Council calculates costs of NAG proposal Higher rates and indiscriminate development could be two of the consequences of a NAG proposal to set-up a standalone Unitary Council in north Rodney, according to a draft report presented to the Rodney Local Board last month. Some of the complexities of decoupling north Rodney from the supercity were outlined at a confidential workshop
on October 27. It’s understood that the final report will be discussed at a Board meeting on Monday November 16, before being presented to Auckland Council’s Governing Body. The Local Government Commission is currently awaiting Council’s response before deciding the critical question of what constitutes the “affected area” – just the northern area defined by
NAG, the whole of Rodney or the whole of Auckland. The draft report said that significant costs could be involved in pursing the NAG proposal. In particular, it referred to the citywide contracts for services such as roads and waste, which would have to be renegotiated. This could involve considerable contract breakage fees and legal costs.
The report said there were significant implications across Council, with potentially significant disruptions to library services, IT applications and systems, building contracts, resource consents, licensing, rates, management of regional parks and iwi relationships. In terms of planning for future growth, the report said it was not possible to

NAG proposal assessed simply split off the provisions in the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan and apply them to north Rodney. “The plan was developed as an integrated management tool for the region and regional provisions needed to be read as a whole,” the report stated. “There is a risk that the very small rating base of any potential North Rodney Unitary Council may result in considerable pressure to allow increased development for primarily fiscal management purposes.” Water and wastewater were cited as examples of where costs outstripped revenue. The report said that Watercare collected $2.7 million annually from its 6000 customers in north Rodney, but the direct cost in terms of the network and treatment plants was $3.2 million annually. If indirect costs for depreciation, overheads and interest on borrowings were included, the figure was more like $11 million annually.
from page 1
“Rodney’s retail water charge to rural areas pre-amalgamation was $3.50 per 1000 litres, where as the cost of water today was $1.40 per 1000 litres.” The report concluded that the NAG proposal generated a lot of uncertainty. It’s understood that both Waiheke and Franklin local boards are watching the NAG process with the view of possibly pursuing their own plans for separation from Auckland. The Commission’s first task following a decision to assess a de-amalgamation will be to make available a copy of the NAG proposal and seek alternative proposals from the public. A minimum of 20 working days will be allowed for these ‘alternatives’ to be submitted, which must deal specifically with the defined ‘affected area’. See ‘We Say’ for Opinion confidential meeting, page 4.

Flag vote nears Anyone who wants to vote in the first referendum on the New Zealand flag has until November 19 to ensure they are correctly enrolled. Voting papers will be sent out from November 20. Enrolment details can be checked at elections. org.nz or by calling 0800 36 76 56. The referendum runs from November 20 until December 11, and will be held by postal vote. Voters will be asked the question, ‘If the New Zealand flag changes, which flag would you prefer?’ They will be asked to rank the five alternative flag designs from one to five, and can rank as many or as few as they wish. The most preferred alternative will go to a second referendum in March next year, where voters will be asked to choose between the current flag and the preferred alternative.
Omaha exercise tests emergency services’ response from page 1
Severe injuries, a cardiac arrest and a missing jet ski driver all had to be dealt with by Omaha lifeguards on Labour Weekend, but thankfully it was only as part of a joint training exercise with Kawau Coastguard to prepare for the new season. Some 24 lifeguards and eight coastguards took part in the simulation, which centred around a supposed collision between a boat and
a jet ski, off rocks at the southern end of Omaha Beach. Drama students from Mahurangi College played the victims, complete with realistic-looking wounds and symptoms. Lifeguards launched four IRBs to treat and transport them, and coastguard vessel Kawau Rescue coordinated a sea search. Meanwhile, along the coast at Mangawhai Heads, more than a dozen lifeguards took part in their own start of season refresher, completing various
rescue, fitness and first aid exercises. Lifeguards will be on patrol at both beaches every weekend and public holiday from now until the end of March. In addition, there will be an extra safety device at Omaha this summer, thanks to the Rodney Health Charitable Trust – an Automated External Defibrillator. The AED device can be accessed and used at any time, should someone suffer a cardiac arrest at the beach, or anywhere near the surf club.

There are already major concerns about the safety of the temporary pedestrian walkway on the Leigh Road bridge in Matakana. One of the most unusual private aquariums that David has seen was in a house in Ponsonby, where the aquarium was three storeys high. It started in the wine cellar on the ground floor and included a spiral staircase.
Fish welfare campaigner wins award There’s a lot about fish that can be learned from Warkworth’s ‘fish guy’ who was recognised nationally by the New Zealand Companion Animal Council last month. David Cooper, who works as the special projects manager and aquatics tutor at Mahurangi Technical Institute, was awarded the Assisi Medal in recognition of his lifelong commitment to fish welfare. His work involves ornamental fish and freshwater fish conservation, particularly native fish. “This is the first time the award has been made to a ‘fish guy’ and the first council award to mention the word ‘conservation’,” David says. “Receiving the medal was particularly pleasing given my oft-repeated mantra that ‘conservation is simply animal welfare on a grand scale’.” David’s fascination with fish started when he was 10 years old, when he kept fish as pets. By the time he was 21, he was working in aquarium stores and 12 years ago he joined the Mahurangi Institute to develop a qualification in aquarium training.
The Certificate in Fin Fish Culture is delivered by correspondence and attracts about 100 students a year. Although cats and dogs are the most popular companion animals in NZ, at 1.678 million, fish are the most numerous. Around 11 per cent of Kiwi households own an average of nine fish. The growing popularity of fish is attributed to the huge rise in apartment living and people renting property. “It’s just not the fish but the whole ecosystem that interests me,” David says. The main fish welfare issues that concern him are insufficient filtration, not feeding the fish properly, keeping inappropriate fish together and inappropriate disposal. “Under the Animal Welfare Act, fish are recognised in the same way as cats and dogs, and a person can be prosecuted for ill-treatment of fish. I’m currently working on a manual for the Royal NZ SPCA on what constitutes cruelty to fish and what to do about it. They frequently get calls on fish welfare issues. “Some of the practises of the past were very cruel, such as keeping
goldfish in a bowl, and disposing of fish inappropriately can become a biosecurity issue, such as in the case of goldfish that are a pest in the wild.” “The fact that fish are normally small, don’t make a noise and can’t be patted could be the reason why people think they don’t feel pain, but there’s a lot of scientific evidence that they do. They can be taught skills and they can remember things.” And if you don’t think they have a personality, think again. David says when he worked at a pet shop in Mt Eden, an emperor snapper called Spud lived in an aquarium in the lunch room. “Spud worked out that if he spat at you while you were eating your lunch, there was a good chance you’d feed him. Also, I had a friend who had a fish that used to like to watch television, particularly Shortland Street. When the programme finished, he’d bang the glass and splash the water around.” The Companion Animal Council is an umbrella organisation for animal welfare groups which funds research, projects and the purchase of equipment.
Matakana bridge funding hits snag The Matakana Coast Trail Trust has been asked to find an additional $100,000 to cover the costs of building a pedestrian/cycle bridge on Leigh Road. The bridge, which will run parallel to the existing road bridge, is expected to cost $580,000. Auckland Transport has agreed to commit $250,000 and the Local Board was asked match that contribution, with the balance of $80,000 to be contributed by the trust. However, the cash-strapped Local Board felt the figure was too high and agreed instead to make a contribution of $150,000. Deputy board chair Steven Garner says the board’s total Local Board Transport Capital Fund for the year was $367,000. “We just felt that to give almost all of that allocation to one project was too much,” he said. “We spoke to the trust and they seem confident that they can fund the shortfall.” Construction was due to start next month and was expected to take six to eight weeks. The trust was unavailable for comment.

A friend indeed There was no sympathy for the local electrician who got to the airport to catch his flight recently, only to find his passport had expired. When he posted of his misfortunes on Facebook, including the extra $1400 it was going to cost to get a passport and rebook his flights, his “friends” were merciless. “So does this mean you can do my job now?” to “You could borrow my passport but you’d have to lose weight and get better looking”.
Early riser We hear the new BP service station in Warkworth was unofficially opened by a woman driver last month, one day ahead of schedule. Unbeknown to staff, she drove in and filled up before the station had actually opened. Bemused staff accepted her $50 even though there till wasn’t operating.
Timing is everything We’re not sure if it’s the power of positive thinking or us being slack, but after four weeks of noticing the Warkworth clock tower doggedly refusing to adapt to Daylight Saving, we finally decided it was time to publish something pithy over the delay – only to see it put forward the very same day.
Highway work Work on safety improvements on State Highway 1 on the Brynderwyn Hill is underway for the summer construction season. The $18m NZ Transport Agency project is on the north side of the Brynderwyns and includes widening the current road, removing tight corners and installing a wire rope barrier to separate north and south bound traffic. There will be some disruption to traffic, with the passing lane at the top of the hill likely to remain closed until late February. The project is expected to be completed by early 2017.

Campervans welcome
Unnecessary confidentiality
T
o its credit, the Rodney Local Board last year took steps to ensure that more of its business was conducted in public forums, where debate and decision-making could be reported in full. This was in response to criticism that too much of its day-to-day business was unnecessarily being discussed in confidential workshops. It is disappointing, therefore, to see the Board hold discussions about the NAG proposal (see story page 1) behind closed doors. As readers of this newspaper will know, NAG has been campaigning against north Rodney’s inclusion in the Auckland supercity since it formed in 2010. NAG believes ratepayers in the north are being short-changed, with the bulk of our rates being spent on city-based projects, predominantly the urban transport system. When the Local Government Commission decided not to assess the NAG proposal for an alternative system of local governance in the north, the group challenged the decision in the High Court and won. The court directed the commission to reconsider the application by first determining the affected area. This has proved to be a long and protracted process. Council officers last month presented a draft report to the Local Board on some of the implications of the NAG proposal. Their report highlighted some of the complexities involved in annexing the north. The information is on public record and no good reason can be given for its presentation as confidential. It is information that is better in the public domain, where it can be properly analysed and considered. Good governance relies on decisionmaking transparency so affected communities are fully informed. Council needs to try harder to make sure this happens, particularly on the NAG debate.
Farm rates on annual budget agenda The lowering of rates for farm and lifestyle properties over 50 hectares will be one of the specific issues consulted on when Auckland Council asks for feedback on its 2016/17 Annual Plan. Other issues will include additional rate remissions for Maori freehold land to better reflect restrictions on use and sale, options for the level of the Uniform Annual General Charge ranging from $350 to $650 per year, and changing the share of the interim transport levy paid by business and residential ratepayers. Fisher & Paykel Washing Machine
Meanwhile, the Governing Body has decided to stick with the status quo for allocating an annual $10 million discretionary fund for capital expenditure to local boards. The funding is for small, locally important asset-based projects. The funds are currently allocated based on 90 per cent population, five per cent land area and five per cent deprivation. An alternative suggestion that the money be allocated on 95 per cent population and five per cent deprivation ratio was lost. Haier Dishwasher HDW12SFE1WH

What a mean-spirited group those Snells Beach residents who are campaigning against people with campervans must be (MM Oct 1). Chas Benest and June Turner should be ashamed of themselves. So what if a car park is being used. If it is ever full, extra vehicles can park along the roadside. The size of the vehicles is irrelevant. You can be pretty certain the vehicles are registered, with current warrants of fitness, unlike many of the aged tractors with marginal brakes that are used to tow large boats up and down the roads in the Snells area. Benest complains that campervans travel in large convoys and take over the majority of the park. Again, why shouldn’t this be happening? The park is in a beautiful situation facing directly to the sea. There are wonderful walking facilities enjoyed by the older couples who are in most cases the owners of these vehicles. After a lifetime of work and raising children why shouldn’t older citizens be allowed to enjoy themselves in their own country when they have the means at last to do just that. Quite obviously many older folk feel more comfortable when like-minded companions join them on an excursion. I note there were no complaints about noise or litter left by the campervanners just the rather spurious claim by Turner that a health

Acquaintances recalled As always Mahurangi Matters was full of fascinating articles. John Hayday, musician, caught my eye (MM Oct 1). What an interesting life he has lived. He and I have a tenuous link from the 1950s when he was on a fishing boat out of Lowestoft and I was a wireless operator at Wick, in the north of Scotland. Back in the day, communication ship-toshore from any distance was by Morse code telegraphy. When John wanted to send birthday greetings to his Mom or such he would hand the message to the wireless operator on his boat (who frequently doubled as one of the boiler attendants who rendered down the cod livers). He would crank up the transmitter and send the telegram to me or one of my colleagues at Wick Radio who, in turn, sent it forward by landline to its destination. Our ‘mission’ was to act as mother hen to the flocks of fishing boats ranging all the way across the North Atlantic and, yes, we did grieve when a boat would fail to control the accumulation of ice on her rigging and her transmission would cease. The cod and herring have gone forever, likewise the Morse code. But the music remains. John made wise choices. John O’Neill, Kaiwaka
Out of touch A recent contribution by our exRodney Councillor, now Auckland Councillor Penny Brown, sorry
5
Webster, with her enthusiastic view of the future of Warkworth (MM Oct 1) shows that she is totally out of touch. Walkways and cycleways are just the sort of ideas councillors dream up to spend our money on, which they can’t afford and don’t have. But the description of the “vibrant hub” really shows lack of vision. Has Penny actually looked at the dogbox apartments being built? The only people who will be prepared to live in these cramped quarters will be those who come from similar shoebox housing overseas. If we jump ahead 20 years, these “apartments” will be ghetto housing. The Unitary Plan will ruin the area as developers turn Warkworth into another Albany. Of course, Penny will be long gone and so will I, so good luck to those left behind. My advice is to get out of the ‘new’ Auckland while you can.

Omaha clean up call
Greg and Paula Jaques (right) with ChargeNet’s chief executive, Steve West, with the new fast charge unit.
Electric car age arrives in Kaiwaka A Kaiwaka business is embracing innovation by hosting the first ChargeNet Electric Vehicle fast charger in New Zealand. Greg and Paula Jaques’ Four Square store now has a Tritium Veefil charging unit in the car park, which allows electric cars to recharge in just 20 minutes, instead of the six to eight hour standard top up time, at a cost of around $10. ChargeNet founder and chief executive Steve West said the Kaiwaka fast charger was the first of 75 rapid charging units that he hoped to install throughout the country over the next three to four years. “We’re backing a network of fast chargers to ensure that NZ electric vehicle owners can travel freely for work or play,” he says. “We want to have them every 80km and Kaiwaka is the very first one ... this is a very big deal.” There is only one other fast charger in the country and that was installed by Northpower in Whangarei
about a year ago. It is free and powers a fleet of taxis in the town. To use the ChargeNet fast charger, drivers need to register with the company to receive a special key tag that activates the unit, with costs charged back to the user. Including plug-in hybrid cars, there are around 700 electric vehicles currently in New Zealand, with most of them located north of Auckland. Paula says she is surprised by the number of locals who have shown an interest already. “It’s really opened my eyes,” she says. “I had no idea so many people owned electric vehicles. There are only going to be more and more of them around, so we thought it was a good thing to do, and ChargeNet has been easy to work with.” The new Kaiwaka Four Square ChargeNet unit was officially opened by Northland MP Winston Peters.
It will be all hands on deck on Saturday November 7 for the annual Omaha Beach Community Clean Up. The event is being organised by Saltwater Eco and the Department of Conservation to mark Conservation Week. About 40 people helped in last year’s clean up, collecting 18 bags of rubbish, mostly plastics and micro plastics. Organiser and marine biologist, Lydia Green, hopes to get as good a response this year. The morning will start with two marine-related talks – one on the impacts of marine debris and the other will be by underwater documentary maker Steve Hathaway. Volunteers will be eligible for discounted surf lessons and a number of raffles have been organised. The clean up starts at the Omaha Beach Surf Lifesaving Club at 11am. All welcome.
We are excited to see the progress of this new home build for one of the youngest clients we have helped so far! At 20 years of age I have purchased my first property - a section in Warkworth - which is awesome! On my parent’s advice I went to Webster Malcolm to help me with the purchase process. There are many details to understand but Les Miller was great to work with. He explained things in a simple, realistic way. He talked me through everything I needed to know. I am really grateful to the team for this and would recommend them as a very approachable firm. - Jess McClean

Shades of green Sometimes it seems that everyone has ‘gone green’. Mining companies, land ‘developers’, factory farmers, even Monsanto, all have sustainability policies and claim varying degrees of green credentials. With increased use of sustainable development language has come wider use of ‘green’ tools, economic instruments such as market-based solutions and environmental offsets to reconcile economic development with the limits of natural resources and sinks. But some observers challenge both the language of sustainable development and the tools used to mitigate the costs of relentless growth. If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, so in our modern capitalist economy, market solutions are offered for almost all environmental problems – even though it’s largely commodification of nature that’s got us in this ecocidal situation in the first place. Therefore, we see pollution and emission trading as remedies to life-threatening contamination of the atmospheric commons. We see the creation of quotas as the solution to overfishing of the ocean commons. Paying contributions to councils or governments is used to offset destruction of forest wilderness or rivers, even though those tools don’t save the rivers, stop the pollution itself or challenge the fundamentally destructive use of the earth’s natural values or the growth paradigm. American ecologist Garrett Hardin justified enclosure and privatisation as a response to what he argued was the ‘tragedy of the commons’, destruction of commonly owned and shared land and other resources through self-interested individuals each taking more than the ‘resource’ could sustain. Even though his views of ‘commoners’ as greedy and unsustainable has been anthropologically disproven, his wider sentiment has provided an ideology for further alienation, privatisation and enclosure of commonly owned resources. It’s no coincidence that land “owners” can degrade land and water almost with impunity because private property is sacrosanct, though those actions on commonly-owned sites would be blamed on the common ownership, not on the damaging practice itself. It’s important to separate ideology from fact, problems from perceptions of their causes, and to challenge environmental damage wherever and however it occurs. The contamination of the atmosphere with pollution and greenhouse gases, Fukushima, destruction of the oceans, reduction of biodiversity and of forests need to be challenged. The loss of aesthetic values in our communities, noise and light pollution, and species habitat destruction are harms common to us all. But so are the patenting of genes, bioprospecting indigenous plants by pharmaceutical companies, privatisation of public utilities and healthcare, and other modern forms of enclosure. But these have parallels in tree clearance, monoculturalism and soil loss on private land, also creating problems we all share. Sustainability discourse has been appropriated by corporate profiteers, harnessed to support unsustainable growth practices. Biological and cultural inheritances are our birthright – human and non-human inhabitants of the planet alike. We have a common risk in environmental destruction and solving many big ecological issues will take an honest, and common, response.

Ida Dunning, local
When TVNZ went looking for someone to feature on their lifestyle show Kiwi Living, a relative of 94-yearold Ida Dunning, of Warkworth, thought her Great Aunt would be the perfect candidate. Six weeks later, with a schedule interrupted when Ida fell and broke her hip, the filming and photography was finished, and the results went to air late last month. But there is a lot more than a bedroom makeover to uncover about Ida, as Jannette Thompson discovered …
I
grew up on a 386-acre sheep and beef farm at Kaipara Flats that my grandfather took up when he arrived from Scotland in 1859. My father, John Wyatt Thomson, gifted fourand-a-half acres of the farm to the Crown in 1967, which is today known as the Thomson Scenic Reserve. At the time, it contained 25 mature kauri and some were six foot in diameter. My grandfather loved the grove and Dad said he couldn’t bear to think of them ever being cut down. The kauri furniture in my bedroom is a reminder of my family’s connection with those magnificent trees. We loved playing in the bush as children, and one day we found a tui’s nest. We blew all the eggs and then strung them up like a necklace. It’s awful to think of it now! We’d go eel fishing and anything that we caught would be boiled up and fed to the hens.
W
hen Dad bought an old Model T Ford, we would come to Warkworth from time-to-time. The roads were very rough so it was always an occasion for celebration when we finally hit the piece of concrete that had been laid near the showgrounds. One of the biggest events on the calendar was the annual swimming carnival, which was held below the old bridge. There would be relay races with teams from Kaipara Flats, Matakana and Warkworth, and I did my 50 yards certificate there. The first school in Kaipara Flats was Pai Kauri, which became Kaipara Flat School when it moved to its current site, closer to the train station. I used to sit next to Gordon Mason who, of course, went on to become Sir Gordon. He could be quite a tease, threatening to poke me with pens and when I made a fuss, the teacher would ask what was wrong with me. Once a year, our family would holiday to Sandspit where we would stay in the motor camp for the summer. It was very much the era of children being ‘seen but not heard’, and I remember when my little sister Jessie was born, matron didn’t allow families to visit at the Warkworth Cottage Hospital. Dad held me up to the window outside my mother’s room
so I could peer in to see my baby sister.
T
udor Collins, who was a great character of Warkworth, was also a friend of my father’s. He had the radio business in town and one day he came out to our house, put on his spiked boots and climbed up a tall kauri tree to install a radio aerial. He did this around the district, giving out radios so that people could ‘try them out’. No doubt, most people bought them when the trial came to an end. Mother cooked on a coal range and the house was lit with kerosene lamps until electricity arrived in 1936. Occasionally we would catch the rail car to Auckland, which went via Helensville. My eldest brother Don served in the fleet air arm during World War II but was killed during a training exercise, off the coast of Maine, when he was just 24 years old. My younger brother Gordon took on the farm, but had to sell after he suffered a stroke. I go back and visit occasionally. Our house has gone, but it is still a lovely property.
“
The children used to refer to the dental clinic as the ‘murder house’
”
After primary school, I attended Warkworth District High School for a year and then I was enrolled at Auckland Girls Grammar and boarded with my aunt. I didn’t care for it much, mainly because my cousin didn’t make me feel very welcome. Many years later she sought me out and apologised for her behaviour, but said she had been jealous of me at the time. My parents valued education and I enjoyed school, and decided to become a school dental nurse. I think I liked the idea of wearing the uniform, which in those days included a white veil, pressed tunic and white stockings. I did two years training in Wellington and then my first posting was to Richmond Road School in Auckland. Later, I was based at Mangonui, Kaitaia and Waiuku, and often it was a sole-charge clinic. The children
used to refer to the dental clinic as the ‘murder house’ and I am sure many children from that era have some quite horrible memories of the dental clinics, but I always tried to make it as painless as possible. We used foot-operated drills and there was a primus so the instruments could be sterilised in boiling water. If children were good, we would let them play with the “silver fairy” – a little ball of mercury, which they would push around in their hands. I had a lot of contact with mercury over those years, but fortunately, haven’t suffered any health consequences. Funnily enough, I still notice people’s teeth today.
W
hen I was in Kaitaia, I was also responsible for the sub-base at Te Hapua. It was the most northerly school clinic in New Zealand, and to get there I would have to ride on the cream lorry to Te Kaeo and then catch a launch, lugging all my equipment along with me. It was a very strict rule that we were only ever allowed to treat children, but one time when I was at Te Hapua, a Maori chap came to the clinic with his lower face swaddled in an emerald scarf. He had an abscess on his tooth that had become infected, and was obviously in a lot of pain. I reluctantly agreed to extract the tooth and was very grateful that it came out in one piece.
I
met my late husband Ronald at a dance in Matakana. The Dunnings were all good at sport and Ronald played cricket for Northland and hockey for NZ, touring to Australia. We have a scrapbook full of the family’s various sporting achievements. We didn’t see much of each other initially, because I was working in Waiuku and he was on his farm, in Leigh Road. We were married in the Kaipara Flats Presbyterian Church and
the reception was held in the hall. My 90th birthday was held in the same hall four years ago. Initially we lived in the lovely old kauri villa on the farm, but as the children started coming along, we decided we needed more land and bought a farm on Golden Stairs Road in Maungaturoto. We had four children – a boy and three daughters.
W
hen I’m reminded of my age, I sometimes find it hard to believe that I am 94 – it seems to have gone by very quickly. I’m thankful for the life I’ve had and I still believe we have the most wonderful country in the world. I feel I’ve lived a blessed life with good health. Over the years I’ve been involved with a number of groups and still belong to the Red Cross and the Women’s section of Warkworth RSA. I still have my driver’s licence, which has to be renewed every two years. Good health is the most precious possession any of us can have and I think it is also important to care for one another, help where you can and enjoy the company of your fellow man.

CHRISTMAS CHEER BEGINS at HOME xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
One of the many great things about living in the Mahurangi district is its diversity. From Puhoi to Mangawhai, we are a cluster of individual villages and hamlets, each different from the next, but sharing a common energy to care for our communities. This manifests itself in many weird and wonderful ways, from tree planting days and beach clean ups to variety concerts and fruit loop fundraisers. The pages of every issue of this paper tell the stories of small groups of people taking time out of their own busy lives to do something good for others or their community. That’s why we know that the annual Mahurangi Matters Christmas Appeal, kindly supported again this year by More FM Rodney, is going to be another stunning success. Through Buy Local Give Local, residents are asked to put a voucher or a present (new or nearnew) under the Christmas Tree for someone who would otherwise
struggle to celebrate the Christmas gift-giving tradition. Donations will be distributed by Homebuilders Family Services in Warkworth and Otamatea Family Services in Maungaturoto to local families in need. Homebuilders coordinator Quentin Jukes says Buy Local, Give Local really catches the true spirit of Christmas. “It’s a beautiful thing when people take the time to think about others and then do something practical about it; that’s really heartwarming,” he says. “We know that if it wasn’t for people donating gifts or supporting Buy Local, Give Local, lots of families wouldn’t have any presents at all on Christmas Day.” Quentin says the brilliant thing about Buy Local Give Local is that when people receive a voucher they are able to choose a present for their child themselves. He thanked all the local businesses who were getting behind the appeal again this year.
Hibiscus Matters editor Terry Moore and More FM DJ Lance Dunn get into the spirit of Christmas, supporting the Buy Local Give Local campaign.
How it works The Christmas tree is located in the Mahurangi Matters office, at 17 Neville Street. Vouchers can be for anything you think might help a family on Christmas Day – fuel, toys, electrical goods, clothes and so on. Grocery vouchers are especially appreciated and New World Warkworth and Jaques Four Square in Kaiwaka are getting right behind the appeal and both businesses have voucher boxes in store. But don’t be afraid to think outside the square and please remember to include gift vouchers suitable for children. If giving a wrapped present, don’t forget to mark
on it whether it is for a man, woman or child. And retailers, it’s important for you to encourage your customers to support this appeal. We’ll print the names of all the stores where vouchers have been purchased as an added incentive. Presents and vouchers must be dropped into the boxes at New World Warkworth, Jaques Four Square in Kaiwaka or Mahurangi Matters by 5pm on December 11. Help spread the Christmas cheer by supporting the Buy Local - Give Local appeal. Thank you.

Matakana living room a magazine winner Council seeks pest feedback Auckland Council is seeking informal feedback on its Regional Pest Management Plan. The plan guides Auckland’s response to managing plants and animal pests, and diseases which have adverse effects on the environment, economy and health. In this initial stage of consultation, Council is seeking to gauge community expectations, and raise awareness of pest controls, plant pests and marine biosecurity. Specific topics are – Bangalow palms, widespread weeds (including moth plant, privet, and others), red-eared slider turtles, feral goats, marine pest management in the Hauraki Gulf, and the future of community pest control. A feedback form is available on Shape Auckland, and will close on November 27. Formal consultation will be held next year.
Cathy Gould’s award-winning living room in Takatu Road.
A Matakana property has won the best living room category in NZ House & Garden magazine’s Interior of the Year awards. Judges praised Cathy Gould’s Takatu Road home – which she describes as an ‘urban barn’ – for her choice of materials, describing them as “authentically and rustically textured”, and for creating a charming and unique space. Cathy and her husband, Roger Donald, built the house four years ago, working with Warkworth architectural designer Martin Harnish and Omaha Builders’ Grant Sutherland. “We started with a bare paddock and built it from scratch,” she says. “It took a year to design and then about
18 months to build. It was a real team effort. We used all local tradesmen and I can highly recommend them all.” Before moving to Takatu Road, Cathy and Roger had a home at Omaha Beach and split their time between there and Auckland, but they will be moving permanently to their Matakana property in January. Locals wanting to take a look at the award-winning living room – not to mention their bedroom, which was highly commended in the same awards – will have the chance to tour this and several other Matakana and Omaha homes when they open their doors for a NZ House & Garden House Tour on March 4 next year.

Welcoming communities I always enjoy the recess weeks from Parliament. It means I get a full week to dedicate to constituent clinics, local events and supporting community groups. I also take the opportunity to invite Ministers to our electorate to meet with groups relevant to their portfolios and to highlight and discuss issues I am working on. It is a great chance to showcase our beautiful part of the country. In the last fortnight, I have hosted Amy Adams, Minister of Justice, Courts, Broadcasting and Communications and Anne Tolley, Minister of Social Development. Minister Adams met with some of our local Police and lawyers to discuss and seek feedback on recent changes in the justice and courts sector. The Minister is also undertaking a review to identify ways to strengthen laws around the prevention of family violence. The review takes a hard look at the way the law prevents and also responds to family violence. This is a comprehensive rethink and provides an opportunity to challenge the way we have thought about family violence to date. On Minister Tolley’s visit, we went to Springboard in Snells Beach. Gary Diprose and his team are inspirational in the way they deliver their programmes, focused on high risk families and youth within our communities. The genuine passion and care they bring to their role encapsulates the spirit and strength of our communities throughout Rodney, from Silverdale in the south to Warkworth in the north. We also visited Work and Income Warkworth. Bev and her staff are getting great results for clients and employers in the area. At the end of September this year there were 433 fewer Rodney people on a benefit compared to a year ago. The commitment from the Work & Income teams at both the Warkworth and Orewa branches play a key part in Rodney people gaining and staying in employment. I meet people every week who have moved to Rodney and when I seek feedback on how they are enjoying their new home, without fail they all comment on how friendly and welcoming our communities are. Each of our towns and villages in Rodney has its own special and unique character but one thing that links them all together is an underlying value of caring and looking out for one another. In a fast-moving modern world, where people can sometimes feel invisible, we shouldn’t underestimate how important this is. People coming to live here with us obviously see and feel it. As this is my last column for the year, I want to take the opportunity to wish you and your family all the best for the upcoming holiday season. Remember to use our stunning beaches, regional parks or maybe even go for a snorkel in one of our two marine reserves.

Wellsford officer on US fire fighting duty Dealing with a bull snake in the cockpit of a helicopter isn’t something you necessarily learn as a volunteer fire fighter in Wellsford. Nonetheless, that was one of the adventures Auckland’s deputy principal rural fire officer, Scott Marchant, was involved in when he spent nearly six weeks in the United States recently, as part of a NZ/ Australian fire fighting contingent. “At first we thought the snake was a rattlesnake because it had the same markings,” Scott says. “It was spotted when the helicopter was in the air. The pilot came down and we pulled the machine to bits trying to find the snake without success. Two days later, when the helicopter was airborne again, the pilot spotted it sunbaking in the glass bowl beneath him. “The wildlife over there was really interesting – we had a mountain lion hanging around at one stage, and saw lots skunks, squirrels, deer and friendly little black bears that loved our peanut butter sandwiches.” Scott was one of 69 volunteers from Australia and NZ sent over to relieve American fire fighters in Washington State, who were battling some of the worst blazes in that country’s history. “NZ, Australia, Canada and the US have an international understanding that if the need arises, they will send in support fire fighters to assist. The last time we went to the US was in 2008.” The Kiwis were deployed to three

forest and plantation pine fires – a 36,000 hectare fire at Chelan, a 30,000ha fire at Kettle Falls and a 200,000ha fire at Okanogan. “When we left, all three fires were contained and they were waiting for the snow to finish the job.” Scott’s first role was to manage the helicopter reconnaissance flying for the incident management teams and approve the landing sites for the 10 to 15 Iroquois and Skycrane helicopters involved. The helicopters can carry up to 10,000-litres of water. During the day, the temperature ranged from 26C to 43C, and at night it dropped to between three and 10 degrees. Scott says one of the things that impressed him was the sheer size of
the areas they were managing, where it was nothing to drive 240kms a day around the perimeter of a fire. “We use the same fire fighting techniques and skills, but over there it is on such a massive scale. It was an awesome experience and I learned a lot about procedures, which is good stuff to bring back to Auckland.” In most cases the causes of the fires were believed to be dry lightning strikes. Scott has been a volunteer in Wellsford for 25 years and was awarded his Gold Star at the brigade’s recent awards night. In his absence, his award was accepted by his eldest son Cameron. “We celebrated my youngest son’s first birthday the day before I flew out. “I absolutely loved the US experience, but it was also good to get home.”

Inland Revenue caller warning Residents are being warned to be on their guard against callers claiming to be from the Inland Revenue. A former businesswoman from Algies Bay says she recently had a phone call from a man who said he was from the IRD and that her company was listed “at the companies office”. As she had sold her business two years previously, she asked him if it was a hoax and hung up, but is worried that other more vulnerable people may fall
for the scam. The IRD said it took all incidents like this very seriously, and would never telephone, email or knock on someone’s door regarding their tax refund. Nor would they ask for credit card details or monetary payment in this way. “Customers should be totally satisfied that they are talking to a genuine Inland Revenue staff member before handing over any personal details.”
Rotary takes on riverbank clean up The young and the not-soyoung pooled resources to collect rubbish from along the banks of the Mahurangi River, around Warkworth, ahead of the Kowhai Festival last month. Among those helping with the annual clean up were, from left, Mick Saunders, Arnold Nicholls and Alistair Pearce, with Mick’s grandchildren Angus and Frances. Several bags of rubbish were collected.

Ashby • Haigh Workman One of Mahurangi’s most established civil engineering firms has changed hands. After 20 years, Colin Ashby has sold to Kerikeri-based firm Haigh Workman, which is jointly owned by partners John Papesch, John McLaren and Phil Workman. Mr Papesch says Ashby Consulting has a good reputation and the name will be retained. “Haigh Workman runs a very similar type of business in the north so Ashby’s is a good fit,” he says. “We have a team of young engineers and are keen to grow the Warkworth business to the next level.” Residential and light commercial engineering will remain the mainstay of firm’s work. Mr Papesch says when people approach a new house project or extension timely advice can be a money saver. For instance, a geo-technical report will identify any underlining sub-surface issues. Sometimes it’s just a matter of shifting the house a few metres to save several thousand dollars, he says. “Navigating through all the Council rules and regulations can be a real challenge, even for extensions. Adding an extra room, for instance, could mean having to increase the size of the wastewater system. Likewise, the rules around impervious surfaces can mean

additional work to manage stormwater. “Looking at these engineering issues early in the project is certainly the best advice we can give people.” Mr Papesch says he is looking forward to getting to know the Mahurangi district better. “We did a 20-lot rural subdivision, just out of Orewa, recently and as a keen scuba diver, I have dived at Goat Island many times, but the area is growing quickly so there has been a lot of change.” Meanwhile, Mr Ashby will continue his business in Christchurch, providing background support in Warkworth when needed. Mr Ashby moved to Christchurch in 2010 when he volunteered with Civil Defence after the first earthquake struck and stayed on to assist with the rebuild.

Matakana Village Books
Kleurglass
After many years of working in libraries and other people’s bookstores, Mary-Liz Corbett has achieved a lifelong ambition with her purchase of The Village Bookshop in Matakana. It seemed the next logical step for Mary-Liz, who has worked at The Women’s Bookshop in Auckland and Wild Swans in Milford, and has also worked in the library supply business, run the ACG Senior College library and organised all the book sales at recent Auckland Writers festivals. “I’ve always wanted to own a bookshop and this is such a lovely one,” she says. “We have a house at Mangawhai and the drive over the hill is really easy; it used to take me over half-an-hour just from Milford to Ponsonby.” Mary-Liz says she won’t be making huge changes to the Matakana shop. “I only bought it because I loved the shop that Tracey (Lawton) had made. It’s such a well-loved bookshop, not just in Matakana but also in Auckland. Many people know it.” However, she is tweaking the name to Matakana Village Books and bringing in computerisation behind the scenes. “Tracey wrote everything down by hand, but I’m going to have all the stock computerised. We’ll have a website – matakanavillagebooks.co.nz – where you can order from the website
Warkworth’s artistic community has expanded with the opening of a gallery, retail outlet and studio dedicated to glass work. Kleurglass is owned by flame work glass artist, jeweller and silversmith Inge Chappell, who was previously based at her home studio in Puhoi. For the past five years, she has used her home base to make and market her distinctive colourful beads and sculptures, and run workshops. “A great proportion of students attending the workshops were from the Warkworth/Matakana area so it made sense to establish myself in the town,” Inge says. She says her new riverside premises, downstairs from Katya Maker boutique in Elizabeth Street, offer the best of both worlds – an easily accessible retail and studio space in a quiet, natural environment for workshops. “It allows people taking workshops a degree of privacy which I think is important. The classes will cover glass bead making, glass sculpture and glass fusing, as well as silver work.” Inge turned to glass bead making as an antidote to the pressures of working in corporate marketing. “I wanted to learn a craft to counterbalance the stress of my corporate life. I started selling what I was making

and buy online. You can either come in and pick it up – click and collect – or get it posted out. Or you can email us and we’ll find books for you.” Mary-Liz will also be producing a regular newsletter, as well as continuing the shop’s loyalty scheme, gift wrapping service and support for local book groups, plus sales of cards, gift wrap and selected toys. She says she is already loving life in Matakana. “Everyone has been so supportive. People pop in and say hello. It’s a lovely place to work.”

to colleagues and it snowballed from there. Most of my sales come through my website and my work is in selected galleries and boutiques. “Glass making is great for anyone who wants a creative experience because it is accessible in a way that something such as glass blowing may not be.” Inge describes her work as a fusion of contemporary and eclectic styles. The bright colours and organic forms used in her work are influenced by culture, travel and nature. “I hope the new studio will encourage a greater appreciation of glass art work. I was born in the Netherlands, where glass art has a long and proud tradition. It is an artform that offers endless possibilities in terms of colour, technique and shape.”
• Handcrafted glass beads, jewellery and art glass. • Hot glass demonstrations. • Glass bead making & silver workshops.

Expect the unexpected Ever heard the saying “most people put more time into planning their holidays than they do their finances”? Think back to the last time you sat down and reviewed your own financial situation, then think back to the last time you planned a holiday or trip away? Which was more fun? My guess is that it would have been the holiday planning, with the excitement and anticipation of what was to come. It rings true for most people that they put things off which they don’t find a pleasant experience, when they know in reality that a good plan for the future would make more sense and bring long-term rewards and gains financially. In my years in the financial world I have seen many different scenarios that can play out and affect people’s lives unexpectedly. I remember the first mortgage I arranged for some clients after I left the bank and became an advisor. A lovely Samoan family had purchased their first home. They settled the purchase, moved in on the Friday and on Saturday, the father was crushed by a forklift at work and died as a result of the injuries. Although a very sad and upsetting situation, I was glad that we had also put in place mortgage protection cover and the mortgage was paid off, leaving his wife and children a debt free home. Then there is the all too common situation of the self-employed person making one disastrous business decision which results in the business failing and the the family suffering the financial stress that goes with that. Or, the really common occurrence now, of one of the breadwinners in the family getting sick and being unable to work and provide an income for the family. All these situations are as horrible as they are real. However, the risk can be reduced or eliminated with a good financial plan. A good plan will cover the ‘what if ’ scenarios and will ensure you get from where you are now to where you want to be. This might be moving from a renting situation to owning your home or maybe buying your second or third property. It may be planning to put money aside for your child’s education or for a world trip. Whatever it is, without a plan and some steps to get you there, it may not ever happen. Plan for where you want to be, know what risks you face and reduce them. Or expect the unexpected!
Making a bid for better business in Warkworth Warkworth is changing – town is going to grow – a lot! A Business Improvement District (BID) is needed to support businesses capitalise on this growth. Here is what you need to know about BIDs: • BIDs work for, and with, businesses to achieve collective prosperity. • Members decide specific activities and priorities. • BIDs are independent and financially sustainable. • They are bound by a constitution and accountable to an elected governance board. • They collaborate with, but do not replicate, services already provided by Council. • Are funded by a targeted levy charged to businesses in a defined area and collected via the property rates bill. 100% of collected funds are transferred back to the BID. • Property owners and business occupiers within the BID boundary get to vote on establishing a BID. • Ballot is conducted by Independent Election Services Ltd March 2016. • More than 25,000 businesses currently represented by BIDs in Auckland. A BID will make Warkworth a more attractive and vital business destination making it a better place to live, with a stronger local economy.

Children at Warkworth Kindergarten have embarked on a one-year partnership with Warkworth District Museum, aimed at deepening their appreciation of local history. The Historic Warkworth Programme was launched last month when the kindergarten visited the museum and each child officially became a ‘friend’ of the museum. They also took the opportunity to plant a totara in Parry Kauri Park, assisted by Kauri Bushmen, Ray Jensen and Merv Bayer. Museum manager Victoria Joule says she’s thrilled with the initiative, which will give the children a better understanding of how life has changed over the years. The partnership means the children can visit for free as often as they like during the year and their families get a discounted rate. “We hope other schools will follow the kindy’s lead,” she says. Head teacher Leonie Hassall says groups of six to eight children will visit the museum every week, with larger groups for special occasions. “The resources at the museum are fantastic and we hope the children, and their families, will gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the Warkworth district’s history by visiting on a regular basis.”
Ashleigh Pringle was happy to give Merv Bayer a helping hand to plant the kindy totara.
I bring a fresh, energetic, practical approach to issues of importance that impact on you.

College heads to Parliament A group of 28 students from Mahurangi College is off to Wellington to meet Prime Minister John Key next week as part of the school’s first trip to Parliament. As well as meeting the PM, the Year 10 pupils will have sessions with local MPs Tracey Martin and Mark Mitchell, watch Question Time in the house and spend time with the Parliamentary Education team to find out first-hand how democracy works. There will also be a side visit to the Gallipoli exhibition, The Scale of Our War, at Te Papa. The three-day trip has come about largely thanks to one student’s burgeoning interest in politics, sparked when she attended a UN Youth New Zealand conference in April. Julia Caulfield, of Rainbows End, Matakana, says the Aotearoa Youth Declaration document made her realise the importance of making sure that as many people as possible learn how government works. “That was the first event I’d attended relating to politics and it really kick-

started a lot of things for me, it was a real eye-opener,” she says. “It’s something that everyone should know about and part of it is knowing what we’re voting for.” After meetings with college staff and Tracey Martin, who is also chair of the Mahurangi College Board of Trustees, the trip to Parliament was devised, and plans put in place for a major Youth Parliament event at the college next July. Tracey is supporting both initiatives and says there are parliamentary resources available to help. “We need to get them interested in how democracy works and how they can change it. We have to make sure they make the connection,” she says. Mahurangi’s head of social studies, Charlotte Gipps, agrees. “The main purpose of the trip is for them to have a notion of being active, informed citizens, of young people having a voice and being engaged in what’s happening,” she says. “It’s our first such trip, but we’re hoping to repeat it next year because we have had such a positive response.”
The new Kowhai Connection bus takes more passengers, is easier to get in and out of and stops at more destinations. In addition to the regularly scheduled stops in each town, you can flag down the bus at other bus stops along the route. It’s a great service to bring our community together through better access and connections.

Rodney Rams ride again at Whangateau The new Rodney Rams clubrooms are rising from the ashes in Whangateau, with the first stage of the rebuild well underway and a temporary bar and kitchen set for summer trading. If all goes to plan, the shell of the new building should be finished and weatherproof by the end of the month, according to club secretary Denise Crimp. With the new tennis, netball and basketball courts already open, a completely renovated toilet block and now the Rams’ rebuild, the Whangateau Reserve sports ground is undergoing a new lease of life. “It’s a lot busier already,” Denise says. The club has constructed a temporary lean-to bar – already open on Thursday and Friday evenings – and put a kitchen in a shipping container, which it hopes will be signed off for commercial use within a couple of weeks. Once that happens, the Rams will begin serving fish and chips and other takeaways, something it used to be known for before its previous headquarters were destroyed by fire in May last year. The 2015/16 Touch Module has just started on Friday evenings and will be running until December 18, and then again from January 15 until March 25, plus the annual Touch Tournament on January 30 (Anniversary Weekend). Denise says it is good to have somewhere club members and players can meet and socialise again, especially now the new

clubroom walls are going up. “With something there that people can see, it will make people aware that it’s happening and make fundraising to complete the building easier,” she says. “It’s better to have at least something up, rather than wait until we’ve raised all the money needed
before starting anything.” Funds for the $180,000 first stage build have come from insurance and local fundraising. The club is looking for ways to come up with the rest of the money needed to fit out and equip the new club premises, including applying for a range of grants.

Fundraising fashion The annual Lions Club of Kowhai Coast fashion parade will be held at Warkworth Bowls, Mill Lane, on Tuesday, November 10. Club members will be modelling clothes from Dorothy’s, of Neville Street, and hats and accessories, courtesy of Not Just Hats. Tickets are $12 and are available from Dorothy’s or Lions Club members, with door sales on the night. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Warkworth/ Wellsford Hospice building project. All welcome; supper included. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
Cancer collectors in pink A Pink Ribbon Day street appeal in Warkworth, Matakana and Snells Beach last month raised $5000 for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. Area coordinator Shona Pickup said 50 local women – plus one man in a pink wig – were out and about collecting on the day and helped make it a great success.

Waving goodbye to Paywave
Back to the future of things
There is nothing worse than losing your wallet. Recently, this happened to a good friend of mine but what he didn’t realise was that his debit card had Paywave on it. Unfortunately, a not-so-honest person got hold of his card and proceeded to shop up large. Paywave makes it easy to shop because Paywave is not for everyone. you don’t need to use your pin or signature. You place your card on the Eftpos box and it accepts payment so long as there is money in the account. A supposed safety feature of the card is that the maximum you can spend in one transaction is $80 – the thief with my friend’s wallet knew this, as he spent $80 in each store and then tried to return items for cash. The banks keep a close eye on the cards and luckily, in this case, they picked up the fact that the user had made five $80 Paywave transactions one after another. The bank contacted my friend, which alerted him to the fact that his wallet was missing. It was very fortunate that the bank picked up on the odd way the card was being used when they did and all funds spent by the thief will be returned. For security reasons, I didn’t want Paywave when it came out and said so when I got my new cards from the bank. However, I later discovered that the bank had ignored my request and sent me a new card which was Paywave activated. I strongly suggest that you all look at your cards and if there is a four-dash radar-like symbol on it, then it has Paywave. On the card somewhere it will say ‘paypass’. I had no idea it was there and checked with various friends and family members who also didn’t know they had it. So it pays to check your cards, but don’t expect your bank to necessarily turn Paywave off at your request. Some banks will allow you to turn it off (a simple process that you can do yourselves via online banking or at a bank branch), while others don’t allow it. And shop owners – if a customer comes in and asks whether you have Paywave, proceed with caution.
Reliving the past and imagining the future is a common human pastime. Today we have adapted with technology to capture the moment, using evolving skills to instantly share selfies via smartphones on social media. But how often do we stop to consider the past to see the future now? What’s trending? The world media took stock of past predictions of the future on October 21 2015, the day envisaged in the 80s sci-fi film Back to the Future II. While flying in food waste-fuelled cars is not yet a reality, other technology featured in the film now exists including unmanned drones, flat screen TVs, video calls, wearable tech and digital payments. So now the future is here, do we notice the things we use every day that are connected to the internet – your smartphone, tablet, game console and even your smart TV and fridge. It’s called the ‘Internet of Things’ and it’s estimated by 2020 there will be 50 billion objects and 7.6 billion people connected to the internet. A common example of how this will work is a fridge that knows more than your doctor and automatically re-stocks your gluten free paleo diet food via online shopping. It’s the merging of minds and machines to make our lives easier and innovate industries like farming. What the # Wikipedia describes the Internet of Things (IoT) as ‘the network of physical objects or “things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.’ bit.ly/1AYkDQA See what others are saying on twitter.com/search via this hashtag #iot or #ioth for more on the internet of things and humans. What we love We all love to save time and do less, if we can rely on a device to know enough to make our lives easier. But as the future approaches, do we know what data we are sharing, where it goes and who owns it and the impact on our future selves? youtube.com/watch?v=TkV1JMvtivA

Mahurangi Matters - November 4, 2015
History
Judy Waters, Warkworth & District Museum www.wwmuseum.orconhosting.net.nz
The diary of Joseph Rowe Gard, an early settler on the Mahurangi River, is considered to be of historic and social importance. Joseph, the son of the High Sheriff of Devon, came to New Zealand in 1855 on the ship Merchantman. He was friends with Governor Gore-Brown and could have stayed in Auckland where he would have mixed with the social elite but chose to take up land near Duck Creek, in Mahurangi. The first purchase was 80 acres. He acquired the adjoining Lot 41 from Mathew Angove, he more than doubled his acreage. The diary tells of his struggles to establish crops. In spite of his best efforts, as well as those of his friend Kensole, to surround all his plantings with ditches, there were frequent incursions, which caused him considerable frustration ... ‘Extremely vexed to find the pigs had again been in the garden and the bullocks also had done much damage to the strawberries.’ Often he would report the visit of a neighbour looking for lost stock, and even his own bullocks, which he used to pull the plough, would abscond and resist capture by swimming the river to remain free. On June 5, 1856, he wrote: ‘Left home in company with Kensole in our dingy (sic) to row to Scotts to catch the steamer for Auckland. Found Angove and Allen also waiting for the Wonga Wonga. June 6th Still at Scotts till 8 o’ clock when she arrived in the

harbour. Reached Auckland at 12. Found lodgings 5 in one bedroom.’ And 10 days later … ‘Started at 10 for Exe Creek per Wonga Wonga. Brought with me 3 turkeys and my dog Spot a gift from Capt Troop. Found Kensole at Scotts with dingy. Home at 7.’ Then followed several days of ditching, ploughing and planting. It is obvious Joseph Gard enjoyed social contact with the other settlers. His sofa would often be used as a bed if stormy weather or distance prevented someone from reaching home. A cooperative spirit prevailed and help was there in times of need. When a storm demolished the end of the newly-built pier at Exe Creek, taking the boat and oars away with the tide, neighbours rallied to help. After rowing the length of the river on both sides, the boat was finally found up Dyer’s Creek. The diary makes note of such milestones in the district as the building of the church at Mahurangi Heads and the arrival of Rev. and Mrs McKinney. At times, it is the understatement of the brief entries that intrigue the reader. Frequent mention was made of visits to the Grange home and then the following … ‘Spoke to Miss J, she accepted, gave her the gnir’. Perhaps the misspelling of ring was a private joke. Joseph married Jane Grange, late of Ayr, Scotland, by Rev. McKinney on 31 March 1858.

Tie-dye t-shirts and family portraits made by children at Mahurangi Kindy will be on sale at Springfest on Saturday.
Springfest kindy fundraiser Fire truck rides and a pet photography competition are just two of the attractions lined up for Mahurangi Kindergarten’s Springfest gala this Saturday, November 7, at Warkworth Primary School’s senior site. Organisers are promising a fun and affordable day out for all ages, with performances from Gravity Dance Studio and Warkworth Primary School Kapa Haka group, plus the annual wheel-a-thon, where the kindy children decorate their bikes or scooters and do 10 sponsored laps of the school courts. Children have also made tie-dye t-shirts and family portraits to sell, and there will be quick fire raffles, games, food, a bouncy castle, plus stalls selling clothes, toys, books, plants and bric-a-brac. Teacher Sarah Clark says this is the
second Springfest fundraiser for what is Warkworth’s only public kindergarten, after a successful launch event in last year. “The community loved our gala last year,” she says. “This is a major fundraising event for us and our committee is working hard to make this day amazing.” Money raised will go towards general kindy funds and improving and maintaining outdoor areas. Mahurangi Kindergarten has also started a Friday morning coffee group for mums and children, which runs from 9.30-11am at 13 Albert Road, and enrolments are open for next year. Vision group questions Unitary Plan zone changes A group of concerned Wellsford residents, calling themselves Vision Wellsford, want Auckland Council to re-think its zoning proposals for Wellsford, as set out in the proposed Unitary Plan. The group held a series of consultation events to garner community feedback on their submission to the plan last month. They believe that the zonings proposed in the plan will stymie development. Group spokesperson Lionel Foster says Council is basing its planning on the fact that nothing much has changed in Wellsford in the past 30 years. “But we know that there are already Aucklanders moving north for the cheaper house prices and choosing to commute to the city,” he says. “Plus, we don’t believe Council is fully factoring in the effects on Wellsford when the new motorway reaches Warkworth. “They say their zoning allows for a further 630 additional household units in the town, but only about 130 of those are economically feasible to develop at present. “We’d like them to consider rezoning land that is easier to develop, say around Bosher Road, which would be more attractive to developers on a return on investment basis. “Also, the land holding that is for sale to the west of the town centre could sustain slightly more intensive development from being mostly

zoned Countryside Living (twohectares minimum lot size) to Large Lot (4000sqm minimum lot size).” The group wants to see the ‘look and feel’ of Rodney Street retained, but believes there is room for retail expansion, including big box retail, in the Local Centre zoning, between Worker and Port Albert Roads. Initially, they see Te Hana as an industrial centre, particularly when the new motorway is extended north from Warkworth, but are reconsidering this based on feedback from landowners. “The motorway is a real ‘unknown’ in the whole plan. In 2009, the NZ Transport Agency conducted initial
investigations and public consultation for an off-line motorway passing west of Warkworth and east of Wellsford, but NZTA planners say they don’t foresee the Warkworth to Wellsford section being built within the life of this Unitary Plan.” Lionel says the town would have benefited from a more robust discussion on the proposed Unity Plan. “We have, however, given our 10 cents worth by facilitating these discussions in the evening meeting and open days held last month. “Unfortunately, there’s very little awareness about what’s proposed and how it will impact on the growth of the town. If we continue to do what

we’ve always done, then we’ll get what we’ve always had, which is ‘no growth’. “The impact of the zone changes won’t be felt until the rates revaluation in 2017. If the land has changed from rural to urban, it’s inevitable that there will be a rate increases, which relate directly to an increase in land value. It then depends on the landowners as to what they want to do with their land, whether this is an advantage or disadvantage.” Rodney Local Board member James Colville says people forget what a thriving and progressive town Wellsford once was. “Warkworth was the poor relation,” he says. “We had seven car dealerships here, a lot of services and even a Farmers store. But the controls on what can and can’t happen in the rural areas have become so prohibitive that nothing can happen. We recently had a major rural processing company interested in relocating to Wellsford which would have brought jobs and prosperity to the town, but there was insufficient industrial land available to accommodate them so they’ve gone elsewhere.” Vision Wellsford has submitted alternative zoning proposals to encourage development away from steep country in favour of more accessible sites. They will submit further evidence on the submission later this month and expect to appear before the Hearings Panel in January.

The magnificent Clydesdales from Helensville are back again this year.
Cattle, calf and lamb competitions give the crowds a chance to get close to farm animals.
The Wellsford School kapa haka group is always a crowd pleaser at the show.
Pirates line-up with Clydesdales for Country Show day Musical pirates, a Mini-Farming Challenge and Clydesdale horses are just a few of the attractions at the Wellsford Country Show on Saturday November 21. Captain Festus McBoyle and his motley pirate crew will be performing songs for the crowd and wandering the Centennial Park showgrounds, while the magnificent Kia Kaha Clydesdales will be providing wagon rides all day. There’s a $100 cash prize for the winner of Kaipara Young Farmers Club’s Mini-Farming Challenge – contestants have to reverse a quad bike and trailer, load some hay, negotiate a few obstacles, carry a bale,
throw a gumboot and run through some tyres as fast as they can. Club vice president Annalyse Blyde says anyone aged 16 or over can take part, and training can be given to non-quad bike riders. Albertland Pony Club will have an In Hand Hack and Pony Mini Show across the road from the rugby fields, while David Oldfield will give a sheep shearing demonstration. There will also be children’s calf and lamb judging, plus a beef cattle competition, which in the past has attracted up to 70 entries. Country show organiser Lynette Gubb says there will be more children’s activities, rides and games
this year, including the ever-popular lolly scramble, plus a wide variety of food and drink, from mussel fritters to feijoa wine and juice. “We’ll have lots of local entertainment, too, and local schools will be joining in,” she says. “We haven’t quite got everything finalised, but we’ll have dancers, singers, guitarists and more.” In addition, the show will feature art displays, craft stalls and trade stands. Gates open at 10am and entry costs $5 for adults and $2 for children aged between five and 14. Info: wellsfordcountryshow.com

It costs nothing to enter the parade, but all floats must be registered with Tony and receive a copy of Auckland

Last year, there were about 20 floats and Tony says he’d like to see at least as many creative efforts again this year. “Every year Wellsford has produced a great variety of floats with some outstanding productions,” he says. The parade will assemble at Wellsford Railway Station from 10am, followed by float judging at 11am, before everyone sets off at 11.30am sharp. The procession will pass along Station Road East, up Matheson Road and down Rodney Street, before returning to the train station for prize giving.

The experience of two banking and mortgage broking careers is behind the new Wellsford business Finance Wise, run by directors Nicci Shirley and Christine Legge. Both women have financial backgrounds and have been involved in local businesses through their partners. Originally from the UK, Nicci worked in domestic and merchant banking before moving to NZ in 1989 where she became a foreign exchange dealer. She and husband Andrew shifted north from Auckland 15 years ago to buy the Omaha Timber Yard at Matakana. In 2007, she went back to finance and was a home lender for Wizard, then Westpac in Warkworth. Christine worked in social welfare before starting a family. Later on, she worked in real estate and banking, and for the past 10 years she has been working in home lending as a mortgage adviser with the local ASB and Westpac branches. Her partner Peter Thomas is a local painting contractor. “As well as our career experience, we both bring a lot of life experience to
our work, which helps us understand that every client has individual needs,” they say. “We work under the umbrella of the NZ Financial Services Group and use top of the market software to assist analysis of each client’s specific set of circumstances. The umbrella also gives us buying power to ensure access to the best lending rates.” Nicci is quick to point out that a poor lending history isn’t the end of the world. “Sometimes it’s just a matter of stepping back and looking at where the money is going and setting up a structured budget. If they can wait a few months and demonstrate that they can meet savings and repayment targets, then it is possible to get people back to a clean sheet.” Christine says although they work with most major banks, they have the independence to seek funds outside mainstream lenders. “We can also assess a loan quickly and effectively, and our fees are paid by the lenders, not the home buyer.”
Home loan options out there Christine and Nicci say the opportunities for first home buyers have never been better, but too many people are unaware of what is available. They say, for instance, that the Welcome Home Loan scheme is designed for buyers who can afford regular repayments, but have trouble saving for a large deposit. Under the scheme, first home buyers only need a 10 per cent deposit, which for many first home buyers could be covered by their KiwiSaver early withdrawal, rather than the 20 per cent normally required by lenders. The loan is taken out with normal lenders such as banks and credit unions, but is underwritten by Housing NZ. Rodney is now classed as Auckland, which means that applicants can purchase a home valued up to $550,000 under the scheme. In Northland, the amount is only $350,000. Christine says that as well as the scheme, first home buyers who have contributed to KiwiSaver for at least three years, can access the HomeStart grant. “Putting together a lending scenario for someone who thought they would never be able to own their own home is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of our work.”

ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER? Bowlers from Leigh, Mangawhai, Waipu and Warkworth enjoying the Wellsford club facilities at the recent Open Triples season opening tournament.
Bowlers seek new recruits Would-be bowlers are being urged to take to the greens and have a go at the sport this summer in Wellsford. The town’s bowling club celebrates its 65th anniversary this year and is holding a membership drive to boost numbers. Match committee organiser Reg Phillips says Wellsford is a friendly, active club and they’d like to give more people the chance to enjoy the experience. “It’s a family club, a happy club, and we’re encouraging new members young or old,” he says. At its peak, the club had a membership of around 200, but this is now closer to 60. Reg says the best time to go along to get a feel for the place – and for the game itself – is during ‘rollups’, casual playing and practice days on Wednesdays and Saturdays. “We have people in the club who have
been coaches so they are on hand to teach new bowlers everything they need to know.” From January, Wellsford will run a social Twilight Bowl and Sausage Sizzle every Tuesday evening, from 5.30pm, for about six weeks. The club also hosts and takes part in tournaments with clubs from the Rodney area down to the North Shore, such as the recent Open Triples Tournament to launch the 2015-16 season, with teams from Leigh, Mangawhai, Waipu and Warkworth. Reg says members take great pride in the club, which has a large, airy upstairs meeting room and bar area overlooking the greens with views north to Whangarei, as well as seating and gardens sheltering the playing area.

Budget busting ideas for a summer holiday at home
Not everyone can get away during the summer, but living in a beautiful and popular holiday destination certainly makes it easier to have a ‘staycation’ at home that doesn’t have to cost the earth. There are a wide range of activities dotted throughout the district that either cost nothing or are budget-friendly. The best starting point is to act like a tourist and pay a visit to the nearest information centre to get some ideas – Warkworth iSite in Baxter Street, Matakana Information Centre in the village cinema foyer or Mangawhai Information Centre on Molesworth Drive. Olivia Austin, regional tourism coordinator for Matakana Coast Tourism at the Warkworth iSite, says the region’s best free resource is undoubtedly the huge number of top class beaches here and the variety of scenic walks, both of which easily rival anywhere else in New Zealand. New Zealand’s national trail, Te Araroa, passes through the region, which means that keen trampers can potentially walk between Puhoi and Mangawhai and beyond, via the Dome Forest, Mt Tamahunga and Pakiri Beach. On a much smaller scale, but still with
Nothing beats the beach!
spectacular views, there’s Highfield Garden Reserve between Snells Beach and Algies Bay, which has the added attraction of its own herd of donkeys. Olivia also recommends local museums as a great way to entertain the kids and learn something new about the region’s past for a reasonable entrance fee – there’s the Warkworth & District Museum in Tudor Collins Drive, the new Mangawhai Museum on Molesworth Drive, the Albertland
Museum in Wellsford or the Bohemian Museum in Puhoi, which opens from Christmas to Easter. A little further north is the award-winning Kauri Museum at Matakohe. Morris & James Pottery in Matakana runs free tours of its pottery workshop every day at 11.30am, showing how the pots are made and decorated. The pottery is on the route of another increasingly popular free local resource, the Matakana Cycleway and Walkway,
an off-road track that runs from the village to Omaha and Point Wells. There are also plenty of parks, playgrounds and picnic spots throughout the district, including the new community playground on the riverbank in Matakana and the old cement works and swimming hole off Wilson Road in Warkworth. Auckland regional park campsites There are 44 campgrounds in Auckland regional parks, ranging from beach front to back country. Facilities can be basic and access isn’t always down a paved road, but Council controls some of the most scenic and exclusive camping spots around. Camping passes cost $65 per adult per year ($14 per child), but there are restrictions on when and where these can be used, especially in peak season.

For many New Zealand families, the summer holiday means only one thing – it’s time to dig the tent out of the garage, pack the car to bursting point and go camping. And because it’s such a popular and well established Kiwi holiday habit, there is a tremendous amount of choice when it comes to deciding where to stay, with countless well-equipped and cared for campsites to choose from. It’s not even necessary to travel far – the old maxim ‘a change is as good as a rest’ often comes into play during the summer break, with a surprising number of locals taking time out at the holiday parks in Sandspit, Whangateau or Martins Bay, or pitching their tents at one of Auckland’s regional parks. Three of the most popular options are: Department of Conservation campsites DOC manages more than 200 camps throughout the country, from fully serviced sites with a wide range of amenities to basic spots that require full selfsufficiency. Fees range from $15 per person, per night down to free of charge. The closest local DOC sites are Motuora (Island) Campsite and Uretiti Beach, north of Waipu.

an awful risk in cutting corners.” Any products that have expired or are banned should be disposed of safely. “Chemicals mustn’t just be flushed away, taken to the dump or added to household rubbish bins. People should check the packaging to see if there are instructions for disposal or ask their garden centre or hardware store. Otherwise, they can ask their local council where they can dispose of any chemical waste or old containers.” Mr McMillan says some safety practices apply to all types of hazardous substance and chemicals: • Don’t mix substances together. • Check the expiry date before using. • Keep products away from eyes and skin, and wear the recommended protective gear. • Clean up any spills quickly. • Store substances upright, tightly sealed in their original containers and in a locked cupboard away from any sources of heat or ignition. RODNEY SEPTIC TANK CLEANING
The summer weather is often a time for tackling a gardening or renovation project, firing up the barbeque, doing a spring clean or filling up the pool or spa. But all of these activities can involve risks if they’re not undertaken thoughtfully. Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) hazardous substances compliance manager, Ray McMillan, says EPA data shows ‘home’ can be a dangerous place. Almost half of all cases where people needed to be hospitalised because of exposure to hazardous substances happened at home. Mr McMillan says that unless people read product labels, they are often unaware that ‘natural’, ‘organic’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ products can still cause harm. “These products may not be obviously hazardous, but the label will have special instructions to warn of risks and tell you how to stay safe. In fact, for any substance used around the house or garden, reading the label and doing what it says is a no-brainer – and there’s

Police are reminding people to keep their properties and equipment safe from thieves this summer. Far North Area Commander Inspector Wendy Robilliard says the cannabis growing season will soon be upon us and criminals involved in growing the drugs often target quad bikes, chain saws, lawn mowers, tools and petrol cans, or any items that can be carried. Insp. Robilliard says thieves have also stolen outboard motors and boating equipment such as rods and reels, petrol cans and fishing gear from boats when they are parked on properties
and even when they are moored at sea. “Make sure you lock your sheds and garages,” she says. “Another problem is people leaving their cars unlocked on driveways, sometimes with valuables in view. “Thieves will canvas every property until they see an opportunity. They are also very quick, so don’t make it easy for them.” As well as locking houses, sheds, garages and cars, Insp. Robilliard suggests people think about installing alarms and CCTV, and having dogs on the property to warn off potential thieves.
SNAP it for safety Operation SNAP (Serial Number Action Partnership) is an initiative of the New Zealand Police, aimed at making it harder for criminals to sell stolen goods. The initiative helps to protect property in a number of ways. The SNAP website allows users to enter and maintain details of all of their important possessions or assets. They can then access this asset list from anywhere, anytime. If items are stolen, they can instantly retrieve their asset list details, and forward these to Police and their insurance company. Sun exposure risk reminder By Dr Andrew MacGill, Kowhai Surgery
With summer just around the corner, it is worth reminding everyone of the dangers of excessive sun exposure. There are three main types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the least common, but the most deadly, melanoma. All of us have some risk of growing a melanoma, but the following are factors that will increase your risk: • If you have a lot of moles. However, most moles will never cause a problem. • If your skin is fair or you sunburn easily. • If you have blonde or red hair or light-coloured eyes. • If you have had melanoma or another type of skin cancer in the past. • If you have a history of sunburn and blistering, especially in childhood and adolescence. • If you work outdoors, use sunbeds or are actively engaged in seeking a tan. • If a close relative (mother, father, sibling or child) has been diagnosed with melanoma. • If you have a weakened immune system such as those who’ve undergone organ transplants. • If you are male and over 50. So what are the things you can do
to lower your risk of dying from a melanoma? Avoid excessive sun exposure and get your skin checked by a doctor once a year and check your own skin once a month. If you find anything that is new or changing, you should show your doctor. The trick is to catch them early. I see a lot of melanomas on patients backs and calves that could have been detected earlier if they used the bathroom mirror to have a look. If you are outdoors (even on cloudy days) then ‘slip slop slap’ is key. Apply sunblock 30 minutes before going out and every two hours after this. Sunblock should be SPF15 or higher, be broad spectrum (blocks UVA and UVB) and have The Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal of recommendation. Of particular note, children under six months shouldn’t have sun-block applied. The only option here is to protect them from sun exposure. The good news is that if a melanoma is detected early and removed over 90 per cent are curable. Melanoma that has spread until recently was incurable. However, over the last few years there have been very exciting and promising new treatments based around stimulating your own immunity to fight the cancer cells (immunotherapy). For the first time, we now have hope that this devastating disease may be treatable.

Bargain trail at Snells Beach
The programme will include Black Grace founder Neil Ieremia’s popular short work, Minoi. Photo, Simon Wilson.
NZ dance group makes rare local appearance Black Grace, one of New Zealand’s best known and most successful contemporary dance companies, will perform at Matakana and Waipu this month. The internationally-acclaimed group will be at Waipu’s Celtic Barn on Thursday November 12 and Matakana Hall on Friday November 13 as part of the group’s 20 for 20 tour – 20 shows in 20 towns for just $20 a ticket at the door. The regional tour is celebrating
Black Grace’s 20th anniversary by bringing its powerful and innovative performances to people and places that wouldn’t normally have access to them. Organisers say the shows will be relaxed and informal, but with the company’s trademark energy and extreme physicality still to the fore. “This is Black Grace unplugged, returning to their touring roots to honour New Zealand, their people, their past and their future.” Audiences will see some of Black
Grace’s most popular and iconic short works choreographed by the group’s founder, Neil Ieremia, including Minoi, Method and Human Language, as well as brand new works by original company members Sean MacDonald and Siaosi Mulipola. Tickets for both the Waipu and Matakana performances will be available from 6.30pm on the door – there is no pre-booking – and the shows start at 7.30pm. Info: blackgrace.co.nz
If you love a bargain and appreciate art, Snells Beach is the place to be on Saturday November 14, when The Great Snells Garage Sale & Art Trail takes place. Local residents will be selling their unwanted stuff throughout the community from 7am until 10am, then an Arts Festival and Craft Market will run at Snells Beach Primary School, from 10am until 2pm. Anyone wanting to hold a garage sale as part of the event can register to be on The Great Snells Trail map, which will be available in local shops and businesses next week, and from Snells Beach Primary School on the day. The event is being run as the main community fundraiser for the primary school, and is building on a similar event launched last year. Organiser Kylie Tippett says the event is a departure from the traditional school gala, with more of a focus on arts and crafts at the school, with a wide variety of food. Pupils have each produced art for exhibition and sale, which will be sold in a silent auction, and every class has learnt a dance to perform. Funds raised will go towards improving a variety of facilities and resources in and around the school. Info: The Great Snells Trail, Saturday November 14. Santa’s Parade in safe hands Warkworth’s annual Santa Parade is all set to go ahead this year, after a successful search for a new project leader. Following a recent appeal by the Warkworth Area Business Association in Mahurangi Matters, Sarah Loveridge has volunteered to take over running the event on Saturday December 5. Sarah grew up in Warkworth and has recently moved back here after living and working in Auckland. Previous Santa Parade manager Nicola Jones says Sarah has a background in project management and will be ideal for the role. “I’m still going to do all the pre-set up arrangements and Sarah will do the onthe-day management, so together we’ll get things into a good place,” she says. Local businesses are being urged to start thinking about ideas for their floats, as

The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks In her latest novel, Pulitzer prize winner Geraldine Brooks sets out to uncover the story of the legendary King David. The story is narrated by Natan, David’s closest advisor, who prophesied that David would be king and would have a lineage that would last generations. Natan’s predictions come to fruition and David establishes his kingdom at Ir David (Jerusalem) but the road to get there is via much hardship. Brooks portrays David as brave, charismatic and fair, and a talented songwriter, singer and harpist, but also a flawed man who through his own greed, deliberately causes the death of Uriah, his best general. However, Natan also prophesied David’s downfall for ordering the death of Uriah. David will pay dearly with the loss of four lives that are closest to him and will have to fight off his sons as they try to take over his throne. Brooks has told a powerful story that is a compelling read about a great man. This book will appeal to those who love history and family intrigue.
Small House Living by Catherine Foster This is a collection of cool-looking, space-efficient homes all less than 90sqm – less than half the size of the average new house in New Zealand. The book includes many amazing ideas that could be incorporated into baches, cribs, urban housing, renovations or new builds. In the 70sqm Black House from Queenstown Architects and the Warrander Studio of Christchurch, the staircases double as drawers, the incredible 40sqm Hut on Sleds in Coromandel, by Crosson Architects, has cantilevered windows that close it off when no-one is there. The House on Sleds is also removable in case of coastal erosion. Catherine Foster shows how clever and inventive NZ architects are in building these small but intricately-designed homes. This type of design will be essential in the development of larger urban centres.

Summer produce Spring and early summer has to be the most exciting time of the year, especially if you are a gardener or a cook. I never tire of admiring the trees as I drive through the local countryside. I am particularly fond of the colour of the noble oak and when I see them begin to leaf up I know that winter is over. When it comes to the kitchen, what joy it is to have available in plentiful supply locally grown asparagus, lettuce that tastes like lettuce, beans, courgettes, peas, cucumber and snow peas, to name just a few. The first of the new potatoes are starting to appear as well. So what to make for a stylish dinner in the short window when some of these ingredients are at their best? Here’s my suggestion …
Flambéed Chicken with Asparagus 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 tbsp seasoned plain flour 2 tbsps olive oil knob of butter 3 shallots, finely chopped
Serves 4
4 tbsp brandy or Cognac 300ml chicken stock 16 asparagus spears, halved 4 tbsp crème fraîche 1 tbsp chopped tarragon
Dust the chicken in the flour. Heat the oil and butter in a large saute pan with a lid, add the chicken, fry on all sides until a nice brown. Add the shallots, then fry for about 2 mins until they start to soften. Pour in the brandy, carefully ignite, then stand well back until the flames have died down. Stir in the stock and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat, cover, then cook for 15 mins until the chicken is just tender. Add the asparagus to the sauce. Cover, then cook for 5 mins more until tender. Stir in the crème fraîche and tarragon, and warm through. Season to taste. Serve with fresh new potatoes.

Parliamentarians soak up festival flavour Three Members of Parliament got a soaking for charity at the Kowhai Festival Huge Day Out in Warkworth last month. Former Labour leader David Cunliffe, New Zealand First MP Tracey Martin and Rodney MP Mark Mitchell all gamely stepped up to the Omaha Surf Lifesaving Club dunk tank, attracting
fierce bidding from punters keen to tip icy buckets of water over them – and raising at least $500 for the club coffers. Grey skies and a chilly wind failed to deter the crowds from attending the Flower Power-themed event, with thousands of people filling the streets and riverbank in the town. Headline
band Brendan Thomas & The Vibes proved to be a huge draw card, giving an impromptu performance on the small stage near the riverside Garden Bar, as well as their full set on the main stage in Baxter Street. Ten lucky people who bought special Kowhai Festival T-shirts each won $50 for wearing them on the day.
Fun, fashion and fundraising came together at Matakana Cinemas last month, when more than 70 women attended a special screening of a film celebrating 94-year-old New York style icon Iris Apfel. The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser included exclusive pre-movie cocktails at The Vintry, plus a “seriously good” raffle, and raised $935 for the charity. Organiser Kathy Hunter has collected money for the foundation for the last two years, but this year decided to do something a little different. She says the Iris documentary was an ideal choice, as it encouraged women to dress up and celebrate their individuality and life itself, and she hopes to run a similar event next year. “This was an opportunity to celebrate, in the best way possible, those we love who have left us – and also to try and ensure that others, including ourselves, stick around. It was a great night and a fantastic movie on many levels.”

Mahurangi passes bowel screening test Residents from the wider Mahurangi area are getting a pat on the back from the Waitemata District Health Board’s BowelScreening team, with well over half of all eligible residents doing the test. Almost 60 per cent of eligible people from the Mahurangi Matters readership area have returned a completed test kit. Of these, 494 people tested positive and were referred for a colonoscopy. A total of 29 people in the area found out they had bowel cancer through taking part in the bowel screening pilot. BowelScreening Programme manager Gaye Tozer says the participation figure is pleasing, but she is urging others to take the opportunity to do the test, too. “Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in New Zealand and the second highest cause of cancer death,” she says. The Government has extended the bowel screening pilot until the end of 2017 and the results will help decide whether a national programme will be rolled out. People aged between 50 and 74 living in the Waitemata DHB area will receive a third test kit through the mail when it’s their turn to participate. “We are encouraging people living in the wider Mahurangi area to do the third test, as regular bowel screening can help find early signs of cancer. No screening test is 100 per cent accurate, which is why it is important to do the test every two years while the pilot is running, even if your previous results have been normal.” More than 6000 people have received

Briefs Defibrillators 24/7 Secure defibrillator cabinets have been installed at the Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving Club and outside Lee & Hart Pharmacy in Warkworth. The cabinets come with a three-digit combination lock. When required, members of the public can phone 111 and ask for an ambulance. The ambulance will be despatched and they will be given the code to open the cabinet and extract the AED-defibrillator to treat the patient with cardiac arrest, prior to the arrival of the ambulance. The cabinets mean the defibrillators are available 24/7. The first cabinet in the district was installed outside the Mahurangi East Library in Hamatama Road, Snells Beach, earlier this year. The Rodney Health Charitable Trust has provided the cabinets through the auspices of St John in Warkworth.

a colonoscopy through the BowelScreening pilot so far and 255 people have been found to have bowel cancer as a result of taking part. “The exciting thing is nearly 70 per cent of these cancers have been found at an early stage when treatment can be more successful. Also, 4057 people have had polyps
removed which may have developed into cancer over time, so the bowel screening test is preventing cancer as well as finding it.” Info: 0800 924 432 or visit bowelscreeningwaitemata.co.nz See your doctor if you have any bowel symptoms that concern you even if your screening test was clear.

Safety for children on net The safe use of texting and messaging on social media sites, such as Facebook and Instagram, was discussed at a meeting in Wellsford last week. Wellsford Senior Constable Shaz Glen gave a talk on cyber safety and social media safety to parents and students at Wellsford School. “It’s important for children to learn the safe use of texting,” she said. “We need kids to think before they press the ‘send’ button, ‘Would I be happy for my parents, grandparents, caregivers or teachers to read this message?’” Shaz gave examples of cyberbullying and what could be done to stop it. “There are four different types of bystanders to cyberbullying – the Assistants who join in on bullying and help the bully; the Reinforcers who laugh and encourage the bully but don’t personally attack the target; the Outsiders who don’t get involved but see it happen; and the Defenders who try to stop the
bullying on behalf of the target.” Shaz advised children to be careful when accepting friend requests on social media sites and not to accept them unless they were from someone they know. “We need to educate our kids about the long-lasting effects that cyberbullying has and to encourage more kids to be Defenders.” Tips for parents • Encourage open communication with your kids regarding social media. Check regularly what they are posting. Be their friend on Facebook. • Phones and devices should be left in a pot or safe place in the kitchen from 8pm onwards. Turn the internet off. • Remember everything you put on the internet is there forever. Resources for parents can be found at netsafe.org.nz

Eugene Sims, Warkworth Natural Therapies www.wnt.co.nz
Childhood fevers It may be ‘Rugby World Cup Fever’ that is on most people’s radars at present but childhood fevers are a rather interesting subject, too. As a natural medicine practitioner, I see lots of children with fevers and while natural treatments are often very appropriate, we must understand the risk factors as some conditions can be fatal if untreated. Some conditions need urgent medical treatment. Children can deteriorate very quickly, but thankfully can also recover quickly. A fever can occur during teething, following exposure to a toxin or as the normal response of a child’s immune system to a virus or bacterial infection. Most healthy children can tolerate a fever well. A digital thermometer is the best type to use to get an accurate temperature reading. The temperature under the armpit will be about 0.5-1 degree Celsius below the core body temperature. Around 37ºC is normal, 3838.9°C is a mild fever, 39-39.9°C is a high fever, 40°C or higher is a very high fever. Natural medicine can treat all aspects of fever, but if there are any dangerous factors, immediate medical treatment will be advised. I suggest that with any fever, it is good practice to have the child seen ASAP by a health professional to give them the best outcome. Otherwise straight to the doctor with: • A baby under three months with a fever – even a mild one • A baby between three and six months with a fever over 39 ºC • For any children with a very high fever (over 40ºC) For older children, it’s important to look at other symptoms and how unwell the child seems. Some mild diseases produce very high fevers and severe illnesses can produce mild fever. Also, if the following are present with the fever then meningitis could be possible so they need to be seen by a doctor immediately – hallucinations, vomiting, a stiff neck (they’re unable to put their chin on their chest or have pain when moving their neck forward), a skin rash. Home treatment Most fevers last only three to four days, and a mild fever may not need any treatment at all. • Give them plenty of fluids to drink – little and often. This helps cool them down and replaces fluids lost through sweating. Water is best, or breast milk for a breastfed baby. • Dress them in lightweight clothes and use lighter bedding. Keep the room temperature normal. • Put cool cloths on your child’s face, arms and neck to help them cool down. Don’t use any rapid cooling methods that make your child shiver. The muscle movement in shivering will actually raise your child’s temperature and can make their fever worse. • • Check your child during the night. If they don’t seem to improve or you’re at all worried, take them to your doctor. There are a handful of homoeopathic remedies that are brilliant for treating fevers and also help teething coughs and colds.
Red Cross book records history From World War I to recovery programmes in Christchurch, Red Cross has been there to help generations of Kiwis when they’ve needed it most. The NZ Red Cross celebrated a century of care this year and to mark the milestone, they have launched a book reflecting on their history. Written by social historian Professor Margaret Tennant, Across the Street, Across the World: A History of the Red Cross in New Zealand 1915-2015
highlights the wide reach of Red Cross activities through time. It covers the broad range of humanitarian assistance at home, overseas and in the Pacific, as part of the world’s oldest and most trusted humanitarian organisation. Even today, more than 11,000 people, most of whom are volunteers, help Red Cross provide services such as meals on wheels, first aid education, disaster relief, refugee resettlement and reuniting separated families. Twenty-six teams made up of any combination of three bowlers competed, representing clubs from Wellsford, Orewa, Mairangi Bay, Mahurangi East, Mt Wellington and Omaha. The Warkworth team of Stewart Macdonald (skip), Bill Lequesne and Betty Browne walked away the winners on the day. Tournament organiser John Hurdley was happy with the day’s fundraising, which amounted to just over $1000. The money will be donated to the Warkworth Wellsford Hospice building fund. “The bowlers had a great day and that’s the most we’ve ever raised so it was a very successful day on both counts,” he said. Celebrating achievement World champions and many other high achievers across the sporting spectrum have dominated the list of finalists for the 2015 Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards. Shaun Johnson, ex-Hibiscus Coast Raiders Rugby League and Orewa College, highlights a list of local talent from the Rodney and Hibiscus Coast areas who are among the finalists. Shaun is a finalist in the Sportsman of the Year category and faces stiff competition from featured finalists including All Black James Parsons, Tall Blacks Isaac Fotu and Corey Webster, All White Bill Tuiloma and tennis star Michael Venus. Portia Bing, born in Helensville, is a finalist in the Local Sportswoman of the Year, as is Abbie Palmer, who lives in Waipu, but is eligible as she plays for the North Shore Squash Club. Portia is the New Zealand champion in long jump, 200m and 100m hurdles, while Abbie was second at the Australian Junior Open, and achieved a silver medal at the women’s doubles and bronze in the missed doubles at the youth commonwealth games. This year we are extending our awards by introducing Northcross Physiotherapy Local Sportsman and Sportswoman categories. This enables us to acknowledge not only those who have already succeeded on the international stage, but those who are on their way to being the best in New Zealand. The Hibiscus Coast Athletics Club and president David Kayes are both being recognised in the awards. David is receiving a Sport Acknowledgement award for his contribution to taking the club out of recess, and setting it up with new programmes, a new location and new members. Finalist in Coach of the Year is Jason Pocock, of the Black Finns who are two times world champions. Jason is the deputy principal at Whangaparaoa College, while fellow workmate in the P.E. department, Anna Marie Keighley, is a finalist in Referee of the Year for her role as an international football referee, officiating the semi-final of the Women’s World Cup in Canada. Finally, in Junior Sportsman of the Year is Vinu Vijayyakumaran, of Orewa College. He was second in the Taekwondo Junior World Championships, in his class. All category winners and the supreme award winner will be announced at the awards dinner on November 6. The dinner will also see two inductees into the Legends of Harbour Hall of Fame. Football referee’s service awarded Music restores hall
Retired Warkworth football referee Alan Boniface was recognised by the Auckland Football Federation last month when he was presented with the Les Coffman Lifetime Achievement Award. Alan’s refereeing career started in 1956 when he was stationed in Cyprus, doing his national service with the Royal Air Force. “I wasn’t good enough to play so the Sergeant stuck a whistle in my hand and told me to referee,” he says. “I must have done okay because I became a regular after that. Some of the matches were like mini-internationals, with games against the Army, Navy and Turkish and Greek teams, as well as huge crowds attending.” Returning to civilian life in 1958, Alan played on Saturdays and refereed on Sundays until an injury in 1966 forced him to quit playing altogether. Moving to NZ in 1970 did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm for the game and he rose in the ranks, refereeing regional and national matches, including the Rothmans League which saw him travelling all over NZ. He retired from active refereeing in 1987 after some 1200 games, and was appointed a match inspector. He has been coaching, training and assessing referees ever since. “My final game was at Shoesmith Domain. All White coach John Adshead brought up an All White/Auckland XI to play against Warkworth. A huge crowd turned up and it was a really great day.” Alan says the game has become a lot faster and more skilful, and referees have to be fit to keep up. “If the ref is doing his job properly, he’ll run nearly 13kms during a game.” Alan says that while abuse from the sidelines wasn’t ever an issue for him, he’s seen potentially good referees give the game away because of it.

“New referees normally start in the junior grades and sometimes, that’s where the abuse from parents on the sidelines is the worst. It’s a shame because we lose young referees.” Highlights in his refereeing career included trips to England and Fiji for courses. “It was a marvellous experience just to be involved in the game, and getting to know the players and coaches.” Alan was awarded the QSM for services to the community, which recognised his involvement with several Rodney charitable trusts, Camp Bentzon Youth Trust, and his service to football refereeing.

At the final Warkworth Music concert of the year last month, president Beverley Wicks presented the Warkworth Town Hall Restoration Committee with a cheque for $12,000, which was accepted by Illona Rodgers. The music society pledged $5000 to the hall restoration project at the start of the year and this amount was boosted by a fundraising concert held in May, which raised a further $7000. The final concert in the 2015 programme was Buddhist Rain, which included poetry readings by Bill Manhire. It was held in the Old Masonic Hall.

English cricket all-rounder shares coaching advice Rodney cricket will have the benefit of bowling all rounder Luke Beaven, of England, this season. Luke, who normally plays for Reigate in Surrey, is a professional cricket coach whose services have been contracted by the Kaipara Flats Cricket Club this summer. This is his first visit to NZ and he is looking forward to seeing some of the country. Kaipara’s junior club coordinator Kevin Forde says the major benefit of having a visiting professional coach for a season is that it lifts the standard of coaching, as well as promoting the game. “Luke will be coaching in primary schools and colleges, and will be trying to drum up player numbers for the local clubs,” Kevin says. “He will also take a lead role in coaching our Saturday junior and youth sides, as well as our Premier men’s side.” Kaipara tries to have a professional coach based at the club every season. The initiative is funded through sponsorship and fundraising, plus grants from Northland Cricket and Rodney Cricket. “We’re particularly grateful for the sponsorship of Mason Containers, LJ Hooker, Beds’R’Us, Buckton and Associates, Northland Valuers and Norma Jean Cruises.” Kevin says Kaipara is one of the strongest clubs in the Northland competition.
Visiting English cricketer Luke Beaven at Matakana School on his first coaching assignment in NZ. Soaking up the advice are, from left, Regan Grice, Oscar Kirk and Sasha Jamieson.
“We have a huge number of players with varying levels of representative cricket to their credit and we made it to the national club championships in
the 2012/13 season. “We were the top club side in the Northern Districts region and this ranked us that season in the top six
