Maori heritage While Pakeha (European) occupation of the area goes back some 170 years, Maori have occupied what they called Puhinui for a millennium.
Kia ora welcome Whether you want to ride, run, paddle or walk, the Mahurangi district is the perfect place to relax and recharge the batteries. We’re not known as “Auckland’s playground” for nothing! Our region stretches from Puhoi north to the Brynderwyns, and coast to coast from the Kaipara Harbour on the west to the Hauraki Gulf on the east. It’s a district blessed with more than its fair share of natural beauty – white sandy surf beaches, sheltered
harbours, ancient stands of native bush, rivers, waterfalls, lakes and regional parks – we have it all. Dispersed amongst nature’s bounty are towns and villages, each with their own story to tell and plenty of local entrepreneurs to offer hospitality. You’re on ‘holiday time’ now so go with the flow and keep this guide to the Mahurangi region handy because you don’t want to miss all that this wonderful area has to offer.
Te Kawerau is the earliest remembered tangata whenua (people of the land) of the Mahurangi river. These people descended from the Ngati Awa and trace their roots back to the ancient peoples of the early canoe Moekakara said to have landed on Goat Island. Their struggle to survive the pressures of competing tribes, the Ngati Whatua from inland, the Nga Puhi from the north and the Ngati Paoa, from the islands of the Gulf, are well documented. Today Maori culture is evidenced by the impressive carved pou whenua (sacred carved poles) which stand guard over modern holiday homes bordering the beautiful Omaha Bay and at the Te Kiri Marae (gathering place), above Leigh Harbour, named for the chief who ruled the district at the time of European settlement in the 1830s. Puhoi • Waiwera
bohemian settlement It’s hard to avoid the word ‘quaint’ when describing Puhoi. Although subdivision is creeping in, the village retains a rural character dominated by the grand old Puhoi Hotel, built around 1900.
As you enter the village you pass a wooden shrine, erected in 1953 as part of Puhoi’s 90th celebrations. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a little further on the left. Opened in 1881, it has 22 stained glass windows and the altar painting is an exact copy of the one in a church in Bohemia, where the first Puhoi settlers emigrated from in 1863.
“On the scenic coastal route, south of Puhoi, you’ll find Wenderholm Regional Park, the historic Couldrey House and the naturally hot mineral pools of Waiwera.”

SUMMER HARVEST
with Lauraine Jacobs Every weekend of the summer you will find me returning from the local farmers market and the vegetable stands around the Omaha flats with armfuls of fresh spicy basil and some bright red peppers. We’re lucky to have such a great district for the cultivation of herbs, fruits and vegetables. Naturally, basil goes beautifully with local tomatoes in season, but this delightful pungent summer herb is also great with peppers. A word of caution here – many people, like me, find green peppers are hard to digest. Of course, as they are not ripe! Leave them on the vine and they will turn red or yellow when they’re ripe and ready to eat. Here’s one of my favourite basil and pepper recipes. It’s easy to prepare and will be a favourite on a warm summer evening when accompanied with one of the delicious pinot gris wines grown in our district.

Red pepper & basil pesto linguine with chicken
Pesto recipe
Serves 6
• 3 ripe red peppers • 4 tbsps extra virgin olive oil • 400g spaghetti or linguine • 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped • ½ cup pesto (see side bar) • Handful of fresh basil leaves For the chicken: • 6 large boned chicken thighs • 2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil • Salt & freshly ground black pepper • 1 tsp smoked paprika
To prepare the linguine: Cut the peppers into strips, discarding the core and seeds and put into a frying pan with 2 tablespoons of the oil. Fry over gentle heat until the peppers are soft and tender. Keep aside. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the linguine. Cook until tender (about 12 minutes) then drain well. Place in a serving bowl and toss the remaining olive oil and the pesto through. Add the pepper strips and the tomatoes. To prepare the chicken: Heat a grill plate. Toss the chicken with the olive oil, salt, pepper and paprika to coat well. Place on the grill and cook on each side for about 7-8 minutes until golden and tender. To serve, divide the pasta between six plates, and add a chicken breast and freshly torn basil leaves on top of each serving.
10 cups basil leaves, packed • 1½ cups good quality extra virgin olive oil • 1 cup toasted pine nuts • 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano • 5 to 6 cloves garlic • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Place the first five ingredients in the food processor and pulse until a coarse puree forms. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Freeze in ice cube trays or refrigerate in screw top jars until needed. Makes 4-5 cups, but can be scaled up or down.

People new to the wine tasting experience can take heart from the advice of seasoned Matakana winegrowers, Robin and Marion Ransom. They say there is no such thing as one right answer when it comes to wine tasting. “Everyone has their own history of tastes and memories, which will influence how they experience a wine so don’t be bullied in to accepting someone else’s opinion.”
It’s best to approach a tasting with a clean palate and an open mind. Hold back from making a snap judgement on whether or not you like the wine, and use a little imagination instead. All wines are made to be appreciated differently. For instance, Matakana has a huge range of rosé wines, which are ideal for summer barbecues and picnics. Pairing cheese and wine takes a little more care. Marion says there’s a lot of similarities between wine and cheese making, and the style of wine and the way it’s been made should be considered when choosing a cheese to serve with it. See suggestions next page. The Ransoms say that wine is an expression of the place and environment where it’s grown, but at the end of the day, it’s there to be savoured and enjoyed.
“Wine tasting is fun and the more effort you put in to understanding the wine, the more satisfying your experience will be.” For a memorable wine & food experience in peaceful surroundings.

TOTARA HOUSE The Kauri Museum in Matakohe recently took possession of the historic Totara House that belonged to the pioneering Smith family. Mavis Smith, who passed away in February 2013, aged 102 years, was born in the house and spent her whole life there. She was also a founding member of the museum and her cousin Lockwood Smith is currently NZ’s High Commissioner in London. The house was built in 1896 of kauri,
which was milled at the family’s timber mill in Matakohe. The bequest also included the original contents, which depict the story of one Albertland family over more than a century. The heritage garden includes a heritage rose collection. Although the house is open by appointment only, it is expected to become a popular destination for garden clubs, heritage groups and car clubs.

HORSE RIDING WARKWORTH
Take a peek... Curiosity shops are back in style and the Mahurangi district has plenty to choose from. Part-retail and part-museum, the shops are a magnet for anyone who likes a little nostalgia. Rummage, which is on the Matakana Collectables Trail, is owned by Yvonne Clifton who says antique and collectable stores were hit hard when trading on the internet first became popular. But as the novelty of online shopping has worn off, there’s been renewed interest from customers who like to take their time to browse and reminisce. “Pottery and china collectors often come looking for specific pieces, but most customers are happier just exploring the shops to see what they can discover. “We get to hear lots of great stories, prompted by items they find.”

Younger customers are interested in anything retro which they can use and/or display. Old film cameras, stereo and cassette players, and vinyl records are particularly popular. Crown Lynn pottery, Hummel figurines and Murano glassware are staple favourites, and there is a keen market for Air New Zealand memorabilia. There’s a different vibe in the collectable shops, Yvonne says. They’re an antidote to the shopping mall and to get the best out of the experience, you have to slow down and be open to being surprised and inspired.

Matakana It’s not just the Saturday morning Farmers Market that brings visitors flocking to Matakana these days. The village has become a favourite haunt for anyone looking for a relaxing hour or two that’s “off the beaten track”. With a range of upmarket curio and retail shops, galleries, boutique cinemas, pubs and cafes, and various markets, it’s not surprising that its reputation is spreading.
The village information office, in the cinema foyer, is the place to find out all that there is to see and do in the surrounding area. Rain or shine all tastes are catered for, with even more to choose from during summer when various venues stage special concerts and events. If you want to ditch the car for an afternoon, the six-kilometre pathway between Matakana, Omaha and Point Wells is suitable for bikes and walkers with some stunning scenery along the way.
Across the road from the Farmers Market there’s a fashion designer’s store. It’s mine, it’s Leslie Herbert, it’s Ritual, it’s New Zealand made. 31A Matakana Valley Road, Matakana design-pod 20

Leigh • Pakiri Leigh Harbour lies on the western side of Omaha Cove and is the only remaining commercial fishing port in the area. Catches from local fishing boats are exported to markets nationally and internationally. There are a number of beaches close to Leigh including Mathesons Bay and Whangateau. Daniel’s Reef and Pakiri are the two most well-known surfing spots in the area.
Pakiri is also the base for the famed Pakiri Beach Horse Riding excursions. But the attraction, which brings thousands of visitors through Leigh every year, is undoubtedly the Cape Rodney-Okakari Pt Marine Reserve, more commonly known as Goat Island. The 518-hectare reserve was established in 1975 and is NZ’s oldest protected marine area. It provides several organised options including scenic marine observations, glass-bottom boat trips and scuba-diving; fishing is strictly prohibited.
“NZ fur seals often winter over in the Cape Rodney area, between Goat Island and Ti Point. Dolphins and whales also regularly visit these waters.”

No visit to the Mahurangi area would be complete without a picnic at the mainland sanctuary that is Tawharanui Regional Park, at the end of Takatu Road. It is NZ’s first integrated open sanctuary where farming, public recreation and conservation combine. The 588-hectare park is home to endangered species such as the brown kiwi, bellbird, pateke, green gecko and saddleback. There are several walking trails
and two mountain bike tracks, camping facilities and surfing spots. A 400-hectare marine reserve abuts the park’s northern coast so leave the fishing line at home, but don’t forget to pack a set of binoculars. Note: The park gate is open from 6am to 9pm during summer (daylight savings). The last six kms of the route is a winding, gravel road so exercise care. Dogs are prohibited in the park at all times.

GOLF in MATAKANA
Discover what many have found
North Harbour’s premier country golf club since 1908
Considered by a growing number of serious golfers as a hidden treasure in NZ, the 18 hole, par 70, Omaha Beach Golf Club is less than one hour drive from central Auckland, but a world away from the frantic pace of the city. Bordered by the sea on one side and a natural estuary on the other, it is a course that offers some unique and pleasant surprises as you move around it. We can promise at least two things: the warmest of welcomes and a day to remember. Club, cart & trundler hire • Group bookings welcome • Café & bar - perfect venue for all functions

Mangawhai • Te Arai magical Sand, sun and surf make a heady combination too good to resist for the thousands of holidaymakers who head for Mangawhai every summer. While the beach is definitely a major drawcard, there’s a huge range of ways to enjoy this special part of the north. The 5km Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, one of the most stunning walks in the region, is one of many tracks in the area. The estuary is a safe haven for water skiers and sailors, and several charter operators can help you catch the one that won’t get away. There’s a first
class golf course at the Heads, next door to the newlydeveloped skatepark. Markets operate on weekends and are a great place to stock up on olives, wine and other locally-grown fare and locally-made craft. The NZ dotterel can be found scurrying along the shore of Te Arai at almost any time of year. They sport a brilliant rusty red breast when prospecting and breeding, between July and March. Over the breeding season, volunteers at Te Arai monitor bird safety. Fenced areas mark where the dotterel chicks may be, but dotterel chicks roam outside these areas so visitors need to take care. Be mindful of the sounds of warning the birds make and please keep dogs and vehicles off the beach.

If you drive an electric car and find yourself running low on power, then head for Wellsford. The town’s new library, which opened in 2013, is the first in New Zealand to get electric car charging points. WiFi and public computers are also available at the library, which features artworks and design elements that reflect Wellsford’s historic connection with the Kaipara Harbour. The building is located in the War Memorial Park, on Port Albert Road, adjacent to the Albertland Heritage Centre. NZ has three official languages – English, Maori or Te Reo, and NZ
sign language. Although Maori words are common, especially in our place names, Pakeha (non-Maori) without Maori connections, seldom have the opportunity to experience Maori language and culture. That’s what makes the Maori cultural village Te Hana Te Ao Marama, on SH1 just north of Wellsford, such a special place. Through guided tours, visitors can learn about Maori history and heritage. For group bookings, there is also the opportunity to take in a cultural concert or kapa haka performance, and enjoy a buffet cooked in a traditional earth oven or hangi.
“Each letter in the name Wellsford represents an early settler family. Many descendents of these families still live in the area: Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble.”

Kaiwaka
country charm There is something a little different about Kaiwaka, the ‘little town of lights’, on State Highway 1, just south of the Brynderwyns. Over the years, it has continued to attract people looking for alternatives to a mainstream lifestyle. The town has two eco-villages – Otamatea and Kohatu Toa – as well as privately run retreats and many individual landholders experimenting with sustainable lifestyle system. It was one of the first Transition Towns in NZ and runs a Green $ Scheme.
A number of the cafes sell organic food, and landmark businesses include the funky Café Eutopia and the Dutch Cheese Shop. Kaiwaka was a trading and commercial centre from the late 1850s, but as the kauri timber and gum industries declined towards the end of the century, dairy farming became established. The Hakaru Dairy Company was formed to serve Kaiwaka farmers in 1902. Steamers provided regular services to the town well into the 20th century, stopping only with the rise in motor vehicle transport.
“Novelist Mary Jane Mander (1877-1949), who wrote The Story of a NZ River, attended school at Wellsford, Port Albert and Kaiwaka.”
