Christmas comes early for foodbank
The foodbank at Hibiscus Coast Community House has been restocked, once again, thanks to the generosity of local residents, businesses and organisations. Community House manager Christine Alesbury says the influx of donated goods came in response to
a story that Hibiscus Matters ran last issue, November 20. The foodbank was low or out of stock on a large number of basic items, with Christmas just around the corner. The problem is not a new one – the paper ran similar stories at this time of year in 2015 and 2016, and each time the
community has answered the call. Stock ran low this time because fewer donations were coming in, culminating in a Christmas shortage. It is that long-term support that is needed, and Christine says there is some good news on that front. She says Countdown Orewa got in touch

as local churches increased their donations, and the Waitemata District Health Board donated a carload of nonperishable food. The Happy Kiwi cafe in Silverdale restocked the freezer with pies and Bayleys Real Estate in Orewa collected enough food to fill a table. Schools have been collecting food too. Dairy Flat School’s PTA took a box in last week and Orewa College staff opted to donate food instead of doing Secret Santa gifts. Gulf Harbour School brought in a large quantity of cereal.

“The Community House provides free breakfast for the kids at Gulf Harbour School daily, so they were returning the favour,” Christine says. However, Community House coordinator Judith Pearce says most of the items have come from individuals who have brought in box loads of food and made cash donations in recent weeks. “It’s been everything we asked for, and more,” Judith says. “Thank you so much to everyone for their kindness and support.”

Guides back under canvas
Local businesses have come forward to assist Orewa Guides to get outdoors this summer, after their camping gear was stolen last month (HM November 20). After seeing Hibiscus Matters’ story, outdoor company Kathmandu got in touch, with a generous offer to kit out the Guides so they can get back in the outdoors. The Warehouse in Silverdale also provided support. Unit team leader Clare Grimwood says they are grateful for the way the community rallied around the Guides. She says the camping gear donated will enable the Guides to plan New Year camps, and Rangers to plan adventures while insurance is sorted out by head office. “Without that, we would have had to borrow from other units, or Orewa Scouts, who have generously offered their equipment,” Clare says. “But as it’s the busiest time of year for camping, most equipment will be in use.” She says Guides will fundraise in the New Year to cover the insurance excess of around $1000. “As a charitable organisation, GirlGuiding NZ has a limited budget and funds spent in this area reduces what can be spent on things such as leader training and programme development,” she says. “The Guides and Brownies were so upset at the loss of their gear they wanted to actively do something to help replace our stolen equipment, and came up with fundraising. At Guides, girls are encouraged to face challenges and learn from experiences.”
Proposal to replace Rodney Changes proposed to electoral boundaries before next year’s general election would significantly alter the Rodney electorate, which includes the Hibiscus Coast. The changes include replacing the name ‘Rodney’, with ‘Whangaparaoa’, as well as substantially altering the boundaries. The proposals, released by the
Representation Commission last month, would see northern Rodney incorporated into Helensville electorate and the new Whangaparaoa electorate extend from Waiwera to Redvale and Okura in the south, as well as including all of Dairy Flat and Coatesville. The adjustments are proposed because of population growth. Without them, continued p3

Freedom campers speak out Recently, after repeated abuse from local residents, Timothy Stewart installed security cameras on the caravan that has been his home for around eight months. Timothy, who describes himself as “a necessity camper”, stays on the Hibiscus Coast to be near his children. One of the spots the watersport enthusiast likes is Orewa Reserve car park, but he says he abides by the No Camping or Sleeping Overnight signs. The caravan he lives in is self-contained, and Timothy says he cleans up other people’s rubbish and dog poo. Despite this, he has been called a liar, had the vehicle egged and dented, and confronted behaviour that he found intimidating. “The Baby Boomers are the worst,” he says. “Young people are more live and let live.” He says people are getting it wrong. “I go elsewhere overnight, but if I return early in the morning, people claim I have been there all night.” He admits to having “run ins” with Auckland Council including recently when he was approached by enforcement officers acting on a complaint made by the public. “I was
legally parked in Victor Eaves Reserve at 3pm having a cup of tea,” he says. Timothy, who has lived in Orewa since 1982, attended meetings on the Freedom Camping bylaw and agrees that rules are needed. “Before the signs went up, there were way too many campervans in the carparks, and tourists were taking advantage and causing problems,” he says. “However, I’m not sure why the rules don’t seem to apply to the articulated trucks that take up 12 spaces in the Orewa carpark overnight!” He says as summer approaches, he has been getting more abuse, and installed cameras so he can provide evidence to Police. Meanwhile 93-year-old George Mclean, who has lived in his campervan for 30 years, says he has had no problem with the locals. But unlike Timothy, he is not happy about the Council restricting overnight camping. George travels widely in a vehicle he describes as “my five star motel” and says he visits the Coast a couple of weeks a year to see family, staying at Orewa and Hatfields Beach. “I don’t see why Council kicked us out of Orewa carpark,” he says. “What
Timothy Stewart says he complies with Freedom Camping restrictions, but still gets abuse from Coast residents.
harm are we doing?” Auckland Council staff are working on new Freedom Camping Bylaw proposals after the first attempt failed. The bylaw, which must be in place by October 2022, aims to enable proactive management and enforcement of freedom camping. Council’s regulatory compliance manager, Steve Pearce, says in the meantime, enforcement will be in place. “This summer we received financial assistance from the Responsible Camping Fund so that we can have additional compliance officers as a
regular presence in Auckland’s popular freedom camping spots, many of which are in Rodney,” he says. “They’ll primarily be educating campers on responsible camping and encouraging them to follow the rules, and will be able to quickly respond to any emerging freedom-camping trends. Our regular compliance teams are also available to support that team and follow-up on more challenging cases. We are careful to make sure that people using locations for legitimate purposes, like parking while enjoying beaches, will not be affected by enforcement action in relation to freedom camping.”
Whangaparāoa to become ‘the new Rodney’ the Rodney electorate would be 14 percent over quota, and growing, the Commission’s report says. The Helensville electorate would gain population of 20,100 from Rodney (including Warkworth and Cape Rodney), 5000 from Northland and 4100 from Upper Harbour. At the same time, it would lose 11,700 around Coatesville to Rodney (proposed Whangaparāoa) and a further 17,800, including the Waitakere Ranges, to New Lynn. Labour list MP Marja Lubeck was due to be confirmed as the Labour candidate for Rodney just days after the Commission’s proposal was released. Instead, her confirmation meeting in
Silverdale on November 24 focused on the implications of the boundaries. Ms Lubeck says she is gutted at the proposals because she has got to know the area since 2017, when she became an MP. She will now have to decide whether to stand in Whangaparaoa or Helensville. “I knew we were over quota, but I thought things might shift a little north, or east, or both. I had no idea they would make such a massive change, splitting Rodney in half,” she says. ““I feel I’ve made inroads into Rodney and people were pleased that they had a Labour representative based there,” she says. Rodney MP Mark Mitchell agrees that
3
it would be tough to see areas he has worked for become part of Helensville but says the changes were inevitable given rapid growth. “We will wait to see what the final boundaries are when they are released next year, but I don’t anticipate a lot of change to what is proposed,” Mr Mitchell says. Chris Penk has already been confirmed as the National Party candidate for Helensville, and Mr Mitchell plans to stand in the proposed Whangaparaoa seat – which he suggests would be better named Hibiscus Coast. The proposals are open for public consultation and the final changes will be adopted next April.
continued from p2
Local government electoral boundaries are completely different, and unaffected by these proposals, so most of the Hibiscus Coast remains within Albany Ward for Auckland Council purposes, while Dairy Flat is in Rodney Ward.

Waiting to be asked
There is an irony to the much vaunted arrival of the new Bus Terminal at the Silverdale Park ‘n’ Ride, as if we all desperately wanted a place to wait for buses that only run every half an hour outside AT’s view of “rush hour”. I am sure most commuters, given a choice, would prefer a more frequent and reliable service than a place to wait for the bus to arrive. Likewise I am sure those who drive to Silverdale would prefer more parking spaces than another building. How about asking us what we want AT? Wendy Cohen, Arkles Bay
Simple signs needed We have all seen it, that three-way road along the peninsula with the middle part lit up saying Flush Median. I bet foreign visitors scratch their heads because any other threeway road on the planet has two parts. A red cross means stay off. A green tick means use it. What part of that can’t we understand? The mind boggles. Allan Weeks, Orewa (abridged)
Boulevard ‘an oasis’ Regarding the letter ‘Ill-conceived Extension’ (HM November 20) opposing any extension to Orewa Boulevard, I would like to make the assertion that Orewa Boulevard plus the Orewa Estuary walk and cycleway would have to be the best moves made locally in recent times. My only criticism with the Boulevard is that it should have wound with a fine grass median and not remained straight – to stop those that have trouble driving at 30km (as you may find in areas on the Gold Coast) plus a bike lane on the seaward side would have been good. As the Hibiscus Coast has changed and so called progress taken over we need more pedestrian friendly areas. The Coast is now full of cars and

Orewa Boulevard needs to become an oasis away from this and become completely pedestrian friendly. If locals haven’t the patience to drive through the Boulevard they know where Centreway Road is, and for visitors this can be clearly signposted. A lot of new people have made Hibiscus Coast their home. I hope not too many have the same opinion as the writer of the ‘Ill-conceived Extension’ letter, and can see the benefit of the Boulevard and its extension to all residents. Arthur Amis, Red Beach (abridged) Editor’s note: The plan, when it is released for consultation, is expected to include a 3.5m wide shared pedestrian walkway/cycleway on the seaward side (HM September 4 and November 20), requested by the local board.

Collecting Christmas cheer Our annual Christmas collection is underway. At this time of year, Hibiscus Matters’ Orewa office turns into a festive hub, providing a collection point for Christmas treats to make Christmas brighter for those who might otherwise struggle to put festive food on the table, or gifts under the tree. We are collecting donations of nonperishable ‘treat’ foods – the kind of things that you would like to find in your Christmas stocking – as well as gift vouchers. Vouchers from local businesses are especially welcome and there are so many options there to delight someone on Christmas Day – how about providing someone with a voucher for a massage, books, dinner at a local restaurant or something practical like petrol? Supermarket vouchers are always welcome, and can be purchased when doing the regular grocery shop.
Since we started the collection last issue, donations are slowly coming in, including the generous donation we always receive from local board member Janet Fitzgerald. With just under two weeks to go, we hope the community, and other local board members and Councillors will get on board. Anyone is welcome to drop off nonperishable food or gift vouchers to Hibiscus Matters’ office at 21 Florence Avenue, Orewa (opposite the AA) during working hours right up until Monday, December 16. Please note we are not able to accept any wrapped, or unwrapped gifts. Everything donated will be given to Whangaparaoa Police for their Christmas Community collection, Hibiscus Coast Community House’s foodbank and Love Soup Hibiscus Coast, which has a free Christmas dinner, and Christmas hampers.
Together, we can help make Christmas Day something to look forward to for all Coasties. Terry Moore, Editor

Local board fails to open workshops to public The Hibiscus representatives on the local board, all four of whom campaigned one way or the other on ending closed confidential workshops, have failed to make this happen at the start of the term. Ideally this needed to be voted on early in the term, and an opportunity came at the first business meeting of the new Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, on November 21. However, the workshop issue was not raised by any of the members. In the meantime, the system remains the same and workshops continue to be held behind closed doors, with no access to the public or media, whether or not the items discussed meet the criteria for confidentiality. The only change is the addition of monthly Community Forums where the public can speak to the board in a more informal way. Members of the Coast People & Penlink First team who were elected to the Hibiscus subdivision of the local board – Gary Brown (chair), Andy Dunn and Leanne Willis – campaigned strongly on ending closed workshops, while the other elected Hibiscus member, Janet Fitzgerald, said during the campaign that she, and Bays member Julia Parfitt, wanted to replace workshops with two public meetings per month. This option has also not progressed any further. The local board appears divided, which is making things difficult.
Mrs Fitzgerald says she and Mrs Parfitt are waiting for the other members to make the first move on open workshops, because they pushed for it hard in the campaign. She says that the Local Board Services department came up with a recommendation for local boards that the work programme continue as it has in the past – it is well known that staff are not in favour of open workshops. “But we don’t have to follow those recommendations,” Mrs Fitzgerald says. It is possible that this plan of work for the year could be voted on at the next business meeting, on December 12, at which time members could choose to raise and vote on options such as opening workshops. Mr Brown says members are looking at alternatives and may talk about it at the next workshop. “This is all pretty new to us and we are still finding our feet,” he says. “We haven’t determined the outcome on workshops yet.”

Crate Day ban back A liquor ban has again been extended over a wide area of the Hibiscus Coast on December 7 and 8. The ban seeks to prevent the disorder associated with Crate Day, which is unofficially celebrated around NZ on the first Saturday in December with gatherings to “share a crate of alcohol”. The temporary liquor ban applies for 48-hours in public areas that include beaches and adjoining parks from Waiwera to Arkles Bay, including Victor Eaves Park, Western Reserve and Centreway Reserve. It was agreed to by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board after a request from Police. This will be the third year that the ban has been put in place. In previous years it has successfully quashed crate day activity on the Coast.

This station at the Silverdale park and ride, the final 90 carparks and associated works, will take until the end of next year to complete.
Mayor visits park and ride The commencement of the last phase of work at the Silverdale park and ride was marked on November 15 with a site visit by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff. Crs John Watson and Wayne Walker also attended, along with Auckland Transport’s acting board chair Wayne Donnelly, Hibiscus & Bays Local Board members Victoria Sharp, Andy Dunn, Janet Fitzgerald and Julia Parfitt and representatives of contractors Wharehine. The final work, which began on October 22, will see construction of a building containing ticket and AT Hop machines, toilets, cycle parking and waiting areas as well as 90 more carparks (taking the total to just over 600 spaces). It is expected to take until December next year to complete – four years after the first sod was turned. In total, the park and ride will cost
$23.4 million. In the Mayor’s speech, he noted that as soon as it was finished, the facility would fill up quickly – something Cr John Watson described as “running fast to stand still”. “We are struggling to keep up with demand,” Cr Watson said. Currently the park and ride is at capacity on weekdays, with overflow parks nearby also full. Local board members Julia Parfitt and Janet Fitzgerald said fast, frequent feeder buses from Gulf Harbour along the peninsula to the park and ride would increase the use of public transport, while cutting down on the number of car parks needed. In response, Mayor Goff noted that the lack of a dedicated bus lane along Whangaparaoa Road would reduce the efficiency of any such service.

Auckland Council is investigating the regular dumping of tyres in a Silverdale reserve.
Marina Freeman Property Manager
Tyre dumping offender sought Around 40 tyres were dumped in a reserve in Silverdale last month, and a local environmentalist who is undertaking pest control in the area suspects it is a repeat offender. The Oxbow Reserve, at 32-36 Hibiscus Coast Highway, runs from the highway over- bridge at Silverdale towards Pak ‘n’ Save. Environmental volunteer Vern Rule, who alerted Auckland Council to the most recent incident, says it is at least the fourth time that quantities of tyres have been dumped there. Vern says he supplied Auckland Council with photos of a suspected offender taken by an infrared camera, including the vehicle’s registration number. That was a year ago. He says it would also have been good to see Auckland Transport (AT) follow up on a request made at that time for an additional bollard on the highway to prevent vehicle access to the reserve. Council’s waste contracts and
compliance manager, Warwick Jaine, says Council has not seen evidence of illegal dumping but is aware of the problem and investigating. “We are also in discussions with AT about installing additional bollards in an effort to prevent vehicles being able to drive into the reserve to dump rubbish,” he says. “We want to thank the person who brought this incident to our attention. We are appealing to the public for assistance if they see anything suspicious.” People who see illegal dumping should contact Council immediately with as much information as possible, including times and dates, descriptions of the offenders, and if known, a vehicle registration. All witness reports of illegal dumping are treated confidentially. People can report dumped material on 09 301 0101, or 0800 NO DUMP, which operates 24/7. Offenders can face fines up to $30,000.

Wash Works Not content with having military serviceman, pub owner and All Blacks captain on his CV, Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford is about to add another career to his name. Wash Works in Silverdale, a carwash centre that can accommodate cars, boats and campervans, is his latest venture. “I’ve lived in the area for 30 years and can see that there is a growing demand for something like this, especially in communities such as Wainui and Dairy Flat where homes are still on tank water,” Wayne says. “There are thousands of new homes being built on the Coast and 40 percent of households have three or more vehicles that need cleaning.” The facility has a double auto wash, brush wash and jet wash, as well as five self-service bays with a maximum height of 3.3 metres. There are eight different cleaning options that can be used individually or in combination with each other. Wayne says Wash Works uses ecofriendly detergents and reuses water in the auto wash. There are four interceptor tanks to filter dirty water that can hold 15,000 to 20,000 litres each, as well as the required retention tank. Wash Works in Silverdale is next door to what used to be the Wade Hotel (now Wade Tavern), which Wayne owned for 20 years before selling

Ōrewa Santa Parade the biggest yet A hot sunny day saw thousands of locals flock to Ōrewa for the Santa Parade on November 23. Organisers from Destination Ōrewa say while it is difficult to determine the number of spectators at the event, it was easily the largest crowd the parade has ever seen. Floats from around 50 community groups and businesses strutted their stuff down Hibiscus Coast Highway, followed by Santa, who ditched his reindeer and sleigh for a trike motorbike. The heat meant that bottled water was almost as popular as the lolly giveaways. Monster Housewash reported giving out 1000 bottles of

water and ran out well before reaching the parade’s end at Ōrewa Reserve. The festivities continued at Ōrewa Surf Sounds where the 11,500-strong crowd was entertained by live music,
games, food and fireworks. Surf Sounds has raised $10,000 for the Ōrewa Surf Lifesaving Club so far, with final calculations still being tallied.

Baked Christmas ham and peaches I hope you have enjoyed the recipes I have offered out of my personal collection and would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I do hope you get to spend it with loved ones and share this lovely baked ham and peaches with them. Ingredients 1 free range ham, size to suit 2 oranges, optional 12-20 fresh cherries, optional Ripe peaches, ½ per person Ham Marinade ½ cup dark rum 1 cup apricot jam ¼ cup maple syrup Peach Marinade 2 Tbsp chilli sauce 2 Tbsp oil 1 Tbsp honey Method: Mix the ham marinade ingredients together and set aside. Remove the outer skin from the ham by gently putting your fingers underneath to loosen it from the fat. Once removed, score the fat into a criss cross pattern or pattern of your choice. If using oranges and cherries, slice oranges and place over the top of the ham, then put a toothpick through the cherry and place a cherry into the middle of each orange slice. Coat all over with the marinade. Cook ham to packet instructions, continually basting the marinade over it. Prepare peaches by cutting in half and removing the pip. Place in a baking dish skin side down. Mix the peach marinade together, brush on and leave until the ham is nearly ready then cook peaches for 30mins on 180°C. When ham is cooked, remove from the oven to rest for 20mins. Wrap fresh garden herbs around the leg bone and tie with ribbon or string. Place on a ham stand if you have one then place the peaches around it. Serve with roast vegetables. Note: Ingredients can be swapped to your taste, such as dark rum for brandy, cloves instead of cherries.

Tree focus for fundraising The Tree of Remembrance is a way to honour special people who cannot be with us at Christmas while supporting the work of hospice in the community. A Tree of Remembrance went up in Farmers in Silverdale Mall on November 14 and, from December 9-23, Harbour Hospice will also have Trees of Remembrance at New World stores in Orewa and Whangaparaoa. Volunteers will invite passers-by to make a donation and write a special message for someone they’ll be thinking about this Christmas, and place it on the tree. The Trees of Remembrance campaign has run for more than 10 years, and donations in this time have raised more than $800,000 for hospice in the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Warkworth Wellsford communities. In addition, Farmers in Silverdale Mall is selling hand-painted Christmas baubles in support of hospice. They

Stressmas is here Christmas is fast approaching and this signals for a lot of business owners a stressful time of the year. Customers want things done before Christmas and many shop owners have long hours and a large amounts of customers and sales prior to the day. Thankfully for most it also eventually signals a break from work where you can relax and re-energise. If you are worried about your business, the period up to Christmas is not the time to make rushed decisions as you are already under stress and may not be in the right frame of mind to make important decisions regarding the state of your business . When you have the break , I find the first week is used to destress, wind down and relax. By the second week you are usually in a better state of mind and this is the time to review what has happened in your business for the past year. Think about what has been good and what has been bad and what needs to be improved. This will help form the basis of your business plan for the next year and though you may not complete this until after the holiday has ended, you will find that as you have completed this at a time when your mind is clear and relaxed, the points you have noted will help improve the business for the coming year . Your accountant can help you with cashflows and budgets which can be loaded on to an accounting programme so that you can monitor the progress during the year. Other things that should be reviewed are employment contracts to ensure that they meet current legislation, insurance requirements for the business, and terms of trade to improve cashflow. Make sure all building compliance requirements are up to date. The key though over the Christmas break is to look after yourself , relax and enjoy the break as you are the most important asset of the business and your health and wellbeing is important to the ultimate success of the business . Have a great Christmas break and prepare for a prosperous New Year. For more columns visit our website: localmatters.co.nz

Coast Christmas – Shop Local feature
Tips for a zero waste Coast Christmas by Trish Allen, Mahurangi Wastebusters Aucklanders throw away a third more rubbish than normal over Christmas and the summer holidays – most of that that is material that could be recycled, such as glass, cans and plastics. Meanwhile, our young people have been demanding climate action, now. Reducing your waste may seem like a small thing, but waste is a major contributor to climate change. We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions doing it imperfectly. Here are some practical ways you can reduce and recycle your waste this holiday season: y Give home-made Christmas presents – bake something, sew something or grow something. y Give experiences rather than things for gifts. y Re-use wrapping paper and ribbons, or wrap presents in re-usable cloth. y Cut up old Christmas cards for tags for presents. y Grow or buy native Christmas trees to plant in the garden later.
y Buy second hand. y Buy a wooden Christmas tree that can be used year after year. y Pass on unwanted gifts or clothing to charity. y Recycle those extra glass or plastic bottles and cans used during the festive season. y When on holiday, find your nearest recycling depot or take your recycling home with you. y Check with Sustainable Coastlines for a holiday beach clean-up near you, or organise your own. y Compost your food scraps or find a composting facility near you, eg sharewaste.org.nz. y Avoid single-use plastic. If you must use disposable cutlery and plates, use ones made of home compostable material like cardboard, bamboo or potato starch. And, of course, put them in the compost, not the landfill, after use. y Don’t waste food – only buy as much as can be consumed. y Try and remember to carry a reusable water bottle and coffee cup with you on holiday.
Christmas shopping habits revealed A survey conducted by online retailer Mighty Ape into shopping habits has revealed that Black Friday has eclipsed Boxing Day as the biggest sales event of the year. Black Friday is a relative newcomer to this country – it originated as sales held in the US following Thanksgiving. Last year, Mighty Ape, based in Millwater, sold almost four times as many products on Black Friday as it did on Boxing Day and it was expecting last week’s Black Friday, on November 29, to be the biggest shopping day in the company’s history. A total of 2962 people, both Mighty Ape customers and others, responded to the shopping habits survey, which was conducted at the end of last December. It was also based on sales data.
More than 80 percent of those surveyed reported doing at least half of their Christmas shopping online. However, while 23 percent got in early, claiming to have started Christmas shopping in October, 32 percent started their gift buying in December and 26 percent bought most of their gifts the week before Christmas. The survey concluded that parents are the most difficult to buy for, with partners next on the list – many respondents claimed their partners “didn’t want anything in particular”. Not surprisingly, children are at the top of the Christmas list, with 32 percent of shoppers spending most of their Christmas budget on the kids.

Market for Christmas giving The Orewa Christmas Twilight Market continues to grow, with organiser Sarah Compain from My Markets saying this year’s market on Friday, December 6, will be the biggest in the event’s six year history – with more stalls, food options and entertainment. A total of 120 stallholders (21 more than last year) will display their wares in and around Orewa Community Centre. The carpark will be filled with food trucks – there are more than double the number of food vendors compared with last year, Sarah says. Stalls include plenty of gift ideas including clothing, perfume, jewellery and crafts, honey and home décor. The Peninsula Singers will be singing carols and other live entertainment includes Levi on Lights Project, singer Ben Deverell and keyboard player Daniel Jenkins.

Ice skating, a Christmas market and live entertainment are among the attractions on offer at A Very Coastie Christmas in Whangaparaoa. The event, which takes place on Sunday, December 8, is organised by Future Whangaparaoa Trust. Its community activator, Sara Mason, says inclusion, diversity and fun are at the heart of the event, which builds on last year’s inaugural Coastie Christmas. She says organisers wanted to bring the community together – local businesses and organisations including Forest & Bird, Whangaparaoa Rotary and Whangaparaoa School will be represented. There will be many free activities, with an artificial ice skating rink, a Christmas market with more than 40 stalls, live entertainment and food. The event takes place in the upper carpark and field of Whangaparaoa College. Almost all activities will be free, but there will be koha buckets for donations towards Whangaparaoa Community Hub. Teenage golfer plays four rounds for charity
Trap library opens
A local teenager is taking part in an event described as “an endurance golf marathon” to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Fifteen-year-old Callum Wall’s first golf club was actually a stick, which he used to fire back the golf balls that ended up in the family’s garden, alongside Gulf Harbour Country Club’s 11th fairway. Free introductory coaching sessions at the club followed and Callum’s enthusiasm for the sport grew. “Mum made a deal with me where if I hit the ball past the 110m sign, she’d buy me a set of clubs,” Callum says. After quite a bit more coaching, he eventually hit the sign and got the clubs – as well as a free set that the Country Club provided and had shortened for him. The Year 11 Wentworth student has now been playing golf for three years and tries to fit in a daily game. His increasing skill is reflected in a handicap drop from 54.4L to 9.5. He was immediately keen to take part when he heard about the Cancer Society’s new fundraiser – The Longest Day. This involves people playing four rounds of golf (72 holes) in a single day, while raising funds. Some will play on the longest day of the year, December 22, but golfers can choose any day in December or January that suits. Callum will tee off on December 10 at Gulf Harbour Country Club at dawn,
Solemn ceremony Callum Wall will spend an entire day playing golf on December 10.
and expects to complete the challenge at dusk, taking around 3.5 hours to play each round. Normally he takes 4h15mins to complete a round. Using a cart instead of walking will speed things up, he says. As he goes, he will be thinking of his grandmother and great grandmother who both died of cancer last year, four weeks apart. “I want to raise funds to help find a cure and support those going through this awful disease, because no one should have to endure what they did,”
Callum says on his fundraising page. Cancer Society Auckland/Northland division’s fundraising assistant Sophie Hancock says the Longest Day is a trial – most of the more than 80 golfers who are currently signed up to take part are in Auckland. She says the success of the idea means it will go nationwide next year. As at November 20, $26,860 had been raised. To support Callum’s Longest Day, search for The Longest Day at www. everydayhero.com/nz/ and select Callum Wall.
By opening a free trap library, Pest Free Hibiscus Coast aims to help residents control possums in their backyards. The traps will be available on loan for six weeks at a time, following a demonstration of how to use them safely. Possums cause significant damage to vegetation and also eat invertebrates such as weta, birds’ eggs and chicks. Project coordinator Jenny Hanwell said volunteers manage possum traps on public land and large private blocks across the area, however there are significant gaps. She says the new library system makes it easy and free for residents to contribute to pest control. The library is for Hibiscus Coast residents only, and by arrangement with Jenny – info: email j.hanwell@forestandbird.org.nz Loved ones were remembered and emergency services thanked as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 17 at a memorial ceremony in Orewa. The commemoration is held annually. Families who have been bereaved and injured in crashes, emergency services personnel and support organisations paid tribute to those affected by crashes at the memorial event, which included the switching on of the Norfolk Pine tree lights on Orewa Beach Reserve in memory of those killed on our roads. This was the sixth time the event has taken place in Orewa and was held thanks to support from Hibiscus Coast Raiders Rugby League and Sports Club and Victim Support. CL

Catch potential skin cancers before they become an issue and get completely doctor-led care at affordable prices. Surf lifeguards, fire fighters and St John paramedics work together to safely bring the ‘patient’ to land.
Coast emergency services team up for Operation Croc For the first time, four Coast emergency services have teamed up to train together. Staff and volunteers from Police, Silverdale St John, Silverdale Fire Service and Ōrewa Surf Lifesaving Club took part in the exercise, called Operation Crocodile, on November 14. The hypothetical scenario saw Daniel the dummy impaled on a tree on Crocodile Island in Ōrewa Estuary, due to a parachuting accident gone wrong. In such a situation, surf lifesavers would transport fire fighters to the island, so they could remove the patient from the tree. St John paramedics would be on hand to see to the patient’s medical needs, and to
transport them to hospital. Police are the overseers of land and maritime search and rescue operations, which is why if an incident like this did occur, people should call Police first. Police then bring in other services. Senior firefighter Jim McLean says the Estuary was an ideal location to stage a scenario that included all four services. “There are instances where our emergency services can’t operate in isolation,” he says. “The training helps ensure that when this does happen, we can work together to remove the patient from their predicament as safely and efficiently as possible.”

Local volunteer honoured Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird stalwart Pauline Smith was recently recognised by the national organisation with a Tī Kōuka Award. The award, which was presented last month, recognises Pauline’s voluntary contribution to conservation over a long period. Among her achievements are establishing the Pest Free Peninsula Project (now known as Pest Free Hibiscus Coast) in 2013. She is co-chair of the Hibiscus Coast Branch of Forest & Bird, as well as working as an art teacher. Pauline says she is truly honoured to receive the award. “Working with a community receptive to pest animal control, restoration planting and creating art has been an amazing experience,” she says. “I am very proud to be able to say that, in my lifetime, I
Forest and Bird chief executive Kevin Hague, with Pauline. Photo, Micheal Richardson
have made a positive difference to the local environment, by providing safe healthy habitat for our native species of flora and fauna. We are at the beginning of an exciting transformative experience, and I now challenge others to contribute towards making the Hibiscus Coast pest animal free.”
Award for outstanding service Hibiscus Coast local coordinator Barbara Hamer received the national Totara Award for outstanding service to Guiding at last month’s Te Tai Tokerau regional GirlGuiding Leader awards. The award is given to a leader who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of girls, young women and/or leaders over a long period. Barbara’s citation referred to her dedication to Guiding for more than 25 years, and her willingness to take on additional activities across the region to develop and mentor leaders, and raise the profile of Guiding on the Hibiscus Coast and North Shore. Her role includes looking after and mentoring leaders, overseeing maintenance of the Orewa and Whangaparaoa Guide halls, stepping in for absent leaders, organising camps and activities and also attending national Guiding forums. She recently became an Outdoor Activity assessor to enable local leaders to complete the training required by GirlGuiding NZ. Barbara is also a regular on various taskforces,
Barbara Hamer
including having been on the district biscuit taskforce for 20 years. Barbara says that the rewards of this work are seeing girls grow in confidence and self-belief, adding that she has made great friendships. Other local award recipients include Guide leader Clare Grimwood and Brownie leader Ann Ramsay, who received the Arataki Award in recognition of exceptional leadership skills; Ranger leader Nicky Clark who received the Te Kaiārahi Award for providing support to others; and Brownie leader Julie Burton who received the Asia Pacific Leadership Award that recognises the achievement of adult leaders.

The first ever sighting of a tomtit in Whangaparaoa has excited local environmentalists. Photo, Jon Paul Hansen
New bird residents welcomed Last month, Hibiscus Coast Forest and Bird ran its seventh annual bird count and Pest Free Hibiscus Coast coordinator Jenny Hanwell says the early findings look exciting. Twenty-six volunteers stepped forward to undertake five minute counts across 17 local sites including Orewa Estuary, Karaka Cove and Shakespear Regional Park. Forest and Bird conduct the survey in partnership with Professor James Dale at Massey University, who will analyse the data, along with Masters student Hayden Pye. While undertaking one of the surveys in Archer’s Bush, Jim was lucky enough to film a male tomtit – the first known sighting of this bird on the peninsula. The stormwater ponds at Millwater’s
Metro Park have also emerged as a hotspot, with local residents recording less common species such as New Zealand dabchick and grey duck, with bar-tailed godwit on the sports fields close by. Jenny says this makes it especially important for dog owners to keep their pets on a lead in this area. She says the survey included several observations of species expanding out of Shakespear Park along the peninsula, including whitehead and bellbird, and early indications suggest that several other birds appear to be increasing their range. “While there is certainly more to be done, this is hugely encouraging for our team of volunteers, and a signal that there is an increased need to expand predator control work on the coast,” Jenny says.

A Wentworth rower’s skill on the water has earned her a four year scholarship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, United States. Year 13 student Parekura ‘PK’ Kellow signed the scholarship documents at Wentworth College on November 14, coinciding with ‘signing day’ in the US where thousands of athletes accept their offers. While moving continents just after finishing school may be intimidating for some, PK could not be more excited. “I’m keen to get over there as soon as I can,” PK says. PK also received an offer from Syracuse University in New York. She was able to visit the two universities earlier this year as part of her recruitment. Spotters from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which encompasses hundreds of US Colleges, keep an eye on athletes – sometimes over a few years – to find talent for American colleges. PK says the strict regulations of the NCAA has taken some getting used to.
“After signing, recruiters from other colleges can’t say more than ‘hello’ to me, and I can’t say how much my scholarship is worth to anyone,” she says. While it was PK’s successful year of rowing competitions with both Wentworth and the North Shore Rowing Club that caught spotters’ attention (HM April 17) she also had to prove her academic ability. She sat two SAT examinations, scoring 1110 – well above the 700 marks required. The signing was a special occasion for Wentworth principal Bruce Tong, who suggested PK should give rowing a go when she was in Year 7. Bruce introduced rowing to the school around 10 years ago with the help of his father, Allan, who rowed in the 1956 Olympics, as well as the first Maadi Cup in 1947. Allan, as well as PK’s mother Parekura Herewini and Wentworth’s Head of College Phillip Lee, also attended the signing. PK’s next goal is to row for New Zealand at the Olympics.

Family Doctors
with Dr Peter Hall peter@familydoctors.nz
A final look into the future This will be my last column for Hibiscus Matters. I’ve been knocking out 400 words just about every month for four years, and frankly I’ve run out of things that are wrong with me so have no more material. My editor has, trustingly, allowed me to traverse a wide range of topics and it seems I’ve had the strongest response when I’ve been open about my own experiences and challenges. This reflects the fact that people want to know their doctor not just as a clinician but as a person. So, thank you to the people who liked what I wrote and told me. Also thank you to the people who didn’t like what I wrote and didn’t tell me. I’m going to get out while the going’s good. Since I’ve reduced my hours at Family Doctors I’ve had time to think. This can be both interesting and dangerous. Interesting in the sense that general practice is changing rapidly and we need a radical rethink about how to respond to this. As I said in a previous column, the GP of the future will not be an individual but a combination of skills and services provided by a team and some technology. Artificial intelligence will enhance patient care and safety. The distinction between doctors and nurses will blur. And dangerous in the sense that I personally want to escape from patterns of clinical practice that are old-fashioned and energy sapping. I did a little time-andmotion study on myself recently and the results were revealing. In a typical week I worked 32 hours (plus eight hours at my other job – so much for going parttime) and out of that time I spent just over 16 hours in face-to-face consultation with a patient. About an hour was spent teaching and supporting junior staff and the rest consisted of emails, phone calls, processing tasks and results and writing prescriptions. This is not necessarily a bad thing because frequently patient enquiries can be dealt with remotely, which is convenient for everybody. But the sheer volume of incoming information is staggering: over 200 test results and 140 reports from specialists and hospitals, all needing to be read and actioned. This is important because a great deal of our funding is based on consult frequency, and of course that’s mainly what patients pay for. But somehow we need to find a way to acknowledge and remunerate the vast amount of work done “off the ball”. Otherwise our good young doctors are going to drown in paperwork and patients are going to lose the connection they value the most. This is Peter’s final column. We thank him for all his contributions – his entertaining and informative writing and his reliable meeting of deadlines over the years. He will be missed.

The inaugural Red Beach School Night Fair, on November 15, attracted a big crowd. Committee leader for the event, Rachelle Hughes, says hosting the fair on a Friday night helped make it a big success. “During last year’s gala prep on a Friday afternoon, the hype and excitement from the students was electric,” Rachelle says. “This year we wanted to bottle that enthusiasm by having a Friday night fair.” The event raised around $20,000 – approximately double the amount raised last year – with the funds going towards upgrading playgrounds. There were long lines for the stalls, which sold classic fair food such as

Chinese paper lanterns will be lit in Moana Reserve as part of the first Beachfront Asian Festival.
Asian flavoured festival Organisers hope that a festival featuring the flavours, sounds and dance of various Asian communities will create a stronger connection between those communities and hospice. The first Beachfront Asian Festival, to be held in Orewa on Saturday, December 7, will include entertainment from Chinese performers, including song and dance, a painter and a traditional Chinese “face changing” artist. There will be food trucks, crafts and activities such as henna art and acupuncture. Harbour Hospice will have a stall to share information and encourage
more people from Asian communities to get involved with the organisation as volunteers. Lanterns strung around Moana Reserve will be lit after sundown. The festival is the work of two members of Harbour Hospice’s advisory board, Des Adams and Sue Chau, who hope to raise more than $10,000 for our local hospice, Hibiscus House in Red Beach. Sue says while the first festival will be small, there is the opportunity to grow the event over time. She hopes it may ultimately include a big lantern festival by the beach. The festival is on at Moana Reserve, Orewa from 3pm-9pm.

Nice bunch grows club
Things are coming up roses for the Hibiscus Coast Garden Club. It’s summer show on November 18 at Whangaparaoa Hall, with 238 entries, was a confident display of the gardening prowess of its membership, which has grown considerably in recent years. The club, which was originally Whangaparaoa Horticultural Society, was founded in 1966. Membership numbers were declining – when it changed its name in 2016 to Hibiscus Coast Garden Club, it had around 60 members. However, that has since grown to almost 100. Vice president Glenys Ferguson says it’s a success story as a community club. The secret could be that it’s a friendly club and “people who like plants are generally nice people”. “We’re just a bunch of people who love our gardens,” she says.

Hibiscus Pétanque hosts national tournament The relocation of the local pétanque club from Stanmore Bay to behind Orewa Bowls Club has reaped rewards, providing enough space for the club to host this month’s national doubles tournament. This is the first time that Hibiscus Pétanque has hosted a national tournament – the new terrain allows for 36 teams to participate in the doubles championship and will also make it possible for the club to host further national and regional tournaments. The doubles event takes place at the club’s new courts in Western Reserve, 214 Hibiscus Coast Highway, on
December 7 and 8. Preliminary rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday morning with the finals played midafternoon on Sunday. Last year’s winners from Bayview Club in Napier are among those to look out for, as well as Mervyn Wilson from Dunedin City club, who has also represented NZ. Mervyn lost the use of the right side of his body after a stroke, but has learned to play with his left hand and often finishes in the top eight. The public is invited to come and watch some of the country’s top players battle it out for the doubles title. Games start at 8.30am and finish around 5pm.

Christmas stress! I love Christmas. It’s always a wonderful time spent with family and friends. It’s just the lead up to it that is stressful! And sometimes when we are stressed our body starts failing us. Our immune system gets run down and annoying things pop out, like mouth ulcers and cold sores for instance. A mouth ulcer is a painful pale coloured sore on the moist inner skin of the mouth. Stress is a major cause of mouth ulcers but other causes include injuries, low vitamin B’s, iron deficiency, as well as some more serious causes. The best way to prevent mouth ulcers is to avoid the triggers. However avoiding these is not always possible. For one, Christmas IS coming! So if you do find yourself with a mouth ulcer or three, the first treatment you’ll need, is to ensure good oral hygiene, like using hot salty water to rinse your mouth after eating. Products such as gels that ease the pain are available from your pharmacy, as well as pastes that stick to the ulcer, protect it from further damage and promote healing Since low Vitamin B’s can be a cause of mouth ulcers, it is worth considering a Vitamin B complex supplement for a short time. It’s also a good idea to check with your local pharmacist and make sure there is nothing sinister to worry about. Cold sores can also be activated by stress. Once caught, the herpes virus lies dormant in your body until activated, often at a most inconvenient moment (Christmas photos!!) and starts by tingling near where the blister is going to occur, typically on the lips. Within a few hours one or more blisters form which are usually very painful. Unfortunately the blister itself is infectious so that means kissing under the mistletoe is at the kissee’s own risk! Once you have had your first cold sore you remain infected, so there is no absolute cure. It can be re-activated by stress, sunburn, colds and flu’, dental work, and being run down.

Many medicines are available at your local pharmacy – from tablets that are taken as soon as warning signs develop, to creams or medicated patches that treat the cold sore with specific antiviral medicine. Some studies have found that taking lysine on a regular basis may help decrease the duration and frequency of cold sores. Remember to take care of yourself leading up to Christmas ...so you can give Santa that kiss under the mistletoe!

Oskar and sister Kelia’s matching 50th cake and present costumes won second place in their age groups in the fancy-dress competition. Lifetime members Sarah Cornelius and Peter Hannent cut the cake.
Silverdale Pony Club celebrates 50th birthday It has been half a century since Betty Buckby and Adrienne Wright started a pony club that included the whole family – and current members are proud to say that the family focus remains. “We are a family club that has always been as much about community as riding and ribbons,” club president Hannah Main says. The Silverdale branch of the North Harbour Club celebrated its 50th birthday with a Funday on November 24, inviting the public and past and present members to enjoy activities, food and the cutting of the anniversary cake. The club began on farmland behind Silverdale Rugby Club, before having to move in 1998 to make way for the
Northern Motorway extension. After two years on a temporary property, the club found a new home on a Dairy Flat farm owned by WWII serviceman and local body politician Jim Holdaway and his wife, Ann. Jim and Ann’s daughter, Sarah Cornelius, a lifetime member of the club, was at the Funday. “I can feel Dad here in spirit today – family was everything to him,” Sarah says. Jim sold the farm to the Council in 2007, hoping it could become a public park. The Rodney Local Board will confer with the public about potential plans for a park early next year. Since merging with the Wainui Club
Eight-year-old Madison Goldsbury’s Cruella de Vil costume placed first in the fancy-dress competition’s off lead rein category.
last year, the Silverdale Club now has 118 members with a few families into their third generation of membership. Long time members recall having to
ride your horse to get to pony club. “I rode my horse from Northcote to Dairy Flat,” Sarah says. “Imagine trying to do that today!”
