Publisher Perspective… In Challenging and Uncertain Times We Must Remain Stadfast
By C. Sunny Martin
As business owners, servant leaders, and those of us in communities of color, we stand at the forefront of a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Entrepreneurs particularly those within the Black community, are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, the very essence that drives our local economy. We don’t just sell products or services; we manufacture hope and create opportunities in the marketplace that serve our community. Many of our small business enterprises have been nurtured into fruition, represents a dream not just for us, but for our families, our communities, and future generations to come. The weight of those dreams’ rests on our shoulders, reminding us that our perseverance can ignite change and uplift those who look to us for inspiration and guidance.
In the face of uncertainty, we must pull ourselves together and remain steadfast. History has shown us that resilience is woven into the fabric of our legacy. Our ancestors endured unimaginable challenges, yet they forged paths of progress that we continue to walk today. Now, it is our turn to lead with compassion, to build bridges instead of walls, and to dismantle the broken systems that hinder our collective growth. Let us be the vessels of nourishing joy and the exemplars of strength for the children who will inherit our dreams. Our Creator calls on us to rise, to collaborate, and to continue this vital work in our communities. So, let us ask ourselves: What are we waiting for? The time to act, to uplift, and to inspire is now. Together, we can create a future where every dream can flourish. Onward, we go—united in purpose, driving toward a brighter tomorrow.
One of my favorite quotes I think best represents our path forward:
“If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” -Fredrick Douglas

As purveyors of excellence and upliftment of People of Color, Mahogany Columbus shines a light on local entrepreneurs, community leaders, business owners, and wealth builders on the pages of this issue. For this editorial I need to speak directly to Black people minding their Black business. As Nazi’s feel comfortable spewing hate in our community, let us be on a mission to amplify the voices of Black entrepreneurs, celebrate their achievements, and open doors for growth and collaboration.
In Columbus, Ohio, community leadership and entrepreneurship play a pivotal role in uplifting communities, providing both economic empowerment and social cohesion. Small businesses and nonprofits are the backbone of local neighborhoods, delivering essential services, creating jobs, and building community identity. Black-owned businesses represent resilience, innovation, and economic selfsufficiency.
Black entrepreneurs have navigated economic systems built to keep us disenfranchised. Even with the odds stacked against us, resilient business owners have strategically pushed through systemic racism and adversity and found ways to serve our community while building the economy.
Service in business and community leadership is at the heart of what makes a community truly thrive. It’s not about money or checking boxes; it’s about making a difference in the lives of others. For those of us from marginalized communities, that difference is personal. We know what it’s like to face barriers that seem insurmountable. So, when we step into leadership roles—whether in business or community service—we bring with us a special understanding of what it means to give back, to lift others as we rise. It’s that empathy, that shared experience, that shapes the way we lead, and it’s what makes our efforts so powerful. We’re not just serving because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s in our bones.
A Note from Our Editor-In-Chief
By W. Kay Wilson
In business, service means seeing the potential in others, and creating opportunities for people who are often overlooked. When entrepreneurs of Color build businesses, they’re not just creating a product—they’re creating a space where people can grow, where they can find jobs, mentorship, and a sense of hope. Their success becomes the community’s success.
This issue of Mahogany features leaders who didn’t just talk about change; they made it happen. I encourage you to look deeper at serving others as charity; but about empowerment, giving people the tools they need to succeed, and elevating their names and skills in rooms they may not be in. Because some people are going to feel emboldened to shut those doors in the name of taking America back rather than bringing America forward. Let’s be about the business of shining and serving, because when we work together with this kind of purpose, we create a Columbus where everyone has the chance to grow.

Think all steakhouses are the same? Cut 132 dares to be different with their modern spin on everything from steaks to sides, cocktails to dessert. Cut132 honors the great tradition of American steakhouses, but strips away the stuffiness and elevates every cut, every bite, every sip.
Upon entering Cut132 you are submersed in a luxurious, yet comfortable affair. The contemporary and lively design gives off an indulgent allure.
Along the edge of the menu at Cut132 you will find a quote from the great, Anthony Bourdain, “I’m aware of this practice. It’s extremely anti-social and against all standards of decency. So, I think we should do it.”
What does that quote mean to Cut132? It means they strive to push boundaries, boldly break the mold, and pioneer a new way to experience a steakhouse.

If you are a fan of a Dirty Martini, then you must order “The Dirty Dirty”, made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, more Tito’s Handmade vodka, almost no dry vermouth, olive brine and olives. Made with maple syrup, cocktail bitters, applewood smoke and their very own Knob Creek Cut132 Select Single Barrel Bourbon. As you round out your meal at Cut132 don’t forget to have your table enjoy a round Bumps & Bubbles, a bump of Osteria Caviar with a sip of icy champagne, or have you ever heard of a Cowboy Luge? Fashion Week Columbus Celebrates 15 Years of Style, Inclusivity, and Community Impact
By Keira Chatman
For the past 15 years, Fashion Week Columbus has stood as a beacon of creativity, inclusion, and opportunity in the heart of Ohio’s capital. This flagship program of the Columbus Fashion Council has grown to become a nationally recognized event, showcasing the city’s vibrant fashion scene while amplifying the voices of emerging designers, models, and creatives.
Columbus, the third-largest city for fashion designers in the United States, takes pride in its role as a hub for talent and innovation. Fashion Week Columbus provides a platform for the entire fashion ecosystem, from designers and photographers to makeup artists and event producers, through six dynamic days of events. This year’s edition reflected a powerful commitment to diversity and inclusion,
with 80% of the models identifying as Black or multi-racial and 60% of the featured designers coming from Black communities.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Keira Chatman, who has served in her role for 1.5 years, Fashion Week Columbus has expanded its vision. Chatman introduced new programming, including the Nordstrom Beauty Showcase, which brought a fresh focus on beauty trends and products, and the expanded Curve Show, emphasizing body positivity. This year’s Curve Runway Show was historic, featuring over 50 curvy models—more than all of New York Fashion Week combined. These initiatives not only reflect the Council’s dedication to inclusivity, but also redefine beauty standards within the fashion industry.
The week culminated in a vibrant finale headlined by BruceGlen, the acclaimed designer duo known for their bold, colorful designs. Their show was a fitting conclusion to a week that celebrated creativity, community, and resilience. Many of the designers and models showcased at Fashion Week Columbus have gone on to grace the runways of New York, London, and Paris Fashion Weeks, highlighting the city’s role as a springboard for global success.
Beyond the glitz and glamour, Fashion Week Columbus has made a tangible impact on the local community. Over the years, the program has awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships to aspiring fashion design students at institutions like CCAD and Hocking College. These scholarships not only nurture future talent but also strengthen Columbus’s position as a fashion capital.
The event’s influence extends to supporting local entrepreneurs and small businesses. By spotlighting designers, models, and industry professionals, Fashion Week Columbus fuels economic growth and fosters a sense of pride in the city’s creative community. This year’s success reaffirms that Columbus is not just a city of designers—it’s a city of dreams, determination, and diversity.
As Fashion Week Columbus looks to the future, it continues to set the standard for innovation and inclusivity in the fashion industry. With leaders like Keira Chatman at the helm, the Columbus Fashion Council is poised to inspire even greater achievements in the years to come.

Getting Funding to Start or Grow Your Business
Capital is vital to any business, whether it’s just getting started or looking to grow. How you fund your business can have a huge impact on your operations and ability to take advantage of new opportunities.
The good news is that there are many choices for business owners seeking funding today. The type of funding that’s right for your small business depends on several factors, including what you need the money for, what type of credit or business history you have, and your willingness to take on debt.
In general terms, there are three primary sources of funding: self-funding, investors, and loans. Each has its pros and cons. With self-funding, business owners tap their own financial resources, i.e., personal savings and retirement accounts, and may ask for help from family and friends.
This option allows owners to maintain full control over their businesses. However, it may be difficult to raise enough money to keep the business growing with these limited sources. In addition, if the business doesn’t succeed, the owner may be left without a financial cushion.
Some businesses, especially those that promise high-growth opportunities, may be able to attract outside investors. This option can allow for the fastest accumulation of needed capital. But it comes with a downside, namely that the owner often must give up some control of the business by allowing investors to have a say in operations and major financial decisions.
Many owners apply for loans to fund their businesses. With a loan, you can keep control of your business without giving up hard-earned savings or retirement funds. There are many types of loans available for small business owners, so pinpointing the best option for your unique circumstances is important.
Huntington has helped many small business owners identify funding options for their businesses. One of these options is called Huntington Lift Local Business®, which Huntington launched in 2020 to support minority-, women- and veteran-owned small businesses.
Lift Local Business was designed to support small businesses throughout the business life cycle—from start-up to expansion. The program offers loans, business planning support and other services to help small business owners achieve their goals. The educational component of Lift Local is delivered through Operation HOPE. Operation HOPE offers an online self-guided course, that allows business owners to work at their own pace to build a business plan and financial projections.
Under the Lift Local program, businesses can secure Small Business Administration (SBA)-guaranteed loans for as little as $1,000 and up to $150,000. The Huntington Lift Local Business features include:
• Zero origination fees
• SBA fees paid by Huntington#
• Lower credit score requirements
• Free financial education courses delivered in partnership with Operation HOPE
• Business checking account with 24-Hour Grace® overdraft and return fee relief†, and monthly service fee waived for 36 months
• Flexible, longer-term repayment options.
Since launching Lift Local Business, Huntington has funded more than $33.5 million to support Black-owned businesses through the program. According to White House data, Black business ownership is growing at the fastest pace in 30 years, and the share of Black households owning a business doubled between 2019 and 2022. To keep up with this fast-paced growth, Huntington expanded its Lift Local Business team to include a Black-owned Business Engagement Director who is responsible for working with Black-owned businesses in several markets including Columbus.
Lift Local Business is a key component of Huntington’s $40 Billion Strategic Community Plan, which focuses on driving economic inclusion through access to capital, affordable housing and homeownership, and community lending and investment. With the Strategic Community Plan announced in June 2021, Huntington increased the Lift Local Business program investment from $25 million (first announced in 2020) to $100 million over the next five years.
When it comes to funding your business, exploring all your options is key to finding the best funding sources for your business operating needs—whether starting up or planning to grow. Given the available options, you can take steps to secure the capital you need to help your business thrive.

TechR2 is a revolutionary technology firm with numerous sites across the world that focuses on erasing vital data on end-point storage devices to guarantee compliance with all global data privacy laws and multiple ISO industry standards.
Sepp immigrated to the United States from Iran when he was 18 years old in search of a better education. Shortly after his arrival, the Iranian political revolution altered the trajectory of his life. With unrest emerging in his native country, Sepp asked for refuge, was given asylum, and was eventually awarded citizenship in the United States. Sepp immediately found that he had to work hard to put himself through school while juggling multiple full-time jobs because he had no financial assistance from his family in Iran. This useful experience helped him in his future undertakings.
Sepp’s schooling, along with his expertise in sales and marketing for a technology company, prompted him to launch his own company in 1989. Sepp anticipated that as data dissemination and processing grew, the notion of data security would become a critical component of technological growth.
“My vision was always clear that data security would be essential and that there was a gaping hole in the industry that continued to get bigger and bigger. This was the foundation of how TechR2 was born—I knew there was a crucial necessity – so we began building,” he explains.
This insight has resulted in TechR2’s innovative approach to data security. TechR2 does not adhere to or support the adage “if it is not broken, don’t fix it.” Fortunately, risk assessments are one of TechR2’s core service offerings, allowing the company to identify clients’ security flaws and improve their processes. This is an excellent opportunity for TechR2 to advise, counsel, and safeguard customer vulnerabilities. They provide a bespoke cybersecurity framework adapted to customer needs based on industry, activity, and size; this necessitates an innovative and proactive culture. “Our engineering department is on pace for 10 patents this year alone. Along with other stringent ISO accreditations, we are proud to be International Standards Organization (ISO) 31000 certified, allowing us to conduct professional assessments for data security across the U.S. and the world. As reported by the U.S. Inspector General (2019 and 2020), organizations continue to utilize non-compliant practices and uncertified vendors because organizations are still learning how to protect client healthcare, financial, and personal data,” says Mr. Rajaie.
The proprietary TechR2 Tear-A-Byte® technology from the firm overcomes data security gaps in existing, non-compliant procedures. Data security breaches, failed data destruction processes, and e-waste failures are reported every day across the United States. TechR2 has been prepared for this storm and has been in constant development in response to industry expectations. They’ve developed from a tiny enterprise as a local technology recycler to a global leader in IT Asset Destruction. They are pushing the edge even further by re-inventing the ITAD sector with Data Destruction as a Service (DDaaS).
The Legacy of Bishop La Fayette Scales
By Alisha Martin
Bishop La Fayette Scales is the distinguished founding pastor of Rhema Christian Center on Agler Road in Columbus, Ohio. Since 1982, he has faithfully served as the lead pastor, guiding the congregation with unwavering dedication. His preaching journey began in 1973, marking over 51 years of ministry in our city. Bishop Scales has expanded his ministry globally, preaching in 30 nations across six continents since 1988. He and his beloved wife, Theresa Scales, have celebrated over 50 years of marriage since June 15, 1973, exemplifying a partnership rooted in love and faith. He’s an honorable man of God who has had a remarkable impact in ministry, this community, and the hearts of many.
From a young age, LaFayette Scales aspired to be a preacher. This dream amused his peers but was deeply anchored in his heartfelt desire to see people give their lives to Jesus Christ. His pastoral journey was profoundly influenced by Rev. Phale D. Hale, a distinguished Morehouse Seminary graduate and close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Growing up, Scales was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church, located in a Columbus community where one of the first housing projects was situated. During that time, Dr. Hale then decided to run for the 63rd House District to change public policy and impact the community. He once posed the poignant question, “How can we have a successful church in a failing community?” This question instilled a lifelong dedication in Scales and shaped his perspective as a community servant leader.
Bishop Scales’ ministry began with teaching Sunday School, where his engaging and heartfelt approach grew the ministry. Some of these young minds later blossomed into bishops and pastors, a testament to his nurturing influence. After six years of preaching, he initiated a Bible study in a home on Brocton Court in Brittany Hills, alongside his dear friend, Bill Dodson.
As the gathering flourished, Scales felt a divine prompting to establish a church. In 1982, Rhema Christian Center was born, starting with seven devoted members from that Friday night Bible study. The name “Rhema,” a Greek term signifying “the spoken word,” reflects Scales’ conviction in the transformative power of preaching.
Bishop Scales is unwavering in his commitment to accountability and integrity in leadership. By becoming an employee of the church, he instituted safeguards to ensure the institution’s sanctity. He developed a governance model that upholds personal integrity, recognizing his accountability to God, family, the church community, and the board of directors. Scales is resolute in living the principles he preaches, affirming, “I don’t teach what I don’t live,” ensuring his actions never impede others’ faith journey.
When asked about his proudest accomplishments, Bishop Scales was quick to highlight the work of others within his ministry rather than his own. Under his visionary leadership, Rhema Christian Center has been instrumental in planting six other church ministries, beginning with Jonathan Alvarado’s church in Atlanta, Georgia. This focus on church planting, especially during the 1990’s, a period marked by the rise of megachurchesdemonstrates Scales’ commitment to sowing seeds in the broader community. He often reflects on the words from the Second Epistle of John: “I have no greater joy than to know my children walk in truth.” Witnessing individuals embrace and live out God’s truth brings him immense joy. Rhema’s diverse ministries over the years, encompassing dance, puppetry, and drama, and more have actively engaged young people, offering them various avenues to serve and worship.
Bishop Scales prioritizes his personal relationship with God, followed by his commitments to his wife, children, work, and ministry, aligning with the guidance in 1 Timothy 3. His passion for his work is evident, yet he maintained balance by meticulously scheduling family time, vacations, and attending his children’s activities when they were young, modeling the importance of family. He emphasizes, “When your passion and profession become the same, nobody has to wake you up to go to work.” When discussing his legacy, Bishop Scales distinguishes between inheritance, what one leaves behind and legacy, who one leaves behind. His legacy encompasses influential leaders across various sectors, including community service, media, government, education, and beyond. He envisions his life’s work encapsulated in forthcoming books, aiming to document 42 years of ministry, stating, “My legacy is the people, the leaders, and the books I will write.”
He believes that a lasting church must foster a passion for God to transform lives, “If there is no God factor, lives will not be transformed.” He believes the church should emphasize the humanitarian teachings of Matthew 25:35, advocating for actions that demonstrate love for your neighbor, grounded in biblical principles.
Recently, Bishop La Fayette Scales announced his succession, naming Minister Tony Ransom as the future leader of Rhema Christian Center. We are thankful to Bishop La Fayette Scales for his decades of commitment and dedication to the Columbus community and beyond. Rhema Christian Center is like no other place on earth!

Dureti (Mimi) Tadesse is the Founder and CEO of Cawwaaqee Guuttatta Women’s Empowerment, a Christian faith-based, non-profit organization which she founded in 2012. The charity, named after her grandmother, provides hope and support by donating heifer cows and providing business development training to thousands of women in Mimi’s homeland, the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
Women of Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest region, face sexual assault, violence, kidnapping, subjugation, and economic disenfranchisement. Mimi’s own grandmother, Cawwaaqee, was married against her will. She did not have the legal right to stand up for herself, but her strength, determination and hard work brought light and hope into her children’s and her grandchildren’s lives. Mimi, after experiencing many such injustices also herself, decided something must be done for the women of her home country.
CGWE was developed leveraging the foundation of Dabaree, a traditional economic practice of the region based upon principles of reciprocity. Without intervention, women are unable to earn a sustainable, living wage, giving way to an endless and hopeless intergenerational cycle of abuse, poverty, and powerlessness. CGWE’s mission is to create economic selfsufficiency for women, children, and entire villages in the region, thereby saving their very lives and futures.
When women and their families are granted a heifer cow, their lives change dramatically. After the beneficiary family picks out their healthy heifer cow, they receive animal caretaking instruction, along with continued business development training.
• With a cow, women can more safely work near their homes and care for their younger children.
• Milk can feed the family and be sold in local markets, allowing older children to attend school rather than work.
• The first-born heifer calf from their donated cow is granted to another needy family, allowing beneficiaries to become donors!
• Greater economic and personal security increases the beneficiary’s self-esteem as they invest in their families and villages and improve the quality of life for all.
Support from generous individuals and community partners allows CGWE to also work with local Oromian leaders to impact entire villages by providing the following:
• Critical health, hygiene, and sanitation education and supplies
• Advocacy against female genital mutilation
• Clean water wells
• Veterinary clinics
• Support for local schools
• Basic business skills training.
Mimi, through her continued work with CGWE will continue to strive to break intergenerational cycles of violence and economic disempowerment for women and children in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.

BALANCING FAMILY, EDUCATION, AND MUSIC WITH PURPOSE AND PASSION
By Anthony King, M.Ed.
Stephen King, also known as DJ Mr. King, is a man of many roles. As an Assistant Principal at Gahanna Lincoln High School, a devoted father, a community leader, and a prominent DJ in Columbus, Ohio, his days are nothing short of packed.
His daily schedule is a testament to his work ethic and versatility. His mornings start early, waking at 5:30 AM for a run before getting his children ready for school. After dropping them off, he heads to Gahanna Lincoln High School, where his leadership is guided by the school’s PRIDE acronym: Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence. As an assistant principal, Steve connects with students and staff and ensures a smooth operation throughout the school day. By 3:45 PM, he’s supervising dismissal, ensuring students are safely on their way.
DJ Mr. King then heads to the studio, preparing for his mix and getting ready for interviews. During our time together, he interviewed the 2025 Ohio State Teacher of the Year. Afterward, he’s off to support his son at his basketball scrimmage before finally heading home to spend time with his wife and kids. Even with a packed schedule, he finds time for a late-night run to recharge.
His music career began at 16, sparked by a love for records and mixtapes
from Akron’s 2 Live Music store. From being the neighborhood go-to for new tracks to hosting college parties, he honed his craft and built his brand. In the early 2010s, his persistence paid off when he landed a spot at Power 107.5, starting with overnight mixes before progressing to his own night show. Today, DJ Mr. King is a household name in Columbus radio, celebrated for his high-energy presence and ability to make listeners feel good.
For DJ Mr. King, being a DJ is more than playing music. It’s about community. He values the connections he makes with everyday people over celebrity encounters, and he believes in using his platform to uplift and break down barriers in the gatekeeping music industry. His work extends beyond the airwaves through mentorship, where he helps aspiring DJs and radio personalities build their skills and brands.
When asked how he manages such a dynamic life, DJ Mr. King is quick to credit his family. His wife and children are his foundation, providing stability and support. “If your house isn’t solid, none of this works,” he says.
Whether in the classroom, the studio, or at home, DJ Mr. King lives by a philosophy of balance, purpose, and authenticity, leaving a positive impact on those around him.

Insurance Agency Owner Shares Her Spiritual Journey…
My spiritual journey started when my Godfearing Grandmother planted the seed of faith in my heart at the tender age of 5 years old. At that exact moment, I entered the transfer portal into the Kingdom of God and it became legal that God could now participate in a partnership with her and water that seed. Throughout my childhood, that seed started to take root and eventually I started to see the harvest manifesting in my adulthood. I came to a crossroad in my life where I had to be fully persuaded of what heaven says and trust God. I knew my next move had to be my best move or else I could miss out on the opportunity to join the partnership with God and my grandmother. By the grace of God, I willfully accepted the process of spiritual pruning. He revealed that in this acceptance, my current situation was not going to be my “final” destination and that he was going to be eliminating the distractions in my life so that he could elevate and exalt his purpose for my life.
Through revelation, God disclosed that he is in the “people” business and that he needed to expand my insurance knowledge, specifically sales in the marketplace, so I could become the person of influence he intended for me to be. Can I be fully honest and transparent with you? The thought of me operating in a sales environment made me cringe. I was not in agreement with God about his will for my life and jokingly responded back with “I can’t sell water to a well Lord!”. I set myself up with the perfect transition to what he revealed to me next. He provoked my mind from that cringy word “sales” to relationship building and through that process, I would be introducing his Kingdom and spreading the good news of his “well” of living water that never runs dry.
My faith journey led me to a very significant date that has completely changed my life. On November 9th, 2020, I stepped out in faith and allowed God to step in, take over and maximize my insurance career. By God’s grace and glory, I am currently flourishing as a relationship builder operating and owning a full-service insurance

Your Health Roots: The Power of Family History
As leaders in our community, we understand the importance of building strong foundations. But did you know that your health has a foundation too? It’s called your family health history. Knowing your family’s medical history is a powerful tool that can help prevent diseases and promote better health for you and your loved ones.
Chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease often run in families. For African Americans, who face higher risks for these illnesses, understanding our health roots is even more critical. By learning your family’s health story, you can work with your clinician to take proactive steps to protect your future.
Here are five simple tips for gathering and
By Christopher Brown MD, MPH, FACP
recording your family health history:
1. Start the Conversation: Talk to your relatives during gatherings or over the phone. Ask about common illnesses, causes of death, and ages when family members were diagnosed.
2. Take Notes: Write down what you learn or use a family health history tool like My Family Health Portrait, a free online resource.
3. Ask Specific Questions: Inquire about conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and any rare disorders. Also, note lifestyle habits like smoking or exercise.
4. Update Your Records Regularly: Family health histories evolve as new generations are born and relatives’ age. Keep your records current.
5. Share with Your Clinician: Your primary care clinician can use your history to recommend screenings, lifestyle changes, or preventive treatments tailored to your needs.
Taking charge of your health history isn’t just about you—it’s a gift to your family and community. It’s a way to inspire others to break cycles of illness and embrace a healthier future.
This holiday season make a commitment to uncover your health story. Reach out to your primary care clinician to discuss your findings To learn more about primary care check our “Ready to Take Charge of Your Health? A Guide to Primary Care available at Amazon.

Voters Are Talking. Will Democrats Listen?
November’s election results were a disaster for the Democratic Party.
Kamala Harris lost the popular vote by over two million and came up short in every single swing state, resulting in eighty-six fewer electoral college votes than Donald Trump. Pundits are offering competing explanations of what went wrong, but one thing is clear: voters want change.
Kamala Harris’s path to the White House was always going to be tough. She took over for Joe Biden, whose historically low approval ratings have been under 40% since 2022 when inflation started spiking. His late decision to step down also meant she had just over 100 days to assume the top of the ticket and run a campaign. And, of course, any victory would mean convincing a country increasingly polarized around issues of diversity generally, and gender and race in particular, that it was time to elect the first Black and South-Asian woman president. Ending a postmortem analysis with these intrinsic barriers, however, overlooks other important takeaways.
Based on exit polls, the economy was key for voters in the 2024 presidential election, with nearly half citing the economy as their top issue. The campaigns knew this--both Harris and Trump included economic messages in their slew of final campaign ads to sway swing voters. Trump had a much lower bar to clear. As a challenger and former president from pre-inflation times, he could blame high prices on Kamala and promise a return to a cheaper past. Kamala had to stake out a credible vision of how she was going to do what the current administration couldn’t to lower prices. She had flashes of doing this during the campaign by promising to take on Big Pharma, Big Oil, and Big Grocery for jacking up prices. Instead, her economic ads in the closing days critiqued Trump’s tariff proposals (ineffectively, in
By Morgan Harper
my opinion) and promised tax cuts for the middle class, a policy that has been part of the Democratic platform my entire life.
To rebuild, the party should be honest that this closing, milquetoast economic message did not drive enough turnout to win. While the press tends to focus on swing voters, lower turnout in center city Black neighborhoods and other parts of the Democratic base across the country deserves just as much attention, including locally here in Franklin County where turnout was the lowest since 2004! No one right now has a silver bullet solution about how to regain the White House in 2028 and make Ohio competitive again, but voters are making it clear they are not buying the change Democrats are selling. Maintaining the status quo is not an option.
The Beat on the Columbus Real Estate Market
As 2024 ends, the Central Ohio real estate market has proven resilient amid changing economic conditions. The region has maintained its appeal to buyers and investors alike, thanks to strong job growth, population influx, and infrastructure developments. In 2024, Central Ohio continued to experience a competitive housing market, although with signs of stabilization.
2024 Market Summary
The real estate market in Central Ohio remained active throughout 2024, despite higher interest rates and persistent inflationary pressures. Home prices grew steadily, albeit at a slower pace compared to the rapid increases of the previous two years. The average home price in Franklin County hovered around $330,000, reflecting a modest 4-5% growth from 2023. Buyers faced less frantic competition than in previous years, leading to slightly longer “days on market”, averaging 25-30 days.
Inventory levels improved, but housing supply remained below demand, contributing to the
By Rebecca Collins, RebeccaCollins.e-Merge.com
ongoing price growth. Notably, new construction homes, especially in suburban areas like Dublin, New Albany, and Grove City, attracted considerable interest. These areas experienced a boom in spec homes and custom builds, catering to the growing demand for larger homes with modern amenities.
Central Ohio’s economy—bolstered by significant investments in tech, healthcare, and education— helped sustain demand. First-time homebuyers were impacted the most by higher rates, while move-up buyers and investors continued to find opportunities.
2025 Market Forecast
Looking ahead to 2025, the Central Ohio real estate market is poised for continued stability with a potential shift toward buyer-friendly conditions. As inflation is expected to ease and interest rates potentially decrease, the market will likely see renewed activity in the first half of the year.
Home Prices:
While price growth is expected to continue, it will likely be more modest, with forecasts suggesting a 3-4% rise in home values. This steadier growth should help alleviate concerns about affordability, making it easier for buyers to enter the market. Some neighborhoods within the urban core of Columbus may see slower growth, while suburban and exurban areas, where new developments are concentrated, could experience more significant appreciation.
Inventory:
2025 could finally be the year when inventory levels begin to balance out. Builders are expected to continue increasing production, especially in areas like Delaware County and Hilliard, where demand for new construction remains strong. This increase in housing supply should provide more options for buyers and reduce the intense bidding wars that characterized the market in recent years.
In summary, 2024 has demonstrated the strength and resilience of Central Ohio’s real estate market, and 2025 promises to offer a more balanced environment with opportunities for both buyers and sellers. As economic factors shift, Central Ohio’s appeal remains unwavering, making it a region to watch in the coming year.
