Origins
Mahurangi is an abbreviation of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’ – the rock that points to the sky – and is said to have come from the Ngatirongo tribe, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei. At the time of European settlement in the 1840s, the name referred to the Mahurangi River where Warkworth was founded, as well as the 100,000 acres surrounding it. Mahurangi is in the rohe of Ngati Manuhiri, which extends from Mangawhai to Whangaparaoa including Hauturu O Toi (Little Barrier), Kawau O Tumaro and Tiritiri Matangi. 2 | Destination 2018

Kia ora • welcome The Mahurangi region may be less than an hour’s drive north of the hustle and bustle of Auckland, but it is a world away in terms of rest and relaxation. The region has something for everyone – bush walks and beaches, markets and wine trails, fishing and diving, museums and galleries, cafes and restaurants – and so much more.
Take time to relax and enjoy the wonderful experiences this region has to offer ...

MUST-DO’S: And they’re free!
The area remains predominantly rural so if you veer off the beaten track, don’t be surprised to encounter sheep or cows being moved between paddocks. Just slow down, keep the blood pressure in check and relax. We can’t make visitors have a good time, but we will certainly do our best to give you a warm Mahurangi welcome. Keep this copy of Destination as a handy guide to all that this diverse and scenically spoilt area has to offer … and we hope you take home lots of happy memories.
Puhoi Hotel: This historic watering hole is bursting with fascinating memorabilia and museum pieces, and some of the patrons are quite memorable, too. Matakana Farmers Market: Down by the riverside in downtown Matakana you’ll find a bustling Saturday morning market (8am-1pm). Enjoy the entertainment and ambience, and there’s plenty of local produce if you’re feeling hungry. Goat Island Marine Reserve: Grab a mask and snorkel to best appreciate NZ’s oldest marine sanctuary where you can swim with huge snapper and blue maomao. If you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins, eagle rays, orca and penguins. Tawharanui Regional Park: See nature at her finest – sandy surf beaches, coastal and bush walks, and unparalleled views of the Hauraki Gulf and Hauturu. Encounters with kiwi and takahe are not uncommon. Mangawhai Coastal Walkway: This spectacular 8km walk along the clifftop loops back to Mangawhai Heads carpark along the beach. Moderate fitness is required and check the tides so you know when the beach is accessible.

Puhoi Puhoi is one of only two ethnic historic villages in NZ – the other being Akaroa, on Banks Peninsular near Christchurch.
The hotel is a museum in itself featuring such relics as bullock harnesses, giant saws and other tools, a reminder of the days when giant kauri were felled for timber. And you are sure to hear a good tale or two in the “Bullshit Corner”.
PUHOI ... www.puhoinz com
Puhoi was founded by Captain Martin Krippner, from Staab in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. He encouraged fellow Bohemians to join him and in 1863, 51 adults and 31 children sailed to New Zealand. These hardy pioneering families cleared the forest and probed the swamps with long spikes for kauri gum, which was a precious commodity in those days. The museum has kept full records of the pioneers’ genealogy and achievements, including the construction of the beautiful Church of St Peter and St Paul, dating back to 1881, which is an exact copy of the Littitz Church in Bohemia.

If walls could talk, there would be some tall tales to tell at the Puhoi Pub & Stables. The pub has been trading in one form or another since 1879 and like many historical watering holes, it has become something of a museum. The interior walls are lined with photographs and memorabilia from bygone days when bullock teams hauled giant logs from the nearby kauri forests and the roads were made of mud. One of the biggest events on the annual calendar in Puhoi is the Axemen’s Carnival, which is held in the grounds of the pub in January. Many of the events demonstrate the skills that were honed in those early times. Enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple, choose from the excellent bistro menu with daily specials, relax in the historic surroundings and take in the atmosphere.

Warkworth The commercial hub of the Mahurangi district is undoubtedly Warkworth, a town that is on the cusp of an unprecedented growth spurt. The current population of close to 5000 is expected to more than double over the next five years, as Auckland city looks further afield for residential options.
A relic of the town’s industrial past is the Wilson Cement Works, further down the river, but only accessible via Wilson Road. In its heyday, the plant employed around 180 workers and produced just over 20,000 tonnes of cement annually. The site was abandoned in 1929 and, despite the dilapidated state of the main structure, it is still an impressive sight with walls 228mm thick, 12m high and 18.3m long. The flooded quarry alongside the ruins is a popular picnic spot and swimming hole. Access to the old lime kilns, built in the 1880s, is via Kowhai Park, on the corner of State Highway 1 and Matakana Road, at the infamous Hill Street intersection. There are a number of tracks through the fivehectare park, which have been the focus of a hardworking team of volunteers. The plan is to eventually link the park to the showgrounds a little further north. Cement works at the end of Wilson Road The Jane Gifford, alongside Warkworth Wharf Lime kilns, off Kowhai Park Parry Kauri Park & museum

The town has a great selection of boutique shops, cafes and restaurants, and a walk on the riverfront is a must. Look for the rustic steel bird sculptures along the route, the work of artist Ruby Watson. The native bush on the far side of the river was gifted to the people of New Zealand by the late Henry and Helen Phibbs to ensure “that Warkworth would never have to look across the river and see houses”.

Snells• Sandspit • Kawau There are several vantage points along the peninsula that give spectacular views of Kawau Bay and nearby islands. Scandrett Regional Park, named after the Scandrett family that farmed the land for more than 130 years, is well worth a visit. The park includes a collection of farm buildings, as well as the original Scandrett Homestead built in 1884 of an early type of concrete, instead of the usual kauri timber. Highfield Garden Reserve, at Algies Bay, has great views and tame donkeys. The historic Mahurangi Regatta is held every January off Sullivans Bay or Scotts Landing, depending on the weather. Sometimes up to 100 classic or classic-style boats will take part, making a spectacular sight on the water. Sandspit is the stepping off point for Kawau Island, which covers more than 2000 hectares and is mostly privately owned. The Department of Conservation administers about 10 per cent of the island including Mansion House, the stately home of early governor George Grey. Originally used for sheep farming, the discovery of manganese and copper led to a mining boom around the mid-1800s. The remains of the mine’s brick pump house chimney and a tunnel can be explored near Bon Accord Harbour. Access to the island is by private boat or water taxi. Kawau Bay is a renowned fishing and sailing paradise, with many sheltered anchorages. Motuora Island, just south of Kawau, is a work in progress. It is an open sanctuary for endangered species, which is being replanted with native trees and shrubs by volunteers after many years of farming. Motuora is a taonga (treasure), to which the tangata whenua (people of the land) have a spiritual, cultural and historical relationship. The 80-hectare island is administered by the Department of Conservation. Camping is permitted and there is good landing for kayaks and boats. The island is predator-free and brown kiwi have been introduced. For details on how to access the island, contact the Department of Conservation’s Warkworth office on 09 425 7842.

Situated on the water at Sandspit, this is a family-friendly park that offers a range of accommodation from self-contained waterfront cabins to powered and non-powered camp sites and hardstand sites. It is set among mature trees, just a stone’s throw from the Kawau ferry and the Sandspit Yacht Club. Guests can enjoy safe swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and bush walks. The quirky facilities are housed in what looks like a pioneer village and, in fact, four buildings date from the 1900s. There is a general store, games room, TV room and library, as well as laundries and kitchens.

Matakana & surrounds Largely through the efforts of volunteers, travellers between Point Wells, Omaha Beach and Matakana can stretch their legs off road and enjoy amazing views as a reward. The plan is to eventually connect Pakiri to Warkworth through a series of walkways/ pathways. In the Leigh area, for example, there is the Ti Point coastal walk, which starts at the wharf; the Matheson Bay bush walk; the stunning Leigh coastal walkway with views across Omaha Bay, Tawharanui and Hauturu (Little Barrier); a harbour walk; and the Goat Island coastal walk, which starts opposite the Marine Discovery Centre. Most are between one and two hours duration. Omaha Beach also has a network of walkways for all levels of fitness. (Check out the local websites, right, for more information). The popular Saturday morning markets in Matakana hint at the area’s history. Among the earliest settlers were brothers Charles and James Matthew, sons of a Scottish laird. They established NZ’s first commercial orchards and nurseries on their property in the Waiwhata Valley, near Pukematekeo, on Leigh Road. A little further afield are numerous picnic spots and secluded beaches just waiting to be discovered. Tawharanui Regional Park, on Takatu Road, is NZ’s first mainland, integrated open sanctuary where farming, public recreation and conservation of native species combine. Thanks to a 2.5km predator-proof fence, Auckland Council, in conjunction with the community group TOSSI, has been re-introducing threatened or endangered species, including kiwi and takahe. For those inclined to quieter pursuits, there are numerous galleries, cafes and vineyards spread throughout the district, providing a welcome respite for the hungry and thirsty traveller. Many of the vineyards offer wine tasting, and each has a distinctive character. Tawharanui Regional Park Goat Island Marine Reserve Local wineries Saturday morning markets

Wellsford • Kaipara One of the quietest drives in the district is along the Kaipara Coast Highway (SH16), which starts in Wellsford and is an alternative route to Auckland via Helensville. The road traverses dairy, sheep and beef country, as well as providing spectacular views of the vast Kaipara Harbour. A detour along Port Albert Road leads to the historic settlement of Port Albert, where nearly 3000 English immigrants sailed to NZ between 1862 and 1865 to establish Albertland, a non-conformist religious settlement. Their fascinating story is told at the Albertland Museum in Wellsford. Just south of Port Albert is one of the cutest churches in the district, Minnesdale Chapel, on Shegadeen Road. The church is a Category 1 Historic Places Trust building that overlooks the Oruawharo River, a tributary of the Kaipara Harbour. It officially opened for worship in December 1867 and has been in continuous use ever since for services, weddings and christenings. Jackie and Pierre Chatelanat gifted their 843-hectare farm on Run Road, south of Minniesdale, to the people of New Zealand in 2004 and it opened as the Atiu Regional Park in 2008. The property, which is still a working farm, is a quiet retreat for anyone seeking long walks and beautiful coastal scenery. As well as pasture, it has stands of native bush and wetlands, and is a significant habitat for three nationally threatened bird species – the NZ dabchick, brown teal and the North Island brown kiwi. There are 17 known historic places on the farm, plus a canoe portage area, numerous pa sites and the remnants of a (19th century) settler camp. Heritage Timber felling, gum digging, ship building, farming and fruit growing were some of the industries that drew settlers to the Mahurangi district during the 1800s. Roads were poorly formed and often impassable during winter, so the area depended on the regular shipping services that ran between Mangawhai and Auckland. The boats, many of them scows like the restored Jane Gifford, now berthed alongside the Warkworth Wharf, made regular stops at Leigh, Whangateau, Matakana, Warkworth and Puhoi to transport everything from passengers to produce and livestock. The settlers’ stories are well told at the area’s numerous museums, many of which are run by the descendants of the pioneering families. Three – Puhoi, Albertland (Wellsford) and Waipu – focus on the settlement schemes that brought families from Bohemia, England and Scotland. The Kauri Museum at Matakohe catalogues the timber industry, as well as early pioneering life (don’t miss the amazing collection of kauri gum), while the Mangawhai Museum collection is largely inspired by stories around its harbour. Warkworth Museum is located beside Parry Kauri Park, the home of the magnificent McKinney and Simpson kauri trees, the largest trees of their kind on the east coast of NZ. The museum houses an eclectic collection of domestic, farming and industrial memorabilia, as well as well-maintained local archives, ideal for anyone researching their family history.

In the early 1860’s, William Rawson Brame had a vision to establish a classless, nonconformist society in New Zealand. On May 29, 1862, the first migrant ships, Matilda Wattenbach and Hanover, departed from the London Docks bound for the Albertland Settlement on the Kaipara Harbour. In total, more than 3000 settlers arrived as part of the scheme and many of their descendents still live in the wider Wellsford area. The Albertland Story chronicles the trials and tribulations of this hardy band of pioneers through extensive records, memorabilia, artifacts and other items relating to the Albertland settlement scheme.

Mangawhai • Te Arai • Waipu There is something about the beach culture and a proliferation of recreational activities that makes every day feel like a holiday in Mangawhai. And this extends along the stunning coastal strip heading north to Langs Beach and Waipu. The number of residents in Mangawhai is normally around 3700, but this can double at peak holiday times. The town’s population is expected to grow by 1160 over the next 10 years to reach a population close to 5000 by 2028, according to Kaipara District Council. The two main communities in Mangawhai, based around The Village and The Heads, both have a good range of shops to meet basic needs and satisfy anyone seeking some retail therapy. The area has a particularly strong artistic community with regular exhibitions, studio tours and events. Check out their website to find out more (mangawhaiartists. co.nz). For a better understanding of the area’s history, geology and environment, there’s no better place to start than the Mangawhai Museum, just over the causeway on Molesworth Drive. The main highway north once went through Waipu, but today the town moves at a more relaxed pace. The artisan market in Coronation Hall (held on the second Sunday of the month) is well worth a visit. There are Highland Games every New Year’s Day, complete with hammer throwing, caber tossing, Highland country dancing, and bagpipe, fiddling and drumming championships. A short drive into the hills behind the town takes you to the Waipu Caves, home to a significant population of glow-worms. Te Arai, a short drive south of Mangawhai, was once a secluded destination for surfers and campers. More recently, it has become the site of a controversial luxury housing development, which includes a world-class golf course, Tara Iti.
