Assignment Urban Design Intervention

Background: • We have understood what urban spaces are and elements that defines them to be urban – public spaces. The nature and character of these spaces governs the use of this space. The physical form and scale of these spaces as well as the peripheral land use and movement pattern are responsible for active life in and around that particular urban space. • Any such urban space is a product of evolution over time and hence is dynamic in nature. It will keep on transforming with time to adapt to changes in social structure, lifestyle. • For e.g. – College road has transformed from being a quiet institutional street to a busy commercial road after the introduction of Big Bazaar mall and many others that followed.
Specification: • Identify an urban space in Nasik city or any other city of your acquaintance. It could be from any category from streets, nodes, chowks, to markets spaces, community space water front spaces, and open space in front of a religious, institutional or other landmark building. • Understand the nature of the space through activity mapping at different time of the day, on different days of week, and on any particular festivals/events along with seasonal changes if any. Identifying and defining user groups will facilitate activity mapping. • Analyze the nature of activities and their intensity through land use documentation around the urban space.
• Analyze the current condition of that urban space through photographic documentation.
Specification: • Identify any issues or concerns with that urban space in terms of its active fronts, safety, lighting conditions, traffic, visual appeal, cleanliness, land use coordination. Support your observations with photographs, sketches and on site survey data. • Study the transformation the space has undergone over the years from its existence, its purpose and evolution over time to gauge its future prospects. • Suggest interventions for addressing the identified issues and uplifting the situation of the urban space. The interventions may be at design level, technical issues or administrative and managerial. It is recommended to suggest interventions in phases of implementation to study the effect and reaction of people to the suggested changes.

Problem at Junction : Chopda Lawns (1) and Pramod Mahajan Garden (2) Spill over area superimpose each other. Solution : • Create Linearity in the spillover area using Bollards + curb • Place Guard Rail to segregate two activities.

SLOPE DIRECTION Problem at Junction : Higher slope degree due to burying an existing canal.
Solution : • Installing Signage posts indicating a slope + its degree • Suggesting the crowd through signage that preference be given to upward traffic.

A
Problem at Junction : Dividers are poorly assisting the traffic at the junction. Solution :
B
• Decrease divider length at A to allow an early U- turn for upward traffic. (This reduces traffic at junction ) •
Divider U–Turn
Inserting a small divider at B to avoiding crossing over of upward and downward traffic paths.
