Public modes of transport (12%) The BMTC plies within the city while the KSRTC operates the buses within the state as well as outside. BMTC carries 3.7 million passengers a day. They issue different types of passes to cater to different needs of the society- monthly, weekly and daily pass is available. Metered auto-rickshaws are available for travel within the city. They provide cheap and quick connectivity. They are a part of the intermediate public transport like maxi cabs and city taxis and are required to feed the proposed Metro Rail.

Metered taxi services are also available in Bangalore, though they are a trifle expensive than autos.
75% of the private vehicles in the city are two-wheelers. Unfortunately there are no bicycle paths around the city.
The total percentage of private vehicles in the city is 88% out of which 75% are two-wheelers and 13% are cars.
There are very few pedestrian red-lights. and crossings. Over bridges and sub-ways are very few.

Bangalore is the IT capital of India. This has made the city cosmopolitan. The transport infrastructure is still trying to catch up. Future projects like the metro rail and a mass rapid transportation system is in progress.
Abundance of good educational institutions makes the city popular amongst students. There is a large number of out station students. BMTC provides a concession via a student pass.
A sudden economic boom has made the city a centre for increased commercial activity. Traders have found new business opportunities.
The city was also known as the pensioner’s paradise due to its favourable climate and beautiful surroundings. But now a lot of things have changed and the city has become more expensive.

Leaves his place at 5:30, on an empty road, it takes him about 20 minutes. When it looks like it could rain, he carries a raincoat. If it is raining, he takes a bus.

Varun finds a row of autos just outside SFS colony, where he lives. He shares an auto with other students to cut costs. He reaches college in 5 minutes or less.
After college, he goes to Malleshwaram for his theatre class by the college bus. He gets off at Mekhri Circle. It takes him about 40 minutes.
He takes an auto from there to his class. The traffic is at it’s peak, so it takes him about 20 minutes. It costs him Rs. 40.

After the class, he decided to meet up with four college friends on M.G. Road for dinner. He takes an auto- it takes him 25 minutes, and costs him Rs. 30.
It’s 10 pm when they’re done. Since no bus or auto is available, they share a cab back to SFS colony. It costs them Rs. 70 each.

Pallavi leaves at 7:15 am to avoid traffic. She reaches the Srishti Bus stop by either car or auto. It takes her 20 minutes to reach the bus stop, and 1 hour to get to college.
At 5:30 pm, she takes the college bus till M.G. Road, where she usually catches an auto rickshaw home. The evening traffic is terrible, specially along popular routes.
Going home takes longer. She avoids autoricshaws once it gets dark brcause it’s unsafe. She loves to cycle, whenever possible.
If college finishes early, she takes a local bus. She hates the fact that the buses are so infrequent.
Carrying work to and fro is difficult, and the long journey is tiring.

Open lorries on the highway are a threat. He fear being hit on them from behind. What happens in front of him, is within his control, he says.
He drives back in the evening. The highway is always in need of repairs and is difficult to drive on.

The highway is badly lit most of the time, and has no police supervision. At night, strong headlights coming from oncoming vehicles is very distracting.

The bottle neck just before Hebbal Flyover is where she has to face the brunt of bad road planning. No skywalks and people randomly crossing Bellary road at Kodigehalli gate makes the area scary to drive in.
The railway crossing at yelahanka is another slow down. She reaches colege at 9:15 am.

Pedestrians randomly crossing the road and the traffic entering the road at the junction slows down the traffic at Bellary Road, near Kodigehalli Gate.

As his occupation demands, he spends most of his mornings and afternoons driving the college bus around. He starts in the bus from college by about 6:30 am.
For Rajanna, driving is his job. He has to go through the same routes daily, inside as well as outside the main city. He also has to drive wherever the college asks him to take the bus. He is subjected to heavy Bangalore traffic everyday. He spends nearly 10-20 mins at traffic signals and sometimes hours in traffic jams.

He reaches back college from the last trip by 8 pm. He returns home on his motorcycle.
