Briefs Survey results analysed A draft Visitor Strategy for the Puhoi to Pakiri region will be released for initial review by the Puhoi to Pakiri Visitor Surveys steering committee about the middle of next month. The strategy draws on the 1260 web-based survey responses – 776 from visitors, 316 from community and 168 from business, which ran from last August to the end of April. A NZ Tourism Research Institute spokesperson says a public meeting will be held in August where the strategy will be released for final feedback. “The survey responses are currently going through a process of verification, but we’re certainly happy with the results,” the spokesperson said. Auckland Council’s budget lacks financial details Rodney’s Local Board has raised concerns with Auckland Council regarding the lack of detailed budget information contained in the 2011/12 Annual Plan. Board representative Tracey Martin, who gave a presentation to Council’s Strategy & Finance Committee on behalf of the board, said information was still required across Auckland Council on specific budget details, the details of programmes to be delivered in
Rodney, projects to be implemented by Council Controlled Organisations such as Auckland Transport and ATEED, and programmes being delivered on behalf of the governing body. The Warkworth Town Hall, Wellsford Library and Te Hana Cultural Centre were three projects highlighted by the board for funding priority. The board called for a feasibility study to be done on the hall and wants the Wellsford Library completed in one
financial year, rather than two. Support was given for the construction of public toilets, road re-sealing and upgrading of the main street in Te Hana. “These are only the major points we wanted them to deal with – all other monies in the draft document are to be retained and we have given Council a very large document showing our issues and smaller funding areas where we are asking for their support,” Tracey says.
Waiwera deferral The hearing of the proposal by Waiwera Valley Properties to build a bottling plant on Upper Waiwera Rd, which was to be held at the Auckland Council service centre in Orewa, from May 16–23, was postponed. A new date has not been set, but may be several months away. The proposal has drawn opposition from residents, who say it is against the District Plan to build an industrial plant in a rural area. Council planners have also recommended that it be declined.

Manager takes up post at Warkworth RSA The Warkworth and Districts RSA welcomed on board a new manager last month. Robbie Blair and his wife Helena, who is an artist, moved to Warkworth earlier this year for a lifestyle change. “We were ready for something new,” he says. “We had lived in the city for years. Our children are at the stage of completing university studies so it was a good time for us to move on.” Robbie was formerly the manager of the Parnell Lawn Tennis Club for six years and a member for 25 years. Before working at the club, he owned a number of music stores throughout Auckland, called CD Review. “As technology moved on I found less people were coming in to buy CDs. The industry was in decline so I closed the shops and took up the offer from the tennis club and had a fantastic time there.” Robbie says he looks forward to New RSA manager Robbie Blair would like to remind people that any person of continuing the RSA involvement in good character, 18 years an over, can join the RSA as an associate member with all normal membership privileges. the community. “In the first two weeks as manager I first tasks is to set up a weekly email beneficial sponsorship relationships with became aware of how much the RSA newsletter to keep the community up- local businesses as well.” does for the community and I want to-date with everything we do and what For further information: 425 8568 to ensure that continues. When the chairman at a recent local meeting stumbled over the correct pronunciation of ‘hydrographical’ survey ship, retired Royal NZ Navy commander Larry Robbins took it in his stride. “Don’t feel bad,” he said. “I was once introduced at a meeting in Auckland as the Royal NZ Navy’s commander of hydroponic services.” Mr Robbins OBE was also modest about his royal gong, saying that it actually stood for ‘Other Buggers’ Efforts’.
Times change Retired pharmacist Barry Lumsden gave an entertaining reflection on his working life at a recent Mangawhai Probus meeting. Demonstrating how times have changed, he said that when he signed his first contract with a health board at the start of his career, it was two pages long. By the time he retired, two years ago, it was a weighty tome of 150 pages.

Fundraising pays dividends for injured kiwi Business people A three-year-old female kiwi saved from death’s door owes her successful rehabilitation in part to an Omaha teenager whose fundraising efforts helped pay for her treatment. For the past two years fifteen-yearold Maisie MacDonald worked seven days a week for three weeks wrapping Christmas presents with materials donated by her parents’ Matakana shop Red Letter Day, raising over $2000 for the Auckland Zoo’s New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine (NZCCM). The funds were recently applied to the treatment of a kiwi called Marrison, whose leg was injured by a radio transmitter harness after a battery failed and conservation staff lost track of her. A park contractor found the injured bird and contacted open sanctuary coordinator for Auckland Council Northern Parks Matt Maitland but a free consultation with Warkworth vet Ross Lynch indicated she needed specialist treatment. “Her wound was quite severe and had we not pulled her from the wild she would be dead,” Matt says. NZCCM vet nurse Melanie Farrant said Marrison had recovered well and had proved to be a particularly “laid back” patient, despite requiring daily checks and treatment of her injury over a two month period. Before her release a new transmitter was attached to her other leg so she could be recaptured periodically to monitor her progress and Matt reports that almost a week after her release a health check Vet nurse Melanie Farrant with laid-back kiwi Marrison during her treatment at indicated she was “doing marvellously”. the NZ Centre for Conservation Medicine. invited to get their hands dirty Businesses in the area are being asked this month to donate either some staff time or some money to the Taniko Wetlands Scientific Reserve, on the edge of the upper Whangateau Harbour, near the Omaha causeway. The Department of Conservation is organising a tree planting and roadside clean-up on Wednesday, June 22, to mark Volunteer Awareness Week. Volunteer coordinator Sue Cameron says for the past two years, DOC staff, volunteers and a group of BNZ Closed for Good staff, have spent a few days planting in the reserve. “This year we invite the local business communities to either send along a staff member or two with a spade and sturdy boots, or to donate $20 to purchase 10 young, locally-sourced trees,” she says. The Omaha-Taniko reserve is a special area made up of intact, coastal kahikatea forest on stablised-sand. It is the only known example of this type of forest in the region. Sue says the purpose of the planting is to rehabilitate a part of the reserve formerly farmed and then covered in gorse. “The aim to is establish a canopy of manuka to suppress gorse regeneration, and under which the native forest can start to regenerate. The manuka will also provide more habitat for threatened species in the reserve such as North Island fernbird, banded rail and Auckland green gecko.” Info: Sue Cameron on 425 0978 or aucklandvolunteer@doc.govt.nz

Revegetation at Tawharanui By Steve Palmer
For a number of years there has been an active revegetation plan at Tawharanui Regional Park. The results of this planting clearly are of benefit to native birds and other wildlife but this is by no means the only benefit. Tawharanui remains a productive farm and there may appear to be a conflict between the farming operation and the revegetation plan, as the planting programme would seem to reduce the area available for farming. This is true if the total area in pasture is considered. However, the planting programme has been developed in order to preserve the most productive land, with planting being concentrated in less productive areas such as the gullies and riparian areas. Some wetland planting has occurred in what were productive areas in order to produce a cross section of native habitat, but such planting has been relatively limited. The importance of planting steep gullies, from both a farming and ecological viewpoint, was amply illustrated during the heavy rain over Auckland anniversary weekend. The slips that were so prominent throughout the Rodney District also occurred at Tawharanui and almost all occurred within steep gullies. Unfortunately, our planting programme was not sufficiently advanced to prevent these slips although there are areas where the plantings were mature enough to do so. Ironically, slips might offer an opportunity for natural revegetation as, in this district, natural revegetation is impaired by kikuyu grass. Where a slip has occurred kikuyu is slow to re-invade if clay is exposed. Natural revegetation can be encouraged by layering the area with manuka which, year-round, has an abundant supply of seed. We have started this process in a number of areas. In other areas where slips have not occurred we have little option but to continue with planting. Once again, we have raised thousands of plants in TOSSI’s nursery and these will soon be awaiting willing planters. Our first plantings will begin over Queen’s Birthday weekend with follow-up plantings on Sunday July 3 and August 7.

The repair and upgrade of the Omaha estuary seawall was identified through the Omaha Coastal Compartment Management Plan, adopted by Rodney District Council in 2003, as a significant item of work requiring attention. The CCMP determined that Council should formally adopt a comprehensive plan for the wall that could be implemented incrementally as sections of the wall failed and associated funding allowed.
New design for Omaha Seawall Auckland Council will seek resource Omaha seawall upgrade. The upgrade includes the removal of the previous seawall which contains asbestos sheeting, and a 200-metre extension using sand or mud-crete. The existing wall was built in the late 1970s as part of the original development of the spit and golf course. Auckland Council parks, sports and recreation manager Ian Murray says the new wall is designed to weather better and have a more natural appearance. “We will not be repeating the planting
consent soon for stage two of the bays, where there are two walls at varying levels,” he says. “We simply don’t have enough money and their success is questionable. We will be providing a slightly increased width along the top of the new wall to serve as a walkway.” Auckland Council has $100,000 to complete this next stage. Ian says the project will be tendered out to a local company and construction works are planned for 2012. Funds have been allocated in 2011/12 and 2012/13 to complete the work.
Opinions sought for give-way rules Submissions on the proposed changes to the give-way rules, due to come into force early next year, are now open. Submissions must be made by 5pm, June 24. The proposed changes are expected to reduce intersection crashes and improve safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Changes to the current give-way rules were identified last year as a road safety priority in the Government’s 10-year Safer Journeys strategy. Intersection crashes currently account for 17 percent of fatal crashes on NZ roads. In the 10 years to 2009, the number of crashes involving pedestrians and turning vehicles at intersections doubled. New Zealand’s current give way rules were introduced in 1977. Info: nzta.govt.nz Subscribe now at localmatters.co.nz for a free online newsletter. Residents decry Mansion House neglect “storage” in one room are stacked in corners and covered in dust. Mansion House has a Category I rating with the NZ Historic Places Trust, recognising it as a place of special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance. It has been in public ownership since 1979 and in 1986, it received a National Award-Conservation from the NZ Institute of Architects. Salmond Reed Architects, experts in heritage architecture and conservation, carried out a conservation plan for the house in 1992, which set out remedial works that needed to be done. A total of 37 recommendations were made. DOC Warkworth and Great Barrier area manager Tim Brandenburg says he believes a “fair amount would have been done by now” but couldn’t say specifically how many of the report’s recommendations had been implemented. In October 2009, Salmond Reed prepared a second report on the house called the Condition Assessment Report. Outlined in that report was a list of prioritised remedial work. Despite the re-roofing of the mine manager’s wing being given high priority, it has yet to be done. However, Tim says it will be completed in the next financial year. “We have asked for $600,000 which is what the architects tendered for the repair of the roof, exterior painting and water management,” Tim says.
“Last year, $104,000 was spent on implementing a maintenance plan, staff time on the island, cleaning of the house and artifacts, and specialist advice. “What it comes down to is money. There is a national pool of funds available for repairing historical structures and just because Mansion House has been identified as needing work done, doesn’t mean it will happen. “A total of $32,000 worth of urgent repair to water-damaged parts of the house and structural stabilisation of the verandah posts was completed last year. Before we repair the interior, we need to continue making the exterior water tight.” The Louis Wintle Charitable Trust owns the furniture in Mansion House and trustee Frank Arnott says the condition of the entire reserve concerns him. “The coppermine chimney and Mansion House are not being conserved in the condition they should be,” he says. “Both have continued to deteriorate over the years and are getting worse despite the numerous reports and assessments that outline what needs to be done. DOC has let both of these extremely important heritage sites to fall into ruin.” The 220ha reserve also includes four small residences. Mr Edkins says they were once in good condition and used by rangers. However, one is now uninhabitable and the others are also showing signs of neglect.

The abandoned coppermine chimney, which is also deteriorating, is an important part of the Mansion House reserve. Examples of the house’s deterioration are not hard to find. More photos localmatters.co.nz
Mr Edkins says he would like to see the four small residences used as backpackers, accommodation or a place to rent kayaks. “The houses could be used as social areas for the island instead of being left to rot.” Both Mr Edkins and Mr Arnott would like Mansion House restored and used as both a tourist destination and a place where children can learn about the island’s rich history. Viewpoint with Penny Webster, Rodney Councillor, Auckland Council
Delivering on promises
More than six months after the creation of the new Auckland Council, many of you are still asking me: “Is the new council really working, and what is it doing for people like me here in the north of the new Auckland? Well, last week we got our first indication that it really is starting to work for us. The government left us in November with a structure that would have meant rates increases of 9.3 percent across Auckland. The Mayor some time ago decreed that there would be a maximum rates increase of 4.9 percent. Depending on your views about Len Brown and the new council, he would have either shocked or pleasantly surprised you recently when he announced that there would be a base rates increase of 3.7 percent – that is below the current rate of consumer inflation – with a final result somewhere below four percent. To achieve that, the council has found savings of $81 million without cutting services or capital projects though Penlink could be in danger. Now that is something to be pleased about, and particularly when you compare it with the difficulty the Government had delivering its Budget. That doesn’t mean everything is rosy at the new council or as good as it should be. Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse recently drew criticism for stating the obvious – the government threw the new council together with undue haste and we are still having to deal with the consequences. However, slowly but surely everything is starting to come together. All 21 local boards recently met individually with councillors to discuss the Annual Plan. The determination from both sides to work together to ensure the best outcomes for ratepayers locally and across the new Auckland gave me great heart. I have to say the presentation from our local board was outstanding. There will always be issues however. One of them for us in the north is transport and the so-called Holiday Highway. You and I know that stretch of road is about more than holidays. It’s about our livelihood. I understand that the Mayor has a number of transport priorities to balance and that this route may not be on top. However, it is another story for the Labour Party to announce that it would shelve the project indefinitely. Labour candidates in this area can expect a frosty response from voters.

No decision should be made on closing the northern rail line until a business case has been developed for the whole of Northland, according to National Party candidate for Northland Mike Sabin. Commenting on a KiwiRail announcement that the line could be mothballed next year, Mr Sabin says the decision should not be made hastily. “There is no better time to invest in infrastructure than now,” he says. “If we want to develop Northland’s potential for forestry and agriculture, then it makes sense to have an alternative to roading. “If you’re looking at it over a five or 10 year timeframe, then perhaps the viability is questionable. Tackling winter sporting injuries head on
Good Food that’s Gluten Free
While sports offer numerous health benefits to participants, as winter codes get underway emergency medical departments will brace for an influx of sports-related injuries of varying severity. Of around 1.7 million new claims ACC receives annually, last financial year, approximately 340,000 were sportsrelated (about 28,000 per month) costing the scheme up to $400 million. Common injuries include concussion, shoulder injuries, hamstring strains, knee sprains and ankle injuries. ACC’s team manager public safety, Simon Gianotti says that although a significant proportion of claims are for minor injuries, often requiring no more than a single visit to the doctor, injury prevention remains a top priority. Sports that either generate high volumes of claims or more severe injuries, namely rugby union, soccer, netball and rugby league are the primary focus. However, it’s acknowledged that those with the most claims aren’t necessarily the most dangerous sports, but may simply have a high number of people taking part. As sports injuries often result from a number of conditions and circumstances, rather than a single factor, a ‘SportsSmart’ 10-point action plan has been developed with the help of relevant experts and tailored to the specific demands of each of the
developed an ActiveSmart programme to help address the risk of injury associated with increased participation in social/recreational activities such as fun runs, cycle events, multisport events and general fitness, where people are harder to reach, because of the more informal, ad hoc participation in what is often an unregulated environment. Each site contains a range of injury prevention information, from hydration, nutrition and training guidance to tips on warm-up and cool-down exercises. ACC’s RugbySmart initiative is among injury prevention success stories. Endorsed by All Black coach Graham Henry and adopted internationally, it educates coaches to ensure players are physically and technically prepared for the game and makes them aware of injury prevention and management strategies. Since it was introduced in 2001, the number of serious spinal and brain injuries in the sport has reduced from more than 10 a year to less than three a year, with an overall 15 percent decrease in all moderate to serious injuries, even as player numbers have increased.
Ensuring injuries don’t outweigh the benefits of sport demands attention to a range of factors from training technique to good nutrition.

Smoking is the commonest cause of preventable death in this country. About 20 percent of New Zealanders still smoke and 40 percent of Maori smoke. One in two smokers will die of smoking related disorders. This amounts to about 4500 NZ deaths per year. The Ministry of Health’s aim is to halve the number of smokers in NZ by 2015 and to make Aotearoa smoke free by 2025. The main way of doing this is by increasing tobacco taxes, introduced in April 2010 and to be increased again this year. This has worked well so far, with more people presenting to Quit Line and to GPs for smoking cessation advice. Government initiatives have also focused on smoking cessation medications. These mediations have been expensive but now different levels of Government subsidies apply. 1. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – This comes as patches, gums or lozenges. NRT doubles the chance of quitting. It is safe and does not increase the risk of cancer. Side effects are minor and most people can use it safely. One should not use NRT and smoke at the same time. NRT is fully subsidised if accessed through Quit Line or your doctor and a course will cost approx $3. 2. Zyban (Bupropione) – This more than doubles the chance of quitting. It works by reducing the desire to smoke. It should be started while still smoking, about two weeks before quit date and is continued for a 12-week course. In some countries Zyban is used as an antidepressant and as such it has more side effects and drug interactions than NRT and some people cannot take it. It is prescribed by your doctor and now has government funding without restriction. 3. Champix (Varenicline) – Studies have shown Champix to be the most effective smoking cessation medication. Like Zyban, it reduces the desire to smoke; in addition it also gives smokers some of the satisfied feeling that smoking imparts. It is taken in the same way as Zyban. Champix can accentuate some of the side effects of smoking cessation such as headache, nausea, abnormal dreams and poor sleep. There have been some reports of depression and even possibly an increase in suicidality. There are no known drug interactions. Champix is expensive, about $200 per month and should be taken for three months. In some cases, if other forms of medication have been trialled and failed, and if the patient is partaking in a smoking cessation program, a government subsidy can be accessed by your doctor. Psychological support from a trained health profession is effective. Most GP surgeries offer smoking cessation programmes at affordable prices.

Blood reveals health secrets
The importance of drinking water was emphasised at a recent Warkworth Men’s Probus meeting. Naturopath Judi Denham delivered a talk Be Smart and recommended drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning and two glasses two hours before a main meal. She said the amount of water a person should drink depended on their weight. Another newer method of taking a better view of your health was Hemaview, a form of blood screening. Using only two drops of blood a health practitioner can use Hemaview to investigate the size, shape and ratios of the red cells, white cells and platelets in your blood. Midwives help push for natural health start A natural approach to pre-natal and post-natal care is being promoted through a joint Kakariki Health Store–Otamatea and Rodney midwives initiative. Launched last month, the yearlong programme will involve giving mothers-to-be information and samples of natural products which offer an alternative to some conventional over-the-counter treatments. Midwife Kate Rankin says pregnancy is a good time to get across health messages. “Parents are often a lot more motivated and receptive to advice at this time,” she says. “It’s often when they are prepared to commit to making lifelong changes which will benefit both them and their baby.” Kate says midwives regularly come across cases where babies have had an allergic reaction to everyday pharmaceutical products. “Reactions to some brands of baby oil, baby wash and wet wipes are particularly common.” Kakariki owner Jess Costello says parabens and sodium laureth sulfate are two chemicals, in particular, that should be avoided. “The packs introduce mothers to a range of products that are chemical-

free,” she says. “These include mother and baby massage oils, nappy creams and laundry powder. A lot of the product is also made by NZ companies such as The Herb Farm, Ecostore, Kiwiherb and Tui Balms. “We chose to distribute the packs to midwives as they are the primary
caregivers for the majority of pregnant women in rural areas. If you go to your GP when you’re pregnant, you’re given a pack with samples, but it is surprising how much of the product supplied is full of chemicals and there is absolutely no information available about other options.”
Watch those crystals
Consumer Affairs is warning parents to take care with crystal ornaments and glass around the sun. The ornament can magnify and focus the light and heat from the sun causing scorching or even a fire. The department recently had a call from a mother who was dealing with the aftermath of a scorched teddybear. Understandably, she was worried that it could have been a lot worse.

While at KingsWay School, Helen designed the Interact Curriculum for Christian and Catholic schools, a biblically-based and integrated programme of learning for students in years 1-8. It is used in around 40 schools in NZ, as well as overseas. Helen is an international speaker on matters of curriculum and teaching and is a founding director of the Laidlaw College School of Education. Making parenting incredible A parenting programme designed to enhance positive family relationships, which empowers parents to make change and helps them to better manage difficult behaviour, is being offered in Warkworth. The Incredible Years course is a practical step-by-step programme for parents of three to eight year olds to help handle everyday family situations. Dr Carolyn Webster-Stratton, of the US, developed the programme and evaluations show that it is effective in significantly improving parent-child interactions, reducing parents use of violent forms of discipline and reducing child conduct problems. The date and venue are yet to be confirmed, but the course is likely to start towards the end of this month. It will be run from 10am - 12.30pm, and limited free childcare is available. Schools gear-up for nights to remember Ball beauty takes practise
College students are gearing up for the biggest event on their social calendars. It’s school ball season; a chance for students and teachers to dress to the nines and experience a glamorous evening. Streamers, strobe lights, balloons, corsages, gossip and excitement are a few of the elements that add to the atmosphere of the evening. Students from Mahurangi College in Years 12 and 13 will be attending the school ball, which will be held at Ascension on August 20. The evening will include a formal dinner, followed by a live band and dancing. Mahurangi College Year 13 dean Marilyn Newlove says for security reasons, students will be breathalysed and frisked on arrival. “It is to ensure the safety of all students at the ball,” she says. “They are under the school’s supervision from the moment they arrive until the end of the evening, and we need to be aware of any potential problems.” Although a theme for the Mahurangi ball is still to be decided by the students, Rodney College pupils in Years 11 to 13 will dress for an oriental night on July 2. Their school ball will be held at the Wellsford Community Centre.
For anyone thinking of doing their own make-up for the ball, the advice from the experts is do a practise run at least a week before the big event. This takes the pressure off on the night, if you already know you have the make-up you need and how you want to apply it. Take into consideration the colour, design and length of the dress before making any decisions. A bold lip colour would complement a black, white or neutral coloured dress. Try a classic red or fuchsia pink. Foundation should match the skin tone exactly and a primer should be applied to help make-up last the entire evening. Mineral powder foundations are easy to apply and give a striking finish, alternatively use a light layer of liquid foundation set with a translucent powder. To give the skin some warmth, dust with bronzing powder. Lipstick lasts longer than gloss and gives a deeper hit of colour. Bright lip-gloss can be used for a softer look. Prep lips the night before with plenty of lip balm so they are moisturised and ready for lip colour.
With school ball season on its way, it’s time to think about make-up and hair, suits, dresses and who the belle of the ball will be. Photos, Kodak Express Warkworth

Agencies issue warnings of tough after-ball consequences As the school ball season approaches, colleges are being warned about the issues and risks school communities face in respect to ‘after-ball’ functions and events. The Auckland District Licensing Agency, in conjunction with Auckland Council and the New Zealand Police, have written to more than 100 schools, asking them to tell parents and students that events where tickets are sold and alcohol is served to anyone underage are illegal. The letter outlines the dangers and potential consequences of an after ball function. Of particular concern is the sale or supply of alcohol to minors and the uncontrolled, unlimited supply of alcohol to young people aged over 18. The level of secrecy that operates around the organisation of after-ball events is also a concern. The agency and Police say that the use of buildings such as warehouses in industrial areas that do not have resource consents or building codes, poses a level of risk to the attendees in the event of a fire, overcrowding
and gate-crashing. Prosecution of the building owner or lease holder could also be sought under the Sale of Liquor Act. Mahurangi Year 13 dean, Marilyn Newlove and Rodney College principal Dave Ormandy, have both said their schools will not be ‘hosting’ an after ball. The District Licensing Agency and Police say they will take action to prevent such large gatherings from happening. “Small home gatherings of friends with families after the ball are acceptable and reduce the risk of significant harm to the community. Large gatherings too often result in significant disorder, leading to immense pressure on policing resources as a result of alcoholrelated offending including violence, drink driving, severe intoxication requiring medical intervention and other related alcohol harms.” Attached to the letter was a ball advisory sheet so that the agencies and Police are aware of the dates of the upcoming balls, allowing them to respond accordingly if events occur.
The language of flowers Corsages add the final touch to a girl’s attire on the evening of the ball. They can either be worn at the shoulder, in the hair, on the wrist or pinned to the dress. Tradition follows that males buy the corsages for their date. Ideally, the colour of the corsage flowers should match the girls dress. Corsages can come in a variety of styles and colours, and men can also wear a matching buttonhole. Sweetheart roses, white roses and certain orchids are always popular for create decorative body flowers.

Royal wedding gown design has influence on ball fashion Even before the recent wedding of Prince William and Kate Middelton, when the dress was still a closely guarded secret, ballgown fashions were being influenced by the flavour of the event. As a result, more conservative styles became popular, with more girls seeking classic, feminine couture dresses for this season’s balls. While last season many Year 13 college students were wearing short dresses to their balls, as most had worn a long dress at their Year 12 ball, retailers report that this year long and floaty styles remain in favour, even for a second ball. All shades of blue, especially royal blue, through to mauves, deep purple and hot pink are the most popular colours. The move towards a more sophisticated look, influenced by the royal wedding, has led to less bling on dresses and a preference for sleek, sheer designs that hug the body. Strapless and off the shoulder styles are in vogue. Short boys better look out, as their dates will be wearing heels that go with this couture look – some as high as 12 centimetres. Short gloves, fake fur wraps and large cocktail rings complete the look.

Actor, poet and Warkworth bookstore owner Richard Wasley died peacefully at home on May 19, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born in Gloucester England, Richard’s first encounter with the theatre came during a Sunday School visit to a London play. His sister Jackie O’Rourke says for many years, Richard kept the programme from the play, which featured a young actress Illona Rodgers. Little did they know then that they would eventually both come to live in Warkworth, on the other side of the world. When the two became good friends, Richard gave Illona the programme. After schooling at Elmbridge Junior and Central Boys Technical, Richard went on to study drama with the Birmingham Theatre School. By 25 he was working in a number of productions with the Birmingham Theatre Company, Crewe Repertory and Forbes Russell Technical. He had small parts in the television series’ United and Z Cars, as well as in the feature films Time of Spears and The Pressure. It was his acting career that led him to NZ in the mid-1980s. He was a founding member of the Occam Theatre Company, which toured small towns in the North Island in the late 1980s. In a car, plus trailer for props and scenery, the company put on small cast plays such as Harold Pinter’s The Lover. Richard also toured a one-man show Hess and read poetry at schools. Eventually, he quit his roving ways and settled in Warkworth where he opened his second-hand bookstore called the Unicorn Bookshop, first located in a small building in Alnwick Street. Jackie said that on the first day the shop opened, Richard sold $300 worth of books just while trying to stack the shelves. A remembrance book in the current shop, in Neville Street, bears testimony to the many customers who travelled from far and wide to browse the shelves for the often hard-to-find books that were Richard’s stock in trade. The comments paint a picture of a man who was a great conversationalist, often with strong views, who was appreciated as both a businessman and a friend. He is survived by his mother Edith, sister Jackie and long-time friend Carli.
Singing for rail improvements Impressed by Australia’s user-friendly rail system, and frustrated by the lack of rail transport in NZ, country songwriter and rail supporter Keith Clapham penned the song Back Train Going. Keith is a member of the Wellsford Country Music Club and a strong supporter of the group advocating to save the northern rail line from being mothballed. He travels to Australia to see family whenever he can and enjoys the train ride from Perth to Rockingham. “It’s brilliant going on the train in Australia,” he says. “Then you get back to NZ and you can’t just catch the train home. I get so frustrated with the road conditions and the traffic congestion here.” (See page 11 for Northland candidate Mike Sabin’s comments on the rail line)

Bachelors to battle for top honours at Hamilton Fieldays They may not all still be bachelors but former Rural Bachelor of the Year winners will be back in the spotlight in the first ever Best of the Best Rural Bachelor competition at this year’s National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek Events Centre, south of Hamilton from June 15-18. Eight previous winners, including Dargaville dairy farm manager/owner, 2008 Golden Gumboot winner Mark Woodcock, will compete in challenges including fencing, horse handling, general knowledge, dog handling and excavating over the four days of Fieldays. The public will have a say, as well as judges, before the premier champion is announced in the Ag Art Wear Pavilion at noon on June 18. Other action-packed crowd favourites include the tractor pull competitions, fencing championships and Festival of Logging while agricultural creativity is exercised through the Ag Art Wear Show and the No8 Wire National Art Award. The Innovations Centre will reveal Kiwi ingenuity through a variety of practical inventions which range from a three-way multi-tool to a rapid milk chiller and heat recovery unit as competitors go head to head for over $13,000 in prizes.
This year’s Premier Feature will focus on breaking barriers to productivity and include key sponsor Primary Wool Cooperative demonstrating strategies for creating a higher return on wool. Visitors can also learn from the University of Waikato seminar series on everything from soil testing to animal health and applying technology to increase farm profits. Demonstrations include X-air extreme Suzuki motor cross, a canine show, old west cowboy horse handling, cuisine skills, machinery, stock handling and more, while entertainment will include cheerleaders and live music. Developed by the not-for-profit National Fieldays Society and sponsored by ANZ and the University of Waikato, Fieldays is the largest agribusiness exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere featuring 1,000 exhibitors, over 98 acres of exhibitor space and 170 acres of parking and contribute approximately $600 million annually to national economy. The first national Fieldays was held at Te Rapa Racecourse in 1969 and attracted 15,000 people, now in its 43rd year the event takes 18 months to plan, involves 38 staff, 150 volunteers and is expected to attract 120,000 visitors from about 38 countries.
2008 Golden Gumboot winner Dargaville’s Mark Woodcock will battle it out for the title of Best of the Best Rural Bachelor.
Competitive fencing will be among practical and entertaining demonstrations.

Nearly losing an eye to an electric fence standard or “pigtail” was the motivation for Mangawhai’s Geoff Pearson to invent a product that’s proved popular with farmers and is now entering its fourth successful year at Fieldays. After growing up on a dairy farm, living on a lifestyle block and using pigtails to create temporary fencing for crowd control, he knew from personal experience that handling the ungainly items was “a pain in the butt”. However, it wasn’t until he was hurriedly grabbing a couple from a barrel and one flicked up and gouged him in the forehead, that his PiggyStak invention was born. Geoff began experimenting with a piece of reinforcing steel before moving on to aluminium and launching the prototype at Fieldays Innovations 2007. The product’s ability to keep up to 20 pigtails untangled, easy to carry and ready to use, along with an electric fence reel, met with the instant approval of farmers. “It’s a product you’ve really got to see in action, otherwise it doesn’t make sense,” he says. rack designed to hold the PiggyStaks will also be launched at Fieldays. Geoff currently fits the PiggyStak business, around his full-time work with adventure activities company ROCKUP. Around 3000 have been sold to date and to keep them affordable Geoff makes them himself. He says New Zealand manufacturing costs are a major hurdle to being commercially competitive on a large scale and is aware that, despite having patented his product, there’s a risk it could be copied. However, he says that while others often can’t “think outside the square” to solve a problem, he constantly has ideas that could be developed. “I guess I’m a solutions-based thinker. I could probably launch three or four products every year but it’s a matter of having time and money to be able to do it,” he says. It’s not the first time Geoff ’s ideas have resulted in a practical product. Airbarn, an inflatable barn he designed in response to the need for instant protection of hay bales, made its Fieldays debut in 2003 and continues to be sold for use as a temporary structure for a range of applications including shelter, storage and events. His advice to others with great ideas is simple. “You need to be passionate about what it is that you’ve done, because that will sell your product far more than anything else. You might have the best idea in the world and create the best product in the world, but unless it’s marketed it’s the best kept secret in the world.”

Tips ‘n’ tricks for first-timers If you’ve never been to the national Fieldays before but would like to try the experience, we’ve listed some tips to get you up to speed with the regulars. yy You can buy tickets online in advance and they’re cheaper if you buy two or more. yy Gates open at 8am and close at 5pm – allow time to get in and out with the crowd. yy There will be a bus service to Fieldays from Hamilton, the website will list times closer to the event. yy There’s free parking but there are thousands of cars, so take note of exactly where you are parked (a ribbon or balloons on an aerial or roof rack can help). yy An online Interactive Map and Trip Planner are available at fieldays. co.nz. A daily timetable will also be available closer to the event. yy A Fieldays iPhone app is free from the iTunes store. yy To get the best deal check out all the exhibitors before making purchase decisions. A two-day pass (only available online) allows you to do your homework on the first day and buy on the second. yy It can get muddy when it’s wet so choose shoes or boots. Plastic ponchos are compact to carry and
cover you and packages if it rains. yy Dress children in something distinctive to help you spot them in the crowd yy Lost and found is in the services building behind Fieldays HQ yy If you buy something heavy or bulky there’s a free courier service that will pick up your purchase and keep it at Gate 2 (the main gate) for you to collect between 8.30am and 4pm yy There’s plenty of food on offer from takeaway snacks and coffee to a sit down lunch but there are often queues at peak times. Entertainment Boulevard (E Street) is a place you can watch some entertainment while you eat. yy You can text to vote for your favourite Innovation, Ag Art creation and Rural Bachelor Best of the Best Competition. yy Mobility scooters are available for free use at Fieldays if you book in advance. (phone 07 854 9236) yy Parents’ Rooms with microwave, hot water and changing tables can be found in the amenities block of the Mystery Creek Pavilion and in the Service Building yy ANZ has an onsite bank as well as an ATM and mobile banking services but most exhibitors offer Eftpos at their stands.

Wine rationalisation spawns innovation in clean-up work
3.5T Digger 5T Truck
The rationalisation of some wine operations in the area has created an opportunity for a bit of innovation. Several vineyards have trimmed back on their acreages under vines, mainly for lifestyle reasons or in response to an over-supply in the NZ wine market. Mike Hinchco, of the family-run Hinchco Wines, says his decision to take out about an acre of vines was a lifestyle decision. “As the market is at the moment, you either stay small, get big or get out,” he says. “We’ve still got 2500 vines, which is adequate for what we want to produce.” Contour Estate, in Takatu Road which only produces a reserve syrah, pulled their vines out three years ago and replaced them with olives and fruit trees. The winery, when it’s producing, is now taking fruit from other Matakana growers, as well as the Hawkes Bay. Owner Bruce Taylor says the worst thing that a winery could do in the present climate would be to produce inferior wine. “It’s a lot easier to make decisions about whether or not to make wine,

when you haven’t got 5000 to 6000 plants in the ground,” he says. Matakana Winegrowers president Robin Ransom says that while some vineyards such as Contour Estate and Matakana Estate have removed vines, overall he’s not aware of any decrease in vineyard acreages. “In some cases, there’s actually expansion,” he says. “We’re one of the few vineyards in NZ planting a new Spanish white grape called albarino. We started with a small plot a couple of years ago, and put in a further couple of acres this year.” For those who are rationalising their operations by removing vines, fencing contractor Malcolm Webster, who exhibited in last year’s Fieldays, has come up with a unit that makes it easier to remove vineyard wires and fence posts. The unit fits on most tractors, including the narrow tractors normally used in vineyards, and can be operated safely by one person. “We trialled the unit on Hinchco’s property last year and it reduces the time needed to remove wires and posts by about half,” Malcolm says. The unit was built by Encon Engineering at Snells Beach.

Tractor-pull champion Chanika Hallett and her tractor “Heavy Metal” have been leading the charge for women in the sport. More photos at localmatters.co.nz
Teenager has pulling power A Mahurangi West teenager is making a big impact in the high-powered tractor-pull events at agricultural shows, surprising other competitors, not only with top performances, but also by being a girl. Chanika Hallett is the only female currently competing in the sport in New Zealand and was enticed into the driver’s seat after observing her father Mark competing for the past seven years. Since taking top honours in her first outing at Hawera’s Egmont Show 18 months ago, she’s been hooked on the challenge and adrenaline rush of the sport, competing at Central Districts and National Fieldays, taking home a trophy every time. Chanika says she’s happy to be doing something “different”, and beating the boys is a bonus. Other competitors often don’t take her seriously until after they’ve seen her in action. Her three-tonne tractor “Heavy Metal” has a petrol and nitrous oxide system (NOS) driven, slightly modified V8 Mopar engine, capable of up to 600hp. It is hitched to a special sled progressively loaded with as much as 20 tonnes until the tractor can’t continue or completes a “full pull” of 100m. The
task is made increasingly harder until a winner is found. Most of each 12-15 second pull is done without steering, as the front wheels of the tractor commonly lift off the ground. However, Mark says it’s a very safe form of motorsport, which begins and ends slowly due to the progressively heavier sled. Chanika has only once had to employ the kill switch after her wheels wouldn’t stop spinning at the end of a race, emptying a whole bottle of NOS over the engine and freezing the carburettor in the process. However, the incident didn’t put her off. She also enjoys a friendly rivalry with her older step-brother, Ryan Lott, who competes on the same tractor. Both will take part in three modified progressive tractor-pull events each day throughout the Fieldays at Mystery Creek. A part-time student, Chanika also plays netball and soccer and is hoping a soccer-related wrist injury will have healed before the Fieldays competition begins. With only about 15 modified tractors competing nationally, Mark plans to get his second tractor “Puhoi Thunder” back in action soon and is keen to see more people join in.

Volunteers have been spreading the Coastguard message in the district recently, with a number of public events. Many people took the opportunity during an Open Day, at the Warkworth Wharf, to board the rescue vessel and see its operational workings and learn more about being a volunteer. The service is always keen to recruit new crew members, preferably those who are experienced in handling boats, willing to undertake boat and medical training, and prepared to dedicate a considerable amount of time to the cause. Volunteers also participated in the MayDay Awareness campaign, distributing 250 quiz booklets and colouring sheets to 13 schools in the Rodney area. The Warkworth ASB bank hosted a Coastguard display

Patriotism reigns supreme News of the upcoming Matakana Heritage Day on Sunday, June 19, at the Matakana Hall, has been welcomed by the Warkworth & Districts Museum. An interesting piece of Matakana history is contained in the neatly kept pages of the minute book of the Matakana Diamond Jubilee Park committee. The story is recorded of a patriotic community finding a practical way to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 by providing recreational space for future generations. Accepting the offer of land owned by the Cruickshank brothers, the first committee paid £94 for 9-acres 1-rood 25-perches. Funds were found from subscriptions and a government grant and ongoing income came from grazing and hire charges. Conveyance of the land to the trustees took place on 10 November 1900 and by 1903, the park was debt free. The Rodney Mounted Rifles, who applied in 1909 to erect a building to serve as an orderly room, were one of the groups to use the land. In 1910, it was resolved to erect a Kissing Gate next to the main entrance and in 1911, the Rodney Rugby Union was granted leave to charge for some matches providing that the charge was no more than sixpence, and ladies were given

free admission. Tenders were called in 1918 to sow a field of oats with the condition that the land was left bare by a given date. At this time the community was mourning the loss of sons and brothers killed in World War I. Matakana people subscribed to create a suitable
memorial. A New Zealand sculptor W.H. Feldon, who had also crafted the Te Arawa memorial in Rotorua, was engaged. The statue using Oamaru stone, and featuring the reigning monarch King George V, was situated close to the entrance to the village and was unveiled in December 1919.

Mahurangi College Year 12 student Michael Winiana has been placed second in a national Heads Up for Kids competition, run by Lions NZ. People were asked to nominate a young person they believed would benefit from an outdoor education scholarship and the nominee was asked to supply a creative image using old money. Michael was nominated by her whanau teacher Ian McHale, who stated that he thought a voyage on the Spirit of NZ would be a wonderful opportunity to reward a hard working, good humoured and enthusiastic student. Michael is involved in extracurricular activities including speech competitions, netball, touch and kapa haka, and was recently selected for the NZ U17 touch team to go to Australia this year. All entries were loaded to the Heads Up for Kids Facebook page and people were asked to ‘like’/vote for one. Michael’s prize included a Kodak pocket camera and a Spirit of Adventure voyage.

Warkworth retailers throw support behind festival
INTR ODUCING n
Energy Smart Solutions Seven years ago, Jeff Cole and his family bought a home in the bush, but soon found that it was “unbearably damp, cold and mouldy”. “We were seriously considering selling after one winter as we couldn’t even heat the house,” Jeff says. “By chance, a friend was attending a presentation on a ventilation system and they invited us along to hear the pitch. As a last ditch effort, we decided to try the system. “The difference was incredible.” Jeff was so impressed, that nine months later he sold his business to get involved in selling ventilation systems. After a couple of years, the company Jeff had now established, expanded to include heat pumps. “It was the perfect fit – one dries and warms your home for next to nothing and the other is the cheapest way to heat and cool your premises with the technology available today.” Jeff says there is no excuse for any home or office not being warm, dry and healthy. He and his family recently fulfilled a long-held dream to live in the country. Energy Smart Solutions is now based in Kaiwaka and is establishing the

Our job is to evaluate your place, outline the options available and leave the decision to you. “Clients tend to know what the issues are, and once you explain what these systems can do to improve these issues, the products sell themselves.”

Insuring against disaster
What have Canterbury and Northland got in common? Not earthquakes. Not the hot dry nor-wester. Not vast areas of flat land. Not a magnificent coastline. But a large number of Earthquake Commission claims? Canterbury had two terrible earthquakes but Northland had Cyclone Wilma at the end of January 2011 that caused a surprising amount of significant property damage, particularly to steep coastal sites. EQC has provided a means by which landowners with damaged property can claim for loss of property or for reinstatement of the land. The Earthquake Commission Act (1993) provides the governing legislation. EQC covers only residential properties. To be covered by EQC insurance you must hold a current fire insurance policy with a private insurer. The private insurer will collect a premium on behalf of the EQC. EQC cover has a maximum claim amount of $100,000 plus GST for dwellings and up to $20,000 plus GST for personal effects. Private insurers will cover the amount beyond the EQC cover up to the limit of the cover you have on your house and contents policy. EQC insurance will cover earthquakes, natural landslips, volcanic eruption, and hydrothermal activity, tsunami and fire caused by these disasters. For residential property, storms and floods are also covered. Claims have to be made within 30 days of the event. If your home is insured EQC also insures some of your land. This cover is limited and is restricted to land that is within your property boundary and comprises only: yy The land under your home yy The land within 8 metres of your dwelling or buildings that serve the dwelling. yy The land of your main access way(or under the main access way) up to 60 metres from your home but not the driveway or artificial surfaces like concrete or asphalt that cover the access way. Cover is available for retaining walls, bridges and culverts within these areas but the cover is less than the replacement value. Payment of claims of land is based on a professional valuation – the area of land equal to the minimum sized allotment within a particular area is adopted as the minimum land area. If the land can be repaired for less than the value at the time of damage then that is the sum EQC will pay. For further information: www.eqc.govt.nz/downloads/pdfs/claims-guide

Park ‘n’ ride parked Auckland Transport has asked for more time to conclude negotiations with neighbouring landowners as part of its resource consent application for the Silverdale park ‘n’ ride. Auckland Council agreed last month to extend the timeframe for assessing the consent, so a decision regarding public notification is on hold. Auckland Transport hopes to have 100 car parking spaces available at the busway station in time for the Rugby World Cup in September. Around 4.2 ha of a 6.5 ha site at 1 Hibiscus Coast Highway in Silverdale was obtained by Rodney District Council, under the Public Works Act, late last year and will allow for a maximum of 400 car parks.

Legends take Ascension stage
Some of the biggest names in country music will take to the stage at Ascension Wine Estate on Saturday June 18. The True Legends of New Zealand country music show features Gray Bartlett, Eddie Low, Brendan Dugan and Jodi Vaughan and their All Star Band. They will be performing the songs of four of the world’s country music legends – Eddie Low will sing Roy Orbison, Brendan Dugan performs the music of Johnny Cash, Jodi Vaughan sings Dolly Parton’s top songs and Gray Bartlett plays Chet Atkins. Ascension owner Darryl Soljan says it’s unusual for such a big show to come to a relatively small place. “Usually you would need to go to a large town or city centre to see a show like this,” he says. “It’s great to provide a top quality show ‘up close and personal’, without any parking hassles.” Gray Bartlett
Fun for all at Leigh carnival Despite heavy overnight rain, hundreds of people turned up to the annual Leigh School Carnival on Easter Sunday. With attractions such as smoked fish raffles, a fine wine auction, ice slide, coconut shy, rides, stalls and mussel fritters cooked by gourmet chefs, there was plenty for visitors to enjoy. The Leigh Fire Brigade attended with their Wendy House and bouncy castle, teaching young children how to ‘get low and get out’ as well as the importance of smoke alarms. The school raised around $13,000 for reading and literacy programmes for each school level. The Leigh School PTA thanked the local businesses that sponsored the carnival.

Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult
For all the Jodi Picoult ‘closet’ fans out there, her latest book has arrived. Typically, it has a court case and the main characters tell the story and yet again Jodi touches on a controversial topic. What happens when a couple divorce, meet new partners and then begin a battle over the last three remaining frozen embryos? This is a thought-provoking novel with a mix of homosexual issues and evangelical values and will keep you guessing until the end. No matter how much we try to resist, we can’t help ourselves and we love getting lost in another Jodi Picoult novel.
The Conductor by Sarah Quigley
Sunday 26th June at 3pm, at Mahurangi College Hall, Warkworth
Tickets at door Adults $25 • Students Free • Info: 425 7313
It is June 1941 and as the German troops march on Leningrad we meet Quigley’s main characters – Dmitri Shostakovich, Russia’s most famous composer, and Karl Eliasaberg, the shy and introverted conductor of the second-rate Radio Orchestra. Music means everything to both of these men, but for quite different reasons and whilst they have much in common, it takes the siege of Leningrad and the eventual playing of Shostakovich’s epic Seventh Symphony to give them a sense of familiarity and perhaps even comradeship. Quigley describes the freezing conditions, the daily epic struggles to survive, and the beauty of the music with eloquence. Included with the book is the CD of the symphony that beautifully enhances the whole reading experience. Highly recommended.

Sport with Simon Mills
mahusport@gmail.com
Sports project given wheels The Mahurangi Community Sport and Recreation project has taken another step forward in its goal to increase participation in local sport, with the offer from Wilmot Motors to service and maintain its vehicle for the next two years. Many thanks to Dave Wilmot and his team at Wilmot Motors for their generosity. As an organisation relying on grants and community support, we appreciate this help enormously. Money saved by not having to service the van goes into equipment involved in coaching and teaching the children of Mahurangi. We are looking for sponsors to help with fuel costs for the van and also a uniform for our team. If you can Simon Mills (left) thanks Dave Wilmot help, let me know. for his sponsorship of a much-needed This term I am working in the schools van. helping teachers to take invasion games. These are games where teams invade each other’s territory. This not only includes our major winter codes such as hockey, rugby, netball, soccer and indoor basketball, but also strategy games such as capture the flag. For the younger students I am concentrating on the fundamental skills needed to play these games. With Years 4 upwards, concepts involved in team invasion games are learned along with skills. Concepts include ideas such as playing positions, passing to someone in a better position, marking an attacker when you are defending, and running into a space to receive a pass. More sophisticated concepts include drawing and passing, passing into space, working off the ball to receive a return pass. These skills apply in often similar ways to all winter team invasion games. One interesting observation I have made is the way the students who have played netball have a more advanced understanding of many of these concepts. It is possibly because netball rules dictate that players must stay in a defined area and cannot chase the ball all over the court. They also must pass to team-mates. This avoids the often amusing sight in very young children’s sport of “blanket sport” so called due to the fact that if you threw a blanket over the ball during the game, you would also cover every child in both teams at the same time. I often hear frustrated parents calling out to ‘spread out’ but if you were five years old, would you run away from where the fun is? Unless the game rules encourages players to use space they won’t do so. This is where modified games help to develop concepts such as positioning. Remember, children are not mini adults and they cannot see things on the field that we parents can see from the sideline.

The community sports coach programme Measuring rising sea levels impact
NIWA scientists are using special modelling techniques to build a long record of wave conditions from which they can predict future wave conditions. Scientist Dr Richard Gorman says the height of the waves relates to the danger facing coastal areas. Wave heights average three metres on a typical day, but reach over 10 metres at times. Dr Gorman says the NIWA research programme will develop and produce regional projections of waves, swells and storm surge on a national scale. These projections will support local government, engineering and planning consultants in making decisions about adapting to climate change in coastal areas. When completed, the information will be available to everyone through a new web-based system. The science will be completed in 2012. Background measurements from sea level recorders around New Zealand are available at niwa.co.nz/our-services/online-services/sea-levels

Winter indulgence
There is nothing more welcoming than coming in from the cold in the winter to a fireside dinner and June is a great time to look up our comfort food recipes. I like to make individual oven-baked dishes, which can be easily eaten with a fork off knees or on a tray and they also have the advantage of being able to be prepared earlier in the day. The following recipe is a very basic one which I encourage you to play with to add your own touches. I like to use a mixture of mushrooms, including reconstituted dry ones as they give an intense depth of earthy flavours. If possible don’t compromise on the quality of the cheese, but if unable to source fontina, gruyere or mozzarella make a suitable substitute. This is a wonderful vegetarian dish which even the most ardent of meat-eaters will enjoy on its own but it is also a nice side dish to accompany grilled meats or roasted chicken.
Baked Penne and Mushrooms 6 servings
1 teaspoon sea salt 250g fontina 1 cup Grana Padano, or Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated 4 tablespoons unsalted butter. 500g mixed mushrooms, cleaned & sliced 250g crème fraiche 500g penne 2 tablespoons Italian parsley, chopped

Preheat oven to 200C. Shred the fontina through the larger holes of a hand grater, and toss the shreds with 1/2 cup of the Grana Padano. Put 3 tablespoons of the butter in a large frypan and melt gently over a medium heat. When the butter begins to bubble, drop in the mushroom slices, stir with the butter, season with the salt, and spread the mushrooms out to cover the pan bottom. Let the mushrooms heat, without stirring, until they release their liquid and it comes to a boil. Cook the mushrooms, stirring occasionally as they shrivel and the liquid rapidly evaporates. When the pan bottom is completely dry, stir in the crème fraiche and bring to a boil. Cook for a minute or two to thicken slightly, then keep it warm over very low heat. Meanwhile, stir the penne into a large pan of boiling, salted water and cook until barely al dente. Ladle a cup of the pasta cooking water into the mushroom sauce and stir. Drain the pasta and drop into the cream-and-mushroom sauce. Toss the penne until all are nicely coated, then sprinkle over them the remaining 1/2 cup of Grana Padano and the chopped parsley. Toss to blend. Grease one large or 6 individual baking dishes with the last tablespoon of butter. Empty the sauce into the dish, spreading in a uniform layer. Smooth the top, and sprinkle the mixed fontina-Grana Padano evenly all over. Set the dish in the oven, and bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the cheese topping is crusty and deep golden brown and the sauce is bubbling up at the edges.

An Italian-themed dinner will be held in the Pt Wells Hall on July 8 to raise funds for Warkworth/Wellsford Hospice. The annual dinner will include a complimentary drink on arrival and sumptuous meal, along with excellent company and lots of fun. One of the organisers Gordon Simpson says that as in previous years, there will be both live and silent auctions supported by many businesses and individuals. Some of the auction items include a ‘grocery grab’ courtesy of New World Warkworth, a comprehensive optical package, a day sailing adventure for four, a tanker of water and a helicopter ride, as well as numerous works of art, dinners and wine from top vineyards and restaurants in the Matakana region. The dinner starts at 6pm and ticket prices are $50 per person – maximum 120 people. Info: phone Meralee on 423 0033.

Around 400 young rugby players from around the district took part in a tournament at Silverdale United Rugby Club last month, in a mini build-up to the Rugby World Cup. Ten-a-side teams from 15 schools from Kaipara Flats to Dairy Flat took part in the event on May 19, with Years 3–4 children playing the Rippa version of the game and the Years 5–6 pupils choosing whether to play tackle or Rippa. This was the first North —Jun201 Harbour Rugby Primary Schools Tournament for the year, with the second and final one to be held on June 30. The two top Year 5 and 6 Rippa teams will go forward to a semi-final on August 4 at North Harbour and the winner will be one of two teams representing North Harbour in the Rippa World Cup finals – a mini world cup consisting of 20 teams from around the country to be held on August 8–9. The tackle teams were competing to represent North Harbour at the curtain raiser for the North Harbour vs Auckland game at North Harbour Stadium on August 7. Both the Whangaparaoa and Warkworth teams went through unbeaten, so competition is heating up and organisers say it is definitely too close to call at this stage.
