AISCL Season 2017 Abbeydale Crowned Champions
Abbeydale previously known as Narmando joined the league in 2007 when get league was formed. In 2014 there was a breakaway and the club changed captain and team name. Abbeydale Cricket Club was formed and Sarkab Raja took over from Afraz Khan who's services were retained by the new skipper for guidance and experience. Youngsters like Amar Khan, Bilal Khan, Jabbar Khan, adrees Khan joined the club. Over the years Adeeb Khan, Akash Munir and Safraz Khan came long. Abbeydale hovered around 2nd for a couple of years however could not cross the line. Season 2017 was different. They no longer relied upon individuals, each player came to the fort. A team ethos was brewing, players believed in each other and in second part of season they only lost the once to Earl marshal. Abbeydale clinched the title 8 points clear of second and a game to go. So congratulations Abbeydale Cricket Club, well played and thoroughly deserved. I'm told there is a barbeque on their final game, and a media gathering to capture their presentation ceremony. On behalf of Allama Iqbal Executive Committee well done. Back row left: Adrees Khan, Jabbar Khan, Sarkab Raja (c) Adeeb Khan, Farhan Khan, Shadab Khan, Afraz Khan, Tattoo Khan Front row left: Aleem Khan, amar Riaz and Bilal Khan Two young supporters also in picture

Council Meetings Set To Become More Accessible A pilot scheme is set to be launched in Sheffield which aims to make Council meetings more accessible. Sheffield City Council is starting with changes to its monthly full Council meeting, held on the first Wednesday of the month, which is where major issues affecting the city are debated and the budget is set. From September, the meeting times will be changed and made shorter so that more people are able to attend. On Wednesday, 6 September, full Council will start at 5pm and finish at 8pm. The first hour will still be available for petitions and questions from members of the public as currently. The meetings will run to the new times until April 2018. This is a change to the previous start time of 2pm, with meetings regularly lasting for more than 4.5 hours. Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council and chair of the cross-party working group responsible for the scheme, said: “We want people to have the opportunity to access the democratic process, so we’re making changes so more
people can get involved. “We established a cross-party working group to look at how we can do things differently Not everyone is able to attend meetings in the working day or stay for the whole debate and we want to find a way to make the meetings more accessible and engaging to the public. The trial changes to the Full Council meetings are the start of this and we want the public’s feedback on them.” The cross-party working group (made up of councillors from all political parties) will be reviewing how full Council meetings are working to make sure the changes are effective. It will also be looking at other aspects of decision making and public engagement, which includes: Creating a route map to help people understand the different ways to ask questions and raise issues with the Council Reviewing the process for petitions and exploring different ways that the public might ask questions of decision makers Options for webcasting and audio recording

Britain Facing Social Care Crisis
Taxi Law Reform Needed To Fight Child Sexual Exploitation
Britain is facing a social care crisis with many people unaware and unprepared for the potential care costs that come with older age. UK adults underestimated the average weekly cost for elderly residential care by over £300 when asked by think tank the Centre for the Modern Family. While the true cost of care is around £866 a week, when surveyed people substantially undervalued the fees, saying they thought it would be around £549 a week. One in four of those surveyed admitted they had no idea how they would cover these costs for themselves or a relative. With only 15% of people saving money on a monthly basis to pay for their own care when the time comes, and almost half (49%) said they avoided thinking about the issue because it makes them feel stressed. The number of people in care in the UK will almost double by 2035. Research shows that an over-reliance on relatives and the state could put families in serious financial difficulty. Many people simply don’t understand the social care benefits and support system. Providing clarity and raising awareness of what is and isn’t available is critical to helping people prepare for the longerterm future. Currently you have to pay for care if you’re in a residential home in England and have assets of more than £23,250.
Local councils say current laws applying to taxi firms are “not fit for purpose” and need urgently updating to strengthen the fight against crimes like child sexual exploitation. The Local Government Association (LGA) says passenger safety levels need improving for today’s private app-led cab hiring market, and laws dating back 170 years need modernising. Licensing has emerged as a chief concern, with many councils frustrated at their inability to take action against drivers working in their area, but licensed elsewhere. The LGA represents over 370 councils across England and Wales. It claims outdated legislation needs strengthening in the wake of the rise of app-based firms and cross-border hiring. Loophole-based discrepancies mean some locally-based drivers must comply with more rigorous standards than other drivers operating on exactly the same roads. The LGA is calling on a working group set up by the Government last year to entertain the introduction of national minimum licensing standards for taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers. It also wants the creation of a national database all such drivers. Last month taxi app firm Uber was accused by police of allowing a driver who sexually assaulted a passenger to strike again by not reporting the attack, along with other serious crimes. Uber said it was “surprised” by the allegations, adding: “In no way does it reflect the good working relationship we have with the police.”

Study Reveals Home Broadband Overspend A new study has revealed that people in the UK overspend by 1.7 billion pounds a year on home broadband due to out-of-contract price hikes. Seventy per cent of people in Sheffield are estimated to be out of contract with their providers and potentially facing avoidable price increases.

Learner Drivers To Be Allowed On Motorways From 2018 The Department for Transport says a new law which will allow learner drivers to have lessons on motorways has “wide support”. From 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales will be able to practice on Britain’s fastest roads if they are in a dual control car alongside an approved driving instructor. “Allowing learners to drive on motorways in a supportive environment will help them develop a practical understanding of how to use motorways safely before driving independently,” said Transport Secretary Chris Grayling. Currently, advanced driving lessons are available for motorway driving but they are often unaffordable. Mr Grayling said, “younger drivers are up to seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured compared with drivers over 25 and lack of experience is an important factor.”
Government Plans to Keep Visa-Free Travel For EU Nationals European Union nationals will remain able to pass freely into the UK without passports, under new Government plans. Those who wish to stay for work, study or to settle will still have to apply for permission. It comes after the second paper on Brexit negotiations was published regarding the issue of the Irish border, which includes keeping the Common Travel Area between the two countries. After the Government’s insistence that “no return to the hard borders of the past” would be made, citizens of the EU will be able to travel freely between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Island and into the UK. The Irish Border is one of three high priority issues in “phase one” of the Brexit negotiations, along with the financial settlement and citizens’ rights. The Home Office is claiming that the new plans are effective, stating that managing migration is as much about access to work and citizenship as well as the controlling of entry at a physical border. There are critics to the proposals though. Nigel Farage, former head of UKIP who resigned following the referendum, feels the Government is “bowing to EU demands” and added, “The operation of the land border between the north and south should be none of their business. “That the Government would willingly allow EU national to freely move into UK territory is of concern”. Prime Minister Theresa May reiterated her intentions, “I want people to be absolutely clear: the UK does not want to see border posts for any purpose.”

Immigration Levels In UK Declines A new report on the level of immigration in UK reveals that there has been a considerable decline in the incoming number of people. Ninety-seven per cent of international students leave the UK after finishing their studies, suggesting that levels of immigration in the Britain are much lower than previously thought, new figures revealed. It has been claimed that tens of thousands of international students remain in the country illegally after completing their studies but exit checks introduced last year found evidence to the contrary. The figures come as the Home Office unveils separate plans to ask migration experts to examine the impact of international students on the UK job market. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) will be asked to examine the effect that both European Union (EU) and non-EU students have on the labour market and economy while in the UK and will report back next September. Announcing the figures, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the government wanted to keep the door open to genuine students but would crack down on abuse of visas by poor-quality institutions. Rudd said the UK’s status as the second most popular global destination for international students was “something to be proud of” and said the sector was a key export for the UK. “That’s why we want to have a robust and independent evidence base of their value and the impact they have,” the Guardian quoted Rudd as saying. The committee will be asked to examine the impact of tuition fees and other spending by international students on the local and national economy, as well as the role students play in contributing to economic growth and the quality of education for domestic students.
Pakistan’s Independence Day Celebrated In Barkers Pool The 70th anniversary of the creation of the state of Pakistan was celebrated in Sheffield with an Independence Day party in Barker’s Pool. The anniversary recalls the partition of India following the end of the British Raj and the declaration of Pakistan as an independent state.
Rail Fares Face Biggest Rise For Five Years Millions of rail users in the UK will see the price of regulated rail fares rise by up to 3.6% in January. The permitted increase - which is taken from the Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation measure for July - will be the highest since January 2013. Passenger groups said commuters would be worst-hit, and suggested that the RPI measure should be scrapped. The fare rises will affect "anytime" and some offpeak fares as well as season tickets in England and Wales. Unregulated fares, which include super off-peak travel and advance tickets, will be set in December. Transport Focus, which represents the interests of passengers, said rail users were already fed up with getting poor value for money. It said: "Yet again, passengers, now majority funders of the railway, face fare rises next January. Commuters do not give value for money on their railways a high satisfaction score - just one third according to our latest survey. The government said fare increases were justified
by improvements to the network. "We are investing in the biggest rail modernisation programme for over a century to improve services for passengers providing faster and better trains with more seats," a spokesperson for the Department for Transport said. "We have always fairly balanced the cost of this investment between the taxpayer and the passenger." Since 2007 it has been explicit government policy for passengers to pay more of the overall cost of running the country's rail system, and for taxpayers as a whole to pay less via subsidies. The coalition government continued the policy of shifting the financial burden to the wallets of passengers, though with less aggressive price increases than before. A research paper, published earlier this year by the House of Commons Library, cited earlier figures from the rail regulator in March 2016 showing that "passengers have contributed an increasing proportion of the rail industry's income relative to tax-
Changes To Driving Test In December 2017 Learner drivers taking their test from December 2017 onwards will face a revamped practical test, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced. Here are five key changes you'll want to know. 1. You'll probably have to use a satnav While one in five candidates will still be asked to follow road signs during the independent driving section of the test, most will now be asked to follow instructions from the examiner's satnav. 2. You'll be driving independently for 20 minutes The time spent driving independently will double from the

current 10 minutes, giving examiners the chance to get a better feel for the learner's overall ability. 3. You'll drive on busier roads The increased independent driving portion of the test also means there's time to update test routes to include busier, faster, higher-risk roads where new drivers statistically have the most crashes. 4. You'll be asked how the car works while on the move Make sure you know how to activate common features of your car, like the windscreen washer or heated rear windscreen, as you will now be asked to demonstrate one while on the move. 5. You won't have to reverse around a corner Generations of drivers perfected the art of reversing around a corner to pass their test and then never used the manouevre again. In recognition of this it's been ditched in favour of more emphasis on practical manouevres such as parking. DVSA chief executive Gareth Llewellyn said: “Making sure the driving test better assesses a driver’s ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help you stay safe on Britain’s roads.” “It’s vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they’ve passed their test.”
payers over the past four years - up from 55.6% in 2010-11 to 65% in 2014-15." Regulated fares were meant to be the government's way of stopping private rail firms from overcharging passengers. They apply to tickets where people don't have much choice but to go by train: commuting into big cities, for example. But for many years, ministers have deliberately used the system to put prices up anyway. Why? Because they want passengers to pay a bigger chunk of the rail bill, so that the government pays less. Fares used to account for about half the cost of running our trains. Today it's about 70%. It does mean, of course, that people who don't commute by train, which is most of the country, pay less to subsidise the system. But that's little consolation to workers who've faced consistent price rises that have often outpaced their salary. Even allowing for inflation, rail fares have gone up by about 25% since the mid-1990s.
Self-Driving Lorries To Be Tested On Motorways In England Platoons of self-driving lorries will be trialled on England’s motorways, the Department for Transport has announced. Up to three wirelessly connected HGVs will travel in convoy, with acceleration and braking controlled by the lead vehicle. Lorries driving close together could see the front vehicle pushing air out of the way, making the other vehicles more efficient and lowering their emissions. Similar trials have already been carried out elsewhere in Europe and in the US but motoring experts questioned the suitability of self-driving lorries in the UK. The Government has provided £8.1 million funding towards the trials, which are expected to take place by the end of next year. All lorries involved will have a driver ready to take control if required. Transport minister Paul Maynard said: “We are investing in technology that will improve people’s lives. Advances such as lorry platooning could benefit
businesses through cheaper fuel bills and other road users thanks to lower emissions and less congestion. But first we must make sure the technology is safe and works well on our roads, and that’s why we are investing in these trials.” The trial is also funded by Highways England and will be carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory. Initial test track research will help to ascertain the appropriate distance between vehicles and on which roads the tests should take place. On the downside, three lorries can obscure road signs from drivers in outside lanes and could block access to slip roads. We have some of the busiest motorways in Europe with many more exits and entries. Streams of close-running HGVs could provide financial savings on longdistance journeys, but on our heavily congested motorways – with stop-start traffic and vehicles jostling for position – the benefits are less certain.

Buying A House - What Price Peace Of Mind A Guide To Residential Surveys And Valuations
Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant: Mark Jenkinson & Son This month I am going to concentrate on the technical side of surveying, and in particular, residential surveys and valuations. Most readers will resonate with this, as most of you will have either bought or sold a house. In many people’s minds there are a lot of misconceptions about the reasons for a residential survey and valuation, with many buyers either not understanding or not bothering with a survey. The misconceptions are:

There are times when you hear of horror stories where people have bought properties and have been burdened with substantial bills for problems they did not expect. Ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif left Pakistan for London to see his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz amid rumours that he may not return to the country due to the current political situation and ongoing corruption and money laundering cases against him. Sharif departed via an Emirates flight, which will have a transit stay of a few hours in Dubai before leaving for London. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif saw the former Premier off at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, Dawn newspaper reported. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, a close aide of Nawaz Sharif, dismissed rumours that he might not return to the country soon, considering the current political situation and the cases he is involved in with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). “Why would Sharif choose to stay away from the country where he is loved the most by the people? The circumstances today are not the way they were in 2007, when dictator Musharraf was ruling here. Even at that time, Sharif had wanted to re-

turn to the country but he was not allowed,” said Rashid, adding that the former Premier would stay in London for at least 10 days. “However, he may extend his stay for more days depending on Begum Kulsoom’s reports,” Rashid said. The opposing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson said that they do not believe that Sharif is likely to return to Pakistan to face the NAB cases. “There are chances that Sharif may not return to the country to face NAB corruption references in which he cannot evade punishment,” Fawad Chaudhry told the newspaper. Sharif should not have been allowed to leave the country without joining the NAB investigation, Chaudhry said. Sharif’s sons — Hussain and Hassan — and daughter Asma are already in London. However, Maryam Nawaz, who is busy running the campaign for her mother in the Lahore NA-120 by-polls scheduled for September 17, has cancelled plans to visit her. The Sharif family said it would join the NAB investigations after a decision on their review petitions against the Supreme Court’s July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case. NAB had earlier announced that it would file four references against the Sharif family and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar soon after Eid-ul Azha.

Clearly this is not an exhaustive list and there are other types of valuations. The question you need to ask is, is it worth spending anything between £50,000 to £1,000,000 and not getting a survey for a fee of between £500 - £2,500. Most people would agree that this is a no-brainer but the reality is that many people do not have a survey carried out which can lead to major problems in the future. Good advice would be to have a survey carried out. This is only a short guide. For further advice please contact a chartered surveyor.

International Literacy Day September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world. Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. According to UNESCO’s “Global Monitoring Report on Education for All (2006)”, South and West Asia has the lowest regional adult literacy rate (58.6%), followed by sub-Saharan Africa (59.7%), and the Arab States (62.7%). Countries with the lowest literacy rates in the world are Burkina Faso(12.8%), Niger(14.4%) and Mali (19%). The report shows a clear connection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty, and between illiteracy and prejudice against women. Celebrations of International Literacy Day have included specific themes, in line with Education For
All goals and other United Nations programs such as the United Nations Literacy Decade. The celebration’s theme for 2007 and 2008 was “Literacy and Health”, with prizes awarded to organizations at the forefront of health education. This was also the thematic emphasis of the 2007-2008 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade. In particular, International Literacy Day 2008 had a strong emphasis on Literacy and Epidemics with a focus on communicable diseases such as HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria, some of the world’s forefront public health concerns. For 2009-2010 the emphasis was placed on “Literacy and Empowerment”, with special consideration to Gender Equality and the empowerment of women. The theme of the 2011-2012 celebrations is “Literacy and Peace”.

Sheffield’s 16,657 Mortgage Time-Bombs According to my research, of the 214,881 properties in Sheffield, 77,116 of those properties have mortgages on them. 85.2% of those mortgaged properties are made up of owner-occupiers and the rest are buy to let landlords (with a mortgage). 16,657 of those Sheffield mortgages are interest only. Research also shows that, each year between 2017 and 2022, 200 of those households with interest only mortgages will mature, and of those, 50 households a year will either have a shortfall or no way of paying the mortgage off. Now that might not sound a lot – but it is still someone’s home that is potentially at risk. Theoretically this is an enormous problem for anyone in this situation as their home is at risk of repossession if they don’t have some means to repay these mortgages at the end of the term (the typical term being 25 to 35 years). Banks and Building Societies are under no obligation to lengthen the term of the mortgage and, when deciding whether they are prepared to do so or not, will look at it in the same way as someone coming to them for a new mortgage. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, when endowment mortgages were all the rage, having an endowment meant you were taking out an interest only mortgage and then paying into an endowment policy which would pay the mortgage off (plus hopefully leave some profit) at the end of the 25/35-year term. There were advantages to that type of mortgage as the monthly repayments were lower than with a traditional capital repayment and interest mortgage. Only the interest, rather than any capital, is paid to the mortgage company – but the full debt must be cleared at the end of the 25/35-year term. Historically plenty of Sheffield homeowners bought an endowment policy to run alongside their interest only mortgage. However, because the endowment policy was a stock market linked investment plan and
www.ilmnews.com
the stock market poorly performed between 1999 and 2003 (when the FTSE dropped 49.72%), the endowments of many of these homeowners didn’t cover the shortfall. Indeed, it left them significantly in debt! Nonetheless, in the mid 2000’s, when the word endowment had become a dirty word, the banks still sold ‘interest only’ mortgages, but this time with no savings plan, endowment or investment product to pay the mortgage off at the end of the term. It was a case of ‘we’ll sort that nearer the time’ as property prices were on the rampage in an upwards direction! Thankfully, the proportion of interest only mortgages sold started to decline after the Credit Crunch, from a peak of 43.81% of all mortgages to the current 8.71%. Increasing the length of the mortgage to obtain more time to raise the money has gradually become more difficult since the introduction of stricter lending criteria in 2014, with many mature borrowers considered too old for a mortgage extension. Sheffield people who took out interest only mortgages years ago and don’t have a strategy to pay back the mortgage face a ticking time bomb. It would either be a choice of hastily scraping the money together to pay off their mortgage, selling their property or the possibility of repossession
Pakistan Becomes 5th Most Populous Nation Pakistan has surpassed Brazil to become the fifth-most populous country on Earth, as the southern Asian nation’s population has surged beyond 220 million people. In March, Pakistan conducted its first population census in two decades, which was possible thanks to improved security after years of violence linked to al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. The officials counted every individual and their housing unit in a countrywide doorto-door exercise that lasted for more than two months, said the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, which conducted the census. The government released the outcome on last month. The figure came in much higher than the earlier estimate of around 200 million. The population in the country’s four provinces and the tribal regions near the Afghan border stood at 207.77 million, according to the bureau. Another 15 million people live in the disputed regions of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in the north, near the country’s border with China. But the population of these two regions are not included along with that of Pakistan’s because of the disputes, although people from these areas are allowed to hold Pakistani passports. Pakistan was previously the sixthmost populous country in the world, with an estimated population of around 200 million before the census, but it had now surpassed Brazil,
which has a population of about 210 million. Pakistan’s population has been growing at an average rate of 2.4 percent per year in the past two decades, despite efforts by the government to control the rapid increase in population, the data shows. “This is a surprising factor. The rate is much higher than estimates,” said Shakeel Ramay, a researcher with Islamabad-based Sustainable Development Policy Institute. Ramay said, for a country like Pakistan with limited resources, such a huge population could become a burden if innovative policies are not made to turn the youth bulge into an asset. “You got to have some policy framework to promote entrepreneurship to engage a sea of people … Otherwise, more individuals means more consumption of resources,” he explained.

Edicts For Humanity’s Betterment Dr A Q Khan
There are many edicts in the Holy Quran whereby humanity would benefit if they were applied conscientiously. Here are just a few: Deal gently with people (3:159). Restrain anger and pardon all mankind (3:134). Be good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, neighbours, the needy, strangers and the wayfarer (4:36). It is not for you to be arrogant because man is the meanest of creatures (7:13). Hold to forgiveness, command what is right and turn away from the ignorant (6). Speak mildly to people; perchance he may take warning (20:44). Be moderate, lower your voice, for the harshest of sounds is the braying of the donkey (8). Let not some men among you laugh at others. It may be that the latter are better than the former (49:11). Be kind to you parents and say not a word of contempt to them (17:23). When you deal with others in transactions… reduce them to writing (2:28). If the debtor is in difficulty, grant him time till it is easy for him to repay; but if you remit it by way of charity, that is best for you (2:280). Those who draw usury (exorbitant interest) will not stand except as one… driven to madness (2:275). Do not use your property as bait for the judges with the intent that you may wrongfully and knowingly eat up a little of other people’s property (2:188). Be steadfast in prayer and fulfil the contracts you have made (2:177). If one of
you deposits a thing on trust with another, let the trustee faithfully discharge his trust (2:283). And cover not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth when you know it (2:42). Stand out firmly for justice as witnesses to Allah, even if against yourselves or your parents (4:135). From what is left by parents... there is a share for man and a share for woman (4:7). There is a share for a woman, whether the property is small or large (4:7). Don’t eat up unjustly the property of orphans (25). Concerning orphans, the best thing to do is what is for their good (2:220). If two parties among the believers fall into a quarrel, make peace between them (28). Avoid suspicion as much as possible, for suspicion in some cases is a sin; and spy not on each other nor speak ill of each other behind their backs (49:12). Conceal not evidence, for whoever conceals it, his heart is tainted with sin (2:283). Spend in charity out of the substance (57:7). Give charity to those who are in need … (2:273). Don’t be a miser or extravagant (17:29). Destroy not your charity by talking of your generosity (2:264). Enjoin the right behaviour with people (2:44). Do not indulge in evil or mischief on earth (2:60). And who is more unjust than he who forbids people from worshiping in the places of Allah? (2:114). Fight in the cause of Allah with those who fight you, but do not transgress limits (2:190). Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clearly from falsehood (2:256). Don’t
commit adultery for it is a shameful and evil act (17:32). On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than he or she can bear (2:286). Stay together and try not to be divided among yourselves (3:103). Contemplate the wonders of the creation in the heavens and on the earth (3:191). Allah Almighty shall never ignore the work of any man or woman (3:195). Prohibited to you for marriage are your near blood relatives (4:23). Never should a believer kill a believer (4:92). Help not one another in transgression, sin and rancour. Fear Allah (5:2). Help one another in good deeds and piety (5:2). Stand out firmly for Allah and witnesses to fair dealings and let not the hatred of others swerve you to depart from justice (5:8). Dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine and some other things are prohibited (5:3). Intoxicants are an abomination (5:90). Gambling is prohibited (5:90). Don’t revile those whom they call upon besides Allah lest they, out of spite, revile Allah (6:108). O children of Adam (pbuh), wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink, but waste not by excess (7:31). If one among the pagans asks you for asylum, grant it to him so that he may hear the word of Allah (9:6). Allah loves those who make themselves pure (9:108). Never give up hope of Allah’s mercy as only kafirs despair of Allah’s mercy (12:87). For those who do wrong in ignorance, Allah is forgiving and most merciful (16:119). Invite all to the
Ways To Support Your Community For A Happier You Helping others helps you. Why? Because when you do something for someone else, the reward centre in your brain is stimulated, releasing a ‘helper’s high.’ A recent report by the BMJ found that those who engaged in volunteering regularly appeared to experience higher levels of mental well-being than those who never did so. Volunteering can increase volunteers’ longevity, improve their mental health, keep them fitter, and enable them to cope better with illness when it occur. On top of that, your stress levels and immune system benefit, too. Giving back in this way can be helpful in boosting confidence in people who have had to take time off work. In terms of how much time is beneficial, he says that: “It differs, we vary as individuals in how much we need social approval; but it will naturally increase our self-esteem, adoption of healthy behaviours and may reduce our overall vulnerability to depression.” From buying milk and supporting dairy farmers to volunteering time to check in on an elderly neighbour and downloading local food sharing apps to give away your surplus birthday cake, here’s the little things that pack a big punch. British MPs Concerned Over Human Rights Violations In Kashmir A British parliamentary delegation, on a visit to Pakistan, has expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights violations in Indian Kashmir. Addressing a news conference along with Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sardar Masood Khan, the members of the delegation urged the international community to take notice of the Indian atrocities being inflicted on Kashmiri people in the occupied valley. British MP Andrew Flint said the Kashmir dispute is a human rights issue and urged the world to listen to the voices of the Kashmiris. “I stand with truth. It is the basic right of people to live with freedom and peace. The rest of the world needs to know what is happening in Kashmir,” he said. Wajid Khan, another Member of Parliament and part of the delegation, strongly condemned the human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and said the blood of the Kashmiris is “as valuable as that of anyone living in Britain or any other country”. “We want to listen to the Kashmiris’ voices by going there,” he said. “Kashmiris have to decide about their future themselves.” The delegation said it would request the Indian ambassador back home to allow a fact-finding mission to visit Indian Kashmir. Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sardar Masood Khan said the British parliamentarians are playing an important role in highlighting the Kashmir dispute. He said particularly the Labour party is at the forefront and has expressed commitment to play its role in resolution of the lingering Kashmir dispute.
7. Support your neighbours Whether you can offer an item to borrow, extra assistance at at event or to help out with a spot of babysitting, communicating with the people who live close by is a great way to add more impact and meaning to your days. If your British reserve is hampering your ‘get to know you’ efforts, you can always download an app that connects you with your neighbours. Try Nextdoor, which verifies people by postcode.

Sea Of Green: Historically Significant Celebrations For Sheffield Iffat Yasmin Celebrations held earlier this month to observe Pakistan’s 70 years of independence marked the first time Sheffield witnessed the flag of Pakistan hoisted in a ceremony marking the occasion. In what has become one of the largest multicultural gatherings in Sheffield, people dressed primarily in green and white reflecting the colours of the Pakistani flag. The Pakistan Muslim Centre Sheffield organised a series of events, which witnessed over 3,000 people coming together to mark the special occasion. On Sunday the 13th of August commencing the celebrations witnessed a historically significant flag-hoisting ceremony. At 8pm local time and 12am Pakistan time, the community of Sheffield, for the first time, raised the British and Pakistani flags together with a backdrop of British and Pakistani national anthems. Supporting the community during this heart-rending procession and witnessing the dark sky being coloured from the sight of the fireworks were various dignitaries including Deputy Lieutenant, Colonel Nick Williams, Civic Mayor and Mayoress. They were joined by Councillor George Derx and Mrs Pauline Derx, The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Eve Rose Keenan, together with her Consort, Mr. Pat Keenan and various other representatives Also present and observing the children’s performances in the open air were various individuals who experienced firsthand the torment of partition and independence. Mr Asad Ali Syed, who recently appeared on the BBC documentary ‘My family, partition and me’ was just one of those individuals who was clearly being overwhelmed with emotion as he witnessed the third and some forth generation of British Pakistani children perform on stage. Hafeas Rehman Secretary to Pakistan Muslim Centre said “Watching these British Pakistani children sway left to right all dressed in green and white and waiving the Pakistani Flag
reminds me of the movement of the sea; this sea of green we are witnessing today on the PMC’s stage is the face of Pakistan’s Positive future. “I’m so honoured that this centre is providing a platform of opportunities to people of all walks of life to develop themselves, to develop their parents homeland and to most importantly contribute to their own birth country Britain.” The celebrations then transformed into a festival where the PMC car park on the 14th August was set to host a family fun day with food, clothes and information stalls. A boxing ring set up for the children together with a centre stage, face painting amongst other activities, the day was set for communities to enjoy a day of culture and live entertainment. Guests were also welcomed with Halva Puree (a traditional delicacy, soft semolina and chapatti, puff pastry based breakfast) making the celebrations a highly sensational experience for all communities. “Since their inception The Pakistan Independence Celebrations have been integral to the fabric of our existence here at the Pakistan Muslim Centre,” commented Chairman Muhammad Ali. “Pakistan Muslim Centre has never felt prouder, with over three thousand attending a week of celebrations, these festivities have really proven to be a phenomenal achievement for South Yorkshire. “As one of the largest community centres in the region it was important we held an official and inclusive event. The attendance of people from all walks of life, attending in their thousands not hundreds certainly corroborates the importance this centre continues to play.” Perhaps the most poignant moment of the Independence Day celebrations was when the former Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox and chairman Muhammad Ali released two doves as a sign of peace, love and friendship between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia has welcomed around two million international pilgrims to the annual Hajj, making it one of the largest annual international gatherings, and which, for many Muslims, is the highlight of their spiritual lives. The responsibility for organizing the pilgrimage falls on the government of Saudi Arabia, under direct supervision of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman; a huge logistical undertaking that will run until Hajj ends on the 4th of September, 2017. The number of foreign pilgrims has multiplied exponentially over the years, from as few as 24,000 in 1941 to 1.325 million in 2016. Including local pilgrims that reside in Saudi Arabia, a total of 1.86 million Muslims performed the Hajj last year. Saudi officials have prepared to receive the massive influx of pilgrims, many of whom also visit the second Holy City of Madinah. The Hajj team deployed on the ground speaks over a dozen languages to ensure that the needs of pilgrims are met. Mina is also known as the City of Tents as it hosts tens of thousands of airconditioned tents as temporary accommodation for a significant portion of the pilgrims expected to take part in Hajj this year. Mina is located between Mount Arafat and Makkah's Grand Mosque. The tents are neatly arranged in rows and grouped into areas labelled with numbers and colors according to nationality. Every pilgrim is given a badge with an assigned number and color to help them find the way back to their tent if they get lost. To prevent fires, the tents are constructed of Teflon-coated fiberglass, and are fitted with sprinklers and fire extinguishers. More than 17,000 Civil Defense personnel deployed to serve Hajj pilgrims. More than 17,000 highly trained personnel, supported by 3,000 advanced vehicles, are in position to guarantee pilgrims the highest level of safety. Three hundred ground ambulances, 30 motorbikes, 113 ambulance centers and 8 air ambulances are also deployed. Over 2,000 Saudi Red Crescent Authority personnel deployed in Makkah, Madinah and other holy sites to provide ambulance services to pilgrims during Hajj. Millions apply from Muslim-majority countries but due to a quota system, not everyone is able to come – the Saudi authorities usually allocate 1,000 places for each million Muslim per country. the top 10 countries who have the highest numbers of Hajj pilgrims in 2017: 1. Indonesia – 221,000 2. Pakistan – 179,210 3. India – 170,000 4. Bangladesh – 127,198 5. Egypt – 108,000 6. Iran – 86,500 7. Nigeria – 79,000 8. Turkey – 79,000 9. Algeria – 36,000 10. Morocco – 31,000 Economic experts have said Hajj and Umrah revenues are poised to exceed $150 billion by 2022, in light of the expected mergers of economic blocs and groupings to meet the growing demand on Hajj and Umrah economics in terms of transport, commercial stores and expansion in small, medium enterprises (SMEs).
Tesco Scraps Plastic Bags In Radio Garden Is The Next Favour Of ‘Bags For Life’ Internet Maze To Get Lost In A good Reddit thread, Game Of Thrones theories and indepth Wikipedia topics are just three examples of online rabbit holes which are easy to get lost down, clicking through page after page. Now a new website has popped up which has the potential to follow suit and steal hours of your life – Radio Garden – an interactive map that enables users to travel the world listening to different live radio stations. The site is the work of Dutch designers Studio Puckney, with the data coming from an international research project called Transnational Radio Encounters, which featured input from a host of international universities. The result is a map, one that allows users scroll around the globe, stopping and listening to live radio as green dots appear. Many locations also contain more than one station. As well as the live radio feature, the site has a history section that features clips from broadcasting history that according to the site itself “show how radio has tried to cross borders”. There’s also a Jingles and Stories section – which offer more insight into the catchy (or not) theme tunes we hear on the radio, and stories of radio listeners around the world respectively. Plenty to listen to but keep an eye on the clock, otherwise you might lose an entire evening.
Tesco is to stop selling single-use plastic bags in its stores, replacing them with "bags for life" at double the price. From August 28, 5p plastic bags will no longer be available at Tesco's checkouts. The new 10p bags will be made of 94% recycled plastic and can be exchanged for a new one if damaged. Tesco's decision follows a trial in Aberdeen, Dundee and Norwich, where they found that bag sales reduced by 25% as customers opted to bring their own from home. In October 2015, the government ordered major retailers in England to stop giving away single use bags for free - and demanded that proceeds go to charity. Tesco's own Bags of Help scheme has provided £33 million to 6,400 local community projects since 2015 despite the store giving out 1.5 billion fewer single use bags in that time. Early figures collected in 2016 showed that customers in England took home six billion fewer bags in the first six months after the rule change. At the end of 2016, the Marine Conservation Society said the number of bags found on British beaches had almost halved since the policy was introduced. Lidl replaced single use bags with 5p reusable ones in July of this year. Sainsbury's 5p version is reusable and recyclable. Waitrose still offers 5p single use bags and 10p bags for life.

Germany Brings Back 674 Tons Of Gold Reserves From France & US The German central bank (Bundesbank) has brought back 674 tons of gold reserves kept in Paris and New York since the Cold War. Some 53,780 gold bars, each weighing 12.5kg and worth €440,000, have been shipped to Germany over the last four years, said the bank. The last 100 tons were moved from Paris earlier this year, which means the Bundesbank now holds no reserves in France. The bank has already repatriated 940 tons of gold from London to save on storage fees. In 2013 Germany said it planned to transfer at least half of the country’s gold to Frankfurt by 2020. The move was in response to public concerns about having so much of the nation’s wealth kept abroad. Over 50 percent of Germany’s gold reserves are now in Frankfurt. The remainder is stored in London and New York, where it can be quickly exchanged for British pounds or US dollars in an economic emergency. Germany is the world’s second biggest holder of gold with 3,374 tons. The US Federal Re-

serve holds the most bullion, its gold reserves amount to 8,134 tons, according to the World Gold Council. The UK holds 310 tons, and the European Central Bank 505 tons. The Bundesbank has been criticized at home for keeping a major part of Germany’s gold reserves abroad. Critics demand the complete return of the gold to the country. They regard the gold as insurance in case of a crisis, and the immediate physical availability would be the decisive criterion. Trying to move gold from New York in 2014, the Bundesbank met obstacles from US authorities when German officials wanted to inspect the gold kept in US vaults. Some even doubted the German gold was still physically there. The Bundesbank dismissed all the doubts, saying it received annual updates from foreign central banks where the gold was being stored. It said that the “integrity, reputation and security of these foreign depositories are beyond reproach.”

Luton Airport Named The Worst In The UK London Luton Airport has been named as the worst airport in the UK after recording the lowest customer satisfaction, according to new research. The Bedfordshire airport was given only one star in half of the 10 categories featured in the study by consumer group Which?, including for its range of shops and food outlets, toilets and staff. It earned a customer score of just 29%, based on overall satisfaction and how likely passengers are to recommend the airport to a friend. Some of the 435 airport users surveyed described it as “chaos”, “crowded” and a “rip off”. The airport is undergoing a £110 million redevelopment which has led to disruption, although it has languished at the bottom of the Which? airport ranking for five years. An airport spokesman said: “We’re disappointed in these results as they don’t accurately reflect the experience of the majority of our passengers. “Which? polled just 435 of its subscribers who had travelled through London Luton Airport between May 2016 and May 2017 – the most intensive phase of the airport’s redevelopment. “Of the 1.7 million people who responded to our ongoing customer service tracking, during the first six months of 2017, 75% told us they were happy with their experience, a 5% improvement on the same period last year.
“Since then we have made significant improvements to the airport’s infrastructure, added new shops and restaurants and passenger services such as free wi-fi. “As Which? acknowledges, the airport is currently undergoing the biggest transformation in its history. We appreciate the patience of our passengers as we develop the airport, which will result in a better experience for everyone.” Doncaster Sheffield earned the highest customer satisfaction score at 87%, with five-star customer service. Passengers referred to it as “relaxed” and “quiet”, while one described a bank holiday as “peaceful with no sense of rush or pressure”. Here are the top five UK airports according to Which?: 1. Doncaster Sheffield (87%) 2. London Southend (84%) =3. Norwich (75%) =3. Southampton (75%) 5. Exeter (71%) Here are the five worst UK airports according to Which?: 1. London Luton (29%) 2. EU Nationals Applying For UK Citizenship Jumps By 80% Since Brexit The number of EU nationals applying for British citizenship has nearly doubled in the wake of the Brexit vote, official statistics reveal. They show the figure jumped by 80% as thousands originally from other countries in the bloc sought naturalisation. There were 28,502 applications for citizenship from EU nationals in the year ending in June 2017 - up from 15,871 in the previous 12 months. The rise is in contrast to a general downward trend in the overall numbers seeking citizenship, with total applications falling by 8% to 135,912. Historically immigrants from outside the EU have been much more likely than EU migrants to apply for UK citizenship - for example the vast majority of long term migrants from India or Pakistan are now British. This reflects the fact that EU membership means long term residents from elsewhere in the EU have almost the same rights as Britons. But that will change after Brexit - so it's not surprising many EU citizens living here are seeking UK citizenship, at least as an insurance policy. A fifth (21%) of citizenship applications now come from EU nationals, compared with one in ten (11%) in the previous year and one in twenty in 2011/12.
Applications from nationals of eight eastern European countries that joined the union in 2004 rose by more than two fifths (45%) to 9,841 in the year to June, including 6,179 from Poles. There was an even sharper jump in applications from nationals of 14 longer-term member states. These more than doubled year-on-year to 13,921, including 2,950, 2,508 and 2,338 from Italian, French and German nationals respectively. The rise in citizenship bids from EU nationals contrasts with the number lodged by those from the rest of the world, which fell by 18% to 107,410 in the year to June. The Home Office report said increases in applications from EU nationals in recent years are "likely to reflect immigration in earlier years while the most recent rise may be partly due to the impact of rule changes and recent events". Those seeking British citizenship by naturalisation are generally required to have lived in the UK for at least five years. An application costs £1,282 and successful applicants are invited to a citizenship ceremony where they make an oath of allegiance and a pledge to respect the rights, freedoms and laws of the UK. They are presented with a certificate of British citizenship and a welcome pack. Other data shows a sharp post-referendum rise in the number of documents issued to EU nationals certifying their right to live in the UK permanently, with more than 130,000 handed out in the year to the end of June. Separate migration estimates showed an increase in the number of EU citizens leaving the country. Faced with the uncertainty of Brexit, it appears that EU citizens have responded in different ways - some have been trying to solidify their rights to remain in the UK, while others have been voting with their feet and leaving.
Hundreds Of ‘Potentially Offensive’ Car Number Plates Withdrawn Hundreds of number plate combinations that are potentially offensive or in poor taste are banned from being used each year, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has said. The list of withheld registrations includes combinations which should never be seen on the roads, including any that end with the three letters ARS or DAM and those that are specific to the year. Among the approximately 300 that will not be released next week when 67 vehicle registrations become available are NO67 FUN, NO67 END, MU67 GED, DO67 ERR, BA67 TRD and ST67 BBD. In June, the number plate JH11 HAD was spotted in Newport, South Wales, and reported to authorities. It was subsequently withdrawn, and the DVLA said the plate "slipped through the net". Information also revealed that other combinations such as JE** HAD and *J11 HAD were also banned. The Swansea-based agency said in the FOI document that it has a responsibility make sure the combination used on registration numbers "does not cause upset or offence". The letter continued: "Such numbers are withheld if they are likely to cause offence or embarrassment to the general population in this country on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply because they are in poor taste when displayed correctly on a number plate." Banned combinations cannot be issued or sold at a DVLA Personalised Registration auction.

The Agency holds and exhaustive list of potentially naughty, nasty and offensive number plates, which it updates annually. Other combinations included are: :: Four-letter combinations: *B** UMS, *G** ODS and *R** APE :: Five-letter combinations: AB** USE, AN** GER and BO** SOM :: 2004 vehicle registrations: A**4 RSE, BO04 ZZY and BL04 JOB :: 2011 vehicle registrations: BO11 OC*, DR11 GG* and PO11 CE* A DVLA spokeswoman said: "Many people enjoy displaying a personalised number plate and the vast majority of registration numbers are made available - but we hold back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste. "We try to identify all combinations that may cause offence, and on the rare occasion where potentially offensive numbers slip through the net, steps are taken to withdraw the number."

Affects of the Solar Eclipse Most calendar years have 2 solar eclipses , for some this view will be overwhelming. But what people don’t consider is the affects of this astronomical event. Below are some of the affects you will come across during the period of the solar eclipse . Animals rely on a day/night cycle in order to function correctly, and the sudden darkness can trick animals into switching their behaviour to night-time mode. Nocturnal animals like crickets may start chirping, mosquitoes may come out to feed, and predators such as owls could wake up and venture out of the nest. Other birds, such as geese, instinctively return to roost when the eclipse starts.
eclipses can cause wind speeds to slow by 1 m/s. Europe managed to keep the lights on during the 2015 eclipse by preparing for it: When the Sun disappeared, utilities switched to other power sources. Eclipses can be bad omens indeed, especially if you live in India and have just sat down to tea. A local superstition is that the sun’s rays help keep disease away, and during a solar eclipse the lack of these rays causes food to be poisoned. Food is not prepared nor eaten during an eclipse, and any prepared food is thrown away. (Strangely enough, science has since shown that the UV light from the Sun does have an—admittedly small—antibiotic effect. So perhaps this isn't a total myth after all.)
pregnancy is also said to be affected, Pregnant women are sometimes asked to take certain precautions when it comes to a total solar eclipse, as Bees markedly increase activity. Do You Know What Number Plate Characters Stand For? The “peculiarity” of the UK number plate is most likely the reason almost two-thirds of drivers don’t actually understand them. New research shows only 38% of 2,000 drivers asked were able to explain the 17-year-old system of letters and numbers – whereby letters represent the location of registration, and numbers denote age. The modern-day licence plate can cause confusion, but car buyers should know the importance of being able to ‘read’ them, and determine the age of a potential purchase. Prior to 2000, the first letter of a licence plate indicated its age – a fact not known by as many as 67% of drivers in this survey. The art of ‘reading’ number plates appears to have been particularly lost on younger drivers. A fifth of those aged between 17 and 25 admitted they had no idea the plates carried any information.
It is likely the “peculiarity” of the letters and numbers combination which causes confusion. The location where a car was first registered is likely to be of little interest to the average car buyer, the age most certainly should be – so it’s revealing that so many drivers appear not to understand what the digits on a modern number plate mean. It is much easier to tell the age of the car when it is registered between March and August – when the numerals indicate the year exactly, such as 16 for 2016, 17 for 2017 and so on – than it is if it is registered from September to February. In the latter case, 66 can mean either late 2016 or, confusingly, early 2017. Men and women it seem have a largely similar ability to read post2000 plates, with around 65% of each gender being able to correctly calculate a car’s age from its registration alone. Only a third of women, though – compared to two-thirds of men – could identify a 1994 model based on the old letter-based system.

This one is actually backed by science 100 percent. Though you're totally going to want to look up at this amazing sight, it is extremely dangerous to look at the sun with the naked eye. Doing so can cause permanent damage to the retina, and in the worst case scenario, it can even cause blindness.
This is why special solar eclipse glasses are sold exclusively for this event. The only time you should remove these glasses is during those two minutes or less when the sun is completely obstructed.
Modern Slavery In Britain Car washes, factories and farms: Two centuries after it was abolished in Britain slavery is a huge trade that is flourishing and hiding in plain sight Male victims can commonly be found working in car washes, while many women and children are sexually exploited. A parallel society exists in modern Britain in which a “sub-current of vulnerable people” are routinely exploited as modern slaves by ruthless gangs, the National Crime Agency has said. The NCA, said it was abhorrent that the practice was thriving in many areas of Britain, where slavery was ostensibly abolished more than 200 years ago. Victims of exploitation were often hiding in plain sight. They could be nextdoor neighbours secretly trafficked into servitude, the chatty women working at the nail bar, the men washing cars at the local garage. He called on members of the public to look for the signs of modern slavery and urged them to report concerns to police. Important indicators include injuries and symptoms of stress, but could also be worn clothing or a lack of belongings, avoiding eye contact or appearing reluctant to talk to strangers. Modern slavery is so widespread, that members of the public would be regularly, though unknowingly, coming into contact with its victims. Police operations will focus in the coming months on several key areas: Forced prostitution Organised crime groups can make up to £600 per day per woman trafficked into forced prostitution. The NCA and police recently broke up a Romanian gang that is suspected to have made about €5 million in criminal profits. The group used the internet to advertise the services of victims trafficked for sex, and forced them to launder the proceeds through criminally controlled bank accounts. The police operation led to the safeguarding of ten women and the arrests of three men in northeast England with suspected links to the group. The national referral mechanism, a scheme for recording and supporting victims of modern slavery, registered 951 adults last year under the category of sexual exploitation. The mechanism is acknowledged to reveal only the tip of the iceberg. Maritime/Fishing industry Traffickers and illegal or unlicensed gangmasters target a range of industries including fisheries. Police say that victims of slavery in fishing are often eastern European, African or Asian men and women, who are promised a job in the UK. They are forced by their traffickers to work on boats or
in food processing factories for little or no money. In 2014 the Home Office said that 24 maritime workers had been identified as potential victims of trafficking and slavery, but acknowledged that the real figure was likely to be far higher. There have been reports of foreign fishermen suffering malnutrition on British-owned boats. Trafficking of children Child sexual exploitation is a big part of modern slavery and the NCA includes the various grooming scandals in Britain in its findings. The UK is the third most prevalent country of origin for victims of modern slavery, in substantial part because of all the child victims in Rochdale, Oxford and other regions where grooming rings have been found. The national referral mechanism registered 215 British under-age victims of sexual exploitation last year, more than double the number the previous year. Under-age victims of all other nationalities accounted for 147 records. Forced labour, with focus on agriculture, food and manufacturing sectors In May the NCA launched an operation with European law enforcement partners that focused on forced labour in agriculture, food and manufacturing. Of the 133 suspects arrested across the continent, 46 were in the UK. The NCA said yesterday that slavery existed in great swathes of the labour market, from factory workers to fruit pickers on farms. Recently the NCA led an operation that rescued five Slovakian men who were allegedly being forced to work at a car wash in Bristol. A man and woman, suspected of being part of a wider organised crime group, were arrested. There have been numerous cases of slavery rings at nail bars. Cannabis farms Forced labour on cannabis farms is a problem with Vietnamese gangs exploiting mainly Vietnamese victims. In February police in Wiltshire uncovered a vast cannabis farm tended by trafficked teenagers as young as 15. Police said at the time: “No one would do this by choice . . . this was slave labour. “There is no natural light, no running water . . . this is hard, manual labour — it’s not just a walk around with a watering can. I was shocked by the scale of it. There is no fresh air.”

World’s Biggest Samosa Weighing 153kg Feeds Homeless In London A charity says the world's biggest samosa has been fed to homeless people in London. The samosa, weighing in at 153kg made by staff at Muslim Aid was prepared, cooked and served up at the East London Mosque. Temporary residents from nearby Booth House, run by the Salvation Army and the largest men’s hostel in London came to join in the fun and enjoy the food. The challenge was dreamt up to draw attention to the generosity of Muslim people during religious festivals like Eid. Muslim Aid, said, “Everyone knows and loves a samosa. "We wanted to make a larger-than-ever version of this popular food to demonstrate visually how people of the Muslim faith work tirelessly throughout the
year, and particularly during Eid, doing charitable acts to support the unfortunate in the community around them and further afield. "The samosa will feed the homeless near our offices in London. Meanwhile donations via Muslim Aid will feed hundreds of thousands in the developing world."

World XI Team To Tour Pakistan Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi has announced the 14-man squad which will tour the country in September to play three T20Is, being called the Independence Cup, in Lahore. The team — which includes stars such as South African stars Hashim Amla, David Miller, Albie Morkel and Imran Tahir, West Indian Samuel Badree and Darren Sammy — will be led by South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis. Other players which are a part of the squad are Australian George Bailey, Ben Cutting and Tim Paine. New Zealand’s all-rounder Grant Elliot, former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood, Sri Lanka opener Tamim Iqbal and Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera complete the squad. “The team will arrive in Dubai two days before the matches and practice there,” announced Sethi. “A three-member security team is going to visit Pakistan on September 1. They will discuss security arrangements with the Punjab Government.” Captain Du Plessis, in a statement published by the PCB, said that he is happy to do his part in the return of cricket to Pakistan. “I am honoured to have been appointed as captain of such a diverse, attractive and well-balanced side,” he said. “Like most of the players, I look forward to my maiden tour to Lahore and play my part in the safe and gradual resumption of international cricket in Pakistan.” On the topic of security, Du Plessis showed his faith in the arrangements made by the PCB. “All the members of the squad have complete faith and trust in the assessment and the judgement of the security experts, who have assured us that there will be no compromise on safety,” said Du Plessis. “As professionals, we are getting paid to

play in the series, but the bottom line is if we don’t feel safe, no amount of money can get us there. We will land in Lahore with nothing but cricket on our minds.” The 33-year-old said he was looking forward to playing in Pakistan. “In my career, I’ve featured in many exciting matches against Pakistan. But playing Pakistan in front of their passionate supporters will be a unique experience, which I can’t wait to experience.” South African Test star Hashim Amla is nursing a shoulder injury but believes he will be fit for the three T20Is in Lahore. “I am looking forward to the trip to Pakistan,” said Amla. “The rehabilitation of my injured shoulder is progressing well and I am confident of being fit for the matches.” Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, who tasted international cricket at home during the Zimbabwe tour and the final of the second edition of Pakistan Super League, believes the World XI tour will bring better times for the game in the country. “I am really excited to see the World XI team coming to Pakistan and keenly look forward to playing in front of our committed crowds and supporters,” he said. “I can assure all Pakistan cricket fans that we have missed playing in front of them, like they have missed watching us live in action. But this wait is about to end and I am sure better times lie ahead of all of us.” He continued: “I am confident that through this tour of the World XI, the global cricket community, including players, media and visitors will get a better understanding and perception of Pakistan, which is a peace-loving and extremely hospitable nation that loves its cricket.”
More than two and a quarter million speeding tickets were issued by UK police last year, with speeds exceeding 150mph recorded. A Freedom of Information request gathered figures from British constabularies, with a total 2,293,228 speed-related offences uncovered in 2016. The most tickets were handed out by police in Avon and Somerset, although this could be a result of enforcement of the national speed limit on smart motorways in the region. Every police force averaged more than 65,000 speeding offences in 2016. Fines from the top 10 forces totalled more than £17 million. Officers in West Mercia and Suffolk recorded an alarming top speed of 154mph, closely flowed by 151mph in Nottinghamshire, and 148mph in Avon
and Somerset – all of which are more than double the national speed limit. Constabularies in Thames Valley – which features large portions of the M25, M40 and M4 – and Greater Manchester, recorded the second and third highest number of speeding offences respectively. And the problems don’t seem to be contained to faster roads. Government research revealed last month that as many as 8 out of 10 drivers knowingly ‘ignore’ 20mph speed zones. Reported road casualty statistics for 2015 show that 222 people lost their lives in accidents in which exceeding the speed limit was a contributory factor, equating to 15 per cent of all road fatalities.

Boxer Amir Khan May Face Divorce Bill Of Up To £15M Boxer Amir Khan is facing the prospect of handing over up to half of his fortune to his estranged wife Faryal Makhdoom in a divorce settlement, it has
been reported. The Bolton star is said to be worth between £25m and £30m, thanks to winnings of around £20m. He is also in charge of a property empire, Lancashire Properties (UK) Limited, across the north west of the country as well as head of a boxing promotion company. He is likely to have to give up a large chunk of his money. His lawyers might argue that his cash is tied up in family businesses and investments but
that will make no difference apart from to draw the process out. He will most likely be told to break-up any firms and sell any investments to make sure he can pay the money into court.' Faryal announced that she is pregnant with the couple's second child recently. It was reported that Faryal does not want Khan's support in raising the child, with sources saying that she "doesn't want anything more from Amir now". “They're back on speaking terms, trying to keep everything ¬civilised for the sake of their daughter and extended families, but the relationship is finished. She has told him she will happily bring up their new child without his support, and the divorce is going ahead. She's a strong woman — and the pregnancy isn't going to change that,” said the source. Earlier in August, Khan announced that his marriage was over, claiming his partner had a secret rendezvous with fellow boxer Anthony Joshua.
Surgery Waits Up By 400% In Wales Since 2013 Five times as many patients in Wales are waiting more than a year for surgery compared to four years ago, the Royal College of Surgeons has said. An RCS Freedom of Information request showed more than 3,600 patients had waited more than 12 months in March, compared to almost 700 in March 2013. The head of the Welsh NHS said missing waiting targets was "unacceptable". The RCS pointed to the progress in reducing both 26 and 36 week waiting times for surgery in recent years but said overall waits were "too long". Trauma and orthopaedics surgery have the long-

est waiting times but there were declines in waiting times for specialities such as urology and cardiology. In England, just 1,302 patients waited longer than a year for treatment in March.
The #Hashtag Turns 10 The hashtag was first used in its modern sense 10 years ago on Twitter, when an early adopter wondered if it could be used to categorise group messages. Former Uber and Google engineer Chris Messina tweeted on August 23 2007 to ask the wider Twitter universe if using the “pound” symbol at the start of a key phrase could be a logical way to organise conversation and categorise tweets. The idea took off and by the end of that year, the most popular hashtag, #noticias – which means news in Spanish – had been used around 9,000 times. As Twitter and social media in general grew, so did the impact of the symbol as a mechanism for focusing discussion and offering a place for users to discuss a single topic. Today, an average of 125 million hashtags are shared on Twitter every day, and the most popular hashtag of the year so far has been used more than 300 million times. That hashtag is #BTSBBMAS, and refers to K-Pop band BTS and their victory at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, further demonstrating the far-reaching ability of the tool. As well as reacting to news, entire social movements have gained momentum, followers and a platform for wider conversation through hashtags. Topics such as #BlackLivesMatter and #IceBuck-
etChallenge have been two of the biggest campaigns that have seen their place in the public consciousness increased because of social media and their associated hashtags. In terms of tributes too, #PutYourBatsOut in honour of the late Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes offered another poignant example of the symbol reaching a global audience. Twitter Ads info and privacy On the lighter side, former MP Ed Balls’ Twitter mishap, when he accidentally tweeted his own name on April 28 2011, quickly became an online sensation and an annual event, complete with its own hashtag – #EdBallsDay. The debate around #TheDress in 2015 also sparked input from social media from around the world, as well as celebrities with Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift among those who responded with their thoughts on what colour the dress was. Interaction and conversation has changed since the emergence of social media, but the evolution of the hashtag into a facet of everyday speech has been one of the key components of that rise. The conversations a single hashtag has provoked have made headline news around the world, changed political landscapes and shaped lives in many cases – amazing power for a single character of the digital age.
The Hijab Emoji is Coming to Apple Devices The Hijab emoji will be coming to iOS devices later on in the year. Apple’s CEO announced a range of new emojis coming to Apple devices in a tweet: The Hijab emoji features a woman wearing a purple Hijab: In late 2016, the Hijab emoji was approved by
Unicode after 15-year-old Rayouf Alhumedhi from Saudi Arabia submitted a proposal to the non-profit consortium which reviews and develops standard modern character sets used in computers and mobile devices. Will there be an option to choose different Hijab colours? Who knows!

UK Resettles 8,500 Syrian Refugees New figures have revealed that more than 8,500 Syrian refugees have been resettled in the UK under the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement (VPR) scheme. The latest quarterly Home Office migration statistics, which were published show that over 1,200 refugees arrived through the scheme in the second quarter of 2017, meaning over a third of the 20,000 refugees the UK Government pledged to resettle by 2020 are already in the UK. Approximately half of those who have arrived under the scheme are children. The figures also show Syrian refugees have been housed by more than 200 local authorities across the United Kingdom. The Government continues to work with councils and devolved administrations to ensure placements are available as more vulnerable people arrive. “I’m delighted with the significant progress we have made with the VPR scheme. Over 8,500 people have been resettled and more are arriving every month”, said, Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis. “We will continue to work with local authorities and the UNHCR, whose hard work so far has made sure that the scheme is a success, to pro-
vide those who have been displaced by conflict with a safe environment and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.” In September 2015, the Government pledged to resettle 20,000 vulnerable Syrians who have fled the conflict in Syria to neighbouring countries by 2020. Last month, the scheme was expanded to include refugees of all nationalities. Additionally 3,000 children and adults will be resettled from the Middle East and North Africa through our Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme (VCRS). In July the Government announced £1 million funding to help communities support refugees through the Community Sponsorship scheme. The scheme has been running for a year and 53 refugees from the VPRS and VCRShave been welcomed by 10 community groups across the UK. The Government has also already pledged £10m in English language funding to help Syrian families improve their English language skills. This is vital to help those coming to the UK find work, gain independence and give back to the communities that have welcomed them. These resettlement schemes are only one of the ways the Government is supporting vulnerable children and adults who have fled danger and conflict. The UK Government remains the second largest donor in humanitarian assistance and has pledged £2.46 billion in aid to Syria and the neighbouring countries. The UK has also provided humanitarian support in response to the Mediterranean migration crisis of more than £100 million since October 2015. This includes providing winter clothing, hygiene kits and emergency medical care for those rescued at sea as well as protection for women and girls at risk of being trafficked.
Rooney Quits International Football
England’s all-time leading goal scorer Wayne Rooney announced his retirement from international football, effective immediately. The 31-year-old superstar had turned down England coach Gareth Southgate’s call to take part in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia, scheduled for September. .
“Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me,” Everton striker Rooney said. “But I believe now is the time to bow out,” he added. Rooney, the former captain of Manchester United, appeared in 119 matches with England, scoring a total of 53 goals. The English star stressed that he would always remain “a passionate England fan”. He announced his retirement just two days after he scored his 200th English Premier League goal during Everton’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City. Rooney made his international debut in February 2003, during England’s 1-3 defeat to Australia.
Saudi Arabia ‘Seeks Iraq’s Help’ To Mend Ties With Iran The government of Saudi Arabia has sought the help of Iraq’s prime minister to mend relations between Riyadh and Tehran, according to news reports. Citing Qasim al-Araji, Iraq’s interior minister, the Iraqi satellite channel Alghadeer reported that Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, had asked Haider al-Abadi to lead the mediation with Iran. “During our visit to Saudi Arabia, they also asked us to do so, and we said that to [the] Iranian side. The Iranian side looked at this demand positively,” Araji was quoted as saying by Alghadeer on Sunday. “After the victories that Iraq has achieved, it [Saudi Arabia] began looking to Iraq, at its true size and leading role. “The calm and stability and the return of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have positive repercussions on the region as a whole.” The visits by the Iraqis come as the Arab Gulf region remains embroiled in its worst crisis in years - a dispute between Qatar and a Saudi-led bloc comprising the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt. Shia-majority Iraq lies on the faultline between Shia Iran and Sunni-ruled Arab Gulf monarchies
including Saudi Arabia. In 2016 Iraq offered to mediate between the two countries. In January 2016, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran after an attack by protesters on its embassy in Tehran. Protesters were angrily reacting to Saudi Arabia's decision to execute Shia religious leader Nimr alNimr, who was put to death along with 46 mostly Sunni Muslims convicted on terrorism charges. At that point, the rival regional powers had been engaged in a war of words following the death of Iranian Hajj pilgrims outside Mecca in 2015. Iran said at least 460 Iranians were killed in the incident, but Saudi Arabia officially reported only 131 Iranians dead. Saudi Arabia and Iran have also accused each other of backing proxies in the war in Yemen and Syria. Earlier news reports quoted Araji as saying that Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud had earlier made the same request to him. Araji reportedly told Salman that Riyadh "should show the best behaviour towards Iranian pilgrims" by allowing them to visit Janna al-Baqi cemetery, an important site for Shia Muslims in Medina.
Rise Of Uninsured Drivers Having A “Devastating” Impact The “devastating” impact of uninsured driving has been underlined by new figures which suggest a rise in accident claims against illegal road users. In the last year there has been an increase of almost 10% in compensation claims by victims of uninsured drivers – the first increase for a decade. The RAC says that, if correct, this could suggest an increase in the number of uninsured drivers which could lead to further rises in car insurance premiums, and pose a greater safety risk to all road users. The increase comes after years of steady reductions in the number of road accident claims involving drivers with no insurance. Since 2004 there has been a 56% drop from around 25,000 per year to roughly 11,000. The spike could be attributed to a combination of factors – from an increase in those driving without cover, to the effectiveness of law enforcement, to changes in the number of vehicles on the road. The numbers of claims handled by MIB
each year highlights the devastating impact of uninsured driving on communities and families up and down the country. As of June 1, the rate of insurance premium tax (IPT) increased from 10% to 12% – double what it was less than two years ago on most policies. The rises – which have added around £20 to a young driver’s premium – had led to fears that more and more people would risk going uninsured.
Eating Disorders Rise Among UK Men The number of adult British men being admitted to hospital with an eating disorder has risen by 70 per cent over the last six years mainly due to the pressure for “body perfection” arising from popular culture, official data showed. National Health Services (NHS) Digital data showed the number of hospital diagnoses in males over 19 years of age rose from 480 in 20102011 to 818 between April 2015 and March 2016, reports the Guardian. The rate of increase was slightly higher among older men, at 70 per cent for the 41-60 age group, compared with 67 per cent in the 26-40 category and 63 per cent among 19- to 25-year-olds. Pressure for body perfection is on the rise for

men of all ages, which is a risk factor for developing an eating disorder. Images of unhealthy male body ideals in the media place unnecessary pressure on vulnerable people who strive for acceptance through the way they look. The Royal College of General Practitioners, said the rise was not surprising “when you consider the unrelenting pressures placed on people by popular culture and social media”. It called for schools, universities and employers to be more aware of the danger signs. These can include excessive dieting or daily trips to the gym, eating large amounts of food, the inappropriate use of laxatives and obsessions around weight and appearance.

Talaq Talaq Talaq: India Joins Pakistan And History Of Pakistan National Anthem Bangladesh To Ban Instant Divorce Custom – Quami Tarana An Indian court has ruled the practice of instant divorce in Islam unconstitutional, marking a major victory for Muslim women, who’ve have had to live with the threat of instant divorce dangling over their heads like a sword. India is one of a handful of countries where a Muslim man can divorce his wife in minutes by saying the word talaq (divorce) three times. The landmark court decision came in response to petitions challenging the so-called "triple talaq" custom. The cases were filed by five Muslim women who had been divorced in this way and two rights groups. Women's rights campaigners have hailed the court's decision as a historic win. There have been cases in which Muslim men in India have divorced their wives by issuing the so-called triple talaq by letter, telephone and, increasingly, by text message, WhatsApp and Skype. A number of these cases made their way to the courts as women contested the custom. Triple talaq divorce has no mention in Sharia Islamic law or the Quran, even though the practice has existed for decades. Islamic scholars say the Quran clearly spells out how to issue a divorce - it has to be spread over three months, allowing a couple time for reflection and reconciliation. Most Islamic countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, have banned triple talaq, but the custom has continued in India, which does not have a uniform set of laws on marriage and divorce that apply to every citizen.

Three of the five Supreme Court judges called the controversial practice "un-Islamic, arbitrary and unconstitutional". One of the judges, Justice Kurien Joseph, said the practice was not an essential part of Islam and enjoyed no protection. The judges also said it was "manifestly arbitrary" to allow a man to "break down marriage whimsically and capriciously". Chief Justice JS Khehar, in a differing opinion, said that personal law could not be touched by a constitutional court of law. The opposing judgements also recommended that parliament legislate on the issue. However this is not binding and is up to parliament to take up. The Indian government, led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has supported ending the practice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought up the issue several times including in his Independence Day address on 15 August. Activists are hailing the decision as a major step forward for the rights of Muslim women.
There was not national anthem in 1947 when Pakistan was created. The words were written by famous poet Hafeez Jalandhari (1900 – 1982) in 1952, after being selected in a competition arranged by businessman A R Ghani, and prize money of Rs 10,000. Jalandharis poetry was selected from 723 competing songs. The anthem is written in the Persian language and it has only a single word “ka” in its “national language” Urdu, but the wording is understandable in both languages. Pakistan’s national anthem was composed by musician Ahmad G Chhagla in 1949. 21 mu-
sical instruments were used and 38 different tones with a playing time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. The anthem was recorded in 1954 by a number of singers and officially released on Radio Pakistan on 13th August 1954. The singers were Ahmad Rushdi, Shamim Bano, Kobab Jehan, Rasheeda Begum, Najam Ara, Naseema Shaheen, Zawar Hussain, Akhter Abbas, Ghulam Dastgir, Anwar Zaheer and Akhter Wassi. The official released version was sung by Jalandhari himself. Composer Ahmad G Chhagla died in 1953 before the anthem was officially adopted.
DM Global To Return With First UK HD Urdu Channel DM Global has exclusively confirmed that it will be launching the UK’s first Urdu HD channel on Sky later this year. The broadcaster, which sold off its standard definition EPG to Hum Masala this summer, will return sometime in September or October with the service name DM HD. Pakistani news broadcaster, Aaj TV will be DM HD’s media partner, with bulletins broadcast live from Pakistan. DM HD will also broadcast current affairs and dramas with emphasis on local
British news. DM Global was on-air for 14 years before it went off-air in June and during its tenure had its fair share of issues with media regulator, Ofcom. However, this time, DM HD will refrain from broadcasting live programme from its UK studios to ensure it stays on the right side of UK media regulations. It will therefore focus primarily on recorded bulletins and live material from Pakistan.

Shah Rukh Tops List Of Bollywood’s Highest-Paid Actors Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood’s highest earner, banking $38 million according to the new Forbes ‘Bollywood’s Highest-Paid Actors’ list. Endorsements remain a major source of income for Bollywood stars, with most banking more than an estimated $5 million from advertisements in our time frame. In second place is Salman Khan, who's Sultan, which was the second-highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2016. Akshay Kumar is in third place thanks to a busy schedule that saw him appear in five movies more than many of his fellow list members. Despite a giant hit at the global box office with Dangal, Aamir Khan ranks fourth due to the constraints of the June to June scoring period. His $12.5 million payday is comprised almost entirely of his cut of backend profits from the boxing drama, which is now India’s highest-grossing film. The movie continues to ticket well worldwide, meaning he’ll be earn-

ing more next year when the rest of his checks from the movie come in. Unlike most Bollywood actors, he does not endorse a plethora of products. Two women, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, make the top 10, despite a pay gap in Bollywood that sees actresses typically earn far less than actors. Diana, Princess Of Wales Diana, Princess of Wales is an iconic and contradictory figure whose appeal still endures 20 years after her death. She championed the disadvantaged, from those with Aids to the homeless, and was labelled "the people's Princess'' because of her common touch which could bridge social divides. But she also fought personal demons like her battle with bulimia, and appeared to be a lonely figure troubled by the media attention her looks and status attracted. Her death 20 years ago in a Paris car crash shocked the globe and saw unprecedented expressions of grief from thousands of ordinary people who felt a connection with Diana. On that day - August 31 1997 - then-prime minister Tony Blair summed up the mood of the nation when he paid tribute to her. He said: "People everywhere, not just here in Britain, kept faith with Princess Diana. They liked her, they loved her, they regarded her as one of the people. "She was the people's Princess and that is how she will stay, how she will remain in our hearts and our memories for ever.'' Diana's appeal began almost from the moment she appeared on the world stage as an awkward, shy teenager in the early 1980s, who was living in a London flat with her girlfriends and working in a kindergarten. Though hailed as a "commoner'', Lady Diana Spencer was a member of the aristocracy, born into a privileged family that had close connections with the Royal Family. Her fairytale wedding on July 29 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral was watched by a television audience of hundreds of millions and turned the self-dubbed "Sloane Ranger" into a world superstar. For more than a decade afterwards the Prince and Princess of Wales were regarded as the world's most romantic couple but, soon into their marriage, the cracks had begun to appear. Diana bore the Prince a son, William, in June 1982 and a few years later another, Harry, in September 1984.
But according to Andrew Morton's explosive book, Diana, Her True Story, which revealed the Princess' inner turmoil, Charles had wanted the second child to be a girl. His dismissive reaction to the arrival of a son and departure for a polo game the day after the birth was said to have marked the beginning of the end of the marriage. Morton wrote: "From that moment, as Diana told friends: 'Something inside me died'." Diana was haunted by her belief Charles's former lover Camilla Parker Bowles, now his wife, was back in his life and she was wracked by insecurities, doubting her worth as a member of the Royal Family. The marriage was effectively over by the end of the 1980s but the Prince and Princess kept up the public pretence until they separated in December 1992. That year Morton's book was published and it revealed Diana had suffered from bulimia and had attempted to take her own life a number of times, described as "cries for help", including throwing herself down a flight of stairs while pregnant with William. A few years later Charles made his own public admission telling broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby in a television documentary that he was unfaithful after his marriage had "irretrievably'' broken down, but did not identify his mistress. It was later alleged, but never confirmed, that it was Camilla. Diana made her own TV confession in November 1995 when she told the BBC's Panorama programme she had an affair with Life Guards officer Major James Hewitt. The royal couple divorced in August 1996. The Princess had her critics. She was dismissed by some as a "clothes horse'' for her love of designer dresses while others accused her of trying to emulate the reputation of Mother Teresa through her charity work. But she championed causes that, at the time, were not fashionable - publicly shaking hands with Aids patients, supporting homeless charities and taking William to meet rough
sleepers, and campaigning to outlaw landmines. The Paris car crash which killed Diana's lover Dodi Fayed and their chauffeur Henri Paul also ended the life of the 36-year-old princess, but she will forever remain the glamorous icon whose image is preserved for posterity.
