Park ‘n’ ride misses World Cup deadline Auckland Transport has shelved plans to build a partial park ‘n’ ride of 100 spaces in Silverdale in time for the Rugby World Cup, in favour of completing the full, 500 space facility with signalised intersection, pedestrian crossing and new bus station at a later stage. A spokesperson says delays in securing resource consent for the project means the opportunity to provide parking in time for the Rugby World Cup has passed. He said Auckland Transport lodged a resource consent application with Auckland Council in February, on a non-notified basis. However, an independent planning commissioner decided that it should be partially notified. That has now been done with the closing date for

ACE Aotearoa co-chair Wendel Richardson says when families learn together, everyone benefits. “There are many examples of how models of family learning enhance the wellbeing of families and communities,” she says. “Some studies have shown that families benefit financially when parents learn alongside their children. “For over 70 years, Playcentres have led the way in providing unique whānau learning opportunities. Funding cuts to centres would be a great step backwards for both early childhood and community education.” Tomarata Playcentre spokesperson Talia Watson-Walker says Playcentre fulfils many roles in the Tomarata community. About 30 children attend the twice-weekly sessions, representing about 16 families. “Playcentre offers a way for parents to get to know one another in a small but fairly remote rural community,” she says. “Every term we get-together to plan ahead and tailor what the children do according to their ages and needs.” Talia says the centre was built by the community and enjoys strong community support, but there would be a limit to how much the centre could rely on additional fundraising. The Play In will be held from 8.30am to 12.30pm. The report can be read at www.taskforce.ece.govt.nz/
Hill Street delay unacceptable The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) decision to defer work on the Hill Street intersection, in Warkworth, for at least 12 months, will be the main topic of discussion at the Warkworth Area Liaison Group meeting on August 3. Cochairman Bruce Mason says NZTA has not committed to a definite start date and the project, therefore, is likely to be pushed out further. Group member Colin Greenslade, who has been closely associated in ongoing discussions with NZTA and Council representatives over a number of years, says that the increased costs cited by NZTA were likely to escalate even further before any ground was broken to start the project. “I am concerned that at Ministerial level there is a belief that the problem will be fixed with the proposed Puhoi to Wellsford motorway extension and that Hill Street will not need to be upgraded,” he says. “What is ignored is the fact that even with the new motorway all traffic accessing the eastern area of our ward needs to go through this intersection as it does now. Nothing changes in that regard.” The group meets in the downstairs (Mill Lane) room of the Warkworth RSA at 7pm. The meetings are an open forum which members of the public are welcome to attend.

families. She says if funding cuts go ahead, then the North Shore Playcentre Association, which auspices Warkworth, Matakana and Tomarata will be bankrupt in two years. “Once upon a time you could run a centre on cake stalls, but the reality is that today’s compliance costs makes that impossible,” she says. “We’re not just talking about Council rates – there’s water bills, insurance, health & safety and fire compliance rules to meet, to name just a few. “The Warkworth centre has been operating for 40 years, but it will close if these recommendations are implemented. I get angry when I think of all those children and parents who will miss out on the Playcentre experience.” Meilla says the taskforce set out a list of what makes for good ECE and Playcentre ticked all the boxes. “The only short-coming, as far they could identify, was that Playcentre is parent-led rather than teacher-led. But involving parents is what makes Playcentre unique. It’s an holistic way of looking at families, educating both children and parents.” ACE Aotearoa agrees. The umbrella organisation for the Adult and Community Education Sector actively promotes the concept of families learning together because of the huge benefits it brings for families and communities.

First Auckland Council rates bill hits mailboxes Auckland Council’s first combined rates notices were due to be delivered to ratepayers in the former Rodney District Council area on Friday July 29. The new-look notice combines the former Auckland Regional Council rates and former local council rates into one Auckland Council rates bill. Council is required by legislation to establish a Transition Rate for 2011/12, which means all targeted rates and other charges on the former local and regional council rates bills will be merged into one, with the exception of wastewater rates. The transition rate has been set at 3.94 percent.
Rates provide 53 percent of Council’s income with the rest coming from grants, subsidies, development and financial contributions, user charges and fees. Some of Council’s funding priorities this year include: yy Transforming Wynyard Quarter and Queens Wharf yy Protecting and enhancing Auckland’s harbours, beaches, islands and coastline yy A public library for Wellsford yy A new park at Millwater subdivision in Silverdale yy Construction of a rock breakwater on the eastern side of the Gulf Harbour boat ramp.
yy Huapai Sports Field upgrade Former Rodney District Council ratepayers will continue to pay their rates in four instalments. However, a 1.5 percent discount is applied on rates if they are paid in full by the due date of the first instalment. Former Rodney ratepayers will continue to pay Watercare (a separate Auckland Council Controlled Organisation) for their water and part of their wastewater service, and Auckland Council for their fixed wastewater charge. The wastewater utility charge will continue to appear on the rates bill and is subject to a standard annual increase of 4.5 percent.
Police briefs Property warning Residents are being encouraged to ensure their property is properly secured after a spate of thefts in the Warkworth area last month. Early on July 20 a car thief ditched the stolen vehicle he was driving in the Warkworth ANZ carpark and stole a neighbouring vehicle. The offender was wearing a brown vest and a beanie. Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information relevant to the incident. Meanwhile, Police continue to investigate the theft of a 1400 litre petrol tank stolen from Kaipara Flats airfield on July 13. The tanker contained around 800 litres of fuel. It was last seen on Woodcocks road travelling towards State Highway 16. A Rodney Area Cub spokesperson says the club is not interested in the petrol, but would like the tank returned. There have also been reports of thieves in TramCar Bay who were interrupted while stealing a dinghy and two sets of oars. One set of oars was later recovered from the beach.
Missing boat A reward is being offered for information that leads to the recovery of a 14ft fibreglass boat, stolen from a driveway at 65 Percy Street on Monday, June 25, around 4am. The boat, including a 70hp Yamaha outboard, is a distinctive orange colour with a black fish bin bolted on its bow. Anyone who saw the boat leaving Warkworth is asked to phone 021 721 133 or Police on 425 8109.
Thieves apprehended Warkworth Police have apprehended two people in Warkworth in connection with a car stolen from South Auckland. Police believe the pair drove to Whangarei where they stole another vehicle from a car yard. From there they each drove to Kaiwaka and failed to pay for their petrol at the local gas station. Two males in their early 20s will appear in the Warkworth District Court on August 17.

Park ‘n’ ride decision sensible
The announcement that Auckland Transport is shelving plans to build a Clayton’s park ‘n’ ride in Silverdale (see story page 1), in favour a 500 space facility with signalised intersection, pedestrian crossing and new bus station, is good news for Warkworth and Hibiscus Coast commuters. Although it means further delays of possibly up to a year, the proposed 100 car parking facility, designed to meet Rugby World Cup demands, was never going to work. In the end it would have been a waste of ratepayers money and would have left most drivers frustrated. Usage of the Albany park ‘n’ ride exceeded expectations almost from day one and has already been increased to 550 spaces with further expansion planned. The criticism that is levelled at it most frequently is that “it’s always full”. So it is good to see Auckland Transport learning a lesson from this experience. The real question is will 500 spaces be enough? The NZ Transport Agency says there are 16,500 vehicles travelling between Warkworth and Puhoi every day – how many of these are commuting to jobs in Auckland is unclear. But the park ‘n’ ride will also service the estimated 7000 daily commuters coming off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula so you don’t have to be a mathematician to work out that 500 carparks will soon be utilised. A well serviced park ‘n’ ride could make carpooling a practical and convenient option for some, and it could also mean a bus service from Warkworth, maybe event Wellsford, could be viable. Whatever the outcomes are, the message for Auckland Transport is clear – don’t let this project slip any further behind. Petrol is getting more expensive by the day and people in the north are entitled to some public transport options.
FEEDBACK
Letters can be sent to editor@localmatters.co.nz or PO Box 701, Warkworth
Traffic one of several concerns Some people are apparently upset that not everyone is in favour of the proposed retirement village in Warkworth. One person suggested that people “should be thanking the developers for their foresighted and inspirational plans — not criticising them.” His letter stated that: “The developers have put their money – $30 million – where their mouth is to give Warkworth a complex to be proud of...” With this in mind, perhaps I shouldn’t mention my concerns about the increased number of cars (86+?) in the downtown area that this development
could bring, the stress on the sewerage system, the removal of six of the oaks trees (two of which listed for removal are apparently on the Notable Trees Schedule), the possible loss by severe trimming of the other oaks, plus the impact of a road through the oaks, the reputation we would acquire of being a town of oldies, or scariest of all the 80 bay underground car park with 100’s of tons of buildings above it located so close to our river. The writer is also happy about the “reinstatement” of the old inn, which involves removing the western annex. I assume this would be done so the
road could be widened, which would mean the loss of the beautiful old pepper tree. So if someone is nice enough to spend $30 million dollars on Warkworth, and I assume is planning to make a profit, I get the impression from some people’s letters that we should not question, think about possible drawbacks, or even whether we like the idea. One of the writers mentions the “negativity” of those people who oppose the retirement village in the middle of town, but since when does an inquiring mind constitute “negativity”? Good time to kill introduced cherry tree Research tracks It’s pretty pink flowers are viewed by invasive risk to native bush. Northland Regional Council member Tony Davies-Colley says Taiwan cherry (Prunus campanulata) was imported from east Asia in the 1960s as an ornamental species to brighten gardens in late winter. “Unfortunately, in a relatively short time it has become invasive and is visible, especially at this time of year, throughout the north, but especially in and close to built-up areas. “It is changing the character of native bush areas and is also a weed in public reserve areas and rampant on roadsides.” Although it’s illegal for people to sell, propagate or distribute Taiwan cherry in Northland, its seeds are still being widely spread by birds. Cr Davies-Colley says Taiwan cherry typically starts to sport its characteristic pink, bell-shaped flowers at this time of year so it can be easily identified and taken care of. Large trees can be ring-barked and treated with one part glyphosate to four parts water or drilled with holes every 200-300ml around the trunk and 10-15 ml of undiluted glyphosate injected in.

Practical roles for hardwood plantations revealed at Omaha Managing effluent schemes with hardwood trees and maximising bioenergy production from such plantations, will be the focus of a Lower North Farm Forestry Association field day at Omaha Sewerage Ponds on August 20, from 10am to around 2pm. The event will be led by Ian Nicholas, a recently retired scientist from Scion (formerly Forest Research Institute) who has spent 35 years researching alternative forest trees to radiata pine and is also a specialist in short rotation forestry for bioenergy, land treatment with hardwoods and growing durable eucalypts. In 2009, Ian and the Land Treatment Collective were funded through MAF’s Sustainable Farming Fund to review land treatment schemes with hardwood plantations, including Omaha’s. The results of the review and the management of the now 23-year-old eucalypts and acacias will be discussed. Ian says the day will also incorporate the experience of local farm foresters and should be helpful to anyone interested in matching species and end uses, like firewood, durable timbers and high quality furniture. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Bring lunch and weather-appropriate attire.

Auckland Council is funding research into stoats to offset a significant threat to Hauraki Gulf islands. A $30,000 grant made to the University of Auckland helps fund two years’ work by PhD student Andrew Veale to conduct research into stoat migration. His research will be used by Council to help plan eradication and surveillance programmes by identifying where stoats originate. Stoats pose a major threat to native birdlife and are found on more than 90 islands around New Zealand. Hauraki Gulf stoat-free islands include Great Barrier and associated islands, Little Barrier, Rakino, Mokohinau Group and Rangitoto-Motutapu. Veale, who is based at Landcare Research, says his research focuses on the dispersal and connectivity of stoats, which is very useful in developing management programmes. “What I’m hoping to do with the Auckland region is to get an idea of the genetic population structure of stoats. If areas are connected, you need to develop management programmes that cover the areas simultaneously to be effective. “Stoats have a high mortality rate. Around 80 percent die in the first year of life so there is a great competition for resources, which leads to increased dispersal. As adept swimmers they set out for islands with the hope of finding lots of food.” Stoats were first introduced into NZ by settlers in the 1880s in an attempt to control rabbits and hares, and they live in any habitat where they can find food. They live for up to six to eight years and juveniles have been known to travel more than 70km in two weeks.

Volunteers were kept busy on the boardwalk construction project.
All hands on deck at Tawharanui By Sharon Kast
Under the efficient supervision of TOSSI volunteer project manager Roger Williams, the Lagoon and Mangatawhiri boardwalks are now complete. Significant savings in the budget have been made and two additional short boardwalks were added to complete the new Mangatawhiri Loop track. TOSSI provided funding for this project with an additional grant from The Chisholm Whitney Family Charitable Trust. Recently, a group of TOSSI volunteers, Moko Trust representative Ringi Brown, Auckland Council representative Dr Tim Lovegrove and open sanctuary coordinator Matt Maitland took a walk on the wild side and crossed the new boardwalk to the distain of two paradise ducks, which had taken up residence. They let out a loud squawk to show their displeasure with our presence. Australasian bittern, white-faced heron and banded rail have been seen in the wetlands, but not on this day. An official opening ceremony will take place in spring when the ground is dry and the track is signposted. Also last month, the installation of a sound anchoring system for seabirds was completed by International Student Volunteers (ISV) under the direction of Chris Gaskin and James Ross. On your next trip to the park, visit the newly painted and refurbished Sanctuary Hut, located at Anchor Bay. Resene’s paint colour ‘sanctuary green’ is quite appropriate and new colourful bird posters grace its interior. The posters show birds of Tawharanui which are likely to be seen in forest and pastures, the lagoon, wetlands and coastal areas. A large map of the park shows the trails and suggested walking routes. There is a banner on display celebrating TOSSI’s first 10 years and the Open Sanctuary’s remarkable success story. Speaking of success, last month’s Sunday planting brought the total number of native plants to 15,500 this season with just 2000 to be planted this month. So mark your calendar and help us to complete the revegetation project at Tawharanui. The next planting days are August 7 and September 4 (see What’s On on page 47 for details).

Johnstone Hill Tunnels Closed for Maintenance The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists there will be a full closure of the Northern Gateway Toll Road in both directions – SH1 between the Orewa interchange and Puhoi, on the evening of Tuesday 16 August. The work will be carried out at night between the hours of 10.30pm and 5.30am, due to reduced traffic volumes and to minimise disruption to road users. The following detours will be in place during this time: Cars – SH17 between Puhoi and the Orewa interchange Trucks – SH17 between Puhoi and the Silverdale interchange Trucks must use the detour to/from Silverdale and use SH17 (the free route) as local bylaws prohibit the use of Grand Drive for heavy vehicles during these hours. This work is an important part of the maintenance programme to ensure the Johnstone Hill Tunnels and the Motorway are kept in a good and safe condition for all road users. This work is being carried out over one night, rather than over a two day period using partial closures. For updates and information about these works, or any other motorway issues please call Auckland Motorways on 09 5200 200.

Dame Judi Dench and Vanessa Redgrave attended his first wedding, he’s friends with Richard Attenborough, he had his first taste of Dom Perignon at Ingrid Bergman’s birthday party, Alec Guinness once picked him up when his car broke down and he’s played golf with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. But the retired physical education teacher/director/producer/financial planner who has a doctorate in Kinesiology, doesn’t have much time for playing the fame game and as editor Jannette Thompson discovered, these famous names were just “workmates” … It might sound like a glamorous life but it wasn’t. I’d arrived in London in the early 1950s on a NZ Government bursary to study production abroad. I’d previously been working as physical education teacher, but had also been involved with the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society, based in the old Her Majesty’s Theatre. I’d toured NZ, singing and dancing, with the Australian company J.C. Williamson and dabbled in filmmaking, producing coaching films such as Learn to Swim. In London I attended the Central School of Speech and Drama as a graduate student. That’s where I met Judi and Vanessa, who were both in their first year at the school. Later I started with Ealing Films, in London, as an assistant director; just a fancy name for the dog’s body. These days I would have had a credit card to charge my bills to but back then, if you didn’t have the cash in your pocket, you didn’t go anywhere. I was so poverty-stricken, I couldn’t even afford to smoke. Brian Brake, now acknowledged, as NZ’s most renowned international photographer, and a friend from grammar school Tom Kneebone, who was in the Royal Shakespeare Company, were two Kiwi contemporaries, but by and large, unlike the Australians, NZers went their own way in England at that time. While at Ealing I worked on Dunkirk, directed by Leslie Norman (starring John Mills and Richard Attenborough), Scapegoat (Alec Guinness and Bette Davis), Inn of Sixth Happiness (Ingrid Bergman and Robert Donat) and Tom Thumb (Russ Tamblyn and Peter Sellars). Alec was a brilliant and accomplished actor; a real gentleman who considered other people. But I do recall him being less than impressed with a Savile Row suit I spent a fortune on. Looking back I suppose it did resemble the colours of a bumble bee, but I thought it was very smart at the time. Alec saw me and asked … “Eric, what are your wearing? I have a suit made out of that cloth in the film because it makes me look eccentric.” Sometime later, when he chanced to
see me on the side of the road with my head under the bonnet of a car which had broken down, he said he stopped because he recognised my suit pants! After working in film, I moved to television where commercial TV was in its infancy. There was no such thing as a ‘national’ network and regional services produced their own programmes for regional audiences. When we started work on Coronation Street at Granada for Yorkshire/Lancashire, it was a live show and we recruited local actors to play the roles because they knew the regional vernacular. They were a great bunch to work with, and we never envisaged it would go beyond the local audience, let alone international and still be on the screens 50 years later. Among the cast members was Patricia Phoenix, the street’s resident sex symbol Elsie Tanner. Pat was auditioned after her ruse of cutting out the middle of her bra (to show-off her assets to best effect) brought her to the attention of one of the casting directors. My mother kept a photo of the original cast (signed on the back by all the street originals such as Jack Walker, Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell, Len Fairclough and Valerie Barlow), which was taken at the request of a pop group called Johnny and the Moondogs, who were fans of the show. Of course people may remember them better as The Beatles. After being involved in directing or producing other shows such as Softly Softly, The Borderers (which starred a young Michael Gambon), Dr Finlay’s Casebook and the Onedin Line, I joined the Thomson media group, the second largest media conglomerate in the world at that time. My job was to help set-up television and radio stations in developing countries such as Jamaica, Addis Ababa, Barbados and Mexico. This involved appointing and training personnel. My return to NZ came after I received a cable from NZBC asking if I’d help set-up colour TV. They knew I’d already been involved in doing a similar job for the BBC, CBS in New York and ATV in England, but they didn’t realise
I was a New Zealander. I was about to say ‘no’, but a few days later I received a cable telling me that my father Les, a retired NZ Navy commander/engineer, was dying of cancer. I came out as a colour consultant and was then put in charge of all local production. Shows during this time included Frost Over NZ, Top Town, Mastermind, Town Cryer and Moynihan. I found the NZ industry quite different. In the US, England and Europe, people who work in films and television are interested in films and television. In NZ, film and television people are just interested in themselves. Here it’s all about ego. There’s an incredible amount of money wasted; money which could go into production. They say they can’t make ends meet – what they mean is they don’t know how to make ends meet. They didn’t want me to do Moynihan but we made that hour-long series for the same budget that TV1 was doing the half-hour Close to Home. It was planned properly and as a result it sold overseas. So it can be done. I’m not a good viewer these days, as I tend to flick between channels only stopping when something catches my eye. The best movie I’ve seen recently was The King’s Speech and I thought Downton Abbey was very well made. I prefer to read books because I find what’s on TV repetitive; there’s no
originality. All these “reality shows”, which are anything but reality, aren’t really what people want to watch. My Japanese akita Ichiban and I moved to Summerset two years ago. We meet lots of people on our walks and what I like about Warkworth is that people still have time to stop and talk. I like to paint and I’ve got a US PGA golf coaching qualification so I still do a bit of coaching at the Warkworth club. It’s odd that I should retire here because although I grew-up in Auckland, this is where I started school. I was about five when I came to live with the Buckley family; Ted Buckley managed the garage, about where Halls is now. I lived here for about six months and remember walking through Lucy Moore Park with a billy can to collect milk from the nearby farmer and jumping off the scows into the river. After leaving broadcasting, I joined NZ News as the managing director of Vid Com which set-up NZ’s first private film and television studio, and pioneered international conferencing. I later formed my own production company which specialised in TV commercials, industrial documentaries and media training. Some politicians were more difficult to teach than others – Dave Lange was marvellous, Muldoon less so. Before retiring, I joined the Bank of NZ as an investment advisor. So, you see, I’ve never strayed far from my original calling as a teacher.

Building strong local communities
I believe great cities are built from strong local communities. As a result – one of my priorities is ongoing investment at a local level to support our unique local identities and villages. An important tool to build strong local communities is your Local Board Plan. Each local board develops a plan that sets out the aspirations and priorities for your area, to guide the decisions the board will make in the future. The draft local board plans are now out for feedback. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board took an innovative step of hosting workshops with local intermediate and secondary schools, where they invited students to make presentations on different priorities within the plan and take part in discussions and debates on the future of their community. This caught my eye because I am always keen to hear young people’s thoughts on the future of their city. The workshops proved such a success that the board plans to make them an annual event. It is great that these young people could have their say on issues that will directly affect their daily lives, like local sports fields, cycleways, better public transport and infrastructure. It is great that they had the eyes and ears of their local board, and the chance to get involved with the future of their community. The Rodney Local Board held a successful series of open days about its draft plan, and the Devonport-Takapuna, Upper Harbour and Kaipatiki local boards have approached specific groups such as local businesses, disability organisations and the elderly for their input. Some have invited their communities to ‘grade’ the draft plans. I applaud everyone involved, from the board members, community groups, and members of the public including our school students. This is your Auckland and it is important your voice is heard. I try and get out of the Town Hall and into Auckland’s many villages as often as I can. It is important for me to hear from people in different communities across Auckland, be it at civic events, my informal Mayor in the Chair sessions and Town Hall meetings, or via Facebook or Twitter. It helps me get a better understanding of what Aucklanders are experiencing and what they care about. This is your Auckland and your community. It is important that your elected representatives know what you want for it. Submissions on the draft local board plans close on August 8. Copies can be viewed at local service centres, libraries or online at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

submissions being August 4. “There will be a hearing and decision, but if anyone who has submitted objects to that decision the matter could be appealed,” he said. “We had hoped to have Stage 1 of the project (100 carparks) completed in time for the World Cup but the notification means we have missed that deadline. The best case scenario, but again largely dependent on appeals, is that the full operation which includes 500 spaces plus signalised intersection, pedestrian

At a meeting in Orewa last month Auckland Mayor Len Brown said the moratorium on public works during the RWC was also an issue. “We don’t want an ugly building site right opposite Silverdale Rugby Club where World Cup teams will be practising,” Mayor Brown said.

A recent request for information about Dome Valley School uncovered some interesting history. Records show that in 1873, a deputation waited upon the Board of Education to put their case for a school in the area. Parents were concerned that the distance to Warkworth or Kaipara Flats made regular attendance difficult. The school may have opened in temporary premises, as mention is made of Dome Valley children attending a school fete in 1874. In 1877, the building that began life as the original Presbyterian church in McKinney Rd, Warkworth, became available and was transported to a site on Kaipara Flats Rd, near Phillips Rd. For almost 50 years a sole teacher, or sometimes a married couple, adequately met the educational needs of the settlers who made up the postal district of Streamlands, now more commonly called Dome Valley. A former pupil wrote the following: “Do you remember the mud on school hill in winter? How the horses heaved and plunged to drag the heavy coach through, for the road was a quagmire from side-to-side and the daily coach service from Kaipara Flats did nothing to improve it. We children used to climb the bank to escape the sea of mud, walking single file along a slippery clay track among the gorse bushes. If we were late we dare not

run as we could risk falling flat in the clay and then standing by the school stove to dry out. But summer was pure bliss – except for the difficulty of concentrating while a tui sang ecstatically outside.” By 1926, the roads had improved somewhat and it was considered a cheaper option to bus the children into Warkworth School. For some years the community had the use of the building as a hall and library, but in 1940, both site and building were advertised for sale. On the move again, the little school building found a new home as the Warkworth

Warkworth helicopter company sets new safety standards benchmark
Helicopter company Skywork has set a New Zealand precedent by picking up a CAA safety award for the second time. The Warkworth-based company, owned by Roger and Miriam Stevenson, first won the award for safety excellence in 2000. Last month, they did it again. In presenting the award, Civil Aviation director Kevin Ward said the company had very effective systems, which were reflected in an impressive audit record. He said Skywork’s ability to set and maintain its high standards was an example for others to follow. “Their actions have directly resulted in safety standards being raised, and they have encouraged others in the aviation industry to do the same,” Mr Ward said. Roger and Miriam said the award was a proud achievement for the Skywork’s team and their attitude executed on a day-to-day basis. The company, which started 14 years ago, now employs 22 staff including three pilots. They undertake a wide diversity of work throughout the northern North Island, from jobs in forestry and agriculture to tourist flights, power line work and firefighting. They have been called in to change the goalposts at the North Harbour Stadium, help with track work for the Department of Conservation, relocate endangered fauna, boat salvage and to help with emergency service repairs. The awards are open to individuals, operators and Roger and Miriam Stevenson accepting their national safety award. organisations involved in aviation throughout NZ.

Chris, a Whangateau resident, qualified in 1966 and was a partner of Burns Hart & Co for 30 years before merging his practice with Wynyard Wood in 2004. He served on the Auckland District Law Society Council and the NZLS Board, and was a trustee of the NZ Law Foundation. Chris says he intends to devote his retirement to rowing his dinghy on Whangateau Harbour, and his four-hectare farmlet where he breeds alpaca and Gotland sheep. His other interests include fine arts, music, education, writing, beekeeping, Italian architecture and landscape/garden design. “About 10 years ago, Linden and I attended an Italian villas and gardens course in Florence,” he said. “It expanded our understanding of gardens as outdoor rooms, although we are a little constrained here in NZ by the mud!” As the only Notary Public between Orewa and Whangarei, Chris will continue to offer his services to people needing verification on documents, particularly documents to be used overseas.

Warkworth cabinetmaker Neil Taylor has graduated from award-winning apprentice to experienced tradesman and is now starting his own business based in Glenmore Drive. As an apprentice cabinetmaker Neil won the Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association’s John Tiddy Memorial Award and a trip to AWISA (Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association), the biggest woodworking show in the southern hemisphere. Neil says he has been interested in woodwork for as long as he can remember, having spent time since childhood tinkering with wood alongside his grandfathers who were both in the industry. Seven years of experience working for other local contractors in all aspects of the trade has only reinforced his enthusiasm. Through his new business, he is looking forward to having more creative input and working collaboratively with customers to realise their needs. His services include the design, construction and installation of any interior cabinetry for new and existing houses, including complete kitchens and specialist storage solutions. Neil says customised designs extend beyond kitchens and fitted wardrobes to maximise storage and floor space in every room of the house, including
Experienced real estate agents Andrew Steens and Angela Wain have purchased the Mike Pero franchise for the Matakana Coast area. The area covers Warkworth, Snells Beach, Omaha, Matakana and Leigh, as well as the villages and rural areas in between. Since starting in late June, the office has listed 20 properties and four are already under contract. Andrew, who handles the listing and marketing of properties, says they have been overwhelmed by the positive response of both sellers and buyers to the Mike Pero brand. “The brand name is well-known and distinctive, which we believe has helped elevate the profile of these properties in the marketplace,” he says. “We also get a lot more visits on the internet.” Mike Pero Real Estate is the first major nationally recognised brand to reduce the cost of selling real estate. The savings are as much as 25 percent in some cases by bringing the commission rate down to only 2.95 percent for the first $390,000 and 1.95 percent thereafter. The administration fee, which is charged by most agencies, has been reduced from typically $500 to $395. Angela, who works most closely with vendors and buyers, says the

commission makes a big difference. “For example, on a $400,000 sale, the commission is only $13,903 including GST and administration, compared to up to $18,500 with most other major brands,” she says. “In these economic times, keeping costs down is really important to most people.” Andrew and Angela say a solid endorsement of the Mike Pero brand is the recent addition of real estate veteran Ross Harvey, former owner of Harveys Real Estate, who is the company’s national sales manager. “Mike Pero enables top performing salespeople to take on their own franchises and determine their own futures without being held back by all the cost structures of middle management, administration, office overheads and branch margins,” Ross says. “All this equates to a reduction in delivery costs, allowing the business to lower the cost to the vendor selling the home.”

TTT Plumbing Ltd Twenty years experience in the plumbing business has given Mark Sim an appreciation of what it means to provide good customer service. Originally from East London, South Africa, he has worked for Grant MacLean, of Grace Developments, in Snells Beach, for the past three years. When Grant recently shifted to Rotorua, Mark took over Grant’s business and renamed it TTT Plumbing Ltd. This name came as a result of being ‘tried, tested and trusted’ over the past 20 years in plumbing. “My wife Wendy and I ran a large plumbing business in East London, employing 28 staff with five vans on the road,” he says. “But I like being back on the tools.” Apart from some terminology differences – hot water cyclinders are called geysers in South Africa, and joiners are connectors – Mark says plumbing and drainage work in NZ and South Africa are very similar. The couple, along with their two daughters, emigrated three-and-a-half years ago. “We’ve been made to feel very welcome and we really appreciate living in a calm and peaceful society.” They are involved in the Mahurangi Vineyard Church and Mark helps with maintenance at the Springboard

headquarters in Hamatana Road. Wendy teaches mosaics at Mahurangi Christian School and she and her daughters are busy establishing their own charms4u bracelet business. Mark says plumbing is his passion. He does new house plumbing, maintenance and drainlaying. His advice to people going away for more than a week is to turn their water off at the mains. “By doing this, you know you will definitely not get home to any water leaks.”

Wharehine achieves international standard Wellsford-based construction company Wharehine has achieved the highest level of international Environmental Management Systems certification. Work on achieving ISO14001:2004 started in February and required a review of all aspects of the company’s operations. Regulatory manager Andrew Shirley says the standard was achieved through a team effort and a strong company culture of continuous improvement. “Ideas and input were gained from the directors through to the guys in the trenches so that the certificates aren’t just bits of paper, but actually become part of the way we do things,” he says. While most major companies have ISO14001:2004 certification, Andrew says it is quite rare for medium-sized companies such as Wharehine to achieve the standard. He says environmental standards cover a range of issues including management of flora and fauna, hazardous waste and toxic spills.

Plan needs local involvement
Hot on the heels of the release of the discussion document for the Auckland Spatial Plan Auckland Unleashed are the Local Board Plans. The Rodney Local Board Plan addresses a range of social, economic, environmental and cultural issues where the Local Board will seek improvements over the next three years. The priorities identified in the plan will inform the annual Local Board Agreements, which are the basis upon which funding will be allocated for various projects in local areas. It is, therefore, important that from the outset there is a high level of local public involvement in this process. Having read the draft Local Board Plan there are many unknowns but also some specifics that it will be worth endorsing. For example, initiatives to facilitate programmes to support economic growth will be led and funded by the Local Board. Whilst such initiatives should surely be supported, there is no detail within the plan as to the nature of these initiatives. This is probably because of the timing involved in preparing the plan and the fact that the plan is in the consultation phase. The plan states that there will be Business Improvement Districts, mainstreet organisations and youth programmes. However, detail beyond this is not provided, nor are any other options canvassed. The plan does state though that interventions to create local job opportunities and so on will be investigated. Will the outcomes of such investigations be consulted on at a later date? In my opinion, there are a number of local issues that could be more directly reflected in the plan such as car parking in Warkworth and the constraints this has on local commercial development, the environmental sensitivities of the Whangateau and Mahurangi harbours, and programmes to improve water quality in these locations. I also think it would be useful for the community, if forward planning documents such as structure plans and mainstreet upgrades were specifically listed, perhaps in an appendix, and also that areas where new structure plans will be required are specifically stated. Being more specific will ensure that projects implemented over the next three years, through the Local Board Plan, will be more representative of the community wishes. Otherwise, there is a danger that issues advocated for by more vocal representation will achieve their desired outcomes at the expense of other projects that may also be worthy. The only way the Local Board can effectively make decisions on behalf of local communities is if people are involved through the consultation process and clearly state what they want and what they don’t want. Consultation on the Rodney Local Board Plan closes on August 8. See also Viewpoint p10.

His father Jack, who will be the café manager, has had previous experience in the hospitality industry. Gary ensures team members are ready by providing short courses and a chance to work alongside experienced operators for at least two weeks. Ongoing advice and assistance is also provided. “Mowing and maintaining properties requires certain skills that can be taught, but it’s equally important that franchisees are helpful and trustworthy. Elderly clients in particular often have little jobs that need doing around the home and we are happy to help out when we can.” Gary says the company’s clients are generally hard working people who like having a garden, but don’t have the time to maintain it. Growth in the region has meant around 1000 new clients each year on Gary’s books. “We aim to give clients the best lawn in the street, and there are certain tricks to achieving that. One is mowing lawns frequently, but not on too low a setting so that the grass thickens nicely.” Working locally has allowed Gary, who has lived with his family on the Coast for more than a decade, to spend time attending his three children’s rugby, netball and basketball games, and he also enjoyed a stint as president of the local Toastmasters. “We try to ensure all our franchisees work close to home – in their local suburb if possible. This makes good business sense but is also helpful for families and from a community point of view.”

Jim’s Mowing Rodney
Jim’s Mowing’s distinctive green trailers are a familiar sight around the Hibiscus Coast, and regional franchisor Gary Turton of Army Bay, who oversees the Coast franchisees, says the lawn mowing and garden maintenance services are in great demand locally. Recently Gary expanded his operation and he is now franchisor for the former Rodney area and Northland. This has put Gary back behind a mower, until he can find enough suitable franchisees to cope with demand. Gary sold his business importing computer software seven years ago to purchase a Jim’s Mowing franchise. He says it was a great move for his physical and mental health. “I needed to de-stress and doing active outdoor work was ideal,” Gary says. “I lost 10kgs and saw a lot more of my family. I didn’t need the gym membership any more, as I was effectively being paid to keep fit.” These days Gary’s role includes interviewing potential franchisees and providing ongoing training for team members working towards their Certificate in Horticulture. He says Jim’s Mowing selects its franchisees with care and only those who are good with clients, hardworking, motivated and selfdisciplined make the cut. He says most of those chosen to take up a Jim’s Mowing franchise are professionals in their mid-30s to 50s, who are looking for a lifestyle change. This includes a highly qualified former IT Network engineer, a marketing

X factor destinations beckon intrepid world travellers Every year, Shermans Travel.com’s ever-value-conscious and relentlessly globe-trotting editors pile into a room to mull over their collective travel mileage, gush about their favorite dollar-stretching destinations, and forecast where their readers should go in the year ahead to get the best travel bang for their buck. Their picks for the top value travel destinations in 2011 go well beyond a simple list of under-the-radar hot spots, since many of those tend to be remote and not particularly walletfriendly. In fact, the only destinations they’ve included that require far-flung travels are ones where the dollar travels even further once you touch down. Enticing exchange rates, increased accessibility at decreased costs, special event promotions, and extraordinary comparative value were just some of the factors that helped them narrow the lens. And in the end, all of these budgetfriendly locales offer a high degree of affordability, in addition to distinctive and memorable travel experiences. Hot spot travel destinations: yy Sandwiched between Thailand and Laos to the north and Vietnam to the south, and fronting the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is less trammelled and less expensive than
its heavily touristed neighbours. yy County Clare, on Ireland’s rugged western coast, boasts spectacular natural landscapes like the Cliffs of Moher, as well as a slew of medieval castles, quaint towns, and challenging golf courses. yy Even as the Dominican Republic’s sandy shores pile up accolades and prop up buzz-worthy resorts, the second-largest island in the Caribbean remains one of the region’s most affordable. yy Denver ‘wows’ with a thriving pedestrian district, impressive craft brewery scene, and a fleet of new budget routes. Day trips to surrounding ski areas are also a savvy way to hit the slopes. yy Visiting oenophiles to the Finger Lakes region can expect roads and tasting rooms free of congestion, while reaping the bounty of one of the most affordable wine country destinations in the country. yy Guanajuato offers the same narrow cobblestone pathways, pastelhued hillside homes, and elaborate colonial churches without the Americanisation that some San Miguel visitors now decry. yy Nicaragua, Costa Rica’s neighbour to the north, has finally come into its own, putting its tumultuous

political history behind it, and emerging as the ‘it’ spot for ecotourism and adventure travel. yy The main lures for visitors to Peru’s Sacred Valley are the mystical archaeological ruins, left over from the pre-Columbian Incan civilizations

Simple measures keep homes secure while owners away There are a number of straightforward preventative measures and steps that homeowners can take to keep their home secure when going away on holiday. Insite Security director Chris Martin says when homeowners are going away or are out of their house for any period of time, they should always activate their burglar alarm. “Have an alarm system professionally installed and consider having it monitored by a reputable local security company,” Chris says. “Insurance claims may be invalidated if you fail to turn a security system on. Make sure doors, windows and other entry and exit points from your house have good quality, effective catches and locks. Use deadlocks if possible and get into the habit of always using them.” Chris recommends always locking doors and windows at night. “Don’t leave a door key hidden outside; burglars know all the places to look. Remember to keep garden sheds and garages secure, and lock away tools and ladders. Installing sensor lights on access paths or around main external doors is a good idea.”

By getting a neighbour to clear your mailbox and to turn on lights, you can reduce the risk of a break-in.
Chris says get to know your neighbours and develop plans to deal with problems or suspicious activity. Exchanging phone numbers or emergency contact details is a good start. “If you are going away, neighbours can collect your mail or newspaper and make your place look occupied by turning on lights, parking a vehicle in your driveway, hanging washing on your line or mowing lawns. “Don’t leave boxes for new purchases such as a computer outside where they are visible. Keep valuable items such as laptops and jewellery out of sight when not at home.” Chris says that good security measures can earn discounts on insurance premiums too.

surprises Agents provide a full travel service for all eventualities With the explosion of online travel booking websites, the question is frequently asked “why use a travel agent when we can do it ourselves online?” There are 101 reasons but the top ones remain simple and undisputed:
The human element
When you are on your trip of a lifetime or just a short break away, and the next volcano explodes, an earthquake strikes, airline crew go on strike or there is an outbreak of some new disease – who are you going to call? No computer is going to proactively rebook you or find you a hotel so you don’t have to sleep at the airport or try to get through to the airlines for days on end.
Value for money
When you book that next holiday are you sure you have the taxes, currency, fees, time zones and locations correct, and are you still getting the cheapest price? The photos on websites are always of the best room in the hotel, the best part of the beach, spectacular views you will see and inevitably this is not what you get when you arrive there. surprises Experts share ‘tried and true’ travel advice Holidays in the Before setting out on a grand adventure, there is some tried and true travel advice that never goes astray. Here are some of the best travel tips from some local travel experts: World Travellers Warkworth, director Lynette Giles –
yy No matter where you travel and what situation you are in, try to maintain an upbeat and positive attitude. A smile is always received much better than a confrontational or sour manner. This way you most likely will receive better service and people will willing go that extra mile for you. Everything that happens on holiday is a life experience and you will look back on it as a great learning curve. yy Booking through a good and trusted travel agent and taking out travel insurance can literally be your lifesaver. With the terrible world events that have happened recently – ash clouds, tsunamis, earthquakes, this has become more apparent. Booking online means you have no one in the industry to turn too. A
travel Agent can solve all your issues and are there to help. Harvey World Travel Warkworth, travel professional Chris Smith –
yy Include a seven-night cruise in the middle of an eight-week European holiday to break up the itinerary into two separate itineraries. You get the benefit of relaxing after the initial hustle and bustle of getting to Europe and the touring of Europe you’ve done so far. It also provides quality time to spend with your travel partner and for post-card writing, doing laundry and the bonus of seeing a few more places that you hadn’t planned on seeing
yy When labelling luggage before leaving home, be sure to address your bag tags with your first stop address not your home address. Take a supply of address cards with you to update your bag tags as you travel. Flight Centre Warkworth, team leader Chriss Kavanagh –
yy If you are a foodie, don’t be afraid to try the local fare. Some of the best food can be found at local restaurants and market stalls and be sure to always drink lots of water when travelling regardless of the temperature.
yy If you enjoy shopping, unpack your packed suitcase or backpack the day before you depart, and leave half of the contents behind as this will leave more space for souvenirs.

Fiji and Rarotonga remain firm favourites with New Zealanders when choosing package holidays, but for those who are looking for something a little different, Samoa is a certainly worth considering. It’s a safe and relatively inexpensive destination, which offers all that travellers expect from a tropical locale – white sandy beaches rimmed by coconut palms and warm aquamarine swimming lagoons within coral reefs. Samoa’s centuries old culture and customs, based on Fa’a Samoa, adds another dimension to any visit. Car hire is often included when booking, as driving around the islands of Upolu and Savai’i is fun and adventurous. Recent road rule changes means that cars in Samoa also drive on the same side of the road as NZ. The NZ dollar’s strong performance against the US dollar is also making family packages to the US more attractive and affordable. Additionally, there is increasing interest in packages and tours to South America, and Argentina and Peru in particular. Travel agents have the training and experience to arrange flights and accommodation options to suit most budgets and needs.

Brief Puhoi planting day increases diversity Puhoi Landcare Group is encouraging the public to pitch in and help plant Puhoi River Park on August 21, from 10am-12pm. Chairperson Shelley Hackett says it’s the group’s third year of planting to increase diversity in the regenerating area. “It’s a great place to plant because it’s a public space right in the middle of Puhoi that everyone can access and they can watch the trees they have planted grow,” she says. The planting of colonising species such as manuka, karamu, cabbage tree and flax will help to attract birds and other species. All ages are welcome and volunteers are asked to bring their own spade and gloves. A sausage sizzle will be held afterwards. For information contact Shelley 09 422 0076.

A gentle, yoga-based exercise programme that’s been delivering major benefits to participants in Maungaturoto and Mangawhai is now being offered in Wellsford. Choose to be active
“Use it or lose it” is one of those old adages that comes in very handy. Whether it’s discussing loss of fitness with an overweight forty-something, or loss of balance with an unsteady seventy-something, there’s truth in those few words. For many people the hardest time to keep up physical activity may be through the winter. Fewer daylight hours and wet weather are all very understandable excuses for failing to get outside and active. But if we don’t want to ‘lose it’, then it’s important to resist the comforting lure of the couch and TV. Keeping active needn’t be hard. For some people it may mean leaving the car at home for short errands, playing actively with the kids, or for others it might be time to stop ignoring the dog, or perhaps adopt a friend’s dog, and go walkies! There are often local classes for sports or fitness, including the popular tai chi sessions designed for older adults. It’s a strange paradox that a sports-mad country like New Zealand should be seeing a steady increase in diseases such as diabetes. I suspect this is in part the fault of the huge industry that is ‘professional sport’. This industry relies on encouraging spectators, particularly through Sky TV, but not participators. Which may also leave some people feeling excluded because they don’t have the skill levels they see on ‘the box’. Another artificial anxiety that affects our perception of sport is this strange need to have the latest hi-tech gear. Just take cycling for example – sure it’s a popular sport, but does everyone need the latest bike and all that lurid lycra. Well, no! You can ride any bike in any old clothing. So ditch the pay-TV subscription, leave the car behind and reclaim the streets, parks and beaches. If everyone got out and about it would make our communities safer too. For more information visit www.sparc.org.nz and Push-Play.

Wilson Home seeks anniversary memorabilia
It is time to stir the memory embers of anyone associated with a facility for people with disabilities, on Auckland’s North Shore. In the lead up to next April’s 75th anniversary, The Wilson Home Trust is urging former residents, nurses, gardeners, supporters, fundraisers and others to register online and be kept in touch with plans for the celebrations. Director Russell Ness says organisers are keen to hear from anyone regarding their memories of the home and would like to know about any photographs or other items they might have. The Wilson Home Trust was established in 1937, when Mr and Mrs W. R. Wilson gifted their family home, and 13 acres of magnificent coastal gardens at Belmont, near Takapuna, for the expressed benefit of children with disabilities. hatchingtime Childcare philosophy sits alongside environmental care Sustainability and the natural environment’s role in children’s development are two themes which underpin the new purpose-built early childhood education centre, due to open in Glenmore Drive, Warkworth, on August 10. Nature’s Nest Early Learning Centre is owned by Hayley Hargreaves and Arnika Davies, who both have extensive experience in early childhood education. Prior to starting Nature’s Nest, Hayley was the licensee and owner of Lollipops Educare in Orewa for the past seven years and Arnika is a registered teacher who has been working at an Orewa childcare centre since 2004, mainly as the centre manager. But the women have also drawn on their experiences as mothers when designing the new centre. “We have created a place where we would be comfortable to send our own children,” Hayley says. “We want the centre to inspire children to love learning and to appreciate and respect the environment.” The centre is licensed for 75 children, aged from birth to five years and will open Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm. It will employee around 15 staff, which includes both qualified and training teachers, and a cook who will provide nutritious homemade meals.
Hayley says early childcare is in her blood. “My mother Suzanne Hargreaves founded the Lollipops Educare franchise and was an early childhood educator for more than three decades. As a parent of a 13-year-old son I have a good understanding of what parents face when choosing a childcare centre. My goal is to ensure that Nature’s Nest offers the highest standard of care available for families, in a beautiful, welcoming and nurturing environment.” Arnika is a parent of two preschoolers and is committed to the values of teaching and inspiring children. She says the centre will also be able to cater for children with special needs. “After having a discussion with the parents about their child’s needs, we will be able to determine the best way to support the child whether it is a physical or learning disability, or if they have a specific allergy.” The 20 hours Early Childhood Education (ECE) subsidy is available at the centre and parents can also apply for subsides in fees from WINZ. The centre’s philosophy is to encourage children from a young age to make a difference in the world, positively engage in sustainable behaviours and cooperative relationships with the earth.
Owners Hayley Hargreaves and Arnika Davies.
Outdoor classroom set to inspire youngsters natural development The outdoor play area at Nature’s Nest has been custom-designed to invoke a child’s imagination to explore and discover life, and to inspire them to look more closely at the natural world around them. Using plants, trees, trails, mounds, natural sensorial sensations, sand and moving water, NaturePlay NZ has designed what business founders Anna Gentry and Dean Aplin say is a one-of-a-kind outdoor area at an early childhood education centre. “We have created an outdoor classroom
where children can build a strong and healthy relationship with nature,” Anna says. “Being in a sensory-rich environment, children will find their own learning naturally.” The design includes a worm farm, organic edible gardens, composting and native gardens. The children at the centre will be involved in the next stage of the development which includes an orchard and native forest. There are areas for children to climb and learn to balance, all in a safe environment.

Landscape for play “Our creations come from a team which includes educators, risk management advisors, designers and parents. Everything is built to NZ Safety regulations and standards.” Anna says the playground design, which covers about 440m2, incorporates non-toxic materials such as hard wood (untreated) and locally-sourced resources. The total site is 2610m2, including the building, which is just under 500m2. “It is our endeavour to build and manage the playscape toxic free.” Marsden Contractors, a Warkworthbased earthmoving company, spent around two months developing the site from initial excavations to laying the metal under the playground, drainage and supplying mulch and soil. Owner Tony Marsden says he was surprised at

the amount of earthworks required. “Looking at the area now, a beautiful job has been done by everyone involved,” Tony says. Treescapes supported the project by donating mulch and slabs of wood for stepping stones, pathways and outdoor tables. Warkworth builder Peter Luyt was also involved in the playground from the beginning. His work included paving, building a raised stage, vegetable boxes, fencing and posts for the shade sails. Peter says the project is an innovative idea. “I thoroughly enjoyed working on the project,” he says. “The centre provides a place for children to be children and to explore the world around them.”

Top reggae soul bands rock Leigh x3 Musicians from around NZ will unite at Leigh Sawmill Café on August 6 and play a combination of vintage reggae and energetic, soulful blues. On stage will be The Midnights, The Nudge and AHoriBuzz. Auckland band The Midnights has been developing its unique brand of reggae, rock and soul music since 2003. The band has become notorious for its energetic live shows. Word-of-mouth has secured them slots alongside reggae legends such as UB40, The Wailers, Third World, The Skatalites, Big Youth and Maxi Priest. The Midnights have also performed alongside some of the top names in NZ’s reggae and dub scene. The band has come a long way purely on the strength of their live reputation and is excited to be taking their first studio album on the road. Wellington-based band The Nudge describe themselves as a fresh form of innovative blues. The trio are individually inspired by multiple genres of music. Together they form a complex sound often termed ‘psychedelic swampy blues’ with an element of party. Having recently supported Little Bushman, Fly My Pretties and The Black Seeds, they have just finished recording their debut album. AHoriBuzz is the solo project and innovation of Aaron Tokona, formally of Weta and member of Cairo Knife Fight. AHoriBuzz features a revolving line-up of talented musicians. Tokona is on vocals and Nick Gaffney, also from Cairo Knife Fight, is the guitarist. Since forming, they have released two singles that have become underground favourites

State Of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Patchett is the author of Bel Canto which won the Orange Prize. State of Wonder is the story of Marina Singh, a lab researcher, who is sent to the rainforests of Brazil to find Dr Annick Swenson. Swenson has been developing a drug that could alter the lives of women with infertility problems. However, she has shrouded her work in mystery, refuses to update her investors on progress, and unfortunately the last person sent to find her has died in mysterious circumstances. Marina hasn’t told anyone, but she was once a student of Dr Swenson and she is not looking forward to seeing her again. As she searches for Swenson, she has time to think about her life, loves and family. The heat and intensity of the Amazon is brought to life with Patchett’s eye for detail. This is a brilliant read.
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, from an original idea by Siobhan Dowd
This new novel for both teens and adults is from an idea by the late Siobhan Dowd. The publisher approached Ness, hoping he would be able to finish what Siobhan had started. Ness is the author of the incredibly successful Chaos Walking trilogy. This is the story of Conor who is visited by a monster just after midnight. Conor has been having nightmares since his mother started her treatments, and he’s surprised to find that this monster isn’t as scary as his dreams. It’s very old and quite wild and it’s going to tell Conor three stories and then wants something very dangerous from Conor – the truth. His mother ends up in hospital and Conor has to decide if he’s going to live with his grandmother, who he doesn’t like. Everyone at school is treating him differently and his father is finally coming home for a visit from America where he has a new family. The visits from the monster are almost easier to deal with than his daily life. This is for a mature teenager as it deals with cancer. Highly recommended.

Greenpeace photographer shares images Goods go under from a lifetime of underwater adventures the hammer for Marine biologist and marine photographer Dr Roger Grace will share images he has gathered over 20 years as a Greenpeace photographer, at a Mid North Forest and Bird winter talk in Warkworth, on August 18. Dr Grace’s talk entitled ‘Our Oceans in focus – a photographic insight into the marine world,’ will take the audience on a photographic journey from oceans to icebergs. “I averaged around two major trips each year for Greenpeace,” he says. “I’ve been to Antarctica five times, and experienced long voyages on the Rainbow Warrior covering a range of fishing issues including blue-fin tuna and long-lining. I’ve been involved with a few climate change and oil campaigns, and whaling and deep sea trawling.” Dr Grace was already a well-known underwater photographer before joining Greenpeace. “My first trip in 1990 was aboard their new ship on a drift net campaign in the Tasman Sea, photographing animals caught in nets. “I also spent three weeks A Pacific white-sided dolphin drowned when it tangled in a monofilament photographing fishing villages along driftnet in the North Pacific. This winter, we have discovered how easy it is to make quesadillas at home (or in the shop for a warm lunch). In Mexico, quesadillas (pronounced kay-sah-deeyah) are prepared on city street corners, at small stands under trees along winding streets and rural highways, in flea markets, and in small diners. Delicious served hot with salsa, guacamole and sour cream, they are very light and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Perfect with a bowl of soup. A classic quesadilla is basically a tortilla with some melted cheese inside. In addition to cheese, you can put practically anything you like in a quesadilla: tomatoes, onions, olives, chicken, potatoes, mushrooms, chillies, chorizo, beans or ground beef and pork. Try making a dessert variety using chocolate, butterscotch or caramel and some fruit.
BasicCanMethod for Quesadilla be made and cooked in 10 minutes • Large flour tortillas -Use plain or whole meal tortillas • Grated cheese – a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella • Olive or rice bran oil Optional: Sliced mushrooms, Spring or red onions, Black olives, sliced, Fresh tomatoes, diced, Chicken pieces, Avocado Heat a large heavy-based frying pan to medium-high heat. Place a tortilla in bottom of lightly oiled pan. Take a handful of grated cheese, sprinkle over the top of the tortilla, making sure that the cheese does not land on the pan itself. Add whatever additional ingredients you choose – onion, sliced mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, diced, cooked chicken etc. Take care not to layer on the ingredients too thickly – this is a quesadilla, not a quiche. Top with another tortilla to make a sandwich. Reduce the heat and cover the pan. After one minute flip the sandwich over to brown topside. Cook a minute or two and then check to see if cheese has melted, if not, return the cover and keep checking every minute until it is. Remove from pan and cut into wedges. Serve with your choice of salsa, guacamole and sour cream.
Tomarata tales prove to be terrific Fairy tale characters, hero’s and villains came to life at the Wellsford Community Centre on July 13 and 14, when Tomarata School held its biennial school production. Ideas for their performance, titled Terrific Tomarata Tales, came from senior students favourite fairy tales and famous characters. The whole school participated, spending more than a term working with volunteers Maureen Skinner and Val Couling, who helped write the script and choreograph the production. Both parents and students helped to make costumes and props. Tomarata principal Lynne Duffin says highlights of the performance included an appearance from Darth Vader.

Arts and culture funding sitting on the fence A decision by Rodney Local Board on whether or not it can retain Auckland Regional Services Trust (ARST) funding long-term remains unresolved. ARST funding is available to community groups for arts and cultural projects. Historically, Rodney District Council held the principal in trust and allocated the interest on an annual basis. When Auckland amalgamated last November, Rodney was the only territorial authority not to have allocated the fund in full. Unlike the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, which has since decided to allocate both the principal and interest of its share this year, Rodney Local Board members have asked for further information. In a report to the Rodney board meeting on July 11, two options were presented – either continue to distribute the interest annually or distribute the fund in full this year. Board members deferred a decision, asking for specific figures on how much was available for distribution this financial year and if the balance of the fund could be permanently ringfenced for Rodney. It was estimated that there was $690,376 in the total fund, and of this, Hibiscus Bays would receive $299,470 and Rodney $390,906. Board member James Rolfe says the board has been advised that if the entire amount is not spent this year,
it would be impossible to guarantee that the funds could be ring-fenced for Rodney in future. “Given this, I think the money should be spent this year in Rodney, rather than perhaps being lost to greater Auckland.” Board member Steven Garner says agrees. “While this would not be the best outcome, the local board is committed
to ensuring that ultimately whatever happens it is in the best interest of our community,” Steve says. Board member June Turner says it is essential that the money be secured for the Rodney Ward. “I do not see why the fund cannot continue as it has been,” June says. “Our needs in Rodney differ to those in urban areas and funds for projects like this need to continue.”
garden concept A public meeting was held in Puhoi last month to gauge the community’s view on a proposal to build a botanical garden, containing a collection of the world’s medicinal plants, in the village. The Sustainability Institute Foundation is driving the project. Trust spokesperson Ann-Marie Goldthorp lead the discussion about what it would mean for Puhoi if the project were to go ahead, possibly in the Puhoi River Park. She said the gardens would enhance the local area. “It would be ‘your’ herbal gardens,” Ann-Marie said. “Locals would have free access to the park including using the area for fundraising events and activities. It would raise the price of property and would create employment.” Ann-Marie said the gardens would include plants from other countries already growing in NZ. She said she had investigated using DOC land, but it would be a lengthy process. Biodiversity regulations concerns were also raised, but Ann said all plants would adhere to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry regulations. Rodney Local Board member Tracey Martin said she could see the possibilities of the garden if it had community support.

How to Retire Rich was the captivating title of a talk to Warkworth Probus last month. The speaker was author and former commercial airline pilot Alan Clarke, who has written a book on the subject. Before becoming a financial advisor, Alan flew more than 11,000 hours in planes ranging from top dressing aircraft to commercial jets and helicopters. His flying is for pleasure only these days, although he does still instruct. Clarke identified 22 mistakes that people make before and after retirement. Some of these included spending too much on housing, spending too much time planning holidays, not getting good financial advice, being uninformed about retirement cash flows, getting burnout and retiring too soon, and thinking all experts can pick good investments. He said that only three out of 95 active investment managers out-

His advice was to have some money offshore as a type of insurance and non-retirees should not rely on Government superannuation, but make some private provision. His parting advice was to pay attention to personal finances and get them checked by an expert annually. For more information about Probus contact Bill Speed on 425 8414.

A wayfaring kiwi’s adventure By Kevin Hawkins

For more than 10 years, Motuora Island has been used as a nursery for kiwi chicks hatched at the Auckland Zoo from eggs taken from the wild in Northland. At the end of June, four women on a Department of Conservation five-day Volunteer Programme on the island found a kiwi cowering under a rock on the beach below the cliffs. This was quite by chance, as Bev Hill happened to sit down next to the rock the kiwi was under. They were able to pick it up and carry it back to the nursery in a backpack. The ladies nicknamed the kiwi Hillbilly after Bev (whose nickname is Hillbilly). Hillbilly spent the night in the island aviary and the next day was transported to the zoo’s Centre for Conservation Management, under the care of senior veterinarian – conservation & research, Richard Jakob-Hoff. Nominations for this year’s SPARC Sport Volunteer Awards close on August 23. There are three categories: yy Wattie’s Student Sport Volunteer Award (for sport volunteers 18 years old or younger); yy SPARC Sport Volunteer Award (for sport volunteers over 18 years of age); yy Lifetime Achievement Award (for 25+ years of service to community sport). Regional award winners will be decided by each of the 17 regional sports trusts in NZ with winners receiving sport store vouchers. Plus, the Wattie’s Student Sport Volunteer will also receive a Wattie’s prize pack. Previously the awards recognised volunteer coaches only. But this year the awards have been expanded to recognise all 800,000 volunteers at the heart of community sport – referees, administrators, fundraisers, kit-washers, and coaches. SPARC chief executive Peter Miskimmin says the awards help recognise people who put their hearts and souls into helping out. “I was at the park in the community where I live recently when there was a rugby tournament for under8s.” he says. “There were Mums and Dads coaching and refereeing, others keeping score, and the kids were having a ball. That’s what makes Saturdays for so many families. Community sport in New Zealand can’t survive without volunteers. The awards are one way of recognising the contribution they make.” Nominations can be made online at: www.sparc.org. nz/volunteers.

Classy surfing at Ahipara winds-up scholastic challenge The third and final event of the 2011 Northland Scholastic Surfing Series took place in the classic point waves of Shipwreck Bay, Ahipara last month. In the girls division, Mangawhai Head’s friends Alana Thrasyvoulou, Julia Smith and Robyn Turnbull battled it out. The three Rodney College students showed why girls surfing in Northland is on the rise. Turnbull, who won event two at Sandy Bay, started off the final with a couple of reasonable lefts but didn’t really get going in the heat. The standout of the final and division winner was goofy footer and event one winner Alana Thrasyvoulou. Louie Smith In the Under 14 boys division, National Champion Manu ScottArrieta (Whangarei Boys High School) continued his dominance winning with ease. The down to earth goofy footer from Sandy Bay relished in the punchy low tide lefts, winning the series, three from three. In second place was young Mangawhai Heads surfer Ryan Renall (Rodney College). New coach at helm
We farewell our Sports columnist Simon Mills this month, who has taken up a teaching offer at an international school, run by the United Nations, in Vietnam. We thank him for his column contributions and the enthusiasm he displayed for involving adults and children in local sport. Simon’s replacement is Tony Mordaunt, who is the new community sports coach manager for the Mahurangi Community Sport & Recreation Collective Inc. He introduces himself … I am looking forward to starting my new role and having the opportunity to make a difference to junior sport throughout the area. I will be delivering various sports into the local primary schools whilst providing teachers with resources and new coaching skills. I will be assisting various sports clubs in the upskilling of their coaches to enable them to provide a fun-filled experience for all the juniors involved. I am a proud father of two boys, aged seven months and nearly two years, and have lived in Warkworth for almost two years. I have been a professional coach for 20 years covering development and education, and have experience working in countries such as England, Denmark, South Korea and Malaysia. In 2005, I relocated from the UK to New Zealand to take up a position as CoachForce officer with North Harbour Badminton. In 2008, I was recruited to the role of development manager for Badminton Oceania. I was responsible for the delivery of coach education courses and seminars along with implementing an innovative project to recruit and develop a team of quality development managers and coaches across the Oceania region. For the last year I have worked for Harbour Sport and GACU (Greater Auckland Coaching Unit) as community coaching manager developing systems and plans for schools and clubs to improve recruitment, retention and recognition of coaches. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to assist in the development of coach delivery and the growth of junior sport. Tony can be contacted on tony@findmeacoach.co.nz.

Rodney locals storm touring World Cup Rugby roadshow
Despite cold temperatures and a 6.30am start, people turned out in force to be part of the Rugby World Cup Roadshow when it stopped at Orewa beach on Tuesday July 26. The three-hour event started under lights and almost a 1000 people passed through the Roadshow truck to have their photo taken with the Webb Ellis Cup. Along with plenty of locals, visitors included children from as far afield as Wellington and Christchurch. Residents put their stamp on proceedings, with events involving all ages, from the junior Silverdale Rugby Club members who won a tug-of-war against their Mahurangi Club rivals, to older residents organised by Age Concern, who put on a spirited display with a televised mobility scooter race. Other local entertainment included MC Red Beach Austin Powers impersonator Gary Brown, a Hibiscus Coast Hot Rodders car display, a team of Leisure Centre instructors, Maori kite-making, Pacific cheerleaders, Puhoi wood choppers and more. While the Sheepworld lambs were popular with the crowd, one was also responsible for the day’s only injury, biting the finger of TVNZ reporter and weather presenter Tamati Coffey who made five live links to TV One’s Breakfast show during the event. The team of the day was South Africa but it was participants dressed in support of Japan who claimed prizes of tickets to RWC games. Innovative use of a 97 cent tee shirt, big enough to be worn by two, won Whangaparaoa 15-year-olds Emily Clarke and Lilly Ander their tickets, while a sushi-costume, complete with chopsticks, proved successful for Silverdale Rugby Club member Riley Bonar, 8, of Kaukapakapa.
