Mahurangi is the shortened version of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’, which translates to ‘the rock that points to the sky’. It has been suggested that the name comes from the tribe Ngatirongo, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei. The Mahurangi district once stretched from Auckland’s North Shore to Te Arai.

KIA ORA | WELCOME What makes the Mahurangi region the jewel in Auckland’s crown? It’s hard to know where to start … For many, it would be our long, white sandy beaches with surf breaks and rock fishing where it’s easy to leave the crowds behind and commune with seabirds and salt spray. Others might say it’s our regional parks with their camping and picnicking facilities, outstanding walks and environmental programmes. The more gastronomically-inclined visitor is likely to vote for the area’s entrepreneurial wineries, breweries and cafes, which bring with them a rich flavour of local produce, ingenuity and innovation. The diving and boating opportunities, as well as the lengthening cycleway networks, would no doubt appeal to the more physically minded. But let’s not forget the many local museums where you can while away hours learning about the region’s rich history, from the Bohemian settlers at Puhoi and the Albertlanders on the Kaipara to the story of the kauri at Matakohe. We are a region spoilt for choice. So keep this issue of Destination close at hand to guide you to the many attractions we have to offer and may you take home many happy memories. Enjoy!

PUHOI

PUHOI

Charm is the word that springs to mind when you visit Puhoi. While it is a mere 50km from the centre of NZ’s largest city, it is a village that resonates with country hospitality and a relaxed pace of life. In Maori, Puhoi means slow and unhurried, and the village reflects the meaning as much today as it did more than 150 years ago when the first European settlers arrived. It is hard to imagine what those first Germanspeaking Bohemians thought as they were ferried up the Puhoi River in 1863. They had travelled halfway round the world filled with dreams of ‘the new world’, where they could secure their own land and be their own masters. The reality was bush dwellings or whare on a muddy riverbank, incessant rain, strange bird calls in the dense bush surrounding them and the

constant challenge of keeping vital supplies dry. But this hardy stock of settlers survived and prospered, thanks in no small way to the help and example of the Nga-Whetu iwi, whose village was at Te Muri. The Bohemian influence is still tangible in the village today. The museum, located in the former convent school at the southern end of town, tells Puhoi’s story in photographs and memorabilia. It includes a reference room and has the genealogical records of the first immigrants. The neighbouring historic Saints Peter and Paul church is well worth a visit with its altar painting commissioned by the people of Puhoi from an artist in Bohemia, which is an exact copy of the one in Littitz church in Bohemia.

WARKWORTH

If the weather is fine and you feel like stretching your legs, then fortify yourself with a coffee and scone at one of the town cafes, pack a small back pack with snacks and water, and head for the river. If you start at the corner of Elizabeth and Queen Streets, you’ll see The Bridgehouse Lodge, which dates back to 1854. There has been a hotel operating on that site for more than 130 years. The pathway goes under the bridge and then runs along the riverfront, behind the retail centre, to Lucy Moore Park. Keep an eye out for the Birds of the Mahurangi art installations – a series of native bird silhouettes made of corten steel. The river is also home to the restored scow Jane Gifford, which is normally berthed at Warkworth Wharf, and the little steamboat Kapanui. Built locally, the

Jane Gifford was a regular visitor to the town early last century, carrying vital commodities as well as cattle and road metal. She was re-launched in 2009 and now has a busy life as a sail training ship and charter boat. Public sailings on “the Jane” are run throughout the summer and schedules are available at the i-SITE. Eventually, the river walkway will reach the ruins of the Wilson Cement Works, which in 1903 employed 180 men and was exporting 20,320 tonnes a year. The works closed in 1928 when the plant was moved to Whangarei, but despite its derelict state, the structure is still impressive with walls 228mm thick, 12m high and 18.3m in length. The flooded quarry alongside the building is a popular swimming hole – a great place to cool off on a hot day.

ATTRACTIONS

The town has numerous attractions including the Warkworth and Districts Museum at Parry Kauri Park, the riverbank walkway, Lucy Moore Park and the Courthouse built in 1880. The magnificent Norfolk Pine in the grounds of the Warkworth Inn, in the main street, was planted in 1874 to commemorate the birth of the thenpublican’s son. The site is now the centre of a major redevelopment project, which includes high-rise retirement apartments, new retail shops and a refurbished hotel. The i-SITE in Baxter Street has copies of a Heritage Trail brochure for anyone interested in a closer look at Warkworth’s history.

FOOD

TASTE BUD TREATS Although the Mahurangi region has long been known as a food and wine hub, it’s no longer just the many markets, cafes and restaurants that are attracting attention. There’s been a revolution in local food production and innovation, as more people not only grow fresh produce, but develop new products and services to satisfy a growing demand for authentic, healthy foods. Two new veggie box delivery services specialising in local and organic produce have recently been set up – Ooooby (Out Of Our Own Backyards) in Matakana and New Zealand’s Patch in

Wellsford and Warkworth – and there are any number of bijou businesses springing up, making everything from almond milk, nut butters, locally roasted coffee and buffalo cheese to kombucha, smoked goods, sausages and the latest ‘superfoods’. To get a feel for what’s happening at ground level, the best place to start is undoubtedly the bustling local produce markets, which are held mainly on Saturday mornings (see our market directory on page 13), where you’ll find everything you need and more for an authentic taste of the region.

TASTE THE KITCHEN SHOP will inspire your culinary creativity. With the finest crafted cookware we’ve got everything you need for your gourmet kitchen. Local agents for Kitchenaid, Cuisinart, Magimix, Le Crueset, Denby , Raco, Maxwell & Williams, Dualit, Wilton, Analon plus many more this iconic store in the heart of Warkworth (opposite the Bowling Club) is a must visit for people who love to cook. IN THE PINK

There’s something about a fresh, crisp fruity mouthful of vibrant pink wine that sings of the lazy, hazy days of summer. The Matakana wine region has been producing rosé since the late 1990s and is now blessed with at least nine different examples, grown and made locally. These cover the full spectrum of colour and taste, and are made from a wide variety of grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and even an Italian Dolcetto. You can find every hue, from palest salmon pink to vivid fuchsia, and every style from bone dry to strawberry sweetness. For this reason, there can’t really be said to be a distinctive Matakana style of rosé; indeed, much like the region’s winemakers themselves, there is

an eclectic selection of different characters and specialisations here. Probably the ideal way to find your favourite is to visit local cellar doors and literally taste your way around the area. However, if time is limited or you want to see and try the widest selection of wines – including those from smaller, private vineyards not open to the public – then The Vintry wine bar in Matakana is the place to head for. Not only can you try the wines and enjoy them on site, but they also sell bottles to take home at cellar door prices. You can also find a selection of Matakana wines, including rosés, at the Matakana Liquor Centre, the Matakana Four Square and New World in Warkworth.

Red grapes make red wine and white grapes make white, so what makes pink wines pink? Well, it’s not as some people believe, just a matter of mixing white wine with a little red. The colour in virtually all rosé wines comes from letting the grape juice – which is actually white, even from red grapes – stay in contact with the red grape skins after the fruit has been crushed. The degree and intensity of colour depends on how long it is left in contact with the skins – a brief encounter produces rosé juice (which is then made in the same way as a white wine), but if left for days or weeks, the result is red.

KAWAU ISLAND

Kawau Island is best known for its historic Mansion House, the former residence of governor and later prime minister, Sir George Grey, between 1862 and 1888. Much of the island is modified and it has many exotic species including wallabies and pine trees introduced by Governor Grey. Originally used for sheep farming, the discovery of manganese and copper led to a mining boom around the mid1800s. The remains of the mine’s brick pump house chimney and a tunnel can be explored near Bon Accord Harbour. Access to the island is by private boat or water taxi. Kawau Bay is a renowned fishing and sailing paradise, with many sheltered anchorages.

In a first for Kawau Island, a native bush remnant was permanently protected with a QEII National Trust covenant this year. The 5.5ha property is owned by the Duder family, which purchased the land in 1951. It includes a patch of kanuka forest with old puriri and pohutukawa trees, which have managed to escape development.

CONSERVATION UP CLOSE The pristine white dunes and rolling turquoise surf of Tawharanui Regional Park’s beaches are always a popular summer haunt for surfers and swimmers, but there are rewards for those willing to venture beyond the picnic areas and pohutukawa trees. At Tawharanui, visitors can encounter some of New Zealand’s rarest wildlife. It’s one thing to read about Tawharanui’s pest free open sanctuary, where conservation, recreation and farming co-exist, but nothing can prepare you for the sight – or sound – of the range of birds that you quite literally won’t find anywhere else. One of the most rewarding walks is the Ecology Trail. Tucked into the green rolling hills behind the beach is another world of wetland and native bush, where the branches are heavy with saddlebacks, bellbirds and other small birds. In fact, it can feel more like an aviary than a walking track; the birdsong is extraordinary. Then, coming out of the bush onto rolling

farmland, with incredible views, you might well see one or two of Tawharanui’s latest and rarest residents, the takahe. The first takahe were released in October 2014 and one of the best places to spot them is in the Mangatawhiri wetland, which is on the left-hand side of the road, just past the ranger’s office. Come back in the evening (though take note of gate closing times if you are driving) and there is the opportunity to see or hear a kiwi, as well. Tawharanui covers 588 hectares and was NZ’s first integrated open sanctuary. A Marine Reserve, established first as a Marine Park in 1981, covers much of the northern coastline and extends about half a nautical mile seaward. The Marine Reserve is a ‘no take’ zone and all life is protected here.

RARE BIRDS Takahe were once common throughout New Zealand, but they are now one of our most endangered birds, with only around 270 birds left. Despite their rarity, they can often be seen in the park, in grassland near walking tracks, and they seem unperturbed by the presence of humans. Although their appearance is similar to the pukeko, they are quite distinctive – takahe are flightless and much chunkier – an adult male can weigh up to 3kg. Their relocation to Tawharanui was a collaboration involving Auckland Council, the Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society Inc (Tossi), the Department of Conservation and Mitre 10 Mega Warkworth.

CONQUERING TAMAHUNGA

TAMAHUNG

Away from the popular beaches, markets and vineyards is one of the best forest walks north of Auckland. Mt Tamahunga forms the backdrop of the Matakana Coast and with a summit at 437m, it is the highest mainland point in the region. The slopes of the mountain are covered in regenerating forest with a number of large, gnarled puriri trees and an under-canopy of nikau palms. The song of tui is heard in the bush, thanks to a group of volunteers who work year-round to control pests such as possum and mustelids. Bellbirds and kaka are also returning and can often be seen and heard in the Tamahunga bush. The mountain can be traversed from either the north or the south, with a choice of treks up to a steep, eight-kilometre hike. The most common route is from Omaha Valley Road,

about 500m off Leigh Road. The 2.5km round trip to the summit takes about an-hour-and-a-half to complete. The track is very steep in parts and is often muddy following rain, so it’s best to go in a dry week. The forest largely obscures the views from the summit, but you can look out towards Omaha beach and the Coromandel from a rocky outcrop near the summit. But if it’s views that you are after, the track that starts on Rodney Road has a panoramic sweep to the Sky Tower in Auckland and north to Whangarei Heads. Rodney Road is at the top of the hill between Leigh and Pakiri, off Pakiri Road. The track starts from the end of the road. It’s best to use two cars, leaving one at the Omaha Valley Road track entrance, so you don’t have to loop back. The 6km track takes about three-and-a-half hours. The longer 8km hike starts at Bathgate Road in Pakiri Village and climbs from one side of the mountain to the other. The Pakiri end traverses farmland, with views to the north opening as you climb, before the track is enveloped by forest near the summit.

The 230-hectare Tamahunga Ecological Area is managed by the Department of Conservation. A further 10 hectares at the summit is a scientific reserve managed by Ngati Manuhiri. Adjacent landowners have covenanted much of the nearby forest. Warriors from the Tainui iwi made the mountain their home after escaping from nearby Kawau Island in 1864. The men were imprisoned by the government after a battle in Waikato. Two hundred prisoners escaped with assistance from the Ngati Manuhiri people and lived on an extensive pa near the summit.

DESTINATION 2015

There’s a lot to do in Matakana at any time of the year, but summer is when the village and beaches really come alive. The weekend markets are full of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, the beaches are the perfect place to picnic, or learn to surf, sail or SUP, and fishing off one of the many local wharves is great fun even if the fish aren’t biting. If the weather turns overcast, there are galleries, craft and retail shops, wineries, cafes and the Collectables Trail to explore.

Point Wells. In 2016, the event will be held on March 5.

MATA KANA

The village information office, in the cinema foyer, is the best place to find out about all that there is to see and do. If you want to ditch the car for an afternoon, the sixkilometre pathway between Matakana, Omaha and Point Wells is suitable for bikes and walkers with some stunning scenery as a reward for your effort. The Matakana community built the walkway, funded through fundraising events such as the annual Fruit Loop gambol through the vineyards and orchards around

It seems appropriate that one of New Zealand’s most popular Farmers Markets operates in Matakana. Among the earliest settlers in the area were brothers Charles and James Matthew, sons of a Scottish Laird. They both held degrees in arboriculture and horticulture, and established NZ’s first commercial orchards and nurseries on their property in the Waiwhata Valley, near Pukematekeo, on Leigh Road. When the kauri bushmen followed with their bullock teams to clear the land for dairying and sheep, the settlement began to take shape. A school, churches, stores, a boarding house and eventually a post office were established. The Matakana Dairy Co-op Company operated for just over 60 years until its closure in 1963 and the building and its grounds are now used for a Saturday market. The Matakana Hotel operates in the old boarding house.

The best way to appreciate the village is on foot where you can take in the Matakana Falls, the iconic Matakana toilet block above the new playground and the King George V War Memorial.

SOMETHING BREWING

LOCAL BEERS There’s nothing like a hot summer’s day to work up a thirst for a nice cold beer. But NZ’s drinking preferences are changing. Since 2008, the volume of beer consumed by Kiwis has fallen 12 per cent. Bucking this trend is the off premise craft beer sector, where sales have increased 42 per cent in the last year, reflecting an increasing preference for big flavoured beer over quantity.

we’ve noticed over the years is that customers are increasingly willing to stray from their beer loyalty – they’re willing to give some of the new products a go and they’re enjoying the full-bodied flavours of these beers and ciders. It’s fantastic that we’ve got so many small breweries setting-up locally.”

Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers

One of the first craft beer outlets in the North Island was the Tahi Bar in the spirit and promotes health. - Thomas Jefferson Warkworth which owners, Ian and Silke Marriott, opened in 2008. “The local supermarket had three craft beers in 2008; now they have more than A lot of the craft brewers started as home brewers, which might explain 160. It gives you some idea of how the craft beer industry has grown.” their confidence to experiment, enhancing the natural flavours of the hops Ian believes the tougher drink-driving laws have had an influence on beer with ingredients such as coffee, chocolate and berries, as well as some drinkers’ preferences. “If you’re only going to have a couple of beers, then more unusual additions such as cucumber, potatoes and kumara. The why not choose something with flavour so you can really enjoy the taste. result is an eclectic range of beers and ciders to choose from. People aren’t just drinking for the effect and it’s changing drinking habits.” “I believe anyone would be hard put not to find a beer or cider they liked. At least half of the nine beers and ciders on tap at Tahi are locally brewed, It is just a matter of being prepared to keep tasting until you hit upon the offering a range of styles and flavours to meet almost any palate. “What one that is right for you,” Ian says.

HERITAGE

HERI TAGE

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe tells the story of the transformation of Northland from a land of giant forests to the rolling pastures visitors see today. Museum collections assistant Kae Bond, the daughter of museum founder Mervyn Sterling, says kauri are the second largest tree species in the world. The forests once stretched from Raglan to Cape Reinga, but now only one per cent of that ancient realm remains. The museum opened in 1962 and at 4500 sqm, it is an impressive exhibition space. It charts the history of felling, transportation and processing of kauri, and has on display the world’s largest collection of kauri gum. Kauri was a sought-after timber for its large, branchless trunks that could withstand a millennium of weathering – the museum has a 30-million year old piece of kauri recovered from a coal mine in Victoria, Australia, where all the other timber had become fossilised. It also has a number of giant kauri logs over 1000 years old, cut to expose the growth rings so visitors can relate the growth of the tree back to medieval times. Scientists are also using the rings to study the fluctuations in

temperature and rainfall over millennia, which may help predict how the climate may change in the future. The immensity of the trees is shown in a cross-section of a huge kauri, cut from root to crown, which takes up the full length of a large hall. But the highlight of the collection is a large tabletop from the oldest known kauri – dated at 4500 years old. The kauri gum ‘gold rush’ spurred the economy of Northland for decades, until synthetic varnishes superseded gum as a varnish. The museum’s collection has everything from rough hunks of gum to polished pieces, jewellery, carved figures and lamps. But the best part of the collection is the display of preserved animals trapped inside the gum thousands of years ago, perfectly preserved in a golden tomb. Maori used the gum as a fire starter and the soot from burnt gum was then used to create the dye in moko tattoos. The sawmill room has a large working industrial sawmill and there is even a full-sized replica boarding house, of the style found in the Kaipara district in the early 1900s.

There were once giants living in the green hills of Northland. The arrival of European settlers brought the first axemen, which eventually led to the mechanised deforestation that continued to the 1960s. Based near the start of State Highway 16, a visit to the museum is a perfect accompaniment to a trip along the Kauri Coast.

The Mangawhai Museum is a new and modern museum that celebrates life around our harbour from building ships to building sandcastles. The stories are told with a wonderful collection of graphics, displays and videos that will keep you interested and engaged. So allow plenty of time!

MARINE DISCOVERY

Come and learn about New Zealand’s unique marine environment at Goat Island!

The country’s first marine reserve, just north of Leigh, is the perfect destination for divers and snorkellers, or anyone interested in learning more about the wonders of NZ’s rocky marine environment. Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, better known as Goat Island, was established in 1975, and protects 547 hectares of coastline and sea. Dive under the waves and you can expect to see five main habitats – seaweed gardens, coralline turf/bare rock flats, kelp forests, sponge gardens and deep reefs. Some of the large sponges are estimated to be more than a century old. Common fish species include snapper, piper, silver trevally and banded wrasse. The University of Auckland’s marine laboratory sits to the east of the beach. The architecturally stunning Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre is located within the compound and provides a wealth of information about the marine environment. It’s a perfect place for families, with interactive displays and touch tanks, which are great fun for children.

Imagine ...

Facilities near the beach include toilets, changing rooms, cold showers and an information kiosk. There is also a camping ground nearby and a striking kaipoutiaki on the headland, overlooking the beach. All marine life is protected and it is prohibited to take, kill or collect anything from the beach or water.

a deserted beach... wind in your face, sun on your skin and only the sound of hoof beats and surf on white sand!

ATIU CREEK REGIONAL PARK Atiu Creek is about 20 kilometres west of Wellsford, on the Okahukura (Tapora) Peninsula, on the Kaipara Harbour. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and should come prepared for walking. Atiu Creek is a vast property which requires time, energy and good footwear to explore. The property enjoys an extensive harbour frontage and has large tracts of native forest and wetlands with a combination of open space and fantastic views. It is rich in both Maori and Pakeha cultural history, with significant pa and early settler sites. It is also a working farm so no dogs are allowed.

The young British-born Pierre Chatelanat purchased the property in 1951. He sold the majority of the block to the government for development as returned soldiers’ farms and retained the portion that became known as Atiu Creek Farm. Pierre and Jackie Chatelanat gifted the farm to the people of New Zealand in October 2005. The 843-hectare property is protected by a QEII Trust open space covenant, which is managed by Auckland Council. The Chatelanats’ gift was to ensure that future generations could enjoy unspoilt access to this part of the Kaipara Harbour forever.

WELLSFORD

WELLSFORD

Straddling SH1, Wellsford’s town centre has a choice of cafes and restaurants where travellers can pick up fast food or enjoy a leisurely meal. The Albertland & District Museum, just above the library on Port Albert Road, is well worth a visit or wander down to the old railway station, now just a shadow of the busy centre it was when it opened more than a century ago. The library provides internet access as well as an electric car recharging station. The nearby freshwater lakes of Tomarata are a great family destination for picnics, swimming and water-skiing. Just south of the town is the 4.3 km

Dome Valley Walkway, which takes about two hours to complete. From the Dome summit (336m), there are views of the Hauraki Gulf and Mahurangi Peninsula. Te Hana is on the highway just north of Wellsford, where the replica Maori village is across the road from ‘jewellery for giants’ Arts Factory. The factory is owned by master carver and sculptor, Kerry Strongman, who specialises in carvings from swamp kauri which can be many thousands of years old. Some of the pieces stand up to three-metres high and have been sold to buyers from around the world.

OTAMATEA

For travellers looking for a true countryside experience, there is no better destination than Otamatea, which takes in Paparoa, Maungaturoto and Matakohe. It is the birthplace of New Zealand’s first NZ-born Prime Minister Joseph Gordon Coates (1878-1943) whose memorial can be found on the corner of SH1 and SH12, at the Brynderwyns. The Coates Memorial Church is located opposite The Kauri Museum.

in the world and among New Zealand’s 10 most notable trees. The annual Pahi Regatta is held in January. The programme includes a full range of boat races and novelty events, beauty contests and all of the usual types of stalls and attractions. In the lead-up to Maungaturoto’s 150th celebration in 2013, a massive beautification project took place along the main streets of the town, which can still be enjoyed today. Nearby Piroa Falls owe their origins to a band of hard volcanic rock, which has resisted erosion, to create a spectacular waterfall into a deep plunge pool. They are especially impressive after heavy rains and the pool provides an excellent spot for swimming. There’s a good picnic site on the bank, so it’s a perfect place for families in the summer months. The falls are located on Gorge Road, about 5 km north of Maungaturoto (the road is metalled for the last few kilometres). Access is via a fiveminute walk into the gorge, developed by Rotary and DOC.

OTAMATEA

Climbing peaks, bush reserves, local beaches and the northern Wairoa River are all within easy driving distance. Picturesque Pahi sits six kilometres from Paparoa, almost encircled by tidal seawater. It is the Kauri Coast’s most popular departure for leisure fishing and regattas. Fishermen make good use of the wharf, pulling in snapper or kahawai, or netting flounder and mullet. Green lipped mussels and Pacific oysters can be collected at low tide. In the public reserve and camping ground stands the renowned Moreton Bay Fig, planted about 1850. It is reputed to be the finest specimen of its type

Dogs are prohibited from many regional park areas (including car parks). Check the rules before taking your canine in.

Kerry Strongman sculptor and master artist opens his studios and galleries to the public. His studios are situated on the main highway 5 minutes north of Wellsford at Te Hana in a bright ‘tree frog’ green and black former factory complex. The southern building is home to Kerry’s main workshop, gallery and displays. Kerry’s current creations feature his ‘Jewellery for Giants’ series of mega sculptures in 45,000 year old swamp Kauri – sized from 30cm to 3m+ in size. The Galleries eclectic range of art and Artifacts includes Jade, Stone, Bone, Wood, Precious Metal Jewellery, Paintings, Sculpture, Tribal Carving and Weaving. Plus many more items, too numerous to list. KAI WAKA

Kaiwaka was a trading and commercial centre from the late 1850s, but as the kauri timber and gum industries declined towards the end of the century, dairy farming became established. The Hakaru Dairy Company was formed to serve Kaiwaka farmers in 1902. Steamers provided regular services to Kaiwaka well into the 20th century, stopping only with the rise in motor vehicle transport. Over the years, the town has continued to attract people looking for alternatives to

a mainstream lifestyle. There are two ecovillages – Otamatea and Kohatu Toa – as well as privately run retreats and many individual landholders experimenting with sustainable lifestyle systems. It was one of the first Transition Towns in NZ and recently, the first ChargeNet Electric Vehicle fast charger in New Zealand was installed outside Jaques Four Square. The Tritium Veefil charging unit in the car park allows electric cars to recharge in just 20 minutes, instead of the six to eight hour standard top up time, at a cost of around $10.

MANGAWHAI - WAIPU One of the prettiest stretches of coastline in the area runs from Mangawhai north to Waipu, passing through Langs Beach. Waipu is the home of the famous Highland Games held each year on New Year’s Day, which celebrates the town’s Celtic past. The day is packed with piping, fiddling, drumming, highland dancing, athletics and heavyweight field events, with all competitors dressed in kilts. It attracts people from all over NZ and is an opportunity to share Clan heritage and genealogy. Just outside the town are the Waipu Caves, which contain a significant population of glow-worms. Mangawhai has long been one of Auckland’s most popular holiday destinations and the assortment of baches that cluster around its sheltered harbour are

testament to this. Every summer thousands of visitors flock to the surf at ‘The Heads’ or Te Arai, just a short drive south, or try their luck with rod and reel. Mangawhai Heads beach also provides access to one of the most stunning walks in the region – the 5km Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway which passes through coastal forest and nikau groves. Be sure to check the tides if you are planning to do the loop back along the beach. There are plenty of man-made diversions as well – a top golf course, regular markets that showcase local produce and craft, a string of home-based art galleries and the Mangawhai Museum, which has taken the harbour as its inspiration. It is here that visitors can learn about the area’s history, both natural and human. The museum includes a gift shop and café.

TE ARAI LOCAL

WHAI

A new population of black mudfish was discovered in the Te Arai wetlands, just south of Mangawhai, this year. The black mudfish is a unique member of New Zealand’s native fish fauna. It survives the dry summer months by burying itself in the mud. However, unlike fish such as eels, mudfish lack the ability to colonise new habitats as they spend their entire lives in wetlands isolated from streams and the ocean.
