She’s a retired working girl, who has become the showpiece of the Warkworth Wharf. The scow Jane Gifford was built locally in 1908 and was a regular visitor to the area early last century. Recently restored, she was re-launched during her 100th year to become a sail training ship and charter boat. Public sailings take around an hour and the ticket price goes tow ards ongoing restoration costs. For furt her information, visit www.janegiffor d.org Warkworth and District Museum located in Parry Kauri Park, just south of the town, features changing disp lays including re-created rooms with furniture and household goods of the 1920s, clothing and access ories from the late 1700s to the 1960s, and more. Outdoors you’ll find buil ding s, wagons and farm equipment from the early 1900s including a bushm an’s hut and the old Warkworth jail. Kauri is king at Matakohe’s The Kauri Museum, an award-winni ng attraction on the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour, en route to the scenic Kauri Coast where actors and moving machinery bring pion eering history to life. Notably, the museu m has the largest display of kauri gum in the world, a life sized replica of a two storey boarding house, a pion eer school and the historic Matakohe Post Office with a fascinating coll ecti on of telephones, particularly amazing in the mobile phone age. Visitors between December 7 and January 5 will be treated to a special display of traditional Victorian Christmas dec orations. There are also museums at Wellsfo rd, Mangawhai and Puhoi. Popular with genealogy hunters, the Albertlan d and District Museum tells the story of the 3000 Albertland migrants deli vered to the colony in the early 1860s. The Puhoi Bohemian Museum housed in the historic Convent School recalls the struggle of Bohemians , who settled in Puhoi in 1863.

Arts and crafts are integral to the fabric of the north Rodney region with galleries overlapping with fine dining in cafes, restaurants and bars, sculpture parks matched with win e, and historic and cultural artefact s adorning parks and buildings. The metal art animals at Wellsford, the public toilets at Matakana and the giant sculptures at TeHana point to the drive for beauty and originality. Founder of the famed Morris and James Pottery and Tileworks, Ant hony Morris is among stalwart craftsm en in the region, having establis hed his business on the banks of the Matakana River in 1977. His rece ntly released book Mud and Colour Man – The Morris and James Story cap ture s the journey of building the busines s complete with its lows (like faci ng receivership) and highs (like the boo m time of the 80s) all with the sup port and loyalty of the Matakana commun ity. Travellers can view the works of man y of the region’s other talented artis ts inspired by their surroundings and lifestyle. Jewellery, ceramics, pain ting , photography, sculpture and crafts can be found in a myriad of gall erie s, markets and studios. To combine a scenic stroll in stunning natu ral settings with art appreciation and the chance to take home things you love, consider the likes of Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, on the Kaip ara Coast Highway, or the Brick Bay Win es and Sculpture Trail, near Mataka na. Take time to admire the skill and beauty in carved pou whenua at various sites where they acknowledge and represent the relationship between tangata whenua (the people of the land), their ancestors and their environment or tarangawaewae (pla ce of standing).

Fru it of th e vi n e

As an emerging wine region with a growing reputation, Matakana has more than its fair share of attractive opti ons, for everyone from the casual taster to the wine connoisseur. Local win emaker Mike Reid says visitors will be spoilt for choice of quality boutique wines. “There is a huge focus on qua lity here and our wines are highly craf ted. It’s a very hands-on process and 2010 is looking like one of its bett er vintages.” Older is not always better, says Mike, the best vintage depend s on the quality of the grapes and this year’s whites and roses should make great summer drinking, whi le the reds will be resting in oak for rele ase later in the year. With grape varieties ranging from the mainstream chardonnay, me rlot and pinot gris to the more exotic sangiovese, carmenere and viog nier (v-on-yay) and everything in betwee n, there’s good reason to step out side your comfort zone and try som ething new. Winery owners freq uently offer hospitality and tastings at the cellar door where you’ll encounter a warm welcome and an opportunity to sample various vintages. Drin k in the value-added experience of talk ing to people who know their pro duct, having the chance to try before you buy, getting advice on cell aring and more. Take the time to enjo y the huge range of winery cafe s and restaurants that will demonstrate good pairings of wine with food, often prepared from fresh local ingredie nts. Sign up with wineries online to be kept informed of their latest offe rings and events such as grape stom ping and occasional “bottle you r own ” offers. The Vintry is dedicated to wine from grapes grown within a 16km radius of its premises. For a fruity diversion consider picking up som e of Lothlorien Winery’s famous feijo a wine on Ahuroa Road, near Puh oi.

Note to se lf

Wine tasting protocol is simple: step

one, observe and appreciate the colour; step two, take time to appreciate the smell “the nose”; step three, taste in your mouth. Your taste impressions are as valid as anyone else’s and you either like it or you don’t. (Spit out the wine after tasting, or ensure you have a designated sober driver.)

A road trip north is an invitation to return to the days when sho pping was so much more than a hectic dash to the mall or a stultifying ses sion in front of your computer, combing through the latest auctions online. Townships cater for everything from your most basic needs to some unique gifts and treasures tuck ed away in boutique stores and craft markets, while roadside outlets may provide access to one-off finds and artisans in action. Browsing is wel comed and gives you the chance to see, touch and try things you cou ld not have imagined. The best loca lly handcrafted items rub shoulders with exquisite specialty items sou rced from around the world. Shop own ers and staff know their goods insi de out and enjoy the opportunity to share their knowledge with custom ers. Take Matakana’s Red Letter Day store where Graham and Lind y MacDonald provide a range of high end writing instruments, accessorie s and stationery to customers who share their belief in the artisan cult ure and the power of the written wor d. The range includes discoveries from international stationery fairs and exclusive New Zealand access to stylish brands like Vera Wang stationery, El Casco handmade desk access ories from Spain’s Basque region and acclaimed Jac Zagoory pen and desk art. Meanwhile, Graham produces hyper-realistic pencil drawings, ofte n crafted in store while customers look on. Along with the latest internationa l trends you’ll find a healthy dos e of recycled kiwi heritage and style with the likes of Wellsford Traders and Warkworth’s Mrs Jones going retr o with a focus on kiwiana and item s of restored glory. Roadside stops can also reveal antiques and collecta bles.

Get y ou r fe et wet

New Zealand’s first marine rese rve and one of the world’s mo st established no-take marine env ironments, Goat Island (officially Cape Rodney–Okakari Point Marine Res erve) is an attraction not to mis sed. Just 3.5km from Leigh townsh ip and within an hour and a half of Auckland, the reserve protects 547 hectares of shore and sea that was once severely depleted. Snapper up to a metre in leng th, colourful schools of blue mao mao, goatfish, banded wrasse, parore, spottie, stingrays and dolphin sigh tings can all be part of the voyage. Abo ut 150 species are resident in the area. Remember that wind and swells can impact visibility even when it’s sun ny, so if you are thinking of a trip on the glass bottom boat, phone ahe ad to ensure conditions are suitable for viewing. For those willing to get wet, the reserve represents some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in New Zealand. The environment caters to all levels of experience, with supervised “try dive” options for the uninitiated and night dives possibl e for the adventurous. Bring you r own gear or book with local operators. February is the warmest month but wetsuits are recommended for dive rs in all seasons. Access a variety of habitats, from rocky shores (exposed at low tide ) to deep reefs and caves outside the island and from seaweed forests to sponge gardens, but remember that all marine life is protected incl uding kina (sea urchins) which are in decline. Ashore you can enjoy a 1.52hr return walk from the carpark along the coast across University of Auckland land, passing farmland and through coastal broadleaf fore st remnants and restoration planting .

Note to se lf

New Zealand has 30 marine reserves

but still only 0.3 per cent of the t is protected in this way.

country’s total marine environmen

Reserve rules include no fishing with
