14 YEARS TO FIX BRITAIN’S POTHOLES AS BACKLOG GROWS AND REPAIR BUDGETS SHRINK Disgruntled motorists have been warned the misery caused by potholes is going to get even deeper. Fixing all those annoying craters on Britain’s roads will take 14 years, an investigation has revealed.

The repairs backlog has grown from 10.9 years a decade ago.

Councils fix almost two million potholes a year – an average of 12,000 potholes for each local authority.

But the average English council faces a £69 million estimated one-time cost to brings its roads up to a reasonable condition.

Town hall bosses say speedy action is needed to tackle the backlog being caused by huge funding cuts.

The national campaign aims to help people reduce their energy use and bills as well as make the most of all the financial support they are entitled to.

It will focus on raising public awareness about the potential benefits of switching energy suppliers or tariffs and will educate people on how to best make homes more energy efficient.

Around 43% of people wrongly believe switching energy suppliers won’t save them money.

However statistics reveal an average UK household could save around £300 by switching. When surveyed, a fifth of people said they’d turn to credit cards or work an extra 10 hours if they needed that amount of money.

The Royal Mint has urged the country to prepare for the introduction of the new £1 coin amid fears that it will cause chaos for shoppers and retailers.

The 12-sided coin, which has been introduced because the current version is vulnerable to counterfeiters, will enter circulation in March 2017.

The Royal Mint has warned businesses they now need to begin training their staff and adapting their equipment in order to deal with the new coin.

But the Local Government Association has said updating parking meters will be a “further cost burden” to councils, while the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales said the “financial hit” on small enterprises will divert their attention away from running their businesses.

Payphones, fruit machines, supermarket trolleys,

launderette washing machines, vending machines and lockers are also among the pieces of equipment that will need to be revamped as the new coin is introduced.

Around 500,000 vending machines will need to be upgraded, according the Automatic Vending Association, which estimates there will be a cost of more than £30 million to the vending industry. The British Parking Association, meanwhile, has warned that the cost of updating around 100,000 parking machines will be at least £50m.

However, machines will still need to be able to accept the old coin because there will be a changeover period of six months when both coins will be in circulation.

When the polymer £5 was introduced earlier this year, only 63 per cent of convenience retailers were prepared for the transition just weeks before the new note was brought in, so it’s essential the Government has a strategy in place to communicate the changes to the £1 coin effectively.

The Treasury, said the coin will “reduce the cost to business and the taxpayer,” because it will “present a significant barrier to counterfeiters. The introduction of this new £1 coin will be a highly significant event and we are working with the Royal Mint to ensure key industries are ready and to ensure a smooth transition.”

Louise Haigh Appointed Shadow Minister For The Digital Economy Sheffield MP, Louise Haigh has been appointed to a new ministerial role shadowing the digital economy brief by the Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn.

The move comes at an important time, with the Digital Economy Bill currently progressing through Parliament and Louise's first task was to scrutinise the legislation in Parliament.

Louise was previously the Shadow Minister for the Civil Service and Digital Reform where she joined with a broad coalition to stop the Government watering down the FOI Act, took the civil service to task for their under-promotion of women, stood up for civil servants whose terms and conditions were being consistently undermined and questioned how the civil service could manage Brexit with ever-diminishing resources.

Louise previously worked for a digital start-up before entering Parliament and has vowed to use that experience in her new role.

Seven Years Of Cuts Has Seen Sheffield City Council Save More Than £350M 2017/18 will be the seventh year of budget cuts at Sheffield City Council, with the cumulative spending cuts total now running to £352 million.

This is equivalent to the cost of maintaining all parks and countryside managed by Sheffield City Council an estimated 60 times over.

The savings have included a combination of cuts to funding, and the additional ‘pressures’ associated with services where demand has increased, the costs of inflation, and changes to government legislation that the Council must comply with.

Next year the council will have to make cuts of £40 million.

Councillor Ben Curran, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “Make no mistake, the cumulative impact of the last seven years of budget cuts has been huge.

We know that many people in the city have felt the impact of these cuts on their lives in a number of ways. But when we look back at these sums, it is only due to prudent financial management that people in the city have not seen a much greater impact

on the services we all value.

“Our priorities have been taking care of people, spreading the savings, and finding innovative ways to keep delivering the services people care about.

“And there is more to come. We have more savings to make, particular as the pressure on some services continues to grow and grow. The Medium Term Financial Strategy sets out the scale of the challenges facing the authority’s finances for the next five years.

Over the next five years, it is estimated that the Council’s cumulative budget gap will increase from around £40m in 2017/18 to £116m by 2021/22. This takes account of changes to the Council’s main sources of income, as well as the pressures on services.

Councillor Curran continued: “The important thing we’re lobbying the government for here is to frontload the additional Better Care Fund money that will enable us to keep up with the increased demand for services. We need this funding in order to look after the increasing number of people who are dependent on social care..”

Park Hill Development ‘Set To Be Complete In Five Years’ Award-winning urban regeneration company Urban Splash has secured a revised agreement for the final phases of Park Hill with Sheffield City Council which means they will be able to complete the project in five years.

Phase One is complete with 260 homes and 10 contemporary workspaces that are occupied with creative and digital businesses. There are currently 600 people living and working at Park Hill reflecting a mixed community that includes affordable housing, rented, owner occupiers – from young professionals to downsizers, as well as the businesses, Grace Owen Nursery and oS1 Artspace that have provided a rolling arts programme.

The revised development agreement will be split into four phases – Phases 2 to 5. Phase 2 will see Urban Splash create 210 residential properties and Phase 3 following on with the development of 330 student housing units working with an external partner. The whole scheme will deliver a total of 130,000 square foot of commercial space. Phase 4 and 5 include provision for the S1 Artspace Project, as well as open market and social housing.

Race Or Religious Hate Crimes Recorded Leap 41% Following Referendum Race or religious hate crimes recorded by police jumped by more than two fifths in the wake of the EU referendum, official figures show.

The number of racially and religiously aggravated alleged offences logged by forces in England and Wales in July was 41% higher than in the same month last year.

A Home Office report also showed that in 2015/16 the overall number of hate crimes logged by forces in England and Wales increased by nearly a fifth, with offences recorded at a rate of around 170 a day.

The main focus of the study was the 12 months from April 2015 to March 2016, but it also included a section examining the period around the EU referendum.

It confirmed there was a "sharp increase" in the number of racially or religiously aggravated offences recorded by forces following the poll.

There were 3,886 such crimes logged in July 2015, rising to 5,468 in July this year.

Data from 31 police forces showed that in the two weeks up to and including the day of the referendum on June 23, forces recorded 1,546 racially or religiously aggravated offences.

In the fortnight immediately after the poll, the number climbed by almost half to 2,241. The peak daily total between May and August was seen on July 1, when 207 alleged race or religious hate crimes were recorded.

The number fell in August, but remained at a higher level than prior to the referendum, the report said. It added that the sharp rise in offences is not replicated in non-racially or religiously aggravated equivalent offences.

In 2015/16, there were 62,518 offences recorded by the police

in which one or more hate crime strands were deemed to be a motivating factor. This was an increase of 19% compared with the 52,4651 hate crimes recorded in 2014/15.

There were increases in offences recorded for all five of the monitored hate crime strands. Of the offences recorded over the year: ::49,419 (79%) were race hate crimes ::7,194 (12%) were sexual orientation hate crimes; ::4,400 (7%) were religious hate crimes; ::3,629 (6%) were disability hate crimes; and ::858 (1%) were transgender hate crimes.

It is possible for a hate crime offence to have more than one motivating factor, meaning the numbers total more than 62,518 and 100%, the report said.

The Home Office said figures published last year show an overall decrease in hate crimes as measured by the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

This suggests that although the number of hate crimes reported to police is rising, this is largely down to more people reporting hate crime and better police recording rather than a surge in incidents, according to the department.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said: "Hatred has no place in a Britain that works for everyone and we are determined to stamp it out. I am pleased to see Government action is working and that more victims are finding the confidence to come forward to report these crimes. "Our hate crime laws are among the best in the world, but we cannot be complacent."

She said a hate crime action plan published in July "sets out how we are further reducing hate crime, increasing reporting and improving support for victims."

41% Of Young Women Expect To Face Discrimination At Work More than 4 in 10 young women believe their gender will count against them during their career, according to a survey that found only 4% of boys believe they might also face some form of career-limiting sex discrimination in the workplace.

The poll for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) reported that 41% of young women, all aged between 13 and 22, believed discrimination would hold back their careers, more than 10 times the figure for boys.

Approximately 20% of boys not only rejected concerns they might face discrimination, they said their gender would have a positive effect on their career, allowing them to earn more than their female counterparts.

The survey follows a series of reports showing that women face a higher risk of harassment and discrimination at work. A recent TUC study found that more than half of all women and nearly two-thirds of women aged 18 to 24 said they have experienced sexual harassment at work.

The building industry was singled out by young women as one of the worst offenders that was ripe for change, according to the survey.

A quarter of young women said that employing a diverse range of people was the most important factor when thinking about a company they would work for. They said it would take a female chief executive or a successful female prime minister to turn the situation around.

Is UK Still The World’s Fifth Biggest Economy?

The claim: The falling pound has made the UK the world's sixth biggest economy, down from fifth.

Reality Check verdict: The World Bank produces the rankings which are based on average exchange rates over the period. The UK has not fallen behind France so far.

Figures as diverse as Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, and Lord Livingston, the former Conservative trade minister, have said the UK has slipped down the rankings and is now the sixthlargest economy in the world.

In an article in the Telegraph, former trade minister Lord Livingston wrote: "In the long term, this is unacceptable for the sixth-largest economy (it was the fifth largest, but the fall in the pound since June means we have fallen behind France)."

Sixth place would put the UK behind the US, China, Japan, Germany and France in US dollar terms, with France having leapfrogged the UK into fifth.

It is all down to exchange rates, in theory. If the pound is almost a fifth weaker against the US dollar since the EU referendum, our annual GDP of about £1.8 trillion is worth fewer dollars, dropping us down the table.

Newspapers were full of the news that the UK had slipped to number six after the vote to leave the European Union, pointing out that if you applied the weaker pound exchange rates to the output of the economy in 2015, France did in-

deed come out ahead of the UK. But that's not how it works.

The World Bank produces the rankings. It takes official annual GDP figures and then converts them into US dollars using an average exchange rate for the whole year. The GDP figures for 2015 based on exchange rates from last year rank the UK at number five.

So will the slide in exchange rates move the UK down the World Bank's table in 2016? It might.

As a World Bank analysis of the best way to compare economies puts it: "Exchange rateconverted GDPs can be highly misleading on the relative sizes of economies and levels of material well-being."

Another way to approach the problem is to use a measure called purchasing power parity. This tracks prices across the world to adjust for the different prices we pay for the same things in different countries.

What that does is allow a fair comparison between countries that looks at the underlying size of economies without the numbers being warped by price or currency fluctuations.

On that measure, also produced by the World Bank, the UK was the ninth-largest economy in the world in 2015.

France was the 10th.

Based on the latest forecasts, the World Bank expects the UK to stay ahead of France for the whole of 2016, measured by purchasing power or by converting to US dollars.

Britain is facing a "divorce bill" of up to 20 billion euro (£18 billion) as the cost of leaving the European Union, it has been reported.

The Financial Times has calculated that more than 300 billion euros (£270 billion) of shared payment liabilities will have to be settled in Brexit negotiations.

The 20 billion euro "upper estimate" was said to cover the UK's share of continuing multi-year liabilities including 241 billion euros (£217 billion) of unpaid budget appropriations, pension liabilities of 63.8 billion euros (£57.5 billion), and other commitments totalling around 32 billion euros (£29 billion).

The FT said its analysis represented the first attempt to quantify the UK's liabilities on leaving the EU, with some officials in Brussels warning that the final figure could be higher.

The Government refused to be drawn on the report. A spokesman said: "As the Prime Minister has said, we will invoke Article 50 no later than the end of March next year. We are not going to provide a running commentary on leaving the EU."

The disclosure may cause further jitters on foreign exchange markets following a tumultuous day for the pound.

The Prime Minister has angered many Conservative backbenchers with her refusal to commit to giving MPs a vote on her Brexit strategy despite growing calls for more clarity on the plan before the formal process of leaving the EU is triggered.

During an at times heated Commons debate called by Labour, a series of Tory MPs lined up to insist that greater transparency was essential to protect British jobs, businesses and investment.

Challenged at Prime Minister's Questions, Mrs May insisted suggestions that Parliament would be unable to debate issues around Brexit were "completely wrong".

However she came under pressure from Jeremy Corbyn, who said the Prime Minister was pursuing a "shambolic Tory Brexit" to appease her backbenchers.

The Labour leader said the Government offers "no strategy for negotiating Brexit and offers no clarity, no transparency and no chance of scrutiny of the process for developing a strategy".

Rogue Landlords To Be Banned From Renting Tiny Bedrooms Rogue landlords will be banned from renting tiny bedrooms and licensing rules will be extended to cover flats above shops under Government plans The "fit and proper person" test for landlords could also be tightened up, with more stringent criminal record checks as part of a package of measures announced by Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell.

Under the plans, which will apply in England, the minimum room size in shared homes will be 6.52 square metres.

Mr Barwell said: "In order to build a country that truly works for everyone we must ensure that everyone has somewhere safe and secure to live. "These measures will give councils the powers they need to tackle poor-quality rental homes in their area. "By driving rogue landlords that flout the rules out of business, we are raising standards and giving tenants the protection

they need."

The measures build on plans set out in a discussion paper in November 2015.

A consultation on the proposals also sets out plans to ensure mandatory licensing rules apply to all shared homes with five or more people from two or more households.

They will also include flats above and below shops and other business premises - currently licensing only kicks in for homes with three or more floors, and excludes properties attached to businesses, unless they are in a three-storey building.

Landlords will also be required to provide decent storage and disposal of rubbish.

Ministers are also considering whether the current licensing rules for purpose-built student accommodation are appropriate.

Britain Fourth Best Country In World To Be Young Person Britain is the fourth best country in the world to be a young person, a new study reveals.

A global youth development index compiled by the Commonwealth Secretariat highlights the deep divide between life chances for people aged between 15 and 29 in the West and the developing world.

The wide-ranging survey studied the prospects of young people in employment, education, health, and political spheres as it examined 18 indicators including literacy, mental disorder rates, financial inclusion, and voter engagement.

While Britain scored fourth place over-all, it ranked 39 for youth health and well-being - below countries like Romania, Albania, and Mexico, but well ahead of France, which was placed 79 in that category.

Germany topped the table, with Denmark second, Australia third, while Ireland came in at 15, and the US was ranked 23.

At the other end of the spectrum, young people in the Central African Republic had the poorest life chances of the 183 countries surveyed.

With the world's youth population at an all time high of 1.8 billion people, the Commonwealth warned that investment was urgently needed to

boost the life chances for this age group in developing countries.

The report stated that the prospects for the emergence of a Generation Hope was being threatened by widespread joblessness, unequal access to health and education, and lack of political influence.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said: "The index throws down a challenge to policy-makers everywhere: without action to promote young people's empowerment, boosting opportunities for employment and opening up spaces for political dialogue, countries will be squandering their most precious resource and storing up problems for the future.

"The adolescents and young adults who make up Generation Hope have huge aspirations and enormous capabilities, but too often they face barriers in realising their potential as productive citizens.

Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son The reason I have chosen this topic for my article this month is that there have been a number of contacts from all around the world interested in investing in property here in Sheffield and the North. I have had contact from the Middle East, China and wider.

It seems that Brexit to some extent has increased activity. I am not saying this will be a longer term trend but the signs certainly are strong.

It is interesting when you receive such a call. For example I had a call from Australia some time ago which still resonates with me where I suggested the gentleman had a look at the property in question by driving by. He pointed out he was in Australia. I believe property for some investors is certainly becoming a global commodity such as gold, shares and precious metals. It is probably safe to say property is a world commodity, as the world becomes a much easier place to travel around.

There are various reasons given why this country is a popular property investment destination. One of the key considerations is that our land and property system and law safeguards purchasers.

It is a safe place to buy. Why is this important? Because in many countries, especially in the emerging economies, property sale/ purchase is fraught with difficulty.

Many people from South Asia have tremendous legal challenges when they return to manage investments. I have had many people recall stories of when they have returned to sell or manage their property they realise they are not even the official owners.

Many people will spend huge amounts of money and time trying to prove their ownership. If you are a third of fourth generation returning to claim your inheritance then the story becomes even

more difficult. Your do not know the system but more importantly you are not acquainted with the right people who could help you understand the disjointed processes. I have had people for example telling me they are giving up their property for no other reason than they do not have the time, patience or resources to engage in never ending legal battles. Some even take the extreme view that if the property is worth say £100,000 shared between four or five then it is a good economic decision not to pursue the property. I am sure there will be some readers who especially third, fourth generation south Asians who will resonate strongly with this scenario.

On the other hand if you were fortunate enough to survive the legal processes and are able to sell then a lot of these people are choosing to invest in the country. Clearly what this does to the land economy in the countries that were reliant on property investors from abroad, is the market just collapses and from what I hear it is beginning to happen in some areas of South Asia.

Looking at why people from fairly strong countries are choosing to invest in this country the answer is fairly simple. We have a stable political system that has stood the test of time. Investors feel their investment is safe to political changes. Secondly the economic climate although subject to fluctuation on the whole is stable.

Thirdly we are a property infatuated nation which is reflected in prices and returns. For example London, I believe over fifty percent of the buyers are from overseas. Properties are marketed in the Far East which are bought off plan.

The trend for investing in this country has now started to spread out from London and is quite evident in Manchester, Leeds and

even Sheffield. My thoughts are that over many years this country will become a global destination for property investors.

Another reason which is sometimes cited for property becoming a global commodity is the internet. People are now able to compare and contrast their investment opportunities in different parts of the world. People are able to conduct business much more effectively through modern communication systems. Gone are the days when an overseas investment was a logistical challenge.

If you look around the property world, London is top of the list for overseas property investors along with New York, Paris and many other capitals of the world. Another trend in the world property investment tourism which has seen places like Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore and many others, seeing a rise in investment. Tourism hubs are attractive to many property investors because they attract global names in retail, hospitality and therefore provide a good return on investment. This is a topic in its own right which I will expand on in the future.

Although this country is the main destination for property investment, people from here are investing in second homes or residential investments in many parts of the world to include France, Spain, Italy and further afield in Morocco and Dubai to mention a few.

As the world population becomes more footloose it is inevitable that “global village” scenario will be coming into play in the property market. It is absolutely conceivable that when you buy your next property you may well be competing with a purchase from anywhere in the “global village” as is the situation in London and many world capitals.

Clocks Went Back For 100th Time British clocks fell back for the 100th time at the end of October as lighter mornings and darker afternoons were ushered in.

Hands have been moving back on the clock-face since the First World War when British Summer Time (BST) was adopted as a way of maximising daylight hours.

However the model is "obsolete" and earlier nightfall leads to more fatalities on roads, according to an accident prevention group.

Instead, Britain should adopt Central European Time, which is always one hour ahead of the UK, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has said.

Currently, the UK follows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) from October to March and British Summer Time (BST) - which is GMT+1 hour - from March to October.

The system means darkness falls earlier in the day when the clocks go back on the last Sunday in October - which was October 30 this year.

Campaigners say moving the UK clocks to the European model would "save a significant number of lives" by leading to more evening light year-round. In 2015, pedestrian deaths rose from 27 in September to 42 in October, 45 in November and 58 in December with a practice which was innovative and forward-looking in 1916 but which has not been updated to its full potential 100 years later.

Child pedestrians are particularly vulnerable during the afternoon school run, when they digress on their way home and so are exposed to traffic risk for longer than their morning trip to school. During that period motorists are also tired after the day's work, concentration levels are low, and journey times are increased due to shopping and social trips. For these reasons, increased evening daylight would produce significant results in preventing accidents to children and other road users.

Ex-PM Blair Suggests Second EU Vote Britain's former prime minister Tony Blair says there was nothing preventing a second Brexit referendum and warned that the break-up would be "very, very tough" as European leaders were in an unforgiving mood.

He called on fellow "Remain" supporters to "mobilise and to organise" against proponents of Brexit, writing in The New European newspaper that "we're the insurgents now". “There is absolutely no reason why we should close off any options,” he later told BBC radio.

School Children Celebrate 10 Years Of Every Child Matters Survey Last month nearly a hundred school pupils have come together with education leaders from across the city to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Every Child Matters survey.

Since the survey began 45,000 children have been consulted on their views which are used to shape local services and school policy. As a result of feedback from the survey: Sheffield City Council and NHS Sheffield Clinical Commission Group are now working with young people to develop an anti-stigma campaign and raise awareness of emotional wellbeing and mental health issues.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have put a greater emphasis on the importance of fire escape plans in their fire education programmes.

Sheffield Young Carers have been able to provide schools with young carers with the training and resources they need.

Punishments For Drivers Who Shouldn’t Park In Disable Bays At Supermarkets Supermarket giants including Tesco, Asda and Aldi have revealed how they deal with shoppers who park in their disabled bays, when they shouldn’t- and Tesco is the harshest.

Tesco will use an app to take pictures of drivers in the wrong bays, which will then be forwarded onto a parking enforcement company, Horizon Parking. The parking firm obtains driver details from the DVLA and issues a £40 penalty notice, rising to £70 unless it is paid within 14 days.

A spokesman from Sainsbury’s said that the majority of their customers use parking spaces as they are intended.

The spokesperson for the retailer said: “Our parking attendants patrol the disabled and parent/ child spaces. Most of our customers use them as intended but if they don’t, they will in the first instance be asked to move and if they refuse, they’ll be issued with a £60 Parking Charge Notice (fine).”

Asda, meanwhile, said that they patrol their car parks 24 hours a day to deter irresponsible parkers.

An Asda spokesman said: “We monitor our car

parks 24 hours a day and do as much as we can to prevent the misuse of disabled parking and parent and child bays.

“Any customer found to be parking in a disabled bay who doesn’t have a valid blue badge or is misusing parent and child bays will receive a Parking Charge Notice.

“This is to ensure these spaces are kept available for the customers who need them the most. If customers have any questions regarding this, our colleagues in store will be more than happy to help.”

However, budget retailer Aldi said that they don’t have strict regulations.

A spokesman for the German discounter said: “We offer parent and child, and disabled car parking spaces at all of our standard stores across the UK. These spaces are positioned in a convenient location to allow easy access to the store.

“Although we don’t enforce strict regulations, these dedicated parking spaces are honoured and appreciated by the large majority of our customers.”

The Bogus Car Insurance Broker Scam A car insurance scam is becoming widespread, and it’s one that could cost you your car, your driving licence, and even your home…

What is the car insurance scam?

The scam is very simple and plays on the public’s love of a bargain and the anonymity the Internet offers.

At its most basic the criminal sets himself or herself up as an Internet car insurance broker. He or she then gives car insurance quotes that are way below the going rate; the so-called ‘ghost broker’ achieves this either by omitting any information that would otherwise bump up the cost, or by simply issuing a motor insurance certificate without ever taking out the corresponding insurance.

The third, and most sophisticated version of the scam, involves the ghost broker taking out a genuine car insurance policy using authentic, un-doctored information. The victim receives a genuine car insurance certificate but the scammer then cancels the insurance policy shortly thereafter, pocketing the refund himself.

In all cases the victim is left without valid car insurance despite having paid the premium in good faith.

How common is it?

Estimates vary but it is thought that up to 20,000 motorists in the United Kingdom could be driving around without having a valid car insurance policy.

Aside from leaving them at risk of losing their car’s value in the

event of an accident or theft, the scam also leaves them at risk of being charged by the police with the offence of driving without insurance. If found guilty they face an unlimited fine, 6-8 penalty points on their driving licence and having their car seized. In some cases, they could even face having a discretionary driving ban imposed.

The scam also leaves the victim vulnerable to civil action in the event of an accident. Without insurance cover in place to make good any financial loss incurred by another person they could find

themselves having to dig into their savings or even being forced to sell their home to pay the third party’s costs.

Who is most at risk?

The short answer is everyone. While younger drivers comprise the greatest percentage of those affected, ghost brokers are targeting everyone regardless of age and driving experience.

How can I avoid it?

You can avoid the scam by only using reputable car insurance providers that you have heard of.

If you haven’t heard of them you can search for them on the British Insurance Brokers’ Association(BIBA), the industry’s association.

BIBA can check whether a broker is a member or can put you in touch with one of its members that is local to you.

You should also check that anyone claiming to be an insurance advisor is on the Financial Services Register and that the company you are insured with is a member of the Association of British Insurers.

And you can check that your car is insured by checking the industry’s database at askMIDor by telephoning the insurance company direct to make sure that the policy is genuine and hasn’t been cancelled.

The easiest way to protect yourself though is to only use a reputable company that you have heard of - and accept that if a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is...

Mobile Phone Sanctions Need Tougher Reinforcement Police may be turning a blind eye as drivers defy a recently announced Government crackdown on using a phone while behind the wheel.

The total of fixed penalty notices issued by police forces in England and Wales plunged by 43% between 2014 and 2015, and there seems little likelihood that matters have improved this year.

Tougher penalties are due to take effect next year, thanks in part to pressure applied on the government by the RAC. There has been one tightening-up exercise already, in 2007, following the creation of the offence in 2003.

RAC research released in September showed that the number of motorists that think it is acceptable to make a quick call doubled from 7% in 2014, to 14% in 2016, while a fifth (20%) now believe it is safe to check social media on their phone while stopped in traffic.

And police forces seem unenthusiastic about devoting time and resources to pursuing those who flout the law, if new figures are any guide.

Within the 43% fall, there are wide variations from one force to another in terms of how they performed in 2015 compared with the previous year.

RAC road safety spokesman said: “Law-abiding motorists who regularly see others using a handheld phone at the wheel, putting lives at risk, want to know that the law is being enforced. With a 27% decline in full-time roads policing officers since 2010 and little chance of an increase in numbers in the near future, we need to see all police forces giving greater priority to the enforcement of this offence.

“And better enforcement needs to be backed up by more driver education about the true dangers of handheld mobile phone use, and a heavyweight road safety campaign akin to that which has been successful in making drink-driving socially unacceptable.”

A Nation Of ‘Micro-Criminals’ As many as 74 per cent of British people are sneaky ‘micro-criminals’, according to new research from YouGov. From shoppers taking plastic bags without paying for them to people lying about their age to get a better deal, Brits aren’t afraid to commit a minor crime if it means they can save themselves some cash.

More than four in ten (43 per cent) of people confessed to YouGov that they had paid someone cash-in-hand knowing that they won’t pay tax, making it the most common micro-crime.

The second most commonly committed crime is illegally streaming TV shows, movies or music to avoid paying for entertainment.

The research found men are more likely to be micro-criminals than women, 77 per cent vs 71 per cent respectively. And 78 per cent of middle class people are likely to have committed a micro-crime compared to 69 per cent of working class people.

The 11 most commonly committed micro-crimes are: Paid someone cash-in-hand so that it costs less, knowing they won’t pay tax: 43%

Illegally streamed TV shows, movies or music: 28% Illegally downloaded TV shows, movies or music: 25% Avoided paying for a fare on public transport: 24% Told someone your food order was to take away rather than eat-in because it costs less: 22% Lied about your own age/situation to get a cheaper deal on something: 19% Taken a plastic bag at a supermarket without paying for it: 17% Lied about your child’s age to get a cheaper deal on something: 16% Refilled your drink without paying extra: 16% Eaten loose fruit/pic n’ mix at a store without paying for it: 12% Put a product through a self-service till for less than it should actually cost: 9% The poll found that middle class people are more likely to have committed a micro-crime than working class people (78% vs 69%).

Your age and gender can also affect your temptation to commit a tiny crime.

Men, the poll found, are more likely to be microcriminals than women (77% versus 71%).

Meanwhile, just 68% of people aged 65 or older confessed to one of the mini offences, compared to 83% of 18-24s.

But, YouGov pointed out, it may just be that older people are less likely to admit to their crimes.

Who knows, perhaps we'll become better behaved with age. Or perhaps just better at lying.

Tomb Of Christ Opened For The First Time In Centuries Researchers have uncovered the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The tomb's surface had been covered by a thick layer of marble, according to an exclusive by National Geographic. This has now been removed to reveal the tomb for the first time since at least 1555 CE, and possibly much earlier.

“The marble covering of the tomb has been pulled back, and we were surprised by the amount of fill material beneath it," said Fredrik Hiebert, archaeologist-in-residence at the National Geographic Society working at the site. "It will be a long scientific analysis, but we will finally be able to see the original rock surface on which, according to tradition, the body of Christ was laid."

The shelf on which the body of Christ is said to have rested after his crucifixion is now protected by a structure called an Edicule.

Access to the tomb may also help researchers learn about what prompted Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, to identify the site as Christ's tomb.

The restoration of the tomb is due to be completed in the spring of 2017. The total costs of the project will run to more than $4 million (£3.3m). Donations to fund the restoration include a multimillion-dollar sum from King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Six Christian sects have custody over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the restorations required the consent of all of them before going ahead. They include the Greek Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Armenian Orthodox Church.

UN Votes To Initiate Negotiation Process Of Nuclear Weapons Ban A UN General Assembly committee has voted to launch negotiations on a new treaty banning nuclear weapons despite fierce opposition from the world’s nuclear powers.

A resolution presented by Austria, Ireland, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Brazil was adopted by a vote of 123 to 38, with 16 abstentions, following weeks of lobbying by the nuclear powers for ‘no’ votes.

The non-binding resolution provides for negotiations to begin in March next year on the new treaty, citing deep concern over the “catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons.”

Four of the five UN Security Council nuclear powers – Britain, France, Russia and the United States – voted against the resolution while China

abstained, as did India and Pakistan.

Japan, which has long campaigned against the use of nuclear weapons, voted against it, as did South Korea, which is facing a nuclear threat from North Korea.

Opponents argued that nuclear disarmament should be addressed within negotiations on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

This treaty won’t eliminate nuclear weapons overnight. But it will establish a powerful, new international legal standard, stigmatising nuclear weapons and compelling nations to take urgent action on disarmament.

The measure is expected to go to the full General Assembly for a vote in late November or early December.

MP Pushes Government To Tackle Hate Crime Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield has challenged the Government to tackle the rise in hate crimes since the EU referendum. Mr Blomfield pressed the Attorney General on how the Crown Prosecution Service is responding to hate crime.

The number of race and religious hate crimes rose by 41% in the month after the EU referendum. In his recent community consultation, the Big Conversation, Mr Blomfield also heard reports of victims not reporting incidents due to

fear of the consequences.

Speaking after Attorney General's Questions in the House of Commons, Mr Blomfield said: “The EU referendum has unleashed some disturbing behaviour that has no place in our society. Across the country we have seen some vicious assaults and increased abuse. A lot of people in Sheffield are worried about it and want to know that the Government is doing everything it can to stop it.”

Sheffield MP Takes Key Brexit Role Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield has taken a key post in Labour's newly created front bench team to hold the Government to account on the negotiations for Britain's departure from the European Union. He will be a Shadow Minister for Brexit in the team led by the new Shadow Secretary of State for Brexit, former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Keir Starmer MP. Mr Blomfield said: "I've just completed my annual community consultation, the Big Conversation, meeting more than 1,000 people in 40 events across the city. Brexit was one of the issues raised most often, with deep concerns about the risks to jobs, the NHS and our universities. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to challenge the Government every step of the way to ensure that we get the best possible deal for our city and our country. Last week's Conservative Party Conference showed that, without any agreement among themselves, the Government is stumbling to disaster and it will be ordinary people who pay the price. I'm pleased to be part of a strong team that will hold them to account. "

Greetings can be a ‘handful’ sometimes We’ve all been there. Walking into a room of people you don’t know, palms sweating and awkward eye contact in every direction. The inevitable handshake is coming, you just don’t know when.

Government Formally Drops Academies Legislation The government is dropping a bill to convert all schools to academies, announced in the Queen's speech.

The Education Bill was based on a white paper which initially suggested all schools in England would be compelled to become academies. But the element of compulsion was dropped after protests from councils and, instead, the bill encouraged schools to convert.

Education Secretary Justine Greening said no new legislation was required.

In a written Parliamentary statement Ms Greening said: "Our ambition remains that all schools should benefit from the freedom and autonomy that academy status brings. Our focus, however, is on building capacity in the system and encouraging schools to convert voluntarily.

"No changes to legislation are required for these purposes and therefore we do not require wider education legislation in this session to make progress on our ambitious education agenda."

The element of compulsion was dropped by the government after protests from many councils, including the mainly Conservative members of the County Council Network, who were opposed to forcing high-performing schools in their areas to convert.

Academies are independently run - but statefunded - schools, overseen by a not-for-profit business, known as an academy trust. They are often part of a chain.

The original plans would have required all schools to convert to academy status, or have plans to do so, by 2022. The statement clears the way for draft plans to be brought forward, including Theresa May's proposals for more grammar schools in England.

The Prime Minister announced plans last month to reverse Labour's 1998 ban on new grammar schools.

In many ways it was an inevitable step. By the time an education bill was announced in the Queen's speech on May 18th, its key component had already been dropped in an embarrassing Uturn.

The suggestion that all state schools overseen by councils should be forced to become academies had provoked ire on the Conservative back benches.

Many county councils felt they were doing a good job, and should be left alone. They argued that academisation was the solution for schools that were failing or chronically underperforming.

It was this stiff opposition from the shires and counties that made the U-turn unavoidable.

Since then the political landscape has changed beyond recognition. Theresa May has put her own stamp firmly on education policy with a green paper suggesting more schools should be able to select pupils on academic ability. The consultation ends in mid-December, and a white paper may follow in the spring.

UK Retains Seat At UN Human Rights Council The UK has today been successful in its bid for election to the UN Human Rights Council for the term January 2017 – December 2019. This follows an eleven month campaign, resulting in a high number of votes from countries around the world.

Following the announcement of the election results in New York, Human Rights Minister Baroness Anelay said: I am delighted that the UK has been re-elected to serve a further three year term on the Human Rights Council. The UK has been a strong advocate of the vital work of the Council since its inception, and we are honoured to continue to serve as a member.

The UK works tirelessly to protect vulnerable people from discrimination and to champion global causes including ending modern slavery and violence against women and girls, and promoting the universal right to freedom of religion or belief.

We will continue to use our voice to help strengthen the Council, to support countries working to improve their human rights record and to hold to account nations that commit serious and systematic violations against their citizens as we did recently leading a strong resolution at a Special Session at the Human Rights Council to address the deplorable situation in Aleppo.

The General Assembly voted Russia off the U.N. Human Rights Council, a stunning rebuke to the country which is increasingly being accused of war crimes over its actions in Syria.

The 193-member General Assembly elected 14 members to 47-nation council, the U.N.’s main body charged with promoting and protecting human rights.

Russia, which received 112 votes, lost its regional seat to Hungary, with 144 votes, and Croatia with 112 votes.

Russia’s mission to the U.N. did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China, Brazil, Rwanda, Hungary, Cuba, South Africa, Japan, Tunisia, the U.S. and U.K. all won seats on the council. Guatemala was the only country running for a seat beside Russia to not be elected.

Human rights groups had called for countries to reject the candidacies of Russia and Saudi Arabia, which has been accused of indiscriminate attacks against civilians in Yemen. Saudi Arabia’s election, however, was a foregone conclusion since it was running unopposed for its regional seat.

“In rejecting Russia’s bid for re-election to the Human Rights Council, U.N. member states have sent a strong message to the Kremlin about its support for a regime that has perpetrated so much atrocity in Syria,” said Louis Charbonneau, U.N. director at Human Rights Watch. “Next year, U.N. member states should make sure that all regional groups have real competition so no one is guaranteed victory.”

Tenth Of Adults At Risk Of Diabetes By 2035 Health experts are warning that one in 10 adults in the UK will be at risk of developing diabetes by 2035.

For the first time, Public Health England forecasts the number of people with the disease could top five million if obesity rates continue to increase.

About 90% of patients have type 2 diabetes, which is linked to being overweight.

A separate analysis says the cost of treating the UK's "diabetes epidemic" could soar to 17% of the NHS budget. Experts are warning the burden of treating diabetes, especially new cases of type 2, could bankrupt the NHS. Statisticians at Public Health England have published a new forecast for the number of people who will develop diabetes in the coming years.

Their analysis includes type one, which is an auto-immune disease and accounts for about 10% of cases in the UK. But the remaining 90% have type 2, which can be affected by where you come from and your family history, but in most cases is associated with being overweight.

In 2015, there were around 3.8 million people living with diabetes in England alone.

If obesity rates remain stable, Public Health England predicts that by 2035 that figure could have leapt to 4.9 million.

But if obesity rates increase by 3% every five years, an extra 263,000 people will have developed diabetes by 2035, putting the overall figure at more than five million.

Militants Kill 60 In Police Cadet College Attack Officials blamed a Pakistani Taliban faction for the attack, but ISIS has claimed responsibility.

Militants killed at least 60 people at a police training college near the western Pakistani city of Quetta overnight on 24th October.

Three armed attackers wearing suicide vests entered the college, which houses 700 trainee police officers, and began shooting cadets in their sleeping quarters.

Officials have blamed a faction of the Pakistani Taliban for the attack, but the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) also claimed responsibility via its Amaq news agency.

Troops were deployed and the attackers exchanged gunfire with them for several hours.

The fighting ended after one of the militants was killed by security forces and the other two detonated their bomb vests.

The police college is in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province. The provincial government spokesman Anwarullah Kakar

reported, in addition to the 60 dead, 118 people had been injured in the attack.

The chief of the paramilitary force that led the counter-operation, Major General Sher Afgan, said that intercepted communications showed the militants belonged to a faction of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group, which is affiliated to the Pakistani Taliban.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has not claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afgan added that the militants had been in communication with operatives in Afghanistan. Quetta lies close to the Afghan border, and it is one of the most sensitive areas in Pakistan, with Balochistan nationalists demanding greater autonomy and Islamist militants launching regular attacks.

At least 70 people were killed in a suicide bombing at a hospital in Quetta city in August. Both ISIS and a faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

School Pupil Exclusions On The Rise tackle "poor behaviour".

Not only has the number of fixed term exclusions increased, but the average number of days children are excluded for has increased steadily over three years - from 4.18 days in 2012-13, to 4.23 in 2013-14 and 4.38 in 2014-15.

There might be a correlation between particularly high levels of exclusions and wider economic uncertainty in some areas. Families in financial difficulty, or with difficult personal circumstances are examples of this, so that could explain the regional variations in the statistics. Shahid Afridi Set To Release Autobiography In 2017 Pakistan cricket all-rounder Boom Boom Shahid Afridi is set to release his memoir in 2017.

The book titled Shahid Afridi: An Autobiography is being penned with the help of famous Journalist and TV anchor Wajahat Saeed Khan.

The autobiography will give an interesting account of cricket’s most exciting player, who as a 16-year-old blasted a record-breaking hundred against Sri Lanka in 1996.

The government’s efforts to bring economic stability and start mega development projects has made the opposition realise they face defeat in 2018,” he said.

The prime minister said that Pakistan was destined to become a developed state. “The fact that their political careers will end by 2018 worries them. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

should be changed for the better. We will bring that change,” he said.

“They have not done anything in KP over the past three years. The PML-N government will come to power in KP as well in 2018,” the prime minister said.

The PM said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would once again emerge victorious in the upcoming general elections.

The PM said that the KP government had deceived the masses by raising the slogan of change. “This never happened and the provincial government did not focus on the uplift of the province,” he said.

“The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will bring prosperity and progress to Pakistan,” Nawaz said, adding that load-shedding would end by 2018.

The PM announced a development package, including gas provision, a new road, hospital, railway service and a university campus for Kohat.

The gas project will cost Rs 3.9 billion and will benefit people of Kohat, Khushal Garh, Shairkot, Alizai, Nusrat Pur, Dhoda and Chorluki.

He said that a highway would link Kohat, Jand and Pindi Gaib. “The road will be linked to the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway,” he said. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said orders for the construction of the road had already been issued to the National Highways Authority.

The PM announced to establish a state-of-the-art hospital and a campus of the Kohat University for women in the city. The prime minister said a rail service would also be started from Rawalpindi to Kohat.

He announced a grant of Rs200 million for district and Rs100 million for tehsil councils.

Pakistans 400th test match went down in history as a historic match, being played in Dubai with a pink ball under flood lights.

200th Test — vs England, Old Trafford, 1992: Pakistan had won the World Cup earlier that year. Imran Khan had retired and Javed Miandad took charge yet again.

England won the fourth Test at Leeds while Pakistan completed a win at The Oval to take the series 2-1.

300th Test — vs India, Multan 2004: This was memorable but not for Pakistani fans. The Test will be remembered for Virender Sehwag’s 309. He became the first Indian to register a triple hundred. The game had its share of controversy when India’s stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid declared the innings with Sachin Tendulkar stranded at 194. Tendulkar went on to express his displeasure in the press conference but all was well in the Indian camp after they registered a memorable victory.

Pakistani bowlers were made to practice on the same pitch after the Test. Their champion spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was meted out harsh treatment by Sehwag. He went onto concede 204 runs from his 43 overs and never played for Pakistan again.

Nobody can deny the necessity of a good education and its benefits. Before Partition, only a small percentage of Muslims were educated while the majority of Hindus were well educated. Immediately after Partition, Quaid-e-Azam emphasised the need of education in these words: “Education does not merely mean academic education. You have to build the character of our future generations, which means highest sense of honour, integrity and selfless service to the nation and a sense of responsibility.” He also said: “There is an immediate and urgent need for training our people in scientific and technical education in order to build up our future economic life …. do not forget that we have to compete with the world which is moving very fast in this direction.”

Our Holy Prophet (pbuh), advised Muslims in these words: “Seek knowledge even if you have to go all the way to China.” Gen Hakim Arshad Qureshi, former commander of the SSG pointed out: “A nation that does not honour its intelligentsia is not likely to find new ones in future.

This is a lesson from history; it is surely doomed forever.”

The famous British/American educationist and philosopher, Prof Alfred North Whitehead, emphasised the importance of education, science and technology in these words: “In the conditions of modern life, the rule is absolute: the race which does not value trained intelligence is doomed. Not all your heroism, not all your social charm, not all your wit, not all your victories on land or at sea, can move back the finger of fate.

Today we maintain ourselves, tomorrow science will have moved over yet one more step and there will be no appeal from the judgement which will be pronounced on the uneducated.”

The famous scientist and Nobel Laureate, Prof Albert Einstein, expressed the importance of education in these words: “No amount of experience will turn a person of mediocre talent into a genius.” “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, more violent. It takes the touch of a genius and a lot of courage to move into the opposite direction.”

And the famous British scientist/educationist, Thomas Huxley, said: “Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not. It is the first lesson that ought to be learnt and however early a man’s training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly.”

Another Western philosopher, Peter Brougham, points out the importance of education in these words: “Education makes a people easy to lead, difficult to drive, easy to govern but impossible to enslave.” John Locke beautifully explains the process of learning in these words: “Learning (education) is a process that never ends.”

‘Bionic’ Plants Can Detect Explosives Scientists have transformed the humble spinach plant into a bomb detector.

By embedding tiny tubes in the plants' leaves, they can be made to pick up chemicals called nitro-aromatics, which are found in landmines and buried munitions.

Real-time information can then be wirelessly relayed to a handheld device.

The MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) work is published in the journal Nature Materials.

The scientists implanted nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (tiny cylinders of carbon) into the leaves of the spinach plant. It takes about 10 minutes for the spinach to take up the water into the leaves.

To read the signal, the researchers shine a laser onto the leaf, prompting the embedded nanotubes to emit near-infrared fluorescent light.

This can be detected with a small infrared camera connected to a small, cheap Raspberry Pi computer. The signal can also be detected with a smartphone by removing the infrared filter most have.

The plants could be use for defence applications, but also to monitor public spaces for terrorism related activities, since we show both water and airborne detection.

Such plants could be used to monitor groundwater seepage from buried munitions or waste that contains nitro-aromatics. The researchers can pick up a signal from about 1m away from the plant, and they are now working on increasing that distance.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has filed a Rs 26 billion defamation suit against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

According to reports, the notices were sent to Khan's residence in Lahore's Zaman Park and Islamabad's Bani Gala. Earlier, PTI chief Imran Khan had alleged that Javed Sadiq - a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin and executive director of China State Construction Engineering Corporation - had been acting as a frontman for Shahbaz and had made billions of rupees in commissions.

"He has raked in 15 billion rupees, and has an additional 26 billion rupees by now," Imran claimed.

"He is Shahbaz's frontman," the PTI chief said.

The notices state that if Khan does not revoke his accusations, the defamation suit against him will be pursued in full force.

Saudi Arabia To Increase Visa Fees Fees come as the kingdom tries to plug the gap in its finances caused by the slump in the oil price Saudi Arabia will increase charges for visas for people to visit the country in order to complete Islamic pilgrimages.

The ruling Council of Ministers, chaired by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, announced that anyone applying for a visit to complete the Hajj for a second time will be charged SR2000 (£410) for each visit.

The same fee with apply for people wishing to complete the Umrah, but one that can be completed at any point in the year, for a second time.

A visa for the first visit for Hajj will remain free.

Prices for general visits will increase to SR200 (£41) for a two-month visa and SR300 (£61) for three.

Saudi Arabia imposes strict quotas on the number of Muslims who are granted special Hajj visas every year in order to prevent too many people visiting Mecca, and the other holy city Medina, at the same time.

Last year, the Saudi Government was criticised

after more than 2,400 people were crushed during a stampede near the holy site of Mina during the Hajj.

The new fees come as Saudi Arabia struggles to fill the holes in its balance sheet as its oil revenue continues to decline.

During a meeting of Opec nations in Algiers in october, the kingdom and the 11 other members agreed to cut oil production for the first time after their bid to out-compete cheaper US shale gas failed.

Opec has also been hit by the lifting of economic sanctions against Iranian oil.

Oil prices reached a peak of $100 (£77) a barrel in the middle of 2014 but fell as low as $26 (£20) a barrel in February this year.

The country is now frantically reforming its generous welfare system with deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman telling Bloomberg in June that his reform programme will aim to raise an extra $100bn (£77bn) in non-oil revenues by 2020.

Grandparents’ Health Being Put At Risk From Babysitting The perils of grandparents babysitting have been revealed in a survey, which found nearly half of them caught a cold from a sick grandchild.

There are now 10 million grandmothers and grandfathers providing regular childcare for their families each week, more than ever before, but this is leading to a potential health crisis - with their immune systems vulnerable to colds.

And with colds leading to more serious illnesses, like chest infections or pneumonia, a fifth of grandparents say it is their biggest concern when it comes to babysitting (21 per cent).

In an attempt to escape falling ill themselves, 16 per cent admit they avoid their grandchildren when they are sick.

With 48 per cent saying they have caught a cold from a sick grandchild and a further four in ten

ending up with a chest infection or pneumonia (41 per cent), these concerns are not unfounded.

The study of 1,000 grandparents with grandchildren under the age of 10, also found this has caused tensions with families.

One in eight wish they had given their grandchildren a wide berth at least once to protect themselves from getting sick (13 per cent).

Meanwhile, a fifth say they are annoyed if they are not warned their grandchildren are ill before visiting them (19 per cent) and 21 per cent confess they are reluctant to babysit when they are sick.

Their concerns can backfire, however.

Being over-cautious means 52 per cent believe they have missed out on valuable grandparent time by worrying about catching a cold.

Quetta Killings A Precursor?

Sunday night terrorist attack killed 61 cadets in the Police Training Academy with over 115 injured. The four suicide bombers had held 250 cadets hostage for several hours. Obviously it seems that there must have been some collaboration somewhere to let three in.

Provincial condemnation would be later orchestrated by the Prime Minister, Army Chief, Corps Commander, Interior Minister, Chief Minister, IG Frontier Corps and other functionaries.

Here’s The Difference Between Ice Cream And Gelato There are three important differences between the two frozen treats Aside from the fact that gelato comes from Italy, it's easy to think that it's pretty much the same thing as ice cream. But it's not.

There are three important differences between the two frozen treats.

Ice cream is more fattening. Law requires that ice cream must have at least 10 percent milkfat. Yes, ice cream is a federally defined term. Gelato, on the other hand, does not have to meet this requirement, and is therefore made with whole milk and no cream. Gelato generally has around 3.8 percent milkfat. Thanks to this, gelato is the healthier, less fattening choice compared to ice cream. Ice cream has more air whipped into it.

The same law that states ice cream must have 10 percent milkfat, also states that ice cream can be at most 50 percent air. Ice cream increases in volume when it's churned in the air, but the aforementioned law puts a limit on how much it can be increased. Gelato is more dense than ice cream, mainly because it's churned more slowly, meaning less air is churned into it.

Ice cream is served at a colder temperature. Before ice cream is served, it's hardened in a blast freezer. Gelato does not go through this process, and is therefore served at a less frozen, and slightly warmer temperature than ice cream. That's why gelato has a silkier texture that's more comparable to soft serve than to regular ice cream.

In this 2016 election, at one stage there were 10 governors or former governors and 10 who are or were senators, although many have since dropped out.

One person is nominated to represent the Republican and Democratic parties in the presidential election.

Why is it Hillary Clinton v Donald Trump?

A series of elections are held in every state and overseas territory, starting in February, which determine who becomes each party's official presidential candidate.

The winner of each collects a number of "delegates" - party members with the power to vote for that candidate at the party conventions held in July, where candidates are formally confirmed.

The more state contests a candidate wins, the more delegates will be pledged to support them at the convention.

Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump were the clear winners in 2016 and were officially nominated at their party's conventions in July.

They are two of the most unpopular candidates in modern American history.

At the conventions, the parties also officially unveiled their vicepresident picks - Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia for Mrs Clinton, and Indiana Governor Mike Pence for the Republicans.

The big talking points of the campaign There has been a slew of controversies generated by Donald Trump, from the moment the New York businessman launched his campaign with the description of Mexican immigrants as "rapists and criminals". His candidacy has rarely gone a few weeks without sparking some uproar. He's waged wars of words with a judge, a Miss Universe, a Fox News anchor and the Muslim family of a fallen soldier. He's had to defend his refusal not to release his tax returns and the suggestion he has paid no federal income tax for 18 years, plus field questions surrounding his charitable foundation.

And Hillary Clinton has had her share of anxious moments too. The damage wrought by her private email arrangement to her reputation is thought to be significant, despite the FBI effectively closing the investigation in July and clearing Clinton of wrongdoing. Questions have been raised about the foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation. Mr Trump has also put the spotlight on the part she played in pushing back at the women who claimed to have affairs with her husband Bill. And WikiLeaks has been revealing hacked emails that have laid bare some embarrassing conversations between members of her campaign team.

Who won the debates?

ONE: New Yorker Trump landed some blows on Clinton on trade deals, her emails and the Middle East, framing her as a political insider who had achieved nothing after three decades of public life. But after a shaky start, she controlled the evening and he failed to stay disciplined about his message.

TWO: Described as one of the nastiest presidential debates, repeated attempts at character assassination dominated. Mrs Clinton homed in on the 2005 video of Mr Trump's lewd comments about women. It showed, she said, "exactly who he is".

Mr Trump held a bizarre news conference featuring Bill Clinton's sexual accuser and on the stage he focused on these allegations.

The scandal over Mrs Clinton's use of a private email account for official business when she was secretary of state should land her in jail, the Republican candidate said. No knock-out blow from Clinton, says our North America reporter Anthony Zurcher, and it was probably a draw.

THREE: The most remarkable moment came when moderator Chris Wallace asked Mr Trump whether he would support the election results, no matter who won. Mr Trump refused to do so, going against a longstanding American tradition that the winner is recognised and congratulated by their rival. Instead, Mr Trump accused the media of poisoning people's minds and said Mrs Clinton should not have been allowed to run for president. At that point, the headlines were written and the debate results were locked in, said Zurcher. It was not a good night for the Republican.

VP DEBATE: The Republican vice-presidential nominee's primary job - really his only job - was to stop the bleeding and give the campaign an opportunity to regroup after Mr Trump's poorly received first debate. Mr Kaine's goal was to keep him from doing that. Mr Pence succeeded. Mr Kaine, while unloading a crate of opposition research on Mr Trump, failed, says Zurcher.

How does the vote in November work?

The candidate with the most votes in each state becomes the candidate which that state supports for president.

It's all down to a system called the electoral college, a group of people who choose the winner - 538 of them, in fact. Just half of them - 270 - are needed to make a president.

But not all states are equal - California, for example, has more than 10 times the population of Connecticut, so they don't get an equal say.

Each state has certain number of these "electors" based on their population in the most recent census (it so happens that it's the same number of districts in a state, plus two senators).

When citizens vote for their preferred candidate, they're actually voting for the electors, some of which are pledged to one candidate, some for another.

But here's where it gets interesting. In almost every state (except Nebraska and Maine), the winner takes all - so the person who wins the most electors in New York, for example, will get all 29 of New York's electoral votes.
