ONE OF A KIND ART ACCESORY ! MAH believes in the preservation of tradition. While many MAH products are made using the latest weaving and printing technologies from Europe they cannot reproduce scarves with the finish and texture of hand made scarves created using age-old techniques. The single ply silk used is a very fine and delicate fibre and requires special skills to weave it. Each scarf takes up to 3 months to produce. MAH and the women in a small town called Maheshwar, in Madhya Pradesh, India, who have weaved the scarves in this Limited Edition Collection on a handloom using traditional dying techniques tare proud to present to your these very special one of a kind art accessories. These are the following stages of weaving. Warping - A warp refers to the longitudinal yarns on a loom. And warping is the process where the yarns are prepared to be loaded on a loom in required length. Drafting - Heald shafts are the parts of the looms that group the warp yarns that are required to be lifted together to form a design. Drafting means passing the warp yarns through the heald eyes of the heald shaft. Denting - A reed is a comb like structure which is used to separate the threads and keep them in position and also used to push the weft yarn as it is being woven. Denting is a process where the warp yarns are passed through the reed, which determines the thickness and design of the fabric. Weaving - Weaving is the process where the weft yarn is inserted by lifting the heald shafts and then pushing the reed to secure the weft yarn to make the fabric. Dyeing Process Scouring is a treatment done to textiles to remove any impurities to facilitate better absorption of the dye using soapy solutions or enzymes. Mordanting - Mordants are required to fix the color on to the fabric. It can also be used as a means to influence the color. There are many mordants and each one will encourage a different shade from a particular dyestuff. Marigold flower steaming These flowers are collected from the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai as a part of the recycling project. After scouring, the scarves are treated with Alum mordant. The dried flower petals are then laid over the fabric and folded and tied to secure the petals inside. This is then steamed for 20 - 30 minutes according to the shade required. The longer the steaming, the deeper the color. Most of the time there are variations in the way the fabric takes the color and in the way the flowers release their color. These cannot be controlled, as with each crop of the flowers, there is a slight variation in the shade. The entire process of creating those beautiful scarves takes between 3-4 month in which up to 20 people are involved in the making of a single scarf. Irregularities in the stitch are not a defect but an integral part of the manual process and is not to be considered a defect.
