newest scheme is in Lithuania, where recycling rates jumped from 32% to 75% in the first seven months. But the UK lags behind in comparison. Here, only 57% of household plastic bottles are left out for recycling - and even fewer are actually recycled. Every day, a staggering 16 million plastic bottles are dumped in landfill, or littered across the land and sea. Campaigners say small economic incentives can make a big difference. The number of plastic bags being used by shoppers plummeted by 85% in a year after the introduction of a 5p charge.
Sheffield councillors have approved a plan to build a £25 million secondary school in the south-west of the city despite objections from local residents. Members of the planning committee voted in favour of the council’s own planning application for land off Carterknowle Road granting permission for the proposed Mercia School. The proposal received more than 80 objections from residents concerned by an increase in traffic and worries that the old landfill site is unsafe for development. The new school will be run by Mercia Learning Trust, a multi-academy trust that was founded by Sheffield’s King Ecgbert School.
New Police Chief Pledges More Bobbies On The Beat Newly appointed assistant chief constable for South Yorkshire Police, David Hartley, plans to cut gang crime and strengthen neighbourhood policing. Hartley has outlined a new strategy for neighbourhoods, with more officers on the beat, better use of technology and restructuring of the force.

New UK Speeding Fines Mean Much Tougher Penalties The Sentencing Council has introduced new UK speeding fines, resulting in much tougher penalties for those who get caught speeding. The change went into effect from 24th April 2017. Authorities hope that the updated penalties will reflect the serious nature of speeding and its devastating consequences. Drivers could be fined 150% of their weekly income if they get caught, meaning they could face a maximum fine of £2,500. In addition, the toughest fines will go to those who speed on the motorway. Elsewhere, drivers can expect to face fines of up to £1,000. The UK Sentencing Council has designed a table to show how they divided the new speeding fines. They split up the ranges between Band A, B and C, where Band C remains as the toughest penalties. Drivers face Band A fines and 3 points off their licence if they drive between: 21-30mph in a 20mph zone. 31-40mph in a 30mph zone. 41-55mph in a 40mph zone. 51-65mph in a 50mph zone. 61-80mph in a 60mph zone. 71-90mph in a 70mph zone. In the next category, drivers face a Band B fine and 4-6 points off their licence or a ban from driving for 7-28 days if they drive between: 31-40mph in a 20mph zone. 41-50mph in a 30mph zone. 56-65mph in a 40mph zone. 66-75mph in a 50mph zone. 81-90mph in a 60mph zone. 91-100mph in a 70mph zone. The final category will see driver receive a Band C fine and 6 points off their licence or a ban for 7-56 days if they drive between: 41 and above in a 20mph zone. 51 and above in a 30mph zone. 66 and above in a 40mph zone. 76 and above in a 50 mph zone. 91 and above in a 60mph zone. 101 and above in a 70mph zone.
The Sentencing Council made the updates to the previous speeding fines system as they felt it didn’t “reflect the potential harm” of speeding. For years, many campaigns have been created to show drivers the tragic effects of speeding, such as permanent disabilities and even death. Yet many still take the risks. Reports show that in 2015, approximately 167,000 people in England and Wales received speeding fines, with the average costing £188. With this worryingly high figure, the Sentencing Council appear to try new tactics in tackling speeding by updating the fines. They also revealed that courts can decide on the appropriate level of punishment to sentence drivers with. It will depend on factors such as previous convictions and even weather conditions. It remains to be seen, however, whether the new fines will create the expected result.
General Election Will Fall In Ramadan Prime Minister Theresa May has been accused of ignoring Muslim voters in the General Election by scheduling it during Ramadan. Muslim politicians from Labour and the Scottish National Party fear reduced voter turnout among Muslims on June 8, which falls during the holy month where fasting from dawn to sunset takes place. Labour's Yasmin Qureshi, MP for Bolton South East, said: "It is unfortunate that Theresa May has scheduled the election to take place during the holy month of Ramadan. "I know this will present challenges to Muslim voters and those who wish to campaign. At best I can only suggest that this did not even feature in her thinking, which is disappointing." She added: "It may be that the election falling during Ramadan reduces turnout among Muslims." And Rushanara Ali, Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, said: "The fact that the general election will fall in the middle of Ramadan is not ideal. Holding an election during Ramadan means there could be a disproportionate effect on voter turnout in those constituencies with a sizeable Muslim population. If anyone thinks that their ability to go
and vote will be affected, I urge them to register for a postal vote." However, the Muslim Council of Britain said it could see "no reason" why holding the election during Ramadan - which this year is expected to be from around May 27 to June 24 - should have any impact on Muslims turning up to vote. The group added: "There is probably more 'voter fatigue' generally across the country following the extensive recent campaigns in the lead-up to the 2015 general election and the 2016 EU Referendum. Muslims fasting during Ramadan will go about their normal daily activities and taking time out to cast a vote will have no impact on their choice to do so." Sayed Yousif Al-Khoei OBE, chairman of the AlKhoei Foundation, said: "In general, Ramadan and fasting is not supposed to impede normal life. It's supposed to be a spiritual experience. But for some people, you know, the combination of the hot weather... and lack of foods could be an impediment. But the spiritual uplifting of fasting should really make a Muslim more resilient and that should not really be a pretext for not voting, and I encourage everyone to use their right to vote."
Angela Merkel Warns Britain: ‘Don’t Delude Yourself Over Brexit’ Angela Merkel has warned British politicians to rid themselves of “illusions” over the UK’s status after Brexit, as she takes a hard line ahead of negotiations. The German Chancellor told cheering Bundestag members Britain would become a “third-party state” after its departure and could not expect to enjoy the same rights as remaining nations. “A third-party state, and that’s what Britain will be, cannot and will not have at its disposal the same rights, or be in a better position than members of the European Union,” Ms Merkel said, to loud applause. “I have to say this clearly here because I get the feeling that some people in Britain continue to work under illusions, and that is a waste of time.
Without progress on the many open questions of the exit, including the financial questions, it makes no sense to have parallel negotiations over the future relationship” she said. Future trade deals, the possibility of tariffs and questions over visas and free movements are among the key issues for both sides of the negotiating table. Ms Merkel said that discussions of the UK’s financial obligations to the EU must be addressed early. As well as the huge cost of incorporating Brussels laws, Britain must also may a “divorce bill” expected to cost between €20bn and €60bn. Saying negotiations would only properly start after June’s unexpected general election, Ms Merkel said the 27 remaining EU members agreed that the financial settlement must be set as a priority.
BOXING AND CRICKET COME TOGETHER TO BRING SUCCESS FOR SHEFFIELD T20 CRICKET! Famous boxing Promoter Dennis Hobson and Professional Cricket coach/player Irfan Mirza had combined to once again put Sheffield on the map as they brought back the National T20 cricket cup to Sheffield. The competition that is held once a year was previously won by a very talented Southampton team in London last year. In this year’s final that was played in front of a very big crowd at Killamarsh ground, we had Sheffield v Nottingham. Sheffield was

captained by Irfan Mirza who also had Ex England fast bowler Saj Mahmood and Pakistan international opening batsman Muhammad Waqas with the rest of the side made up of local Sheffield talent. Nottingham were led by West Indian Fast Bowler Keon Harding along with young Indian IPL star batsmen’s Vikram Singh and Jiwanjot Singh. Irfan won the toss and elected to bat, the two hot shots Muhammad Waqas and Irfan Mirza opened the innings and started brilliantly with an opening stand of 75 in 8 overs, Irfan departed on 38 after excellent work in the field by Vikram to run him out, Waqas continued the assault before he was caught on the boundary on 65 it was then left to Pakistan first class pro Jalat Khan to keep the momentum going with a quick fire 45 with final score ending on 174 in 20 overs. Nottingham were ready for the battle ahead as star man Vikram Singh opened the innings alongside fellow Indian first class player Jiwanjot Singh after a slow start and couple of early wickets it was Vikram who stepped up blasting his way to 85, with only 30 runs needed in 5 overs and 6 wickets left captain Irfan gambled on Muhammad waqas who's part time spin was make a break and the gamble paid off as waqas 3rd bowl of the over got the main man Vikram Singh caught and bowled, Waqas celebration said it all, two more wickets in the same over completely changed the match in favour Sheffield as they clinched it in the last over of the match with waqas finishing on 5-16. Muhammad Waqas was named Man of the Match as Sheffield brought the prestigious national club T20 trophy back to Sheffield. Irfan thanked boxing promoter Dennis Hobson for
being such a fantastic support from start to finish and hoped he continued his support for the Sheffield T20 cricket as it wouldn't have been possible if he wasn't part of the management team. He also thanked Ex England fast bowler Saj Mahmood for participating and mentoring the young players of Sheffield. Dennis Hobson also congratulated the team and was delighted to be part of this success and hopes to continue the partnership with Irfan Mirza in helping grass root sports in Sheffield to achieve similar success be it boxing cricket or football.

“Sheffield Says No To Force Marriages “
Iffat Yasmin Tufail
Forced Marriages is often been perceived as the white elephant that has cogently parked itself in many a family home. Disguising itself as a religious requirement rather than a cultural custom, for centuries this beast has stampeded its presence by manipulating and toying with the concept of arranged marriages. Like a bully; hanging around in a school yard waiting to latch on the most vulnerable, forced marriages has particularly targeted the Muslim community. Such has been the ferocity of its attack that the western world have falsely been led to believe that perhaps forced marriages is in some way permissible under Sharia Law. To conquer this misapprehension and burst the cloud of misconception taunting society, the Muslim Women Network UK joined forces with The Sheffield Federation of Mosque’s, The Pakistan Muslim Centre Sheffield and held a seminar which was hosted earlier this week in Sheffield. ‘Sheffield Says No To Forced Marriages’ commenced with the recitation of the holy Quran, and progressed with a shower of eloquent speakers whose factual and personal experienced, based presentations helped portray Islam’s actual stance on Forced Marriages. Whilst Muhammad Ali , ( Chairman of the Pakistan Muslim Centre) , Lord Mayor of Rotherham (Cllr Lynsday Pitchley.) and the Police Crime Commissioner ( Dr Alan Billings ) gave a comprehensive presentations on forced marriages, It was in actual fact Shahin Ashraf (MBE), the project manager of Muslim Network’s presentation that received the most generous applause. Focusing on why Forced Marriages was not acceptable, Shahin Ashraf’s presentation help slay and diminish any misconception society may have held about Islam and Forced Marriages. Speaking at conclusion of the event Shahin Ashraf said “The event highlighted misconception surrounding Forced Marriages and how these misconceptions led to thinking the act itself was based on religion. The speakers eloquently challenged that narrative. The audience participation highlighted the need for more engagement on issues such as these that affect the moral fibre of our community. “ For years the might of Forced Marriages manipulative tactics allowed it to affect so many vulnerable lives, yet Imam Sheikh Mohammad Ismail, Muslim Chaplain of University of Sheffield’s presentation on the night clarified how forced marriages was an illegal act under Islamic law. The respectable Chaplain expansively helped the audience understand the difference between arranged and forced marriages. Given the sensitive nature of the subject matter, emotions amongst the attendees were naturally very high. The depth of those emotions was elevated further when the nationally renowned poet and philanthropist Asim Khan recited a poem he meticulously brought together concerning a victim of forced marriage. Focusing on the scope of her plight, Aasim Khan, known more openly for his role in “ Poetry in Motion “ almost flooded the auditorium as tears rushed down many a cheek. Whilst the focus of his words may have revolved around a fictitious character, the depth of that
characters experience and troubles were no alien to a bulk of the guest who were failing to maintain a brave face. The event which was hailed a success by all sectors of the community was widely welcomed by all and the Pakistan Muslim Centre was applauded for taking the lead. Chairman Muhammad Ali said , “ Forced Marriages has been responsible for destroying so many lives, we wanted today to be about sending a strong message, Islam Says no To Force Marriages , Sheffield Says No to Force Marriages. I want to applaud the city of Sheffield for coming together with Muslim Women Network and Pakistan Muslim Centre and supporting us in making this brave stand. Concluding what has been hailed as a “ Monumental Gathering “ , master of ceremonies Hafees Rehman, director and secretary of PMC Sheffield said “ Today we have started a tsunami , the waves of which will send a clear message out to everyone : Forced Marriages has no place in society “ . Force Marriages may have relied on the weight of its presence in some cultures and for years society may have falsely believed this cultural concept was the king of the jungle, however the seminar, “Sheffield Says No To Force Marriage” has certainly destroyed the ferocity of Forced Marriages.
UK Doubles Fund To Stem Tropical Diseases The Government has announced a doubling of support to fight Neglected Tropical Diseases, such as trachoma, Guinea worm and river blindness, over the next 5 years. The UK will protect over 200 million people from the pain and disfigurement caused by treatable tropical diseases, International Development Secretary Priti Patel has said. The UK will invest a total of £360 million on implementation programmes to tackle NTDs between 2017-2018 and 2021-22. Neglected Tropical Diseases, such as trachoma, Guinea worm and river blindness, are avoidable infections but can deform, disable, blind and even kill if left untreated. They affect over a billion people in the poorest and most marginalised communities in the world, stopping children going to school and parents going to work – costing developing economies billions of dollars every year in lost productivity and reducing overall global prosperity. Britain is already leading the way in fighting these diseases, and will more than double its support over the next 5 years. This will mean a billion treatments for people at risk in the developing world as part of an international push to eliminate and eradicate these ailments for good.

More Families Given Primary School Places Of Choice More children have been given their choice of primary school in Sheffield, admissions results on 17th April show. In total 6,079 children received a preferred place, an increase on last year’s results. 98.19 per cent of pupils starting primary school in September have been given a place in one of their preferred schools, an increase from 97.55 per cent last year. More children have also been given their first choice of schools. 92.05 per cent of pupils starting primary school in September have been given their first preference, an increase from 90.05 per cent last year. Sheffield City Council has helped a higher number of families get the place they preferred by providing 60 extra places for children in reception classes for September 2017. The new through school being built in the North East of Sheffield, will provide an additional 60 reception places when it opens in September 2018. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for
Children, Young People and Families, said: “Despite the rise in school numbers and the pressure on primary places I’m pleased that Sheffield continues to perform well for its families. “However my heart goes out to those children and families who have not got their school of choice, I understand and know how upsetting that can be, that’s why we are continuing to build new schools to provide places across the City so in the future all families can get their school preference. “I would urge anyone who is not happy with their school place to get in touch with our admissions team as soon as possible for advice.” Children who were not allocated any of their three preferences have either been referred to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest primary school with places available. Information and advice is available for anyone not satisfied with the school they have been allocated. Parents also have the right to appeal. Appeals take place in June and July.

PROPERTY CORNER
PROPERTY - A GLOBAL MARKET
Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son The reason I have chosen this topic for my article this month is that there have been a number of contacts from all around the world interested in investing in property here in Sheffield and the North. I have had contact from the Middle East to include Bahrain, Saudi, UAE, China, Eastern Europe, Switzerland, India and even Australia. It is interesting when you receive such a call. For example I had a call from Australia and I suggested that the gentleman had had a look at the property in question by driving by. He pointed out that he was in Australia. I believe property for some investors is certainly becoming a global commodity such as gold, shares and precious metals.
South Asians who will resonate strongly with this scenario. On the other hand if you were fortunate enough to survive the legal processes and were able to sell that a lot of these people are choosing to invest in the country. What this does to the land economy in the countries that were reliant on property investors from abroad is the market just collapses and from what I hear it is beginning to happen. Looking at why people from fairly strong countries are choosing to invest in this country the answer is very simple. We have a stable political system that has stood the test of time. Investors feel their investment safe to political changes. Secondly the economic climate although subject to fluctuation on the whole is stable. Thirdly we are a property infatuated nation which is reflected in prices and returns. For example London, I believe over 50% of the buyers are from overseas. Properties are marketed in the Far East which are bought off plan.
There are various reasons given for why this country is popular. One of the key considerations is that our land and property system and law safeguards purchasers. It is a safe place to buy. Why is this important? It is because in many countries especially in the emerging it economies property sale/purchase is fraught with difThe trend for investing in this country has now started to spread ficulty. out of London and is quite evident in Manchester, Leeds and even Many people from South Asia have tremendous challenges when Sheffield. Britons Are The World’s Biggest Online Spenders British households are the biggest online spenders in the world, according to a report. It highlights the boom in internet shopping in the UK, which has devastated high street retailers and led to a surge in delivery vans on the roads. According to trade body UK Cards Association, online spending has jumped by 28% in two years. Last year households spent £154 billion online or £422 million a day. In 2014 the total was £120 billion. And this excludes the £44 billion spent with foreign giants such as Amazon and Apple iTunes, because the transactions are processed overseas. According to the UK Cards Association, Britain has the largest e-commerce market in Europe and ranks third in the world for the total amount of online sales - behind only China and the US. This is despite China's population of more than 1.3 billion being 20 times as big as the UK's. But the surge in online spending has taken its toll on high street retailers, as many shops struggle to compete with online giants such as Amazon and Asos. Among the casualties have been high street chain Debenhams, which yesterday revealed plans to close up to 10 stores and several warehouses, which was partly blamed on its weak online offering. The culture of shopping has changed completely - nobody carries cash around. People want to do it all online whether it's buying a holiday, or watching films on Netflix. Unless retailers are putting the right stocks on their shelves at the right price they're

in trouble. The report says consumers now go online for 23% of all clothing spending, while 67% of concert ticket spending and 61% of cinema, theatre and dance spending is done on the internet. Nearly four in every £10 spent on travel is paid for online, with 54% of spending on flights made through the Internet. Spending on entertainment accounted for one in four online card purchases. But most people still leave their homes to do their grocery shopping with groceries making up only 7 percent of online purchases. In total, 26% of all card spending was online last year, up from 22% in 2014. Shoppers made 1.8 billion purchases online last year at an average of 150 million a month - an increase of 38% from 2014. Perhaps partly because it feels less painful to part with money online, the average transaction was £85 - more than double the £38 spent in store.
investors along with New York, Paris and many other capitals of the world. Another trend in world property investment is tourism which has seen places like Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore and many others seeing a rise in investment. Tourism hubs are attractive to many property investors because they attract global names in retail, hospitality and therefore provide a good return on investment. This is a topic in its own right which I will expand on in the future. Although this country is the main destination for a property investment, people from here are investing in second homes or residential investments in many parts of the world to include France, Spain, Italy and further afield in Morocco and Dubai to mention a few. As the world population becomes more footloose it is inevitable that the scenario the world is a “Global Village” will be coming into play in the property market. It is conceivable that when you are buying your next property you may well be competing with a global market as is the situation in London and many world Capitals.
Sheffield To Host First Google Digital Training Centre On British High Street Sheffield has been named as the first UK city to host Google’s first ever digital skills training centre, located on the high street. Based on Barker’s Pool in the city centre, the Digital Garage will offer free digital skills training seven days a week for six months. Attendees will be able to learn digital skills, from how to develop their web presence, grow their business or charities online, improve their career prospects and build their confidence by using online tools for the first time. More than 90% of jobs will require digital literacy in the near future and, according to the British Chambers of Commerce, 76% of businesses in the UK say they have a shortage of digital skills in their workforce. To help address the digital skills gap, Google is returning to Yorkshire for the second time after launching the Digital Garage programme in Leeds in 2015. Since then, the Digital Garage has helped give more than 150,000 people across the country the digital skills to succeed, through pop ups in Glasgow, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester and Cardiff. IPPR North research has found that over 88% of attendees of previous Digital Garage events have changed the way they run or promote their business online, with 68% saying they had seen positive results in increased sales, bookings, web traffic or social media after attending Google’s free training. Louise Haigh, Shadow Digital Economy Minister, said: “This is a major coup for Sheffield. With investment in the city centre and major businesses choosing to make Sheffield home, now could not be a better time for the leading digital business on the planet to come.
“Too many small businesses lack the digital skills needed to unlock growth because the training isn’t available. Bringing Google’s experts to Sheffield will change that and thousands of businesses will benefit during their stay. With our world-leading video games industry our ambition should be to make Sheffield the UK’s digital centre which will bring with it high-paid jobs for local people.” Edward Highfield, director of City Growth at Sheffield City Council, also commented: “We are delighted to welcome Google’s Digital Garage to Sheffield, a fantastic addition to the heart of our city centre. “We know there is still more to be done to empower people to use the internet and tackle the issues that prevent people from engaging with rapidly changing digital culture. “We encourage everyone to take full advantage of this unique opportunity, and look forward to seeing how Google can build even further on Sheffield’s reputation for growth, innovation and business success.” The Google Digital Garage will be delivered in partnership with Sheffield City Council and local partners including The Good Things Foundation, a charity that supports the digitally and socially excluded to improve their lives through digital.

Theresa May Refuses To Rule Out Income Tax And NI Rises Theresa May has all but confirmed she will drop the Conservative pledge not to raise three key taxes, as she ruled out higher VAT but declined to make a similar promise not to hike income tax and national insurance. The prime minister said she did not want to make promises she was not absolutely confident she could keep, as she also signalled she would ditch the “triple-lock” formula by which the state pension would increase each year. She was unable to promise that either of the commitments would continue, just two years after they formed a central plank of David Cameron’s 2015 election campaign. In her first long interviews of this election campaign, the prime minister told the BBC she had “absolutely no plans to increase the level of tax” and an intention to lower taxes on working families. But pressed about Cameron’s promise not to raise income tax, NI or VAT, she added: “I don’t want to make specific proposals on taxes unless
I’m sure I can deliver on those.” In a subsequent interview on she refined her position, saying: “We won’t raise VAT.” May was in a similar position when asked about the triple-lock on state pensions – a promise that it would rise by a minimum of either 2.5%, the rate of inflation or average earnings growth, whichever is the largest. Labour has promised to keep the guarantee. In a signal that it is to be dropped, potentially to pay for more social care funding, the prime minister said the state pension would continue to rise every year but “exactly how we calculate that rise” was for the manifesto. She suggested that there could be a comprehensive shakeup of social care funding, saying the government had to deal with “long-term issues about the ageing population”. The prime minister continues to use her favoured phrase about showing “strong and stable leadership”.
Call To Delay More Free Childcare Because Nurseries ‘Will Lose Money’ There are calls to halt the introduction of more free childcare for working parents in England because nursery owners claim they will lose money. Thirty hours of free care during term time is due to be offered from September for all three and four-year-olds whose parents work more than 16 hours a week and earn less than £100,000 a year. But the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) says a survey of its members shows up to one in five is planning to opt out because they will be paid considerably less than the cost of providing the places. The Government says the 30 free hours equates to £120 a week for all par-
ents who qualify over the age of 25 and £112.50 for parents aged 21-24. The association claims a shortfall in places could see 50,000 children frozen out of the scheme unless Government funding is increased or nurseries are allowed to be more flexible. They want nurseries to be able to insist that parents pay extra for things like meals, activities and trips out. The free places, which double the free hours currently available, have been piloted since last year. A Department for Education spokeswoman said the Government’s 30-hours childcare offer is already working in towns across the country.

Women and Engineering Dr A Q Khan
With increasing involvement of technology in the running of a nation, the role of an engineer has become more important and pronounced. Science and technology have become bywords for the progress of nations, but women have very little participation in this field. However, for scientific progress to be meaningful, opportunities should be open to all those with talent, without any discrimination of class, colour, creed or gender. The number of women among our scientists and engineers is abysmally low. This is because we live in a country where the general rate of literacy is around 30-35 percent and where the rate of female literacy is even lower. Gender inequality exists worldwide but the situation is far worse in our society. There are several factors that affect the participation of females in any profession. These include: social acceptance (or lack thereof) of that particular profession, family pressure at the time of career selection, discrimination during studies and at places of work, fewer job opportunities and encouragement by women already in the field. All these issues are of critical nature and merit our urgent attention. There is also the feeling that investing in women’s education or jobs is wasteful as most of them leave the field to take care of their families and that funds would be better utilised in providing opportunities to men who would stay in the field for a longer duration. Let me state my firm belief that being a woman in no way serves as a barricade in the field of engineering. In the modern world, engineering is not solely about getting in the field and getting your hands dirty. With time, technology and advancements made, it is now possible to sit at home and communicate with the world. Modern means of communication have created the concept of a global village. As a result, there has been a restructuring, in recent times, in the nature of jobs available to women. A job environment that will allow a woman to comfortably blend her pro-
fessional and personal life can now be chosen. This can be done without impairing the growth of the organisation she works for. Pakistan is a developing nation and it is no longer possible to leave half our population out of our development process. It is no longer a matter of choice. Economic realities make this an imperative issue – one to be dealt with immediately. Women’s contributions in scientific fields do not correspond to their capabilities and potential. The engineering field in particular lacks women’s participation. There is no reason why they should not prove their talent in the engineering sciences, especially when they are as intelligent and innovative as their male counterparts. We have to raise awareness through mass media campaigns about the importance of women’s contributions in the field of engineering sciences and technology. The enrolment of girls in educational institutions should be increased by giving them incentives such as scholarships to defray the costs incurred to their parents. Women have all the potential to outperform men. All they have to do is be more assertive in demanding recognition of their efforts. Women have played a remarkable role in shaping the destiny of nations. Our religion and culture also encourage women to participate in all fields of life. The role of science and technology in the progress of mankind cannot be over-emphasised. In fact, history has just been another name for the scientific evolution human society has gone through. It transformed society from a prehistoric, matriarchal one to an agrarian one which when hit by the industrial revolution gave way to present-day modernism. Now we have reached the doorstep of the information revolution that has taken over the world. Throughout these stages there is little gainsaying the fact that only science and technology proved to be the two agents of change and harbingers of modification. Unfortunately, we are not fully utilising the talents of our female population in this process. All this clearly demonstrates that no strategy for progress and prosperity can be thought of unless it is envisioned, tailored and
UK Polls Britain is heading to the polls this summer. Yet the outcome is more or less guaranteed. Meaning that Theresa May will keep her place at No 10, if the current 20-point lead currently enjoyed by the Conservatives is anything to go by. And there is nothing at this juncture to suggest otherwise. Indeed, Parliament has given its backing to triggering the contentious Article 50 (of the Lisbon Treaty). May always maintained that elections would go ahead according to schedule in 2020. So why snap polls now? The simple answer is that the prime minister wishes to circumvent 2020, in order to avoid upheaval as ‘hard’ Brexit negotiations reach their most critical stage. Thus in this illusionary game of democracy in motion — the electorate will be relegated to little more than a sideshow. Indeed, May has even said as much. Announcing the June 8 polling date, she noted that while country was coming together at this historic moment — Westminster was not. So, there we have it. This election is not so much about securing the popular vote, as it is about parliamentary rubber stamping of the May premiership. The biggest losers in all this are the Brit-

ish public. From the moment that the official Brexit vote was in — the political leadership did nothing to quash the emerging narrative: that all who voted Leave were a bunch of racist xenophobes. With the exception, that is, of Jeremy Corbyn; a man Socialist vision who has the misfortune to be leading a party largely comprised of Blaritie clingers-on. In his first interview in the post-Brexit world, Corbyn was the only political leader at pains to point out that not just the ‘will’ of the people be respected — but that the underlying reasons for their disenfranchisement be understood. He was referring to those working-class communities of the industrialised north that had been decimated by Margaret Thatcher, first, and then by her heir, Tony Blair. At that time, Corbyn — who himself voted Remain — emerged as Britain’s only statesman. And so he remains today, too. Of course, all this could have been avoided last June. David Cameron could have seen Brexit through to its logical conclusion. Or he should have done the decent thing and called a snap election there and then. But ever the new statesman, he didn’t want to risk being the chap who not only came so very close to losing Scotland — but also costing the Tories the next election after calling an In-Out referendum of his own making. So, he chose the path most travelled and passed the job on to another.
then executed by employing science and technology. However, it is ironic to see that, throughout the Muslim world, science and technology have never hit the priority list of our policymakers. Although many leaders in the Muslim world find it attractive to mention their commitment to science and technology, it has, by and large, remained mere lip service for the sake of political expediency. The spirit and commitment to actually achieving that has always been missing. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that, despite possessing an immense pool of resources (including qualified women), the Ummah by and large is still waiting for the fruits of technological revolution. An efficient education system, dearth of research and lack of infrastructure have all joined hands to block our march towards progress. Disappointing literacy rates, lack of employment opportunities and economic catastrophes are, unfortunately, all too familiar to us, which, in turn, have affected the participation of women scientists in our national development. Industries can play a vital role in solving the crucial issue of women’s participation. If they can change their way of thinking and be a little more accommodating in hiring and retaining women engineers, the rate of female employment in this sector will surely increase. If industries make a conscious effort to look into and solve the problems faced by women in this profession, they will assist in taking our nation one step further on the road to success and development. There is no reason why women, possessing all the required attributes and intelligence, should not come forward and play their role in the field of engineering. What we need to do is to make women more aware of the benefits of acquiring an engineering education and highlight the role they can play in the development of mankind in general and our nation in particular. While in charge of Kahuta, I had specifically employed and encouraged many young female professionals to contribute to our important work.
Driving Test Set For Major Shake-Up A major shake-up of the traditional driving test will come into force in December. A range of reforms have been outlined by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), including the need for learner drivers to understand and safely use sat-nav systems. The amount of time spent on independent driving will also be extended, while skills such as reversing round a corner will be replaced with more common scenarios – driving into a parking bay, for example. Andrew Jones, the Government’s transport minister, said lives will be saved as a result of the new changes. He commented: “We have some of the safest roads in the world but we are always looking to make them safer. “These changes announced today will help reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads and equip new drivers with the skills they need to use our roads safely. Ensuring the driving test is relevant in the 21st Century, for example the introduction of sat-navs, will go a long
way towards doing this.” The reforms will be introduced on December 4 this year, with motoring research charity the RAC Foundation suggesting they represent the biggest shake-up of the driving test since the launch of the theory examination in the mid-1990s. Road accidents remain the largest cause of death among the UK’s young people. More than a quarter of deaths between the ages of 15 and 19 are accounted for by these accidents. It is hoped the changes will be more responsive to 21st Century driving habits. For example, roughly half of motorists now own a sat-nav device. DVSA said the organisation wants to guide people through a lifetime of safe driving. It is vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they've passed their test.
Cheating Students Are Using Tiny Listening Devices Cheating students are using tiny listening devices bought on Amazon for just £50 during exams. Pupils can put the wireless earpieces in their ears and link them to a phone or mp3 player to remind themselves of some crucial answers in the exam. There are a range of devices available on websites such as Amazon and eBay including calculators that can show revision notes on screen. One such calculator is selling on Amazon for £35.99 under the name 'cheating calculator'. Neil Carmichael, chairman of the Commons education select committee, has demanded a "comprehensive solution" from the government. He told press, "I would say we should be thinking about counter-technology, and random spot checks. This trend threatens to undermine our exam system." And cross-bench peer Baroness Wolf went one step further, calling for airport-style metal detectors.

Households Pay £21.31 More For Food So Far In 2017 Due To Inflation The average UK household has lost £21.31 to higher supermarket prices so far this year as rising levels of inflation and a weaker pound mean food and household items are getting more expensive. New industry figures from Kantar Worldpanel show the price of everyday goods has risen by 2.3% compared to this time last year, reflecting wider inflation levels in the UK. And this looks set to continue, with the Bank of England expecting inflation to climb to around 2.8% by the end of the year and some analysts predicting it could even breach the 3% mark. The weakness in sterling following the Brexit vote has led to increased costs for producers, distributors and often the supermarkets themselves, and these hikes are being passed on to the consumer through higher prices or the reduction in size of some products. The level of promotional spend has gone back to levels not seen since before the 2008/09 economic crisis. There’s also been a shift away from multi-buy to simpler price cuts, which is in tune with shopper needs to make it easier to manage their basket spend. With wage growth unlikely to keep pace with the hike in costs, families may be looking for cheaper alternatives during the weekly shop, a trend which is already emerging; own-branded products have taken 5% of market share from their branded rivals during the past 12 weeks. This sentiment is also reflected in statistics from consumer research company Neilsen, which found that just over a quarter of the money spent at UK supermarkets so far this year went on cut-price products or multi-buy offers - the lowest levels since 2006.

NHS ‘Faces A Shortage Of Up To 42,000 Nurses After Brexit’
Children Crammed Into ‘Super-Sized’ School Classes
The NHS faces a shortage of up to 42,000 nurses just six years after Brexit, according to a leaked Government projection. The worst case scenario has been produced by civil servants to reflect what could happen if EU and non-EU nurses stop coming to the UK in 2019. The shortage of nursing staff would be between 26,000 and 42,000 by 2025/26, according to Department of Health forecasts reported in the Health Service Journal. According to the journal, the report said there is a “severe risk of under-supply if immigration rules change and international inflows stop”. Ministers were reportedly shown the forecast in March. This is a large problem that is coming at us quickly and we need to move fast. What we are not seeing is any real action, say the Royal College of Nursing. A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said they were “focused on workforce planning to ensure the NHS has the staff it needs to continue to provide good care”. The news comes as figures suggest the closure of GP practices has hit record levels - forcing 265,000 patients to change surgeries last year. Data shows 57 surgeries closed completely last year - with another 34 closing after merging with another practice.
Jeremy Corbyn now on the election campaign claimed Tory education policy means children are being crammed “like sardines” into “super-sized” school classes. The Labour leader claims Government figures show more than 40,000 primary school children in England were taught in classes of 36 or more last year, up from 38,500 in 2015. A total of 16,655 primary pupils were being taught in class sizes of 40 or greater while nearly half a million were being taught in classes containing between 31 and 35 children. And Mr Corbyn claims there were 109 primary schools with more than 800 pupils in 2016, compared with just 16 in 2010 when the Tories came to power. “Seven years of Tory failure and broken promises have left our schools in a terrible state. Hundreds of thousands of our children are paying the price, crammed into classrooms like sardines” said the leader of the Labour Party Mr Corbyn claims that in secondary schools there were nearly 305,000 pupils in classes with more than 31 pupils, 18,000 of which were in classes with 36 or more. Labour’s shadow education secretary, Corbyn ally Angela Rayner, is attacking the Government for approving more than 130 new free schools in April. And the Conservative general election manifesto is expected to contain more proposals for Mrs May’s flagship policy of more grammar schools for England. "This situation is becoming unsustainable - too many children are being taught in classes which are simply too big,” says Ms Rayner. “The system for school place planning is broken.”

3 Countries To Pilot First Malaria Vaccine From 2018 Ghana, Kenya and Malawi will pilot the world’s first malaria vaccine from 2018, offering it for babies and children in high-risk areas as part of real-life trials, the World Health Organization said. The injectable vaccine, called RTS,S or Mosquirix, was developed by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline to protect children from the most deadly form of malaria in Africa. In clinical trials it proved only partially effective, and it needs to be given in a four-dose schedule, but is the first regulator-approved vaccine against the mosquito-borne disease. “Information gathered in the pilot will help us make decisions on the wider use of this vaccine. Combined with existing malaria interventions, such a vaccine would have the potential to save tens of thousands of lives in Africa” said the WHO’s African regional director.
Global efforts in the last 15 years cut the malaria death toll by 62 percent between 2000 and 2015. The WHO pilot programme will assess whether the Mosquirix’s protective effect in children aged 5 to 17 months can be replicated in real-life. Each of the three countries will decide on the districts and regions to be included in the pilots, the WHO said, with high malaria areas getting priority since these are where experts expect to see most benefit from the use of the vaccine. RTS,S was developed by GSK in partnership with the non-profit PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative and part-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Every year vaccines avert 2 to 3 million deaths from diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and measles.
UK Motorways ‘Set To Welcome Driverless Vehicles The UK’s motorways could welcome driverless cars as early as 2019, a group of technology companies has suggested. Called the Driven Consortium, the group is aiming to trial autonomous vehicles between London and Oxford, with the cars due to perform “all safety-critical driving functions”. The Government will provide funding of £8.6 million towards the project, which will also review data protection, cyber security, and the ways in which driverless cars should be insured. A fleet of six autonomous vehicles, which are able to communicate with each other, will feature in the project. Overall, a sum of £100 million is being invested by the Government in autonomous driving technology, to ensure the right infrastructure is in place.
A so-called “cluster of excellence” is being created along the M40 corridor as part of this investment. A range of trials are taking place around the world to push self-driving technology forward. In one high-profile example, London residents were recently given the opportunity to travel in a driverless shuttle near the capital’s O2 Arena complex. The infrastructure behind driverless cars could be key to their success. Recent research from the RAC Foundation suggested that higher standards of road maintenance will be required if the use of these vehicles becomes widespread. In particular, the organisation warned of the potentially damaging impact potholes could have.
UKIP Calls For Ban On Burqa The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has announced that it will include a pledge in its general election manifesto to ban the burqa or full-face veils worn by some Muslim women in public. Party leader Paul Nuttall launched what he calls an “integration agenda” ahead of the upcoming snap general election on June 8. He is also set to propose outlawing Sharia law — the religious rules that form part of Islamic tradition. The party’s manifesto suggest that anyone with evidence of female genital mutilation will be bound by law to inform the police. Other UKIP policies unveiled ahead of the 8 June general election include:

Medical practitioners having the right to waive patient confidentiality and report cases of abuse of children The Crown Prosecution Service pursuing the prosecution of parents of FGM victims Crimes where race is a factor, such as in the Rotherham child sexual exploitation cases, treated as hate crimes A ban on Sharia law and the setting up of a legal commission to disband Sharia courts Ensuring all official documents are in English. Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage proposed a burqa ban in 2010. But the party later dropped the policy, and it did not appear in its 2015 manifesto. Full-face veils are already banned in public in some European countries, including France.

The Queen’s Tastes The Queen's favourite breakfast cereal is Special K. She has it with whole milk. She doesn't care so much for pasta, potatoes, or garlic. But positively adores her chocolate biscuit cake - so much so that it travels with her, along with one of her sous chefs. Her Majesty is unquestionably particular in her desires. She is after all the Queen. She even has her £1,000 shoes worn in by a maid before her feet even go near them. If you thought there might be an area where even the Queen didn't have a specialism, you'd be mistaken. Everything, it is apparent, must be in order. Queen Elizabeth II gets her socks from a company which makes luxury socks starting from £17 and can cost as much as £95. The Queen is also famous for her off-the-wall hat collection. When it comes to her other accessories, she keeps things simple. Take, for instance, her practical black handbag. Almost every single time the queen appears in public, you'll see a small patent-leather purse hanging off her left arm. She reportedly owns 200 such handbags, and all of them are made by London-based leather

goods company Launer. She has two favourite styles from their collection. The first, Traviata, costs $2,060. It's lined with suede and there's a mirror inside, because even monarchs have to touch up their lipstick now and again. And it's probably not a coincidence that her other reported favourite style is the $2,242 "Royale." Launer holds what's known as a Royal Warrant. This means that the Queen has given the company permission to publicly say that they sell things to the royal family. In order to get one, a company must provide their goods or services to the royals for at least five years. It's a tradition that dates back to the 12th century - companies have always been eager to compete for the monarchy's business. During her 65-year reign, the Queen's given Royal Warrants to companies like Elizabeth Arden, Cadbury, and Office Depot. She awarded one to Launer back in 1968, and it seems she hasn't stopped carrying their handbags since. That's some serious brand loyalty.
Donald Trump Has Worst Poll Approval Rating At 100 Days Than Any President Since 1945 As Donald Trump completes his 100th day in the White House, the Republican is suffering the lowest approval ratings than any President since 1945. Compared to his Democrat and Republican predecessors since the Second World War, no President has dipped as low so early on in their first term as Mr Trump, who has an approval rating of 42 per cent. When Barack Obama was approaching his first 100 days, he had 69 per cent approval, exactly the same as the average approval rating for past Presidents at this stage in their first term. Business tycoon
Trump has significant challenges ahead. While six in 10 people surveyed doubt his honesty and trustworthiness, and see him out of touch with their problem, more than half of Americans (56 per cent) believe he has not achieved a lot in his first 100 days. The first 100 days is normally seen as a President’s honeymoon period. Although Mr Trump’s low rating at 100 days is significant, it is not necessarily predictive of his ratings for the rest of his time in office or whether he will win a second term.
Left Handed? That Might Explain The Car Crash It's official: Right-handed people are better drivers. A study has found that left-handed drivers are more likely to get a speeding fine and cause more accidents. They are, however, more likely to pass their driving test at their first attempt. Researchers found that lefties get 50 percent more speeding fines than right-handed motorists, are more likely to get parking fines, and more likely to be involved in major accidents. Some 28% of left-handers said they had received a speeding fine, compared to 19% of right-handers. And 26% of left-handers have received a parking fine compared to 23% of right-handers. Left-handers are involved in more serious car accidents - having an average of nine significant incidents during their 60-year 'driving life-time', compared to eight for right-handed motorists. The study, commissioned by Privilege Car Insurance, concluded, "Right-handers rule the road. Right-handed people are better drivers than their left-handed counterparts."
But it added, "Overall, though, left-handers are more likely to pass their test first time round. They also tend to have fewer minor bumps and scratches in the car than right-handers." Figures suggest one in eight people favour their left-hand over their right. Last year a study by psychologists from the UK and Italy found that left-handers are better at maths. Academic studies have also noted a disproportionately high number of artists, scientists, musicians and sportsmen are left-handed. Barack Obama, David Cameron, Sir Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Julius Caesar, Michelangelo, Pele, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie are among the ranks of left-handers. One Psychologist said, "When it comes to driving, it's likely that both cars and road furniture in the form of signs, roundabouts, and more, have all been designed with an unconscious bias in favour of the right-handed driver."

Plastic Eating Caterpillars, Can Eat Away Waste Mr Shumile J. Chishty Researchers have discovered that a caterpillar usually bred for use as fishing bait is capable of biodegrading plastic shopping bags made from polyethylene. The wax worm, which is the larvae of the great wax moth, is well known as a pest to beekeepers. Now, their plastic-eating abilities have been discovered, by chance, when a researcher from the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria (CSIC) in Spain was removing the parasites from honeycombs in her hives, and there she had discovered the ‘’plastic-eating caterpillars.’’ In a study carried out in collaboration with the University of Cam-
bridge, around 100 wax worms were exposed to a bag from a UK supermarket. After 40 minutes, holes had started to appear and after 12 hours, there was a 92g reduction in the mass of plastic from the bag. This degradation rate is ‘’extremely fast’’, say the researchers, giving the example of a bacteria that was reported last year to biodegrade some plastics at a rate of just 0.13g a day. This discovery could be an important tool for helping to get rid of the polyethylene plastic waste accumulated in landfill sites and oceans. To confirm the plastic wasn't just being chomped on by the worms, and that they were actually breaking down polymer chains in the plastic, the researchers mashed up some of the worms and smeared them on polyethylene bags. The test gave them similar results to the one with the live worms. The scientists believe the worms' mysterious plasticdegrading skills are likely related to the way in which they digest beeswax. They speculate that digesting beeswax and polyethylene involves breaking similar types of chemical bonds. The caterpillar produces something that breaks the chemical bond, perhaps in its salivary glands or bacteria in its gut. The next steps for scientists will be to try and identify the molecular processes in this reaction and see if they can isolate the enzyme responsible. The research could lead to a large-scale method of breaking down plastic waste that finds its way into rivers and oceans, endangering wildlife. Low-density polyethylene plastic bags

take around 100 years to decompose completely, while the toughest plastic bags can take even longer. In October 2015, a 5p charge was introduced in the UK in an attempt to dramatically reduce plastic bag use and encourage shoppers to carry reusable bags. The charge applies at all retailers with more than 250 employees, with supermarkets being the main target. In the six months after the charge was introduced, the number of bags given out was estimated to have dropped by around 83 per cent, so if we have these ‘plastic-eating caterpillar’s’ then this will help to reduce the extra waste in the environment by an estimate of 45%.
‘Butcher Of Kabul’ Demands Peace In First Speech For 20 Years Afghan warlord and former Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has urged the Taliban to lay down its weapons and join a “caravan of peace”. Returning to public life after more than 20 years in exile, Hekmatyar told militants to “stop the pointless, meaningless and unholy war” and “join hands to… bring peace in Afghanistan.” Known widely as the 'Butcher of Kabul’, Hekmatyar was accused of killing thousands of people when his fighters fired on civilian areas of the Afghan capital during the 1992-96 civil war. The 69-year-old, who leads the militant group Hizb-i-Islam, later fled Kabul after the Taliban came to power in 1996 and was designated as a “global terrorist” by the US. During his time in hiding, he claimed British troops were deployed to Afghanistan “to please the White House” and described Prince Harry as a “jackal” who “kills innocent Afghans while he is drunk”. “I want a free, proud, independent and Islamic Afghanistan. Come for God’s sake, come and give up fighting which the victims of this war are Afghans”
US-based travel reviewer website TripAdvisor presented its 2017 "World's Best Destination" Award to Indonesia's resort island of Bali. Award for Bali was announced last month, resulting from its traveller choice programme conducted in a 12-month period. The title makes Bali the first Asian destination to earn the title, surprisingly brushing aside London, Paris, Rome, New York, Barcelona and Phuket which were listed in TripAdvisor's top 10 destinations. Besides Bali, TripAdvisor also put Lombok, a destination near Bali, as one of the best 10 Asian destinations this year. TripAdvisor reviews three main categories of accommodation, tour attractions and restaurants. Bali is an island and province of Indonesia. The province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller neighbouring islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.
says Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. In September, Hekmatyar struck a peace deal with Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, paving the way for his return to the country and prompting the UN to remove his name from its Islamic State and al-Qaeda sanctions list. Mr Ghani said the warlord’s return to Afghanistan “will have remarkable effects on peace, stability, prosperity and development”. Afghanistan’s chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, added that Hekmatyar was now “in his own country and on his own soil, proudly among his own people”. The peace deal has been criticised by some Afghans and human rights groups for the pardon it granted to Hekmatyar and many of his fighters. Human Rights Watch spokeswoman Patricia Gossman described it as an “affront” to victims of abuses and said the warlord’s return “will compound the culture of impunity”. “Afghan people have also welcomed this move too. We hope that this would be an example for others” - Afghanistan’s chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah.
Turkey Referendum Votes May Have Been Manipulated As many as 2.5 million votes could have been manipulated in the Turkey referendum which saw a narrow “yes” vote to grant expanded presidential powers, according to observers. The Council of Europe, which monitored the referendum, had already claimed it was an uneven contest as the “yes” side had dominated campaign coverage, with the arrest of journalists and the closure of media outlets silencing other views. Monitors had been prevented from entering voting locations in some locations and also raised concerns over videos on social media which appeared to show people voting more than once. A last-minute decision by the Turkish election authority to allow ballot envelopes without the official stamp was illegal.
“The people’s will has been reflected at the ballot box, and the debate is over. Everyone should respect the outcome, especially the main opposition” said Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. The pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party has said it presented complaints about unstamped ballots affecting three million voters. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed criticism of the referendum. He refuted concerns raised by international monitors from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), telling them to “know your place”. Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said rumours of voting irregularities were a vain effort to cast doubt on the result.

Saudi Arabia Bans 50 Names Owing To Religious Contradictions The interior ministry of Saudi Arabia has banned 50 Barrah, Abdul Nabi, Abdul Rasool, Sumuw (highness), names owing to the fact of their contradiction to the religion or the culture of the Kingdom. After the orders being issued, the parents within the Kingdom will reportedly no longer be able to name their children by names such as Linda, Alice, Elaine or Binyamin. Apart from western names, a few religious names have also been banned because of the fact that the Kingdom considers them inappropriate, or blasphemous. According to Gulf News, the list of names issued by the ministry fall into three categories, those that offend perceived religious sensibilities, those that are affiliated to royalty and those that are of non-Arabic or non-Islamic origin. Moreover, there are also some names that do not fit into any of mentioned categories however have still been banned by the Kingdom. The full list of ‘banned’ names as reported by Gulf News include Malaak (angel), Abdul Aati, Abdul Naser, Abdul Musleh, Binyamin, Naris, Yara, Sitav, Loland, Tilaj,
Al Mamlaka (the kingdom), Malika (queen), Mamlaka (kingdom), Tabarak (blessed), Nardeen, Sandy, Rama (Hindu god), Maline, Elaine, Inar, Maliktina, Maya, Linda, Randa, Basmala (utterance of the name of God), Jibreel (angel Gabriel), Abdul Mu’een, Abrar, Iman, Bayan, Baseel, Wireelam, Nabi (prophet), Nabiyya (female prophet), Amir (prince), Taline, Aram, Nareej, Rital, Alice, Lareen, Kibrial and Lauren.
Britain’s Biggest Dog A seven-foot Great Dane who weighs the same as a baby elephant could be Britain's heaviest dog. The huge hound, called Balthazar, tipped the scales at 15st 6lbs during a recent trip to the vets. And he measures a whopping 3ft 3in from his paw to his shoulder but is 7ft from his nose to his tail. Now his owners say they are shocked at how big their five-year-old pooch has become. The enormous hound chomps his way through two and a half stone of dog food every two weeks - costing his owners a staggering £108 every month.

Obesity May Shut Down Clock In The Cardiovascular System Obese individuals typically suffer more medical problems than their leaner counterparts. They are more likely to be diagnosed with insulin resistance, diabetes, increased stress hormones, hypothyroidism, and sleep apnea. Researchers have also found the potential for something else, using an animal model. They have found that a master clock gene -- which regulates the cardiovascular system -- does not fluctuate regularly as it does in non-obese animals. This means that a key gene clock of the cardiovascular system does not work properly when obesity is present. Humans and animals are essentially programmed to physiologically respond to a day/night cycles based on the 24-hour rotation of the planet. The body has been trained through evolution to respond to day cues by eating and perusing activities and to rest and sleep cues during darkness. Indeed, there is a molecular basis that precisely controls rhythms, a group of genes dubbed the circadian clock, including one molecule also aptly named 'Clock'. In obese individuals, the natural circadian rhythms are believed to be dis-
rupted. Obese individuals frequently eat at irregular times, and especially late at night. In addition, they often suffer from sleep apnea, which disturbs their sleep rhythm thus causing them to miss a good night's sleep. Shift workers tend to be obese because their physiological requirements are
backwards (breakfast may start at 10:00 p.m.) and swing shift workers (who work a week on the day shift followed by a week on the night shift) are predisposed to obesity because their physiological cues "swing" back and forth thus interrupting the natural circadian rhythms.
Parents As Bad Role Models One in three children has had to ask their parents to stop constantly checking their mobile phones. A poll revealed that a third of youngsters thought their parents were bad role models who kept looking at phones and tablets - even if their children asked them not to. Experts say they are 'shocked' by the poll, commissioned by Digital Awareness UK and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), which represents leading private schools. More than a third of the 2,000 children surveyed said they had asked their parents to stop looking at their devices and 46% of those that did say it made no difference. Around one in five said the use of mobile devices stopped
their families from enjoying each other's company, and 82% said they should be banned at dinner. Only 10% of the 3,000 parents polled thought the time they spent on smartphones and tablets concerned their children - but 43% admitted they thought they spent too much time online. The survey found half of pupils worried about not getting enough sleep because they struggled to put their own phones away. Many admitted they would not mind stricter rules and wanted their parents to be better role models. Some schools are already holding workshops for parents, after it emerged that around 90 percent of pupils spend between 10 and 15 hours a day online.

UK Plain Cigarette Pack Law Seen Cutting Number Of Smokers By 300,000 The introduction of plain packaging for tobacco cigarettes sold in Britain from this month could cut the number of smokers in the country by another 300,000 within a year, researchers said. Based on observational evidence and a review of more than 50 experimental studies on the potential impact of plain packs, experts from said they appear to diminish the appeal of tobacco and help reduce smoking prevalence. Australia was the first country in the world to implement standardised packaging of tobacco products, in December 2012, and data collected since then suggest the new measure led to an extra 0.5 percent a year decline in the number of smokers there. We are not able to say for sure what the impact would be in the UK, but if the same magnitude of decrease was seen.. as was observed in Australia, this would translate to roughly 300,000
No number of players to reach the milestone of 10,000 Test runs at an older age than Younis Khan, who got there at 39 years and 145 days. The previous oldest was Shivnarine Chanderpaul who got there at 37 years and 254 days. Sunil Gavaskar, Allan Border and Steve Waugh also got there after their 37th birthdays.
88.06 Younis’ average against India – his best against any opposition. He scored 1321 runs in 17 innings with five hundreds and four fifties, all between 2005 and 2007. Against all four subcontinent teams, he has a combined average of 63.25 – second only to Sangakkara (72.36) among batsmen with 3000-plus runs.
116 Tests played by Younis to reach the landmark. Only Brian Lara (111) took fewer matches, while Kumar Sangakkara also played 115. In terms of innings, Younis comes sixth. The fastest in terms of innings were Lara, Sangakkara and Tendulkar (195 innings each). For Pakistan, Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq played more Tests than Younis, but scored over 1000 runs fewer than him.
3 Bowlers off whom Younis has scored 300 or more runs – the joint-most by a batsman since 2001. Younis has 300-plus runs against Rangana Herath (334), Harbhajan Singh (332) and Anil Kumble (331). Hashim Amla is the other batsman to score those many against three different bowlers: James Anderson, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Broad.
53.09 Younis’ average after he was dismissed for 58, the sixth-best when completing 10,000 runs (at the end of the match). Ricky Ponting had the highest average after the Test in which he reached the landmark – 58.72. Younis’ average is the highest among all Pakistan players to play more than 10 Test innings.
5 Centuries in the fourth-innings for Younis – the most among all players. He scored 1454 runs when chasing at an average of 53.85. Only Geoff Boycott (58.76) and Gavaskar (58.25) had a better average in the fourth innings among the 27 batsmen who scored 1000-plus runs.
70 Sixes hit by Younis – the most among all bats3 Batsmen to have scored a triple-century by the men at completion of 10,000 runs (at end of the time they reached the 10,000-run club – Lara, match). Lara hit 69. Cook had hit only 10, the Jayawardene and Younis. Sangakkara got one af- least. Younis is second on the all-time sixes list for Pakistan, behind Misbah’s 73. ter he reached the milestone.

fewer (UK) smokers. The review found signs that more people were trying to quit smoking as a result of plain cartons, rising from 20.2% before to 26.6% after introduction. There was also evidence that standardised packs were less attractive to those who did not smoke, making it less likely that they would start. However, the researchers say variations in the way countries are introducing standardised packs may affect the outcomes. Some allow different colours, slightly different carton shapes and the use of descriptive words such as “gold” or “smooth”. “Smoking kills 100,000 people in the UK every year, so we support any effective measure which can help reduce this devastating impact,” say Cancer Research UK.
‘Best Ever’ Messi Turns Tables On Madrid With 500th Goal Lionel Messi struck his 500th Barcelona goal with almost the last kick of the game to blow the La Liga title race wide open with a thrilling 3-2 win at Real Madrid. Messi had broken a three-year goalless drought

against Madrid to cancel out Casemiro’s opener for Madrid in the first-half. Messi had the final say with a brilliant finish deep into stoppage time to lift Barcelona’s hopes of a third straight La Liga title. Victory takes Barca top of the table thanks to their better head-to-head record with both sides locked on 75 points, but Madrid have a game in hand. “He is the best player for me in history and I have seen a lot of football,” said Barca boss Luis Enrique as he celebrated victory in his final Clasico in charge. “In modern football when everyone is tactically and physically better he still makes the difference. “The fact he has scored his 500th goal shows all of us as Barca fans are lucky to have him identified with the club.”
Trump Thought Being President Would Be Easy He misses driving, feels as if he is in a cocoon, and is surprised how hard his new job is. US President Donald Trump reflected on his first 100 days in office with a wistful look at his life before the White House. “I loved my previous life. I had so many things going,” Trump told Reuters in an interview. A wealthy businessman from New York, Trump assumed public office for the first time when he entered the White House on Jan. 20 after he defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an upset. More than five months after his victory and as he approaches the 100-day mark of his presidency,

the election is still on Trump’s mind. Trump, who said he was accustomed to not having privacy in his “old life,” expressed surprise at how little he had now. And he made clear he was still getting used to having 24-hour Secret Service protection and its accompanying constraints. “You’re really into your own little cocoon, because you have such massive protection that you really can’t go anywhere,” he said. When the president leaves the White House, it is usually in a limousine or an SUV. He said he missed being behind the wheel himself. “I like to drive,” he said. “I can’t drive any more.”

Female Islamic Clerics Issue Rare Child Marriage Fatwa Female Islamic clerics in Indonesia have issued an unprecedented fatwa against child marriage. The fatwa, which is not legally binding but will be influential, was issued after a three-day congress of female clerics in the country. The clerics urged the government to raise the minimum legal age for women to marry to 18 from the current 16. Indonesia is a majority Muslim country and has among the highest number of child brides in the world. According to the UN's children office Unicef, one in four women in Indonesia marries before the age of 18. Fatwas are issued regularly in Indonesia, but usually by the Indonesian Ulema Council - the highest Islamic authority in the country which is made up almost entirely of men. Hundreds of women descended on Cirebon, on Java Island, for the Indonesian KUPI Women's Ulema Congress. Most of the clerics - experts in Islamic sacred law and theology - were from Indonesia, but speakers travelled from as far away as Kenya, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to take part in the conference, said to be the first major gathering of female Muslim clerics. Female clerics, or "ulema", have existed in Indonesia for hundreds of years, but their role has been played down previously. Nowadays, they help empower their communities and lead educational institutes, organisers say. It is hoped the congress will highlight the vital role they play. Steering committee chairman Badriyah Fayumi told the BBC: "Through this conference, we want to state that female clerics exist,
and have been proven to contribute, and this is the time to acknowledge their existence, and to give an appreciation for the... contribution of the female clergy." The committee will now present its recommendations to the relevant groups - including the government - which will then decide on whether or not to take them any further. The fatwa called underage marriage "harmful" and said preventing it was mandatory. Female clerics know the issues and obstacles women face, we can take action and do not just wait for the government to protect these children," said the committee. The female clerics cited studies which highlight that many Indonesian child brides are not allowed to continue their education and half the marriages end in divorce. The child marriage fatwa was one of a series issued during the congress. There were also edicts against women being sexually abused, and environmental destruction.
What Happens To Your Food When A Fly Lands On It Flies get a lot of bad press - and it's easy to see why. They love frequenting the air around rubbish bins - the more pungent the better. They also seem to have a penchant for excrement, but don't do anything useful or fascinating with it in the same way a dung beetle might. It's harsh but fair to associate them with bad smells and rotting matter. Now that summer is supposedly not too far away, we can expect to see a lot more of the six-legged pests. Most of us will swat away a fly who comes a little too close - and with good reason. This should especially apply if one lands on whatever it is we're eating. Partly because, no, we don't like to share but also because of what a fly will do to our tasty morsel. Arguably the most unpalatable aspect of a fly landing on your food is the fact it will nearly always do a fly vomit on it too. This is because a fly can't chew, so instead they eject digestive enzymes onto the food before eating it up again. Also, on average a fly carries more than 200 forms of harmful bacteria. This is owing to their love of landing on items such as rotting food and faecal matter, a pest
control expert has revealed. Flies have thousands of tiny hairs on the arms and legs which allow those dangerous germs to transfer to your food if one lands on it. "They only need to touch your food for a second for their legs or the tiny hairs all over their bodies to transfer germs from all those nasty things they eat onto what you are eating," said an entomologist. "And since flies can transfer serious, contagious diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, it is probably best if you avoid eating things that a fly lands on." So don't feel bad about swatting one away the next time it comes close to your meal.
NHS Could Ban Sugary Soft Drinks From All Hospital Shops Sugary soft drinks will be banned in hospital shops if retailers fail to cut their sales over the next 12 months. NHS England has set shops a target in a bid to make our hospitals healthier. Bottles and cans and refillable soft drinks as well as coffees made with syrup will be affected. The move will also hit fruit juices and milk drinks with added sugar. Shops must reduce sugary drink sales to just 10% of their total drink sales within a year. WHSmith, Marks & Spencer, Greggs, Subway and the Royal Volun-
tary Service have all agreed to cut sales. Sugar is related to tooth decay, type 2 diabetes, and also for children and teenagers, it’s been related to weight gain. NHS hospitals are trusted by patients, families and staff to keep them fit and well, and NHS England is helping everyone to take a big healthy step in the right direction. There has been growing pressure for measures to tackle obesity, and from next April a sugar tax is being introduced on the soft drinks industry.
Humans Change Earth’s Chemistry From Past The Grave Scientists have discovered how humans alter the chemistry of the earth after their death through their decomposition in the graves. Whether our bodies are buried or cremated, they leach iron, zinc, sulphur, calcium and phosphorus into ground that may later be used as farms, forests or parks. They are essential nutrients, but human funerary practices mean they are being concentrated in cemeteries instead of being dispersed evenly throughout nature, according to new research. This means that in some places the nutrients may be over-concentrated for optimal absorption by plants and creatures, while lacking in others. Furthermore, human bodies also contain more sinister elements, such as mercury from dental fillings. Chemical traces of decomposed bodies can frequently be very well distinguished in soil. These traces persist for a very long time, for centuries to millennia. Researchers and scientists say the effects will become more pronounced as more and more dead bodies are laid to rest. What we do today with our dead will affect the environment for a very, very long time. If there had been no cemeteries, human remains, like those of animals, would be distrib-

uted randomly for the nutrients they release to be reused "again and again, everywhere," says one researcher. But concentrating them in certain places "is something that can be regarded as not natural. It's a human impact, we are changing natural levels," they said. Now the question is: "Can we come up with a better idea (of) how to distribute these necessary elements across wider landscapes?" they added. "Certainly there is a potential to invent, to develop and to put into practice... new ways of human burial or new treatments that could be more environmentally friendly, more ecological." scientists conceded this was a "taboo" topic for many, with funerary customs deeply rooted in culture and religion. "It's a very complex matter and we are just at the start of this discussion."

Doner kebabs are a popular take-out food in the UK. The seasoned brown meat is often served in a naan or pitta bread with salad. But not a lot of people are fully sure of what the meat is made from. We have a look at some of the findings.
Eaters of halal meat eat these kebabs from outlets serving specifically halal Doner Kebabs. So, in all, this take-out food is hugely in demand. However, a Trading Standards investigation has found that Doner Kebabs served by the fast-food shops do not always contain the meat as stated on the label from suppliers. After investigating the kebab meat, they found that in 15% of the cases the meat was not all lamb as stated on the label but contained beef and in 6 cases pork was also found in the meat. In the case of the beef found in the meat, this would not please South Asian meat eaters who do not eat beef on religious or cultural grounds, and the latter finding of pork, would certainly violate rules followed by Muslims who do not eat pork in any form. Therefore, these findings will most likely be a shock to Brit-Asian people who eat these kebabs. The Trading Standards cannot blame the serving outlets for the misleading consumers and feel that the problem lies with the
information. There was no information as to whether the meat was chicken, lamb or other. Much speculation surrounds the ingredients of Doner Kebab meat, including it being made from surplus lamb off-cuts, offal, feet, ears, tongues and other unusual parts not found at a high street butcher shop. When the manufacturers make the kebab meat, it is heavily spiced, processed and re-formed into a cylinder shape, therefore, making it literally impossible to determine what parts of the animal the meat comes from or even which animals it is made from. With regards to serving of Doner Kebabs, the slices of kebab meat are carved from the rotating cylinder of meat which are heated by a circular spit behind the meat. This means that the same meat is reheated and reheated daily, until the cylinder of meat finishes. Which implies that this does not make the meat healthy to consume due to its re-heating or method of storage.
‘Jails Within Jails’ Being Built To Segregate Extremist Prisoners Three specialist units are being built in high-security jails to separate extremist inmates from the rest of the prison population. The Government is creating the “jails within jails” in a bid to tackle radicalisation, and to stop convicts with dangerous Islamist or far-right ideologies from influencing their peers. In total, the centres will be able to accommodate up to 28 extremists - and the first unit at HMP Frankland in Durham is expected to be operational within weeks. Once a prisoner is moved to one of the units, which will be completely separate from the main wing of the jail, their case will be reviewed by experts every three months to see whether the threat they pose to vulnerable inmates has sufficiently reduced. Prisons minister Sam Gyimah, says “Any form of extremism must be defeated wherever it is found, and it is right that we separate those who pose the greatest
risk in order to limit their influence over other prisoners.” A new taskforce of 100 counter-terrorism experts was launched as part of government plans to tackle “poisonous” extremism behind bars. The specialist team is designed to advise jails across England and Wales on how to deal with specific threats, and train prison workers on effective ways to deter offenders from being lured into extremism. Figures suggest that more than 1,000 prisoners are identified as extremist or vulnerable to extremism at any one time. Last year, a Government-ordered review concluded that Islamist extremism is a growing problem within jails. That assessment uncovered evidence of offenders expressing support for Islamic State, and “charismatic” prisoners acting as “self-styled emirs” to radicalise fellow inmates.
Uber Sets Flying Car Launch For 2020 Uber has said that it wants to launch a system of flying cars to move people around cities, with a goal of putting demonstration projects in place by 2020. The ridesharing giant announced a series of partnerships to manufacture "vertical takeoff and landing" (VTOL) vehicles and put networks in place, a system dubbed Uber Elevate. The partner cities working with Uber are Dubai and the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolis in Texas. "The goal of these partnerships is to develop a new on-demand VTOL network to enable customers in the future to push a button and get a high-speed flight in and around cities," Uber said in a statement. Urban aviation is a natural next step for Uber in the pursuit to push a button and get a ride. Uber's goal is to have the first demonstration network in place in Dubai for the 2020 World Expo in that city, and another pilot in Dallas the same year ahead of "full-scale operations" in the Texas region by 2023. The announcement came a day after Silicon Valley
"flying car" startup Kitty Hawk, reportedly backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, released a video of its airborne prototype and announced plans for deliveries of a "personal flying machine" this year. The Uber plan also includes partnerships for "vertiports" for the flyers to take off and land, along with changing stations for the transporters, which are expected to be mainly electric-powered. Uber has grown into the world's largest venture-backed startup, with a valuation estimated at some $68 billion despite ongoing obstacles with regulators and taxi operators. In addition to ridesharing in some 80 countries, Uber is also testing self-driving cars in three US metro areas. Uber's growth so far has not been dented by a series of embarrassing disclosures about a culture of sexism, cut-throat workplace tactics and covert use of law enforcement-evading software.

The new Islamabad airport will be inaugurated on August 14th and is estimated to serve 4,500 people at the same time.
It Gets Harder To Sleep As You Get Older New research from UC Berkeley has revealed that sleep quality declines with age. But while previous studies have shown that older people sleep less, it’s not actually because they need less sleep. Instead, as we age our brain mechanisms change, which makes it harder for us to figure out when we’re actually tired. This in turn can make it more difficult to get a full night’s sleep. And as we know, lack of sleep can lead to some pretty serious health implications.
www.ilmnews.com
It’s almost like a radio antenna that’s weak. The signal is there, but the antenna just can’t pick it up. The decline begins in your late 20s, and by the time you’re 50, you spend half as much time in deep sleep than you did 30 years before. Study authors are hopeful that this research breakthrough might help the development of medication and alternative therapies to improve the quality of our sleep as we age.
