Mahurangi is an ancestress of the Tainui waka and was a renowned tohunga (high priestess). Mahurangi is an ancient name belonging to the rohe (district or tribal boundary) of Ngāti Manuhiri, Te Kawerau ā Maki and Tainui whānui as the descendants of the eponymous ancestor Maki, from whom the name Tāmaki comes. The Mahurangi region stretches from Mangawhai in the north to Takapuna in the south, including NZ’s first nature reserve Te Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier), Te Kawau tumaro o Toi (Kawau Island) and Titritiri Matangi.

We also have leather jackets, boots, dreamcatchers, bags, crafts, clothing and lots more.
The pub has been trading in one form or another since 1879 and like many historical watering holes, it has become something of a museum. The interior walls are lined with photographs and memorabilia from bygone days when bullock teams hauled giant logs from the nearby kauri forests and the roads were made of mud. One of the biggest events on the annual calendar in Puhoi is the Axemen’s Carnival, which is held in the grounds of the pub in January. Many of the events demonstrate the skills that were honed in those early times. Enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple, choose from the excellent bistro menu with daily specials, relax in the historic surroundings and take in the atmosphere.

h t r o w k War Crossroads in time
Nestled along the banks of the meandering Mahurangi River, Warkworth has just celebrated 170 years since the town’s founder, John Anderson Brown, landed in a whale boat in 1853. Originally known as Brown’s Mill, in reference to the sawmill established by Brown on the banks of the river, the town started life as a timber camp. More information on the town’s history can be found at the district museum or in a brightly coloured walking and driving Heritage Trail brochure, produced by Heritage Mahurangi. It presents information about 31 historic buildings and sites including churches, pubs, parks and the weir. All sites are identified on an accompanying map. Warkworth is the commercial hub for the wider Mahurangi area and a gateway to the stunning Matakana coast, the Mahurangi Peninsula and Kawau Island. The retail sector offers a boutique shopping experience and there are numerous cafes and restaurants to choose from. A surprise awaits visitors to Warkworth’s town wharf area after dark, where an installation by Hokimai-anahera Rosieur explores storytelling through light and sound. Thirty-six LED lighting units and eight audio speakers sit among the trees along 160 metres of Mahurangi riverbank across from the wharf, creating simple groupings of sound, song and chromatic display. The title of the installation, Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories, sets the scene for a journey back in time to imagine how the natural world was born, with light and sound expressing the birth of Aotearoa and the growth of ngahere (forest). The au (currents) heard express the mauri of the Mahurangi River, while the age of the tangata whenua is shared through the whakatauki and the haka. Hokimai-anahera Rosieur is of Ngāti Manuhiri, Ngāpuhi and Te Aupōuri descent. years old and about 24 metres high. Measurements taken in 2009 show that it has the largest known girth of any Norfolk Island pine in the world. A mahi toi (artwork) for the Ara-Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway, which
opened in June 2023, forms part of a series of artworks along the road, reflecting the history and values of mana whenua in the area. The two elements are a four-metre carved pou whenua and a stainless steel pouākai giant eagle, now extinct. The artwork is a tribute to Tainui ancestress Reipae who, along with her sister Reitū, travelled on the back of a large pouākai and rested in the area on their way north. The traditional name for the Dome (the peak in the forest) on State Highway 1, just north of Warkworth, is Tohitohi o Rei, in reference to the resting place of Reipae. The smaller carving at the foot of the pou reflects the lives lost on the old stretch of road. The po whenua was designed and crafted by Wyvern Rosieur (Ngāti Manuhiri), while the pouākai is the work of Nathan Hull.

area’s boutique vineyards. Alongside exceptional white wines, including chardonnay, pinot gris and albariño, you’ll find classic reds such as merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, pinotage, pinot noir and sangiovese, all handpicked and tended with care. Several wineries feature charming cellar doors and wine tasting.
Every Saturday morning, you will find a steady stream of visitors heading to the village’s two markets – the picturesque Matakana Village Farmers Market on the river and the original Matakana Market, based in and around the old dairy factory. Between them, the markets offer a diverse array of locally grown produce, artisanal foods, crafts, bric-àbrac and clothing. The Farmers Market, where visitors can sample gourmet treats and indulge in fresh pastries, also has live music and a children’s playground. The market embodies the farm-to-table ethos that has become a hallmark of Matakana’s tourism appeal.
Matakana also boasts a rich cultural scene with art galleries, bespoke cinemas screening both mainstream and independent films, and boutique shops that showcase local creativity.

The coastal surroundings of Matakana are equally captivating, with uncrowded white sandy beaches and forest walks. These natural attractions offer opportunities for swimming, hiking, bird-watching and picnicking, making Matakana a well-rounded destination for the whole family. The growth in tourism has led to the development of a range of accommodation options, including boutique bed and breakfasts and holiday rentals.
Terracotta wayfinders
The pathway between Matakana, Point Wells and Omaha Beach is marked by a series of ceramic wayfinders designed by Nick Charlton and made by the Morris & James Pottery, using local clay. The terracotta columns are inscribed with stylised topographical maps of the area, showing features such as lakes, roads and buildings encountered along the route. Some are paired to hold macrocarpa bench seats, which offer a place to rest and enjoy the views. The 7km shared cycleway/ walkway was built primarily by volunteers, and will soon include a spur to the Matakana Country Park. The wider vision is to create a world class recreation and adventure trail connecting communities from Pūhoi in the south, spanning the Mahurangi region to Mangawhai in the north. It will be a trail that offers walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding paths.

a r a p i a K / d r o f s l l e W The dune freshwater ata, mar lakes of To llsford, east of We mily fa are a great icnics, for p destination and swimming g. water-skiin Strategically located on State Highway 1, Wellsford is a town whose economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, with dairy farming and horticulture being significant contributors. It is about half way between Auckland and Whangarei so the ideal place to break your journey, grab a coffee and enjoy a little retail therapy. Heritage buffs will find a visit to the Albertland Museum well worthwhile. It tells the story of the Albertlanders, the last major organised British settlement to New Zealand. The settlers started arriving in 1862, little knowing the isolation and difficulties they would face in their new homeland. The Kaipara Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, is nearby and offers recreational activities such as fishing and boating. There are also regional parks and forests in the area, including Ātiu Creek Regional Park, gifted to Auckland by Jackie and Pierre Chatelanat nearly 20 years ago. The property has panoramic views of the harbour, and plenty of birdwatching and walking opportunities. The 843-hectare property remains a working farm so
visitors are asked to be respectful and leave gates as they find them. As in all regional parks, dogs are not permitted. A must-do attraction for any visitor who is new to the north is the Kauri Museum in Matakohe. The kauri tree Agathis australis is New Zealand’s largest and most famous native tree, and some incredible stories are woven into its history. Visitors will learn about the Māori of the north eastern Kaipara, European pioneers, foresters and sawmillers, gum diggers and farmers, and of business people, fishers and the families who have
made this area their home. Just a few months ago, a spectacular new attraction was opened – the Forest Walkway which features a forest of tall light box “trees” that visitors pass through after entering the museum. Alive with a natural soundscape of bird song and sounds from the native bush, the walkway takes visitors back in time to the Jurassic era when kauri emerged in Gondwanaland. It introduces the Māori dimension of the story and, in particular, the story of Tane Mahuta and the creation of the world of light.

The Albertland Heritage Museum is dedicated to researching, preserving and exhibiting the rich history of the Albertland community and area. The Albertland settlement was established in the 1860s as part of a government-sponsored immigration scheme. The settlers came primarily from England, Scotland, and other parts of Europe, and they were drawn to New Zealand with the promise of land and a new life. The land they settled is located west of Wellsford, and many Albertland descendants still live and farm in the area. The museum, which is run and staffed by volunteers, features exhibits, artifacts, documents and several nationally significant photographic collections, which can be accessed online. It also holds temporary exhibitions from time-to-time.

Every day feels like a holiday when you are in Mangawhai, especially in summer when the area comes alive with an influx of holidaymakers. Mangawhai Heads beach, in particular, is a favourite spot for swimming, surfing and picnicking. Lifeguards are regularly on patrol over summer, so swim between the flags to keep yourself safe.
There are plenty of things to do away from the water, too. The Mangawhai Coastal Walkway, which starts north of the main beach, is well worth the effort, offering a hike along a rugged coastline with breathtaking views of the ocean, north to Whangarei Heads and offshore islands. If you’re lucky, you might even spot whales and dolphins. It requires a moderate level of fitness and the 9km round trip takes about two to three hours. Another walking option is the Tanekaha Forest, 6km inland from the Heads. Head for the Tanekaha Forest car park, just off King Road, where the various walks are highlighted. Info: www. mangawhaitracks.com/tanekaha-tracks Visitors are welcome at the all-weather Mangawhai Golf Club course, which is a links-style championship course set among natural parkland. hired from the golf shop. One of the most family-friendly attractions is the Mangawhai Activity Zone, or MAZ, on Molesworth Drive. It includes a world class skatepark, playground, pumptrack, picnic facilities, multi sports court, bike and walking tracks, and café. As the population of Mangawhai grows, the distinction between “the Village” and “the Heads” is becoming blurred. Council is building a shared cycle and walking path linking the two locations, and an expanding retail hub is taking
shape in between. The Mangawhai Museum, just north of the causeway, is the place to explore the area’s history, showcasing artefacts and stories from the region’s past, including its Māori heritage and early European settlement. Mangawhai has a charming array of shops, cafes and restaurants where visitors can savour fresh seafood and local cuisine, and its Saturday morning market in Moir Street is not to be missed. Whether it’s enjoying the beaches, exploring the walking trails, or simply relaxing in a tranquil setting, Mangawhai offers a slice of Kiwi paradise.

Waipu
Visitors who detour off State Highway 1 at Waipu will discover a small town full of character and community spirit, and perhaps the faintest hint of a Scottish accent. In the 19th century, a group of Scottish Highlanders, led by their charismatic and visionary leader Norman McLeod, emigrated to New Zealand from Nova Scotia, Canada. Their story of perseverance and determination in search of religious freedom and a better life is celebrated annually with the Waipu Caledonian Games on January 1, a vibrant cultural event featuring Scottish music, dance and sports. The Waipu Museum showcases the history of the Scottish settlers and the local area. Additionally, there’s a heritage trail that takes you through key historic sites, such as the original settlement and the McLeod’s barn. The town is also blessed with stunning coastal landscapes. Langs Beach and Waipu Cove, in particular, offer sandy beaches with safe swimming, surfing and fishing. There are also horse riding opportunities around Waipu, Uretiti and Ruakaka. Just inland are the beautiful Piroa Falls, an ideal place to swim and picnic (sorry, no dogs allowed and there are no facilities).
Underground magic
Waipu Caves Farm Park is a 130-hectare privately owned and operated tourism, adventure and outdoor education park offering cave tours, bush walking and rock climbing. There are also camping and motorhome facilities, set amongst native bush and along a river. A guided glow worm cave tour takes about an hour with several tours each day. The tour is on foot and there are about 30 steps down into cave so a reasonable level fitness is recommended. As well as spectacular chandelier-like stalactites and a galaxy of tiny lights made by the glowworns, visitors will also get to see ancient moa bones. The park is open daily from September to May.

Jewel of the gulf Although out of bounds to visitors, Te Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island is helping to reintroduce bird populations to the mainland. The 3083-hectare island was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1897, making it New Zealand’s first nature reserve. It is one of the last remnants of primeval New Zealand and, as such, is an invaluable refuge for rare and endangered plants, birds and animals. According to the Department
of Conservation, there are about 40 species of rare or endangered birds, 14 reptile and two bat species, and more than 400 native plants flourishing in this pest-free sanctuary. Among many success stories, the beautiful hihi/stitchbird, which would have been extinct if not for this island sanctuary, thrive and are able to be translocated to other pest-free islands. The name translates to resting place of the wind.
